Finally got this one crossed off my list. The chicken fried steak with sausage gravy, two eggs, hash browns and two pieces of toast is all you need to eat in one day. Boyfriend got the silver dollar pancakes with some enormous sausage links. We sat outside and enjoyed the people watching in Lavender Heights. I was excited to see that they do have mimosas, but I was there strictly to feed my hangover. Large portions + low prices + fast service = happy boyfriend. Mimosas = happy me.

Walking up to this place, we thought this is gonna be great! Super cute vibe, hole in the wall breakfast spot, had ok reviews. Pretty run down but hey give it a shot. Ordered coffee and water to start - poured milk into the coffee only to find it was old/warm and curdled...sent it back got new coffee. Ok it happens right? Order our food - just doesn't look very appetizing. Pancakes were pretty good. The bacon wasn't cooked correctly and one of the pieces looked old, the eggs weren't cooked to the order, and as we are looking around we notice the place is filthy. The booths are grimey, the dividers are dusty, etc. if the place can't stay cleaned, how does that kitchen look. It has potential but probably won't go back. Fix this place up it could be great!

Good food good value. Service is fast and friendly. The food is good. The price is low. The coffee is better than I expected. Not as good as Pete's, but better than most places that aren't coffee shops.

I've been going here routinely for over 15 years. My favorite breakfast in the Sacramento area for sure! I like the new mural and remodel! Nice!

Lucky Cafe is a hole in the wall. Unfortunately, the food wasn't good. Yes the hash browns were perfect. but my two sunny side up eggs were greasy. I almost took a napkin to it to soak up the oil like I sometimes do to my pizza. One egg had partly cooked yolk and the other was a little slimy (I don't mind slimy but i know alot of people don't like it). The Ham and English muffin was fine. Just like the service. My dish wasn't worth the $8, more like $2.99. Sigh,I should have stayed home and cooked my own breakfast. BTW, my BF said his pancakes-sausage-over easy egg breakfast was good but the coffee wasn't.

I try so hard to like this place, I really do. It's so close to my house. I ordered the Denver with no ham sub mushrooms. The food came as ordered, with an additional ingredient..oil, lots and lots of oil. So much oil that it just made me sick. Worst part is they don't offer to fix the problem, or provide a discount. They take the food away and then charge full price. I think the business model is almost over charge every customer because they are only coming once! THE STAFF IS VERY VERY PLEASANT, and try to help, the cooks and manager just give them a hard time. I feel bad for them.

This cafe is adorable and authentic. The service was great and everyone was really friendly. I ordered the French toast with eggs and bacon on a Sunday morning. I couldn't even finish it. It was so delicious! Plus the prices were affordable. I will definitely be back.

Service was horrible. It took 25 minutes to get water and the waitress gave us one glass for two people. We never received silverware. Food took an hour to come out. I asked a waiter for a fork he replied "sure" and never brought me the fork. I have never eaten eggs with a spoon before and it was difficult. No refill was given on our one glass of water. No refill on the coffee. My English muffin never came out. Three different parties near us left in disgust due to lack of service. People were walking out after being ignored. Lucky cafe has gone downhill and even though I live a block away I will never go back.

Nice Little Breakfast Stop in my Midtown Hood SITREP What Lucky Cafe has going in it's favor is that it is very close to where I live now in the Midtown Hood. If I am too lazy to fix myself a breakfast (usually this becomes an issue only on the weekends when I HAVE time to eat breakfast), Lucky is only one short power walk away down 21st Street. MENU SETUP Lucky is your just your average diner that serves up my breakfast eggs & hashbrowns & toast just the way I like them: grilled and toasted without too much muss. SERVICE It can be terribly slow at times, and there have been attitudes with the servers that I don't understand why I must be the recipient of such negative behaviors. Do I just have the face that says, "Please abuse me. Go ahead and vent your frustrations out on me." *END RANT* But I do pretty good at ignoring such surliness, and then I have the power, in any event, to leave my dispositive comment about their service: NO TIP. THE LOWDOWN Go for the food. Leave quickly when the bad service kicks in.

Belgian waffle with bacon outside and two over easy eggs! I love a simple breakfast, and Lucky Cafe does it right! Their belgian waffles are cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and soft in the center. One waffle fills an entire plate. You have the option to have your bacon cooked inside your waffle, but I usually don't do that since I like dipping my bacon in the egg yolk from my over easy eggs. Anyway, the service is attentive, the food is tasty, and the prices are pretty darn good for their serving sizes. Just go!

Service was horrible!! Asked for coffee, never got it. Our server never checked on us or to refill our water cups and had to hunt the server down just so we could get our bill and waited another 15 mins and it wasn't even busy! What was the hold up?? She was eating in the back kitchen instead of doing her job. Wow. That's one way to lose customers. Food wise it was nothing special. This place makes Denny's or IHOP look like a better option. Never coming back!!

I hate to give a bad rating but the place needs to be updated all around with the place..customer service...and food.....the food was ok....service was ok....took forever for someone to take our order....coffee was ok...i was hoping for a better experience :(

I have been eating here less and less over the last few months... There is just to much breakfast/brunch competition to make Lucky a regular dining experience. They do lots of items, but nothing shines. .. except their hot pepper sauce- pour that over everything and your plate goes from B- to B+ real quick.

Went here for brunch... Sat at a booth and waited. The guy came and bussed the dishes that were at the table then brought us waters. Then we waited.... And waited some more. 18 minutes into our wait we called our friend to see if he wanted us to bring him anything, he declined. And we waited some more. 27 minutes into the wait the guy who brought our waters asked if we were helped and we said no. Maybe 10 more minutes passed and the waitress came to take our order. She apologized and said it was one of those days. This is totally understandable as I know there are times in this business where it is just beyond crazy but as the waitresses passed by us for over a half of an hour they coulda said, " sorry for the wait, be right with you" or something like that. I don't know. The food didn't take that long to get to us and I'm not picky but my hash browns were hard and so oily like they were just sitting there... No potato taste... Just oil taste. Tina's hash browns were light and fluffy and perfect. My 2 scrambled eggs looked like just over one egg... Small portion. My bacon was amazing cause....come on, IT'S BACON!!!! :) anyway. I totally get that things can get crazy at a restaurant but things coulda been handled differently. I think we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time cause right when we ordered another couple came in and ordered immediately... No wait. Please understand that this review is based only on my experience at this particular time. I'd still go back cause I like the diner/greasy spoon atmosphere. I hope my next experience allows a better review but only time will tell. One out of five stars. Almost forgot... When she brought the food she told us the toast was in the toaster... It was delivered when we were halfway done eating. :( One more thing there was a $4.00 charge on our bill for 2 coffees.... I asked if my one OJ cost for dollars and she said, "no, that was for your coffees"... I raised my o.j. glass and she just looked around the table... She said that she thought we had a couple of coffees and then corrected the bill. :(

Been here a couple times. It's hit or miss. Today the service was awful. Waitress served us our food without utensils and then disappeared. Which is fine, it happens. But what's not fine is serving me ice cold eggs and sausage. Won't be coming back.

This is the best breakfast place I come here every Sunday. It's like the best little diner in town

I still enjoy coming to Lucky Cafe, but lately their food had been wildly inconsistent. I don't know if they are experimenting with new recipes, but most of the results have been sub par. The latest: Biscuits and gravy that were 70% black pepper, and hash browns that weren't hashed.

This was one of our favorite brunch places - more for its punk rock vibe than because its was high quality - but until recently the food was still pretty hearty and tasted fine. However, this winter Lucky went downhill quickly. Our second to last visit resulted in me sending back sausage gravy that I swear was made with non-dairy coffee creamer rather than milk. The waitress took just the gravy off the bill even though I was left only with biscuits - she didn't comp us anything or ask if I would like a replacement meal. On our last visit we again ordered Biscuits and Gravy with two poached eggs. This time the dish arrived at the table with only two biscuits and two eggs. The waitress explained they were out of gravy but that she took it off the bill. The bill actually ended up being more expensive because she charged us a'la carte for 2 eggs and a serving of biscuits - even though that wasn't even a meal. In both cases we paid and tipped appropriately, but we have taken Lucky off our list of breakfast places.I know that it is sometimes difficult when places are busy for the front of the house and the back of the house to communicate, but in both cases we the customers were left with half a meal and bills that should have been comped. In cases like that you can only shrug and walk away. Having a fit or screaming at the waitress gains nothing. That type of service is indicative of bad management not bad waitstaff. If Lucky would make even basic quality food a priority again we would go back. Until then "Evan's" is our go to brunch - less punk rock, but way tastier.

So gross! Normally you can get a pretty traditional well cooked breakfast, but today it was bad. The bacon had clearly been precooked and reheated, the hollandaise had a very unusual texture, and the hashbrowns were soaked in oil, cold and crunchy. We got there at 8:15, just after opening. There's no way that food had been prepared this morning. Too bad, it use to be a good spot but knowing our hard earned money was spent on a terrible meal makes me not ever want to go there again.

Great place for brunch. We went there for a brunch after grabbing some vegetables from the nearby farmers market. From the outside it looks like a rundown building, but inside was another story. This place was unexpectedly packed with what seemed to be their regular clientele, which made up for a cool ambience. We had omelettes and coffee. Everything was nice and service was good as well.

My man wanted some "effing french toast" (40 year old virgin) so we went on a yelp journey to find a place to satisfy his needs. Lucky Cafe was a choice due to their rating. It was a Sunday day at Noon, there was no wait but there weren't any booth seats either so we got a place at the counter. The server greeted us right away and I ordered a coffee, too bad the cup had left over stains from before it was washed. =( The second cup they gave me was still dirty but less dirty. The wait was a bit long. The pancakes was huge, the sausages were huge, the eggs were okay. I feel that the food didn't taste fresh, it tasted as if it has been frozen and microwaved. Try another place for your breakfast needs.

Am visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this quaint little spot. Breakfast is my meal, so I have high expectations, but this diamond in the rough gave me exactly what I needed. Had the belgian waffle with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar with a side of delicious bacon, and an always full cup of coffee. I normally shy away from restaurant waffles, due to tendency for them to taste like bisquick. But this was was light and fluffy, and also just pretty to look at! My waitress Jennifer, was fantastic. So sweet and attentive. Apart from how good everything was, the price was even better. The bill was only $8! I might stop in again today with the folks I'm visiting :)

Simple, straightforward breakfast diner. Folks are consistently nice and prompt, price is reasonable, place is clean, food is straightforward and for the greasy-leaning. Nothing to complain about. I enjoy going here a few times a month.

Place was great! Low key classic look with solid food! I had the breakfast sandwich with bacon and I LOVED it! I sampled their link sausage and silver dollar pancakes which which were great too! Hash brows were perfection and their in house salsa is amazing!

  • Lacey C.

The embodiment of a quintessential 'GREASY SPOON'. The waitresses are nice but a little rough around the edges. The cooks look like they would be at home with a cigarette hanging from a downturned corner of their mouth. It's really quite perfect. At the heart of Lucky Cafe is really good food. You have to be in the mood for it, but man...it's solid diner food.

If only Yelp allowed negative stars. This place is dingy, the booths are falling apart, and the food is mediocre. All this on top of an ornery woman behind the counter. The mice that I saw running around the place seemed to like it though. No joke. This place is a winner.

Love the waffles with bacon in them!! The waffle with bacon in it is off the hook! Love the crunchy hash browns! Best pancakes in Sacramento ! Love having breakfast with my son! The service is good!

I've been coming here on on and off for over 25 years. I think it has slipped. Yes. It is a greasy spoon...I'm ready for that. But things just don't seem right anymore. There's no reason for our waitress to get flustered and forget us just because they're busy. It's Sunday morning. It's supposed to be busy. Out of corned beef hash at 10:00 AM? What's that about? My chicken fried steak (the dish I always use to compare greasy spoons) was tough beyond tough. Full of gristle that could not be chewed. Period. I had to give up more than once and discreetly deposit pieces of inedible meat into my napkin. I have never, NEVER, had to do that in any restaurant before. I think they need to take it up a notch and not rest upon their long-time reputation lest they find their clientele drifting away. I'll drive a little farther and eat at Evan's.

With all that is new in Midtown, it has been a long while since I made it into the Lucky Cafe. It is nice to have that neighborhood place that remains the same throughout the years. The Lucky Cafe is definitely one of those places. A Midtown institution, the Lucky Cafe continues to churn out delicious breakfast. Today I had the special ... Eggs Benedict. Everything was as I would expect. The only downside was the fruit that came with my meal ... I believe that was more a product of the season however and let's face it ... When I am eating eggs & Canadian bacon smothered in a sauce that starts with a large helping of real butter, I am not paying much mind to the fruit. My advice, get down to the Lucky Cafe, sit at the counter (there are tables too if you prefer), enjoy the friendly service and get to know your neighbors. You won't be disappointed.

What happened? Oh, you have a new cook, he sucks!! I have been eating here for 20+ years. It hit a wall and wasn't so good in the 90's. The management turned it around and it has been a gtrat place for breakfast for the past 10 years. Always consistently cooked, large portioned hearty meals. That was until January 2012 when it was lousy. Arrived with a party of 6, ordered my "usual" with extra crispy hash browns, food arrived a bit slower than normal but not an issue. The hash browns were Hash-Yellows... Disgusting splatters of oily yellow under cooked potato. I pointed it out to the waitress and she said "I wrote it down, they just did it wrong". They did it wrong on mine and 2 other orders that ordered extra crispy. A little bit crispy would have been tolerable, these were Al Dente. Gross. Waitress said she would bring new potatoes out. and that these were not even cooked, let alone well done or crispy. Upon her return she told us, "the cook said these are as well done as they are going to get", they were cooked to what most people would call, done. Brown potatoes on the edges and some of the top. The rest of the food was better but not really good, my #10 was super oily, like the bacon was chopped up and cooked in Crisco, pretty gross. Omelettes were poorly prepared, portions were small and the overall experience was sub-par. The poor waitress, having worked there for a few years and being a pro, forced to sling slop that she knows isn't up to the standards previously set. Remember, this place charges a premium for breakfast, it is expensive and was worth it for a while. I will boycott for a few months and hopefully the lousy cook will be gone, I did peek in to see what he looks like, if he's there, I'm gone and my regular Sunday breakfast crew will be spending our money elsewhere.

Now this place is a throwback... the counter reminds me of an old lunch counter you find in the South some where... except without all the hipsters. The food is legit, big ol' platters of gut busting breakfast to keep you working hard all day or curled up on the couch in slumber land... guess it depends on how you live your life? The service is top notch, especially when you're at the counter and you really can't beat the prices, hard to believe this place is in downtown Sacramento at these prices!

Chorizo flavorful but eggs not hot; hash browns too greasy; service attentive. Not crowded so kitchen not overwhelmed. Like the spruce up to atmosphere and especially like the mural.

This place is so old timey! So nostalgic but clean, complete with the classic breakfast bar. I love it! Went here with Bae on Sunday morning for a little cheap-o brunch. Seriously satisfied us. The pancakes here are better than any other pancakes!!! So fluffy, hint of sweetness inside, drowning in butter. It's just what you want from a pancake breakfast. And oh-so-homemade. I had the spinach and cheese omelet. So tasty, and absolutely STUFFED with spinach which I like. Came with some crisp and savory hash browns. Great portions. For two adult meals, the total came out to $18.00. And we'll definitely be back. :) We were shaken with hunger/hungover-ness. So we were super happy to see our food coming out piping hot and fast! SIDE NOTE: The only downside I can think of is the seemingly inattentive servers, who are teenagers. The are very nice! just a little slow and unorganized. They took a while to come ask if we were ready to order, and were confused as to who was serving our table. But it's all good since our food was quick to be served. Thinking of those delicious pancakes now... MMMM :) Don't hesitate to visit this hole-in-the-wall breakfast gem!

Greasy spoon for sure. Perfect for hangovers!! You get what you expect at a joint like this. The service has always been fine. They always seem to be out of the corned beef hash when I go.

i walked in and i just self seat myself since no host was available. i tend to lean for the booth but it had a sign of minimum of 2 people so i went ahead and sat on the bar table. they already had the table all set up with a menu as well. i then was greeted and asked if i need a cup of coffee. i then went ahead and looked at the menu. i have heard many things about the silver dollar pancake. so i then consider it. i then went ahead and order the number 4 with french toast and one sunny side egg but it came out over easy, and 3 sausages, with a slab of greasy potatoes. about 5 minute wait, my meal had came out. the french toast took an additional 3 minutes to come out. the egg was made over easy when i requested sunny side. i didn't mind since it had yolk inside. i then broke the yolk on top of the slab of greasy potatoes. the potatoes were on the bland side. i had to spice it up with their hot sauce and ketchup and pepper. it was definite roasted golden brown with a crisp texture to it. the sausages were just normal nothing special. the french toast was on the sweeter side. the french toast was a bit moist. it had a sugary powdery texture to it with the cinnamon and sugar powder. it wasn't my favorite and i have had better. i don't think i will order the french toast again and i would have rate it 2.5 outta 5. overall this number 4 combo was only 7.56. i found it to be a great deal for a quick breakfast. i have walked by this place for many times but never had the urge to go in. also they close early after lunch time i believe, the lunch menu has sandwiches and soup and salad from a quick browse. the decor inside had painted walls with sacramento sights on it. its a colorful artwork on the walls and had the feel for a old vibe diner in sacramento. There are plenty of seats for customers and is great for groups too. also kids friendly too with a kids menu. the service is more on the casual style. they do bring you stuff but not very attentive, with refilling waters. overall it was good and friendly environment for some quick cheap hole in the wall breakfast with some family. and again thanks for reading and happy yelping.

Did I feel "Lucky" the last time I came here? I can't say I did. I had been with a friend driving around midtown looking for a good breakfast spot. Her and I finally decided on this little hole in the wall because like the other places we tried, it was not very busy or expensive. I ordered the veggie omelet with avocado and spinach on the side. Let's just say that I could have made a better omelet and I suck at making omelets! The omelet was bland and the veggies weren't sauteed all the way. The eggs also felt looked a bit watery. And let's not even talk about the hash brown that was flopped on my plate. The entire top was burnt...like get the fire extinguisher burnt! I could not eat that burnt hash brown even if I was on Fear Factor with Joe Rogen yelling in my ear "This is for $25,000...let's go...eat it!" The good thing is I wasn't going to eat it to begin with and only wanted the omelet; however, I was very disappointed with Lucky Cafe. I guess they were Lucky I came in and bought something. The service was fast because there were only like four other people in there. Will I give the Lucky Cafe another try? I think they're luck just ran out and I'm not interested in burnt hash browns with watery omelets. I'll take my chances elsewhere.

Lucky Cafe is within walking distance from my home and I wanted a quick, delicious breakfast one morning so I walked over there. I had the Santa Fe (I think that's what it's called) omelette and added bacon. It was delicious although the salsa left something to be desired. I would ask ask for no sour cream next time. The hash browns were what to be expected and the rye toast was fine as well. The service was a bit scattered and she was slow and then brought out the wrong order. I'll definitely be back to explore the menu at a later date, I'm thinking French toast.

I ordered number 6 on the menu. Harsh brown can be cooked in less oil. Oil they use is fresh. Eggs were done perfected bc i requested over easy. Sausages us yummy. Overall for the price: food is 4 out of 5. Service was 5 out of 5. Would come here again. My waitress was awesome.

Classic American breakfast fare, fast & cheap. Things they get right; coffee, eggs, hash browns, sausage, biscuits & gravy. Rumor has it the pancakes and waffles are great too, if you're into that kind of thing. I'm partial to the #4 with sausage, a biscuit for toast and a side of gravy. $12 w/coffee. Service is fine, Kate is a peach, but I've only ever seen one server, one buser and one cook on shift here at a time, so relax, you'll get your turn. Occasionally the buser will come try and help you out with coffee if the server is busy, he's not there to take your order or answer questions, so please, accept his kindness and back off. They get 5 stars, are they really a 5 star restaurant? Well no, this isn't Bacon & Butter, silly, but they deserve a boost in their rating, because they do what they do well, with consistency.

I don't understand these negative reviews and tips. Everytime I come to Lucky's, my family, friends and I always have a pleasant experience. The restaurant is old because it's in a super old building, but the establishment is clean. The last time we came in was a few days after Thanksgiving with our 2 year old son. We were immediately greeted and seated seconds after we walked in. Our waitress came and apologized for the wait...but she was fine, we didn't wait long at all. My son is a handful. He was good during the meal, but after he was done, he got bored and started throwing our toast around. The staff didn't even get upset because they understood that he was just a little kid. They even thanked us for visiting. The food is awesome. I think they changed the chef because their chicken fried chicken wasn't the same as before. It use to be a flour crust, now they use panko bread crumbs, but it's still a tasty dish. Overall, this place is solid. Haters just got to hate, I guess.

The food here was decent but the service was bad. Immediately after we received our food we were given the check our waiter shift was over, she told us no rush then came back twice to see if we left our payment. We asked for a box to take our leftovers (portions were large) then waited 15 minutes while our waitress sit at the counter on her cell phone and she got her food to go and walked out. We will not be going back or recommending this place.

Wow this place has gone down hill :( used to be our favorite little breakfast place but the service is just terrible now!!! They don't even acknowledge you at all when you come in. Sat at our table for almost 5 minutes before they even asked if we wanted water. Then it took forever to order. I watched our food come up in the kitchen window and then the waitress took it to another table and set it down. When the other table complained that it was the wrong food she then brought it over to us...just rude and inept. So sad because we have always loved and promoted this little place for many years. This is the second time we have had just terrible service there lately and we will not be coming back. Bummer!!!

In a city full of fancy frou frou brunch places, Lucky Cafe stands out for it's simple and cheap diner food. Tender and flavorful corned beef w/ a side of hash browns & two eggs + deliciously fluffy pancakes all for $13.

Had the Denver omelet and the #6. The waitress was happy to oblige my no carb substitution. The bacon and sausage were really delicious. Happy we chose here instead of Dennys.! The waitress was attentive and friendly. Nice old school, greasy spoon diner. You can taste the seasoned grill, it was great!

Minus 3 stars for the lack of service. To clarify, no one was rude to us by any means. Although, they didn't have the opportunity to be rude since we hardly saw them! We walked in to the diner and hardly anyone was in there. We sat down and it took about 15 minutes for anyone to even greet us. We got our drinks and waited probably another 15 minutes for someone to look our way and see that we were waiting. During that time the restaurant filled up completely (it's not too hard to do, the place is pretty small) Finally we got our order taken, but not before every other person who got there after us had theirs taken. Food came out fairly quick, and was pretty tasty! I got the Mexican chorizo and eggs, and my fiancé got the Belgium waffle, sunny side up eggs, and sausage. Well.. He ordered bacon but got sausage for some reason- but he said it was really good so he didn't mind. We literally never saw our server again after we ordered, not even to deliver our food. We waited for drink refills and never got them, continued waiting and waiting thinking she would be bringing our bill at some point at least , and never did she ever come back over. I dropped a $20 on the table and walked out because I was sick of waiting.

Yelp saves the day again! I wanted a cheap breakfast without having to resort to chain restaurants (Denny's, IHOP, etc) and knew there must be SOME cozy hole in the wall where I could get it (that *wasn't* named Pancake Circus). My Yelp app directed me to Lucky Cafe and I'm glad it did! $20 bought two generous breakfasts, a coffee and a Coke. My eggs, sausage links, hash browns, cottage cheese and English muffin all tasted great and I happily wolfed them down. We were seated immediately, got our drinks right away and only had to wait a little over 5 minutes for our food. Staff was super friendly and our waitress was cracking jokes with us. I'd get my greasy breakfast on here again for sure!

I've been going to Lucky Cafe once a week and usually the food is half way decent for the low price of the early bird specials. However the past 3 times I've gone the food and service was progressively worse. First let me say that 2 different servers do not know the menu and prices. With both of these people I had to explain what I ordered and why the overcharged me and what comes with their early bird specials. This is frustrating as servers should be trained correctly and know their menus / specials. Second, the food quality, prep, and presentation when plated is now horrible. The cook didn't even make the order correctly and the eggs were not cooked all the way (scrambled) and the ham was bunrt. Very disappointed. I work right across the street from the cafe and will no longer be going there unless an immediate improvement is made. Goodbye to my Wednesday breakfasts at Lucky Cafe. Guess I will drive to Mel's Diner. :-(

This place was pretty OK. One good point is that it has no TV. I can't stand that every restaurant today has at least two TVs in it. I had the Spanish omelete. It was quite good and the salsa was nice and spicy. The coffee was OK and the cream so-so. The hash browns were good but the gravy, like most diners, was a wee bit lacking - better than most, worse than some. The service was very polite and prompt. I will probably end up eating there again.

I love Lucky Cafe for exactly what it is...a genuine, authentic, greasy spoon diner. They look of the place is eclectic and old, but mostly just comfortable. They recently painted the outside but the old neon sign still has that "rustic" look to it. If you are looking for fancy or upscale, this isn't the place for you. The service here is typically excellent, but on weekend mornings when it is slammed, the staff can sometimes get a bit overwhelmed. I've been coming here for years and I can only think of a couple of times when I felt like I had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to be served. If you come in during off hours, (not Saturday or Sunday mornings) the service will be great. Jen, Courtney, and Sarah have been there for a long time and will treat you right. The food is all pretty good, but the pancakes are what they do best. I usually don't order from the lunch menu because the breakfast stuff is all so good. I was sad when they took the chicken apple sausage off the menu, but they have a lot of other things to choose from that are good. Tons of different omelettes, you can get a waffle with bacon IN it (!!!), and the eggs benedict is usually pretty good. Consistency is a bit of an issue. Most of the time the food is great, but depending on who is cooking, things can come out different and sometimes it is disappointing. For a while they had a cook who really couldn't do scrambled eggs well, but I think he's gone. Overall...I could go on and on...but basically Lucky Cafe is a solid breakfast place with a super nice staff and I'm happy to be a regular there.

This place is a dump. I mean that in a positive way. Sat at the bar and the service is very friendly. Ordered the chorizo and eggs with hash browns. I do not like my hash browns charred. These were perfectly browned. My brother raved about the chicken fried steak. Can't wait to go back.

Accidentally found Lucky Cafe, and I'm so glad I did! Good food and great service. I had tomatoes and eggs, and a mimosa; all very good. I wasn't intending to eat here, but plans changed and yelp guided me to Lucky Cafe! (Thanks, yelp) It's a 3 for now because my friend's chorizo and eggs were cold, and although we did have great service, they seemed to have forgotten about us for a while after they sat us down. I still look forward to going back and trying other dishes.

This morning, I ate there for the 3rd time in recent months. It's a bit of a hole in the wall divey type place. I go there for breakfast on the weekend and am never disappointed. Today, I had the french toast with eggs and sausages. 4 pieces of French toast came but they were not 2 slices cut into 2; instead it was 4 big pieces. I wanted the eggs to be scrambled and wet and it was done exactly the way I wanted them. My sausages melted in my month. The portion was huge so I ate half and took the other half home. I ended up making a sandwich with the extra French toasts and with the sausages, I threw them in a soup I was making. My huge plate of food was about $9. The place offers good value. This is a place I would return to again and would recommend to others.

When my co-worked called Lucky Cafe the home of "gut busting breakfast" was she ever right. For her it was not a complement but for me it is. I have been to Luckys a number of times now, and I can say I am ever disappointed. I love that fact that they have so many non pork options, but now I have a new favorite thing. I get the chicken fried chicken without the pork gravy and I have them put hollandaise sauce on it and OMG is it great. Don't blame me when you have a heart attack :). The decor leaving something to be desired, don't go there to impress anyone but I think it adds to the experience, plus I have never had to wait for a table even during peak time.

As much as I hate to do this I have no choice. I love the breakfast at Lucky Cafe. However, while there today around 10:45 a huge rat trotted across the floor of the dining room. The craziest part is the customers didn't seem to think it was that big of a deal. Maybe because the food is really good. But wow. It was crazy. I would have otherwise totally recommended this place. The food and service are both generally great. But unfortunately, the rat kind of spoiled the whole experience. Hopefully they get it worked out. Yikes.

If you are looking for a greasy spoon on the grid. This is it. Big portions. Decent prices. Interesting waitstaff. Nothing to blow you away. No drinking of mimosas on the patio. Bummer when you bring the dog...

Time to try the competition for Bacon and Butter just a few doors down...and was not disappointed. Great service, great cafe/ diner food and loved the overall experience. Cant wait to go back and try something new. If I simply want bacon and nothing else, will go to Bacon and Butter but if I want a hearty, comfort food experience...Lucky Cafe is it.

    1) food is GREAT 2) service is GOOD - everyone here hustles 3) the wait for food was 40 mins... No so good 4) when the waitress was busy she stopped being friendly and she was half listening to our requests and got some stuff wrong. 5) overall we'll return and we were happy

This dive cafe was a find. Food was great. Tried the eggs benedict= was ok. Prime rib steak, eggs, potatoes plate=delish! Silver dollar pancakes, sausage=tasty. Low prices, good service, yummy food. OH! $5 mimosas are a yummy added pulse!

Great service. We sat at the bar and our server was super attentive, refilling drinks, chatting us up, and getting whatever we needed. Food was good. Hashbrowns were seasoned well and a bit greasy (my expectation at a greasy spoon). The chicken fried steak was good, but a bit overbreaded. I don't eat the gravy, but hubby said it was yummy. He ordered the chicken sausage and proclaimed it tasty. We also loved their homemade pepper sauce provided with the meal. Good on hashbrowns. I can't give it 5 stars because the place didn't seem clean. I have no problem with a GREASY spoon (in fact, I love them), but a dirty spoon is another matter.

Cornerstone used to be my go-to for a good ol' greasy breakfast, but since it moved into Head Hunters, it just hasn't been the same. As a result, I've been desperately searching for another eat-at-the-bar style diner in Midtown. I was hoping Lucky could fill the void left in my heart. This is definitely the type of place that isn't setting out to impress you, and you can respond in kind. Show up unshowered and in sweats, and you'll fit right in. We found a spot to sit in the back room, which was filled with plastic tables and chairs. Water and coffee were brought promptly and our order was taken. Now I have to admit that I was very excited when I came across their potato platter, which was my favorite dish at Cornerstone. But I'm sad to say that this one just did not measure up. You had to order cheese extra ($0.75), which was only lightly sprinkled on top, and beyond the top layer the potatoes weren't cooked very well. By the time I got to the bottom, I'm pretty sure they weren't cooked at all. Bummer. My girlfriend got the chorizo and really liked it, and her side of hash browns were very good, but my platter left me disappointed. I will give them a bonus point for offering the option of hash browns or country potatoes, as I am a huge hash brown proponent, and they are often hard to come by these days. However the country potatoes did cost an extra $1.50. Overall it was a fine experience, but I think my search for a Midtown diner is gonna have to continue. Also the tab came out to nearly $30, which is a little silly for a place like this. We at at the Black Bear Diner the day before and breakfast was several dollars cheaper (and better tasting).

Great service, good coffee, decent food. I think my favorite thing was the hot sauce. I had asked for tabasco, not knowing they had a specialty hot sauce. My server quickly directed me the right direction to the hot sauce, which is pretty close to salsa. I got the #10 - hash browns, scrambled eggs w/ onions, peppers, bacon & sausage...topped with cheese. The bf got the country breakfast. Pretty much what I had, but instead of hash browns it was country potatoes and covered in gravy. The gravy was good, but a little much. There was a lot of food - enough for us to eat for breakfast and then the left overs were dinner. No need for lunch in between the two. We sat at the counter so our service was quick and coffee always full. It took awhile for the final check to come, but that's the only knock I have on the service. Good food and we were seated right away, but I there wasn't anything that pulled at me to come back. Other than the fact that my friend said we were supossed to order the belgium waffles w/ bacon...

This is the place to come to for straighforward, quality breakfast fare. There are a good variety of options on the menu. I went for a swiss and avocado omelette and added spinach - my attempt at making this a healthy meal. It was fluffy and there was cheese both inside and as a topping. Good portion size; I was full but couldn't stop eating and I was hoping that there weren't any good fillings left at the end of the omelette. I didn't get that relief, it was tasty to the last bite. The hash browns were crispy and the toast served with a healthy dollop of butter. Good stuff.

Tried this place for the first time last weekend. I'm torn between 2 starts and 3, and giving it three because I'm going to give it one more try... Service was good. Food was so-so and expensive! 2 breakfasts with coffee ended up at $30, which is more than I normally pay for a DINNER out. They do give you a lot of food, but the quality is nothing spectacular. I've had better breakfasts of the same size for much less, and personally, I feel like $12 is a lot for an omlet, when many other places are in the $7-10 range. But, maybe that's just me being a miser. After breakfast, the boyfriend and i both felt a little queasy, like we just ate a brick of grease... I'll give it a second try, but I don't have high hopes.

1st impression, not so good. Huge sign says open until 2, we arrived at 1:35 and are told kitchen is closed. If they wanted to close the kitchen at 1:30, why wouldn't they just change the sign to show this, or actually keep the kitchen open until they close, and coincide with their own sign? Anyway, decided to give them another chance and for an Alice's Diner kind of place, it was actually quite good and reasonably priced! Imagine that! Very casual, even a little divey. Very nice and personable waitress, excellent hash browns, good eggs Benedict, great bacon infused waffle, and very good coffee! All in all, pretty darn good, just don't wait until they're 1/2 hour to closing or you might not get to eat there!

I have been coming here for about 10 years now and the food has definitely gone downhill. I go here expecting a greasy spoon diner, but Lucky used to be the best one. Went in 2 weeks ago and the silver dollar pancakes have gotten smaller, the bacon was thinner, the waffle with bacon in it was cold. Also it was 10am on a Saturday and half empty main room with no one even in the other room. Bummer too cause this was my favorite greasy spoon diner. I'll give it one more try and let you know. Maybe they were having a bad day.

  • Kimberly G.

Definitely not knock-your-socks-off amazing. My pancakes were super small and tasted like they were made with Bisquick, I asked for my bacon extra crispy and it was practically oinking on my plate, and my scrambled eggs were only half cooked. We were sat in the extra seating area so naturally, we didn't get the attention from the service staff I would have liked. Probably won't be back as I think there are definitely better cafes out there.

I keep forgetting how cheap this place is for breakfast in midtown, when you order strategically. Sure, there are a bunch of $10-13 breakfasts, but you probably shouldn't be eating that much food anyway. Ok, I will stop judging you, and make that an "I Statement". I probably shouldn't be eating that much food for breakfast. At Lucky Cafe, you can get a delicious waffle with two strips of bacon or two sausage links for $6.25. They heat up the syrup, too. I am a sucker for warm syrup. For $6.50, you can get two eggs, a ton of hash browns, and either toast or a pancake. They let you substitute a pancake (with warm syrup!) for toast. That's awesome. It means you never have to choose between pancakes and hash browns. (Why is is that pancake meals never come with potatoes, anywhere? Only the egg meals do. What if i want a straight starch breakfast?) The hash browns aren't the best ever, but they are good. The service is friendly, they serve pepper plant sauce, and there is Odwalla juice. It's a good diner-y breakfast option.

    (4)
  • Jessica T.

My favorite breakfast spot! Go for the country potatoes in lieu of hash browns and pour on the Pepper Plant sauce. You will thank me and send me flowers. I love the tomatoes and eggs but the kitchen can get a little nutso with the garlic so I always ask the server to tell them to take it easy. There's something like 15 different types of sausage on the menu and since I don't eat the stuff I'm always trying to get my dining partners to try them out. I need more adventurous friends. Also, I hate, I mean HATE pancakes but the pancakes here are freaking good. I'm also a fan of their OJ (Odwalla) and hot chocolate but as far as the coffee goes... well, Peet's is just around the corner and you'd be doing yourself a favor if you swung by on the way. I would absolutely give them 5 stars if it wasn't for the interior. It needs a serious overhaul.

    I. Love. This. Place. My neighbor told me about Lucky Cafe a couple years ago when I was heading out one morning in search of a greasy spoon. I was starving, and fortunately Lucky Cafe was just down the street. It turned out to be exactly what I wanted and since then I've been going there every time I get a hankering for some pancakes. Oh, the pancakes. My boyfriend had a serious case of Ratatouille-esque nostalgia when he took his first bite. I don't know what they put in them, but they are so good that you don't even need the syrup (but it certainly doesn't hurt to pour some on!). The breakfast sausage links are fat and juicy and I always opt for them over bacon (and I LOVE bacon). I've always experienced decent service at Lucky Cafe. My coffee cup is never empty and the food is always hot. I like that the eggs come on a separate plate when I'm having a pancake breakfast because it saves me the trouble of having to build a sausage dam to prevent the eggs from being overrun with syrup. This may not be the prettiest place, but it's always warm and friendly inside. You rarely, if ever, have to wait for a table. Oh, and it's the perfect place to go to feed a hangover - scores of people make a pit stop here along their Saturday or Sunday walk of shame.

Your classic greasy spoon. Seems the prices have gone up lately, and the quality has gone down. Maybe it's my maturing palate and the fact that I don't really need greasy food to soak up alcohol much anymore. They've got interesting combinations. I still go for the memories. Advise, come early in the morning during the weekends, it gets crowded.

The restaurant was typical diner-looking. The staff was sufficiently pleasant. The Denver omelette was delicious, with generous portions of ham, peppers and onions. The hash browns were some of the best I've had. It looked like I got two portions of them, yet I managed to eat almost all of them. Coffee was average, wheat toast below average (very dry and a bit hard). The only real downer, though, was the two guys at the end of the counter having a "conversation" consisting mostly of the f-word, followed closely by a-hole and other expletives as they spoke about their fellow musicians. But, they did say often what nice guys THEY were (to each other). I believe their fondness for the Mimosas was a factor in their choice of words.... Be sure to come when they aren't there and enjoy a great breakfast!

Last time we ate here my food was fine, my Wife had an issue. This time food cold, one cup of coffee; no refill, and a lengthy wait. Not impressed at all this time. Legs shaky, stomach queezy. Not feeling very lucky. Kind of wanna return it if you know what I mean.

Oh, how many a hangover has been busted here. There's nothing quite like a good breakfast at the Lucky Cafe after a night out. Ample seating along with quick and speedy service make this a solid choice on just about any given morning. I particularly like the booths that seat up to four people since they offer a bit more privacy than some of the other seating options. As for the food, expect a pretty standard offering of diner fare, but the quality is definitely a step up from the big chains. In fact, I have yet to find a better waffle at any other restaurant in town (I recommend getting it with the bacon inside the waffle). The prices are also an attractive feature of this restaurant, as you can easily get a great meal for under $10 and leave satisfied. There is a new breakfast place that just opened next door to it called Bacon & Butter, but I don't think it will take away from the customer base at Lucky Cafe. If I were rating on the waffle alone, it would be five-star, but the three-star rating I'm going to give it is a solid go-to, always dependable morning diner kind of three-star rating. I think the great food, quick service, and low prices will keep Lucky Cafe going strong!

First time here. The service was poor - it took at least 10 minutes (possibly more) to be acknowledged, our food was served before we received silverware (which we had to ask for - server didn't notice), and we had to request refills of coffee as the server was just overall inattentive. The food was decent, although I'm certain we could get comparable food anywhere else. I ordered the Spanish omelet which was tasty, although not as spicy/ flavorful as I would hope and the cook used more egg than I would have. My dad felt the hashbrowns were dry, and my fiancé thought his food was tasty but overshadowed by the bad service. My fiancé noted that the BEST part of the whole experience was that there was a Koi painting in the men's room, which was pretty fantastic (he took a pic for me). Which makes this a great place to stop if you need a potty. And now you know.

This place is alright. Its got the old time diner feel and you can sit at the counter or a table. My friend and I chose the counter and ordered breakfast from a nice waitress. We could notice the dust and the things never touched behind the counter. Kinda like "if you dont use it get rid of it" thing. So it has a run down feel as well. After we ordered our food, it was plenty greasy and what do you expect from a old diner. However we did take a look at the kitchen (as you can see it sitting at the counter) and the cook looked a little....tired. Hes the kind of guy that you could see with a greasy t shirt that used to be white at some point. It wouldnt have shocked me if he was smoking (but he wasnt) while cooking. The equipment looked old and runned down. Pretty sure no one has up-kept this place as all. This place comes off as nasty to be honest. Im between the homeless that come in and out the place is ran down. Ive seen the yelp reviews of mice, and i hadnt seen any but I def could tell you I wouldnt have been surprised.

A good, hearty breakfast for a Saturday morning. I had the corned beef hash and my friend had some pancakes. I really enjoyed the hash, eggs, and hash browns, although there was next to no butter on the toast. Service was slightly slow getting started, but after that the meal arrived quickly. I would definitely go again.

Lucky Cafe used to be "the" breakfast spot for coworkers & my sister and I in the 90's. The country potatoes, the chicken sausage, the omelets and the pancakes were the best and we left feeling full, happy and totally amp'd on too much strong coffee. Times have changed, Lucky Cafe has changed. We came here after giving up on the 1 hour wait time at Bacon & Butter - I was hungry, hadn't had any coffee yet and b-mode was starting to take over. Once at Lucky, we were seated right away. We ordered the chicken fried steak w/country gravy. It came w/hash browns, choice of toasts and 2 eggs. Suffice it to say it was not the old Lucky Cafe. The food was ok, but the special eye rolling yum factor from the old days was not on our plates, in fact the only part of our breakfast that had any similarity to the old days was th strong coffee. But here's the thing that made this disappointing experience special, and why I'm giving Lucky 3 stars - the owner. We had a candid conversation with the him about our lackluster experience & instead of becoming defensive and obnoxious, he welcomed the feedback and actually listened. So the bad news is Lucky has had some hard times that sort of knocked the wind out of their sail. The good news is, they're willing to acknowledge the need for improvement and they seem committed to getting things right. In fact the owner asked us to return in a couple months so we can experience the improvements. I'll definitely be back because I have so many great memories of this place and I'm looking forward to making a bunch of new ones. The owner's open and humble attitude makes me believe that they're going to pull it together soon!

If I could give this place no stars I would. I came here back in December when I first moved to Sacramento. It's a really cute place and has an old school vintage diner feel. It looks really community oriented and friendly. I heard about it through help and decided to give it a try. I got there 2 hours before they closed and I sat at the diner island and ordered a coffee and a breakfast meal after waiting 20 minutes for the lady to take my order. 15 minutes after she took my order she came back to me and told me they are closing the kitchen and that they can't take my order. She basically told me to leave and that they can't serve me. It turned me off from ever going back.

I'm really bummed to write this. I used to LOVE the Lucky Cafe (and used to check in almost every weekend) but after my second questionable experience in a row, I have to say that their issues seem to have become systemic. Disheveled service, food quality plummeting (not that it was ever health food anyway, but...), and casual friendliness factor seems to have been replaced by nervousness, uncertainty, and disconnectedness, with mild undertones of chaos and panic. Change your decor all you want. Make the place less dingy. New pain and menus are a good overall reset. But more important, keep your culture together. Keep the VIBE right. Lucky used to be a place where we all knew what we were getting, a Post-Hangover breakfast at our favorite midtown greasy spoon watering hole. If you didn't know the other patrons (which was rare), you knew the waitress and the bussers. And no matter how crazy-busy a day was, there was usually an air of fun and "oh well, another crazy day" about the place. Now? It just feels like everyone is on pins and needles, running around crazy. The service has bee bad, albeit apologetic for it (which is cold comfort), and the food often comes out wrong, with seemingly no discernible explanation for it. And they've raised prices and cut some services. Like... really, I have to ORDER toast now with a meal that in the past it's ALWAYS come with. I mean, I'm glad you standardized a custom order that my friend and I encouraged everyone to modify, and I'm good with raising that price to compensate, but TOAST? That just seems like a petty place to save a couple cents. If your margin on bread is what will make or break the business, then you guys have bigger issues that the color of the paint and the font on the menu. I can appreciate progress when it's ACTUAL progress. But in this case, I liked it when it used to be a good place.

I try to get in here twice a month or so. The waitress staff is always the same, sweet and helpful. The owner is always here and is an awesome cook everything is always perfect. I personally think the sausage links and hash browns are outta this world. I'm glad the staff and cook never changes. They've grown on me and I'm glad the menu doesn't change. They stick with what works in that department. Prices are good and they don't seem to change either. It has the old time feel with an awesome lunch counter. They have recently painted the inside a yellowish color which livens up the place a bit. The building is old and the ceilings are high so it's not dust free but who cares? Some people knock this place for being old and dusty. It's like comparing a mustang to a Ferrari. This isn't Ruth's Chris, it's a bad ass breakfast joint. The reason I give this place 4 stars instead of 5, is because my son doesn't like it here. He doesn't like it here because they don't really have a happening kids menu. He enjoys fruit topped waffles which they don't offer. So unfortunately when I have him, we swing by black bear diner, blah! And the only other thing I don't like is the TV. Watching TV while you're out to eat seem odd to me. Tip your waitress and tip them good, they're excellent. Don't be cheap!

To be fair, I probably set my expectations to high before I walked into this place. I guess I assumed a place that was open almost completely with the purpose of serving breakfast would have some more specialty items on the breakfast menu. Their menu is basically 15 different combo variations of the same four breakfast items. (Eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast). Where are the normal staples like a breakfast burrito or eggs Benedict. Anyways, I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. If you want an average breakfast with an average price, this is the place for you. If you like to order the basic breakfast items like scrambled eggs and hash browns this might be the basic breakfast diner you have been looking for.

I had never been to Lucky Cafe, and will not be returning. I went on a Tuesday morning, it was dead at 8am. Like I was one of 2 people, plus the 3 staff. Met 2 other people for breakfast. They had omelets, they looked well made. I had hash browns (outstanding), 2 eggs over easy (cold) and chicken fried chicken. I wish I had ordered something different. Chicken was sub-par, with A LOT of connective tissue and about 2x the breading that was needed. The gravy had to have been from a can. If not, the chef needs a crash course in scratch cooking. It was a tasteless glob of white spooned over the middle of the chicken. It was not even warm enough to actually run off the chicken, it just sat like a blob of opaque jello. Needless to say...not tasty. Prices were certainly not fantastic, but really what does it matter. The quality was poor. I liked the decor, it's older but had a cool vibe. Too bad the food doesn't match.

Lucky Cafe is definitely a LIKES breakfast establishment. My SO and I are constantly searching for the perfect breakfast location that suits both our needs, and sometimes we forget how much we enjoy Lucky Cafe. Having been gluten free for a few years I can find a way to modify almost any menu. We have been coming to Lucky Cafe over the past several years and we are happy with our experience 95% of the time (no one's perfect all the time). Lucky Cafe is like an old reliable friend...familiar, friendly, and warm and cozy. My SO always gets the #7 and is always happy with this. I typically just order one of their egg dishes over potatoes sans the eggs (gross). Their dishes have plenty of flavor and their sausage is the best in town. If you are looking to leave full and satisfied, or to grease up to help the hangover, this is your place! Another great element is the owner, Mel, is always in the kitchen cooking up a storm.

Second weekend in a row And am disappointed. The service Is horrible. And the food quality has decreased. Bacon is rubbery not crispy. We waited 10 minutes to order and then food did not come all together. This is a repeat of last weekend. We also watched as people Waited for over 15 minutes at the counter to only move closer to the kitchen to get. Waitresses attention. My wife and I use to be loyal customers at Lucky cafe as you can see from past reviews but after two sub standard experiences with the food and service we will not be back.

Their service is really slipping. I was not greeted like I was before and the waitress didn't seem to be eager to help me. The pancakes that I ordered to go were dry, and they slipped in a $0.50 take out order charge. While $0.50 is not a huge deal, they should have been upfront about that instead of being dishonest by sneaking it into the check. I won't be back here again.

Basic but very good quality breakfast and sizable portions. Less of a dive after a recent remodel. Breakfast is standard fare - highlight for me is the chicken-fried steak. Also the biscuits and gravy as its one of the best in town. The biscuits are good but nothing outstanding, but the CF steak is juicy with a thick crisp batter. The sausage gravy is excellent - not greasy or flour-y - one of the best in town and I try it everywhere. Am picky about my eggs getting fried right and they always manage it (over medium-well). They also have a great assortment of sausages. Can get just about any kind you want here. Congrats to them for finally renovating. I enjoy a good dive as much as anyone - its mostly about the food to me. Have seen at least a couple of groups consider Lucky as they gave up on Bacon/Butter next door - only to look at it and get turned off by the dive looks. They finally recovered the bar stools and booth benches, painted and looks like they're doing a mural on the wall. Much better looking and much cleaner looking. Glad the food tastes as good as before. Still one of our favorite breakfast places in town.

I would have given it a 1 but they have dressed up the joint recently, but man, I will never go back, last 2 times coming here the service was terrible! To the point where our food came before our silverware, we never got a coffee refill or a "how is everything? " My son accidentally spilled my cup of coffee on the r table and booth, the bus boy saw what happened but as I stood and waited for help cleaning it, it was like I was invisible! I ended up cleaning the mess myself with like 50 napkins. Food was just ok. Next time I will try Kupros down the street!

Another dose of pure authentic. This place is old, creaky and serves up damn good eggs. The sausage was so good, I swore it was from outer space. The coffee hit the spot and had me wiry for a few too many hours. All in all, a very decent place to eat. Tragically, like far too many other places, it's only open in the mornings. I don't know why so many Sacramento restaurants think that people don't eat after 2pm, but it's an ugly thing. Considering how close this is to so many bars/clubs/nightspots, can you imagine enjoying those eggs at 3am? Or even after work at 6pm? Ah, dare to dream....

this place was simply amazing! I came her with my girlfriend on a first date the food was cheap, taste great, and was filling. The service was wonderful and the few times ive been there its never overly packed so the food comes out quick! Ps. you can get Bacon inside of the waffle INSIDE

I love these small, locally owned, breakfast diners. Lucky's is the type of breakfast diner that you expect to see in the movies. Upon walking in, you got the kitchen bar to the right and booths to the left. The boss recommended this place for breakfast and to talk shop. The restaurant is clean, the staff was nice, and the food is priced just about right for what they serve. As for the food, most of us got a very hearty breakfast. When I say most, that means everyone but me. Everyone got eggs, bacon, omelets, pancakes, and hash browns. I didn't try any of it, but based on their empty plates at the end, their food must have been good. For me, it was just your basic 6 egg white omelet with a side of turkey sausage. For an added touch, I had some spinach added to my omelet. I know that this sounds boring and rather tasteless, but to be honest, it was really good and very tasty. Not everyone can make a mean egg white omelet that hits the spot. Lucky Cafe sure did. If you're in the area for breakfast, give Lucky Cafe a shot. PS: Parking is minimal here, but there's plenty of street parking. YELP PERSONAL CHALLENGE 2013 - (437/500)

Finally done with this place! Decided to have breakfast there this morning and it was a joke. After sitting in our booth for over 20 minutes, we finally got up and asked if we could get a server. While our server was not unfriendly, she was incompetent at best. We placed our order and I asked for coffee. It would have been really nice if we had been informed that they were out of hashbrowns, as both my order and my friend's order were supposed to have them. After placing our order we waited another thirty minutes for our food. Still no coffee. My friend's dish was an avocado spinach tomato plate, but there was no avocado. My breakfast was supposed to include toast, but she never brought it, despite my asking about it nicely several times. It was nice that my friend ordered a side of toast and did receive his. Both our dishes came out with a very thin sliced potatoes and when we asked about it we were rudely told that they were out of hashbrowns (might have been nice to mention that when we placed our orders). When my friend asked about the avocado that should have been on his order, the waitress acted frustrated and told us to pay a different price than what was on the ticket and she would "take it out of her tips." The whole experience was a joke, we could have gotten much better food and decent service any other place in town, needless to say, neither of us will be back after having been loyal customers for years.

Cute little hole-in-the-wall diner. Great food. Simple menu. Endless refills on coffee. I love the old-fashioned decor with the old-timey photos and posters. Their belgian waffles are huge, and delicious. I also like to order the fruit and oatmeal breakfast from time to time (okay okay, it's so I don't feel too guilty!) and it's yummy and very filling. The staff is always very friendly. The portions are large. The prices are affordable. This is one of my favorite breakfast places in downtown Sacramento.

For my birthday, a friend took me out to breakfast at Lucky Cafe. It is her favorite breakfast place. I love a good greasy spoon and this place fits the bill. The decor is eclectic at best but the food is wonderful. I had the chorizo and loved it. She ordered the Lucky Scramble, one of her favorites, and I watched her eyes roll into the back of her head in sheer bliss. We split an order of the pancakes and my mouth was in heaven. Doused in melted butter and dripping in syrup, this is as good as a diner breakfast gets. Yes, we ate too much. It was that good. The one common complaint that I have about almost every breakfast diner is that the coffee is lackluster. If that had been a top notch cup of coffee rather than the standard slightly burnt cup-o-joe, then I would have pushed this rating up to a 5 star.

So, this is the first time that I have been here. The food was so good! I haven't had food in these types of places that satisfied my hunger in so long. The country potatoes are so good. And the country fried steak was great. I'll definitely come back again

Decent food. Extremely poor service during rush hour. My advice to management: Don't skimp on staff during the rush! It's not like it's a big surprise. I was totally ignored for 30 minutes while a raucous group of frat boys monopolized the waitress' attention. Eventually, some busboy asked if I wanted some coffee or something. Boo. As I've said, the food is decent most times, but can be hit or miss. I dislike onions, so it was disappointing to find them in my order when it wasn't mentioned in the menu. Really, though, I understand that I am in the extreme minority on this issue and I'm probably expecting too much. The prices are ok.

I owned this place. No literally. My family and I have owned and operated this Greasy Spoon for over 14 years. I have to say that it wasn't a party- but the share of Rockstars, politicians, sports names, and overall HAPPY PEOPLE have made the experience sooo amazing. We recently sold the Lucky Cafe 2 years ago, and have found ourselves on the receiving end of eating there. With that, all I can say to you is, I would rather have a booth instead.=D Of course, like the saying goes, "You can't always have what you want" , but if an omelet is what you desire, I would still consider the Lucky Cafe as a weekend breakfast destination. The current owner still owes us money, and that is why I frequent the place, but if I were really thinking of making a stop for breakfast, from a former regular to a first timer, I would have with me: A firm attachment to what I'm going for, breakfast style. My family/friends stick close to me, being that I'm the leader of the party. Confusion about about my leadership by the time I get seated, and a save the funny faces for the end. Because what I gathered from my journey with the Lucky Cafe is that there are always other places to go eat. Lol, J/k..... too much dish washing fumes during my tenure.

Perfect example a place that had potential, and really looked like it was going to deliver... I mean, when a place looks and feels that old and run down, I usually expect a good old fashioned country style breakfast, but This wasn't the case here. Instead, the food reflected the old and run-down mentality with no sense of pride or any concern for quality. Very disappointing. I ordered a Sante Fe Omelette with Habanero Sausage ($11.25) with a pancake on the side rather than toast, with country potatoes rather than hash browns (an extra $1.50), an an orange juice ($4), which all rang up to $16.75. Definitely not a cheap breakfast. The food came out pretty fast, and my stomach was screaming for food, so I didn't complain. That pancake looked mighty fine, so I quickly took a bite of it, and it was excellent (best thing on the table as it turned out). Next I went in for the kill, shoved a nice big piece of that omelette in my mouth... and damn near spit it out a few seconds later. Something had gone terribly wrong, and I immediately knew that this meal was gonna be rough. The omelette was horrible! I scanned the plate and noticed the Country Potatoes, they looked overcooked and totally unappealing, and their looks didn't deceive. What a disappointment. Two things about the omelet worth pointing out. First of all, it is NEVER, EVER!!! okay to use processed cheeses such as American or any other "fake" (as I like to call it) cheese in a dining establishment under the description of cheese. It is a misrepresentation of the facts and I don't appreciate it. It also shows no pride in your menu, and promises that I will never come back. When asked what kind of cheese was used, I was answered with "Monterey Jack"... Don't give me that $%!#. Second, they use sausage from Costco, not that that's a bad thing, it just means that many folk (myself included) will be familiar with the flavors. I happen to hate the Habanero sausage there.. I musta been thinking they actually made their own or something crazy like that... so my bad on that selection. Needless to say, I will never be back, and hope the owner of this place reads this and gets his act together. I can't respect a restaurant that doesn't respect itself. get some furniture, and replace your entire kitchen.

I come for the food, not the ambiance! The place is old, the menus are sticky, and there are collapsible plastic tables, but the friendly service and killer food keep me coming back for more! The pancakes are rich and buttery, the bacon is thick yet crispy, and the eggs are cooked to perfection. The Belgium waffle is great too, so thick and yummy! I definitely will be coming back!

I want to nominate this place for one of those shows where they make over the restaurant. The food here is LEGIT. So good. Best breakfast around, especially after a night of debauchery. The worst part is the ambiance. It's the definition of a greasy spoon. It makes you winder if the place is completely sanitary. A big part of me doesn't care though because it's so good. Recommend #10 for a veggie and meat filled scramble, comes with amazing crispy hash browns. Add a side of biscuits and gravy and you're good to go. The pepper plant sauce is a must. It goes so well with the hash browns and scramble. Yum yum. Only recommendation: Update your look, Lucky Cafe!

After hearing about this place a ton from friends, we finally came here. Great call. Diner-esq, you dont go there for the decor or even the comfortable booths (they dont have any). Extremely busy popular place, midtown location, has great food. Also a ton of it. We got the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. it was great. There was a large party next to us who got their food before us. They got a ton of food, the pancakes were huge, the biscuits and gravy were awesome looking. Things to get for next time. Go here, the service started out great but she was very busy and seemed to rush us and if we asked for something else, she gave us that anything else now? look. Overall, prices were a tad high but the food was good, service was overall above average. Come here for a big hearty breakfast.

After leaving the breakfast paradise of Portland and living for six years where we couldn't find a good morning meal, I can't get enough of Sacramento's amazing morning eats. When we're in the mood for the best waffles in the world, there is no place like the Lucky Cafe. Almost like a popover on the inside, crispy and delicious on the outside. When the server suggested getting the waffle with the bacon inside -- it comes with an egg any style and two strips of bacon--I couldn't resist. Best decision ever! While I'm usually an omelet person, I'd walk a mile for these waffles, and I usually do. Nice staff, great location, and comforting food.

Hole in the wall lunch counter type place with way outdated décor. But if you want delicious breakfasts (chorizo and hash browns, biscuits and gravy, eggs benedict, etc) and friendly service this is the place. Even the coffee was decent. Will come back again.

Went in this morning and I must admit, I enjoyed it. Had the corned beef hash and loved it. The service was terrible because it was slammed with people so I can't blame them. I loved my breakfast and will come back again. as a side note, if they added grits to their menu I would probably go in once a week.

the chorizo was a big hit. the corned beef hash, a disappointment depite being described as best ever. meh at best. eggs and ham = not good. the scrambled eggs seemed off...pre-made perhaps? the ham was tough....overcooked i suppose. 42 dollar tab for three breakfasts? at those prices, i don't expect to sit on fold-up chairs at a plastic table from Costco unless the food is top notch.

Three might be a tad generous but it's kind of hard to say because I spent 1/3 of the time there in a cozy little room by myself in the back. You know, the one with the cold seat? Ug. I ordered the eggs and tomatoes and while the eggs were done to practical perfection, I'm not sure I cared entirely for the flavor of the tomatoes, which were sauteed in garlic -- the ingredient of my life right after salt. The hashbrowns were model hashbrowns. Poster child, really. It's almost a catch 22 coming here because it's a great greasy spoon for the hangover but maybe too much greasy spoon for the hangover. Take my advice and eat slowly. I learned the hard way.

Super disappointing! The place is dirty and really old. Kind of what we were expecting. Old is ok. Dirty is not. Food was ok. Good hash browns. Kids liked their eggs & bacon but didn't eat the French toast. Hubby got the corned beef which the menu says is the best you'll ever taste. It was "Edible", in his words. I got the eggs benedict. The fruit was decent for this time of year (Dec), coffee was good, hollandaise not very good. English muffin barely toasted. Ham was so-so. The menu said $7.50 and they charged us $8.95 for it. When I let them know they made a mistake they said, "oh the menu prices are old." That was it. Ummm... it's only $1.50, but that was really shitty that they can't update their "really" old menu, and that they wouldn't adjust our bill to reflect their advertised price. It just doesn't seem right to tell people what they are ordering costs one thing and then to charge them more when it comes time to pay. Definitely won't go back. Can't imagine how this place was voted one of the best in Sacramento. Go a few doors down to Bacon & Butter. Money much more well spent - place is clean, and their menu prices are accurate too. Imagine that.

Great vibe, awesome little diner. Super super friendly staff. Great breakfast at an affordable price. You walk out of this place feeling like a million bucks and you probably spent well under $10 with quite a full belly. If your in sac, this is breakfast!

Came here with the boyfriend for breakfast yesterday as I noticed the great reviews however I didnt think it was out of this world or anything. It was good.. like any other breakfast spot but $27 for 2 omelettes (came with hashbrowns and toast) one coffee and one orange juice ... I dont know I thought that was a bit overpriced. Would rather go to Cornerstone to be honest. It filled my tummy and I wasnt hunched over with a belly ache after so I will give it an A-OK! :)

I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the atmosphere. Its pretty divey but the food and service were still great! You have to try the hot sauce! Sourdough toast, hash browns and veggi-potato platter were phenomenal. My girlfriend got the chorizo scramble which was also great!

I heard good reviews about this place and was excited when groupon offered a half price coupon for it ($16 for the price of $8). So I took my hubby there for a weekday lunch, knowing they serve breakfast all day. The decor is typical dive-type long counter and booths. I figured it's one of those gem type places, a diamond in the rough that could be on a Triple D episode. We sat at a booth and read some old reviews posted about the cafe, ones in which they were named amongst the best restaurants for food in this area (grouped with Paragary's, La Italia, and such). So, needless to say my excitement grew. I got the corned beef hash - one of there specialty dishes. The hash was mediocre at best, I think I've had better from a can, and I've certainly had better at Denny's. Hashbrowns and eggs were ok, but how can you mess up over-medium eggs. My toast was dry and tasted like a big buttered crouton; I guess someone didn't get the butter on it right after toasting. My husband's burger was ordered medium-well, but came out over-done and dry. He did get a ton of fries, which were piping hot and yummy. The service was ok; our waters were refilled promptly, but we had to hunt someone down to get our check (there was only one other couple dining there when we needed to check out, so why was it so hard to find someone to bring us a check?) I really wanted to like this place, and was expecting some good food for $12 a plate (for breakfast?!?) But it wasn't meant to be. Some places make up for mediocre food by giving you lots of it, but alas that wasn't the case for my breakfast. I've paid less than half the price for better and more food at Waffle House - so disappointing!! Our bill came up to $22 for two meals and water, so we still owed on top of the $16 groupon thingy, plus tip. All I can say is at least I didn't pay full price, but mad at myself for buying two groupon thingy's for this place!

Disclosure: I have a high tolerance for greasy spoons. I like Lucky. Their breakfast dishes are standard, which isn't really standard anymore.I love the bacon-in waffles. The hash browns are what they should be, golden, crispy and delicious. They do eggs over-easy the way I like them. The lunches are fine as well. The Lucky Burger is sort of a 'western' as it comes with a huge onion ring in it. Their chili burger is alright with me. I once had a meeting with some older Native Americans in the back room and they were very pleased. They like simple food with no surprises. That's what you get al Lucky Cafe. I don't think I have ever had the same server twice, but I don't go very often. The decor is about what you'd expect...which is not necessarily a bad thing. Cheaply framed prints of cliche photographs that were once important in some way. Who cares? Not I!

My friends and I took a bike ride in the cool pre-autumn air this morning to Lucky Cafe for dollar hot cakes and other exciting breakfast foods. Our server was Damien and we LOVE him! He was nice, attentive, entertaining and genuine. Our food was delightful. Crispy hash browns, decent bacon, consistently refilled coffee. We didn't order anything creative, just standard breakfast stuff. Everything that we asked for was brought to the table on sturdy diner china. What more can you ask from a breakfast joint? I tried to use my debit card but they would rather not take them any more. There is an ATM there so that we, the consumers, can pay the extra charge for forgetting cash instead of the small business owner. OK by me. Some day I will remember that I want to pay cash at small businesses BEFORE I leave the house. Until then, the ATM charge is a good motivator.

I have been coming here since 1989 and I love it! This 60's style greasy spoon diner serves up the best breakfast in town! They have a loyal following of customers and it's a great place to bring the morning paper to kickback and enjoy your breakfast. The pancakes are old school delicious and the sausages they serve are as fat as my dog! I have yet to ever have a bad meal here. The wait staff is terrific and very friendly. During great weather when the tables are set up outside the cafe is pet friendly. We are Lucky to the the Lucky Cafe in our town so come on down to have one of the best breakfasts in town!

First try: we ate breakfast in the back room, with the plastic furniture. There was an NA breakfast at the nearby tables. They were interesting to listen to. I ordered the corned beef hash, which was mediocre. A bit mushier than I'd like. Took a long time to order because the menu is about 30 pages long. Next try, I ordered the chili cheese omelet, which sounded like a good hangover cure. Alas, it was not to be. But we did order a bacon-stuffed waffle "for the table," which was awesome. Definitely my next order if I return here.

Overpriced and overgreased eggs over easy = not feeling quite so lucky afterwards. Every time I come here the check gives me heartburn. A sixty dollar breakfast? Are you kidding me? No matter which of the meat plates I order, all the sausages taste the same. Bland. Blah. My eggs and tomatoes were dripping with grease this morning. The hash browns were greasy and limp and undercooked. The only high point was watching the waitress pour my mimosa. Champagne all the way to the top, with a splash of OJ. Now THAT'S worth the price of admission.

In town for 4th July from Souther CA. We came here once before and it was fantastic. Showed up on the 4th and they were closed. Showed up on the 5th at 11:30 and there was a Closed sign in the window but the door was open and people were eating. I went in, sat down, and asked a man if they were open. He said yes. My bf was paying for the meter. Then a lady w bad teeth came to tell me they were closed. I told her I asked the man and he said they would take us. She apologized and said no and they were closing in 30 mins. UGH. She felt bad when I told her we were from out of town but she was firm on not serving us. No big deal. We came back on the 6th and they were open for business. Ordered Tomatoes w eggs over olive oil and garlic. Wasnt fabulous. Lacked flavor and suuuper oily. Had a bite of my friends french toast and that was good. Sat on a very lumpy booth that was difficult to get comfortable in. No a/c running and it was in the mid 90's that day. Only a couple ceiling fans, stuffy and hot inside. Not as good as I remembered this place to be. I will try it one more time the next time I visit. We'll see if it remains in our dining rotation when we visit Sacramento a couple times a year. Our waitress was sirupy sweet but attentive.

The apple wood smoked bacon breakfast is to die for! Today however two issues surfaced, first one of the pieces of bacon was all fat, second the eggs were ordered over medium (no runny whites) but they came out over easy, :-(, hopefully next time it will be better.

This morning I had an intense craving for hash browns. I asked Twitter where I should go, as well as yelped "hash browns" and Lucky Cafe popped up as a suggestion. I'm so glad it did because it was phenomenal. I ordered an avocado/swiss/mushroom omelet with a side of hash browns and every bite was srsly delicious. The hash browns were buttery and just the right crispiness. The staff was friendly and helpful. The waitress refilled our coffee without us having to ask & even joined in with me on singing along to the songs that played on the restaurant radio. My boyfriend and I both left completely satisfied & will definitely be back again soon.

The food itself was fine- nothing spectacular but fine. The hash browns were definitely some of the best ones I've had in a while, but mostly because they were on the crispy side, which is exactly how I like them, but the service was pretty bad. Granted, it was a Sunday brunch and they were pretty busy but I'd have to say it was the worst service I have had in a while. First of all, the coffee the waitress brought out was lukewarm and she forget to bring cream- no big deal. That can be fixed... if she had come back out to check on us. One of the members of my party finally got up and wen to the counter to ask for a fresh cup . The food came out in a reasonable time frame but she forgot the side of bacon and we had to ask for jelly ( they only have sugar free by the way), hot sauce, and more coffee and water. She didn't come by to check on us for quite a while and even when she dropped the check, didn't clear plates and oh yeah, forgot to add up the check total or tax. After another 10-15 minutes had passed, we finally went up to the counter to pay since we need change and didn't want to leave cash on the table outside. It was the first time I had been there and was a little disappointed since I had heard pretty good things about the place. I would probably be willing to give the place another chance, but honestly, its not at the top of my list for weekend brunches.

Yummmm! I have been here a couple of times for some greasy food the morning after drinking it up in Midtown. They have just the right thing for everyone, as long as you're not vegan of course. The eggs and hashbrowns are all I ever need!!

Greasy Spoon all the way! I love this place for a great hang-over meal. Yum. The prices are good, its usually packed on the weekends, my services has always been friendly and well i like food thats cheap and yummy. heh. You have to try the chicken fried chicken if you like that kind of thing. It has a light breading and the chicken was juicy and super tasty. Accompanied with some eggs, hashbrowns, and a mimosa! On Spot! Check it out sometime. I think they close about 2pm though, so get there before then!

Standard greasy spoon old style breakfast joint. When I lived close by I'd come here often for the convenience. Portions are large. Service is friendly.

Walked right in and seven of us where seated right away. Our waitress Jennifer was delightful and full of Halloween fun dressed with kitty ears and rhinestone Halloween t-shirt! I ordered hash browns, two eggs and toast. Other people had ordered French toast, biscuits and gravy to omelets. All of it looked great and all I know is when the food was placed everyone was SILENT chowing down their food. Coffee sucked but other than that all was YUM!

3rd time visit, 3rd time sorry for it. My husband and son and I have visited Lucky Cafe three times in the last year---I so wanted to love it. Being new in town, we felt this would become our "go to" spot for breakfast in Midtown. Each time, I wondered about the cleanliness of the tables, booths, etc. But let it pass the first couple of times and enjoyed the "charm" so many other reviewers refer to. I don't think any owner would be working toward that "charm" on purpose. I think he/ she is lazy with an overworked staff. This last time, even my 10 year old son remarked about how sticky and utterly disgusting the menus were. They were filthy like they had been laying in the alley through winter rains and hobos used them to sit on---really!!! They were a science experiment. I love the taste of the salsa/ hot sauce but when I picked it up to use on my eggs, my fingers actually stuck to it! The top of it hadn't been cleaned in a really long time. Really gross. The old fashioned food service squeezee bottle is "charm", the filth on it isn't. Each time I have eaten there, I have been conservative---getting simple eggs, maybe bacon to share and toast with coffee. This last time, I got the scrambled eggs with tomatoes, spinach and avocado cooked in olive oil--I even went without the hashbrowns. The predominant flavor was garlic from a jar---too much of it. I ate about half and instantly felt my stomach rumble. (I had less rumbling after eating in the bush of Uganda, by the way). This feeling kept getting increasingly worse over the day until I was sick and bedridden for the afternoon until mid-day the next day. I realized that each of the three times I have eaten there I have gotten ill--gastrointestinally. My son and husband seem to be unaffected by the food---but not so by the price! I cannot believe that three breakfasts--all very simple came to $42 with tip!! What???? My suggestions to the owners if you want to continue to charge what you currently do: Clean your restaurant! Clean your grills, utensils, bathrooms, tables, booths, MENUS, squirt bottles and floors RIGHT NOW before you make any one else sick. My next suggestion is until they do clean the place, the only folks I would recommend to pay a visit is the health department.

Fun spot for a breakfast or lunch - a bit retro - I like the 50's decor that looks like it just never got updated for 50 years - prices okay - food's okay. I love the BLT - straight up old school. Small and intimate feel. Prefer Cafe Bernardo or maybe Cornerstone for breakfast in the same price range, but it's a good bet if your in the neighborhood and want a decent meal.

I like having breakfast for lunch sometimes and this is one of the greasy spoons I like stopping into from time to time. The Good: I'm picky about my eggs. I get them over easy and they are spot on every time. Whites are cooked and the yolks are runny. Was pleasantly surprised that the chicken fried steak wasn't a preprocessed meat patty like Denny's or IHOP serves. The Bad: The hashbrowns have been exceptionally greasy every time I've been there. The corn beef and hash leaves a lot to be desired and resembles Alpo. Its pricey for what it is. My verdict: Its hard to recommend this place over Cornerstone just a few blocks away, BUT theres enough good to eat here occasionally.

I have traveled frequently to Sacto for business over the last six years. On perhaps 50 occasions, I've been 'that guy' in a suit, sitting at the bar or in one of the decrepit booths, fingering his Smart Phone / then Blackberry / now iPhone while devouring one of their omelets and trying to keep the hot sauce off of my tie. Sadly, I'm not in town as much as I used to be, so here's a list of what I miss about Lucky Cafe: 1. Those booths. For some reason, I have a pleasant visceral memory of the way that their ancient booths seem to bottom-out when you plop down in them. How many thousands of asses does it take to put that kind of wear and tear into a booth? 2. The previous waitstaff. I don't mean to dis the current management, who seem just fine to me. But for years, I was served by the same shy, introverted waitress. After some time, I deduced that her name was probably Sunny (there was a list next to the cash register that was visible when sitting at the bar). Did she ever recognize me after all those visits? Apparently not, but that's OK. I could always count on Sunny's quiet and dependable care. Hope she's OK, where ever she is. 3. Omelets! Those damn omelets are awesome, especially if you customize them a bit -- maybe add some avocado to the turkey and swiss, for example. Always hot, always huge. Mmmm. 4. Hash-freaking-browns, people. Those hashbrowns are the kind of thing that I should NEVER eat, but willpower doesn't run strong in my family. Crispy on the outside, hot and steamy in the middle. Oh, yea. 5. That hot sauce. Where the hell do you get Peppermill hot sauce? I could bathe in that stuff, but I've never seen it anywhere else. Oddly, it seems that they reuse the bottles, since the labels are usually rather worn, and I know that they refrigerate them at night because the bottles were always damp with condensation when I came in. Something of a mystery, if you think about it, since nobody treats Tabasco this way. I never really figured this out (never really tried, actually). Love that stuff. 6. Complete absence of decor. Even though I'm an architect, there's something completely charming about the unmitigated lack of anything you'd call a style or a theme. Sure, there are remnants of half-hearted decorating efforts from the past like the framed posters and so forth. But these are faded and incomplete, purely vestigial. At the end of the day, Lucky Cafe is where aesthetics goes to die. And that's OK -- just keep making those omelets and hashbrowns, guys. I miss you, Lucky Cafe. Do you ever miss me?

Nothing flashy at this small, unassuming eatery. Basic food and reasonable prices. Counter runs down the left side of the room, and booths line up on the right. Enjoyed a mushroom and swiss cheese omelet, with hash browns. Loads of cheese in the omelete, plus a slice on top for good measure. You get your money's worth here. Arrive hungry!

Lucky cafe doesn't have the greatest breakfast grub around, but they sure do go out of their way to get food to your table quickly the way you want it. They'll even gladly take anything back if you're unhappy. Toast too charred? Eggs too runny? Lucky you, you don't have to fret. But at a place like Lucky Cafe, just let me be and I'll go to town with it. Fork, pepper plant hot sauce and ketchup... Thanks, I'll probably be back.

I can't believe that I've never, ever, ever, heard of this place nor eaten here at all before! We met a bunch of friends for breakfast here and I honestly had no idea what this place was going to be like. I did think it was owned by an Asian person and most likely served fried rice or spam with their breakfasts because of the name, "lucky". The moment I entered the restaurant, I knew this place was going to be a gem. You can tell that this place has been around for years from the booth seats, to the counter tables and bar stools, to the tile floors. Loved every nook and corner of it! I had to order as much as I could. I got pancakes, hashed brown, two large eggs (over medium) and bacon. The food came super fast and it looks very delicious. Eggs were cooked to perfection, hash browns were crispy on the outside and tender in the inside, pancakes were soooo yummy!!!! I think they were my favorite part of the meal. I could have eaten all three pancakes, but cautiously didn't. If you are looking for a great breakfast joint on a weekend, this is the place to enjoy it. Service is good. Food is good.

This is how breakfast is done in midtown!!! I've never had a disappointing breakfast at the Lucky Cafe. From their pancakes to their hash browns, to their always perfect scrambled eggs, Lucky Cafe is always great.

  • Taylor S.

This is my go-to hangover breakfast spot. Quick ass service is one of the kickers. Also, the eggs made to order are always made how I ask for them, which is so hard to come by at diners these days. Great omelets/ omelet menu in general! I have the avocado and cheese veggie omelet and it was to die for! The toast is what seals the deal on everything. I always get the #4 which is an egg, I get it with one piece of bacon and one sausage, hash browns and sourdough toast, sometimes I get the #6 which is the same thing with two eggs. Also, their bacon waffle is out of this world. You gotta try it, at least once to say you did. Their pancakes are delish, and the maple syrup is always hot. Even when this place is super super busy, which happens cuz it's friggin popular, and the servers are running around with their heads cut off they manage to make sure your coffee cup is full.

Went there for an early afternoon breakfast. Was very good. The prices are definitely on the cheap. Their portions were very large. I guess we all kinda stumbled out of there. I wasn't a fan of the country potatoes but everything else was delicious. Funny I'd passed this place a hundred times without realizing it. Kind of a dive but worth it. The booths were even patched up with tape. Lol.

Lucky Cafe has a good dive-y feel to it. The skillet I had was tasty and got me full. Free refills on coffee is a big plus. Even though I wasn't completely happy with the service I might be back.

Perfect hole in the wall breakfast diner with crappy weak coffee, my favorite! I went with my family the morning before the day of the marathon, and the hash browns were perfect to begin our carbo loading. yum! I got the #3-tomatoes and eggs, loved it but i happen to love garlic along with the never ending garlic breath it comes with. My only advice is to specify what cheese you want. My sister ordered a vegetarian omelet that said was made with swiss but unfortunately came with a cleverly disguised white American cheese, no good. Dad loved his lucky scramble and licked his plate clean, although not saying much as us distance runners usually have no problem finishing over sized portions.

Stopped in to this cafe to recover from an otherwise long night with the hope that the food would be cheap and calorie laden. Ordered biscuits and gravy with eggs and sausage. The eggs and breakfast meat were very tasty, as was the gravy, but I wasn't a huge fan of their biscuits. I couldn't tell if they had been made in house or were some processed, out-of-a-can form of baked good. They had the appearance and consistency of being the latter, but the taste wasn't all that bad. Will definitely return to try something else another time. Also noted, while the cafe takes all major credit cards, the min charge is ten bucks. Given the fairly cheap price of food, this might mean you pick up your friend's bill to meet their requirements. I'd advise having cash handy if you intend on frequenting the Lucky Cafe.

Decent breakfast, typical divey diner food but the service was amazing! Maybe a couple bucks more than I'd like to spend given the run down appearance, but all in all a good hearty breakfast.

Hangover food. If there are two words in the English language anyone needs to know, these are it. K--- and I decided that after a rousing night of Bar Review and hookah, we needed to wash the taste of ashtray from our mouths and see if the world would stop spinning long enough so that we might gather our bearings. So, we set out across Midtown with a vague notion that there might be food somewhere. After wandering down the wrong street for our intended destination, we decide to head toward the Weatherstone and get coffee. That is, until we saw this place. Hoping my initial impression of the place was true, ("If this place is as greasy as it looks, later I'm going to regret eating here.") we managed to order coffee. The decor has "character," and I'm pretty sure my grandmother has the same pattern on her countertops. I ordered the Spanish omelette and K--- got biscuits and gravy. The food was as expected: slathered in grease, heavy-handed and cheap. The omelette I got wasn't pretty but it tasted good, and the hash browns were the proper combination of salty and glazed in oil. K--- was confused as to the goal of the biscuits, since they were almost but not quite entirely unlike buttermilk, but his assessment of the gravy was favorable ("mmmmmm, salty"). As noted elsewhere, the coffee sucks, but that's par for the course. It really hit the spot, and (assuming I don't come to regret it) will likely become a Friday morning staple.

I really liked this place! I thought the decor was cozy and nice, the waitress and staff were all really friendly, food was delish. I ordered the spanish omelette and my boyfriend ordered the french toast. The spanish omelette had a great consistency of green chiles and salsa that wasn't over bearing and definitely hit the spot. The hash browns were some of the best I've had in town, especially since I usually take a lot of the salsa and mix it in with the hash browns. I really liked how big their breakfast menu is... it took me about 10 minutes to narrow my choices down to 3, and then the ultimate decision rests on gut instinct. We arrived right before noon because I enjoy sleeping in, so it wasn't hard getting a table. Only real negative was no eggs benadict on their menu... Oh yeah, if youre a sausage lover they have quite a lot of different kinds.

Your typical greasy spoon. Fairly impressive menu selection, and lots of options for someone like me who doesn't eat red meat. The pancakes there are really, really great. Fluffy, flavorful - they're my favorite. The hash browns are also really good (and I am very picky about my hash browns). However, don't expect to pay less for this meal because it's a greasy spoon - it's gonna put you back $12-15 per person. Kind of expensive for breakfast, but not crazy when compared to other breakfast places here in Sacramento. Oh, and the coffee is terrible.

Once again, a disclaimer. I have yet to eat here....but that is not without trying! After a long workout, my friend and I were starving to get some breakfast in us. We went to try out Lucky because we had heard good things. It was crowded when we got there and a bus boy sat us in the corner. I have to say, the seat and surrounding area was pretty grimy. dust everywhere, not the place you want to sit for breakfast. After sitting there for a good 10 minutes and getting no waitress services ( the bus boy did get us coffee), we decided to move over to a booth that opened up. As we were moving, we alerted the waitress that we were doing so and that we were ready to order. Another 10 minutes continues...again without anybody even checking in on us. At this point my body was eating its intestines and we decided it was time to flee this place....In the long run it was a great decision because we went a block away to Kupros. That place is bomb! I will be back for breakfast, but the first impression was not good.

Came here this morning for the first time with a friend - we always love a good breakfast and this restaurant did not disappoint. Love the retro ambiance, the friendly wait staff and the ability to sit and relax after eating a meal without being chased out of the restaurant. I enjoyed the yummy three pancake, 4 sausage, 2 egg deelishiousness albeit I agree with other posts that the coffee is weak. That's ok, though, because them sausages are slammin'! All in all, I will definitely be back. Alone or with whomever I can drag along for the ride!

  • Jayne W.

This really should be three stars because the ambience in the back room, with the plastic folding tables and chairs, is simply horrific. BUT the applewood smoked bacon, the corned beef hash, the pancakes, and the sausage are all exceptional. The (grated potato) hash browns were also outstanding, crisp without being burnt, rich without feeling greasy. The service was friendly and reasonably efficient, if a tad eccentric. People who complain about the prices should note the non-specialty items which are reasonable ($6.50-$7 for large portion of eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, toast.). Yeah, the applewood bacon breakfast is like $12, but it is sheer pork poetry. Ambience in the front room is pretty good. I can't WAIT to go back here and eat more bacon. Mmm... bacon.

A dive bar breakfast joint. Went here with another breakfast enthusiast. Shared a sweet plate as well as a savory one, to fully enjoy all the flavors a breakfast meal should include. We had an egg, potatoes, and gravy plate. The gravy was amazing - thick and hearty, and the potatoes and eggs flavorful. The adjoining dish was an order of waffles...WITH BACON, which was baked into the waffle itself. Perfectly thick and golden waffles, not too sweet, with crunchy bacon inside. The coffee was lacking but it didn matter - I pretty much licked my plate.

I've been driving by Lucky Cafe for years and always though, this looks like a place I would like. About 2 weeks ago I stopped in for breakfast. I sat at the bar, I'm a big guy and it was a bit cramped. The service was good, Coffee was decent, cream comes out of the lipless dispenser with vigor. Pour with caution. The atmosphere is quite pleasant and waitstaff prompt. I was looking for a standard, rustic, urban greasy spoon breakfast. I was well satisfied. The gritty bits: I perused the menu looking for the perfect thing. I was drawn between Biscuits and Gravy and Corned Beef Hash. I settled for the latter. It had a brief note below saying it was the "best I'd ever had", I was sold. I opted for a biscuit instead of toast. I bit later it came. I was expecting a blue ribbon corned beef hash, the likes of which I hadn't seen since The Scarlet Cafe or Hattie's Hat (Seattle). What came was the usual out of the can alpo-like ground mixture. The flavor was good. The chef did a good job with the layout, eggs over easy on top of the hash browns which were crispy. The corned beef hash took up less that a 1/3 of the plate (not what I had in mind). They forgot my biscuit and I had to remind them - I'm glad I did, it was probably the best biscuit I have had in a really long time. Eggs, Check. Biscuits, check. Didn't try the gravy, will next time. Corned beef hash and coffee for $18 for breakfast, not worth it. I'll be back for B&G.

I had to go to Lucky this afternoon due to a paralyzing hangover. This is the only place I know that has chicken fried chicken and eggs. I get to chow down on lightly breaded fried chicken breast for breakfast with gravy on the side and eggs over medium, all the while contemplating the circle of life that is in front of my on my plate. Chicken. Eggs. Fried runny deliciousness. Huge portions plus Pepper Plant sauce justify the aforementioned sky-high prices.

Lucky Cafe is a great little hole in the wall breakfast spot. Lots of homemade menu items. Everything is usually fresh and hot. Two complaints, the toast is usually limp and the coffee is usually weak. Other than that it rocks. I love the grilled tomatoes with garlic, eggs, and hashbrowns. Yum! My first day in Sacramento I went looking for food after unloading the uhaul and found Lucky. My to-go order was so big it ended up being almost 3 meals. I've been a fan ever since. The decor looks like it hasn't changed much in the last 50 years, which I love. The service is good too. The prices are a little high, but the portions are big, and the food is good. It's worth it. I think it's a lot better than Cornerstone which people seem to freak out over.

Well, I was a little resistant on the 3 stars..wanted to give 4..but.... So the boyfriend and I were hungry and needed to kill time, two good things. We decide we needed to find a diner. To my phone to yelp it I went! We pull up and he asks if this is really the place..as I glance up to it, I can see why he might be nervous, this place could use a face lift...though I kinda though it added to the whole vibe..maybe just a paint job. Anyhow, on to the food! We sit to order, once we are handed our menus my boyfriend looks instantly disappointed, seems like all they serve is breakfast. *Sigh* There goes a lot of options...so we change our stomachs up and happily decide on breakfast. Oh! And, he got an ice tea...I was either going to get some fresh squeezed OJ, or a milkshake afterwards... (I don't like to mix dairy and citrus) So i opt for the milkshake. Waitress comes over and we give her our food orders, and off she goes. Moments later we see her walk by with two delicious looking sandwiches and a burger...man! I didn't even know they had that!! So there goes one star, looks like they do have lunch, we just didn't seem to get the menu?? Then later on after our meals I inquire about a milkshake to go... well she tells me the menu lies, and they don't even have ice cream. MAN! That stinks!...**on my way to the restroom I saw a large ice cream container empty...so I guess they do normally have milk shakes, just not now. Okay, so thats the bad, heres the good. THE FOOD WAS AWESOME. They cooked my eggs JUST how I like them, which no one ever seems to understand. Fried, over-easy, but crispy on the edges. The bacon too! Came nice and crispy without even asking, I loved it, some people might now. The hash browns too!! Oh, now I know where to get that meal just how I want it! It was the #16 so it came with biscuits and gravy... was also very happy to see the bring the gravy on the side.Boyfriend got the chicken fried chicken, it was yummy, and moist, yet crispy (like much of their food!) So there you have it! Oh, the inside was lovely, and clean, not like the outside at all.

Having lived in Sacramento mid-town for many years before moving to Long Beach... Lucky's is somewhere we always go when we're in town. Over Christmas, my husband and I took my parents here for breakfast. Like someone mentioned before, they tend to undercook the toast. But, I am sure if you ask for it dark...they would oblige. Everything else we had was just as good as I remembered it. It's funny when you move away from a place like this....you truly miss it. One thing that Lucky does well is seasoned breakfast potatoes. They are thin and sauteed with peppers and onions...then you add the pepper plant sauce on them... YUM! Being the queen of starch, I've sampled many a breakfast tater. These are the best yet. So, if you love to get your carb on - may I recommend a side of seasoned potatoes, a small stack of pancakes and some toast. They can roll you out when you're done ;)

As a longtime downtown resident, I've patronized every nook and cranny of midtown, including maaaany trips to Lucky Cafe on busy weekend mornings. It used to be, you'd be lucky to get a seat without waiting half an hour, as the locals would pack in this tiny joint like so many sardines. On a recent Sunday morning breakfast trip downtown, my uncle and I popped into Lucky Cafe, and were shocked to find the place almost deserted. Clearly, there's been a management change, as the girls who used to run this local breakfast dive have been replaced by a unlikely-looking pack of guys. That said, the same good service, great sausage, fluffy pancakes, and killer condiments remain. By all appearances, the new management hadn't changed a thing, and my breakfast was awesome. The only difference I could see was in attendance.

My last review is glowing! This is less than happy... The food was so-so this last time and the service was just atrocious... Who knew that one girl was unable to handle more than 3 tables at a time?!? No drinks until half way through the meal, cold food when we did finally receive it and she never checked in with us. Twice I had to ask a different server to help us because she was no where to be seen. This place was good once before and I'm sure it could be good again but, when in Sacramento again, I will go elsewhere... Perhaps McDonald's, they seem to have better customer service and quicker response time...

You wake up, your head hurts, and you inner dialogue is describing your current state..."dear god, I'm jacked up"...and the only thing that will cure you is a greasy breakfast. This is where Lucky comes in. Corned beef, pancakes and bacon take you from hangover land to looking at last night's photos with a smile in no time. So I've heard anyway.

"Classic greasy-spoon diner," you say? More like a classic example of unmet potential. I do respect that this place might be one of a mere handful of restaurants in the grid that have not snapped into the conformity of sponge-painted walls with plasma screens and polished bare cement floors. But I don't think that has anything to do with scrupulous trend-resistance or strict traditionalism. The owner/operator here is just lazy and a small thinker. I eat there about once a year just to take Lucky's pulse and see if any invigoratin' has happened. For the last seven or eight years or so...NOPE! The food is passable sometimes, but never great and absolutely pizzazzless. And sometimes the food's just plain bad, like when breakfast comes overcooked, dry, and lukewarm. When my folks dragged me to a Hometown Buffet for breakfast, I was actually reminded of Lucky's Diner. Really, though, even if the food were to remain subpar to mediocre and the prices still relatively high, I'd say that Lucky's would be useful if only it would stay open late. In this particularly busy corner of the nightclub district, why would you lock up every afternoon? (Also, if only they were open late, we might get to enjoy a little splash of neon on their cool old sign.)

I love the Lucky. My fav is the chicken apple sausage, however, I just love the variety of unusual carnivorous choices. The coffee leaves something to be desired, unless you are not a mud drinker, I suppose. Hashbrowns are fabulous. Overall the best Saturday/ Sunday breakfast when I remember to make it there when it is open.

This place rules! Super friendly service here, and the atmosphere is perfect. The place looks like it hasn't been touched since the 60's, with the exception of some bad posters, which is right up my alley. There aren't a lot of old-fashioned diner-ish breakfast places in midtown, so I really appreciate the lack of remodeling. The chorizo and eggs are great!

It's close to my work. It's kinda hard to fuck up scrambled eggs and toast. Coffee sucks but it's a dumpy diner. I don't like minimum charges on credit cards. Either accept em or don't but don't make me pay more for the experience cause I gotta get my bill up to $10 bucks. And it's close to my work.

Great service! The waitress who normally serves me is awesome. I've only had breakfast here, but the food is pretty good. The home style potatoes are yummy! Maybe a little over priced for what you get though.

If you love hash browns - not home fries or diced potatos but actual hash browns - lucky cafe is your place. I have not found any as good since my waffle house days in the south. The waffle with bacon inside - all I can say is yum!

GREAT food! GREAT service!!!! Waffles...pancakes...omelettes and huge yummy sausage! This was an awesome breakfast for the family! Super friendly waitress (I wish I could remember her name). We had breakfast on a saturday morning around 7:30 am. No wait...quick service and completely kid friendly @ the counter. One of our new faves! Will be back next weekend...

This is my favorite breakfast place in town. Got a great sausage and egg combo and their hash browns are the best. I am not a big potato lover so I take this place over Corner Stone. The service has always been very good, but I would avoid the real busy periods because the service slows down considerably. I am not sure who runs the place now, but over the years Mrs Lee, her husband, and their son was there all the time. It has that 1930's atmosphere as does the bath room back near or in the kitchen and the upholstery could use a few stitches, duct tape, and more springs, but the food is what sets this place apart.

Have gone here for years, and NEVER had a bad breakfast OR experience. However! Today was maddening! got there at 10:00am, it was very hot inside. We didn't get menus right away, but the dishwasher brought us water. We were never asked if we wanted coffee or anything else to drink. We finally got our order in, because I kept speaking out loud about how we needed to order. The table next to us also did not get their order in timely. We sat for 1 HOUR and got a cold plate of toast, no food, and still NOTHING ELSE TO DRINK!! There was a couple who came in 10 minutes after us and were halfway done eating as we were walking out, FURIOUS and hungry. When we were getting up to leave, we asked when they were planning on serving us; we were informed there were two tickets ahead of ours!!! WTF???!!!! the table next to us, who also didn't get their order in timely was getting their food in batches. Toast......then some condiments.....then another plate of toast; then lame apologies...IT SUCKED BIG TIME!! we didn't even get an I'm sorry...just a shoulder shrug like we were starting trouble.

Lucky Café is one of the best breakfast places in Midtown Sacramento. Their no frills breakfast is reasonably priced and portioned big enough for two people. They have an extensive menu of good old fashion American breakfast food. My experience this morning was great as always! The atmosphere is very low key and most defiantly a "diner" attitude!

Best pancakes in town. When we first moved here we were going to try every breakfast place in town...just because. Well we went to Cornerstone and thought it was ok then tried Lucky and can't seem to go anywhere else! Nice thicker slices of bacon...eggs done the way you want (no runny white yay) and OMG pancakes! i did have the fried chicken and gravy breakfast once, so good but I don't exercise enough to get away with that too often. Staff is always terrific. Atmosphere seems like it hasn't changed in ages and I like that!

Expensive as hell. I'm not sure why it's so expensive, you do get a lot of food, but after it's all said and done my husband, kid and I had spent like $40 on breakfast, and that's not even ordering booze! Just seems like a lot. Maybe I'm cheap... someone tell me if I'm cheap. I love the hash browns here, and we always have good service. My kid had a pancake and he got enough butter for 6, and it was nothing special as far as pancakes go. I guess that's how'd I describe the entire meal, it was just ok, except the hash browns, they're so good. I had eggs and sausage, and my husband had country fried steak. His steak was big enough to feed all of us. My eggs were cooked right and it was just sort of forgetable... But damn those hash browns, mmmm... In summary, If I'm craving hash browns I'll pay the $40 for breakfast. Otherwise, I'll probably go elsewhere, because the rest of the food to me, is just ok.

so dumb. greasy spoon breakfast and they will NOT take your debit card even if it has the visa logo to run as credit. they will make you walk to the ATM and get cash to pay your measly bill. they will however serve you a mimosa in a glass that reads "Planned Parenthood". that part was awesome.

The waitress overcharged me!!! and from reading other reviews, im not the only one. When I called to speak with the manager, the waitress answered and claimed he wasnt there...and the food definitely wasnt good enough for me to let that go. i wont be back.

I truly was tricked into trying this place out because I saw so many people eating here. We decided to wait and once we were seated, we ordered. Everything was okay until we had time to start looking around. The women's restroom was under-repair and we had to use the men's, which would be fine if they at least had seat covers. The containers and shakers on our table were sticky and crusty around the edges, the art work at the tables were covered with food, grease, and fingerprint stains and to add icing on the cake, the cook was grilling with his long hair DOWN- gross! After a short discussion, we decided to just wait it out. We were starving and just wanted to eat. When the food came...eventually (30 minutes for bacon, eggs and pancakes), it was boring to say the least. The eggs were overcooked, the bacon was dry and fatty and the pancakes were beyond boring. I still question whether they even use buttermilk in their "buttermilk pancakes". The best part of the meal was the toast (served 10 minutes before the rest of my meal)- I wish I was kidding. Considering they specialize in breakfast I was shocked to find out they only had Fat Free milk and it was a policy to not have all kinds of milk on hand, just "whatever gets grabbed off the truck" (a quote from our waitress). I left with a rock in my stomach and less money in my wallet. Unless you have no standards for cleanliness, don't mind finding hair in your food, or using an unsanitary restroom, this is the place for you. However, for the same amount, or even less I'm sure there is a better place for breakfast....that cares more about what it serves to it's guests rather than just tossing poorly cooked, flavorless food on a plate with an overpriced bill next to your stale coffee and container of curdled half and half.

Terrible service from the waitress. We had to hear her phone conversations that shouldn't be happening at work. Food came out very fast, but was AWFUL. My french toast was decent at best. Eggs were slimy and flavorless, but the worst was the sausage. 4 links of disgusting sausage. Absolutely no flavor, just grease. My girlfriend's sunny side up egg was plain undercooked as well. Her hash browns were decent but that's not saying much. I had high hopes but the food was downright awful. I'll stick with ihop over this any day

The fact that I just read all these reviews AFTER I've eaten there twice scares me. They reuse food?? Hmmm....not sure if I believe that one or not. Also, I saw an update in someone's review that said it was now run by someone who didnt do that? Please God say that's true?!! Despite now knowing this fact, I still really loved the food! It was a really good breakfast and a really good price. I love eggs, toast, and hashbrowns on a lazy Sat. or Sun. You also definitely cannot beat the coffee there. I heart a nice steaming cup of black coffee and this place delivers! Now....on to play detective and find out if these rumors are true......

  • Moses H.

I like Mrs. Lee and the food here is perfectly fine. A bit overpriced for diner food, and the service can be horrible (part of that is her aversion to letting anyone but the family ring you up), and usually my order is wrong, but whatever. It's not bad. It's in the neighborhood and if you get there early enough on wknds you don't have to wait, so it's always fine with me. Of course, Market Club has the same food in larger servings, 2/3 the cost and better service ... and not usually more than a 5 minute wait ... but if you live nearby and want to walk to your meal, Lucky is the best diner breakfast in midtown.

WHY DO PEOPLE GO HERE?????? The only time I go is to get emergency potatoes for my hungover girlfriend. While I try to suggest urinal cakes as a preferable alternative, she's adamant. The back room of this place is like a refugee camp in that the white plastic tables are an inch apart and there's nothing adorning the stuccoed walls. I really wanted to be wrapped up in a blanket to complete the experience. This shit excuse for a human that kidnapped my dog used to work there. She told me that they re-use extra syrup left on plates. I see a lot of stupid cool-dudes who probably claim to have exceptional 'against the grain' tastes eating here all the time. C'mon, man -- What Would The Fiery Furnaces Do? Great photo, by the way! I love how the minivan and that you-just-know-it's-piss-soaked fire hydrant are the prominent images.

This place is so-so. It one of the many greasy diners in downtown that serve the usual eggs-bacon-pancakes breakfasts. I would rank it slightly below the Cornerstone, because of smaller portions and poorer quality of food. I'd probably wouldn't go there again unless every place else in town was crowded for weekend breakfast. Even then, I might not.

    (2)
  • Greg B.

Some of the reviews below are weird. How do you recycle unused syrup and ketchup??? The Lucky Cafe has a the typical greasy spoon ambiance. We always head for the booths! The hash browns are excellent because they're slathered perfectly in butter. The french toast is good too. I've never had a bad meal at The Lucky Cafe. The coffee is pretty weak but there's always a waitress ready to fill your cup. I hear some of the patrons steal the sugar packets and don't tip very good.

I give a 1 star because it's too expensive for a breakfast place. I pay about 30 bux for 2 people, for simple eggs or omelet. There's too many other great places to go .

Lucky Cafe - I love this place it defines the idea of greasy spoon diner. It's so much fun just going. The place hasn't been redecorated since I've been going, and I think I asked a waitress, or the owner, once and she said it was good luck not to redecorated. Yes! Old plants with withered leaves, and old tube TV on top of the refrigerator thats annoyingly loud, trashy (and have to admit) kinda sexy waitress. A mexican bus boy that has been there for years; when I first saw him he looked timid with one of those mustaches that looks like it hasn't fully grown in and boy is he determined to keep those tables clean. Fast forward about 4-5 years later helping to take still on top of his game but he's helping to take orders and serving food. Interesting to see the change in him. The seats are old and some table seats have been taped up with masking tape. Other tables you can feel the spring under the seat and the back room well it just kinda sucks! Its awesome!!! Like cheap back yard patio furniture place into a loud room that echos everything. So come Sunday when all the party people with their hangovers and the Sunday morning crowd come flocking its just echoing loud. I love it!! The head cook knows what he's doing! And he know's how to hook up some breakfast! I can tell when they have another cook in the back, the food just taste different. I actually get a little annoyed when the head cook don't make my food. My number one choice - Potato Platter with a side of Raisin Bread and two eggs over medium, then place a generous helping of their pepper plant hot sauce on the potato's and sit back and watch me devour that plate in about 3 minutes. Lucky Cafe is a diamond - the definition of fun greasy spoon breakfast.

This is a great place for breakfast. I always get the house made corned beef hash and eggs. It's soo good I can't even think about ordering anything else. The prices seem reasonable due to the large portions you get, I typically am only able to eat half it's sooo much! Love midtown also, great location for this hidden little nook I often forget about.

  • Greg G.

I am pulling for you, Lucky. You may not have the goods in the cosmetic department, but there is some love put into the food. My 6 year old will eat the whole plate of biscuits and gravy. And I like the hash browns - hangover or not. The omelettes are consistently decent. One suggestion (although this is one other quirks I can't help but love about the place) - toast deserves more than grape and mixed fruit jellies. Eat here if you value the whole experience of weekend breakfast - not just the food. You can spend hours playing "I spy" with all the bizarro trinkets adorning the interior. Another game I like to play is "make the waitress smile."

Coffee tastes nasty and the cups always has someone else's lipstick on it! Yuck! It is just a good place to go to if you are hung over and are not looking at things too closely! I do like the garlic sauce stuff to put on the potatoes. Try Mimi's cafe instead, very clean and good food and a great wait staff!

My BFF took me here for the first time last Saturday morning. She was worried that it would too crowded but we were able to find two seats at the counter at 9:30 am. First off, entering this place is like taking a huge step back in time. It's got quaint old wooden booths and a long counter with tightly spaced stools. Service was a bit spotty at first but picked up about 15 minutes in. My BFF opted for the waffle and eggs with a side of bacon. I begged her to put the bacon in the waffle but she is not a fan. Who doesn't love bacon in waffles??? So, I am definitely going to try that next time. I had the chicken fried chicken breast with a side of gravy, hash browns, egg and toast. Cardiac arrest? Damn near. That chicken was superb, the gravy very tasty and not too thick, and the hash browns were freaking heaven. Just the right ratio of crispy to squishy for my taste. The egg was the only thing I could have done without...I ordered it over easy and it came out a bit watery. Oh well, I was full after the chicken and hash browns any way. Cannot wait to take my hubby here in a few weeks!!!

Lucky Star hits the spot for an awesome diner breakfast. Myself and six friends went here before we hit the road for a long road trip! The atmosphere was your quintessential diner: booths, counter seats, and a little run down ( I like places with character, it means they rely on the food not the atmosphere to sell their product.) Hole in the wall place in downtown Sac. Good ol' Americana, unpretentious, good breakfast! Big Pluses: They are really into sausage, they have tons of varieties The coffee is strong, good, and does not taste like dishwater! But the big winner is this: REAL HALF N HALF! I was so impressed and so happy when I saw them pouring refrigerated real half n half into your own little mini pitcher! They also have Mimosas! Come and support no frills good local business! At a great price, great location, and great portions!

Lucky Cafe is charming, its got a great old-diner feel to it, and its very "cute". But the menu is a bit pricey for some eggs and potatoes in the morning. Added to the fact the coffee sucks and its usually so packed you can't get in. This is usually my 2nd or 3rd breakfast choice in a pinch.

    (3)
  • Heather J.

Good breakfast choice in downtown. Waffles are good, used to be better? Meals dont feel as greasy as they used too. Love sitting at the counter, reading a paper and eating some eggs/bacon/toast/hot cocoa. Good location too!

My favorite greasy spoon. When I lived in Sactown, would always chow down here after a major hangover. Nothing beats the apple smoked bacon and eggs and toast with Pepper Plant Garlic hot sauce and black coffee to cure the pain the next day. I do like the French toast better at Paragary's but hey this is good.

  • Erin M.

This is good basic food. We didn't want to wait for the line at Fox and Goose and didn't feel like walking to DeVere's so we ended up here. It's a cute little diner atmosphere. The addition has plastic tables and chairs which reminds me of a lot of restaurants in Maine. The waitress was extremely nice, which made it really easy to not be mad when she forgot our side of toast. She didn't charge for it and offered to box it for us. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak, which actually didn't come with gravy so he ordered it on the side. I had the pancakes, which I couldn't finish and some really good hash browns and an egg. Everything was cooked just right and felt good on a lazy Sunday morning. I wasn't a huge fan of their coffee but the orange juice was pretty good.

Your classic greasy spoon. Take it as it is. Good breakfast grub that isn't pretentious and won't break the bank. This is family favorite and we kinda like the white plastic furniture!

The Lucky-it's a classic. They have good old fashioned diner food, served up by friendly servers. Sit at the counter and enjoy the midtown culture.

I was really excited to finally eat here, I had heard good things about Lucky Cafe. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype. Perhaps worst of all, it took 45 minutes to get our order. OK, we got there at about noon, but 45 minutes is just too long no matter what time of the day it is. The biscuits and gravy were average at best - semi-stale biscuits and gravy that was just ho-hum. I wasn't impressed at all with the hash browns, either. I also thought the prices were pretty steep. I give it two stars only because my wife and our friends seemed to enjoy their meals. Sure, the old-school, local hangout, whole-in-the wall vibe is cool, but honestly, I've had a better breakfast at Lyon's.

    (2)
  • Glenn M.

The food here is better than average all american diner breakfast food. Really pretty good. My only issue with this place is that for some reason, every time I show up by myself (I live in midtown and like to eat out by myself) i'll sit at the counter for like almost 10 min sometime before anyone so much as offers a menu, even when it's not that busy. Servers will walk by and then disappear and this is when it's not even that busy. I can understand if it's packed and things are hectic, but at 9 in the morning on a saturday when the place isn't all that crazy I'd at least like to be able to get a cup of coffee while I'm waiting. Also on each and every occasion part of what I did order never arrived. Luckily it was just sides, but overall it's like most of the people working there are just punching the clock and just don't care all that much, but that isn't my problem and it's no excuse for lazy service. We've all worked jobs we don't like at some point. I'd rather go to Cornerstone. The same food but less attitude.

  • Nicole H.

I had an amazing breakfast that consisted of homemade cornbeef hash and eggs over-easy. This place really had the look and feel of an old time diner. You know the ones you see in the movies. I sat at the counter where the coffee was fresh and the service was great!

    (4)
  • David L.

A better than average greasy spoon. All the usual fixins like omelets, pancakes, chicken fried steak... you know, typical American breakfast stuff. I like sitting out on the sidewalk so I can eat, smoke, and watch the cars drive by. If you're tired of always going to cornerstone, this is a good alternative. 3.5 stars scrambled into 4.

  • Randy M.

I usually give a place two tries to make sure that it wasn't an off-day. In this case, I had to go back three-times as that I couldn't believe that the food was so bad. Not only is it bad, but it's very very overpriced. I would only recomend this place to a person if they were starving to death, and standing out front. But even then, it would be with a lot of great reluctance. this place should go out of business.

Breakfast all day and the best ham and cheese omelet I've ever had. Tons of great food and staff were so friendly.

    (5)
  • Erinn L.

After glancing through some of the other reviews here I'm a little oooged out because I usually eat all my hash browns...'cuz their good, some of the better around in fact, greasy without being disgusting and crispy without loosing flavor. The seafood omelet is one of those weird things were you know you probably shouldn't like it, but ya' do --- it's like seafood Newburg on eggs. The basic house sausage is super yummy --- slightly spicy and meaty, very rich. Most sausage tastes fake to me, but this stuff is different, like something from a real butcher and not mass produced. I walk by Lucky everyday on my way to work and it never seems to busy, so if you're looking for a no-wait breakfast this is a good option. But what is up with the servers? Seriously? Is it that bad there they've all gotta be drugged to Anna Nicole Smith levels?

    (3)
  • Jon O.

I never had an issue here, good comfy place to come relax and get a great meal.. I guess once I found a few favorites, I stuck with em pretty much, I still think about the delicious HUGE sausage links that I have not seen anywhere else.

  • John P.

hearty meal for an affordable price. i wish there was a place like this down the street from where i live. very eclectic staff and patrons in a low key locale. if i'm back in midtown, i will definitely come again. they also have a counter area like a real diner.

  • Faith C.

I can't help it. I love me some Lucky Cafe. I don't need comfortable seating, or sober waitresses (although, there is one there, I'm sure you all know which one I'm talking about...black hair, forgets things about 0.2 seconds after you request them, doesn't quite like taking down orders...). I just need some good, home-cooked, huge-serving breakfasts after a lazy weekend. And Lucky knows how to give that to me!

  • Chrysti M.

its alright. its your basic family owned, opened odd hours place. i dont know why people think its expensive i mean holy shit your right 5 bucks for french toast, bacon, and sausage is so godamn expensive i may shit my pants while looking at the bill. but its your basic little 'cafe' in midtown. what do you expect? its family owned food is decent, not the best but ive def. had worse. ive never seen an owner there. if anything the last time i went a woman there did 'free coffee' that WAS feshly made. (no they didnt re-use coffee grounds either) i dont much care for has browns.....but when they are reused.....they taste like rubbery, grainy crap. reusing syrup.....they might have a good strainer for getting chunks of food out then. it is what it is. its decent. not the best but its certainly not the worst.

A great greasy spoon breakfast. Don't mess around with anything fancy here. Two eggs, hashbrowns, toast and coffee. The best no nonsense breakfast around. Sit at the bar. Oh, and skip the weekends.

  • Mike T.

This place...oh what happened to you? The food used to be just what you'd expect...decent omelets, great pancakes, hot coffee...tough to mess up. But in recent years, they've done just that. I went there before work last week and had the dryist, most cheeseless ham & cheese omelet ever made. On top of that, the bacon was burned...not well done, burned. When the waiter asked me how my breakfast was I said..."Honestly? Pretty bad" and then explained why. He said that the blame was with the prep cook from last night...that he didn't do his job. Glad that became my problem. Two minutes later he brought me my $22 bill (omelet, bacon, coffee, juice)...I was lucky enough to pay full price without any kind of apology. Due to my own history with the place (used to go there as a kid), I owe it one more chance...but wow, just awful food, awful service...

    (2)
  • Pippi L.

I have heard from good sources (people who have worked here) that they make the servers recycle unused syrup and ketchup, however, I have not confirmed this rumor with empirical evidence. I ate there one time before I knew that so I didn't watch the servers, and it wasn't exciting or anything. It's just not great food, but yeah, I agree with David, if you need to get away from Cornerstone, head here. But you'd get a better meal at Lyon's.

If you want to exerience that old time Diner this is the place to go. The Lucky Cafe is another of those historic places to dine in the Sacramento region. I have been eating at The Lucky Cafe for over 30 years and not much has changed. I like the counter but their booth service is just as good. You can also eat outside. Food is still as good and the service always excellent. Good portions of food and prices are reasonable. Great place for meeting friends, taking the family, or dining alone. Coffee and tea and they also make great milk shakes. Great place for experiencing a different kind of Sunday brunch. Restrooms are clean. Street parking only but it is located at a cross street so plenty of street parking available. Before or after your meal venture across the street to 'Time Tested Books' which is another historic Sacramento icon and the best used book store in the region.
