I've been here twice. The first time I stayed 4 hours because my friend and I were busy talking, eating, and enjoying our conversation. I didn't like that the servers kept staring at us, I'm sure because of how long we've been there, but they weren't even busy so I didn't appreciate the stares. The garlic basil naan was heavenly! The service was mediocre and the server or kitchen forgot my order of roti. The second time I came with a large group. This time the servers confused our order, meaning there were people who ordered dinner and others a la cart, since it was almost everyone's first time we weren't sure what came with what. In the end it was fine because we were there to have a good time. But everyone consistently thought that their naan is wonderful as well as their chicken tikka masala. I had a mango lassie, the flavor was slightly sour, which I like but it could've been colder. The lamb kabobs were tasty. The daal was a bit strange... I don't have a strong like or dislike for it. The appetizer platter was a great choice for us. The veggie momos have a very strong flavor of spices, especially cumin. I found myself dumping the dipping sauces all over them in order to complement the taste. Lastly the servers were very attentive in refilling our waters and checking up on us. But I credit them the garlic basil naan with chicken tikka masala above anything else.

Won't butcher the language by trying to spell everything, but theLamb Tikka Masala dinner plate was incredible. It came with this lentil soup which my daughter loved. Service was very pleasasnt, and the food was prepared very well. Greta prices as well.

Love their lunch buffet. Me an mom were in Sac and craving something a bit different. This had just what we wanted. Loved the lamb curry. Mom didn't like the pakora whereas I loved it. Good customer service. Nice small and intimate space. My kind of lunch/dinner experience. Definitely will be back!

Delicious! The vegetable MoMo appetizers, a steamed dumpling filled with veggies and spices, are a must (plus they're healthier than all the deep fried alternatives). Great Nepali/Indian food for a great price!

I love this place. Ignore its location. The food makes your forget where you are and takes you to Nepal. The service is good. I even sometimes get it to go...I usually get a plate that has a variety of things, I think four different items. A must try.

One of the better Indian restaurants around Sacramento. It's not really _just_ Nepalese food. Lots of Punjabi and South Indian dishes, too. Not in the nicest part of town, but the food is OK.

I went to Kathmandu before the fire and it kind of blew my mind. It was really good. Totally loved the appetizer platters with all of the dipping sauces. The fried shrimp were insane. But I took my dad there a couple of months ago and it left me wanting more. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't really great. My lamb in red chile sauce was good but seemed like the flavor profile wasn't as well developed as I was expecting it to be- a little flat. And the starter platter had taken a dip as well. Shrimp: eh. The chick pea fritters that used to be so good were mediocre. What's up, Kathmandu??

I had heard about this restaurant several times and decided to check it out. Went on a Tuesday evening and our party was the only one there...this was not a good sign. After placing our order we waited for our food, our waiter, a Nepali looking male entertained us with stories of his life back home. We got the appitizer plater, the potatoe battered things were old, it smelt bad (old) and the samosa had been refried. This is pretty typical of most stingy indian restaurants. When the entree ome out, it was served in a plastic silver looking dish, something to the equivelent of what you would get in a hospital....where were the REAL plates? The food was nothing like the waiter described. The food was definately not freshly made and was over-priced. It is a shame to even call the food here Indian....utterly disgusting. The only good thing I can say is that the waiter was very friendly and helpful.

I'm a fan of Chicken Tikka Masala and was looking forward to having that for dinner last night. I heard that this place was good and had decent prices. I would have to disagree with both. I thought it was overpriced and the dish wasn't horrible, but I've had better! The service....well, the ladies were nice but couldn't remember who ordered what. They even got our bills mixed up and had to remove an item off my bill and add to the other person at the table. Would I come back to this restaurant? Most likely not, I'd rather go back to the restaurants which have tastier food.

I'm surprised this restaurant is receiving such high ratings. My husband and I were seated by the waiter and I immediately noticed how disgustingly filthy the tablecloth was. Red tomato type sauce all over it. Gross. We got up and moved to the next table. Unfortunately, when we sat down, I noticed this tablecloth was also dirty and stained. At that point, I began to look around and noticed that all the tablecloths in the place were dirty. It was a Sunday afternoon, so I'm assuming they just left the tablecloths on from Saturday night. This is not acceptable for any dining spot, fast food or sit-down. The waiter came back with our menus and I tried to get past the filth. No surprise, the menu had old food caked all over it. I began to think that if this is how they maintain their outer appearance, what the hell does the kitchen look like?!?! I was hoping the food would be the saving grace but I was wrong. I ordered a vegetarian makhni dish with basmati rice. The food did not taste fresh and was mediocre at best. The basmati rice was dried and shriveled and was clearly a reheat. Nice. This place might be okay if you're not familiar with Indian food, but if you are a foodie like myself you will no doubt be disappointed. Perhaps this place is a better on a Saturday night when they don't just serve you yesterday's leftovers.

Loved this place. I brought some out of town guests and we all enjoyed it very much. We had a dinner and all our dishes were wonderful. The waiter was a lso a joy. Go here!

Definitely my favorite Indian place in Sacramento and Davis. The Tikka Masala is amazing. I recently discovered that you can get it with vegetables which I especially like cuz it makes me feel like I am being healthy! I like the food here better than Bombay, however the atmosphere could use a little pick me up.

I went here for lunch and had the buffet. The buffet had a nice variety of dishes including meat and vegetarian options. I mainly liked everything I tasted but nothing blew me away. Honestly, I've had better Indian buffets before but for a quick meal I'll definitely go back here.

I love Indian food, and I wanted to love this place. It's close to my house, a downtown business (well, almost), which I like to support....but it was just so, so bad. We tried a variety of dishes, both veggie and not, and I found everything to be disappointing. Some of the dishes were served lukewarm at best. It was also overpriced for what you get, and the whole place seemed dirty and in disrepair. I had to take my child into the restroom and it was utterly disgusting. Yuck. Normally I'd give a place a second chace, but this was so bad that I'll never go back. Kaveri is a much better choice -- worth the drive.

So the first time I tried it, I was not impressed. We went in for dinner and ordered lamb which tasted not so fresh, lamb gets this taste to it if it has been frozen too long or if it is just plain old meat. I was extremely turned off by the place. The inside of the restaurant was clean and comfortable. The second time I went there, there was a sign on the door that said the health department had temporarily closed the joint for repeat violations!!!YUK!!! When the health department has to go as far as actually closing the place down then there really must of been some unsanitary shit going on because they give you a few chances to redeem yourself before they actually close you down. So while I was in DAVIS the other day and saw a Kathmandu Kitchen there and hesitantly thought I would give it one last go. I was really pleased with the Davis location. Different owners may explain the higher quality of food. I highly recommend trying the Davis store rather than Sacramento, it is worth the extra 15 minute drive.

One of my favorite places on Broadway to eat. Very reasonable prices, and friendly services. I highly recommend their chow mein and the Chicken Tiki Masala.

you know the food is good when... the first thing you do when you get home is shower.. hahaha... food was delicious. my friend recommended this place after reading about it on yelp. we tried quite a few dishes and everything was surprisingly good, different, and tasteful. highly recommended if you're looking for something that's strong in flavor. Why? Celebration for Mike and Socheath's Birthday

ok this place serves great Indian food...been several times and I always order the Samosas, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Tiki Marsala, which is chunks of white chicken meat in a red curry yogurt sauce...which is great for dipping your garlic or plain naan into! The rice is flavorful and not all sticky...I do believe its basmati rice! I dont know if I spelled that right but eff it!!! Good food and it wont break the piggy bank!

  • Elijah F.

This place is great. I would kill for their vegetable korma. Their varieties of Naan are also very nice. The service is lacking only from time to time so I tend to get the take-out but that's my only complaint and again, sometimes the service is GREAT, sometimes it is a bit slow. Go here and enjoy!

I spent over a month in Nepal eating traditional Nepali food the entire time. I have to say, Kathmandu is excellent. While most people are saying that it is good Indian food, I can say that is it excellent Nepali food, hence the name of the restaurant, Kathmandu, not Delhi. The momos (a traditonal Tibetan dish) are very good. Although I wish they would make fried momo's in addition to steamed momos. The vegetarian sampler is a good first dish for someone who wants to try the food but doesn't want to eat just one taste. All my non-vegetarian friends like this dish. Service can be slow at times, but the meal makes it worth it. I find myself craving this place often. I have been to another Nepali restaurant in Berkeley, and I have to say that this place is better!

  • Kris G.

For good Indian food at an excellent price, you can't beat this place. Living around the corner, I was devastated when they closed because of a fire last year. The inside of the restaurant is on the shabby side, but this is to be expected of restaurants along this section of Broadway. I've only been to a few Indian places around town, but so far, this is the best. For a good, casual dinner out with friends, Kathmandu fits the bill.

I went to this restaurant about a week ago while my boyfriend and I were visiting some family in town. I don't know if I've just been spoiled by the Indian Food in SF but this place was awful in comparison. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, which is a pretty standard dish, nice and easy. What came out was something between chicken tikka masala and Spaghetti O's. This seriously tasted like Chef Boyardee does indian. The sauce tasted like it contained ketchup and was the worst part. The chicken itself was done well and I ended up scraping off the sauce and having the chicken pieces over rice as that was all that was edible. My boyfriend had chicken in curry I believe and that was done a lot better, in fact though I didn't think his dish was great it was still better than my ketchup chicken masala. Anyway I wouldn't recommend this place, and if you do go, don't order the chicken tikka masala.

Holy crap. This is quite possibly the best Indian food I've ever had. I had the chicken makhani set to spicy and I was dying of pleasure the whole way through. My date had the paneer tika masala. The thali plate, as opposed to a la carte, comes with basmati rice, naan, dal, some vegetable curry, and some cold curry potato salad. Awesome. I had chai to drink and rice pudding for dessert.

This place has been in business for a loooong time. I think the ownership may have changed over the years. I originally went to this place 7 years ago as a less experienced Indian food eater(its now my favorite) and thought it was gross. I was told that the food wasn't very good anyway and was a bad place to pop my Indian food cherry. I went there with some friends a couple weeks ago for their buffet and LOVED IT. I was encouraged to try the mango lassi drink with the waiters high confidence that I would approve but unfortunately I did not. YUM! Very good, can't wait to go again.

Very good Restaurant. My favorite thing was the Nepala Samosas with the dipping sauces. The naan was very good. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The service was excellent.

I do not know much about Indian and Nepal cuisine. However, I tried this one, and it is pretty good. The mango lassi is very mango... recommend. The chicken and curry are very good too... but the lamb, really tastes like lamb...

i love love love the buffet and the creamy red chicken (cant remember the actual name!) dish. oh so tasty. and the service and prices are always good. plus ive never gotten sick from their food ( i cant say the same about all indian food restaraunts)..!

  • cynthia l.

Decent Price for the quality and quantity of food. Tried Tandoori Chicken (which was served on a hot sizzling plate), Lamb Kabob (on sizzling plate too. Good flavorings, but could be better), Mushroom Shrimp (we couldn't find any mushrooms in the curry) and Fresh Veggies in Nepalese way. We ordered a-la-carte for the non-sizzling dishes. came with nan, rice and curry veggies. the sizzling plates came with rice and nan. very much enough for 4 of us that night.

I only came here because I bought a groupon for this place. The groupon was good for dinner and it was for 2 entree and an appetizer for $18.50. Before I ordered I asked what the groupon is good for in case they had restrictions for menu items since I noticed there were some restrictions listed on the groupon itself, just wanted to make sure there were no more. When I asked the waitress told me they dont take any groupons. I was surprised since this has never happened before and the groupon itself didnt expire until October. I told her I wanted to talk to the manager and she pointed me in his direction and I asked if he could just come to the table and explain it. He ended up giving me a buy one entree get one free deal instead of the groupon but his story was one of the mangers called groupons drunk and set up the deal so now they are not allowing the groupon to be valid. I personally don't believe the story especially since they list restrictions on the groupon for certain items. Now they told me to contact groupon and ask fora refund, I hope groupon actually refunds me or else I will kathmandu even less for shady business practices. Onward to the food, I ordered the Lal Maas since I've never had it before and i did it with the dinner meal that came with rice, naan, side of veggie and some bean stuff. The portions for the side of curry veggie was absolutely tiny and I couldn't taste much curry on it. The naan was super disappointing since it wasn't hot when I received it and it was too doughy for my test. The mild lal maas which was a lamb dish was okay. It wasnt awful but it also wasn't spectacular. Service: aside from the mishap in the beginning concerning groupon everyone seemed to be very nice, someone asked if we wanted more rice or naan when they noticed we were out and they refilled out waters. The manager came back later and checked in with us to see how we were doing. I asked for container to go since I had leftover lal maas which is lamb in a sauce and they gave me a normal box container which unfortunately spilled so I lost quite a bit of the sauce when I was transporting it home. I would recommend them to give their customers who have saucy dishes to go soup containers to avoid this. Also I didn't want to put my naan with my lamb because I didnt want it to get soggy so I placed it on top of my to go box expecting someone to come by and offer another bag, napkin or something for my naan and nothing. I ended up just asking for a bag later to put all my stuff into. Overall, the food isn't that great considering my dinner cost close to $18 for small portions of mediocre food. I am very turned off by this restaurant due to the entire groupon ordeal and I probably wouldn't be back which is a shame since I liked the kathmandu kitchen in davis.

The food is ok ...not as good as the Davis restaurant. BUT I was appalled by the treatment from our nit wit server. They clearly had a coupon in the card section of the Entertainment Book but when I included the Entertainment card with my credit card the server came back and Rudely asked what the card was? I was very embarrassed and clearly her English comprehension skills were just not at a level to explain. I did not get the discount and I will not be going back. Either my server was uninformed or they are not honoring their coupon.

We had dinner here at about 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. The service was a bit slow, but that's because there was only one server attending to everyone. Nevertheless, the wait was well worth it. Wife ordered delicious lentil soup, whih was super spicy but hit the spot. We ordered chicken dumplings and gobbled those down. Then, we had a Chicken TIkka Massala. Delicious. The place got super crowded, which testifies to the restaurant's good food and service. We'll be back.

I was feeling Indian food so giving this place a try. Came in on a Friday night. It wasn't as busy at the moment. Thought we'll be in and out of there in less than hour. The restaurant has about 2 or maybe 3 other table. We were seated and weren't given the menu right away. I was like awesome...this was off to a great start. After a couple of minutes we were given the menu. A minute later the water came. The lady spilled water on the table and left. Didn't wipe it down or anything. Just left. I was like ok. Now, more people coming in and it seems like they weren't prepare for more people. We waited 5-10 minutes to get order in. At this point I was hoping the food would make up for the mediocre service. In 10-15 minutes, our food came. I ordered the chicken vindaloo dish. It came with rice, dal, nan, chutney, and vegetable curry of the day. The food was good. My experience was ok. Service was not so good, but the food was good so I'm giving it a 3-star due to the service.

Super good and rich food. The plates are a very generous size and taste on point. The service is meh but the food more than makes up for it.

We've been here twice, as my son loves Indian food. The food is delicious, if a little high priced. The service was pretty friendly, but not overly so. But we ordered extra naan twice, first when we ordered our food, and when it was served, and no order of naan came out with it. Two of us had full meals, so we shared our naan with the ala carte folks. We never received the naan, nor were we asked if everything was to our liking during the meal, when we could have had a third shot at getting our extra naan. We weren't charged for it, but it was disappointing to ask twice and be ignored twice. This would be a 4-5 star review otherwise, because the food was excellent. I guess we'll have to try harder to order more naan next time!

I like this place, and I've had Indian food in India many times as a point of comparison. The ambiance is nice, not too stuffy, the paneer chili dish was delicious.and the chicken tikka masala was among the best I've had. I would say their palak paneer dish was average, but it was good. They also had a nice parking area on the side, which was very convenient. Great food, and my wife and I will go back for sure.

I could probably eat Indian food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the rest of my life and never tire of it. That being said, I've tried almost every Indian restaurant in the greater Sacramento region (that's a lot of heartburn and curry stains...) and I must say that this place makes my top 3. First of all, the service was outstanding. We went for dinner with a Groupon, and the place was pretty packed. I'm usually prepared for the wait staff to be annoyed with Groupons, but our waitress was really sweet and patient with us as we asked her 6,000 times if we had reached our minimum tab yet. She gave us her recommendations for food and drinks and didn't make us feel rushed at all. The food came out quickly and in waves, so at all times I was stuffing my face with something new and warm. Everything tasted fresh, spiced to our liking, and the portions were large. I left feeling full - pleasantly full, not ticking time-bomb full. Also had a good amount of leftovers... didn't even know those things existed. Curry up and try this place if you haven't already!

So, I will say...im impressed. There has been an amazing change with the service offered here in the last few months. I'm bumping this review up a star just because i've been here 3 more times since my crappy experience with horrid service...and man, they have changed it up. server and waitress are both very attentive and pleasant. What a change!

Great food! This is our local Indian restaurant so I have eaten here a few times and the food is really good. HOWEVER, the one star is because the service is ridiculously bad. Only go here if you are in a patient mood. Last night I got the coconut curry shrimp. Yum. However the woman working last night Saturday September 27th 2014 hated her job so much I wonder if she hung herself after work last night. Like I said we have been her numerous times so this is not the first bad service we have experienced here. Be ready to get your own napkins, you'll have to hunt down someone if you need something etc.

So...if you're ever in the mood for Himalayan/Indian cuisine this is the place to go...located on Broadway Kathmandu Kitchen is quaint with an inviting atmosphere. The service is always excellent, they're not overly pushy & they let you enjoy your meal and your company without unnecessary interruptions. I've been here several times for the lunch buffet & dinner...the food is always served with a special touch of love...simply yumminess to your taste buds & tummy...the taste & flavors tantalize you and makes you yearn for more. Try some of my favs like the Himalayan appetizer...basil/garlic naans...vegan thali...paneer pakora...& vegetable biryani...these are just a few items everything on the menu is GREAT! I hope this sums it up enough to invite you to go visit...HAPPY EATING

Usually I'm all about the food. If the food was good I can tolerate quite a bit. That said, the food was alright. The service was ridiculously bad, like sitting us where someone else was already sitting, no eye contact, no smiles. No rice for the first 5 minutes, even then our naan bread came for desert, never asked if we wanted a drink etc. just couldn't be worse. And then the food was just ok. At least I had time to write this review while waiting to pay.

Food was fantastic, and the service was friendly, prompt, and attentive. (This is in stark contrast to the poor treatment and hassles we consistently received at Kaveri Madras, an Indian restaurant on Fulton Ave., where we've stopped going). We tried the lamb tikka masala and chicken tikka masala thali dinners, one medium heat and one spicy, and the sauce was excellent. Moderate selection of cocktails and bottled beers, including a few from Nepal. Didn't notice any beers on tap. Visited on a Saturday evening- full crowd, but no wait. Subtracted one star because the dining room is a bit crowded with tables, so a little noisy and tight to navigate when full. Very satisfied and will definitely be returning.

The food is ok here. The reason I am leaving a negative review is do to the horrible service. They are understaffed and take for ever to do everything. I had to stand and get their attention to pay them.

What is up with the hostile female server. Never a smile or friendly smile. I have been to this restaurant 3 times for weekend buffet and after each experience we surmised the same conclusion. Foods O.K. but maybe its a cultural thing. After 3 visits, I can say its the server and not the culture.

The food was pretty awesome, though my girlfriend's dish was a bit salty. The Himalayan sampler plate was really good and so was the Prawn Masala. The service though, was atrocious. We were asked to sit and wait which wasn't for long but the hostess walked over and just stared at us until we said we were waiting to be seated. Once we got seated she handed us the menus and then left. For a long time. Food came fast after we ordered but we could've been in and out in half the time. When we asked for to go boxes we received one. What the heck? Even as I am writing this, she still hasn't brought us our check and there are currently no other people in here. Some guy just walked in and is already ordering food with the waitress. Still no check in sight. Probably won't come back anytime soon until they improve their service. We arrived at about 8, were done eating by 8:30 and its currently 8:50 and I'm getting more annoyed by the minute. And it just arrived, 8:52. TLDR; Food, excellent. Service, terrible. Took her 3 mi yes to take my card and charge me though. Nice.

Our local nepalese place went out of business and i was surfing groupon and decided i really wanted momos. So off we went. In a cool part of Sac lots of Asian/ Ethnic places to choose from. Beautiful painting of the Himalayas on the wall. The staff was 50/50 on the friendly. The host seemed very welcoming our waitress not so much. Soda is from a can? Odd They have Mustang lager which is a light and refreshing Nepalese beer. The food was delish. The hot sauce for the momos was hot or my tolerance has gone down significantly. I was drinking everyones water at the table. Aloo Muttar was fabulous one of my favorite dishes. I would definitely go back again.

My wife and I recently visited Kathmandu Kitchen and were quite disappointed overall. We have been here a couple times before and remember it being only average, but it seems like the service and food has gone downhill. From the moment we walked in we were disappointed. We said hello to an approaching waitress as we were waiting to be seated, who then proceeded to ignore us and chat up some people at a table in the front, leaving us standing there another couple of minutes. When we were finally seated, we ordered vegetable somosas for our appetizer, in addition to Veggie Momos and Alu Kauli Ko Tarkari (potatoes and cauliflower curry), Thali style for our entrees. The veggie somosa were just ok I would say, and didn't have much spice or flavor. The Momos my wife ordered came out next but my entre was nowhere to be seen. We usually like to eat together so this was a bit odd. Also, not only were some of her momos broken open, but they were not very well presented (dipping sauces thrown ontop like in a take out tray) and they had too much vinager for her liking. My dish was average I would say, and the naan was good, but the portion of rice and curry could have been larger, so I would probably recommend getting this a la carte, especially if you're like me and are not a fan if the pickled cucumber chutney that comes when you order it Thali style. It seemed like we didn't have one waitress per se, as we had at least two, and both were helpful and pleasant I would say. Both disappeared however when we wanted to pay our bill. We saw the manager hovering around the back of the room and managed to flag him down finally, but after he ran my credit card I watched him deliver it absentmindedly to another couples' table. They looked at it and were confused but he walked away and didn't even notice his mistake, so I had to walk over and retrieve it. That was weird. We used a Groupon this time so even though the experience was far from memorable, I guess it wasn't a total loss. I agree with Dave M. that this place has definitely gone downhill and may be on its way out. For us it was definately below average and there is already plenty of average Indian food in Sac. IMO. Since it's not conveniently located for us and we know other places in the area we can get both good Indian and Nepali food, I can't imagine us coming back here any time soon.

We came here on my birthday and we had a party of about 12. The size of the place meant that we couldn't get everyone in one long set up, but they otherwise had no issues accommodating us immediately. They had a few more items available compared to another Indian restaurant I had recently visited. The waitress on hand was very attentive and despite the place being fairly busy, she never let our glasses reach empty. They also were very quick to bring us more naan if we had finished what we had. They were quick to remove our empty plates and made sure not to remove our silverware without asking us first. They let us stay as long as we liked and never rushed us at all. Afterward, a gentleman that was either a manager or an owner came by to shake our hands and see if we enjoyed our meal (we did). I'd definitely come back here again.

The lunch buffet is a great deal and they have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I love the spinach paratha made with whole wheat flour, as well as the garlic cilantro naan! For those not partaking in the buffet, the menu is easy to navigate and the meat and dairy free dishes are clearly advertised. The service has been hit or miss every time I come in, but I don't mind if I'm mostly helping myself at the buffet. Definitely recommended for a casual lunch.

Had dinner here when they don't have buffet. The Himalayan appetizer was yummy. Tikki tala masala chicken was yummy too. The naan was very soft, hot and delish. Too bad they don't make the naan combo special like in Davis. Service was not bad. I will be back for the food.

Thank you Restaurant.com for having this establishment to choose from and allowing me to broaden my horizons in the culinary department. This was my second foray into the Indian food arena so I still am not all that familiar with what all the dishes are. Yes, I grabbed a menu to assist me so I could mention specific items! Decided to try them for lunch today. Walk in and there two tables currently occupied so it wasn't all that busy. Apparently they have a buffet so we decided to give it a shot. Looked like a good variety of items to try; lamb, chicken & fish curries, chicken tandoori, a mixed vegetable dish as well as other vegetarian selections, black lentil soup, salad with various sauces next to it, and a few other things. My favorite was the chicken makhani. YUM! Oh wait..no, it was the nan bread!! The basmati rice was rather tasty too. The service was a bit slow but it was Saturday afternoon and we didn't have anything pressing to do. I mean, c'mon, we were doing the buffet and serving ourselves. It was a nice, leisurely dining experience. The gentlemen there were friendly. When the check came, I noticed there was an error in the math. $39.90 as opposed to $30.90. Hmmmm.... they did correct it though. Just seemed a little weird. Then when it actually came time to pay, and I handed them the Restaurant.com paper (yes, it was printed on paper! I don't have a smart phone!!!) one gentleman said "Oh, that doesn't apply for the buffet." I never read anything on it that said anything to that effect. I told him that it just applies to the total of the check, and as long as we spend the required amount, then it should be accepted. They were himming and hawing about not accepting it, but then eventually did. I was paying $15 less whether they were okay with it or not. Then he started telling me about how they never authorized Restaurant.com to list their place on their site, blah, blah, blah. Whatever. Doesn't concern me and that's something y'all need to take up with them. All in all, I would go back. It's only a few miles from where I live and the food was pretty good.

Starting from zero stars, I'll give it two since the food was decent and it might be okay in a buffet setting (you know, where customer service is not as crucial.) Here are my issues: I brought in my groupon and ordered prawn curry and lamb curry, and they (unapologetically) said that the prawn curry was not included in the groupon deal. Umm check the fine print on your latest deal! Instead of showing me an old version with a different exp date and fine print! I'm pissed off that wouldn't even LOOK at my groupon, let alone honor it. Aside from that, the service was downright pathetic. We were the only ones there!! Why did we have to go get someone just to take our order after waiting 10 min, twait 20 min for water, and have to remind you about each beer we ordered? Seriously?! Never again.

This place is great, I usually only order too go because I only get a limited lunch period during my work week. On my last day off of work I had an awesome foodie experience with my girlfriend.. we caught the lunch buffet right before the lunch crowd arrived. The variety of food was awesome for a "Buffet" style arrangement. The best part was the bill, delicious food at around 10$ a person leaving me with a satisfied belly. With the buffet style you get to try new things with out having to pay a huge check. They had great customer service too!! My water glass was never empty. I will be back Kathmandu thank you for the great service and food!!

Wife and I had dinner tonight our first time here. Our experience was great. We enjoyed the food, service was good. The wife is a vegetarian and I am a meat eater lots of choices for the both of us. and we got some food to go for our vegan son

A good meal, just too pricey... I had the chicken tikka masala thali platter, which was pretty tasty, but a little on the expensive side. I really enjoyed the veggie curry and chutney included, but the portions were somewhat uneven at our table. I think I looked over in slight dismay when I realized my co-pilot got all the potatoes in her order. Mine was half the size and with maybe part of a single potato. I liked suggesting it's okay since she is Irish and they were simply trying to accommodate her ethnicity. I hate to sound like a broken record when reviewing Indian restaurants in Sac, BUT since Mati's has opened in Midtown, I see no reason to spend $13-$15 for a plate of indian food when you can generally get the exact same combination of items in equal quality and larger portions for $7-$8 at Mati's. Overall, If you don't mind spending a little more for some friendly table service. I think Kathmandu Kitchen is a decent place for a good sit-down indian meal. If you want more variety, or a meal for half the price. Indian Oven in Natomas has a fantastic buffet, and as always, Mati's is the best bargain hands down for Indian in Sac.

I was drawn in to try Kathmandu by an above average Groupon, which was $20 worth of food for a measly $8. I was excited to get a good deal. To my dismay, the price before discount for my small order of 2 entrees a la carte and 1 order of garlic naan turned out to be $31!! So even with a seemingly great discount, I ended up paying $19 for two little plastic tubs with tikka masala, a paltry amount of basmati rice, and 4 little corners of naan. The food was ok actually. The lamb chunks in the lamb tikka masala was actually quite tender and seared before being baptized in this very orange sauce. The naan was unimpressive, and left me longing for Mati's naan. For $10-11 I can feast on a super Indian buffet in Folsom and try so many varieties of Indian fare. So food ok, but prices not ok.

I love to leave a restaurant smiling. I was happy as a clam after dinner at Kathmandu. They've got the trifecta down - a nice atmosphere, good service and, of course, good food. They're in a cute, bright space to which I will gladly return. Although it was moderately busy, it didn't feel cramped or noisy. It also didn't seem to phase the servers, who were there when we needed them but weren't overbearing. The waterboy was a tad over ambitious, however, I would much rather have frequent fillings than lack of water, especially with spicy food. But who needs water when there's beer. They've got some more familiar names on the list, like Sierra Nevada and Heineken. I wanted to try something new so I opted for the Taj Mahal, a Nepalese beer (Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal - there's a little geography for ya). It was light and went well with the food but didn't really stand up on its own. We both got a thali, which adds a couple or three bucks to the price of each entree but it's always the way to go if you want some variety (versus ordering a la carte). Included in the thali was the vegetable curry of the day, dal, rice, naan, their version of a potato salad and raita. I had the prawn vindaloo and my guy had the chicken tikka masala. Both sauces were delicious and I had plenty of naan for some sneaky tikka masala stealin'. I'm so fast you can't even see me. I felt like they could have kicked it up a notch in flavor to go from good to great but I'm absolutely going to swing a few more times to see if we can't get this up to five stars.

The lunch buffet is pretty awesome. My favorite is the chicken makhani. It seems to always be at the buffet even though they rotate a lot of other dishes. (Thank goodness !) They serve naan at your table if you do the buffet. The paneer and curry chicken are good and they offer some fruit and traditional desserts. It's a great deal for what you get. I often see a lot of coworkers come here during the lunch hour. It's never fully packed but it's never dead either. Try the buffet. You won't regret it.

This is two reviews: Buffet: It is fine. Nothing special, but fine. 3 stars Menu: Very good. They also have Nepalese food, which is pretty solid. The Indian selections are great. Their work with the tandoor is particularly good. 5 stars, though the Indian restaurant that used to be here (10 years ago) was better (6 stars!).

I got a Groupon for this place, which finally got me into this restaurant. I'd been wondering about this place for a while now. I came in for dinner (not the buffet) and to be honest, I expected a lot more, and am not very impressed at all. I ordered our meals Thali, meaning they came with a few extra sides for a few extra dollars... not sure if it was worth it... but worth trying once. The entrees were the Chicken Masala, and another lamb dish with a red-curry and some kind of cherry sauce, both came recommended by the waiter. Service was good, and very polite. The water guy made me laugh every time he came by, as he seemed very eager to please... in a creepy kind of way, I thought it was hilarious. Anyways, when the food came, it was in some sort of weird metal cafeteria style tray (-1 star). Really bad presentation if you ask me. Another negative, and a huge one at that, was their naan. It was over-done to the point of being dry and crispy. Forget the delicious fluffy naan I would think an Indian restaurant would have perfected, theirs was terrible (-1 star). Then lastly, for a very mediocre meal (or less than), the bill came and they seemed to think they served food priced well above mediocre (-1 star). If it wasn't for the Groupon, I'd of been eating Ramen for a few days afterwards. We also ordered a Mango Lassi, and that was delicious I have to say. All in all, if it weren't for the bad naan, which to me is a deal breaker in an Indian restaurant, and they had prices about 1/2 as steep, I might come back, but as is I will not be returning.

Went again and it's getting better with age. Lamb curry was especially good. You could really taste why lamb has a distinct taste against other meats. Kathmandu is some influences from the Asian culture as well since it is the capital of Nepal. Hence you have chau chau (noodle dish). The potato samosas were really good, crisp and favourful. Enjoy

I survived...I tried Indian food for the first time, and I'm still alive. Who knew?! Let's say I had a little trepidation about trying this place, but my friends talked/bullied me into going for lunch, plus I had that Groupon that it seems a LOT of folks had. The three of us split the Kathmandu Special Jumbo Platter appetizer, which had a nice combo of items I could deal with (chicken, shrimp, naan, potstickers) and four different sauces from which to choose. Yummy, though I wimped out on anything hot/spicy. The chicken entree we ordered was yummy, though forgive me that I cannot recall WHICH chicken entree it was. I'll admit; my favorite item was the garlic basil naan. And the plain naan. Sorry y'all! But I wouldn't be averse to trying this place again, or trying Indian food again. As long as I can have naan and chicken, I'll be good :)

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review for this place because I adore this little gem. I'd eat here several times a week if I could. Kathmandu is a small, friendly, nicely decorated restaurant with delicious food and friendly, welcoming staff. It's a great place for a quiet, yummy dinner and happens to be my favorite date-night spot. Also one of my favorite lunch/buffet spots. The fact that they offer the lunch buffet 7 days a week is AWESOME! I've always found the service to be pleasant and attentive, though (like any other place) it can slow down a bit when it gets crowded. It's a small place but it never seems to get too noisy and I've never had to wait very long (if at all) to be seated, even when they're busy. The food is delicious. I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy. It's hard to pick a favorite dish but if I had to choose, the chicken vindaloo might be it. So creamy and spicy! The vegan thali is also great. My only complaint is that the buffet can be a bit sparse if you show up later in the day on the weekend but that isn't enough for me to knock any stars off for this amazing little restaurant that always makes me so full and happy. I'm getting all drooly just thinking about it and I might need to go there right now.

I was kind of jonesing for Nepali food. Wandered into this place the other day, waved away the proffered menu, and asked if they would let me order dal bhat tarkari, takeout. They said sure. Had no idea what I would get (presumably rice, dal, and some kind of vegetable-based curry), didn't even ask the price. While I'm not Nepali, having spent some time in Nepal, a good dal bhat is now a form of comfort food to me. They did me right. Loved all the components (sort of a mini thali), but especially the eggplant and the naan -- so fresh, flavorful, and delicious. Price was very reasonable given that we are not in Kathmandu. Can't wait to go back to try the momos.

I love this place! The food is almost always wonderful, and the ambience keeps getting better and better. The flavor of the food varies with the cooks, and the wine list is a joke (they never have the wine listed ... I'm always asking "OK, what DO YOU HAVE?") But the food is fantastic, and it's well worth dealing with the occasional glitch in consistency. If you like Indian food, GO THERE!

Meh. Ok, positives first. The saffron chicken was superb, the samosa chaat appetizer was delectable. The interior decor is nice and clean. Negatives. We only got ONE samosa for $5.50. Usually you get three. Also, it took about 20 minutes for the appetizer to arrive and 30 minutes after that for the meal to arrive. Yikes. Also, the lamb seekh kebab was dry on the inside and lacked flavor. Overall, it was ok.

This is my FAVORITE restaurant. I've been wanting to review it for years, but I've been holding back because I don't think I can give a totally fair and unbiased review. Here's the thing - I ALWAYS order the exact same thing. What can I say? I'm loyal. Anyway, I can no longer hold back, and will not let my lack of Kathmandu breadth stand in the way of my love for their chicken makhani. I must tell the world. Here's my order, and coincidentally, my favorite meal of all time: the vegetable samosas appetizer, an order of chicken makhani, right between mild and medium on the spice scale, rice, and plain naan. That's it! And it is incredible!! Do it!!!! OK, the samosas. Tasty, crisp to perfection on the outside but soft, warm, and flavored to perfection inside. Just salty enough - they don't need to douse them in salt to make up for any lack of flavor. They come with two sauces. There's a red one. Dun worry bout it. Use the mint chutney (green one). It's incredible. On a few occasions, I've had only the two large veggie samosas with mint chutney for lunch and I've been very satisfied. Now, the chicken makhani (or butter chicken). Unlike that of just about every other Indian place I've tried, the chicken is tandoori chicken, juicy and tender, absorbing the flavor of the sauce beautifully. The sauce itself is creamy, tomato-y, buttery, spicy (if you please!), and incredible. I used to fork a bunch of chicken makhani and rice into the middle of my naan, roll it up, have a couple lulz, and exclaim "Makhani burrito!" I have since developed a more age-appropriate measure of cultural awareness and sensitivity, and now I just create these awesomely-proportioned bites and silently revel in them with some semblance of decorum. I have to admit that for a period of time that spanned maybe 3-4 months (we'll call it the Blue Period), the service was not great. I love the makhani SO much that it more than made up for the sub-par service at the time, but I can understand why previous reviewers have commented on this and been unwilling to return. However, I think the service has improved quite a bit. Their new servers are friendly and quick. At one point, one of the servers brought my party of three an extra samosa for free (the appetizer comes with two samosas). Aside from the food, Kathmandu offers decent cocktails and a small selection of beers and wines. The interior underwent a facelift fairly recently and the ambiance is intimate, modern, and very comfortable. Though I haven't capitalized on it, I hear they deliver, and I often place an order to pick up there (it's always ready and waiting for me, no matter how enthusiastically I drive). All in all, I LOVE this place, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an appreciation for Indian/Nepalese food.

We love Kathmandu Kitchen! We eat here regularly (both take-out and in the restaurant) and are constantly impressed by their delicious dishes! Our favorites are the Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken. We also love their pakoras, samosas, and naan. Compared to other Indian we've had in NorCal this is our favorite spot. Service may be slightly slow sometimes when dining in but it's worth the wait.

My oh my what an awesome place. My boyfriend, daughter and I had the pleasure of taking part in the buffet offered here yesterday; Sunday afternoon. I actually live downtown and have been meaning to come here for awhile as I was put on by coworker who has definitely talked nothing but highly of this place. I am from the Caribbean and being so has made me more apt to appreciate the foreign food palates. However this is not your typical Indian food restaurant it has a the Himalayan and Nepalese twist which makes it so unique and delicious. My family loved everything there. My daughter especially loved the Chana Masala and the naan. Even though she is a picky eater herself, she enjoyed almost everything. My boyfriend and I loved everything there so it is hard to pick a favorite dish. Some of the dishes we especially enjoyed was the curry chicken, curry fish, chana masala, naan, chicken tandoori, chicken kabob and the lamb. The flavors and the spices in the food complement each other perfectly to make a great meal. The food was all fresh and the naan was made fresh and hot at request as well as all the other dishes. The vibe from the restaurant is classy and very welcoming. The severs were very kind, efficient and helpful; hindsight it was not that busy this past Sunday when we went in due to the Superbowl parties going on so I am not sure what the buffet is like on a day such as busy. We all enjoyed our experience and food here. We definitely will be back many times to come for our Indian food fix.

I have been to Kathmandu Kitchen twice, both times with a groupon deal. This is actually a Nepalese restaurant, though they advertise it as Indian. So the curries taste slightly different from authentic Indian ones. Their chicken Biriyani was ok.

Outstanding meal! Lamb korma was to die for. If only we had Indian this good in Houston! Yum! The presentation of the meal was really pretty and different. I enjoyed all of the Indian dishes used to serve the food. One of my favorite meals on this business trip for sure.

I'm going to just make this short and general. Other comments were pretty much said. This place was pretty good for a buffet place. Not much of a selection, nut the food was great. I enjoyed their lamb curry and spinach dish. Their kheer was also good. I made sure I touched on these dishes first because this is what I enjoy when going to an Indian restaurant. They also have Nepalese/ Hymalayan food as well. There are some similarities to Indian food, but slightly different. This place is worth a shot especially, if you are reading this and still contemplating on still coming here or not. ;) I say do it! Hope my comments been helpful. Enjoy!

It's a toss up... tends to be slow service, but delicious food. The bad part is they have false advertising. We have purchased several coupons for them, however they always argue when we try to use them. The first time they told us that we couldn't use it on a holiday even though no where... and I mean no where was it listed on the coupon or on restaurant.com that there was a limitation on what day it was used. As if we didn't learn our lesson the first time, we thought we will try again. So we bought another restaurant.com coupon, and tried to use it. We thought we would call in first, so we didn't ruin our dining experience by having to end it with convincing them they should honor it. The call went a little like "no, no, no, no..." Our favorite thing is the buffet because we can try everything and they first told us that you could only use the coupon after 5pm, to which i responded that it was not listed in the fine print anywhere, so she double checked and then handed the phone to a manager/owner who said we could use it, just not on the buffet. Again, I responded that that stipulations wasn't listed anywhere, he didn't have a good response except that was their rule. I informed him that he need to put it in the fine print so that people would know, as currently it seems a lot like false advertising. So disappointed, now I will have to find another restaurant to satisfy my walking distance cravings.

My favorite Indian restauarant in all of Sacramento. I like getting a la carte because I'd actually eat everything. Their appetizer sampler is huge and filling on its own. I always order their tikka masala. I will be back again and again! Mmm!

Went for buffet, I've been before. Selection was uninteresting. 2 selections (veg) were not being replaced (at 1:30pm), there was a pool of grease at the bottom. Almost no spicing that I could detect. No fruits, one dessert. Staff was plodding and uninterested in my opinion. I used to like this place, oh well. Much better out there.

I tried this place again. The quality has improved from my last review. However, for takeout orders I still do not get enough rice. I''ve adapted. Now, I wait until they have boxed up my order (with rice) and then offer to buy extra rice. The quality of the food is such that I don't mind paying for the extra rice. Also, their lunch buffet is quite good.

Me and my co-worker had their buffet lunch last week and it was really good. It is a small restaurant, and a small buffet, but they had the best chicken (in a red sauce). The price for what you get is excellent! The naan was the best I have had when compared to three other similar restaurants in the area. Highly recommend it.

Kathmandu has become one of my boyfriend and I's favorite places to go out and eat. Full of rich smells, and intricate little decor details from wall hangings to a mural, to friendly staff. That alone makes this place worth a try, but the real reason we love this little place is the food. Before discovering Kathmandu I wasn't a fan of Indian cuisine because I don't much care for spicy foods. I'm pretty sensitive to heat. Everywhere else I've been so far, even if I request it mild, has brought out curries so spicy I can't enjoy it. Not here. What before was just a mouth burning ordeal has become a savory blend of spices and wonderfully creamy sauces with just enough heat to add that extra touch. We absolutely love their Chicken Tika Masala and Lamb Korma. And their Nan is always warm and fluffy. The two of us usually order the above a la carte, and that has always been enough food to fill us up. However they also serve Thali style and have a lunch buffet (till 3 I believe) if you have more of an appetite or want to try a variety of foods.

THE BEST Indian food of any restaurant I have been to. The dishes are all loaded with spices in such beautifully tasteful way that you actually feel the spices through your pours. The food is just epic! They know how to make real authentic food to where all of the dishes are distinct and flavorful. The rice is always moist, and the Tandori chicken comes on a hot griddle with such good flavor. My other favorite is the lamb tikka masala(I think)with the orangey red sauce. Amazing. I like to frequent the buffet that is daily from 11 or 11:30-3. $10 and you get a really great selection of food. Try this place. They also did a really nice remodel last year.

The food is amazing! I can't say that enough. Their Naan is amazing, get it with garlic and even better. The chicken masala is mouthwatering, the lamb is tender and the seafood is quite fresh. However they lost a star on service. They sometimes forget to give you water, or leave you seated for a while without menus.... forget to give you the check on time etc.

This was a good place for indian. I didn't get the tibetan vibe though, except for the awesomely beautiful mural of everest and a tibetan village. The decor is lacking, but this is broadway, right? The mural made up for a good part of this. The food was good, not spectacular and my Aloo Matter tasted a little off. The level of spice was perfect though, just enough to get me heated but not too much to kill my taste buds. Good rice, OK naan. For the price, it wasn't really worth it honestly. I think a dollar or two off each dish would be appropriate, considering the other indian over in midtown, with much better decor, many more staff and obviously higher rent, was the exact same price.

We usually only come here because it's close to our house and we often have a coupon. I'm only reviewing the lunch buffet option. The goods: The quality is usually pretty good and the chana masala is surprisingly spicy (I like). Fresh naan delivered to our table through the meal is also a definite plus. The location is convenient to us and it's kinda cute inside. The bads: I think it's a little over-priced and there aren't too many options--especially vegetarian. The service has never been that great (I know, it's buffet...but they can still check on us to refill water/soda, get us more naan, see if we need the check). Overall: I'd rather eat at Kaveri Madras: Cheaper, huge buffet selection, and great service.

So I had the Groupon and was excited to visit-my first trip last year had been more 4-star with good service and tasty food. This time, not so much. The service was super slow, and the food...well, a piece of my naan had a hair baked onto it, so they comped my naan and chutney side, which is reasonable. My biggest disappointment, though, was that our waitress wasn't very attentive, to the point that, even after I asked her to pick up my check so I could get change to tip her, she didn't come by! When I finally just walked it to the cashier, she said "I got it." And when another server returned my change, my waitress stopped by and TOLD ME HOW TO LEAVE A TIP!!! I was floored! I've been paying tabs and tipping for over a decade, and she's the only server who's ever failed to collect the bill; obviously, the fault lies with me. Unacceptable and I will not be back.

I've been here a few times. The last time was when I used a Groupon that I purchased last summer and never had the time to go and use until the very last minute. When I say last minute, I mean the day before it expired. I got there 30 minutes before they opened and they didn't even complain about my obnoxious self just prancing inside, although I was completely unaware of the time. They let me order my food to go, even though the Groupon was for dine-in only. So nice! A great little family run resturant. By far my favorite thing is the dahl (lentil) soup. Served hot with some naan bread is the greatest simple meal. The chicken mushroom masala I also highly reccomended.

Best Nepalese food I've had anywhere. Packed with spicy and unusual flavors. The chutney selection was outstanding. It was great to go with lots of friends, so I could try many dishes. Everything had a signature style and taste. So yummy we really had to force ourselves to stop eating before we went too far! The service was a bit odd, but friendly. I look forward to coming back next time I'm in Sacto.

Delicious! Service could have been better, but the savory food was what mattered the most at the end. We loved the Chicken Vindaloo (medium), and their Naan bread...perfection! I've had other dishes, but this dish had my favorite, both flavorful, & spicy (if you are not a fan of spicy, order mild). These are a must!

OMG I am so happy that I finally had dinner here! I am still on a vegan streak so I was especially happy to find the Vegan Thali Vegan feast including mismas takari, puri bread, 5 vegetable momos, 2 samosas, steamed rice, and chole. Served with chutney. on the menu. I love lots of different things to try and there were LOTS of goodies on my plate! Each item had a different deliciousness. I am a hot food sissy and that is not a problem here. They made the food mild for me and it wasn't lacking in flavor it just didn't hurt. My friend had the shrimp tandoori and she said that it was wonderful. If you go to their web site you can read the menu and also listen to the Cap Radio story about them. Our food came out quickly even though three other tables sat down when we did. I can't wait to go back.

We had the Himalayan Appetizer, Kitchen Special, and the Lamb Special (forget what the special was called, but it was like BBQ). The appetizers were great! Tasted very freshly made and nice flavors. The Kitchen Special, a lamb dish, with spinach curry on top, was also good. The quality of the lamb from the BBQ special dish tasted much better and the pieces were sizably bigger. Overall, the food was decent, but a little bit pricey! I usually come for the buffet lunch, which is a fairly decent value! So it's nice to know their other food is good too!

Great food, love it every time. Although service is somewhat slow, that's what comes with fresh, quality food.

I've been to both the Broadway & the Davis locations several times. Either one of them are hands down my favorite for date-night dinner with the husband. It's pretty casual inside, but the waiters & waitresses are always so informed about the food. If there's something on the menu you don't recognize- just ask. They'll help you out without making you feel like an idiot for not knowing what's up. We always get the Himalayan appetizer which comes with veggie pakora, samosas, momos & naan and a few different dipping sauces. My fave are always going to be the samosas. What is not to like about mashed potatoes stuffed in pastry & fried? i mean, really. I love the chicken korma & the lamb vindaloo is my husband's favorite, though I'm almost positive that anything we order is going to be incredible. God, now I want to eat there tonight!

Was I the only one misled by the restaurants name? I came in on a whim expecting to get my grub on Himalayan style and was met with...Indian food...Don't get me wrong, I love putting it away with my Punjab bretheren, but if you're going to call your place the Kathmandu Kitchen shouldn't there be some yak on the menu? I'm just sayin... After finally getting over the the linguistical faux pas, I was able to shift gears mentally and get into Indian-mode. Saag Paneer, Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala, Biryani. Now keep in mind there were only two of us at dinner, but who says you can't start the next day off with curry? I was at the edge of my seat in anticipation of the MOUNTAIN of food that was to arrive and then...it didn't. Instead, we got a woefully conservative mole hill. Don't get me wrong, the food was actually decent (what little was delivered that is). I would come back and try the lunch buffet, but the prices they charge for dinner are just a bit on the steep side for what you get.

Another update... This place really has become a favorite. I know Indian Food sometimes gets a bad rap, but it is actually really good. It's the new Thai, so if you aren't eating it, you aren't cool. Heck, my 7 year old even likes this place. He chose if for his birthday dinner, and no, he is not on any sort of psychotropic medications... He just likes it. Best for kids - the Chicken Chau Chau (order it mild) is awesome. It's like a chowmein, but with an Indian flair. That, and some rice and naan, and he's a happy camper. Us adults are fans of the Chicken Vindaloo, the Tikka Masala, and the Chicken Ko Sekuwa. (The latter is good for first-timers... It's dry spiced boneless chicken breast chunks cooked in a tandoori oven. Pretty tame, and really good.) The real reason for the update - we ordered takeout last night. The owner told us 25 minutes. I arrived, and he apologized and said it would be another ten minutes. He offered me a seat at the bar and a complimentary Nepali beer. It was a nice gesture, and the kind of thing that will keep me coming back. I love this place. Try it!

Don't get me wrong. The food is great - probably the best Indian cuisine in Sacramento. But I won't be going back any time soon because of the way we were treated the other night. We took our friends there, and their son has an allergy to food coloring. They didn't realize the restaurant ADDS this to their red curry dishes, so when they received the meal and then asked if they could replace it with something else, the owner denied them saying they'd have to pay for another meal. What restaurant doesn't replace a dish for a food allergy for free? Seems pretty stingy. What restaurant even expects people to ASK if there's food coloring that's been added to a dish?? Gross. To add insult to injury, our server continued to ARGUE with us, saying it's better for them to charge for the extra dish than just replace it (what?? Really??). Too bad for them, they're getting two bad reviews and losing a loyal customer. Wasn't worth it after all. I hope they learn the rewards of better customer service. What a bummer. P.S. - Their website still advertises for a coupon that expired in APRIL.

Had the $20 Groupon and boy am I glad I did! I might never have sampled this place without it (no good reason, just not on my radar). Beyond the drab Broadway storefront, we were delighted to find a nice, quiet, spacious and pretty interior. Our waitstaff were friendly, attentive and helpful. We ordered a Himalayian appetizer sampler, which was ample! It included 4 each: vegetable pakora, samosas, momos and some Naan, artfully layed out on a platter with 4 dipping sauces that almost looked like a kid's paint set - pretty! We also had the vegetable korma (cashew curry) served with daal, naan, chutney, and basmati rice. All was very good, flavorful, and filling. We had leftovers, which were a nice lunch the next day. I'll return.

I cannot say enough good things about Kathmandu. This was Maggie's (girlfriend) choice for date night. I am so glad we decided on this place sure it isn't much to look at on Broadway and you probably drive by it every day thinking it is not a place you would dare eat in but take it from me go there. We ended up here well because Maggie is vegetarian and she likes Indian food. I have been to a few other Indian restaurants around town (not going to post names) and this place is by far the best in service, price, and food. The menu has a ton of variety from veggie to lamb to chicken and seafood too. On our visit I had the Chicken Chau Chau served Thali (full meal with Nan, chutney, rise, and vegetable curry). This dish is sort of like a stir fry but in a Himalayan style. Maggie ordered Malai Kofta which are vegetable croquettes served with homemade cheese in a cream sauce. This dish definitely stood out as a order again type of dish. All I can say is wow! The food here is amazing and the portions enough for two meals. Not lacking in service either our waitress was great. I actually think every restaurant should have staff like her. She helped us with questions, give her opinions on dishes and wine, and checked up to make sure our experience was excellent. I would come back anytime to this place in fact I could eat here more than once a week. So don't let the outside fool you go in and check this place out.

When I first ate here (in January I believe), I thought the food was incredible, but today's visit and food wasn't nearly as good as the Indian food I eat back home in San Fran--but they have good prices, and their buffet can be an average inexpensive meal while traveling.

A few nights ago, my girlfriend and I had a nighttime craving for Indian food and Yelp led us to Kathmandu Kitchen. What a great find near my house! I got the Mango Chicken dinner, which came with curry veggies, basmati rice, naan, and a couple of things I didn't know what they were (I'm an Indian food neophyte). My GF ordered paneer and a garlic naan. There was nothing either of us had that wasn't REALLY good. Fresh and flavorful. The service was outstanding - our server was very friendly and patient with my near-total ignorance of Indian food, despite the fact that we arrived there 20 minutes before closing! We love this place and will no doubt be back whenever that craving strikes again!

Really fantastic food and the atmosphere is friendly. They offer lots of options, from mild to seriously spicy, and have a large vegetarian selection which I love. The service is slow, which makes for a nice relaxed meal experience. I go there whenever I can.

Hands down the best "North" Indian food I have had in California. Service is great, and the Vegan Thali is to die for! Do yourself a favor and patronize this restaurant. Also they have a lunch buffet for $11.

Stellar service. (and not that fake stuff either) We walked in on a gloomy Monday, around lunch time in need of some kick-ass comfort food. Right away, we were greeted by the most gracious host/server/busboy (yes, all in one) and took a seat next to the window. I had read, as I always do, on this really cool review site (rhymes with "Help") that they serve a lunch buffet...Sold! We placed our drink orders, and dug right in. I tried to taste a bit of everything, (which was plenty) so Ill try to keep it short- There were SO many choices (including a salad bar) and the area was kept super clean- even for a lunch rush. Try the Dal soup. Its amazing, and full of lentils, herbs and unique spices. It was probably my favorite thing. I'm never really a huge rice fan, but the basmati was okay. The Chicken Tandoori? To die for - I'm really appreciating the mild use of spice here, since I just cant really take places that feel the need to go crazy with the allspice/curries. The naan was some of the best Ive ever had- not as buttery as Bombay, but much fluffier, and not too dry. Mr L had the Lamb Curry, claiming it to be tender, and seasoned perfectly, in fact, I lost count the number of times he dipped his naan in there (TWSS!) The chau chau wasn't anything to write home about, but I'm not complaining either. I'm not a huge samosa fan, but it was actually quite awesome. I had the veggie, and would probably try it again. I cannot recall the exact name, but I really loved the spinach Saag- kinda spicy, but made a great dipping sauce! There are a few other things I tried to make myself remember the names of, like this veg dish that tasted like a sweet citrus peel of some kind...it was pretty tasty. I know it sounds unbelievable- but that was all in ONE buffet trip! I love variety. The kiddo had the Rus Malai, which is a cheese I thought tasted much like rice pudding- I also suggest the Kheer...amazingness. We washed it all down with a mango lassi, for the wee one (better than Bombay's) a Himalayan ice tea (meh) for me, and chai teas. Hell. Yes. I'm coming back. With a gorgeous atmosphere, great staff and wonderfully priced rockin' food? Sooner than later.

The last few visits have kicked my opinion down a star. The service has been consistently slow and inattentive. The food isn't quite as good as I remember it. The boyf and I came in for dinner when it was over 105 degrees outside, and the air conditioner was broken, so we got out as fast as possible.

AVOID THE BUFFET.... Ate the buffet for lunch today and am still sick at 9:00 the same night. Maybe it would have been better to order from the menu..... People who call this place AMAZING don't know Indian food from Taco Bell.

Indian food, I have missed you so much! It was a randomly stormy summer day today so we headed to Kathmandu Kitchen for some delightfully filling Indian cuisine - what a great choice! I got the vegetarian sampler platter and was so pleased that I like all of the items on the platter as well as the diverse group of sauces. The nan bread was perfectly fluffy/flat. The restaurant had a very open feel and nice decor. My friend and I both felt relaxed by the soothing music. Our servers were sweet, albeit a bit confused about splitting the check. Overall, I would recommend this spot for a nice, filling meal at a place where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the company of someone else.

Just had lunch here recently with a friend (Thanks Friend! ^_^) and it was very yummy. Lots of meats. I've been to other Indian buffets where there is little or no meats, like lots of cauliflower, potatoes, lentils and beans. Well, I like meat and don't cook much meat at home, so it's nice to have as much lamb as I want at one sitting. The lamb curry was quite good, the very red chicken (don't know what it's called) was good, the Chicken Masala was good, and the chicken tandoori was ok, a little dry, but still very good for those who don't like anything spicy. I also had the meatless meatballs (not sure what they were made out of, flour? beans?) which were only so-so. The spices here are very flavorful without being overwhelming. Nothing was too spicy for me and I'm not that good at taking on spicy, as I'm only a mild-to-medium spice girl, haha... I started out with a not-totally-filled plate, but my second plate was loaded with so much meat that my friend asked if I am a meat-eater, oops, blew my cover! =P What else did I have besides all the different kinds of chicken and tons of the lamb and the naan (which was ok, not the best, I've had better naan in SF, but SF Indian food is just unbeatable, it was ok but it wasn't piping hot like I prefer)? I had some of the side dishes too. The basmati rice was fine, I also had 1 chicken dumpling just to try and it tasted like a Chinese chicken dumpling, so I ate the filling (it wasn't that good) and left out the skin, haha, I didn't want to fill up on carbs when the meats were calling out my name. I saw the chicken chow mein but it looks like Chinese chow mein so I skipped that, didn't even know that chow mein is Indian, haha... All those different sauces were so interesting. I can never figure out what is what but I like the green sauce, the white yogurt sauce with the shredded veggies in it, the lentil was pretty good, but I only got a little bit of that. Not sure if there was dessert but I never miss the sweets when there's sooo much good entrees. I ate and ate and ate some more. =D Overall, everything was delicious and I believe it's pretty reasonable for lunch buffet. I don't think I'd order off the menu nor come during dinner as that would just be against my budgetary beliefs, haha... I'm glad I came hungry. =)

I love the Mushroom and Chicken Marsala. A lot of vegetarian options. When we ate there for lunch, the naan was a hit because they couldn't refill fast enough and people kept asking for hit. I would opt in for buffet if it's your first time eating Nepalese/Tibetian food...you have to appreciate and love spices! ps: mango slushie is like a dessert...so you can skip dessert and just order mango slush!

Try to come for the lunch buffet. It's pricey but you're offered a huge selection of entree options, AWESOME biryani, salad, fruit, and naan. You can grab a coupon for their lunch buffet off their website and use it once per visit.

The food is pretty good (lunch buffet) but the service is HORRIBLE. Also they are very inconsistent. Some days I get semi decent service, fresh bread, and even a smile. Other days they basically give me dirty looks, bring me day old reheated bread, and cold tea. They almost never say Thank You even though I say thank you to them. I had been going there almost once a week but after today's bad service and cold bread and tea, I think I will finally give up!!! Oh yeah, they took FOREVER to bring the bill, I gave them a $50 for a $15 dollar bill and then I got $14 in change. I had to go to the desk to point out the massive error. Not easy to do with a whiny toddler waiting for me. OVERALL-- Not worth the aggravation although I did think the food was pretty decent. SIGH. Anyone know of a decent Indian food place that is clean and has decent service in Sac? Please?!

We were afraid that we arrived to close to closing till they opened up for dinner but we were safe. The server asked if we wanted the buffet before being seated but we went with a menu. I ordered the vegan thali. I was happy that it was such a large assortment. The puri bread was unique and very tasty, it had an almost hint of sweetness to it. I was not a real big fan of the samosas, I have had better elsewhere. Everything else was nice and tasty. My boyfriend ordered the chicken makhani or as he calls it 'butter chicken'. He said the portion was decent and it was tasty. We ordered extra puri and he said it was good as well. The service was good and prompt. I wish the naan was vegan!

We went here for Valentines day. We got there about 5 minutes after they opened, and even though the open sign on the door was not lit up, it was already over half full. Popular place. That's a good sign. The smell of spices was not overpowering like many Indian restaurants. I didn't know if that would be a good sign or not. As it turns out, they must just have a very good ventilation system, because the food was perfectly spiced. We started with a Himalayan Appetizer ($6.50 - Sampler platter of Vegetable Pakora, Samosa, and Momos with Naan Breads and Achar (pickle). Serves 2-4 people.) The Pakoras and Samosas were a little too oliy for me. My favorite dish on the platter was definitely the Momos. They were steamed, so not oily obviously, and the flavor was excellent. The older I get, the less I like deep fried food I guess. Both the regular naan (which came with the appetizer platter) and the garlic cilantro naan, which we ordered separately were very good. Some parts were crisp like a cracker, while other parts were thick and pillowy soft. For entrees, we chose one of the specials (which I forgot to write the name down, but it was spiced prawns on top of carmelized onions served on a hot cast iron skillet (almost fajita style) and the coconut curry shrimp. The special was good, but the coconut curry shrimp was INCREDIBLE! I almost wanted to bathe in the sauce, though I'm sure getting the curry out of all my crevices would be quite a chore.

Came here for a quick lunch with one of my best friends. Service was wonderful. I think my water was refilled like 5 times over the course of the meal. Loved it. I used a groupon worth 20 dollars, and for both of us, the meal turned out to be around 19 dollars. SCORE! My friend just paid 4-5 bucks for tax and tip and we were golden. We both decided to go for the lunch buffet. There were about 12 hot options, 10-12 sauces and chutneys, and a couple of options for dessert. If you are a vegetarian, never fear. There were some veggie options also in the buffet, so you could eat to your heart's content as well. Superstars: 1.) Chicken Makhani? - I think it was like tikka masala. Soooo good. Kinda sweet and creamy. I did not like that it had a couple of the chicken bits in it, but beyond those few crunch surprises, nomz. 2.)Veggie Samosa - delish. especially with the tamarind chutney. 3.) Saag Paneer - had a good flavor profile, but if you are looking for super spice, this is not your deal. Alright: 1.) Naan - the table was delivered a hot basket of naan. Usually the naan is my fave, but at this place, it was a little too doughy and almost undercooked. 2.)Mushroom Masala - Good flavor, but did not stand up to the some of the other options we tried. 3.) Lamb Curry/Chicken Curry - Once again, the flavors were just ok, and the pieces of meat were pretty small with big chunks of bone. If I have to work that hard to eat my food, it better be super yummy, not just acceptable. Parking - HORRIBLE... there is very little street parking, and the residential parking is only 1 hour. If we had wanted to eat at a more leisurely pace, this would certainly have been an issue. Overall, it was acceptable for a quick lunch. Pretty cheap and lots of options from which to choose. Probably not a destination spot for me though.

Food decent. I asked manager if they had soap for men's bathroom. She said I was the second customer to ask that and that she would get it. She never did. So every man that came out of that bathroom did not wash hands with soap, probably staff too. And for a buffett too - YUCK. I cannot stand dirty bathrooms and no sense when it comes to basic health issues.

If ur a Indian or a Nepali ... U will hate the momos.. They were super duper disappointing. They were not at all steamy hot and were undercooked . The restaurant manager said "it is what it is , this is the best they can do ". He did admit that they were frozen n not fresh . The service was poor too . The server dint bother to get glasses. My husband had requested for warm water . He got steaming HOT water in a cup . We then poured it in the glass with sons cold water . Realizing later that the glass was not cleaned properly n had food particles . We had asked to change the glass . They never did even after we payed the bill . The naan were good though .

Had a lovely Restaurant.com coupon to use here. I've been here before and enjoyed the food, so thought I'd come back and enjoy even more food at slightly lower prices! Came here with 2 friends. We ordered a bunch of things to share (hands down, best way to eat). Paneer pakora Samosas Lamb dish-thali style Chicken dish Naan Lamb biryani mango lassi Needless to say, us 3 were stuffed to the gills! The samaosa were HUGE, and delicious, we were all fighting for the last piece, until the entrees came out and our mouths dropped "ka-thunk" and apparently we had forgotten how much food we had ordered. We powered through though and gobbled everything up! There was no disappointment whatsoever in these dishes. Each was delicious and we were sad to leave. With the coupon, we each ended up paying less than $10. What a great dinner. I'm so coming back here again. Woooh!

We came in for a lunch buffet on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant appears to have been renovated since a few years ago. We had the lunch buffet. Veggie Chau Chau: Tasted identical to Chinese chow mein, and I really liked it. Saag: Perfectly creamy, salty, spicy, and full of flavor. The only thing I went back for seconds on. Veggie Biryani: Meh. Maybe it is because I never liked biryani to start with, but it was a bit bland for me. Lentil Soup: OMG! It was soooo good! Perfect consistency and flavor. Extremely filling as well! Naan: Brought to the table hot, and fluffy. Just not as charred and chewy as I'm used to. They also had lamb and several types of chicken. My carnivorous bf wasn't too excited about their offerings. Service: A little slow even though we were the only people there. I can see how bad it might get if it was busy and there seemed to be some miscommunication going on as well. Overall: I would come here again, but only if in the area. Otherwise, I would stick to my Kaveri, Mati's, or Pooja depending on which is closer. Also, a bit pricy.

I couldn't decide on whether to give a 2 or 3 star rating, but for the simple fact that I would not recommend this place to anyone I know, I decided a 2 star rating would be the most accurate. It's unfortunate, because my partner and I really like the Kathmandu Kitchen in Davis. But every time we have gone to the Kathmandu Kitchen in Sacramento, I've been underwhelmed and disappointed. Because we like the one in Davis so much, we decided to go to the Sacramento location. The first time we went, it was completely empty on a Friday evening...not a good sign. Any restaurant that's empty during a typical dinner rush is always worrisome! Food and service was mediocre. The last (and final) time we went there, I ordered the prawn masala. I literally jumped up and ran to the bathroom to spit out of the prawns from my mouth into the garbage! It tasted like it was freezer burnt and then overcooked. Completely foul!! Will not be returning.

I am never disappointed when I dine at Kathmandu Kitchen! From the moment you are greeted by the friendly host to the time you leave, you feel welcomed by the staff, who are cordial and helpful, and pay just the right amount of attention. I am currently dealing with a walker, and they always think about the most comfortable place for me, without going overboard. The food is *delicious*, always. I am very partial to their Lamb Platter- a generous portion of perfectly grilled, tender lamb chops with a gorgeous sauce, and the sides with the Thali plate are great. I love their Papadums, mango chutney and Raita, too. Their currys are delicious, and when they ask you for the heat level you want, it is always just right. You can definitely tell that the kitchen uses fresh toasted spices, not packaged blends - the flavors are full and rich, and perfectly balanced. also - as I require a gluten-free diet, they are knowledgeable about what I can and cannot have on their menu.. Fortunately a great number of their dishes are gluten-free! AND they use organic vegetables. Love this place!

They have the most delicious and inspiring veggie samosas. But that's about it, y'all. Even the naan wasn't good last time. What's up with that?! It's a ghost of its former self; I'm very, very sorry to say it.

This place started off great a few years ago when I first tried it. But like all good places the quality goes down hill after awhile. We always get the Navarthan Korma at whatever Indian place we eat at. This one used to be awesome but the last few times we've been in, it has not. For one, way to salty. Actually all the food we try is too salty, even the mint chutney. And I absolutely hate the fact that they use that frozen vegetable mix that my parents feed my in the 80's, lima beans included. Like they don't have enough scrap veggies from the other dishes that they could use in the Korma? A nice place such as this should have the decency to use fresh veggies. I have to use a Groupon up tonight there, and I'm not looking forward to the disappointment.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Kathmandu. Chicken Tikka Masala. Of course. If an Indian place can't master a staple there is no hope. My tikka masala was awesome. It was a prefect blend of creaminess and plenty of moist chicken. I agree with Nick G. that the cafeteria presentation is odd, but I don not agree that it deserves a lack of stars. I am very practical. If they had to plate all of the sides that a meal comes with, there would be a mountain of dishes stacked to the roof.

  • David D.

Used to enjoy this place, but it's going downhill. Most recent dinner was very disappointing, from the terrible, awkward service (bad even for Indian restaurants!) to the "hot" appetizers that were cold inside (yes, they pre-make them and freeze them). Had to get up from the table several times to ask for things. Way too expensive for all that. Sadly, won't go back anytime soon, if ever.

This is, in my opinion, the best Indian food in the Sacramento Valley and better than most of the Indian I have had in my travels through the U.S. All the spices and flavors are spot on. It rocks that a restaurant this good is in Midtown - one more reason to never leave.

  • Lynne V.

I was taken to this place twice and the two times I've been here, the food was great both times. Although the place was small, but the food speaks louder than the size of their restaurant. One thing I have to gripe about is their appetizer portion, which if i can remember right wasn't that big that you can share with a group of people so you would have to order multiple appetizer dishes. However, the entrees were delicious especially their curries. The special lamb curry dish was delicious - that is my favorite dish there. It is loaded with intense spices and flavor that just mixes well in your mouth and makes you crave for more. I wouldn't recommend getting spicy since it doesn't help with enjoying the food. Overall, I would come back for their curries :)

This place, has the best lamb I've ever had. Sacramento has a lot of good indian restaurants and Kathmandu tops my list. While the place may not be as crowded or popular as restaurants like Bombay Bar and Grill, their food was hard to beat. We had their kitchen special (lamb), saffron shrimp, and lamb rack (the restaurant special). While the saffron shrimp was delicious, neither of us were too fond of it as we've both had entrees that used saffron more skillfully. However, their lamb was close to perfection. The bill came out to a little more than we expected, but was worth the meal. If you've never explored their lamb, or Indian food in general, give Kathmandu Kitchen a visit!

I am in love with Indian food. However, this place made Indian food go down the drain. Sorry, only reason I came here was because of a Groupon. But, let me tell you the food is expensive. The service was good. But, the food and the price of the food didn't match. The Naan just tasted like bread. It wasn't fluffy or anything. It was hard. I don't know what kind of fresh Naan it was. It tasted like it was right from the bag. Also, can you say HOT? No, not the curry, the whole building! I was sweating like a pig. Turn on the AC. Also, I told my co-worker to try the place. But, she also didn't like it much. She had the lunch buffet and wasn't happy. I would rather go to the Cheesecake Factory. Heck I would rather go to Taco Bell!

Mmmmm...Good spices! We had the Kitchen Special and Lal Maas (both are lamb). Both were completely amazing and tasty! I got my order HOT and it was so good, the lamb was very tender! My mouth burned a little and I must say the spinach sauce is outstanding! Lal Maas was very good, the lamb was perfect (imo) it had great texture, flavor, and tenderness. The naan was really tasty and so was the puri; which was good but more the man's thing than mine. It was yummy tho... I had the Himalayan Iced Tea which was delicious! For dessert: Kulfi...very yummy... Definitely going to try to experience more of this place! Not very expensive & worth every penny.

I really enjoyed the food here. I ordered a lamb and a shrimp dish and both were tasty and well cooked. I ordered a Pina Colada to accompany my meal and was surprised at how fresh and pleasant it tasted. I was a little underwhelmed by the portion sizes. At the price I usually expect to have leftovers to box up. The lack of portion size was highlighted all the more when the waiter asked if he could box anything up for us when it was clear the only thing left on the table was a few mouthfuls of rice. So the service was a bit hodge podge the night I came for dinner, my husband had to re-ask for his cup of coffee half way through the meal and the server got confused which one of the identical dishes for our table was spicy and which was mild which caused some problems since they didn't come out at the same time. The unfortunate language barrier created much confusion and inevitably the person who ordered the meal spicy was half way through the food feeling slightly gipped before the real spicy dish came out and was given to the person who wanted it mild. It also took forever to get the bill. That said our water glasses were kept consistently topped up. All that said I would probably come back- especially if I was planning to head out afterwards someplace I couldn't take along left overs, but would probably give the place a miss if I was truly really hungry.

Went there for lunch on a Friday. Parking was atrocious. But I was lucky to have found a spot on the street. Decided to try the buffet because I was hungry and didn't feel like waiting. The restaurant is a bit small to have a buffet. The selections were limited. The best items were the Chicken curry, tandoori chicken and the lentils. came with a side of naan. The placement of the plates and bowls could be better, they were using a couple of tables in the dining room for this purpose and it made the buffet area very crowded. The food was OK as far as "Indian style" cuisine is concerned. I will probably go for the menu the next time I come here as I looked over at the table next to ours and the food looked better and appeared to be more authentic. They could really benefit from a re-model, or at least a re-arrangement of the tables and buffet area. Will come back again and try the menu, pass on the buffet unless you're in a hurry.

Recent Indian cuisine cravings has led me here. I give them 5 stars because their lunch buffet is awesome! Service is great! And kid friendly! Friendly staff too! The waiter comes around when you need something. And they have the best lamb stew! I would recommend those who do not like spicy food to order mild spicy. And parking could be hard to find. But keep up with customer service Kathmandu because you are the best! I will definitely keep coming back.

Sacramento needs a better selection of cheap Indian food. Having put that out there, I have always been happy with Kathmandu Kitchen. Good food and decent portions. Ambience and location is nothing special, hate to say it. Not ideal for "date night".

The lunch buffet came to $9.69 with tax. Here's why I won't be back: I was greeted & seated and went to the buffet. There were 2 kinds of rice, one of which had the tell-tale frozen veggie mix of cubed carrots, cut green beans, and peas. Ick. Other than that, there were 2 dessert items, and maybe 5 lunch items. I tried most and found them to be barely warm (temperature-wise). The veggie pakoras were tough and had obviously been sitting for too long. *note: I was there from about 1:00-1:30 on a Thursday. The food was okay, just okay. Hard to really enjoy when it wasn't hot enough to begin with. I was never asked if I wanted anything to drink besides water and I sat through half of my meal with an empty water glass that was never refilled. After going back for a bit more rice to finish my plate, they brought the naan. What?! I had been there for about 20 minutes by this time and was clearly bites away from being done. I was still hungry, but there was nothing I wanted more of. I pushed my plate away and waited. And waited. No more water, no bill arrived. I went to the counter and paid there. Left hungry and totally unsatisfied.

Stopped here for lunch and was quite surprised by the quality of the food here. Good selection in the buffet, and spicy enough to make an Indian foodie feel at home... definitely stopping here the next time I am in town.

Came here for their buffet lunch. I can't comment on the meat dishes since I'm a pescatarian, but my mom said they were pretty good. Our favorite though was the vegetable Korma. Absolutely delicious with some whole peppercorns and I think I got a big crunch of nutmeg here and there. Wonderful flavors. The greens (spinach?) were really tasty. Loved the basmati with peas and the naan was truly wonderful. Some of the dishes were a little heavy on the salt though like the fish which I was really looking forward to. Some of the chutneys could do with less salt too. Overall though, fresh, wonderful aromatics, delicious tasting and pretty good service. I like this place better then Bombay.

One of the best Indian food places in Sacramento. I recommend coming for lunch as the buffet is always great. I always look forward to eating here.

On Wednesday I went to Kathmandu with nine friends and had a pleasant experience. If I hadn't gone to Bombay two days prior, I probably would have given it four stars, but I felt that the food was slightly better at Bombay (specifically the naan). Our server was pretty darn amazing and very patient. Almost everyone at out table was vegan and she did a wonderful job pointing out the items we shouldn't order. I started off with a samosa and it was so flippin' delicious. For my entree I chose the Alu Mutter. Someone else at my table ordered the same dish but at a the spiciest level (I ordered mild) and out meals were accidentally switched. I usually like some spice, but it was a little unbearable for me and I ended up only picking out the potatoes. I saw that they had a buffet set up. I'm not sure if they do buffet style lunches, but that is something I'd be more interested in trying.

What an awesome find! Nine of us were meeting up for dinner and this place was suggested by a group member who said it was the best Indian Food he's had in Sac. He may have been right. We decided to dine family style which allowed us to sample much of their menu. Some of the table's favorites were Lamb Korma (a yellow curry with cashews), Lamb Saagwala (everyone loved the lamb dishes as they were the first to go), Chicken Vindaloo (ordered medium spicy, leaving a touch of heat after every bite), Chicken Tikka Masala (delicious), Nepali style Samosas (different than your usual Samosas and worth a try), and garlic naan (you can't go wrong with garlic naan). The appetizer sampler had a great selection and something for everyone. The chicken pacora were the first items to disappear. I really enjoyed tasting all the chutneys and sauces. We also ordered Palak Paneer and Chana Masala; both were pretty standard. Everyone in our group was really happy with dinner, from frequent Indian food diners to those just recently introduced. The restaurant itself was very open and well-decorated, adding to a very pleasant dining experience. I also want to mention how accommodating the service was. We arrived at 8pm and after eating dinner, we still had to have our meeting. Despite closing at 10pm, they did not rush us out of the restaurant. That doesn't happen too often.

The stars may move up with another visit but for nowI felt it was just okay. We went there after buying a Groupon for the place. The interior is nice and the service was friendly and attentive, but it was pretty slow this afternoon. We ordered off the menu, passing on the buffet, not my thing knowing the biz as I do. We started off with the Himalayan App sampler. It presented well, (I posted a pic) and all items were quite nice, including the array of sauces for dipping. I noticed on a few items though that salt was too heavy. I had the veggie Chau Chau Thali and enjoyed it for the most part. My GF had the Palak Paneer Thahli but we found it to be way too heavy with salt. Not sure if it was just this day, but it really made it a not so enjoyable dish. This was our first visit and we will certainly give them another try. I actually am inclined to have a nice tall brew and that app sampler again and call it good for a lunch. Dinner I would be inclined to have one of the lamb dishes next time in. I'll keep you posted on future visits.

Pros: Great atmosphere -- many Indian restaurants are overfurnished, too dark, weirdly formal, or just ugly. This place was decorated by someone with taste. Varied menu -- not just the standards. Delicious food! The veggie pakora was the best I've ever had. The Baigan Bharta was subtle, complex, and very, very tasty. Great selection of Indian and Nepalese beers. Cons: Pricey. Figure $15-18/person, not including drinks. The nan was average. Notes: I'd love to see more Nepalese food highlighted, as well as an explanation of the differences between Indian and Nepalese food. The spice level here is hotter than other Indian places we've tried.

The entire meal was a fantastic experience - the service was excellent, each dish was fresh and flavorful, and unexpected flavors like the Sweet Lassi - amazing with just the barest hint of cardamom. Chai tea "just like at the ashram" exclaimed my boyfriend! We'll definitely be back.

Boyfriend wanted to flavorful Indian food. Yummo! We went for dinner tonight. Party of 5. Service was pleasant even though waitstaff had to be reminded to bring beverage of choice, hence the 4 stars. The food is very good and tasty. My boyfriend asked for "extra spicy" eggplant vegetarian dish. our waitress told him that she is Indian and can't handle that level of spice. But he insisted. After he ate he said it was -almost- to the level of spice/hot he wanted. :o I'm just waiting for the sphincter o'fire that will um... surface. Everyone else had a mixed grill or chicken grill. It was so yummmmy! I recommend this place. I do recommend reservations if u r a party of 4 or more.

I believe this place has a buffet seven days a week! SEVEN-DAYS-A-WEEK. Indian AND a buffet? How can those two words not be awesome together?? Could the price be a little bit less for the individual items? Sure, they could be, but I don't think the prices are unreasonable. But if you really want to get the best bang for your buck, definitely come for the buffet. The variety keeps getting better, and they finally have a website! They finally have a menu up with pictures! And I am a big proponent of ethnic restaurants having photos of their food online - sometimes, you just want to see what you're getting before you get it! Thank you Asian restaurants where I can order by the number because I can see what the food looks like! I hope you enjoy Kathmandu as much as I do!

Decent Indian food. The price isn't very good though. Service was attentive, the waitress asked multiple time if we are enjoying ourselves and even took the time to explain the different spices in the food. That gets one whole star. The food, however, is only decent. The initial bite is tasty but it lacks the depth of flavors that you usually find in Indian fare. The "Thali" option adds delicious mango chutney, a vegetable curry, dal soup and yogurt to your dish. It was only $3 more for my lamb curry (lal maas sp?). I enjoyed the chutney much more than the actual main dish. Overall, enjoyable but not memorable.

I love naan. And the stuff here is like naan on drugs, or naan mated with crispy tortilla and pizza dough. A carbohydrate threesome that was worth the morning after regret. For kicks, I let the server order for me and he did a good job. I had a lamb dish (yeah, I didn't catch the name. How unyelpy of me.) that was a nice flavor, a bright red, coral-colored sauce and just the right amount of spicy! When the server delivered the food, he requested that I take a bite in front of him, so he would know for certain whether or not I like it. Adorable. They were on top of it, filling up water and checking to make sure everything was all right. And it was. Next time, I am going straight for the samosas. Feasts in themselves from the looks of them. But somehow, all of this talk of Indian food has me craving sushi. Ooh, an Indian sushi roll. Talk to me, Goose.

I got carry-out from here last night, and it was quite tasty. I had paneer tikka masala, which was unexpectedly sweet, but even more delicious because of that. I can't wait to have the rest for lunch today! We also ordered the Himalayan appetizer, which features pakoras, samosas and momos with naan. Just for personal preference, I really only liked the samosas. And I really didn't like the momos, which are somewhat like potstickers. I also didn't like the naan -- it seemed too thick and bland and bready. Also, beware of Kathmandu's website, which we looked at for our order. Any site that forces you to listen to music, and then when looking at the menu, forces you to listen to a radio segment on the restaurant -- that's a major fail. This is not 2005. And not having controls over the sound is also not cool. I think I would probably come to Kathmandu all the time, though, if the parking situation wasn't so horrid. I've tried to come there for lunch only to be put off by having to walk for blocks.

This place was really great! I've only been once so far, as it is kind of expensive, but the food here is not quite like anything I've had before. I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, and my waitress was quite attentive, without being overbearing about it. Their chai iced tea was excellent, and everything was intensely and intricately flavored.

I've been here a few times for dinner and a few times for the lunch buffet. The buffet has all the typical dishes you see at an Indian buffet, it's nothing that will knock your socks off, but it is very tasty (a little mild though- but it's a buffet so whatever). The few times I came for dinner I noticed wow the service is slow... very slow. Portions are also really small for some dishes and prices are not low to match. I'd still come back for dinner though as this is probably the best place nearby for Indian. I'm eagerly awaiting for Mati's to finally open on P though, cheap and tasty Indian food even closer to home makes me smile.

I like Kathmandu. This is probably my 5th visit. I came here with 4 others and we all loved the food. The service is good. The atmosphere is casual. For the entree sizes, the price is a little high. Plenty of food, just no leftovers. I was also not pleased that our bottle of white wine was not cold at all. I didn't want to cause a scene so i didn't complain. My fault, i should have spoke up. I've had wine here before and never had that problem. Kathmandu has a large menu for carnivores as well as vegetarians. We shared the himalayan appetizers. Very good as usual. I got the Kitchen special for dinner which is lamb (with the bone) on top of spinach. Despite the bone, it was amazing. So yummy! I'm definitely going back for the food. I purchased a discounted gift card on restaurant.com for Kathmandu and had no problems using it. Just make sure the original bill is at least $50.

Almost one month later and must take away one star for diminished lunchtime experience. Almost the same dishes as offered before with the exception of masala fish which was cooked perfectly and tasty. However after spending one hour after the big lunch turnover we waited thirty minutes for complimentary naan to be served and still longer for the empty buffet dishes to be filled. The lamb curry was finally refilled as it was almost empty with bones and gravy when we initially arrived and the Tibetian Chau Chau noodle dish remained empty for the whole duration. It's so much nicer when they make an effort to keep the buffet filled especially when both of the cooks are making lots of racket in the back. If they don't have any ala carte orders to fill then What are they doing back there?

As far as Indian food goes, you MUST have Kathmandu! There's great diversity in their food and everything is AMAZING!!! If you're a big na'an fan or channa masala or butter chicken etc (they go by diff names here); you'll really love this place. They have an $8.99 lunch buffet that is wonderful. You must go. NOW. By the way, they have parking :)

I absolutely Love this place. It is sad that this is my first review and it will be taken off but I have to let everyone know that this is the best tasting most well-balanced Indian Nepali cuisine that I have ever had. I have eaten at some of the finest Indian restaurants and have even worked in a an Indian kitchen and this place is at the top of my list. The service is good and friendly and the price of the food is very good for both presentation, service, atmosphere and proportion of food. I Love both dinner and their buffet lunch and every-time I have gone I have never been disappointed. I hope that they continue to amaze me and I look forward to eating some more Paneer Tika Masala. I've been craving Nepali food for ages and was so happy to move to my new town and discover this place. We ordered the two veggie thalis and were not disappointed. Mango lassis were great, and they offered some unique chutneys I'd not tried before. It's not a fancy place, but I really appreciated the mural of the Himalaya. It brought back happy memories of a trip to Nepal a few years back. Much love for the mountains.

*Food was pretty tasty *Too much crap to pick out of each dish, bones, pits, stringy things in the OKRA, you name it, was like some sort of sick game of "find the weird crap that belongs in the garbage disposal" *Friendly wait staff *Their chutney has some serious shnizzle!

I ordered from this restaurant with my groupon and gave it a chance. We ordered 3 different types of curry or sauce oriented entrees plus three different types of bread. I loved the warm wheat bread stuffed with spinach. Yum. The food tasted good too. We had two red sauces and a brownish sauce. My friend wasn't impressed with the brownish stuff (sorry, don't know name) and I also thought it was not flavorful enough. My red sauce was tasty... sweet with indian spiace flavors. We paid almost 50 bucks though, for the whole order which I think is pretty high for Indian food which is cheap to make. Also, we took our food home and there was "just enough" rice for 3 people. Usually at Asian places the rice is plentiful. If the prices were lower, under $10, I'd go here again but I will try another Indian place next time. I liked the atomsphere though... Eastern but with a modern flair. It was pretty busy on a Sunday night so that was a good sign too. UPDATE 6/24/2012 I forgot that I had been here before and ordered take-out today. A+ that they do take-out! I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and made to order Palak Paneer Paratha (cheese and spinach Paratha which is wheat bread). I got a lot of bread for $10 and the entree was still somewhat small for $13 that I paid for it but probably typical restaurant size. The chicken was tender though and the taste was good. As per usual with restaurants, there is about two servings of food per order. I'm looking forward to having the rest for dinner tonight!

Kathmandu was introduced to me by an Indian (from Gujarat) coworker at my first job. Since then, I've tried all manner of Indian spots around town and Kathmandu is the one I keep coming back to. Delicious, hot food, reasonable prices, and unique flavors give Kathmandu the edge over any other spot in town. Being generally a non-bread eater, I can't go there often. But, when I do, the garlic basil naan satisfies, the Tikka Masala sauce is a party in my mouth, and the servers are quick and attentive. I would give 5 stars for the food alone, but the generally run-down looking building and frequent shady Broadway street walkers drop a star for me. I've been harassed by bums more than once who come into the restaurant. The waiters always chase them off quickly, but I'd rather not deal with that sort of thing, dig?

A great restaurant on Broadway. The chicken tikka masala is really good, and can be made spicy. The naan is also good. They delivery, but got lost the time we tried that. Lesson learned, we walk now for take out. Definately a lot of flavor and spice, just the way I like it.

We tried Kathmandu Kitchen on a Friday night. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was unusually sweet but not bad. I ordered it Thali style and got vegetable curry, raita, some unusual chutney with potatoes in it, rice, and naan. The naan was probably some of the best I have had - I ordered a side of Kabuli Naan as well, and while the filling wasn't the best I've had, the bread itself was puffy and wonderful. My husband got the chicken chau chau noodles medium plus hot and he was struggling, so I can't imagine what the hot would have been like! Service was good and the place was hopping on a Friday night.

Why can't we do half stars? Didn't know how busy it would get, so I called ahead of time to make reservations. They said there was no need to and walk-in would be fine. Yep, there were only 2 other tables when we arrived at 7:30pm. I took the advice of other Yelpers and ordered the Shrimp Vindaloo and Chicken Makhani. Also, we got the Himalayan Appetizer, garlic naan, and Mango Lassi. Mind you, there were only 2 of us, so this was plenty of food! The appetizer for 4 is decently priced- at $6.95, you get one each of 4 items and four dipping sauces. I really enjoyed the variety of sauces- Spicy Tomato, Mild Tomato, Mint, and Tamarind (Tamarind was my favorite!). Originally, I thought the prices weren't bad- about $12 for an entrée. However, when the dishes came out, I was shocked how TINY the portions were. I guess it wasn't THAT bad, but for those prices, I expected more. That aside, all the dishes were really good. I enjoyed the Chicken Makhani. The vindaloo was okay. The spices and flavors were different, but good- can't pinpoint what it is about them though. To end the night, we had mango lassi. I thought it was mango jello (ops, should've read the description). It was a yogurt-based mango smoothie-like drink, topped with whipped creamed and served in a small glass. It was a tad too sweet for my preference, but it was still very yummy.

Vegetarian paneer tikka masala has rich complex flavors. I ordered the sampler and liked everything very much. Naan could've had more salt but maybe that's just me. Dal was spicy hot and other things not so much. Great service, peaceful atmosphere. Hadn't had Momos before and they were good but there were too many of them in the sampler. I thought we waited awhile for the food while my friend didn't. Only thing I didn't like were the paper napkins.

I heard so much good things about this place so I had to try it out. I went here for dinner with my coworkers the other day and decided to make reservations since we heard it was always busy. Since it was not that busy though, we got our orders in pretty quick by a very friendly staff. For appetizer we got Kukhura Ko Sekuwa (Chicken Tikka). It is basically boneless chicken pieces marinated in mild spices. For me, it was a good way to start a meal; however, I think I had better. Drinks: Lassi Mango which was yummy after I added a pack of sugar in. It reminds me of a smoothie but less sweet. I would definitely recommend trying this. Entree: Chicken Makhani, (Butter chicken). YUMMMY!!! I would recommend getting this if you like creamy curry. I ordered it hot, which was not even hot enough!!! If you are not a fan of spicy food you can get mild or medium. With garlic naan, this meal was a big hit. Dessert: Rus Malai. The only reason I did not give this place a 5 is because I was not a big fan of the dessert. This dish is an Indian cheese in a creamy sauce. I will probably come here again, but just not get dessert. =)

Service was great. Very attentive. Just wish they told me a little about the dips and sauces. We had the Himalayan sample platter. They were delicious. All of it. Had four sauces but I have no idea which is which. Then we had the mango chicken. Lamb vindalo mmmm The owner or someone came by and took pictures of the food with us in it too and gave us a description of the food, which I think is very helpful. Service and ambience is great.

Saturday mid-afternoon we'd set out for a restaurant we had been to previously only find out it was closed. Looking left and right we saw Kathmandu Kitchen and, spur of the moment, decided to see what was inside. We are really happy our "regular" place was closed. Entering the restaurant we were greeted with the aroma of the most delicious spices and the view of a pleasant place to eat. Although not grandly decorated the overall feeling was intimate Given the hour it was not surprising there were few others save the group of 15 or so at one table. We are certainly not connoisseurs of Indian or Nepalese food but we do know what we like and we very much liked the food here. The spices were just right, some items mild and others with more heat but the blending was perfect. Everything was fresh and, we could tell, prepared with care and love. We shared both the Kathmandu Kitchen Special--outstandingly flavorful lamb chops--and the Vegetable Sampler--a wide and tasty variety of appetizer-like foods. Very adequate portions. Fine service provided by pleasant people. The menu is quite lengthy which made choosing difficult but we did make the right choices. When we left we were full and happy and resolved we shall return to savor more items on the menu here. We can't quite get to five stars (yet!) but there is no option for four-and-three-quarter stars.

The last three times I've ordered take out, they have been awesome: efficient, friendly, and given good recommendations. It's a good pick for Indian food, and the take out is packaged in a sturdy containers, so things don't spill.

I had this uncontrollable hunger for something "curry" but could not decide where to go. I've been to Mati's and Shaz and Kaveri and Bombay Bar & Grill and India Oven, but wanted to try a place I have not been to. A quick yelp brought me to Kathmandu Kitchen. The restaurant is clean and the service is courteous and attentive. $10 for a Sunday buffet lunch is a good price. The variety and taste of food is well worth it. Street parking on Broadway is spotty but I was able to get good parking at the corner of 18th and Burnett Way.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Had a Groupon and decided to check out the place for my birthday lunch. Wrong move. Was told by the waitress that we could use the Groupon for the buffet. We finished our lunch and preceded to pay. The elderly man behind the counter then informs us that the Groupon was only good if we ordered off the menu. We tried to explain that we were told otherwise by the waitress and when we asked the waitress if she can back up her claim, she lied and said we had shown her a different coupon earlier ! OMG! The elderly man then said we were trying to cheat him and started getting loud. Never had I felt so belittled and humilated by a person in customer service. We would've accepted an apology from the waitress saying she made a mistake but she'd rather save her butt then do the right thing: fess up and tell the truth. Needless to say, I got a Groupon that I'll never use and a bitter taste in my mouth for my birthday =(

One of the best Indian cuisine restaurants in Sacramento! I come here at least once a month for dinner. Service is amazing and the Taj Mahal beer is tasty. I always get a combo of curry chicken or saffron chicken with the side of channa masala. The naan bread is always fresh and delicious too.

I am so excited that my 50th review is for one of my favorite restaurants in the city. KK is the best Indian food in Sacramento, period. No, don't try and argue. It's the best. It boggle's my mind that this place was voted best Indian food in Sac! Went for lunch today and had the buffet based on server's very enthusiastic recommendation. Bleh. Indian food is about spice and complexity, but the food here was so ... not complex. NO layers of flavor, just ... bleh .. The food looked like it had been sitting out for a while and the trays had not been refreshed since service started. The guy cleaning the tables crashed into my friend and nearly knocked him over .. but couldn't be bothered to say excuse me or sorry. But here's the kicker .. I am used to Indian food being well accepted by my body, almost healing. Ancient combinations of spices expertly crafted to be easily digested and having an energizing or soothing effect .... Quite the opposite here. I felt ill before I ever left the the table, and by the time I got to my car I was seriously nauseated. Got a call later from my friend who went with me, and he was wrecked for the day too ... both of us too ill to even think about supper ... if this is the best Indian Sacramento has to offer ... skip it and grab some healing ramen at Shoki.

I love this place!!!!! I have yet to find a better paneer tikka masala in restaurants in London or NYC or SF. The service is not amazing so don't go for that reason. But the food is wonderful! It is a mix between Nepalise and Indian cuisine, which means less spicy and more creamy dishes that are wonderful. Someone wrote that parking sucks. Just drive around the corner and park in the neighborhood. Why are people always disturbed when they can't park within 10 feet of the entrance :0. I

So to start off I bought a groupon and always wanted to try this place out whenever passing by but never had the chance to. So 8/24/2012 we used the groupon for a little date night dinner. I'd have to say the service was great. The staff was friendly and when it came to recommendation she was really great with that.We started off with a mixed appetizer and it was yummy. Especially the mint sauce and tamarind sauce that was use for dipping hhhhmm hmmm yum!!! I Love Lamb so I ordered the Rack of Lamb with the Spinach sauce. I chose to go with the Thali so I could get a taste of everything. The lamb was so tender and yummy and the spinach sauce went so well with the naan and the lamb everything was so yummy. My BF ordered the Chicken Tandoori it came out sizzling piping hot on a skillet with onions and bell peppers and it came with a side of naan. The aroma of all the spices they put into their food was so tantalizing and jumped all around on my taste buds. So delicious I could taste it.The portions there are huge so one Thali entree is enough for 2-4 person. I would recommend everyone try this place at least once and experience the food and what their culture has to offer.

Never been here before until tonight..... We found this place on the web.... Atmosphere was... hmmm... ok... Service was just fine.. Food was solid... We tried several items including a chicken and lamb dish.... The food was hot... tasty... The chicken could have been flavored a little better... We will come back again...

I just love indian food, and started coming here when it opened. We went to the one in Davis years ago. The nepalese dishes are great if your into healthy exotic. The vegetable momo are a nice starter. Chutnies are great. The servers appear to not grasp the english language, which has been frustrating. As far as parking goes, im thinking the lot nearby is designated for the japanese restaurant next door. The atmosphere is very serene, a bit too open, but the location, decor, decent service, and delicious, healthy veg options keep me and my fam comming back!

Very Good! My mom bought a Groupon for this place so we thought we would try it out. It's a medium sized restaurant on Broadway, so we weren't sure what we would get. It was actually very good. A little expensive but well worth it. While some staff doesn't speak much English we had a waiter who was very kind and gave suggestions that helped us zero in on exactly what we wanted. I am a huge fan of Chicken Saagwala (chicken in a spinach sauce). It was THE BEST saagwala i have ever had. My mom has never liked it and she would not stop picking off of my plate....which was huge! It came with the best naan ever (perfectly thick, fluffy and doughy). WE both agreed that it was amazing. The plate also came with lentils, curry, vegetables, rice, raita and something sweet i couldn't identify. We definitely had lots of leftovers which were amazing the next day. We saw another table order the sizzling tandoori chicken. We both agree that we NEED to go back and try that! It's a wonderful little establishment and i highly recommend it if you love Indian and/or Nepalese food.

I have dined in here twice before and was very pleased with the food and the service; last night I tried their take out. The food was still hot by the time I got home (about 15 minutes later), and t'was delicious (which I had predicted it would be since It has been good before). I ordered the lamb tikka masala and loved it, though I think they put some mysterious cuts of lamb in there, and the naan was perfect. A couple of downsides though: they gave me a lot of sauce in proportion to the amount of lamb - but there wasn't like a skimpy amount of lamb or anything. The vegetable samosas were just okay, and they gave us an unnecessarily massive amount of rice. But I got two meals out of my order and again, the flavors were great. Three score meals here, and I'll definitely be back!

Not the best Indian food I've ever had , but pretty good Chicken Tikka Masala and Naan, so I would go there again. My big problem with this place was the price - it just seemed way over priced to me for what you were getting. I'm still on the hunt for an amazing indian restaraunt in the Sacramento area...

Absolute worst service I've ever gotten from a restaurant. I waited over 2 hours for my food. They were the most unfriendly, uncaring bunch of buttholes I've ever seen. Food was horrible. They do not care. No customer service.

My friend Pamela, know it all and foodie extraordinaire, taught me how to order at this place. The key: order the veggie dishes. The meat dishes are way less flavorful! I dont know if they are trying to convert us all to vegetarianism or what, but it is true. Here's what you order: 1. A round of Taj Mahal beer for the whole table. 2. The Veggie Momo - delicious steamed dumplings stuffed with savory seasoned vegetables - like a potsticker but better. Served with5 or 6 dippin' sauces. 3. The Chana Masala - garbonzo beans are the main element. 4. The Saag - creamy spinach and paneer. 5. Garlic Cilantro Naan Delicious meal! Feeds 3-4 - under $50. I crave the momo about once a week. Oh, and who doesn't like an Indian buffet for lunch once in awhile?

so delicious :)!! i always order the chicken tika masala and it is always made perfectly!! never had a problem with the staff. they have always been very friendly. the only downside to this place is that if you want to sit down and eat here, its difficult to find parking on broadway. it is kinda pricey, but you get what you pay for. Deliciousness!

I am new to Indian food and was happy with what I ordered here. We went with a group, and the atmosphere was nice enough that you could hear everyone at the table talk. The staff was attentive and made sure our water glasses were always full! I ordered the chicken tikka masala -- thali, not a la carte, which was way more food than I could manage! (Especially after an appetizer of some tasty, crispy samosas.) The naan was particularly good. All in all, it was very tasty, but a little on the pricier side. Again, I'm new to Indian food but I might hope to find a place that still makes good food, but is maybe a little less expensive!

Before the kitchen fire a few years ago, this place was a lot better. I don't know what happened but it's gone downhill. I've tried it at least 3 times since they came back from the fire but I always walk away disappointed for one reason or another. Neither service nor food is very consistent. The baingan bharta is always good. Other dishes I give mixed reviews. I wasn't a big fan of the chicken tikka masala or the lal maas this last time. I don't know if they overload these things with food coloring or what but they're unnaturally vibrant. Mango lassi was good. Naan is decent. Vegetable samosa appetizers came out cold. The manager guy actually came to ask us if everything was ok after we got the samosas and i told him that they were cold and he was just like "ah ic" and left and never said or did anything about it! Maybe he didn't understand what I said. My biggest complaint is that the place is like an icebox in the winter. They turned on the heat after I asked but it didn't help much. Even with my jacket and sweater on throughout the entire meal, I was uncomfortably cold. Make sure you ask for your check or the just might forget to ever bring it to you. Apparently, asking for boxes isn't a good enough hint. I think this place could go as high as 4 stars during the summer, if you know what to order; 2 stars in the winter if you don't. Davis location has always been better.

My husband and i really enjoy this place. It is great for our mid week takeout, pretty quick and reasonable priced. We love the vegetarian sampler platter. I will say the momos are not my favorite, i don't love cilantro, so they happily swap those out for more pakoras and samosas. The staff is always friendly but dining in can be pretty slow. Parking has never been a problem for me. I definitely recommend this place.

okay forget the momos at KK! I am going to have to make my own! I tasted curry stuff in my momos tonight, it did not taste right! I like curry but not in my momos (dumplings). But the mango lassi was decent!

Maybe I've been spoiled from san francisco's indian food, but I was very disappointed in this restaurant. They service was horrible. I came late after my friend had already ordered food. I wanted to order another naan because I never tried it before. But the waitress just stared at me. like is that all you're ordering. Even thought I already told her he had ordered for me. The food: I always order chicken tikka masala for my curry. This one tasted like tomato sauce. It was soooo sweet not even a bit spicy. Then I also had chicken tandori which came out cold. I know they were going to close soon, but still I expect hot food when I order.

I grew up in Darjeeling, India which is very close to Nepal and I ate lots of Nepali food growing up! On my way to Gangtok, a small gorkha dhaba served the best dal, bhaat and tarkari with a huge solid green chilly, and onions if you asked. Also, on rainy evenings, we'd find momos off the carts on the street with really spicy and delightful momo chutney! I have been feeling very nostalgic for that food so I went on an authentic nepali food hunt! This place hugely disappointed me. The restaurant was full but there were no nepalis there. One of my friends asked for chai, and the waiter asked him if he meant chai-tea! (which is a pretty gross mistake to make if you're from that part of the world!). I asked him for mismas tarkari (which is the only thing I wanted with dal and bhaat), and he got a thali that contained everything else but that. Finally, the momo chutney was red chutney which was ok to eat on it's own right, but it wasn't what momo chutney should be! The food on it's own tasted ok but I am biased because it was not what I was looking for. I am hoping a yelper will blog about a REAL nepali place!

As the only option for Indian on Broadway, this place gets a bit of a pass and I think the high rating on Yelp is kind misleading - espiecially for the lunch buffet. Better Indian isn't hard to find (even in Sac), though dinner here is much better the lunch buffet. The dishes on the lunch buffet were weirdly flavorless, and though there were a few highlights, like the kabab sausage, those were minor. Their Chicken Tika Massala -- which I consider a kind of standard lunch buffet fare - was absolutely the pits, chicken chunks floating in a garish bright red soup (honestly, it looked like a b-horror movie) that tasted like a combination of ketchup and half-and-half. The veggie dishes, like others have said, were better, but still sub par. Where is the flavor? Even the sauces didn't seem fresh to me. For dinner, I've had mixed, though generally better experiences, even though NONE would approach a 4 or 5 star experience. My question to my fellow yelpers is: are our standards really so low?

Really more of a 2 1/2 stars but I'll err on the side of caution and give a 3 over a 2. Just, OK all the way around. The lunch buffet is enjoyable and reasonably priced, dinner, not so much. We did carry out dinner for the first time there and the serving sizes are pretty small. Apparently 1 cup of chicken vindaloo (an 8 oz carry out container) and a container of plain basmati rice are worth $12? At least the stir fried prawns filled the bottom of a large Styrofoam box. Veggie sampler was also just OK, with the curried veggie portion only amounting to about 3/4 of a cup, but at least the rest of it (5 vegetable momos, 2 samosas, bhat, and dal) filled up the box for the $10.95 price. Medium is not spicy at all, and lacked a strong flavor overall. The food was super quick and ready when I picked up 10-min after ordering. I wasn't impressed enough by the quality or quantity of any of the 3 items we ordered to pay $40 for dinner.

I really like the food here and I actually think that the one here in Sac is better than the one in Davis. I had only been to the one in Davis so I was skeptical the first time I came here. I was pleasantly surprised. I really love their food and the servers are all nice. I would have given it five stars but for the issue that I had there with takeout. I am vegetarian and ordered paneer tikka massala but when I got home, realized that they had given me chicken. Definitely upset. I called and told them and they said that the only way to rectify the situation in any way (refund or fix the food) was for me to drive all the way back, which I did. They handled it well and gave me a new dish as well as refunding me for it, but I was still really annoyed and a little bit put off of my dinner. Other than that mishap, I really like it and will probably continue to go back.

Based on only one visit for take out lunch on a weekday. I give five stars for food alone. Don't care for ambiance or service, though the place was alright. Vegie korma (spicy) - good tasting. Spicy enough. Just what I expected on a day when I craved vegie korma. Their vegie korma had raisins, nice touch. A bit of extra sauce would have been nice, but it was full of vegies, so no complaints. $8.95 comes with rice. Rice was rice, wasn't the best basmati, but was good. Side of plain naan for $1.95 - very fluffy. Gone in five minutes! Took a glimpse at the buffet. Meh. Just looked like quantity over quality. Total $13.68 for one. Very good food. I will be back to get more take out. Better than Kaveri Madras Cuisine.

I have to admit to being fairly new to Indian food, but I got a great Groupon deal for this place and decided to check it out. Now forgive me for my lack of knowledge on the correct names of these dishes, but you'll know what I mean... To start, my boyfriend and I ordered a sampler platter which had some chicken strip things, dumplings that looked like pot stickers, and some other things too. As my boyfriend was eating the dumpling, he developed a strange look on his face followed by him PULLING A RUBBERBAND OUT OF HIS MOUTH! Yeah, the dumpling had an entire rubberband in it. One of the blue ones that bunches up herbs and such when purchased. We were very nice about it, understanding that accidents can happen and the server was very apologetic. When the Masala (I think that's correct) came, it was just bland and unexciting. They ended up taking the appetizer off the bill but we still had to pay quite a bit with their prices. Here's the kicker, I should have but didn't read the fine print but my Groupon wasn't valid that day so we couldn't use it. I guess I'll go and try it again. Just no dumpling-type things where I don't know what's in it. I will also be sure to go during a busier time when I know things are freshly made. We were the only people there.

First of all, my opinion of this place is somewhat colored by a misunderstanding when my friend told me they had a lunch buffet (I was really looking forward to the buffet...). That being said, I ordered some chicken pakora--fried chicken basically--and when I took my first bite I noticed that it felt kind of chewy. There was a good reason for that: the chicken was almost raw. I called this to the waiter's attention and he apologized and took it away. He brought me a new one about 5 min later. This one was a little over cooked (much preferable to raw) and was pretty good. The naan was very doughy, but at least it tasted good The other people I was with seemed to enjoy their meals. The place isn't bad. I wouldn't refuse to come in again. But the prices are a bit high and to me the food wasn't that good.

Fabulous place - I always over order because I want to have everything! It's great for the next day as leftovers so it all works out well. My husband always orders the duck and loves it. It is not a small portion either - but enough to take home. Their appetizers are really good and very flavorful. The really remarkable thing is that they remember you when you come back and always engage you in conversation - the girls there are very very nice and the food is incredible - if you want a real treat head on over for a great meal!!!

I went to the Davis location several times, but it looks like it's closed. I've only been to the Sac location once, but the food was just as good as the Davis restaurant. As usual, I ordered the Vegan Thali Platter, which comes with mismas takari, puri, veggie momos (one of my favorite foods on the planet), samosas, rice, chole and chutney. We got there right at noon when they opened for lunch and pretty soon, the placed was packed. It seemed like we weren't the only ones with momos on our mind. They have the best momos. One of my favorite places to eat up in the Sac area. I look forward to my next trip up that way.

Normally I like this restaurant, but not lately. They advertise a lunch for two Groupon, when there is no way possible two lunches can be purchased for $14. The lunch buffet for one is $10.95 alone. They have another Groupon advertising dinner for four for $40, which is also, misleading advertising. Lastly, went in there Sunday when temps climbed to 108 degrees. AC not working..... Debated whether to stay. Had our $14 lunch Groupon and asked if we could use our 20% neighborhood discount card with it. It was so miserably in hot in there, we figured we would come back another day, so he said we could use the 20% neighborhood loyalty card also. That enticed us enough to stay. Guess what, when the bill came, he didn't let me use the 20% discount after all and he acted all confused. Sorry, not only will I not go back, they just lost a very loyal customer in the neighborhood. Bait and switch, lying and using language confusion as a ploy does not work for me.

YIKES! A FORK IN MY MOMO! I was eating my momo and to my surprise bit down on a hard piece of plastic. It was a big prong of a fork of some sort! How does this happen?!?! Someone is clearly not paying attention at all to roll a fork into a momo, not to mention the unsanitary kitchen conditions that would allow for this. I brought this to the attention of the owner and they did nothing - no apology, no comping the meal, nothing (even though I was so disgusted that we had to leave without finishing). Very unprofessional. I can't imagine going back ever again. Aside from this unforgivable dangerous situation, their food (at least within the last couple of years - I can't vouch for long ago) just does not compare to real quality Indian restaurants. Americanized, lukewarm, reheated or festering, seemingly not prepared fresh, inconsistent, unexciting. The service is rude on the worst days and uncaring on the best. Overpriced. Good things? I guess the Broadway location is convenient... Other than that this place is pretty much just totally bad. Instead, try Pooja in West Sac. Although this place is maybe not where you would expect a great restaurant to be, it is a hidden gem. Underrated and absolutely delicious - we return again and again.

So far, this is my favorite Indian food in town. I have to admit that I haven't been to many places in town, and many of them are just of the "not great, not bad" variety, but Kathmandu still stands out as being something pretty special. My favorite dishes there are the Chicken Tikka Mosala, the Palak Paneer (which is, as far as I can tell the same thing as Saag Paneer, but I guess that northern cuisine has a different name), the Chada Mosala, the Chicken Vindaloo and Lamb Vindaloo. The Mosala sauces are a fantastic consistency. It's smooth and thick, but not thick like a paste, and also not runny. They're also very flavorful without being just salty and buttery, but they are far from bland. I normally order my food "medium" spicy. I could probably handle it a little more spicy, at least to start out, but it is of course the kind of spicy that is moderate at first, but creeps up on you and intensifies as you keep eating. None of it is so spicy that it meets the criteria of being the basis of one of those horror stories about people who try to eat ethnic food that's as spicy as the natives have it and end up with third degree burns on their tounge. If you order the hot hot, though, it is a good kick. They have a variety of different group dinner combinations that are often just right for sharing with a group of people, which is also economical. It's a nice neighborhood-type establishment, but it's not too casual, so it wouldn't be a bad place to take a first date, your parents, people from work, etc., as long as they don't mind a little character. The atmosphere is quaint and clean, and the service is not too bad, they're always very friendly. If it weren't for that my budget only allows me to eat there ever so often and my tendancy to eat enough for three days all at once when I go there, I'd probably make it a point to eat there at least twice a week. The parking is mostly on-street, but there is a small lot near it. It may not actually belong to them, but a lot of people park there to eat at Kathmandu. It's not very big, though, so it fills up fast. Just count on having to park on the street.

Delicious and extensive Vegetarian menu. We started with the Himalayan Appetizer, which was a small meal in itself. All of it was delicious and a perfect beginning. I had the Mughlia Saag and my husband had the Vegetable Chau Chau (both as the traditional dinner). We asked for our dishes medium and they were quite spicy, which was exactly what we were looking for. The yogurt accompanying the dinner was a perfect complement for the fire in my mouth. Everything was absolutely wonderful and we still have enough left over for another meal. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. No complaints from me so 5 stars it is.

This is absolutely my most beloved Nepalese/Indian restaurant in Sac!!!! One of my boyfriend's nicknames is Curry Monster, and this restaurant always does an excellent job satisfying the monster's burning desires. He enjoys their chicken curries (especially the scrumptious chicken makhani), but I prefer the lamb dishes. Lamb Sagwala may resemble a processed baby food because of the mushy spinach, but don't let the unappetizing look fool you. It tastes great, and its spiciness is definitely not for a baby. Kadai lamb is another dish I love. Very hearty and luxuriously spiced! Isn't it great that we don't have to fly all the way to Kathmandu to enjoy the true taste of South Asia?

I adore this place. The Korma sauce is to DIE for! The decor is very nice and even a tad on the classy side, it would be a decent place to grab a meal with friends or even on a date. The prices are decent for dinner, and the service is good (if not terribly fast). I love the location in downtown which means its easily accessable. I would reccomend this place to Indian/Nepalese Lovers and skeptics alike.

As an Indian food lover I recommend this place with complete confidence. Outstanding food, large helpings, at a very reasonable price. For example, the Himalayan appetizer is only 6.95, and my boyfriend and I could barely finish it. unlike many Indian restaraunts, they were quite generous w the nan. I highly recommend getting the entree Nepali style. Which means the entree is served in a large metal dish with different compartments (kinda like an old school TV Dinner). Each compartment is filled with different items. For, example, one compartment is filled with your entree and one with basmati rice, one with a potato dish, and one with a curry dish. This is fun for the person who likes to try different things or if your just not sure what to get. I had no idea what some of the dishes were but I loved them. There is also a lunch buffet available. Service is polite and prompt.

Yum. - chicken tikka masala = wonderfully creamy - mango lassi = not too sweet, was refreshing - chicken saagwala = good, but not the best that I've had, would order again - kathmandu special (?) lamb = yum! I have nothing else to contribute that hasn't already been said. It's a solid place to try for Indian food. Edit: I don't think I'll be coming back here any longer. The last time I dined there, I used their restroom and saw that whoever occupied the restroom before me had bled all over the toilet and there was some more blood on the floor. I had a friend tell me once that a way to see if a restaurant is clean is to check out the bathroom. Um, if there's dried blood on the toilet and the bathroom floor ... then I don't wanna know what the kitchen looks like. I'm nauseous now.

To be fair, I only have been here once, the day after I went to the Davis one, and I did order takeout. . . But I just did not like it as much. 5 Stars for the food. It was great, well defined flavors and each curry was unique. Not the general mush that some people pass off as curry. But then I sure did pay for it, hence the minus one star. One ala carte and one thali. It came out to $35 after tip for lunch. That's a bit pricey for me. I followed Adam R's lead to order off the menu and not the buffet. But I think the buffet has much better variety and value. I have major food coma now. It's nap time for me.

I have only been during lunch for the buffet. My coworkers and I cannot get enough! To be honest, I came with reservation as the outside and the neighbors are not the nicest. The inside is clean and the food delicious. If you are into breads, the naan is amazing.

Let me preface this review by stating that I have been here before and eaten a much heralded meal. Unfortunately this was the exception. My wife and I used the site restaurant.com to get a gift certificate for a reasonable price. Looking forward to an evening of Indian and Nepali delights we were dismayed at the offerings of the past night ago. We opened with a Mango Lassi (spelling?) Amazingly creamy and bright mango fruit and yogurt beverage (closely resembling a smoothie but minus the unsavory frozen-ness of it's relative). I imagined if we were served the lassi during the meal, the smooth and cooling beverage would've accompanied the spicy entrees well. The mixed appetizers came second and although on the menu it explains that it feeds 2-4 people ( much like the Himilayan Platter, which I highly reccomend, if chosing an appetizer) the pakoras came in 3, the alu tikki was 1, a smatter of smallish chicken pieces (3), and one large (supposedly meat filled) Samosa, didn't seem to split very evenly between the two of us. (Sure we don't mind cutting and sharing bites, the Himilayan Platter was so porportionate it left me feeling cofused). Now the actual eating of gave me mixed feelings as well. The pakoras seemed under-cooked. The alu-tikki was lacking in flavor (truly becoming a mashed potato pancacke). The chicken pieces were dry and small (they made no sense in this platter and served as no gastrinomical fair). Lastly, the samosa was by far better than the baby ones served on the Himilayan platter, here all of the ingredients are served in ample amounts within the batter/dough of the shell. Lal Maas: This is a lamb dish of boneless lamb cubes cooked with red chili sauce, garlic, onion, black cardamon, cumin seeds, yogurt, coriander, and Turmeric powder. My wife and I ordered this dish last time, it was amazing. This time it was almost completely cool, congeled like. Salmon Tandoori: anything else tandoori style may have been worth it, but the salmon is cut into the tiniest cubes that once cooked you peel the scales, slough off the fat, and pull out the bones (which we weren't aware were in there at first) it's not worth the half a second of meat you get from atop the scorched onions. Of course it smells delightful, but the eating part wasn't very exciting (flavors didn't seep through from the layers that must be peeled back to get to the meat) Naan was brought to us cold, Rice was torched (nothing worse than crunchy rice). And even on a slow evening our waitress only brought us food, never checked in on us, and never brought us a check. We inquired with another gal before paying and leaving. I hate to have such icky experiences at a place that I know is much better than this. I will give them one more shot at my business, but this can't happen again.

I love this restaurant. It is my absolute favorite! I enjoy the paneer tikka masala- it is always seasoned just right! Their samosas are delicious as well. For a taste of everything, get the Himalayan appetizer. Don't forget the naan! The people who own this restaurant are always very kind and it is a joy to dine at their establishment.

This place is yummy, but I miss Majarani. Majarani made inconsistently good fried chicken tenders (mmmm, dipped in tamarin, spiced with cumin and garam masala). Inconsistent meaning sometimes they came slightly raw, so that's probably why it finally closed. I don't know if it's related to the restaurant with the same Kathmandu Kitchen name in Davis, but they are both yummy. I have noticed more cream based curry in the Nepalese-style food, but I don't know if that's just because that's how this family cooks. I am a vindaloo fan. I love hot, hot chicken vindaloo. I love it so much, I learned how to make it at home because really, you cannot eat vindaloo every day at a an Indian restaurant. That would be embarrassingly expensive. Also, good vindaloo is cooked on low for a long while, which means NO restaurant can make it perfectly, or else it's been sitting around awhile, because most people want their food within a few minutes after ordering. Kathmandu makes a very good vindaloo. Vindaloo should be spicy, but the spice kicks in AFTER you swallow the savory. It should be indescribably good (thanks to the pureed sauteed yellow onions and roasted cumin and coriander seeds) as well as spicy from the ginger and the garlic, and the fresh cilantro should cool you down a little. Best with a mango lassi. I also like their chutneys and their whole wheat naan with potatoes and peas (I forget what you call it.) Sooooooo yummy. It's making me want to cook curry tonight. Quickie Vindaloo: 2 onions cumin seeds coriander seeds black pepper salt garlic clove 1 fresh ginger root 2-3 tsp of garam masala (or make your own) 2 tomatoes 1-2 cups chicken broth 4 chicken breasts, skinless (can use thighs too, or lamb) 2 tbsp of olive oil or butter salt to taste 3-4 medium yellow potatoes chopped Soften 2 medium yellow onions (~3 cups) chopped and sauted in 2 tbsp unsalted butter or olive oil; I cook it actually on medium heat and stir it like crazy until it gets soft, then I turn it to low. in a dry frying pan, combine cumin seeds and coriander seeds, about 1 tbsp each, roast on low heat until the cumin seeds practically break into dust when you poke them (don't pop the corriander, it'll jump at you), grind in a grinder with a 1/4 tsp of black peppercorn add 2 tsp garam masala and 1 tsp cinnamon Peel and dice fresh ginger root, add to the onions to soften press 2 cloves garlic, add to onions roast 2 tomatoes, take out the seeds and take off the skins, dice Blend all of the ingredients together in your blender, add a little chicken broth if you need to wet it. I use skinless chicken breasts with the bone in; simmer the breasts in a medium sized pot on low-medium heat in the sauce and the rest of the broth until they are cooked through (35 minutes to 45 minutes); add the potatoes after 15 minutes of cooking and check them to make sure they are soft before serving. It's sort of like a stew, I guess. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and serve over brown basmati rice. So fucking yum. Mango lassi: blend 1/2 bag of TJ's mango chunks with TJ's vanilla yogurt and a tablespoon of honey. Oh man. I also make a lame version of aloo gobi. I can also make tomato butter chicken which is mild. I can't make tikka masala, although I've come close. Damn, I'm starving now.

Cream overload. I saw some beautiful food on other peoples' plates, but I unwisely chose the buffet, instead. The food was tasty but it sat in my stomach like a brick for about 6 hours.

I love this little gem. Seems to be open whenever I have a yen for chou chou and theirs is the very best I've had. I was tempted to just order that every time I went as its addictive but tried the mango chicken and also curried shrimp and both were fabulous. this has become my go to for Indian but I have to say it is slightly different than traditional Indian and in a good way. The spices are just perfect and all different and you are not going to get it super searing unless you ask for it!! The service is perfect(they recognize me now) and one day, even though they close at 3 for lunch, they still accomodated me as I slid in just before 3 and we ended up eating with the help. check it out! But leave a table for me.....

So, i've heard rave reviews from friends about this place. I finally had a chance to go check it out. The wife and I went there for lunch buffet. The waiters/waitresses were cordial and seated us. There were a variety of curries. I tried a variety of them. The food was OK. You definitely got your money's worth. However, the sauces tasted a little "off". Either too sweet or not enough. The highlight of the lunch was the naan. It was spectacular. Very fresh and the ghee was just enough. With everything said, I think it was a little hyped up and set me up for disappointment.

Wifey's Review: This is a very good place for flavorful Indian food. Their Chicken Vindoloo and Chicken Marsala is delicious! I always order their fresh naan. The spices are just right so I am not sniffling or feel like I am on fire. Wait staff is friendly and efficient. The neighborhood can be a bit sketchy at times, but it is ok if you are with friends. Prices are great for the fairly large portions you get. I can never finish my order so I always have enough for lunch the next day.

I'm a new fan of INDIAN CUISINE and this place is not that bad. I came on a day to try out their Lunch Buffet for 8.00, and the food wasn't half bad. Sadly to say, some foods were awfully salty... I really didn't like it. Service is good. Anyone who hasn't had inidian cuisine, give this place a try, then hit up the new Mana's next door, or is it Eddoko's still ? hehe EDIT: I recently went there for a 2nd time. I guess it wasn't salty anymore! GREAT FOOD...

This is a no frills just great food kind of Indian Restaurant. The parking is a bit hard to get into and get out of. It's a very small lot. I recommend trying to find street parking. The restaurant itself is good size. We went in for dinner and were seated right away. There are tons of vegan and vegetarian options. It's definitely in the medium range for cost. I ordered the vegan thali feast and it was $13. Well worth it! There food is extremely flavorful! I gobbled the whole feast down, even though there would be plenty for two meals. It was that good! Highly recommend giving it a try. I will be back to Kathmandu. It's a tasty little hot spot!

We had the vegetable sampler, chole soup, fish pakora, a strawberry lassi, a mango lassi, and I don't remember the name, but it was basically hard whipped cream ice cream for dessert. Everything was pretty tasty, although I'm a weenie when it comes to spice so I couldn't really drink the soup, which I didn't realize was super spicy (does chole mean chili?). The strawberry lassi was okay, more sour. The mango was better, more sweet. The samosas tasted a little stale and the vegetable sampler is good for two people. The dessert was awesome. Service was cut to the point and then super slow at the end, but I wasn't in a rush (my boyfriend was and he was upset by how long it took to get the bill). I would like to eat here again, but my stomach and butt were destroyed the next day, so I am hesitant. Tmi.. or just enough information...

With so many Indian options available in the market, this place unfortunately didn't made the cut to get that WoW factor. This was my first visit and most probably the last one. The Food choices were good, but the taste was just okay. Maybe that's the Nepalese style of making Indian food that I am not aware of. If someone corrects me, I will add another star. Besides Food, we were greeted promptly right at the moment we entered the restaurant and our glasses were constantly being refilled with water. Good Luck and I will keep on praying for the Beautiful People of Nepal.

EVERYONE BEWARE OF THIS PLACE'S FALSE ADVERTISEMENT ON THEIR WEBSITE!! Kathmandu kitchen claims they serve lunch buffet's 7 days a week!! FALSE!! My brother took me here for my birthday specifically because of their lunch buffet!! We asked one of the servers and he claims they don't serve buffets during weekends and it has always been that way. NOPE! Because my brother went to this restaurant before during their lunch buffet ON A SATURDAY!! Okay, now for my second complaint, they messed up our order. I ordered the Chicken Tandoori obviously comes with Basmati rice and my brother ordered the Mango Chicken that's supposed to come with the set. Instead they served us the mango chicken by itself, my tandoori chicken, with 1 serving of basmati rice. We were halfway done eating before I got fed up and complained to one of the servers. The reason why I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 2 or 1 is because their food is cooked rather well and the place is clean. I've had my fair share of dry tandoori chicken but their's were juicy and on point! Their chicken mango was cooked pretty tasty as well. The food was the only reason I gave this place an extra star. Would I go back to this place? Enh.... I mean food was good but there are plenty of places that are closer and more convenient to go to.

Came here one weekend afternoon for their buffet. At first I was worried; will they have vegan options? Will it be worth the money? Yes and yes. The kind gentleman server notified me what was and what was not vegan. Greatly appreciated! Nearly half the offerings were already vegan which sure made my meal. I tried a bit of everything and surely all of it tasted great! Our server was kind enough to bring us some vegan nann :) Will definitely dine here again~

We had a great experience here last night for dinner. The restaurant was beautiful, the service was good and the food was tasty and wonderfully plated. I followed the advice seen here in reviews and ordered lamb - lamb tikka masala. It was fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Came here with a groupon deal and had some pretty tasty Indian food. At first glance, decor was nice, the mural pretty cool. Service, was okay, nothing stood out as amazing or terrible. The gentleman that came over to us was awesome! We started with the Nepali samosas, very good. Reminded me very much of Indian samosas. The green chutney here was amazing. Goodness gracious. For the entree, my fiancé ordered the lamb kabob thing and I had the chicken vindaloo thali. The thali is great, a few more dollars and you get this huge platter of food. Along with the entree you get rice, naan, chutney, veggies, raita. Mmmmmm. His lamb was okay. He thought it was delicious. I obviously don't like lamb.... Mango lassi!!!! Okay yes.

Best meal I have had in a very long time! I live around the corner off of W and always pass by this place but finally decided to stop in. We were greeted with very friendly and welcoming staff and seated promptly at a table of our choice. Right away I noticed that the menu items had labels distinguishing them from vegan and gluten free which was great for my boyfriend and I! (I am full vegan, he is just dairy free). I ended up getting the vegan thali feast and it was DELICIOUS. So much food and the coolest part was that there was so much variety on my plate! I was full only 1/3 through my plate and now have yummy left overs for tomorrow! At a mere $13 it was so worth it! My boyfriend got the chicken masala and loved it. He raved about the spices and how perfect the rice was cooked. This place is our new favorite and we will definitely be returning!

The Dal Makhani (Black Lentil) soup at the buffet table is worth visiting this restaurant again, at least, for me. It was loaded with so much flavor. I could not believe I had three bowls of it, The other dishes were flavorful as well, but they were average in taste for me. They offer lots of vegetarian dishes, but this is not the place for you if you're watching your weight and health-conscious because everything on my plate was vegetarian, yet it was greasy. Love that oil! Service was just okay. There was not much interaction with the wait staff, except to wave my hand for assistance if my water glass needed a refill and to ask for the check. They did not come around to inquire if you needed a water refill or if you needed anything else. I'll definitely return for that Dal Makhani. Hopefully, service would be better next time.

I love the food the buffet is amazing however the servers tend to be a little oblivious. There was a large group when we sat down and rather than bring us our first first basket of naan bread they brought 2 baskets to the large group. I was half way through my 2nd plate of food before I got any bread.

Love this place. Here's what you do: Get a plate of chicken makhani, vegetable pakora and side of tamarind chutney. Take naan and put chicken makhani and pakora in it. Dip into chutney. Repeat. This is what I plan to do everyday when I retire.

Is it really a bad thing, if I could eat here at least 3 times a week and never suffer from burn out?! I have no trouble finding beyond delicious, healthy, and vegan food during their lunch buffet and on their regular menu. A beautiful green salad with English cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and mint chutney, veggie pakora with my own sweet n spicy chutney creation, and basmati rice are staples on my lunch plate. The veggie entrees vary daily from chana masala, squash curry, eggplant curry, mixed vegetables, and so on. If you're vegetarian, they sometimes have several veggie dishes made with cream. They also have a steam table with 6+ meat dishes, but obviously I could care less about it. It's such a great deal for so much food at $9.99 m-f and $11.99 sat and sun. Oh yes, they have the lunch buffet on weekends! My inner vegan fat kid just squealed with joy. I especially love the vegan thali for dinner!!! It doesn't get any better than basmati rice, veggie momos and veggie Nepalese samosas (there is a difference), 2 vegan curries of their choice, 4 flavorful chutneys, and fresh puri served on a luxurious silver platter. The balance of flavors and the complex spices always make me wonder just what exactly is in their dishes? Culinary crack perhaps? I don't care as long as they're open for business. I've tried and failed at recreating their entrees- why mess with perfection, when you can support a wonderful local business? I have no complaints about the meat and it's possible texture, as it's obviously a non-issue ;-)

First time here with my friend. I got the chicken vindaloo (ordered it to be really spicy, but it was not). My friend ordered chicken tikka masala. And we of course got garlic naan (ordered garlic basil naan, they forgot the basil). Nonetheless, everything was really good!! Cons: parking kinda sucks, they left out my basil, took a long time trying to figure out our groupon & walked off with my friends phone, tables are close together, the little guy behind me bumped the crap out of me when he went to sit down. Pros: food came out fairly quickly, it hit the spot, casual dining, and my favorite....I LOOVE when my water glass stays full and I don't notice them refilling it!!! (That earned a star on its own!) Will definitely go bsck

I stopped here for a late lunch and was not greeted for several minutes. Keep in mind I was the second person in there and the hostess kept setting the tables up. I ordered off the menu because they still had their buffet items sitting out (2pm mind you). Instead of making me fresh food they went to the buffet and scooped it onto a plate for me. The food wasn't very good either.

Great service with good food. The boys seem to enjoy every plate. We love fresh Naan bread. Menu is a bit over welming, so we took the buffet. Everything we tried was good and some things were SPICY. I love it but being we have no ides what we're about to eat it was a crap shoot on the level of heat. I will be back Thank you

We decided to try Kathmandu after we got a groupon offer. Paid and on our way! We were seated quickly, brought water and menus and ordered all within 5 minutes....love that. We ordered a samosa with cheese for an appetizer, and it was pretty good. A little too oily for me, as I thought it was baked, not fried. There were only 6 small pieces. Tasty, but not outstanding. The SO and I like to share, so we ordered the Paleek Paneer ala carte and the Chicken Marsala full entree. LOVED the plate with all the different sides. Unfortunately the sides were "eh". The raita was VERY good, but the dal was tasteless and the curried veggies were SUPER salty. Rice was rice. Naan was decent and hot. The Chicken Marsala was very good, fresh mushrooms in a strong sauce. We asked for medium heat but it was not spicy....it was still very good. The Paleek Paneer, spinach and handmade cheese was good- I ordered this medium and again it was not spicy. However this dish is always good as it is my fave. Given I ordered it ala carte, it came in a small dish with rice. SMALL. Same with the Chicken. SMALL. For the prices, I did expect more. Usually when I get Indian food (and this was clearly Indian, not Himalayan) I have tons to take home. Not here. For $15 a plate I suppose I expect more. We were given the wrong check- which is fine, it happens, and when we explained this and gave them the groupon, the man who was tallying up the checks did not seem happy. In fact, a little grumpy. We got out check back and he had overcharged us. I explained again, and he had to have a discussion with the other server. Groupons: The lifeblood of showcasing a business....getting in new clientele and getting your name out there. Great for us. Apparently not for them. IF you are going to do a groupon, please do not be grumpy when a NEW client brings one. Please. :) Three stars for quick service, good main entrees.

Absolutely mouth watering and delicious! Had the Lamb Tiki Masala, it was perfectly seasoned, creamy and the Lamb was perfectly cooked. Side of rice has veggies mixed in and the naan appetizer was a great addition to the meal! My mouth is already watering just thinking about this meal!

I went with a friend who recommended this place. We were instantly greeted and seated. Simple decor with Indian music playing-I thought it was charming! We ordered the vegetable samosas (the ones with potatoes), upgraded to the garlic cilantro naan and shared the chicken tikka masala and chicken tandoori. Oh my goodness...all of the food was delicious! I loved how they served the chicken tandoori still smoking and sizzling. The chicken tikka masala we ordered medium spicy and it was perfect-probably the best part of the meal. Loved the chutneys that were served with the samosas. Total was $40-we just had water for drinks. Well worth it-food coma!

My wife and I just recently moved into the midtown Sacramento area and were looking forward to trying Katmandhu in hopes of finding a regular Indian/Himalayan restaurant. Sadly, I can't comment on the food. When we arrived, we were seated promptly and given menus and were told by the server that she would be right back to give us water. We never saw her again. In the twenty minutes that followed we watched other tables get seated, watered, and order while nobody came to our table at all. The two servers who seemed to be working were rarely seen. When I did finally catch the eye of one server and tried to call her over, she looked at me, and turned the other way with no indication of whether or not we would see her again soon. So, we left. And we will probably not return. I've heard good things about their food, but the service was so bad I can't imagine giving them my business. I understand that restaurants get busy and that service can slow down, but to have others who arrived after us, and were seated later get water and order while we were completely ignored for nearly half an hour is inexcusable. I'm disappointed.

i forgot the name of what i order, and hey i know a lot of curries has cumin. this was just a little too much for me. i ended up filling up on the garlic basil naan (which was so good). small place so tables are a little close and they do seem busy that might be why the reviews are low based on services. but gave them another try just recently and the lamb vindaloo and the lamb maas were good. i guess when you try new types of food definetly get a couple different things. oh yeah and of course the garlic basil naan is a must.

This place is awesome! The garlic naan is so good. The chicken Masala is freaking incredible. Best I've had. They're also very attentive. The servers made sure our waters were filled at all times. I'll be back to try more dishes for sure.

This place is great as far as flavor goes. Service isnt that great. I Went last night and the hostess forgot to give us our menus for about 10 mins. She was Kind of oblivious actually. Then we ordered an appetizer and specifically said which one and pointed, also asked it to be brought before the dinner... unfortunately she brought the wrong appetizer AND it came right with dinner. Think the language barrier was an issue. Food is a 5 star rating BUT service isnt. But I would highly recommend a to go order! Especially the coconut shrimp curry and chicken Korma.

I really want to give this place 5 stars. My wife and I live nearby and have come here 5 or 6 times. I think it's the best indian food near the grid. We'll continue to come here. The ambience is nice, food great, and MOST of the servers are really friendly. However, the last 2 times we've gone (last time was Thursday, 8/14 in the evening) we've had a middle aged lady serving us that was just incredibly unfriendly. She barely acknowledged us coming in or out, spilled water on the table constantly, got our order wrong and didn't care, and didn't bring things we asked for. This kind of interaction really dampened our mood last night and is definitely part of the dining experience - if you're going to be a server you have to be positive and friendly.

My to-go order was going to take 30 minutes, so I sat in the area by the door. There were a ton of people packed into that space waiting for a table. Here are some of the things I unintentionally overheard: -"Yeaaaa, I wasn't really feeling the kids tonight. We left them a pizza and came out for a nice dinner." -"Remember that Christmas gift ___ gave me? I never really opened it, but I was in a hurry to find a gift for my cousin today, so I gave that gift to her. I wonder what it was..." -"There's a 30% chance I had too much beer." -"I have acquired cash moneys, so it is my prerogative to spend it." -"All the candidates I interviewed today sucked. I wanted to fire all of them, and they weren't even hired yet." It looked like this couple were on a first date, she did not seem impressed by this line. -"Ohh, funny seeing you here. Small world. How's the kids?" followed by awkward silences. I got chicken vindaloo - thali, and some sort of eggplant/peas vege curry. Was all pretty decent. If I hadn't used a groupon, $35 for these dishes would have felt a little steep given size/taste. Speaking of groupon, I did not appreciate how the guy who greeted me took my phone out of my hand (without asking) to the backroom for literally 10 minutes to see if I could use it. Smartphones these days kind of have personal info, yo, so don't take my ish

by definition of 2-stars, "Meh, I've experienced better." Better = the same restaurant but the location in davis, ca. the service was very good, friendly staff and helpful. However, the curries and the chicken momos we ordered were significantly under-par from the David location.... Momo's were smaller and not as flavorful, and the curries were the exact same orders as in David, but not nearly as tasty.... not sure why....

Delicious vegetable korma (probably the best I've ever had) & chicken breast skewers. Do NOT try the lunch buffet. After enjoying dinner here many times, we were shocked at how horrible the food was on the buffet. We have friends who have expressed the same thing & we just can't figure it out. They must have 2 different cooks?!? I'm also bothered that the female server has been wearing a very stained/dirty shirt each time. I understand that curry stains. So, probably not a good idea to wear white if you serve curry every day!

So the I arrived at 1:30, not lunch rush but still a time the place should be prepped for lunch. The buffet was poorly stocked, which would allow me the opportunity to try everything fresh and honestly the food was ok. Not life changing but far from poor. The service is slow, apparently there was only one cook who was managing both the buffet and individual orders. Now I can question the business sense of this latter but just expect dish changes to be latter than usual. Also the staff while pleasant were far from prompt and seemed irritated about my asking for their drink menu. To further confuse they were happy to fill my water bottle for the road. So honestly as far as service goes, it was inconsistent. They could improve by smoothing out the bad and maintaining the good. The food was also ok-tasty but obviously very heavy. The chicken Marsala was the stand out-great buttery/tomato flavor. The chicken was also very tender, across all their dishes. The chicken curry was also good, and the lamb as well. Both contained bones for flavor. The saag paneer was interesting. Pretty good flavor but puréed to baby food consistency. It was good but I prefer more chewiness. Previous yelpers complained about slow naan, but mine was acceptable. All in all it was a decent experience.

A few friends and I decided we should get Indian food for lunch and ended up getting a really good groupon for this place. We came on a rainy Monday afternoon, so there were only 2 other tables with people at them. We ordered the vegetarian Himalayan appetizer plate, the chole (garbanzo) soup, and the vegan thali. We all agreed that the garbanzo soup was a little on the salty side, but everything else was perfect and delicious!

This quaint restaurant boasts a great vegetarian and vegan menu as well as many gluten free options. The day time buffet is not a huge variety, but is well priced and offers a good mix of veggie and meat choices. For the price I think this is one of the best Indian restaurants in the region.

We used to love this place and it was easily a 5 in my book. We are from Stockton and we would drive just to come here. It was our favorite Indian food. The last time we came in May we were really disappointed. None of the dishes we normally ordered looked or tasted the same. They must have new cooks or ownership. Disappointing. Well looks like Dhaba in Tracy has moved into the #1 spot in our list for Indian Food.

I had excellent service and the waiter acknowledged us quite a bit and refilled our waters. :) I had the lamb tikka masala, being that I am a huge tikka masala fan... I purchased a Groupon to try this place out and I've been back twice. Me and my BF have tried 4 different curries, thali style and we enjoyed it both times. The decor is very nice inside. We always request our curries to be spicy and they gladly accomodate. It is very spicy, just how we like it. Thali style is a little more expensive but it's so worth it. You get curry, 2 veggie sides, rice, naan, soup and this cucumber flavored white dipping sauce. Unfortunately, we too had the middle aged lady server that everyone else is complaining about, who seemed angry with the world lol but it didn't phase us too much. We liked the food and she wasn't incredibly rude..where we wouldn't come back. Just get the Groupon, then the lack of customer service might not seem too bad hahah because the food is actually really good!

We went in a large group around 6pm and made reservations for 15 people. The service was super slow. And when we received our meals an hour later. On top of that food was horrible and almost everyone got sick eating the food for the next couple of days. The restaurant uses too much food coloring.

Came to this place based on reviews and wanted to venture out a bit from my regular Indian food place. The atmosphere was nice, the place partially full. I ordered some soup, and chicken marsala. The soup came and looked like yellow water, nothing was in the bowl but this broth, I ordered lentil soup. It tasted like curry water, bland. I mentioned to the server that my soup was missing its lentils he took the bowl and retured with maybe 15 lentils floating around. I took a few bites and put it aside. The entre came and it was sparce compared to the restaurants I have ate at like this. The naan was extra, i ordered some, the chicken was not what i expected the flavors were some how off. Not delicate and complex but runny not thick and lacking the standard flavors that this dish requires. The rice was plain, but done. I was hopeful and feeling explorative when I started out, i left feeling disappointed and hungry. I had my leftovers packed up to give away to the homeless man i saw outside. Would I suggest going? No. Am I going back? No. Will I continue to explore? Yes. :) I have tried allot of Indian food places, if food can be Americanized maybe this is the india version of that. I seek authentic and real. This just disnt hit the mark.

So we were excited to try nepalese food for the first time. Turns out its Indian food. We still had a great time and the food was delicious. Also, when you tell them you want it spicy, not white boy "spicy", they really bring it.

When you think of himalayan/ Indian cuisine, your first thought is mouth-watering, flavorful cuisine. I got everything but that. The food was bland.

My husband is a Brit which means we are on a constant hunt for a mean curry. After getting a Restaurant.com gift certificate, we decided to try Kathmandu Kitchen and I am glad we did. I very much enjoyed our time there and will be going back soon. Drinks: He had a Flying Horse that looked ice cold and delicious and I had a Lemon Drop. Although it was made with some kind of wine, I assume because there isn't a full bar, it was just what the doctor ordered. Cool, tangy and strong - yum! Apps: We did the Himalayan platter and were very pleased. The chutneys there are amazing and super fresh. I loved the little samosas (despite the complaints of a tragically hip, ironically mustachioed man behind us about how they weren't "real" samosas) and the crispy vegetable pakoras. Dinner: I had the Chicken Hariyali and it was superb! My husband had the vegetarian biryani. Although he said it was delicious, they initially had to remake it because they made it with lamb. No harm no foul. Dessert: This is why there is only four stars. We ordered the kulfi, which was fine and the gulab jamun which was frozen and hard as a rock. It was just weird because we have never been served gulab jamun that way and it robbed the yummy little balls of flavor and texture. Overall, we really loved the food and will be back!

Good hot soup. Very tasty and authentic flavor. Hot food ready as promised. Very good servings too. Cooking from the heart is the best food to have.

I went to Kathmandu Kitchen on a Sunday evening with my family. The food was absolutely amazing! Some of the best Indian food in Sacramento. I had the Chicken Chau Chau medium spicy which is Tibetan style noodles pan-fried with chicken and vegetables. The service was good, there were a few times that we ran out of water but for the most part they were on it! Good music, good environment, I would definitely go back! They were even nice enough to split up the bills for our group!

I remember this place tasting better back when I first tried it. But after last night I don't think I'll be coming back. It's really overpriced for the amount of food you get and quality is not all there. The nan bread is on the thicker side and not as light as it should be. Food also didn't come out looking fresh or hot. Flavor wise it was decent, but overall was really disappointed. Won't be trying this place again.

Food is very good. The lunch buffet is very very good, food is so yummy and fresh and the price is good. $12 buys you all you can eat and it's available 7 days a week. The one downfall, the staff was very rude. They seemed bothered to even fill your water and I'm pretty sure didn't say one word to us the entire time we were in there. Good thing I was too busy eating to be overly bothered by their insolence.

#Sacramento This is an update ( I gave 5 Stars Before).. I came in to my favorite Indian Restaurant for lunch (all you can eat buffet). It was around 2 PM and the place was clearing out. I ended up being the only one in the restaurant The service couldn't be worse. I waited and waited for water, utensils, napkins, and the Nan arrived after I ate .. the waitress and manager couldn't be ruder! I believe they are lovers and they had a big fight. I gave it 2 stars because it was a cheap and delicious meal even though the service sucked! I gave them a twenty for $15 dollar meal and the manager comes out and asks me in sort of angered tone "Do you want change?" .. I said no .. but I should have said yes and left no tip! They certainly didn't deserve one! .. I have a gut feeling this place is on it's way out! ... I will scarf the all you can eat food and leave no tips until it happens ..

Decided to try Kathmandu after I got a groupon. The restaurant is on the smaller side and quite homey. As a vegetarian with vegan tendencies, this place a so many options! I now bring all my vegan friends here and they love it as well. I brought a relative here who has never had Indian food. Needless to say there were LOTS of questions. The staff was very helpful in helping her make her pic. Bottom Line: IT'S GREAT!

If you're going to eat Indian food in Sacramento, do it here. The food is seriously delicious and they are pretty accommodating. We made last minute reservations for a large group and they were ready for us. The service was a little slow/spotty, but definitely friendly and the food was just incredible. Best Indian in Sacramento- there's a certain other popular Indian restaurant in Midtown where I had an unpleasant and unsanitary experience, so I needed to find another good Indian restaurant- THIS is the ONE.

I ate here recently on September 28th on a Saturday afternoon with my family. As a long-time customer, I wasn't impressed with their buffet choices and this was on a Saturday afternoon which didn't have any traffic in customers. They've always prided themselves in having a rich selection of buffet choices. But this selection wasn't impressive and, at $13.00 a head, was rather costly. There were some positives: The naan bread was good as usual; as were the chicken kebobs, the selection of sauces and the basmati rice. But beyond that, the rest of the buffet was lacking. The chicken pakoras were never refilled on the buffet for the entire time we were there. The chicken and lamb curry looked watery, and the lentils didn't look appetizing. The waiter was friendly and attentive to our needs. But when the bill was $39.00 for a family of three, no drinks, just the buffet. I was expecting much more out of Kathmandu Kitchen than this recent visit. Not a bad experience, by any means, but I left feeling disappointed.

I was craving Indian Food on Sunday and we were lazy so we decided to try Kathmandu once more. We ordered: the cilantro and garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, and butter chicken, all medium spicy. Everything was just ok. Absolutely nothing stands out about my culinary experience here. It's just blah. It's not bad, but it's not good either...average. We both found that the medium spicy is not spicy in the least. If I had any intention of returning, I would definitely ask for it much spicier, but I don't think the spice level should be the saving grace of the food. It's really just ok... I wish I had more to say to give future diners some direction, but I don't. Just be aware that you won't be impressed, and know going in that you might be totally unhappy, but there's a chance you'll be somewhat satisfied. Put it this way, its Wednesday-three days after I last had Indian food from Kathmandu, and I'm still craving Indian. I'm heading to Royal India at lunch. Hopefully that will suffice my craving for awhile. Sorry Kathmandu....I gave you two chances... you're just not impressive.

I am a big fan of the lunch buffet! The food is always consistent and tasty and the service is always good. I use to hate Indian food and because of kathmandu I now love it. They have a variety of vegetarian options which from what I have tried are all tasty! I have always been happy with my lunch and dinner and would definitely go again!

I had the "House" curried lamb (Rajahstan, I think?) with the side dishes It came out on a metal tray with the different sauces in various compartments to keep them separate. It was also served with nan bread. The lamb was very red...kind of an overt food-coloring hue, I think. Aside from looking very bright, the lamb curry was delicious! Very good flavors with all of the sauces. I wll have to come back and try more of the selections on the menu.

We usually go to Bombay because it's close to our house and we LOVE it. Kathmandu Kitchen was voted best Indian in Sac, so we thought we'd try it out. If it got voted higher than our beloved Bombay, it must be good. We also had a groupon. Well, after eating there, we decided it's NOT better than Bombay. It wasn't bad, I ate my food, enjoyed it. It was quiet in there. That's one thing I like about Bombay is the Indian music they play and belly dancers on the weekends. The service was fine. I'm surprised about all of the service comments because we didn't have a problem there. We just prefer our local Indian restaurant. It might be different if we hadn't already been established there though.

Just got back from dinner at Kathmandu with my in-laws. The food was pretty good. The lamb tikka masala, lamb sekuwa, lal maas, coconut curry shrimp were pretty tasty. I ordered the kitchen special, which is a lamb dish, and that was really tasty. The garlic naan and the garlic naan was good too. BUT, WE WAITED OVER AN HOUR TO GET OUR FOOD AFTER ORDERING. OVER ONE HOUR. MORE THAN SIXTY MINUTES. The table that got seated directly before us received their food, ate it all, paid, and left, before we got our food. We had a party of 5. Smaller parties who got seated AFTER us received their food before us. All this is not okay. At all. I wanted to leave a 10 cent tip with a nice little note. But my pops-in-law is a way kinder soul than I am. So he left them 10%. Summary: food was pretty good, waited TOO LONG to eat, won't be coming back here again. Ever. In the time that we waited, I can learn, buy groceries, and make my own food. Jk kinda.

Okay, let me just say that the Kathmandu Kitchen popped my gastronomic cherry back in high school and I have been a faithful girlfriend ever since. Even when they temporarily shut their doors for a few months after an untimely kitchen fire, I drove to their Davis loction rather than settling for a mediocre alternative. Their dishes have always been like a surprise party in my mouth-- jolting my tastebuds with unexpected greetings of corriander and cumin and rollicking about my belly until the wee hours of the morning. So I kind of felt like a dejected kitten when we went this last time and had many a complaint. My gal and I started off strong with a steadfast favorite, the Mango Lassi and enjoyed every sip of its creamy brilliance. After that, it was all downhill. The Mixed Appetizer platter vacillated between not being cooked thoroughly and being scant and awkward to divide between two. (And! It was not served with that spicy sauce that completes the amazing trio of sweetness from the tamarind dip, coolness from the mint dressing and the delicate fire of said missing sauce.) I could go on about how the Chicken Tikka was flavorless and univiting to the palate and the Alu Tikka was basically just a fried mush of potato, but I'd rather move on to crushing blow that was the Lal Maas. Where the Lal Maas is usually a graceful balance of creamy spice and tender resplendency, it was just plain cold, thus compromising all the warm and wonderful flavors of the dish. The basmati it was served with was crunchy and the naan was dull and lifeless, like a bad hair day. The last saving grace, the Salmon Tandoori, was deceptively disappointing. Where it came out crackling and hot, teasing our nostrils with notes of onion and garlic, it did not live up to its olfactory taunting. The chunks of salmon were fatty, lined with silvery flanks of skin and plumped around stringy bits of bone. So after separating the edible meat from all the adipose glut, I found myself completely turned off from eating all together. And don't even get me started on the customer service. They pretty much neglected us after our meal was served, but at least we didn't have to awkwardly fish for a polite reason as to why I would not be needing a take home container. I'm not about to break up with this place. I still have a warm place in my heart from all of the yum my tongue has known from the folks at Kathmandu. But I'm not going to spread my wallet anymore until something changes.

I have to start off by saying that I'd rather give this place a 3.5 stars rather than 3 stars as I really enjoyed dining at this restaurant. We ordered the chicken manori (sp?) and curry cauliflower vegetable dish as well as a jumpo appetizer. I really wanted to try their homemade cheese to which I was disappointed because it didnt' taste like anything at all! Ugh. But, the entree's and ofcourse the naan quickly made up for that. We loooooooved the chicken manori, sorry I am mispelling it, but its basically roasted chicken and in a red cream sauce. It was pure heaven. Parking can be a bit hard around this area as its restricted to street parking only. I can't wait to return to this place when I'm fiending for some Indian food. Truly a cool neighborhood joint.

I hate to do this since I'm tight with some restaurant managers but I think they're masters when it comes to creamy sauces. Very good food. My only gripe (if that) would be the smaller servings they prepare. Some places overwhelm with extra rice and naan, what I'm talking about is in the area of meat dishes: chicken tikka masala, vindaloo, and whatnot. I wish they'd provide more meat for the prices they charge. Just saying! Otherwise it's a good respite from the usual.

Wonderful food. We were a decent sized group with vegans and meat eaters and we all left full. There was an issue redeeming a groupon that never got resolved. While the table service was good our server was not interested in helping solve the payment problem

I visited here for lunch the other day because of a Groupon that was expiring. So glad I bought that one! When I stepped inside, I was taken away from the busy-ness of Broadway into a jewelled world of beauty! Even the young Indian waitress was like a princess. Very precious. She steered me into what I should order and was right on! I don't know what I had :) but it was delightful! Sauces were smooth and creamy. Meat was tender and flavorful. Sides were perfectly prepared. The whole plate was colorful and wonderful. I will return and bring friends! It is a lot of food for the price! I think of Indian food as overly greasy for my personal taste, but this definitely was not.

I usually am nervous about Indian food because of how spicy things can get but this food was perfect. The waiter asked if we wanted mild medium or spicy and our table ranged in answers but everyone was pleased with the level of spice. Definately recommend this place for everyone.

Visited Kathmandu a couple Saturdays ago for dinner. The server taking our order was extremely RUDE! Luckily, the gentleman and lady that brought us our food and drinks were friendly. Everything on the menu was double, some even triple the price of regular Indian food. So we figured that the food must be really good for them to charge these extreme prices. We ordered 10 dishes from the menu. Most were recommendations from our server. We also ordered regular naan, potato naan, garlic naan and the appetizer sample (whatever it was called, included samosas), The appetizers were good, the regular naan and garlic naan was ok, the potato naan was really good! Out of the 10 dishes we ordered most of them were just okay, a couple dishes were not so good and there was one that I really liked, the Vindaloo (the chicken was cooked perfectly and the semi-spicy sauce complimented it well). IF, and I repeat, IF I ever go there again, I probably will only order the Vindaloo and the potato naan. Prices are a little too high for what they have to offer. If you get a chance, go to SF to try Indian food. There are many many restaurants that serve way better food for half the price! =)

Kind of in the ghetto area, but really good food and good service. The people we're nice. Price is not bad. About $10-12 for the ala carte items (which come with Rice) and $14-16 for the whole meal.

Dream meal from KK (the descriptions come straight off their menu): -a glass of Taj Mahal. -vegetable pakora appetizer (order extra tamarind chutney): Crisp fritters of spinach, cauliflower, and onion in chickpea flour served with a tamarind and mint sauce. -mughlia saag: Sauteed spinach, garlic, and ginger cooked with herbs and spices and served with goat cheese. -garlic basil naan: White bread with garlic and basil baked in a clay pot. oh hell yes. this is such a great combination of flavors. i find the vegetarian dishes much more pleasing to the palate than the meat dishes. which is not to say the meat dishes are bad. sometimes there are some bones to pick out but the taste is amazing. these dishes are so beautiful to look at even - deep red tamarind chutney, light green mint sauce, yellow curried chicken.. mmm hmm. the people are always very nice and they don't bother you while you're eating. it's a nice place to go on a date when you want to spend time talking to the person you are with. the lunch buffet is a great deal. i took it to go.. loaded up a box full of food and i had it for lunch, then the leftovers for dinner. you can't beat that. i feel bad for those reviewers that had less-than-great experiences here. i have never had a bad experience. it's true their service is a little slow, but i find i enjoy the time to sit back, relax, and actually talk to the person with whom i am dining.

Good Indian food, I'd recommend trying this place. Fairly small restaurant in Downtown, good service... prices are ok. The Saffron Chicken was amazing, as well as the naan. However, some of the side dishes tasted microwaved and not as fresh as it could be, but it was still good.

Amazing Indian Food! They recently remodeled to a lovely modern decor and I'm diggin' it. I walked in and did a triple take but then smelled the food and realized I was in the right place. BEST CHICKEN MAKHANI EVER! And I have had it all over. I dare to say even better than homemade (gasp). The buffet rocks and they got me in there with a coupon from the Sac News and Review and I actually haven't seen one since. So kudos to them on the advertising!

One of my favorite Indian places but I came here last week and it was closed. A closer look at the window showed the health department shut it down because of some sort of .... well, lets just call it "problem". No matter. I came back this week. My friends said, the health department wouldn't have allowed them to reopen unless they were REALLY REALLY clean!!! It was good but not spectacular. I'll be back nonetheless.

The food at Kathmandu makes me think of sensible shoes...Wednesdays...singer-songwriters...mourning doves. Solid, but not outstanding. Middle of the road. Nice, but...kind of blah. This applies to food, service, and decor. That said, they have lots of love for the vegans, and the vegan thali is a tasty assortment of different animal-part-free dishes. The vegan/vegetarian offerings are more extensive than at many other curry joints in Sac. Our picks: The naan has always been good--and adding cilantro to it is a nice touch. Sometimes the momos are delicately steamed, and sometimes they turn out a bit rubbery. We usually are pleased with the navratan korma (though sometimes the sauce is a bit thick) and the channa masala (that you can get it with spinach--saag--added is a bonus). Kind of like the rest of Broadway--Taste of Thai, Chada, Tower Cafe--the food here is decent, but not spectacular.

We shared the kadai lamb and a bowl of the multani soup. Lamb was nice. Not overcooked, the vegetables still had some snap and it was spicy enough for both of us. The multani soup was creamy and delicious! Naan was ok, but a little chewy for me. The service however was sooooooooo slooooooow. Not that it was busy, it just seemed like the guy didn't know what he was doing. That backs it down to 3 stars.

We think the food is delicious, but the service is sub par. The first time we went and I ordered wine. But the wine taste like it had been opened too long - like it was a few days old. The secord (or third) time the waiter forgot are naan bread. And all of our visits, the service was slow. But we keep coming back because the food is so good!

went here a few days b4 my groupon ran out and took a friend - i had raved about the buffet I had experienced a year ago and figured the food would be the same quality for dinner. It wasn't. - and, it was overpriced for what you got - even with the groupon. worse, it came on some type of metal prison tray, which i could not understand since you are paying 15 to 17 for an entree. My lamb dish was a few measly pieces over powered in a gloppy red curry sauce- same which my friends chicken. He also bit into a hug cardamom pod that had been left in a potato dish and also found some type of hard shell in it which, by that time, we didn't even bother telling the waitress. The nan was good, the service was also - so 2 stars. Maybe they have changed owners or because they knew we had a groupon the quality was sub-par. probably won't be back - there are many other Indian restaurants to try.

I do love Kathmandu Kitchen - great selection of Indian food, and some takeout is always in order whenever I am out of food/too lazy to cook. Their palack paneer is to die for! The only thing I'll say is that it's great for takeout, not necessarily dining in. Service is sub-par, and the atmosphere leaves some to be desired. However, it's still great to pop in and pick up a hot, spicy order to go!

First restaurant I ate at, first night in Sacramento. Tried to hit up the Ethiopian place down the street but it was closed. Thankfully, Kathmandu Kitchen was I was pretty solid Plan B. Had the veggie thali- daal, chana masala, samosas, momos, kheer, rice, and naan for $10.95 (also available vegan). Everything was on point- the daal and chana masala were simple but well prepared and satisfying. The samosas and momos were exceptional, as were the fresh, flavorful accompanying chutneys. Might even have been 5 stars if it wasn't for our server's annoying up-selling attempts at every opportunity. The quality was great though, and I will definitely be back.

yeah, mmmm yummy. the food, for sure. first time there. but wait, they didn't bring any napkins! wha...?! the naan made me smile. then i remembered reading reviews of this spot like two years ago and swearing i would try it. never made it til less than a week ago. better late than never! I should mention that I ate the special, shrimp with asparagus. It was not too oily, not too spicy (I took "medium" spiciness), not too garlicky, and not too mouth-hot. It was just right. And they did not give too much rice. I hate when places do that.

Had dinner here tonight. Saturday night, was a wait for bigger tables but for 2 they sat us right away. He ordered Chef Table (lamb) special Thali and I ordered prawn tiki masala Thali. Both were very good, constant water refills and prompt service. Would definitely go again!

Tamarind sauce is very good!! Apps: Chicken momos (chicken dumplings) OMG so good!! 5++ Entree: Get the meal on the metal plate! Such a deal Chicken Tikka Masala is Very good...my favorite in Sacramento. Aloo potato with egg plant is amazing Naan was very good! Unfortunately the mango lassee was not good.... too tart and not enough mango or sweet. Mint chutney was not the best. Over all very good!!! This is my new Indian to go to in Sac!

Excellent waitstaff and inexpensive food. As we waited for our table we were nicely acknowledged by various members of staff as they went by. The wait time was about 30 mins but it was understandable as they were busy and it was 7pm on Valentine's Day. After being seated we ordered several items off the dinner menu and they all came out in huge portions. I decided to try something new so I had the saffron chicken which I found great and just the right temperature. I also tried the appetizer platter and they were all so delicious! Although the servers seemed a little stressed by the extremely busy night, it never effected their service, refills were plentiful, and they continued to check up on us throughout the evening. I'd definitely return to Kathmandu for their attentive waitstaff, inexpensive food, and nice ambience.

Minus a star because my main course wasn't my fave. I very much enjoy Indian food. I usually go for the chicken dishes, but this time I branched out and tried the prawn vindaloo. It was okay... Just a little too fishy for me. Everything else was amazing! Especially their pea and potato empanadas with cilantro and plum? Sauce. Drool. I tried a bite of my friends chicken tikka masala and wow!!! So impressed! So much flavor. So creamy and the chicken perfectly cooked. I will definitely be back to get my own course of that! Be sure to get the full dinner so you can try all the yummy side dishes (mostly, if not all vegetarian)... And the naan! ahh craving me some Kathmandu now!

Came here because we got a groupon and its close to home. Only 2 other tables occupied when we got there, one with very loud (later crying in "time out"-- seriously who does that at a restaurant) children. Not the Katmandu's fault, but did not give the best first impression. Nor did the completely disinterested owner using his laptop at one of the tables. Ordered our standards - Aloo Gobi, Vegetable Pakora, Palak Paneer, Baigan Bharta, Dal Makhani, Raita and Naan. I forgot to ask for the raita to come with the appetizers, so I asked the woman who brought them out. She didn't bring it. Had to flag down the waiter (who was MIA for a few minutes in the meantime) so we were more than 1/2 way through the appetizers by the time it came. When the entrees came out, I realized that our waiter didn't ask how spicy we wanted the food, so it was not spicy at all. Borderline sweet. Also, even though each entree comes with rice, the waiter only gave us one rice initially, then reluctantly gave us the 2nd rice, and was a little annoyed when we asked for the 3rd to pack up our leftovers. The food was nothing special, and the service left a lot to be desired. With a lot of other great options around, we won't be back.

Food was really good, my only gripe is the price and portion size. Service was good, but their price to portions ratio is what would keep me from coming back. Their chicken tikki masala was really good because you can order the level of spiciness! Their non-vegetarian appetizer mix was pretty good! I liked the different sauces that came with it.

I love the lunch buffet at Katmandu! i try to stay away but I have to go at least once every couple of months. The customer service is excellent and the buffet comes with fresh nann with garlic and glistening with butter. The buffet is small but offers the best Indian staples from pakora to vegetable biriyani to chana masala, chicken masala and tandoori chicken. All are wonderful and I always feel fat and happy when I leave. It's $10 for a lunch buffet. Definitely a good price for the quality of the food and customer service that is provided.

Changed and not for the better. Room temp chewy naan and about 20% of the selection of dishes it used to have. What happened? I actually really liked the saag and some other veg dishes, but most changes not for the better.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I felt like I had to for this place because it just simply impressed me that much. My girlfriend and I love indian food, and we especially love a good Indian lunch buffet. I'm new to Sac and haven't found my "go-to" Indian food spot yet, and this place is near me so we figured let's try it. BEST. DECISION. EVER. They had a HUGE variety of different things, and ALL of them were delicious! (Trust me I tried every single item they had out) most lunch buffets I've been to just have the basics, a good veggie curry, the butter chicken, and some samosas, etc. this place has a huge variety of all sorts of different things, not just the traditional "cheaper" items they can afford to cook in mass for buffets. And it's $12.99, which seems normal but for the quality of the food they put out its a deal!!!! (I'm a cheap college kid but I had no problem paying that for this food!) A P.S, the owner was such a super nice guy too, he was out cleaning after guests and talking with everyone. You can tell he has a passion for his food and he wants people to enjoy it. Try this place. I'm DEFINITELY GOING BACK!

This place was horrible for several reasons. 1. They didn't have an air conditioner so when we went it was actually hotter in the restaurant than it was outside. 2. We took in a groupon and they had no idea what to do with it. (Why offer a groupon if you don't know how they work?) 3. They decided that they'd charge us additional fees because we used the groupon even though their page said nothing about additional fees. 4. The food was bleh at best. I've had some GOOD indian food and this was not it. The portion sizes were small for what you pay for it and the flavor really lacked. I had the Lamb Tikka Masala and while the lamb was perfectly tender the sauce just didn't taste right. 5. They were incredibility slow. (Probably due to our drama with the groupon though. Overall though, I'd not recommend this place. The issue with the groupon alone was enough to say avoid them. We left a tip, but it was much smaller due to them insisting on charging us a "service charge". I admit it was a difficult situation because there was a definite language barrier between my group of 4 and the server and owner, but the experience is just not worth the extra money and effort spent.

This is my new favorite indian restaurant. I love the food and they make it spicy when you ask for spicy - no, not american spicy...I am talking about indian spicy! The wait for the food was long and they forgot to bring one of our dish but I will be forgiven and give them 4 stars. Indian food was fabulous! Napalese..hm..

I was dismayed to read some of the other recent (negative) posts from fellow Yelpers. I haven't tried the buffet, but typically a buffet is a buffet, is a buffet. This is a really quaint little restaurant on a very busy street. They offer a limited number of parking spaces in a nearby lot, but it's mostly street parking. We've eaten at Kathmandu on a number of occasions, and have never been disappointed. We've used a Groupon with no problem, and when we've ordered, have always been asked whether we want our food mild, medium or spicy, so don't understand what's up. Perhaps just an off-day/night, or even just a really busy day/night. Regardless the food always comes out hot and tasty and in good portions. Did I say tasty? I do mean tasty! Food presentation is always lovely, and service while not of the uber perfect, has always been decent and friendly. I love the onion naan, have tried just about every app, and enjoyed every one of them, although I'm not a fan of paneer - it's not that it's bad, I've just cut out most cheese from my diet. Again, everything we've ever ordered, shared and brought home was delicious. This place is usually very busy - at least that's been the case when we visit, so to me that's a good sign of what the establishment tends to offer...decent service and delicious food...hellz yeah I'll be back!

Loved the ambiance, our kind waiter, and the absolutely delicious food. I had a roasted eggplant entree, Thali style (which means it comes with naan, rice, dal, vegetables, and a chutney I think), and my husband had a chicken entree. I loved all the flavors on my plate, and appreciated the variety since my main dish was quite rich. And my husband's chicken was amazing. Amazing. I took a risk on getting a Groupon for this restaurant since the yelp reviews seemed quite mixed, but either KK is taking the less positive reviews seriously and is working to make changes, or those reviews were from an off night or something. This was the best restaurant meal we've had in a long time, and I look forward to returning.

Came for the lunch buffet during the weekend. It was good. I don't ever like lamb, but Kathmandu has changed my mind. I don't know if the options vary on the weekends, but when I went they had curry fish, curry lamb, chicken tandoori, and curry chicken. It was all good, but I was hoping for butter chicken or chicken tika masala. They had some other items, but they were not labeled. One thing about the chicken dishes is that the bones break off into little pieces. Probably not good to bring kids. My bf and I spent a lot of time getting little shards of bone out of our mouth. Naan bread took a long time to order and each time they bring you 1 piece per person. Then it takes another 20-30 minutes to get more. Service wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't horrendous or anything.

Absolutely LOVE this place! Whenever I'm in the mood for Indian, I come here! Their lunch buffet has several options, at a decent price. When you ask for spicy, they make it so! The only thing that I can say needs work is their customer service......it's hit or miss depending on the day :/

This used to be my go to place when I needed a lamb curry fix. That is no longer the case. I know lamb is not a cheap meat, and I do expect less meat in a lamb curry versus a chicken curry. But when I extract all the pieces of lamb, only to find 9 tiny cubes (8 of which could not be seen at first glance) then I feel cheated. But, what really rubbed salt in the wound, the lamb had been so over cooked that all of that wonderful lamb taste and texture was completely gone and unrecognizable. It very well could have been mystery meat, but it didn't taste or smell like lamb. Maybe things would have been different if I didn't use a restaurant.com certificate, but I feel like if you are going to treat your customers differently based on the tender they use, then stop accepting that tender! However, this restaurant is always on Groupon, restaurant.com , living social and other discount websites and shows no sign of stopping. And I love that they offer those deals, I just don't like being treated like a second class customer because of them.

It's really hard to find a inexpensive take out place for Indian food. I used to love going to Matis because it was cheap, and you could get a lot of food. But once they closed down, I wasn't eating Indian at all... Until I had take out from this place last night. My boyfriend and I love good food but we don't like to spend an arm and a leg. At this place, we were able to order chicken curry with rice and a side of naan. We haven't had this place before so just to be safe we order a second nan. This place knows what's up, on flavor, nan, and serving size. We were given enough rice, and enough chicken curry for the both of us, and we didn't need the second order of naan! Because the naan is a great size that you can share with two people. The flavor of the chicken curry was spicy but not overwhelming, the chicken itself was tender and it came with huge pieces. The rice was yummy, and the plain nan bread was wonderful This Indian place is a hidden gem! If your going to Bombay, or Monsoon you are missing out. We got all of our food for, $14.50.

What a great atmosphere! It was a pleasurable experience coming here. The food was delicious; I ordered the Kadai chicken extra spicy thali. The plate was huge! Unfortunately I couldn't finish the meal. Despite this, I had a great dining experience and I'll be coming here again!

Awe-some! I am so glad my friend took me to this place! The server was very nice and the food was so f***n good! The lamb vindaloo was a lot of food, and it was really good! Even the left overs were awesome, I am definitely a fan!

I had an ok experience the first time I went, but last week was terrible. When my friend and I walked in, the waitress looked at us but continued to do other things. When she finally seated us she seemed annoyed. We sat without menus for a long time until I asked for them, and even then she took her time first, doing other things. When we were ready to order we set our menus as the end of the table. She walked by several times until I finally gave her the eye. Then she was annoyed that we didn't order more. The food came pretty quickly and tasted great. The man that was working seemed to appreciate us and asked how we were, until it came time to pay the bill. After, waiting a long time our empty plates were picked up. I asked the waitress for our check and this time she disappeared. I took the opportunity to use the bathroom, thinking the check would be there when I got back. Nope. Fed up but still friendly, we went to the counter to pay. He said he was about to bring it and was waiting until I came back to the table. We asked for change so that we could pay separately. He seemed ok to do so but then said, "You can work it out now. I have people to help. I don't want them to think I am not helping them." We found it very rude considering the type of service we were given the whole time. Why didn't he want to help us for one more minute? Why were we less important than the other customers? So sad! Like I said the food was good, but not worth the price and service.

We were seated and not looked at or acknowledged for the 13 minutes we spent thereafter. After waiting 4 minutes we got up and grabbed our own menus. Looked longingly at the staff that would rush thinking they would come back, but they never returned. It was not packed, there was a fair amount of people though. The least you should be given a menu and ice water to sooth the soul. Went here once before with a Groupon and the food was good. The Himalayan iced tea is not recommend unless you like heavy creamer, I mean straight up in a glass heavy creamer . I had high hopes, don't think I will be going back. Pooja in W. Sacto is the bomb though.

This is only the second Indian restaurant I've tried and I was not that impressed. It was recommended by friends. My husband and I went today (Saturday) at around 11:30 for the buffet. I thought what a great time to go because the food would be fresh and not too many people there yet. Some of the food seemed like it was reheated from the day before and there wasn't a crowd at all. Only one other table was taken. Also, there didn't seem to be very many choices for a buffet. The flavor of the dishes was just ok. It was nice to have fresh naan bread delivered to our table however, it came a little too late and tasted a bit like pizza crust. We had to ask for water every time. Our waitress didn't seem to interested in waiting on anyone. We were disappointed with the entire experience.

Ambiance is nice. Great service. Wanted to try something new so decided to check out Kathmandu. Used a Restaurant.com certificate ---- food was good, reasonably priced. The kathmandu jumbo appetizer platter was a good sample to share... I had the chicken chilli. Just the right amount of spice. Yum! Came with basmati rice... a few of the members of our party ordered the plates and thought afterward that they would be satisfied with the a la carte orders...

Once seated it took a long time before anyone brought us water. Took a long time for papadam to arrive, which they charge for at this place. The food is pretty good. The waitress was new and did not explain what we were ordering correctly. We were overcharged but the owner or manager corrected the bill for us. I like the decor & design. I will go back and try it again.

I really like this place. Their food is great. I used to love going to Mahti's before they closed, but I easily see difference in quality between that type of spot and Kathmandu Kitchen. I haven't been to the buffet yet, but I'm sure you get a good value there. It might seem a little pricey for dinner based on the portions you get, but it's really plenty of food. Order up some garlic and cilantro naan and you're good.

The Good: -Food is authentic. The Bad: -Temperature of food served was not hot. -Messy guests prior to us --so we sat in table that had food all over floor. -Service is slow like molasses. Unfortunately, will not visit again.

The hubby and I have been wanting to try this place since we moved to Land Park and finally stopped in today for their lunch buffet. We were the only people in the restaurant, which is obviously not a good sign. We seem to have gotten the unfriendly woman server mentioned in other posts - she was extremely cold and barely said 2 words to us. The food was just ok. I am by no means a connoisseur of Indian cuisine, but, honestly, the Indian food at Whole Foods is way tastier and healthier than this place. I'm glad we finally gave it a try, but I think we will take our business to restaurants with better service and tastier food.

We enjoyed excellent food in a clean and attractive dining room. The service was attentive, friendly and helpful. The food arrived quickly and our water glasses were refilled often. I had the Vegetarian Kormu --- awesome!!! He had a lamb dish Lal Maas and he hasn't stopped raving about it. I ordered medium heat and he ordered hot. We both felt they could have upped the heat factor. We will most definitely return.

Came here to use a Restaurant.com gift certificate and ended up not meeting the limit so guess we have to go back. The food was wonderful and like several other reviews on here, the service was tolerable. The gentlemen working (it was between the hours of 8:30 pm- 9:30pm) were busy with the closing work so I am giving some leeway with the service. We ordered the Paneer Pakoras which were scrumptous...for an Entree (a al carte with basmati rice) I got the Saffron Chicken with the heat/spice level at hot. It was great flavor and didn't kill my tastebuds but got the nasal passages clearing. ;) My sister ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and stayed with the medium spicy level and it was pretty close to the heat level of my Saffron Chicken. The best part was the Kabuli Naan which was cherry and nut naan (their menu online says raisin, but the menu at the restaurant stated cherry) and with the Saffron Chicken sauce and the Chicken Tikka Masala sauce with it, the flavor was crazy good. I could sit and eat just the sauces and kabuli naan all night. The childs chicken curry was ok. Nothing to "yelp" about but for $6.95 for the meal (Chicken curry, mixed veggies, rice and naan) it was reasonable. I will return for another visit to try their buffet and several other vegetarian options on the menu (along with the plethora of meat ones too). It was a perfect after class meal and was not disappointed.

I found a groupon for this restaurant and was very pleased. We went for dinner and had the lamb Vindaloos and the spicy coconut seafood curry with a nice rich malbec. The curry sauces were impressive, full of rich flavor and the naan is obviously homemade. The service is great, they will ask you how spicy, how rare, etc. and they make accommodations and substitutes if need be. The only thing was they seemed to be a little confused about how to use the groupon and computer system. It took awhile for us to leave with some kind of bill. They also need some better, professional photos taken of their food to showon their website how good it is! But I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for flavor and a nice selection of wines. Very good nepalese food.

We love this place. Cheap, great food, never too busy and it's simple. The restaurant location is not the best and it's not flashy like most places in midtown. The service can be a little slow but it is totally worth it. The vegetarian sampler is the best dish!

The food was delicious and of generous portions. I would like to try more, but I expect not to go back. Our server was briefly pleasant, but then evaded and ignored us for the rest of the evening. This was quite a challenge, as there was only one other group dining in the restaurant. And, in the end, they overcharged me. It is always disappointing to have something with such potential ruined by terrible people.

After driving past Kathmandu once or twice a month for the past couple years, we finally decided it to give it a try once I spotted a sweet deal on Groupon (i may have to consider myself as much a Grouponer as I am a Yelper!). After all, a specialty restaurant in Sac must be doing something right if it's been around for several years!!! I'm not sure why I've waited this long?!?! I suppose the outside of the restaurant may not be as appealing and inviting, but boy, I see why they don't focus on their outward appearance; the focus is in the flavors of their food!!! My husband met me for dinner and he wasn't very hungry so I decided we would just split an entree, Thali style, to minimize any excess spending beyond our Groupon value. We ordered the chicken Tikka Masala thali because this is my base on which to gauge whether an Indian restaurant is worthy or not. Let me say, the flavor of the Tikka Masala sauce is by far the best flavor I have tasted in my (only handful of) visits to Indian food!!!! I kept spooning heaping amounts of sauce onto my rice and indulging in the creamy, tomatoey goodness of it all!!! My husband agreed with the flavor. We also ordered a meal for my daughter from the children's menu. The prices for childrens' meals were fair and she was given alternative choices even though the menu had specific choosings for each meal. We really liked the waitress. She was very accommodating, pleasant and easy to communicate with. The only problem was that she was spread very thin. She appeared to be the only 'waitress', though there were others circulating as runners, drink fillers and bill collectors. She was hard to get a hold of, but when she was present she was very attentive...even taking the time to engage with my daughter and 'attempt' to converse (given my daughter's personality, she failed at getting a single word out of her, but that's my daughter for ya!). We agreed we would return again! The lack of one star is in the time we had to wait for our food and for our waitress to come back around again. I found us waiting for awkward moments of time for her to take our order and bring us a check. I suppose if you have the time and understanding, this can be overseen so that you can truly enjoy what you came for...the meal!!!

This is the best Indian food I've ever had. I was in Sacramento for work and came here with a couple colleagues for dinner. The restaurant was almost empty and we were sat and served quickly. I sampled two shrimp dishes and the chana masala. Usually I am 50/50 on chana masala, I don't love it, but it is definitely edible. The preparation of this dish was delicious! If I could mail-order it, I would. The other guys had a lamb dish and a chicken dish (I think). We all heartily enjoyed our meals. The drinks they offer are all made with wine, not liquor, so they're low-proof, but still taste great. I would highly recommend trying this place out.

Omg I just ate the best lamb dinner I have ever had in my life. The lamb Kathmandu Kitchen Special is to die for. I eat here a lot but tonight was especially freakin awesome....I think it depends on the chef, but we have better luck on weekday nights, (versus fri- sun). Damn that was good! Plus , the service is always friendly and good.

I've had a couple of bad experiences at Kathmandu Kitchen. First of all the service is TERRIBLE!!! It's not necessarily the servers fault because they were just understaffed both times I went there. One server for the entire restaurant is not acceptable. It takes forever to get your drinks and then when you are done with your meal you are held hostage waiting for the bill. Also, the bus boy spilled a full glass of water while cleaning up the table next to us. He didn't come back to clean it up for 20 minutes!! The food is decent and the pricing is typical of most Indian restaurants. The Vindaloo is actually pretty good with some nice heat to it. However, everything else is mediocre at best. We actually ordered a fried shrimp appetizer that wasn't even cooked thoroughly... It was disgusting and inedible and I never return food... They offered to cook us another order but we declined. At least they removed the appetizer from our bill. If you are looking for Indian Food in the downtown/midtown area there are better options out there.

Been here many times usually for the buffet, but tonight we had the mango chicken, mushroom masala, garlic and basil naan and lamb!!!! Perfect size meal. The chicken and lamb were tender and tasty. The basmati rice was great....we will be back reallllllll soon.

They have excellent customer service. We went there for dinner and requested couple of dishes be made to our specification and our server was prompt enough to check with chef and they sure served a really good meal. We ate daal, cauliflower, chicken, naan, noodles and momos. Spl thanks to Roma she was very courteous.

Oh Kathmandu, don't do this to me!! We've been loyal customers for a long time now. I love the food. But now we are keeping an eye out for a new Indian place. It breaks my heart! Here's the problem: they've been going through changes these past few months. We usually do takeout. The first issue is that we never get a decent amount of rice, even when we specifically ask AND PAY for extra. We've even placed our orders separately to try to get more, still no luck. I can't eat much at one sitting and always have leftovers, but the quantity of rice is small even to my taste! Why such a struggle to get a decent amount of the cheapest item in their kitchen?? Also, the prices have increased dramatically. Almost $20 for 1 entree and naan for take out?? Last night we were told our order would be ready in 10 mins. Half an hour later, my husband was still waiting in the restaurant. Also, when we were asked about the spice level when our order was placed, I said medium and he said spicy. They both came with NO spice at ALL, and included small containers of spice for us to mix in our own. Once I did that it was delicious, but my husband's was still too bland for him. So he decided he'd had enough and wants to find a new Indian place nearby. Please, Kathmandu, please clean up you act ASAP so I can enjoy your awesome food!!!

This review is for the Lunch Buffet. We had a great lunch - everything we tried was good. We went at 11:45 and were welcomed and shown to a table by a waitress and immediately went to the buffet. The pans weren't completely full but it looked like the lunch crowd was light, probably because it was the second week of winter break. We tried some of everything - there wasn't a bad dish. Our naan arrived immediately after we returned from the buffet and it was delicious. One of the owners who was continuously filling up our water glasses had a nice conversation with my college age son. I'm mostly writing this review to point out that going to a restaurant and enjoying the experience does have a time and place aspect. Writing a bad review because of a Groupon experience doesn't really help the rest of us who want to know how the food is. Admittedly, it helps Groupon diners - but is that a food review? If you go at the end of a buffet and there isn't much left, it that the restaurant's fault or the diner's fault? We found the staff to be polite and helpful. If you got to a restaurant at the height of the meal time, and staff is having a hard time keeping up, then tell us what time you were there and we can avoid that time period. I gave 4 stars because I've had other Indian buffets with more choices and not so many standard choices - but we really enjoyed our lunch and the price was right! Exactly what we expected.

The food here is overall delicious but our recent visit had a few detractors. Many other yelpers have noted the somewhat slow service, but I haven't seen a mention of this: they leave (inedible) spices in the food! Ok, so maybe some will consider this an "authentic" touch, but after accidentally chomping down on whole cardamom pods and bay leaves (ick!) twice, I felt like I had to examine every bite of my (otherwise delish) mushroom masala before putting it in my mouth. I have been to several other Nepalese restaurants and never had this issue. A word of warning if you are thinking of going on a date here: you will not look cute gagging on these and spitting them out. The other problem was that my boyfriend ordered his chicken makhani "hot" but it came out very mild. He still enjoyed it though. However, given how otherwise fantastic the food was (crazy good naan bread), I'm sure we will be back.

Groupon drew me here and tonight was the last night they would accept it. I ordered the tikki masala w/ rice and that totaled up to about $14. My groupon was for $20 and I still had to pay $1 tax, which was fine, but when I got home, they gave me a little plastic tub of the chicken, a regular sized styrofoam box of rice then a smaller box of rice. Was I supposed to get something else along with this meal? Maybe naan? I'm not sure, but I was a little confused. The food was pretty good though and seasoned well, but I do not think it was worth $14 for 5 pieces of chicken and rice. Meh, I don't know about this place.

Finally went here again on my first ever date with my current guy... He really enjoyed it, and I relearned anew the joys of one of the best Indian buffets in Sac. The curries are delicious, varied, and kept fresh (a problem at some buffet places), their naan is absolutely delicious (and not burned), and the interior is nice, the staff very friendly. Parking is still a nightmare, though, so you might have to park far away. But it still beats trekking out to Natomas or Davis, and it makes a great lunch or early dinner spot, especially if you're catching a movie at Tower, walking distance away. *thumbs still way up*

The Pavlovian theory was proven true the night we went to Kathmandu Kitchen. The neutral stimulus (me) along with a stimulus of some significance (smell of curry), granting the unconditional response of salvation. It was months since I had Indian food so my boyfriend and I decided to head over to Kathmandu Kitchen. We even had a groupon to use! We are huge fans of Indian food given that our families travel often to Nepal and Indian, and my family enjoy all types of curry dishes. Parking is a bit difficult om the street but we parked at a neighboring business' parking lot and did not get towed. Be careful though because you never know when they're watching. We entered and noticed the restaurant was very busy. The hostess greeted us warmly and gave us a few options on where we could sit. We were given the menu and looked at the menu with such delight! We ordered the vegetable Samosa (Nepali) which is the Nepalese style deep fried vegetable pastry stuffed with mixed vegetables and served with six pieces of samosas and achars. Yummy! You will not be disappointed. For the dinner, I ordered the matter paneer (chunks of homemade cheese and green peas cooked with herbs and spices in a creamy sauce) . It was ordered a la carte and served with rice but honestly did not have a bit of the rice (nothing wrong, just one of those carb watching foodies). My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala but with all the fixing including rice, dal, nan, chutney and vegetable curry of the day. His meal was served in a large tin compartmentalized plate. It was fancy and he enjoyed his meal wholeheartedly. Our hearts and our stomachs were so happy. I must have been in Indian and Nepali heaven because I was not disappointed. The service was great, everyone was friendly and my boyfriend talked to the waitress briefly about his parents traveling to Indian and Nepal. They seemed impressed, engaged and sincere. I cannot wait until we come back here and maybe I'll order the Lamb Tikka Masala with garlic nan. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone !

The weekday ALL YOU CAN EAT lunch buffet is great. You CANNOT find a better deal on Indian food for lunch. The lentil soup, the radioactive pink-orange chicken thing and the fried pastry/veggie things are my favorite. Someone below was complaining about the price. Is it like $13 now? Oh I'm sorry then maybe we should go to that OTHER Indian all you can eat buffet down the street. Oh wait ... there isn't one???????????????? Okay then I guess we are still coming here :p

Revamped. It's more colorful inside.. There's even some parking available in a nearby lot reserved for Kathmandu patrons. *Vegan items notated on menu (not on to-go menus) There's a disconnect in service. Like, a language barrier but it's not like they're dicks.. it's just there's a disconnect and you see that.. so service could be better. The food is pretty good. I like it.

Definitely have reasonable pricing and wonderful food. My restaurants closed down so this is a perfect find for me! Small venue though. Parking totally sucks, but not too bad on a nice night.

The place was pretty good, but the service was not the best. I came here on a a Tuesday night for dinner. It was around 6 pm and it was pretty crowded. We got seated, and after that kind of got forgotten about. My wine glass was broken and I had to wait a bit to get it replaced. We had the Himalayan Appetizer to start, which was good. Our duck tandoori was also pretty good. The duck was nice and tender. But then we waited forever for our lamb masala to come out. We had to remind the servers about it twice and it appears they forgot about it each and every time. By that time, the crowd had cleared out, so I don't know what the hold up was. It finally came out and it was good, if perhaps a little bit too sweet for my liking. In all, food was decent but not amazing enough to make up for poor service.

The service here is a bit poor, but the food usually makes up for it. I came here with a groupon and the woman working there accidentally hit "redeem" on my phone then proceeded to claim that I had already redeemed this groupon and was trying to use it for a second time. I think it was an honest mistake on her part, but it was a very annoying and frustrating situation to be in, so I recommend printing your groupon for this place. The food is great though! And this place is usually pretty empty, so there's never a long wait.

I have now been here twice for take out. My first experience was pretty good. $11 something for a giant trip to the buffet! I couldn't resist. I recall loving their cauliflower dish of the day and raving their pakiras. My second visit(today) was excellent! Excellent in the sense that as soon as I walked in, I wad greeted by two servers. I informed them I wanted to do the to-go lunch buffet. Next I asked the very nice waitress which items were vegan today. Now keep in mind that normally there are maybe one or two Vegan options everywhere I go due to the use of milk and ghee in most Indian cooking. But today!!! Today the waitress informed me was the best day to come in if you're vegan because the Sunday cook normally makes most vegetarian items dairy-free. Score! Knowing this seriously made my Sunday-afternoon. I chose the vegan spinach sagg, the delicious cooked green beans, some plain white rice, a giant bowl of their dahl, the cauliflower and potato dish, as well as a handful of scrumptious pakoras, tamarin sauce, and spicy pickle. You honestly cannot beat the variety of vegan options nor the price. Quality wise-I give this place a big two thumbs up because they ate friendly, informative, and appear to be a very clean establishment. Price-definitely well priced.

I used to live in Berkeley, and LOVE the variety of Indian food there! Ever since moving back to Sacramento, I haven't been able to find any restaurants in the area that are even comparable to the Indian restaurants in Berkeley. I first tried the Kathmandu Kitchen in Davis about 2 years ago and was unimpressed...the prices were so much higher than what I'm used to paying for curry, and we sat at our table for half an hour before anyone came to take our order! The food took just as long, which was ridiculous considering how empty the restaurant was that night. I recently bought a groupon to the Kathmandu Kitchen on Broadway and thought perhaps a different location would be better. We called in advance to set a reservation, but the hostess said that there was no wait. When we got to the restaurant 30 minutes later, it was PACKED! We waited 20 minutes for a table. There were 3 of us and they sat us at a 2 person table, with one chair hanging out in an already crowded corner. The waitress came and bumped into my friend and spilled water on him, but didn't bother apologizing. Needless to say, my experience with the service here hasn't been stellar. On another note, the food was pretty good, but I've definitely had better. For Sacramento Indian food, not bad. But the dishes came in smaller portions than what I would expect $13 curry to be. It just doesn't make sense to come here for smaller portions of lower rate food and service, and then pay twice as much as I would somewhere else.

I had the lunch buffet. I loved everything I ate and it's totally worth the $10. I'm definitely going back.
