Yum! Went in on the 4th of July for some BBQ, and had a very filling, tasty meal. The staff was friendly and funny, and we chose to enjoy the perfect weather on the patio. Started with the fried pickles - they ROCK. I had the Lil Miss Piggy (pulled pork sandwich) on a brioche bun which was really good, side of macaroni and cheese which was DELICIOUS, and shoestring fries. The fries were pretty good but they did need a little salt. My husband got the pork ribs, beans (tasty), cornbread (a little dry TBH), and fries with macaroni and cheese also. Haha. We uh...we went big. A really solid BBQ meal. I would return!

I went to this restaurant this afternoon, a Sunday in August ("slow season" for a resort town), with my family. My husband loves BBQ, so this was (supposed to be) a treat for him. The restaurant had a handful of tables seated, and enough staff on to handle the business easily. We stood at the door waiting to be sat for nearly 5 minutes before someone even greeted us. A waiter called out to us from across the restaurant to come sit in the booth that he was standing by, while blocking our access into the booth. We sat, ordered drinks and the kids chicken strips. We later ordered ourselves a ribs and brisket plate with baked beans and fries. The kids foods came out, and ours a few minutes later. Our drinks had emptied by the time the food arrived, but there was no offer to refill them, and subsequently no follow up on how our food was. The ribs were mushy and had no smoke flavor or ring to distinguish that they had been smoked, and the brisket was sadly bland. It was very apparent that the ribs had been sitting in a hot box all day, as they clearly had not come out of a smoker. The beans were flavorless, even with pork belly added in. The fries were soggy and not hot. And through all of this, or server still never stopped back to check on us. The server finally came back with a check, and proceeded to stop by the table 4 more times before we left, didn't bother to clear a single plate, refill a single drink, or ask how our meal was. Overall, the food was poor quality BBQ, and the service was horrible. Don't waste your time.

Service is awful. I waited about 10 minutes after sitting down for someone to take my drink order. I had to ask someone to take my food order and to get my soda refilled. On the plus side the food is pretty good.

I've learned a BBQ rule through the years...if you can't smell it in the parking lot, don't expect much. Fried cheese curds were yummy, but it's not tough to impress with fried cheese. Pork belly tacos were okay, I was hoping for more pork and smoke flavor but the brussels sprout slaw dominated. Hubby and I split the pork ribs. Pretty fatty and no char, they were not smoked. In fact, I wouldn't have been surprised if they were buyout. Very average. Parmesean show string fries- limp and undercooked. Fried okra was okay, the okra was not quite done but the batter was quite done. Our server was about to have a conniption over something that happened earlier, he was trying to keep it together and the effort was palpable. Cornbread was the best thing next to the curds. If I had to do it again, I'd just get curds and beer and dine elsewhere. They have a nice deck, but it overlooks the parking lot.

Great food great service. Aug 2015. We were a little hesitant due to another review but really wanted some BBQ. Man, we were not disappointed. Food was really good. Wait staff great, fun and friendly. Prices reasonable. Signed: content!

Kids grilled cheese not even melted, service slow as molasses - I WOULD NOT recommend this place ever.

Loved it! Jamaican music in the background and a beautiful day with the family. The blackened salmon brisket combo was outstanding. Grate friendly service and reasonable prices for a mountain town.

I am very lazy yelper and I apologize. This is only my second review unfortunately, I rely on all you kind people to show me the way. But when I review it is for a reason...... So, arrived at Montanas. Took a few minutes for the hostess to greet us.. No big deal... Sat at the bar while we were waiting on a table.. Took another few minutes.. No worries... Got seated at our table... Waited 5 minutes for a server... 5 minutes became 15... 15 became 30... Never even got menus.. And so we left. 1 star for the silverware being lined up perfectly. In terms of the food got takeout here a year ago. Dry barbecue. Sauces barely helped. If you're looking for some good food head to No Se Hagan Bolas for some tacos or Gondola Pizza for some good service and food..

We were told to seat ourselves as we came in for dinner. We were given water quickly and had our order taken in 5 minutes. There was also nice live music. There was exceptional service throughout the evening. We ordered several things. The arugula salad had a unique and very good dressing. The brussell sprouts were a little too peppery and the turkey sandwich wasn't the best because it was a little dry. But, the brisket was top notch and the bbq chicken was very good. Overall a great BBQ experience. Would come again for brisket.

Good fast service our food was hot and well presented by excellent server. I had the grill chicken & loved the jalapeño corn bread & live music on the patio to enjoy a late summer evening. Well done !

Fall off the bone ribs. Great slaw and potato salad. Came here completely by accident. Late lunch. Too many honking BMWs in this town...but none in the parking lot.

  • Pam K.

I was very pleased by the excellent food, good prices, and superb service.we had the arugula salad, the brisket and the chicken that was a smoked to perfection. The only thing I would not order again would be the smoked turkey which was a little dry. We were served immediately and everybody was helpful even though the restaurant was full. Good job!

Great place with delicious food. The staff is super friendly. I love the Colorado chopped salad. You can also easily split a plate of meat with sides. Best local place in Avon!

Great food, great service! The day prior we went next door at Loaded Joe's and had arguably the worst breakfast experience everrrrr. So today we tried Montana's, and maybe our expectations are set low now after the Loaded Joe's experience, but whatever...this place rocks! Great food, great ambience, great service....thanks for restoring my faith in humanity Montana's! :) I recommend the Tough Mudder, scrambler, and french toast.

Went on a Tuesday night, after dinner rush and got right in. Waiter was prompt and friendly. Loved my blackened catfish! It was cooked perfectly. Coleslaw side was kinda plain..but cornbread was yummy...Mac n cheese was really good! Hubby loved his burger and Parmesan fries were excellent. Didn't have any typical BBQ fare so we can't comment on that.

I come here almost all the time during my breaks and it's a great place to spend time and quench your thirst for beer (awesome draft selection!) and grab a little grub!

Serving staff was very friendly. Wonderful to sit outdoors on a beautiful fall day. Food: mediocre, at best. Blackened chx san was flavorless and Brussels sprouts crazy over salted.

  • Colleen M.

I had the blackened chicken sandwich and it was awesome. We all loved the meal and their signature cocktails. A bit overpriced, but it's gotta be cheaper than up the hill in Beaver Creek. We also loved the grilled Avocado, pulled pork sandwich, and mac and cheese.

I've been to many barbeque joints and do a bit of grilling myself. Because of this I was looking forward to trying this place out. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed after finding that my ribs were a bit over cooked and the brisket was dry. The baked beans were a joke since they were basically canned beans with a little onion thrown in... I also couldn't find a sauce that I liked since the only choices were mustard, vinegar or fruit jelly? based... Service was also so so, took a while to get our drinks and the waitress missed a key part of our order. Overall its passable, but not even close to what I'd expect from a good BBQ joint.

If you read my other reviews, you know I'm not a big eater but that I also like BBQ. However, after a long day of skiing I do build up a massive appetite! It was funny because we both ordered the smoked brisket n meat combo and the waitress told us it was probably way too much food. I could tell you that despite the two side orders and a beer, we polished it all off! And I will tell you that everything was absolutely excellent! There is no question that I would come back here again after a long day of skiing! Did I mention great people work here! ;)

Tried it again with some friends because they love the place. Go to Moe's Original or Kirby Cosmos. They dominate this excuse for BBQ

  • DB F.

My ribs were nothing like the pictures. They were pale and didnt have any rub on them. When i asked the waiter Eric - he looked at me like if i take ur ribs out back there getting spit or worse on them. Been to many places and they usually do the right thing. Montana's Smokehouse is not deserving of it's name.

Excellent place! The service was great and the food awesome. Best smoked ribs I've ever had! Totally recommend this place.

Nothing special on the BBQ side. Food was dry and served almost instantly; seemed like it was just sitting under a heat lamp.

Food was ok during the day but it's VERY ghetto at night on the weekends. Place is a joke for evening entertainment.

Great bbq , large portions of meat, and reasonable prices. You wont go wrong stopping here for dinner. We had the pulled pork and beef brisket combo excellent. Potato salad side was not great, but cole slaw and parm fries were outstanding . Friendly servers.

  • Daniel C.

Really slow and inattentive service. The food was decent but we started making bets on how long it would take to get things that should've taken 30 seconds. We had a great time laughing about how the bill took 20 minutes to come. We also didn't have menus for the first 15 minutes after sitting down.

I eat so as not to starve, this food made me a food enthusiast! The grilled avocado, grilled Cesar salad, and mac and cheese were amazing!! And there were many other things I wanted to try...

The food keeps getting better and better! The turkey is absolutely delicious! and the mac & cheese & brussel sprouts as sides are very yummy! I've dined here with my boyfriend and brought friends from out of town, and everyone has found the perfect dish for them, and absolutely loved it! (grilled chicken sandwich, pulled pork, burger, turkey & all the sides) So yummy!

Great good, even better service. New favorite! After getting poor service at the pizza place next store, we left and tried Montana's. The service was quick, polite and the food was incredible. Highly recommended.

Came on a Monday. Quickly seated by a nice fireplace. Got our drinks fast and our order taken and food in front of us in like 10 min! Good was good. Sautéed Brussel sprouts were very good!

Placed looked like it was a hit after seeing so many cars parked there the night before. But what your reading about poor service is dead on. Definitely not meeting the standards of a resort town.

I just gave a scathing review of Coyote Cafe and honestly, I can't find anything wrong with Montana's Smokehouse. My wife ordered the eggs Benedict and LOVED it. The eggs were perfect, the potatoes were fresh and hot. She has a small stomach and never finishes her meals; she left nothing on her plate. I had the huevos rancheros and friggin' loved them. The fried tortillas under the eggs were a nice surprise. The tortilla side was huge and warm. The staff was cordial, the coffee flavorful. For breakfast, this place won't disappoint.

Unsure about Montana's. The food is a bit hit and miss, and on a second visit I realized the menu was a bit limited. I actually respect that, but it needs to go hand in hand with excellent food. As others have said the ribs could use a bit more flavour. The beef brisket is fantastic, but you can't seem to order it as a main, only as an accompaniment. Tacos needed less meat, more flavour and more veges. Service is great, obviously keen to please. Atmosphere is unique. Seems to attract a random mix of clientele. I give it both 5 stars and 1 for this. Highly recommend sticking around for a drink on a Saturday. Entertaining for all the wrong reasons...

Went here for lunch on our way back from Moab. The beef brisket was so tender and delicious. The tangy sauce they have had just the right balance of spice and sweet. Hubby got the pulled pork sandwich and that was good too. Cole slaw was meh, ok. Fries were good. I'd go back there again and maybe try the brisket salad.

Well the beer was cold but this place is Really, Really Bad. Will never go back. I took my parents in for early lunch at 11:45 am on Friday Aug 23. There was one other table occupied. Service was excellent. The waiter was all over us (as he should be with nobody there). He suggested several sandwiches on the menu but didn't know much about the beer on tap. The bar tenderess came over and talked to me about the beers and offered samples. I decided on Blue Paddle. They had 3 kinds of sauces on the table and they were all excellent. Sweet Habanero, a mustard base (my fav) and regular vinegar based. They appeared to have it going on the surface. My dad and I both ordered the ribs and sausage, my mom half a chicken. Well they came back and said they were sold out of ribs... ??? WTF? You mean the bozo owner didn't cook ribs at 8am like he should and since he just rolled in at 10am they weren't done yet? Yes. He came out later and said they wouldn't be ready until 2pm. ??? So my dad switched to brisket and sausage and I wanted to try the "Blue Corn Fried Catfish" just cuz it sounded weird. We laughed later that it wouldn't go well with sausage but I will never know. Well after 30 mins and 2 beers later my dad was ready to leave. Certainly they weren't cooking the BBQ? Don't you just take it out of the warmer and cut it? Well I made excuses that maybe my fried catfish and fried okra were slowing it down. Good try except they didn't fry the catfish (if was broiled) and brought beans instead of my fried okra. The sausage was really really dry cuz it was cut into 2 inch pieces and then split down the middle before being warmed in an oven. ??? Tasted like i was eating a scab. Can't speak for the chicken, looked OK.

Pretty disappointed. The menu sounded quite appetizing. However, when it came down to it, the food quality was less than average. Was excited to get some good BBQ, but left less than impressed. Our entire party felt this way. I liked that it was in the town we were staying, but that's about it. Would not recommend to anyone to try this. If you're going to go out for dinner up in the mountains, this is not the place to hit up. Just a fair warning that you'll leave feeling so-so about your meal at best. Sigh.

I wanted to be fair to this restaurant, b/c all too often we must suffer the reactive 1-star rating from the rater who obviously got his nose out of joint and therefore lacks any objectivity at all. I thought maybe a 3 would capture it, but "A-OK" just doesn't accurately reflect the experience. Let me begin with service, which is the restaurant's blatantly obvious flaw, and is most reflected in my rating. Put simply, they are incompetent. Friendly, but incompetent. We ordered drinks and it took at least 20 minutes for them to arrive, and at that, only two arrived (for a party of four). The third drink arrived a few minutes later, and my drink arrived a full 7 minutes later (yes, by this time I was counting). The drinks were watered down versions of the interesting concoctions on the menu. My martini was a vermouth martini, but the bartender corrected it immediately, so kudos to him. You noticed I said bartender, not waiter? That's b/c our waiter was AWOL much of the evening so I took matters into my own hands. It was odd b/c our waiter was eager to please, but just couldn't pull it off. I'm sure he will be baffled by the tip we left. The runners performance got to be comical. When a tray of someone else's drinks arrived at our table, we joked that we would take it b/c only half of ours had arrived at that time. Then meal after meal was going to the wrong table all over our section. It really was funny, and would have been hilarious had we not been so hungry having flown in today and were therefore on the later east coast time we had left. And like our drinks, two meals came together, and the other two were staggered, mine again being the last (Hmm, did I offend the chap?). The better part of the experience was the food. The pulled pork and chicken dishes seemed to be a better bet, and they really were quite good. The brussel sprouts are worth the upgrade for sides. The herb roasted chicken had good flavor, but was dried out, so I would worry about the salmon suffering a similar fate. The ribs were underwhelming and not that great. Now keep in mind, this is a BBQ joint, so if you're going expecting the Ritz, then stop your grousing and go there (pun potential if only a popular mountain restaurant by similar name were housed there). BTW, the only 5s I would give for BBQ would be one of those North Carolina joints by the side of the road where you stop for lunch on the way to the Outer Banks. I know, I'm hard nosed and regionally biased in that way, but favor the NC rubs over Texas sauce drenched BBQ (a preference, not a criticism). All in all, Montana's might be good for a lunch and a pulled meat sandwich if they ever get their service fleet in order. I noticed one reviewer was reluctant to send food back or complain for fear of having something unseemly done to his food - I know exactly what he/she means. There was that vibe, a grit that I normally love so long as everything else is going well. In fact, I prefer that over the Vail pretentiousness that some of these "fine dining" establishments here on the mountain exude. And who's to say your food couldn't get spit on in Vail? Just sayin.'

I liked Montana's when it was a Mexican joint and equally like it now as a smokehouse. Quick service and a wonderful deck to sit on. This place is great for a beer or a meal. Last time here I had a chicken sandwich. Topped with the usual lettuce, tomato, onion etc, perfectly moist grilled chicken. The parmesan fries were so good, the best actually. Friendly service, good price will definitely be back.

I stopped in here for some takeout before a gig. Got immediate, friendly service at the bar, put in my food order and also got a beer (thinking it was going to be a bit). I had taken maybe 5 sips of my beer and - BAM - food was out, ready to go. Really impressive! Had the pulled pork and some ribs, both of which were delicious! I also noticed that the patio seemed really popular with the younger locals. Lots of open space to mingle and drink, as well as a beer pong setup. Would have loved to have stayed and had some fun!

FINALLY a BBQ Joint in Avon! If you are looking for a well rounded menu (w/ great kid & non-meat options) & AWESOME food, don't miss Montana's! The current staff is overly attentive, the atmosphere is great & there is plenty of easy parking. It is a perfect choice for a quick bite (open for breakfast, lunch & dinner), to have a family meal (can accommodate small parties to extremely large groups) or just chill w/ a cocktail from the extensive bar. Other than the food, my favorite thing about this place is the deck! A huge space w/ a fire pit & big views (+heat lamps for the chilly ;)). I love eating or just hanging outside. Oh- And dog friendly!! At night the tables push back, the lights go down & this place turns into 1 of Avon's top hotspots! By far 1 of my 2 favorite places to dance in the valley b/c of the actual floor. There is always a good vibe in there w/ a mix of locals & visitors. Offering both live music & the BEST local DJs I recommend this place to anyone interested in a good time and incredible food! *I believe Montana's has gone under new management since above review was written. In the past I would agree w/ what they said, but was pleasantly surprised w/ my more recent experience & have returned several times since! Yeah!!!

We were very hopeful about Montana's, since nearly all of the other reviews were raves. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the service was of acceptable quality. We we walk-ins on the Saturday night before Christmas, which should have been the busiest night of the year, but the place was nearly deserted. Several TVs were blaring and loud Muzak was playing, but nobody was listening. We asked to be seated a what appeared to be a quieter table, away from the TVs. Our table was assigned to a waitress whose principal station was on the diametrically opposite side of the restaurant. We barely saw her throughout the evening, even after having asked for the check. The food started out as promising. We ordered wedge salads as appetizers, and they were interestingly presented with real strips of bacon (instead of more conventional crumbles). The dressing was commercially mass-produced bottled stuff. Our main courses were not exciting. I had the signature dish, a rack of ribs, which was dry and uninterestingly seasoned. The three "house" sauces on the table were likewise watered-down impressions of what BBQ sauces might taste like. The smoked mac and cheese -- another "signature" side sold with a $2 upcharge -- was watery and not very cheesy. On balance, Montana's was a disappointment. In a restaurant that is so clearly set up to make most of its money on the bar business, it's hard to understand how the bar could be so empty and the staff so inattentive. We won't be going back.

I loved this place! Service was excellent- friendly and informative. Recommended different types of beer -- We had Belgium and Blue Moon $2/piece (happy hour)! We ordered the blue cornmeal catfish with breaded okra which was scrumptuous for the non-meat eating other half; and I had the pulled pork and beans and tried all three bar-b-que flavors -- our favorite was the barbeque sauce made of habenera peppers and blackberries.Comfortable seating with oversized pillows. For $25 you can't go wrong : ) Perfect after a great hike!

Yes, the ribs were finger lickin good. Service was well intentioned but I don't think our waiter is usually a waiter- I think he was pinch hitting during a holiday week. Our appetizer salad was forgotten (at least he remembered to comp us for it) and our included sides were all screwed up. But having said that, the food was really good and we waddled out full and happy.

Me and my husband decided to eat here one night during our honeymoon vacation. Which was a bad choice. The bbq was horrible and the sauce choices were subpar at best. We both have very strong stomachs, but I guess not strong enough considering we both got sick the next day. Which they blamed on the fact that we had a bottle of wine. I drink a lot of wine and have never been that sick. This was not just a hangover. The service was slow even though the place was dead. (which was blamed on the off season even though they ranted about the place being packed the next night.) The hostess was very nice and towards the end of our meal the server started to be nice. I left a review on Facebook and was shocked by the reaction of the restaurant. They got very defensive blaming us for coming in at 9:30, then went on and on about how they didn't appreciate me publicly bashing their restaurant. If you don't want reviews then don't have the option available. When I pointed out that the yelp reviews aren't great either they responded by saying "Yelp is for jerks who enjoy complaining. I will just add you to that list." Also stating that they would have offered to comp our meal, but because I was rude (aka honest) they changed their mind. I am not looking for a free meal. I just wanted people to know that if they are looking for a place to eat, somewhere else would be a better option. According to yelp and Facebook the kitchen closes at 10 and they close at 2am, but apparently the kitchen actually closes at 9:30. If I could give no stars, I would. This place is not worth the money or time. Reviews should be an opportunity to correct flaws in a business not an excuse to harass your customers that didn't have the best experience. I will be back to Avon, but I will never go back to this restaurant.

Just went there this evening and the food was so good. We shared the brisket and pulled pork platter and chose the mac n' cheese and coleslaw (only $13). Everything was SO good! The server was a little slow but the food made up for it and the price is so reasonable. It's a bit hot in there as it faces south with lots of windows and no AC. Next time I'd go when the sun goes down; and I'll definitely go again!

This place is great. The food is spot on and so is the staff. They have great Barbeque , and a great range of Barbeque sauces. They also having live music, Dj s , theater. It's an asset to Avon for sure.

Wow, such a great smokehouse and wonderful addition to the Avon area because there isn't much like it, first I will start off by saying that not only is the food to die for but the deck is HUGE and they have great afternoon parties in the summer. The wings are so good they'll make you wanna slap your mama and there are even some healthy choices too. If you are looking for some fun and great food Montana's Smokehouse is a great start!

Horrible place, don't even think about going here. Very confused staff running back and forth aimlessly, took forever to get drinks, then people seated after us getting their food first. 30 minutes after we placed our order, and after getting zero attention for that long, we got up and left. Won't be surprised when this place closes or ends up on a restaurant rescue tv show.

Montana's Smokehouse is awesome. My friend and I got Ribs, Chicken and Pork for our main dishes. They were all awesome (I do not know which was best). There are three different BBQ sauces, varying in temperature and flavor, so everyone can pick one (or all three!) that they like. We got mac and cheese, fries and cole slaw as sides - all were amazing. The appetizers were great too. The deserts looked good too - my friend got one, but I was too full. Go check out the newest smokehouse in the valley for dinner, lunch, breakfast, drinks, FAC and all of the cool events they host.

Meh. Service was subpar. I had the roasted half chicken which was actually okay. My friend ordered the veggie burger and the meat patty was dinky. My water wasn't refilled once. I wouldn't come back here or recommend this place.

We had lunch here and I ordered the brisket salad, my husband had a combo platter of sausage and brisket we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The deck is a great hang out for sunny days and service was excellent. We will definitely be back.

Went for Prime Rib Special. A meat and potato lovers dream. Awesome beef and sides. Loved the barbecue sauces. Great craft beer selection as well. I will be coming back to try the BBQ. Wait staff is great. We knew the Chef from previous stint and he is great.

Awesome lunch. New menu, new chef Eric, same great location. Had ribs, burgers & blackened salmon. All were over the top. Warning: The mac & cheese is to die for, a must try,

So I am going to jump on the bandwagon and give this place 5 stars. The brisket and the pulled pork both had a great smoked flavor while still being tender and moist. It would be hard for me to say which was better as they were both excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive. Prices and portion size were quite reasonable especially taken in the context of a mountain resort town. In a week spent in the area, dining out at some pretty mediocre places, this restaurant was a pleasant standout.
