Stopped in for birthday party for Wife.... I had Sukiyaki.....nice broth.....meat way overcooked, taste like cardboard......carrots???? but the jelly-noodles were hard and bunch in balls instead of loose and stringy.....I really don't think thats the way they serve it in other restraurants....Its like all the noodles in three tought balls soking in broth..."really"....someone not paying attention to what I believe are left over noodles from the day before....you really had to see them....anyway.... $16......little overpriced I would think....for lunch... extremly busy....extremly loud.....a little attitude.... Wife and others enjoyed their meals....."why is it always me" is what I say.... Service OK....had to go looking for waiter and seasoning.... Not my favorite Japanese restraurant....but it looks like others enjoy it .... Maybe I know the difference....."Been to Japan"....and I do know what good japanese food is.... Next time its back to the House of Sukiyaki in Sacto..... Maybe you'll have a better time....I know they can do better.... Weasel..... .

This is our absolute favorite sushi place! Even better than our old fave's back in the Bay Area. Our must haves always seem to be the BBQ tuna, Incredible, Santa Clause and our newest find the Black and White. The kids meals are good sized portions but now the kids are getting bigger and are starting to eat our stuff. Guess we have to order more now! The service is generally really good but once in while we'll get a dud server but all in all, no complaints. If you're a regular, its worth it to join the Koki Club, my kids love the T-shirts. Definitely expect a wait on the weekends, it's worth it.

Few years ago I could NOT stand the sight of sushi; the thought of eating seaweed sickened me. My aunt took me on a dinner date to Mikuni, and I fell in love. When comparing other sushi places nothing comes close to Mikuni. Some of my favorite rolls would be: Scott, James, Tommy, Train Wreck, and Japanese Mafia...If you're one who still needs some warming up to sushi, there are incredible chicken/rice plates, and the sesame chicken is my personal favorite. When Taro is around the place is just lit up with energy, Haro was also a delight to meet. It's a great family/date/friends restaurant to go to anytime. This place is wonderful and definitely worth checking out, you won't regret it. :)

You are always greeted with a hearty welcome at this Roseville institution! Love the atmosphere and of course the great Sushi. You might pay a little more, but this is a can't miss!

We were feeling sushi for Saturday lunch this weekend, so we decided to revisit after a dry spell for trying other restaurants in the area. We went in around 12:15pm and seating was still plentiful along the sushi bar. Tables were almost filled at capacity and there were lots of patrons. We were seated at the second bar from the entrance and were asked if we wanted hot green tea for a chilly day in Roseville. After ordering our drinks, the sushi chef gave us complimentary edamame. This is what we ordered: *BBQ Albacore with Red Sauce no onions: I think the potions are getting smaller now compared to a few years ago. And when the dish came out, the tuna chunks were cold. Usually the BBQ pieces are warm outside and room temperature inside. That's the perfect taste for an unique offering. [see pic] *Carmichael Roll no onions: Everything tasted fresh and fulfilling. I liked the deep fried shrimp with avocado and tuna toppings. [see pic] *Deep fried Gyoza appetizer: 8 pieces fried gyozas. To me, they were premade from a frozen package, but they were all nicely fried and complimented by a tangy dipping sauce with 2 slices of cucumbers and 1 orange. [see pic] Tako Ceviche: Usually we like their cucumber and seaweed salad because it's unusual. This time, I saw the Tako Ceviche and the ingredients caught my attention. Thinly sliced octopus topped with a cherry tomato ceviche, cilantro, lemon, and black tobiko. I presentation was exquisite. The black tobiko had a firmer and crunchier texture than orange tobiko. Taste was unique with slight salt, citrus, and herb flavors. This is my new favorite dish. [see pics] Total came to $41.62 after tax but before tip. Another great meal! If local bay area sushi restaurants could carry the same variety and offer similar specialties, I'm there! But for now, I'll have to settle going to Mikuni.

You haven't had sushi until you've had Mikuni's. The service here is always quick and pleasant, even when it's packed (all the time) and there's a "20 minute" wait I always get sat within 5 minutes. The food is the top of the line, I actually live in Colorado Springs but every time we visit my parents there are multiple trips to Mikuni's involved. It's a little spendy but it's completely worth it. If you're a bento box and teriyaki chicken type of person this place isn't for you- true sushi enthusiasts only!!

The Peter II roll is to die for!! You say you don't like sushi? I dare you to have this roll and not like it. It's how I got my husband into sushi :)

This is by far the best sushi in all of Sac! Always fresh, the best rolls, the best sauces, etc. Truely exceptional! This is why they have like 6 places in this town! I have tried many sushi places in the Sacramento area and this is number 1!! I highly recommend the Peter 2, the Puff Daddy, and the Tommy! Also the Freaky Edamame!

I'm thinking about going to Tokyo and ordering a Fair Oaks roll, it's gotta be popular there right. I laugh at other yelpers who pour slander on this place becuase of fish drowned in sauce. This is NOT an auhtentic japanese restaurant, it caters for our complex palates that demand something a little different. The reason it's drowned in sauce is cos everyone loves the taste. If you don't want it, order something PURE! I personally love the sushi here and their stuffed mushrooms are fab. I've drank an immense amount of shots in my time and hated all (well minus some schanpps brewed on a roof in Austria). But if a Mikuni Oyster shooter can be considered a shot well, it just breaks the mold. LOVE IT. Oysters, tabasco, onions, pepper. A bit like swallowing an eyeball but gulp it down, it rocks. The ambiance is non-existent, chefs shout abnoxiously and you have to spin a wheel on your birthday. There's nothing u can land on like 10 bottles of sake + hot chick so i lost interest quickly but it's fun to do..ONCE.

Rolls that Rock! Mikuni's is a modern take on sushi. With a sushi roll menu longer than the line for American Idol auditions, there is more than enough to satisfy you're sushi needs. Plenty of new taste to surprise classic sushi lovers. Try a "Black and White" (Blowtorch Seared White Tuna Toro topped with Peppers and Black Tobiko) or a Zig-Zag Handroll (Chopped Soft Shell Crab Mixed with a Spicy Avocado Blend wrapped in Soy Paper) to tease those conservative sushi eater taste-buds. A variety of special and secret sauces add to the new flavors that Mikuni's sushi provides. Expect a wait during dinner hours, but the 3 sushi bars help the line wait time go fast. A definite recommend in my book.

I am not a sushi person but my husband is so we started going to Mikuni's. I have to say it's actually pretty good. They have vegetarian options and they have sushi with chicken in it instead, so I didn't feel left out while everyone has sushi, I was able to enjoy chicken-sushi instead. The Kings rolls and No. 39 rolls were amazing. The service was pretty good and they have a cool birthday wheel you can spin and the deserts are great too! Only downside is they are pretty pricey.

When I asked my husband if he wanted to tag along to Roseville with me, he said "Only if we can go to that sushi place". See, we'd been to Mikuni before, back in 2005 & had fond memories of the flaming Mafia Roll. What a disappointing return. I'm not sure if Mikuni was a chain back in 2005, but you can certainly feel it now. We were seated almost exactly where we had sat before, only they had taken out the sushi bar to what, make room for more tables? They certainly didn't add any more seating capacity by doing so. Shrug. So, the edamame was cold, the rolls disappointing and overly sauced, the market price uni way overpriced, and their interpretation of a "spicy avocado roll" involved canned jalapenos.

Mikuni has got to be one of the best Japanese restaurants that I've ever been to. All the sushi rolls that I have tried were delicious & I have never been disappointed. I also love their sake selection. I ordered the sake sampler for a very reasonable price (I think it was under $10). It came with 4 different sake flavors (lychee, blueberry, unfiltered sake & green apple). YUM! Anyway, I think the only downside to this Restaurant is that they don't take reservations (so be prepared to wait). Also I think their sushi is way too pricey, but I can understand why they price the way they do (gourmet sushi, high reputation= pricey sushi.... why not, right?)

This place is pretty good. First time here actually. Can't believe I haven't been there after all these years. Oh well, been there, and it was good. Service was friendly and prices were fair (for sushi). The outside patio looks like a great place to have drinks after work.

Way impressed for it being a semi-chain restaurant in a small strip mall in Sacramento on a Sunday. Really loved everything I ate here. Whether they're cooked rolls or just simple completely raw no fancy sauce rolls it was all pretty superior to most other sushi places. Incredible Roll- WOW. This has really fresh tuna with creamy avocado, rich but not overpowering sauces, and the top of it all is slightly torched so it's cooked with crispiness (but not bad like the pre-cooked and saved stuff they'd use elsewhere) and a smokey flavor. I was supposed to share it but I'm pretty sure I ate 80% of that dish haha Albacore Tuna- I love flash seared tuna! And they did it right Mel Roll- Very simple with just the rice, tuna, salmon and yellowtail. It all tasted really really fresh so you could taste the delicate flavors of the fish and not any "fishiness" Yummmm

After my school week, I used to hop on Amtrak for an 8.5-hour trip from San Luis Obispo to Roseville to meet the boyfriend, who was there on business, to have Mikuni for dinner. Good food makes me do some pretty crazy things. Oh, and love... Love does too.

Mikuni is becoming my go to stop when I'm on my way back from Tahoe and I want some lighter food to counterbalance what is always a gorge-fest + snowboarding trip. Mikuni exemplifies what I consider "American style" sushi, i.e. they've got rolls up the wazoo. Usually I scoff at places that specialize in rolls but Mikuni is uniquely delicious. On top of that they've got decent fish quality. I love the creativity they put into their rolls and seafood specialties. Plus, since the fish quality is decent - you can tell they're not trying to hide the fish with tons of sauce. Some dishes we had (in order of preference): Scallop Special (SO good) Black and White Tazmanian roll - a definite must if you love salmon No. 99 with Lobster The fiance and I enjoyed everything and those four dishes was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. Overall, Mikuni - I am always sad at the end of a snow trip but I'll be a little less sad if the drive home includes you!

I love sushi and have tried everything in town and we always ask our selves why ? We always end up back at Mikuni's, fresh fish always , servings are good sized, and everything you order taste great. Always order Annie, Kaiser and rainbow roll, never fails - I also just got hooked on the tuna sliders. Puff daddy, train wreck, bbq tuna, sashimi plates, are also good, don't know where to stop. Always crowded, but that should be telling you something, prices are a little higher but that's in quality and portion size and if you are looking for a quiet romantic place this is probably not it. But if your looking for good service and great Japanese food, check it out.

The best sake oyster shooters of any sushi joint & the place that introduced me to bubble tea (the carbonated soft drink with the glass marble in the bottom of the bottle). I still like the original Fair Oaks location better, but for probably nothing more than reasons of nostalgia. Try all of their "round eye" specialty rolls. It may not be traditional, but everything is damn tasty!

Can you say "Ge!!"? Despite the seeming popularity of this chain (already, to me that indicates something is wrong), this so called Japanese Sushi Bar that replicates frankensushi like a virus and offers an all you can eat sushi buffet for MNF is this sushi aficionado's worst nightmare. This goes against almost every tenet of sushi and is a waste of fresh, quality fish. I was disgusted the only time I voluntarily tried this place. And I'm internally horrified when a group I'm with suggests going here. I hate the corruption of sushi on display here and the taste of the food served here leaves much to be desired. The level of service (or absence thereof) makes the experience worse. The worst in price, quality, service and the corruption of the most natural of cuisines --- Yelp should offer negative star ratings. The one positive thing I can say about these places --- the owners are probably laughing all the way to the bank.

This is the best sushi there is in this area. The fish is always fresh. ERIC THE BARTENDER IS THE BEST! On your birthday you get to spin a wheel where you can win things from gift certificates to bags of rice! LOL! My sister won a bag of rice one year for her birthday! It was hilarious and the next year, Taro, the owner was there when she was spinning the wheel and I was chanting "Bag of Rice! Bag of Rice!" for her, and she won another bag of rice, but he moved the wheel so that she can get a free Mikuni Ed Hardy T-shirt. This is always a great place to gather with friends and family. You will definitely always have fun! They have many locations in the Sacramento area and even one in Reno now as well. Best Sushi in the area!

I haven't been to a huge variety of sushi restaurants, but I do know when there is something special happening at a restaurant. We were able to be seated as soon as we got there, which showed how much space there was for how busy of a place it is. We were served very quickly and had more than one attempt for ordering. The timeliness, prices, ambiance and pure quality of food made it a great experience for me and the people I joined in this meal. The ambiance was terrific. The chef's were very personable and fun to be around. Prices were manageable for the high quality of sushi. If you are not an experienced sushi eater than the chef's are very helpful in decision making as well. Ask for a surprise and they will give you a masterpiece!

My cousin and I had to refuel during our long shopping date, so we went to Mikuni for dinner. It's a warm and cozy family restaurant that is unlike Taro's and Mikuni MIdtown. My cousin ordered one of their specials that I think is called the Hamachi Roll-Up and one of their regular rolls on their menu. I had several plates of nigiri, including octopus, scallop, salmon and yellowtail. The Hamachi dish was pretty darn good. We love yellowtail and the fish just melted in our mouths. My only complaint is that the sauces for both of the plates that my cousin ordered tasted very similar, if not the same, thus I couldn't taste enough variety. My nigiri was delicious though. The fish tasted very fresh and sweet, not fishy-smelling or frozen. This was definitely a good place for us to refuel.

My family and I recently moved up here from the Bay, and I was craving for some good sashimi and sushi, so my husband took me to Mikuni. Usually I trust my husband's restaurant pick b/c we have similar taste in a lot of things, but I guess I should've listened to the hint when he said "my bosses love this place" about Mikuni. I think Mikuni is a sushi place where you get creative and fancy sushi. If you are like me, who just likes SUSHI and raw stuff, who doesn't really care about fancy stuff but real Japanese grill or fresh sashimi, there're better places to go. Most of their sushi can be overwelming and heavy b/c all the sauces or cream cheese or creams they add to it, so it really isn't the place for me. I do recommend trying the Benjamin. It's pretty good but I could only eat 3 pieces too. The line seemed long but the wait was fast. It's a busy place especially on weekends, so it was hard to get a hold of our waiter. Other wise, our waiter was nice. They are pretty good with children. When they saw that we had a 2-year old with us, they automatically gave us more tofu in one of our miso soup. Thank them for that so my daughter was occupied before our order was here. I don't think I'd go back there again. But if you're a fan of different kinds of creative/ fancy/ saucy sushi, you should try this place.

This specific place is the most enjoyable sushi place I have ever been. It has a way too complex and large menu of maki, lots of cooked food, their own beer on tap, and tons of sake. To start, my favorite. Their oyster shooters. There's alot of ways to make oyster shooters, and I have only had it as good as mikunis at one other place. These shooters are sake, quail egg, a small oyster, dash of soy sauce, sash of cock sauce, and a sprinkle of green onions on top. When i first heard whats in it i thought "that's disgusting! i must have one!" Totally worth it. I have made so many people drink these things and they always give the same discussed face at first and then say how surprisingly good it is. For their beer, they have their own beer on tap, which isn't amazing but it gives them some points in my book. They also have the same Japanese beers everyone else does. Their bar is just a sake mix drink bar so you are stuck with gross cocktails. But their sake selection is really pretty nice. AND they have a sake sampler which is worth getting for sure. The maki, ooo the maki. I still haven't had everything on the list. The list i kid you not is 2 pages long. And each one has a crazy name like Jared 2 or something so it doesn't help much. What does help is they have a whole section of favorites so you can pretty much just pick from there and know you are getting something amazing. Their sauces are some of the best I've ever had at a sushi place. Any roll that says it uses their 3 sauces try. I don't care what you put that stuff on its going to be amazing. Another awesome thing is if its your birthday you can spin the wheel! It can land on free sushi meal, free pint glass or shirt, kiss your favorite sushi chef, or other stuff. Its pretty sweet and I have 2 pint glasses from it still. I have been to other mikunis and this location is far better from my experiences. If you like maki you will love this place. You will find something you like.

As if mikuni's needs another 5 star review. Great fresh sushi, the best sauces, my favs are incredible roll, Japanese mafia, and BBQ tuna with white sauce. Here's a tip: Sushi is at it's freshest if you sit at the suhi bar as opposed to the tables, plus you can tip the real heroes... The sushi makers!

Our all time favorite! A somewhat wild take on sushi, but there are many interesting taste combinations. Lately our favorites are the Tommy Roll and the Benjamin Roll. Like to finish with a small portion of Hamachi Sashimi. Almost everything is good! Only negatives is that it is quite noisy and the ambiance isn't anything to get excited about.

3.5 Stars! I am guessing this is the big hot spot in Roseville. My cousin and her husband were raving about this place and told me this is the place they and their friends go to for nights out without the kids. So we decided to try it out with them on Sat night including their 3 kids between the ages of 5-8. Their kids had been exposed to this place before and I was impressed that my little cousins like sushi....including seaweed and raw fish. Right on! This restaurant is located in a very quiet strip area....nothing fancy about it but its located next to a movie theater so it's probably a great date location. We were seated within 5 minutes for a table of 7. This place does cater to kids and includes a kids menu and cool chopsticks for the kids to use. It is nicely decorated with a huge fish tank full of gorgeous fish. Among the 7 of us we ordered: Edamame (nothing fabulous about them--they were not salted) Two orders of "Puff Daddys" (tiny bites of tempura fried shrimp) One bento which included chicken terriyaki, tempura, salad, 4 pieces of gyoza (pretty standard bento but the chicken was the best chicken terriyaki I have ever had---no fat and big big pieces of chicken) One order of Maguro One order of Sake Marilyn Monroll (shrimp, crab salad, avo, scallop, masago and onion)--it was good but I probably wouldn't order it again Two orders of Spicy Johnny (shrimp, spicy tuna, avo, eel, masago and onion)--my favorite roll and I would order it again! and one Red Plate Children's menu And then drinks....Shirley Temples for the kids, sodas for the guys and I had green tea. All of this for $115 (tax and tip) for 4 adults and 3 kids. I was stuffed after! Prices are comparable to most trendier Japanese places in the Bay Area. Service was excellent as well. I noticed a lot of younger people coming in dressed up looking like they might be going out clubbing later and also lots of tables with families. It definitely is suitable for a night out with friends or a family night with the kids. I didn't get to check out the bar area but my cousin said it's nice. I probably would come back if my cousins wanted to. Being from the San Jose area, I am spoiled with really great sushi places for very affordable prices. Plus I prefer traditional Japanese places over trendy places. Still great....and I will definitely always remember this place as the first time I saw my 5 year old cousin Sophia eating a sushi roll!

Quick service and fresh food when we were here on Sunday for lunch. Compared to the Elk Grove location, this one is old and plain. Also, my menu and the drink menu were sticky - icky. But the food quality was good.

I LOVE MIKUNI! I have eaten here so many times over the years and have always had great service and food. I probably would have given it 4 stars a year ago because they didn't have a full bar but now they do and they have a happyhour! I've tried many different Rolls and have always been extremely satisfied with them. It is a little pricey but its good, and the quality of the seafood is excellent. Definitely a must for any sushi lover!

Summary: Excellent food, surly hostesses. When my friends and I entered about 30 minutes prior to closing, we were "greeted" by surly hostesses that informed us that, despite the restaurant being almost empty, we would have to wait until our full party arrived before we could be seated. Or, we could be seated immediately in the "enchanted grotto" (ref. Frasier, Season 2, episode 23, The Innkeepers). Not wanting to be seated in the offered dark, dank little corner, we objected, as there were a *lot* of open tables all over the restaurant. We were then seated by an angry and recalcitrant seat-babe, who could not have appeared less happy about having to actually work (versus trolling for boyfriend material from the clientele). Let the record show that, at this point, Mikuni would have rated one or fewer stars. Then, we ordered, and the bad review was elevated to four stars. The food and waitstaff were just that good. Our waiter was friendly, accommodating, and was prompt in his service. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and my "Japanese Mafia" roll was out-of-this-world! One order of Unagi was very stale and was refunded without complaint, but the Bento plate was outstanding. All-iin-all, very, very good food. In summary, if you can put up with the worthless eye-candy decoration (aka hostesses), the food will amaze you. Four stars.

Bon bons all day everyday! My best friend Melissa C. is a Mikuni pro and anything she orders is good. She introduced me to the bon bons, little balls of crab covered in tuna, and now I dream about these in my sleep! The japanese mafia roll is good too. Heck, everything is good! I can't go here all the time because it's definitely pricier than other sushi spots in the area, but it's definitely worth it for my bon bon fix.

People who like this stuff have never had real sushi, straight up. Literally every "specialty" roll they offer has something fried in it, some dairy product (mayonaise based sauce, cream cheese, who knows what else...), and little actual fresh fish. I hate when people go crazy over this place, but I guess ignorance is bliss because there are no good sushi restaurants in the area and people around here simply don't know better. If someone had the skills to open a real sushi restaurant, this over-priced, under-skilled joint would close up so quick!

    (1)
  • Katherine B.

Good sushi, not going to lie. But frustratingly overpriced because they are the only sushi bar in town with a bar, and one of the dressier places to go to sushi for diner. Good sushi, but there are places in town that serve equal quality sushi for a lot less.

MY FAVORITE SUSHI! I have never been disappointed with Mikuni's. I love the food and drinks and environment. Worth waiting if youre going at a busy time. The servers aren't always very attentive but the food makes up for it. SO YUMMY

Awww Mikuni is like home sweet home to me. First place I have ever eaten sushi at and let me tell you it was love at first sight! What is there not to like! Such an extensive list of sushi here and I think I love every roll, but to name a few: the Puff Daddy, Folsom Lake, Fair Oaks, BMW, The Marilyn, Spicy Johnny....oh I could go on for days the possibilities are endless here. Mikunis is a MUST see and do for any sushi lover living or visiting Sacramento. It is even a great place to take someone who has never had sushi or is not sure if they like it, I guarantee they will love it after eating here.

Good, quality, fresh-tasting fish. I have been to Mikuni countless times. I would consider Mikuni a "California-style" sushi joint. If you like all the sauces and junk on sushi, this is the best you will find. The sushi rolls are excellent, but I've tired of the trendy, saucy rolls and am now looking for a more traditional sushi restaurant. The sushi is on the pricey side, but the rolls are larger than any other sushi restaurant I have been to. It is usually a $60 tab for my wife and I (just for sushi and appetizer, not including drinks). If you are looking for a deal, order one of the Party Platters. Platter B and Platter D are both excellent, and you get a lot of sushi for the price. This restaurant is popular, and you can count on a 20 to 30 minute wait for dinner. The waitstaff is always busy, so don't expect much of their time. It is loud and not a good restaurant for ambiance or intimacy. Seating is quite cramped. The restaurant is awash in advertising (two TVs in the main room run continuous commercials for the restaurant and other companies, chef shirts have various "sponsors" on them like a nascar driver, and menus have pages of ads). My favorites: Kaiser roll, Incredible roll, and BBQ Tuna.

Just ate dinner there for the phenomenal price of $40 for 2. Delicious!!!! Flaming shrooms was the perfect blend of spiciness and sweet. Also chose the pasta (udon) was very filling. In addition, the Rainbow Roll and Spicy Johnny roll were mouth-watering. To polish the entire meal, chocolate lava cake dusted with powdered sugar was served with raspberry sauce and basil leaves. Although, I do wish that the chocolate lava cake had a hot fudge sauce in the middle. Alas, it didn't but for the remaining appetizers/entrees the quality and quantity is unbeatable. Truly a valued price and best of all, the sushi was fresh and delicious. Sara was an attentive waitress, making sure if we needed anything. The restaurant was busy and the food came out at a reasonable time. If you happen to visit Roseville, this place is one stop you have to go to get some good food.

I never liked sushi until I was brought here by a friend. Now I am addicted and must go at least once a month. Weekends are always crazy but I love going to happy hour bc some rolls are cheaper that means more sushi in my tummy without hurting my bank account.

LOVE Mikuni. Always delicious. Service is okay, unless it's super busy. Freaky edamame is/are(?) a must, love the train wreck, the marilyn, the carmen... well, pretty much everything.

FOOD: 1.) Masa 3 = This roll has sashimi, cream cheese, masago, thin lemon slice. Pretty good, their rolls are generous with the sashimi and masago, however the roll falls apart and the rice is a bit chewy. tsk. I want my sushi to melt in my mouth. 2.) Fresh Roll = I picked this one because it has sashimi inside and out. Annd because it has masago, I love masago! 3.) Seared Tuna = The taste reminded me of beef, because of the grilled flavor. 4.) Poki = They made poki from seared tuna, which as you can read in above description, I don't really like. * ) Their Food in General = Fusion style, which means many of their plates have non traditional sauces like sriracha, mayo, mustard on them, their menu consists mostly of names I've never heard of, and other nonsense like seared tuna sashimi. I like my sashimi how it should be- completely RAW. But at least their normal sashimi is good. SERVICE: Could've been better. Servers shouldn't auction off food, and they shouldn't ask you to clear away and make room for the dishes coming out. And our server wasn't born in US so there was a slight miscommunication in my order. But otherwise they have a good attitude. ATMOSPHERE: It's pleasant, but not fancy. Lots of big screens around. Bathroom has bidet toilet seats. Private section in restaurant for parties.

ME: Still NOT a fan of Sushi, but I do love a few things here. 1. Great lively atmosphere. It seems to be the only place in Roseville with character. All the time. Mushi Mushi! 2. BBQ Albacore Tuna with the red (slightly) spicy sauce. Absolutely the best anywhere! 3. Calarmari tempora appetizer 4. Big Bento boxes Their prices are on the high side, but I've never had a problem with the quality or atmosphere. And remember...you're still in Roseville!

It was like finding an oasis in the midst of, in this case, the howling wind & snow. Devouring the rolls at Mikunis - after what can only be described as a hellish ride, made the trip worthwhile. 6 party people - 5 delicious rolls Incredible Kaiser Spicy Johnny Train Wreck ? Can't remember the name but it's the only one wrapped in cucumber w/ponzu dipping sauce. Friendly staff, free miso, and just as good as the Midtown location.

Wish I didn't love this place so much. I've been many, many, many times and never once had a bad food experience. Waits are sometimes long, service is sometimes good, sometimes not, but the sushi is always fabulous! It's also high priced compared to other sushi places, but nothing else comes close. I had it today and hope to have it again tomorrow.

One of my favorite Japanese Restaurants. It's unfortunate I'm living two hours away from this. So whenever there's a chance, and I'm in the area, this is my choice for fresh sushi. It gets busy at times so you have to list your name. It's OK because it's worth the wait.

Gotta love when they greet you in Japanese as you are walked to your table! I've been twice so far, once we ate at the sushi bar and another time at a table. The names of the rolls are super entertaining and the rolls themselves are very creative! We've had rolls and sashimi there and I have yet to have a bad experience. The rolls range from classic to absolutely unique. The guy next to us at the bar even had the guys make him a mix of 2 rolls to create a whole new roll. The wait staff is hit and miss. Sometimes they get spread too thin and forget to bring you simple stuff, the other times there are all over it and super attentive. Just depends. Otherwise I am a fan and can't wait to go again.

This is another one of those "do you not understand where you are eating" situations. As a CALIFORNIA SUSHI place, Mikuni rates FIVE STARS. As a TRADITIONAL SUSHI place, Mikuni rates 2-3 STARS. There is a difference. Traditional sushi consists of mostly nigiri and sashimi. It's all about the freshness of the fish and the sushi chef accomplishing simple yet perfect presentation. Because of this, the difference between a good traditional sushi place and a world-class traditional sushi place is not that much when it comes to the food, as the variations on presentation and quality start to become undetectable as with such simple presentations the law of diminishing returns is in full effect. California sushi consists mainly of rolls. Although using fresher and better ingredients makes a difference, California sushi is all about the creativity of the chef. Whereas a traditional sushi place will distinguish themselves from the competition by having the freshest, fattiest tuna, a California sushi place will have the craziest spider roll, or the spiciest spicy tuna roll. You get the idea. Mikuni is right up there with the best when it comes to California sushi. Their gargantuan list of rolls contains something for everyone. And yes, their rolls are stuffed with things that don't really go together and are drenched in sauces. But the combinations work. Your average roll is going to have a bunch of ingredients and at least one if not two sauces all over it. This is why you are eating at Mikuni. They do this better than everyone else in town. Most of the complaints that I read about Mikuni are from people who think that Mikuni goes overly nuts on the rolls and sauces. You people are eating at the wrong place. This is like going to Benihana and complaining that they were overly showy with their cooking technique. I would have given Mikuni five stars, but their waitstaff needs a lesson at keeping updated with what is still in stock at the sushi bar. On two straight visits I have ordered something only to be informed almost fifteen minutes later that they were out of what I ordered. This is unacceptably long for any restaurant, but especially for a sushi bar.

This restaurant is on my top ten list of best sushi restaurants I've been to. They had an excellent selection of rolls and dishes. I like that they had torched rolls (something I haven't had since Genki Sushi in Hawaii). The pepperfin tuna, as suggested by a friend, was absolutely delicious. I will definitely return when Im in the Roseville area again.

Is this the place to go to get the best cuts of Toro? Maybe not. But if you like creative, playful rolls, excellent attention from the sushi bar, a welcoming ambiance and true family atmosphere, Mikuni can't be beat. I've been going to Mikuni for over 13 years, and they consistently provide excellent sushi, extremely creative rolls, and solid nigiri / chirashi / sashimi. Some of my fellow Yelpers will beguile them for serving pink ginger, or sushi that is too Americanized. Get over it. You live in suburbia, not in the big city. And in suburbia, Mikuni is above and beyond any competition they may face. The focus is definitely on the rolls. Pretty much any of them are delicious, and their special rolls, like the Trainwreck, or my personal favorite, the Judie 2, are incredibly delicious, well balanced, and fulfilling. The portions are more than adequate, the prices are reasonable, and I have yet to take someone here that left unsatisfied. Is it Nobu? No. But in the Sacramento area, there's a reason that Mikuni has expanded from one location to four or five, all of which are consistently packed. The reason: Mikuni kicks ass.

This place was fantastic! Although I live in the Bay Area, I have a house down in Roseville so I frequent there periodically. Was down there last weekend with some friends when we decided to catch a movie at the local Century theatres (bad choice!). They had a crappy selection of movies showing so we decided to ditch that plan. Noticed Mikuni's just nearby so we decided to check it out. First time I've ever been to a Mikuni's but it was definately a GREAT choice! We went around 8pm on Sat and although it seemed really crowded, we were seated right away. Had a FANTASTIC server named Christin (?) who made some great recommendations and was VERY speedy with her service. While waiting for our order (which didn't take very long at all) we enjoyed some green tea. Although usually not a big fan of the tea at most places, I found this tea to be really good! I musta drank like 10cups O.o Although the pitcher didn't hold too much, Christin was really good about getting us refills without us even having to ask and doing it so quickly we usually didn't even notice that it had gotten refilled already. One thing that was rather odd was that they had a ton of advertising throughout their menu. I was almost expecting to receive flyers to come with my meal. We ordered three rolls that night: The kaiser roll, the Incredible Roll, and The Benjamin roll. And I have to say, this place has GREAT rolls! Several reviews have commented that their regular sushi is not that great but I didn't try any so I couldn't say. After dinner we decided to go for some desert. I have to say their menu options for desert are a bit lacking but being a Japanese restaurant, I wasn't expecting a whole heck of a lot to begin with. I ordered the Xango cheesecake and was a little confused when it arrived. It came in about 4-5pieces each wrapped in a little hot crispy whaffer. Definately not what I'm thinking when I think cheesecake. But it was delicious! After our meal, we chatted with Christin for a little bit and inquired as to other areas around Roseville that we could try out being as we were new to the area. She made some personal recommendations that she's tried and suggested some dishes we could order there. At $14 a roll, the price definately isn't the cheapest. Fantastic service, fast servers with almost no wait time, and DELICIOUS food! What more can you ask for? Definately coming back here next time I'm down in the area!

Love Mikuni, but this location has been my least WOW moment. I went during lunch which could have been my mistake the wait was about 30 minutes. This location is quite a bit smaller then some of the other locations. I can't complain too much. I enjoyed my food as always, I'm just use to the evening crowd where there's a bar to sit at and wait.

If I could eat here everyday I would. I love this place -- the food is great, I've tried a lot of their rolls but some of my favorites are the "Marilyn Monroll" and the "Four Twenty-Eight" roll. In addition to great food, I have also had great service each time I have dined here. I realize there are other Mikuni Restaurants in town and they probably have excellent service as well, but since I've had such good experiences at this location, I go out of my way to go to this particular one.

They have a pretty good deal 2 for $45 3-4 course meal. The food was okay. Not bad but not great. We had the puff daddy appetizer. It was good but a little salty. The chicken teriyaki was good. I did not care for either roll we got (the nine one one roll and I can't remember the other). The chocolate lava cake was good and the cocktails were great. The service was excellent, fast and friendly. We ended up spending $100 on the meal and 2 cocktails each. Didn't taste like a $100 meal to me. Probably won't go back.

This is our first visit. I asked the waiter if that yelper guy Doug has really been here every day. He answered without a blink and said "Oh Doug? Yeah, he comes in everyday for happy hour". So that guy is legit! When we sat down my girl got some cheater chopsticks, crayons & coloring page. I like that. I ordered a chirache don, my hubby got some nigiri & we ordered a kids bento box with cali roll & shrimp tempura. The bento was 6.50, it had 2 shrimp, 4 piece cali roll, plain white rice, a couple whole tomatoes, orange slice, and a small box of botan rice candy which looks like animal crackers. Oh, we got some edemame when we sat down. The redtaurant looks nice, staff are friendly. There's big screen tvs everywhere. Its noisy but not too loud that you cant carry on a convo. There's an upper & lower area with sushi bar on the upper level. The lower looks more like a liquor bar. Most of the sushi chefs are caucasian or hispanic if that matters to you. The chirache came nicely equipped with the standards; salmon, tuna, eel, yellowtail, octopus, halibut, and egg with some seaweed salad in a bowl. My camera is broken or I would snap a pic. Salmon had a slightly salty but melt-in-your-mouth taste. Tuna was good too. I asked the closest chef if there were more farmed or wild fish & he named off only one (sea trout) if that matters or that he remembered. Parker was our waiter. He was attentive, came by to check on us. My hubby enjoyed his fish, said his fav was yellowtail. Then I ordered a Marilyn Monroll. It was a bit heavy on the sauce but tasty with the shrimp, cado & scallop. All-in-all it was tasty, enjoyed our lunch out & felt we made a good choice. We would come back...maybe not everyday, but we'll be back.

Since it my husband and I we opted for the 2 people for $45 four course menu. Really nice option to offer to customers. For first course we had the Fuji Ebi Salad which was prawn, pine nut, apple, and dressing on spinach leaves very refreshing. I don't remember what we had for second course. Third Course we had Marilyn Monroll and James Roll both were delicious. I would have asked for the sauce to be on the side if all possible. Got to be a lot of sauce for me in the end. For dessert we had the mochi ice cream option Very cute and exotic.

Amazing as always. Their incredible roll, benjamin roll, and japanese mafia roll are without doubt some of my favorites. The salmon nigiri with lemon is really fresh and light, and you cant leave without getting the freaky edamame.

I found Mikuni a year ago and now I eat there almost every day. 300 of 365 days a year. Yes, I'm lucky and addicted to the Japanese mafia roll. For something really special, ask Ed to make you a clam soup, it's not on the menu and you'll be ready for a nap after enjoying it. 5 stars!!!!!!!

3 stars for the food! The food is delicious! Sushi is so fresh and tasty. You can tell it's good quality. Unfortunately, this is where any positive experience stopped. The service was horrific. I gave Mikuni 2 chances before I wrote this review. My husband grew up in the area and has always raved about the quality of sushi. He was so excited to bring me here, but they really screwed up the first time. We went in about 1 hour to closing and it was not busy at all. Service was SO slow! It took 10 minutes to just get someone to pay attention to us and another 10 for water. By the time we finally ordered we waited 30 minutes for sushi for 3 people (about 2 rolls each). I ordered the roll with teriyaki chicken and cream cheese except there was no cream cheese. When I pointed it out to the waiter, he pointed to the inside of my roll at the smallest amount of substance that I literally have ever seen (I almost needed glasses). It looked like the cream cheese was accidentally put in my roll and then scraped off. I said, "really?" And he said, "well I can get you a side of cream cheese." Thanks, but scooping cream cheese on top of my roll is not quite the same. The second time we came here was not much better. The wait wasn't as long, but I honestly don't know what they do back there. I've been eating sushi for more than half my life and I've had some of the best sushi in Hawaii and it has never taken someone so long to prepare rolls. Servers could be way more friendly. Both times they were just OK. I'm sure I'll be back because the quality is good, but when I decide where I want to eat it's more to me than just quality of food. I would take a less quality sushi restaurant if it meant I didn't have to spend my entire day trying to get service from people who can't be bothered.

I love Mikunis and I love the Citrus Blossom. This dish is seared tuna in an amazing orange glaze and is absolutely delicious. Kind of pricey considering the amount of tuna you get but the food is amazing and the customer service is great. Lastly the puff daddy, holy mother of yummy- deep fried shrimp stuffed crab salad thingy's with a sauce I can't describe (I always order a side of the sauce to poor over the 4-5 pieces that come on the deep fried goodness).

Hi-ya! The place just re-opened after some kind of expansion and still had that paint smell...which if you're a paint sniffer is fine, but otherwise detracts from the experience. Our server was helpful and on point with our orders and had good suggestions on things to try. The non-fishy food hit the spot for those in our party who prefer land animals and the sushi rolls...especially pepperfin was yummy. The place is good for casual dining and is perfect for large parties whereas a little bit of noise is not a big deal.

For dinner we spent roughly $145ish for two people without tip included. Some of the things we ordered are listed down below: (Sorry, Unfortunately I do not remember everything we ordered that evening..I really need to start writing them down to keep track of what we ordered for future reviews.) Sashimi Combo $18.95 Chef's choice combination of today's fresh fish Tommy Roll $16.95 Deep fried soft shell crab, spicy avocado blend, onion, masago, soy bean wrapper, spicy tuna, crab mix, Spicy Dream sauces Japanese Mafia Roll $14.50 Scallop, shrimp, crab mix, cream cheese, avocado, salmon, sauce, torched, masago and onion Amaebi Nigiri (Market Price) $13*? (I believe we paid at least $13 for two pieces) Sweet Shrimp Albacore Pepperfin $12.95 Thinly sliced albacore tuna, citrus soy dressing, jalapenos, sesame seeds Rainbow Roll $10.50 Kanikama, avocado, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, masago and onion Spicy Johnny Roll $10.50 Spicy tuna, panko shrimp, avocado, eel, sauce, masago and onion Yuzu $9 Calamari Lightly fried squid, tossed with yuzu salt, jalapenos, spicy sauce Philadelphia Roll $8.95 Smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado and masago Flaming Shrooms $8.50 (5/5 --- Delicious!) Tempura mushrooms with crab mix, cream cheese, jalapenos, special sauce, shaved bonito flakes and onions Puff Daddy $6.95 Crab mix-stuffed shrimp tempura with creamy house sauce, onions, masago Atmosphere (4/5)- Fun atmosphere, always filled with plenty of people.. good vibes. Service (4.5/5) Service was good, very friendly and attentive. Food (4/5) Food is tasty, served at proper temperatures etc. They may be a little too generous on the sauce though. I honestly think the main thing that keeps me coming back are the Flaming Shrooms! On a side note, they have great happy hour deals etc.! Overall, I do like this restaurant, and I honestly think it's one of the best restaurants to get sushi in this area.. However, the rolls are very similar to those you can find at AYCE sushi restaurants, so why spend roughly $150 for two people when you can get basically the same stuff unlimited for $50?

Guy cashier seemed arrogant. I Ordered food to go. Asked for suggestions telling him I was not familiar with a lot of sushi. He suggested a sushi with fried fish. I said okay. Asked for another suggestion. He asked if I like fish like I'm ignorant and don't know what a sushi restaurant would offer. I was offended. He appeared to have his nose in the air for a representative of the restaurant. Would not visit again.

BEST SUSHI IN SACRAMENTO. But today, service was HORRIBLE. It was my birthday lunch, and we got the adults lunch in a reasonable amount of time, but waited for our 3 kids lunches for another 30 minutes! And the restaurant was only 1/2 full. Carmen was our server. She said they "ran out of California rolls." Really? You expect us to buy that? Their order was put in at the same time as the adults! And, to add insult to injury, we had to ask for refills of tea and soda. We are regulars - at least twice a month- and we have never had such horrible service.

Chirishi was great. I would have liked the pieces of the fish to be a little bigger, but I'm a big believer in quality over quantity and the quality of fish here was fantastic. Service here was friendly but not over bearing which I enjoyed. I will definitely be back.

Thank you, Taro and Team, for having a gluten-free menu for us high-maintenance customers that have special dietary needs. And it all tastes so good! I havd never been disappointed with anything ordered at a Mikuni restaurant, either before or after I had to worry about being gluten-free. I didn't even like sushi before Mikuni. Plus, Taro is an incredible asset to our community in Granite Bay and the Greater Sacramento region. We have been blessed with a great restauranteur in Taro Mikuni.

This was the greatest sushi experience. Everything was fresh and delicious. We brought our children, it was very kid friendly . Un less you are a sushi snob, you will enjoy this restaurant.

Absolutely the best sushi in town. I think for me its not just the quality of food as a whole but you can tell the quality of each ingredient is excellent. I've been to places where the tobiko (eggs) is runny, mushy, and very unappealing. There are less expensive sushi places but when it comes to sushi you get what you pay for. Mikuni is the best!

I came here for the first time yesterday and loved it! The service was quick, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The miso soup was good, not great.... But the sushi day amazing! I had the hand roll with the soft shell crab, and then a Carmichael roll. If I did it again, I'd probably do the hand roll with a nori wrap instead of the soy, but the Carmichael roll was great! I'll definitely be coming back here.

About every 5 years my wife talks me into going back to this place. Today, I went back for Happy Hour. What a joke. Should be called Not Happy Hour. Sushi was just ok, at best. Service was horrible. Price was very expensive. Had to go back home at get something to eat after this lunch. I will try it again in about 10 yrs. btw, people giving this place 5 stars are the same people who voted for Obama.

A friend brought me here during a visit to Northern CA. Very busy restaurant! We arrived at 6pm. We left at 7:30 and was surprised to see the masses waiting for a table. The menu is endless...I didn't know what to order at first. I felt overwhelmed. Usually restaurants with a lot of items can lack in substance and quality. Not the case here! Wished I lived there because they are very creative with the sushi menu. I got a Hawaiian style poke salad and a roll of their specialty sushi. I was satisfied with my meal.

Well, it's official. Taro Arai has lost control of his pirate ship or he just doesn't give a fcuk. This place went from middle-end sushi spot with moderately classy ambiance to run-off-the-mill sushi dive. The remodel is lamentable. It's a diner now. It used to have good to fair service with occasional slowness and hiccups. Now, it's just outright slow and forgetful service and they can't tell sushi from sashimi. Food quality suffered most. Raw stuff is not as fresh and high quality (appearance, texture, smell, flavor) as it used to be. Taro Arai has cut corners, has spread himself too thin and gave up control to crappy managers who can't hire or train people to perform even accceptable service.

We love going to Mikuni's and are never disappointed with our order. But today I must say I was very disappointed with my order. I ordered my favorite Hamachi Kama to go and when I got home they did not pack any ponzu sauce. That really gives the flavor because Hamachi Kama is just grilled fish. So without the ponzu sauce it was really dry fish. The last time I was in the restaurant and ordered this, the server did not bring me any ponzu sauce. I had to ask for it. The servers do not know the menu and what suppose to come with the order. I was really disappointed tonight.

I do not recommend this place. We were there because my training class was in Homewood hotel. Decided to come here after class to experience the sushi. We sat at the bar with three chefs in there. The closest one is a young Asian guy with glasses. He had a bad attitude and cursing all the time. From what I've learned from Japanese culture they are always polite and well mannered. This young chef is rude and not willing to serve. The food was fresh, but the taste is not up to par. Seems like they don't really want to make us oysters when we ordered the dish. Since we don't like rolls, the food we picked is more delicate and only come in smaller dishes. We ended up ordering 5 small dishes and paid the bill of $65 without tip and went few blocks down for Thai food. Can't stand the services from the chef. Very disappointed!

Yes. Yes. Yes. I absolutely love Mikuni!!! I have never, in the years and years that I have been dinning here, ever had anything I haven't loved. My favorites are the freaky edamame, BBQ Tuna app. And the fair oaks roll. They also have the best miso soup I have ever had. I love coming here on my bday for the opportunity to spin the wheel!! I do miss the sweet little puffer fish in the aquarium out front.

Went here for lunch. The remodel makes it even better than before. Now the decision to go here or Kaizen is dependent only on where I am at the time! Either location is my first choice for sushi...always fresh...always YUM!! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was the table service...but maybe it was just an "off" day! The chefs were friendly and especially Ed was helpful in exploring special new things!! I will definitely be back again and again!!

Went with my boyfriend to this restaurant because he absolutely loves this place, and I understand why. I used to work at a sushi place in my hometown in the bay area, so I am pretty critical of sushi restaurants. We had the BBQ White Tuna appetizer, ten pieces of sashimi (tuna [maguro] and yellowtail [hamachi]), the Annie roll, and the 911 roll. The BBQ White Tuna appetizer was AMAZING! It was cooked oh so perfectly, with a well cooked outside with a nice raw inside. The sauce that went with it was absolutely wonderful as well! I wish I had more than one piece, but I had to make room for my sashimi! The sashimi was one of the best quality I have ever had at a sushi restaurant. It was smooth and it did not have that slimy taste/texture fish can sometimes have. I have no complaints here, and to be honest I do think their fish quality makes this an upper tier sushi restaurant. Their sashimi is probably in my top 3 list for best fish quality. The Annie roll was pretty good. I wish I had more of this roll as well, but it was more for my boyfriend since he ordered it and I wanted something hot. This is delicious and I would recommend! The 911 roll was boring, and it was a very cheap way to create something spicy. Nothing else on the menu seemed spicy enough, and I've had rolls like this before with the description they gave. It sounded better on the menu. It was really plain as a roll, and when they mentioned there was a spicy sauce, I really feel like they should have just specified it was Sriracha. Personally, my body does not take pure Sriracha well, and I thought that the sauce would be a spicier version of some kind of spicy mayo given the price of this roll, but I was wrong. I did make this roll taste a little less boring when I drenched it in hot chili oil. The service was just average. I was only a little miffed when the waitress only gave me a thin amount of hot chili oil, and I felt bad about asking her if I oculd have significantly more. However, I will say that I am on the extreme for loving spicy foods because of my Asian heritage, so I do not blame her. I just felt kind of horrible for making her walk back and get more. I also was out of water quite a few times, but I lived to tell this review so I am okay with that. Nothing out of the ordinary for service. One thing that made this less of an experience for me was I just felt some things were over priced (ex. the 911 roll, but there were other things). I think many rolls on their menu just sounded too typical, but I've also been exposed to a plethora of sushi restaurants in the SF Bay Area so I think I am a bit spoiled with seeing creative rolls. Also, I don't like how they did not give a description of what kind of sauce was on the roll. They simply just put sauce, and while this isn't the most important thing, it really matters to me. I like seeing more description for food because I do have medical problems that make me sensitive to certain foods and flavors. And I am sure I am not the only one. I wish I could put a 4.5, but I'll round up! I can't wait to come back again when I am in the area!

I came here on a Wednesday evening and it was pretty packed. They have a main dining room with a sushi bar on the left side when you walk in and a much larger group area on the right side with a bar as well. I sat at the bar on the left and they had about 10 sushi chefs all making orders. The main dining area was loud and good for small groups. I ordered the classic rainbow roll and the Judie Two roll with regular raw tuna rather than the seared tuna. Both were very good, very fresh fish and nice presentation. The size of the rolls were up to standard with other good sushi restaurants and they had reasonable prices. I would definitely come back here again for the fresh sushi.

What an amazing place! I was skeptical of sushi in Roseville. Especially a spot in a strip mall. Step aside skeptics - this place is the bomb! Cleverly named rolls (the Marilyn monroll) live up to their superstar names. Lots of tempura items wrapped into rolls, plus the traditionalist. We were in and out pretty quickly - they move it song quickly. It might be different on the weekends. Don't miss the lobster rolls. Yum

One of my favorite sushi spots! Always great service from the friendly staff. The rolls are consistent in flavor and made with quality ingredients.

I have never been a sushi lover but my wife convinced me to try. I have since been back multiple times and enjoy it every time. The food is awesome! The atmosphere is unlike anything I've been to & not pretentious. And the secret is out!....it's ALWAYS busy here!

Food is excellent - service so-so - but it's the prices that will get you! There were 4 of us. 3 had ice tea and 1 had a beer - no dessert - a few rolls, some tempura broccoli and a salmon box - $180 - OUCH! Next time we'll go to Blue Nami down the street

Late night dinner at mikuni and had incredible service by Trevor. He offered suggestions and did a great job! We loved it and would highly recommend Mikuni and requesting to be seated in Trevor's section again! Great job.

Alright so me and my buddy are from Nevada and wanted some sushi and this place popped up on my google search so we decided to try it out. The only reason I gave this place two stars and not one was because the waitress was so friendly. First of all the sushi is ungodly expensive and there is no all you can eat. The rolls range from $7 for basic California roll to over $20 a roll. So we say ok we will have a roll or two and leave. Order a simple California roll and it takes almost 15 minutes to make, not to mention when I get it, the thing falls apart because they don't know how to pack the rice properly. We also had to pretty much flag the sushi chefs down to get service and we were the only two at the bar. I will not be trying this place again and will not recommend it to anyone. After going in there I know why there wasn't anyone in the place during lunch time.

4 because it is still great sushi, but noticeably lower quality than before. We have been coming for years and always enjoyed it. We went in yesterday and noticed that rolls are smaller and have less fish. Also it isn't a"treat" anymore. It's equal quality ad Arigato but higher price ... time to step it back up Mikuni !

If you love fresh sushi, sashimi and Japanese kitchen, Mikuni and their Kaizer at The Fountains is going to forever become your favorite. Infinite choices on the menu, consisting of the fresh ingredients, great atmosphere and absolutely best customer service has been rock solid. I found them almost twenty years ago on Hazel Ave in Fair Oaks. Benjamin, Incredibles, Mafia, Japanese Burrito, or simply California or Fair Oaks or Teriyaki Chicken for Kids, you will love it! Check out their happy hour!! BBQ Tuna and their Cucumber salad is a must, unless you want some soup. Love the atmosphere and consistent quality and freshness! Thank you Mikuni! (Note that for Super Bowl and holidays they have great specials!) PS almost forgot, check the party platters, at least consider it for your birthday or other party. We always order for New Years Eve..

I am hungry just yelping this place! Love this sushi. this location is probably the worst out of all of them but the sushi is just as good. My favorites are the michi and the Marilyn Monroll. This place has the freshest fish in the area. Taro really knows what he's doing. They are a chain but really they are a family business. Order the Puff Daddy for a special treat.

I use to think mikuni was the most hygienic sushi bar, I nearly took my whole family every other week spending hundreds of dollars because my whole family loves the tasteful meals, however this time I found a huge long piece of hair inside my food. All the times I use to hear mikuni was overpriced, and my thought was "I AM PAYING FOR ITS QUALITY". Now I don't think it's just overpriced, but unhygienic. What happened just reflects the effort they put into enforcing CA hygiene food regulations. I might sound like I'm making a huge deal out of a piece of hair, but when I was bitting into my food I felt it in between my teeth! So gross!!! I DONT KNOW IF THAT PERSON COULD HAVE SCALP DECEASE or IF THAT PERSON EVEN WASHED THEIR HAIR ... And that landed inside my mouth. Very disgusting. I didn't care about getting my money back or getting a free appetizer next time I came in. I cared about losing my appetite and spending more money on medicine for nausea. Way to go with the managers offers and NO APOLOGY he went directly to offering free appetizer or money back, letting me leave without and apology, not once was I rude about my situation, just would've been nice to at least hear an apology.

This was the first place I ever tried sushi of any kind and instantly became hooked! They are doing a good job trying new things and flavors. Flaming mushrooms is a favorite and must have! The super bowl party/buffet is WAY worth it! The party platters they offer are phenomenal and worth more than the cost of them. I actually took one of the rolling classes that they offer, only the first level and it was awesome and am looking forward to a time when I can take the other levels! First place I think of when I want sushi. Recently did a remodel after 16 years or so and it looks fantastic!

I went there last week for a Birthday lunch for my wife. It was already slightly crowded at 11:30am -- we waited about 10 minutes for a table. Since this was our first visit, we used that time to get a sneak peek at the menu. My wife was very glad to have a dedicated gluten free menu, which made thing much simpler than having to ask about each item on the regular menu. Service from the waitress was good, not overly quick given the crowd, but she was nice and tried to be as attentive as possible. The only hiccup there was on my wife's champagne order, which came out as Chardonnay (same winery caused the mixup). We sent it back and the bartender had the nerve to return it, telling us he was right. The manager stepped in and told the (new) bartender he was mistaken. :) Overall the food was good. Both my daughter and I ordered the agidashi tofu, which was fine but not as good as PK, which uses panko. My nigiri sushi and handroll were excellent. My wife really liked her teriyaki beef and veggie rolls. To top it off, she won the grand prize on the birthday wheel, a $100 gift card! Score...

3rd visit, and the reason is that they have the best sushi in the Sacramento area. You must have the Albacore Pepperfin.. Yumm. Bring friends, it is a great hang out, and awesome sushi to boot.

Hands down favorite sushi place in Roseville. Awesome food. All the food tastes fresh and the sauces and combinations of flavors the chef comes up with are incredible. Speaking of incredible, the incredible roll is one of my favorites. Always start off with a 3 pieces seared BBQ white tuna with BOTH sauces and the flaming shrooms are awesome just ask to get them cut in half because they're pretty big and they'll be easier to share. If you come in for lunch, they have good lunch combos for good prices. They have an iron chef combo which is perfect for me because I like rolls and nigiri and you get both! Not to mention the incredible service, we sat in the bar area and had an awesome server, Matt. He had a ton of tables but had no shortage of customer service and swiftness to get your food and drinks out as quickly as possible without making us feel rushed. All in all every time I've come here the food comes out perfectly and the service to match. Thank you, Matt for the incredible service and all the chefs for an incredible dining experience.

Love this place like always! It's a bit busy so allow plenty of time and a bit pricey compared to the other sushi joints in town but I still love the place. I suggest trying the dragonberry mojito. It's yummy!

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. My husband and I are very picky when it comes to sushi. The rice has to be right - not too sweet and mushy. The fish has to be FRESH, no bad smells and not slimy. The sauces have to compliment and not overpower. The wasabi has to be FRESH! Unfortunately (or fortunately for them), many sushi eaters do not care about these things and don't know the difference. But Mikuni delivers on all these fronts, making it our favorite sushi place of all we have been to in any city, including highly rated places in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and New York City. If you are new to sushi, the wait staff is helpful and the chefs will even surprise you with an original creation, if you are feeling brave. Do yourself a favor and order the BBQ white tuna as a starter. My favorite roll is Judie 2, but you really can't go wrong at this place. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, the price is good, and you leave satisfied every time. But be careful. If you like run of the mill all you can eat sushi places, this place might ruin you.

I read the reviews and tried some top recommendations. BBQ Tuna was the best dish of the night. Cooked perfectly, excellent mesquite flavor and raw in the middle. Puff Daddy flavor and texture was great. Zig zag hand roll was sushi guacamole on sushi rice and it worked well. Meld roll was bland and fish quality is not as good as I hoped. Molten lava cake was dormant. Cheese cake egg roll thing was like a yummy blintz. Great service!

I do not understand how Mikuni sets the standard for good Japanese food and sushi. We went for my buddy's birthday with eight in our party. The service was horrible. We had to ask for our drinks three times and it took nearly a half hour. Our orders took nearly 40 minutes and only half the group was served. We complained to the owner and he did not seem to care much. OVER RATED!

I've been living in Roseville for about a year now and this is the first time I've been to the Mikuni at this location. Odd, I know, especially when I frequent the other locations often. Rolled into this location with a coworker after having a rough week on a Tuesday for Happy Hour. Yes, you heard me correct, on day 2 of the work week I was pretty much tapped out and wanting to say "I give up." My coworker and I were graciously tended to by Matt. Poor Matt, we were both being sarcastic and indecisive throughout our happy hour happiness and he put up with us with a great attitude. He persuaded us to opt for a Mojito Pitcher instead of single cocktails since Mikuni was doing a $18 special. We started off with the Freaky Edamame, an oldie but always a good one. They were a bit on the saltier side today, but it was all chased down by my mojito anyway so I did not mind. My favorite of the night was the BBQ Albacore Tuna with the red & white sauce. We really didn't need the sauces at all since the tuna was deliciously BBQ'd with the sauce on it already. The special of the night was hamachi nigiri, but it wasn't as memorable as I hoped since it was lackluster next to everything else that packed flavor. The Fair Oaks roll was a nice balance of a little bit of fried panko shrimp, but I wish we had just stopped there with the rolls that had fried bits. But of course, in our attempts to sober up, we got the Puff Daddy roll. I really didn't care for it at all since the whole roll was fried in tempura batter and the creamy imitation crab insides just absorbed the oil really heavily. I'm more of a fresh raw fish roll kind of person, so I will pass on that one next time despite the funny name. Thanks for the always pleasant service and experience, until next time Mikuni Roseville!

I don't doubt this is the better sushi place around, but don't get the 45$ coursed meal. My wife and I agreed the value wasn't there. The rolls are smaller and there seemed to be a lot of fillers to create the illusion of value. Stick to the individual items. 90$ +drinks+tip=dissatisfied. Expensive night out for let down.

Unfortunately service poor again. I'll go back to my original comment...the food is wonderful-why compromise the customer experience with poor service? Food shows up with no plates...drinks half way through dinner because the bar is backed up, did not clear the table prior to serving. Very disappointing.

Mikuni is always my number one sushi spot. The Roseville location is convenient, and there is always plenty of parking. The staff here is great, very friendly and accommodating. Now on to the food... My bf and I usually do the 2 for $40 deal. You get two appetizers, two rolls, and one dessert all for $40. Great deal! I love the freaky edamame, and I always get the Rabbit roll since I'm vegetarian. My bf loves the BBQ tuna. Their food is amazing, always super fresh and freaking delicious. I've never had a bad experience. Love love love! It always hits the spot!

My family and I go to this location every few months. It is one of my favorite sushi spots in the Sacramento region. I will usually order the Carmen Roll along side with a Nabeyaki Udon, which is perfect this winter considering how cold it has been. The Carmen Roll is superb. I don't know what the two sauces are made of but they taste amazing. This location does get quite busy, rightfully so, but it is worth the wait. The Mikuni family of restaurants are great!

Really sad about having to do this. I used to come here all the time when I lived in the area but haven't been regularly in over three years. Unfortunately the standards have definately dropped. We ordered the sashimi combo plate and the fish had no flavor whatsoever :( also didn't help that one was really questionable in terms of whether it was good or not. Disgustingly slimy. The slices of sashimi were really thin too. Seems like they are trying to cut a lot of corners now. Sad to see this place go downhill so much.

My daughters and I came here for lunch and had a few things we thought other possible customers should know before coming. First of all, the service was slow. Second, they didn't give complimentary miso soup or edamame like most other Japanese restaurants for the high price the meal already is. I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that doesn't include miso soup w Katsu don considered its a whopping $11.50! What a rip off! Btw, there's quit a bit of fat in the karrage chicken!

Yelp Challenge 365 # 90/365 Been to Mikini's at Northstar Lake Tahoe and was curious to try the Roseville location. A definite difference in atmosphere between both locations but both, good! Fish is FRESH. Price is RIGHT. Drinks are GOOD. Staff and management are PLEASANT. I'm guessing Mikini employee rules begin with GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE; followed by just as GOOD food.... Aerosmith Sushi- crab, avacado, sprouts, wrapped in thin cucumber (cucumber wrap replaced the nori) Spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop roll= $3 each- a bargain for the amount of fish is stuffed in the hand roll. A must to try if you are in the Sac/Roseville area

Had dinner here because of a recommendation of someone at the hotel. It was really busy on Friday night, which is typically a good thing. I should mention that we are very spoiled in our hometown by our local sushi restaurant. That being said, this was certainly not the mom and pop feel of our local restaurant, but rather the upscale Japanese life. The service was good and Dylan was very attentive. We ordered the two for $45 deal. After looking through the menu at the prices it seemed like a good deal. My husband is much more adventurous in regard to sushi (I eat California roll and Philadelphia Roll). The two for $45 was a shared appetizer, a shared entrée, two rolls, and a shared dessert. We shared the Puff Daddy which was crab stuffed tempura shrimp wrapped like a roll. Only we didn't know it was wrapped like a roll and we prefer soy paper. I was disappointed that Dylan had not mentioned that when I specifically asked if they offered soy paper when we started ordering. We shared the mixed tempura (shrimp and veggies). It was ok, but the tempura batter was too thick and greasy. I had a roll with avocado and cucumber because the California roll is not an option on the two for $45 deal. Husband had a roll with tuna, unagi, shrimp, and crab with spicy sauce. He liked it a lot. However, for me the soy paper was off. I am used to strawberry soy paper which I think has no flavor (which is good because it doesn't add it to the roll), but this was yellow and tasted citrusy (perhaps lemon). It didn't pair well for me. Then we had our dessert to go since we were trying to make it to a movie. I found it odd that they didn't offer traditional Japanese desserts, rather mousse cake, cheesecake, etc. Overall, it was ok. I have had better and next time I would find somewhere else to eat.

Boy, this place is busy! Kinda chaotic with so many people waiting to dine. As you walk in and pass by the sushi bar, you'll get an earful of "irashaimase" greetings from the sushi chefs and workers. We ordered gyoza as an app for kids but strangely they came out next to last. So much for trying to feed the kids first. The server had a lot of large tables so service was not the best... To be expected though, I guess. Food was decent - portions big, nabeyaki udon was tasty, tonkatsu meat was dry, bento good, but ambiance is a little too hectic for me.

I always stop here if I'm shopping at the Galleria. I always get the Deluxe Chirashi bowl . I love the atmosphere, it's a HAPPY , energetic place and you can feel it from the sushi chefs at the bar . Their rolls are awesome too! Sushi is fresh and was never disappointed when we eat here. Wish they had a location in Chico !

Ate here last night with a friend for dinner. Hadn't been here for a while so was surprised with the new makeover they gave the place. Loved how they fully opened up the right side for additional seating because there was almost ALWAYS a wait whenever I came here before for dinner. The new menu makeover was a little confusing to read (I prefer the old menu.. easier to read). Ordered the "Aerojet" roll. Delicious. It was a roll wrapped in cucumber with rice, ahi tuna, & avocado. Little pricey almost $14 for 8 pieces of sushi. Can't put a price on quality though.. Mikunis never disappoints! They do not give free miso soup with dinner anymore though.. SAD. It is only a dollar extra but still........

Mikuni has completely ruined me with its delicious delights. I love Mikuni sushi so much, that any time I attempt to go anywhere else, I always regret not coming to your spot(s). I would give seven stars if I could. The Peter 2, BBQ Tuna, Garlic Salmon, Black and White, and Oyster Shooters are where it's at. I'll try anything on this menu though. Every time I come here, my order is correct, the service is prompt and friendly, and the food top notch. I don't understand the negative reviews. I've been coming to Mikuni for over a decade, and it has always been a pleasant, palate pleasing experience.

Nothing but love for Taro! A trip home to visit my family is not complete until I've made a stop or two at Mikuni! I crave the BBQ albacore in red sauce, a few rolls (favorites are the Marilyn, Mafia & Incredible), and a draft Sapporo (or two). Service is always friendly & efficient, and they have a great happy hour (other deals include the 2 for $40 & some nice lunch specials). I love love love Mikuni!

Hands down best sushi! I've never had any problems here. The people working are always very nice. This is our go to place for any night out! It's almost too addicting! I had to go here for a class, and I was not impressed with the service. The waiter dropped our chopsticks, then proceeded to pick them up and tell us that they were still fine. Also, he got our drink orders incorrect. The reason I am giving a 3 instead of lower, is because the food there was very good. I was impressed by the quality of the sushi, and how good the rolls tasted. It may have just been our bad luck to get this particular server, but the food was definitely good.

  • Jenny G.

My husband and I came here for dinner and boy is this place popular! It was packed and the wait was long by the time we were done and leaving. They have a huge seating area and 2 bar areas where customers can dine. The service here is pretty slow and the food isn't all that great, I've had way better sushi elsewhere. I understand sushi contains rice but man they give you tons of rice and skimp on the actual ingredients. We order the spider roll and it was so nasty we basically didn't touch it after 1 piece. It was obviously overcooked.

  • Judy C.

Great sushi and great service! We've been here a couple of times for lunch and dinner! They have an eclectic menu for sushi and non sushi eaters. We like the Marilyn Monroe, cherry blossom, lion king, dragon and lots more! The oysters and the gyoza are delicious appetizer. The scallop appetizer was a little disappointing, it lacked something. The staff and chefs are always friendly! Mikuni is our go to for fresh and yummy sushi.

Totally mind blown by the good reviews??? This was the worst sushi I have ever had in my life! The fish stunk and tasted rotten, the fish on top of the roll didn't even look like a cut of fish! It was a mushy mess that you couldn't even pick up with your chopsticks, both rolls fell apart as soon as touched. All I can say is sushi was ruined for me for a minute because of here. Fail fail fail even down to the hipster waiter with his fashion statement of glasses taped in the middle with no lenses hahaha ew so disgusting blah

Hands down this is the best Sushi I have ever had! Honestly I have been to a lot of sushi restaurants and Mikuni has blown them all out of the park. They use the freshest fish and most delicious sauces. Every preparation area is incredibly clean and the sushi chefs are great! I feel like a little snob now because I only want Mikuni rolls, the other restaurants are no comparison. If you are reading this post and debating on going there for dinner.... GO! Not to mention the happy is awesome, as well as the rescue roll:) A++

Simply put, this place serves the freshest and most delicious sushi on the planet. I have been around the block a few times and nothing has compared. Who would have thought that one of the finest sushi restaurants in the world was located in the Sacramento area.

I love the ambience and energy at all the Mikuni Sushi restaurants locations. They consistently have the freshest, and most creative combination of sushi & specialty sauce dishes! People always suggest the new sushi places to try, but nothing compares to Mikuni's in my opinion! My personal favorite dishes are the BBQ Tuna, the Tommy Roll, and Black and White Sashimi... oh yeah, cant forget illegal asparagus, and freaky edamame...

I don't really get all the hype with this place. It's okay. I've never left fully satisfied. It *tries* to be "good" traditional Japanese but doesn't quite hit the mark. It toes the line between Americanized junk food sushi and the real deal, and doesn't really succeed on either side. The fish never tastes fresh and usually leaves a bad aftertaste. It's expensive for mediocre sushi. Our friends are obsessed with this place and are always asking us to go, but I always leave hungry so I try to avoid having to end up here.

Always 5 stars! The sake, beer, freaky edamame, & the sushi rolls were soo good- Marilyn Monroe, rainbow roll and others. My hubby has a tradition getting the oyster shooters w his family here. They've been going since the original restaurant that burnt down years ago. His dad has VIP points racked up ;) We finished off a Sac Kings game and came here for a late night dinner. Once we finished the bday boy- my husband spinned the infamous wheel and to our surprise, all of us screaming like we won the lottery- won the $100 gift card! This was 2 nights ago and we still can't believe it! Highly recommend you check it out for yourself~

I was disappointed the last time I went to Mikuni because this is the third consecutive time I've been that I have felt the fish has tasted fishy (not fresh). It's not what I've come to expect for Mikuni quality.

Always very fresh fish and they have a very large menu. Always something for everyone.

My hubby and I dine here all the time. We always sit at the sushi bar...the servers and sushi chefs are always nice and accommodating. They even have a decent happy hour.....yes you will pay more than blue nami but the quality speaks for itself....way way way better quality of fish!

Favorite sushi place in the world! We've tried sushi from New York to San Francisco and Mikuni is hands down the best! BBQ Albacore... amazing!! Try the Sake Aburri it's not on the menu anymore but it's soooooooo good.

This is my favorite "go to" sushi place in the area. Food- Sashimi is always fresh. Have tried a handful of the specialty rolls & have only been disappointed in the 911 Roll. Atmosphere- The crowd differs from night to night, but even when packed the sushi chefs & wait staff are very attentive & friendly. Great for casual or a work dinner. I try to come at least once a week if I can :)

MOST AMAZING SUSHI I HAVE EVER HAD! All of my friends and family from out of town cannot wait to come back to Sacramento just to have Mikuni again. It is the highest quality sushi around. It is apparent that the owner is passionate about his restaurants and spends time with his customers. I wish the restaurant wasn't so pricey so that I could go every day! :-) amazing amazing amazing. Their happy hour menu has so many rolls for cheap prices! love it.

Very good sushi. Don't know exactly what we order as we always just ask the sushi chef to make us something fresh and yummy. Prices are a little spendy and sometimes the service is lacking on busy nights.

This place is the gold standard for sushi in all of our area. You rarely can find anything as good and I travel a lot. I am so happy to have Mikuni around here. Quality is a hard thing to find in the suburbs John

Mikuni is always a great experience and is a Sacramento sushi legend. The owner, Taro had a great story of what led to his success. Now, the food. Incredible roll, Mac daddy, Dmc, train wreck are my personal favorites. You can't go wrong with any of the sushi, the fish is so fresh and delish. Get the pineapple mojito I simply cannot give 5 stars because I'm from so-cal and our sushi is TO DIE. But so thankful for mikuni, the closest thing I've got.

  • Lindsey C.

Mikuni is the best sushi that you can find. It has remained my favorite sushi restaurant, even in the midst of the openeings of numerous other sushi restaurants in the area. The fish is always fresh and they have plenty of rolls to choose from. Aside from sushi, their chicken, beef and vegetarian dishes are good as well. They have a good selection of bento lunch and dinner boxes that are good choices for non-sushi eaters. I deducted a star because of the wait if you show up during prime dinner hours (7 p.m. - 8 p.m.) It is not out of the usual to have a 45 minute to an hour long wait during this time.

  • Kelley H.

Good atmosphere and food! We went on a busy night and our food was served pretty quickly. I also have to eat gluten free and they have a special menu of gluten free items if you ask for it!! So excited because places like this I can still eat out!!! Our server was nice and brought everything in a timely manner and check in on us a few times as well. Go check it out if you haven't!!

Great sushi! I don't like the sashimi but my husband does and he loves their sashimi. Ill eat the sushi and its great, always fresh fish. The spicy edamame is good too btw.

Love love love Mikuni's! Don't love the prices though..lol BBQ tuna with red sauce is awesome! Benjamin Roll is off the hook! The atmosphere is loud and energetic. I go here as much as my bank account will let me ;)

To Mr. B It's so funny that all you have to do is sit and ponder (probably wait with your tongue hanging out of your mouth loosely) around your computer all day long to write a trite review about your "awful" sushi experience mostly because they didn't wipe your ass. Get a life and go get better sushi! Yes the place sucks, but just because your pee pee isn't as big as the doctor would like it, please leave the nice people out of it. I mean really, are you being that sly by calling yourself Mr. B?? Pathetic and weak! Have fun hunting for a new hipster place to eat you hypocrite!

Way overpriced! No veggies or rice with meal. Ordered chicken teriyaki and got chewy chicken with a piece of romaine lettuce; edamame came out refrigerator cold. Would not go back here or recommend.

I know this place has really good reputation and usually they do a fine job. But I was very disappointed last time i visited here. We ordered 4 rolls but fish wasn't fresh and it didn't taste right. Miso soup came cold. Not to mention I felt sick that night, i dont know if it was from the food. Overall it wasn't a good experience.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT! I can't get enough of their sushi rolls! I have so many favorites, but the must always order for me is the Japanese Mafia and Fair Oaks. The must try appetizer is the flaming shrooms =) You get soup while you're waiting and that's good too. On the other hand, if you're not that into sushi, there's always the boxes (rice, salad, gyoza, teriyaki/chicken). You can never go wrong with any of their boxes --- they're all good! Customer service is great! They've been trained well and if you have any questions about ANYTHING on the menu, they got your back! I also love the candy they give you in the end with your check =) I've been trying to look for that candy everywhere but no luck, so I just gotta keep on coming back to Mikuni! Hahah. The only negative thing is that they don't take reservations so the wait is for days, but once you start eating, all that wait was way worth it and you won't even remember that you were waiting for a while. Although their sushi is pretty expensive, I would gladly pay that much for their sushi rolls because it's FRESH!

Service was great. Long waits on a friday night. You are looking at 30-one hour. Typical sushi, nothing fancy. The price is fancy tho. Whew. Oh and the Udon is bomb. The best I ever had.

I suspect this won't be a popular review, so I'd better start with full disclosure. I chose to go this time because I had an appetizer loaded onto my Mikuni card. Next a little background. Back in the day I ate many times at the original location on Hazel Ave. and was very happy with it. Today I really enjoy Mikuni Kaizen. So my comments here are specifically tied to this branch. The appetizer I had was the Freaky Edamame which I enjoyed. I decided to have a bento box and got the same thing I would get elsewhere which is Chicken Karage and Mixed Tempura. I was very disappointed. The chicken was very dry with little flavor. The batter was dark so I'm assuming the chicken was cooked to long. As for the tempura, the batter was not very good and the shrimp and vegetables were also bland. Let me make a general comment. How one rates a restaurant should be based on a combination of factors, how the restaurant presents itself and how well it does this. So if you are looking for one of the "in" places and specifically enjoy sushi rolls, which Mikuni does well, then I think you'll be happy here. The nigiri sushi is good, but certainly not the best around. If, like myself, you are really interested in outstanding nigiri as well as rolls, or want terrific kitchen food at a more reasonable price, all prepared in an authentic Japanese manner, then I'd suggest you give Kenro's in the Bel Air Center at Cirby and Sunrise a try. While I won't bother coming back here, I will continue to eat at Kaizen where I have never been disappointed. And, if I happen to find myself back in the area of the original Hazel Ave. site, I'd like to try them again and see if they are as good as I remember.

I think I almost went to every Mikuni Restaurant and even the one at Northstar. But this one was pretty good. The restaurant looks standard for all. The menu is similar and the service is still good. I always order the Marilyn Monroll. My favorite. I'll definitely return again.

Just not a huge fan of small overpriced sushi that is so expensive that I an starting to question the price of rice. For the price they charge you'd think yiu would get a little more fish . Overall not as good as it use to be or competion is gaining ground

Yes this is hands down the best sushi I've ever had. My daughter, myself and my two year old grandson had lunch here today. We made a feast of it for sure. The BBQ tuna with the red and white sauce, OMG amazing, both edamames, plain and freaky - fabulous and illegal asparagus to die for. The mafia, Anne, and my daughter ordered more to take home. Simply scrumptious! I would of given Mikunis five stars except our waiter was not on his game, at least for our table. I had to get up and get our own napkins, find another server to bring us sweet & low, plates, etc. I had to ask for wasabi, ginger and little bowls. Really? I still left a decent tip being a former server but it was bordering on ridiculously poor service.

  • Rick S.

Way overrated! If you like sauces and don't care too much about quality fish, this is the place for you! They do a good business though.

  • Jordan A.

This is definitely the best sushi in the area. Service can be good and bad, depending on how busy they are and the server you get, never have service issues at the bar. Sushi is always fresh, sauces are delicious and portions are large. It is expensive compared to other sushi restaurants but we think its worth it.

    (4)
  • Christine D.

The sushi varieties are good, but expensive. Their "$40 for 2" special is good. My husband loves the beer selection. I'd save this place for a special occasion, such as a birthday. Apparently you can spin a prize wheel if it's your birthday.

  • Sun P.

Some restaurants are iconic, some are legendary, Mikuni is both. I have been a regular here since 2005 and have never been disappointed in the food. The Sushi is always fresh, and the wait time is always reasonable even if they are busy. Want some fun? Have at a specialty Maki roll. YUM. Start with Wakame Seaweed Salad and Freaky Edamame (great spicy seasoning) that will wake up your taste buds. Have a warm Sake or a cold Japanese beer. Happy Hour is the BOMB. Check it out. Local favorites are discounted so try a lot. The Puff Daddy is a must have Crab stuffed Shrimp, with a house sauce to die for. It is Tempura battered and deep fried. Hot and delicious. Flaming Shrooms are off the hook good, Crab and cream cheese stuffed mushrooms, with Jalapeno and a special thick, sweet, soy based sauce. So good. Hot, sweet, creamy, amazing. Spicy Tuna Roll with Cucumber is a clean, heat infused rendition of a classic. Very fresh cool tuna makes this one stand out from other local tuna maki where the scraps of tuna are used, often resulting in dark oily poor cuts of tuna disguised just for you. Not here. You get a clean, portion of tuna. Very nice. I love the Michi Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Tuna, Cream Cheese, Masago, in a house sauce that has a citrus edge to its creaminess. Really excellent. Truly all of the rolls are good. Order one or ask the Sushi Chef to make you something unique. They will. Bento boxes are excellent and a good value. The Chicken, Beef and Salmon Teriyaki are all solid choices. Mikuni makes Birthdays a lot of fun. Spin the wheel of fortune and win a prize. I also suggest joining the frequent diner club, the Koki Club. You stack up points for every dollar that you spend then trade those points in for really cool gifts. This is my hometown favorite for sure. Nice work Mikuni.

this place has some great sushi, not the best sushi but its pretty good. Defiently one of the most recommended sushi places to check out in northern California. If your I'm the area you should def check this place out if you like sushi, its kinda difficult to find but just use your GPS and it'll be alright.

I've never had a bad experience here. I'm picky about sushi but I always feel confident to try anything here. They are not traditional purist sushi, but in like what they do. Their sauces suit the American palate. I always leave satisfied. Service has sometimes been less than spectacular but I would say it is good 9/10 times. It is a casual service, not very personal, but that's not why I come here. I recommend to anyone. BBQ albacore is a delicious starter. I also get the spicy dream #1 as a starter.

How can you not love Mikuni? I've read from the Debbie Downers that say the rolls are too covered in sauce and their negative reviews prove they're not from around here.... well welcome to Sacramento... haters are gunna hate but this food is fantastic and here in Sacramento we love our Mikuni! I live for the BBQ Tuna with both sauces. Man that dish is always on my order no matter what. You really can't beat the happy hour because they have such a great hh menu. Freaky edamame is so amazing and all of their food is consistently good.

  • Samantha B.

Oh gosh, what can I say about Mikunis? It's my new favorite restaurant. I was introduced to sushi here and I've been to many places since, and still, nothing compares. It's always packed, but the service is excellent. The rolls are just amazing! Try the Peter Two Roll, it's to die for. Also, fans of the freaky edamame will love the illegal asparagus. I never order appetizers when I go to restaurants, but I always order here. If you've never had the freaky edamame- HAVE IT! You won't regret it. Then try the illegal asparagus, that'll knock your socks off. Only at Mikunis do I order desert as well, the triple mouse is about the best thing ever. Be careful though, with all this amazing food it's waaay easy to go over budget. That's how good it is. I come here every chance I get- and I haven't had a bad roll since! I absolutely adore this place. Do yourself a favor and try it, even if you hit it on a busy night and need to wait for a few minutes. You won't regret it! (And if you're a poor college kid like me or on a budget, try their dinner for two for $40 deal- it's awesome!)

The other reviews were right. The food was really good. I was in a veggie mood & had the cucumber avocado roll with tempura veggies in a bento box. Everything was very good. And FAST the food came really fast & was hot. The tempura was good not over battered & no soggy veggies. The people I was with ordered a pomegranate cocktail thing & it was mighty tasty too. My hubby had the Pepperfin Albacore & it was really good & had a kick. I would totally recommend this place.

If you are a sushi-snob, this is the place to go. This is a high-end sushi place, and I feel the prices reflect the high quality you will receive. The service is friendly, but slow when it's busy. I liked sitting at the bar, watching the sushi chefs slice ingredients paper-thin in the palms of their hands, without cutting themselves. It's quite a talent! Everything we ordered was excellent, fresh, mouthwatering! If I could afford it, I'd be returning a lot more often. -1 star, because it just isn't affordable for everyday eating.

This is hands down my favorite restaurant. The atmosphere is awesome and the sushi chefs are really really friendly. Every thing on the menu is good but I would reccomend the train wreck roll. It is my favorite sushi roll I have ever tried. Great restaurant for large groups, friends, or dates. Definitely worth checking out!

Everytime I go here I am amazed at the wonderful service I receive. The food is consistent and the atomosphere is light and airy. Staff go out of their way to build a relationship with their regulars that will keep you coming back! Buck is the best bartender, confidant and Mikuni friend. Sending some love out to Tyler now too (for remembering my name after meeting me once. Also, came in with friends and I have found a sushi chef who makes his own beauty on a plate. (can't remember his name but he wear thick black glasses) It was a bit pricey, but well worth it. This is the best eatery in California, other than the weather, that I have experienced in my 5 years here, this is the BEST. Go Mikuni - world domination. Food is always great! You guys are the Stars of Sacramento! Denise

I love Mikuni - the one in Arden Fair mall, downtown Sacramento and even at the Fountains! But this one.......it's just not the same quality. Not sure why. This has always been a miss for me, so I just go to the Fountains Mikunis.

  • Chanel N.

So for the 2nd time going to Mikuni, all I can say was that it was awesome. Shige-san (tte yonde iino kana?) was making my delicious nigiri sushi. Tonight's menu was: 1: Maguro 2: Hamachi x2 3: Ikura (salmon roe) with uzura (raw quail egg yolk) on top 4: Ika w/shiso leaf 5: Natto hoso maki 6: Negi hama hoso maki 7: special spicy roll :0) Again, I went to Mikuni by myself, knowing that I would get served a great meal and good service. This place has some seriously fresh sushi. I'm a purist/traditionalist when it comes to sushi and the first things I go for are what's stocked in the bar--not the rolls. I can appreciate the creativity that goes into creating unique rolls and flavors, but there's something just so satisfying about eating fresh, raw, fish. There's something so fresh and vibrant about eating raw fish that I can't get from eating anything else cooked! Most sushi places in Stockton don't serve fish as fresh as this. You can blatantly tell that it is frozen and you can tell that the chef does not know how to cut sashimi/fish when each piece looks like a thin, even square. It's just so disappointing. It is definitely worth the drive from STK to Roseville--you get great food (above all), and awesome service with a smile. As long as you are not personally in any rush to leave, just enjoy your time there, enjoy your sushi/japanese food and take it a good meal! Next time I am bringing my friends. ^_^v Food like this is too good to keep only to myself!!

I've been coming to Mikuni's for over ten years now and I have to say that I have never ever been disappointed by the quality or consistency of their delicious food. I hardly ever look at a menu anymore because I have my favorites, but when I choose to venture out to new items I am always glad I did. The sauce they serve with their sashimi pepperfin is SO GOOD. I love the citrus blossom and the fair oaks roll, freaky edamame....seriously just pick anything, it will be great.

I like it! I've only been to Mikuni's one other time in my life, and I'm pretty sure I had a whack rice bowl. This time around, I came with a Mikuni veteran who knew all the good stuff to order! Atmosphere: It's definitely a casual eatery. My date and I (dressed in a suit, heels, and a dress) turned the heads of those in jeans and rompers. It's pretty loud, so be prepared to use your shouting voice. The restaurant is an upscale sushi spot - the contemporary, eastern-inspired furniture and art really complements the modern swag they were going for. Customer Service: To be honest, it was alright. They weren't bad, they weren't fantastic. I did notice that the hostess(es) looked us up and down upon seating us. I mean, wut. This would be the only thing holding me back from a 5-star review. Food: DELICIOUS! This is what converted me from absolutely despising sashimi, to being tolerant of it. And TUNA of all things; it's helped me realize that not every tuna fish tastes like a can of Starkist with hints of dolphin. We had the black and white, bbq albacore (with red and white sauce), the zig zag roll, and japanese mafia (muh fave!) It's an ample amount of food for two people. I lahk it

This place is pretty good! The menu has a lot to choose from. My boyfriend and I only ordered sushi; Midtown Roll, Tony Two Roll, and Spicy Salmon Roll and they were all delicious, my favorite was the Midtown Roll. I like how the rolls have something different in it. Next time we are in Roseville we'll definitely stop by and try something else.

I don't think Japanese people come to eat here. The service is definitely not up to Japanese standards. I'm wondering if they are actually a Japanese restaurant?! From the Yelp reviews, it seems like the owners are targeting a different customer demographic. We came here several months ago as we were looking for a decent place for a bowl of ramen noodles. The restaurant was completely packed. The server took a really long time to bring the menu and during the whole meal, never came to top off our water glass. The ramen was alright... about the same quality I could make at home. I was expecting something better. If you want better ramen, go across the street to where the Japanese mall is.

I'm usually not a big fan of chain restaurants, especially if it's Asian cuisine, and especially if it's Japanese cuisine! But Mikuni lives up to its popular reputation. Their rolls are fresh and generous. The creative appetizers and entrees their menu offers are delicious. The ambiance is fun too, majority younger folks and so it can get a bit rowdy.

    (4)
  • Justin L.

Mikiuni is consistently great. Their BBQ tuna is better than other sushi restaurants who have tried to mirror their selection. I think it's the sauce. The incredible roll is one of the best rolls you can buy. And as far as miso soups go, this is one of the top places. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because there are other sushi restaurants which have comparable taste and quality for less. And if I'm going to pay Mikuni prices, it needs to be significantly better than the rest. It's top notch sushi for sure, but it's a pricey.

  • Manjit Z.

If I could have Mikuni sushi everyday, I would! Well, not everyday, but close to it. Mikuni is out of the way, and there are a few sushi places in my town, and I've been going to my local places out of convenience. Never again will I do that. We went on a Friday night for dinner, and it was a 20 min wait, but our server was amazing! He was on top of it, I never felt like he was too busy, even though the place was crowded. We got the Marilyn Monroll, Spicy Johnny, and Trainwreck. We also got an appetizer, bbq ahi. First, the bbq ahi, had the bbq flavor dead on, didn't taste like something they precooked, and heated before serving. The rolls, spot on! Having gone to other sushi bars, I realize that when the rice is cooked right and fresh, you can tell the difference. The rice is almost as important as the fish, and let me tell you, the fish didn't disappoint. Everything was great. We had leftovers, I put them in the fridge. Usually when I bring sushi home and refrigerate it, I try one piece the next day and am grossed out. Not the case with my leftovers, I couldn't get enough. I'm considering ordering more the next time I go in just to have a ton of leftovers. Mikuni is the only spot I'm going to for my sushi fix ever again.

3.5 stars, but its too pricey and I don't know why people are willing to wait half an hour, it's not that good, so hence the downgrade to A-OK. Food: Overly dramatic sushi. Quality is good though, but you lose the freshness of the fish when it's deep fried and covered in teriyaki sauce, mayonnaise, red chili sauce and any other colorful sauce the chefs can think of. Ambiance: Traditional sushi restaurant with a modern large layout with plenty of TVs and a noisy crowd. Service: Good service for the price. Price: A few dollars more per dish or roll compared to other restaurants. Overall: Maybe I'm missing out on something, but for whatever reason people choose to go to Mikuni, food, atmosphere or location there are plenty of equivalent if not better sushi restaurants to fulfill those needs.

Love me some Mikuni! If I spend money eating sushi somewhere else, I often think to myself... Why? Why? Why didnt I just go to Mikuni where I know I'd be happy!!!! The BBQ tuna here is the bomb! You won't find better anywhere else! The incredible roll is just that... Incredible! The sushi illustrated lunch combo is delicious and a great value, but if you happen to visit the Downtown location, I recommend the J street combo! I've never had anything that wasn't fresh and delicious!

Their foods are very creative and great, yummy place!!! Mikuni is currently celebrates their 25 Years and have the $40 menu for 2 with one appetizer, one entree, two signature Mikuni rolls and a complimentary dessert. It's totally worth of the price. In addition, all the waitress are very cute and friendly, I'll say it's reasonable to give 5 stars for good foods and services.

We visited here for the first time in 2008- so good. Sushi- bar feel, yet nice restaurant. Finally was able to go back as I returned to the Bay and had to visit the area twice a month. Never ate anywhere else for dinner. I usually stay (hotel) closer to the Fountains location on Galleria, but this one is seriously not much farther and they have a more expansive menu..namely, my chicken katsu. And, they do their chicken katsu with white meat only. And they give a ton of food, plus more than one scoop of rice. And, they always steam my broccoli to perfection. And, you get so much for the low prices they offer. Love Mikuni...miss Mikuni. My stomach just growled writing this review. Damn.

I'd give the food 5 stars. It was good and plentiful. I wasn't crazy about the service. I mean the server was ok..not great but ok. But two of us ordered beef teriyaki and one of us ordered chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki came really fast. Not so fast with the beef teriyaki. My grandson had two choices: Wait for us and have his food get cold or eat his food up and wait for us to get ours and then wait while we ate. I mentioned this to the server and they finally brought the other two dishes. Mikuni is not the only place to do this. Lots of places do the same thing. If a restaurant is really on the ball, they will deal with the situation and make sure the entire party is served at the same time. So we were disappointed that Mikuni didn't have that together. Again, we thought the food itself was really good. And at least the server knew to let us finish before giving us the bill. But just because the food was great doesn't make a five star experience. I mean I'd go back, but I think I'd try to make sure we all ordered the same thing.

Food is good, fairly pricey, I only go here on special occasions. I feel that the food is just as tasty as many other local sushi restaurants, you pay for the somewhat pretentious atmosphere.

A massive selection of sushi rolls and other Japanese foods, appropriate pricing, great ambiance and an excellent staff. It doesn't get better than this!

Who knew that raw fish could be so good? I get grumpy when I think about going there, because they are pricy, but as soon as I sit down and get some wakame salad and grilled tuna down the gullet, that grumpiness fades away as the food melts in my mouth. I haven't had a bad experience there yet. Yes there's a wait, yes it's expensive, but the food is soooo delicious, it's worth these minor inconveniences. Favorite roll....definitely the "Train Wreck". I'm sad when I eat the last piece, and always have to fight the urge to lick the plate. Damn good stuff!

Expect a wait during usual meal times. We sat at the sushi bar for the first time since the wait for a table was 25 mins and I loved it. The chef greeted us immediately and took our order since we knew what we wanted already. Food is always fresh. Love the Ahi Tuna appeztier, spicy Lobster roll, and train wreck. The chef made a kaiser roll for another guest and it looked awesome. Will try that next time.

After reading my previous review, one of the workers there decided to harass me with the following message: "we are glad you got food poisoning. You are obviously a weak woman if you cant handle a little fish. Our food is not contaminated. It is raw fish. if you can't handle sushi....dont come here ps. you said "1st 1 star review ever."------youve given TWO REVIEWS. dumb. ass." Thank you, Brian R. ( yelp.com/user_details?us… ), for letting everyone know what classy service they'll be receiving at your restaurant.

Food was good but the server (Jessica) sucked. Had to ask three times for plates, water & wasabe. I think Mukuni is getting to big for itself.

Been eating here and the one on Hazel for Years. Love the food here, the only thing preventing them from being a 5 star is the cost It's getting out of control. Went Saturday night with the wife... 2 Glasses of Wine and 2 beers...You ready?.. $28.00 Dinner: 4 rolls and 1 Black and White......$73.00 I mean, come on. Taro is a cool dude, but, lets not gauge the customer

My family has been going to Mikuni since it was a small Mom & Pop sushi bar on Hazel. They've grown significantly - and the reason we love it & the reason for their success is simple - awesome fresh fish. After eating at almost every other sushi bar, we remark that we should have just gone to Mikuni. Sure their prices are not the lowest -- but would you expect that from the best in town? Some recommendations - BBQ white tuna with red sauce, salmon skin hand roll, black & white, hang loose roll ... really everything is quite good & innovative. If you sit at the bar, you can easily ask the chef to make modifications or recommendations.

Summary: Pretty good restaurant, but the price is a bit steep compared to more 'traditional' restaurants. This was my 2nd time going to Mikuni, both times on out-of-town trips so the company was footing the bill. If I were to come here by myself, or on a date, I might feel like I wasn't really getting my money's worth. I ordered the small sashimi order. It came and was a bit smaller than I had hoped, but it was good quality sashimi. However, for the price point, location (this isn't SF or LA), and setting (a bit loud), I would have hoped for a bit more in the serving size. Additionally, this place has a huge selection for rolls. If you are a fan of rolls, then you'll find something you like here.. however, most rolls are $10-$15 which is a bit on the pricier side. They are quite good though, definitely not 'traditional' but they are good in their own right. In conclusion, I probably would not come here unless it was more of a special event or a company dinner. Definitely would come here more for the rolls than for actual traditional japanese dinner.

I don't think there has ever been a time where I was upset leaving Mikunis. I have only been to this one and the one at the Galleria but I definitely like this one more! If you want to grab some great tasting sushi and drinks, this is where I would go.

OWNER OF MIKUNI'S - PLEASE READ THIS: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE BRING MIKUNI'S TO SAN JOSE! I promise I will bring all my friends there on a regular basis :-) Whenever I am in Roseville to visit my friends, Mikunis is a MUST DO when I go there. I am not satisfied until I have an order of barbequed tuna and Platter D. Yes, I can eat a whole platter to myself! As many great sushi restaurants as there are in San Jose, there is not one that lives up to Mikunis standards in terms of quality sushi, creative sushi, large portions, super fun environment, economically priced and great service.

This place is absolute garbage / The Mikuni Way as I see it 1. Rice - get good rice, then cook it poorly 2. Fish - get good fish, then assemble sushi poorly 3. Fish 2 - cover everything with sauce so the fish cannot be tasted 4. Chefs - don't hire sushi chefs, just get cheap labor and call them sushi chefs 5. General - Serve loads of Jive Ass Roles to PT Barnum's leftovers 6. Vernacular - Destroy the Japanese language as customers come and go 7. Mission Statement - Over charge for your absolute garbage / ride your prior good name to it's end / laugh ass off I have been to the original Mikuni's, long ago, and the youngish Japanese fellow who started the place was awesome. Great fish prepared by a great sushi chef, and a cool guy. Well, you won't find any of that action at this location. What annoys me the most is that we are depleting our fish resources at an incredible rate, very much so due to the popularity of sushi, and its crap places like this that make it this way. No respect for what they do, no care, no ability, just serving garbage because people will pay too much for it. Okay... finally... got it out of my system... I absolutely detest this place.

Ok, Ive been going to Mikuni's since it was a little dive place in ORANGEVALE. Its not as CHEAP as it was then (and, honestly, I think they gave us a ton free back in the DAY), but its still the bomb. I mean, come on...I live in the bay area, and its still my fav sushi bar? Love it. And they are really nice people, glad to see them so successful. GIVE ME SOME SEA STEAK....YUMMMM!!

I'm not easily impressed with sushi restaurants but this place rocks! For dinner tonight, my companions ordered the Mafia roll and Trainwreck roll which were awesome. I ordered the Chirashi which consists of a variety of raw fish, scallops, octopus, squid, fried egg and shrimp served in a bowl over sushi rice. Everything was super fresh and served in generous portions. Terrific service to boot. Japanese food doesn't get much better than this.

Monday Night Football special in Roseville. $25 buffet, lots of options (including BBQ Tuna) and kept fresh and replenished. Ate more than my money's worth. May not want buffet if you're into more specific rolls. $3 drafts, $10 pitchers & $3 sakis. Football & Sushi, you can't beat that?

I was in for lunch last week. Even during the lunch hour this place is busy! We didn't have to wait for a table though. I really like the way the place is decorated. Very modern and sleek. Our waitress was prompt and somewhat nice. She took our drink order right away. We also ordered some edamame. I wasn't that impressed with the way they prepared them. I like it when they come out warm rather than cold. Just a personal preference. I'm a big fan of rolls and Mikuni's has a long list of them! Lots of fun and inventive ones. I decided to try something different and went with one of the lunch specials. I got the Spicy Combo, which came with 2 pieces of the BBQ white tuna, a spicy tuna roll, and a half order of the Spicy Dream 2. The BBQ tuna was really good. I like the sauce they used on top. The spicy tuna roll was pretty good. Basic but spicy! And the Spicy Dream 2 was definitely different. It was fried on the outside and i'm not too use to that. It was really good. There was a ton of sauce on my plate so i now know what people are talking about when they say they drench everything in sauce. Also the presentation of everything wasn't all i hoped it would be. We finished off our meals with some Mango mochi. I really love that stuff! So yummy! Overall I had a nice experience. The food was good, fresh and came out really fast. I think Mikuni's is a little over rated but im still a fan and will definitely go again!

Mikuni is by far my absolute favorite sushi restaurant! Who cares about space and decor when the food is this good?! My favorites: Japanese Mafia & Trainwreck! And, the two for $40 dinners are a great deal for date night!

the first time we were here, both the food and the service was good. the second time we were here, both the food and the service was not good. we're not coming back. the food tasted like food from a freezer in a grocery store. maybe their sushi is better?

BY far the BEST sushi/japanese restaurant I have ever been to. My family and I go to Mikuni every Sunday! It is amazing. My whole family eats sushi, except me. So, from what they say it is the best and freshest sushi they have had. And the other types of food like boxes and appetizers, I would have to say it is outstanding. Love love love the Sesame Chicken. And on your birthday or within 2 days of your birthday, you get to spin this wheel that you can win prizes on. Great prizes! A great place to go for a date or with the family. They have tvs and a sushi bar, and a real bar! :) Extremely fun and enjoyable. A definate must go place!

So disappointed!! We've been here a lot, but the service has just gone down hill. Our waiter/server never said, "hello, welcome" anything in fact he didn't even make eye contact or smile the whole time. My husband and I are not high maintenance, we just want to get our grub and drink on, but come on! Didn't ask if we wanted water, didn't pour our first beer(yea we got a pitcher), didn't tell us what our different rolls were, kinda just plunked our dishes on our table. It was barely 6:00 pm on a Friday. It wasn't that busy. Whatever, I'm voting with my cash, bu-bye Mikuni.

We've been here before and absolutely loved it! This time we came in because of their $40 dinner for 2 special. It includes an appetizer, 1 entree, 2 rolls, and a dessert. The flavors are so savory and fresh! There was a little lag time between asking the server for something and finally receiving it but, the atmosphere is relaxed and casual. Can't wait to go back!

The best sushi in the region. Period. Large menu, sure to please everyone. I have been approximately 20 times and only once had bad service. Seating is a bit cramped, best times to go are for an early lunch before 12 and for an early dinner before 6. Long wait times on busy nights, I always try to go on a Monday or Tuesday night when its not so packed. One of the more higher priced places in the region, but you are paying for quality.

This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant in the Sacramento area! I absolutely love Mikuni. My parents and I started going here when they first opened in Roseville and continue to frequent this restaurant often. I have tried many of their rolls and sashimi and have come to find my favorites. These include: *Peter 2 Roll - spicy tuna, tempura, crab inside with slices of seared tuna covered with their special house sauce *BBQ White Tuna with Red Sauce - a plateful of seared tuna with red sauce - great with a bowl of steamed rice *Sashimi - always fresh *Their bento box lunch specials have generous portions - their tempura is awesome! If you're ever up in Roseville or even at their locations around the Sacramento area, you won't be disappointed! Mikuni gets my two thumbs up!

Fabulous Sushi. They just opened up one in the Palms. I love this place, everything is so freshhhhhh and so delicious. Everyone comes here, you always see all the local celebs like players from the Kings and 49ers here If you are in Sacramento and willing to spend a few extra dollars, make sure you COME HERE!

Good for what it is. Like the midtown Mikuni, it is "Americanized" sushi. Rolls oversized, sauces dominate most rolls and it is curious the one review about the "Freshest" fish being if you sit at the bar. By FDA regulations, all fish for sushi is required to be frozen at -4 a min. of 7 days or flash frozen at -31 for 15 hours to kill parasites, with the exception of tuna. So none of us is really eating "Fresh" fish. That being said, it is a nice operation, if a bit chain-like in atmosphere. The service has always been good when I have visited and the flavors, while not authentic are good. It is a good start for those who otherwise may not be sure about eating sushi or for kids who are taking a shot at sushi. But make no mistake, this is not authentic sushi as you will find at traditional sushi houses. Still good, just is what it is!

  • Lisa C.

I can think of 3 other sushi places in Sacramento/Roseville that are cheaper and taste better. The service is slow and the place is LOUD! The room to the right where more tables were added, was an obvious after thought. It's were all the over-flow goes when they get really busy... And the service reflects just that. Can't stand this place

    (2)
  • Peggy R.

Okay the sushi is not bad but the other items need to be avoided. The Chirashi had sushi cut in very large pieces which is a sign that not a true sushi chef is working there. Everyone seems to love the rolls but I was disappointed with some fundamentals. Like white rice that is hard and green tea with chlorinated water (is there water rationing in Roseville?). Agedashidofu was tempura style...again not a sign of a true japanese chef. The tempura vegetables were not cut in smaller sizes that the quality of deep frying showed. For example half a zuchini instead of thinner slices or serving 1/2 of a whole onion...not even onion rings. Sorry, don't think I am going back.

If you don't like waiting, get here before 6pm for dinner. Otherwise, expect at least a 10 min wait. Once seated, the service is excellent. Plus, where we were sitting, you can look up at a mirror to watch the sushi chef from above preparing the specialty rolls. This place is known for their crazy array of rolls on their menu. I asked the waiter what they are popular for. He tells me: incredible, tommy & train wreck. We decided to order: incredible (mainly spicy tuna, deep fried shrimp, avocado and other stuff with an amazing spicy topping), train wreck (spicy tuna, deep fried shrimp, topped with chopped eel ans sauce), and sacramento roll (deep fried calif. roll w/ ponzu sauce). I must say, All three of those rolls were great! Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to order any of their sushi, which is a shame. It just gives me an excuse to go back, right?

  • Jenae A.

The best agedashi tofu around! Hands down. I don't care for sea food a whole lot and I can find a plethora of items on the menu that don't have seafood in them. I love the bento boxes and the tempura. My hubby absolutely loves the sushi, his favorites are the Train Wreck, the Santa Claus and the Benjamin rolls. Always a great atmosphere. The happy hour is great; the hubby and I can go and pig out on our favorite appetizers and small items and walk out with our bill being around $25.

Before my friends and I went snowboarding this past Sunday, we all looked forward to having some Mikuni's, at the new location in Northstar's Village, after a long day on the slopes. Just thinking about it on the car ride up made my lips wet ;0)! But because it was such a cluster-F**k that day, we ended up at Sugar Bowl instead. No pities needed because we ended up eating at this location, which is where this neverending love for Mikuni had began (Thanks to Ed C.)! No wait at all; luck was on our side. I LOVE THIS PLACE! Need I say more??? Ok...I will ;0) Best sushi ever...you don't just find the usual Philadelphia roll or the 7pc sashimi combo. You find yourself having a tongue orgasm instead...Kid you not! And it's because of the many unique and creative choices of sushi they have on their menu, as well as their signature sauces. I can't sum up everything in a nutshell for you, so just go & get a taste of it already!!! They only allow reservations for parties of 6+ and would only seat you when the entire party is present, so make sure you round up your crew together wisely. Recommenations: Citrus Blossom, Tommy Roll, Japanese Mafia, Zig Zag Hand Roll, Black & White, Puff Daddy Roll...the list goes on and on! Oh yeah, not to mention...the silly pictures of the owner on the wall ;0)

The problem with Mikuni begins with the long wait time to be seated and ends with the slow service. Honestly, the price you pay for the sushi really isn't worth it. There are many other places in Sacramento that do a comparable job at almost half the price.

Being from San Francisco, I was totally shocked to find such delicious sushi in Roseville. I was also surprised that a chain sushi restaurant would be of such quality (although the ambiance felt pretty chain-like). But Mikuni is now at the top of my list for best Japanese cuisine. Things you must try: - oyster shots: they were spicy and f-ing fantastic (although I passed on the raw quail egg - I don't drink raw eggs) - sample plate of sashimi: nice variety of really fresh fish - 911 roll: if you like spicy rolls this is definitely for you I wish we had sat at the bar because the chefs seemed to be enjoying themselves and had great customer service, but when I dropped a chopstick and asked our server for new ones, he never brought them. I then asked another server and she never brought them. I had to go to another table and steal a set. Shitttaaay service.

I was told that Mikuni was "the" sushi place around Sacramento, especially in Roseville. So, after our first and only visit, my husband and I were crying and plotting a return to the good sushi life of LA. The chef's choice was average... the tuna was super red (aka. not fresh) and the other selections were "ok" but definitely nothing to rave about. I made the mistake of thinking that their rolls would be better, but when the krab was still in its log form in my roll, I realized that I was better off preparing my sushi at home. If this was a "cheap" sushi spot, we'd return to eat on our poor days, but since the bill was too high for the standard of service, we won't be back.

I have been to Mikuni a million times and have never left unsatisfied! The fish is always fresh, they recently got their liquor license and make a mean cocktail! (Try the Kuni-Hootie, amazing!!!) The BBQ tuna, Peter 2, Mikey hand roll, sunamono & miso are 5 star!!! Try the Mochi ice cream, it's delicious! They service is great. The only downfall is they do not take reservations so if you even start to feel hungry go ASAP because you could be waiting for over an hour! (Especially on Friday and Saturday nights.) They have a great new happy hour menu and Taro is a great guy! LOVE this place and will never get tired of the food, service & atmosphere!!!

On business in Roseville and wanted some Sushi. The yelp reviews seemed to indicate this was a good spot - for Roseville. I must say I was a bit surprised to see so many Sushi places in Roseville? Thank goodness for cryo-packs and refrigerated delivery trucks! When I arrived, I was also a bit taken aback as to how crowded and loud this place was. Funny thing, one of the sushi chefs mentioned it was an off night. I guess, Roseville likes it's sushi?! This place reminds me of a modern twenty something bar - meets sushi; dare I say style and ambiance over substance? First off, the menu was overwhelming. I can't even count how many rolls they have. For me, I don't think this is a good thing. I mean I'm one for choices but this just seems over the top... I went all sushi and tried; 1 California Roll, 1 Maguro, 1 Sake (fresh), 2 Hamachi. Since I stuck to the sushi - I can't truly share my experience from the kitchen and wait staff. My service rating is just based upon getting my sushi and refills on iced tea. Although for me, this place had a lot going against it (too loud, too crowded, too many rolls on the menu) the quality of the fish was good. The Sake and Hamachi were very good. So, in good faith I'm giving Mikuni an overall 4. Value:4 Service: 3.5 Fish: 4 Ambiance:3.5 If I were in college or a twenty something, I'm sure I'd give this place a 5. However, based upon my travels and the many Japanese & Sushi restaurants I've eaten at, for me, Mikuni is a solid 4. I'd go back.

Good place to eat so you can say you ate there. With so many other sushi restuants popin up in our area, I find it hard to get out to Mikuni. I give my respect to Mikuni for what they have done for the Greater Sacramento area but I do believe some of the love is gone. This is evident in their dishes. I guess that is what happends when you get to be a giant in your field or in this case, a big fish in a small pond. Me and my party had a few rolls and one of the Special Dream or Dream Specials, can't remember the name exactly but I could tell that the red tuna was from a package due to the bright pink sorta flouresnt look to it. Didn't look like a fresh 15-20 lb red tuna slab I'm used to at my local sushi joint which is usually more deaper red. When we ate the rolls, the flavor that stood out the most was the mayo in their crab salad. I know what all the other ingredients should taste like i.e unagi, shrimp temp, soft shell crab and sumeshi but couldn't get past the mayo. One things for sure, they print money in this place so, I can't hate on that!

  • Andee V.

I like this Mikuni as much as I like the one downtown but for completely different reasons. The Roseville location is a lot more quiet and perfect for a family dinner or dinner out with friends. The restaurant is not all about the bar and scene as is the one in Sacramento. It's good for a nice, chill night out. I also like that this one is closer to my house! The sushi selections are the same, and taste great. Being so close to the movies, this is a great spot to get a bite to eat right before.

  • Crystal R.

This was the first Mikuni's restaurant I had ever been to... I've been going there for for the past 5 or 6 years. I do love the atmosphere... some what more modernized then their counterpart Taros (not so flashy) and the Sushi Chefs are always aware of customers coming in and out even when it's a crowded mess. Friday and Saturday nights - just not the place to be if you want to wait around for a dinner. Wait times can last up to an hour. If I'm REALLY hungry I'm sure as hell not waiting for an hour. Yes, the sushi is way more fancy or Americanized (I read that word somewhere within another Yelper's review), but the taste and flavors are good. I really like the boat. Now THAT is way more authentic sushi, not so many fancy-shmancy items and that's what I like. They have a variety of sushi and sashimi and it comes in a super cute wooden boat! For a group of people it's worth the money. I think last time it was around $60 for the smaller boat and $95 for the larger. Service is "eh". I've had definite hits and misses. Some people are super attentive and others are just "eh". I think it's because I see so many new faces every time I've been there so maybe longevity isn't a thing for servers at Mikuni? I derno.. I'm just putting it out there... So I'm giving this place 3 stars because I'm in love with another sushi place in Sacramento, but if you're in the Roseville area check it out during lunch or a weekday dinner. You will be able to enjoy the food and atmosphere more.

Okay, I don't eat Sushi or any seafood/fish for that matter, but did go here with a large group of friends for an evening out. We waited for over an hour to get a table, it was super busy! Once seated it took quite some time for the waitress to come over and take our drink order. Once she did it was all wrong. The drinks came out wrong. (except for the bottles of hot Saki my friends were drinking like water) and it took a long time for our food order to be taken. I ordered Sesame Chicken and it was damn good! Golden fried and crispy. Very very tasty!!! Would I go again? You bet. It was a fun atmosphere, and everybody enjoyed themselves. I can excuse slow service as they were very very busy.

a friend recommended this chain, so we went to check it out.. NOT good, the sushi rice was cold and hard. The fish was old and tasted and smelled bad. Would not return. Can not believe so many locals like this place.. they must have not tried GOOD sushi. We have lived all over the USA, and have tried hundreds of sushi places.. this one would be near the bottom of the list.

When I started asking around for good sushi places in Roseville everyone, seriously everyone I asked, had Mikuni's on their list. I finally checked it out the other day and it was FABULOUS! I've just started being more adventurous when it comes to what I'll eat at a sushi place and Mikuni's was a good place to try some stuff out. I usually only eat rolls but here I didn't have any rolls. Although there were a ton of rolls on their menu that looked good I opted for shashimi instead. We ordered a mixed plate of shashimi and it came with red tuna, white tuna, yellow tail, salmon and octopus. I can honestly say that Mikuni's set the bar pretty high for any other sushi places I go have shashimi at now! Their fish was so fresh and so freaking good; the salmon was the best I have ever had. Maybe I'm not the best judge since I'm new to eating shashimi and fish in general, but apparently all the people who recommended this place to me weren't wrong. I usually don't eat fish unless it's rolled up, maybe deep fried and surrounded by some avocado and has some type of sauce on it. I'm so glad I came to this place to try some new things for the first time. They have this BBQ tuna on the appetizer menu that is to die for!!! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about that BBQ tuna and their salmon. The place was pretty busy for a Tuesday night but we never waited long for any of our food. I definitely see many more trips to Mikuni's in my future.

Still the best sushi around always fresh and good. The portions have shrunk lately but not the prices so little pricey and the service is not as good or attentive as a few years ago but best sushi place for lunch

Everything was excellent. Place was packed, lots of people waiting. We still were seated within 15 minutes and were off to our movie next door in no time. As other reviews say...try the BBQ tuna, it's melt in your mouth goodness.

I drove in circles for a full hour trying to find this Mikuni's location. Maybe it wasn't the restaurant's fault, but the few times I called them and asked for help finding my way they gave me terribly wrong directions. I was meeting up with a guy I'd only met once before for a first date of sorts so my being late was semi-awkward. Add to it that it was also a big work dinner for him and everyone assumed we were dating, and that ups the awkward level to another dimension. Given that my stress level was insanely high upon entering the restaurant things were surprisingly mellow. The sushi here is nothing close to traditional, but it is fun. Their are about a hundred rolls, so you'd have to be a pretty difficult person not to find something you like. And fun plates of food that you get to pass around a table lend to lively conversation, so that made for a good group meal. I would never go to this particular Mikuni location on my own, but it wasn't terrible, all things considered.

Ate here on the company dime....so food ALWAYS tastes good when it's company-subsidized... :) Anyhow---lots of style here---our group mostly ate rolls, which to me, is not a way to judge the quality of fish (as nigiri is), but all in all, the stuff was really, really good. Place is nice and the ambience is sophisticated hipness. I'd go again MAYBE if I was paying, FOR SURE if the company paid.

This a great spot. Mikuni's is notorious in the Sac area for good sushi. There is a reason. Fresh, creative menu with any type of sushi you like. Try the BBQ Tuna ap.

Great for unique rolls, lots of combinations to choose from. Absolutely LOVE the BBQ White Tuna--try both sauces, I can't choose between them! Prices add up fast, so use caution when ordering. Try to arrive early or late to avoid the lunch crowd.

Dam the food was good last time I was there !! Love the naming structure they have - Couldn't pass up that Marlyn Mon-Roll !! Excellent rolls.. the only problem I have is once you eat at this one the other Mikuni's don't match up !!

Great Sushi spot. I think their fish quality is excellent. Business lunch is pretty busy so expect to wait 10-15 minutes during the work week. I also held a group dinner there for work. We had a private room and the service was very good. It was a little expensive, but good value for the price.

My wife and I went here for an early dinner recently. We had not gone in a while because we have a Japanese restaurant we like that is closer to our house. We were greeted and seated quickly. I ordered the calamari and vegetable tempura appetizers. I had the sashimi and nigiri combo. My wife ordered the beef teriyaki. My sashimi and nigiri combo came out first. It was beautiful with pieces of tuna, yellowtail, hamachi, salmon and ebi. The fish smelled like the sea and was so fresh that it melted in my mouth. The tempura was hot and crisp, but somewhat bland. They needed some salt and a better sauce than the simple tempura sauce that they serve. The tempura was otherwise very well done. My wife's beef teriyaki was tender and flavorful. We'd go back more often, if only we didn't have to drive across town.

i love sushi...and i have tired every single place...they are the best without a doubt... the first time i went there i had train wreck and one more... they served soap...which was awesome... also customer service was great... i couldnt get what the wheel was for... quantity verses the price was great... love it... i wish they had a bigger place for more people so no one had to wait

Much better parking situation than the one on Hazel or in midtown. Got seated fairly fast for a Friday night. I love the flaming shrooms and I think I had the Ultimate? and a Trainwreck rolls, both were good.

Before I left I did review the yelp comments and noted the reviewer who pointed out the difference between California Sushi and Traditional Sushi. That helped set my expecation. From a presentation standpoint things did loook good. They also had 8 sushi chiefs so the rolls were done quickly. I was disappointed that I couldn't order sashimi. Only as an appetizer. Which I did and it was low quality - not fresh, not tasty. The roll selection was also poor if you are looking for anything that doesn't include fried shrimp, eel or crab. I ordered one of the exotic rolls called 1822. The worning of it being hot is true. Couldn't eat more than 3 pieces (my fault for ordering). I ordered a spicy salmon roll which threw the waitress off because they had a spicy tuna roll but no spicy salmon roll on the menu. Finally the service - worse I've seen in a long time.

This is my favorite place for sushi, hands down. Dishes are creative and tasty. My favorite is Pimp My Roll....best sushi roll you will ever eat! I have to have one at least once a week. Fish is always fresh, and service, for the most part is consistent.

This place gives me a headache every time I go but it's well worth it. Delicious sushi and some good entrees for people who are a bit squeamish about eating raw fish. I absolutely adore the oyster shooters here. They're the best around.

All I can say. Overpriced. Noisy. And the worst sushi out there. Take your money somewhere else. My wife loves the place. So I've been dragged here for a third time. And guess what it's still horrible.

i had Mikuni's for the first time at Northstar and loved it. so on our way back from Reno, we stopped by Roseville to have my fix before we head back to San Jose - where there's no Mikuni's anywhere around here - and still YUMMY for the second time in one weekend. a large selection of the differents hand rolls. sushi and nonsushi stuff so everyone who comes here will enjoy. they have this sauce on some of the rolls - sort of mustard - gives it all a creamy and kick of spice. dont forget the miso soup, their salad and sake :) abundant parking spaces so you will not have a problem trying this place out.

  • dale d.

Loud and noisy. This place is about itself and not about the customer. The food is average, the hot food not even that. I found myself there because my party choose it - I have been before and find many other Japanese restaurants better suited to good service and good food and less suited to self promotion and making themselves some kind of ego boosting event for those who don't know any better.

One of the top sushi places I have eaten at if you can handle dodging suburban SUV's plowing you over in the parking lot. I guess it is worth risking your life over.

I have been eating at Mikunis since day one and have seen their expansions and changes. Yes it is now a chain. Yes this is apparent. No it isn't traditonal Japanese. I would call it Japanese fusion. Yes many roll are smothered in sauce. If you don't like that ask for no sauce or sauce on the side. I don't really enjoy deep fried food. If you don't want a deep fried prawn in the middle of your roll ask for scallop or ebi...They will do whatever you want. The pure volume of product they put out on a daily basis indicates to me freshness isn't going to be an issue. For us it has never been an issue. We love it. It is kid friendly and fast. The fish is fresh, it can be whatever you want it to be. Just know how to order. Yes I think they did just raise the price on their rolls but they don't charge for miso and they never charge us for the warm tofu they bring the babies...so for me it is a wash.

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever visited. The serivce sometimes leaves a bit to be desired, but the selection and quality of the food more than makes up for it. My favorites here are (in this order)... 1) BBQ Tuna AP, 2) VolcanoScallops and 3) almost any roll on the menu. If you are anywhere near Roseville, this restaurant is an absolute must. Be sure to make reservations as it is always busy during lunch and dinner.

About as innovative as a sushi restaurant can get. Their menu offers the gamut and you won't be disappointed (if you are, go back to blandville). They get 4 stars because they used to have a really tasty amber ale but no longer. I *highly* recommend taking one of their sushi making courses. Yummy and fun.

I'ge been gooing to mikuni for years, and I will continue to do so. Service is always great, the food is tasty and the fish is the freshest around. I love the hamachi Kama appetizer; it is the collar of the fish cooked to perfection and is seriously so delicious. I'm also a fan of the sashimi dishes. The rolls are good, but not the standouts for me.

Excited and hoping this place can become my regular stop after snowboarding trip. They told us 1hr 15min wait for party of six. Initially, I thought since this place is highly rated and a long wait is just fair, especially on sat night. After more than an hour wait, I felt there was only us in the waiting lobby. I went over to check the list and saw 20 names (rough estimate) AFTER me have been crossed out. They quickly told me our table was being set. Couldn't quite believe a table for a party of six was so hard to get ready. Maybe the food is delicious, but, the feeling of being treated unfairly spoiled it. Definitely won't be back.

Dude, this place is awesome. Its what you call "rock 'n roll" sushi (termed by one of my coworkers). Its pretty modernized setting with unique tasting sushi. Before here, I did not like sushi with raw fish, but after coming here, man! - they're good! If you have time, you should try the "Black and White" appetizer or the seared tuna appetizer. The menu is quite pricey, but its definelty worth it. If you also have a chance, the Mikuni's in downtown Sacramento is also just as savory.

We like Mikuni's food, but find that it is more pricey than other local sushi venues. We eat there with out of town guests, but pick more local, and more affordable restaurants for weekday sushi.

Chris and I are huge fans of sushi and we always find ourselves very happy with the quality of fish at Mikuni. Went for lunch on a recent Sunday. A nice waiter noticed our 22-month old and brought him a bowl of miso soup (kid-temperature) with a load of tofu. Not to mention a pair of "beginner chopsticks" (tied together at the top with rubber band and a rolled up piece of paper). Our complimentary starter was also miso soup. Last time we were given edamame. The special chirashi was disappointingly small--imagine our dismay if we had ordered a regular chirashi. But the fish was impressively fresh as usual. A delightful variety of fish--squid sprinkled with sturgeon caviar, salmon, yellowtail, snapper, tuna, octopus. Tamago, too. We ordered an unagi roll and substituted the cucumber for avocado (yum!) at no extra charge. Mikuni continues to be a great place to cure our sushi cravings.

Mikuni is hands down the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to and I am perfectly happy never to go looking for a better one. I do eat at other sushi places (and trust me I've been to a ton) but none even compare. The sauces are amazing and I don't really even care how much it costs. Good rolls: Japanese Mafia, Incredible, Marilyn Manroll, Spicy Dream #1 with Red Tuna, and the Michi Roll. And they have some good appatizers as well the freaky edamame and the flaming shrooms are excellent. Oh and the special scallops are amazing as well. The service is almost always great and even if they have a bad day who cares, the food is so good I don't even notice. Bottom line, if you like sushi, hell even if you don't...(I've seen this restaurant turn many a sceptic in to sushi addicts) GIVE MIKUNI A TRY! I would eat there everyday if I could afford it:)

One of the best around. The Incredible roll more than lives up to it's name. From the freshness of the fish, to the scrumptious sauces that they drizzle over the top, this is a must if you are a sushi lover!

Yum-O.. This place is good... I recently went here for my friends brothers birthday dinner... Lots of vegetarian selection which I love... and soy paper which is a sushi must for me... I had sunomono which my portion alone must have consisted of 3 full cucumbers.... My friend who had never had sunomono loved it..... I also had an avocado roll wrapped in soy paper and a tempura roll, that was really yummy, but had egg on it, that was not advertised in the menu... After scrapping the egg off the top which was very easy... it was delicious.... They serve yummy jolly-rancher like candies at the end of the meal in pineapple and melon.... Sooo Tasty!

Mikuni is great, my husband and I have been there several times. We always get a "box" and a lot of sashimi! I've never been to the downtown one, it's probably closer to where we live now in Natomas..we were in Auburn before. We almost alway went there before or after the movies!

this is my favorite place for sushi :) always fresh, a relaxed environment, and my favorite (pepperfin and seared albacore tuna) never disappoint!!! the reason for four stars, is that usually with a larger group (over 6), the service seems less attentive. drinks are usually forgotten and some dishes as well. we will always come back here, but usually in smaller groups for this reason! the sushi is the best around, so do make it a point to stop in and try!!!

I love MIKUNI's! I've always been a fan. I never ate sashimi until i came to mikuni! They are known for their sea steak, bbq white tuna (red or white sauce equally good), and other rolls. I love their Carmichael roll. Honestly i love all their stuff... except the conventional stuff you would find at other Japanese restaurants, it's just too boring to eat it when you could try so many other better rolls. If you're in a big group order a boat which will help with costs, and it's impressive to have it on your table. Honestly i would have to say that Mikuni is the best Japanese restaurant in all of California! I've been to a lot of Japanese restaurants all over California, and no one comes close to Mikuni!

I was recommended this restaurant and found it to be very yummy. The menu was extensive and varied, although I found the sushi descriptions a little hard to read. I ordered the James Dean roll (avacado, scallops, eel, shrimp tempura, roe), which I found to be absolutely delicious, and the Rainbow Roll, which I found to be not as delicious. I think it was the different taste of the crab they used. I wasn't used to it and found it vaguely slimy. The fish on top was quite tasty, though. The restaurant was already busy at only 5pm, and quickly filled up. It was loud and bustling and every time someone entered the restaurant, a resounding cheer from the chefs occurred. I actually did not like this part, as I found it distracting, but the atmosphere is loud enough anyway that you can ignore it. The reason I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 was the fact that getting service from the waitress was next to impossible and she wasn't very friendly when I finally did. I can imagine she was busy, but she managed to complete everything in a timely manner to the woman sitting next to me. PROS: Great sushi, friendly chefs, extensive menu. CONS: Not-as-great service.

When I called to ask for directions, I was passed around to 4 different people before I got someone who could help me...and she gave me incorrect directions. After being lost for 15 mins, I found the place by sheer luck. By that point, I was hesitant to give them my business because I felt that they didn't really care to have it. That's why they lost a star. Once inside, my perspective switched. It was crowded, but we were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly, helpful (we had 2 kids with us), and quick. As for the food, I would give 5 stars. It was stellar! Beautiful presentation and SO very good! I got the best chicken terriyaki I have ever had to share with my husband. We also shared the Fair Oaks roll, Hot Tuna 911 and one other roll (I forget the name). The kids got little Bento Boxes. They loved being able to choose what went into them. Overall, a fun place with great food and nice waitstaff. But they need to get some different people in there to answer phones!!

Best sushi in the Sacramento valley, period. I've been going to Mikuni for the past ten years. Never once have I had a bad experience at any of their locations. Highly recommended!

The moment I fell in love with sushi was the moment I first tasted a Fair Oaks roll at Mikuni's. This isn't the cheapest place around, but the food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is great too. Great place for a date or birthday dinner. The seared ahi tuna is heavenly. I don't even live in this area anymore, but every time I come back I have to eat at Mikuni's.

Mikuni use to be this fair priced local sushi restaurant worth the drive for in Fair Oaks only. Now it's an empire. This is the grand daddy of crazy sauce covered sushi rolls and what all sushi restaurants in the area are compared to. Corporate advertising has taken over. From the menu to the sushi chef's they're advertising for someone. The chef's outfits are starting to look like NASCAR drivers uniforms. Pretty soon sushi rolls will start resembling corporate logos. If you want to people watch the "California roll is sushi" eating crowd this is the place. But even if traditional sushi is more your flare, Mikuni's remains top notch. You're bound to find something on the menu to appease your fancy.

  • Jen R.

When we come "home" to the Sacramento area, we always stop at Mikuni's. It is always busy and a bit loud but we've always had prompt, friendly service. The rolls are fresh and there is quiet the variety. The best I've tried was the Puff Daddy (I couldn't find it on the menu the last time we went) - mouth watering! We'll be back on our next visit.

  • Lynn J.

I got turned on to this place through a work lunch a few years ago and went back for dinner that night with my kids. My first visit to Mikuni was only the second time I had tried sushi, we had a large group and got to sample so much from nigiri, specialty rolls and the seared fish-only offerings. Though I visit a lot of sushi places now, Mikuni is still my favorite. I'm not that adventurous but love maguro and hamachi as sashimi and most rolls, BMW and the Marilyn Monroll are our family favorites. Fish is always fresh tasting and cool, I dont know if its more traditional to eat room temp raw fish but I dont like it served that way. When I sit at the bar the sushi chefs are always friendly and I enjoy creating something new based on my cravings and their creative flair! Nowadays I mostly save Mikuni for special occasions these days due to crowds and long waits.

OK, don't think of Mikuni as Japanese food and you will love it. The place has great rolls, extremely tasty. Is it traditional Japanese? Forget about that notion, it is as american as apple pie...but apple pie is good and so is Mikuni. Get the "Incredible Roll" as suggested by the name it is incredible. You are not going to find the best nigiri here, they specialize in very dressed up and sometimes cooked rolls...but it is just plain good.

pretty big rolls. a little pricey. big selection. SO thought rice was good (she knows a lot better than I do!). I liked it ok and so did SO. Not sure why so many reviews are so negative. Kind of crowded. Somewhat of a local institution, I'd say. Haven't been for quite a while, but used to go all the time a few years ago when I lived up this way. I would say it's good and certainly not as terrible as some of the other reviews say.

Very popular, often crowded mikuni has lots going for it. Long waits late in the week and weekends. It isn't cheap either. Go on your birthday and you get to spin the wheel for a prize, including bag of rice, soy sauce, gift certificate and even kiss your favorite sushi chef. A common order for me: zig zag hand roll, bbq white tuna, 99 roll, a tall asahi dry or house pale ale. Uncommon order includes one or two of: flaming shrooms, sashimi plate, "pasta salad" which includes no pasta, cucumber salad, japanese mafia roll or if Jose makes the roll, a mexican mafia roll. If I go in a group we might get a boat. Fun! If you sit at the bar, you get to watch the sushi chefs (all men, mostly hispanic) make the food. Most people at the bar are pretty social and it feels like a big party. The place is loud, and some of the sushi chefs are louder still in their greetings. Everyone gets greeted. So maybe a busy night is not the best night for long deep conversation. I've never gotten sushi quite as flavorful anywhere else. Because they are so good, they are busy and loud. This is their only fault. Service has been excellent to so-so, depending on the crowd. I take adventurous out-of-towners here. They have takeout, but it isn't as good as eating there. They also have a sushi class were you can learn to make your own. I don't know where you would get fish that good though. They used to have a paper frequent diner card they would stamp but moved to a plastic frequent diner club. Parking is a problem. I park in the lot behind and walk, never attempting to get a door spot on a weekend.

The wife and i really like eating here. Some might say it's a bit pricy but we believe it's well worth it. We've tried BBQ albacore at many sushi places around the area and mikuni's by far is the best. The peter 2 roll is another favorite that we always get.

What I like about this place is the Sushi chefs. I was there one day and was trying a lot of different things. The Chef realized what I liked and offered me a Cod Roe hand roll. Not on the menu, but it was awesome. The Oysters on the half shell with uni and quail eggs is great. Long wait for a table, plus I don't want to drive to Roseville. Fish is of great quality. Sit at the sushi bar if you can. Much better experience.

  • Tim L.

The food here is good. They have a very good variety. If you look real close it's all the same stuff just in different combinations but this could be a good thing because you're more likely to find just the right dish for you. The service is good during non peak times but lacking when they are busy. I guess this should be somewhat expected. It's always noisy, even when the place is not even half full. For some reason people seem to speak loudly even though they don't need to. This place is not that exciting.... The prices are a little on the high side for what you get. I like the one in Fair Oaks better. I would actually give them 3 1/2 stars.

Absolutely my favorite restaurant of all time. Sure, it was one of the first sushi places I ever went to. Sure, it had the chance to disappoint me time and time again with slightly long waits to get in and average-range sushi prices. The plain and simple fact: It just doesn't matter. The food is amazing enough to outweigh all of that and still give you change with a smile on its face. The Citrus Blossom is pricey, but one of the best things they have. Other amazing things: the Out of Control, the Hang Loose, and the 99 Roll.

I always ordere Chirashi when We go to Mikuni, and always leaveat leasst two piece at the end due to being too fishy. always thought I was not sophisticated enough and will get used to it one of these days. Earlier this year, went to visit a relative in another state, they own a small japanese grocery with a sushi bar I had two chirashi bowls. after talking to their sushi chef I just have two suggestions for Mikunis: Please get better sushi chefs and simpler sushi instead of all those sauces drenching the fish

what can i say about this mikunis? ill keep this one short. service was, eh, ok, sushi was good, and atmosphere was ok. you can tell by my shortness that i didn't have a good time here. i mean the food was good, don't get me wrong, but it we were seated next to the stinkin restrooms and boy were they grimey. . i would expect that in san fran but definitely not in roseville. at least the waitresses were cuties. if you want a better time, go to the one in fair oaks! they have a fat bar! that's just my opinion! catch me in that one!

This Place used to be really good, but we went last week and were highly disappointed. We actually sat at the Sushi Bar and Im glad we did or I wouldnt have noticed all the things that are important to a restuarant....cleanliness for one. The sushi that sat in the refrigerators (which were filthy) looked days old and even a can of fake crab sat there in our faces dryed out. I dont know about other people but when I go to a shushi place I want the real thing, especially with their prices. The walls have grime on them and looked like they havent been wiped down in years and to boot when people order food from tables, it is made at sushi bar then thrown on a dirty rack to be picked up by server, which I observed, dirty dishes next to prepared food going out and dirty rags next to of course the dirty wall. This to say the least was my last time going to any Mikunis. Oh and I wont tell you how horrified I was when they opened the microwave.......

I'm new to the Roseville area, and was debating trying either Mikuni or Blue Nami for Japanese food. I'm really glad I chose Mikuni, because my boyfriend and I had a great first experience. The staff/service was very fast and friendly, and all the food was fresh with a nice presentation, and while portions weren't huge I didn't leave hungry either. We decided to order off the "tapas" menu rather than a lunch special so we could try a variety of things. We had steamed rice, miso soup (a great value at $1 a bowl), cucumber rolls, pork pan-seared gyoza, ginger pork, and the bonzai salad, and we weren't disappointed with any of the dishes (despite the fact that our gyoza was forgotten initially, but after we pointed it out to the waiter he quickly brought it out). Overall it was very clean, nice atmosphere, and a great place to go to escape the heat and to get to try a lot of new things to share. We are already planning our next visit! We visited the location at the Fountains in Roseville.

  • Simone A.

Last time I went I felt the quality of the sushi rolls had dropped since the times I had previously eaten at this location, while the prices remained high. I'm not saying the restaurant isn't good, it's better than most other sushi locations in the area, but it's not my favorite any longer.

Service: 2** Food: 5***** The service is sparse, we waited close to five minutes after being seated for anyone to approach the table at all. Our server was friendly but most likely overwhelmed, because we hardly saw him at all. This is consistent with the other times that I've been here for lunch... So why do I go back? The food is exceptional, in particular I would suggest the Carmichael and Incredible Rolls. They are both wonderful, and have a unique flavor that I have not found at other sushi restaurants. The caramelized BBQ sauce on the Incredible Roll won me over in an instant. So I keep going back and waiting through the slow service for that incredible Incredible Roll.

I am a regular at Mikunis, it is one of my fav restaurants!! I love their service, sushi, and happy hour! I am a regular at the downtown location as well as at Taro's. However, today I had the most disappointing service at the Roseville location. We were greeted and seated promptly. The server was kind, courteous and informative. We were seated at the sushi bar. It was this seating location that took us downhill. There was an obvious language barrier between us and him. I ordered the DMC roll and my boyfriend ordered the Judie Two roll. The sushi chef made the Judie Two roll and gave it to my boyfriend. It sat for 25 minutes, waiting for the other roll..He was not planning on making another roll for us. About 10 minutes in, a father and his14 year old daughter came in and sat down next to us. The sushi chef asked them what they wanted, gave them double edamame, and made small talk with them. I realized he was going to make their rolls before mine and I asked him if he would be able to make mine. He apologized, and then proceeded to make the father and daughter's two rolls!!!!! I have never felt so disrespected! I won't be comin back to this location. And I really really hope Taro or management sees this. I know they would not approve.

I used to love coming here, spinning the wheel, laughing at the shirts, SAKEEEEE BOMB (I digress) but now, the quality has digressed to that of a bento box shop. When I paid $14 for a role that had imitation crab it, I was pissed. What a slap your patrons in the face with a dead fish. NOT COOL. This should be the type of place where I don't have to say, "hey, don't put fake crab in my role." I mean, YUCK. Do yourself a favor, GO TO KRU. All of the rolls are fresh, authentic and sophisticated (no, this is not a personal ad). Anyway, leave this place to the college kids who eat Kalifornia rolls.

Is it just me or is the quality and portion size going down and the price going up? Last time I went I got a mafia roll, a maki, some nigiri and some sake and I swear the roll had gotten smaller. Also the fish on the nigiri look destroyed and the maki roll that nearly fell apart because it wasn't rolled properly! I remember when Mikuni's was just a small restaurant out in Fair Oaks and now its just gotten so commercial that the quality is lacking. Every once in a while I just want some plain ole' California style Sushi (because lets be straight only a handful of dishes are traditional at Mikuni) but I am starting to worry that the restaurant is loosing its touch.

I like the food here it is fresh tasting gives you a Japanese feeling I lived in Japan for a long time only Japan could live up to those standards! So I base my score on American sushi restaurants in japan maybe a 2. On the other hand waiters step your japanese up the word your looking for is "Sumimasen" I don't see any Rs in that its like a japanese pirate taught them haha

The location on Eureka looks small from the outside but it's actually a large space inside.. Surprise, surprise. And it's super busy. Crammed. A lot of the parking spaces had a posted 1 hour limit. Seeing as we've never been to this location, we didn't know how service would be or how long it would take.. We roamed the lot for a spot with no such posting. I never really was into Mikuni but a lot of people are and if they want to go to Mikuni, far be it for me to object. This time around, it was me wanting to go. It's because of Condra.. whose staple of ordering Sauteed White Tuna and allowing me to try it has made me look forward to something at a Mikuni. We had good service. We watched others get up and leave from lack of service. So I don't know, folks.. It could go either way.

Sushi here was delicious. We had the midtown roll and incredible roll. Both of them were great. The service was outstanding. I have been to more sushi restaurants than I can count and this is by far my favorite.

Yeah, yeah, it's good! The service is great, and it's always packed (which is good and bad I guess). They've been around since before sushi restaurants became popular. I think the veggie choices are kind of ok compared to other restaurants (see Sushi Unlimited) but I do like that their tempura batter is made from scratch and doesn't have egg in it. In general, their choices of all rolls is big though! A whole page for raw rolls and half a page for non-raw, in addition to tons of other choices for bento boxes and such. It also helps that this is right next door to the Century theatre, we tend to go here right before we see a movie! Other than that we don't really go here too much because it's just so busy, and there's a bazillion other options for sushi in Roseville and Rocklin.

Nice cozy area to visit, I took my younger son and he loves sahi mahi rolls and they didn't have them on the menu but they made them special. That's good customer service!

Mikuni Roseville is hands down the best location of all the Mikuni resturants! The atmosphere is the best, plus the layout is great and I love the far back room for big events! You can go to Mikuni on Monday nights for Monday night football night where you can do all you can eat for just $25! Score!! No pun intended! ;) The must rolls to get are.... 1. The Jananeese Mafia Roll 2. Peter 2 3. Spicy Johnny 4. Marilyn Monroll 5.The Puff Daddy 6. Fair Oaks Roll 7. Rainbow roll I can go on and on but those are my top favorite rolls! You can usually have a wait of 30-45 minutes on a friday or saturday evening so come early if you can like right around 5 or 6 to ensure you get in and out. If you go on your bday you get to spin the giant Mikuni wheel to win all sorts of prizes! (last time I won the $100 gift cert!) Ask for Taro he is one of the owners and is so friendly, you can ask him to make his signature roll and he will come up with a special creative roll just for you! Ok all this reviewing is making me hungry! Enjoy!!

I have been coming here for years, and if I had written this review earlier this year it would have been 4 or 5 stars, but something has changed. I still like eating there, and will continue as long as it doesn't digress any more. Just little things, like getting our order wrong when we were dinning in. (just 4 days ago) Then 2 days ago the to-go order was awful, the sauces weren't the same and they completely forgot to include a roll we ordered (maybe I am not happy, because it was my roll...) I would have never considered eating at any other sushi bar last week, but I may try a different place in roseville just to see if I can get back to the quality I used to have at Mikuni's.

I hadn't been to Mikuni in awhile and was excited to try it again, and man this place did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in, it was lively and busy (this on a Tuesday night, too-- good to see). We were greeted nicely and showed almost immediately to a table. Great service from start to finish. The waiter was attentive, helpful with suggestions, and checked on us several times. My soda never got lower than the halfway point, and my friend's beer was also kindly looked-after :) Then there was the food. In a word, yum! We ordered off a dinner for two menu for $40, which includes several items you pick from different sections, plus a dessert to share. I'm not a big fan of edamame but my friend is, so we got that for him. It came out fresh and prompt. We also got a seared sea steak that made me reminisce about the plentiful fresh fish of the Hawaiian seas-- delicious. We got two rolls, Bob's Roll and another one I'm blanking out on right now (Spike's?); both were awesome. We were pretty stuffed to the gills by the time the neapolitan mochi ice cream came out, but couldn't help ourselves-- we finished that off because it was so good. The energy of this place is fantastic, and I could see why it was so busy. I think they have a really good thing going on here, and it's not overpriced. Bravo, Mikuni!

Mikuni has been getting it right for a long time. I have eaten at 3 different locations around Sacramento, and it is always consistently great. From their great selection of draft bears to their fantastic selection of both sashimi and rolls. I love em. Nice place to take a date or the whole family.

The food is the only reason we've ever even tried to come here; It's DELICIOUS and the service is fast. But the dinner wait for seating is always loooong and finding a seat in the waiting area (even when you call ahead) is less than comfortable; it's always crazy packed and crazy loud, but if you don't mind a hectic atmosphere this is the place for you!

Once again, disappointed by you again Mikuni's. Why did I return knowing I was going to get sub par food again. For those of you that love the rolls with sweet sugary sauces drenched over your food, this may be your place. Read my Fair Oaks establishment review. This was a spur of the moment visit late night, to go order. I ordered the chirashi, a seaweed salad, and some kind of roll for the wife. As for the seaweed salad order, it was a $5 dish that had about a pinch of salad in it. We finished it in two bites. The roll was mediocre at best, with sauce covering the whole roll. Nothing spectacular at all. Now for the biggest disappointment, the chirashi. The one dish that is impossible to mess up. It's sashimi on a bed of sushi rice. Each restaurant garnishes and presents it in there own special way. This is the one dish you can tell how good a restaurant is by #1 tasting the freshness of the varieties of fish and #2 tasting the consistency of the sushi rice. Here was the variety of seafood and fillers presented in a 2nd grade fashion; 2 pieces of sake (salmon), 2 pieces of maguro (tuna), 2 pieces of tako (octopus), 1 piece of tam ago (sweet egg), and a single piece of unagi (eel). Let me add, the portion size of each piece was about a silver dollar and all for $18.95. This is embarrassing Taro. What happened to the quality and traditions of Japanese food. Have you sold out to the mainstream of this town? Remember your roots of this business and the quality of what you present. It's very unfortunate to see all the other avenues Mikuni's has strived for with it's charities. Remember, you are still a nicchuukan that is providing for quality, not quantity. Pros: Location Cons: Quality has diminished over the years Parking

Went for the first time for lunch and was impressed. The staff seemed to be having a great time, goofing off and acting silly. At first I was a little taken aback by this, but I just rolled with it and had a good time. The food was excellent, fresh, fairly priced, and served faster than I expected. I guess my only complaint is that the spicy roll we ordered was not very spicy. Next time I will ask the staff to turn up the heat.

My family and I stopped here on our road trip back to the bay from a weekend in Tahoe. This place was pretty busy when we walked in, always a good sign. I'm not sure if this is a normal thing for them, but when we were taken to our table, each place setting had a bowl of hot miso soup waiting for us! How awesome is that?! Their menu is pretty huge, and I had a really hard time deciding on what to order. I ended up getting the train wreck roll, which was delicious! I can't remember every single thing in it, because there was a lot, but I know it had shrimp tempura, avocado, unagi, and some sort of spicy fish. I also tried some of the other rolls other people ordered, all of which were really good. Everyone else was very happy with their dinners. The prices are reasonable and the portions are pretty generous for a Japanese restaurant. The service was also great. Oh, another cool thing, which isn't entirely relevant, but I'm going to mention it anyways: their restrooms have bidets! They're totally going modern Japan-style. So, don't be surprised if you sit down and the seat is all warmed up... its not from the person sitting there before you. Ok that was all a little TMI. ANYWAYS... So, I loved this place, and if I'm ever passing through Roseville again, I'd definitely stop by.

I was very unhappy with my lunch today. I ordered spicy tuna roll, the most non-fishy fish and It tasted like I was in a dirty fish market. The waiter did nothing to attempt to solve the problem, so I asked for the manager who told me he would take it off the bill, duh. Then at my prompting offered me dessert which I was too full for (from vegetarian tempura, which was pretty good -- maybe because there was no fish in it.) Rather than offer me a cupon for another time to get me back, he reinterated that it was off the bill. Well he just lost his chance to get me back into the place to make me happy. Last time I was unhappy with their food it took me two years to give them another try. If you are sensitive to the freshness of your fish, find another sushi restaurant!

Greatest Sushi place I have ever eaten at. The service is amazing, and the food is even better. The fish is always super fresh, and We are never disappointed. Mikuni's has been around my whole life growing up in Sacramento, and having been to all of them including Toro's I would have to say that this one is the best. Always great service, had the Incredible roll, fair oaks roll and some albacore with white sauce. Get a scallop shooter instead of an oyster shooter, way delicious! Come here for lunch and get the happy hour prices, i heard thats still going on

Wow, this place has super friendly service. You are greeted by like, 6 different people upon your arrival. The rolls are clean and tight. Try the zig-zag. Tempura was good, however, it is very batter-heavy, so beware. would recommend

My best friend introduced me to sushi at Mikuni. Every other place I've ever been to has never measured up. Their food is amazing. No other word for it. Their chefs always greet you enthusiastically when you come in, and when you sit at the sushi bar they remember you from last time. They talk to you and ask how you have been since they saw you last. If you like your drinks strong, you will love their collection of mixed drinks. Food to try: the zig zag handroll, the marilyn monroll, the benjamin roll...and believe it or not, their vegetarian rolls appeal to even me- and I can't stand vegetarian dishes normally. Five stars!

Delicious- YES (mmm!) Pricey- YES ($$$) Crowded- YES (aka loooooong waits) Their specialty rolls are awesome. *ehem train wreck and incredible* Free miso soup during dinner hours. Heads up - Food can be way oversauced, so if you're not a sauce person, speak up!

I don't know that I'll ever know why the best sushi in the world is in Roseville...but it is. I'm a huge fan of the red and white sauces -- They're good on everything. My favorite things are the BBQ tuna, seared poki salad, spicy dream 1, and before I developed an allergy to shellfish (annoying), the Carmen roll. But, really, I've never had anything I didn't like here. Plus, if it's your birthday you can spin the birthday wheel. One year I won a Japanese beer which had to be traded out for a soda because I was underage and other year my prize was to kiss my favorite sushi chef.

LOVE Mikuni's! I go there once a month to get my sushi fix. I love the tuna sliders, the Marylin Monroll and the Udon is delicious. The 911 roll and Fair Oaks roll remain staples. My favorite party platter is the D. You can never go wrong with whatever you order. Everything is fresh. Everyone I bring here from out of town says it's the best sushi they have ever had.

I've been going to Mikuni since 1997. I had my 8th grade graduation at the Hazel location, and Mikuni restaurants have always had a place in my heart. It's crazy how much this chain has grown in the last decade. Anyways, on to the dishes! You can never go wrong with any of the boxes which is the best bang for the buck. But, if you're feeling baller, hit up the rolls all day! My personal fave to get when I'm hungry is the Japanese burrito. It's a monster roll made for two to share, but then if you have an appetite like mine, you get this all to yourself. Seared albacore is bomb. Fair Oaks roll is a classic. There's way too many on the menu to describe here, but there should be a roll that will suit anyone's fancy.

I love Mikuni and anytime we are in Sacramento, we seem to only eat at one of the Mikuni locations (or Taro - which is actually my preference). Mikuni in Roseville was a convenient stop for dinner on our way back from Tahoe. Same menu as the other Mikuni locations - fun sushi rolls, great typical Japanese cooked dishes (Sukiyaki, Teriyaki, Donburi...) and a predominantly Gen X crowd. Hands down my favorite unique Mikuni item we always order is the BBQ Tuna (comes in 3 pieces, 5 pieces or a dinner portion) served with a duo of sauces. I can't get enough of the sauces. Seared white tuna with a spicy red sauce and a creamy miso sauce - such a great combination. For the sports fans, they have TVs placed all over the restaurant so you don't have to miss a play while dining and imbibing. Expect to wait if you go around a typical dinner hour, the place gets crowded!!!

Hubby and I finally went to Mikuni's in Roseville. Since it was our first time there, we decided to go with our waiter's recommendations. The sushi menu was just too long for us first-timers! So we ordered from the 'Mikuni's Favorites' list and got the Trainwreck and Incredible rolls. Both were SO very good. Because of the spicy sauces, we rarely had to dip into soy sauce/wasabi. From the appetizers list, we orderd the mixed tempura and sesame chicken. Hubby really enjoyed the sesame chicken appetizer. It had a light crisp coating surrounding tender pieces of white breast meat. We also loved the mixed tempura because it didn't have a greasy feel. Definitely loved the fast modern Japanese vibe of the restaurant. The sushi is great so it's no wonder why the place is so packed. This place reminds us of one of our favorite sushi places in the Bay Area - Miyake's in Cupertino (near De Anza) and Palo Alto (near Stanford). Although I think Mikuni's is definitely more modern and hip:) And how nice, Mikuni's is very involved in the community!

MIkunis is always a good place to go get sushi regardless of location however this location is always packed. A co worker and I went there after work and sat at the bar. Being a vegetarian is never a concern when you go here since they customize to your liking for which we leave handsome tips :) Good rolls, and excellent rolls is all you will get here. Diff versions of rolls are served in every location. The pimp my roll from the Arden mall location can not be found in Roseville. Never fear, tell the chef and he will drum up something close right away. So why did I take away a star? The service wasn't good at least not what we are used to. I think I'll stick to the locations near elk grove and dt rather than venture out there again.

Happy hour 2-5pm! Yes!! I love mikuni happy hour! They always have fresh food that hits the spot. As usual we ordered spicy scallop hand roll, zig zag hand roll, fair oaks roll and pepperfin. For those who have never had pepperfin... You have to try it! It's sashimi served in some sort of soysauce-y sauce with jalapeño slices. Yours suppose to put slices of jalapeño on top of the sashimi, dip it in the sauce and stick it in your mouth :) yummm!! It's not spicy at all and the sashimi practically melts in your mouth!

Visit this place at 4:40ish. Happy hour ends at 5, and my friends and I basically came for the happy hour. We waited for our friend which came around 5 and it wasnt until 5:15 that we ordered. Sadly, happy hour ended already and we couldn't order anything. I mean, we were there before 5! That must count right?! Sadly it doesn't so whatever. Fuck it. The food: I ordered the Torched Kaiser Roll with white BBQ sauce on the side. Fucking FASTASTIC. This roll was huge and it was INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS! Oh man. Tuna, yellowfin. And being torched, it had a very nice hint of flavor. It's like, you get a hint of smokey flavor to the fish, but it's not cooked. The fish is basically seared, so you still get that raw goodness. There was a lot of sauce on this roll, just the way I like it. And the white bbq sauce goes great with it. If you guys haven't ordered the white bbq sauce on the side, you should START. It's the best sauce in my opinion. It's spicy but it's not overpowering. It literally goes good with anything. You can dip a fucking edamame in it and it will taste 10x better. You can dip a carrot in it and you'll start to love carrots. But anyways, the Torched Kaiser has finally become my favorite roll. Anyways, the thing I didn't like about this place was the fact that I had to ask the lady for Miso soup. Otherwise, she wouldn't have ever brought it out. Also, they require ID for the Birthday wheel, which other Mikuni never check. So I was kinda pissed cause I didn't have my ID on me at the time so I didn't get to spin the wheel. Not bad I guess. I'd rather go to a different Mikuni cause the environment wasn't really nice. It was actually really ugly. But who cares right? We come for the food and service.

Very long wait for a table, very loud dining room. I resorted to texting the person across the table because I couldn't hear them over the din. The service was slow, it took 15 minutes to get a drink order back. And expensive...wondering what all the hype is about Mikuni?

We stopped by Mikuni's for dinner on our way home from Reno on Sunday. I've been to the Mikuni's at Arden Fair and I kept raving to the s/o that their food was pretty good, the couple times that I've eaten there. We arrived around 7:30pm and the resto was packed but there wasn't a wait. I kind of didn't like the dining room setup as it almost felt like a cafeteria, with rows and rows of tables leaving just a foot or two between you and your neighbor. With that said, having all those people in such close quarters equals a lot of noise, chatter and the inability to carry on a true conversation without the table next to you eavesdropping or rolling their eyes. I don't remember their menu being so madly huge which made it so difficult to figure out what to order because everything sounded so good! The s/o ordered three rolls and I ordered their Spicy #1 (Seared Tuna), Puff Daddy (Fried Shrimp stuffed w/Crab) and an order of CA Roll. The Puff Daddy was delicious! If I had to describe it, it was a CA roll with shrimp served tempura style. The sauce that accompanied it was good and I liked the finely cut green onions. The Spicy #1 was really good! It was topped with thinly sliced green onions and served with the orange and red sauce, I had to ask for an extra serving of the red sauce...it's crack! Although after awhile, the two sauces got overwhelming and in the end, I think I would've preferred it being served in a soy-ginger sauce instead. The CA Roll (#1 to be exact) was standard. I was disappointed that for $6, although it came with eight pieces, they used crab with a "k." The s/o who's a sushi die-hard liked the rolls but thought that they were pretty heavy on the rice, which made the rolls look big, therefore, making you full faster. IMO, I love their sushi creations, seafood plates and appetizers but the menu is a bit too trendy and just about everything is drenched in a creamy sauce, regardless of color, which is just masking the true flavor of the food, not to mention, the overkill with the use of the green onions. Our server was okay, a bit distant. I knew that Miso soup was complimentary during dinner as every table he served had bowls of it but he never asked if we wanted any, not sure why. It's not like I wanted it because it was pretty warm outside but it would've been nice to have been offered it equally as he did with his other tables. Overall, nice sushi spot, wish they'd open up locations in the Bay Area as they could easily bump up the prices and make a huge killing! But until then, if I'm ever in the Sac area and craving sushi, I'll choose Mikuni's hands down...but the Arden Fair location.

I've been to this Mikuni's several times over the years...especially when I use to live in Citrus Heights. Pretty consistent...and always busy. I came here yesterday with my youngest daughter and her half sister - my honorary daughter :-) They both ordered the Veggie Bento Box and I had the Iron Chef Combo. Lots of fresh fish for me (5 pieces nigiri - very fresh), but the tempura shrimp in my Iron Chef roll tasted like frozen breaded shrimp from Gorton's...more breading than fish! Tempura is suppose to be light and not heavy. The girls' veggie bento box looked yummy with assorted tempura vegetables, tempura tofu, avocado roll, rice and salad. Everything looked fresh and fortunately for me, they didn't want their tempura tofu, so I got to enjoy that later when I returned to the East Bay.

Mikuni where have you been all my life? Oh wait, yes that's right, you're in Sacramento and I'm in the City. What I am to do!?!? *tear*... Well lucky me this weekend I was able to come back and experience 1). really good Japanese food 2). gorging like no other and 3). sitting on a fancy toilet that CAN clean, dry and warm your booty. I came with a group of friends after an exhausting day of boarding. We always make a pit stop somewhere off 80 so why not Mikuni? We were smart and called ahead when we left the resort to make reservations because what I hate the most is waiting and especially waiting when you're starving and tired. We timed the drive perfectly down the mountain so we arrived right on time for our reservation. We were seated promptly after the question (I hate this the most) was asked "is everyone in your party here" ... and we were whisked away! All the boys let the girls do the ordering since we are pros and knew what we wanted. They used to have boats that you could order with any amount fixed to it. Like a $200 sushi boat with sashimi and various rolls that you called ...well over the years this changed and finally they just got rid of the boats. I loved the boats - when they brought it out to your table people would just stare and go "ooooooohhh and ahhhhhh" over it while they're looking at their tiny measly plates.... Anyways back to the story .. we ordered a couple of their party platters D (rolls) and E (sashimi!) and zig zag roll, santa Claus, and peter 2. Our server told us it was alot of food but you know what - we are pros leave us alone! haha... All the food arrived and we dug in. Sorry there's no pictures because imagine 6 hungry people - we just dove in and went for it. All the sashimi was super fresh and the rolls were yummy (not too much rice but some a little too much special sauce). We ate and ate and ate...and we killed everything!!! Our server was quite impressed. I think all the food was actually enough for 8-10 people. That's how much food they give you. Our bill came out to $38 pp including tip and drinks. Not bad at all for Japanese. I will be back next time I'm trekking up or down 80!

A colleague bet another to eat a ball of wasabi and his bill will be taken care of. He took two wasabi balls and half the restaurant watched. My friend finished with a standing o. And, the chefs started giving us special dishes. Bottom line, this is the place that made me fall in love with sushi. I've had sushi from all over and this place provided the best for me. BTW, my friend couldn't taste water for a week after the wasabi numbed his taste buds!

I absolutely love the sushi here. My wife isn't a fish eater so she will order chicken and loves it from here. My only complaint is the price. Many of there rolls are over priced and are small. If they were to lower prices or have a discount menu/day I would come more often.

Awesome Sushi! This particular Mikunis (the other ones weren't as good) is probably the best sushi I've ever had, whenever my family comes up from Bay Area they always want to go here. The sauces they put on sushi are unique and amazing. My favorites are the: Incredible, Spicey Johny, Tommy Roll, Black & White, and Pepperfin. They continue to amaze every single time after 5+ years of going here. Ambiance is only ok however, kind of loud but sitting at the sushi bar is an experience in itself watch the chefs make the sushi. Must I warn its on the pricey side though $10-18 per specialty roll and takes a few to fill you up. All in all if you're looking for a new sushi restaurant I'd heavily recommend here, I've tried other local restaurants and they couldn't compare.

Look, this is not real Japanese food. Real sushi does not have mayo slathered all over it. Nor is it generally deep fried up the wazoo. The sushi here is ok, nothing more than that. The nigiri that I had was not particularly fresh, something that I find unforgivable for a sushi place. Their cooked dishes are a better bet. Remember, don't let the pretty mayo slathered sushi rolls fool you. They're super fattening (especially if deep fried stuff lurks inside), and it's not all that tasty.

How could you not love Mikunis!?! I can't bring myself to eat anywhere else. Only downfall is food doesn't all come out at once. I'm usually done with my dish before anyone else at my table even gets their food. Will always go back though.

Yes, like every other sushi lover in the Sacramento area, I heart Mikuni! Granted, it is not the least expensive sushi option, but the taste & quality are consistent, the service is good - even when they are jam packed and the veg sushi offerings are wonderful!

Mikuni's just does awesome sushi hands down. No other sushi place really comes close. Last time I went the server offered a sauce dish sampler which was really awesome. I'm a big fan of the sushi sauces and it was a lot of fun to sample the different ones.

I love going to Mikuni's for Happy Hour. Even though it ends at 5. Decided to try the Illegal Asparagus since I love asparagus and it was really good, not overcooked. And i always get the Mixed Tempura and the Sesame Chicken which is always good. The tempura was a little small but what do you expect for happy hour. I love edamame so I got the Freaky Edamame and it was good as usual. Also got a roll but do not remember the name of it. It was also good. Little dissapointed that they did not have Kirin Ichiban but Sapporo did the trick. If you can make it for happy hour, than do it. But either way it will be awesome! Also the server we had was also very good and made sure we had everything we needed.

I am in complete and utter love with the atmosphere, food and customer service. This place is amazing and I crave it even after I have stuffed my face with it. Its fun to sit at the sushi bar and chit chat with the guys making rolls, they are always happy to answer my crazy questions. I recommend the "Marilyn Monroll", "The Spicy Tuna" ( with creme cheese added to it) and the "Flamming Shrooms". Mmmm, I gotta go get me some sushi now :)

I love sushi, and i have been to several places, but nothing has ever beaten Mikuni's. Best sushi overall! Some of our favorite's; Pepperfin Tuna, BBQ Ahi, Zig Zag hand roll, and the Incredible Roll! Either way - you can't go wrong - everyone is delicious!

A few friends and I went for lunch last week and I loved our waitress. Really paid close attention to us. She knew just when to come check on us!

This place has good sushi, but they are too egotistical here. If you plan a party/group everyone has to show up before they'll seat you. They will make you wait in the waiting area until every person in your party arrives. I'll never plan a gathering there again after my bday a few yrs back. It's expensive and I'd rather go to BN down the street, where they take care of their guests.

It's hands down my friend's favorite place. And for the right rolls, I can see why. Kaiser, Trainwreck, Zig Zag, and Flaming Shrooms. All were very delicious. My only complaint is that everything had a deep friend shrimp in it or lots of sauce. Typically, I don't mind... but lately, I've grown to appreciate the more simple rolls where I can enjoy the freshness of the fish. I'd give this place 4 stars, but we ordered To-Go (since the place gets pretty packed for dinner on friday nights), and the cashier was talking to his coworkers and not very attentive in giving us our stuff and taking our CC payment.

Food was good. Service was bad. Tonight I had 3-4 different people serving us, which one was our server? No idea. One person greeted us, got our drinks, another person brought the drinks and took our order who seemed angry that we were there and even more angry when my girlfriend asked a question about a menu item. My girlfriends dinner came out 10 minutes before my rolls, I watched her eat as I waited for my rolls. Another person brought my rolls. Which were good. Another person dropped the check and got us out the door. I was happy with the rolls. A grilled chicken breast for 12.50$ seemed a little steep. I've had Mikuni sushi on several occasions outside of the restaurant and enjoyed it. This was my first time actually in a Mikuni restaurant and I will never go again. There are a lot of sushi places to go in the area with good food, better service, and better prices.

I was very skeptical about Mikuni since I'm from the bay which is known for sushi. I have been here about 5 times, and each time I have not been disappointed. I love the atmosphere and the service is really good. They have a good selection of sake and japanese beer....everything from Saparo to Kirin to Asahi. My favorite thing are their rolls. They have more than 3 pages of choices. My favorites are the Norway, Masa 3, the Benjamin, and the BMW. The selection for rolls are insane. For those non-sushi lovers they offer the bento boxes. The fish is fresh too, which is great. Need i mention, that their service is amazing. I also like the fact that the sushi chefs greet you when you come in and thank you when u leave. Outstanding service!

Best Japanese Restaurant in Roseville area. Although not really authentic Japanese food, but the food here is certainly delicious. The service and ambiance is good too. I had sashimi and it was fresh!!! The only downfall is that I always have to wait to get a seat. WORTH THE WAIT!

I've been to this one in particular once..(I've also been to the one other one near downtown sac)..on my way back from snowboarding...great fresh sushi, and a great atmosphere. They have HUGE rolls, and everything we ordered was pretty good. It is a little on the pricier side compared to some places i've been, but it's worth the little extra $. It does get pretty packed, so expect a some wait time if you're going w/ a large group. The one in downtown sac has a bar, so you can grab a few drinks before dinner.

Obviously I came right after the manger had just got done chewing the staff out about not up-selling enough. Here's how my experience went: My husband and I wanted to grab a super quick appetizer before a meeting and Mikuni's was next door to our meeting spot, so we decided to pop in. We only had 30 minutes so we said we were just going to get one thing off the happy hour menu-no drinks because of our meeting. When told that we weren't drinking, the waitress actually said "You know that there are only $3 beers on the happy hour menu." WAY TO INSINUATE THAT I AM JUST A CHEAP BASTARD YOU BEAZY. Then the sushi chef kept trying to up-sell us on more food when we clearly explained that we were in a rush and this was NOT our dinner, just a quick bite to stave off our hunger. In fact, we told him we might come back later for dinner after the meeting, but he just kept on pressuring. Then our b#$@ of a waitress comes up and says super sarcastically "you had better eat a bunch of edemame because that appetizer isn't big enough." WAY TO BE PISSY THAT OUR BILL ISN'T GOING TO BE BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR LIKING. Here's a tip though, your not getting a tip anyway! All in all, my worst restaurant experience in a long time. In this economy it is probably not a good idea to insult and make your customers feel so uncomfortable that they are driven to write nasty Yelp reviews-just a suggestion though.

Would you like a side of fish with that sauce? It's hard to tell if the fish is fresh or not since they cover it in sauces... mostly mayonnaise based, blah! I gotta give it to them though, they do have a good vibe even though they have taken Sushi and adopted some Nascar advertising techniques when it comes to the sushi chef's attire. Mikuni looks to be a well ran business... as far as the food, not worth the hype. I've had mixed emotions on the service, sometimes you get the girl who is just pissed at the world because her parents took her beemer away for sneaking out with her boyfriend and then sometimes you get someone who actually wants their job. Some dishes that are worth mentioning: BBQ albacore, and The Black and White, but these are supposed to be sauced up... the rolls on the other hand shouldn't be dipped in sauce. Would I go back...Yes. Would I explore other options first... definitely.

So pretty much all this review needs to say is: BBQ Tuna and Incredible Roll If that was all I posted in here, it would speak for itself. They use the freshest fish, and you get what you are paying for.

The rolls were really good. There's also a ton to choose from. My wife asked to customize one and the chef had no problem with it. They put a lot of sauce (or mayo/aioli) on the rolls which some people may not like. Docked 1 star for slow service. It was pretty crowded when we were in there, but still, it was a little slow. We were sitting at the sushi bar which is generally a bit quicker, but not the case this time. The chef did manage to memorize our order though, even though he made about 8 rolls ahead of ours. I'll come back someday to try it again.
