I am very surprised at all the low reviews of this place! I thought the food was amazing. I was teetering between the pulled pork sandwich and the french dip. I decided on the pulled pork, and it did NOT disappoint! BEST I have ever had! The service was good. Our attentive waitress even heard us toast to our friend's Birthday, and brought out a piece of Banana Cream Pie at the end of our meal (on the house, of course! And if you like banana, this was a small slice of heaven. I kept hearing about it throughout the trip; "If I only had a piece of that banana pie!" They had great cocktails too, but at $9 a pop, they added up quick, and surpassed the pricetag of our "actual" lunch! $54 for drinks and $35 for food! Yikes, pricey lunch!!

Well... Umm... they have some very impressive stained glass fixtures... the old bar is beautiful... But, the food is nothing to write home about. If you're in Old Town maybe just stop in for a drink and enjoy the antiques.

Wanting to enjoy my Sunday afternoon near the river, I first made a stop at Fat City for lunch. I need to stop straying from my fellow Yelp friends' recommendations, because I get into trouble. I couldn't choose between the Turkey and Avocado Sandwich (because I wanted to try sun dried tomato mayonaisse) and the Portabello Sandwich (something Antoinette O recommended), so I asked for the server's recommendation. On a warm summer day, the server suggested the Turkey and Avocado Sandwich and I went along with it. The sandwich didn't impress me. First of all, the whole sun-dried tomato mayonaisse thing was a joke, because there was little to no spread on the bread, let alone the taste of sun-dried tomato on it. The avocado was so unripe that it was like eating a green peach. And did I mention I ordered a cocktail? Well, I might as well say I ordered a 7 dollar cup of soda because there was no slight taste of booze in it. As you can see, I'm a little pissed at this place, but since it's a cool classy old school establishment, I'll give it that much and keep it at 3 stars.

One reviewer said it best - "This place is ok." The Old Sacramento atmosphere was nice, but the food was forgettable.

I wonder sometimes about these Yelp reviews. Just ate here tonight. I had a bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. Very tasty. The prices were a little high, maybe. But, not insane, at all. The service was attentive. The restaurant is very charismatic with many beautiful lamps and stained glass. My wife had the crab Louie salad. She said it was good. The other two in our party did not complain about their food either. So, in all, it was a decent place. I give it three stars for food and service and add a star because of the character of the place and locale. I would eat here again.

I always have enjoyed Frank Fats but Fat City is just not up to the standard for the Fats family of restaurants. The food is just very ordinary. We ordered the fixed meal special and the best thing was my vanilla ice cream with fudge sauce. My steak was tough, veges were overcooked and my husband's chicken and scampi was a disaster. Just can't come up with a reason to ever return. There are just too many other places to spend your dining dollars....Don't waste your time

Took my son to ride the spooktacular train ride today and afterward we were hungry so after looking around for places to eat this place looked the best. The inside decor is pretty cool stained glass, old brick, awesome custom wood bar area.. So thought it was going to be a great place to eat ordered the 12$ burger and fries to split with my 3 year old. My first bite And it tasted like something a 90 year old grandma would make but I was hungry so took another bite and almost broke a tooth on a piece of bone. I put it on the plate and wasn't going to worry about bc I was so hungry. On my third bite again bit into something hard it was another bone so I flagged down the waitress and showed here. She got the manager and asked if I was ok and said i didn't have to pay. If this place had the food to match it's looks it would be awesome but I'll never go back. Three bites and 7 hours later I'm still burping up the horrible taste and have a toothache!!! 1 star for aesthetics

I meant, bomb food. I like this place. Haha had the French dip, came out before I can finish the bread. Amazing service. Lizette is a boss. Pay her more!

Here is what Fat City has going for it: When eating in Old Sac, it less obnoxious then Joe's Crab Shack, less expensive than Rio City Café, and less creepy than Fanny Ann's Saloon. It features a historical and impressive bar, as well as some lovely stained glass work throughout the premises. The food is decent and the portions are very large. I usually order the burger - a big, garlicky, dependable menu choice. For an informal, sit-down meal in Old Sac, I would generally choose Fat City over the competition.

Great service and and such cute spot. The food is just okay. (Grumpy cat face)

A nice enough restaurant, maybe a little understaffed? We ended up here because the wait at Joe's Crab Shack was about two hours. When you walk in, the "waiting area" consists of two tiny benches right at the entrance, so if it's cold out, I can imagine it would get pretty jammed at the entrance. We were seated in the back of the restaurant after waiting a few minutes, and they brought our drinks right away (which were delicious and strong). We did walk past a woman that was seated literally in the middle of the doorway between the main dining room and the back, so that was weird. It was a while before our server came to take our order, and our appetizer (fried pickles - eh, just average) arrived at the same time our entrees did, which is a pet peeve of mine. The fish and chips were good, the steak and potatoes were good, but the service kinda came to a dead stop. I noticed the tables next to us were pissed because their food didn't come out together at all, one item came out and the person who brought it out said "oh, you guys all ordered at the same time?" I think they need to work on their timing and their staffing issue.

Walking towards Fat City was like being in New Orleans or a midwestern set at Universal Studios it has that old, antique feel. Eerie kinda, besides that! Fat City was a great place to dine at. The waiters seated our large party, since we did have 10+ people who came from the day long Yo Yo State Championships down the street. Famished mind you, from winning 1st place and 2nd ... anyways! My party had the Country Fried Ribeye steak and I had the Fat City Fettuccine. The sauce of the Country Fried was a darker brown than I'm used to, but then again it tasted completely different. The portion was big enough to fill all of the hungry men. I had the Fat City Fettuccine that had spicy cream sauce, Fettuccine noodles, fresh pieces of Mozzerella and tomatoes. It was magnificent, it had the right amount of kick and my pasta was perfect. The service was great, our waiter refilled our waters and checked up on us often. Really great place, I would definitely come back again when I'm in Old Sacramento.

This was a frequent of mine over the last 2 years, however less now. A lot of the meals they offer don't catch my picky-eye.. and I was a little put off when they took the Ravioli plate off the menu. The Appetizer Sampler is delish, I would recommend it completely! The Fried Green Beans are the absolute best. Their chicken potpie was a bit bland for my tastes and it was mostly fluffy crust. The chicken inside the pie was a bit dry - odd, considering it's sitting inside of chicken broth. Their meatloaf sandwich is pretty decent but a bit over seasoned with what tastes like nutmeg or allspice. Which is clearly an indicator of the meatloaf by itself. The ambiance in the place is quite lovely... stained glass everywhere! And their bar is gorgeous to look at. (Just looking for me, as I don't drink..) their Banana smoothie is really quite delicious! Lastly: their desserts! Fantastic banana cream pie! :)

Bartender is bomb! Makes great drinks and makes sure you like your drink or he'll make something u do like. Friendly, food looks good, but we haven't ate here yet. The atmospher is pretty cool with all the old stained glass. Place is clean. We actually started next door, which was HORRIBLE, thank goodness we left and found great bloody mary's here! 3 stars for now (2 on reserve) since we didnt eat.

Really awful. I heard the food was good here, but I was very disappointed. They served severely watered down drinks (both the chocolate martini and the regular one) and food was not appetizing at all. Worst salad I've had in my life. Chinese chicken salad was very wilted old lettuce (from a bag maybe?) in a plate of water. I barely tasted a hint of dressing and there were maybe three thinly sliced pieces of tasteless pre cooked chicken mixed in. Add about ten sesame seeds on top and three crunchy fried things and viola-there's your $14 salad! I couldn't eat it so it sat there and the waitress didn't offer anything else even though I clearly wasn't eating. Hubby's bourbon burger was a cold soggy lump of meat with what tasted like jar BBQ sauce dumped on top. He asked for Cajun fries and got cold regular ones. The only thing good were the sourdough bread rolls. Our waitress was nice but not helpful when we pointed out the problems. I'm so sorry but the food was really bad here. We won't return.

Gosh this was a hard one! I would have given it a two and a half stars if it were possible but alas the yelp gods have not graced us with this privilege yet. Honestly, I would probably not come back here. We went in the late afternoon when the actual dining room was closed. We sat in the bar area which was not particularly clean or welcoming. The bartender was really nice but seemed super rushed. Although not particularly crowded somehow it seemed understaffed...or he was not great with time management. One or the other. Service was pretty slow. It took about 10 minutes to get our first drink. We ordered appetizers (a menagerie of fried goodies) and the french onion soup and salad. The apps were good. Standard cholesterol laden bar fare. Hey, it is called Fats for a reason. The soup was a no go. I just didn't like it. I actually gave it to one of my fellow diners who ate it but likely because it was there and not because it was particularly good. The worst part? The bathrooms. The smell going down the stairs to the bathroom was putrid. It seemed like I had entered the latrine long before I opened the door. Yuck! The bathroom itself did not smell any better. The whole joint just seemed to be sticky and just not clean. I recommend finding another dining establishment when in old Sac.

Fat City does not sound promising for a restaurant in Old Sacramento, especially for health nuts and the calorie conscious. Then again, it is in the tackiness that is Old Sacramento, between numerous candy stores, tattoo parlors, and souvenir shops. And this is the place where John Sutter struck gold. Really. The Bourbon burger is excellent, as are the accompanying fries. The service was fast&helpful. Even the ice water was perfect. Unfortunately, the seating is too close together&the bathrooms are kind of shady. The dishes tend to be overpriced. Fat City is an ideal place to watch the world, watch Old Sacramento pass by, and pack on the pounds.

4.7 I love to come here during their Dinner hours because of the selections! Fat is a combination of fusion from different parts of Asia with an influence of Modern America! They are very creative with their dishes and design. You have to understand the concepts of culinary to appreciate it. They are a bit pricey, but the proportion are decent and compliments each other. I love to dine in Old Sac, It gives you that Old Town ambiance, just something about it. Well, by far I had nothing but great experience dining here. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. So far I had tried the... Braised English Short Ribs- Very good **And I recommend you try their Specialties** . Fat City Specialties , Old Fashioned Meatloaf 14.95- Yummy Grilled Fresh Salmon 19.95- Tasted Fresh and delicious Roasted Half Chicken 14.95- Very tasty Hawaiian Baby Back ribs 18.95- Yumm Tequila Lime Steak 17.95- One of my favorite Garlic Rib Eye Steak- Very delicious I haven't tried their burgers, salad or sandwiches as of yet, but the main course entree are very good. The only thing that prevents them from a 5 star are the selection in Seafood and Pork. I wish they had more Seafood and Pork items on the menu, other then that, this place is a great place to dine.

This place tasted quite good. The food seem fresh. However, when I arrived home I developed a terrible, body convolsing food poisoning! DO NOT EAT THE PULLED PORK SANDWITCH. It has bacteria in it that will make you have terrible vomiting. I will never go back to this place.

I have a really hard time reviewing places like this. They serve basically Dennys/Lyons style food with slightly better quality, but the restaurant is freakin' gorgeous and I hate to knock them for serving what they serve because they clearly cater to families and tourists, so it wouldn't be a good idea for them to serve anything else. Suffice it to say that if you have some family coming into town with a bunch of picky eaters, this is a great choice - it's reasonably priced, the service is really nice and really friendly, and it's a really neat looking building. If you're looking for fine dining or really any kind of food that is even, I dunno, vaguely interesting I would not personally go here. As far as I can tell, the menu is all basically just American diner standards done moderately well.

Came here Wednesday for happy hour. I really like this place. The service & price are both really good - 1/2 off appetizers for happy hour & approximately $2-$3 for drafts/wells. We had the wings, lumpia & green beans & they were all amazing! So, I put $2 the parking meter directly outside Fats assuming you only have to pay for parking 'til 6pm. WRONG! When I got to my car there was a $42.50 ticket... apparently in Old Sacramento, parking meters go 'til 8pm... BOOOOO & F-U Parking Attendant Bowman! I HATE YOU! Now that I know this, my advice - park in the parking garage because Fats validates up to $5!

I have never had a worse dinner in my Sacramento dinning experiences. I had Pot Stickers that were a gooey mess! The young girl, I was with, ordered Mac and Cheese from the children's menu and I know it was Krafts out of a box. Really?? I use to go to Fat's many years ago, and the food was good and it was Chinese. NOW, it's very bad American food!

Went here for a $30 prix fixe tonight for Sacramento Regional Dining Week. This was the most piss-poor, horrid meal I have had in almost a decade. The "Tequila Lime Steak" was something straight out of the Kitchen Nightmares TV show. The steak had a sauce around the outside that tasted worse than bad Italian salad dressing. I could go on, but I feel sick to my stomach after how ripped off I feel. The Fat family should truly be concerned about how poorly this reflects on their name. This restaurant is clearly an afterthought, and unfortunately, I never want to give my business to another Fat branded establishment again. Terrible. I'm embarrassed for this place.

Was in recently with my son. He chose Fat City because we've been there before and were impressed. While the food was great, the hostess was cold and just seemed pissed off that people were coming in. I had the French dip and it was delicious. My son had the mini corn dogs and was pleased as well. We both really liked the fries. Our drinks weren't so great. I had a Mojito that was probably the worst I've ever had. My little dude had a Roy Rogers that tasted just like a flat Coke with a maraschino tossed in. Our waiter was nice but seemed to forget about us. Don't know if I will be returning.

First time eating here. Hubby had the meatloaf and mash potatoes. The meatloaf was bland and a little salty. Our two little girls had their Mac and cheese and that was extremely dry and bland. Not cheesy at all. I had the turkey and avocado sandwich and it was good. Don't think I'd come here again, but if I did, u would definitely order something different.

Bad service, bad food. My father and I ordered the grilled salmon and it had an awful red sauce (taste like ketchup) on top and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Kind of an odd mix. I had to scrape the sauce off and drown my salmon in lemon in order for it to taste decent. My mother ordered chicken with stir fry, the chicken was very bland. Our waitress was the bartender, she was busy making herself an iced coffee as we patiently waited for our check. The main dining area was closed during the time we went, most of the waiters were just hanging around, the chef even joined them. I Will not be going there again, I wish I would of yelped the place before!

I went here for a banquet and we reserved the room downstairs. The night started off fine with the walnut prawns which are and should be delicious no matter who cooks it. The other food however was terrible. The fried chicken and fried calamari was so tough, it was like eating rubber. Thank God there were no issues with the white rice, I was concerned. The problems only got worse with the service. It was okay at first since everyone's water glasses were filled but after that they seemed to have disappeared and only focused on refilling the food, a nice gesture but the food was still awful. Once that was over the employees disappeared. Our glasses were empty and not refilled until they started to clean up our food. We had activities going on like picture taking which was around the time the cake was being sent to our table. I was in the middle of eating my cake when I was called up to take a picture with my class. I took the picture and was excited to continue eating the delicious cake that was not made at Fat City. Once I sat down I noticed that my cake along with all the dishes were gone. Not only was I not done with my cake, the other people at my table didn't even have a chance to eat their cake before it was taken away. I asked for water again and they said that they couldn't give me any since they were closing. It was a simple glass of water not a souffle. All in all this was a terrible experience that I hope to never have again.

Great location and nice atmosphere. Pretty basic menu but food was good. Had the turkey burger, wife had fish dinner, And daughter had fat city sandwich. All were good. Service was great until it got busy then it was average.

K, went here Sunday with three friends for a b-day celebration. I can't believe a nice restaurant like this served their $16 crab Louie with ICEBURG lettuce, and hardly any memorable fish on the salad at all!! Also with thousand island salad dressing!! This is supposedly an upscale restaurant?! Friends had the tilapia and a pasta dish. All were a bit bland as well as the presentations could use some work. Servers? . .well let's just say we were a mixed crowd table and the service was lacking. . Saw a coupon in the paper for 55+, however left @ home and they refused to honor it even though it was our friend's b-day. The one thing that was good about this restaurant - that famous banana cream pie.. If only I had known . . . this is a NOT. . .Bless

The ambiance? Old west meets kitschy collector. Beautiful 'Tiffany' lighting, leaded glass, a bar shipped in from Colorado. This building has been around since the 1860s and started as a department store. It's been lovingly restored and it feels good to be here. The crowd? Rambling tourists looking for respite after one too many forays into cheap souvenir and taffy stores. A few locals with families thrown in just to make you feel at home. The food? Solidly ok. The name implies Chinese, but NOOOOO! Steaks, chops, pasta, salads and burgers await your perusal. I had the half roast chicken with garlic mashed potatoes & veggies. The chicken was huge, juicy, and topped with some of the veggies that had been roasting in the bottom of the pan. The garlic mashed potatoes were laughable. They tasted ok, but the portion was the size of about 3 tablespoons. The side vegetable was green beans - well made but a little greasy. Companions dining with me all enjoyed their choices - one had a salad, one the garden burger and the last chose fish and chips. Service was fast, very friendly and attentive.

Altho Frank Fat's on L is my fave, I enjoy this festive, fun place often. I always get the salmon cause it is just that good. Whenever my sisters come to visit we end up here for one reason or another, we went during a recent wedding in the family, a few nights before the event and had a really good time. I think we'll keep it in the loop for many years.

I brought an out-of-town visitor and my boyfriend here because Fat City was offering a buy-one-get-one-free meal deal for proud owners of a November birthday (me!). We arrived later in the evening, when crowds were light, and yet we were seated at a table practically sitting on top of another couple enjoying dinner. How awkward to sit so close in such a quiet restaurant that I could recount their entire conversation when there were plenty of other open tables with a little more privacy. The food was average, mostly Americanized food like pasta, sandwiches, meat dishes with mashed potatoes and green beans. I wouldn't go as far to say that my meal was "reheated" and not cooked fresh like my friend did, but there just wasn't anything spectacular about what I was eating. I had the Mediterranean chicken breast, and I can't figure out how someone can take flavorful food like tomatoes, olives and feta and make them taste bland. At least the portion was large enough that I had enough food for another meal the next day. Service was OK. Our waitress was prompt at first, but when we weren't ready to order drinks, she left us alone for another 20 minutes before returning, which I thought was a bit much. The evening ended with a free slice of "famous" banana cream pie (again, thanks to the birthday). Apparently I'm the only person on the planet that likes bananas, so I had to enjoy it alone. All in all, this is a place you take your friends if you don't want to offend anyone with exotic food choices. But then again, couldn't you do the same thing at Carrows?

Having not been to old town sacramento in quite a while, and having gone to this restaurant right around Christmas time, the wait wasn't terribly long (maybe 10 minutes) Beautifully decorated, in that old world feel... stained glass, dark wood, but not in an oppressive manner, it felt warm and inviting. My date and I both ordered the French dip sandwich, which was served on warm bread, the beef was thinly sliced, and it came with what seemed like a mound of french fries. Our waiter was attentive and quick to get our order in. The only delay was with the "drink stylist" aka.. bartender. I will admit that the Godiva chocolate martini was well worth the wait. While waiting for our dinner and drinks, we were served these wonderful sourdough rolls. I think that this is worth the time and the wait and will definitely eat there again

My daughter's rehearsal dinner for her wedding was held at Fat City Bar & Cafe. I, the mother of the bride never got served my meal and we ordered wine for my husband's & my father's meal and they never brought it until AFTER they finished their meals...!???! The service was extremely poor - then one of the bridesmaids has cancer and undergoing extreme chemo treatments and when she inquired on the Cajun shrimp & chicken pasta, whether it was spicy or not...they told her no...she ordered the dish and it turned out to be extremely spicy which she could NOT eat ...don't think the server sampled the dish before he spoke...also when management was approached about the issues they made excuses and tried to turn it back to the bride and groom...there is NO excuse to fail to serve a key member of the wedding party...especially the mother of the bride!! Perhaps if they had a cocktail server and two food servers for our room of approximately 30 people then I probably would have gotten my meal ...! I don't recommend Fat City for any event and I know Chef Ramsey would cringe and be livid! Very disappointed and dissatisfied. I don't want to rate this place one star but I am forced to in order to rate and post this review :o/

This is one of those places that you really want to be good. It's got a nice atmosphere, and is in a great location... Especially when you have a preschooler that loves to go to the 'train store' in Old Sac and see the steam train running by the river. Went here yesterday for a late lunch with my son and my mother, and there were some people waiting to be seated. Hostess was friendly and seated us within five minutes. All good so far. Waiter (this is where we start to go down hill) seemed as though he couldn't focus his attention on us to save his life - and this guy only appeared to have about four tables to take care of. Even when taking our order he wasn't really listening. I asked a question about something on the menu and he said, "OK great. We'll get those right out to you." Um... ?? Hello, I asked a question! When he brought the food he put the plates in front of the wrong people (gave mine to my mother and my mother's to me). Really?!?! There are only two of us!! Food: One Chinese Chicken Salad and one Portobello Mushroom burger. Both completely mediocre. Not horrible, just nothing too exciting. My description for both would be: edible. However, it is likely I will give it another try since my wife and I do like to take our son to Old Sac on occasion. Also, my wife and I ate here previously for dinner. We had a much better experience at that time. Better food and better service. Although, in the future I'll probably stick to some of their more basic fare - perhaps burgers or the pot pie. Last but not least... I think the smell of those garlic fries were enough to get me to go back to try them.

Service sub par. Denny's quality food. Fine dining prices. Will definitely not go again. So many old sac restaurants riding their location and not producing quality food/service. $3.50 for bitter coffee... Lmao

Food was great, hostess, not so great. Our server - wonderful! Here is the low down: We entered around 2 in the afternoon, so it was pretty slow. 6 people in our party, so we were not hard to miss as we stood in front of the hostess waiting to make eye contact with us, and to greet us upon entering. We foolishly stood there until I spoke up and said "Hello" to get the hostesses attention away from whatever she was writing on her paper. That was a bit annoying. Things got better as we got to our table. We had an excellent server. She was quick and very chatty, especially with my daughter who had lots to say about her new rock collection. I appreciate her taking the time to talk to her - it was very nice. The food was great, I could go back to eat there again. We had the Chicken Pot Pie (better be hungry for that - it's HUGE!), the Bourbon BBQ Burger, Macaroni & Cheese, Garlic Bread & the California Salad. Everything was great except for the salad, there wasn't much to write home about on that. It is worth a stop to eat here though, if you can get past the hostess doodling instead of greeting, then you're in for a great meal!

i was very disappointed. ill never be back. ive heard great things, but the food was not good. we tried 4 different items, and none of them were good. actually sent back 2 items. do not get the eggs benedict, cafe salad or the crostini. its very loud, and very slow. if youre paying 13 dollars for a salad, it should be good.

The food was good. I had the chicken pot pie and my son had clam chowder and fries. The fries were yummy. The only issue we had was that the bottom of my friend's glass fell off, literally. One of the waitresses said that it happens all the time. The manager picked up the tab for her lunch, but not the tea that ruined her white top. If nothing else, it made for a funny memory!

Way too expensive for mediocre and bland food. In town for business so we tried Fat City. I had a signature salad the waitress suggested to die for and my guest had the "Special" Halibut. The salad was pretty good except the dressing she bragged about was nowhere to be found or really tasted. I had to ask for additional which helped. The Fish special was over wide noodles and was a complete letdown. Not a lot of taste at all and the piece of fish was really small. $22 for the special was way too much for the "Special". Waitress was fabulous though.

This is my favorite restaurant in Sacramento! The atmosphere of this place is amazing. I feel like I am going back in time when I eat there. Many stained glass lamps and framed art are on display. The collection is extensive. The bar is large with hand carved wood and probably from the early 1900s. There are carousel horses, an old jukebox and many more antiques. As I am fascinated with history and antiques, I just love eating at this place. And there is the food--- delicious! I had mahi mahi broiled with pineapple sauce. It was cooked to perfection. I love this place!!!

Fantastic happy hour. Great prices on drinks that weren't even on the happy hour list. We watched the game at the bar with a few cool strangers next to us. The service from the bar was cool, attentive and able to make up stuff that we requested without all the markup in price. If I'm in the area, Id go back for sure.

It has been ten years form our last visit and the food as well as the ambiance is still stunning. The entrees are reasonably priced and the service is above average. Their beer and wine selection is limited but classy and the full bar makes it a plus. You can't miss the location and can't avoid browsing the tin ceilings along with stained glass windows while enjoying contemporary european and american eats. All in all, one of the best places to spend an evening in Old Sacramento. After dinner, take a walk to the Tower Bridge and take a peek at the state Capitol.

I wish I could give a 3.5 but I can't give a 4. Service was great. Food was average. Priced ok. Beer seemed overpriced.

I had the Fat City Combo which is a 1/2 a pastrami & turkey sandwich with a bowl of French Onion soup both were excellent! My wife had the Turkey Burger w/Pesto which was also excellent. Reasonable prices & food was well prepared & seasoned.

Hadn't been to Fat City for a number of years before stopping in for lunch today. Much better food than I remembered and, honestly, better than it has to be, given the Old Sac location. Our table ordered a cheeseburger, a french dip sandwich, a roast beef and turkey sandwich on toasted sourdough, French onion soup, and a shrimp and crab louie - all were terrific. Service was a bit slow.

The review is partially that Fat City did not live up to my expectations. I grew up going to Frank Fats and California Fats and always enjoyed my times. I was not impressed by the food, service or ambiance. I will not be back.

Had the "French Dip and Onion Soup" on first visit and the food was absolutely delicious. The service was far better than I had received anywhere in a long time. However, second visit was not nearly as enjoyable. It was on New Years Eve and my family and I had to wait an hour to be seated. This was acceptable being that it was a busy night and our first visit had us craving more. The food however was not up to par at all, I had the "Cajun Pasta". There was little meat in the dish and it looked like it had been prepared hours earlier. The waiter was busy which left us ignored and when he did help us he was snappy. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant understanding that maybe it is not best to go here on a busy night.Great atmosphere in the heart of Old Sac. Beautiful setting and great selection of foods. I went with my wife and 3 young children on two separate occasions.

Red-headed Stepchildren in Old Sacto! Walking through tourist laden Old Sacramento, we came up to the corner of the Fat City Bar & Cafe, run by the ubiquitous Fat family since 1976. Apparently the Fats have restaurants all over Sacto and have been running them for a long time. The impressive, ornate interior, with it's dark woods, stained glass, gorgeous antique bar and art-deco chandeliers sets a historical backdrop and expectations for special meal. With a party of 6, we were taken towards the back and seated at a nice table beneath an awesome, enormous chandelier. There were elegant rooms behind us that provide more private dining. After being seated, however, the ball was dropped. Was it the host? Someone mismanaged something and after getting set up with waters, no one returned to take our drink orders for over 10 minutes. We had to flag a server passing by and ask for some service. Not a good sign. Apparently, someone forgot to assign a server to our table, and we sat there as servers walked by multiple times. Second class citizens, all the way! The old red-headed stepchild treatment! By gosh! The Tequila Lime Tri Tip steak. $14.95 The steak was tasty, with a nice, simple garlic lime flavor, though I didn't taste what Tequila had to do with anything. The scoop of garlic mash was decent. There was a small cup of some kind of vinaigrette, and I never figured out what it was for. Not spectacular, but definitely worth $14.95. Notes from others in my party: $8.95 Small Chicken Caesar salad was good. $9.95 Fat City Hamburger was exceptionally good. Prices were affordable and the ice water was refreshing on a hot day. Though the wait staff is dressy and the place is elegant, the place is tourist friendly. The seating gaffe sure put a kibosh on a fully successful experience and subtracts a star rating.

Interesting venue. Service friendly, prices average, food mediocre. Ate with a group of 10. We all thought the same. I had Chicken Pot Pie as did others. Bland!

So I was walking around Old Town Sac and my boyfriend thought it would be nice to go into one of the restaurants and have a bite to eat. I put on the brakes, "Whoa, are you sure? I have heard these places in old town are just there to trap tourists, that they are places with bad service and nasty food"? He thought about it and we both decided if it was bad we would pull out of where ever we went, so we saw Fat City had a happy hour and there were some people eating, so we went in. First we were seated in the restaurant, but when we said we wanted happy hour, the guy who seated us looked annoyed that he had to move us. Once we were move I noticed no one was having happy hour a lot of people had no drink in front of them and no one looked happy. When i looked back at the restaurant part, those people were eating, while the bar had no service. There was one dude behind the bar, but he did a good job ignoring the people who wanted service. My boyfriend even went up to the bar to place our order, but he was also ignored by his direct approach. We got up and left, as did several other couples. If you are going to do a fake happy hour to get people in and then be rude to them, then don't OFFER IT! I felt bad that Old Sac lived up to the bad restaurant rep, but the proof is in the pudding, as they say or the lack of any yummy food! LOL

I came to California's captiol for a business trip and wanted to eat somewhere in Old Sacramento. Fat City was one of the only restaurants open in the area at 8 pm on a Tuesday night, that didn't look like a dirty bar. I ordered the Bourbon Burger with Garlic Fries and had a Coke. The food was tasty, services was quick and friendly and the place looked pretty cool and pretty clean. It's got a nice old town feel to it. I'd come back here again if I'm in the area.

My family (husband, 2 young kids, and I) went to Old Town just to walk around and decided to get lunch. I wanted a burger and this place seemed to be the only choice since the other places I saw were pizza, sandwiches, crepes, hot dog stands, etc. I went in not expecting much because it's a touristy area where things can be overpriced and not done well just because of it's location. I am happy to say the place was great. Three of us had burgers and one had a PB&J. The buns were great and toasted, fries were good, and I loved the virgin bloody mary. The decor is really cool too. We will be going back. I'd love to try the French Onion soup. It looked really good.

Had lunch here with my husband using the free birthday entree deal. The food was ok, not bad not great. If we hadn't used the free entree deal I probably wouldn't eat there since the prices seem rather high for the quality of the food and there are much better places in that price range. (33rd Street Bistro, 4th Street Grille, Cafe Bernardo to name a few). My husband had the pulled pork sandwich which he enjoyed but had to eat with a fork since the bread was greasy/soggy, his fried were great - the best thing either of us had. I had the Fat City Combo which was 1/2 Fat City Sandwich and choice of soup of salad. My sandwich was ok, the bread was brushed with oil before grilling so is was greasy which I don't like and seems like an outdated way to grill bread, or it should be. The salad was ok. We were seated quickly and our waiter came quickly so that was a plus. It did seem like the tables are close together and the chairs are very uncomfortable. After we got our food the waiter never bothered to come back to ask how our food was or bring refills. He did bring a complimentary banana cream pie - again nothing to write home about but hey it was free. Overall it was just ok. Not a place I'd rush to by any means and the prices are too high for the quality of the food. I'm sure they stay busy because of their location in Old Town and the inside is pretty neat but they need to splurge on some more comfortable chairs and remove some of the tables so you aren't sitting so close to the next table and to allow more room for the waitstaff to move around so they aren't bumping your chair every time they move past.

Went to this place on Valentine's Day with my wife and kids. Was seated within 5 minutes. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The menu was usually right up my alley, they had alot of stuff that i'm dying to try. Pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, steaks, fish... I opted for the Chinese Salad. Hey, i'm on a diet! My salad was good though, and my wife had the Fritatta which I tried as well and that we delicious too. I'd like to come back one day when i'm feeling dangerous and try the pulled pork. Looks like a nice place to come for happy hour too. The bartender had everyone cutting up and laughing their asses off. I'm gonna try this place with some work buddies on a Friday night and see what happy hour is about at Fats.

NoOOOO!! An Asian Restaurant name with Italian and American fusion cuisine!!! We went with a group of people for dinner before heading out to the boats. My boyfriend and I ordered pasta dishes, and we were disappointed. The pastas did not have a lot of flavor. I basically gave my dish for my bf to finish up. One star for the food. The service was good. Our waiter accommodated our request to split the bill into four different checks. That was awesome. In addition, our waiter took our order promptly since we were the last couple to arrive. One star for the service.

In the off season evenings there aren't many choices for dinner. We wandered along the sidewalks casing out the best location and came back to Fat City after looking all the others over. While tempted to go back to Fanny Anne's, it didn't look too kid-friendly for our 3 and 10-year olds. Even though Fat City didn't have a kids' menu posted outside, they had one when we were seated. Service was quick and friendly. Sourdough rolls saved the day as the kids complained of being hungry. My Chinese chicken salad was tasty, even though I know it's not real Chinese food. Mixed in with the iceburg lettuce were cherry tomato halfs, cubed cucumbers, shredded carrots, chicken, toasted almond slices, deep fried won ton skin bits, and mysterious clear vegetable-like shreds. The dressing was light and delicious. My wife liked the pork cutlet, and my kids liked the chicken strips (but they did say they were a bit too peppery). Including one draft beer we got out for under $50 including tip. I'll try out their location when down in San Diego next time.

Good cobb salad and nice bar area. Burger was tasty and fine. Great service and menu was nice. Good festive place to dine in Tahoe. It's traditional American food and it was good, but didn't find anything too special.

The Burger was great, my wife's pulled pork sandwich was fabulous and the french fires were yummy. The service was good and the atmosphere was the Old Sacramento deco which was really like a flash to the past. Don't forget to look up at the ceiling. We spotted some old merry go round figures like Goofy, other cool shapes and beautiful stained glass; great for conversation. The bun that the burger and pulled pork was served on was a little soft and did not offer much support when trying to bring it up to your mouth; but I guess a good burger is a messy one. We loved this place!

What a bad deal. I was in old sac on Sunday and walked by this place. I thought a good philly sandwich was sounding good. I get inside and sit down and the waitress said that is for m-f menu. It didn't say that on the menu outside. So I had to settle for a cheap hamburger $10.00. Then when we ordered the waitress forgot half our food and was very unpolite. She didnt even ask me if I wanted anything like mustard or anything. After we ate, the food was ok nothing special. She gave us out bill. I took it and went to the front. The manager was sitting there , so were other employees standing nextt to a cash register. I asked them if I could pay for this here. They told me no. I then looked at the manager and asked the question again. She said she would. I expressed to her about our service. She came back and said she would take our sodas off the bill. I said thank you and told her I wouldnt be back

My boyfriend and I were looking for Fat's restaurant in downtown Old Sacramento from many years ago and found out that it close down 4 years ago. I was very disapponted. Nonetheless, we tried this restaurant thinking it will have the good food that Fat's in Folsom have. Boy, it was a very big disappointment. We ordered meatloaf and stir-fried chicken. They were both horrible. The meatloaf as we were told by the waiter, is the best. Not! It was rubbery and tasted like it came from a can. The stir friend chicken was blah. No flavor and very bland. We wish we stopped by Fat's in Folsom instead than go to Old Sac. Our waiter was very nice so we give the 1 star to him and the other nice staff at the restaurant.

I'll start by saying had I not been starving I would have walked my burger into the kitchen and gone Gordon Ramsey on the chef who allowed my food to leave the kitchen. The bun on my burger appeared to have been soaked in grease before being smashed by an iron. Top and bottom buns were literally 1/4 inch thick combined. On top of a smashed bun, if I pay over ten dollars for a burger, I expect real lettuce not the shredded iceberg lettuce found on cheap fast food burgers. The drinks were a joke, not only were the martinis lacking in alcohol, but for 8.50 I expect my glass to be full not half full. Had I not taken tiny sips my drink would have disappeared faster than a shooter. Total rip off!!

outstanding food and SERVICE and we'll come back again. The slamon was terrific; the meatloaf was even better with a mushroom sauce. No fat, no bone chips, no gristle which is typical of many places that serve trash meat as meatloaf. The only major problemis the lousy city parking on Front St that squeezes you into muniscule spaces. IDIOTS of sacramentopiled on parking spaces that are barely wide enough for motorcylces!. I've squawked before but STILL NO RESULTS. Fortunately for us, we had a handicapped sticker which gave us more room--but not much. Service was quick and fast Wide variety on teh menu.

It was Mother's Day so obviously everyone and their mom were also eating brunch in the novel, dusty cobblestoned attraction of Old Sac. Our first choice was the other Fat restaurant next door to the FCB&C, but they were all booked. Luckily, FCB&C was able to seat us within 10 minutes. Their breakfast plates were tasty and they know how to poach an egg properly. I had the Number One which was 2 eggs your way, Fat's signature potatoes, and choice of bacon or apple sausages. I opt for the apple sausages-- yum! If their soup of the day is ever Potato Pepper, I highly suggest ordering it. It is thick and has a cheesy chowder consistency. Our waitress was very prompt and amiable. Because it was such a busy day, the bar did have somewhat of a lag, and it soon became evident that ordering mojitos and bloody marys was not a great idea. Btw, the bloody mary I ordered was missing any kind of garnish and it also lacked that certain yumminess that comes with a fine balance of spicy, salty and medium thick liquid consistency. Not many places can get this right. What they did get so very right is the mojito.. it was very light and delicious... not too rummy and not too sweet, but light and springy... just what mojitos are supposed to be.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and decor; beautiful stained glass. Food was pretty good. I recommend the Fat City Cafe salad. My mom's tequila lime tri tip was tough, but she liked the marinade and garlic mashed potatoes a lot. Raviolis are served with two sauces- tomato and cream sauces. Sourdough rolls were yummy. The chocolate decadence cake was too rich for me; it was dense like a flourless choc. cake. The vanilla cappuccino was a perfect end of the meal. If I'm in Old Sac again, I'll return. The appetizers looked really good. So maybe next time I'll just grab a drink and share apps. But I would definitely recommend Fat City for dinner too! The table next to me ordered Pot Pies and they looked so good with big puffy pastry rising way over the dish. Also I heard that the french onion soup is excellent. The spicy chicken tortilla soup is too spicy!

Was here Dec -05 for the Sacramento Marathon. Decided to come to Fats Cafe for lunch because I heard so much good things about Fat's restaurant. This one is located in Old Sacramento. I think it was on a corner, it was quite large. They had a local brew here that was good and the banana creme pie was good too! (see under my pictures). If you want something good and affordable without the wait, I recommend this place.

I am sitting here at this very cool bar/dive in Old Town Sacramento as I write this review on my blackberry!! . It came highly recommended by a local and so I tried it and I was not disappointed. I ordered the signature Fat City Sandwich and it is delish! How can you go wrong with turkey and pastrami together with swiss cheese in a grilled sour dough bread topped with tomatoes and shredded lettuce. I am happy right now. The order came quickly not even 8 minutes! Try this bar when visiting Old town sacramento! Only thing missing right now is a wifi connection! Its hard to do this review on a blackberry!!!

Buyers beware! I went here yesterday with a group of people. The food was mediocre and the service was about the same. However, my big gripe with the place is payment. My friends and I wanted to split the check between 2 debit cards and some cash. The server told us no problem. We were supposed to pay a total amount of $89. When I checked my account the next day, I saw that we were EACH charged for the entire bill. Despite the fact that I signed an authorization for only $35 and my friend signed for $50, and the rest was payed in cash, we were each charged the total bill on our cards! When I called and asked for this to be fixed, I was told that they had to look in to it and call me back. Fine. They Called back and told me he wouldn't be able to fix it until their bookkeeper and general manager came in the next day. I told him that was unacceptable since I needed my money today. He said he would call me back. Fine. He called back and said he talked to the General Manager who told him he gets 4 or 5 calls A WEEK about this problem!!!! He then said its my banks fault because they took the entire amount out and that it would be fixed eventually. I called Bull$^%&! on that one since the restaurant is the one who initially puts the amount in. Anyhow, this issue has been a huge hassle and is still not resolved in my mind. I think they essentially have stolen my friends and my money...even if they eventually do give it back. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN IF THIS IS HOW THEY CONDUCT THEIR BUSINESS.

Servixe was prompt & courteous. I had a glass of syrah and housemade lasagna which was well worth the special price. It was a late Tuesday night and most of the shops in Old Towne were closed so I was happy to find this place open after a four hour road trip.

First time coming here and for a weekday is was a busy day. Brought my Mom along and she had the Chicken Chow Mien and I had an Italian dish. While my pasta dish was so-so my Mom's Chicken Chow Mien was a little too salty. The wait person we had was very attentive and the service was great. Don't know if I will come back here when in Old Sac. again when there are so many other restaurants scattered so close to downtown.

Awesome restaurant in Old Town. Great decor, ambience and general feel. The crab/artichoke dip is TO DIE FOR!! Best thing I have ever tasted.. The pasta dish that I got said that it was spicy and it was not and that is the only reason for the less than perfect score. Seriously, go and try that crab/artichoke dip, it really is AMAZING!!

One of the best restaurants in Old Sac, but of course most of them are not so hot. Service was prompt and friendly, food was decent if not overwhelming and a bit overpriced. The dinner rolls have got to go though, they were as bad as any you might have the displeasure to take one bite of and then avoid at any Denny's. C'mon guys, if you want to be a swanky place, at least upgrade the bread. Overall an ok experience, but the best thing is the decor, not so much the food.

went in here for husbands birthday, got there kinda late (around 8 pm). got seated right away, which for a saturday night impressed me. i looooove the decor, all the beautiful stained glass, so pretty! started with the sampler appetizer, crab dip, potstickers, and fried green beans. the pot stickers were yummy, the green beans delicious, and the crab dip, while tasty, had a sorta funky smell that husband couldn't get past to eat it. his loss, more dip for me! daughter and husband got the 2 for $22 dinner. started with reeeeally good beef barley stew. husband got the meatloaf, which he said was excellent. daughter got the fried cod, and they were nice enough to let her get fruit instead of cole slaw. the fish was crispy and tasty. i got a bacon cheeseburger. it was very good, not outrageous, just a very tasty burger and perfectly crispy fries. for dessert, they brought out vanilla ice cream with hot fudge as part of the 2 for $22, and because we told our very nice waitress we were there for husband's birthday, she brought out a HUGE piece of banana creme pie with a candle. I personally can't stand that stuff, but husband said it was excellent. all in all, a very pleasant experience. it took two hours from the time we went in till we rolled out, but it was nice to sit and enjoy our dining experience.

Went there Saturday night with the Birthday Special coupon.. once i showed proof of my birthday, we were set. Hubby opted for the meatloaf and ceasar salad, both of which were okay. I had the pulled pork, not very attractive to look at, could have been sitting under the heating lamp for a while, the melted cheddar was not appealing to the eye at all,,, but once past that, tender, tasty pork, nice soft bun and extra BBQ sauce helped. Could have used more sauteed onions, tho. As to the Banana Cream Pie that came with the B-day special, that went to hubby as i don't have a taste for it. If you are going to serve that as your signature dessert, then i suggest using RIPE bananas! My hub chose the chocolate decadance cake for my dessert, and it was good, but it would have been REALLY nice if both desserts showed up at the same time instead of 10 minutes apart. Despite all the wait staff, service was not up to snuff. Anyway, it was good for a "buy one-get on free" for the Birthday in November!!!.

I always have mixed feelings about venturing to Old Sacramento where Fat City is located. It is, on the one hand, a charming and mostly authentic evocation of the Old West. On the other hand it is largely a godawful tourist trap with too many cheesy shops. Fat City is not one of these. The restaurant fits in well with 1800s brick facades of the buildings. The food is pretty much of the pub-type which is not too exciting but is done well at reasonable prices.

Dont waste your time service was terrible, food overpriced and not good. Meatloaf was dense, braised short ribs was one rib 75% fat. Only good thing was garlic bread. Yuk

Toto, I have a feeling we aren't in San Francisco anymore. No Dorothy, you're exactly right. We're right in the heart of ole' hee-haw Sacramento. Get 'yer salt water taffy, candy apples, souvenirs and dinner right here folks! Walking around in the "neighborhood" of Old Sacramento I was almost expecting an old west reenactment. Fortunately, there was none. But there were lots of slightly overweight, middle aged men walking around with cameras wearing Teva sandals and Hawaiian shirts. I ducked into this place with new coworkers (can you call your manager a coworker, technically?). The Old West isn't my skeeze--the "ambiance" was a little tacky in my opinion--but whatever. Chicken sandwich was OK; it was a nice change from Holiday Inn food. Service was prompt. I'll second Dana on the "company"rating, as it was indeed, lovely. Yippie-kai-oh-kai-eh!!

Ate here for lunch yesterday with two kids and four adults. They have a kids menu with a crossword puzzle and other games printed on it. Each child received a packet of 3 crayola crayons. Their kids waters come in little styrofoam cups with lids. The lid is pretty useless because when my niece tilted her cup the water just ended up all over the table. Hmmm maybe shorter straws so they don't have tilt it would be cool, just cut the straws in half. I ordered a portabello mushroom sandwich and it was DELICIOUS!!! My brother had a bite and kept asking if there was meat in it because it was way too good to NOT have any. My garlic fries were great too but my husband was jealous that mine had way more garlic than his. Everyone seemed to like their food and they have a ton of beer to choose from. The service was great, our waiter was always easy to find. I'd come back here again.

Why lie it was just ok. The best thing about the place is the staff. They are all AMAZING and Good Looking too! Don't get me wrong the food was ok. Probably the best place to eat in this slowly dying mall. My burger was over cooked and the bun super dry. The fries rock. If you are in this mall and need a place to eat and drink come here. At the very least get a plate of fries a nice cold beer and enjoy the "eye candy" for dessert!

My friend and I came here for lunch today. Her Fat's Cafe Salad comprised mostly of little pieces of chopped up romaine lettuce, and lacked a lot of the goodies (bleu cheese crumbles, apple, bacon, avocado, glazed walnuts), the menu claimed it had. My sausage scramble was so bland and boring that I had to douse it with good ol' tabasco. Our server was nice. I liked how he kept refilling my coffee without me having to flag him down. Average tasting food, decent portions, but slightly on the pricier side. I might contemplate coming here if I'm in Old Town, but it's not a place where I'd drive out of my way for.

Not a terrible place but surely not a place I would ever go out of my way to go to. I have been here twice, once in the middle of the day for their happy hour stuff and some appetizers, then once for dinner. Both experiences were ok. The food is nothing special at all; overly greasy, and lacking something in flavor but still presented well and is edible enough when you are really hungry. Service is kinda slow and the first time I went our waiter seemed like he didn't even want us there and really didn't want to have to deal with us.

I have eaten here twice and enjoyed it both times. The prices are fairly reasonable for a touristy area. The food was excellent. The mac-n-cheese I ordered for my kids was not that awful generic stuff served at some restaurants so I was happy about that. The atmosphere is also nice. I would definitely eat here again.

Horrible service! Went here for New Years and expected it to be busy, but didn't expect the staff to be incompetent. At 10 oclock, the bar was still not packed, but even with 5 people working behind the bar I still couldn't get service! I spent over half an hour being next for drinks without being acknowledged. People were being served out of turn, I witnessed drinks being poured that sat on the bar for at least 20 minutes, I'm guessing for a table order, but a waiter never picked them up. I had to go with a third choice beer because a lot of their beer choices were now gone! (I guess they didn't count on people drinking on New Years Eve.) My friend who stepped outside while I ordered drinks was not allowed back in because management said they were full, yet after 7 more people left, they still wouldn't let him come in. Some girl had to finish making a sign saying "drinks are only served at the lounge area", then they let about 20 more people in. Really?! It was too full to let one more guy in that already had a drink ready for him, but then suddenly 20 more can come in with out any more people leaving?! This place is extremly disorganized, the staff is unapologetic, except for the security guard, who was actually the only friendly employee in the place. Management of Fat City needs to change!

Best chicken pot pie EVER! My luncheon companions loved their food as well. Per their comments, the french dip sandwich was great with very tasty au jus, and fat city sandwich was delish, especially since they grill the sourdough bread.

PULLED PORK SANDWICH!! Super good! Also had a bloody mary which was totally yummy. Great service, but the tables were a little too close together. My mom and sister shared the California salad and tri-tip french dip, which they enjoyed but I thought was only so-so. But the pulled pork sandwich was FAB!

I would give this place only one star if it weren't for the banana cream pie. It's amazing. And I don't even like pie. I love the ambiance and decor, so I have been back a couple times, thinking maybe it will be better, but alas. The service staff is very friendly and accommodating, but sooooo slow. There aren't many vegetarian options, but as long as there is one good one, I'm satisfied. I ordered pasta primavera (not sure what its called on the menu). It ended up being just greasy noodles that were obviously fried on a dirty grill, and tasted like meat juice. Gross. No garlic bread either, or any bread for that matter. Maybe I'm nuts, but I don't think pasta should be served without bread. The charge to order bread was too high, especially when the gross pasta was already overpriced. I didn't eat more than two bites. The french fries were pretty good, my companion shared with me, and she said her burger was decent. I'll keep going back for the pie, and only the pie. Oh, the hostess is terrible. Terrible.

3.5 stars really. I'm going to go easy on Fat City. It was New Year's Eve. Old Sac was an absolute cluster%$#@. Things were either a) closed, b) super expensive prix fixe, c) cover charge, or d) dress to impress (because when you hang around brilliant men with polytechnic educations, the "dress to impress" concept alludes them). We had no reservations. We walked in at 10 pm and it was a zoo. They seated us, a party of seven, less than an hour later (which should normally sound awful..but it was NYE and we weren't well-planned for the evening). The drinks were kinda weak (my nickname is "Two Can Sam"...weak is a total insult when it comes from someone who already has no smooth endoplasmic reticulum in her liver cells). The service was pretty good considering that they were slammed with NYE people. The food was awesome (but a little overpriced) though. Their Thai chili chicken wings were $#@%ing fabulous and I will just have those for dinner on a return visit. The potstickers were also pretty awesome. Everyone either had a chicken or a steak dish with garlic mashed potatoes...and those were pretty good. I'd go easier on them if the drinks were stronger and the entrees were a couple dollars cheaper. But, nonetheless, this was a happy accident for our poorly-planned New Years. We also finished in time to pay, run out the door, and catch the Old Sac fireworks at midnight (and those WERE pretty sweet). However, if you really want to eat at an awesome Fat-dynastry restaurant, I highly recommend Frank Fat's instead.

Horrible service, decent food. Tip: don't settle for a table in the bar if you're there to eat. Came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and was actually handed my own menus and told to sit at a bar table. The hostess literally pointed to the table as she was leaving to sit another party ahead of us. I was shocked that I was handed menus. Not to mention I had a toddler in my party, so a bar table is a little weird. The table was also freezing because it was right next to the door on a cold rainy day. Of course the bartender is now our "server." Waited 10 mins just to be recognized by the bartender. He finally took our order but I knew this was going to go badly. I asked the hostess if we could have a regular table with a regular server and told there were no tables available right then because there was a wait. Finally our food came and thank goodness that was decent. We ordered the Fat City Sandwich, Garden Burger, and French Onion Soup. Our beverages were both empty and never refilled, we had to ask for silverware and napkins, and request our check twice. Just from watching other bar tables, I would guess their service was just as bad. Silly me, I still tipped the guy! I would go back for the food but the service will keep me away.

Came here with the fam to celebrate Mom's b-day. (I told the waiter it was her b-day before we ordered). Was hoping they would bring her a little dessert or at least put a candle in the one we ended up ordering after dinner. No such luck. Waiter had laringitis and seemed annoyed by us. He was good at "upselling", but I didn't think we were at Chili's? Food was OK. If I ended up here again, would get a salad and the crostini appetizer. The decor is really cute with all the tiffany lamps. I had always wanted to come here while growing up in Sac.

Okay so I have been to Fat City twice hoping the first time was just an off night, but NO! The service there is horrible!!!! I went there with a party of six and asked them to set up another table near us for a party of eight (which should have been no problem since the place was empty). They acted like I was putting them out instead of bringing in the much needed business. For some reason they split up my family party of eight but still charged them the automatic gratuity for a big party. I also had to seat my family as no one helped them when they came in the door. The food was overpriced and so-so. Did I mention the service sucks? Wait staff with no personality and slow. I have heard from several other people that their experience at Fat City was very poor as well. Spend the extra wait time at Joe's Crab Shack down the street.

I had my first dining experience at Fat City today and I wasn't very happy. Initially, I was having a good time. We were seated quickly, I enjoyed the open space and the atmosphere. My mom and I were given ice water right away and our order was placed very quickly. I ordered an Old Thumper English Style beer, a tomato/feta cheese bruschetta appetizer and the spicy cajun pasta. My mom ordered the barbecue burger and fries. We received our appetizer and meal very quickly, it was fast and hot. The food was good but nothing spectacular. There were a lot of flies buzzing around and I don't really know what could be done about that however, it was annoying. We finished our meal and I put a $100.00 bill in the little black book to pay for dinner and waited for change. I waited for change, and waited for change and then went to the bathroom downstairs and came back up and waited for change. Then my mom went to the bathroom downstairs and I waited for change. Then the waiter made an OH face and pointed at me. He began picking up black books and more black books and then he walked around, talked to someone, walked around some more and came to my table. He asked me what I gave him and I said $100.00 bill, which I must say did not amuse me. He went back talked to someone else, then walked away and then eventually came back with change. I don't know if he lost my money but it was kinda of upsetting that we waited longer for our change than for our meal. Which gave me the runs for about an hour.

Touristy, pretty, decent food, decent prices. If you are coming to Sac for a visit and you want the touristy experience here's what you do: Go to the capitol, cruise around downtown and hit the Downtown Plaza, have lunch at the Hard Rock, walk over to Old Town, shop, dinner at Fat City and there ya go. If you want the yocol experience: Catch a movie at the crest, lunch at Queen Sheba's, book shopping at Beer's Books, record shopping at The Beat, bike ride along the river, dinner at Zelda's, drinks at Old Ironsides. DO IT!

Nice interior design. Good friendly wait staff. Mediocre food. My trout was overcooked. The rice was boring. Stingy on the veggies (at least they were cooked right) and the red pepper sauce was pretty tasteless. Not a place to recommend!

I LOVE OLD SAC... I know, a lot of people don't like old sac, but there is really a lot to love. Old sac goes on for miles and miles. Some people prefer old sac because of the aroma of salted nuts in the air... Okay, okay, when I'm covering my mouth and gigglin at my OWN joke it's just sad. I promise you I am uber surprised at the reviews prior to mine. This place was fan-tastic. The gorgeous cherry wood bar was really something to behold. They said that they had it shipped in from some old torn down ghost town back east. The building that housed fat's was floor to ceiling brass! it was really great. First thing's first, I noticed the draft beer right away because it wasn't your average Stella, Coor's, New Castle, and a Fat Tire combo, it was mostly local beers. I settled on El Toro Amber Ale. For you beer connoisseurs (sp?) out there--OMG!! and I don't say omg that often. It was the most fresh tasting, hoppy in your face amber I have EVER tasted. I ordered the sliders. The meat was cooked with parsley, waterchestnuts and onions folded in. ohhh myyy. With little bitty skinny onion rings on top. I felt the same way I did with my first boyfriend in seventh grade..felt up and left wanting more! My mom had a portobella mushroom sandwich with provolone on soft foccacia. The hugest mushroom you've ever seen. (Except that one in the eighth grade with Eddie Williams) I can't say enough good things about this place. In case you are ever up to your neck in Old Sac, stop in to Fat's.

I was never a huge fan of the touristy Old Sac area but they do have a number of eateries that span the range of budget and experience. One of the nicer places is the Fats establishments. Noveau and traditional American fare served up by a Chinese family. This may sound weird but Fat's is one of the establishments that adopted the fusion thing way before PF Chang's and other places became popular. This location serves steaks, chops, ribs, seafood, pastas and other specialties. Definitely in tune with the Old Sac vibe by being located in one of the cities original buildings, a general store.

I usually have to go to Sactown two or three times a year for work, which I think is about four times too many because I hate travelling for work, but I digress. I've been to this spot in the uber-touristy old Sac area a few times and if your hotel is downtown and find youself stranded for eats, this place will do the job with its diverse menu. Nothing special and definately wouldn't be a destination if it was located in L.A. The prices really aren't an issue since I'm always eating there on business. Don't forget the over anxious taffy stores nearby that will try to hawk taffy to you at every point in the old Sac area.

A-Ok Wondering around hungry and close to 8 pm, on a week night, my girlfriend and I walked into Fat City. Both chose pasta dishes. Both were just, well, o.k. Also tried the vanilla bean cheescake, very unmemorable. But we were hungry!

On our little trip to Old Sac, we were wandering around aimlessly looking for a place to eat and this was one of the first places that we came to. Since there was a decent crowd, we figured it was a safe bet. I got the pulled pork sandwich which was really good. It was served on a french roll which started to fall apart towards the end but that didn't stop me...I just grabbed a fork and dug in! LOL. It was served with cole slaw and fries which were both decent. My b/f got the BBQ burger and he said that it was really good too. Minus a star for the tiny beverage glasses. We had to ask for refills about 4 times.

What is more to say? Old Sacramento is the epitome of tourist districts. Its kitchy, its full of 'period' style establishments and the design and fuction has basically no basis in reality. As far as places to go on a work conference dinner, it was pretty much the best neutral spot we could have chosen. Nice service, good design, ok food (except my crab dip had an inch thick crust of inpenetrable cheese) and lovely company. That's it folks. Never come to this place looking for a fine dining experience, but if you're in the mood for work or tourist mode - partake and enjoy!

I pretty much agree with the bulk of the reviews here. Your in Old Sac, and yes it's touristy, so what? I still want a decent meal at a decent price. While our meals were good, they didn't warrant the cost. I had the Fat's Cafe Salad which was good and my fiance the soup salad combo. The salads are very fresh, which is a nice change. However, add in a kid's plate and some teas and we ended up with a $45 pre-tip bill. I kinda felt ripped, $45 for some lettuce and frozen chicken strips?!!?? ... I also felt like we got the 'what are they doing in here looks' from the hostess and our server. Sorry we weren't decked out in our Easter Sunday suits and dresses, but we also didn't roll in wearing Dickies and Nike Cortez shoes. Geeze!

I think it's called Fat's because most things have lots of cheese and/or oil. I paid 14 dollars for sesame chicken meal, but it was just a deep fried chicken breast with some rice and green beans. The other members of my party had a soggy sandwich and an okay pasta. It was pretty empty, too, considering it was a Sunday evening. If paid 8 dollars for these things it would have been OK. But, for 13-14 dollars an entree there are better options out there

I have been to Old Sac many times and never paid any attenion to this place. My experience here was nice. Our waiter Anthony did really well for serving such a large group by himself compared to another eatery we visited. I had the tropical teaser which was awesome and the chicken tacos which were also good.

I had the prime rib sandwich and it was great! It has been on my mind ever since. I even ordered a second one to go. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars its because I ordered a side salad instead of fries, they charged $2.50 extra and drenched out in the wrong dressing. The service was just ok, but that sandwich was amazing!

I really was looking forward to going to Fat City after many years~we arrived a little after 1:00 for lunch. I ordered appetizers, wine, water and quiche/ French onion soup for my date and Osso Bucco (OB) for myself. The appetizers and water never came and I never saw my waiter. He brought lunch and when I mentioned the missing apps he said he forgot- I said take them off my bill to which he replied he never wrote them down. There are 6 occupied tables and wait staff standing around except for my invisible waiter. Luckily the quiche was ok, but the OB was salty and the sauce/Demi glacé was hella greasy-a separating oil slick evident. No layers of flavor except A heavy dose of Lawry's seasoning salt. I was dying for the water the waiter never brought and my merlot had begun to turn. Lina Fat and Family- pull the food and service together at this place! None of the staff stepped in to help out as they were too busy talking- they said my waiter was really busy- he only had 3 of the 6 tables- I swear after the lunch hour rush waiters turn into zombies.

FOOD IS OK FOR A TOURIST TRAP AREA We've been here many times over the past few decades and it amazes me that it's still here. The decor is nice and so is the wait staff. Professional and attentive. The chairs can use an update. Why do we come here? First of all, most of the time you can get a seat relatively quickly. It's good to take a break from all the touristy shops and besides, the restrooms are clean. Secondly, the food is pretty standard and nothing too fancy. I'd stick with what you see people ordering for lunch: mostly burgers and sandwiches. You can't go too wrong with that. I've been here for dinners but that's some time ago and maybe things have changed. Dinners were okay and a bit over priced a number of years ago, but I'll need to update this review if I have dinner there again.

The service was great. We let them know right away that we had a member in our party that could not have ANY gluten. After checking with the chef, we were assured that the pasta was gluten free. This was the only meal she had eaten that day and had a horrible reaction to that food about six hours later. So, while my salad was so-so, and the chicken sandwich was okay...when my employee has a violent reaction to that, it really soured our experience. The bar is amazing with the huge wood mantle, and the friendliness was nice.

Food was well prepared and presented. Sea bass was delicious but portion was ridiculously small. Bus boy was on it, kept water full and cleared promptly. Wish he was our waiter because she was horrid. Had to find the waitress so we could order. Had to ask for bread, not friendly at all, she didnt even mail it in to our table, bad bad bad. If u own or manage this place u need to do some training

Fat City should be called Ghost town cus we were like the only ones eating dinner there on a Sunday night. If you are going to put the word, "Fat" in your business name then the food should reflect how fat you will be if you eat there...lol The restaurant looks nice enough and is clean but we got off on the wrong foot right out of the gates. We waited at the hostess stand for almost 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged. That is a major thing for me as I am all about service. The menu is too eclectic too. Lumpia for a starter but no other Filipino dish on the menu. Stinks of a restaurant that is trying to hard.... The food was just, "Okay." I had the special spaghetti and meatballs and my friend had the fish and chips. Mine was tasty but not even close to being great. My friend didn't finish his fish and chips and later told me it was too dry for his liking. Would I come back? Probably not.

We were very unimpressed with this place. We went there for lunch and the place wasn't very busy. We had a bacon cheddar burger and the fat sandwich, both of them weren't good at all. Although, the fried pickle appetizer was ok. The waiter was nice, but the was the only good part of the experience. This is your typical over-priced mediocre tourist spot.

Food for the masses. Standouts were the freshly baked sourdough bread (complimentary), the mojito (not too sweet and with a generous pour of rum) and the banana cream pie (divine). Everything else was mediocre. It's inexpensive, so a good place to bring a large group if you're footing the bill.

We came here for lunch and it was great! The hamburgers were reasonably large and they were very good. The small Caesar salad was bigger than I thought it would be. My grandmother's waffle was large and looked good and the fruit looked fresh. The service was a little slow but it was good anyways. Overall it was a cute place, with good food and okay service.

We went here because they are offering buy one entree get one free (with State Employee ID) that is running until March 31, 2012 (lunch or dinner ). We ordered the deepfried green beans! YUMMY so tasty- much better than onion rings. We also ordered the Big Fat Lemonade (Light Rum mixed with pink lemonade, finished with a touch of Blue Curacao) very good! The main menu has a good variety. I ordered a dinner salad that was pretty fresh and tasty. My partner ordered a French Dip platter. The fries are beer-battered so very good! The services are great, very friendly staffs. After 1:30 pm for lunch is a perfect time- all the lunch crowds are gone. Easy to find parking. They also validate your parking ticket ($5 off)

I bought a salad that cost $10. It was iceberg lettuce 4 small cherry tomatoes, 2 cucumber slices and boring dried chicken strips on it. No croutons or carrots. Nice restaurants don't serve crappy iceberg lettuce.....you guys have a lot to do to make yourself unique and up to par with better restaurants.

Went here for my sisters birthday (she picked it out) I had read previous reviews and thought I was prepared. NOPE. High prices for very mediocre food. my 12 yr. old daughter and I decided to share the nachos, she insisted on adding the shredded chicken for $4 dollars making the total $15. The portion size was big enough to share but I could not find the jack cheese or the black beans that were supposed to be there but lots of diced tomatoes and olives that were. The amount of chicken we got for the extra 4 bucks was very disappointing , It seemed like just a couple of tablespoons and the chips were soggy- not from the cheese which I would expect but almost like they put the food on a wet plate--eeww! I would expect nachos like these to be on a Dennys value menu and they would still disappoint. I do not recommend this place nor will we ever go back. Server was decent but that cannot over come the blah of the food.

If you're reading this review, you're probably doing your homework and trying to find a good restaurant to try out. In that case, go to fatsrestaurants.com and check out what the current deals/promotions are. My boyfriend and I saw the two for $25 deal and decided to finally use the remaining balance of our gift card. (The local Costco's carry Fat's restaurants gift cards; $80 for $100. This might seem like a lot to invest in a specific restaurant group, but the Fat's have several restaurants around the area and they are all worth trying.) I've come to Fat City Bar and Cafe several times, but most recently, my boyfriend and I came here on a Wednesday night around 7:30 p.m. The restaurant was fairly quiet since Old Sacramento isn't really that busy on a rainy, weekday night. We had reservations anyway and were seated immediately and given menus. (We saw a sign promoting the two for $25 posted on the door, but nothing inside and they didn't offer us the two for $25 menu when we sat down.) We had to ask about the offer, but the waiter was friendly and explained it to us. The two for $25 offer (good until the end of the month, 3/31/11) includes: 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. This deal is really great because all of the dishes are full-sized, not slightly smaller because of the deal or anything like that. We ordered/got: -Sourdough bread rolls (free): warm, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside rolls served with butter. Pretty standard, but they do taste good. -Fried Green Beans (usually $5.95): I have had this before and it tasted just as good as I remembered. You get a fair-sized portion of crispy green beans and a delicious size of spicy, creamy sauce to dip them in. I like to use the sauce to dip the bread, also. -Salmon (usually $18.95): A large portion of teriyaki salmon over a serving of white rice, with some green beans on the side. The salmon was really delicious. The fish was soft and cooked just right, where the edges were even a little crisp. The fish tasted fresh and the teriyaki sauce was just right and light, not overpowering at all. The green beans were nice and crisp, not wilted or overcooked. The rice was standard, but it tasted really good with the teriyaki sauce. (The fish here is always right on. I came here for New Year's Eve and ordered the special for that night, Chilean Sea Bass, and it was amazing. For those who haven't tried Chilean sea bass, I would definitely recommend it. It's the softest, buttery-est tasting fish) -Ribs (usually $17.95): Each rib was really meaty and covered in a tasty barbecue sauce. These ribs aren't your typical Southern BBQ type of ribs; they have an Asian fusion type glaze which is really good. It also comes with a generous portion of french fries. The french fries were really crispy and compliment the ribs nicely. (During our new year's dinner, my boyfriend ordered a pulled-pork sandwich, which also had a delicious BBQ sauce on it and a side of sweet potato fries. The barbecue items, in general, are really tasty.) -Banana Cream Pie (usually $6.95): This is a must-order at the Fat's restaurants. (Often, if it's your birthday month, they'll give you a slice for free. If you live in the Sacramento area, they often put ads in the paper with a coupon for a free slice of pie.) This is the best banana cream pie that I have ever had. It is huge and every bite is delicious. The pie begins with a crispy, sugary crust covered in a thick layer of fresh bananas. Then comes a generous portion of banana pudding. Finally, it is topped off with a thick layer of fluffy whipped cream. -Cheesecake (usually $6.95): A wonderfully fluffy cheesecake topped with a raspberry sauce and fresh blueberries/strawberry. This is also a huge portion (we took it to go because we were too full) but it tasted great, even at home. This is definitely enough to share between a couple, or even more. Overall, the food here is always really good. I love the ambiance of the restaurant and the bar is fully stocked (I've heard that their happy hour is pretty good too). The only reason I am hesitant to give Fat's the full five stars is because they could use some work on the service. At both of my most recent visits, are servers have been nice, but kind of awkward and didn't really seem that comfortable. It was okay though, the good food made up for the okay service. The two for $25 special is an awesome deal (our meal would have otherwise cost us over $65) and I'll be back soon. Notes: -There is metered parking around the restaurant and after 8:00 p.m., parking is free. -Look online for the current special, like the two for $25 deal.

We were getting married later in the day and needed to meet up with our deputy, decompress and hang out for a while. So we had lunch old Sac. Location, location, location is the comment here. Food was not outstanding but the place was nice and we were able sit for a while, which is nice. Often times restaurants rush you out the door. This one doesn't. Menu is varied standard America fare so everyone will find something to eat.

I love the setting and ambiance of this place way more than I love the food. And, I am saying this after about 3 visits of trying either their lunch or dinner. I want to find something on their menu that's good, but it just never happens. Perhaps the next time I go back I will just enjoy it for what it is, and sit at the old bar and order a drink. At least that's not hard to screw up. The stained glass and wood are a beautiful combination. This place transports you back in time.

This is a hard review to write. I've been here twice in the last few weeks and have mixed reviews! The first time I went was for lunch mid-week. I had the Pork Osso Buco. Honestly, the best thing I've ever eaten. It was amazing... So tender I didn't use my knife.. Incredible. Also, the service was great. (There's a very sweet black lady who seemed to be a hostess/busser. she's wonderful and should honestly be a server.) So about a week later I went back, but it was closer to dinner time. The service was atrocious. The older, balding waiter was just a jerk. I think he decided that, since my boyfriend and I weren't dressed up, we weren't good tippers and he wasn't going to waste his time with us. (Big mistake on his part.) I ordered the Osso Buco again and when it FINALLY came, it was WAY overcooked. So, if you decide to take your chances with this place, dress like a good tipper and I'm sure you'll have a great experience. TL:DR Great food and service, if you look like you deserve it.

Received shockingly poor table service here on July 2, 2012. The food was fair-to-poor. We don't plan to return. It was a Tuesday, about 1:30pm. Few customers. We were not welcomed to the restaurant. The server was not interested in our order. We ordered a salad, along with the fries that accompanied a sandwich. With no explanation, she charged us $6.50 for that salad. We complained about the quality of the sauce on that sandwich (it was foul!), and the server was not interested. A very frustrating and disappointing experience. Extreme caution recommended!

The food is good (classic American comfort). I give it 4 stars. The only issue I have here is the service, which is 2 stars. The servers were plenty nice, just inefficient. We were being served by the bartender which is a really bad business practice. This caused her to do too much work between the dining area and bar. She could not maintain awareness of the guests and so several tables, including ours, were neglected. This wasn't her fault, Fat City should entertain the thought of having a dedicated barkeep, and a separate server for the dining area. Be prepared to wait.

This service today was terrible......the girl who seated us was probably the nicest thing about this place.....the manager seemed unhappy with her job and when she seated 2 ladies she just pointed her finger and said here!!! She was terrible! Then our server who was slow took him 10 minutes to even come to our table......then he didnt even asked if we wanted anything to drink, he told us he'd be back and 10 minutes later (mind you he only has 3 tables at this point) he finally came back and then we were going to order and they didnt serve this and they didnt serve that, it was very frustrating!!! Not to mention we waited over 15 minutes for a bowl of soup, & then the food wasnt all the great either......but the customer service was the WORST!!! they should hire ppl who actually care about there customers!! Ohhh kudos to the buser who was well dressed and very polite! Thats sad that put of a staff of 7 theres only 2 ppl who care!!

The California chicken sandwich is a whole chicken breast in a sandwich the ratio just isn't right. The fat city combo wasn't bad but nothing to write about. The spicy bloody Mary's made the lunch.

This place is ok. It is a bar. Right? So it had drinks and bar food. The french dip wasn't bad. The bartender was really nice and informative. The building is old. And the bar is old. The wood came from Leadville, CO, which is pretty cool. The stained glass on the ceiling is pretty. A cool little hang out place.

I just want to say this is the first time I have ever been here. My hubby and myself were invited for a friends birthday. We had appetizers and they were very good. Then we each took turns ordering our food. The service was excellent. I went to ask for another soda and before I could say anything our waiter said already got it. The food came and everyone was very happy. When we all got done eating they brought the best banana cream pie. Yum yum. I would give our waiter an A plus. I will be back again.....

We had lunch today at Fat City in Old Sacramento. My husband had the salmon and it was good I had the chicken fried rib eye steak. I don't think it was a rib eye it was tough and over cooked. The garlic mashed potatoes had so much garlic that you could not taste anything else. It has been 7 hours and I still taste the garlic. The service was good.

Went to Fat City for drinks & appetizers last night (New Years Eve), place was of course packed but they handled it well -- reasonably quick delivery of drinks & food, very friendly service. We had the fried pickles, fried green beans, mushroom fondue and the seared scallops - everything was delicious and well prepared. Fried foods not oily, breading well seasoned & crispy. Fondue was yum - good cheese and you could just taste the wine. Scallops were amazing, perfectly seared. Also a great choice for lunch or dinner, beautiful old building with a great collection of gorgeous old tiffany style lamps in a fun location in the middle of Old Sac

We decided to take a train trip to Sacramento on a beautiful, sunny Wednesday in March, have lunch in Old Town, which is within easy walking distance of the Amtrak station. There are not too many choices there: either the Firehouse or Fat City. Having been at the Firehouse with a less than stellar experience (to say the least) we opted for Fat City where we had also been once before. We were promptly led to a nice window table and our waiter came to take our drinks order right away.: Lagunitas India pale ale. We told hm that we were not in a rush, so service was a bit sluggish at times, but no worries, we had plenty of time. I ordered the soup of the day, a vegetable soup with ham. It had little character, the veges were very overcooked and while the various ingredients could have found their way into a lovely minestrone, this was more like something one might encounter on a school lunch steam table at the end of the lunch hour. The French onion soup was okay. The deep fried green bean appetizer with an aioli was, to me, quite tasty, though my companion thought that there was way too much crust which she would not eat. The Fat City Sandwich combo with the onion soup was okay. The Prime Rib Sandwich on a ciabatta roll seemed to me like it might have come from a Safeway deli and then reheated. The fries that came with it were very good as was the Heinz ketchup and the sour cream. The "jus" was overwhelmingly salty, enough "melt my teeth". After our beers I ordered a Bloody Mary with Tanqueray gin. It was garnished with everything the bar had to offer, except perhaps pineapple and a cherry :o) but my main objection was the weird tasting mary mix. It has a "peculiar" taste to it, which overwhelmed even the strong Tanqueray. I would recommend that they stay with Mr. & Mrs. T mix and don't try making their own mix. A garnish or a wedge of lime would be sufficient. Summing things up, the Lagunitas IPA (draft) was by far the best part of lunch; nice and cold and well poured. The meal was about what I would expect at a Rocky Mountain truck stop - not terrible, but nothing to write home about. But then, in Old Town Sacramento one does not have too many alternatives. The price for three beers, a Mary and the food items was $80 including tax and tip. Would I return? Maybe, but only if I really needed a cold beer. Peter Klatt Berkeley

In the ever present quest to strike a balance between where my wife and I want to eat and where my kids want to eat, we chose this place. A pretty good choice. My wife had a very, very good pasta. I had tasty chicken tacos. Kids meals were very reasonably priced. I stole a few of the kids fries and they were soooo good. Wife had one of their specialty cocktails, which she really liked. We'd go back. Recommend.

Dinner was good, salad was tasty and the Fish and chips were not bad. The service is why I am giving the 4 stars, our server was not having the best night and he was funny, accommodating and deserved an easy table like us. It was simple, no frills and pretty packed with eaters! The Hostess was a bit sassy, but she got a one liner right back at her from my B-F. Get what you give!

My wife and I had a wonderful meal tonight. Happy hour appetizer and a bar drink. Great Caesar salad and green salad. We spit the rib steak dinner (done perfectly) and finished with their famous banana cream pie and two forks. Excellent service! Nice night in old Sac.

The staff's attention to detail and service is superb. The beautiful interior and overall ambience helps mask the pedestrian menu of offerings. For the price, the food should be great or at least memorable. Sadly, it's neither.

Beautiful old store turned restaurant. The warm sourdough rolls are dangerous! 1 stars for the rolls, 1 for the beer selection, 1 for the building. The food however was pretty average. My turkey burger was missing a sauce listed on the menu (which was actually great because I didn't want any mayo-mix on my burger) and another in our group ordered a salad that stated it would come with cheese but didn't.

Stopped here today after a nice bike ride on the American River Trail. Everything was just okay. Well, my son enjoyed his half turkey and pastrami sandwich and caesar salad, but I was not too keen on the salad selections. And when I asked to have my salad without croutons and with additional vegetables, the waitress couldn't think of any. No shredded carrots? No. What about avocado? Yes. Then she brings me this salad with iceberg lettuce (where's the romaine), croutons, and 1.5 cherry tomatoes (because they were sliced in half). "Oops, he put croutons on that." Then, my bill comes and the $6.95 salad turned into $13 something because I wanted bay shrimp and avocado (and she never stated I'd be charged for the avocado). I mean, damn, I just wanted something more to the salad that wasn't dairy or meat. I really wanted to take home a piece of that carrot cake with caramel sauce, but after paying $30 for a mediocre (and small) lunch, I was cool on spending any additional money here. Will I return? Nope.

Good place to eat. Food tasted more like chain restaurant style like Applebees, but good. Service was nice and friendly. However my wife ordered a Strawberry smoothie, and what she got was orange and tasted more like mango.. When we asked about it we were told it was in fact strawberry and it was pink.. No, it was orange, and it tasted like mango.. Well, they took it off our bill when we said we didn't want it. Price was moderated. I loved the decor. Bathrooms needs an update. Only one that I saw. Would be horrible if that place was packed.. Good place. Probably be back, but I will try other restaurants around Old Town first.

It was the first time I had eaten here and I was not at all impressed. I had the bruschetta and it was bland and way over priced. My friend had a burger and it had gristle in almost every bite. I was generous in giving 2 stars because I did like the ambience and the waiter was nice.

Bad customer service. Waited for water. Almost choked. Asked for my meat on my burger to be well done. Got some charcoal meat. I used to go here more often but I won't be coming back. Sucks because the building is beautiful inside.

Took the girls to Old Sac for the afternoon and decided to eat here. The wife loves the crab and artichoke dip, and it's amazing! (that was the best part of this review) First off, it's afternoon and there are more employees than guests and they made us stand in the doorway for almost 10 minutes. Seated in a tight spot between two occupied tables. (We had a stroller with the infant car seat on top) If you don't want kids in your restaurant, don't post the kids menu outside the door. Other than the $12 dip, the food was blah, chicken dry and over cooked. Not great, and won't be back

With the family visiting the train museum and we wanted to eat somewhere my picky four year old would like too. We decided here after reviewing the menu. The Restaurant was busy and clean. The Hostess was very nice and the wait staff was on it. Mt Wife and I got Ice T to drink for $3.50/EA, yikes! Come on guys.... I ordered the fish and chips and while it was delicious and light , the portion size for 16$ left me wondering where's the rest! My wife got the burger and it was cooked good and decent for the price. My kid had spaghetti and fruit and it was great for a kids meal.

I'm very sad to give this rating, but I'm positive I got food poisoning from the burger I ordered here. Several years ago I first visited Fat City. The next day I severely had the runs. I knew in my heart the two were related. But somehow, we wound up there last night. I had forgotten this was the place that had left me poisoned before. It wasn't until we were sitting in the restaurant that I had a moment of deja vu where I remembered. It would have been okay though. Fat City could have remedied themselves. But when my boyfriend and I both woke up with the runs this morning? I don't think so. We both had ordered the exact same thing - a bacon cheeseburger. It tasted good at the time. It looked cooked all the way through. The sauce was great. The bun was tasty. But . . . I prefer not to end with food poisoning. :-/

Loved the historic charm, and the Crunchy Chicken Tacos were very tasty. Also appreciate their choice of being a farm to fork restaurant. Enjoyed an impromptu conversation with the owner, Jean. She was friendly and made the experience even more memorable.

Great building and they decorated it well, but that's where it stops. The staff is apparently untrained and Cleary doesn't care. Most of the food is O.K. at best. Could be a great place but id say skip it unless the other area restaurants have a long wait.

Walked in at 6:30p on a Saturday and asked for a seat for 5 people. Said they couldn't seat us with open tables around. Didn't give any explanation or any options or other alternatives. Very disappointed and will not be coming back. If I could rate at zero stars I would. Too bad Fats, you missed out on a very large bill.

Looking at the recent reviews seems as if this place is going downhill fast. My wife, daughter and myself experienced a very poor quality of food that was somewhat pricey. All of us agreed it was one of our worse meals we ever had. My daughter had the pork chop (23.95), my wife, chicken fried steak (18.95), and I had the meatloaf (17.95). All were servered with mash potatoes. Potatoes and meatloaf was processed food. The ambience and establishment is beautiful and the waiter was on the ball. The food was ugh. I am not a hater. This just wasn't a very good meal. Not to ever go back again.

We thought the food was great, kudos to the cooks back there, but service was poor. I ordered a draught beer... then like other reviewers, saw it sit there not 10 feet from me for 5 minutes. Then another waitress came up, and while chatting with our waitress, who was somewhere else (in her mind) she grasped my beer and held on to it. My wife rightfully asked if she was helping to warm it up. Then it dawned on them both it belonged to someone, our waitress pointed at me (right to my face) and the gal warming it brought it over and set it down without a word. Like I was bothering them. First time there, had no real expectations. Not a crowded evening, we were quite hungry. Then after about 8-10 minutes some bread came. Not oven-piping hot, but It was quite delicious, but as soon as we split a piece to butter it, our food showed up. My wife and son both ordered sandwiches (pulled pork was excellent, pastrami and turkey was fat and yummy)... so really, the time for the bread was before that beer showed up. All in all I wasn't bitching, and wasn't going to scrimp on the tip, but the waitress, very un-friendly-like, after us having been fully done cleaning our plates of every fry and shred of cabbage, she comes over and slowly takes away all the plates... had to make two trips, no smile, no attempt at cordiality... I mean, I appreciate not being rushed out, but bring us a bill before you clean off the table. My wallet was in my hand. We'd been done a while. There is much night of shopping left out there. So she finally brings the bill, I just hand her the card. She returns relatively quick but no smile, no goodnight, no nothing. So she got a 9% tip, just to round it to an even number, should consider herself lucky. And I'm the type of guy who freely tips 20%+ for good service. Good service these days in places like fast food, and dime stores, I can't grumble... today's youth have no brains, and most managers can't train well, so customer service has gone to hell, but Fat's in old Sac? Come on! Now to top it all off, we get up to leave at the same time as another table did. They had little kids, (mine are 14 and 17 and perfectly behaved)... mom and kids walk right in front of us and pass the shift boss (?) guest-seater (?) and get a mighty "Have a good night"... yet as we pass, I felt invisible. Maybe that's being childish of me, but my kids have been taught manners, and they don't work at no food establishment providing customer service. "The world has gone into the dumper"... he said, and sometimes, he's right. I will most definitely be back, because the cooks have got their act together, but I'll be entering ready to see if that night was a fluke. It the service sucks again, I'll be a pal and bring it to someone's attention.

I came here with college staff and friends on Friday at lunch and the place was filled. The attire is very old and casual which is nice for Old Sac. The menu doesn't really have much choices for big meal, but I think it is alright because as I would prefer it a "fast food" diner. Food was good, my favorite dish was the Fried Green Beans with special sauce. I had the Fried Calamari and I exceptionally like big pieces of calamari, but they had very little pieces and too much bread and dough after it's done. The dish was also too oily and it is as they called "Fat City". I would come back to try something new, but will never get the same dish. Each dish is pricy. I gave a 3!

I came in with another 5 people around 1:30pm for lunch on a Saturday. This place is large and has some unique tiffany glass everywhere. There weren't very many tables occupied at the time we were ordering. They serve breakfast/brunch options until 2pm. I decided to try the sausage/eg scramble with potatoes and a biscuit. I don't know why almost half an hour later that our orders were still not served. While the server was attentive in the beginning, he never said anything as to why there was a hold up when he passed our table numerous times. Upon arrival the plate looked good. The sausage scramble had a nice apple flavor but the potatoes were too oily. Otherwise good. The biscuit tasted great, almost like homemade. A couple of others at the table ordered hamburgers. They were rather large and looked pretty good. They commented to me that they had a good taste, however, the cajun fries were nothing to rave about. The fish and chips plate looked like it was dry. The batter was not a beer batter. The meatloaf plate looked really good! Big pieces with steamed veggies on the side and lots of gravy on top of the meatloaf. Plenty to take home. Prices are decent. My breakfast was only $9.95 (not including the beverage). Centrally located on a corner near all the good shops. I'd come here again and try something different but would hope for faster service.

Well, this was the last place my husband and I had dinner at the end of our 7 week once-in-a lifetime trip in the pacific northwest (and Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.) We were also celebrating out 44th anniversary. We have been to Old Town several times and enjoy walking around there. We actually walked over from our lodging at Embassy Suites. We weren't looking for anything fancy - just nice, relaxing, and good tasting. We did enjoy the ambiance and lovely antique lighting throughout, and our server was pleasant and very helpful in answering questions we had about menu items. His helpfulness ended there - with us having to ask for every coffee and water refill; he was always pleasant. My husband's eggplant parmesan over spaghetti squash was excellent and a generous serving; I believe the price was $11.95. It was a very hot evening, so I ordered decided a sandwich sounded good and got the smoked turkey and avocado sandwich; that comes with fries or cole slaw - and can be upgraded to sweet potato fries, which I did. Without the upgrade, the sandwich was $12.95. Well, my sandwich had lunch meat/deli smoked turkey - NOT "real" turkey as I had thought would be the case. I never dreamed that I'd pay that price for a lunch meat sandwich - and I don't eat deli meats! There were a few (3?) slices, a little avocado, a slice of tomato, and TONS of shredded lettuce. So disappointed. The sweet potato fries were good.

We set at the bar and had a couple of drinks. Our bartender was terrific and personable. the place is clean and this included the restrooms which my wife was particularly pleased about. As a place to stop in as you are visiting Old Town Sacramento, this is a good place to get a drink and rest your feet.

I have been a frequent visitor to this restaurant since the day it opened ... I have loved it for all that time as well ... we went last sunday 2/9/14 and I was really disappointed by the dish my daughter ordered ... it was the Chicken Fried Steak and it was FULL of fat and grizzle ... truly inedible! I had the eggplant parm. and it was great! Please do not let your quality slip ... Please!! Check yourselves with that chicken fried steak!! UGH!!! Thanks for listening! Patti G.

So the experience started out well.. the server we had was awesome as well as the decor. The food however was not impressive at all for the price. If your looking fpr a cool place for a drink and fun this is your place. If your looking for good food I would say it's hit or miss and you might want to try another place.

I had what I think was called a California Chicken Sandwich. The bread was the best part-- really good. Good taste overall, but definitely fattening, and the guacamole was sparse and nowhere near authentic. The fries were some of the best I've had. I'd recommend asking for a side of honey dijon to dip them in if you're into that kind of thing. The server was not super friendly, but all of our stuff was done right, and it came ridiculously fast. They seemed to be very on top of things like refills and handling the crowd. This place has a really nice atmosphere and relaxing lighting. The bathrooms were well-stocked and clean, and there was a separate area outside of the women's bathroom with a couch, so this might be a good place for nursing mothers to come. Prices seemed a little high for what you get, but then it is kind of a touristy area.

Omg what can I say about this place! So delicious! From a simple burger to pasta everything is absolutely fantastic. Try their banana creme pie. Actual sliced bananas, homemade crust and freshly made whipped cream. To die for. They can be a little pricey but in my opinion the food is worth it.

I always have walked by here when I was wandering around Old Sac, but this is the first time I stopped in. A friend and I had lunch on Veteran's Day, so it wasn't crazy busy, but I have no idea what it would be like on a normal afternoon. We were seated very quickly and the waiter graciously moved us to another table when I told him that I wanted to sit a little further from the front door. I had the pulled pork sandwich and she got the California burger (I think). Both sandwiches were very large and pretty good. The fries are what really made the dish though. The atmosphere is what really makes the restaurant though. Very cute with stained glass windows that look out to the streets of Old Sac. Great for people watching.

We needed a quick spot to eat and went looking for somewhere close to our hotel. We landed here. It was around 9 on a Friday. The town is pretty empty at this point and so was the restaurant. It's an old place with decor to match the time of its name. The hostess was friendly. I opened the menu and was appalled by the prices. For the ambience, I wouldn't have expected everything to be so expensive. Most entrées were +/- $20. I ordered the nachos appetizer even though they had cheese sauce instead of real cheese for $10.95. The portion was small, but they were okay though. There's no real way to screw up nachos (except for cheese sauce [that's for the fair]). Chicken can be added for $4! We also ordered the reuben and fries. The fries were great. The reuben not so much. I didn't try it so I can't speak to that but only half was eaten and the rest left behind. Our server was nice. They have a full bar and a menu of specialty drinks.

Been wanting to enjoy this place based on all the rave about it on yelp. Plus they are connected to the other dats cuisine but in ally dining here I was not impressed. The food was decent although I could have just went to Denny's for the greasy potatoes and the dry biscuit. The service was lacking even though we were greeted and seated I felt as if the enthusiasm was lacking and they was dead. All in all I probably would not come back for breakfast or brunch.

I have a party of 9 so we were sat in the private dining room after 15 minutes of NO ONE taking our drink order and asking the hostess TWICE to send someone out way we decided to leave. I would think that a restaurant that only had 3 tables cool would need some business but i guess not. We are now next door and have been here 1 minute and our drinks are on the way!

We were very impressed by everything at dinner. The service was fast, friendly, and accommodating. Of course, the restaurant's rich antique wood and stained glass were beautiful too. But now, for the food. The menu had a nice variety of options. We opted for the paper shrimp appetizer, the house salad, shrimp and grits appetizer as a meal, and the barbecue pork sandwich. Everything was excellent, but the paper shrimp stole the show. They were cooked to perfection and the dipping sauce really complimented them. The shrimp and grits were the best we have gotten outside of the South!

I cannot believe anyone would give a 5 star review of this place. We walk in today for lunch. Get seated right away. Score! We wait ... about 15 min for anyone to come up to us. First, the busser comes out and brings up three waters. HE GRABS THE GLASSES BY THE BRIM. GROSS. FIRST FAIL! We wait another ... oh 10 min ... the waiter finally comes up. Doesn't introduce himself and starts commenting on one of my tattoos. Says it looks like an "octopus" ... um, that's Hello Kitty dude, but good thing you wear glasses. He doesn't ask us if we want anything besides water, hello serving 101. SECOND FAIL! Then we get our food. HORRIBLE. The only thing that was good was my boyfriend's clam chowder. I ate most of that. I got the fat's sandwich combo. The mayonnaise was so gross and the corned beef was horrendous. My stomach hurts so bad. My Aunt got a small salad with an upcharge of two bucks for seriously 3 slivers of chicken. She was so confused. Joe, our server, never once asked how things were, if the food was okay, never checked on us. And I saw the manager at the bar eating his lunch at 1:30pm ... good job dude. NEVER AGAIN!

I really don't know what keeps this place open. Bartender is rude, doesn't want to help people, and he's been there for 20 years Servers take their time coming to your table and the food is just ok, nothing to rave about Avoid.

I went here for dinner with my husband, son and son's girlfriend last week. We were looking forward to a nice dinner before watching the Christmas light show. The dinner and experience was disappointing. My chinese chicken salad did not live up to it's name. Lettuce appeared old, brown around the edges. There was very little chicken and nothing else on it to speak of. I was done with it after 2 bites. Everyone else was just as disappointed with their selection. The bruschetta was served unassembled - did not care for that or the flavor. Our table was too small to serve 4 adults dinner. My french onion soup was very good. The rest did not come close to meeting expectations.

Currently sitting at the table - the waiter is a sad excuse for anything remotely resembling customer service - doesn't check on table - doesn't have any service skills - says you can substitute nothing, per the chef - Denny's substitutes for gods sake - mediocre at best - food was really bad - special ribeye was slathered in a salty sauce - tried my friends meatloaf and I honestly don't know how he got it down - my prime rib sandwich was filled with what looked like chopped pork but tasted really bland - I didn't even eat it. The waiter never really cared too much - took off one steak from the meal and the guy who I assume to be the manager just stood around - never checked on tables or came to see why we sent a steak back. The employees all seem to have this dreary "I don't give a damn" attitude and it shows in what they put out - service sucks!

We were planning to eat here based on the close proximity to our hotel as well as the menu options. Arrived at 9:18 pm on Friday and was informed that they were not seating anyone because they close early when it's slow. They were supposed to be open till 10 pm. If things are so slow on a Friday night (in the summer!), why turn away customers?

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner Saturday night while vacationing in Old Sac. We were seated right away near a window, which was cool. The waitress took her time getting to us. I ordered a water/sierra mist. The waters came and the sierra mist took at least another 10-15 mins. Food was decent. I got a chicken caesar salad- which was good, although the lettuce was a bit soft for my liking, and a side of french fries. My bf got pasta carbonara and said he though it was alright. Afterwards he ordered a few drinks, as did I. I watched the bartender make them. She brought out his right away and I watched as mine sat there for 15 minutes..... then she finally remebered, apologized, and brought it to me. After we stated we were done, did not want dessert etc... it took THIRTY minutes to get the bill brought over. We asked for change, when I received the bill back there was my 20 dollar bill still there and 3 singles... Maybe she thought I had accidently given an extra 20 and had forgotten in the 10 minutes it took her to cash it out that I wanted her to break it for change. Over all it was a so-so experience with not so bad food and subpar service.

The food is good..4* the service is a 2*. My favorite is the tequila steak. I went with the chicken breast this time, that was really good. Love the ROLLS, and the banana cream pie! The service here has always been less then average. One can hear other patrons complaining too. takes a good 15 minutes to figure out who the wait person is. People going to hostess to request check, etc.

Stopped in here for froofy drinks during Time Travel Weekends in Old Sac. Adult Root Beer Float was awesome, Orange Creamsicle not so much. At $8 apiece, prices were average/reasonable. French fries, however, were scrumptious. They were the crispy crunchy kind, super rich and fried tasting.

Worst coffee ever. One black coffee for $3.25???? Are you kidding me? This is what happened...driving to Sacramento from Lake Tahoe, I really wanted to enjoy the weather, explore the city and just get a nice cup of coffee. I walked into this restaurant and was a little surprised as I thought it would be more of a cafe than a restaurant. Well, it's a restaurant. Anyway, after the girl, that apparently is supposed to greet you when you walk in, just looked at me waiting for me to say something, I ordered my coffee to go at the bar. Got the bill and thought, this must be one hell of a coffee. Since this isn't a cafe, there weren't any sleeves for the cup. I barely could hold the cup in my hand, because it was so hot. Still...anyway, maybe it's worth the trouble. Nope, not so much...I threw it out right in front of the store. Bad, bad coffee. Bad service and way too expensive.

Since I am a picky eater, there wasn't anything on the menu I could eat without altering a great deal. I chose to get the turkey burger, plain, cheese and BBQ only. I must say that it was quite good. Turkey patty was very moist, bun was sourdough, grilled with butter and garlic, and the fries seasoned very nicely. Server/bartender was friendly, services were somewhat slow for a week day, though not very many people in the restaurant. However, we did have a nice lunch and continued our shopping.

Decor is dirty and needs updating. We waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order. Napkins and silverware another 20. Our food came out an hour after our arrival. The food is good but slightly over priced.

My husband and I had brunch at Fat City. We waited a short time for a table and had coffee at the bar. When we were seated, a waiter appeared quickly and took our order. It was a short wait for our food. I had the sausage scramble and wasn't pleased. The eggs were browned - dark brown, just short of being scorched. I would have complained if anyone had ever shown up to ask if we needed anything. Our coffee cups remained empty until almost the end of the meal. Finally someone showed up and filled our cups and vanished before I could ask for cream. Chairs were uncomfortable, too. Won't be returning.

Service took forever and some of the food was obviously unfrozen with the microwave. I would not recommend it. Waited over an hour to get the food.

I'm surprised to see this place has a 3 star overall rating. We came in around 12:45 during the lunch rush. We were seated and greeted promptly. Our server, Joe, came by and took our order and had a very friendly demeanor. The French onion soup was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful without being salty. The fat city sandwich was delicious, as well as the chicken and vegetable stir fry. Everything tasted fresh. I will definitely be back!

I give this restuarant No Stars whatsoever, sad that I have to give them one! I ordered a cheeseburger and my partner ordered lamb. HORRIBLE FOOD. My server asked how I would like my burger cooked, and I said medium. Not only was the burger a thin strip of frozen prepackaged cheap patties, but the burger was well well well done with a rubbery texture. I told the server it was not medium, they cooked the meal again, and the burger came out the same. Disgusting. They shouldnt even ask people how they want it cooked. Only people that like fast food burgers for high prices would like this burger. My partners lamb seemed weird as well, and the mashed potatoes were cold. Their prices are too high for the quality of ingredients.

This place is a candidate for restaurant impossible. They used stale and moldy bread that was of low quality. The dressing is not homemade, but a low quality very mayonnaise tasting ranch dressing. Overall the salad was bad and the sandwiches were bad. The waitress was good.

Expected a lot more flavor and service from a restaurant where everything is ala carte. You pat for the atmosphere and history. Ordered the, "jambalaya", wow, we have had better Mac n cheese. The mojitos were ice water with mint leaves and a splash if rum. Manager didn't give a darn about our complaint. Paid $80 for cheesy jambalaya and a garden Louie salad with a few pieces of what appeared to be crab. So many other restaurants in old town with less pricey character and real good quality food. We will not be going back to the fat.....all it did was thin our pockets. Gave it one star for being there and one for the busboy.

the service was a bit slow at first (we didnt meet our waitress until 5-10 min later but it was really busy so thats alright. Eats: -Sourdough rolls (while waiting for our food) -French Dip Sammach with *substituted* garlic fries (usually comes with reg fries) -Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and green beans -2 tropical paddles (non-alcoholic) Bill ran around 45 dollars, tip included. The service was slow but friendly so good enough and we really liked our meal. It was incredibly filling (large portions) and tasty (chicken fried steak gravy was soooooo good!) We liked the tropical paddles so much that we went to the grocery store afterwards to pick up some pineapple juice!

A group of us arrived at Fat City around 3:45pm after an 85 mile bicycle ride from the Bay Area. We were ravenously hungry, but the restaurant only serves appetizers between lunch and 5pm when dinner service starts. The food was ok, but nothing remarkable. I was charged more for my pot sticker order than the price indicated on the menu, and those pot stickers, garlic fries, and iced tea came to $22 including tip. Too much money for too little value. I won't be back.

Pretty decent joint. food wasn't impressive, but it wasn't bad. The place is kinda small, proportions were good though. Service needs improvement, I think the waiter came to the table a total of 3 times.. took the order, brought the food and brought the check... and the place was slow. My burger was great, but I don't think I'll ever come back here

This is one of those places that can get away with mediocre food and service because of its prime location. I had the Bourbon Barbecue Burger with fries and I added guacamole to it for $1.50. The fries were actually the best part of the whole meal. With a little salt they could easily be some of the best fries I've had. The actual burger itself was good. It needed to be seasoned a little more and could have gone with less grease but over all it was good. The bun was close to stale and fell apart easily. The lettuce was not fresh. The guacamole was nothing special. I have certainly had worse but for the price it was mediocre at best. If this was anywhere else it would be out of business. There just wasn't anything I would go out of my way for. Especially the service. She didn't tell us her name and she didn't highlight anything from the menu. She basically took our order and dropped off the check. Again, I have had worse but she didn't go out of her way. I gave her 20% because she didn't do anything to warrant less than that. I'm guessing she didn't receive the best training. Overall assessment is that I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There are better places in Old Sac to eat.

Three stars for the service ! But the California Chicken Sandwich was disgusting . The guacamole literally tasted and smelled like cow shit. (I am not a picky person what so ever ) but I could not take it . If you go here , STAY away from the guacamole!

Came here with a group of people this past Saturday. The mushroom burger was pretty on the spot. In fact, we dug it. The only thing we didn't like was the wait staff was a little slow to respond. Subsequently, 4 stars.

Fat City was ok, but just ok. It was neither note-worthy, nor was it terrible. My server was super friendly, but he had too many tables for one waiter, thus our service was predictably slower than it needed to be. My Wee one ordered the kid's burger; I ordered a Mojito and the chicken tacos plate. Then we ordered a Mudd Pie for dessert. The Mojito was one of the best I've ever had. Seriously-it is in the top two! So cudos to the bar tender. The Kid's burger was a sad, plain patty on a boring bun. The fries on my kid's plate were fresh and crispy, she said they were very yummy. My tacos, sadly, were bland and lackluster. I actually had to salt them to make them taste like anything. They were not bad ( the flavor was just bland), they were "just tacos". The lettuce on my plate was dried out and rusty: I consider that a Cardinal Sin of commercial kitchens. The Mudd pie was very good. We both really and truly enjoyed it. Alas; all-in-all, I very likely won't be back for a second meal. This really is one of those restaurants that relies on tourist first time (and only time) business. Sit at the bar, order drinks and dessert, and enjoy a meal elsewhere beforehand.

I have been here a few times and always enjoyed the food and atmosphere, although I do miss the carrot cake they no longer offer. Note: This review is from February 15, 2015, but it seems to have been saved as a draft rather than posted then. I am not sure why.

First time here and we really enjoyed it! OMG food was awesome and the service from Mike was 1st class!! We order the fish and chips....don't forget to ask for the malt vinegar bc yes they do have it! And the crunchy chicken tacos entree......definitely delicious! The place is extremely clean and beautiful! We ordered our food and didn't have to wait long! Thank you Mike for our first visit because of your great service we'll be back!

For me, Fat City rates somewhere in between the small, cheap, snack shops like Candy Heave and the Spud Shack in Old Sac and the higher priced, fine dining establishments like The Fire House and 10-22. I would say I have been here a few dozen times, mostly due to the convenient location. Long story short this place is a restaurant / bar with decent food and reasonable prices. I personally enjoy the old fashioned decor but it is always far too loud inside. 9 out of 10 times you are here before dark the sun is glaring in your eyes or a table-mates. The service, for me, has never been anything better than mediocre. The prices are only slightly higher than those of a Chili's or other chain restaurant. The drinks, however, are pretty good.

The bacon cheddar cheeseburger that was ordered medium came out a dry and flavorless well done. The Caesar Salad was ordered with the dressing on the side, but came back tossed with the dressing. I ordered the angel hair pasta tossed in pesto, olive oil and tomatoes with the side of garlic bread. I had to ask for additional olive oil because it was so dry. Also the tomatoes had no flavor so I pushed them to the side of the plate. So much for the Farm to Fork capital. I would not come back except as an American version of Gordon Ramsey to teach the short order cooks to really learn how to make food. I was disappointed because the owners of this establishment have a good reputation in the food community. You are better to take a short drive down to Mid-town and eat at any number of great eateries.

We got there as the place opened. A sign said the dining room was closed today, but they were seating in the area right as you enter. It took several minutes of waiting to be seated with no one saying a word to us as we stood there. Finally seated and after a bit waited on, got our drinks and food. The food, should have gone to denny's, would have been cheaper for the same crap. All the employees seemed to be confused and were wandering around like chickens with their heads cut off. I had never been before, but was told it is good, they lied and I doubt I will return.

The service was good, the decor is really neat. We asked the bartender if all the wood and glass was original and he said yes. Its a great place to grab a drink. We didn't order anything to eat, maybe next time. The food coming out of the kitchen looked good.

It was a tradition every summer in my childhood to eat here when visiting Old Sacramento. I recently went back to Old Sacramento after not visiting for about ten years and after receiving horrible service next door I got up and left to go eat here. Always great food and great service! I love the building as well. The interior is amazingly detailed with an old world charm. I have never had a bad meal or bad service here. I think they are due more credit than they get. The decor is fancier than the menu but I love what they offer so I don't get a cheap greasy meal but not anything that empties my wallet. I will always come back here!

Giving it 3 stars because I am in a good mood. Let's see where do I start? This has been a long time favorite which in recent years has begun to fade into seediness. Our server gave a wonderful impression of a condescending twit, the food was dreadful. Since when is bruschetta served in a side dish with Emperor Norton rounds on the side. The tomatoes had no flavor, the basil was minimal-messy trying to finish the job that kitchen should have done. My grandson's Fat City Club was sloppy served with the nasty french fries that look like they have warts. My turkey and avocado sandwich on whole wheat was boring. The bread was dry, the iceburg lettuce was a dominate ingredient-while the turkey was "ok" because I always like Costco's cold cuts. This was served with a potato salad that was gray-eww. Years ago this place was amazing, but it isn't years ago, so save your money!

Horrible service. I had dinner here with a group of 10 on a Sunday, We received our appetizers with no plates to eat them with, so I had to ask a busboy for plates. When we received our dinner we realized we were never given any napkins. Again I had to ask a busboy for napkins, because our waitress never checked in with us to see if we needed anything like plates, napkins or drinks. It made no sense because the restaurant wasn't busy. I was so embarrassed because I was entertaining some family from Italy that day and I could see in their face that they didn't care for this restaurant.

Nice place for a rest after a feisty trip in the museums of old Sacramento! I tried the Chinese chicken salad and my friend the chow mein with shrimp. Nice choice I have to say. They also have glops music playing in the ambience.

Giving this restaurant a solid three stars. We were in old town Sacramento and had five different pallets to make happy. This restaurant fit a little of everyone. It has a very corporate feel, prices fall into medium-range, portions are good. They say they make the hamburgers in- house, that is the route I would probably go if I return. Wife's mushroom and Swiss burger was pretty tasty. 6 oz patty. I got the fats city sandwich with turkey and pastrami. It was decent. I like the fact that most kids entrées or serve with fruit cup. My sons quesadilla was a fairly healthy portion. Service was friendly and they validate up to five dollars for parking.

This is a really fun place to have a meal, right in the middle of Old Town Sacramento. Once the General Mercantile and now a bar and restaurant, the food is heavy-duty comfort and the ambiance is beautifully crafted vintage. Kids' menu provides the usual favorites for the kiddies. I liked my pot pie, which was more like a soup on the inside, but the winner of the evening was hubby's meat loaf. It was so delicious! For a little interesting history, the bar once belonged to The "Unsinkable" Molly Brown, and was transported and reconstructed here. It's Old West without being too kitschy, and if I find myself in Sacramento again, I'll certainly visit again!

This place is bad! Went for girls night on a Friday night, the place was practically empty around 7:30, yet we still waited to be seated for about 5 to 10 mins only for them to seat us all the way in the back room! They literally kept forgetting we were back there. It took 30 mins for them to finally bring our drinks that we ordered. The food was cold and sloppy. The waitress was rude, and the food is definitely NOT worth the $14-20 (average) price per plate. I definitely would not recommend this place.

Wife and I had lunch here. Prime rib sandwich was great as was her pastrami and turkey sandwich. Also had French onion soup, Quantities were very generous, actually more than we could eat. The Reason I only give it three stars was while my sandwich tasted good, it was watery. Bite into it and juice would drain out and splash on the plate. I had to put a napkin under it to keep my shirt clean. Service could have faster. My main complainant was the 10 minute type chairs. They are horrible. Difficult to enjoy a meal when the seating is so uncomfortable.

First of all, I give 5 stars if I'm beyond satisfied with all three: food + drinks + service. The burger and fries I had were delicious. The burger was obviously home-made and the fries were crispy and soft, which is my favorite. Delicious. I had a beer and a martini and both were fantastic. I got to taste the beers before deciding on one (and no, not all places do this which is why I highlight it, so if you ding places for not doing this and then trash talk them, that's on you) AND the bartender, CLAUDIO, was amicable and attentive. The lemon drop had raspberry and was easy to drink, but nonetheless, dangerous. You have been warned. The lemon drop is easy to drink and this does not equate to being light, that ish was STRONG but I can handle one martini. The beer was delicious and Claudio knew what all his beers where, where they came from, etc. He had pride in his work and the restaurant/bar, it was evident. Just this can change one's experience. Talking to Claudio while having a drink and meal at the bar by myself was a pleasure. And the other staff that participated were great too. It's nice to be cared for, and yes, by strangers. All of that goes back to service. If I had a problem with a drink or the food, they handled it. And it wasn't because the customer is always right, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT DON'T GET IT TWISTED, but because what I complained about was really a simple human error and they knew it reflected on them and so didn't have any qualms about rectifying it on the spot. I won't go into detail on this because it doesn't matter. The fact that I pointed out the issue, they handled it with dignity and pride, and then I was happier as the outcome, is what's important. They care. You can't ask for more than that. I will come back next time I'm in the area.

Could have been a good experience, but floor staff is lacking...came in to get a table anticipating my wife and kids to join me. I got a high chair table for two next to the kitchen (really noisy!). Texted my wife and kids, told them i was going to have one beer and we should find somewhere else to eat...too bad, we could have been regular customers if we were treated right...this is a tourist trap...if you come to Sacramento, avoid this place!

-this can't possibly be part of the old Fats' restaurants... Has absolutely nothing in common with Fats in Folsom.. The cost was easily twice what should have been. Order water, and nothing else. I used to go here many many years ago and was very happy. T

Blah....pass... My brother, his family and I, decided to make this our lunch destination while visiting Old Town. We were all quite starving, and stuck with just a limited selection of places to choose from. And being I had briefly remembered dining in here years ago, and somewhat enjoying it, we figured this place should do it. Well, it certainly did not do it for me. At least not this time. We arrived around 1:ish. The place was fairly busy. I went up to the hostess station to as for a table. Since we were with a 10 month old baby with a stroller, they advsd us that we would have to leave the stroller up at the front of the restaurant. We were slightly hesitant to do that, so we just got a table toward the bar area ( with more space) and folded up the stroller. After seated,we were somewhat greeted and quickly asked what we would like to drink by our so called " server" . This guy "server" had the stale personality of someone you would encounter working at the EDD or DMV. No patience, rushed to ask drinks. I took my time, and ended up getting a Guinness stout beer. Everyone else just had water. They have a misleadingly appealing selection of options to choose from on menu. The "server" came back and asked to take our order. I inquired on the meatloaf, and he of course said it was fantastic. I did end up going with that, however opted out on the mashed potato's it comes with and substituted it for more veggies. My brother got some sort of turkey sandwich and my sis in law got a lunch special with a half sandwich and sausage soup. Another server brought us our food. My dish arrived less than appealing. Vegetables looked wilted and were drenched in oil. And the meatloaf....ugh...the meatloaf. Not only was it a lower quality meat, possibly a step of from cat food what I can imagine, but it was COLD all through the middle of it....ugh...Literally a cheap frozen dinner. And I was going to pay $17.00 for that? Um ...no. I had to ask another waitress to hunt down our waiter since he had not checked on us once to see how things were, or to see if we needed anything. He then came to our table where I told him that the meatloaf was cold in the middle. He half ass asked, if there was anything else I would want which I said no. But he really did not go out of his way to accommodate...no real apology or anything...little flipped weazle. My brother and his wife enjoyed their sandwiches, however they all agreed our server was horrendous. Measle tip for the weasle server. Don't think I'll ever step foot in here again.

Stopped in during the Music Festival as I haven't been there for quite some time . Table for two right away , service great , food very good , dessert great (splurging as we have doggie bags to take home) . Just a little pricey but 'OK' for Old Sac . Fatsberry Margarita - 8.5 Iced Tea - 3.25 Fish Special (Salmon) - 21.95 Jamba Laya Pasta - 21 Mud Pie - 6.95 Total - 66.89 (Three star average , really , hey I enjoyed my visit )

Service was fast and courteous. Food was excellent I had the Swiss/mushroom burger with fries. Wife had the Fat City Sandwich with the French Onion. Daughter the Turkey Avocado sandwich with potato salad. We also had the Sweet Potato fries on the side. Everything was excellent. Nice decor, antique gold country feel. Plenty of seating and nice and cool on a hot day . Highly recommend.

My friends and I decided to have a late lunch at Fat City Bar and Cafe on our way back from Lake Tahoe. This restaurant has a pretty good selection of food. They have soups, appetizers, sandwiches, pastas, burgers, and lots of sides to pick from. I ordered the crab and artichoke dip for lunch. Yes, I decided that I wanted dip for lunch. And it was soo worth it. I could taste the crab and the artichoke and the creaminess of the warm dip was perfect. It came with half a loaf of a crispy baguette. I actually couldn't even finish the dip and had to pack it to go. I heard so much about their famous banana cream pie that even though I was full from the dip, I had to order a slice. Apparently, this pie is so popular you can't buy the whole pie unless you preorder it. I wasn't sure what to expect. Sometimes when people rave about a food, I have too high of expectations. But this banana cream pie was amazing. The crust was relatively thin. The bananas were all freshly cut and were whole slices. You can see each individual slice of banana piled up in several layers. It was mixed with a slightly sweet custard. The pie is topped with a slightly sweet cream. I think what really made this pie stand out is the freshness of the bananas. You can tell that it's not flavoring, that there are real fruits. One slice of pie probably contained an entire banana. It's creamy, slightly sweet, and a perfect dessert to end the meal. I don't wander into Sacramento that often, but I definitely would want to return to Fat City and try some of their other dishes.

Visited this location while at a work retreat, and I let the waiter order me his favorite meal; and boy, I was not disappointed! The moment my bourbon Barbecue Burger and Garlic Fries came out to me, I knew I was in for a great treat. Excellent burger and the service was great. Both working waiters stopped by throughout our dinner to check in on us, refill waters without needing to request, and overall provided us a great experience! Absolutely worth checking out!

This place was not a good choice for dinner. Our steak was not good - lots of marbling and the sides weren't great either. It was too loud and way over priced. On our way out , because it is a bar and grill we thought it might be a better choice for lunch rather than dinner as people seemed o like the burgers. I don't think this place would be doing as well as it does without the great location. Old Sac is the best! Wish our dining experience had been better.

Came here for brunch during st. patty weekend so it was busy. As soon as I walked in I like the vibe of the place. The food presentation was good and good portion size. the price is average to the food and drinks. there is a bar and the restroom is down stairs. one star for the good food they served. I ordered chef linda special on the brunch menu. it is corn beef hash with cinnamon belgum waffles. the corn beef hash brown was tasty and the waffles was very crisp the way I like it where its not mushy. also tried the beer batter cod with garlic french fries. the fish was good although cant taste the beer in the batter. the cod was meaty good and the garlic fries was very good loved the garlic bits on top! also tried the corn beef with steam cabbage. this plate is on the healthier bland side with a nice portion size. 2nd star for the the quick seating. 3rd star for the clean bathroom. will be back in the future if in old sac and hungry. wont be back just for this restaurant.

I went here for dine downtown with my family and we tried that. I started with the seared scallops which was delicious but the mushroom and sauce it came with was a tad too salty for my liking. Then I had the filet mignon which was super disappointing because i wanted nice sear marks outside for flavor but nope nothing. Luckily for them the risotto it came with was delicious but presentation was pretty ugly. The coffee creme brulee was pretty good but I love creme brulee to begin with. My dad ordered the sea bass and was convinced it was not sea bass since he thought it was black bass. He was trying to explain to me and the waiter how the sea bass doesnt have this type of skin and he wasn't happy about that. I honestly dont know enough about fish to taste the difference but just throwing it out there. Will I be back? Nope

I ordered the Smokey Shrimp and Grits and when it came the first couple of bites tasted pretty good, the shrimp were good, the few that were on the dish... but then it started reminding me of breakfast grits with a cheese sauce that was overly salty and they'd had a heavy hand on the smoke seasoning. I don't even remember the dessert, other than it wasn't very good either. My friends, they had lunch also and weren't impressed with their lunch or desserts either. Service was good and the wait staff were nice and pleasant. However, over all I'd have to say I'll probably won't be back.

I wish I could review the food, the pictures look great. We arrived at the front entrance and were a little sheepish as there was a lot of waiter traffic between the entrance and the hostess station, with my family in tow i waived at the hostess and was ignored ( i know she saw me)... I than told my wife "apparently we have to be directly in front of the station for service" we took the tremendous 3' walk, and was asked abruptly "HOW MANY" i informed her 3 and she started to pull menus, she then looks at me and says do you need a kids menu, as I say yes (5yo standing there) she huffs and grabs a sheet of paper ( assuming the child's menu), as the phone begins to ring she rushes to grab it and proceeds to have us wait for a booking, 3 minutes later it appears to be our chance for service (wife has already told me "lets just go", however I'm much more patient).. As the hostess is finally going to take us to our table a bar patron (bar butts up to host station) informs the hostess he is unhappy with his service and wants another waiter/waitress to take his order. (Red lights going off in my head, still willing to give it try..... Long day dont wanna think). At this point the manager is walking by, hostess grabs him informs him of the situation, he then rolls his eyes and says " fine I'll take care of them", then walks the other way.... That was our chance to leave, potentially a bad day for them, however i font think I will give them another chance for our service.... GOOD LUCK ALL , and GOOD EATS...

I don't get places like this. Stick a cool name on the label, and have some fancy linens on the table and whoa you can charge anything you want for average plain American food. There is nothing special, different, or outstanding about this food. It literally wouldn't be out of place in a diner and yet the ambiance of the restaurant is so much fancier. It's not a diner by any means, but yet the food is? I don't get how fancy you make the table linens and the wait staff, but a hamburger is a hamburger and mac and cheese is mac and cheese. Unless you add some special ingredients to it of course. There are plenty of more upscale comfort food places that do just that. This place doesn't even bother. Bah.

The only reason that Fat City could possibly be open is because of tourists. There is no way that they have any return customers. The food is the epitome of mediocre. It's not terrible because it is edible. My wife figured it out as all 4 dishes that came to the table seemed way too familiar. All of the food that came out was something from Costco. Kids burger was gray. Mac and cheese was kraft. Shrimp and grits had spongy shrimp swimming in way too much salty ham. There was not a single fresh I thing on our table. Go somewhere else. Service was great but it can't make up for the most mediocre $60 meal ever. At least with a bad meal you can be annoyed that the restaurant doesn't know what it's doing. Fat City just doesn't care.

Tonight I stopped here for a event and it's been a very long time since I visited Fat City. I love the deco and the bar was cool with flat screens for watching your favorite team. It was the appetizers that made me say YUMMM! from deep fried pickles to your pot stickers it was tasty. Staff was always checking at the tables. I did not have a chance to order a banana cream pie but maybe on my next visit will try the dinner menu. Thanks Fat City

Went for dinner with spouse last week. I had a burger, and she had a chicken stir fry. First, I will acknowledge that this place is probably more of a bar, and less of a cafe, and in fact the beer was cold and fine. However, the food left a lot to be desired. I specifically ordered my burger cooked "medium well" after the server asked how I wanted it. It came "medium raw". When I mentioned it to the server, he did offer to take it back, but I had taken several bites, and decided that was enough. Also, I found a small bug (aphid?) crawling out of the shredded lettuce that topped the burger. Kind of lost my appetite at that point. My wife said she enjoyed the chicken stir fry, but I tried it, and thought it tasted bland. Anyway, the place in general is a bit tired in decor -- sort of a Bennigans that hasn't been remodeled since the 80s. Not a bad place to stop for a beer, but I would go elsewhere to eat. I like the Old Town Sac area, so I hope they get their act together.

A tourist trap, plain and simple. Overpriced with bad to average food. 1. "Famous chinese chicken salad" with old, rusty lettuce = $13.50 Disgusting. 2. Kid's mac and cheese = $6.00 Literally Kraft mac n cheese. 3. The Fat City Sandwich - a dripping oily mess = $12.00 Really... Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Strongly disappointed. I was excited to come here with my boyfriend, as I've had good experiences in years past, but lately I'm sad to say I won't be returning. I was excited to stop in for a cocktail and nice dinner. The establishment was not close to crowded and it took over ten minutes before we were seated (mind you there were TWO hostesses). Even though plenty of seats were available, we were given a tiny table in the corner next to a loud, large family but we were starving at that point so we shrugged it off. Our waitress was a little lackluster in personality, but she was professional and attentive. My mojito was watery and tasted funny, honestly the water they gave us was better. We split a ceasar salad to start off with and 20 minutes later we were given rolls (honestly the best part of the meal). The ceasar salad was pretty standard, pub-quality at best. For our entrees, my boyfriend ordered the Ribeye and I ordered the angel hair pasta with garlic bread. The pasta was drowned in pesto, cold and the bread was literally black on the ends :(. I looked over at my boyfriend's steak; the portion was sizable but the cut was ATROCIOUS. It was covered in fat and served practically room temperature. I realized the joint was pricey, but THE bill came out to $100 which I would have been FINE with if the service and food quality were up to par. I highly do not recommend for dinner, lunch or drinks- at best you can expect to get a decent snack or dessert (if you don't mind waiting).

The service was good and the environment was nice. There's a very attractive looking bar. The tables around with good seating around. The difficulty for me is, I felt like I could get the same kind of food for about a third to half the price. It wasn't anything special or fancy and I could get in a normal diner. For the price that I paid, I wish I would've gone to one of the more highly recommended restaurants in Sacramento.

I came here for dine downtown with my family. So we all decided to order off the menu. Service was a little slow, maybe because of dine downtown? The bread was mediocre. I like that it was fresh baked but some batches were not all equally the same. I enjoyed my scallops as my appetizer. However, when my seabass came out, my dad told me it's not seabass and it's stripbass. We addressed this issue with the waiter and he says it is. He followed up, and they said it is. My dad says he knows his fish well and that's not seabass. He said if they presented it differently, he would think it's seabass but since they kept the skin on and the size of it suggest it is no seabass. So this place ripped me off in term of my fish. They said it's seabass but instead stripbass came out. Bleh. I still thought the fish was decent though, I enjoyed it. It was slightly on the saltier end. As for my dessert, I enjoyed my creme brulee. I also had the opportunity to try the chocolate with the bacon bits. It's good. I was fortunate to find street parking but it's always meter until 7 or 8pm in old sacramento. I think this place validates parking as well. I don't think I'll come back to this restaurant. It's nothing to rave over.

I am so torn between 3 or 4 stars! I'll stick with 3 for now until I have a chance to go back and try something more substantial. Mean while, I will say I went in here for the first time not to long ago and had the French onion soup and a Cesar salad. The soup was so good that it inspired me to go home and make my own. (Also good if I may say so.) . Really. The salad was even superb for such a basic meal! Which believe me it should be so simple but it seems not everyone can perfect soup and salad. However! If you're drinking... This is NOT the place for you! Unless you want to spend a ridiculous amount of money for below the line alcohol. I can't believe how much they charge for some stoli and soda water. That's my only complaint. Can't have it all I suppose. The location is fun. I will definitely be back to try some more food. Until then I can't truly say whether this place is actually good or if I just got lucky with ordering such simple foods! Stay tuned.

We were in Sacramento for a conference and decided to spend the evening in old town. We have eaten at Frank Fats before and decided to try Fat City, their sister outlet. We were expecting the same grist service and food that we got at Franks and were disappointed. Our sever seemed quite put out that we asked for separate checks. We explained that we would not be reimbursed otherwise and he flat out said, "I don't want to do separate checks'" and was serious....... He then spent the rest of the time trying to be funny but came off insulting and inconvenienced. He did have his moments but it was too few and far between. When we finished our entrees the staff cleared the table and they brought us the checks. We told him we were having desert and he was made a comment about how he had asked us and we said no. That's not what happened. The food also left much to be desired. I'll stick with the original frank fats next time.

My Mom really wanted to go to Fat's and this one was open on her birthday. I was not thrilled about her choice because of the negative reviews on Yelp but I have to listen to Mom. I made reservations 5 days before her birthday. I called the restaurant and made sure they were going to be open. The girl on the phone took my first name, the time we were arriving and how many were in the party. When I began to give her my last name she cut me off and abruptly hung up. That kind of made me nervous. Fast forward...my family arrives to Fat's 20 minutes before our reservation time. I check in with the girl working the reservation book and she can't find my name! She says, "No, we don't have you down." I KNEW IT! Luckily, the restaurant did not have the dining room open yet, so she put my name down. I didn't want my family to know what was going on , so I told them we were going to have a round of drinks in the bar. Maybe things will be ok now. We sit down at the bar.The young lady who was our bartender seemed flustered, running back and forth getting drinks. She did tell us she would get our order in a few. The bar part of the restaurant was not busy, so I don't know why she was stressed. She eventually got our order. When she set my Mom's white wine down in front of her, my Mom noticed there was a glob of brown something floating in it. It was a 1/4 inch "chunkie" or "booger". I asked the bartender to get my Mom a new drink and so she took the glass and then turned her back into a corner and we both watched her pour the wine into a new glass. She put the glass in front of my Mom. This glass was filthy, like somebody had used it already, plus it was the same nasty wine except the "booger chunkie" was gone. My Mom was mortified. I called the bartender back over and apologized and asked for a new glass because it was filthy and it was the same wine. I had to explain to the bartender that it was my Mom's birthday and if she could make it a special time for her....PLEASE!!!! Surprisingly, the bartender opened up a new bottle of wine and got my Mom a new glass. When my Mom received her wine, she tells me that it was nice and cold. Oh my God...the original wine was hot. When it was time to go to our table, everything else after that was great. The waiter was very attentive, my parents enjoyed their food, and Mom had a nice birthday...finally. I hope that the other Fat's restaurants are better. I am never coming back here again.

Came here for lunch with my husband and kids--we sat at a table in the bar area and our server/bartender was friendly & efficient. The food, however, couldn't make up for her good job. My daughter's "house made" macaroni and cheese was a Kraft clone with a little extra cheese melted on top. We are pretty picky about mac & cheese, and if the menu says "house made" I'm looking for at least a Cafe Bernardo-caliber mac & cheese. Her side of fruit was the run-of-the mill melon with two grapes deal. It's summer in Sacramento! Real, delicious fresh fruit is EVERYWHERE! Mix it up so that kids will actually eat the fruit! My husband and I each had the Fat City Sandwich & caesar salad combo--the salad was decent (great croutons), but the turkey in the sandwich just seemed a little off--a little slimy in a low-quality lunch meat kind of way. My son had a grilled cheese and fries--the winner out of all of our meals. Beautiful stained glass & vintage decor, friendly server, but the food was not enough to bring me back. Sacramento has too many good restaurants to settle for average to below-average food.

Took my husband here last Sunday for brunch. The food was great, the biscuits and gravy were awesome!!! However, I think the price on the Bloody Mary was too steep for what they give. Should be about $7 not $10. Service was just OK, but overall a great restaurant that I will go back to over and over. Be careful if you order the sausage as a side, whew! They're big and meaty! I could only eat one! Also, there was a sign on the table saying they're conserving water and won't serve it without request, but the busser brought 2 over and we declined them. If you're gonna conserve, conserve! Don't put out those table cards if you aren't going to abide by them. Husband liked his sausage egg scramble until the end when the tomatoes made the plate all watery. Not bueno. A great place to go and hang out for good food. I'm just picking apart what I personally didn't care for but overall don't have a bad thing to say!

This is a great, reasonably-priced, tasty-food option in Old Sacramento. A colleague suggested it while we were in town for a conference. Attempting to make a healthy choice, I went with the California Salad. It was an ample portion with grilled chicken, avocado, corn, cucumber and tomato. I opted for no cheese and dressing on the side. I thought it was delicious. My colleagues also seemed to enjoy their dishes and they offer a great variety of dishes to please most palates. Our server was nice, attentive and had no problem handling our checks individually. (I did give him a heads up at the beginning of our meal.) I would definitely consider coming back here, when I'm in town.

Went here with some friends and the food was great. Had the pastrami and Turkey sandwich with French onion soup. It was yummy. Wife had the bbq burger and that also was good. I enjoyed the atmosphere and decor as well as the service. I would definitely return.

ONLY DOCKING STARS BC THE HOSTESS SAT US RIGHT NEXT TO A HUGE GROUP THAT WAS SUPER LOUD... And it was only my mom and I that were eating here.... Rather dumb move of that hostess because I couldn't even have conversation while eating (everyone knows that's annoying)..... But I digress, I got the california chicken sandwhich with garlic fries and it was great! The garlic fries reminded me of a baseball game which are the best! And the chicken on my sandwich was cooked perfectly and was a huge piece so A+ for that... I truly wish I could give this place the 5 stars it deserves but these things are based off of the one time experience right?

Two stars because of horrible service. My fiancé and I came in for dinner. Firstly- it smells so terrible when you walk in- like Lysol mixed with vinegar. The carpet is super dirty and yet we still opted to stay. We ordered the sampler appetizer which was surprisingly good and the food was actually not half bad. It's the service that I'm not happy about. Servers conversations louder than the music playing, shouting at each other "are we done yet?" And after we got our food, the waitress turned around to say "I'm finally done!" To her coworkers- RUDE. I heard their entire life stories from across the room which just took away from a quiet outing with my honey. I don't think we'll be back but I'm glad we crossed this place off of our Dine27 card. I'm writing this as we are paying the check and I just want to get out of here! The staff is so loud and extremely chatty.

Was just plain awful!! Limp, and iceberg way overpriced!! We had fish tacos they were deep over fried old hard rice!!!! Service wasn't bad but I think she knew not to ask me how my food was!! I would have told her that this was the worst food I've had! McDonalds salads are better an cheaper!!

Let me explain the stars I gave this place. One star just for being one of the few restaurants at that end of old sacto actually keeping its doors open after 7pm. Then another three for great service and good food with the exception of the Fat's Hamburger. The medium rare hamburger was actually dry and over cooked but after our wine tasting and stops I was too buzzed and tired to send it back. Other then that it was a good little restaurant. I would go again and recommend.

My husband came here and had lunch one afternoon. He had the calamari and I had the French dip. He said it was some of the best calamari he's had and my french dip was fantastic! It's a bit pricey but the food is great and the service is wonderful. We sat at the bar and drank while we ate. It was beautiful. We will be coming back.

I just wasted my lunch break here. My boyfriend wanted to take me out to lunch and we decided on this place and it could not have been more of a dissapointment! The food taste like it came from cans and frozen packages, but the prices would suggest that they make things fresh. This place is way OVERPRICED!!!!! $70.00+ for the most mediocre food I have ever had. Oh and the drinks pretty much suck in cause you wanted to skip a meal and just have a quick drink. They either need a better chef or cheaper prices because at this rate, anyone who goes in there is being cheated out of their hard earned cash!

We went to Fat City on Saturday evening after Second Saturday. We were promptly greeted at the door and given a choice to sit in the bar area or the dining room. We chose a little table by the window. The water boy and waiter were both prompt and courteous. Our drinks came out first in less than five minutes. The waiter brought some warm bread that was actually pretty good. So far so good. I used to come here a long time ago. They had a roasted red pepper fettuccine that was excellent back in the 1990s. That wasn't on the menu, but a pasta jambalaya (whatever that is) was on the menu in place of the fettuccine. I chose the tequila lime flat iron steak. My girlfriend chose the roasted free range chicken. This was the worst meal we've had in nearly ten years of dining together. The steak was a tiny terrible tough piece of meat, mostly hard gristle and it tasted like someone dumped a bottle of sweetened lime juice from the bar over it. The cook also plated the steak while raw instead of medium as I had asked. The steak dinner came with a tiny scoop of cold dried-out mash potatoes and six baby carrots with some half raw onions. The roasted chicken was overcooked and tough. I guess the brussel sprouts were ok. That's the only thing we were able to finish except the bread. I was still hungry after dinner. We chose not to order dessert. With one beer, one tea and two dinner plates, the bill was over $74. This was the most expensive terrible meal we've ever had. The only positive thing I can say about Fat City besides the bread and brussel sprouts is that the service was good. I usually give a restaurant another try if I had a bad experience. After leaving a $15 dollar tip, the total bill was $89. I cannot afford to "try" this restaurant again at those prices. My advice, STAY AWAY FROM FAT CITY. You'll spend a lot of money and be extremely disappointed. There are just too many excellent restaurants in Sacramento that serve good food to waste your time at Fat City. Blaaaaaaa!

After seeing a friends concert in old Sacramento, we decided to find a local place for dinner. We left our info with the seriously most unfriendly hostess I have experienced in a restaurant. Not rude, just completely robotic and not responsive to any friendliness. We decided to not let that get us down, as the gorgeous bar and Tiffany lighting was very nice and made for a good setting. A really neat historical building! I had pre looked at the menu, as being Vegan in some places can be more challenging. I had decided upon a couple of possibilities. Our waiter could not have made me feel more uncomfortable for being vegan. He is the reason that I dread eating at non vegetarian restaurants. Although, most servers are usually accommodating and friendly. I was first going to order one thing but after I asked with it without the pesto, he remarked how awful and dry it would be and then just looked at me. No offer to make it a bit differently or talk to the chef. I settled on something that wasn't bad but ironically enough, my companion ended up barely eating her dinner, as it was not good. In the end, it took forever to even get our check as he would not make eye contact with us. It was a total bust and we won't be going back. I think that the wait staff should be trained to help people feel comfortable with their food allergies or restrictions and not be made to feel like a big pain and an oddity. I have to say, this is one of the few times this has really happened,as most restaurants are very friendly and accommodating about it. On a side note, not one employee seemed happy to be there. None of the usual camaraderie that I see at other restaurants. Usually its managements fault when every person working there seems pretty unhappy.

Wow this place has gone down hill since the last time we were here. I would have given 5-stars on our experience last year. However, this year is a different story. We were sat in the front section, directly in the stream of a constant cold vent. When we requested to move, the hostess was not very friendly.... I know, I understand staggering the guest seating for the waiters so I suggested another table in the front that wasn't in direct air. Still didn't seemed pleased but let us do it. Unfortunately that section is handled by the bartender... so on a Tuesday night it took over 25 minutes to even put our order in because he was busy making drinks for the tables in the back. Now I could over look that, however it didn't get better as the meal progressed, we saw him less, and the moody hostess more. Don't get me wrong the food is always delicious although all the fries were obviously made before the rest of the meal was complete (meatloaf, burgers, sweet potato fries), and desserts especially... leave something to be desired. $7 for a small piece of cheesecake... a little exorbitant. And the bad part is, it was for a birthday, last year they brought the dessert out free with a candle, and this year they didn't mention anything and then charged for it. I would definitely not take out of town guests there again. What a sad disappointment.

Always a great food stop in Old Sac! SITREP This has become a favorite stop on Monday Holidays when I'm with my friends the precocious Rancezilla and his lovely wife Carrie. After a wonderful Sunday night of clubbing at the Asylum, this is where we get our "hangovers" on and fight back! But I also like to catch lunch here with my buddy Minh. And we tend to be more experimental with their eclectic menu items during weekday lunches. SETUP Great California fusion cuisine. From special California burritos, club sandwiches, steak sandwiches and lots of yummy fries, Fat City delivers good comfort food in sizable portions at reasonable cost. Endless soda also makes happy! I have to say that the standouts for me are there French Fried Green Beans! What a delightful exotic taste treat. And then their Meatloaf lunch is just to die for. Hearty. Substantial. I do NOT go away hungry from a meal like that! THE LOWDOWN Yummy scrumptious! And I will most certainly be back!

Every time my family and I come to visit Sacramento, this is the place where we love to come to have lunch or dinner (depending on the time). This place is normally not open for lunch during the week but open for lunch on the weekends. I, myself, have only been here twice and both times, they resturaunt isn't packed. You can hold convserstations with the people across the table from you (without having to yell across the table) which I always appreciate in a place to eat. The waiters and waitresses are all really nice and make sure your meal is fantastic. Some take a little bit longer than others but it's not to much of a wait. The drinks at the bar or from the bar are really good. Overall the place isn't bad, the food is decent and the place looks clean. Beware of some spots that are a bit slippery coming up from the bathroom. The bathrooms are downstairs and are clean and always seemed to be well kept. Give this place a try if you haven't already.

I went here with a large group for breakfast. We made a reservation but clearly didn't have to after I saw how few people there were inside (or it was because it's a rather large place). At first everything was OK, but then after 15-20 minutes of waiting a busser finally came to refill water glasses and we asked for service (I think they forgot about us!). Anyway, once we finally did get the waiter's attention and ordered, everything was great! She brought us our drinks (though there was a mess-up on one order) and then not too much longer our food arrived. The Eggs Benedict were super good but around $13 I think. Their other breakfast items were inexpensive, relatively ($7-10), as well as their lunch menu. Overall, it was a nice place to be in with good ambience, beautiful stained glass to look at everywhere, and pretty good food...just don't let them seat you in the back if it's already totally empty!! Ha :)

Review is based on initial service only. We did not get a chance to eat due to poor service from the start. We were Seated and did not receive menus or any service. Finally hailed a waitress who stated she was too busy with other guests to help us so we left. One additional star for the bar service while we waited, which was good.

They ruined the menu with their changes. They use to have a great pasta called the Fat City Pasta, it's gone and replaced with nothing...if you like bread, you'll be fine, but otherwise, won't be going back. :(

Good... We had a couple of drinks at the Bar. Very nice, good selection, but they sell bogle. Had to take a star off for that. LOL Food was ok, couscous was not even close to being cooked right. My fish was over cooked and mixed cauliflower was old looking. Garden Burger... Ya, NO! Just pretty disappointed in a place that supposed to be so "good!"

Overall, this is a good eclectic mixed/California cuisine place with a variety of dishes, including bugers, pasta,Chinese/Pan-Asian-influenced dishes, Southern-influenced dishes, etc. It has a huge range of choices, therefore. Food overall is reasonably good, most a bit heavy-handed, somewhat crude, and hardly top-notch delicate or creative cuisine. The place is neat, an old building in lovely (if touristy) Old Sacramento along the riverfront. It has nice big windows and is generally a fun and reliable place to go, if hardly a place for an outstanding meal. I should note that I have almost always only eaten lunch here.
