I've only tried the Aebleskiver here and it's pretty delicious. Not sure about what the service is like at the restaurant. The staff at the window serving Aebleskiver are friendly. It's $3.75 for 3 pancake balls. I come by here every time I visit Solvang. It's definitely worth a try! If you like pancakes and taking Instagram pictures of your food then this is the place to be.

Aebleskivers are apparently the Danish novelty to try while you're in these parts, so try them I did. I got some from the take out window and in my opinion, they look better than they taste. They're like rounded versions of pancakes, paired with jam. The balls are a little dense and dry yet mushy at the same time. I didn't find myself wanting more than one. And if I ever have another one, it'll be in Denmark so I can sample a "real" aebleskiver before I permanently park it on the list of foods I don't care for. Random note, there was an aebleskiver eating contest that day for Solvang Danish Days. If I were to enter an eating contest, I'd pick hot dogs over aebleskivers any day.

I'm pretty sure all the food is precooked. It came out waaaayyy too fast, and not in a good way. I had the meatballs, cabbage and veggies. Totally not worth the $. The meatball had no flavor. I wouldn't even know I had anything in my mouth if it weren't for the sugar in the cabbage. I didn't give this restaurant 1 star because their aebleskivers are so yummy. My dad made them for us as kids all the time, but theirs were better. (Luv ya dad).

Best restaurant in Solvang for sure! Affordable, traditional no-frills diner. I would recommend the Danish dip!! One of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

  • Sandra V.

Delicious!!! Make sure you get the æbleskiver a la mode! Ice cream makes them taste soooo much better. The line was long but moved pretty fast. Paying cash speeds up the process too, but they do take credit cards. Go try them!!!

I had serious mixed feelings about my experience here. We got lucky and were seated immediately for breakfast but had to wait almost 40 minutes before our food arrived because there was a mix-up with our order. First, it got delivered to the table next to us. So then we had to wait longer for our food to come. Then we noticed that our meals that were supposed to come with wheat toast never had the toast delivered. We also ordered the regular stack of pancakes (3), but we only got two. Sigh. The food itself was pretty good. We did not care for the aebelskiver-- didn't taste very good to us. The pancakes were pretty good, but we both thought the ones from Greenhouse Cafe were better. We did notice, however, that the ingredients used were fresher than at Greehouse Cafe. If you are willing to risk having your order screwed up and aren't super hungry or in a rush, then try it out. If not, probably better off going somewhere else.

Service is ok. Food was good- we especially enjoyed the danish dip sandwich, although the french roll almost seemed too soft. We also had the vegetarian panini. It was good but I expected both sandwiches to be bigger. The restaurant has a large variety of kids meals and they are all reasonably priced. The danish pastry was warm, fresh and was the right amount of sweet--with the large lines outside I expected them to be better. Like a previous reviewer mentioned they tasted like pancakes with a nice jelly on top. Overall, nice experience. I would return...but after I try more family friendly restaurants in town first. ..

We have eaten breakfast here before, and it was just fine. But what we come for, over and over again, sometimes twice a day when we are visiting Solvang are the aebleskivers. These are something akin to a round pancake with a little of New Orleans beignet going on. These are served hot (you can watch then being made from the outside) with powdered sugar on top and raspberry jam on the side. They come 3 to an order, and no place, none, in Solvang can make as good an aebleskiver as here. Plus, there is the added bonus that the owner is a little bit of a sourpuss, which is actually quite amusing.

We only went to the side window, but The Æbleskiver is a must have, although ours could have been warmer in the middle. Still really tasty though!

Breakfast was disgusting. Ordered Danish Pancakes which were tasteless and doughy. Potatoes were surprisingly bland and greasy and a little burned (as in black.) Jam served with their special Aebelskiver tastes like corn syrup and the Aebelskiver themselves were underwhelming and disappointing. The whole family was bummed. There was nothing we ordered that was even mediocre. Waitress was friendly and helpful, so at least there was that...

  • Mason M.

Really enjoyed the docor of the restaurant which was very danish. Had the Aesbleskivers which were nice and fluffy and with the homemade raspberry jam and powered sugar were to tasty. Service was quick and friendly.

I would not come here again! I had Danish meatballs with red cabbage. Meatballs were ok. The red cabbage was horrible, there was so much of vinegar that you couldn't even put it to mouse. Side vegetables that were coming with the dish were neither crisp nor well cooked. The water was most disgusting, it tasted rotten. I asked to change my water, but changed one tasted same rotten. Overall service was ok.

If you ever come to this Scandinavian Village, you absolutely must have to try out the Aebleskiver! They're very popular for it! It would almost be like coming to Chicago, and not trying out a deep dish pizza, hehehe :P They're so hot and fresh, yummy, light fluffy pancakes topped with raspberry jam and powered sugar. You can either eat them inside of the Solvang Restuarant or purchase it from outside their window and eat it as street food while you browse thru the cute little shops. I came here on a day field trip as part of the Pasadena City College Adult Extending Learning course, and it was absolutely fun!

Only worth the Aebelskivers (which are pretty basic dough balls with cheap jam) at the walk-up window. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THIS RESTAURANT. We ordered hot pastrami and corned beef sandwiches and got a few slices of CHEAP LUNCH MEAT. We were shocked and just looked at our food in disbelief. The split pea soup didn't have much flavor either. It is a tourist trap where the owner makes hand over fist money and has no concern for their quality of food or service. GO ANYWHERE ELSE!

    (1)
  • John H.

I can only comment on the take-out window for aebleskivers so that's what I'm going to do. The aebleskiver line is crazy. It's super long, unorganized, and can get rather pushy. It seems like the tourists in this town have no concept of a queue. So what did we do. We of course shoved ourselves in the mob and slowly inched our way forward. For fried dough with raspberry jam. It's decent. Not the best dessert ever. The dough was a little too thick. I wish there was more jam. But it's definitely not a bad place to pick up something sweet in Solvang. It's actually one of the really good ideas to try Danish food.

Waitresses were rude and in a rush. (There weren't that many customers there either). Our server seated us and didn't say anything like good morning. When she came back my friend was reading a page in the menu where it was explaining what aebleskivers are and she told him abruptly to turn to the back of the menu because they were only serving breakfast. When my friend was asking what drinks they had she again abruptly said they had drinks like ay any restaurant. No interest in telling us about their establishment; really in a rush. We were trying to take in the ambience and Solvang as a whole. The other servers were equally indifferent to proving good customer service. We will never go back.

Sidewalk window review: $6 for an order of aebleskivers alamode If you enjoy donut holes, this is the place to be. If you like to try new things, this is the place to be. If you like to drink and then need a snack... yup you found it! Went later in the afternoon (Saturday 4pm) after trying a few wine tasting rooms. The crowds had thinned out so we were able to eat on the nearest bench. By this time however; the side walk did look like a HOT Mess! (Pick up your trash people) And the girls serving up the tasty balls, don't seem to be amused with any questions or comments any more. Good thing is... at least the turnaround is so fast, you're getting fresh aebleskievers! Experience... check

WOW --- This place looks like an old diner that I would not have gone into if it weren't for my Mom's gut instinct, as they're really not my thing. GO IN - AND ORDER THE CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH!!!! I now aim for this restaurant when I'm in this cute town - just for that sandwich. Never tasted anything like it. Yummy yum yum. Been back twice now - just for that sandwich. Don't know about the rest of their food - Save that the "aebleskivers" - sweet apple filled puff pastries with strawberry compote - according to my dear friend were to die for too ... I couldn't fit them into me though, which I think made the house chef upset as that is their signature dish. To be honest I would make the Chicken Salad Sandwich their second signature dish ... oooh gosh I want to go back again ... Christmas time - look up.. The owner puts a million different little ceramic houses along the eaves.. no two are alike.

Aebleskivers with jam! The jam was so good and not too sweet. The Aebleskivers were also good and a pretty good price for three big ones.

Whatever it was you were doing or planning to do in Solvang, forget about it until you stop for some AEBLESKIVERS. Pancake balls dusted with powdered sugar and topped with raspberry jam... Perfect for not sharing. :)

I can't say enough good things. Excellent food, excellent service! The restaurant was busy but our food came out piping hot, exactly as ordered and delicious. The restaurant was also extremely clean! We will definitely be back on our next time through Solvang!

While visiting wine country we stopped by the city, city? town of Solvang and stopped here to have some breakfast & lunch for others,i had to get my weekend breakfast before anything! Tried the Chicken Friend Steak and it was crispy and real good, better then a few other spots i would have to say,at least better then a denny's or ihop. I also tried their so called Ableskeevers (the only way i can discribe is it pancake/cornbread in a ball) but let me tell you, they tasted great with the syrup and powder sugar they add to it,just make them taste much better,if they were plain i would rather have a Biscuit for real. Place gets way crowded for my taste,i really do not see waiting over 30minutes for food,if i am sitting down and enjoying a drink depending on the time of day,i really do not mind, but waiting to be seated is something i call Loco to wait... I look back now and i realize that i got lucky to walk in and sit down since a buddy of ours was saving us a spot to sit at,but i would suggest you get there really early or if you do not mind the wait, then chill out and wait. So if you are ever in Solvang, try this place out,or just pick up some Ableskeevers for a nice treat...

Come for the abelskeivers and stay for the food. Their balls are amazing!

I'm only reviewing the aebleskiver. So my mom tried the aebleskiver before, but she wanted to come back and try it again. This was my first time trying it so I was pretty excited. What we got: Aebleskiver($3): when I first looked at it, it looked good. 3 pancake balls with raspberry jam and powdered sugar? Sounds good to me! However...it wasn't that tasty to me. I know that place is known for that, but it tasted to flour-y to me and not sweet enough. Service: It was okay too. I mean we got it togo so me and my sister ordered it, waited, and just left.

Yummy food, good service. Abelskiever was tasty.

As if the aebleskivers weren't reason enough to come here, I found the best hot dog I've ever had at this Solvang Restaurant. It comes with crispy onions and homemade pickles that still look a little like cucumbers. Strange as it may sound, I've never had a better hot dog in my entire life! Come here for lunch and dessert!

  • Minerva L.

ordered the aebleskivers and also omlete..the aebleskivers was ok..not all that great..it was more doughy in the center..the omlete is ok..this place can get busy outside for aebleskivers...the food isn't really that great..i think i'd eat else where if anything.. they sell ollalieberry preserve and i bought the sugar free one..other than that..the wait was super long..service was eh..

I had heard of Solvang for a few years, so on a recent road trip we stopped. It was cuter and larger than I thought. We were strolling the shops and noticed everyone eating a dessert. I thought it must be one of those "must try" items. So I did. the line was long but worth the wait. I couldn't finish all three, they are sweet. I would get them again and share. I've been to denmark but didn't have these while there. I must have missed out.

  • Christine A.

Not a review for the restaurant: Just for the Aebleskivers. Aebleskivers!!! Aebleskivers!!! Oh how I've been missing out! I went to solvang quite often while growing up, as it was always a pit stop on our way up north. However, I never tried Aebleskivers until last year when my bf took me there. My reaction? Amazed... I am not even an donut lover, but wow! This... was delicious! Warm donuts with raspberry jam & powdered sugar. A must try!

I wanted to like this place, but there were just a few too many disappointments. Service was rushed and unfriendly, esp from the older guy manning the cash register. (Our table was by the door, and we didn't see him smile a single time at anybody.) The food wasn't that great, and was on the salty side. Even the aebleskivers were just...ok. The hype wasn't justified. Wouldn't eat here again. I'm sure there are better places in Solvang.

This place is a joke. It's an absolute insult to Denmark. Aebleskivers were not bad but are nothing special either. It's just semi sweet pancake dough cooked round. That's it. At least they're not ripping people off, it's only 3 dollars for three balls. The eating menu is ridiculous. The portions are ridiculous (stingy on the meat, plenty of old veggies and white starch, obviously microwaved out of a pouch or out of a can). There's hardly anything authentically Danish about it. Just because there's things like herring on the menu doesn't make it a Danish restaurant. I've been to Copenhagen and it certainly wasn't like this. The management probably know themselves that this is the case; the menu says "Danish 'style' this", "Danish 'style' that". Green beans are tough; like chewing green twig sprouts off a young tree - I don't have to tell you where they source their vegetables. Their "sausage" and "meatball" is more like generic grocery store frozen isle stuff, not even as good as Jimmy Dean's out of my microwave. I honestly thought they boiled their meat before serving; flavourless, complete ripoff and an insult to Denmark. Oh, and for a 13, 14 dollar "combo" dish I got ONE tasteless meatball, and ONE butterflied grey piece of sausage that was about the length and width of my middle finger, yes, to the texture of micro waved processed, or boiled senseless. All the other components of the dishes? Under funded middle school cafeteria microwave canned jarred boxed mess. What's a hungry tourist to do? not eat? no chance. So the business keeps afloat and the atrocity continues. So disappointed.

Not the best service, don't expect refills unless you ask, which is hard because servers are constantly rushing by all the tables. Prices are NOT $, rather $$. Pea soup lacked flavor and ham tasted canned :/ Super crowded!!!! Next time we will be eating at the Red Viking which offers the same exact food at $5 cheaper a plate!!! Red viking also has Finn salad bar.

At the time of this review, average score is 3.5 stars. That sounds about right. I was walking down the street and saw the sign for aebleskiver. What the heck is aebleskiver? I obviously had to try it. In fact, that was the only thing I ordered here. I walked in, ordered some to go. Within less than a minute, my order was ready. The way they cook it reminds me of Japanese "takoyaki". But that's where the similarity ends between Danish Aebleskiver and Japanese Takoyaki. Aebleskiver was covered in raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Sweetness is very subdued, just the way I like it. However, did I enjoy my aebleskiver? Not really. I could not get past the weird texture of aebleskiver. Slightly crispy exterior, inside is moist and mushy. Just plain weird for me. But try it at least once if you are in Solvang area.

  • Mona W.

It was hard to resist the charm of these aebleskivers when you walk by their take out window. Watching as these balls of sugary love carefully being prepared, I was lured into this massive line of people waiting for their treat. To be perfectly objective, the aebleskivers were just alright. They are more of a novelty because you don't find them very often. If you had never had them before, think of them as sphere shape pancakes. The surface is not as crispy as donut because they weren't deep fried. I wasn't too fond of their jam. I am too spoiled with high quality syrup and artisan fruit preserve. Their raspberry jam was just too sweet and too artificial. They might not be that amazing but your trip to Solvang won't be completed without eating some aebleskivers. Seriously.

I love Solvang.. whenever we pass by we stop here for lunch! I do like the pea soup, and we tried the bratwurst as well. Pretty good but I really come here for the aebleskivers! They are soooo yummy and they hit the spot! In my opinion their pea soup is better than Pea Soup Andersen's down the street!

    (4)
  • Cameron M.

Best aebleskivers I've ever had!! You can't visit Solvang and leave without trying an order!

  • Judi M.

We've been here a couple of times for the aebleskivers. Both times we've had a meal (breakfast or lunch) before indulging on the sweet treats we came for. Our first meal consisted of their sausage sampler. I'm not a big sausage fan but this meal was very hearty and I got to try varieties I would never had a chance to otherwise. The last time we came, I had the danish pancakes. They're similar to swedish pancakes in that they're thinner than american pancakes, but not as thin as crepes. The server brought me raspberry jelly along with my syrup and butter. After having it with the jelly, I didn't even bother with the syrup. The pancakes were DELISH! They were more substantial than crepes, but still not as filling as regular pancakes. Coupled with the home made jelly and it was heaven! I made sure to save room for the aebleskivers 'cuz that is the main reason we came. We had them a la mode with more of the home made jelly and it hit the perfect sweet spot. YUMYUMYUM! I think we will definitely make it a tradition to stop by the Solvang Restaurant for these yummy treats each time we're in town.

Walked by this place and saw a line forming from the door. I saw the video on display. I stood in line out of curiousity I ordered the same order as the one before me One order of round donut? It's called Aebleskiver.. Able skier? Able skewer? One order of round donut please.... Waited for 10 minutes, came out 3 round dough with strawberry jelly on top. It was bland without the jelly and nothing remarkable. Bought it out of hype. Felt really stupid. Now I know how iphone users must've felt like...

    (3)
  • Gail J.

It's a dense donut. It has super sweet strawberry sauce. It's like if a jelly donut mated with a small loaf of pancake. Jelly donuts produce beautiful babies! The deuce of Aableskiver probably weighed as much as my head. Thus, it is probably appropriate that I therefore put it in my mouth. Actually, that logic is strange. Forget I said that. Anyhow, support the Danish settlement by indulging in a dessert that tastes just as great at room temperature as warm (this is what my roommate said, I don't necessarily agree). It's worth a few minute queue to say you ate something that 97% of Americans can't spell.

    (4)
  • Kimberly P.

3.5 stars for their offering of a unique breakfast experience of freshly made aebelskievers and danish sausages and a never-ending refill of hot coffee as you need it. It is also worth mentioning that my love for their AMAZING raspberry jam (made on the premises per our server) is an enduring one. Do yourself a favor and buy a jar before you go home...DELECTABLE! Yes, I could think of no better word to describe it.

We stooped here with another couple to enjoy the area and some breakfast. The food was delicious and the service was fast and friendly even though the place was busy.

Behold the Aebleskiver!! I had no idea what this was until i got closer to see the person making these delectable round treats! What it is, is an pancake ball covered with warm raspberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. One order got us 3 large balls and it was enough to share because it'll be too filling to eat yourself, If you're in Solvang then you should definitely give it a try because it's cripsy on the outside, but moist and soft on the inside. the raspberry jam is what makes this treat sing (:

    (4)
  • Scott A.

3.5 stars. Stopped by the abelskivers, which they are known for. You don't have to sit down because they have a take out window featuring these treats. Think baked doughnut holes with powdered sugar and jam. They're not out of this world, but for about $3.40 they also won't put a hole in your wallet. To me, they're more hype than anything, but if you're visiting for the first time you want to try what a place is famous for. Not sure if the Den's would be proud, but they sure put a lot out through the day.

My aunt & uncle, who scoped out town a day before we got there, found this place & boy are we glad we did. They serve some of the best Danish food I have ever had outside of the bay area (copenhagen Bakery & Cafe in Burlingame.) It is a very casual place with no table cloths, a lot of regulars, friendly service, & they really go all out for the customer & you might even find people talking to each other from table to table. So, what brought us here was the aeblescivers, Danish pancake like balls topped with orange infused raspberry jam & powdered sugar; the orange definitely giving a sweet note to the tart raspberry; the aeblescivers themselves themselves are lite & fluffy & go perfect with na side of Danish sausage with unlike American sausage, is so seasoned & served with a wonderful sweet mustard. They made a repeat customer out of us twice & we shal return next time in town. I also ordered a smorgis bord (assortment of Danish openfaced sandwiches) to go with tender & well seasoned chicken, sausage, red cabbage that was divinely sweet & sour, rye bread that was nutty & full of flavor. So, for a wonderful Danish experience with friendly service at rock bottom prices, Solvang cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.

Our last and final stop for our Solvang adventure was at the Solvang Restaurant. How fitting. It is home of the famous Aebelskiver. We didn't actually get to try the made to order delights during this leg of the trip at this restaurant but we will be back! Instead we enjoyed a breakfast of 2 coffees, the California Eggs Benedict, and the Denver Omelet with toast. The Eggs Benedict was good but the tomatoes weren't ripe and the avocados on the side were a great compliment and very yummy. The Denver Omelet was the best ever tasted and loaded with green and red bell peppers and plenty of hearty ham. No Danish outfits again but plenty of delightful Danish decor. Our waitress left the check and when we slapped down a credit card to pay we were told she was too busy to take it and to pay up front. That was a touch rude but the manager stepped in and took our card. Business is booming in Solvang and this place got packed within seconds. We'll be back for more!

Got an order of Aebleskiver to go...it's sweeeetttttt, good and cheap! 3 balls for $3.40 Score! Shared it with the bees outside on the bench -dang there are a lot of bees in Solvang!

    (4)
  • Erik L.

Went into Solvang Restaurant and tried the Aebleskivers - giant donut holes (2" round), unglazed, smothered in raspberry sauce, and lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. The waitress recommended an order per person. (Ignore her.) I personally found them to be dense and filling, vs. light and fluffy, and the raspberry sauce they were swimming in to be a bit overwhelming.

We only stopped in to try the much hyped aebelskivers and figured this place was as good as any. They looked sooooo good on all the recipe books so prominently placed everywhere in every shop all over this lovely town. If only they looked or tasted anything like the pictures..... So what we got was basically mounds of dough with a sickly sweet red fruit syrup drizzle. Kinda funny since there are lovely jars of lovely raspberry jam for sale also prominently placed all over the place. So why not serve these mounds of dough with the jam rather than the disgusting syrup? Or hey...how about making something that looks like what they're apparently supposed to look like? They weren't awful, but one was pretty much it for me. Also, the overpriced sausage on the side was just kinda tasteless and oily and only came with a little cup of mayo. Ok, so maybe Danish food isn't for me. But I really think in a town this lovely they all could try a bit more and make some better food, especially something as hyped up as this pastry.

Took my (then) 5 year old granddaughter for a train ride vacation---we took the train from Tustin to Santa Barbara and then rented a small SUV and drove to Solvang...just she and I. We walked here almost every morning from our hotel for our mid morning aebelskivers (SP??) I had yummy coffee and she had a gigantic hot chocolate..never had another meal here---this was a morning snack spot--it was wonderful

  • Jessica P.

I came here for the abelskivers and left okay. You get three spheres of pancake batter and a side of raspberry jam. It is touristy but definitely hit a spot.

  • Gerald C.

Not sure what the big whoop is about an aebleskiver. I tried them... it's like eating a large, cakey, dry, donut hole. The lunch food had the quality of a typical Denny's Diner. Great for kids, but for me, pass.

    (2)
  • James L.

bad service and the food wasn't that great. People come for the Aebleskivers and i don't really understand, but it didn't taste good at all. It's like a pancake, but turns it into a ball look a like and service with in-house jam.... tuna sandwish wasn't that good either...

    (3)
  • Sophia C.

I'm rating this purely on the abelskivers. I made these babies at home, so a) was a nice change of pace that SOMEONE else made it for me (ahem, note hubby!) and b) just reminds me of the Netherlands when I stuffed my face of these pancake goodness. The line on a Saturday around 3ish was nothing but 5 minutes, and the few minutes was definitely worth the wait. The pancake balls were cooked perfectly but I do have to say, the raspberry jam on top is way too sugary! could have done w/ it on the side! Overall, c'mon...it's pancake balls. You can make it at home...or if you're in cutey town Solvang, pick some up and pretend you were in Sweden for a bit!

  • Bob C.

Aebleskiver (pancake ball, much like how the hush puppy is a cornbread ball). We came in here for their aebleskiver b/c a customer outside had proclaimed they had the best in Solvang and I've never tried it. That's when I realized that I didn't care much for aebleskivers. I did, however, very much enjoy their Danish meatballs. Densely packed, nice consistency, and good flavor. Mmmm, tasty. The only thing is, is that for the aebleskivers (3), Danish meatballs (2), and 2 drinks came to around 17 bucks. Yowza!

  • Bobby C.

Cheap, quick, decent food-- Must have their Aebelskivers (traditional Danish pastry of dough and jam) as everyone else says,, but if you're going just to try them you can pick up at the window without having to eat there. They have a like a mini walk up. That being sad, the service was a a little rude. And they won't serve a croissant sandwich until a certain time. Even though you can order the croissant on the side and make your own sandwich (haha, I outsmarted them). That being said it's worth a go but I'll try somewhere else next time I'm in 'the Vang.'

3 stars for the restaurant. They are clean and somewhat friendly, but the food is nothing to write about other than the...... 5 STAR ABELSKIVER. yes. yes. yes. I was sad that the Abelskiver window was not open and we had to actually go in and sit down. We did none the less and waited a very short time for the pancake balls to arrive smothered in hot raspberry jam and sprinkled with sugar. DANISH BALLS ARE MY FRIEND. Even my boyfriend confessed to loving the tasty round balls more than me. They are life changing. They make the clouds in the sky go away. They color your world. They are pure pure heaven. Just close your eyes and swallow. Ok, I do apologize if this all is coming off a bit....perverse.... but these are like little orgasms. seriously.

Breakfast in Solvang is always a ritual when I visit. Last weekend, I went against the grain and ordered Danish Pancakes for breakfast at Solvang Restaurant. You know what? I love the Danish Pancakes better than America's own Buttermilk Pancakes. Solvang Restaurant's Danish Pancakes are good and plentiful. Drown 'em in butter and jam is a must! You'll leave feeling happily full for wine tasting.

I had a Danish hot dog with onion strings and pickled cucumbers with fries - the fries were ok, and the hot dog was really good, but it absolutely fell apart. Still tasty. My husband wanted to try the creamed herring. It came with a variety of veggies and some bread to make sandwiches with, and it was good. We had pickled herring for the first time a few nights before, and the two dishes are similar. I think I like pickled better :) The Aebleskivers are a cross between a donut and a pancake. It was fine. The raspberry jam made it worth eating. The price was very good for what we got. It wasn't excellent, but it was pretty good.

Yum yum yum aebleskivers! Theyre like these donut balls with bunch of raspberry jam and I highly suggest getting ice cream on it too! This place was jam packed during lunch time, but if you come here for a snack at around 4pm its pretty empty and you can grab a bench nearby. There's a side-order window. Everyone says this is the best in town, so I'm going with that!

Love their abelskiver a la mode!! The line was a little long but it moved super fast. The cafe inside is just okay and dated but the real reason for stopping here would be the abelskivers! The real reason for my 4 star review. I would give the cafe inside three stars.

We went to buy Æbleskiver mix for a friend. Æbleskivers are kind of like popovers but heavier. They call them Danish donuts. We just had to get an order. You stand at a window outside the restaurant and order as you watch them making the Æbleskiver right there. Cool. I was not crazy about them, to be frank. They were just sweet balls of dough with jam on them. Ours were cold, too. I think they would have tasted better drizzled in good dark chocolate, but then, so would anything. I cannot rate the restaurant itself since we did not go in but it was packed with people at 1:30 pm on a Saturday. Be sure to buy the Æbleskiver mix here as it is cheaper than the other shops.

Aebleskivers. Aebleskivers. Aebleskivers! Oh cool, an Aebleskiver just appeared! Ah I wish I could have one right now... Warm, fluffy balls topped with ice cream and strawberry(or raspberry) sauce on top. MMMmmmMm.... Definitely a must-go place if you're passing by Solvang!

I couldn't leave Solvang without trying these aebleskivers, so I came here (luckily thirty minutes before they closed) and ordered three of them with the jam on the side. Now, I love pancakes, so you would think these aebleskivers were a big hit with me, but I thought they were just okay. It was actually the raspberry jam that stole the show. It was really sweet, but it was so good! You definitely have to eat these when they're fresh and warm.

Great aebleskiver, but the man behind the counter was downright rude. Plenty of places in Solvang to get good food. I'll stick with those where they actually treat me like I'm not a nuisance.

  • Judi S.

If you want the Aebleskiver, they have got the Aebleskiver. All the Aebleskiver you could ever want. They are famous for it. What is Aebleskiver? A buttermilk pancake ball topped with jam and dusted with powdered sugar. Aebleskiver deadly. Aebleskiver dangerous. Aebleskiver absolutely freakin' delicious. I love you, I hate you, I want you... damn you Aebleskiver!

Came here because of Yelp and was curious about the Aebelskivers, but decided to dine in for dinner as well because it was dark & cold outside. - The Aebelskivers were just okay for me. A little overpriced ($3.55) IMO and I didn't think it was anything special. - We got the Danish Sausage & Meatball combo plate & German Bratwurst plate, and both came with soup (or salad), veggies, mashed potatoes, red cabbage/saurekraut. Personally I didn't like the Danish Sausage, felt there was too much spice in it. But enjoyed the rest of the food, and actually thought the food was much better than the hyped up Aebelskivers. - Service was good. But the restaurant was pretty old and worn out. I would probably return again for the food only.

Aebleskiver is the only reason to come here. Not because it's out of this world amazing but because it's a signature dessert of Solvang My wife and I came here for early dinner and aebelskiver. The dinner was a meatball, sausage combo with mash, red cabbage and mixed green beans. Meatball and mash were a little hard, like they have been out all day and the sausage was just ok. I left the red cabbage and frozen veggies alone. Meal will set you back around 15 bucks which we thought was a little steep considering the quality. Aebleskiver is pretty good. Think of it like a deep fried twinkie without the filling or the pancake puffs that Denny's used to sell(maybe they still do?). Covered in a raspberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. If they were filled with custard, whipped cream or more jam this dessert would be over the top. Have it with a scoop of ice cream because you're on vacation. Definitely a must try if you are in this quaint little town.

Home to the Famous Aebleskivers!! :) Went on a trip to San Simeon and we decided to detour to Solvang, CA. So beforehand, I did some research on where to eat and what to do and this place is on my list!! AEBLESKIVERS - a Danish pancakes in a distinctive shape of a sphere. You could tell that this place serves the best Aebleskivers in town! Long a-- line and it's affordable! $3.25/3 pieces It's topped with powdered sugar and raspberry jam! It's really good and fresh! The restaurant itself is just okay. Nothing special aside from $$ menu! They offer the Aebleskivers inside the restaurant but it cost more cents.. so get you butt up and fall in line! haha Good service and didn't take long for our orders.. Definitely coming back next time I'm around town! :) ** Also, their split pea soup is good! But I suggest to go to Andersons! :)

Aebleskivers! Ok-yes..the ball of dough was warm, a bit fluffy, covered in preserves and topped with powdered sugar, but I just didn't find it to be all that. It reminded me of eating a ball of soft cornmeal. I was hoping for something that would melt in my mouth (think Krispy Kreme), but that wasn't the case. Good thing for the glass of water-1 bite Aebleskiver, 1 gulp water. Yup, enough said. As for the rest of the breakfast-I had eggs benedict, danish pancake (which is 1/4 inch thick...not super thin) served with butter...and...that's it, and my husband had the omelet which he said was not bad. Listen to all the other reviews and don't get breakfast here. IHOP is so much better, Denny's is better, but I must say service wasn't as bad as people have mentioned. So if you must, try the aebleskiver and decide for yourself if it's worth it (get it to go). I wish I had gone to Paula's Pancake restaurant, but I'll be saving that for another trip. Check out my pics. what2eatz.blogspot.com/2…

Food was great! Prices were awesome! Our server was extremely friendly. The interior was pretty cool. Only reason this place doesn't get a 5 star review, the owner (I think he was the owner) was extremely creepy. Awkward interaction with us while we were trying to eat. And he creeped us out when taking our check. Not sure what he had going on.

If you ever get a chance to stop in Solvang, make sure you make a pit stop at this place, if simply for their infamous aebleskivers. Love how they're served fresh & warm, and you get a glimpse of them in action at the purchase window. Super cute! If you're not a big fan of anything too sweet like me, ask for the jam on the side & drizzle it on yourself for your liking. Reminds me of the hawaiian malasada. Goes perfect with a good cup of coffee!

The right place to try Aebelskivers, a traditional Danish sweet in between a pancake and a doughnut, shaped as a ball and served with raspberry jam. Pictures and review at: stillservedwarm.com/dani…

I like the Aebleskiver! There were many people queing to buy the dessert. I was ask for to go so no comments about the service in the restaurant. Its worthy to give a try about Danish food when u reach solvang. However, the price is not longer 3 for 3.40. It has been increase.

Abelskiver -- alright, I don't know what the hype is all about... it's basically a flour ball with powder sugar and jam on top... food as well as service also avg, I am being nice to give it a 3 star, should be 2.5 since I don't plan on going back there again. Oh, did I mention that they are pretty pricing for serving avg sandwiches and burgers?

Like flies, we were drawn to the walk-up window to buy aebleskivers. Thought they were pretty darn good. However, I'd eat pretty much anything with powdered sugar and raspberry jam on it. Love the benches outside, so you can sit and eat and watch the world walk by. Great snack or dessert. We will definitely be back.

You know the food's decent, but the real draw is the cute ambiance and the aebleskewers.

*** This is a review for their takeout aebleskivers stand only! *** Think of obsese donut holes with a very dense egg center. Now top those off with powdered sugar and some cherry-like jam, and you've got yourself the famous aebelskivers. About ~$4 gets you three of these big Danish desserts - hot and fresh. Even though it's simply pouring a mix into what looks like a waffle iron, it's nonetheless fun to see. =) There's a tendency to overdouse the aebelskivers with jam- so ask for them to have the jam on the side. Since these are made in bulk, the quality is hit or miss. We got 2 that were burnt on the sides and one that was not. But all in all, if you've never had one of these this is something I wouldn't skip. =)

Aebleskiver! Fabled to be a concoction prepared by the Vikings in the divots of their shields, these warm, fluffy popover-like pancake balls covered with jam and powdered sugar are simply delicious. My girlfriend and I snacked on a standard order of three and then returned the following day for some more! We also enjoyed a side of the Medisterpolse Danish sausage which came with a tangy house prepared sauce. Combined with the Aebleskiver they made for a satisfying little meal. If I ever return to Solvang or am passing through I would definitely stop by. Note however that they close at 3PM on weekdays.

I would say overall this restaurant is a bit pricey but definitely has it's good dishes. The service was slow for us since the owner was trying to teach or get the hostess to do her job. I had the sausage combo plate for $15ish that comes with their sausage, meatball and some pickled stuff. I ordered the Aeberskivel ($4) afterwards as dessert but it was too much for me at that point. The jam was definitely good and I know they mix it there at the restaurant. My fav part about this restaurant is watching them make the Aeberskivels!

i was wayyy too full to eat any more when we got to the solvang restaurant. but i just could NOT resist trying its signature aebleskiver, one of the things you must try when you are in solvang. the aebleskiver is a 4inch pancake ball, completely pancake all the way to the core, with a generous coating of thick strawberry syrup and powdered sugar on top. for $2.75, you get 3 of these at the window. right outside the restaurant! if you peak in while you wait in line (if there is a line) you can watch them being made! :D i certainly enjoyed my aebleskivers, and it was so worth trying. there were plenty of nice benches along the pedestrian-friendly streets, so we got to sit down and devour our treats.

ONE word. Aebleskivers. nuff said. Solvang is definitely one of my favorite stops when going on a scenic drive down the coast... and stopping for some Aebleskivers is definitely a MUST. Come on, who doesn't like big puffy warm balls of pancakey goodness paired with ice cream and raspberry sauce.... Y-U-M yum.

OMG, I cannot believe I have not reviewed this place or any other place in Solvang!! Serious??? I go up to this area at least twice a year and def. got my MUST frequent places! This is certainly one of them! Oh ya, the aebleskivers with raspberry sauce drippin' on top! This whole area's a gem! We've even taken our bikes up and it's such a cool area to ride around!

You gotta try their Famous Aebleskiver.. It's like a waffle and tastes like soft pancake inside.. media3.px.yelpcdn.com/bp… They are pretty big, almost the size of a tennis ball.. Plus they pour powdered sugar and raspberry jam on top... This will hit the spot after a good meal.. I've been to this restaurant before and the food is pretty good.. I have tried their Philly Steak/Cheese and Danish Sausages.. They have a lot of selections of Three Egg Omeletes, Belgian Waffles, Hot and Vegeterian Sandwiches, they sell BEER too.. Hey, it's better service than that Belgium Cafe across the street.. Unlike the Belgium Cafe, THEY SERVE DANISH STYLE PANCAKES... Yesssssss...

Stopped in for lunch and to try the Aebelskivers that everyone raves about. I ordered a veggie sandwich. It had grilled onions, eggplant, mozzarella, and tomato on panini style bread. It was actually really good. Also ordered a side of the all beef chili and that was great too. My husband ordered the fried chicken and he liked it. Those Aebelskivers are to die for, especially with ice cream on top. Surprisingly, the service was excellent, very friendly and attentive.

This is a review of the restaurant. We stopped by the visitor center and they recommended this as a great restaurant to get Danish food. We're gullible apparently and came here for a late lunch. It tasted and looked like food you would find at a Denny's or Waffle House. I had the combination plate (sausage, meatball, mashed potatoes, veggies) and my wife had the chicken sandwich. It was all very bland and not remarkable in any way. The service was like a cheap diner and the tables/place settings were cheap and simple also. But, of course, they charge tourist-town prices. The only redeeming factor was the aebleskivers, which were actually pretty tasty - fairly dense dough with a warm raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. If this is the highlight of Danish food, I'll stick to Norwegian and Swedish.

I have often eaten at the Red Viking down the street and wanted to compare the Solvang Restaurant. When we first got there, there was a large crowd outside. EEK. But we were seated in less than 15 minutes into our own booth. The guy running the place seemed very friendly and efficient. It took 5 minutes of just sitting at our table to get drinks. Which when a restaurant is packed, we get that service is under stress... but get people their drinks right away and they don't mind waiting. Plus the quicker you serve us, the quicker you turn that table over. The server was good after the initial wait and then forgetting I had ordered coffee. Which by the way was kinda bland. I wish more restaurants served good coffee. We wanted to order everything.... the Yelp reviews were quite favorable. In the end, we ordered the omelete with everything... bacon, danish sausage, vegetables. It was fine, a slight bit over cooked and I was wishing we had avocado instead. But it was okay. The sourdough toast was good. The hashbrowns were some of the best I have had. Just simple potatoes with a fine shred... but not too greasy. Nice. We ordered a side of Danish Sausage. If you have not had this, get it. Even if you do not care for sausage (I do not). It is amazing. I always get an order of it when I drive through Solvang. The SOlvang restaurant serves it with a small plastic tub of honey mustard, which if you dip the sausage into it... it's crazy good. I want to drive back up the 4 hours just to have this again. We also had the danish pancakes (can you tell we over did it?). They were okay. I would not order them again though... because at the end of the day... they just got in the way of eating more aebelskivers!. We ordered only one serving of these (three balls). And they are amazing. As always. Man... if you do nothing else but get the aebelskivers and danish sausage, you are going to heaven. The raspberry preserves are tasty and add a nice sweet tang to the aebelskivers. You can order the aebelskivers alone outside through a counter. There was a long line when we left. But sit inside. Enjoy the place.

On the second most recent trip to Solvang, I had lunch at this adorable diner and sat in the EXACT spot where a scene of Sideways took place, way in the back by the coffee maker. I was in a mood. So I didn't try the restaurants' unique Scandinavian sandwiches, but went with comfort food (Turkey Club, no tomato) and it was fair, but not really great. Probably should have been more adventurous. But as far as Aebleskiver goes (and I'm still not entirely sure what it is, so I can't elaborate as to the details other than it tastes like pancake-ball, raspberry heaven in your mouth) it was fantastic. One suggestion: share the Ableskiver. The three pancake-like balls covered in confectioner's sugar and raspberry jam should never be consumed by one mortal. The effect is simply too powerful. Solvang is a total gem. It's definitely worth a visit and the boring drive up or down the 101, so just do it and you'll see the kind of charm that central coastal California is famous for. I think I will be back again and again. Love it here.

This is a review for only the to go window for their desserts. The aebleskivers were delicious! If you don't know what they are then you better ask somebody! Oh ok I'll tell you. Haha. They are a small round pastry resembling a pancake in taste. They are cooked in a quick amount of time. As soon as they come out nice and warm. They are sprinkled with powdered sugar with a side of raspberry jam. This pastry dish is a must have If your in Solvang.

it was Thursday so they pre-made the Æblesivers.....so we got "warm" ones. Not happy. why aren't they just made to order? i would have been fine with waiting for 10 minutes, if that meant to get warm and fresh Æblesiver's!! that is, after all, one of the reasons i came to Solvang!!

You'll love this place only if you like county food- school cafeteria. Also, the danish meatballs looked and smelled like dog food covered in gravy that looked like it was sitting out for a while. As for their special "dessert," tasted like an ordinary pancake with jam. Overall, I only rate this place a 2 just because of the location and friendly staff; otherwise, its a 1 star. Oh I have to add that I was really hungry and I STILL rated the food bad.

aebleskiver! if you're ever in the area, try the aebleskiver - ball of pancakes coated with raspberry jam and powdered sugar! moist and flavorful. also tried the medisterpolse (danish sausage) which taste like the meatballs from ikea. who doesn't love ikea food? i wonder where the nearest ikea is from solvang. guess i'll try to figure that out next time. will definitely come back again and try other things on the menu! check out the picture i posted.

Stopped in here after our first three choices were closed or out of business. It was the Abelskivar that got us in, to be honest. The food was basic diner fare, steak sandwich was bland with lower quality meat. Kids enjoyed their combo plate and fried chicken though! Giving them good reviews. Grilled chicken-eater sandwich was a bit greasy. The Ableskivar was a hit. Service was ok, prices seemed high for quality of food. But what do you expect from a tourist place?

Aebleskiver take out window! A Danish treat! What is this u may ask? I did! Well it's kinda like a Danish takoyaki ! It's like a round donut with jam and a powdered sugar . To me it was a bit dry, no flavor, and hard to eat. I did try a sausage, and that was pretty good. I would like to have tried a few other things, but this is a review only for the take out menu ...

Is there a culture in the world that does not have its version of fried dough? Sometimes, I think this fatty concoction is as ubiquitous as cops & criminals. I eagerly sped up the coast on my mission to sample the latest entree in the Dough Wars, the abelskiver from Solvang Restaurant. Having read reviews for the restaurant, I determined that my best bet was to try the aebleskivers a la carte, and as luck would have it, there is a window facing the sidewalk from which these little goodies can be purchased by themselves. This turned out to be even better for me cuz I am apparently not a fan of the abelskiver. When compared to, say, a beignet from Cafe du Monde, it is no wonder that New Orleans is kicking Solvang's butt in the Dough Wars.

Aebleskivers! That's what they specialize in at this cute little Danish diner in Solvang, California. Jim and I learned of this place via a viewing of the movie "Sideways" where they shot a scene. We just had to try these so on our way back from Santa Barbara, we stopped off here for a traditional Danish breakfast and I'm glad we did! First of all, Solvang is the cutest little town. The buildings are all built with the inspiration of Copenhagen, Denmark. It's actually the biggest Danish city in the U.S. I was really enchanted by the atmosphere and the spirit of the city. On to the meal. Very nice! I ordered the Danish omelette which is basically three eggs stuffed with Danish sausage and tilsit cheese. It also came with a side of hash browns. YUMM! But the best part was stealing one of Jim's Aebleskivers! There is really no way to describe it except that they are delicious. They sell the Aebleskivers kit right there in the restaurant or you can order it online. Gotta add this to my kitchen. Bottom line, if you ever feel the need to try something new, go here. Friendly service and great large portions. Can't go wrong!

Agreed with some of the reviews. The aebelskivers is worst than regular donuts. It taste like half way cook pancakes. Oh well I tried.

Thank goodness this place is as far away as it is - I'd be here a few times a week! Oh man that raspberry syrup is addicting with those crispy on the outside and soft on the inside aebleskivers. Somewhat reminds of pancakes except in ball form. I'm loving this! I do appreciate that they have an outdoor take out window...quick and easy. Am I going to have to stop here every time I'm up in Santa Barbara? I wonder if I use one of my super sealed pyrex dishes to pack

Came for the ableskivers and they were as delicious as I was expecting. They are very sweet and I had to get the rasberry jam after trying them because it was that delicious. We also ordered and shared the french dip sandwich which was great as well.

Excellent Danish food! The ableskivers are good and a simple treat (made with pancakes batter and raspberry sauce served as balls). I recommend you have them at least once. We brought our kids here and they loved it! The service is great and one of my favorite restaurants in Solvang. I saw a review of this place by someone who had a hot dog and didn't care for it. Why would you go to a Danish restaurant and get a hot dog (they are Kirkland brand store bought, I know this to be true as they told me). The good food here is not off of the American side of the menu, its the Danish food. Great location, walking distance from anywhere in town area. Great for breakfast or lunch.

The aebleskivers were DELICIOUS!!! I enjoyed my time here and absolutely loved the people who work here. They were very attentive and came around often; as busy as they were to make sure everyone was enjoying their food. The reuben sandwich however..wasn't that great though..it was basic bread with beef and sauerkraut. So this was something I could've made myself and won't be ordering this again. The atmosphere was very lively. People are obviously tourists when they come here so it wasn't bad. They were super duper busy though... over all I would come here again... to try other food on their menus...

Had breakfast before we made the final drive to Disneyland. Had to let my husband try some Abelskievers since he had never had them. They weren't what I remembered but it had been YEARS since I had them. We both had the eggs benedict which was tasty. My daughter had pancakes and bacon and she squeeled with delight when she saw they made her a Mickey Mouse pancake (just the beginning of the many squeels we would hear on this trip). My only complaint is that there were a lot of little fruit flies flying around. I was constantly batting them away. Other than that service was great!

Good food, fast service, low prices...family friendly...what more can you ask for? If you're in Solvang and wants some authentic Danish food, come and check it out. Their meatballs and sausages are GREAT! Don't forget to wash it all down with their famous abelskiver with ice cream....one order didn't do the justice so I had to order a second one.

  • Anna A.

Cute decor, great location, ok food, basically flavorless but maybe that's just authentic Danish style. The waitress was friendly, the line to the bathroom was long, but it was great to find a cozy place to sit down , eat and relax after a long day in Solvang.

All you need to know is this: there are Aebleskivers, and they're pretty much fantastic. The rest of the menu is OK, and it's a dependable place. Red Cabbage is really good, and I enjoyed the sausage. Overall, it's a really good place!

    (4)
  • Shannon L.

You should really, really just only come here for the balls with strawberry jam (aebleskiver) only. Everything else tastes like cafeteria food. I decided to have something simple because to be honest, everything on the menu is your regular American style food. I got the 1/4 pounder with cheese and it tasted so generic. It's not even worth writing more about! But for $8, it's a rip. Only come to Solvang for breakfast and brunch.

Aebleskivers! In Solvang, CA of all places, a traditional Danish breakfast can be found. In fact, the town itself is basically a model Danish village, but that is another review. At the Solvang restaurant, I was introduced to these most tasty delights. I was instantly taken with them. Imagine a large pancake ball about the size of a muffin, that is moist and delicious on the inside and is dotted with powdered sugar and jam on the outside -- yum! I love discovering new food, and I will now search out other places around the world that serve them. I will always thank them for converting me. The rest of my Danish breakfast was fairly good but not overwhelming and surprising like the aebleskivers. Their Danish sausage was flavorful and reminiscent of weisswurst. The Danish pancakes were exceptionally large, but a little clunky. I was not so taken with these. The service was adept and friendly. The owner was especially friendly and gregarious and had long conversations with the regulars. It felt very folksy and nice. I really liked this place. Great breakfast spot, but you will need to be selective in what you order.

food was good, Aebelskivers were delicious. The restaurant feels old and outdated, and the waitress was interesting. The bus boy was so great, always refilling our drinks and being more of a waiter than the waitress. I enjoyed the food but Red Viking is my favorite!

If your in Solvang this restaurant is a MUST. Even if your not hungry, you absolutely must try Aebelskivers. Every bite is heaven! In the even that you are hungry here are my recommendations: (I've tried the following at least once...not in one visit of course) Combination Plate Corned Beef Hash, Eggs & Hash Browns Bratwurst Sausage platter and of course Aebelskivers - With powdered sugar if your into that stuff. This restaurant really is an experience, going anywhere else is a crime if its your first time in Solvang!

The Chicken fried steak was mediocre. The gravy that came with it was bland. Hashbrown was blah. The aeberskivers tasted ok but nothing special. They tasted like they were made earlier and the reheated when we ordered them. They were not hot inside.

I have to start of with my first impression. It is 10am we walk in with about 6 other tables all at the same time, and are left sitting there for at least 10 minutes. I notice that one of the waitresses is taking her break and having breakfast. The place is now busy and we are sitting there with no service! Really a break at 10am?? Anyway, the one good thing about this place when we finally got served were the special pancakes, those were good. However, I would not go here for breakfast. I would only go for the pancakes and you can get those to go! Many other places that are way better in Solvang.

This place has amazing service and our food arrived very quickly. The Danish sausage was tasty and you won't find a better Aebleskiver than what Arnie's, eh um "Solvang Restaurant" cranks out.

Æbleskivers! My friend and I were lured by a sign on the street and were curious as to what these tasted like. We placed an order to-go and it was three donut-hole-like-pancakes topped with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. The jam was very sugary and syrupy, and I can only imagine how awesome they would be with freshly made raspberry jam. The of the texture of the Æbleskivers was light and yummy, but a little bland. It definitely needed the jam or to be filled with a fruit filling. Can't wait to try these in Denmark someday to see what an authentic version should taste like!

My buddy and I went for breakfast which was very good but the ableskievers with ice cream were fantastic. The decor was quaint. Definitely a must do when in town.

Overall food is good. Service was great, our waitress was very nice and helpful. Meatballs and sausage were ok. Veggies chewy. Fries dry and saltless. Coleslaw good. Philly steak good. Open face sandwich good. Burgers good.

When in Solvang...one must try the Aebleskiver! So, Velkommen! I haven't been to Solvang in years, so when travelling down the 101 back to LA, a group of friends and I decided to make a pit stop in the mini Scandinavian city of Solvang. If you don't where it is...Google it. I'm only here to review the restaurant! While walking around, we stop in front of the (famous?) Solvang Restaurant, which happens to be Home of Arne's Famous Aebleskiver. What the heck is an aebleskiver? And who is Arne? Before I get into that, let me start from the beginning. This restaurant has friendly staff, but the restaurant itself looks like a small Denny's diner. Nothing fancy, and I couldn't even tell you if it had Scandinavian decor? Anyway, for my meal, I had to try the Danish meatball, sausage and red cabbage plate. It was served with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. It wasn't anything memorable, and lacked seasoning, but again, I just had to try it! Okay, now on to the Aebleskiver. I'm not going to go into the history of the Vikings and Braves in Vinlandia...just that basically, it's a round donut ball covered in powdered sugar and raspberry jam. It's pretty good, but not anything great or worth having to come back to get more. I gave this place 3 stars because...I'm nice. And well, maybe because the Aebleskiver made up for the bland entree. Again, wait staff was nice, but next time I'm in Solvang, I'll choose to eat elsewhere.

Wow, this place was packed.......New Years Day! Service was good and food was good. It is a nice place to try Scandinavian food. Definitely the place to try while in Solvang.

Another Greyhound gathering, another opportunity to eat some Abelskivers. Get them a la mode, what a treat.

These Aebleskiver are yummy. Eat when hot otherwise it swings to nasty really quick. Lots of benches outside to sit and eat so you do not need to eat in the restaurant. :D Oh and you can also ask for the jam to be on the side. Try it if you are in Solvang!

This place was pretty good - I came here on a Monday for a late breakfast before leaving town - I really wanted to try this place because they're famous for their aebelskievers. I had an omelet with spinach and mushrooms - quite tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. The aebelskievers were pretty good - not really what I expected though. I read somewhere while researching the town that they are "filled pancakes" I guess I didn't quite understand what that meant. I thought there was a filling inside the little pancake ball, but it turns out it just means that it's a little pancake ball filled with just pancake. They are topped with a raspberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The raspberry jam is to die for! I will probably only come back here for the aebelskivers.

I like coming here when we go to Solvang for wine tasting. They have a dish that is egg over steak burger with Rothkol (purple cabbage).

Long line. Coffee was pretty weak. The only thing I like about this place is the Belgian waffle!

Went here for breakfast our first morning and had to try the Æbleskiver and Danish Sausage. Overall it seemed really touristy, there is a walk up window to get Æbleskivers to go, but we enjoyed them inside. It seems everywhere sells Æbleskiver, but this place it "famous" for them so we paid a little extra to have them here. We were a little less than impressed, and probably would not have them again.

saw the long line and yelped it. The aebleskiver where ok... i wouldn't go back.

I know that it isn't Solvang Restaurant's fault that the town was overrun by bees. However, I'm allergic to bees- not in the "I'm going to die" way, but in the "I need to get to an urgent care center within a day" kind of way. So, after I ordered my aebleskiver and was immediately attacked by bees, I ran back inside the place and asked if I could eat my food there. The host was very rude about it. There are a couple of ways to say something to get the same message across. Instead of saying, "sure, why don't you sit at our bar", he said, "No, you can't sit there or there. You have to sit at the bar." Yes, the aebleskivers were good (probably 3 stars worthy), but I dont want to purchase something from someone who doesn't want me there.

Just walking by, minding my own business...but seeing the Aebleskiver line winding outside the restaurant caught my attention. Hello Aebleskiver! 1.5 Aebleskivers later, I'm sold (bought 3 but had to share). Reminds me of a funnel cake with the powered sugar and jelly only that it's shaped into a ball but equally delicious. Considering the long line; service is relatively fast and friendly.

    (4)
  • Kaaren D.

Sis and I stopped in recently on our way to Cambria, and tried breakfast again. The service was friendly, quick, and the aebleskivers were hot, sweet and covered in jam and powdered sugar. Almost too sweet to eat.

The Aebelskiver is what it is all about. I have been coming to Solvang for years and years. Ever since I was 5 years old my family has taken yearly trips to this small danish town. Although over the years many things about this city has changed there are two things that remain the same. First is all the tourist that over crowd the streets and come in groups to take pictures in front of windmills. And the second thing is the awesomeness of the Aebelskiver. This little pancake ball with powdered sugar and jam always makes my trip worth while. I have eaten at the Restaurant but it is nothing worth writing home about. It is just as good as a Denny's or IHOP. If you find yourself in Solvang being frustrated by all the pic taking tourists then mosey on down to this place and get an Aebelskiver. They will make you happy for a minute or two

My boyfriend and I stop here every time we make a trip up North. We even take the long way just so we can stop by Solvang Restaurant. It's a small, quiet place with friendly staff. If you come here there's no way you can leave without trying the abelskivers... beyond delicious. Pancake- like balls with powdered sugar and jam. I like to eat them with an over easy egg & sausage.. trust me you will dream about this delectable trio after having it just once. ;)

Famous for their aebleskivers! Dine in or order it to go. You must try it at least once if you're ever in Solvang. Its kind of like a pancake ball with fillings and powdered sugar. I've eaten breakfast here and it has been pretty good.

OK, it's a tradition. Any time I'm in Solvang, I have to eat at Arne's. Usually more than once. Today is Sunday February 17th, and due to the three day weekend, it was unusually crowded here for this time of year. Had to wait 10 minutes to be seated, but got a great table up front for my wait. My Sweetheart had the herring, I opted for the mixed sausages. I really wanted the Aebleskivers as well (if you've never had them, you're missing something!), but it's more of a morning thing for me (which will be great about 9 AM tomorrow!). Service was rapid once we got seated, accurate, and the food was delicious, as usual. I've been eating at Arne's Solvang Restaurant for years, and have never been disappointed. The staff is extremely personable despite the fast-paced atmosphere. Great varieties on the menu, and prices won't break the bank (taking into account that Solvang is a touristy-town, it's pretty much in line). Update: Walked right in for breakfast this morning; the staff was just as friendly, and remembered us from the previous day. Lori was sweet and attentive and made our visit even better. The Aebleskivers were fabulous, and the medisterpolse were wonderful. This was a first-time taste for my wife, who agreed they were great; which will make my promptings of wanting to return again soon that much easier.

There was a pretty short line to get the Aebleskivers today so I guess we got lucky. I am not sure if it is more fun to watch them being made or to eat them. You get 3 balls (yes, I said balls....I wonder if they give you 3 so it seems less dirty....) of dough with raspberry jam & powdered sugar. You can ask them not to include either of the toppings if you don't want them. I personally think they would be yummy with some chocolate drizzled on them but I am a chocoholic......

*** This review is for the Abelskivers only *** PROS: + Abelskivers! CONS: - Quality of Abelskivers can vary I seldom come to Solvang and not get abelskivers, which are a spherical Scandinavian pancake served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. The texture and mouth feel are very much like regular flapjack pancake. Where the abelskiver comes out ahead is in the spherical shape. The spherical shapes allow for excellent heat retention and gives the fluffy batter an opportunity to become almost cake-like in the center of the sphere. If you're in Solvang the abelskivers are not to be missed, trust me.

    Gross and disgusting food.

    (1)
  • Amanda S.

Dis-GUSTING. First of all, they microwave the food. Secondly, they brought me a dirty spoon. Lastly, we ordered the Sausage Sampler and the Danish Meatball and Sausage plate and it was gross. Not to mention, there was something stringy in the mashed potatoes. For what they charge they shouldn't be microwaving anything.

I was in Solvang Restaurant for breakfast today, and I've gotta say, I'm impressed. I had my first ever Aebelskievers (spell check dude, seriously) and they were nothing crazy awesome, but they certainly did not disappoint. And they came out so flippin fast, I couldn't even believe it. Our server was a little sweetie pie. Solvang restaurant looks a lot like a Danish IHOP, so I thought for sure all the servers would be surly truck-stop types. Thankfully such is not the case. While I'm sure there may be better Aebelskievers out there, but this place has neat little articles on the history of the culture (and the aebelskiever) on the menu. And with a filling breakfast for 2 coming out to $13 and some change, it's totally worth a stop in.

1 MEATBALL 1 SAUSAGE, some microwaved veggies, $12+?? Kind of disappointed on the meal as well. Everything tasted like microwaved defrosted. We ordered the aebleskivers which is known as their" Raspberry Balls" 3 little pancake battered balls showered with powder sugar and raspberry jam for $3.60. That's over $1 each that just didn't have any taste or flavor to it if eaten without the powder sugar and jam. Even Donut holes tastes better in my opinion. Well aside from the food, service wasn't all that as well. Especially after witnessing 2 employees yelling at each other because of turning the air conditioning temperature up or down, everything just seemed to be a turn off.

This review is for the Aebelskivers only. Fluffy, large, amazingly delicious Danish pancakes. Aebelskivers are my secret obsession. I love my Aebelskiver pan at home and have made glorious delights (I recently made pumpkin and maple ones). However, when in Solvang you MUST try these. Drenched in wonderful (and sticky) raspberry jam and powdered sugar. And only $3 for 3 of them? A great street snack!

    (5)
  • Maribel M.

I don't know if my expectations were way too high because I was left wanting to try aebelskivers the first time I came to Solvang (or because people rave about them here on Yelp), but actually having them was a letdown. The aebelskivers taste like balls of pancake (not great pancakes), topped with okay raspberry jelly and powdered sugar. Yes, they are definitely fresh, but just disappointing in our opinion. An order of 3 is only $3.25, so it's worth giving them a try. I just know that if I'm ever back, I'll more than likely pass.

    (2)
  • Lisa S.

I got the quintessential Solvang treat...the abelskievers. I forgot what they were called & started callin' em laberkuken. lol They're pretty good & basically 3 pancake balls with confectioner's sugar and the best jam I've ever tasted. It would be nothing without that jam. On a side note, the lady had the personality of a brillo pad. Pretty rough.

    (3)
  • Diane S.

Food was just so-so. Aebleskiver - was ok, but also wish they'd sell them in 1s instead of 3s - too much dough for just me! It wasn't the best thing ever, to be honest. More of a gimmick than an actual delight. Prefer popovers and other types of pastry with jam, given the opportunity. These tend to line your stomach quickly. Also had regular breakfast here, and food was very greasy spoon-ish. Nothing to write home about (in fact, could get the same meal minus the Aebleskiver at home for far less $).

  • Anna W.

Solvang is a really cute city to visit. If you are here you should have some aebleskivers! Aebleskivers are Raspberry Balls. We order it directly found the window outside and it's really cheap, fast and yummy. We order one set with ice cream and another without. I think the ice cream is totally worth it. I recommend you try it, it's a local favor and it's pretty good.

Everytime I go by Solvang this is the place that I MUST stop by to eat me some of them Aebleskivers! I've tried some elsewhere, but personally Solvang Restaurant has the best ones yet!

  • Marilyn B.

What can I say? Well, a lot actually. If I were solely writing this review on the aebleskivers, it would TOTALLY be 5 stars. They are tasty, just like the postcard we sent to my father-in-law promised. And Solvang is such a quaint town, that its cuteness deserves a good review. However... The service was mediocre. Our server didn't seem to smile as much when she was at our table. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Danish sausage (a bit too mild, and the mustard tasted like it was cut with mayo). We ordered a side of Danish sausage each, and they literally bring out one sausage on a plate with a plastic tub of mustard. I suppose that is just what it sounds like, though. The craziest thing was that, after we paid, my husband was accused of stealing. Seriously. After we finished eating our breakfast of Danish sausage and Aebleskivers, my husband and I proceeded to take out the 3 postcards we had purchased the day before at a toy store across the street. He was addressing one to his dad, the one that has the lovely picture of aebleskivers on the front - and actually recommends getting them at this very restaurant! On the way out the door, this older woman in an argyle sweater addresses my husband: Argyle Sweater Saleswoman: Excuse me, sir? Hubs: Yes? ASS: Um, did you pay for your postcards? Hubs: Yes, we bought these yesterday. ASS: (more condescending now) You already had a postcard with aebleskivers on the front? Hubs: Well, yeah, your store is not the only one in all of Solvang that sells postcards. ASS: (not really satisfied) Okay... Hubs: Why would I steal your postcards? At this point, I was out the door and walking down the street. I didn't feel like being harassed by this crotchety old woman who actually believed that my 28-year-old husband and I would pay for our meal and then try to cheat her restaurant out of $0.75! And how bold would we have to be to not only steal them, but also write to our families on them while still in the restaurant?! Outrageous. Hence fewer stars than I would've given. My recommendation: If you really want to try their pastries, use the take out window. Then you don't have to leave a tip, either.

I was hungry. They were open. I ate. Here's the thing, pretty much everything in Solvang rolls up and closes early. This place is no exception. I can't remember if they closed at 4pm or 5pm .. whatever the case, I was there one hour before closing. I'm lucky I got my sandwich. As for the sandwich, I got a Reuben. It was okay, nothing spectacular. A little light on the corned beef if you ask me. After taking my order, my waitress was off shift, so I ended up asking the bus boy for more coffee and some Aebleskiver's. My pancake balls never came and the place was emptying out. Bus boy suggested I just pay my check up at the register and get some Aebleskiver's to go. Yeah. That was gonna happen. Not.

the meat ball is good but not too much food selection. I wish there's more danish style dishes. The service is ok. I didn't like that the waitress bring up my Danish desert when I am only half way into eating my entree. The Danish desert should be eat immediately because it's warm. So I had to rush thru my main course to eat the desert. the desert is ok. the small ball with strawberry jam , one is under cooked. If you go there, not let them know that you are ordering the desert until you are ready to eat it.

I've been coming to this place every time i visit Solvang. Whether it be to cycle 50 miles in November or 100 miles in March the food here is incredible. The same owner has been there since i was a kid and he keeps some of the friendliest waitresses and cooks to serve you very well. The Æbleskiver is AMAZING! and since i only go there for breakfast its a must to have even if you're coming in for eggs and a glass of water. YOU CANT LEAVE WITHOUT HAVING ONE! Im so looking forward to going up there soon.

Three stars for fabulous aebelskivers, quality service and delightful ambience. Plus they are one of the few breakfast places in the state of California that open before 8am on the weekend. The food is okay and reasonably priced.

We had recommendations to come here for the abelskiver, which were described to use as "raspberry balls." We went up to the window and curiously got one order of the abelskiver and also a Danish sausage, which you can get without a bun. The abelskiver tasted like it was made of a pancake batter. It's baked, but the outside is well buttered and crisp, with the the inside doughy and fluffy. I actually preferred it with just powdered sugar and without the overly sweet raspberry sauce, but to each her own. The sausage was nothing too special.. just a regular fennel sausage for about $3. We sat on a bench on the side, only to realize that the streets are filled with bees that flock to the sweet raspberry sauce, no matter where you go, so I'd recommend sitting inside to enjoy your food.

Good place. Food and service was fine. Got abelskivers and enjoyed the unique treat. Variety sandwiches of roast beef, cheese, etc, was nice. Service is okay and the decor is charming. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch and/or if you only have time to visit just one or two restaurants to visit in this town.

One word: AEBLESKIVER! The danish delight was tasty here. Jam and powdered sugar. YUM! My gf and I came here for a late breakfast/early lunch. She had a sandwich with turkey, sun dried tomatoes, and tilsit cheese. It was pretty good and I'm not a huge sun dried tomatoes kinda fan. My gf thought it was better than ok. Service was a tiny bit on the slow side... wouldn't blame them cause they were kinda busy. The 5th star (and takeout box checked) is for the front window where you can order aebleskivers to enjoy on the street (although a flimsy plate).

Home of Arne's Famous Aebleskiver I wish they'd sell them one by one rather than in three's but I only complain because we were way full from breakfast to eat all 3. It's nice that they have a little window outside to purchase. No need to go inside, get seated, order, wait and all that jazz just for these little guys. WHAM, BAM, order and JAM! The aebleskivers themselves were a tad too sweet because they were drenched in jam but otherwise they were quite fluffy and reminded me of the Japanese red bean fish. Yum. Eat Aebleskivers - check!

    (3)
  • Jennifer C.

I've only tried their Aebleskiver. Its like mini golf ball sized pancake fluff with raspberry jam and powered sugar. The are about $3 for 3 so can't complain about the price! (and they accept credit cards outside!)

  • Kelly W.

This is for the outside take out window for aebleskivers. Oh boy...this was the first time I have had these and they are FANTASTIC. They were so fresh and just melted in our mouths! You can be sure that I will coming by here every time that I'm in the area!!!

My mom was on a mission to find aebelskivers. While walking down one of the many streets, we came across the Solvang Restaurant which had a little window to just buy aebelskivers. They usually come with jelly and sugar but we opted for just sugar. They were still warm inside and delicious. Fluffy and just melted in your mouth. This was our first taste of aebelskivers and I hope to make it back there someday to have some more.

Cruising into Solvang on its main road was akin to the scene in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy cruises into Munchkin Land and the screen goes from B&W to technicolor. Except we weren't greeted by dwarves, we were greeted by white people. Hordes upon gaggles of white people as far as the eye could see. It was the largest collection of the lanky, pasty creatures that I had seen since my buggy broke down in Holland Michigan. There is alot of culture in San Francisco, But trying to find Scandinavian or Germanic culture is likely to put your lederhosen in a bunch. And if you do find them they will most likely be selling out with a huge bowl of Pho in front of them. The little village of Solvang was by far the most authentic displaced nook of Europe I that have ever seen with my Nordic blues. Tudor houses lined the lazy streets while terra cotta roofs and windmills loomed overhead. We made a bee line for Solvang restaurant only stopping for minute as we neared so I could marvel at the store that had forty types of knee high stockings displayed in the window. (That fetish is about the only thing that could distract me from the flaky treat I was about to shovel in to my gaping maw) The pickup window to the Solvang Restaurant opened up a view into the kitchen where properly dressed milk maids scooped dollops of rich batter into a pan that resembles an egg crate. A video playing on the TV screen that faced into the street reenacted the arduous process that was in live action three feet to the right. The pastry technician (yes that is the new PC term for them) folded layer after layer of sweet runny dough into the pan turning the slowly forming the empty craters into perfectly round crusty balls (normally I would have that checked) which I came to learn are called Aebelkivers. Once my balls were rationed into their carrier the technician poured generous amounts of raspberry syrup and powdered sugar on to them until they were saturated with sweetness. Would I like ice cream with them? Um, hell yes ma'am. The next few minutes were a blur but when I came up for air my mouth was rimmed in syrup and my clothes were dusted in white powder reminding me of a wrestling match I had in a Las Vegas hotel room with some strippers and a kilo of Columbia's finest. (Mental note, next time eat aebelskivers downwind) I have no experience with any of the other food at the restaurant but these balls are by far the one of the best pastries that I can attest to. Take it from me, the 242nd whitest person in Solvang.

We usually always have breakfast here & the service has never been really good. Well this trip, I think they must have read all the reviews on Yelp cause everyone was happy, friendly & smiling it was really a very enjoyable stop. Our breakfast was the average eggs, bacon & aebleskivers. But for some reason the aebleskiver was not as good as it use to be. I did pick up the mix (already have the pan) & will make these at home. All in all a much nicer place this time around!

Wow just as I remembered from over 30 years ago. My parents would bring us to the restaurant for the Æbleskivers. I treated my wife to a childhood memory today. And wow she fell in love with the Æbleskivers. I may be a bit one sided about my five stars but the place was great and the staff on top of it. If you have never had an Æbleskiver you should stop in and try them. Tell them Mike sent you, they won't remember me but try it anyways.

Good Danish sausage sandwich, my wife liked the chili, kids grilled cheese was grilled cheese- it's pretty hard to f it up. It's all about the aebelskivers. Damned good. I can't believe how many people walk up to the window and ask what they are... and then WALK AWAY without trying them. Morons.

We went in just to try the aebelskivers. The aebelskivers were to die for: fresh off the stove...nice and warm. Great flavor--it was sooo delicious. Next time I will order it with ice cream. My only disappointment was that we didn't know that they served breakfast here--we would have eaten here instead! We are definitely coming back!

I have lived in the SYV for 32 years and hold this place high in my book. I just now (10:30~Breakfast rush time) called an order in for pick up and the nice owner Jim was GREAT and efficient. My food was ready in 10 minutes- I arrived and the line was out the door, tables and booths were full- wait staff and kitchen was hustling. The corn beef and hash plate is great and my Denver omelette with avocado was the best I've had anyplace here in Solvang. Serving sizes are just right and we can learn from this restaurant on NOT over eating. Really, I send everyone to this place and not PAULAS PANCAKES house- That restaurant doesn't even hold a match light to this little jewel. Visit this place and leave with a full belly of delicious food and a happy experience with all the hard workers there. Last note- yes the Abelskeivers are A_W_E_S_O_M_E here.

The first thing you need to do is adjust your culinary expectations to diner standards. The next thing...gorge on aebleskivers! What is an aebleskiver, you ask? Well, it's sort of a doughnut, but it's not. It's sort of a pancake, but it's not. It's sort of like cake, but it's not. It IS a delectable Danish delight...and, it earned this place an extra star! (Warning: The sugar high will last about 2 hours...make sure you're near another eatery when you crash.) I dined here about four times on my recent visit to Solvang. I was hanging with locals who come here ("The Office") daily, so I got red carpet service. The interior decor is cute Danish diner-esque.

Had a great lunch - just what I had in mind from this kind of homey throw-back. I had the combo plate with one danish sausage, one swedish meatball, cabbage (YUM!) specially prepared, and mashed potatoes. My mom got sausage and tilsit cheese on a croissant with potato salad. We, of course, finished with aebleskiver!! Amazing. Just the cutest little waiter, too - I had him last time I was here and he was just as good and friendly this time - I want to eat HIM!!

Aebleskiver. It's pronounced, "aebleskiver." They actually have a little pronunciation guide and history on the menu if you opt to eat indoors. We had sandwiches. That was before we polished it all off with 2 orders of the aebleskiver. 1 order= 3 balls of delicious goodness. This is reason alone to visit Solvang. Well, one of three reasons. Reason 2: Wine tasting. It's unavoidable here. So, just do it. Reason 3: You haven't taken pictures of the "cuteness" of it all. Most other places will announce that they sell ableskiver. I'm sure they do. I just haven't tried it from them. THIS place not only sells cooked abelskiver, they also sell all the things you need to make it back home... Like you'll ever make it when you get home. ha.

The Solvang Restaurant is like entering fantasy land at Disneyland - its a very cute restaurant. Well, most of Solvang is like fantasy land at Disneyland. This is the place for breakfast! The aebleskivers are covered in raspberry syrup-y goodness and powdered sugar. If you haven't had aebleskivers yet, this is where you need to go! Oh and the other breakfast items are good too. I recommend getting the egg combo with the corned beef hash.

The aebleskivers looked delicious from the window. Next thing I know, I'm eating a pancake ball with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. It was warm and soft but it was seriously just pancake batter in the shape of a ball.

The food here is awful and overpriced. I came here with my family based off the good reviews and I was utterly disappointed. The abelskivers were too dense and the jam was artificial tasting. We also shared the fish & chips and shrimp & chips which were bland. The split pea soup tasted like manure. The sausage was nothing special and the open face meatball sandwich was skimpy. The bill came out to $50 and we were still hungry. I wish I did more research and found another restaurant.

I took my son here just so he could try the aebleskivers. They were good but we didn't order anything else.

Aebelskivers were good but the food was average. Don't expect an exclusive Danish meal here.

Coming into Solvang Restaurant for the famous Aebleskivers is like going to New Orleans and looking for a po' boy sandwich. You can literally find them everywhere, so why just go to one place? Aebleskivers are literally every where you turn in this little Danish town. Which is really nice to visit and really small in size. The three stars is a result of the other factors. Because really, the Aebleskivers are damn right delicious, but we have to factor more into a review than just one meal. The danish meatball was.. interesting, in that it was much like any other meatball. Not sure what caused it to be a Danish one. The place looks extremely touristy. It feels that way too. I suppose everyone is mesmerized by the fact that they get the post card that shows them as the famous place for it and show up here. You'll see people of all walks of life, but they all look like tourist coming in here. Got a Danish meatball and Danish sausage plate. Was smaller than I expected, the food was pretty decent. But then again it was drenched in gravy. I think you can drench cardboard in gravy and make it delicious.I'm sure you can ask one of my friends and he'll ask for extra gravy.. Service was spotty and it wasn't even that busy. So I'm not sure why it took so long to get the check, don't they know I have wineries to visit? Even more troubling was that my glass of water had some strange flakes/crumbs in it or the ice machine had something up with it. Check your water before consuming. Over all, I wasn't wowed and I'm sure any other place that isn't "famous" for it's aebleskiver will give you just as delicious little pancake balls without having the window in the front of it. Not to mention that with the right amount of googling and the the proper cooking gear, you can make amazing Aebleskivers at home that are stuffed with your own favorite cream or other related items. Maybe perhaps some amazing Pumpkin cream cheese your lady picked out at Bristol farms? I think so.

Aebleskivers..! I say no more. You can't go to Solvang and not stop by to get your set of Aebleskivers you have to or you will regret it! The breakfast is also very good at this place so try the Danish THIN pancakes. Yes .. they are thin but NOT small so brace yourself for a big breakfast! The service is also great so you can't go wrong and if you're in a hurry just pop in the little window and grab your Aebleskivers!

Have eaten here several times over the years. Last time we were there we had a snack -- abelskivers, to which we had the ice cream add-on. Delicious. Service was fast and friendly, and the price for the abelskiver + ice cream was reasonable.

We decided to check this place out since Huell. Howser had been there on his "Road Trip" show and we wanted some aebleskivers. aebleskivers were OK. but all the gnats in the restaurant and on the wall grossed me out.

Tasted like a non-deep fried pancake donut with jam on top. The jam is what makes this yummy. Not too sweet and three hit the spot for one person. So good my friend and I each shoveled one whole ball into our mouth. I was tempted to buy another order but as soon as we finished the line grew to out the door..

I have been here many times in my life time. We used to stop here for aebelskivers en route to grandma's house as a kid. It was about time to swing by here and introduce SG to Solvang and aebelskivers. It was a very busy day in Solvang. People walking everywhere and the line for the aebelskiver window at least 15 people long. But we were headed into the restaurant to sit and have lunch before the treasured dessert. I did not bother to Yelp it, but probably should have. I may have considered eating somewhere else and then waiting in the line. Instead, we were seated right away inside. We looked through the limited menu and decided on fish and chips and a combo Danish Sausage and Meatball with mashed potatoes and veggies. Both came with soup and salad. The split pea soup was average, not as good as mine. The salad was just iceberg, with a splash of vinegar and oil. My fish was deeply fried and tasted good, but nothing special. The fries were puny but dunked in ketchup, tasted fine. Our service was just average. Our waitress had not much personality. She did stay on top of my quickly drained iced tea. She even brought our bill before we could ask for an order of aebelskivers. Hello, push the signature dessert. The food was quite pricey for the amount and quality of the food. Now my separate aebelskiver review, though I can't change my overall review of the restaurant. 5 stars all the way for the aebelskivers. Those round donut/pancake balls with the raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Yum Yum Yum! I love them so much that I have a pan to make them at home. This place is the best place to get these, not even sure if anyone else makes them. If you are in Solvang, come to the outdoor window and order some of these. They are the perfect Solvang Treat!

I'm giving this restaurant 2 stars only because of their famous aebelskivers. (I still think I"m being generous) I enjoyed them! They are pancake balls served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. I bought a plate (3 on a plate) and shared with family. (We actually enjoyed these little yummys prior to eating at the restaurant as a snack when we first got to Solvang) I yelped this one and also went here on a friend's recommendation. We had a 25 min wait and was hopeful that it was a good sign of good food coming our way. We dined inside for lunch. I ordered the Combo plate Saugage and Meatball. If this is scandanavian food, I"m not ever going to eat it again. It was bland/tasteless. I was soooooo surprised and disappointed in this place. This plate costed $12.99 (not too cheap) The mashed potatoes that came with my meal tasted like school cafeteria potatoes and the side veggies were frozen for sure!! It also came with what was supposed to be gravy. It was thin and not much of it. (Like they stood back and drizzled it over my plate. Oh yea, and again, it was pretty tasteless. I don't think I've ever eaten at a restaurant this disappointing. I don't understand how this place got rated as well as it did. No one at my table enjoyed their food. Stunned at the quality and flavor of this place.

Stopped by Solvang the other day and be a tourist all over again, thought it would be nice to actually find a local tourist restaurant and experience that Danish culture closest to the heart, which is the belly. Yelped a little on my phone and this place came up, although the star value isn't that high, but still decided to give it a try. It turns out that Solvang restaurant isn't that traditionally Danish but a fusion between American diner with Danish influenced dish. The place is decorated in a Northern European style and the booths and chairs are made of wood with some art work much like the que line of Matterhorn at Disneyland. :P Thus we sat down into a booth, glance through the menu and picked the most Danish thing we can ever come accross. I personally ordered a Danish Sausage Combo, it comes with a bratwurst, meatball, steamed veggie and some red cabbage sauerkraut. The portion looks more on the small side but it does full you up if you're not crasily starving. Their signature dessert is the famous Aebleskivers. It is pretty much waffle in a ball form with some raspberry sauce topping and powerdered sugar. Personally I wasn't impressed with the taste, and there's nothing really special about it. But what the heck, if you come to Solvang as a tourist it is required for you to touch base and do those "been there done that" kindda activity, order the Aebleskivers! So you can say your own yay and nay from a personal perspective. So after all, I do recomend this restaurant, but only to those who are sight seeing in Solvang and those who eager to experience. To me Solvang Restaurant isn't some place you come keep coming back to, but a place perfect for a first time experience.

I cant give this place two stars because I haven't "experienced better" because this was the first time I've had an aebleskiver. It was just "Ok". Nothing really to be excited about. Its basically pancake dough cooked in a shape of an egg served with strawberry preserves and powdered sugar. I may have received a old batch because my aebleskiver was luke warm and didn't tast fresh. I just ate one and threw the rest away. I don't think I would come back.

Ahhhhh gotta love Solvang for the food and Solvang Restaurant is a must if you're visiting! Yes, the ABLESKEEVERS are delicious! We couldn't wait to enjoy this as a dessert so we asked for it before our meals! :) They're like pancake balls but just better! My mom ordered the corned beef sandwich which was grilled to perfection. My husband got the sausage/meatball combo which I think he liked since his plate was completed clean at the end of our meal. And me, I settled for the hot dog and a tasty hot dog it was! The crunchy onion strings really do make it taste yummier! Prepare to wait a little bit during peak hours/days but the food service is quick and will totally be worth it! :)

Mmmmm warm raspberry sauce covered balls in my mouth... SOOOOO GOOD! That was all I ate from here when I went to Solvang, but they get 5 stars for that because they were freakin fantastic... But you don't have to take my word for it...

If you're coming here for a meal, don't. I came for lunch looking for a Dutch meal and was very disappointed. I could make something twice as good at home in 5 minutes with a microwave. All the food was dry and didn't have much flavor. I would not recommend coming here and will not come back again.

I agree with lynn c. here. this is also my first danish place and the worst place I've eaten at. The food was overpriced and it lacks any favor or taste. Seriously, how can a restaurant charge $10 dollars for just crackers and ham! I cant recommend this place to anyone. I seriously think this place should not exist :/ authentic danish pastry- abelskivers was the only thing i can muster to eat here. wow?! McDonalds does a better job than this place.

3.5 stars. I love Solvang for giving SoCal something kitsch and European-esque (read: old school), although I never saw any windmills in Copenhagen when I was there ;) Anyway, I was longing for great danish pastries in this town and some good bacon (no American bacon ain't good), but alas Solvang let me down. I found better stuff at my local farmer's market. And this restaurant let me down too. Is Danish food really meatballs and sausage with sauerkraut? If it then give me more gravy. Solvang Restaurant's version of danish food looked as good as the other places I looked at, and it has the crazy line for take-away aebelskiver doughnuts too (which are delicious). The waitress we had was efficient in a jaded kinda way, but helpful. If I came to town again I'd try another restaurant - I want a bit more love and attention to my food and decor, but I'd get their aebelskiver a la mode! That's unbeatable.

this place is awesome. cute quaint little place. we were seated immediately- which i think we were jsut lucky on- cos soon after we seated- we noticedit got pretty packed and there were people waiting outside to be seated- so yay us! :) i got a meatball tilsit cheese crosant sandwich... DELISH! the potato salad was a bit "meh" though. nothgin particulay fantastic about it. my hubby got the same thing, but instead of meatball- he got suasage. this i thought was good too, but i liked my meatball sandwich better. he got fries- i snuck some off his plate and i kind of wish i woud've gottenthe fries over my potato salad- but eh! oh well! by the time we were done with our meal- we ha dno space for hte little fried desserts they are known for- the aebleskivers! as we left- we noticed a teeange girl int eh window making them- they looked so tasty... i regret not saving my tums for that. maybe once i have those- i can give this place 5 stars. :) i'm also giving this place for some super cute decorative paltes depicting cute littel danish cartoons on them- found on the wall shelf up on the right as you walk towards the bathroom- they were just so cute!!! :) i'm defintiely going back! :)

After a bad experience at a pancake house on the main road, I went to this place and have to say... They were great. Wonderful service. Great food (we were not disappointed with the dishes we ate). Very nice presentation and the price can't be beat. There Aebleskiver (a kind of pancake shaped into a ball with a strawberry syrup topping) was real tasty (there is a nice history about this pastry treat) and I happen to be in the mood for a beer (Awesome Danish beer). Jeffrey the Owner was a warm host. I had to wait a little bit, but when seats were available for the 3 of us, he had us seated right away. Next time I'm in town, I plan to come back here again.

Best Aebleskivers outside of Denmark hands-down! A long drive from Los Angeles, but visiting this cute town and this restaurant makes it worth it. (Ok, ok, staying at nearby Santa Barbara doesn't hurt either!) I make both sweet and savory Aebelskivers at home, but I *cannot* get them to be this big, light and fluffy on the inside and a beautiful marbled pancake-batter-camerilization on the outside. That raspberry sauce it comes with is a wonderful accompaniment. It does make me wonder and wish they would take the best thing in the restaurant and build it up to more. At home I've made a few of these. How about Apple Aebleskivers, Peach Aebleskivers, Strawberry Aebleskivers and Blueberry Aebleskivers? How about taking a walk on the wild side and stuffing them with breakfast sausage Aebleskivers.. or cubes of Swiss Cheese and Black Forrest Ham stuffed inside? The rest of the restaurant? ...well, it's all plays second fiddle to their little puffy stars. I hope one day we'll see multiple sweet and savory choices for these lovely, little Aebleskivers gems.

This was the best smoerrebroed, open faced sandwiches, we had while in Solvang, It was served on a croissant which is not authentic but was yummy, the food was tasty and seemed fresh. We both liked the coffee and the service was excellent. They also had a small selection of danish jam, Den Gamle Fabrik, so I stocked up. The sandwiches was served with red cabbage, a small pickle and a red beet, and I LOVED the them, they were just like at home, I would have loved for more beets on my plate! The place is cute, decorated with old danish sayings and murals, i spent a long time having fun translating them to my husband. This place was my favorite in solvang The aebleskiver was okay, a little big and served with too much jam, it had a funny aftertaste but was definitely worth trying. I was excited to find that the owners name was danish but then bummed out when he couldn't actually speak danish. He did say that a bunch of people from Solvang are going to Denmark next year for the anniversary of Solvang, hopefully they'll learn ways to improve their foods.

ok.. for the food.. I'd give it almost "zero" stars.. but for the Ebelskivers.. its a great place to go. I make these bad boys at home and although good.. I've yet to match the excellence put out at Solvang!. I'd go just for the Ebelskivers.. the food.. take a pass!

This place is on the verge of being a tourist trap. The service is sub-par, and their overall Dutch authenticity is questionable. The food was okay, but was basically tossed on the plate with no effort or presentation. I've eaten here twice to give it a chance, but got the same experience both times. The size or quality of my entree both times did NOT match the high prices. While I understand they are extremely busy and tailor to mostly tourists year-round, I definitely got the feeling I was at a theme park eatery, not a small town restaurant. Unfortunately, if I had a better place to offer in Solvang I would, but I had similar experiences at two other eateries. I recommend a short trip to Santa Ynez or Los Alamos for restaurants if you have the time!

We were in Solvang for 2 days and wanted to try Danish food so hit the Solvang Restaurant. Danish food is interesting is all I can say. It wasn't bad, just different. We had the open face sandwich platter and a Danish hotdog. The sandwiches are not your typical sandwich, the rye bread is a sliver with meat and traditional Danish toppings.....interesting. The hotdog was tasty and my husband said the Danish mustard was very good. Aebleskivers for desert, which were quite tasty. We were completely full all day and skipped dinner. Great service and friendly staff.

This review is solely for the aebleskivers, which are delicious! One can order these amazing aebleskivers from the outside take-out window. Yes, there is always a line outside but it's worth the wait. Aebleskivers are warm pancake balls served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar.

the greats: danish sausage... which led to our getting the... sausage platter... (sausages come with their delicious house made sweet mustard) our waiter (fun, spunky kid) the goods: aebelskivers (like everyone else says)

Alrighty! This place is actually pretty good compared to some of the fare around. I was disappointed that the menu didn't have a huge variety of Danish food, but it was there nevertheless. I ordered the combination and received one sausage, one meatball, and some Danish red cabbage. Red cabbage is a favorite of mine and it was all gone at the end of the meal. The meat was very tasty, although I felt like the sausage was a bit bland. I'd definitely come here again!

Hot and fresh aebleskivers dripping with raspberry jam served outside a cute store front? How could you resist? Aebleskivers are simple enough. Don't let the tongue-tying name fool you. It's basically just a spherical pancake. The ones at Solvang Restaurant are served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar, and you can get them a la mode for a few extra bucks. The aebleskivers are dense, and you never bite into a rogue air pocket. There's always a line for them, so they're always made fresh. Overall, it's a cute experience. I always get them when I'm in Solvang, but I never make two trips in a day. It's just a "hey, I'm in Solvang today!" kind of ritual.

This review is for for their aebleskivers stand only. Conveniently, they have a counter outside for these only so it's nice not to have to go inside the restaurant go through the whole process of ordering and sitting down. They sell aebleskivers by threes only, so it's $3 per order. They come with powdered sugar and smothered in a raspberry/cherryish(?) jam, which = sugar overload!!! I think I would've preferred it with only the powdered sugar since the jam is kind of overwhelming, so maybe try ordering with jam on the side. 3 aebleskivers is actually pretty filling (considering I stuffed myself at Paula's and Olsen's Bakery beforehand) so I wish they could sell only one at a time... but otherwise it was tasty and unique! Kind of like a spherical pancake-donut hybrid. The bees definitely loved them... they were everywhere! I had to walk across to the next street to eat them in peace!

Pretty good restaurant. I had a Danish sausage sandwich, and it was mmmmm good! And the cheese (I forgot what it was called) was soooo good too! Service was friendly and the prices were reasonable. Decor was kinda neat, nothing too fancy, but they had some Danish paintings and pictures on the wall. Great place to come for lunch.

Reviewing aebleskivers only. Delicious, fluffy and satisfying, but why did the girl in front of me get more powdered sugar? So jealous. They are a little over hyped, but I enjoyed them as a snack and I'm not bitter because the line was actually short for once. It is something to at least try once if you're in the area~

Aebleskivers here are a Solvang tradition. If you don't get to Solvang very often, buy a package of Arnie's mix and make them at home - they're just as good! Add the Danish sausage if you are hungry. It compliments the Aebleskivers nicely.

Cut to the chase- the food was 5 stars but the atmosphere was more like 3 to be honest- packed, hot, shrieking babies, looong bathroom lines and so on. But to average the two ratings in this case would be an undue insult to the insane yumminess of this place. You can easily drown out those annoyances in your delightful Solvang food coma. There are countless little breakifast/bakery type places in Solvang. They by far outnumber their famous windmills, or anything else there for that matter. So we figured we'd ask the most grumpy looking, tourist hating, hermit local we came across. Apparently, he doesn't hate tourists too much because he sent us to Solvang Restaurant. It's conventiently right in the heart of where you would be strolling around anyways, on Copenhagen Drive. It has something for everybody- with a long menu of diverse sandwiches, chilis, kids stuff, meat/chicken/fish dishes, as well as vegetarian and dieter's options. Their breakfast menu is impressive. But what is most crucial- is for y'all to try the Aebleskiver, period. Everyone goes there for it. Seriously, where else can you just stumble across it? Just don't ask how to pronounce it because they'll tell you that you can't. But you can sure as hell love eating it! Not straying too far from my comfort zone- I like trying new things like Aebleskiver, but their spinach omelet sounded too good to pass up. The omelet was yummy and fluffy and stuffed with spinach swimming in a sea of some sort of cream cheese and hollandaise sauce. It might sound kind of gross, but it was RIDICULOUSLY good- enough to make me just consider driving north for several hours just for it. But it also sounds like a free fast ticket to a quadruple bypass. Hmmm...Yup, still totally worth it. And if you are really a health nut like I am, clearly, you'll wash these delicious, decadent, and naughty treats down with their delicious and unique beers. Carlsberg's Elephant was our choice, and a very good one. And who cares if its not noon yet? I mean, not only are you most likely on vacation, but you're practically in Denmark anyways- many have popularly boasted that its more Danish than Denmark. Besides, take it from a fellow European Union citizen: its never to early for a beer on their turf.

Everyone raves about the dessert and sausages, but we were surprised to find one of the best clam chowders we have ever tasted! Our soup bowl was chocked full of clams (rather than potatoes), not overly salty, and super creamy. Not sure if it was just the soup of the day or listed on the menu regaularly, but it is a must-try if available!

Very average place to have breakfast. We ate here as part of our Sideways trip and that was the only reason why we stopped in. I ordered the California Eggs Benedict (8.95) which was eggs benedict with avocado and tomato. It came with a side of hash browns. It was good, but nothing special. We also got The Works Omelette ($9.50) (ham, bacon, Danish sausage, mushrooms, onion, tomato, green peppers, and cheese) that came with hash browns and toast. The cheese isn't mixed in with the rest of the filling, but rather a slice or two melted on top. I was really looking forward to trying aebleskivers since I had heard so much about them. Talk about over-hyped. They are basically pancake balls with raspberry jam and powered sugar. They were fine, bur hardly anything to brag about. Funnily enough, the waitress was trying to convince the table across from us to order them. When they declined, she said "Are you sure? We're known for them." in sort of a snooty way. I was laughing inside. The restaurant is long and deep with tables in the middle and painted wooden booths along the walls. The booths are roomy enough for two people, but the parties of four looked a little squished. Up front by the register, they sold aebleskiver pans and assorted jams and jellies. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they carried Mason Hill Farm preserves. The pumpkin butter is awesome. There is also a little take-out window for aebleskivers and misters on the awning to help keep the sidewalk in front of the restaurant cool.

There are some people who go to Solvang for the windmills, cuckoo clocks, and wooden shoes, and then there are people like me who go for the aebleskiver. Popular in Solvang, stores sell the specially designed cast-iron pan so you can make your own, and more then one restaurant has it on their menu. Although believe me when I say every aelbeskiver is not alike. It was through some bad experiences that I found that the "Solvang Restaurant" is the only true place to get this warm golden brown beauty. They even go one step further in letting you watch them make the aebleskiver through an attached walk-up window, where you can quickly order and enjoy. Served hot, drenched in raspberry jam, and sprinkled with powder sugar, for $3.75 you get three and it's worth every penny. Eat it for breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon snack, an aebleskiver is good at any time during the day.

We had to try this just for the Aebleskivers. They were good. Good service, fast service. Nothing special, just a good simple diner with what seems like a lot of history. The window service and being able to see them make the Aebleskivers was a treat.

Ebelskivers are awesome. Get there early or be expecting a wait. Breakfast is served until 1pm which is nice.

Wasn't really looking for this place, but only looking for some food to soak up all the wine we had from a day-long trek from the valleies (curse you Daniel Boone, why is your Pinot so good?). The aebleskivers on a stick would have been OK but the wife wanted something more substantial. First thing I saw on the menu was the Sausage sampler and that's what we rolled with. That was some of the best damned bratwurst and neunberger that I've tasted. The watitress said they steam, then brown them in order not overcook them. Very tender and flavorful. The Kraut was a bit overpowerful, but the red cabage was balance with sweet/sour flavor. Yes, the aebleskivers were good, but I didn't go crazy. A good pancake ball as a vehicle for ??? filling. If they develope some killer topping or stuffing, that'll send it over the top. But then they'd probably have to charge like 2 bucks a piece, so . . . Better leave it simple. Enjoy a piece of Danish history and go to the Solvang Restaurant!

I would have liked to write a review about the food, but we never got that far. Our party of four (3 adults, 1 child) walked in and we were seated right away. I would say that the place was maybe half-full & I think I am being generous with that assessment. We had enough time to all decide on what were going to have to eat, for one of the adults to use the restroom & return, and have a brief conversation with the employee cleaning the table next to us. We expressed our concern that no one had come down to our table, so when she left, I figured someone might come down to us soon. NOPE. We sat there...hungry...thirsty...waiting...and trying to be patient with the non-existent service. We continued to talk at our table and one of the things that we did discuss was the lack of beer selection. I believe there were about 4 beers on the menu, all of which we could have bought at any store. I think the most "exclusive" one was Carlsberg. Nothing too special in their offerings. Oh well, we were there more for the food, so we figured we would make up for it later. I am typically the first one to make excuses as to why service might be slow, and although I was looking around to justify the fact that we still didn't have even a glass of water offered to us, I could not figure out what the delay could be. We grabbed our belongings after our 10-15 minute wait and walked over to The Red Viking where we had a great meal. The older gentleman that seated us at the Solvang Restaurant was at the front of the place as we walked out and he didn't seem to care. He just looked our way and kept chatting while leaning on the counter. That was okay though...the other restaurant gladly took our $75 for lunch and treated us well.

Good sausages. I had sausage platter $14.95, 4 different sausages with red and white cabbage sauer kraut and mash potatoes. It was pretty busy

if you are visiting solvang, then you have to try an aebleskiver!! it's a ball shaped pancake with raspberry jam and powdered sugar, and for $3 more you can add on a scoop of ice cream. we ate in the restaurant, but you can also order to go from the front of the store, if you don't want to wait for seats / have to tip =P our server was really nice and our food came relatively fast :)

I don't know what the aebleskivers hype is about. It's just fried dough with HFCS goo on top. Split an order with some friends for a try, thank me later.

This place is absolutely the place to begin your trip around wine country. You need a good breakfast to help absorb all that wine you're going to be drinking!!!! Sometimes the hostess or waitresses are gruff, but we lucked out this last trip and everyone was really nice. The food was excellent. Eggs and pancakes and omletts are standard but really good. The EBLESKEEVERS are what to get here! They're not bad - not really my thing - it's the JAM that makes it on these things. Carb up, people - it's wine time.

ok so i cant rate the food here a total negative since this is the first danish place ive eaten at, thus i have nothing to compare it to, nor can i rate it very high because i didnt really enjoy the food. so yelp says 2 stars = "meh. ive experienced better" - ill be honest and say i havent. i think for some of the plates they are overpriced...$9.95 for deli meats and bread? yikes. had myself a creamed herring @ lunch. wow this was interesting. i cant say that it tasted bad, tasted decent, i just wasnt used to food like this. they served it in pieces that you build your own sandwich with something like dense wheat bread, tomatoes, onions, pickles and radishes. the creamed herring was indeed creamed in some tart, sweet white "sauce." the texture reminded me of sour cream you get at hispanic restaurants. at first i thought i wouldnt be able to keep it down, but my body took it. it sure didnt look to appetizing. i guess thats my fault for being adventurous. this was $6.50. at least it wasnt expensive. will i go back? maybe, but not for the creamed herring, but ill give the place a second chance with something else. my girlfriend got a danish salad which basically was a ceaser salad with bacon. other friends got the open faced sandwich which was basically what i mentioned in the beginning, a $9.95 deli meat/bread meal. we also had some abelskivers at the end. its a simple dessert. i wouldnt say its anything special. the ingredients were plain as day. waffle or pancake mix + raspberry jam + powdered sugar. tasted exactly like what you saw and would imagine it to taste like. raspberry jam was good though. ill need to try it with the ice cream next time. but i guess i could just make it at home. i think for me, i just wished this place gave the food (as far as what i and my friends ordered) more thought. i left with the impression of..."thats it?" there has to be more to danish food. which is why ill give the place a second try, maybe i just ordered the wrong thing. overall, cool little city (a bit of a shopping/tourist trap) and chill staff at the solvang restaurant.

As anyone who has read the previous reviews, there is one thing and one thing only that you are mandated by God himself to order... AEBELSKIVERS These little balls of Angel tears are smothered in raspberry goodness and top with powdered sugar. What more can you ask for. These are a must if you are anywhere in the area. My girlfriend and I were making a day of Santa Barbera and told me we had to go to Solvang to put "danish balls" in our mouths-well I did and I must say I will do so many times to come!

We were in Solvang for the day. Happened on this delicious smell coming out of this restaurant. Lunch was OK, regular grub. But the Aebleskiber treat was great. Best thing on Menu. Would Rec to stay hungry and have lunch there.

To me, Scandinavian food outside of Scandinavia is pretty plain and simple and it's unfortunate that Scandinavian restaurants don't serve cuisine for the daring. I had the meatballs and sausage. Pretty good but it's nothing you can't find at Ikea. Service was excellent. Aebilskivers were yummy.

Was walking through Solvang when I saw this line outside the restaurant with people waiting for something. I kind of peaked and checked things out and people where waiting for these things called Aebleskivers. Just the way they described it with powdered sugar and raspberry jam, just sounded to good to pass up and at a price point of 3 for $3, I waited in line like the rest of the people. There were only a couple of people ahead of me, but seemed like it took a long time to serve people. I probably stood in line for about 10 minutes and watched them make fresh Aebleskivers while in line. I'm not sure if they fry or bake them, but out came these balls and then they poured on the jam and the powder sugar. So I finally got my Aebleskivers and found a spot to sat down. Got an extra fork for the wife and we decided to dig in. First impression, good but I know this taste, then after the 3rd bite, I knew what it tasted like, Fresh Pancakes. So I guess Aebleskivers is Danish for Pancake Ball (or maybe not). Anyways, it did taste good and for 3 for $3 you could do a lot worst. It's more of a 3.5 place, but since I can't do half stars, I'm in a generous mood and thinking about the Aebleskivers is making my mouth water, so Solvang Restaurant gets 4 stars for their take out window of Aebleskivers. If in the area, might be worth trying out.

came here again two days ago and lo and behold! it was danish days! meaning that the entire solvang community comes out to watch the danish parade, lot of artisans selling their goods in a fair type of event, and a huggeee line of people waiting in front of a makeshift tent to eat some aebelskivers. luckily, we knew how to beat the line - just go straight to the source! we didn't even have to wait 5 min to get seated inside solvang restaurant, where i ordered the danish salami and tilsit cheese on rye sandwich, chili fries, and aebelskivers. my friends had the combo platters. SO GOOD. the danish sausage tastes like breakfast sausage. pretty delish.

Solvang: Home of the Ableskiver We had to try it! I thought it would be superb, but it was just okay, It's just like a pancake but rolled into a ball with strawberry jam and powdered sugar on top. 3 of them for $3.75, which is the cheapest price in time I believe! Also had the danish sausage with their sweet mustard and hotdog with coleslaw, which were also good. The service was very nice too.

Happy! Satisfied! And content! My BF and I went here for Breakfast and ordered to share- to maximize our tasting experience. So, we started with "The Works" Omelette - full of meaty mushrooms, colorful bell peppers, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, oh yes! And gigantic crispy pieces of BACON! Came with a side of very tasty hashbrowns that actually tasted like potatoes! Next, we shared a side of Danish sausage, perfectly cooked that was accompanied by homemade honey mustard - amazing! Danish pancakes lightly powdered with sugar and shortly followed by the grand finale ... Aebleskivers!!!! Oh Geezus! A set of three perfectly prepared unique Danish donuts covered in sensationally sweet raspberry preserves. Of course, my bf and I couldn't help ourselves - we put some bacon inside the "skiver" and then tried a bit of Danish sausage in it too. WOW! Tastebud Disneyland! Overall, great experience - good service and reasonable prices.

My wife got violent food poisoning after eating the meatballs here. She said they had tasted "wrong" during the meal. She's Scandinavian, so she definitely knows what "right" tastes like. An hour after the meal, she was doing wind sprints to nearly every public bathroom in Solvang. Not the kind of sightseeing she was looking for on this trip. The most disappointing part of the experience came when she went back to the restaurant to tell them what had happened. Not wanting another customer getting sick, she decided she should tell the manager. Her story was met with steely indifference and one word, "okay". Not okay actually. In fairness to them, they did agree to refund the cost of the meal after another visit to the restaurant, but still. The agony and defeat of food poisoning and lost day in Solvang ain't worth it.

Anyone who has ever gone to Solvang will tell you to come get the aebelskivers. "It's amazing," they say. "It's these little pancake like balls," they'll tell you. When you get inside, there is even a little story about them on the back of the menu. Were the aebelskivers worth the hype? In a word, no. Not that I'm trying to be mean or facetious but when they tell you it's like a little round pancake, you should take it literally. It's pretty much a little round pancake dressed with some kind of berry perserve and powdered sugar. With that said, the aebelskivers are pretty good and if you do find yourself in Solvang, the Solvang Restaurant isn't a bad place to drop in for some of these little round pancakes, I mean aebelskivers. As for the restaurant itself, it's a weathered little diner serving up typical diner like food complete with diner like waitresses. In a word, it's ok. In two words, it's A-ok.

**FOR THE ABLESKEEVER ONLY!!!! The best thing we ate in solvang was the ableskeevers from The Solvang Restaurant. 3 donut hole like dessert covered in strawberry jam and power sugar made me want 2nd! And for $2.95 it was worth the price! Great idea for putting in a take out window near the door.

Love the aebleskivers! We have to stop by here every time we are in town to pick up these yummy danish deserts. They really are little fluffy rolled up balls of pancakes (hot drops from heaven lol) as others have commented so it was an easy thing for me to try haha. My favorite desert for sure! You can buy 3 for about $3.50. I went for broke and bought 9 to bring home. I love to warm them up and eat as I watch TV. But I'm a leftover kind of person. They are best fresh but still nummy reheated. Make sure when you get them to go that they package the raspberry jam in a to go container or you will have a soggy mess when you get home. We found out the hard way in the past lol. Happy snacking!

No matter what time I've come, this place is PACKED yet they magically are able to seat us. The staff are consistently friendly and fast. Food comes hot and to all my specific high maintenance demands first thing in the morning. They don't judge! Serving sizes are a little bigger than I can eat, but not obnoxious. However, I somehow muster the strength (one must take one for the team) and eat it all, b/c it just seems RUDE to leave anything behind. It's great cozy comfort food. The omelets always come out fluffy. The Aebleskivers are light and fluffy, and bacon - just to the right crisp that I like. Yummo! Family friendly. Must stop in Solvang!!!

Came here to try the abbleskivers, they were ok. It's like a round pancake with berry preserves and powdered sugar. Not sure if I'll buy they again but it is something you should try when visiting Solvang.

Decided to stop by here for a quick bite as we were walking down the sidewalk. My wife and I each got a Dutch Sausage, and we shared an order of 3 Aebleskiver (sp?). Suffice it to say, we were not disappointed. The sausage came with a mustard sauce that was similar to dijon - which I can't stand, to be frank - but not too similar, as I thoroughly enjoyed it. It went a long ways toward complimenting the meat. Speaking of the meat, rich in flavor, juicy, and on a very tasty french roll. The Aebleskiver were equally as impressive. They came out looking like little pancake balls, but they were not overly sweet. Covered in raspberry sauce, and powdered sugar, they were a perfect dessert for 2 to share!

I walked in the door a little after 2pm on a Sunday and it was not super busy, but the restaurant was about 2/3 full. After 5 employees looked at me as they were passing by, finally the cashier asked me if I was looking to be seated. I said yes and he told me to sit wherever I wanted to sit. I took the nearest booth. There was a waitress (not mine) yelling into the kitchen from 15 feet away in the dining area several times during my visit, which was not appreciated. I was glad she did not wait on me as she was very abrupt and apparently stressed out. A minute later, a menu was given to me by the same cashier who was steps away. The waitress that approached my table had a very kind face and asked me what I wanted to order and I told her I will have the "Split Pea" soup (I had seen it on the chalkboard) and an adult grilled cheese sandwich. She brought me the soup and sandwich and after she walked away, I realized that the soup had ham in it....... Now I realize it is totally my bad for not asking if the split pea had ham in it. So I slid the uneaten soup to the far edge of the table to give her the signal that I was not going to eat it. Then I ate the grilled cheese, which was good. She came back to my table half way into my sandwich and asked me if everything was OK and I said yes, and just as I was about to say BUT to tell her about the soup, she had turned and walked away quickly. I didn't even have time to speak another word and she was gone. The second time she came back, she dropped off the check. Now the soup was glaringly not touched and she never asked me about it and clearly didn't want to deal with me. The busboy came by and asked me if I was done and I said yes. So the moral of this story is that although the food was just OK, I will never return. Why the heck do the servers in this place hate working there so much? They all seemed like they would rather be somewhere else. A shame to see this in our valley.

While in Solvang, I stopped by Solvang Restaurant to sample their famous Aebleskivers (how do you even pronounce it?). They're located near the intersection of First & Copenhagen and you'll likely find it by spotting the line outside their take-out window. They do also have a proper sit down operation though. Anyway, the Aebleskivers are basically Danish donuts (no holes or anything) with raspberry jam + powdered sugar on top. And they taste just like that... pretty decent and puffy. I wish they gave me more jam though. All in all, it's was okay... but not something that I would likely crave. It's good to try at least once, but not good enough like a Beignet to merit a true craving.

My husband and I went to Solvang for the first time this week, and everyone we talked to said we had to get aebelskivers from Solvang Restaurant. After eating pastries at Birkholm's Bakery, we weren't very hungry...but didn't want to miss out on aebelskiver joy. They pancake puffs were soft, fluffy, and fresh, and had a delicious raspberry jelly on top, dusted with powdered sugar. We also split a sausage and cheese croissant sandwich. Both the sausage and cheese was tasty, but nothing was remarkable about it. We went for the original aebelskiver experience, and were not disappointed. Next time, we'll probably try them a la mode.

I wasn't expecting much even though it got reviews ... I don't know why. It was delicious! The sausage platter was SO good! Also, the meatball sandwich with danish cheese on a croissant ... wow. so tasty! Event the fried chicken was good! It was crunchy without being too greasy. And of course, the aebelskivers ... hello! Fresh, flavorful ... Amazing. I would definitely go back. The place is diner style and very casual, but so friendly and good.

I love this place whenever I'm traveling up north along the 101. I make it a point to stop in and eat breakfast here and pick up some abelskivers for the road. Excellent breakfast options, generous portions, good prices all topped off by friendly and efficient service. You can tell it appeals to both locals and visitors alike and I've met several friendly locals here.

Horrible food. Everything was straight out of a can and heated in a microwave. Meatballs Tasted like rubber from a dog toy. It seems harsh but I feel I was ripped off. I feel like they should have to pay me to eat that crap.

Really tough deciding how to review this place and how many stars to give... let me explain. I decided to eat at this restaurant for one reason. Two of my favorite actors Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church sat in here in the early 2000's during a scene in their film "Sideways". "Sideways" being my all time favorite movie, and having just recently re-watched it, I had to make my way here. Now, the first attracting thing about about the restuarant is obviously the Aebleskivers, and let me just be honest and say they are nothing you can't prepare in your own kitchen. Its a ball of pancake batter and some syrup and sugar on it, and mine came out a little burnt and dry... The food was pretty good! I wanted to try something specific to Solvang, and to the restaurant, so I decided on the "Danish Hot Dog" and it tasted very good, the fried onions on top were a nice touch. The best part of the experience was the service, the waiter was SUPER friendly and awesome at serving my family. The worst was the other teenage waiter who was picking at the huge pimple on his arm, while handing out silverwear after. Yuck. So, the little Danish dough balls were dissapointing, too much hype if you ask me, the food was pretty good, service was good, but overall restaurant hygein was bad. I'd say: Try this place out. You might leave wanting something more, but this place won't wreck your day. Solvang is beautiful, I'll be returning to the little town soon and I would definetely give this place another try.

Everyone goes for aebleskivers there. But we went to have a proper meal. I don't remember what we ate. BUT..! I do remember aebleskivers : ) They looked very happy to me, so I just had to have one. I made a friend in line with an Oregonian, and he just shared his portion with me, since he couldn't eat three, and I didn't want to buy three (and this is the batch they came in). We thoroughly enjoyed our aebleskivers bonding experience, and I added a couple places to see in Portland when I go on vacation there. Oh, right, the aebleskivers! Round. Sweet. Fluffy. Pankacy. With powdered sugar and jam. Really yummy! Have them with a cup of tea and a tad of cream!

There was a lot of hype when I came here, there was a long line and everyone was raving about their little balls of sweetness, I eagerly waited in line to try it and it looked delicious when I got them! However, they were not up to my expectations, they were literally little pancake balls! you can get this stuff at Denny's for the same price! But whatever it was still pretty good and I'm glad I tried it! wouldn't go back again though, it was just one of those "try it so you can say you did" places

We walked across this place in Solvang, there was a crowd around it, so we decided to give it a try. It was not special at all, pretty much a basic pancake puff with jam and sugar, nothing special, just a different presentation.

***If you wanted to just try something out that's unique to the culture, just check out the aebleskivers stand only!!! It is definitely not worth going in for a sit-down meal. I've been here twice so far. The first time was to just check out the aebleskivers. I got 2 servings of aebleskivers (3 per serving) for my friends which totaled about 5 people. It is definitely better to share because the aebleskivers aren't too great, but it's good to try it at least once. They're freshly made pastry balls with jam and powdered sugar on top. In the end, I would take a simple donut over them any day. My second time was a sit-down dining experience. We initially came to Solvang because we were taking out my sister who came to visit from Germany. As a result, we wanted to try out Danish food. In my opinion, the food was very mediocre. Maybe it is because I am not used to Danish food? But then again, my family who came with me, also thought the same thing. I ordered a simple salad with vinaigrette dressing and the soup of the day, pea soup with ham chunks. When I got the soup, there weren't that many ham chunks in it. Actually, the soup was not at all tasty (my first time trying pea soup - I wanted to see what it would taste like). The soup left a horrid after-taste in my mouth and I couldn't see myself finishing it. My sister from Germany tried it, thought it was okay, and ended up finishing it for me though. As for the simple salad, it was very annoying to eat. First off, it was a salad comprised of iceberg lettuce, sliced beets, and pickles. Costco sells the same iceberg salad for $3.15 for an entire bag's worth, so I didn't think this was worth the money. Plus, they filled up a small salad bowl of it and placed it on a small plate (probably to make it look more than it actually is?). The annoying bit about it was whenever I would take my fork and grab some pieces, bring them up, a beet or other components would slide off the edge and land on the table making it inedible. The beet didn't even land on the plate because the plate was so small. This happened about 3 times where I was left with only 1 beet left to enjoy. My brother, on the other hand, ordered the Danish special, which is a cold sandwich comprised of meat and unmelted cheese between "cardboard" like, super-thin brown bread. My brother was sorely disappointed (I could tell by how his face dropped when they brought it out). All he ate was the meat and that was about it. Service was alright. We ordered aebleskivers for dessert for my sister to try, but before even receiving them, we got the check instead which I thought was pretty rude. Will not be visiting again, especially since there are so many other alternative restaurants around in the Solvang area.

We came for breakfast, and everything was fantastic, bacon was cooked perfect, eggs over medium were actually over medium, hash browns were perfect, and my country friend steak was bomb! Deffinetly coming back next time we are in town. Also the Ableskeevers or whatever they are called were excellent.

Wow, the last time I was here was probably 2005? The rating is solely based on Aebleskivers. My first time trying this. Boooo, i was highly anticipating the Aebleskivers, also known as the raspberry jam & powdered sugar pastry--looks like donut holes, but doesn't taste like it. It was alright---the "donut holes" tasted like donut holes without the sugar glaze with raspberry jam over it and powdered sugar. Eh, I will past next time.

Like two lemmings, we walk by the line at this place and wonder what all the commotion is about. Not to be outdone or miss out, we dash in and grab a seat so as not to have to wait in the horrible line outside. All for : aebleskivers! So WTF, pancake balls with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. They were a tasty little snack on our way to more wine tasting. I'd probably have them again just as a little novelty treat. I would not buy the batter, pan and jam set (uh...no) ... I would not wait in the line. I would not buy them to go from the window outside and walk down the street eating them (too messy). I would not pick them up and take them to go. Must sit down and eat them right in the place, otherwise cold and possibly rubbery. Our server: Custodio...interesting. When we waked in the door, he stood there and sort of tweeked out a little bit before we were seated by someone else. Then he proceeded to ignore us even though we were sitting in his section. Once he was onto us being customers (duh) he was all smiles, service and then some. The host, whatever his name was was rude and pretty nasty. (the younger guy). The older guy was very pleasant and very nice. The coffee was good and a must with the skivers! Nice afternoon treat. They get +2 stars for the skivers and coffee and -3 overall from 5 total for the stranger tweeker and the rude host dude. I don't know that I'd come here for any other food. It felt sort of 'diner-y' and meh...

This place was just okay. I had a really good chicken sandwich, but its really hard to mess up a chicken sandwich. I didn't like my split-pea soup and my fiance had decent steak. We did order the Aebleskivers. I'm not much of a pastry person, so I just thought they were all right. If they had vanilla ice cream with it, then maybe I'd have something to be excited about.

Yum aebelskivers! Sweet and soft and warm. Their better then a krispy creme! This is my usual lunch spot in solvang. The food is a bit pricy though. I usually just get the kids grilled cheese because I am a vegetarian and I don't mind dropping ten dollars on authentic food but ten dollars for a sandwich with veggies and cheese is a little ridiculous. I last went here with my boyfriend though and I made him get the sausage platter haha. It comes with three different sausages on a bed of sauerkraut served with mashed potatoes and gravy and purple cabbage. I ate the purple cabbage which I loved! It's kind of like a softer sweeter version of sauerkraut.

We stopped in for lunch the other day and were glad to see that breakfast was served until 1PM. The service was good. I ordered a corn beef sandwich that was served cold. I assumed it was a warm sandwich and the server was happy to get it warmed for me. She even ask that they toast the bread. My friend ordered the eggs benedict on wheat and hash browns crispy. She always orders with potatoes well done and they were perfect. My husband had an amazing vegetable sandwich, it was a bit on the small side but he said it was great. We all tried the abelskivers and enjoyed them. It was very sweet and yummy. The place is not fancy, but it is clean and friendly. We are looking forward to going back for breakfast soon.

Came here for breakfast because of a recommendation. The food was good; I tried the aebelskivers. The restaurant didn't blow me away but I don't regret going.

We ate here for lunch after walking around Solvang for a while. We had the club sandwich on a croissant and both thought it was quite good. The aeblesiver's for dessert really did us in and what was originally our cheapest meal for the vacation became the most expensive as we decided to buy all the pieces necessary to make them ourselves at home. I hope we are able to make them somewhat as well as they did for us. I'd certainly recommend this place and go back to it again if we were in the area.

Aebleskiver alone gives this breakfast spot 5 stars. These delicious powdered looking round pancakes w/ raspberry jam on top is sooo worth the stop!

Ate here during a weekend getaway to Solvang for my birthday. I've been a few times before and always, ALWAYS get aebelskivers. They're a must-have whenever you visit Solvang. It's basically like a pancake ball, with raspberry syrup and powdered sugar. Very tasty. You can also get it with ice cream, which my boyfriend had. He loved it, but I thought it made the aebelskivers a little soggy. I've never eaten anything else at this restaurant other than aebelskivers, but it's usually pretty busy, so the menu must be good. The decor/lighting inside is pretty drab, but the servers are nice and they bring your food out pretty quick. They usually have a little open window outside to sell aebelskivers only, but it was closed during this visit. It's also fun to stop for a moment and watch them make aebelskivers through the window. Although, it must be a marketing ploy because it just makes me want to buy the aebelskiver pan and mix after I watch them make it!

Went here today with the family and my parents. I wasnt very hungry because i was eating junk up to this point, so we shared a meatball croissent. I liked it alot. I asked for an Iced Tee and never got it. I was even on the bill !!!!!! My wife asked for napkins, straws, never got em. My wife asked for the dressing on the side, didnt happen. My parents, who where sitting at the other end of the place. Had the same horrible service. I complained to the guy at the cash register that i didnt recieve my drink and then my wife started to tell him that we also asked for stuff that we didnt recieve and he started to get an attitude. He might have been the owner ???? My dad who always leaves a tip no matter how bad. didnt leave a tip !!! couldnt belive it. I wouldnt come back because of all the other choices in Solvang but the sandwich was good. The french fries sucked. oh yeah, the water was nasty. everybody complained about it lol

I am usually game to try new things. While visiting Solvang, I wanted to try to find the most authentic Danish food that I could. My Danish friend doesn't like Danish food. And warned me about it too. I didn't believe her. She doesn't even like aebleskiver. I understand that going to a tourist area, that things can be watered down to the American palate. But I really wanted to try to get as authentic as I could. Not knowing if I'll ever make a trip to Denmark. I ordered the Danish meatballs. Well, I must say that I didn't like it at all. I did like the cabbage & mashed potatoes. I had to also try the aebleskiver. I liked them. A bit too sweet for my taste. I could only finish one. I don't know whether all Danish meatballs taste the same. But I was disappointed in these.

Eat here only if you like to pay a lot for food that you can make better on your own. Hot dog (I realize it's my fault for ordering a hot dog in Solvang) was $7.50 with fries. I would rather pay six dollars less for a hot temperature hot dog from Costco. Fries tasted like they were sitting out and warm and stale. No salt. My friends ordered a hamburger and it looked like what you would find at a church picnic. Come here only for the aebleskiver. Those were okay.

aebleskivers! scandinavian food selection! great service, oh and they open at 6am for the early risers. doesn't get better than that. their food selection is great. sofia m and i came here during the afternoon and tried their delicious aebleskivers. we could not decide if we should get a side of ice cream or a side of danish sausage so we ordered both. as weird as it sounds, we made the right call. aebleskivers and vanilla ice cream were made for each other. as to the danish sausage, it was unbeliveably tasty and juicy and the mayo based mustard that came with for dipping was so good i wanted to take a whole jar of it home. we also came here for breakfast the next day (we liked the service and warmth of the staff so much we decided to come back) and ordered an omelet and belgian waffle. the omelet included danish sausage which kicked up the omelet up a notch. the waffle was cripsy and fresh and very tasty as well. prices are very affordable and didn't find a hygienic fault. a must visit when in town.

Paula's Pancake House had an hour plus wait -- and with all of the marathon runners waiting to eat - I knew it would probably be longer. We wanted to get started wine tasting sooner than later so we strolled down to Solvang Restaurant where there was only a 10 minute wait. While we were standing out front, we tried the aebleskivers [why not? they have a stand out front]. They were warm and doughy and delicious but the raspberry sauce was too sweet. Once we were seated, the service was good and quick - but the food was really a let down. I rarely eat pancakes and when I do, it seems to only be at Paula's where they have some of the best Danish pancakes topped with fresh strawberries. These were called Danish pancakes but they looked and tasted like the regular kind -- only thinner. Sad. It just wasn't the same. The rest of the food is diner-style so you know exactly what you're getting. Nothing special or interesting - just your regular fare.

Wonderful and filling breakfast. I have an aebleskiver personally at home and just use the run of the mill pancake mix. I try to add things according to my liking, but have never had the joy of eating a traditional aebleskiver. Great, reasonably priced food. Stopped through for a break on the way from Southern CA to Northern CA, and it was worth the food and worth the rest!

As I was standing on a street corner eating my recently bought pretzel, I see folks walking down the street eating some sort of large donut hole slathered in red sauce and powdered sugar. .... Ended up here, found out they're Aebleskivers. For that alone 5-stars. You get 3-large meatball size 'aebleskivers', doused with rassberry syrup and powdered sugar for like $2.50. Yum. Note that it's not advised to eat these, while walk, wearing black, on a windy day. I'm coming back on the next road trip!

I admit. I ate here just cus they ate here in Sideways. The ambiance was half american diner and half dutch house. Pretty cool. Had Aebleskivers, which were described at my table as "jelly donuts with the jelly on the outside". Was about how they tasted. Other than that, the place wasn't that memerable...the danish sausage sandwich was a little plain, and the potato salad tasted exactly like potato salad. So, nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about.

Pretty much like a diner in appearance, service and food. It's like a Scandinavian themed version of Denny's.They have Aebleskivers, so if that's what you're looking for in Solvang, it's worth stopping by. We had lunch there and had their specialty Sausage, meatball with cabbage. No complaints, was on par with a typical diner in quality.

This is for their aebleskivers stand. So we order their aebleskivers it was good but it didn't amaze me. If a donut and a pancake had a baby you would have this. The jam type of sauce they put on top though is pretty good. I say it's worth a try if your in Solvang.

We stopped here for lunch after our camping trip at Lake Cachuma. It has a good selction of danish and german food, however I was a little disappointed in the food portions. My plate, Danish sausage (so-so), was a little bit lacking in terms of the price that we paid. A fun ambience though......

  • Jenn S.

I would NEVER come back here to eat a meal. You notice how most of the reviews are for the aebleskiver stand outside and not the restaurant. The polish dog was good but I've had better at Costco. I paid $8 for an average dog and unsalted fries. Worse than amusement park food. Enough said.

My wife and I quickly stopped here on our way to Cambria, and we made sure to come here for a quick bite of their aebleskivers (sp?). Very tasty. Not much else to say, check 'em out if you're in town! Oh, and watch out for the bees! The sweet jam you get with the snack is very attractive to them apparently.

Reviewing aebleskivers only. During an early morning walk thru the Danish streets, we decided to go to this place for their aebelskivers, a round pancake ball (cooked in a pan with round divets) and covered with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. It was good and cost approx $3.75 for 3 balls. They have a takeout window (no lines when we were there) for you to order just aebleskivers. There are folks in the restaurant enjoying breakfast or lunch. The staff wasn't very friendly when we went in to place 2 orders of aebleskivers because the takeout window was closed.

Nice try for authentic Danish fair in a Danish colonized town. It's basically a diner with some danish foods. Pass on the Danish hot dog. If you've had a real Danish hot dog from the streets of Copenhagen, you know this just an american hotdog with some onions on it. The ebelskivers are ok, a little sweet and soggy. The frozen kinds from denmark are much better though. But for one of the only danish restaurants in the country, not too bad.

  • Valerie H.

I used to work there. The red cabbage was delicious. The funny part is that we we sold the "special" Aebleskiver mix (little round pancakes) and in the back we used to fill "special mix" bags from 50 lb. bags of Bisquick. lol Tourists would pay 10 times the price for this special mix. The raspberry jam they sell is very good, though.

Loved the local restaurant feel. The cute old guys walking back to the counter asking for "the usual" were an added charm. Our pancakes, waffles and aebleskivers were delicious, but the bacon was burned to a crisp. It was a good way to start the day!

Nothing special. Good cheese. Meat balls and sausage had no distinct flavor. Pastry balls were the star. I would return only for the ableskeevers. But then again u can get those elsewhere.

The food was fine -- very diner-ish. Sort of like Denny's in Denmark, meaning it had the basics but also some traditional items like Danish sausage and cheese (Tilsit). I had an egg yolk Danish omelette, which was tasty enough except for the huge piece of Tilsit cheese slapped on top and melted. It was just a lot of cheese, and since it didn't get out of the kitchen right away it looked...you know...shiny like it had been sitting for too long. Next time I would order it without the cheese. Also, the hash browns tasted all burnt and way too crispy. This may be a personal taste issue since I just don't like things crispy, but be forewarned... Our service was passable, albeit rushed, and the aebleskievers were good but a little overly jammy. I grew up eating them so I might be pickier than if I hadn't ever had them before. I also need to add to this review that when I ate here I was incredibly, totally, beyond hung over from the previous day of binge wine drinking. Still, that's when you appreciate a greasy spoon the most and this place didn't really cut it for me.

Many props for the restaurant to name itself after the town it's in! It makes for people like me remind me exactly where I am! I didn't actually dine in the restaurant itself, instead, I had my first taste of aebleskiver. Oh, the Nordic languages...almost German but not really, which confuse me to no end. They're these little balls made of what tastes like hotcake batter, drizzled in raspberry jam and showered in powdered sugar. I'm not the biggest fan of hotcakes myself, and I'm allergic to berries, but the one powdered sugary ball I did have was warm and tasty, and I enjoyed it as we ate it on a bench on the quasi-blustery day we were there, resulting in being covered in the powdered sugar we didn't eat. Aebelskiver makes for a tasty snack/breakfast. Four stars simply because I wasn't super-wowed, which garners that fifth star.

If ur in solvang. I guess you should try their ableskivers. Currently $3.15 for 3 pancake balls with raspberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. It was ok seriously ppl it's just pancake balls!

  • Veronica V.

Come here for the aebelskiver because you're in Solvang and there's nothing else to do but eat, and take bad tourist photos in front of windmills, that is unless you're up to searching for Neverland Ranch.

  • John N.

to me, the aebleskivers just tasted like funnel cake all balled up. so i wasnt really that impressed. they were good, just not fantastic or mind blowing. the first initial bite was too sweet for me, gave me the too sweet cringe that just hits you in the TM joint of your jaw. would i try it again, probably not. that just my biased opinion cuz i'm not really into sweets

  • Spratt M.

Yes, Jeff H., these are the best aebelskiver in town, especially because you don't have to go in to get them (extra star for street vending). It's important that your aebleskivers (they come in pairs here) be hot and fresh for the best outer crispiness to inner steaminess ratio. Find a bench on the sidewalk to enjoy. P. S. There is so totally more than overpriced Danish nick nacks. There are overpriced miniature horses, obviously! Read more reviews :).

I was back in town recently and went with my aunt for lunch. She is a bit of a regular and the service we received was vastly different from my experience in the past. If you're a local, you may want to get to know the staff for a better experience :)

  • Blade M.

This place is about the aebleskivers. If you get only these you'll be happy. If you don't get any of these, you'll be sad. If you get them with other stuff...you'll be melancholy. Seriously..the aebleskivers were great. The rest of our breakfast was pretty lame. The "danish" ham looked like it had just slid from a can a few minutes earlier. It was like military grade meat. The eggs, toast, etc. were ok but not great. Not a bad little place for a breakfast in the heart of the Solvang village but 2 better places are Paula's for their rocking pancakes and superior other dishes and (even better) the River Grill restaurant at the golf course on the outskirts of town. Yum! Next time I come to Solvang I'll swing by the take out window of this place for some "walking-around" aebleskivers, but likely skip this place for breakfast.

Ableskivers! Saying it is just as fun as eating them. I also had the Danish sausage (little bland, for me) and also a ham and cheese omelet....this was NOT all in one seating for me. Ableskivers were great everything else was typical diner food. Stopped by twice during our visit and the service was overall good but there were inconsistencies. The first server served our Ableskivers and sausage as soon as it was ready while the second server waited until everything was ready. We ended up checking on our food and received some attitude from the man at the front desk. How were we suppose to know that each server had a different style? Plus, our server never stopped by for an update and was serving up ableskiver orders to other tables that were seated after us. Minus one star for that.

    (3)
  • Gerald S.

Welp, all we did was order the Aebleskivers. It's probably the best aebleskivers in town. We didn't order anything else on the menu. I don't know why. The place felt like a lower-quality Denny's.

    (4)
  • Matt L.

The size of the entree was much too small. My mashed potatoes were out of a box and the waitress and hostess just seemed pissed. We should have opted for the buffet at the Red Viking.

  • Hydie N.

This place feels like a Scandinavian diner (if there's diners in Scandinavia). The aeblerskivers were pretty good. Not too sweet, not soggy, just cooked right and prepared on order. The raspberry jam on top tastes really fresh, like they made it themselves (or bought good jam, lol) Our waitress was pretty nice, I have no compliants. The only thing I didn't like was that our table was kinda sticky. Perhaps too many spilled raspberry jams, haha. We also got the danish sausage which tasted like a good european sausage. I couldn't taste what's the distinct difference. But whatever. The aeblerskivers were wonderful. Now if only they had ostrich burgers too....

  • Anna T.

WOW! The aebleskiver is amazing! We got the one with the ice cream on top and raspberry sauce. JUST YUMMM!!! I thought it was deep fried but its not! It's pretty cool cause you can watch them how they make it and its just batter and then they keep moving it around and it turns into a ball! Just amazing! And they also have a video of how to make it right at the window also. TRY IT! SOOO GOOOOOODDDD

  • Michael K.

You have to go if you are a fan of Sideways. There is a plaque at the table where the breakfast scene was filmed. Both the aebleskivers and danish sausage are very good. If you get in before 9 a.m. there are $6 breakfast specials.

  • Denise M.

Didn't go for their popular Aebleskiver, but for my personal favorite, the medisterpoles sausage. OMG. Heaven. Their honey mustard, also a must with this wonderfulness. Had one sausage. Got back in line for a second. The Arbleskiver looked delicious too. Looked like large donut balls, covered with powdered sugar and jam. Never ending like of people buying those. So happy this restaurant had a To Go window.

The information tour guide recommended Solvang Restaurant to try aebleskivers, so we decided to put it on our itinerary for the day. We got in at 3:30PM before they closed at 4:00PM. My friend ordered a #8 vegetarian sandwich with eggplant and avocado. I ordered the Danish sausage with a side of honey mustard. And we were so excited, we got our own plates of aebleskivers! But ironically, the only non-Danish dish we ordered was the best one and even then, the sandwich was slightly above mediocre at best. I was really looking forward to my first time having aebleskivers and I was very disappointed! They're worth trying just for the "I did it!" moment if you're sharing with two others but I was pretty done after the first bite. Aebleskivers are a traditional Danish treat - "pancake balls" dusted with powdered sugar and dipped in raspberry jam. Might as well call it "kind of cooked bread" and move on to the five Danish bakeries there are to try in Solvang instead! To be honest, I'd rather spend the same money and get two dozen donut holes. Same thing.

*this review is only for the aebleskivers* LOVE those aebleskivers! They are like a warm, fluffy ball of pancake with yummy raspberry sauce and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Definitely more of a sit down and eat dish rather than eating while walking around town. Great for breakfast or a snack!

(Dined 02/26/15 TH @ 1:30pm): "Home of Arne's Aebleskiver!" A Solvang experience wasn't complete until you had yourself a basket of aebleskiver at Solvang Restaurant. I'm sure other places in this little hamlet of Danish heaven also served these treats, but long ago this place won me over for reasons I couldn't remember now in my aging years. THIS REVIEW WAS SOLELY BASED ON THIS GLORIOUS DESSERT (heck, I'd order this as a meal!). Were they the same as I remembered!?: Aebleskivers ($3.60) - Round golden tennis ball-sized pastries that were a cross between a pancake and waffle, these were served in baskets of three blissfully covered with a sweet delicate raspberry jam and dusted with snow white powdered sugar. Each was piping hot as they were delivered straight from the deep fryer. Once I stuck a fork in one...I was done! The slightly gooey soft inside with a crisp outside was sheer perfection as I mixed it with the excess jam and sugar. Out of sheen kindness I shared with my friends, but I made sure they didn't Bogart the whole thing! I didn't mind these balls in my mouth! yelp.com/user_local_phot… Service - I excitedly placed my order inside with a cute young female at the counter. Minutes later, they came out in a simple presentation and I hightailed it out to the front bench to devour these rolled lumps of love. Easy-peasy. Parking (Free) - As the town went, most businesses didn't have their own private lot; rather, there were multiple public parking lots as well as street parking. Condusive for walking up and down the entire main road, we came on foot from nearby Hotel Corque. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - Mainly a restaurant with large cushy green upholstered booths and various wooden tables and chairs, it sort of reminded me of a German pub like the Red Lion Tavern in my hipsterhood of Silver Lake. There was a small display counter at the front if you wanted to purchase any souvenirs. There were a few decorations hung on the walls but it was mostly clear of such items. Except for the front entrance where some natural lighting came in, the place was dimly lit with electric lights almost to the point of an intimate setting...but not quite. Although there was a small outdoor order window just for aebleskivers, I decided to order inside. There were no TVs or background music. yelp.com/user_local_phot… Attire - Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, it's been years since I've enjoyed Solvang Restaurant's aebleskivers, but they were still da bomb - 'nuff said! Everything this time was excellent as in previous visits. One of these days I may actually have a meal here, but until then it was aebleskiver or bust. I found total value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was around $4.00 before tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 5.0 STARS

Danish pastry tour stop number 3! Did not eat inside, waited in the Aebleskiver to go line. Just look for the super long line and you know you at the to go window. I saw people eating this the first time I was here and told myself I had to find it the next time I came. Worth the 20 minute wait to try it. The line does stop if they run out and have to make another big batch but at least you know its made fresh. Aebleskiver - $3.75 - You get 3 round cake balls topped with raspberry jam. Looks like a donut ball but its soft and cakey. The jam gives it a nice sweet fruitiness.

Ultimate local diner that boasts of danish and north european delicacies. Ate here twice in my three days in solvang and enjoyed the dining eperience each time. The aebleskiver and danish sausage are a MUST! Three pastry balls doused in powdered sugar and raspberry jam is not at all greasy and tastes like light donuts that's not too sweet..it was perfect, needless to say. The sausage with the mustard mayo marries well with the 'skivers. Hot pastrami and danish dip sandwiches are as good lunch selections. First stop when you visit this cozy danish town!

One word. Aebleskiver. This was my first time visiting Solvang, and this place was priority due to all the Yelp reviews that have been raving about this Danish dessert. And best of all, they did live up to the hype. These are basically donut holes, covered in powdered sugar and raspberry jam. I thought the jam was on the sweeter side, but overall they were really delicious. Thankfully, the jam didn't make them too soggy, because we waited for about fifteen minutes to eat them. They're also only $3.60 for three balls. If you want to take out, just order at the little booth outside the restaurant. That's what I did, and sit at one of the tables outside. There wasn't that long of a line, but maybe because I went on a Friday around 1PM. I would go back here again! So good, and also very cheap!

Had to stop, they said "world famous". Abelskiver, basically round pancake with raspberry and powder sugar. Nothing to say OMG about. Belgium waffle was light fluffy, log cabin syrup:) Service was good, got our food quickly.

Full disclosure: I've only ever had the aebleskivers (abelskivers? ableskiiver? However you spell it) so this review is based solely off of that. If you've never heard of them, aebleskivers are tennis ball sized lumps of what I would describe as a mix between pancake batter and beignets cooked in these cast iron circle molds dusted with a fair amount of powdered sugar and slathered with raspberry jam. They are SO GOOOOOOOD. Perfectly baked golden on the outside, fluffy, aerated and moist on the inside. I find that the raspberry jam can overwhelm the delicate batter so I always request to have it on the side of my order. It's sweet and warm and very satisfying. One order comes with 3 of these balls of heaven for about $4.00 and if you're not one to share, I attest to the fact that it's a pretty substantial amount. If you're not a pancake lover or not a fan of doughy sweet treats, you won't find aebleskivers to be anything amazing. They're actually very simple, traditional Danish desserts, but for what it is, this place does it well and if I'm in the area, it's must for me.

First time that I visited Solvang and based on yelp reviews, I decided to give this restaurant a try! Went there for breakfast and plan to try the aebleskiver for dessert as claimed by many, that it is good and it's a must-try. Aebleskiver (pancake balls topped with powdered sugar and raspberry jelly): Everyone seems to be raving so much about it but I don't think it's amazing. Taste doughy and the raspberry jelly that comes with it is too sweet and makes the aebleskiver soggy. I was so disappointed I just took one bite and that's it. Food was mediocre, nothing fantastic to rave about. Just normal eggs, and bacons for a breakfast meal. Service is average, took us a while to get our server to get our drinks refilled. Will not visit again!

All you need to know - - Unless you grew up on Dutch cuisine I wouldn't recommend dining inside. The food isn't very good, and the quality is about what you'd find as a roadside diner. - Prices are 100% Solvang. -The iced teas was downright dreadful. - DO ORDER the aebleskivers from the window. In fact, if you come to this tourist trap of a city I would recommend putting the aebleskivers on your to-do list. Preferably before taking your picture in front a large wooden shoe.

This review is based only on the famous aebleskiver and if you are a fan of warm fried sweet goodness then you'll love this. Definitely a must try when visiting Solvang. Located in the heart of the town, Solvang Restaurant sells 3 aebleskivers for ~$3.60 that you can order straight from the window. Deep fried tennis ball sized dough that is served with raspberry jam and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. There's nothing more exciting than sitting with your family just in front of the restaurant on one of the benches holding that freshly made basket of aebleskivers and seeing other people enjoying them right beside you. Take a bite into these babies...they're warm crispy on the outside and soft inside. I kind of wished that I asked for the raspberry jam on the side because I felt like it was a bit sweet for my liking. I just don't like any fried dough smothered and covered with sauces (just my own preference bc i don't like it when it gets soggy and too sweet so to each their own right). Nonetheless, I can never say no to anything fried and everyone should try these at least once. The restaurant itself was a bit dated but it gives the restaurant character. Tons of aebleskiver souvenirs to purchase from the aebleskiver mix to various jams. The employees were friendly and even if there is a line service is quite fast.

Best Aebleskiver in town (Danish pancake balls)! You can get it when you sit down for a meal or walk up to the window & eat it as you walk around. It doesn't have apples in it like in Denmark but has raspberry jam & powdered sugar on top. So delicious!! I also got the cranberry and turkey croissant (no mayo, add Danish cheese - Tilsit). It was so good! I replaced the fries with cucumber salad - very glad I did!! It was delicious and very affordable!

I really wanted the thin pancakes, but then I was really craving waffles. I'm glad I got the waffles since they were light and not too dense. It was unfortunate that the syrup doesn't come in a jar, just in a case. I already had coffee before we got on the road, but since it was cold out, I just had to order more! The food was okay but I was happy we were finally able to sit down and get something to eat.

Where do I start? We kept walking around looking for a great place to have a birthday lunch. This one was the most promising. We were greeted by an upbeat gentleman who led us to our table; he then proceeded to throw (according to my companion)/toss (according to me) the menus on the table. Well. We would have preferred if he placed them on the table but okay. Servers were really nice. 5 stars for them and all their hard work. Combination platter (1 star) - Danish meatball and sausage that came with a side of veggies and split pea soup. Split pea soup tasted fine. Meatball and sausage, I definitely can buy some from Costco and it'll taste way better. As for the veggies, rubbery. Everything looked and tasted like it was fresh... Fresh from the freezer. My friend's meal was the steak platter and he gave it 1 star. One good thing about it is the meat wasn't tough but I'm not going to give any credit for that because their food shouldn't be tough in the first place. Aebleskiver (1 star) - Blasphemy!!!! Yes, yes. I'm giving it one star. Get a box of pancake mix from the grocery, add a bottle of jelly or jam from some unknown company and you have all the ingredients for this thing. They should've at least used Bonne Maman jelly. Sheesh. This place looks really busy but from what we saw at 1:30 PM on a Saturday, their cooks were busy making the Aebleskiver. Definitely not worth the hype.

Aebleskiver is why I stopped here! My cousin is out visiting from MN, being her first trip to CA I wanted our drive back up from LAX to be more enjoyable so we took the 154 past Cachuma Lake and over into Solvang. We wandered through the downtown shops & decided a bite was in order. I grew up eating these as a kid when I'd visit my moms family, so a fun treat for me. My cousin had never had them & I'm pretty sure quite enjoyed it! Busy spot, but prompt seating & service!

They hype is real! We were in town for the weekend and had to try these delicious pancake balls topped with strawberry jam and powdered sugar. The pancake balls were soft and moist and the strawberry jam added the perfect sweetness to it. If your in the area you need to try these you won't regret it.

Really enjoyed the Danish Pancake balls served here called Æbleskiver. Thought they tasted far better than Paula's Pancakes. Though they're known to be light and fluffy in texture similar to popovers the ones here were more dense, like a hearty pancake which I did not mind. Comes topped with raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. An order of three only costs $3.60 which is a total bargain. You could either dine in or get it to go thru the window out front. A definite must when in Solvang.

Went to the walkup window and ordered the aebleskiver with powder sugar and raspberry sauce and my son had it with ice cream. It was awesome. I even purchased their mix to make at home. We made them at home at it turned out great.

We were seated immediately, which I suppose should have been a warning in such a busy area. After waiting at the table for 10 minutes, we flagged someone down to ask if we had a server. Five minutes later she finally showed up at the table. No acknowledgement of the wait, no apology, just "ready to order?" After waiting for her for 15 minutes, I would have assumed the answer to that would be obvious. The waitress didn't pay attention and brought us the medisterpølse by itself instead of the medisterpølse meal we were trying to order. The æbleskivers were very tasty, as was the medisterpølse, but we were so tired of the service by then we just paid and left hungry rather than waiting to order more food. Summary: Terrible service, decent food, which is the reason for the 2 star rating.

The food is ok. Not great. It's about average diner in a suburban area. Yes, yes, I did have the famous aebleskivers and those were good. How could it be so bad when you eat sugar and carb? The problem is their utensils were disgusting. I sat right next to the coffee machine/utensil box so I exchanged my knife and fork myself without bothering the server who never even bothered to come check up on us or refilling water. I forgot to take a pic of knife before exchanging it but it was just like the fork. I seriously doubt that it was washed at all.

Love getting abelskivers when I visit this town. So delicious and consistent. Cheap treat, too. Popular with tourists..

The entrees weren't that great. We ordered the shrimp platter, tri-tip with fries, meatballs and mashed potato and the fried catfish. I guess over expected as tourists. Service wasn't also that great. The server looked grumpy.

Stopped in just for an order of Aebleskivers. Seated right away, ordered right away, served right away. Delicious! I'm not a huge sweets person, but these hit the spot. They aren't overly sweet, the jam is slightly tart and goes perfectly with the soft, puffy pastries. We ordered with ice cream on top, and it made these even better. An order of three aebleskivers is $3.95. If you add ice cream, it's $6.95. I think $3 for two scoops of ice cream is a bit much, but it's not like you're ordering this every day, so go ahead and splurge for the ice cream!

Tourist trap. I was expecting that so I didn't really care. I just wanted to have some aebelskievers and these were good enough. I had the open faced sandwich plate which was okay--I didn't realize it was all cold. The pickled cabbage was good but the pumpernickel bread was on the stale side. The kids portion of grilled cheese and fries was decent. My husband really liked the Danish sausage. If you go in expecting average food, you will not be disappointed.

The Abelskivers are delicious and the rest is spot on for a diner. Loved the omelettes.

The reason I gave 3 stars is because: Service 5+ Food 1 (a few items were good but overall pretty sad) I wanted to like the food because our service was excellent (thank you, Custodio!). I had the meatballs and my fiancé had the sausage platter. Since we both have some food sensitivities, we appreciated that Custodio was so knowledgeable about all the dishes' ingredients. I was surprised (and disappointed) to learn that they cook the æbleskivers in peanut oil, but cie la vie. I got to sit after my meal and watch my fiancé chow down on them ala mode, and he said they were really good. I then wandered over to a bakery down the street (fortunately there are a lot of them) for a sweet treat. I started with the pea soup, which had me thinking we had chosen a decent place to eat because it was thick, hot and flavorful. Unfortunately, that is the last good food until the æbleskivers. My fiancé said the sausage plate was "okay". Since my meatballs were rubbery, I had to wonder if they microwave them. The same goes for the mixed vegetables...if a restaurant can't be bothered to steam veggies to order instead of either soggy-boiling or nuking them then they should just leave them out. They were sad-looking and flopped around like spaghetti noodles. I also couldn't figure out why there were absolutely no spices in anything...the meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, and beans all were incredibly bland. The only thing with any flavor at all was the red cabbage, but I don't like it much so only had a few bites. I can't imagine that Danish people don't like spices, at minimum salt and pepper. So I wish I could recommend this place in order to give Custodio more business...maybe just order the pea soup and æbleskivers? Oh, and iced tea...very good, and my glass was refilled regularly without me having to ask.

The aebleskivers are amazing at the Solvang Restaurant! The atmosphere is upbeat, right in the heart of town. Great for kids and adults.

Just ate there and our server Gus was amazing, very attentive. Being a person with celiac disease he was very helpful and accommodating to find me something tasty to eat that was gluten free. I have the sausage platter and found it to be well-prepared and very filling. Will definitely try them again.

Wish I could say more. The food was disappointing and kind of plain, especially for the price. The restaurant could use some updating and cleaning. I know this is a touristy place but it doesn't jump out as spectacular. Arnie's Aebleskivers are the specialty of the house. These are fabulous. I met Arnie at the Lavender Festival in Ojai and he is the nicest and friendliest guy I've met in a long time. At the restaurant, the other guy who was managing it, cashiering the day I visited, wasn't so personable. He was checking people out as if they were just another number and was rather curt. They weren't that busy so I didn't understand the coldness. Maybe he was just having a tough day. Do try the Aebleskivers though. They even sell a pan for them and the recipe.

Will try to make this a tradition on future trips on 101 in Santa Barbara County.Never heard of Aebleskivers before the visit to Solvang on the way to San Diego via Buelllton, but apparently I was missing out. Solvang Restaurant is a cute Danish spot in this fairy tale town that was made famous worldwide in "Sideways". As this visit was a quick walk-through the town, we didn't actually got to dine-in but they have a little window where we got some Aebleskivers. The best way to describe them would be like pancake balls that come with raspberry syrup and powdered sugar on top. Pick up a 3 or more as they are perfect for strolling around the town and checking out this quaint little gem in Santa Ynez valley. If you're in Solvang-even if just passing by like us- make sure to give it a shot.

this review is solely for the Aebleskivers, which are a 5+++. we stupidly did not try them until our last day in solvang, and we wept great tears of regret after we finished our last bite. because no way in hell were we going to get back into that 45 minute line to get us some more. which brings me to the disorganized, inefficient and thus super slow service at the window, which is 1 star. tips: 1) get the ice cream. 7am? get the ice cream. 2) go crazy early, or dine-in to avoid the line. 3) if you must stand in line, bring a really long book. 4) if standing in line makes you cranky, do not go with a date. or your boss. or a spouse to whom you want to stay married.

First thoughts: The aebleskievers are divine!!! My bf and I didn't actually try food in the restaurant but ordered from the small window outside. They have a limited menu with aebleskievers and danish sausages. After our disastrous brunch at Paula's Pancake House, we decided, or rather I decided, to come here to make up for it and the aeblekievers did not disappoint! For about $3.50, one order of aebleskievers yields 3 large pancake-like balls of fried goodness! They are dusted with powdered sugar and dipped into a raspberry jam. Yum!!! I could not stop eating them and was so glad to find this little tucked-away place. Bottom line: If in Solvang, make sure to come here after a meal for some great dessert. These little guys aren't the lightest desserts but I don't think I can think of anywhere else I can even eat them in SoCal so I'm glad I got to nom on them in Solvang. :) Yelp 2015 Challenge: 4/100

I really enjoyed having breakfast here. The waffle was great and the sausage was over cooked. I can't speak of the Danish food there but the wife had these round pancake things and she had they were good. We sat at a table were movie was shot. So that's kind of cool. The staff was very friendly. During the weekdays these place was pretty empty. I'm sure it's packed on the weekends.

Well of course, everybody comes here for their famous Aebelskiver. But we wanted something a little more substantial but not too rich and heavy to spoil dinner. It was, but of course, sometime between 5 and 6 in the evening. They were to close at 5pm but they remained open for another hour due to the huge snaking line outside the take-out counter. We decided to split the "Danish Caesar salad with chicken" and, boy, was it huge! It was definitely the best dish to split. It was enough to satiate the two of us for hours until dinner. The chicken was well seasoned, the dressing not overpowering, and the lettuce fresh and crunchy till the last bite. It was my first time having the oft-talked-of Aebelskivers. They were tasty and were somewhat like pancakes baked and puffed up in the shape of balls. It had a slight banana-cake-like texture. We did want to have it with the ice-cream but they were out of it. Nonetheless, it was still delicious anyway.

Came in for the ableskivers and was disappointed. It could be because I can make them at home or because these are more authentic. But I didn't like them. They were very heavy and doughy like a dense donut hole. The sausage and and accompanying mustard was great. The service and coffee were good too. I would skip the ableskivers and order a regular meal and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The food is overpriced for what you're getting, except the aebleskiver. I was like: $10 for a sausage? That's absurd. They give you sauerkraut and other sides, but I can't wrap my head around it. Their sandwiches are thick, but very small. Don't get me wrong, it tasted good, but the price wasn't justified (Even if it is a Danish meal) aebleskiver are basically large donut holes drizzled with jelly. They're cheap and they almost taste like spherical funnel cake. I liked it. It tastes better warm.

  • Catherine C.

As we were walking around Solvang, my mom says "We gotta try that - everyone's crowded around there!" So I went to go check it out... 3 Aebleskivers topped with powdered sugar and raspberry jam for $3.60. Sounds pretty cheap for some exotic Danish dessert! It's just a fancy schmancy name for Danish pancake balls. Warm and fluffy, but nothing special. It's the perfect tourist trap for someone like me. But hey, it was only $3.60.

Service was kind of slow considering they weren't that busy. We came in to try the famous aebleskivers and Danish sausage. The sweetness of the aebleskivers went well with the savoriness of the sausage. A good combo together. Like everyone else has already stated, the aebleskivers were basically pancake balls drenched in raspberry jelly and dusted with powdered sugar. If you're in the area, definitely something you should try at least once.

I'm torn with the low rating. I remember this place back when I was a kid; but what do you know when you're a kid? All I remember is the tasty aebleskivers and danish sausage, so we were kinda on a nostalgic outing. The wait was about 15 minutes. Being a holiday weekend, there were a ton of people, so that wasn't bad at all. Spent some time looking at hats next door :) We were finally seated and the menu really doesn't have a good breakfast combo. Everything seemed to be served a la carte and was brought to us that way too. The aebleskivers came out first, nice and hot, three of them on a plate with raspberry jam and powdered sugar (mine barely had any at all; but whatever). After we all ate one we slowed down because we wanted to eat it with the sausage. Two of the four of us also wanted eggs. The sausages came out, warm almost cold. The eggs finally came out. My mom was so mad she commented on the cold sausages and the lady said they just came out of the steamer. No way! She was kind enough to bring out hot ones and those were good! After eating a hot one, I realized that yeah, they were cold. There's a hug difference. At least the eggs were hot and cooked properly. The service sucked so bad. My mom has been coming here for years and was really upset. So much for a good returning memory... we certainly didn't come back the next day. Poor mom, she was looking forward to these for months too. The aebleskivers are fabulous! Carbs and sugar oh my! Order them at the window and spare yourself the trouble. (You can always buy the sausages at the market!)

DO NOT COME HERE TO EAT ANY OF THEIR CUISINES!!!! Repeat DO NOT COME HERE. Their food quality is very very very very poor. JUST DO NOT COME HERE!!! You will regret!!!!!!!! First of all, they use pre-made frozen foods on every single dish you could easily find from cheap grocery store (not even costco level!) I wouldn't really care if it still tasted ok but HECK NO. It tasted like crap .................. Their sausage, meatball, and veggies especially tasted like rubber ball. They did not even contain real meat inside lol! Go ahead try this restaurant if you want to successfully ruin your day :D It was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my whole entire life. Im not going back to this filthy, dishonest restaurant ever again. It was such a BAD trip. Now i even hate going to Solvang. I don't think i will ever going to Solvang again because of here..

This is the place to go for chicken and waffles! My wife loves the patty melt and fries. The wait staff is very good, but remember, this is a tourist destination city and when crowded the wait times increase, so quit complaining - you're on vacation in Solvang. When you're visiting Solvang and want great food at a very reasonable price, let the Solvang Restaurant be your go to place! Don't pass it by, you'll be making a huge mistake!

    (5)
  • Yi-Lin K.

Aebleskivers! Cute name but I wish they were almost as interesting tasting as they sounded! It is basically some dough balls served with jam and ice cream. A little too sweet for my taste buds and perhaps not worth the wait (if it is more than 20mins maybe you could spend your calories elsewhere). Then again, if you're up for something new, this is probably the best place we saw in Solvang for aebleskivers, judging by the lines and the general reviews. .Not bad, but not something I'd go back for. Kinda made Solvang feel like an amusement park, and these were like the churros or sweet things you get and u have while walking. Wish they had some tables (even high top tables would be nice) where we could eat.

This is not a dog-friendly restaurant as listed. That is, of course, unless they are referring to HOT dogs which are about the only "food" served other than desserts. And our poor dog was not welcome anywhere. No patio or outdoor seating to accommodate our puppy : (

  • Ryan A.

Not great, not terrible. I'm by no means a connoisseur of Scandinavian food, but I felt like everything was simply "okay". Meatballs and Danish sausage were nice and comforting. Aebleskiver felt like donuts rolled in jam. Unfortunately, this seemed to be one of the few establishments that served any semblance of Scandinavian food, so I suppose it's alright. Couldn't shake the feeling that this was just a diner that someone slapped Danish decorations on.

I stopped in because I was told I should try the aebleskivers. When I ordered, the waitress, (finding I had never had them) suggested I try the traditional sausage as well. I said yes, and was very happy I did so. Both items were perfectly cooked, and very delicious. I honestly can't suggest any improvements to the food, or the service.

This place was suggested to us the night before at the Wondering Dog Wine Bar. Was told to get the aebelskievers and the danish sausage. So the aelbelskievers were pretty much pancake balls with a raspberry sauce on top. Nothing special, I'd rather have a beignet. The danish sausage was pretty small, size of a hot dog kinda. It didn't really have much flavor either. They bring it with a sweet mustard sauce that they make there. Didn't really add much to it though. Eggs and hashbrowns were pretty standard.

Last minute family trip to Solvang. I came here only once as a youngin' but always thought it was boring! This time I came back with a better attitude, grown-up! Thanks to Yelp, being the fatty I am, I quickly looked for food. I had seen a bunch of reviews for this spot and decided the only thing to do would be to actually see for myself. I tried one order of AEBLESKIVERS. Yes, do that for yourself right there. They were an ooey gooey delight! Being satisfied I then proceeded to enjoy the scenery in Solvang. Maybe as a kid if I would have had these aebleskivers I probably wouldn't have been so hangry and bored!

Food was good, service SUCKED! Except for the young lady who got our drinks. The aebleskivers were good though! A smile goes a long way! Too bad our server and the woman who appeared to be a manager couldn't find their smiles today! It's hard to leave a tip when a sour puss throws the food in front of you.

The jam is super sweet and they drench the ableshivers so ask for it on the side so you can control how much you want to add. Extra $3 for two scoops of vanilla ice cream to make it a la mode but it tastes better this way!

Off the beaten path from your drive to No Cal, you may find yourself in a small town off the 101...Solvang. Solvang Restaurant is off the Main Street and on Copenhaven Drive. Famous for its aebleskivers or Danish raspberry donuts with powdered sugar. I opted to have the club with split pea soup. The soup needed some extra salt for more flavor, but the sandwich was typical of a diner club sandwich. Along with the meal I had a side of Danish sausage made of veal and pork. Just the right amount of spices...just shy of a bratwurst. The service was fine and followed the guidelines of A B C service. The restaurant itself looked like something out of a winter wonderland...in Denmark. I highly recommend coming here just for the Aebleskivers, but if comfort food you seek...look no further.

This place strikes me as food that may be in a nursing home. The waitress seemed irritated by us. She never smiled, or engaged us other than to take our order. The abelskivers were ok, but I wouldn't go back here.

People line up here for the aebleskivers. The last time I was here, I was one of those people! You can buy three for about $4. I don't remember if I came here the time before last, but since I don't remember I am writing a review now so that my future self can read this the next time I am in Solvang. The aebleskivers are not thaaat good. It's just bread with strawberry syrup and powdered sugar. Self, you would enjoy yourself more if you went to Koreatown Galleria and bought yourself a Cheese Danish. But if you want a cheese danish now, head over to the Danish Mill Bakery. The cheese danish isn't as good, it's too salty but I guess it'll do.

Abelskiver was 5 stars hands down , but not so much for my meal. We came here to look for lunch anywhere because it's my mom's birthday. I ordered a Danish Dip sandwich with a cup of clam chowder on the side , was pretty good. My mom's meal not so much , she ordered a half cornbeef sandwich , and a cup of soup. Her sandwich was literally half of an ordinary sandwich slice, and that got me upset and on top of that their cornbeef looks like ham you can get from the 99 cents store ! Like seriously I mean a lot of people may like the food here but it just doesn't live up to my standards

  • Tiago P.

And you come here for Aebleskivers right? It's worth the time to get there. The hospitality was nice... we sat at the counter. Had trouble finding the online menu but its pretty much a dinner with some danish dishes. I did get the Danish sausage sandwich in the croissant with coleslaw side. was good with the spicy mustard and no mayo for me. Cup of beef and bean chili... good too. Wife got the turkey with cranberry... not much flavor in the cranberry unfortunately.

Aebelskivers are OK. Thankfully they're cheap or else you'll feel ripped off. The restaurant is OK as well. There's a lot of seating, and when we went for early dinner it wasn't crowded at all. I had tried the Danish hot dog, and my husband had a sausage sampler plate.

    (3)

The Danish round pancakes rock this joint, served with a berry sauce that resembles thin raspberry jam. I had a side of bacon whose cure profile was a tad too salty. Stick with the pancakes and you are good to go.

It came highly recommended but unfortunately we cannot recommend! While the food was amazing, the service was terrible! Our server seemed to not care at all. She appeared to be someone who was just there to pick up a check. Next time we visit Solvang we will go some where else! Customer service is essential!!!!!!

We always come here for lunch when in Solvang, and mainly for a single reason. aebleskivers ! They are excellent and so is the home made raspberry jam they are topped with. They are so popular that the wise restauranteurs opened up a walk-up window out front so you can walk-up and get aebleskivers without having to sit down inside to get them. A single order has 3 balls topped with jam and powdered sugar. They're a nice snack while walking around town. If you love them like we do, you can buy the mix and jam from them and take it all home. We even re-order from them on the website. The restaurant menu also contains several traditional Danish items along with the usual diner fare. The service has always been fast and friendly. If you're in Solvang, at the very least walk up to the front window and get the Aebleskivers. I think you will like them.

The portions sizes were a little small. But all the food was delicious. If you decide to stop in I would highly recommend the coleslaw. It tasted very fresh. My girlfriend who normally doesn't like coleslaw even enjoyed it. Solvang is a great city to visit to meander through all the shops. Similar to pikes place market up in Seattle.

The service here is pretty great, fast, attentive, and our waiter was so nice and courteous! The food, though, wasn't too great. Maybe it's just not my taste but I didn't really enjoy my open faced sandwich plate, though it was very filling!

First and for most. I came her a year ago and the food was good. We can and heard the place switched hands. And BOY CAN YOU TELL! The waitress was slightly rude. She seemed like she was not interested in her job what's so ever. But that's OK. Maybe she's having a bad day. Right? Well we give our order. My fiance and I order the danish meatballs and my grandmother ordered a danish hot dog. The first thing we notice is the cook slapping food onto a plate from metal bins. Then throws the plate in the microwave. Food took less than 3mins to get to us. Mid you everything tasted like it came from a convalescent hospital. Good for my grandma right? Anyways. All I can say is we came all the way from long beach to here and would not come back for their food again. We have learned our lesson. Good thing solvang has some pretty awesome bakery's. Right? :)

The staff was efficient and abelskevers was served quick. It was just ok, nothing remarkable except it looked sooo good. I went there for the experience. Ambiance is danish. They offer the recipe for a fee in cd form. They have the mix too. It is one of the must try in solvang!

I came here just because I had heard that they had the most authentic Æbleskiver here. (aebleskiver) you know the little donut like fluffy pastry that is friend in a cast iron pot with the little round holes in it and they are served with name and powder sugar?!!! Super good and amazing! If you find yourself wandering Solvang come here. The food is really good as well.

    (5)
  • Rebecca P.

I liked the ambiance of this place. It felt like the dingy, homey diner while lost in Danishland. That said, their claim to fame is the Æbleskiver, and although I thought they were decent (like a pancake that has a dose of doughnuttiness--3 stars), I wasn't blown away. My Æbleskivers were a bit cold and, although the dish is cheap, it's by no means a meal. You'll leave hungry if you thought you were getting breakfast. Meanwhile, the other dishes are a bit pricey and only mediocre (I tasted a few of my co-eaters' meals, and well, bleh). Bottom line: If you want to try the Æbleskiver, go ahead. Just know you will likely need a few orders to fill you up... but that's fine, as there are bakeries aplenty to serve you other goodies.

We came here for 1 purpose only to try their famous Aebleskivers. Wait was a bit, but worth it. They were fried golden crisp topped with Raspberry jam & powdered sugar the traditional way to have them. They were so fluffy inside & delicious. I liked the slight tartness form the raspberry jam. Make sure you have a drink because you can go to sweet overload within minutes of consumption like us. Totally worth the price for how much you get.

The inside décor looks like a German Hofbrau. The place needed some German music. Very disappointed in the limited selection of beer. Wine was generic San Joaquin Valley (CA) "plonk". We were there for lunch. Ordered different German entrees. Quality was okay ..... nothing to do cartwheels.

This place is one of those popular restaurants that quite a bit of people look for in a touristy area. The regular food was decent, but their thing here is the homemade Aebleskivers! These remind me of a beignet or malasada. We had the chicken and waffles, Danish sandwich sampler, and chicken fried steak. The sandwich sampler is alright in my opinion, nothing really special to comment. The chicken fried steak was pretty good. The chicken and waffles, the waffles were Belgian waffles so that was nice and the fried chicken was seasoned pretty well but fried way too long in my opinion which made it hard to eat for some parts. We had an Aebleskiver ala mode style...yummy! The place was packed when we went, the service was ok. They could use an extra server or two, our lady was nice but seemed to be stretched pretty thin running around to all the tables. The nice thing about this place is, you don't have to dine inside to get an Aebleskiver. They have a separate window outside to get one. The line does get pretty long though, plan to wait a bit for one in that line.

The food was mediocre. I shared a grilled chicken and sundried tomato sandwich with fries with my friend. It was soggy, covered in mayonnaise, and the fries only tasted of old grease. The waffle we had wasn't bad, but my dining hall could make one just as good if not better. Not to mention, our waitress was abrasive and unaccommodating.

In short, my aebleskivers were raw in the middle... i'm sure they would've been fantastic and fluffy, but they were raw and dense. Like I always say, YOU WON'T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!

Can't come to Solvang and not have aebleskivers, right? Yay for Solvang Restaurant having a window outside the restaurant where you can order aebleskivers to go! I probably wouldn't have noticed them if it wasn't for the line standing outside... which I quickly joined :P The line moves decently quickly, and the aebleskivers come for the reasonable price of three for $3.40! They come topped with raspberry jam and powdered sugar, and you can get it with ice cream for $2.80 extra. We just got the normal aebleskivers. They're just okay... basically a pancake but in a round ball instead of flat. It is intriguing to see how they make it round... easier said than done since my mum has tried it herself on several occasions and they never came out looking all that great :P I would have preferred it with a different flavoured jam, but it was still pretty good with the raspberry jam and powdered sugar. But now that I've had them, and seeing as they are not all that great, I don't think I'll be back.

Did the Abelskivers out their To Go window. Delicious and fun. Not sure I would eat at the place as there are several other places that probably have better food but these tasty little pancake alternatives are outstanding. Love the berry jam with these as well. Stop by and get these as they are great. Can't speak to the rest of the food as we just picked these up as a snack as we wondered around.

My sister and I decided to take a little day-cation around the Central Coast and one of the towns we made sure to pop by was the amazingly picturesque Solvang. While we were walking around and checking out the amazing architecture and souvenir shops, I whipped out my handy dandy Yelp app and searched for a place to have lunch. Solvang Restaurant is famous for their traditional Danish desserts, so without looking any further, we made a B-line to the entrance. Solvang Restaurant is a small place with a handful of booths and tables along with a counter that stretches down the wall. The entrance area even has a little gift shop area where they sell all the fixings to make your own Danish desserts! We were given one of the booths toward the back of the restaurant with a great vantage point to people watch. The menu has enough to satisfy even the pickiest of tourists with plenty of burgers, sandwiches, and other American goodies. But hey, when you're in the "Danish Capitol of America" you better eat some Danish food. I landed on the open face sandwich plate (open face tasting plate of four sandwiches -- ham, Tilsit Danish cheese, roast beef, and meatball -- all on pumpernickel bread) with potato salad. The dish was humungous with the perfect size of each half sandwich. The ham came topped with peas, carrots, and mayo, the Tilsit had a big carrot, the meatball was paired with beats, and the roast beef had a generous amount of pickles on top. Each sandwich was equally delicious, but the real standout of the day was the wonderful Aebleskivers dessert! Aebleskivers are basically pancake balls topped with strawberry jam, vanilla ice cream, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. These warm cake balls were so amazing, my sister and I did everything but lick the plate. If you get a wild hair, these delicious babies seem simple enough to make at home. The small gift shop I talked about earlier sells all the required ingredients! Solvang Restaurant is a total tourist trap but, regardless, it still serves up good food at great prices. But seriously, you absolutely must try the Aebleskivers. We got it as dessert, but it can be made a meal by ordering the side sausage to go along with it. You won't be disappointed!

I was extremely disappointed with the service and the Aebleskivers here. When we walked up to the restaurant we saw a sign that said to order the Aebleskivers inside. When we went in we were greeted by a very rude young girl who said "what do you want?" When I told her we wanted to order some Aebleskivers she responded with "you better get in line or else!" By this time there was a few more people coming in and she proceeded to yell at all of us "line up against the wall!" I honestly want to leave by this time but I wanted to try these Aebleskivers I had read about. Aebleskivers were a big let down. The best way to describe them is as raw pancake balls with jam and a bunch of powder sugar piled on top. The Aebleskiver balls were bland and the jam wasn't any better. There are plenty of other places to eat in Solvang with better service and treats. I would skip this place.

You will need to double check your bill before paying!! This review is only about the terrible service. The waitress was very rude; she threw all of dishes on our table without apologizing. She also "made a mistake" by adding $10 extra dollars on our bill!! So, double check your bill here!!

Food wasn't that great in all honesty. My Combination order with meatball, sausage, red cabbage , masked potatoes and steamed veggies was subpar. And for about $14 a plate? They have got to be kidding me, that s#!÷z was tiny! My companions sandwiches, chicken salad and Philly cheese stake had the same comments. The Aebleskiver was good but the raspberry jam was toooo sweet. The server for our table was RUDE, like no patience, just walked away when we were still deciding how many orders of Aebleskiver we should get, and she forgot the kids meal that we ordered and blamed it on the kitchen. NOT cool lady. Won't go back for the restaurant, maybe just for the to go Aebleskivers. MAYBE.

So according to my family we had to stop here because of their famous Ebelskivers. In short, they're a like Danish "beignets" or if you're Hawaiian, malasadas. These fluffy deep fried creations are served with raspberry jam & powdered sugar. Very tasty!!! Definitely one of the things to try here at Solvang.

Aebleskiver servings come in 3 but the restaurant was kind enough to let us order 4 for $5! Tastes like corn bread with jam; nomz :)

We've made it a point to stop here on all our trips up the coast, but this time we weren't as impressed as the others -- so yeah, 4 stars instead of 5, definitely not a deterrent. The Aebleskivers (round pancake balls with powdered sugar & jam on top) are totally still worth it, so I say if you just want to grab some of those (less than $4 for 3) & some damn fine coffee, you are golden. I found the Danish sausage a bit too bland, however. And the food is really large, so consider splitting. They also have a kids' menu, but the choices are limited. Kids just want an order of aebleskiver anyway. The breakfasts are all super tasty if you want to deviate from the main attraction. My kids love the Danish pancakes. As for lunch, word on the street is that the Club is a great choice. The restaurant is cute with Hans Christen Anderson murals over each of the booths & the staff were pleasant and quick. They like a fast turn-over here, which worked for us. The wait was short too -- which is a plus considering the lines you see at some places in the morning.

Went here awhile back but loved it! The aebleskivers were DELICIOUS! Covered in raspberry jam and some powdered sugar, they were perfect, warm balls of yummy dough :) Would definitely recommend coming here if you're in Solvang!

One word - Aebleskivers! The Danish version of a jelly doughnut. It's very yummy and a Solvang must. These amazing treats can be purchased in the restaurant or at the convenient take out window. You can watch them make them through the window which kids ( and adults) find fascinating. The restaurant has good food overall and the service is very friendly. The kitchen is super quick. We had our food within 10 minutes of ordering. Coffee is always be refilled which is the reason for the 5th star. Don't miss this place!

  • Rohlin A.

This was my first destination when we reached Solvang for one reason ... Aebleskivers! Rohlinism: Patience maybe a virtue, but it doesn't satisfy a craving! What is an aebleskiver ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ) you ask? An aebleskiver is a Danish pancake (usually served during Christmas and Easter in Denmark) in the shape of a sphere. Somewhat similar in texture to American pancakes crossed with a popover, aebleskivers are solid like a pancake but light and fluffy like a popover. Aebleskivers are not sweet themselves but are traditionally served dipped in raspberry, strawberry, lingonberry or blackberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The origin of these little balls of delight is unknown, but I will share with you a somewhat amusing theory I read: "Back in the good old days, when the Vikings were roaming up and down the coasts of Europe and the waters of the Atlantic, one band of these Vikings had been particularly hard hit in battle, so, when they got back on their ship with their horn helmets and shields all dented and banged up, they decided to have one of their favorite dishes to help them regain their strength --- pancakes!! In those days they did not have modern conveniences such as frying pans, so, they greased their shields and poured the pancake batter on them over the fire but, guess what!" And now I know why they dip the aebleskivers in raspberry jam ... to represent the blood spatters from the shields they cooked on! Not sure what the powdered sugar represents. Who knew the history of a Danish pancake could be funny and gross at the same time? The Solvang Restaurant serves Danish and American cuisine. The decor of the restaurant includes handcrafted woodwork by the late Ferd Sorensen, who was knighted by the Queen of Denmark in recognition of his fine workmanship. Danish proverbs decorate the interior beam work and the booths are embossed with authentic crests of Danish Villages. Murals of Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales decorate the walls as well as works by local artists. To be honest, until this visit I had never even set foot inside this restaurant, even though I have ordered aebleskivers here on many occasions. There is a very handy window which allows you to order your dough deliciousness directly from the kitchen. On this particular day, the window didn't open until after I had ordered my food and sat down at a nearby table. Laina for some odd reason doesn't enjoy these little balls of mana from heaven, but I know someone who does ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ) and she happily helped consume the aebleskivers. There are several places in Solvang that serve aebleskivers, but I like the convenience of the kitchen window (when it is open) and the service is always quick and efficient. The guy who served me on this occasion noticed the kitchen had forgot the powdered sugar before he handed my order over and quickly sent it back. Why would I go anywhere else when I love the product and service here? If you eat one Danish thing while you are visiting Solvang, make sure it is the aebleskivers at the Solvang Restaurant!

I cannot come to Solvang without stopping here. Luckily, we really don't have to wait for seats when we visit even on the super busy summer weekends. We have had to wait a few times but not that long so that's an extra plus. Customer service is always on point, price is right, and the foods always piping hot and delicious. There is something about their bacon that's just so good! This place has the perfect combination of simple American cooking and the Danish delicacies you may want to try. Solvang has a lot of restaurant choices that can be too much for tourists or visitors to handle. I would recommend this place over all of the others to make your trip easy.

Hmm, from the looks of the hustle and bustle of this restaurant, you'd think the food was great but in my opinion it was mediocre, if that. Sadly, the aebleskivers weren't even that great. The wait to be seated was average, the service was slow, not very attentive. My family was split into two different tables, across from one another but two different servers. Our server seem to be much slower than theirs. When our food came out it wasn't as hot as I thought it should be and by the time the server had brought out cream for my coffee (which I asked for when our drinks came) it was already cold. Lastly, because we were seated toward the back, next to hallway, near the bathrooms, it wasn't pleasing having people standing around waiting to use the single stall bathroom.

3 stars for delicious abelskiever (not sure on the spelling). We ordered them to go.. I loved the raspberry jam and highly recommend them. My husband thought they were overrated, but still good. The customer service wasn't great. The person who helped us wasn't too friendly. Also, some of the neighboring shops have rules that don't allow abelskiever to be brought inside. I could see why because red jam probably isn't the easiest thing to clean. Just wanted to throw that out there so people are prepared!

  • Lucy W.

We really enjoyed our first meal in Solvang. Located right in the middle of downtown Solvang. We obviously had to order some aebelskievers and they were ok....I actually think I can make them a little better (I've been practicing lots with the pan we bought) we also got the corn beef hash and that was fantastic!!! so yummy. What we loved the most was the environment, totally ate it up as tourists. I'm not usually into touristy places but this was just so cute and exactly what I wanted from a diner style Solvang restaurant. They also sell a number of aebelskiever pans which we bought the smallest/cheapest one and pancake mixes (but we didn't get any). All in all a great fun and a good meal.

I went here in October, and left very dissapointed. I'm Danish, I moved from Denmark to the U.S. in 2009, so I believe I should know how an æbleskive should be like. And the three I got here were far from authentic! They were very dense and not fluffy like the "real" ones. The dough seemed very different too, so the æbleskiver were not flakey like they are supposed to be. It almost seems like they roll balls of dough and fry them. Not like you are supposed to, where you cook one side first, flip them so the remaining liquid dough can form the other half of the æbleskive. Sad to say, but the frosen æbleskiver from Trader Joe's are more authentic... Service was extremely slow too. The waitress passed us several time, on her phone texting, before she came to take our order. It was early in the morning, so only a few other people in the restaurant, but it still took a long time before we got our æbleskiver. We had to wait again at the register when we wanted to pay. Not because there was a line, but because the staff were busy talking to each other. I think it's time for the owners to take a trip to Denmark and learn how to make æbleskiver.

After hearing about the ableskiver we decided to check it out. You can get regular food out of the restaurant proper, but if you're looking for just some abelskiver or a sausage then you can head on and grab them to go in the window. They abelskiver is made fresh, and they sell them so fast that you can be pretty sure you're getting them right off the grittle. One order gives you three large, steamy plump balls of dough, smothered in raspberry jam and powdered sugar. The line for the window can get pretty long on days when Solvang is crowded. I bit into my doughy ball and it tasted exactly like... the corn batter part of a corn dog. So much that it was actually really weird that it was covered in sweet jam and sugar. I felt like it really needed a hot dog in the middle, not sugar. So I'm going to be super honest here - I didn't actually like the abelskiver. But everyone else I split it with really liked them; the jam was nice and tangy.

The food is good. Don't get me wrong. But it's okay, it's not the greatest Danish fare in the world, but it also isn't the worst. The atmosphere is nice, so I guess it's got that going for it. Nice decor, nice staff, good food. It's a nice, quaint three-star.

  • Christine L.

The only thing we ate here at the window was Aebleskivers! it was essentially a moist pancake in a ball. It is baked and not fried. We went light on the jam and did a la mode which made it better! i don't know about the food inside, but the Aebleskivers was definitely worth the stop. We shared 3 between two of us and it was more that filling for a few hours...and we can eat...

We just tried to eat here and we were told that we could not sit in the front by the window. The restaurant was not packed but they refused to serve us so they lost our business.

Arnie's Aebleskivers from the Take-Out Window I wasn't in the mood for average food peddled as Danish fare, but was recommended and excited to try the Aebleskivers from the take-out window. As others have duly noted, the extra $3 for a little vanilla ice cream seems proportionally steep, so we simply ordered the basic order of three Aebleskivers. If you don't know what these are, do not fear: you'll see other people eating them; you'll see a lady making them behind the glass; you'll see photos and drawings of them on the wall. I was imagining something along the lines of doughnut holes; I thought the exterior would be crispier. Instead, they were something like a soggy sweet cake in the shape of a ball, covered with straight up sugary raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Sweet + sweet + sweet. I'm so glad there were three of us to share the three balls. For $3.95, sure, give the Aebleskivers a try.

We walked in thirty minutes to closing, so we were a little hesitant on coming, but we've just arrived and we hadn't eaten lunch yet, so we decided to stay. First, our waitress was the best. She really made our time here enjoyable. I'm guessing those who were complaining about the service did not get our waitress, because she was really fun and happily engaged in conversation to all of the tables. Second, the food here is great even though I was unable to finish my vegetarian sandwich. First my boyfriend thinks he's from Russia because he discovered Kamchatka when we played Risk (the board game), but now he's certain he is a Viking after eating from this restaurant. He got the open face sandwich plate. Thanks Solvang. Not only do I have to convince my boyfriend he isn't from Russia, now I have to convince him that he's not Scandinavian.

Review is only for the ableskiebers (hope I spelled that right). Stopped in for a little detour and snack as a friend mentioned this to me before our trip. What a great stop. Solvang is a great little town with many shops, restaurants and bakeries. They have a walk up window to purchase these little beauties. We had a simple order with the berry sauce and also an order of the same a la mode. Let me tell you both were great but the a la mode was superb considering the great vanilla ice cream they used. YUM YUM YUM!!!! Make sure you stop by and get some. They are very filling

Passed by this store when we were walking around Solvang and saw a bunch of people waiting in line for something, so we decided to check it out. People were waiting for the aebleskiver, which we watched them make in the viewing window. Very unique dessert that I have never heard of until passing this store, so we decided to try it out! Tastes a lot like pancakes in a ball form, and it is topped with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Definitely something to try if you're in Solvang!

Stopped in for an order of the aebleskivers to go (3 for $3.40) to share with my husband. It was quick to order, however, it took quite some time for them to make the aebleskivers. They have a video playing in the front window of how to make aebleskivers and it looks like the aebleskivers are done in 5 minutes. My husband was waiting outside with our dog and he said that he probably watched the woman in the video make aebleskivers 4-5 times and couldn't understand what was taking so long for our order. We finally got our order (it probably took 20 minutes) and took them back to our hotel to eat. The aebleskivers were very good, but we couldn't finish all three of them between the two of us. The jam that comes with it is pretty tart, so it was just too much to eat. If you're in the area, I would recommend stopping in and getting aebleskivers, just be prepared to wait!

Aebleskivers are basically fried pancake batter with PBJ jam on top. They are hardly beignets. There's not really much fat either, so they're just a big sugar/starch bomb that won't go away. At least pancakes have some butter to break the bits apart. This stuff just joins hands, and refuses to leave. Expect to drink a LOT of water or milk with this stuff. Think "doughy soda-batter ball". That's an Aebleskiver. But I'm a Swede, for full disclosure. That said, I wouldn't change my description above. Walk away from them.

We went here on the recommendation of a gift shop down the street. Lunch was good, sandwiches were tasty. We had the famous Aebleskivers, and it was well-worth it. Service from the waiters was polite (rare!) and prompt. We came off season mid-week and didn't have to wait at all (note to self!). Only negative: we went to pay our bill and felt virtually ignored at the counter while two girls talked amongst themselves about (whatever) and did not acknowledge us while waiting for their conversation to end.

Went here for breakfast. Yikes. Food was real bad. The bacon? C'mon man! It really looked and tasted as if they'd cooked it the day before then heated it up and served. Burned and chewy at the same time? Pretty weird. Hash browns and eggs were....whatever. Bothers me that they have all these great looking jams/jellies for sale in the front, but at your table they serve you those individual Smuckers packets. Same with the coffee, why the fake creamer and not some real half and half? Cheap. Aebleskivers were fine I guess. Nothing special for all the hype. I imaged the dough would be lighter, but it was a bit dense, and just sweet on top of sweet. Service was fine, we were promptly greeted and asked for drink orders. With Paula's and Succulent just around the corner, I don't see any point in going here. Sorry :(

If Huell Howser says to try the aebleskivers at The Solvang Restaurant, then I absolutely have to try the aebleskivers at the Solvang Restaurant. Arrived in the quaint city of Solvang on a tour bus for the second day of the "Danish Days" festival. Having never had the opportunity to visit before, I used Huell Howser & Yelp/Yelp Talk to decide which places to visit. Main objective - Try aebleskiver at The Solvang Restaurant. The restaurant is bustling & modest, with an area for dining & a to-go area. Aebleskivers are actually $0.15 cheaper to-go, so you can save some tuppence if you're in a hurry. The bathrooms have only 1 toilet, so there can be quite a line if someone is taking too long dropping their aebleskivers. Giving the menu a quick once-over, I chose the creamed herring plate & the ubiquitous aebleskiver 3 pack. Creamed herring - The herring came w/ slices of tomato, onions, pickled beets & some dense bread. I found it to be delish. Now, I know people think it's fishy. However, it was fishy in the best possible sense of the word. Just as beef can be beefy, pork can be porky & chicken can be chicken-y, the herring was fishy with a mild taste to it. The sides greatly enhanced the flavor. It was good, and the portions were just right as I wasn't looking to get stuffed. yelp.com/biz_photos/p2MT… Aebleskivers - Warm & ready to eat. These were good! Small, pancake balls topped with raspberry & powdered sugar. The restaurant must make a killing off of these, because there's not much to them. Aebleskivers remind me of the Indian dessert, gulab jamun, except they're not sopping in rose-scented syrup. Instead, the sweetness comes from the raspberry & powdered sugar on top. I'm wondering if people can customize their aebleskivers with other toppings, such as nutella? While I wasn't completely blown away by them, I did enjoy them & will partake of aebleskivers again if I'm in Solvang on a future trip. yelp.com/biz_photos/p2MT… Of course, no touristy spot would be complete w/o souvenirs for sale - various jams, aebleskiver mixes & aebleskiver skillets to take home. yelp.com/biz_photos/p2MT… Service was friendly. The "Danish Days" festival attracted the crowds, but we were seated & attended to right away. A great way to start our trip in Solvang before window-shopping & checking out the parade. You must come have the aebleskivers at the Solvang Restaurant for your next, or perhaps first, trip to Solvang. If you love pancakes, crepes, blinis, basically any sweet pastry, then you're in luck if you try these culinary delights. Recommend! NOMNOMNOMNOM

We came here to try their aesbleskiver (Danish donuts) because I saw so many reviews regarding this. We didn't go into the restaurant and went to the go to window just to purchase these. I think they were somethere in the 3.99 I believe for three. I think if you are do not have a sweet tooth but want to taste it you can definitely share this with another person. It tasted like a pancake ball for the most part with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Dense texture....I thought it would be fluffy and light but it wasn't. Warm and sweet to the taste. I was good with two, I had to really work really hard to finish off all three, but I, personally don't have a sweet tooth so this could have been the reason. It isn't anything to rave over or die for but if in Solvang I would say if you are curious it is worth purchasing to say you had one of these at least once.

Aebleskivers = ball-shaped pancakes! I was passing through Solvang along Hwy 254 en route back to Los Angeles and stopped here for a quick breakfast. I ordered one order of aebleskivers to-go. Each order came with three small ball-shaped pancakes, dusted with powdered sugar and a side cup of raspberry jam for dipping. Other Yelpers have commented on the hit-or-miss quality, but mine were luckily piping hot and soft with a spongy pancake texture. There was no filling in the middle so I used the jam provided. Jam was needed, although pretty sweet, as the aebleskivers were dry-tasting if eaten alone. I think they would have been just as good if dipped in maple syrup. Comparing to past experiences, I've had custard and jam-filled aebleskivers before. They were half the size of these plain aebleskivers at Solvang Restaurant. Plain or filled? I'd rather have custard or jam-filled aebleskivers. Still, these were pretty good, plain as they were. Price: $3.40. Credit cards accepted.

Breakfast places in Solvang tend to be all the same- except the Solvang Restaurant has aebleskivers!! For sure the highlight of our visit here! If you don't know what an aebleskiver is, it's kind of like a fried round donut, crispy on the outside, but deliciously hot and buttery on the inside. They're usually served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. They're wonderful and decadent. The Solvang Restaurant has a little window where you could just order aebleskivers. As for the rest of the place- it's kind of a run down family-friendly joint. The breakfast was ok- the omelets and potatoes were a little greasy for me, but otherwise everything was fine. The aebleskivers were so good- that's the only reason I would give this place 4 stars- otherwise the rest of the food was a 3.

On a blazing July weekend, after strolling cute danish stores decided to stop here for some aebleskivers and lunch. Got seated right away ordered and waited for the aebleskivers :-) It was so yummy with the icecream on top and raspberry jam on the bottom [ yelp.com/biz_photos/solv… . Delicious and kept digging in. Its a must-stop-over restaurant if you are in Solvang. They are prepared all throughout the day and you don't have to dine-in to grab these delicious dessert.

The service was really bad here. Nobody greeted us as we walked in and when we sat down the waitress was very rude. It felt like we were rushed out of there. It seemed as though everyone there was in a bad mood and they did not care about customer service. The food was ok but I'm sure you could find another place in Solvang to eat at with better service and better food. Not with your time!

Service was meh. The æbleskivers are not authentic. Sadly, the frozen ones at Trader Joe's are much better. I am pretty sure they do not use the pan. The æbleskivers are so dense that it's almost as if they either make the batter too thick, or they roll the dough into balls and bake/fry the bread. To make matters worse, they smother their oversized æbleskivers with too much jam. Would be much better if the jam was on the side, and only the powder sugar was on the æbleskivers. I would rather pay more for the authentic, airy smaller traditional æbleskivers, than a lazy non-traditional version. Funny thing is they sell a variety of the pans (to make æbleskivers) and the prices are very affordable.

My reviews are usually a bit lengthy and in depth, but with this place I don't really feel the need. I'm no expert in Scandinavian cuisine but it appears to follow traditional and long held recipes so authenticity really isn't the issue. For me, the issue was just that the food isn't that exciting. Nothing we had was anything to complain about, it all tasted moderately appealing and reasonably high quality, but it was forgettable. The pea soup, the sausage and Tilsit sandwhich, the steak, it all was just 'meh' as a lot did kids say. We even tried the Ableskivers everyone always mentions and yes they are great but honestly, they are made impressive mostly by the jam that accompanies them rather than by their own flavor alone. The service was decent, it was fairly clean, but none of the food was really worth remembering.

Well. Aeblerskiver is yummy indeed. But to me it's more like a giant Japanese sweet tacoyaki without taco. Or a spherical pancake to ya'll Americans.

Good food, had the chicken fried steak and eggs with hash Brown's and 2 eggs scrambled, ( now for you ass hats that complain about BLAND food get over it that's what salt and pepper are for ) the food was hot and served fast the restaurant was full, the decor is s shea danish old but fits the area.

Stopped in for breakfast while in Solvang with our car club, we got right in and had a table for 10. Great food, service and prices. One hint, go early before all the sleepy heads wake up and come for breakfast. Before 8 is best.

After lunch & wine tasting in Paso Robles, we continued south-bound to our next destination: Solvang. I have always wanted to go to this famous town & I even streamed the movie "Sideways" before the trip. I did my usual internet research & found out about this delightful "pancakes" called æbleskivers. I was very intrigued but was disappointed since they seemed to only be available during breakfast time. When we finally made it to Solvang (the GPS took us in a completely different route) & finally got to wander around the surprisingly busy streets, I was fondly greeted by the sight of people holding paper trays of fluffy æbleskivers. I quickly identified the source & got myself an order Upon first inspection, there was a lot of jam and powdered sugar on top. Luckily, it wasn't super sweet. The actual pastry was not too dense & reminded me of something between pancake & old-fashioned donut. The one thing I really wish I could've had was for the pastry to be warm. This was a good introduction to Danish cuisine but I don't think it was the best introduction. Since I don't know when I will go back to Solvang next, I better start looking for Danish restaurants that serve æbleskivers in my beloved home city.

In a recent trip to Solvang, I decided visit Pea Soup Andersen's restaurant. The food and service was amazing but there was one person who was very helpful, pleasant and hospitable to my family. She worked at the front desk next to the bakery and her name is Rose...Thank you Rose for making it such a memorable experience. We will be coming back soon...

Aebleskivers - good. They feel more like a breakfast food than a dessert to me, though, given the denseness of the cake, but no matter. Enjoyed the raspberry jam and powered sugar with the aebleskivers immensely.

pay the extra cash and get the Ableskiever's A LA MODE.. you'll regret it if you don't!

It's all about the aebleskivers! Order one of those and some tea and you'll be happy. The service was kind of poor as I felt rushed to finnish within a few minutes and leave, but I would still recommend trying the aebleskivers!!

Decent breakfast. The aebleskivers were good, especially with the jam but they are much better and fresh tasting during Danish Days when they do them in the street. Slop a little jam on them and they hit the spot though. The rest was kind of greasy and just ok. We usually like to eat at Paula's a few blocks away but the line was too long and we wanted to get on the road to taste some wine. Still looking for the sneak breakfast joint in the valley.

This is not fine dining. The aebleskivers are the only reason to come here. Boy are these goooood. The rest of the food is mediocre diner junk. Beware there may be a line out the door to get aebleskivers. You can do take out if you don't want to wait, but it's nice to sit and have them with coffee.

We chose this restaurant because it: a. said world famous b. there were a lot of asians inside. ;-) If the name of the restaurant was anything other than "Solvang Restaurant", I probably would have forgotten the name--it was that memorable. We split an order of Danish meatballs (two on a plate) that came with some mashed potatoes and some formerly frozen vegetables in a bag. The meatballs were smothered in brown gravy. Nothing great, but filling. We also ordered an order of the aebleskiver. They were pretty good and fresh. Like little, fluffy donut holes. Tasty. They were smothered in something that was reminiscent of raspberry jam. Decent. Overall good service. The waitress was really nice, and reminded me of a small town diner. Actually ... it is a small-town diner. ;-)

Breakfast is delicious here! You must try the aebleskivers! This was just what we were looking for for a cutesy coffee shop style breakfast. Friendly and fast service, too.

To be honest, I can't figure out why this place is "world-famous", or famous at all. The food was average, the service was bad, and the pastries ubiquitous. The inside isn't very appealing, and the prices are just average. The waitress was bitchy to our table, which was a mistake because myself and my friend also work in restaurants, and know how tips work. The woman at the register was equally rude.

ordered the Asbleskivers,.... it is what it says. A pancake ball. I was expecting more of a funnel cake taste, it wasnt, If you love pancakes, then you will love these things. The jam that they use has a hint of orange so it is slightly tangy rather than all sweet.

Had the Danish sausage and the meatballs for lunch. Totally comfort food and the Aebelskivers were awesome here too! They were big and fluffy and the raspberry sauce and powdered sugar made the dish awesome. No wonder there's a line outside to get them! Server suggested great items and the service was fast and friendly. Great place to eat on the main drag in Solvang!

aebelskiver.. totally overrated. 3 pieces for $2.95. Price was okay. The wait was wayyyy too long. 15 minutes to get 3 fried dough balls w/ raspberry jam and powdered sugar. It was grossly sweet. The powder sugar blew everywhere when a gust of wind came by. for sure it looks better than it tastes.

I always come here for breakfast when I'm in town. I love love love the ableskeevers! It's delicious and perfect with their danish sausages. Service is quick and efficient as they try to get as many people in and out through their doors.

Wow, you all are hard on the aiblescivers. However you spell that. Okay, they were really good but not worth the hype. The entire city isn't much but a tourist trap. We walked around a little and didn't see much worth seeing. We went to the Solvang restaurant and enjoyed our meal and the aiblescivers. I liked our meal so I don't know whats so bad.The waitress wasn't super customer service oriented but whatever. That's long gone these days. The restaurant was good. Not great, but if you are walking by it, go and eat there!

this review is also for the aebleskiver only. 1. how often do you have danish desserts? 2. it's not deep fried, and looks good, so why not? it's like a donut-hole-ish thing, with fruit jam and sugar. you can't really go wrong here.

  • Lo M.

really reallly bad service and impossibly even worse food....aside from the point of why the hell would you go to a tourist town that somehow reminds you of disneyesque fake fiberglass structures, the food and the people that work there are just horrible. I had the Scandinavian meatballs which make rancid Ikea meatballs look like gourmet cuisine. I was sitting at the counter so I had a partial view of the ancient kitchen and witnessed almost every dish that came out of there had a whirl in the microwave before it got served. Our waitress was a middle aged pissed off wench that had been stuck in a small town for too long who threw our food on the counter and never check back on us until I asked for the bill. We also tried the fried doughballs covered in raspberry goo which are apparently WORLD FAMOUS for being the most caloric food with the worst taste I mean how does something that fried taste so dull? sorry about the rant let me just put it like this... DON'T GO HERE IT SUCKS~sucks sooooo bad

We came here for lunch, I don't recommend the food, probably the most expensive worst tasting food we ate in town. However I highly recommend the Aebleskivers! You get three of these delicious things with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. They disappeared before I could even take a picture of them.

When my wife and I drive up the central California cost we always make a quick stop in Solvang. Why you ask do you stop in this Danish tourist trap that has nothing but overpriced Danish nick naks? For the Aebleskivers that is why. What is an Aebleskiver? It is a Danish round pancake, that is usually served with powdered sugar and Raspberry Jam. We tried them on a whim since they were selling them from a walk up window at the Solvang Restaurant and loved them. Are they the best in Solvang? I have no clue I haven't had the time to make this quest yet, maybe someday I will have the answer but right now I just don't know. As for the rest of the food in the restaurant, I have no clue we really aren't fans of most Danish fair, but damn they make a fine round pancake. You can also buy the Aebleskiver mix, pans, and the raspberry jam to enjoy them at home.

i only had the aebleskivers here and boy were they good!! im a fan of doughy bread food though, so this is right up my alley!! its basically a pancake in the shape of a ball topped with delicious jam and powdered sugar! ohhh yumm, these sure make a perfect snack!!

I haven't eaten inside yet, but this place has a window where you can get fresh aebleskiver to go. After 20+ years of taking my dad's word for it, we decided to try other aebleskiver in Solvang to see if the Little Mermaid really is the best. My dad was under the impression that no one else made their aebleskiver FRESH in front of your eyes, but his information must be out of date, as we could plainly see the aebleskiver being made in front of us in the window. In fact, we even had to wait a minute as she was finishing up a fresh batch. We got an order of 3 aebleskiver to go, and they were piping hot. As far as the aebleskiver themselves, they were fairly comparable to LM; they may not have been shaped as perfectly, but the taste was identical. The real difference was that the Little Mermaid serves the aebleskiver with thick, room temperature raspberry jam that you apply yourself, while the Solvang Restaurant serves them with a thin, syrupy, hot raspberry sauce poured on top. Erik liked it better that way; myself, I prefer the thick jam at LM, but it's good both ways. Other than aebleskiver, the menu here looked pretty good. They even had some more traditional Scandinavian breakfast items not found elsewhere, such as herring on toast. I would certainly come back here to try other items on the menu.

Solvang Restaurant is my favorite stop in Solvang. The ableskivers are the best. Jeff, the host/owner is super nice! Yes, it is a diner but for all the others who are comparing prices to $1.50 costo hot dog, you'll find the Solvang/Santa Barbara area a bit more expensive in general (unless you opt for fast food.

I didn't even know Solvang was famous for aebleskivers until some random person on the street saw my boyfriend and me walking by and asked if we had tried them (not even the lady at the visitor's center told us about them. Tsk... tsk...). We placed an order to go, and continued our trek around Solvang with the aebleskivers in hand as passers-by nodded in approval as they saw us feast on these delectable treats.

This place is just okay, the food is nothing to rave about. But the aebleskivers are good here, as others have mentioned, and it's cool to eat among the kitsch.

Got food poisoning from the Danish Meatball and Sausage combo. Aebleskivers were great, but stick to just those.

OMG!!! the pancake balls here (aka aebleskivers) are to die for!! please come here and taste them for yourselves...you want regret it! they're essentially pancake balls that have been fried, coated in raspberry jam and then powdered sugar. its a really yummy dessert for just around $3. there's usually a line because they are so amazingly delicious...but its definitely worth the wait and the line moves fairly quickly.

I only got their aebleskivers with raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. They were pretty good. It's too bad I had danishes before that. I was a bit overdosed on sweets. If I had known the danishes in Solvang were no different than danishes anywhere else I would have just gotten the aebleskivers and been happy.

Aebelskiver from the takeout window was yummy but the real star for me was their hot dog. Crunchy natural casing and a fresh homemade relish/cucumber garnish was out of this world. Better hotdog than Pink's in LA in my opinion.

Stumbled upon this place after a book dealer reccomended it to me. Its home of the famous danish specialty, the ableskeever (not sure i spelled it right) Its something between a doughnut, pancake, and waffle. AND BOY is it yummy. Served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar, its warm and fluffy. You can order them at your table or you can stop in at the window outside a grab some to go. It was a charming little restaurant with good service, and good food. The Omlets were awesome and the crepe like pancakes were so delicious. Stop for breakfast, or just for a taste of the ableskeever with coffee!

I've been reading the reviews here, and am so relieved to know that i'm not the only one who thinks both the service and food is lame here. Never met a nice waitress and their food is below average.
