This place is amazing! We just moved to the area from AL and couldn't be happier with the food, the atmosphere or the service.

Both hubby and I had the brisket, corn bread, and fries. Portions were very generous with the brisket very tender. We were especially grateful that we could bring our dog out onto the patio. They even offered us water for her.

What a dream it was to discover amazing BBQ on a casual getaway to Tehachapi. Not only will you get delicious food here, but you really get a notion of Tehachapi's awesome personality and cultural fusion. Lots of quirky signage hanging on the walls. Neat little back patio/yard area with tables, right next to their smoke house. It's no wonder the place was bustling when my bf and I walked in on a Saturday afternoon. The food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is fun and inviting. Also, great service! Brisket - Super smoky, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Ribs - Yum! There was something unique about the rub on these ribs. Maybe a tad more sweetness that usual? I appreciated it. Also: killer smoke ring. Mac and Cheese - Yummy, creamy counter to the smokieness of the meat and the spicy bite of the beans. Texture of the noodles stood up against a rich creamy sauce. I can really appreciate a mac and cheese that ins't just mush. Definitely order this. Beans - Again, I really love when BBQ sides don't taste overcooked. The beans were nicely spiced, annd, like the mac, held their texture against the spicy broth. Fry Bread - Didn't know what to expect when I ordered this, but I really loved it. It was about 18'' in diameter, and tasted like a delicious whole-wheat funnel cake. When eaten with the butter and honey, it was really out of this world. Finish your meal with this for sure! Oftentimes BBQ joints don't have the friendliest staff and simply lean on the quality of their product. I'm mostly fine with places taking that attitude, but I truly appreciated that Red House did not give that vibe at all. I loved how friendly everyone working here was. Bottom Line: Don't miss this place if you're visiting Tehachapi.

Sorry Red House BBQ but your food sucks. We ordered the beef brisket and it was hard and dry not what we were expecting. When we told the cashier she gave us an attitude. She told her boss but the way he looked at us made us get up and leave he made it obvious that were bothering him and he hated that we said something about the nasty food. He expects his food to be the best. Well is not Mr. We walked out after we saw the way the funky guy the Owner looked at us he is hella rude he has absolutely no customer service skills whatsoever. We told our friends and family not to go there either due to the nasty food and unprofessional Customer Service. You guys are better off going to Don Juans or Village Grill even Primos the food is way better and Delicious with better customer service. Dear Owner, Why is it hard for you to accept that not everyone is happy nor likes the food at your place. You are in the customer service industry and have to understand you can't satisfy everyone. Sorry but i'm just giving my honest opinion. Im sure lots of people love your place but is obvious we didn't and had a terrible experience like I said you can't satisfy everyone out there and i'm not the only one who has had a bad experience at your place. Take care

I'll be back! Had 4 ribs and 2 sides plus an imported beer for less than $20 with tax. The ribs were fantastic, dry rub is so good there's no need for sauce! First time having fried pickles I'm in love but will only order one side next time. Can't wait to go back and try the catfish po'boy!

Truly low and slow. All hand made sides. Decent can/bottled beer selection. Had brisket and pulled pork. Liked the pork more. Didnt have ribs. Loved the slaw and beans. Great service to community. Very popular with line to door. Very good bbq.

Easily the most succulent brisket I have ever had. And a surprisingly nice selection of unique bottled beers! Friendly well lit atmosphere, and downright delicious barbecue. Perfect meal before heading out into the frozen wilderness!

This really is a phenomenal BBQ eatery. I'm from the south, our BBQ tastes are VERY picky. The food here passed with flying colors. The mac and cheese was creamy and perfectly cooked, by far my favorite side. There are complaints about the portion size of the mac n' cheese for the price, but I think it serves to be fair to this restaurant that because this side is made from scratch, literally, homemade from the bottom up; Its going to be pricey because of the price of high quality ingredients and prep time. The taste of this dish, to me, more than makes up for being a little pricier. If you want out-of-the-box priced mac n' cheese, than that's what you're going to get, be fair. I had the ribs. They literally melt in your mouth and the sauce is rich and full of flavor, an absolutely delectable treat. I balance the price of the food with the factor of how soon you become full. The food is rich and it fills your stomach fast, you really don't need to eat a lot to satisfy the ol' rumbly in the tumbly. So with those two factors, I'd say this place has very reasonably priced food. They cook everything on site and nothing is frozen and reheated, which is true and honest BBQ. The wait time is based precisely on this factor. It takes a lot of time to BBQ meat right; the BBQ of the gods lol. I see poor reviews based on wait time. If you know your BBQ, then you know the prep time and the cooking times are a lot longer, especially when the staff is not large. Better to wait longer and have it done right then rushed and have a poor meal. -Staff was awesome and friendly -The owners are very cool, and down home and, from what I've seen, been very attentive to customers. -The decor is casual, eclectic and fun to look at, so if you have to wait, its not like you'll be bored. -DEFINITELY my favorite BBQ joint, and I've been to many; I will be returning.

I have been here several times in the past few years and I always really enjoyed their pulled pork bbq sandwiches. However, this last time I went I noticed they changed their buns. They used to have regular hamburger like buns that would almost disintegrate they would get soggy from the meat and bbq sauce. That was the way I liked it, messy but delicious. Now they have these giant super thick bread buns that make the sandwich look like a subway sandwich. There is more bread than meat. I really don't like these new buns. Overall I did not enjoy my food this last time. The meat was real smoky and dry and required a ton of bbq sauce in order for it to taste right. I didn't like the beans either, they need to be have more of a bbq flavor. Overall my visit was disappointing and I don not think I will be back here again.

We ate here this weekend and it was sooooo good! Prices are very reasonable and it was a lot like Texas BBQ. Portions are large and if you like hot BBQ sauce ask them for some......

Great food, great service. Couldn't ask for much more. Definitely a must if you are stopping through Tehachapi.

AMAZING customer service which I really appreciated. Not something you find much of these days. The brisket was tender and the ribs were not dry, both loaded with nice smoky flavor. It was nice to be asked if we wanted sauce on our meats as we do not. The beans were creamy, the coleslaw was crunchy and nicely dressed. Has a lot of character inside as well. If you love bbq, give this spot a shot, you won't be disappointed! Thank you again for your wonderful staff.

I would swear if I didn't think Yelp! would censor me, but this place is that good. We had ribs and fried catfish with cornbread, Mac n cheese, side salad, rice and gravy, red coleslaw, and pento beans. We could find nothing wrong with the people or the food, in fact it was all incredible! Even the picky 11 year old loved it all. You can see the smoke line in the ribs, good and deep. The only negative I can think of is caraway seeds in the corn bread which my wife didn't like. If we lived there I would have a reserved table, I'm serious, I'd be there at least once a week. Great find, we were running late and decided to pit stop at this quaint little town, the only place open at that time we took a chance and found gold!, friendly staff, great BBQ and for the price it was superb! Now permanently enroute in our travel plans, we will make it a point to stop by on our way to Nevada. stop by the Red House BBQ, they wont disappoint!

First of all, this place is not prepared to serve orders to go. Which is fine, if they let you know before you order. I tried this place again, thinking maybe it would be better this time and again it failed to impress me. I ordered a small pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese, to go. Received a container with a good amount of pulled pork, a ciabatta bread and a side of Mac and cheese. On top of the pulled pork, was the tiniest amount of cole slaw that I've ever seen. Not even a tablespoon of coleslaw. But whatever, I got past that and assembled my sandwich and proceeded to be disappointed again. I doused it with the small container of bbq sauce that came with the meal and that didn't help the flavor at all. I did enjoy the Mac and cheese though. So I decided to go back the next day, just for a side of Mac and cheese. Wow was I surprised by the price of a small side. Over $4 for a tiny cup of Mac and cheese. I paid and asked for a fork or spoon to go... Oh they don't have any to go utensils. I guess that's why when I ordered my combo yesterday and got back to my room I realized they didn't give me utensils or napkins. I had to ask the hotel staff for a fork. You'd think that when someone places an order to go, this info would be provided. How is someone supposed to eat Mac and cheese without utensils or assemble a sandwich without utensils or eat bbq without napkins! To the Owner, I understand you can't please everyone. However, this site is meant to be used to express your likes or dislikes of a business. Your essay long responses to low reviews, makes you look insecure about your business. Low reviews should help owners make the changes needed to better their business, not help them make excuses. Maybe spend more time pleasing customers while they're at your restaurant, than reading reviews and responding.

Been here before and truly love it here! Live kinda far to come here once a week but honestly it's delicious, so if you're a foodie looking for a great shack with delicious Indian tacos or just fry bread, this is the place. There were four of us dining LAST night and it was my husbands first time. We decided to share two things so he could try stuff. I got the Indian taco and he got the half rack with chili Mac and cornbread. Oh and a aside if fried pickles! The lady came out to inform us they ran out of ground beef and we had a choice of brisket or pulled pork. Beef brisket all the way baby! My oh my everything was delicious. Loved the smokey flavor of the bbq. They ask if you want bbq sauce and stuff on the side, I'm guessing the owner is a dry rib enthusiast which is fine, everyone is different. Chili Mac was great and I'm the type of person who doesn't eat Mac and cheese unless I make it, it does need a little pepper or more chili flavor, but that might have just been the bite I took without chili. The fried pickles? I LOVE FRIED PICKLES!!!!!I saw some review for this place, "fried pickles were spears not slices" who cares if it's spears or slices it's still freaking delicious! The Indian taco is where you get your money worth! Huge massive thing piled on with deliciousness all into a beautifully fried Indian fry bead! This one takes a little longer as a heads up because it's cooked to order, so if ten people ordered before you, sit back relax and enjoy your company...it's worth it. All in all, my family and I loved it! Will for sure be back when we are in town. Oh and pay your respects at the memory wall and table...it's beautiful. Well done guys! Side bar info: closed Tuesdays, elder discount, cash discount, they have to go.

visit on 1-2-15 have been to Red House a few times and the food is great. But by far the best part are the ladies that do all the fixing of the food unlike a triditional food joint where the waiters and waitreses serve your food these hard working ladies not only serve you but also put the plates together they work hard as this place is busy and not fast food. Because of the way you order and pay then sit and then get served the triditional way to tip is not availible as there is only a tip jar at the register.....and most folks seem to miss or are just not use to this method.( Dumb Dumb Dumb theses hard working ladies get ripped off when it comes to the tip for these excellent work and service.) So I want to say thank you to SAVANNA. CHELSY AND THE OTHER LADIES WORKING TODAY ..... .. AND DONT FORGET TO PUT A BIG TIP IN THERE JAR visit 2-1-15 Went back to RED House Yesterday and just as I thought it would be, it was Packed! I was not surprised because it was Super Bowl Sunday and thought it would be. Great food as always however, who ever did the scheduling for the employees this day did not do a great job, ( never enough help here and that is why it does not get the full 5 stars) as there were only two Ladies to work the counter, take your order, make your plates, serve the food, and follow up! Now one of them was new and in the middle of being trained, the other one Savanna was working very very hard to keep everyone happy ( Owner was there also. May May and she is great and helping out on the floor,) but Savanna was trying hard to do it all and train the new lady.... They needed more help, not just that day but on most days this place seems like it could always use one or two more employees on the floor to make it run right. as it seems like the ladies work a lot harder then need be and that makes the wait time longer then it needs to be, and that is the weak area of this place it would rate a full 5 stars if only they would do a better job having enough of the great help they already have. But still excellent food

OMG!!! This place rocks!!! It is so worth the hour plus drive that I have to make to get there. Their smoked meat is perfect, don't really care for a couple of their sides however. The staff is always polite and my drink is never empty. Love their out door dining are too. If you're within an hours drive, make it you'll be happy!!!!

One if the best places ever, in reference to the food the service and the hospitality. The food wow great taste warmed just right and I love their sweet tea. The owner is wonderful always coming around asking if you need anything man I love this place and they are pro military which makes me want to support this place even more. If anyone wants to learn about customer service tho is the place

The food is great, and the atmosphere is unique, with 80's hard rock in the background and writing and signature covering every white wall space. The people are fascinating as well, and I swear it felt like walking into a television show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the Sookie Stackhouse series. The three girls working there, the gruff guy in the back, the teenage busboy, and especially the oriental lady that seemed like a manager/hostess/comic relief character all looked as though you would not be surprised to see the place attacked by demons, who would then be dispatched by the staff before they got back to the grill or dropped some fried pickle spears (which are quite good by the way). I have seriously never seen a place that so begs to be the setting for a novel. For people that had trouble with customer service, that was not my experience at all. The oriental lady was practically falling all over herself making sure we were satisfied and had everything we needed. I was there with my blind father-in-law and two year old son and they were very accommodating, making sure there was plenty of room to move around and heading me off at the pass, offering to retrieve a high chair from the other side of the restaurant (and it was a functional high chair, which is a rarity). I do not doubt the negative experiences that others have had, but they really could not be more different from the experience I had with my family. As a group we had the pulled pork, ribs, fried catfish (long strips with cornmeal coating), red slaw, potato wedges, BBQ chicken, fried pickle spears, and fry bread. They were all very good. The ribs had a bit too much fat for my wife, but a perfect amount for me, and the sides, while not the best example of anything we have had, were tasty and plentiful. If based on the food alone I would probably give it 4 stars(which is still darn good), but the unique atmosphere and people make this a one-of-a-kind place that I would recommend to anyone visiting Tehachapi, and originality always gets an extra star in my book. :)

This is the best BBQ restaurant I have ever been to. I absolutely LOVE the brisket. It's smoky and so tender. The mac and cheese is creamy and flavorful. The chili, oh my God, the chili. It is very spicy and when you order it they will warn you. However, if you like spicy you will most likely love the chili. I recently tried the Indian Fry bread and I was very pleased. It is delicious with powdered sugar, butter and honey. *You get a slight discount if you pay in cash!

They were sold out of brisket! I'm bummed I couldn't try it, but true bbq places always run out of stuff because it's cooked authentically. The mac and cheese was delicious! The ribs were fall of the bone delicious! The chicken and pulled pork were pretty darn good and the Indian fry bread was delicious! Overall, it was a great place to stop and have dinner. Very very happy we could fit it into our road trip!

If you're extra lucky like I was today, when you order your amazingly smoky, tender beef brisket plate with your side of vinegary, sweet red slaw, you might just have the fortune to add the chili mac n' cheese as your second side item. Freaking freak crap that stuff is so good! I mean the regular mac and cheese is a pile of cheesy, creamy awesomeness, but this is a bazillion times better. Spiked with cayenne, chunks of roasted green chiles, specks of red chile and OH MY GOD there's MEAT in it!! Seriously, they freaking put meat I'm their mac n' cheese. Meat... So good. Go here. Oh, the service is supreme and everyone is super nice too but damn, meat in mac n' cheese...

  • Eric A.

This is a great BBQ joint. The prices are fair and the portions are humongous. When I feel daring I order the full rack of ribs and spend the next couple hours picking at it. I'm not a fan of the other items on the menu and learned to just stick to the ribs. Service is usually really good with an attentive staff that asks if you'd like refills.

Indian taco. Where can you get these outside of New Mexico? A delicious Indian taco is reason enough for a five star rating, but they also threw in friendly service. Wow. My man and I were looking for a place to eat while we traveled back to Vegas from Tulare and we did not want the standard grab and go fast food. We searched Yelp and saw that this BBQ place had a high rating, so we headed in that direction. When we arrived we were a little hesitant to go in because it was a small town and looked like a small place... we were not sure if this place would welcome a couple like ourselves with open arms. We have had not so great reception in small towns, so one of us has to go and scope out the scene before we make an entrance. Not all places are mixed couple friendly. I know it is 2013, but this is a truth we have learned first hand in our travels. So, we go inside and it is completely awesome! Nothing at all like we envisioned it to be. There were super friendly folks of all types. The prices are reasonable. The Indian taco is fried bread in the shape of a small pizza, at this place, topped with beans, ground beef, shredded cheese, AMAZING diced tomato, spring mix (no thanks) and sour cream. I could only eat half, the rest I boxed to go. It is not a table service type restaurant. You order your food at the counter and they bring it to your table. There is a lovely patio are in the back where they do the BBQing and there is plenty of shade (also plenty of flies). They also offer a cash discount. Enjoy!

Awesome BBQ food, greeted as you walk in, fast service, would definitely recommend. We ate ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Ribs were by far the best, amazing taste and fell right off the bone. Can't wait to stop by again.

If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Originally from thx south so I know bbq! This is the BEST BBQ I've ever had and all the sides are amazing. The BBQ chicken was so delicious. My hubs had the ribs - so freakin' meaty and moist! Our friend had the pulled pork sandwich and he raved about it. Fried pickles were so good and the mac n cheese was OMG the best!!! Small mom n pop place but super friendly staff and a great place to stop if your on a motorcycle trip ... Which is what we did!

Haven't been here myself since I live in NY, but my wife and I needed to send food to our family in CA who is caring for our sick Uncle Ray. We called and spoke to Lydia and Mano they were both more than helpful. They do not take phone orders nor do they deliver but in this case they went out of their way and did both. Ordered the Family Feast along with some deserts. Mother-in-law, Aunts, Uncle and Grandfather all raved at the great food. Hats off to both Lydia and Mano. You delivered more than food, delivered a reason to make people smile on a hardest of times. Hope to get out there and try it ourselves and thank you in person. Rich and Jen.

Traveling to Joshua Tree from SF Bay Area with my lovely lady and stumbled upon this spot. We were blown away by the ribs which we have tried all over the country and this is by far our favorite. We are looking for an excuse to return to the area for several days so we can try the whole menu.

This place was highly suggested by others to try. We're glad we tried it. The BBQ itself was good. The brisket was good. Highly suggest you order it as a sandwich. The ribs were divine. So good! The chicken was tasty, really preferred the dark meat over the white meat though. The white meat was dry. As far as the sides were concerned, my husband and I had our favorites. The fried pickles were spectacular! I loved the Mac and cheese. Creamy and cheesy goodness. The cornbread was dry. The pot of beans were just a pot of beans, maybe pinto beans. I was expecting some kind of sweet, baked beans. Next time we go I'll be ordering ribs with a side of Mac n cheese.

Having lived in Oklahoma and Missouri, I've developed a deep and abiding love of all things BBQ. What I gained in quality Mexican fare by moving back to California I certainly lost in solid BBQ. Thank the heavens I found Red House! As other reviewers have stated, it's not the *best* BBQ I've ever had. I wonder if this is because they simply offer SO MUCH in the way of variety. Certainly--about that, I'm not complaining. I haven't had a single dish that wasn't top-tier. This is definitely tied for best BBQ in California (and the rest are so far below it's hardly worth placing them). So, my suggestion is that it should be considered a cardinal sin to pass through Tehachapi and not stop at the Red House.

Went to Red House the other day.......Great Food Great Food and Great food.... but Best of all was one of the young ladies that works there by the Name Of Savanna .............. Cant say enough great things about here ... she was the most helpful and nice to order from she explained everything and as she looked like she had had a very hard day with lots of customers and had been on her feet all day she was just as nice as can be, reminded me of my own daughter, I would have thought she was the owner, as hard as she was working and as great as she talked about the place, Re: how good the food was and she was right as I said .... Great Food, oh ya all the other folks were great also but I wish I could get Savanna to come work for me, and I told her so, but she said she loved it there.... everyone should go to the RED HOUSE and say Hi to Savanna

I was going to tehachapi quite often for work and tried several restaurants during the time, this place made my list of top 3 places to eat in the town. The menu had a lot of options, but their ribs and macaroni are to die for. If you eat bbq and find yourself in this little mountain town, eat here.

We've been happy every time we've eaten here. The pulled pork sandwich is delicious, and I appreciate the red slaw (which is hard to find elsewhere). Worth the drive, no matter how long it takes!

Amazing food and service! I'm from Alabama and this place reminded me of a southern BBQ place from back home. Country music playing the whole time. I loved this place and will definitely come back! ALSO, they have good southern style sweet tea which is rare to find around here!

  • Bill H.

This was excellent BBQ. Ate here after the beer festival and was worried the ratings might be due to lack of options. Not at all. The food is good and the sides were spot on. Would recommend this to anyone who says they like BBQ.

I'm surprised that I hadn't written a review based on a previous visit. The food here is outstanding! I had a pulled pork sandwich that was the best that I've eaten. The menu is extensive and the prices are reasonable. Although it was a bit cold when we stopped in for lunch last week, there is a very nice, spacious patio out back; even with a couple of tepees. We were also spared the usual obnoxious country music that plays in many BBQ joints. Sounded like Classic Vinyl on XM Satellite Radio. The young Asian woman, who I believe to be the owner, is very friendly and helpful (not to mention HOT!) :-)

Delicious BBQ at a very reasonable price and large portions! The place it self is pretty cool as well. Easy to kill time waiting on your food just by looking around at all the stuff on the walls.

I've been cooking since I was 10 yrs old, I know good food. This place won't let you down. My wife had the bbq baked potato with pulled pork, I had the brisket. The meat was so good juicy and tender and the sides were pretty tasty. It would've been 5* from me if I would've received and better portion of mac n cheese. When you order to-go ask for your side in separate containers.

  • Emily G.

Pretty good. I know us folks from the south compare every BBQ restaurant to what we're used to. Red House is good. It's not the best BBQ I've ever had, but it's the best I've had in California (besides my dad's). And at least it's real brisket, not tri tip. The brisket could have been trimmed & sliced better, but it was tender and had good flavor. And hallelujah they had pinto beans as a side- bbq isn't complete without pinto beans! The fried pickles were tasty, and the fresh fruit was really fresh sliced fruit. Like I said, not the best ever, but the best you're going to get in California. It's pretty good.

I'd say this is the place to get BBQ in Tehachapi. It definitely has character. Ribs - excellent Pulled pork - very good Brisket - very very good, a little tiny bit dry. Lady at the table next to us had a salad with brisket on it. It looked AMAZING. I would get that next time. My son LOVED the mac-n-cheese side. I liked it as well, but I've had better. Potato salad was really good. Service is exceptional. Since I live close to the beach, I'd say this place need some serious AC. I would definitely come here again.

Red House BBQ was probably one of the best catering choices we could have made for our wedding. The guests loved the food and it was so affordable! Not only that but I (the bride) am a vegetarian, so Mono (the owner) made sure to include my very own GIANT salad to eat instead of the BBQ everyone else had. Between that and a few generous helpings of mac and cheese, I was superbly satisfied. My husband, on the other hand, is very excited about all of the leftover meat he gets to eat for the next week. Would definitely recommend. The entire wait staff is so cool as well!

Wow, that's really the only word that comes to mind when I think about my restaurant experience. I was in Tehachapi for work and thought I would try out this place based on recommendations of everyone I talked to. I ordered the brisket sandwich with macaroni & cheese as my side. The sandwich was huge and the brisket so tender and flavorful. There are no words to express how good the macaroni and cheese tasted but you definitely need to try it! My coworker got a half rack of ribs and he let me try some. The rib meat was so tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The restaurant was clean and loved the classic rock music they had playing. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that likes the non chain barbecue chain vibe and taste.

I had the pulled pork sandwich tonight........ so tasty! The mac and cheese is yummy goodness! My favorite dish is the Honey Bourbon Wet Ribs..... seriously good! No wonder they call it meat candy! Staff was so friendly! A local favorite..... ! A must stop for out of towners!

Not hip, not haute, just great honest barbecue. Love the brisket and ribs. Great sauce and sides -- even the iced tea. Friendly, extremely helpful service. Well worth the drive up from LA.

Dynamite! I shouldn't even write a review. The word dynamite says it all! Ok, a small one. Took the family here for lunch on a Saturday. Sat out back, by the teepees. The weather was perfect! Now the food.... It was fantastic. I had half chicken with chili and fruit. The wife had brisket and ribs with mac and wedges. The young daughter had kids rib plate with wedges. We all definitely had enough food. My chicken was great, the chili was tasty and spicy. Everybody else raved about their food. The service was great. I believe we met one of the owners who was a super nice fellow. We eat in Bakersfield quiet a bit, and I can say without a doubt that Red House blows away any BBQ place in Btown. Best BBQ I have had in many years.

Red House BBQ is worth stopping for. We had the pork ribs and brisket with fried pickles and mac & cheese. The brisket was moist and flavorful and the ribs had just the pull from the bone. I left full but wondering how the chicken and catfish must taste. Good food. Fun atmosphere with outdoor seating. The only quirky thing is the abrupt counter where you order your food. You run right into the line as soon as you enter.

Great food, funky atmosphere & even better people watching. Started the night with a few beers and some ribs while enjoying the outdoor dining. Ended the night hanging with some locals and their families. And did I say good food? I mean really good food! And u gotta get it while it's there cause when it's gone it's gone! All in all a gem in the middle of nowhere!

Really good BBQ and we love to go there when we visit Tehachapi! Downside, last time we ate way too much! LOL it is that good! :)

The real deal. Don't wait till Bakersfield to eat lunch or dinner. Best BBQ in Kern County. I love how the sandwich is served on a robust sourdough roll- which is a welcome regional twist on BBQ. Brisket was perfect- I liked it better than the pulled pork. Red slaw is great. Don't pass Techachapi without a stop here

So good we ordered another full rack of ribs to go! Red slaw and fry bread were yummy too. Nice funky roadhouse atmosphere. And the staff were all super friendly!

This BBQ joint is incredibly good given the out of the way location. Our family loved the Indian Fry Bread the best, with powdered sugar, butter, and honey. All the BBQ was perfect - pulled pork and pulled chicken as good as the best I have had in Austin, TX. Be aware that the chili is delicious but quite spicy. Finally, the fried pickles are worth ordering. They were spicy, crunchy, and piping hot. Wash it down with the sweet tea or a craft brew from their well-stocked frig. Best road trip dinner you can find if you are passing through this town.

  • Levi R.

They have a pretty good selection of craft beer. Especially for a random BBQ house that you would only expect to have bud light or coors. I ordered the brisket. It was great, though I have had better. The fried pickles are ok. I happily ate them. They seem like they are frozen though. I've heard it's one of the best in town, though I haven't had much of the other food in town. Maybe I'll find out later this week. Mac and cheese was decent. A bit fake creamy for me, but not bad.

Where shall I start? First off, I think I am the only Asian person in this BBQ joint (and perhaps the whole of Tehachapi as well. *Nevermind, the owner of the restaurant is Asian). Secondly, I was expecting a Phil's BBQ type experience - with the stellar ratings and all - but this doesn't even come miles close. I got the brisket with 2 sides for $15 dollars (with tax, not including tip). Low-down: - At 6pm on a weekday most meats had run out! Only brisket and chicken were left. Call in to check which meats are available; meat selection changes nightly. - The mac and cheese was sooooooo bland! They are long and fun looking though. - The meat was sooooooo salty! I put some in the fridge for next day and all the places with fat turned white and I had to scrap it off cause they have the weirdest texture. - The chili was spicy without flavor. It also had some shredded meat in it - flavorless shredded meat. It seems like the sides were made to compliment the salty brisket and sauce. - Service was efficient and nice, without the friendliness - Saltiness aside, hot sauce was pretty good. - The interior was of "Native American!" and "Wilderness!" and "Nature!"; Flags were raised of the Marine Corps, Navy, Airforce, etc; an old record player stood off to the side, statues or stuffed versions of animals littered the dining area, a for-real waterfall adorned a corner of the room and painted greenery splashed across the backdrop. - 47 person capacity inside. Picnic benches and tables outside. - No phone in orders - Nice selection of beers [Apology to the owners: 1. Yes, dressing down was an obvious comment I obviously didn't need to make. But since I peeled myself out of my coat and professional attire to eat with my hands, I decided to make a useless suggestion. (I will take that out of my review) 2. I actually quite enjoy working in Tehachapi and the company of the townsfolk besides, despite the almost 2 hour drive. It's part of the reason why I would personally pay for a hotel room to stay overnight and venture out and try different local flavors instead driving back like my other co-workers. I think we can both agree that Tehachapi is cute mountain town. 3. I see that I am clearly in the minority with my review of 3 stars, which must anger you firstly because I rarely give low stars and secondly because you don't seem to handle criticism well. I actually read through all the reviews and though there was another hapless individual you insulted because of his 3 stars, your first response to a low review showed a lot of class in the handling of the situation. As a restaurant owner, having a racist stranger not appreciating the food you worked hard to cook must be infuriating - and I agree as you suggest, my tastebuds might be broken with all the hot spices I devour. 4. I intended my observation on the decor as humor but I see you clearly thought my comment was offensive so I will also take out the joking. 5. And here I was thinking I was the only Asian person in Tehachapi! I clearly forgot the Asian lady assisting me at the hotel and all the Asian people at the pharmacy. Not to mention the lady who owns said restaurant! What an idiot I must surely be to expect the internet crowd to catch the tongue-in-cheek joking in my racial quips! College in that aspect can dull one's sensitivity to racial slurs and smear apathy with one's ethnicity. That was very inconsiderate of me to play the damsel in distress at your expense and for that I apologize. 6. I have no doubt that it was an off-night for the restaurant due to the sparkling reviews and the sold-out menu, though another person had told me they also found the brisket to be on the salty side so they usually order the ribs. It was also inconsiderate of me to want to phone in my order, like I do at Phil's to avoid the 2 hour wait - I apologize also for my spoiled attitude. I was going to make a another trip to sample the rest of menu to see if my tastebuds would randomly heal and my ratings would change, but seeing that I am not welcome I wish the pair of you the best with your endeavors in China! Ps. Thanks for the note about Denny's - I will keep that in mind! ]

The food was very tasty but something in it went right through my body. My husband and I shared the pulled pork sandwich, pinto beans and a green salad. The place was recommended to us by someone whose judgement we value. When we drove up and saw the motorcycles in the parking lot, we both said we would have never stopped on our own. You have to order at the counter. They give you 3% discount for cash and an additional 10% discount if you're "old." If there was air conditioning it wasn't working. It doesn't feel very clean and I'm not certain we would ever go again.

I'm coming here again, soon. Their food is amazing, as well as the service. I had the BBQ Cobb Salad with pulled pork. I ordered it with blue cheese dressing on the side, but didn't even touch the stuff. I used their spicy bbq sauce instead on my salad, which was delicious. This was a huge salad for only $10.95.

THIS PLACE is more like the "Mecca of BBQ" not papas place (notice my review for that one...) Huge portions of delicious food for a low cost. It is sooo good. Walking in, the atmosphere is great. I must remember to bring a couple sharpies next time I go so that I can sign the wall! This place is worth the trip to Tehachapi!

Coming from San Luis Obispo where we have AMAZING Santa Maria style bbq, this place is just as amazing! We had 'the feast' ( I think that's what it was called ) and easily fed a family of 6! Soooo much food! Brisket, pulled pork, whole chicken, pork ribs, 4 ciabatta style buns, choice of 2 sides. They have one bbq sauce that is super spicy and tasty! ( I didn't try the other one that is supposedly sweet ) They have a TON of sides to choose from like mac & cheese, fried pickles, spicy chili, beans, red slaw, coleslaw, cornbread, etc...my favorites were the red slaw and pulled pork. Everyone else loved the rest! I do love spicy AND chili but this chili wasn't my favorite :-( we ended up buying a bunch more sides just to try out and glad we did! You walk in and order, then pick a table or go outside and sit in a teepee! They have one really attentive waitress that keeps your drinks refilled and tends to all your table needs. She was great! Gonna come back when visiting again!

Headed south and saw all the great reviews. This place did not disappoint! Ribs were off the hook with a spicy bbq sauce that was just right. Deep fried pickles and mac and cheese that was incredible. Ca by wait for another trip!

We have been eating at this restaurant since they opened. Their portions use to be big enough to share but when we went last week and shared the chicken dinner we were very disappointed with the size of the half chicken. My husband commented "maybe it is cornish hen"!! We did try the fried pickle spears and they were very good but again a small portion. Manno really knows how to smoke meat I just wish he had not downsized the portions.

Took a day trip to Tehachapi and stopped here. Walked in and looked up at the menu to make our order. After we placed our order we headed outside to sit. Really liked the outdoor area. There are a bunch of picnic style tables and a teepee! I had the chicken sandwich with a side of slaw which was good. I also had a root beer which was delicious. My dining partner got a pulled pork and chili Mac which he enjoyed. Finger lickin good :)

Stopped in for lunch today - this is an order at the counter, take a number, and wait for your food to be brought out kinda place. Decor - funky and cool inside. Outside tee pees I think you can eat in (didn't check them out ). We sat at the picnic tables under the shade and were nicely protected from the sun. Staff - beyond helpful explaining menu items. Were upfront about menu items they didn't have. Checked on all the tables while we were waiting - super friendly and wanted to make sure everyone was satisfied. Now the best part, the food! We all got the pulled pork sandwich with a side. The pulled pork was great. As others have mentioned you can see the smoke ring (BBQ smoked on site, out back). I loved the ciabatta like roll that it came on. I got the small size and had half left over for later. Yum! I love when I have leftovers. (I could have easily eaten the whole thing, but I refrained) FYI - the sandwich comes with a honey mustard sauce and cole slaw (the lady at the counter made sure we were ok with that). I was uncertain if I would like it, but it was pretty tasty!! However - as some other reviews mention, you might want to ask for that on the side. You also have the choice between extra barbecue sauce- either regular or spicy. I liked the regular one better, but the spicy was popular with my group too. I got the Mac and cheese with chili as my side. I was originally disappointed that I couldn't get their plain Mac and cheese - pictures/reviews on yelp looked amazing. However, the chili Mac and cheese was AMAZING. it even have pulled pork mixed in!! Personally, I think this should be a staple. We also got the red cabbage side - tasted like regular cabbage and was not my favorite side (but I'm not a fan in general). Dining companion really liked it. Especially since most cabbages are heavily drenched in mayo and this one was not. The only mediocre part of the meal was the potato salad. Was definitely mashed potatoes! They were ok, but not great. However, not enough to take the enjoyment out of a great meal! Next time we are in the area, we will be back!!

The BBQ here is awesome! Better than Phil's in San Diego. The sides-not so much, but you don't go to a BBQ place for salad, so who cares! Get the ribs and the 1/2 chicken. Not sure why they won't let you call in your order, but maybe they have had problems with naughty diners not showin' up.

Never really had good brisket until this place - it was amazing! Not dry like other places I've been to and not smothered with BBQ sauce either. It was great by itself. Ribs are excellent! Worth driving an hour to. Definitely a place my husband and I would always go back to for REAL BBQ.

Delicious. Fairly priced. Friendly and engaged staff. A wonderful find. It's small inside and things are a little crowded but this place is the real deal. So many others have written wonderful reviews. Believe the hype... We'll definitely be back. Worth the drive from LA. My husband was planning his next trip before we'd even left.

Fantastic food and atmosphere. I'm from North Carolina, and their pulled pork BBQ reminds me of home, but they use a sweet sauce instead of vinegar-based. Good portions and food for the price.

I've been looking forward to visiting the Red House for a long time, and today my mom and I finally made it up the mountain to try it. Unfortunately, we had very different experiences here - so I'll have to give this place a mixed review. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of Red House Chili; both were worth 5 stars each! The pork almost melted in my mouth it was so tender and juicy! The sauce was sweet and tangy all at once, and the roll fresh as can be. The chili was tasty, with meat, red beans, black beans and the perfect combination of herbs and spices. Now on to my mother's tri-tip sandwich. She kept telling me that the meat was too dry and chewy so I asked for a couple of pieces to see if she was being overly critical. The pieces she randomly pulled out were tough and difficult to chew. One was mostly gristle; I couldn't chew it at all and had to spit it out on the plate. The flavor was good, it was just the texture that was off - 2 stars :( She ordered the mac and cheese as a side and it was actually pretty good - I'd give it 3 1/2 stars easy. So what to do about the stars? two items were 5+ stars, one was 3 stars, and one was 2 stars. Fourteen stars divided by 4 items equals 3 1/2 stars. The workers were cheerful and helpful and the decor was the epitome of local charm so I gifted them the last 1/2 star. We wouldn't try the tri-tip sandwich again, but I'd like to come back and try the ribs.

This is the type of experience that doesn't make my day; it is going to make and define at least a month of my life. Since moving to California from Texas, I have truly missed careful, precise and delicious BBQ. Well, today, on a long-ass drive from Flagstaff to SF, I stopped for lunch in Tehachapi. I was a tad early, before the lunch crowd, and they took good care of me. Excellent folks here. I ordered a pulled-pork sandwich, red slaw side, plus mac-n-cheese (today, mixed with brisket chili.) Just, wow. Every bite was flawless, and I've been sort of walking on air ever since. Please try Red House. Get comfortable, show up hungry, and talk with the staff. You won't regret it. Even though Red House is about 350 miles from my house, I'm definitely going to find a way to get back here. THANK YOU!

Really good food. Mac n cheese- excellent, Red slaw- excellent, brisket sandwich- really tender but several very fatty pieces were in it which should have been trashed. Ribs- tender but kinda dry. Menu is big chalkboard on the wall, for those that haven't been there it isn't very helpful. It doesn't give any description to the food. The inside and outside seating areas are not the cleanest.

Passing through Tehachapi we stopped here for dinner. St. Louis style ribs were great. No sauce needed. Very tender. Chicken was the same. The red chili was a little heavy on the cumin flavor for me. Mac and cheese was real good and when mixed with the chili, well I loved chili a little more. Wish we could have tried the brisket and pulled pork and fry bread. It is obviously a popular place and the staff are so friendly.

I had my BEST MEAL EVER at Red House last night: 1 pound of finger-nail-sucking Cajun goodness garlic shrimp, the legendary mac and cheese and fried cabbage (not what you're thinking, not even close). We took an Indian fry bread home for dessert. Shrimp at a barbeque place miles from the ocean/and or purveyors of quality seafood down in the city? Go for it! OMG! Their Cajun garlic preparation was the best shrimp I've had since I was last in New Orleans. It's peel and eat, but the huge shrimp tails were soooo worth it. If you have problems pulling the shell and legs off of shrimp, don't bother buying and leave more for me (you probably don't belong in a barbeque place either). The mac and cheese was a worthy investment in fat and carbs, as usual. The second surprise for the meal was the fried cabbage. Yep, this is the good stuff. Tender, tender cabbage doctored up with bacon and HOMINY (if you don't know what hominy is, then you have really missed out). Try it, you'll understand. It's not going to replace the mac and cheese in my heart, but it's coming close. Bonus Take Home Item: Indian fry bread. I took MOST of a piece home (you can't really stay in a confined space, like a car, with the Indian fry bread without eating SOME of it). When my husband's back was turned, I snagged a small piece and slathered some Nutella on it. The fry bread is delicious plain, but the Nutella made it total carbliciousness!

To start off: the staff is wonderful, always friendly and following up with you at the table to be sure you have enough of whatever you need. We had a small conversation with the owner on Saturday when we were in and he said they sell about 600 pounds of meat a week! 600 POUNDS people, that alone should tell you how good this place is! You just cant go wrong with Red House, being a local of Tehachapi I might seem biased but I have never had food that made me happy like Red House does. Saturdays they offer the "Rib of the Beast" and my husband, mother and father in law and I had two orders of this deliciously HUGE, tender bone in meat. To best describe it, its at least a foot long beef rib bone with a huge portion of rib eye meat that's smoked to perfection. The bone comes with your choice of two sides for $22.00, but don't let the price scare you, this can EASILY be shared by two people. Its rib eye bone meat overload! I believe they only offer these on Saturdays and I hear many Saturdays they sell out of them before they even open for business due to pre orders, but if your here and they have some, get it! I strongly believe that the prices here are great for the quality, service and quantity they provide. They pride themselves on buying only choice meats and a lot of seasonal and local grown items so you can be assured that their food is fresh and not loaded with preservatives. I have never left the Red House and felt bloated from too much salt like a lot of other places make me feel. I love to cook, its a complete joy to me. Because of this, I don't really like to eat out a lot. To me I feel why spend money on food I can make just as well at home for a whole lot less. But I don't feel that way when I come here. There is just no way I can recreate what they do here, not even close! And why try really when I can sit and enjoy everything they have to offer. Quick Tips: Best time to go is right after 5pm, that's when they pull the meat out of the smoker at its prime. The brisket melts in your mouth, you can easily share the chicken & brisket plate I have tried the red slaw, mac and cheese, chili mac, chili, pork ribs, fry bread, cat fish, and I cant complain about any of them. If your here on a Friday try the 1 lb pork chop, I hear its amazing. Thanks everyone at Red House, you guys are a true gem in this small town!

The staff is awesome!! They are so friendly, know their menu, and always have a smile. The food, is GREAT!!! BBQ rib with cornbread and potato salad was the best I have had!! For a small town, this place rocks !!! I have had the pulled pork, brisket and the ribs. The ribs are my favorite!!! I cannot emphasize how great the staff is. They are one of the best staff around. In this day and age, you don't always find such nice people, but come here, and you will. A five star all the way

I had catfish and my husband had ribs. Both were really good. The Mac n Cheese was a little too cheesy for me but my husband liked the 'pot beans'. We both liked the red slaw.....red cabbage with a vinegar & oil dressing. Good sweet tea, too! If we ever visit this area again, we'll definitely come back here. Warning: closed on Tuesday!!

This was exquisite! What a fantastic meal our group had here! We took a day trip up to Tehachapi from Bakersfield to see the apples in season, and little did we know that we were in for a treat here at Red House. These guys do BBQ right, it's absolutely fantastic. We tried the Brisket, the Pulled Pork, their ribs, and their signature catfish. All were great, but the Catfish and the Ribs stand alone as some of the best we've ever had. There really wasn't too much good BBQ options in Bakersfield or where I'm originally from in Orange County, but the food is so honest and well done and the staff here is so friendly that we would have no problem making the trip back here from Bakersfield. What a pleasure!

We stopped for late lunch yesterday. The storefront, restaurant ambiance, and service is authentic TX BBQ. The smell of smoked meat and the menu is spot on. We had rack of ribs and brisket with sides; both entrees were surprisingly good and very close to Texas BBQ, ribs authentic but brisket smoked correctly yet served differently than TX BBQ. All sides were excellent; MacNCheese, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and Red Slaw. Portions large. Prices reflective of type of menu and portion sizes, two entrees with two sides and two teas was $40. The pricing is typical of TX BBQ; labor and meat are not cheap. I spoke to owner. He is from Austin, TX. This is the first California-located BBQ that I can say really replicates the BBQ of Texas. Stop for BBQ; it is easy off/on to Hwy 58.

Absolutely superb. As we arrived, we noticed: meat actively smoking out back next to the outdoor seating area; order at the counter, take a number, grab your own utensils, sit at big wooden tables; menu with ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and numerous sides; entire rolls of paper towels at every table. What's not to like???? Oh, and the food was great too. I would describe the ribs as Santa Maria style: seasoned and smoked, and if you want barbecue sauce you add your own later. Ribs melt in your mouth, nice slaw, good fruit, fantastic mac and cheese. Worth a trip from anywhere.

Best BBQ west of the Mississippi, well maybe West of Texas... I find even the weakest excuses to drive from Los Angeles to Tehachapi just so I can eat here. Pulled pork, Wonderful. Brisket, Amazing. And half the time, I forget about the sauce, and go in bare... Reminds me of some of my favorites in Texas...

I love their red slaw and pulled pork sandwiches. Simply good food. They get busy, but be patient because their food is so worth the time. Hearty, flavorful and seems like real food instead of products from a food science test lab. If you like huge portions, get the Indian taco, but it was too much for me and I'm a big eater.

Let's get it started: I like this place for many reasons, I'll just go ahead and lay those reasons out and you make the call from there. Indian Fry bread: Did someone say rad and delicious? I think one order of it is meant for two adults, but I can always order a full meal and aggressively eat one of these for myself ( I will cut a dude or broad if they get near my bread) Indian Taco: Okay so take my love of fry bread add taco fixings, ground beef or other types of meat (I usually opt for the brisket) grab a side of that spicy BBQ sauce and melt. Ever Changing menu: As of writing this I still have not tried everything on the menu, including the menu regulars, which is frustrating because as I have illustrated above I already have a few favorites, so it's increasingly difficult to do the whole menu when certain items are only temporary. But I totally dig that, there are menu items that are regulars so if you are like me and sometimes like to develop a "usual" you'll have no problem doing that; one thing to note since they pretty much make what they make sometimes the more popular dishes may run out for that day, but I actually dig that as well sure I might be on the losing end of that one day, but at least I know there's some fresh, and quality happening in this place. So I really actually prefer it this way. Red slaw: I'm a usual Coleslaw happy kind of guy I'll admit the cheaper the better, but this changes my mind on my school cafeteria slaw philosophy, it's purple it's not mayonnaise-y it's just fresh and vibrant (lol I'm using fancy talk i'm such a pompous idiot) Home made hot sauce: I love spicy sauce, I want it hot, I want it flavorful, and I want to laugh as my wussy vanilla eating friends turn red and cry when they try to taste it. Well this place has two sauces that the owner makes himself you can buy it by the bottle or try it by the toothpick...Damn it I love spicy shit. Mammoth Beer: Yeah I like that stuff. Atmosphere: Really nice place it has a fountain thing inside there, and uh...Tee Pees....(crap hold on while I check google)...uh it has tepees out back you can I assume eat in when it's warm enough. So it's pretty much a place I could blow an hour talking with friends (remember there is beer) Stats: Value: It's worth what it costs, the quality is top notch, the flavor is there it can be pricey if you order for a small family. I can't say that I'd go there more than several times a month based on my tiny paycheck, but what I can say that it's on my list of usual haunts (meaning every chance I get I try to go) Jack Nicholsons: I give it a luxury lizard. In Closing: Yes I know I sound like some all praising suck up, but damn it I like this place it's not like I'm super this way for all the places I eat! So yeah man just cut me some slack stop being so untrusting you tool. DONE.

YES PLEASE! This place is a great BBQ spot. Don't get too hooked on the mac and cheese because they seem to run out of some of the stuff mid to late week. Their fry bread is yum, so are the ribs, mashed potatoes, cornbread (they put fennel in there that goes really well with cornbread), and the pulled pork sandwich. I thought only the best BBQ was in Texas. Boy was I wrong....

BBQs don't get much better than this. We got "small" portions of everything and couldn't imagine what a "large" would be. The meat was about as tender as it gets without being mushy, and packed with so must flavor that adding extra bbq sauce would cover it up.

Tehachapi isn't exactly known for stellar food so this place is a real gem. I'll admit right off the bat that even though I've been there 5 or 6 times I have only had two main dishes from their ever-changing menu so this is by no means a broad review. First the menu: I love that it isn't constant. That being said, I still refuse to order anything but the pulled pork sandwich. They have a nice variety from bbq'd ribs and chicken to delicious hot sandwiches. Now for specific reviews: **Pulled Pork Sandwich rocks my world. It is tender, flavorful, and juicy. The bun is soaked with delicious meaty goodness before it even reaches the table. 5 stars **Red Slaw, at its best is crunchy and the perfect combo of sweet and sour. On some occasions it isn't as fresh as it should be (their food is made in big cafeteria style batches) and isn't as crisp as I'd like it. This rarely happens (esp. if you come during rush hour) and isn't a big deal. After all, you see the same problems occur at any big chain that serves cafeteria style (Panda Express). 5 stars **Mac n' Cheese, again, at its best its tender, ooey-gooey cheesyness. I've only had it twice. The first time we had it we were served a bottom of the barrel portion. We're talking the last of the last bowl. It was hard, not gooey at all. It tasted like hard, 2nd day microwaved mac n' cheese. Make sure it's fresh b/f you order. 4 stars **Indian taco is pretty darn good. I only ordered it once (they were out of pulled pork). It's made using Indian fry bread and topped with ground beef, onions, beans, tomatoes... the kitchen sink. The best part of this dish is the base. The Indian fry bread is out of this world. This thing is huge too. It's an accomplishment for me to finish and entire one, even w/o sides. 4 stars **Indian fry bread (dessert) is sooo good. Fried to a perfect golden brown, warm, and served with powdered sugar and honey. It's like a giant flat donut or funnel cake w/o the holes. 5 stars **House bbq sauce is delectable and I don't like bbq sauce, nor do I put it on my sandwiches. But this sauce really adds something special. My only problem with this restaurant is the pricing. It is pricey! $50 bucks easy for my husband and I for lunch. Ouch. It's worth it but, I won't be here every day. I feel obligated to address a few "concerns" that other reviews brought up. Why? Well they're not valid points and that just ain't cool. A reviewer was unhappy that the bbq was not "made to order." Maybe I'm stupid but it's impossible to cook bbq to order. To my knowledge bbq'ing and smoking takes hours so unless you'd like to wait 4 hours for your sandwich to be "cooked to order" it's going to be pre-made. But hey, I could be wrong, maybe she knows a way to cook an entire beef brisket in 10 mins. Yes, the order system is laggy when at max capacity however, it's pretty average for a very casual place. Plus it's Tehachapi. There are only a handful of decent places in town and only one that offers senior discounts. If you're going to a bbq joint and you expect sit down service then you're missing the point. On that note, how is plating an issue at a bbq joint? I didn't know bbq was gourmet or even needed to be? I don't care if it looks like a cat ate it and coughed it up if it tastes good. Isn't that the point of food?! Taste. Plating is fine and all, but it isn't necessary or even important in the case of a casual restaurant, as long as the food is good and this food is good.

Fantastic! If you live in or near Tehachapi - or are simply driving through - this is an excellent place to stop for lunch or dinner. Prices are more than fair for the amount of food you get and what you get is nothing short of delicious. We enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich and a beef brisket sandwich along with a couple of beers (of which they have a great selection). The service is outstanding! The staff is friendly and very attentive.

I am a heavy haul truck driver that lives in San Diego and travels throughout the USA. I have a love and passion for good food and have sampled BBQ all over. Hands down there is NO OTHER PLACE I've been to that can hold a candle to this place! I am in Tehachapi quite often to pick up wind generators at the GE plant and I will manipulate my schedule just to do an overnight in Tehachapi so I can eat at Red House. I have now tried everything on the menu and everything is fresh and always consistently full of flavor. My favorite is the BBQ chicken, I don't know how he does it but the skin is like candy and the meat literally melts in your mouth. One night I was there and I spoke with the owner Many, he has so much pride for his food! He took me to show his smoker set up out on the back patio and the passion and pride for good BBQ that he serves poured out of him as we was giving me the tour. He asked me being from San Diego "aren't I a fan of Phill's?" I said yes of course I am, Phill's is good but they have gotten so big that the passion and flavor has suffered, Phill's is still very good and one of my favorites, but you can't compare the two. You can taste the difference between a restaurant that has the passion of serving good food and Red House BBQ exhibits that pride passion in its flavor! Tip get there early because as any place that serves FRESH food they will run out, that is a prime example of a place that ONLY serves FRESH food and not yesterday's left overs!

Really tasty BBQ but you people in Tehachapi already know this because this place was busy and all sold out of their BBQ potatoes that are topped will sorts of stuff. I tried their pulled pork, ribs, red slaw and mac n cheese. All of these were great, I would order them all over again. The ribs fall of the bone and really have a lot of meat, the pulled pork BBQ is the best I've had since moving back from NC and when you put any of the sauces on these it just cranks it up even more. I really get disappointed when side don't measure up to the entres but i was not disappointed here at all. The mac and cheese was cheesy and flavorful and the red slaw was no boring after thought and gave a good contrast to the BBQ. I would love to come back to try there Indian taco which looked amazing top high we all sorts of good stuff. Its like a fried flat bread topped with I don't even know but it looked really good and their BBQ potato. *oh and i loved the teepee sitting areas out back. A great spot to escape the mountain winds while still sitting outside.

Brisket was tender and amazing.mac and cheese was ok by my standards but my little guy said it was the best he has had.the pulled pork sandwich was to die for...omg yum with the red slaw.free drinks before 2pm what?! Awesome. Cute atmosphere for families .on the pricey side but its worth it.i havent bbq like this since my last visit to texas.

If you are in the mood for real American BBQ, this is it, complete with smoker out back and funky decor. The chicken and ribs fell off the bone, the hot sauce was perfect and don't forget to try fried pickles.

What an amazing place. I don't eat meat but my other half does so we decided to give this place a try! Out of this world mac and cheese, delicious bbq sauce, and tons of beers to choose from(in bottles) What sets this place apart is the SERVICE. My gosh, I just wanted to sit and watch the wonderful owners walk from table to table checking on everyone. EVERY employee was wonderful and helpful. Please check them out... Oh ya, my bf said the tri-tip was super tasty!

Great stop on our cross country drive. Really friendly staff and great outdoor area to enjoy the sun, smell of the smokehouse and grab a large table for families and, in our case, for the pup. We tried the ribs, chicken, Mac and cheese, BBQ stuffed baked potato and chili and they were all soooo good. I highly recommend this great little spot!!

Brisket so tender you can eat it with a spoon, and the ribs are incredibly luscious and flavorful. Great view of the railroad, super friendly staff. When in Tehachapi, you must try this place!

You will NOT find food anywhere quite like this joint. Easily the most delicious and original BBQ in the area. Dishes on the menu are unique and so so good! Ambiance is great - sign your name on the wall to commemorate your visit! Teepees and fire pits out back, indoor fountain and pond, memorabilia all over the walls, great beer selection and an awesome staff make this place stand high above all other choices. Best on the menu? Brisket, fry bread, BBQ Baked potato and the Mac n Cheese!!

Freaky big baked baked potato! Food was great and the owner was super nice, but the dude working behind the counter was kind of a jerk when I asked if the Indian taco was made of corn or flour (I've never heard of an Indian taco, and FYI, it's some sort of pie thing, based on what he barked at me...yikes) . Don't let that scare you though, it's good BBQ.

If you are wondering where to eat Tehachapi... Look no further. Their outstanding BBQ was rivaled only by their exceptional service. This was our first time eating here, we enjoyed everything we ordered, and we will stop in again the next time we pass through town!

The food here is soooo good, so good the cast of The Hangover 3 ate here multiple times when they filmed a couple scenes in the area. My boyfriend and I ate good here. It's definitely one of the places to try in Tehachapi.

We stopped here on a long day's drive from Las Vegas back to the Bay Area. My wife and kids were skeptical about stopping in such a remote place, so the expectations were quite high... and we were not disappointed. This is a laid back BBQ place. Very casual with random stuff, license plates, pictures and sayings on the wall. "Beer Garden" outside with picnic tables as well as tables inside. The kids didn't have to sit still and they liked exploring the stuff on the walls. The main thing is that the food was good. I tried the Indian Taco and it's sorta like a taco salad on top of flatbread. It was good but not fully my taste... what was awesome was - Brisket excellent - Pulled Pork good, though you might want to ask them to skip the "Honey sauce" or to put that sauce on the side if that's not your thing. - Cornbread - Ribs - Service was good

Nice little BBQ joint in the historic part of Tehachapi. I had the beef brisket sandwich and mashed taters. Overall, the food was good. The brisket was a tad salty but they give you a lot and it's pretty lean (not fatty). Bonus points for the '80s music. Apparently, eating beef brisket while listening to the Flock of Seagulls is a great combo! Who knew? I love it!!!

I was rather surprised by this place. The pulled pork sandwich with chips was a hefty portion and was pretty good barbecue. They have a pretty decent beer selection too. The staff and the manager were really cool too. They helped me find a local grass-fed beef farm connection for home-order. I'll definitely be visiting Red House when I make it back to the area.

First, I want to thank the nearby Apple Shed for having such crappy breakfast service. It was because of said crappy service that I wound up going to Red House BBQ for breakfast. Yeah, bbq for breakfast. So, thank you Apple Shed for driving me to this nirvana of bbq. Rainy day, just opened, only ones there. Ambience was funky and fun. The staff was funky and fun. Friendly, informative, no problems, no hassles: let's all eat! I have been searching the San Fernando Valley for great bbq for some time now, with hits and misses. This place...oh, this place...if only it were closer. The pork ribs with a dry rub were tender and meaty. The brisket was absolutely heaven. I had thought previously that Tyler's Texas BBQ on Sepulveda Blvd made such precious brisket. This surpassed Tyler's. The sauce was delectable. The chili mac and cheese side was the best I've had in such a long time. Such a long time. Such.... It was cheesy, cheddary, flavorful; it was something my mom would have produced. Lordy! The corn wasn't the small chunk most places serve, but a full ear. The mash potatoes and potato salad were good, but compared to the mac and cheese, they paled. How good was this place? Cleaned my plate...for breakfast. Then ordered another 1/2 family feast meal to take with me. Yep. I'm still eating that food over a week later. The bbq chicken that came with is freakin' amazing, even a day later, two days later, I don't care. The pork ribs St. Louis style (i.e. wet) were making me wet. I was going to save some. I didn't. Too good. Can't stop. The pulled pork makes an awesome sandwich. I would actually give this place a 4 1/2, just because I am very careful about my 5's (unlike some of you out there in Yelp land who apparently feel that if a waiter smiles or you receive correct change, that that's a 5)...but I'm going to go ahead and give this place a 5 because I loved the food and everything about the people who run it. Now, how often can I make that 1 1/2 drive back to Tehachapi???? p.s. They give discounts if you pay in cash!!! p.p.s. I love any bbq place that has rolls of paper towels sitting on the tables. Nothing worse than those places that give you one or two napkins and expect you to make do. This place obviously expects that you will get messy...and I did...and I loved it.

I am NOT a fan of BBQ, but I do love catfish! Had 2 piece catfish, pinto beans, and mashed potatoes. My bf ordered pulled pork with mac n cheese, and the order would not be complete with out ice tea :D My catfish was perfectly cook, they didn't over fry it, it wasn't greasy and the fish tasted clean! Which is hard to get from catfish. Mashed Potatoes were good but i did not like the gravy, too smoky. The pinto beans were my favorite, it had just the right amount of heat, made my tummy warm. I did try the mac n cheese, it was better than most BBQ places, most are a big grease pile but not here, it was creamy.

I always fear going to bar-b-q places in California. sorry they just don't make it like back home in Texas(even the so called "Texas style") but I came across Red House when a family member moved to Tehachapi and we just had to try it. We got there right before they closed and were scared they wouldn't seat us. To our pleasant surprise, they were more than happy to seat us and give us whatever they had. Unfortunately they had run out of a few things, but we got some of the chicken and brisket. I must say I was very impressed with the brisket. Talking to the owner, he talked about his low and slow style, which definitely is the way to cook bar-b-q, and you could taste the yummy juicyness in the meat. It had a nice smokey flavor as well. Additionally, the owners bar-b-q sauce also was good. I love meat that doesn't need a sauce, and this meat doesn't necessarily, but it was a good sauce that adds to the meat, not replaces it. The only negative I could give, is that California prefers the "tri-tip" cut of meat rather than a typical brisket used in Texas. To me it has more of a consistency of what a roast might be, so I could taste that. Going back to the owner and the staff, they were again very accomodating to us, especially since they were about closed, we had a big group and they had to pull stuff back out to serve us. The owner was a great guy and sat and talked to us about his career cooking bar-b-q, and the Tehachapi area. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend it, I will def be back when I'm up there again.

Talked myself into revisiting. Came in for lunch around 2pm on a Saturday. Started out rough. No cornbread, no Flat Bread, only 1 order of Mac n' Cheese left, and only Kansas City Style ribs. Our group of 6 ordered pulled pork, pulled chicken, and some ribs. The pulled pork and pulled chicken were good and I'd go back for a sandwhich but I think the KC ribs are yesterdays ribs simmered in sauce. The ribs still had little flavor other then the sauce. I'll upgrade to 3 stars because the pulled pork sandwich is worth going back for.

We have been eating his BBQ since he was selling it at the farmers markets here in town. Best BBQ in town and anywhere around the area. Friendliest people ever, and very family oriented. If you really want to experience a great lunch or dinner atmosphere this is the place to go. The owner is a real gentle giant.....he always has a smile to share and greet every person that walks in the door.....keep up the great work...The George Family....

Had lunch here today. WOW what a great meal! Brisket and 2 sides - chose the mac n' cheese and the chili beans. Enough for 2 people. Brought half the meat and most of the chili home. Very friendly service. Since it was my first time in, they guided me on how to order and figure out the simple menu. Meat was sliced thickly and very tasty. Chili was very meaty and good. Had a little kick, just right. Mac n' Cheese was really good too. They had a nice selection of bottled beer but I had to work so it was water for me. I will stop back next time through town.

I grew up outside of Kansas City and down south so been to many BBQ places. This one tops up high on my list to go to. I have only been in town for five days now and have been there for the past 2 days since I didn't see it til then. The pulled pork sandwich is awesome and has slaw on top. Chili-Mac is to die for. The Brisket melts right in your mouth. The Mac-n-Cheese is good but I've had better but not going to knock a star for that, it is still good. You can get extra sauce, either regular or spicy. They are tasty but runny for me, I like my sauce thick but then again not going to knock the stars for that since it is still good. The service is excellent. Some might think it is a little too much but better for them to make sure you're alright then never come by for your refill. All in all really good food. I might go broke here. Still many things to try there and come back for.

This place is by far the best place for BBQ in Tehachapi. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because of the prices. We went when they first opened & we remembered getting huge portions of excellent food for the price. However, we returned last night after about a year of not visiting and we were disappointed to find that the portions weren't as big as when they first opened. The portions all fit on a styrofoam plate, you know the size you buy from the Dollar Tree. The food is delicious, but highly overpriced. We will probably wait another year before we eat here again. So if you don't mind paying extra for smaller, then this is a great place!

Had a short notice catering need for a very large group (more than 85 lbs of tri tip!). Mano, the owner, made the whole arrangement very easy. He was flexible and had a great "can do!" attitude. Delivery was on-time, the service was great, and the guests loved the food (tri tip, red cabbage slaw, beans, and rolls). They entertained the guests and cleaned up efficiently too. Overall, it was a great catering experience!

Wow, and I do mean WOW!! What a gem Tehachapi has in Red House BBQ!!! A little expensive but the portions are huge and the Q is right on!! The brisket is smoked for hours and it is sooo succulent and falls apart. The ribs are tender and smoky and awesome. The beans are al dente but good. I like them cooked a little more but the flavor is excellent. They have soups, indian fry bread, pulled pork, everything you want in a smokehouse. The owner is nice and very engaging. Being an Army veteran I must point out the memorial they have set up for the fallen soldiers. Thank you. I will go to this place, take my children to this place and my grandchildren to this place and their children to this place and so on and so on and so on.................

My Texas roots tend to make me very picky about BBQ. Until now, my time in the Antelope Valley has been spent yearning for my trips back to Austin and ordering Rudy's sauce online to help fill the gaps. Enter Red House BBQ. Thank you, fellow Yelpers, for bringing this to my attention during my dinner search on a return trip from Bakersfield. So here's the deal: service is amazing. Amazing. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. Our table was visited no less than five times, and not in that annoying in your face kind of way... But the genuinely paying attention to a lack of iced tea and needing a to go box kind of way. Five stars for service alone. Food was delicious. Apache chili... Great spice. Red cabbage lived up to the Yelp hype. Savory sweet and yummy. Brisket was great. Smoky, melty, and fantastic. The spicy BBQ sauce was good, too. But definitely not required. Hubbs had ribs, pulled pork, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes. He's not picky about food, but was overly satisfied with his whole meal. Food = four and a half stars. Minus one half star for not being in Texas. However, I am looking forward to coming back for native night with buffalo ribs and venison. That could easily earn another half star. If you're in the AV, or passing through Tehachapi, or on the south end of Bakersfield... Red House BBQ is worth going out of your way for a special trip. Portions are huge! Good value... Can't wait to finish my brisket at breakfast tomorrow! Is it morning time yet??

We had some grub here two nights ago and all I can say was yum. The bbq is so tender and moist. The put the perfect amount of heat and sweet in there sauces. Wow ...the kids ate there whole plate (They never do that) Met the owners for a moment and they were kind and very sweet to the kids. The staff was excellent with great service. We will be back...so save some for us.

Been to this restaurant twice. The first time the mac & cheese was good though very greasy so my wife couldn't eat it. The second time I went there the mac & cheese was not good at all. The pulled pork sandwich was lacking in flavor. We also weren't impressed with the chili. If you're in Tehachapi, Whistle Stop is your best bet for BBQ but you can't eat inside.

OMG!!!!!!!!! This is the best BBQ I have ever had! I lived in Texas for a year and a half and nothing came close to the quality of BBQ that is served here. The Mac&Cheese is to die for! I had the Memphis pulled pork and it was so good!

Just thinking about this place makes my mouth water! My best friend and her husband flew in from Colorado and I knew the best place to take them to lunch......Red House BBQ. The food is fantabulous! The people working there are very nice and make you feel right at home. You get what you pay for......nice portions, lots of flavor, friendly service and a full belly. Their smoked sausage and brisket are to die for! Their soups and chili are so good, the only way to discribe the flavor is ....mmmmmm!! As the wife and mother of U.S. Army paratroopers, my heart felt very happy seeing how Red House BBQ honors our men and women in uniform. They have a nice display of photographs of service members and a table dedicated just to our fallen heros. That to me speaks highly of this establishment and earned my respect before I even sat down to eat their amazing food. My hats off to all of them. I have recommended this place to everyone I know and I look forward to returning for another wonderful meal.

Eat here three times a week at least. 90% of the time it's their cobb salad with chicken or brisket. Every now and then I get a little primal and just have a pound of brisket or pulled pork. It's not the cheapest place in town, however in terms of value (quality, quantity, and service) I believe it may be the best value in town. Staff is very friendly. The owner is a gigantic dude, can be a bit intimidating, but talk him up, you'll find he's very friendly and will stop what he's doing to talk.

This review is based soley on an event that was catered by Red House BBQ. Attended a wedding up at Tehachapi Mountain park this weekend, what a cool place to camp. I was excited to find out Red House was catering the event as I was aware of the place, just hadn't made it up the hill to eat there. The brisket was FANTASTIC. Dont have alot of oportunity to get brisket out here on the west coast. I talked to the owner at the event and I got the impression that he may not have brisket available in the restaruant on the reg, don't quote me on that. If you have the chance to get the brisket, it is a must. The baked mac and cheese was, yes, Im going to say it, LEGIT. I had to get a 2nd helping of it. The salad, beans, and rolls (was told that was the only item they didn't prepare from scratch) where all good. The pulled pork was good, not drowned in BBQ like you find at so many places that call themselves a BBQ joint. If the ladies working the event are the same ladies that work in the restaurant, I would say the service would be good, they were very friendly. Cant wait to make a trip up the hill to try more items from their menu.

I stopped in here with my family for lunch while on a road trip. This is a great place with tons of local flavor. The food was delicious! Three of us had the Indian Taco, which really hit the spot. My boyfriend's ribs were also very tasty and were laid over the best home-made potato chips I have ever had. The corn bread was also awesome. The staff is very friendly, the decor is quirky and fun, and the prices match the servings very well. I was disappointed it was too cold to eat outside in one of the teepees in the back! Looks like this would be a great place for dinner or on a weekend night. If you're traveling along Highway 58, this place is a must stop for lunch or dinner!

My husband and I went here for a date night. It was great. Service was great. We had ribs and they were the best we have ever had. They had a great taste on their own, the bbq sauce .. well they gave us 2 different kinds and they both had an amazing flavor. We got the potato salad.. well i'm normally not much for potato salad.. this one i loved. The texture was nice and tasty. there was no mayo taste.. that part i love. This is a must go to. The have indoor and outdoor seating, BBQ pit. We will be returning.

Really good BBQ! We ordered 1/2 rack of ribs and a large pulled pork sandwich with 3 sides - Mac n cheese, red slaw, and cornbread. The pulled pork was AMAZING! Tender and moist and juicy. The husband got mad when I had the last bites, even when he ate half of it. I almost regret not ordering another one to go. The sides are great too although I didn't care much for the cornbread as it was a bit on the dry side. The hot BBQ sauce they serve on the side is also pretty good. Return factor is 100%. Service alone is worth every star as they checked on us 5 times. Worth the stop if you're passing through the area.

YUM! This place is great I've had just about everything on the menu and loved it all. The rub they put on the ribs is GREAT and they are super tender! The Brisket is amazing and if you can pass up the BBQ you must Try an Indian Taco. The Indian Taco is a long time Tehachapi favrite, so good and more that you can eat! This place might cost a bit more that a fast food stop but worth evey penny! A Tehachapi must try!

I would like to comment about the management styles regarding this restaurant. I am highly disappointed to overhear the public mentioning how management is run. Word spreads like crazy in Tehachapi. Im in this city a lot, and each time i'm here, i hear something new. Now as far as the food...i had a pulled pork sandwich for lunch, and that ran me out. I will NEVER have that again. Seriously, how can you mess that up? I thought this place would be the BEST place to go in Tehachapi. I was proven wrong.

BBQ pork so juicy you don't even need sauce. You can bring your leashed dog to eat on the patio. Fry bread taco is really good. House salad dressing is delicious!

This place has very good food. The ribs are always fresh out if the smoker and moist and tasty. The sandwiches are big and fresh. Many different items on the menu, the huge pork chop looks very good. The place is always busy because the food is good and not because it is the only BBQ place in Tehachapi.

husband and I went here after seeing this place mentioned on a friend's facebook...right away you are met with a happy and genuinely friendly staff, which is a good start to any dining experience! we both ordered the pulled pork sandwiches, with a side of corn on the cob, and indian fry bread...wow, the pork was so delicious and tender, and a hearty portion as well...the fry bread was so good, puffy and crispy around the edges, and with honey poured over it, was a treat! .. Where on earth do they get those HUGE beautiful ears of corn?? was expecting the little anemic chunks you usually get at Q places, and was blown away by these huge mutant ears, almost too much to eat! much to my disappointment, they were out of mac n cheese.....but, after touring through tehachapi and watching a few trains, we decided to come back for the half meal to take home for dinner....much to my happiness, they had just made a fresh batch...well let me tell you, that is without a doubt, the best 'crack n cheese' I have ever eaten! after getting home and eating our tender and delicious brisket dinner, all my mind could concentrate on was the leftover cheesy goodness in the fridge...you guessed it, before the evening ended, it was gone... cover and reheat it low and slow in the micro, with a small splash of milk, and it will be revived to all it's addicting glory.... Red House is a great place for excellent BBQ, the best mac n cheese ever created, friendly staff, funky decor, and tepee dining out back which is fun for the kids...be sure to give this a try, it IS worth the drive up the mountain!

Delicious BBQ!!! I am not always the biggest fan of BBQ but this place was amazing!! We had pulled pork sandwiches, mac and cheese, and the chili. The buns for the sandwiches were okay...tastes better without the bun. The chili is pretty spicy but good. The mac and cheese was fabulous! Would definitely return for more BBQ!

Debbie and I have been coming up here since shortly after they opened. We have tried most of the menu items but keep coming back to their ribs. We usually get the full rack with 2 sides. We have tried most of the sides at one time or another. This time its the mac & cheese and a new one for us. Fried pickles. We have had the pickles in other places mostly Hooters. Red House starts out with pickle spears instead if chips and batters them in a light batter then deep fries them. They are good but the only comment I would have on them is the batter could use a bit of seasoning. The mac & cheese is creamy and very good with a good flavor. As for the ribs what can I say that hasn't already been said. They use St Louis style ribs with a dry rub then put them in the smoker to get happy. They have a nice smoke ring and great flavor. They serve them with either mild or spicy sauce. They have a nice pull off the bone and come off clean. If you haven't tried this place and are close or coming through the area you need to stop in and say hi and enjoy some good Q.

You are gonna be hard pressed to find better BBQ in California. I travel a lot and have tried a lot. I know there are a ton of reviews on this place already, but I got a yelp account so I can come on this page and say that this place rocks. Not just the food, but the courteous friendly helpful staff and the fun clean interior is great. They respect elders and our lost brothers and sisters. They give deals for cash paying customers and treat people WELL. This place is fantastic and a MUST STOP when in Tehachapi, which lucky for me is quite often. Don't stop rocking!

Tried this place for the first time today. Great atmosphere and terrific service. Had the fried catfish and it was delicious. The Indian fry bread was great too. Sampled some of the food my companions had ordered and the BBQ was good too. Will drive up from Bakersfield again for such great food and service. Thank you!

Ok, I went back and had the brisket and sides. The portion was much better at dinner and I literally inhaled the whole plate within a few minutes. I guess that says a lot, but that won't do justice for this place. So, I'll be a little more descriptive. The brisket was so tender and melt in your mouth from start to finish. And for the people who like to dip, the spicy bbq sauce was the icing on the cake. It just compliments the tender brisket so well. Oh, I can't leave out the sides either. The mix greens was very flavorful and had a bit of a chili kick to it. Ok, here's the bad, so, so jambalaya! Missin' the shrimp. Almost forgot, the service there has always been excellent and not overbearing. The end!

Wow. I've tasted the Red House Indian tacos at the events up here before and always liked them, but nothing compares to his new restaurant. What a gem! We have been there a couple of times since they opened and this food is wonderful. I get the beef (maybe tri-tip?) sandwich dinner... $8.95 came with one side dish. It was huge, with enough food to feed 2 people easily. Lots and lots of meat, so much so, that I had to eat it with a fork open-faced! it was slow cooked, tender bbq that was delicious without any sauce, not overly salty to mask the flavors like a lot of places do... it was just seasoned to perfection. Large homemade bakery-style bun. I added his homemade sauces just to try all the varieties... sweet, tangy, spicy, original. My companion tried the pulled pork sandwich dinner (I think it was $7.95 w/one or two sides - I forgot) and loved it, as well. The mac and cheese side dish is wonderful. I had a beans side the first time, it was good too. Lots of people were eating the red cole slaw side. He has racks of ribs that he will sell as a dinner plate, or whole to take home. Also on the menu were his famous Indian tacos which have a following up in this area. This owner is known for his delicious food and great service. Both times we visited the place was quite full but service was speedy and friendly. Cute little atmosphere to the place... outdoorsy feel to the interior dining and there is a patio for outdoor eating, as well. On our last trip he took us out to view the massive smoker and it was neat to see all those meats that he cooks for many many hours just to perfection. The owner truly seems like he just loves to bbq and wants people to love his cooking... and he's fair on prices. He radiates when he sees people enjoying their meals... like a proud papa! lol. Good job on opening this place I hope you stay in business a long time so that we may enjoy your gift for Q'ing.

Love this place! We just moved to Tehachapi from Texas (where there is pretty good BBQ) and we really enjoy the food at Red House. I try to order something new every time I go and have not been disappointed yet. I especially love the chili; it has the right amount of spice and loaded with pulled pork. A favorite eating spot in Tehachapi.

Our motorcycle group had lunch here after a chilly January 14th ride from Glendale. The service and food were excellent. Another customer who was picking up his food to go told us to try the beef brisket. He said it was the best he has ever had. We tried the brisket sandwich and the special 4 ribs and 2 sides. Our whole group of 12 were impressed by the quality of the food for such a low price. We will definitely be back.

This place is a nice, clean, BBQ place. The service, owners/employees are courteous, especially to those in the military. They have a Native American theme. Very tasty BBQ that doesn't even need the sauce!

  • Diana D.

The Chef is Native American and studied in Japan. This alone made me want to try Red House. Seems like a lot of people did. It is in a spot where a very good health food place used to be. I miss that joint, but I suppose good BBQ is just as good. There is a back patio with three tee-pees and a lot of picknic tables. You can go gawk at the huge smoker back there. Dogs are welcome. I hate to say this, but the order system is not too hot. You go, stand in line, and order at the register to get a number so your food can be brought. The people at the register are slow and scattered, and the line creeps. Then you have to wait for the food to be served up (it's BBQ, they "assemble" rather than cook to order) and then wait for the server to wander around, looking for your number on your table. Here, a good fix: have a menu up and take orders as soon as customers come in. Then pass the customer their number, and then start on the food right away. With proper training, the staff can pretty much have food ready by the time the customer gets to the register to pay. The register team only takes payent, the order taker only takes orders, the food assemblers assemble, the cooks cook. Things move quicker. Even better, train the staff to take orders from the table, and your customers get to sit down and relax. I ordered the fry bread taco, which comes with ground beef, lettuce, onion, beans, and sour cream. I replaced the ground beef with pulled pork (extra buck fifty) and it was faboo. Juicy, porky, with a wonderful fry bread. Rather huge, too. I also ordered a side of pasta salad and mac n cheese. both were good. My husband had the brisket, the red slaw and the chili mac. The chili mac was too dry and not gooey enough, but tasty. The red slaw was amazing. The brisket had good flavor, but was too dry, and overcooked. House sauce is darn good. We ordered another piece of Fry bread for dessert. The server looked confused, because I didn't go stand in line to order it, and I guess that little "twist" threw her. She took my money (i told her to keep the change) and came back 10 minutes later to tell me it was "coming". 15 minutes after that, I wandered in to see what was up. She told me it was "in the fryer". Uh huh.. The chef/owner (you can tell, it isn't so much a bear claw he sports as a bear toe. I think he might have taken down the bear himself!) brought a piece right over as soon as he saw me. He's a good guy, better at service than his staff (who are all pretty young and just need experience and to think a little more). I asked for honey, and the yong gir put about two teaspoons in a teeny palstic sauce cup. I said "could you fill it up, please, this is a good sized peice of fry bread!" She stoped to let the cogs spin a bit, and then looked at the bread. The cup, the bread. It clicked, and she filled it up. Ill tell you, that fry bread (which has whole wheat flour in it for flavor and yumminess) is damn fine stuff. One thing surprised me. The chef studied in Japan, and I sorta thought that maybe this would have and impact on his plating. Not really. But then he didn't plate every dish. Also, I thought there might be more fish on the menu. cant remember ANY fish, to tell the truth. Bring some of that Japanese training in, train the staff, fix the ordering slowness, and watch the smoker temperature for the brisket (or take it off earlier and let it sit more) and that will be a kick ass cali BBQ spot.

This place has got to be directly out of a Food Network show. I half imagined Guy Fieri hanging out at this joint...but the characters that do work here are NOT a disappointment. The girls working the front register were full of their own personality and great "eye candy" for the guys. I can't complain because they gave me great service from the minute we walked in to the moment we left. The guy and girls working in the back never stopped the whole time we were there, and I must say they serve up a plate of absolute PERFECTION!!! The menu was more than reasonable in pricing and the portions were on the heavy side. I had the ribs, brisket, mac 'n' cheese, and without shame the mashed potatoes and gravy. OINK OINK!!! The dry rub on the ribs was perfectly proportioned (not overdone and not underdone) and made the meat....which by the way...fell off the bone with every bite. The brisket was so tender and just enough bbq sauce covered each bite. Now, if you follow my reviews, you must know that I am particular with my mac 'n' cheese....they did not disappoint...cheesy not greasy, creamy not clumpy, cooked to perfection not dry, and just the perfect golden brown bake on top. The mashed potatoes did not need the dark brown gravy of deliciousness, as it carried it's own. And the truth is that I don't even like mashed potatoes...but I couldn't decide on my second side and I happened along the mashed potatoes and they were excellent. The decor and design is indescribable...Native Americana meets Roadside Diner meets WWII. The outdoor tables and teepees just blew my mind. I can probably hang out here for hours....unfortunately, I understand that there are others that must enjoy this oasis of culinary yummyness. It is a MUST try...no matter where you are...it is worth the drive.

Wow! This is good BBQ! We were hesitant about trying it. We had a few people who were waiting for us to be the guinea pigs to try it before they did. Well, if you don't try it, you're a fool! The honey got the 1/2 rack of ribs with the red slaw and mac n' cheese and I got the ribs and pulled meat combo, I choose the brisket as my pulled meat choice, with the same sides. The ribs are ridiculously delicious! Oh man! The sauces are fantastic as well! The brisket was a little dry but very flavorful, add a little BBQ sauce and dryness was not an issue. The red slaw is fabulous! And the mac n' cheese, oh boy oh boy, talk about a party in your mouth! It's super creamy and pure deliciousness! It amazes me how many people can screw up mac n' cheese but with them it's definitely not their issue! We also ordered a couple local brews called "Lobotomy Bock", which was recommended by the girls at the counter and we were not disappointed! Very good beer! The owner told us that they're having a beer show on June 18th, same weekend as the chili cook off. We'll be making a day of it and attend both events. If you haven't tried it yet, GO! It's worth it! So, So good! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for the dry brisket. Looking forward to going back and trying everything else on the menu!

I'd been trying to get to this place for months, mostly because I live nowhere near Tehachapi and I'd had three separate people from Los Angeles tell me it was the best BBQ they'd ever tasted. So when I did a trip to the High Sierras a few weeks ago I actually rerouted on the way home to make sure I could swing by Red House and check it out. Holy crap, this place was good. The best BBQ I've ever had? That's a tall order but... yes, I'd say that's an accurate assessment. And no, I'm not exaggerating. I really love BBQ, especially ribs, and I fancy myself a sort of armchair connoisseur. I've found that good BBQ places pop up in the strangest places, like surf-centric San Clemente (Rib Trader) or, in this case, a sleepy, out-of-the-way little berg like Tehachapi. I reviewed Rib Trader a while back, but I haven't reviewed any other BBQ places because I haven't found a place that was anywhere near as good. Well... Red House is better. Maybe the distance is part of the allure for me, but It also places an unfair burden on the establishment: since it really does take a bit of effort for me to get to a place like Tehachapi, I tend to be hyper-critical of the food. If I drive that far, I want something extraordinary. I expect the world on a platter. I'm happy to say, that's pretty much what I got from Red House BBQ. The most delicious pork ribs I've tasted, period. The meat melted like butter in my mouth. I was so into it, I swear to Zeus, I forgot to put sauce on them. Then, when I remembered the sauce, it was like a whole new dish. It was stunning. I'll just leave it at that. The sides were great too--especially the mac and cheese (never thought I'd be raving about mac and cheese, but there you have it). The service was also top notch - very cool people. But I'm sure other reviews talk about all that stuff, including the marvelously unpretentious atmosphere and the awesome teepees (the owner is part American Indian) but I find myself thinking of the same thing over and over when the subject of Red House BBQ crosses my mind. Those damned ribs. Man, were they frickin' good. I don't care where you live: those ribs are worth the drive. Unless you live on the East Coast or something, in which case...fly in. You'll thank me.

I love this place! I don't usually eat pork but they have the best pulled pork sandwich in the area. My son LOVES the mashed potatoes, which has bits of smoked pork in it as well as the gravy...Yum!!!! There are only 2 places we will eat BBQ in ALL of California and Red House is one of them!!! Must try....very welcoming and the more you go and eat there, they begin to recognize you and I love that about restaurants!!!

been here twice. once while passing through (bako to san diego) and then brought wife, two kids and aunt (who lives in tahachapi) here because of first experience. SUPER friendly staff each time.Lots-o-people line up for lunch but still found a table both times. Food is good (had dry rub ribs, potato salad, beans, red cole slaw, cornbread and pulled pork sandwich between all of us) Negative came second time when we ordered dry rub and were told (at lunch time) they were out and would have to go wet. Makes for a messy time with kids and I prefer dry. All in all a great find in a town off of the beaten path. Both times listened to the Doors (THEY AREN"T THAT GREAT) mix up the tunes.

On the long drive across the desert from Bakersfield to Barstow (en route to Vegas), Tehachapi was once a foodie wasteland. Not any more! This Native American-owned barbecue house is phenomenal. I've tasted BBQ from my hometown of Chicago, all across the South and Midwest, in the hill country of Texas and beyond. But this is the real deal, and the good homecooked stuff really measures up. Order at the counter, then take a seat and wait oh, two minutes for your food to be delivered to your table. The mac 'n cheese was seriously heart-warming, and oh, that damn succulent brisket. The table kept open at the back as a photo memorial to military vets, with a fresh plate of food set on the table to appease hungry ghosts, was a nice touch.

A cool little joint out in the middle of the mountains. I'd read a bunch of reviews about how good the BBQ was so I went up there for that. I was happily surprised to find a decent craft local beer selection too. Had a Kern Just Outstanding IPA bomber on special for 4.50. Yep that's not a misprint. I can't even get it that cheap at the Kern river brewery. Also had Lagunitas, Stone, Bear republic, Paulaner, Uinta, Mission and others. Service was insanely friendly. Pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese, and potato salad was great. Pull up and you can smell the goodness. I'll be back.

Awesome! We flew into the little airport across the way and needed a place within walking distance. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ houses but it got good reviews, was close, and hubby likes his meat. Well it was delicious!!! They make a specialty chili that you must try!!!! I tried to get the recipe from the cook since I live so far from Tehachapi, but he (also the owner) resisted stating it was his chili cookoff trophy winner. Ok I'll have to fly back into town again. Haha signed my name on the signature wall on the way out.

I've been disappointed so many times. Someone will say they had "great bbq," and like a fool I try it and leave in dismay. Isn't there anyone who really knows what bbq is supposed to be? No, it is not a tri-tip sandwich with Santa Maria beans - ugh. When I read the reviews for Red House, I feared another letdown, but my optimism prevailed and we gave it a try. So Happy! We had the "small" brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. The brisket was so smokey, tender and flavorful - it was a beautiful thing. The pulled pork actually tasted like deep pit and didn't have such a smokey element, but you could really taste the juices in the meat. My husband is not a fan of slaw or honey mustard bbq sauce so had his plain, but I'll bet it's a great addition to this sandwich. The spicy bbq sauce was great - spicy and flavorful without overpowering the meat. It was so good I knew we had to take an order of brisket home to our son and he devoured it. I was disappointed there was no mac & cheese on the day we went - they opted to make chili-mac that day. Still, I do like that they change things up and are willing to go with what they're feeling on that day. My side of potato salad was fine, but my husband's side of white beans was fantastic. Perfect texture and lots of smokey ham. I saw rib and chicken platters that looked wonderful so we will definitely try those when we are ready to eat a full meal. It's order at the counter but as soon as you walk in they're asking if you've been in before and helping you figure out your order. They had a little rush while we were there but never let things get backed up. The owner and staff were out on the floor making sure everyone was happy. You must absolutely try this place.

I have to update my review and upgrade the rating, I now LOVE this place. We walked in last night and they remembered me from last month! Wow! I mean, hundreds of people come through this place every day! Anyway, flattery is not what made me love them more... It's Native Day when they have wild game on the first Saturday of the month! I had boar ribs and pheasant sausage with field rice and the best corn on the cob in recent history. Amazing. I also learned that I missed elk, and buffalo ribs that they had run out earlier in the day. Anyway, the staff and food are still the best and I am amazed at how this restaurant has seized the hearts of locals and travelers alike in less than a year. I also confirmed that the potato salad has some addictive substance in it... I think I licked the bowl. I can't wait to go back. Thanks, Red House!!

Yelp's relentless email re-marketing machine got me finally so here's my belated review. Great food. Ribs, brisket, great sides. The bbq chicken was so so. Plan on eating this one meal for the day, and then carrot sticks for the other 2 meals. Native american memorabilia everywhere including a giant teepee out back for those who want to dine outdoors. Stop here if you drive by Bakersfield, may be en route to Las Vegas. Would have never ever seen this had it not been for magical Yelp. thank u team Yelp

I am always in the mood for good babrbecue.Read the reviews on this place and decided to stop in to check it out. Loud music forced me outside to start things off. Then I was told they were out of their famous Mac and cheese (at 5 pm on a Friday?) and my bottle of the local beer was flat. Fortunately, some decent ribs came out soon, the wet St. Louis version was moist and tender, the dry rub had just the right amount of chew. The pulled pork was plentiful and their spicy sauce was good. The meat just wasn't awesome or smoky enough to remind me of Memphis. The red slaw had too much wine vinegar to it and the chips were salty. Overall, it was just slightly better than ok. Next time I am driving through T town maybe I will try the Indian Fry bread instead. Folks were digging theirs all around me.

Selected this place based on the Yelp Rating. Glad we came here. We got there near closing but the staff was very helpful and attentive. Liked the staff. We ordered quite a few things: Brisket, Pulled Pork, Corn on the Cob, Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese and Indian Fry Bread. The brisket was so tender and flavorful, will definitely order it again. The pulled pork had a sauce on top that I didn't care for but the the pork was also very good. The corn on the cob was fresh and cooked perfectly. If I recommend the mashed potatoes I'd say leave the gravy off, it was a bit to tangy. The macaroni and cheese - absolutely delicious. Never had the Indian fry bread before and probably wouldn't order it again. If you pay with cash you get a discount, if you stay at the Best Western they have a coupon for additional discounts. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for really good BBQ if they're passing through TTehachapi, CA.

Amazing. I was sad when my food was gone. I asked my husband if I could order a side of mashed potatoes so I could eat them in the car. We ate there at about 3:00 p.m. and I wasn't hungry again until 8:00 p.m. which is great when you're traveling. They were out if mac n cheese which was a bummer because that's what my kids were asking for but the food is so good it's still a 5 star rating. I'm sorry Salinas City BBQ....this place has the bomb pulled pork sandwich. If they served it on a garlic roll instead of a plain hamburger bun I think my head would have exploded from the awesomeness. Being as this place is a good 5 hours away from my home base I am pretty sad that I won't be eating there again anytime soon but if you are in Tehachapi and reading this looking for good eats...please stop there and eat something!

Great!! I'm not a huge BBQ fan but I decided to try this place anyways, because it had such great reviews, and I was NOT disappointed!! Told my coworkers who all eat here now as well. You can't go wrong here!

Went there today. Its ok dont get me wrong its just, well, unexciting. The indian tacos were supurb untill about the fifth bite, then they just lost there lust..... Easily the best part here is the atmosphere. If your obsessed with bbq then this is your place. But other than that, ive had better.

Pretty decent bbq. Not the best I have ever had, but for a town this size it's good. Actually the meat and sides are good, it's the bbq sauce that is only so-so. The sandwiches are huge and good. I have had the ribs which had good taste but more of dry rib and not the "fall off the bone", drenched in bbq sauce like you will often find. Definitely worth a try....opinions among locals ranges from great to good. Haven't talked to anyone that didn't give it a passing grade.

This was really good! Very friendly people there who checked on us all the time. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. Atmosphere is great for down-home bbq. Loved the mac & cheese. Hubby loved the red slaw, ribs, and briskit. I loved my pork sandwich, although the bread was rather soggy by the end. Good sized portions and fair prices. Will definitely return.

We just discovered this wonderful BBQ place. It was a great surprise! Not only are their BBQ meats totally delicious (we tried the chicken, brisket and pulled pork), their sides are also amazing! I loved their chili. It was like homemade. Definitely recommended.

First of all I need to tell you I am not the biggest BBQ eater...but because my wife loves it I try the different places. First of all the environment was nice. It had a Indian theme, military theme, and an outdoors feel. So we walked to the place and was greeted by everyone there. Then of course because of it being in a small town they knew right a way that it was out first time there. Then we ordered our food. Man I swear this was the best BBQ I have ever had...Champs has nothing on them. First of all the brisket was so flavorful and tender you could cut it with a spoon. Then we also had the ribs...not the messy kind but dry rub. By the time you took a bite it already fell off the bone. Then you get two sides...the Mac and cheese was the best restaurant food we ever had... The other is hard to choose because there is so much to choose from. The service there was very good and helpful. Please go and try this place out. Tehachapi!!!!

I've been here three times, unfortunately one was a Tuesday, during which they were closed (major bummer). The two times I ate there, I tried pulled pork (with their honey mustard sauce) with greens and sweet tea and pulled chicken with mac n cheese and a side salad (blue cheese dressing was delish). My bf had pulled pork with the chili from the chili bar. We also tried both mild and spicy bbq sauce. The food was great, not AMAZING, but great. They make everything on site, fresh, every day, so they do run out of some things. They were out of many items my first experience so couldn't order what I really wanted, but what I got was great and I have no regrets. The ambience is fun but the serving style is a little sloppy. You order at the cashier and pay (3% discount if you pay cash), and they bring your food to you. There's a good selection of bottled beer and a few options for wine. This place is just a quick walk from my place so I will definitely become a regular. The prices are good, but not really cheap, so I'll have to limit myself to once every other week or so. I definitely recommend it if you enjoy bbq!! Oh, and the staff is mostly young, vibrant and friendly, and I'm excited to experience Red House in the summer months when the patio is open and bands play!

My family and I love this place, but as a family of 6 it is very expensive, hence the 4 stars. However, The food is fresh, well seasoned, and lovingly prepared. My hubby and I both love the ribs, sweet tea, and chili mac. My kids go crazy for the mac n cheese and fry bread with powered sugar. I am not sure if they still have it on the menu, but the pepper steak soup was amazing. The owners wife is such a sweetheart and treated us so kindly. I appreciate good service almost as much as good food.Side note.. I understand the sentiment of hiring young kids, but they are NOT doing this place any justice. They don't seem to know the menu well, are not very genuine or helpful. I don't want to have to ask for something repeatedly, and when I do ask I don't want to feel as if I am asking for the moon and stars. A smile and a thank you goes a long way. I adore this place and the owners and will continue to frequent this establishment. My only request is that you train your current employees to treat us customers with respect, and remind them that we are always right, and while you may provide the bread, we (customers) butter it ;) Also, consider lowering the prices or offering lower cost options. And please consider giving the chili mac a permanent spot on the everyday menu. I am contemplating submitting this place to Diners,Drive Ins and Dives, but don't want it to get even more crowded. However, I think the food is worthy, as are the owners, so I shall tempt Guy with promises of Chili Mac and Fry bread. I encourage you to do the same ;)

Stopped in on our road trip from san Francisco to las Vegas. We were greeted promptly, and ordered with little delay. My father and I both ordered the brisket sandwich with a side red slaw and corn. The slaw was tasty and tangy but not at all creamy. The corn was sweet and cooked well. The brisket was well seasoned and flavorful, but mine was slightly too fatty. Overall, definitely worth stopping for and we would almost certainly return.

I went with my husband up to Tehachapi for business last weekend. Our customers suggested we eat at Red House BBQ. They said they go a couple times a week so I figured it must be good. Oh man! This is a bold statement but I will say.......this was absolutely the BEST BBQ I have ever had in my life and my husband agreed! We are from Santa Clarita so its a bit of a drive for us but my husband and I are already discussing going back up this weekend! I had the Pulled Pork Sandwhich with Red Slaw and Beans on the side. My husband had what looked like a combo plate (ribs, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and beans on the side). That sandwhich.....I can't stop thinking about it! One of the best things I have ever eaten! Meat was moist, soft bread, not overdone with sauce.....ahhh so good! We will definately be back! Met the owner and he was extremely nice and so was the cashier/server. Yes she was young (based on another post) but she was extremely nice and hospitable. Too bad there is only one I know of and its so far! Seriously, the owner should consider opening up a second location down here in Santa Clarita! He would make a killing! Would give 10 Stars if I could. LOVE IT!

I've been across the country and eaten a lot of bbq. Red house is among the best. Had the ribs, which were slow cooked in a smoker = good eats. The Indian taco was excellent also. Staff was friendly and the music was fun. It was nice to be able to educate my kids with a little native education from their questions about the decor.

Great place. We just ate at the Red House for the first time.. Kids loved it as did the adults. Great atmosphere, pulled-pork was cooked perfectly, and the staff was really friendly and helpful. Our kids enjoyed their sandwiches but just loved the mac-n-cheese!

Really fun BBQ joint where you can write on the wall with markers and get served your finger-lickin' ribs inside, out back, or in an honest-to-goodness teepee (housing a large round table, a flourescent flashlight hanging from the smoke hole, and a roll of paper towels). My BBQ ribs were very flavorful but not fall-off-the-bone tender as I've had elsewhere. The sauces (regular and spicy) were both outstanding--very smokey and rich. The mac-and-cheese side was wholesome but a bit bland. The red slaw was unusual and outstanding--a cabbage and beet juice concoction that tasted slightly pickled, slightly acidic, and slightly sweet. It worked. My husband loved his pulled pork sandwich but found the potato salad so-so. Service was friendly and fast. Atmosphere was casual and fun. I'll definitely be back for more. I want to try those Indian tacos, but they were out of fry bread by the time we arrived.

UPDATE! Ever since I wrote my first review on RED HOUSE BBQ, I try to drive up to Tehachapi on weekends and eat at RED HOUSE every chance I get. I always eat here every time I go up to visit a buddy of mine who lives in Tehachapi. For instance,...........I've got to pick up a part that's in stock at the Home Depot in Tehachapi tomorrow morning,.....and guess where I'm going to eat lunch??? Yup,.........RHBBQ! In the past, I used to never ever order ribs at any restaurant because they usually were too tough or hardly had any meat on them. Always thought that they were a waste of money for the amount of meat that you got on ribs. But I've got to say that the dry-rubbed pork ribs at RHBBQ have made a convert out of me. Their dry-rub pork ribs are like manna from heaven! That's usually the only meat that I order when I'm there. And their chili is the meatiest that I've ever had (except for mine) and has got a great just right extra spicy flavor to it. Love the mac & cheese and the potato salad too. If I can't make it to RHBBQ for lunch to get some dry-rub ribs before they run out, then I'll call up Mano and ask him what time he's pulling out the next batch of dry-rub ribs out of the smoker, which is usually around 4:00 PM or so. Then I will literally plan my afternoon trip to put me in Tehachapi at RHBBQ right around the time that the dry-rub ribs are coming out. If the wife isn't home when I leave then she gets ditched and misses out. Besides, she eats "healthy" food like salads, tree bark, etc. Not a big BBQ eater. And when Mano comes around to the tables, asking people how the food is, I usually tell him that his food is "definitely worth the drive" and that "it's manna from heaven",.................if my mouth isn't full of BBQ when he asks. If it is,......then I give him a nod and a thumbs up. Hey Mano, keep up the excellent & delicious BBQ!

We got the half family meal and plenty of food for a family of five. Great flavor on the meat and sauces. Love the walls and tee pees in the back. Kids had a great time. Unique and worth the stop if you are going through the town. Proprietor is very friendly and helpful. Great customer service.

Service was amazing. Decor is awesome. I had the ribs, and they were okay. Corn on the Cobb wasn't very good. Potato wedges were AMAZING. Hubs ordered pulled pork and it was pretty darn salty. The BBQ sauce tasted almost like syrup. Not overly impressed, but fully enjoyed the atmosphere and amazing hospitality.

My husband and I went because we heard they had good Frybread,, well, that was just the start of an amazing meal.. I ordered the cat fish and was thrilled by the freshness and taste. My husband had a loaded fry bread and other than mine, this was the very best we had ever eaten.. this is a place we will return to again and again..

This town is a great stop on 58, great food and even good shops. Red House is exceptional in comfort food. I had the ribs, brisket and pulled pork, ALL tender and each with its own distinct flavor. I loved the ribs even without the extra bbq, prefer dry ribs anyway. It wasn't busy til I sat for a bit and it picked up. The staff was very friendly and cute as can be. Only when I left did I notice the tepees in the back. Probably where the magic happens lol! Give this place a try! Vegans beware!

One of the best BBQ restaurants I have been too. I compares to BBQ I have eaten in Lousiana, Georgia, Texas and Oklahoma. As far as in Tehachapi there is nothing like it. This unique restaurant has taken BBQ and turned it into a fine country meal--such items as Catfish PoBoy, ribs with honey bourbon BBQ sauce, Indian frybread, indian taco and brisket sandwich. The decor is unique as well. Pictures of many fine veterans, some who have lost their lives, places to write your name on the wall; although not many places left, Indian and county-type wall orniments--long horn cattle horns, swords and pictchforks.

I usually love eating there but the last few times I've gone it hasn't been very great experience.. they never seem to have the side you want which is usually potato salad or regular macaroni and cheese,, but the last time I went. we ordered ribs that looked like they were reheated up. Was thin and dryer up meat. Then to top it off, my daughter and I ate the barbecue chicken and got sick from the chicken being very very to smokie . I'm sad I loved that place.. I didn't get sick from bad food . Overly smoky food

Wow, this place ROCKS!!! Only problem I had was I couldn't fit anymore food in my mouth. The red slaw, fried pickles and brisket is to die for. I WILL be back, even though it's 3 1/2 hours from home!!!

This is a hole in the wall located just south of 58 in Tehachapi! The BBQ, ribs and brisket are the best! Great meat that is slow smoked!

This place is going down hill fast. Maybe its due to all the kids working here. I got a pulled pork sandwich the pork was okay the bun was ice cold, zero attempt to warm it. My side was potato salad, it tasted like a cold mashed potato no flavor. Won't be coming back. Use to be a regular stop not anymore.

This place is GREAT! One of our favorites! The best BBQ you will ever have and it's really fun to hang out. From the moment you hit the parking lot and smell the BBQ roaring out in their "shed" you know it's going to be great. The staff is so friendly and it's like coming into a person's home for lunch or dinner. The owner is ALWAYS greeting the customers and refilling your drinks...the whole staff is great. I love all their meals but my three favorites are Brisket, TriTip, and you have to try their Catfish...I love catfish and this is the best you'll ever have. Plus...remember to "sign" your name on their walls if your a first-timer.

Walking in here you will know this is the real deal from the smell of the smoke. I have not had better BBQ since Texas. We ordered to go a 4 rib meal with 2 sides and a large order of brisket with 1 side. Prices reasonable. The young ladies taking orders and serving were very pleasant. You can eat in (patio out back as well) and if you want to take out, they will ask you if you want cutlery and will fix you up. They also give you plenty of BBQ sauce. (red and spicy, both are incredible) Hubby loved his brisket, sooo tender. Not burned or overcooked. His pot beans to me were bland but this could be personal choice and not worth taking off a star for especially since you can fix these yourself with salt and BBQ sauce. I myself got the corn bread which was served with butter and honey - just the best ever! My potato wedges were very good also and there were plenty of them. THE RIBS were the star of course and I can see myself going back very often to grab me some of these. (smoky, fall off the bone, lots of meat) The meal fed me twice and was just as good warmed up the next day. The drive back to Bakersfield with these meals in the back of the SUV was killer.. the aroma! You won't regret stopping in here! A real down home BBQ joint with writing on the walls, taxidermy and country tunes!

I've done BBQ in Memphis, Los Angeles, Wichita, Dallas/Ft. Worth, etc... I have found that everyone has their own take on how to make it good and their own. Red House is no different. They have found their style and it works. The ribs are smoked black and yet tender/juicy on the inside (I was gently pulling it off the bone to dip in the sauce... No need to gnaw on these bones) The brisket was smoked till moist and cut across the grain so to fall apart tender. The chicken was tender and juicy without being underdone. Their garlic shrimp was cooked just right (tender and NOT rubbery). Their sides are typical and what to expect from a BBQ joint. I recommend the red coleslaw and dirty rice. They show just what kind of inventiveness has gone into their recipes. I do hope that they come up with a "greens" addition to the menu as well, for I'm sure it would be a hit. There is plentiful seating inside and out with paper towel rolls just an arms reach away. This is a family business. It is NOT a chain BBQ joint if that is what you are looking for. I myself find that BBQ is an art form unto itself with sooooo many variables (wood, humidity, cut of meat, timing) that you will ALWAYS get a different experience no matter where you go. My family's experience here was a very positive one! I hope to be eating here again on our next visit to Tehachapi.

Very good eats here. Did you know you can get Indian Fry Bread and Navajo Tacos in California? No? Neither did I until I wandered in this joint. It was the taco to end all tacos. Sour cream, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, beef brisket, on a gigantic slice of fry bread heaven. Really, it was enough for 3 people. It was that huge. I also ordered their chili. Wow, that was tasty. It had a nice kick to it. Very good flavor. Everything, even their potato wedges, are made to order. They slice the potatoes and fry it, fresh. Their sweet tea was to die for. Seriously, if you are passing through here, you should stop and check it out. I will the next time I pass through!!!

Damn! What an oasis. Stopped in here on a whim one Monday afternoon. Deeeeeelicious ribs and pulled meat combo. And an awesome local IPA to boot, served in a Mason jar. Friendly, small town service and serious character. Fun decor, great music, and that mark of a true BBQ joint - paper towels on every table. I'll be back - every time I come to Tehachapi!!

I had lunch here with my family when we stopped during our San Fran - Las Vegas road trip. It's hard to miss the place, a huge red house in the middle of what it seems the only town for hundreds of miles, the yelp reviews and obviously, the smell of the place are all inviting. The restaurant itself has funky décor and a very casual atmosphere. The wait staff was fine they helped us choose our meals and brought it to our table after we ordered at the register, they did not however, bother to bus our tables during our meals and when we ordered dessert we had to clean up everything ourselves (I know there are places like that I just thought someone would be more attentive given we were the only people in the restaurant at the time) Onto the food: the pulled pork was hands down one of the best pulled pork I've had in my life. The BBQ sauce is amazing. The cornbread was fine, and the pot beans should be served by the bucket given that I would have bought one and brought it with me - it was that good. Here's the thing, the ribs were ok. The sauce was good and the ribs that were soft and falling off the bone were delicious. However the end-ribs and the end part of each rib was uneatable. It was extremely hard almost like trying to chew through bark. Hence 4 stars.

Long line and long wait time for food. My meal wasn't as great as I would of liked. The smell of the place was wonderful while waiting but the food certainly didn't match the smell/taste. Others with me also thought that the wait time for the food didn't match the taste. However they might write their own reviews so I won't add their opinions and such. I might try this place again to try other items on the menu.

Can i just say.... WOW! WOW! WOW! One bite of a rib and my husband and I could only stare at each other in Awe. The meat fell off the bone. He also had the chicken and I also had pulled pork. So yummy! The mac and cheese is tasty. We sat outside and i felt like we were camping! The gal serving us was the sweetest! Very attentive and nice. The plates were approximately $17 for ribs, chicken and/or pulled meat, 2 sides and drink. A little pricey for a place that doesn't take your order tableside. HOWEVER, we will pay this again because the time that is obviously put into making this BBQ the best I have ever had and the atmosphere and service all factors into the cost. We are traveling back to Tehachapi next week and our plans already include Red's House!

Red House BBQ is the stuff we love! We went on a road trip to Tehachapi to check out the train loop and hopped on Yelp to find, "The spot." And we sure did! Red House was busy, like line wrapping around the place busy. Regardless, the staff was friendly, the food was quick and hot, and the restaurant was clean. My husband and I both really enjoyed our meat because it wasn't fatty like most BBQ, and the flavor was great! Our kids had chicken and devoured it too. I must add that none of my family had a chance to partake in my mac and cheese because it was too good for me to stop! Red House BBQ isn't cheap, which is typical of good BBQ restaurants, and your plate doesn't come out piled high with food. With that being said, the food is of good quality, which I actually prefer to quantity.

We read the various reviews and decided to try it knowing some appear to love it and other not so well. I tend to agree with the not so well group. My wife and I had the 4 rib dinner with two sides, The ribs had been cooked so long that the BBQ sauce created a tree bark coating which tasted like splintered wood. Once you got through the bark the little bit of meat left was very dry. The mac and cheese was a very small portion and also very dry, My wife had the beans and expected something like a baked bean and they were also very dry and tasteless. I had potato wedges which was the largest portion of everything served and they were also very dry. You order and pay when you walk in so I added a tip to my charge card. Big mistake. If you still want to try this place I suggest you pay, eat and then decide if a tip is warranted. You might want to decide on McDonalds at least you know what to expect and pay a lot less.

Stopped by for some "BBQ" on the way home from playing in the snow. I ordered the brisket with mac and cheese and the Apache chili. My wife ordered the ribs with brisket, corn bread and red cole slaw. I'm admittedly a bit of a BBQ snob, but I was sorely disappointed in the brisket. What I was served was not even close to any of the brisket I've been served at some of the best BBQ restaurants in the country. It was more like a pot roast. Sliced way too thick, only a hint of smoke, I'm not even sure if it was an actual brisket cut of beef. Imagine a Sunday dinner roast at Grandma's. It tasted OK, but was definitely not brisket. Enough of the bad though, I absolutely LOVED the Apache chili!!!! It was incredible! My wife loved the ribs and the cole slaw, she couldn't quit talking about it! Mac and cheese was good, but nothing to write home about. I will go back, but I won't order the brisket. The pulled pork sandwich looked awesome, so I'm sure I will order that.

This place is a tiny little hidden gem. Been here twice now, and the food has never disappointed. The catfish is Delicious, nice meaty pieces, and not to be missed if you are a catfish fan. Sides are tasty and just the right size. Staff has always been very nice and welcoming. Worth the drive to Tehachapi to have a great meal.

Me and my family went here on a Friday night we got there around 6pm. You order your food and then you go and get a seat an they bring you your food. While waiting in line for our food we overheard the list of things that were sold out, or were running low. So when we finally got up there to order we rambled off our listed just to be told that they were out of shrimp, out of chili, out of brisket, out of the chicken breast, which only left pulled pork, and ribs really. So my mom decided to order the Indian taco but they told her they had no salsa. In the end we ended up getting two pulled pork and ribs. Our sides we got a mac and cheese, fried pickles, red slaw, and beans. The ribs were so tiny and horrible it was almost like they gave us what was left (wouldn't be surprised if it were what was left). The pulled pork was okay I've definitely had better, it needed a tone of BBQ sauce. My son enjoyed the mac and cheese. I personally didn't like it but I don't like homemade mac and cheese. The fried pickles were okay, I wasn't aware they were spears and not slices. I didn't try the beans or the slaw, but my parents weren't too happy with them. After we were done eating my step dad went to go to the bathroom while my mom and I stayed at the table to pick up my sons mess (he's a little over 1 and I refuse to be one of those people who let their kids messy up a restaurant and leave it). Well the greeter came over and asked us to leave so she could clean the table and let someone else sit there. We weren't done and we were being kicked out. Needless to say we wont be going back there. Overpriced mediocre BBQ, and that's even if you can order what you want.

My fiancee loves coming here every time we are in Tehachapi. We live in the San Fernando Valley and drive up to Tehachapi occasionally to see my family and every time we go, he will make sure to set aside time to come here. Their food is amazing, best BBQ I've ever had. The employees are friendly and courteous. The owner is a great guy, he always checks up on the customers. I love the environment and the writing on the walls. It was a brilliant idea! Our names are on there as well =D We will be back again!

Sooo good! When my husband had to go to Tehachapi on business (long story), I looked up "fry bread" b/c my MIL has been raving about it for years, and also b/c I'm a big Sherman Alexie fan and his characters are always eating it. Thus I found this place. Very glad I did. For one thing, currently at least, they have free sodas until 2 on weekdays. I had the pulled pork sandwich. Their pulled pork comes with a mustard-y sauce and green slaw on it, and corn. Husband had beef brisket w/ their regular BBQ sauce. I ordered fry bread with powdered sugar on it for dessert (you can also get a fry bread taco). We both got the smalls, and it was a huge amount of food. I can't imagine what the large is like. I really loved the honey mustard sauce with the pork and the crunchy slaw-- layers of flavor and sweet and salty and textures. I tried the brisket (of course) and what I really liked is how you can taste the smoke and the cooking they put into it, and how they didn't overpower it with the sauce, though the sauce was tasty, too. The fry bread was sort of like a naan-- except it's made of some wheaty, hearty mix-- all puffy and fried up. It was delicious and HUGE, hanging over the plate.

Stopped by here for dinner because it was highly recommended by Yelp. We were in town picking up our daughter from Woodard and decided to have dinner here. I've had a log of BBQ but I was a little disappointed in the the Pulled Pork. It tasted like a cross between N. Carolina Style and Smoked. It was a little confusing. The portions were large but really in my book that's not what really counts compared to taste. However the mac and cheese was really good as well as the ribs. The service was mediocre but not bad.

Promising. The ribs were charred--maybe they like it that way but I would have pulled them from grill much earlier. Cole slaw good. Kids meal not worth price. Native American fry bread available. Cash discount. Good alternative to chains if you're on road.

Probably the best ribs in the world. Very smoky, good bark. The fried pickles were AWESOME!

I would have to say, if your coming to this place you must try the pulled pork and their mac and cheese. Ask to sample their bbq sauce....all are awsome so I could never decide which is better.

Great BBQ in the quaint small town of Tehachapi. The Q here matches some of the best in the South. We liked everything about this place. Food, atmosphere and the building itself

We ate dinner here last night since we were staying in Tehachapi over night. I rarely eat ribs but did so based on the strong reviews. We each had half a rack with two sides for $16.95 minus 3% for cash. The ribs were very good as good as you would expect from a non-chain restaurant. My real issue and the reason for 3 stars is the service. I asked for the honey bourbon sauce and at 5:30 pm they were out. No apology just you want a different sauce. I ordered the mild and spicy sauce on the side but they didn't show up with the order. When my husband asked for them I got two spicy instead of one mild and one spicy. I also tried to order the corn bread as a side but they were out of that too. The chili is very spicy and good as was the salad. So if you love ribs go ahead but otherwise I wouldn't bother. I'm forgiving when a small place is busy but it was not a busy night.

Amazing place. I live in Cal City and I love coming here. The staff are friendly and you will quickly feel welcomed. The food is great and tons of parking space.

I love how the owner walks around asking if everything is okay and if you need something....staff is always asking if you need a refill...that's great customer service. I had ribs and pulled pork with Mac n cheese. It was a beautiful thing. Mac n cheese is out of this world. Great ribs n pulled pork. Not a big fan of the bun they use for sandwiches, but that isn't gonna stop me from going back. Love the food, love the service, and folks sitting around me were friendly......u don't get that at restaurants in Los Angeles. I come up monthly for business, and this will be my first stop. Tomorrow I am buying the feast to take home to the family...yooohooooo!

My friends and I stopped here to get some food on our way back from Death Valley to the Bay Area. I ordered the brisket with 2 sides (mac and cheese and mashed potatoes). It all tasted AMAZING, especially the mac and cheese! But the 5 stars isn't only for their food and awesome service but also because... I went to the bathroom before we left and I forgot my purse in the bathroom. The problem: I remembered over an hour later. Since my friends and I were already very behind on getting home there was no way we can turn back to pick it up. So I called the restaurant, who had luckily found my purse (which btw had my car keys, credit cards, check book, ID, etc). The owner took my information and promised to send my purse to me ASAP. I just received it today, with everything intact. Truly amazing, and I am so appreciative because truly nice and generous people are hard to find. Thank you so much!!

The ambiance and service is authentic TX BBQ. We had ribs and brisket with sides; both entrees were great and very close to Texas BBQ. Mac n cheese was so creamy and flavorful, rice and gravy, red coleslaw, and pinto beans were so delicious. The food was seriously one of the best BBQ I've ever had. We could find nothing wrong with the people or the food, prices are a bit high though. hehe.

Love their pulled pork sandwich. Can't seem to get enough of it. I get to add my own amount of sauce which is great. They have spicy or reg. I'm a regular girl.. Ken goes spicy. Ken gets the brisket and loves it. Our sides are Mac n cheese and pot beans. This time I got slaw on my sandwich... Made all the difference!!!! Made it even better!

For the typical BBQ place you would think you would get a small taste for what they have to offer for a a moderate chunk of your wallet. This place is not like that at all. The prices here are very reasonable for a huge amount of food. I started by seeing this place on Yelp since I was stuck in Tehachapi for a few hours and this restaurant had the highest reviews so I knew I needed to give it a try. Once I arrived there I placed a to go order for their brisket with their navajo chili and their red cabbage. It only took about 5-10 minutes to get my meal. So it begins! I opened up the to go box and noticed the whole front tray was filled to the brim with thick chunks of brisket. It also came with a large roll which is probably made fresh at a nearby bakery. The bricket had a great smoke on it and was delicious. It pulled apart which is a must for bbq. The beans and the cabbage were packaged seperately which was nice so it didnt spill all over the place and I love when my food doesn't touch. The navajo beans were delicious and had just the right amount of spice and the cabbage was great too especially since it didnt get on my clothes. So with everything all together the place is great rain or shine, the prices are good, the portions are huge and the taste is great. Gonna bring the family back here soon. Thank you work for keeping me up in Tehachapi which allowed me to try this great BBQ place.

My first visit to Tehachapi CA from Alhambra CA. I yelped restaurants and Red House BBQ popped up. I followed my instinct and was 100% satisfied. My bbq pulled pork was ohh soo good the baked beans were omg. And the corn bread was delish. My brother had a bbq pulled pork sandwich that was huge. Oh yeah the potatoe salad is to die for. No exagerating here. I know i'll be bach soon. I only wish the gals had a better attitude. They all seemed... ..not very happy. If i worked there SMILES ALL DAY LONG ~v~

Whenever I'm drinking... I think about this place, I just want to call and order their Indian Taco. It was the best dang Indian taco I have ever had. Need I say more? I actually consider taking a road trip to this place again, I live 4 hours away just for the food. So if you happen to be in this town it would be a shame for you not to try their food out. Anyways, I'm seriously always thinking about their taco's. If you order one, just get one. Their Indian taco is so huge. ...it took me 3 times eating it to finish it. Anyways ....I am done rambling on. ...i just want some taco's. But I live so far away. :(

Original (2 star) review: We ordered the Fry Bread Taco's, not the BBQ so take this review with a grain of salt. I'm sure the BBQ is good; I'm just not a fan of BBQ due to all the sugar in the sauces. These had to be the worst fry bread tacos I have ever eaten in my life. They were doughy and not fully cooked, there was little meat in the sauce, and the lettuce was these dark greens that tasted awful with chili. Also had cornbread which was dry and tasted like it came from a package. I don't think I will be back.... **In response to the comments: I'm disappointed in the owners reply. You could have taken a constructive approach and/or invited us back (perhaps the day I came was not typical, and note I did warn reviewers I only tried two menu items!) instead you took a cheap shot at me. Your BBQ is probably pretty great, but the fry bread, at least on the day I came was not cooked right and that is what I based my review on. Your manners not so great. I think my reviews are pretty fair and balanced, and a lot of people agree. So much so that I am a 4 year Yelp Elite in San Francisco - the city with the most Yelp users. In response to your Denny's comment I would suggest reading the other 343 reviews I have written. The overwhelming majority are from independent restaurants. Also look closely at my rating distribution. I'm not the type of reviewer that rates stuff all 1's or all 5's; I take a critical and balanced approach. On my most recent trip to Mojave (and area) I tried several local restaurants before caving in and doing Denny's. Coyote Cafe was one of them. High Yelp reviews from local users in the area, but awful food. I've been to a lot of small towns and found a lot of gems, not this trip. Anyways best of luck running your business; I'm sorry if my review offended you.

Makes staying in Tehachapi worth it. Words straight from my wife's mouth and sums it up. Everything we had was spot on...brisket..ribs...even the Navaho Taco my wife had. Good beer selection.. It's all bottles no draught. We sat outside which was nice as the inside was cool, but not all in our party (grandma) appreciate the rock music...even though I do!

This place never disappoints! It's in the quaint little downtown area of Tehachapi on Business 58 so it's easy off/easy on the freeway. You can eat outside or inside although outside is usually pretty windy! The good stuff: The ribs are impeccably smoked with visible smoke rings and minimal fat left after rendering! Get em dry (no sauce) and you can taste the smokiness! Tenderness abounds! The brisket is amazing and they give you 'a lot of it'! Again, smoke ring is evident and minimal fat. This stuff is lean, moist and tender. Get your hot BBQ sauce on the side and dip the brisket if you need to. The 'ok' to 'not so good' stuff: Cornbread: dry and lukewarm Beans: just ranch beans, nothing to see or taste here! Ribs: awesome Brisket: awesome We'll be back!!
