Decent place for a quick bite to eat. What attracted me were their prices! I like their junior sub which only cost $1.69. It's pretty small and there isn't much in there considering the price for the junior. I think it's decent if you're on a very low budget. It's a plus for me cause it fills me up, since it doesn't take a lot to fill me up.

In MY opinion this place has what I need for a subway sandwhich fix. I always get the stuffer and I'm good to go. Great portions, bread is good and it's made just right. Henceforth, I don't do that other chain of which there is one on every corner, any more.

Would of given 5 stars if I didn't receive such rude service. When I was placing my order the women taking it kept rolling her eyes. I ordered 10 sandwiches and was Given the number 78. When my order was called it was under a different number so when I went to pick it up I asked a girl with red hair about my order. And she told me that "I picked up the wrong number" she said it with an attitude and rolled her eyes.

Delicious little sandwiches for dirt cheap! Yummy! The single layer six inch mini sub is perfect for a decent sized appetite that doesn't require being stuffed to the gills. Love that Italian dressing. Regular sized sandwiches both hot and cold, are way cheaper than subway and taste better, kind of homemade. Their bread is delicious and actually adds to the sandwich instead of being- well- just bread.

Pros: cheap $1.89 for a jr sub Cons: rude (was on phone), bad quality I really wanted to give more stars because this place is cheap, but the last two times i went I've had bad experiences. First off, the staff is rude, the girl was on her phone showing another girl about her shopping experience(i overheard them) and she didn't notice me when i came in or ignored me... Then the bad quality is for the two times I've ate here and got stomach aches. I assume they don't follow proper guidelines when they store their meats. Summary: DONT EAT HERE

Rude employees and rude owner. Business owner knowingly breaks California Civil Code section 1748.1. When confronted with the fact that their actions contradict California law, they bar people from their business so they can continue to illegally rip off their customers. No respect for their customers and practice illegal business practices. If they knowingly skirt around laws you can only imagine how much they respect health codes. Oh, and know that their "salads" are two spoons of dressing away from being called soup. Sandwiches aren't terrible, but the place doesn't look clean. Buyer beware.

I really wanted to like this place.. I really did Pros: Dirt cheap. $1.89 for a 6 inch sub? You can't get any cheaper ANYWHERE. Place is clean. Love the old decor. Subs are filling and the employees are alright. Cons: Quality is so so so low... like non edible low. I'd rather eat canned food low.. the smell of the place is really strong. Like what ever they use to clean it.. maybe use something else? I wanted to sit down and eat there because I love the decor, but just couldn't get myself to due to that. Bottom line: I really really really really wanted to like this place because I heard good things about it, but it tastes terrible! I ordered way too much too.. I'm a big eater so I ordered 4 of the cheap 6 inch ones with different types of meat and the antipasto salad. Was very disappointed and almost threw up forcing myself to eat 2 of them and the antipasto because I don't like wasting food. Not only was the meat poor quality, but the bread was too. Maybe different people have different tastes, but I won't be coming back again. Wish I could say otherwise.. I really do.

If you are a poor college student looking for a 2 dollar sandwich this place maybe for you. If not maybe skip it. My boyfriend go the hot pastrami which wasn't too bad. I enjoyed it. I got the turkey and roast beef and it was flavorless! The whole thing pretty much tasted bland. The meat pretty much tasted like nothing! The girl working the register had zero warmth or personality and looked like she hated life. I think if I was back in the area I would still skip this place.

This place is not bad. I first heard about it from a friend that said the subs are 1.89 for a 6 inch Jr sub. I was amazed at such a price so I of course had to go try it. I got the 1.89 pastrami sub, And also the 8 dollars ish ultimate steak sub. The steak sub was good, I feel like they could have added more slices of meat though, they were rather thin. The Bacon was nice And crunchy though, just like Bacon should be, And avocado added a nice creamy touch. The bread was Meh, nothing too special. The 1.89 sub was alright, but for 1.89 u cant expect it to be of 5 dollar quality, so for a 1.89 jr sub, id say its good if ur just hungry and want somethig cheap. They give you one slice of pastrami and lettuce and cheese on bread, and it seems like they splash on some vinigrette. Bottom line, if u want something cheap, a 1.89 sub will do the job, but of course it will be $ 1.89 quality.

Was in mood for some simple homemade type of deli sandwich today and found this wonderful place right across from my apt! What a surprise!! $1.69 6" pastrami sub??? 1/2lb macaroni salad??!! This seemed bit unreal to me. When I got the sandwich/sub it had 2 thin slices of pastrami&cheese and easy sauce and lettus etc honestly I didnt think it will be good..... BUT I WAS SO WRONG!!! for less than $3, I was so satisfied with both sandwich and the macaroni! I will definitely go back to try other meals. Looking for a simple, healthy, cheap, and homemade like meal and still be satisfied&be full? Def. come check this place out!

Good alternative instead of going to Subway. Skip the $1.99 subway specials. Only have lettuce and tomato and barely any meat. Went here and got the 12 inch turkey with extra turkey. It was delicious. The wait for the food is way longer than going to Subway. If short on time, skip this place or order by phone.

Just no!!! Made the mistake of coming here on a Saturday bc my wonderful Tummy Stuffers is closed on weekends... Subs are so cheap for a reason! First of all, this place has a strong, disgusting formaldehyde-ish smell when you walk in. The "deco" and tables are super outdated and old. 2 girls working are HORRIBLE and cold, no manners. Ok for the food- SO bland!!! I had a turkey & cheese with mustard.. All I could taste was sour ass mustard and bread. The mustard must have been old. I could go to a grocery store and buy that cheap ass Buddig meat and make a better sand which! The meat at Hero's is that "mystery" meat! "Oh, EW why are there splotches and discoloration in my meat?" Type of meat. BF got the hot pastrami & it was unfortunately the same.....

Service:/ zombies. I could eat their sandwiches all day. I don't like that they charge for anything extra. I would like to add just one topping w/o paying .30 cents

Better sandwiches than Subway at a much better price. The junior sandwich deals are pretty much unbeatable. The standard torpedo rolls that they use are my absolute favorite, especially with the mayo. This is the ideal spot in Riverside for a classic, affordable sandwich.

I've been going there for quite a few times to the point of going consecutively for a couple of days because I just live across the street :P What I usually get is 2 Turkey Jr. Subs and let's get to the review. Fullness to me: 5 stars Surprisingly two of these jr. subs fill me more than a foot long at subway. Now I'm a guy that trains a lot and can finish a Los Jilbertos carne asada fries and still be starving, not hungry, starving. So when two "jr." subs fill me that's saying something. Taste: 4-5 Sometimes the sub tastes less 'saucy' and other times its more 'saucy'. The jr. sub consists of Italian dressing and mayo, I think but other than that the taste is good and yummy. I love the bread and how it just dissolves in my mouth when I chew. Cost: A trillion stars 1.89 for a 6" sub?!? Worth 4.08 for 2??? WURFFF Environment: 4-5 stars I would say it smells like a dentist office until I realized it was right next to a dentist's office. That would be the only thing I would say would bother people but it never bothers me. Its pretty clean in there and it looks very old school and supports Coke by the looks of it, in a heavily dominated Pepsi area. Service: 5 I don't know why reviewers say the cashier lady is negative but I guess I can see what they mean. But a job is a job and the customer service and speed of getting the subs is reasonable. I've been there at peak hours, right when they open, and when they are empty. When it's peak hours I would say it adds about an extra 3-5 minute wait but when its empty, its pretty quick. Overall this place is great and definitely worth for a college student and anyone else who would like to have a cheap filling meal! Or craving a sub. And definitely will be trying other subs once school starts!

As I too got tricked into the hype of my hero sub's. I'm sorry peeps but I got taste buds. I wasn't expecting much but I wasn't expecting to just give my $ away either, i wanted to come out somewhat satisfied. I got a turkey grinder and it was sad. My friend ordered the antipasto salad and they too were very disappointed at how sad it was. The employees weren't bad as they were just working to get the product out. I'm good, I can at least say I've been there.

  • Lex K.

My Disappointment... We were totally tricked by the 4 star rating. My 6" pastrami was probably the worst sandwich I've ever had. Ever...and I survived on budig and store brand wheat sandwiches during most of college. 1/10 as good as Subway at the same price. $4 got me a soft roll with green bits of mystery coating the outside, maybe 4 paper thin slices of over-salted rubber and a cashier with a seriously defective personality. As another reviewer said, this woman should not be allowed to talk to customers. She needs to be fired yesterday. I'm hoping this was just an off day.

I've been here a couple of times, but I've only tried the Turkey Bacon Avocado sandwich, and I absolutely love it! I hate that kind of bread that's hard to chew and makes my jaw hurt, which this place does NOT have. Their bread is tasty and soft. They kind of drench my sandwich in mayo, but luckily I like it that way. They're not stingy with their avocado, but they are a little with their meats, so if you like more than a few slices I would recommend getting extra meat. On the other hand, the service sucks. Because it was lunch hour the line was pretty long. It took me 30 minutes to get my sandwich. I had to go up and ask if mine was finished because they skipped my number, and I find out that they gave my sandwich to someone else. The lady that helped me was very rude and gave me attitude for not having my own sandwich. It's not my fault... She gave us ticket numbers so I don't get why she didn't just check them!

This is one of my favorite sandwich places. Its inexpensive and the food is awesome. I have been coming her since about 2006 when I went to UCR. The only down fall is at the owners are getting older and are becoming more detached and the girls who are left in charge dont really care. If they get more than a couple people in there, it takes a long time to get a sandwich. I have been there a few times over the last few months at about 1:30 in the afternoon on a saturday and both times, it took me about 20-25 minutes to get my sandwich. But I keep going because the sandwiches are great.

    (4)
  • Aaron R.

This place sucks. Overrated. The sandwiches are nasty. Bread s nasty. Ingredients are bland. The only reason why people like this place is because the sandwiches are cheap. The girl behind the counter is rude. Poor customer service. I ordered a veggie sub with oil. They need to learn how to make a veggie sub. Thet put no cheese, no vinaigrette (even though I told them I wanted it), on some nasty ass bread. In this area there are far more attractive options. Like sub station.

This places has alway been good. I don't come here often because the are usually closed when I get off work. When I do come in it's always a great experience. As far food goes. The service is ok it's not the best but it good enough. I keep coming back so obviously the service is ok. Streak sandwich is my favor and for the portion u get it's a good deal. I will continue to come back when I can.

This is without question the best sub shop I have ever come across and I have tried a lot of different sub shops over the years. When I lived in Riverside 20 years ago I used to eat here 3 to 4 times a week. Now, whenever I go anywhere within 10 miles of this place I always will go out of my way to stop there and get two of the 12" subs there, one to eat there and another to take home and eat later. I appreciate that many of the reviews here talk about their $1.69 jr. sub but that is really just a loss leader. If you really are serious about wanting a great sub you should go for the 6" or 12" regular subs as they are still cheaper than most shops and well worth the extra money. The real secret to these sandwichs is the bread they use. I have never been able to find it at any other sub place and it really MAKES the sandwich no matter what meat you choose. If you are looking for a place with a hard crust on their bread you should look elsewhere but if you like a soft and delicious roll this is definitely the place. I prefer the ham and turkey combination sub but I also like their tuna sub and my wife always has the meatball sub. Unlike some shops their meatballs are smaller than you usually find but they make up for it by putting a ton of them on the roll. Their service is very prompt and everyone I have had wait on me has always been very courteous, helpful and professional. This is definitely not a place you would ever go to for the ambience as it has a small dining area that is mainly like picnic benchs but the seating and table are functional if you wish to dine in but I believe most people go take-out style. The only drawback to this place is their hours. The last time I checked I believe they were only open M-F from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and I think Saturday is 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays.

I do work here. And a tip of advice, these sandwiches are mostly sold because ppl love the italian dressing and white bread. It can be a bit frustrating when dealing with people who give attitude over prices ( which are NOT bad at all) we DO have a .60 cent fee for credit transactions. We do get busy in our lunch hours!! (11:30am-1:30pm) sometimes there is a long line. Bare with us. It is a small business. Kitchen is not big. Only one cashier, one sandwich maker, & one sending or calling out orders. But Im the only one to checl reviews here!! So if any of you guys have any suggestions, questions or concers!! Msg me!! Ill sure will talk to the boss about it. :)

  • Grason S.

The prices were pretty cheap and the sandwiches were good until I lost my appetite due to noticing small cockroaches roaming about inside (also dead ones that haven't been cleaned up). They have an 'A' rating but once you sit down you notice that it's very unclean.

I've been coming to this place my entire life and love the sandwiches but the girl who works the register needs some training. I placed a phone order so I wouldn't have to wait and somehow get stuck waiting because she doesn't know what she is doing. Then she rolls her eyes at the woman she is ringing up when she clearly can comprehend how to ring up a meal. I am a frequent patron of this place but maybe it's time to find a new employee. It wasn't even worth waiting for my sandwich today.

  • Miranda M.

For the $1.89 (plus or minus a few cents) the Jr. ham sub always fills me up. I personally like their bread better than Subway -its soft. They accept credit/debit cards for a small fee. Nothing extravagant but definitely worth it for a cheap filling meal.

  • Jozer909 ..

Best sandwich ever great service. The place is kinda small and not too many employees but its a good place to have lunch i would come back again for sure

NICE TASTY CHEAP EATS $1.69 for a 6" junior sandwich on really tasty bread. only open for lunch. great grab for a lunch break/snack.

  • Karen T.

As a college student, a meal for $1.69 is a godsend. The junior subs, while limited in amount of meat and options, is still enough to get me full and an amazing deal all around. The other regular sandwiches here are really good and cheap as well! I recommend the Monterey Chicken Sandwich (chicken, bacon, ranch) if you're looking for a sandwich with more than one millimeter of meat in it. I haven't had a bad experience with a sandwich here yet and even if I did, it's hard to complain when the deals are this good. HOWEVER...I have had one bad experience with the service. As of the date of this review, the girl that a few other people have mentioned in the reviews still works here. She has light blue eyes and you will know her when you see her because her presence is just emotionless and uncomfortable. I can usually put up with a bad attitude, but she just completely messed up my order. I went there with my bf and our friend today. My bf ordered a Monterey Chicken sandwich...he got a Turkey Bacon Avocado sandwich. I ordered a Meatball Pepperoni...and I got a French Dip...with no dip! Luckily, our friend got his order all right, which was also a French Dip, so I got to share some of his dip. We waited for a long time to get our order too, but since we got it to go we didn't really think to check the sandwiches before we left the restaurant. Don't get me wrong, the sandwiches were still delicious, but I would prefer to get the sandwich I actually ordered! I would definitely come back here again just for the other times of good service I've had and the great sandwiches, though. TL;DR: 4 stars for awesome cheap sandwiches, -1 star for scary girl.

  • Sam L.

I have been a loyal MyHero customer for almost a decade. I fell in love with their junior subs in high school. I think what makes these cheap sandwiches so satisfying is the delicious bread. It is so good. Yeah, the meat isn't very high quality, but the sandwich as a whole is still quite tasty. Customer service isn't stellar, but who cares? You are there to eat a cheap sandwich, not make a new friend.

    (4)
  • Ellie K.

I called in an order to avoid having to wait for a long time. My beef dip was not ready. Having to wait twenty additional minutes for a beef dip (not counting the twenty minute drive after ordering) is ridiculous. The sandwich was not even that good.

  • John D.

This is a fantastic family-owned sub shop with the best subs I have ever had. Everytime I am in the area I try to stop here. The prices are great and they have student discounts. A footlong w/ chips and drink will run around $7. I recommend the turkey but anything is great. The break and the Italian dressing they use is the best!

    (5)
  • Patrick L.

A good place if you want a quick lunch and don't want to spend too much. The six inch sandwiches are $1.69 if I remember correctly. There isn't too much meat in that so I usually ask for extra meat which costs 75 cents more. I usually get the pastrami and it tastes pretty good for what you pay.

  • Christine N.

Closed Sundays! I used to go here for their $1.25 Subs a couple years back when I was still an undergrad. I was in love with their bread and how they created each sub to perfection and it still cost less than $2 per meal. Arrrggggghhh!! Why can't you exist where I live now?!

    (4)
  • Kathy V.

This is my all time favorite sub place. I think the thing that keeps bringing be back is there bread. They order it from this bakery in Mira Loma called Galassos I tried calling them to order the bread myself, but they only sell to businesses :( This is the only place in Riverside where you can get a 6 inch sub for 1.49, ham, pastrami, turkey, or plain cheese. Unlimited refills on drinks. They also have raspberry iced tea, but you have to ask for it behind the counter. The decor - It's very old school and new school coca cola memorabilia. They also give student discount, so show your ID.

  • Colt B.

This place rocks, price vs. value is a no brainer. Get the Stuffer if you like a meaty, MEATY sub, only thing I order. The rolls they use for the subs are so soft and fluffy but hold the sandwich all together perfectly. They beat SUBWAY hands down!!!

  • Beth F.

I love sandwiches. I love sandwiches so much, I could easily eat them every day and not get bored. I LOVE sandwich shops, but I'm picky. I hate lettuce. I hate mustard. I hate oil and vinegar. Here, I feel like it's easy to get EXACTLY what you want, for a price you want to pay. Want the $1.69 junior sub, but want more than two slices of meat? Pay a little more for extra meat. Don't want your sub weighed down by toppings and toppings, but not sure what does and doesn't already come on the sub? Easy: lettuce, cheese, meat, tomato, mayo and Italian dressing. Done. Anything else, you ask for. The sandwiches here are just so deliciously simple, yet they have all these different creations and customizable options. I love this place! The bread is delicious. I like soft, chewy, just baked bread. To the man complaining that the bread isn't "artisan" enough for his taste: maybe you should take a step back and remember than you're in a little hole-in-the-wall shop who's specialty is their $1.69 junior sub. That being said: if you ordered the JUNIOR SUB and are complaining about the amount of meat, here's a suggestion: next time, don't be cheap if you like a lot of meat. You get what you pay for. I, for one, DO like a lot of meat on my sandwiches, typically. But the junior sub, with its two slices, is delicious and filling, somehow. It just tastes good! The service is fine. I didn't encounter the girl that other reviewers mentioned, but the man (I'm assuming owner) wasn't very friendly. He wasn't rude of UNfriendly, just not over the top bubbly friendly. I don't mind. I was getting my meal to-go anyways, and again, what do you expect? This isn't a 5 star sit down restaurant, so you won't be receiving 5 star sit down treatment, but does it matter? When I'm paying less than $5 for enough food for lunch and dinner, I think not.

Good food super cheap what more do u want? You can even bring your own drinks in :) lots of coke stuff for sale that I don't get... even a couple of old nonworking or unplugged games for tables... multiple meats piled together of your choice... lots of interesting aspects to this place...

I come here whenever I get the chance to i could eat here any day any time unfortunately they close when I get off work... My favorite spot of all sandwich shops forget Subway and Quiznos those commercial shops garbage compared to My Hero.

  • Helen H.

This update is based on the girl at the counter, not the deliciousness of the food. Seriously though, that girl needs to be fired, retrained, or thrown in the back somewhere where she does not need to deal with customers. No smile..blank stare.. and emotionless. Maybe that's her face, but uh, her face isn't meant for customer service. Just looked like she got her lunch meat in a wad. I was seriously scared that she was going to spit into my sandwich :(

  • Eldine M.

This is my boyfriend's absolute favorite place to eat. He always gets the ham jr. sub and states that he's "found perfection" in a sub. So after almost 6 months of dating, I try My Hero and get the turkey jr. I have to say I was very surprised at how yummy it was. The bread is awesome and you just can't beat the price of $1.69 for a 6" Jr. sub. If you're in the UCR area give it a try.

HANDS DOWN- THE Best bang for your buck literally! Tastiest sandwich by far! all for $1.69 cant lose! :D

  • Maria P.

Good for the price and way better than subway. Costumer service is kinda weird and the service is pretty quick. I noticed that their bacon is crispy and not that microwavable crap you get at other sandwich shops so that's a plus. This is my 2nd choice if I don't have time from work to make the trip to Delia's. Overall this place is A OK.

  • Jeff H.

Hands down, the best sandwich shop I've been to in Riverside. Better than subway, quiznos, and d'elia's grinders off University. I've had about almost every sandwich from them, and all of them, are tasty, cheap and filling. My favorite sandwich shop... Would come back.

  • Daphne V.

Great deli sandwiches for $1.69. Most would think "$1.69..must not be good," BUT they're sandwiches are super delicious and the meat and cheese are freshly cut. Only downfall and reason why they lost a star is because they charge when customers pay with a credit card. Boo! However, I would still recommend eating here to anyone!

First, let me tell you I hate paying for sandwiches. Places like Subway, Quiznos , etc. They make absolutely no sense to me. So I'm going to pay $5 for something that I could make at home, and make better and cheaper? No way. And then my then-boyfriend, now-husband brought me to My Hero. I had lived in Riverside, and down the street from this place for almost 8 years. I drove past it every time I went to Stater Bros or coming home from L.A. and totally ignored it. It was completely missable. Now I regret it. I personally love their hot meatball subs. My husband always goes for their 6" turkey. They are super delicious, and I always make sure to grab a little of the lettuce that falls out as their vinegar and oil dressing is to die for. It is a great Mom-and-Pop store with tons of Coke memorabilia that you can actually buy from them. Sub meal deals come with a bag of chips and a soda. They are a bit on the expensive side, but definitely cheaper than subway (which is now across the street). Service is always prompt, food arrives quickly, and is always delicious. I have never been disappointed by this place. The down side? They close early and aren't open on the weekends. If you want to enjoy their subs you're going to have to make time in the middle of your day and go.

I would always pass this place by and see their advertisement for their $1.69 subs. So one day, I decided to finally go in there and try it. Surprisingly, the sub was good. Some of the previous reviews stated the bread is bad, but I think it's pretty good. However, you do get what you pay for. They only put like one slice of meat and th rest is lettuce, mayo, the usuals in a sub sandwich. But for a $1.69 6-inch sandwich, you really can't complain. I've tried the other subs; I had a 6-inch turkey bacon avocado and that was pretty good for $3.50. Of course, they put more meat considering it is a higher priced sandwich. In addition, I have also tried their mac and cheese. Last time I went, it was a $1.25; maybe it went up a little bit. Anyways the mac and cheese is served in a pretty big cup. You would need to add salt to it though, the mac and cheese is bland without salt. So yeah! When I come here, I usually get a 6-inch turkey sub and mac and cheese. Super cheap lunch that will fill you up. Plus, its simply just good. The establishment itself is very casual, with a lot of vintage memorabilia. Highly recommend for a good sub.

I used to come here all the time in college. It is a must for anybody whos budget includes alcohol as its primary expense. That is because you can get a meal for under $2.This frees up your alcohol expense. I remember getting a lunch special for around $2. It included a drink and a sandwich. Are you kidding me! The dressing and bread is what makes the sandwich. The bread has a nice chewiness to it. You cant beat the value. They dont use a lot of meat but honestly they can get away with it because of the bread and dressing. fIt is no surprise that this place is popular with UC Riverside students The decor inside used to be Coca Cola relics. I don't know what the would do to their Coke but it was better than the Coke I have had at any other place. Not kidding. It tasted like it had more syrup than usual.

this place is awesome. stopped by again today for lunch so i thought i should yelp about it. i have been coming to this place long before yelp or before i was even on the internet. I LOVE MY HERO SUBs. it's simple but the taste is perfect. I think they make their own bread and I vote their bread #1 in the city. their prices are more than fair and they always treat their customers like family. this is a food stop i can trust and i recomend MY HERO SUBs to everyone looking for a good sandwhich and great deals my only problem is their closed on sundays but im not complaing they all deserve a day off, especially after serving our community so well during the week

I had the junior sub for 1.69, ham. It was good for a small meal when you don't want a huge burrito or something. Good bread, fast service. Good food at an excellent price gets five stars from me.

I have always felt that Subway has played a part in the decline of society. Now don't get me wrong, I too at times have to make a quick stop for a $5 dollar footlong. However, when given the choice between an industrialized, measured out sandwich with may too many choices, I always go for the small mom and pop sub shop. My Hero is that place I don't need to see you make my sandwich and frankly, I don't make sandwiches all day, I will leave it up to the expert to decide what works best. I will point you in a general direction and you sandwich maker just run with and make it good. My Hero has done this on several occasions and at a fair price. It's no $5 dollar footlong but the little extra charge is definitely worth the price. Plus you don't have to stand in line after the guy who is ordering 20 different sandwiches, each as unique and important as the person ordering it. It's a sandwich, its good just eat it and shut the (Just took another bite out of my chicken parmesan sandwich, dripping with melted cheese) up. Next time you're in the university area of Riverside head on down to My Hero. Good sandwiches, fair prices and if you're a student, you get some kind of discount (it applies to another group of people as well, I just don't remember because it's not me).

hm-hm-hm gooood. food: I got a #1 combo deal with a chicken parmesan. It was worth every penny. Not too much sauce, lots of melted cheesy goodness, and the bread smelled so good. So delicious. Also, they're not kidding when they say the drink is large. It should be called an extra large. Service: I don't know if they fired the girl mentioned in the reviews or people expected to be waited on hand and foot but I didn't have any problems with the service, The girl at the counter was friendly enough. This isn't a five-star restaurant or anything so I get a bit annoyed when people complain that the cashier didn't smile or seem too enthusiastic. Verdict: It's a lot of delicious bang for your buck. I'm definitely coming back.

Really great subs but I hope the owner reads these reviews because as another reviewer stated, the girl who works the register is ridiculously unfriendly! Beware of the short overweight girl with the pretty blue eyes, the eyes deceive you! Such an uncomfortable atmosphere because of her attitude, life's not that bad...at least you have a job! Maybe she's family of the owner but if you replaced her with a friendly smile, a warm greeting and at least one "thank you", your business will improve.

I didn't know if this place was a chain because I saw so many on yelp, but this one is my fav because of its proximity to UCR and it's low priced jr subs at $1.69 or something. They've even got Wheat bread too. Sometimes they'll run out of their bread in which case you might as well run out the door too. No offense to them. I usually get two jr with mustard and peperoncini. I bought one full priced regular sub and well let's just say that a good thing shouldn't be changed, so back to strictly jr subs for me. The large ones just didn't seem justified for their price. This might kill them as a business but I once asked the secret to their delicious bread. The answer... It's the bread from Sam's Club specifically, not WALMart but Sam's Club. Shh

Yummy Had the lunch special today, 6" + antipasto salad and drink. Salad was big and tasty. Bread on turkey sandwich were great. Yay, they have Coke not Pepsi! Coke is a must have for me. I'll be back soon.

**This review is only for the discount subs** My Hero Sub is the perfect spot for a broke college student it was purely price point, they offered a sub with a price that was difficult to pass up. Although it was not the BEST sub or the largest, it was perfect for the amount that was paid. I never actually ordered the larger more full bodied subs (those looked like 4 star quality, but I cannot really give fair commentary).

It's ok...my ex took me because he used to get it when he was younger and loved it and the wait was crazy! For just 2 subs it took 30 mins, and it was so crowded inside we had to sit outside in the sun to wait. But hold on, cause you have to literally come up to the register to ask if your order is ready cause if you're outside you won't hear it. As for the subs....eh. Not bad, not amazing. I personally won't be coming back when there's a subway in front of it, which charges the same for less wait time.

The turkey bacon and avocado sub is very delicious. They use good meats and cheese and the bacon is thick and very flavorful. The prices are good for what you get. I highly recommend this sub place.

I actually really love this place. Been going here since high school and they are still cheap and fast. I think if you're on a budget and looking for good sandwiches, this is an awesome spot.

I miss not going here all the time after I graduated. This place was a savior back then allowing me to eat healthy for a very reasonable price. I usually got a number 2 double roast beef & turkey on wheat ez mayo. So goood.

The specials are pretty cheap, certainly. But there is much less filling in those six-inch specials than if you pay for a "full" sandwich. There is only a hint of meat and veggie; the specials are mostly bread and mayo. For sandwiches with more than one layer of meat, My Hero's prices are the same as most other sandwich shops. The bread is pretty lame. I like crusty bread with a fluffy interior. My Hero uses very cheap bread that is dense and undercooked. By dense, I don't mean hard, I mean doughy. If you like soft, salty bread, with a squishy crust, then you're good to go. If you are a fan of artisan bread with an airy, bubbly interior, don't even bother walking in the door. My Hero's BBQ chicken and BBQ beef sandwiches are okay for the price. The BBQ smell hits you right when you walk inside, and it smells great. The only problem is that not-so-hot bread, and the fact that the BBQ sauce is cloyingly sweet. If you dump hot sauce on it, it's actually not too bad. If you want a great value, huge sub sandwich, head up Blaine Street and visit Aloha Pizza. Awesome sandwiches, similar prices, and far, far superior ingredients.

I rarely miss my old UCR days. No, let me clarify. I rarely miss RIVERSIDE. However, I often miss My Hero! This was my absolute favorite lunch place (other than pho), and the old sorority sisters and I used to frequent this place quite often. I even had a boyfriend at one point in time who wanted to eat here every day for lunch for like, a month straight (yes, EVERY day I kid you not! Well, except for when they were closed on Sunday) They get freshly baked bread daily (best bread ever!), and every sandwich I ever had was delicious! The best were definitely the Turkey Bacon Avocado, the Stuffer, and the Pastrami. I also loved the Italian dressing they put on the sandwiches, and the owner is often generous with the meat when he makes the sandwiches (or was that just because he saw me every day for a month and at least once a week after that?). Either way, I was never disappointed. Yes, the decor is definitely retro with every type of Coca-Cola or Pepsi memorabilia you could think of (including pants...wtf?), and before I left Riverside they were even selling jewelry and other antique (or handmade?) items. If I ever come back to Riverside, I am definitely coming here first thing!!

I love the Turkey Bacon & Avadcado (TBA) here. It's soo good! And it's like the only thing I actually get. I guess I'm a fat-ass because I guess I'm a petite girl, but I like to get the 12 inch sub instead of the 6 inch.. but yes, it's really good!! I don't normally eat IN the restaurant.. while I lived in Riverside, I ordered in, and then took my order to go. But yeah, the restaurant itself is kinda small but it's not too too small. At the entrance, they also sell random items like purses and earrings. I've never seen anyone buy any of those though, but it's amusing to look at. And everytime I go in the store, they always seem to play the same music that sounds like elevator music lol. I guess my only complaint is that one of the employees here always look like she hates her job when she takes my order. She's taken my order a few times and I've never seen a smile out of her face at all! Gosh, can you look happy for once? But yeah... I still like this place despite that lol. They do accept credit card, but if you use it, they charge you something cents... so it's better to bring cash.

  • Michael Y.

soo cheap. geeeze. 6 inch pastrami ,ham, or turkey sandwich for 1.69 thats a cheap as it gets. just bring cash. (.50 charge for card) havent gotten anything else on their menu yet but that is the good enough reason for me to go.

So I've been trying to try to this place out since forever! But they're always closed when I want a sandwich or a just miss them. The hours aren't convenient to me (of which I am not convenient to anyone so its not saying much) but I finally got in here and I ordered my favorite sandwich of all time - BLT with avocado. I forgot to say no mayo. The mayo was too much. I felt like they must've spilled half the bottle on my bread. Also, the bread choices are so limited for a sandwich shop. I tend to like my breads chewy with a thick crunchy crust - they did not have it here. And the avocado (though a lover I may be) was too much too. Maybe it was the mayo that made the avocado go crazy but that was too much grease for me. The boyfriend says to give the place another try so I will. Whenever they're open when I'm in town again. Otherwise... I thought the sandwiches were meh but HUGE.

Good food at affordable prices. I was able to get a six inch sub combo for under $6. Can't beat that! I had the Turkey, Avocado & Bacon sub. I thought the ingredients were all fresh, especially the bread. I'd go back just to have that bread again.

I always crave their ham sandwhich. It's a simple sandwhich, but it tastes soooooo good!

When I went to UCR, I went to this place at least once a week. It is absolutely the best sandwich shop in Riverside, located just down the street from the UV and Grand Marc, across from Copper Canyon. They may have raised their prices, but a junior sub (6'' cheese, turkey, or ham) used to be only $1.25, which is perfect for poor, starving college students. Like the other reviews say, the Turkey Bacon Avocado here is amazing. The bread is soft and chewy (which I like) and they put Italian dressing on all the cold subs. If I'm ever in town again, I'll be sure to stop by here.

I get the $1.69 sub when I'm here. Because really that is plenty of food. It is a very basic sub but the bread is great, and it has lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It is a simple comfort sandwich like you would throw together on your own kitchen counter, but cant make at home for that price. Great cute little place

  • I I.

Used to go here often for the dollar subs. They may not longer offer this anymore of it is just over a buck, but I used to get "one of each meat" and stuff myself for $3. It was thin layer of meat and cheese, but awesome for a broke college student. Staff is real nice and they have lots of old Coke memorabilia.

For less than $2 you can get a decent sandwich. It's pretty lacking in the meat, cheese, and lettuce department, but seriously, two bucks?! You get food for cheap.

I don't get all of the great reviews for this place at all. We came here on a weekday and ordered two 6" veggie subs. The description sounded promising with avocado, tomato etc. so we were really excited but when they came out we both looked at each other and knew these sandwiches were a rip off. First off, 95% of the sandwich was bread with a very thin layer of ingredients. The bread is dry and thick with little flavor and they had the nerve to charge 25 cents for a cup of ice. To top off the horrible taste and value of the sandwiches, we kept finding pieces of bacon in our subs (which is disgusting since we are vegetarians). I really don't understand why anyone thinks this place is a good value because compared to Subway it's a rip off. For a few more bucks you can eat at Subway and get a decent sized sandwich that is actually fair with toppings (and they have good bread). This place is also dirty looking and the employees are not at all friendly or welcoming. Overall, one of the worst eateries I have ever been to.

need a say more "fresh yummy sandwich made how u like it for under 2 bucks!!! great place great food, good bargain for their small sandwich (not so small) not too mention their bread is so soft! In addition they make a yummy antipasto salad for under 5 bucks! way better then any chain sandwich!

Ordered the BLT, brought it home and never felt so disgusted in my life. Discovered what I really ordered was a sandwich with a bottle of mayo inside. Never coming back here again.

I'm probably a little biased here, but I heart this place. I've been a My Hero's fan ever since I attended UC Riverside years ago, and I still come here every chance I get. I'M ADDICTED. Granted I've never ordered anything other than a Jr. Turkey Sub, but what else do you need?? Thin slices of turkey and provolone, veg, and Italian dressing on soft, crusty bread. I ain't saying this is the most sophisticated sandwich, b/c it definitely is not. If you're looking for that go elsewhere, and if you're going to order something other than the Jr. Sub, well, I have no idea what that'll taste like.... My Hero's = simplicity at its best.

i go to UCR, and this place is literally 2 blocks away from the school and a block from the freeway, so it's very accessible when i am in a hurry to class and hungry. i always get the $1.69 cheese sub on the wheat bread. it is a good price and totally simple- a generous portion of provolone cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, and a squirt of italian dressing. the bread is always soft and chewy, the cheese is very fresh, and i love the way the veggies get with the dressing on them. i honestly come here like 3 times a week when i am in school and it never fails as being a consistent cheap place to fill my stomach before class. dont expect some fancy schmancy type of sandwich on artisan bread, because you wont get it. go here for a really simple sandwich that has been made the same way since 1986.

  • Andrew P.

I love the Turkey Bacon Avocado Sandwich here. Especially with the 10% UCR student discount, or the discount after 3:00 PM where all 12'' subs are 4.50. Comes to be about 5 bucks for a bomb sub. The club sandwich here is also really good. They tend to use a lot of mayo here, but I don't mind, you can usually request to have less mayo or none at all. Either way, they have subs to fit all your taste buds, and budgets. Definitely a place I'm gonna miss when I graduate/move from Riverside. The only downer here is that this place closes around 6...too early for most.

obviously you are not going to find the tastiest sandwiches here but the prices cannot be beat especially for all the near by college students

After finishing UCR, I really missed this place. I would still drive back 30 miles once in a while to catch these sandwich deals. Extremely great service, family owned place and great tasting subs! The prices are unbeatable, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu... A++++! It's totally worth a shot for such low priced sandwiches... YUM!

We visit my old college grounds by starting with the best sandwich shop for a college students' buck. The one sandwich I always got was the turkey bacon avocado. Still the best TBA I've ever had to this very day. There are only 2 workers so the wait may vary but it's worth it. The decor is very retro and has a bit of the "Happy Days" vibe which is always a good thing.

Pass this place so many times going to UCR that I finally decided to eat here the last year of college. I usually ordered the same as Ed L which is the Turkey Bacon Avocado or Turkey Avocado. Both are delicious. The ambiance is simple and retro. Service is fairly quick. Great place to eat to get away from the busy-ness of the UV area.
