yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum! Came across this place asking where another brunch spot was and was pointed here instead! Love it. Amazing food- had the meatballs and the new turkey with egg on top thingy and amazing wine. Only thing I would suggest is if the servers were a bit more attentive to the shared communal table you would of had 5 stars. We sat there for prob 15 minutes and I had to finally get up and ask if we could get water. Loved the music, decor and food was just awesome! Would def go again.

Came here for lunch the other day and sat at the communal table. A friend and I shared the mushroom, goat cheese pizza drizzled with truffle oil and the organic spinach salad. I also got their homemade arnold palmer. IT was very refreshing on a hot summer day. The pizza crust was thin and crispy and the pizza itself packed a punch. the salad was fantastic with crispy spinach and an orange citrus vinegarette with toasted pine nuts, grape tomatoes and feta cheese. Still a cool hip place, but Primitivo is still better.

Great food...consistently appalling service. We love the food at Gjelina, but the crappy service always makes us think twice about going. Without fail, there's an issue getting getting our food - items delivered to the wrong table or that just don't show up. If it just happened once, you'd write it off, but it happens EVERY TIME! We've tried going early, when it's not busy. Still, items just never arrive or, worse, are delivered to the table after we've paid the bill (duh, we're done). Really, is that hard to deliver bacon or toast with breakfast? Really? Sad.

I am a sucker for good creative food & Gjelina does it good! I would be giving this place 5 stars but there is a Hollywood-ish vibe to this place mainly because of the hostess's attitude! I would definitely go there more often if the hostess was more friendly and it wasn't so damn packed all the time! Still, by far my most favorite food in Venice!

  • Erica A.

So effing good. Ate there two days in a row last summer and just about died both times. Every flavour is so well balanced, complimenting one another, making you want to eat more. The pizza is delicious as well as the cheese board. Loud place, though.

  • D S.

yum. yum. yum. I was really afraid that Gjelina's would be another pricey restaurant that didn't live up to it's hype. That fear was extinguished with the first bite I took there. The food is bloody delicious and simply well done. To add to the pleasurable experience of the food, the atmosphere is chill and the service is spot on. Definitely plan ahead with reservations. But once you have them, just relax. They seat you promptly. I can't wait to go again. Such a treat of a meal. And you can't beat the location.

We came here for breakfast and it was okay so we decried to come here for dinner. The service is amazing and the drink selection is fabulous. We got oysters and champagne to start but our main course was very hard to get because they don't do modifications!!!!!!! So basically any dish with cheese on it, we couldn't eat and we simply wanted to put the cheese on the side and yet it was a no. We came at the end of the night so they also ran out of all the good desserts. Overall it was very nice, just a little loud and the no modification was a killer.

  • Rachel W.

All they hype around this place is legit. Came in for a late breakfast during the middle of the week & it was empty (which meant the food came out even quicker - yessssss). I ordered the ricotta blueberry pancakes which were to die for & probably could have eaten a 2nd order. The other people I were with loved their food as well. The coffee was strong - which is a very good thing (to me). I look forward to coming back again & again & again to stuff my face with delicious food.

Fresh and delicious! Two different people told me to go here. Peaches with burrata was incredible and just everything was fresh and delicious. I'll be back!

After having to make a reservation three weeks in advance, I had very high expectations for this place. The place was packed and very loud. The menu has a lot of options, but I do not eat red meat and the friend I came with is allergic to shellfish so that limited our options. We ordered a bunch of small plates along with the grilled chicken. The food tasted ok, but several of the dishes were downing in sauce. I had pretty high expectations after all the hype, but wasn't that impressed. Maybe we there are better things on the menu, but I thought the food we ordered wasn't anything special.

  • K T.

Food looks better than it tasted. Service was slow. Wasn't worth the wait.

  • Jesse P.

Hard to get a table usually, but tonight walked in at 1010pm or so and got one right away. There were two of us, had the... -avocado and tomato salad. Fresh, delicious. -grilled squid, juicy and tender -pork belly small plate. Though I prefer when the top is really crispy, one of the more succulent versions I've had. Pork belly is my thing, so I'm extremely critical. Have been here for lunch and brunch before too and highly recommend. Will def go back soon!

Instagram heaven. Every corner you turn has something worth capturing. Whether it be the beautiful wall details, mixtures of different tabletops, or the gorgeous food, Gjelina is a great hangout spot for anyone. Reservations, however, can be hard to get so beware.

  • Gena D.

love the food but it's become so popular like the rest of Abbot Kinney that I've never waited less than15 minutes for my table even with a reservation. Staff is great but it's loud and packed. Go on off hours.

    (4)
  • Mark B.

To echo Stevie Nicks, STAND BACK. You will either wait an hour for a table or be blown away by the lamb sausage pizza. My guess is it depends on your attitude. We arrived for mom's birthday, snapped pics with Ted Danson and devoured the menu. Even Abbot Kinney would have proud.

Very hip an awesome atmosphere. Wish they had more gluten-free options, But overall I had a enjoyable time.

My wife was out of town, so I went and she was.......not happy. I got there early on a Saturday, I grabbed a spot at the communal table. I ordered the Burratta w/ heirloom tomatoes one of the best I've ever tasted. My entree was the Duck Confit over Brussels Sprouts incredible, on the recommendation from the waiter. I also ordered a bottle of a " I believe" Hazelwood Pinot Noir" very good. Service at the beginning was good , then nonexistent. He never came by to ask if his suggestion of the Duck was the right one. Even though it was. I am looking forward on going back and so is Barb. Enjoy.

This place is awesome. There is a reason you are reading so many good reviews. The food is excellent! Pizzas are good, but everything else we had was even better. They even made a simple vegetable taste amazing. People whining about the parking are silly. What place in LA besides Dodger Stadium has ample parking? You cannot go wrong here!

    I love the oxtail ragu.

  • Nicole L.

Great food. Fun atmosphere. Terrible service. Our waitress was incredibly rude. Seemed irritated that we wanted to order rounds of food (this is a tapas place and we ended up spending $500 so you'd think she'd be stoked for her tip). Also argued with us when the wrong pizza was brought to our table. Actually tried to convince us that a cheese-less tomato paste + sausage pizza was a burrata + jalapeño pizza. Service like this totally turned me off and I won't be back. I can find this style of food at many other places in LA without the attitude.

    (3)
  • Cary L.

Excellent, great service. Their vegies come from Santa Monica farmers market. Great pizzas & salads. I eat there at least once a week.

  • BagelDog W.

went on Halloween... sat outside.... it was great. The menu is a little overwhelming since there is so much on it. Great food though. The atmosphere outside was perfect. The prices were good too. Worried though that the prices will go up like some of the items at Primotivo? Good addition to Abbott Kinney.

    (5)
  • Jenny B.

food was good. seemed a bit pricey. thin crust carmelized onion and arugula pizza two salads were good: caprese and spinach

    (3)
  • Jonathan N.

It's good food but expect to pay the premium prices for an establishment on Abbott Kinney. As much as they are charging, is it too much to ask for proper seating or at least non-ghetto seating on that area just outside of it? It felt like you're roughing it like camping out there. I mean are the profit margins that razor-thin you can't afford plastic chairs?

  • Sharon H.

We came here for brunch on a Saturday. The Vegetarian Sandwich was absolutely solid. I was a vegetarian for about a decade and this was maybe the second best veggie sandwich I've had. It was stuffed with some of my favorite sandwhich ingredients, ie avocado and sprouts, and also had unique ingredients such as sliced radish and fennel. The Grilled Peach Burrata Salad with proscuitto was also delicious; all the ingredients tasted very fresh. We weren't able to make a reservation on OpenTable, it said there were none available in a 2.5 hour window we wanted, but were able to walk-in at 11am and there were multiple open seats. Atmosphere is very cute with rustic furniture.

    (4)
  • Jennifer C.

The cheese platter is great to pair with their wines. Also tried one of the pizzas but I really want to go back and try some of the other great sounding entrees. Make a reservation or suffer through communal dining. Although I can't really complain... I'll take the long shared tables for the food here any day. Side note: the paparazzi hanging around the front door is annoying.

    (4)
  • Jane D.

My favorite spot for a casual-chic dinner. The plates are small, but hearty, so you'll be satisfied. Pizza is good and the wine list is spectacular. This place is PERFECT for a sexy date night. Tough to get reservations - you usually have to call far, far in advance - but I recommend you doing that so you don't have to wait an hour or be forced to get Gjelina take-out next door.

    (5)
  • Ru C.

it was unfortunate that we didnt get to try the mushroom toast which is only available for dinner, but we got to try the wood roasted cauliflower, one of their pizza (forgot the name but it was recommend by our friendly waiter!), cow and goat cheese toast with mixed berry jam on top (forgot the exact name but it was HEAVENLY), and finished the course off with butterscotch pot de creme. the dessert was sweet but not too sweet, and very creamy. overall i absolutely enjoyed my experience there, the food was excellent! fresh and very flavorful. i don't know how such a simple dish like cauliflower can be so good!!

    (5)
  • M T.

I have been coming here since it opened. When it's not packed, or when they are not slammed the staff is accommodating and polite. Delicious. PLEASE GET REAL NAPKINS!!!! it's like a cotton ball exploded on my lap. This happens every time. I know you guys can afford it. CONS: the clientele. Too many trendy people who look too cool to be there... for Sunday breakfast/brunch go off hours or before 11am to avoid "douche-bag" hour.

  • Ant M.

I eat out at least 4 times a week and I'm open to checking out new restaurants. So yesterday friends took me to Gjelina Venice, CA - the first thing I notice was the great interior design. Then it went down hill.... Why was it necessary that our waitress needed to be to cool for words. A simple and sincere may I help you would have been plenty... Ok our waitress is an inspiring actor / model and this job is below her. If you want a cool restaurant vibe - Gjelina gives good atmosphere...

    (2)
  • Ibrahim A.

Only reason this place is getting 4 starts instead of 5 is because it is a pain to get into. Otherwise, it's masterful.

    (4)
  • Chris C.

Very cool place for sure, trendy and quite hip. Food was out of this world, unique and super fresh ingredients. For was great and would go back next time I'm in town for sure.

  • Alicia G.

One of my favorite places to dine in LA. Definitely a MUST. Worst thing I can say is that it's dark, loud and always has a line to get in. Amazing energy.. Reminds me of a lot of New York restaurants. Love, Love, Love it!

    (5)
  • Colin L.

Had a great lunch here, beautiful restaurant with great food and service. We had wood roasted cauliflower, a mushroom and fontina pizza and beef heart with chimichurri, all of which were excellent on their lovely shaded patio.

    (4)
  • Tina T.

You cannot go wrong with Gjelina! Make a reservation ahead of time get the mushroom toast and end with a butterscotch pot de creme! The recipe for the mushroom toast has changed and my only request is for it to go back to the original with hen of the woods mushroom and truffle oil. Overall Gjelina really does have it all! Great food, ambiance, and staff.

    (4)
  • Laura S.

Sooooo difficult to get a table, but really great food. Ok cocktail and wine selection. Great service. Nice ambiance (try to get a table in the back outdoor area).

  • Jeranel J.

people in LA do tend to hire servers who are young and attractive thinking that it will bring in customers, it doesn't. We go for the awesome food, not the 'legends in their own mind-don't you know who I think I am' staff. People really do prefer good service from a pro, not snotty attitude from a wannabe. And they get way worse and more full of themselves when the restaurant becomes a haven for celebrities, the "normal" customers become less important. They have just become the pesky gnats buzzing around that the REAL people of LA have learned to ignore and kinda feel sorry for. That being said, the food at Gjelina is wonderful. I usually just hit the Gjelina to go menu anyway because all I ever want are those fabulous salads. I get three or four at a time. I have been able to slide in for a table for lunch and early dinner. I love new American restaurants I think it is the best cuisine in the world. Gjelina reminds of one of the many wonderful places in Portland and Seattle whose menus are creative fresh and local. This is what drew me in the door. Farm fresh quality with an innovative flare. Just ignore the ridiculous servers when they act like little divas, dont tip 'em. Easy...... And remind them that they will NEVER be on Beyonce's speed dial.

  • Christine M.

Love this place! Its my favorite breakfast/brunch spot. The fried egg sandwich with bacon, so yummy. The ricotta pancakes are delish. margarita pizza comes with a side of dried oregano that makes the whole pizza come to life. They have seasonal fresh baked scones are that great starters! Decor is totally hip and very chill. Servers match the vibe, chill, well dressed and cool. Worth driving from the Sbay to Venice for.

  • Jamie L.

Do not go to this restaurant! Extremely rude staff with a major attitude. One time at Gjelina was more than enough for us and I would never go back.

    (1)
  • Iris T.

Was really really disappointed. The waitress had this attitude that when we remind her about our missing duck confit, she straight up told us that we didn't order it instead of apologizing. When I asked for a straw for my drink, the straw came but uncleaned. It was sticky. We also asked our waitress for her opinion on wether to get the pizza or mushroom toast but she didn't offer any constructive advice but told us to order on our appetite. Food was ok but nothing super great about it. Overall I left unsatisfied

    (2)
  • David N.

Delicious pizza but lose the 'tude. Hostaria del Piccolo and Stella Barra also have great pizza and without the pomposity.

    (3)
  • Paul T.

Don't ask them to remove something because of an allergy... they will proudly say with a smile "order something else." We walked out... Wtf is wrong in LA?

This is by far one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, period. Service was good but food was amazing! I can't wait to go back and try other things on their menu. Seriously can't go wrong with anything you order...

    (5)
  • Quinton M.

Great selection of pizzas, salads, small plates and surprisingly good oysters! The vibe is really chill and the staff were welcoming. The pomodoro pizza with burrata was outstanding, as was the beer list.

    (5)
  • Cee L.

Worst service I've ever seen in a restaurant. Staff all has attitude. I worked in restaurants for 6+ years while in college and grad school - I've been in their spot before. No need to act like you can't be bothered with your guests. It's bad enough that I refuse to ever go back. Food is good, but not good enough to deal with the staff.

    (2)
  • Yoko C.

I want to stay conservative for rating as we only explored a little bit of their menu, 3.5 stars (5/13/2015). Yellowtail crudo and collar pork were not very impressive, but oysters were prepared right, giant mushrooms, broccoli were great, beef hearts were a little dry but unique. Overall, we enjoyed dining at this place.

    (4)
  • Esther H.

The food here is stellar. The mushroom on toast dish and the butterscotch dessert are must orders. My only complaints are the noise volumes indoors and the uneven heating outdoors.

    (4)
  • Anthony F.

Food was ok. Waiter told us it was family style and one dish would feed several of us. So not true. We made our initial chices then re-ordered three times. Got so expensive we gave up and all left hungry. The sea bass was very good. The pizzas were just ok. All of the smoked trout dishes were good but could of used more trout. No bad deserts.

    (3)
  • tiffany t.

Smoked trout salad was one of the best salads I've had in my life. Atmosphere is rustic and modern. Unexpected treat.

    (5)
  • Lia H.

I dined here last month and it's still on my mind. Every single thing was delicious and the service was impeccable. Highlights of the meal for me was the wild mushroom toast (this may be one of the best things I have ever tasted EVER, ever), butterscotch pot de creme and the whole spicy shrimps. The best part of the latter was that our waitress let us know that if we wanted, we could have the heads deep fried. Yes PLEASE. I am absolutely coming back.

    (5)
  • Jennifer N.

Gjelina was good, but I wasn't blown away. Standouts for me were the guanciale pizza, scallops, beet salad, butterscotch dessert. Bringing your own wine is your best bet, too. Corkage is $20 per bottle. Their bottles start around $40.

    (3)
  • Allie G.

The pizza is AMAZING! My fave is the pomodoro!! I don't eat animal products so I absolutely love that they have a pizza on the menu without cheese! Delicious. It's missing a star because it always takes forever to get your food here. It's very crowded. Well worth the wait though!

    (4)
  • Auriane B.

Very good food and quite a frequented place. We walked from Venice beach to enjoy a nice dinner and we were not disapointed. We had pizzas and the octopus to share. The desserts did not find the success they could have expected. One point though, it is quite noisy to have a normal talk between more than 2 people.

    (4)
  • Emma I.

I went here for brunch on a delightfully sunny but nippy Sunday. We had a lovely time. I imagine in summer it would be wonderful to sit on the patio but as it was they made it very cozy with a fire and lots of heating. They had a great, diverse brunch menu although they had run out of the fingerling potato's with truffle oil, the brussell sprouts with bacon and dates were to die for! Delicious! (however bear in mind they don't have soy milk for those lactose intolerant...very strange..)

    (4)
  • Ashley N.

I've been here a few times and I must say, the atmosphere is pretty cool but the food is mediocre. There are absolutely no alterations to the menu. I went with a few friends and one of us did not eat meat, but they wouldn't accommodate her even though the meat was just a garnish they sprinkle on top of the dish she wanted to order. I thought that was an issue. I got the veggie sandwich, the bread seemed liked it was drenched in butter and there was way too much mayo in my sandwich. Not sure why it's so hard to get a reservation here, its really nothing special.

    (3)
  • Robert P.

We got there early on Wednesday evening and got a table,,, score. Started with an El segundo brewery pale ale and it was awesome. Ordered the Burata with vegetables, meatballs, duck pate four oonion pizza, hanger steak and the gnocchi with rabbit Ragu. Vegetable dish was good, but nothing special, pizza was awesome. I am not a fan of pate, but my guest really liked it. The gnocchi was really good, and the rabbit was amazing. Hangar steak was perfectly cooked and the chimichurri sauce was right on. Service was great overall a great experience. Will be back

Awesome place - great vibe and good food. Different menu, don't be afraid to explore!

  • Mike D.

Hate to comment with only one visit under my belt but I'm not sure that I'll be back. Pizzas are very good but not good enough to make me come back. It's a very busy and noisy place. I love dandelion salads but theirs had too many conflicting tastes going on. You don't have to over engineer everything. I sent it back. The service gets a 2. Had to chase down staff several times. I even got up to get the pepper mill off the counter as I didn't want to wait for someone to come around. Best bet here is to get a pizza or sandwich at the take out next door.

    (3)
  • Michael H.

There's probably little I can add to a place with a 4-star ranking with over 730 reviews, but I loved this place so much I had to add my two cents. Three of us ate at the bar on a bustling Sunday night. We shared cheese, a few small plates of veggies (the brussel sprouts and the kale), the lamb sausage pizza, and the meatballs. All the food was amazing and fun to share. What I loved most, though, was the decor/lighting/atmosphere. Lived in yet modern, dimly lit, constant din of activity...it was all perfect. I'll be back. And I want to steal the Edison bulb light fixture.

  • Rachael L.

Have enjoyed breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner; The food is what you should come here to enjoy. Reservations are mandatory if you want to come during prime time, off hours it's much easier to grab a seat. The patio is exceptional and when we bring out of town guests it exceeds all their expectations of LA. The only reason I gave it 4/5 is the service is either amazing or subpar... if you get the wrong waitstaff you end up with some buyer's remorse.

    (4)
  • Ben T.

Pros: food. Staff was nice. Pomodoro Crudo - Cherry Tomato, Burrata, Garlic & Basil- 5 stars perfect crust, proportion of ingredients and flavors. Crispy Pompano- 4.5 stars Charred Romenesco- fresno chili, anchovy, soffrito, caper & mint- 5 stars Anchovy & Burrata Toasts, Pepperonata, Capers & Sherry- 4.5 stars Warm Date cake- 5 stars! Black Bottom banana cream pie- 4 stars Cons: Victim of success. This place is almost always packed for dinner. Be ready to wait to share a "communal" table if you don't have a reservation.

    (5)
  • Rob B.

Absolutely amazing. After a busy night for a work event this place was the perfect end of the evening. Every single dish was 1000% on point. Stand outs included the artichokes, the meatballs and the crude. Service was friendly and very efficient. Can't wait to come back.

    (5)
  • Leslie K.

It was quite a scene and oh so hipster but I was really hungry and they had several veggie items on their menu. Together we shared a lovely cheese platter, a kale salad, and one of the most amazing wild mushroom omelets I've ever had. Seriously, I'd go out of my way for this egg dish. Their "Arnold Palmer" drink was fresh, refreshing, and delicious.

    (4)
  • Aaron H.

Gjenlina's great. The food's good and the few beers on tap are always decent. Goods: Pizzas. Veggie sides. Entrees. Beer and wine list. Bads: The staff is pretty sure they're the next big thing, so don't expect much service. The "Ginger Lime Lager" is one of the most awful things I've ever tasted.

    (4)
  • Sara B.

If I had a choice I would come and eat here 5 days a week.. I love this place only problem is its super busy so make reservations ahead of time.. food and great service.. I love this place!!!!

    (5)
  • Mike P.

Why so many good rating... i mean I've had some good dishes here in the past. I went back last night and it was pretty bland and terrible. The pork meatballs were frozen grocery store meatballs. Also, all of the employees mutter and talk very softly... i couldnt hear them. This place is falling apart.

Great food, but... Snotty hostesses. Indifferent service. Stupid pricing for so many microscopic dishes. LOUD. Poor reservation wait times at dinner.

Here is the TLDR since this is review number 9000. It's excellent food. Not as expensive as I thought it would be. Really pleasant service and a great ambiance. Makes for a great meal portion of a date. You should give it a try.....with your SO.

We were told 30 min wait. It wAs an hour. Then table next to us ordered after U.S. And was served before us. They forgot to put our order in. Really underwhelmed by all aspects. That and my lamb burger was under cooked and bun was burned. Salad did not show up
