This is the best Asian restaurant I have been to out here in sac. I'm impressed by the freshness of the fish; quality of the service too. I like the brightness; glass and see through, ambient. Great place !

Ordered the bento lunch box with salmon teriyaki and california roll. It really wasn't something to rave about, but I wasn't really expecting much to begin with. I also tasted the katsu donburi and was disappointed that they let the katsu become soggy (one of the biggest no-no's in my book). The service was great though, as the server checked up on us several times and was very attentive.

The food was good but not good enough to outweigh the service. Pretty sure it was the waitress not the kitchen making tipping a mental debate. We should have stayed at the bar which service wasn't good but not as bad. 20min for an oyster shooter. They growing the oyster? Wtf?! Struggled with the two to three. The food is very good. We really enjoyed it but service was abysmal.

I am a true Sushi lover. I don't order Teriyaki chicken at a sushi restaurant. I eat Sashimi. I have been to many many sushi restaurants and this is by far my very favorite. Why? Because its Oishii! The fish is fresh and very high grade. Many people that rate this place bad probably can't tell the difference between Tilapia and Red Snapper. Maybe people have become accustomed to eating low grade cheap fish. KCRA 3 did investigative journalism and found out about half the sushi restaurants in the nation are lying about the fish species they serve. That being said Mikuni passed with flying colors and not only served what they stated but it was a higher grade more expensive grade of fish. Read for yourself at kcra.com/news/15238831/d… Okay so back to the review. I have been to Mikuni about 50 times. I have been to the Midtown, Elk grove and Hazel locations. Midtown has a great hustle and bustle atmosphere for after work cocktails and sports games. The bar is very prominent. It has two floors. The bottom floor is usually noisy and crowded and the music can be a bit loud. I suggest if you want to be able to hear each other well, ask to be seated upstairs. The platters are an amazing value if you are with large groups of people. Priced at $65 they feature a good selection of sushi raw and cooked. 1 platter will feed about 5 people satisfyingly. My favorite platters are the B and D and occasionally when I have a jonesin for Sashimi I order the E platter. The main difference between the B and D platter is the Sea Steak with an avocado dip vs the seared albacore tuna with red sauce. My favorite rolls here are the Fair Oaks and Prosperity hand roll (although not all their chefs know how to make it since its Taro's roll). The Seared albacore tuna with spicy red sauce (not rooster sauce) is my favorite appetizer. It is perfectly seared on its outer layer but raw on the inside and the sauce compliments it to perfection. Many sushi restaurants attempt to make this but FAIL. For those that love the heat, order the 911 roll, which is Spicy Tuna with rooster sauce. If you think you were born in the flames and can eat a Phoenix for 4th meal, then order the 1822! This is the 911 roll with more sauce topped with Jalapeños. Its your funeral not mine. If you want to order something not on the menu..... Order a Hamachi Kama! You will not be sorry. This is the meat around the jawbone of the Hamachi and it is incredibly tender! They may or may not have it. So ask and you will not be sorry. So as a recap, if you want authentic sushi from high grade fish even by Japanese standards, if you want good atmosphere, great value, and most importantly great taste, this is your place. People stop hating, its madness. When I first moved to Sacramento, I used to wait for a table for 2-3 hours (they don't take reservations). We braved the mosquitoes and the pan handlers because its worth it. When we have parties we buy 3 or 4 platters to go and everyone can't say enough about it. I had a friend that was traveling in New York and he said he was dying for some sushi, the conversation finished by him saying "soon as I get back to the bay area I'm driving up and we're going to Mikuni cuz can't nobody touch them". Nuff said!

They have such a varied menu that no matter who comes, they will likely find something they will love. The food is always fresh and very creatively presented. We love coming here often! Our favorite sushi restuarant for sure.

Food is always excellent, the only thing that can really be spotty is the service. For the most part the servers are really solid, sometimes they can forget about you for long periods of time. Still much better than the Roseville location.

Oh Mikuni how I love thee! Let me count the ways.... BBQ Tuna, Pepperfin, flaming shrooms, freaky edamame, oooh yes! I know there are major Mikuni haters out there but I am a local and I absolutely LOVE Mikuni. Food is amazing! For family night we go to the Mikuni in Davis which is more kid friendly, when smoozing with the business peeps, I'm at downtown and when I'm with my girlfriends after work we head to Fair Oaks. I will heart Mikuni for life!

Keep in mind this review is based off of a college student who usually tries to keep my meals cheap. I went out to this location for a friends birthday and it is her favorite place and I have always heard good things about this place. Frankly, I am not a fan of the prices and I don't think you usually get your moneys worth. The bento box I ordered was at a reasonable cost, but was pretty weak and not very impressive. My friends did do some deal where they got a lot of sushi and that actually seemed like it was worthwhile considering they split it and even had to give some to us cause they were full.

I've been here a few times with a gf that lives far away and this is the most ideal middle ground we could ask for! Fun location, easy parking, and delicious food! I love birthdays here as well and the wheel upstairs is a fun little piece of flare too!

Best sushi rolls ever.... We start off with the 5 piece BBQ albacore tuna with only red sauce....Hands down best item on the menu. The Davinci Roll is my personal favorite unless they have the Al Pachino available(the say its seasonal). They both are light and zesty with a hint of citrus. We just tried the seared scallop on a rice patty last trip up there, not sure the name but it will be on the reorder list permanently. The service is great every time and it is worth the wait.

Great sushi! Great service! Really fantastic restaurant! Bento box is cheaper and also tasty but mikuni is superior by far!

Although I agree with most people on here that the Mikuni's on Hazel Ave. is better; everything taste-wise is the same at the downtown location. The Soprano roll is still brimming with delicious mushroom butter sauce, and the Incredible roll has that perfect level of heat. The fish is fresh, and the sauces are damn good...Screw all these sauce haters! As for the service, it's pretty on par with how busy they usually are at night. I'm not sure how it fares during the afternoon times. Overall, I've had some great birthday parties at Mikuni's and it's definitely a place I will frequent so long as I live in Sacramento.

I'm not really a sushi eater, so when I go with friends I normally get chicken teriyaki and tempera, and the No 1 box was all stuff I like to eat so that made it easy. I really like the vibe, I can see this place getting packed on the weekends because we were there on a Tuesday night and it was pretty packed, but we were sited right away. I would definitely go again.

When I'm in Sac, I usually eat here for lunch. This past weekend I brought a group of friends here for dinner on our way up to Tahoe. Nice and festive with a huge selection of rolls on the menu. A great place for groups. The wait was about 30 min on a Friday night. Great service and the food came out fast. One of my friends said the teriyaki chicken was as dry as cardboard. I would suggest sticking to the rolls over the bento boxes.

Most likely the best in Sacramento. They have some of the best rolls. Sunrise is a favorite

  • Markisha G.

I love this place. I live in the bay area and I wish every day we had one closer. My favorite rolls are: Scott, Train Wreck, Hang Loose, Folsom Lake. I am sure there are more, but I can't remember them all. I also love their seared tuna. Just love this place!

Good and fresh fish. I love the Train-wreck and Incredible rolls. Their poke salad is also really good.

  • Diego S.

This place rivals any of the better sushi places I've had in San Diego, so if you are up in this neck o' da woods, check it out. The only, I repeat only, con to the menu is the overwhelming variety. Some of the rolls are exactly the same minus a single ingredient, which leads to something like 50 or 60 rolls total. It took me twice as long as usual to order something and I barely made it back to my 1 hr metered parking spot.

  • Jeremy O.

Ebi Sake, tuna sliders, pimp my roll and some hot green tea and I am a happy man. It's hard to find a great sushi spot in Sacramento. Mikuni is definitely my favorite as far as quality goes. It isn't a cheap spot, but it is not as expensive as the high end sushi spots in LA or SFO. I give Mikuni a +1 star for being a good spot in Sac and being better vs. their local competitors.

Man.... been here for an hour plus tonight and still haven't received our food... service sucks, waiter went MIA... if I wasnt hungry id leave by now but already waited hella long.... last time at this joint..

Always will be the best if Sac. Taro is a sushi genius! Always coming up with different ideas and adding to the menu. Real hard worker and gives back to the community. The fish they use here is always fresh, that's why they can charge a bit higher than others. I'd rather pay extra for quality. Nothing but love for this place!

DO NOT COME HERE FOR LUNCH!! I was here on 8/6/09 for a birthday luncheon and the service was extremely slow. One would think that a restaurant downtown where most of their lunch clients are on break would be more catering.?. My coworker spoke to the manager about the poor service and the response was, "oh okay". As if to say... And why are you telling me this?- very rude! No tip for you. Overall, unless you don't mind 1 1/2 hour lunches and mediocre over sauced sushi- go for it.

You can never go wrong with Mikuni's. We love their BBQ White Tuna! My hubby always gets Chirashi and it never fails him. I tried their Marilyn Monroe roll with the scallops and it was super delicious! Great kids menu with their choice of 2 items, how can they not like that. Their service is always excellent. Great place for a big party to go before a show at the Music Circus or the Convention Center.

Pros: Consistently amazing food; fun place to go; great service. Cons: Expensive, just like all other great sushi places Summary: Whether you're into standard nigiri/ sashimi dishes or the California spin with lots of colorful sauces, they have it all and its all outstanding!

As a vegetarian sushi eater, there weren't a ton of options. However, the jazzed up edamame was delicious and the ginger was fresh.

I'd been meaning to try Mikuni ever since I moved to town, and finally got the chance to check it out on Valentine's Day! After all, there's no time better to go to a new place, when you know it's going to be completely packed, right? We went toward the end of Happy Hour, and chose to sit at the bar. First off, great service from the two bartenders! Prompt greeting/service, and the food and drinks came out relatively quick. We ordered a bunch of items off the HH small bites menu, and were quite satisfied with our picks. If you're going to get edamame, make sure to get the "freaky" version which comes seasoned with chili and salt. I got some miso soup (only $1!) and the vegetable roll -- along with crispy gyoza, agedashi tofu, teriyaki chicken and the "illegal" asparagus to share with my dinner date. She got the spicy tuna hand roll, and the spicy salmon hand roll. Yup, I don't eat seafood. Haha. So if you're like me, and worried that there won't be enough options for you, think again! You'll be just fine.

i love this place!!!!!!!! =) they are awesome!!! GOOD FOOD and EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE! MIKUNI ROCKS MY BELLY! and the CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWESOME!!!!! though most the the sushi makers seems a bit sad lol i mean is that a regular thing? lol its okay, if i was making sushi i would probably have no facial expression either, because some customer dont like people to talk while their food is in the making. reference to - "say it dont spit it " so all 5 star! i love it!!!! like all of it food, environmental &customer service

I love coming to mikuni! My favorite is to to sit at the sushi bar. Perferrably in front of Miguel! Each and every of my experiences have been outstanding! He really listens to me and has patients with me when it comes to trying new food. He really goes the extra mile. MIGUEL IS AWESOME!! :)

Food was good, but the waitress failed to inform me of the correct price on some items, and the manager (Scott) was a complete A-hole about it. That kind of dis-service kills it for me. 0 stars.

We came here for a friend's going-away celebration last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, with a minor exception or two. As we were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, we had a couple drinks at the bar (key lime monitor) for me. For a place that gets so busy, it's great to see how many tables there are on the main floor as well as the second floor. We were seated in a semi-private room, which was nice because we could actually hear each other speak. Food-wise, I wanted to go light and simple on my choices. As such, I had the ebi fry, ocean trout nigiri, sockeye salmon nigiri and yellowtail kingfish nigiri. My boyfriend had the hamachi kama with steamed rice and essentially the 99 roll without avocado. Everything was very fresh, flavorful and well-cooked. Everyone else ordered either bento boxes or a variety of rolls. Some of our dishes were definitely delayed, which is pretty much my main complaint. Also, they didn't have amberjack, which I was really craving last night. All in all, it was a great first experience for me there and I look forward to returning.

This place has good fish, but I don't like the price. Its too expensive for average sushi. Friendly service. If you go with friends and order a boat its worth the money, but for one roll that wont fill you up its just too expensive.

Awesome to see a gluten free menu here. Be sure to explain your gluten allergy (like a shellfish allergy) or celiac disease before ordering. Ask for the sushi chef Jesse for added safety. As always when extra precautions for your health and safety are taken, be sure to tip accordingly.

There is nothing more awesome to an SFer than a night out in Sac-Town. Now, before you turn your noses up, haters, please read this excerpt, straight from the "Urban Dictionary," "It's NOT a cowtown...you have to go hella outta town to even see any cows. Second Saturday is crackin', huge block party basically. Everyone gets f*cked up...downtown is crackin, lots of bars and good food....hella things to do." There you have it. And if you want to get "f*cked up" in Sac-Town, I recommend starting at Mikuni.

Whenever I'm in Sacramento, I like to head over to Mikuni for some sushi. We ordered a sashimi platter (tasted fresh), a seaweed salad (tasted as expected but the portion was small), and a sushi roll (yummers). After tax and tip the total came out to $57. The servers were pleasant, the place is noisy, but the food is worth it.

I like all the Mikuni Restaurants. The one in Fair Oaks is the first one I ever visited. The miso broth there is divine, one of the best in Sacramento. The downtown Mikuni is lively and fun but tends to be crowded. The bar there is bright and convenient. I've had great lunches at the downtown Mikuni. Mikuni Elk Grove is friendly and welcoming. The sushi is gorgeous and tasty. Taro's by Mikuni is an experience. The menu is more trendy than the other restaurants and a bit more costly. The ambiance and décor are very cool. The food is tasty and interesting. All in all I love Japanese and Mikuni is a good place to meet friends and get good food.

I love Mikuni sushi!! The service has always been great and the food follows this standard. They have a WIDE variety of sushi rolls and foods. I do, however, prefer their Hazel location because it has more of that 'family owned' restaurant feel and I like that a bit more (which is why that location gets that 1 more star). None the less the food is great at this location as well, but just be prepared to wait for a table if you go for dinner -- and the waits can get pretty long. Also this location is pretty squeezed tight together -- meaning they cram a bunch of tables together to make more room for more tables to fit in. I see their logic with trying to accommodate more people, but what they fail to realize is that not only do you feel as though the people sitting in the table next to you is now part of your table ... but that ALSO now their own workers can't fit in between the tables. We probably had our table 'bumped' 3+ times through the night by the bussers carrying the bucket with dirty dishes. ugh. But because the food is SO good, and the service, other than what I noted above, is great as well -- 4 stars.

Damn damn damn!! How do I even rate this place? So many people have rated it to give it a 4-star rating yet it's comparable to the sushi good purchase at Costco. Grab some Mayo mix with sriracha and drizzle it over your Costco sushi and it will be just the the same. The only reason I gave it one star is because of my company they were fabulous. Overall sorry over rated over priced not worth it.

2nd Review here: Here is the deal, the fish is consistently fresh, that alone is the main reason I come back. I love nigiri, sashimi, chirashi these I have been eating it since I was a kid, so the freshness of the fish is really important to me. That being said, I honestly do like the maki (rolls) I have tried here. Of course the Black and White (Albacore tuna toro seared with olive oil and garlic, black tobiko caviar, ponzu, green onions) is always ordered and it is like butter on your tongue, excellent! Last night we tried the Fish Tank Roll, it had crunchy asparagus in it and it was quite good. Overall experience here is usually pretty good, It keeps me coming back and when family visits from out of town, I always bring them here!

No consistency in the size of the rolls or the amount of fish used, one day you get full with one roll order the second day you need to order 2 rolls just so you can feel like you had an appetizer , complained to the waiter "super nice guy" and all he said was ohh I'm sorry about that, pointed out how the order right next to mine "same roll" is over twice as big, he said it depends on the chef , wow. I want the other chef... And this happens a lot . Absolutely no consistency..

On the way from reno, we were hungry to eat quick meal before going home. I found this rest from yelp; over 1000 people review; wanted to try it Ok, parking, it is no free street parking in midtown, sacramento. Found one street meter parking, paid w credit card. Fine..we were hungry As soon as we went to rest, inside of decoration and space looked modern and big compared to usual sushi rest. I am a big fan of sushi roll; so exciting to try them in new place. But on the menu, all the name was different than i was used to order other sushi rest. I did not spend too much time to read all sushi roll; so ordered lunch special combo. Our staff was so nice and friendly But our meal came so late; we only have one hr parking..omg Waited 35 mins to get sushi combo roll Luckily, we had salad before roll; salad dressing was kind of weird..too sour to me. all my lunch special rolls, fried shrimp was included. Why.. Different name of sushi rolls, but all of them were same tasting. Maybe i did not choose right one? no idea We will not go back.

Tried Mikuni's for the first time on Wednesday. A bonus was we came during happy hour. Yay! The sushi chefs were very friendly. The servers, however, weren't very attentive even if we were at the sushi bar. Would've been nice if they checked on us more with drinks, ordering more food & the check. The happy hour menu is awesome. A large selection of dishes to try from $4-9 which is great if you wanna try a little of everything. They have a $40 deal that comes with like 3 different courses that bf & I agreed to come try on another visit. I Recommend: BBQ tuna Gyoza Train wreck roll

Overhyped. I was in the Sacramento area craving for sushi, and made the mistake of only seeing the four stars here and 1000+ reviews, instead of actually reading them. If you love Japanese food, don't come here. This is Asian fusion; the place for cocktails, taking pictures of your food and your date/girlfriends to post on Instagram, but not a place to feel satiation unless you have the $$$ to order more dishes. A lot of rolls have the same ingredients, just under different names, and I think a considerable amount had jalapenos? What is up with THAT. 5 star customer service, mostly fresh fish, atmosphere, alcohol. A shot of fresh sake came in a pretty little glass cup (bigger than shot glass), absolutely worth $5. And because I'm a light weight, half of it was enough to make my head spin. If I came back, it's for the alcohol, not the food!

It's been a few years since I've been to a Mikuni's restaurant. On 3/13/15, Diana T. and I dined here after work to celebrate her birthday. We sat at a table next to the sushi bar. The sushi masters were courteous and friendly. The wait staff were also fantastic, so 5 stars for service all around. To start of the evening before the birthday girl arrived, I ordered the Tokyo Tea. It was divine! I enjoyed every sip of my drink. If I weren't driving home, I probably would have had two more glasses of it. I also had my usual Agedashi Tofu, and it was not a disappointment either. I finished all this before the birthday girl arrived. Couldn't wait! After the birthday girl arrived, I ordered more food for myself. I had the BBQ Albacore Tuna Appetizer and the Zig Zag Shrimp Hand Roll. Diana ordered the Tuna Sliders 2, Albacore Pepperfin, BBQ Albacore Tuna Appetizer and 12 O'clock High. The 12 O'clock High is not on the menu. You have to be in the know to get this dish, and my squirrel friend knew to order it from the sushi itamae (chef). Everything we had to eat was delicious! Mikuni's is one of my friend's favorite Japanese restaurants, and this is one we both can agree with a 5-star rating. The only negative experience would be parking for the birthday girl because she had to drive around until she found street parking which was several blocks away, but that did not ruin our experience at Mikuni's.

I know Mikuni doesn't need MY help to keep reelin' in the fans BUT they get better and better each time I visit. I've been a faithful patron for 12 years and my most recent outing for a late dinner was better than ever. Maybe it was the head chef preparing our dishes, maybe it was the opportune alignment of the sun, Earth and moon but the food and service were a hard-earned 10. Also I will never again return without pre-feasting on tuna sliders...and making sure everyone in my party does too. Sharing is caring after all, especially when the objet d'art is a Mikuni's tuna slider.
