Where to eat with friend on a weeknight? Sushi-ya! All you can eat sushi for $25 or so. Smallllllllll place. Or at least it was small to me, but I'm a very tall white girl with a lil extra cushion. We squeezed in at the only available seats, which were at the sushi bar. Cute old lady is not so friendly but quite entertaining. Sushi guys are nice and good at their job. We started with a Jasmine hand roll - very dericious and I am craving one right now. The sushi (yellow-tail, tuna, white tuna) was pretty darn good. The mixed tempura was as expected. The rolls we ordered on our second round were HUGE and we had to take deep breaths and fight on to finish them. My friend threatened me that the old lady would charge us more if we didn't finish all our food (there's also a threat about leaving your rice ball on the plate - vicious). We finally finished and had to waddle around the neighborhood for a bit before squishing our fish and rice filled bodies back into the car. Next time I have a sushi craving I'm coming here. Minus one star only because it's small and I couldn't see the dang TV and had to eat like a T-Rex at the sushi bar.

I'm giving it 4 stars, in reality, I would say a 3.5 if we take everything into consideration. I don't know what others want from an AYCE, but here are my thoughts. I've had good, bad, and great sushi before. I've also had AYCE sushi and most are either good to decent. This lies a cut above good sushi. Went here for lunch on a Thursday with 6 people so the fish was pretty good. Pros: Huge pieces of sushi. Great rolls. Cons: Crab roll - made with fake crab that Asians use for hot pot. Price for lunch is $22, so you better get your money's worth!! - Good sushi: Ono, unagi, jasmine roll, spider roll, halibut, salmon - Great, especially for AYCE: red snapper (my fav), halibut, yellowtail, albacore, mackerel. Lobster roll (LOL I think they use crawfish meat) So take what you want out of it. I would repeat.

So for valentine's day my boyfriend took me here for lunch. I've been here a few times with some excoworkers. Anywho, the place smells like wet towel. The green ice tea tastes like grass water. Sashmi tastes like it was just thawed from the freezer. The soft shelled crab tastes like old oil. The baked mussels were decent tasting. They cut it in half for you which I thought was cool. I would recommend the ham & cheese crossiant next door at the donut store.

It's business time, baby. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about... It's been at least 2 years since I've eaten here, daddy has come back to make up for lost time. ;-) Enter: Heart Attack X2 I brought my gal here for some grub. We ordered a shit load of food including some tasty Japanese beer. The tab was reasonable, we ate like fucking savages and afterwords we put babies on spikes. Grawr! This is the best sushi around, and especially in Pasadena. I would rank A'float Sushi in old town a distant second. Wokano--get the fuck out of my face with that shit. Sushiya will now and always be my/our number one choice for fresh sushi in Pasadena. *shakes fists in defiance aganst all other sushi establishments* I'm aware of the all you can eat part. We did not partake. Instead we ordered a lot of fish from the 50% off menu. The beer was also half price. I almost forgot my favorite picks. 1. Heart Attack Rolls (deep fried jalapeno tuna goodness!) 2. Firecraker Roll (scallop w/ avocado and special sauce) 3.Octopus Rolls (Take a wild guess ) 4. Unagi Rolls (fresh water eel) 5. Spicy Tuna Rolls (spicy tuna rolls)

If you're in the area and craving some sushi, this is the place to go! Service is quick and friendly, there's free parking, and the sushi is amazing! My friend and I ordered the firecracker, rainbow roll and the spicy crunch roll. All three were terrific! Add some spicy mayo, and you'll be golden. They have AYCE but we opted for a la carte since we weren't too hungry that evening. Otherwise, they had a lot of other options as far as appetizers and udon. They even have a sushi burrito! I'll definitely be back to try different rolls!

This sushi spot by far is the best. The hospitality was great here. The rolls are big and very tasty. Overall I give this place a five star. I highly recommend it to everyone. Price is reasonable and the service is great Plus they also have a delivery service now. Happy tummy

Was around the area and wanted ayce sushi. The Calamari was wonderful. Not hard to bite, soft and not drenched in oil and seasoning. Shrimp tempura and tuna rolls were delicious. Rolls were a bit loose, but it still tastes good. Not too much variety like... (Sushi damu ) but hey, not gunna complain as the taste was yum. There's only one big chef it seemed today(Thursday), and ayce is only one hour. The wait time was about 15 minutes, and then the food kept us busy and just kept coming. We left 20 minutes left on the time and stopped after round one. Didn't notice much desserts other than a candy bowl sitting by the door in the shop. I am not sure if I'll come again, but it was a nice experience. This place is one of those "it was good but ehh" Two people, 25.95 per person. ended d up with a 56$ bill, ordered about seven items and got full. They have interesting rules to if there's rice left, they'll charge "to-go" price. There was kinda lots of rice. I left full so ... Good enough. I guess. (:

EXCELLENT and they are open fridY and Saturdays despite another review. We absolutely loved this place. We are avid sushi eaters and are quite picky. Sushi was excellent, fresh, and tasty. The bento box was equally as good. To top it off our service was outstanding. They were short handed but one wouldn't know it. Our food arrived quickly. The owner was even helping out with bringing the food out. She was going around to all the customers ensuring everyone was taken care of. I can't say enough about this place. In addition to the above the green tea ice cream (yum) is complimentary! We are not from the area and truly lucked out with this pick. We will definitely come bAck agAin when in town.

One of my favorite places for sushi. The rice is amazing.. The sushi pieces are generous .. And the home like atmosphere of the owner and her son is like no other. Whenever I come to Pasadena this is an absolute must stop!!

Small, cozy spot. From the outside seems a bit old, but inside is nice! They have AYCE option for $25.95. The owner is super friendly and funny. She's Japanese and likes to chat.. Like other people said! I really suggest you the rolls. Especially the Jasmine roll and the crunchy! They were tasty. Sushi is good, but not outstanding. I think they put too much rice. But I prefer rolls, so... :) The food came out fresh.. and fast. Try the tempura!! Parking is available. I will come back! Thanks again yelpers for letting me find this place!

AYCE! Yes! But ONE hour literally ONE hour time. They will time you like any other place but if they are busy oh well. And if they run out of rice and you have to wait for it to cook then oh well it goes into your hour!! Which is BS!! But oh yes I did let them know I was going to order more even tho it's not my fault they ran out of rice. OH and to even make it worse they only have one sushi chef!! So it took longer for him to make all those rolls and stuff for us and other guest.. YES! The sushi is GOOD! Don't get me wrong. But they do put way to much rice. Maybe that is the problem. You try to fill us up with rice so we don't order more but then it back fires and you run out of rice and you have nothing to do but stand there. I wonder how you guys are during Friday nights since you are open late. (Which I read on Yelp!) Everything was great service was great. I don't know if the waitress was their kid but she was on point!! And the delivery guy! A young boy maybe 13. Does he drive or what? Cause it is a 3 miles radius. But he is on point also. Getting the order and delivering it. The place is small can't really have a big group of more than ten or you will wait. Next door is the donut and massage place. Small Parking you share with La Estrella also.

The main reason I ever went here was for the all you can eat option because the service wasn't all that great. Recently went in and was told they no longer had this.

Not bad! I was worried because there were many recent one-star reviews but I decided why not. I'm glad I tried! I went around 8 o'clock on a tuesday during dinner and the place was pretty full. It was small and the sign wasn't even on when we got there but the inside seemed very lively. We just sat down at the corner of the bar but I immediately noticed my seat was dirty. Turns out the seat just hadn't been cleaned yet, so I moved over because another party was supposed to be sitting there as well. The server who was a super sweet older asian lady kept apologizing, which I really appreciated. Right after we got settled the sushi chef got us started right away. We ordered soooo much sushi. I took a picture of our order sheet and my boyfriend and I alone ate about 80 dollars of sushi. For pigs like us, all you can eat is a much better option than going a la carte. I'm glad I found this place. To set things straight, I'm not a sushi expert like most yelpers. I like rolls that are drenched in sweet sauce and spicy mayo as long as they taste good. I'm not someone to be stingy about rice temperature or anything else like that. So when the rainbow roll and the tuna lover's roll came out for our first plate, my hungry boyfriend and I dove into the plate and finished it super quickly. The chef definitely works fast, because our lobster roll and another roll came out while we were still eating the roll. The first bite of our meal was glorious. The fish was flavorful and I couldn't help but awe at the taste after the first bite. I couldn't help but notice how the fish on top of the rolls were poorly attached to the rice. It tasted amazing, but the presentation is part of the game too, you know! My favorite part had to be the nigiri. The salmon melted in my mouth and the albacore was HUGE in proportion to the rice. I wish they had onion bits on top of the albacore but it was still good. I'm a roll person but the nigiri was seriously amazing. Totally considering going back and just ordering a bunch of nigiri. When my meal was done, I thought I was going to go crazy. My stomach was beyond full and I couldn't bother to stand up from my chair for a minute or two. When my check came and I finished the transaction, the asian lady came to me and complimented me about how nice I was with a huge smile on her face. I feel like she might have felt as if she was seeing her own daughter or something but she was seriously the cutest and the sweetest. She was slow with giving service but it's because she tries to make interaction with every customer. The chef was nice too! I didn't get to talk to him or anything but he was generous with giving more ginger and other requests. I noticed a certificate on their wall that thanked them for their 10+ years of service. If a place stays in business for more than ten years, you know they're doing something right. I had a good time! Will be back again :)

My tummy was so satisfied! The sushi was delicious! I ordered delivery (must has $25 minimum) and it arrived in less than an hour! The sushi arrived nice and warm:) I had the BSCR roll, Pasadena special roll ( my favorite), and the Golden Philly roll.

When I walk in the sweet old lady pours my beer without having to order it. The sushi is fresh and the staff is friendly. It's never crowded and it's down the street from my house. The Jasmine roll is tasty and original. I try to hit this spot once a week!

  • Michael K.

The sushi is top notch! Whoever is in charge of picking and managing the fish knows what they are doing. The service is friendly and let's just call it relaxed. Don't be surprised if the sushi chef is lounging at one of the tables reading a book when you enter. That's been the case a few times that we've gone. My favorites are: Salmon roll.... It's simple, incredibly fresh a tasty every time. For me a mark of a good sushi joint is when their simple rolls are great. Hamachi Kama.... Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Don't forget the hidden meat under the cartilage it's the best part! The only thing I haven't liked in 5-10 visits is the fried calamari. It was like little onion rings with no flavor. The place is tiny and parking is limited. Also, they are closed on Saturday.

I love this place. My husband and I always come here when we can. The chef is quick in making our order and it was delicious!' I would totally recommend this place. It's a little small but it's cozy. Our top favorites: Crunch roll Lobster roll Golden Philly roll Pasadena special

I just got my food delivered by an 11 year old. Ok, family business, I get it. But I ordered through Eat24's app. So it was prepaid. He hands me the slip, I sign and say thank you! As I turn to set down the food and reach for my wallet he says, "Um, you still owe us a tip." Excuse me? I tell him, "I'm sorry, but no, I don't OWE you a tip..." And he replies that his boss (probably mom or dad) "requires a tip." You've got to be kidding me. I try to explain as nicely as I can that no one ever 'owes' anyone a tip. I don't 'owe' his boss more money than the food actually costs, and he can't 'require' a tip from anyone. It's not how tipping and the law work. I told him I was about to tip him, but that's MY choice. Now this poor kids all sad and scared looking and says 'ok' and starts to walk away. I stop him and say no I was going to tip anyway, but this is for you. It's your tip and your money. I don't know what the deal was but that was super sketch. The kid isn't even old enough to be working, and it looks like he probably hands all tips over to his mom or dad. I should've gone out to the street and talked to whoever drove him there about this required tip thing. Poor kid. Never ordering from them again, may even have someone look into their business practices. Hope the foods good, I'm about to find out.

4-1/2 stars. Decent and dependable sushi joint. It could get a little pricey depending on what you order, but they have coupons around town and offer some sort of buy one get one free deal. Worth giving it a try. Probably the best rolls in E. Pasadena.

One of our favorite sushi places. The jasmine hand roll, there is nothing else like it. The service is warm and friendly, and the food is consistently delicious. Cheap draft beer too, can't beat it. The only bummer is they aren't open on Friday nights or at all on Saturday, but you can't knock them for that!

Always love me some sushiya!!! Been coming here for years and won't go anywhere else! (Tried, but Jason has me spoiled :) ) We try to go at least twice a month, more if we can! The spicy crunch roll is our current addiction but our ultimate favorite is the golden philly!!! Sweet, salty, creamy, crunchy and delicious!!!

it was pretty good. i wouldnt complain. i would recommend it agaiin. however, the variety would be considered somewhat basic... still the 25$ ayce option is the ONLY way to goo.

Used to come to this place consistently as they had OK fish but interesting rolls. I especially liked the century roll. But I have to agree with the bad customer service reviews... enough that I will not return along with all my co workers! I brought a bunch of them in, probably about 12 people and clearly stated we wanted all you can eat. We were sat down and started to have a good time. After the second round we were waiting for our last rolls. Soon they said our last order was forgotten. When they asked if we still wanted them the other table said no, I hesitated but said yes and the sushi chef looked straight at me and said my time for all you can eat was over!!!! What the...? YOU FORGOT TO MAKE MY ORDER IN TIME! THAT WAS YOUR FAULT NOT MINE! They didn't budge and neither will all of us in never coming back. Was it worth losing 12 customers?!

Beware, bunch of stingy conartists! I came here for lunch on an empty Sunday afternoon. No one else was there, just me and my girlfriend. We asked for the all-you-can-eat menu. This is the first sushi restaurant where they time you for AYCE. You get one hour to finish your meal from the time the waiter takes your order. In my experience, from the many sushi joints I dined at, the restaurant will usually charge for any unfinished sushi. It is no surprise that Sushiya does the same. However, this is the first experience where I have a time limit to eat my food. But wait for it... this is not my main complaint. My gripe is the sneaky way Sushiya charges for unfinished sushi. USUALLY, AYCE sushi places will charge each uneaten piece of sushi the a la carte price. So unfortunately, when the hour hit, we had 6 pieces leftover. So i thought, ok I'll just pay for the uneaten ones, I don't want to force myself and stuff my gut. But noooooo, they do not charge leftovers a la carte price; they switch EVERYTHING we ordered to the a la carte price. How does that even make sense?! We finished 90% of the rolls/negiri in that stupid 1 hour limit. We should only technically owe the leftovers as a la carte. I offered to just finish the rest of the negiri on the spot, so I can just pay the AYCE price. But the stingy owner did not budge; claimed that the instructions were perfectly clear and we ran out of time. The only thing clear was the lame time limit; not changing our entire order to a different price. Besides, we were their only customers there at that time, what's the hurry to kicking us out? So you must be thinking how about the food? All I complain about is their scam to the public. The food here is subpar. Do not worry, I am not biased when it comes to reviewing food. The hamachi was not fresh and leaves an after-taste in my mouth. They also use a shit ton of rice for each nigiri piece. Low blow. Their best dish would be the jasmine handroll. I'll have to admit it was delicious. Everything else, meh. Low quality sashimi. I will usually end my review with a "go try for yourself" phrase, even if i rated a restaurant low. But do not waste your time and money here. Check out the other Japanese restaurants I've reviewed or posted pictures of if you want sushi.

Although the quality of the food is still the same as before the prices have gone pretty high for their AYCE. I don't know of another AYCE place that charges $25.95 for lunch! Also now you can only order twice off the menu. I'm not sure what's going on with the owner but he doesn't seem very friendly anymore and his AYCE menu is getting smaller and smaller. The spider roll is no longer available if you're into that. I've been going there for over 10 years but I'm not going back anymore. You can get much better value at other places with the same quality. AYCE Sushi in West Covina for example. The menu is bigger and they are cheaper for lunch.

The sushi chef had the worst attitude I've ever encountered at a restaurant. The food is barely passable as is, but the scowl and the rude behavior of the chef made me regret coming here at all. He's a bitter dude that seems angry at the world for being stuck at a joint like this. The fish IS NOT fresh; the rice is stale; hot food tastes microwaved; and did I mention the sushi chef is one rude, angry dude. Memo to self: stop already with the AYCE sushi dumps; its just not worth it.

We use to go to Sushiya regularly...but after our last visit we will not be returning again. We arrived for dinner at 6:30PM on a Sunday evening. There were 4 of us in our party and we wanted to do the all you can eat. We sat down and our waitress came and took our drink order. When we told her we wanted to do all you can eat she came back 5 minutes later and told us "The Chef said if you want all you can eat you have to wait 30 minutes because there are NON-all you can eat customers at the sushi bar".....WHAT?!?!? you have got to be kidding me! This was just crazy...who does that? If you cant maintain what your offering in your restaurant maybe you should reconsider it. The funny thing is the party next to us got told the same thing and they got up and left! Horrible customer service!

After many visits to this lil slice of heaven I find myself wondering why I never actually gave them props... So here I am raving and ranting about why everyone should go to sushi ya! Honestly if you luv sushi then this is the best place to get good quality fish for your buck. At 24.99 for lunch and 25.99 for dinner you can indulge yourself (pig out) off the all you can eat sushi menu. Make sure you speak with Jason the owner of the place! he is totally awesome and can chop up some sashimi like no other! The older lady (waitress) can be rude and forget to bring you your drinks even after asking her three times hahah. But it just might be worth the 2.50 tap beer !

AYCE sushi you say? Sign me up! I noticed the chef wasn't giving me the same cuts that he was using for the a la carte customers, but I didn't say anything since I was demolishing their mackerel and tuna supplies. The first time you get AYCE it could be a little hostile since you only have an hour to pig out once your first order is given to you. After coming back numerous times the "hour" seems to get extended, and the cuts of fish get better once they see you as a regular. Last week, Jason, the sushi chef hooked me up with some toro tuna which can run up to $20 for a sashimi order. What to get: JASMINE HAND ROLL(ALL CAPS IMPORTANT) Heart Attack roll (a jalapeno stuffed with spicy tuna and deep fried in tempura batter with a sweet and spicy mayo drizzle my nizzle) Suhsi Ya Roll (a maki roll with tuna, salmon, and a shrimp tempura, wrapped in white soy paper) Vegetable tempura is my "dessert"

Our favorite Sushi spot in Pasadena. I absolutely love their deep fried California roll, yum! Small place with just a few tables but the service is always friendly and the food is always good. My only regret is that they're not open for Dinner on Friday or Saturday but it makes a great date night during the week.

Love this place for its all you can eat sushi and like other reviews state you only have an hr time to eat, but honestly they are pretty good about it, and the price is pretty good 21.95 for lunch - 24.95 for dinner. The chefs are pretty cool and the sushi I wont say is the best but still pretty damn good. My favorite thing to get here is the Dragon Roll.

  • Rajiv S.

I read the reviews and I had to come considering how many rave about it. Unfortunately, my experience here was terrible. The fish wasn't fresh and the rolls are your usual fare. But what really floored me was when I found a hair on my rainbow roll and mentioned it to the sushi chef. Rather than make another roll (or make any effort at all), he simply pulled the one piece with the hair on it off the plate leaving the rest to finish. I don't know about you, but I don't want to eat a roll of raw fish that has hair on it. Really tacky, rude, and unhygienic. Makes me wonder if they give the same careless attitude with preparing their fish and food. Not the things I like to wonder about when I go to a sushi place. Never again.

My favorite place for AYCE sushi despite their strange hours (not opened Friday for dinner/closed on Sat - would recommend that you call the place for hours just in case) & small parking lot. I would come more often except my stomach can only handle AYCE madness once every 3 months. For the best experience, get there early/when it opens so you can sit at the sushi bar! The service is spotty and most of the time, there is only 1 person working, so if you sit at the bar, you can order directly from the sushi chefs & spend more time eating vs. waiting for your food. This place has the most consistent fish quality in terms of freshness (vs. other sushi places around the area) and the best fish-rice ratio roll (and my personal favorite) is the Sushi Ya roll -Salmon, tuna, crab, & tempura shrimp with a bit of rice wrapped in soy paper.

This is a small family owned Sushi spot. He uses high quality fish. Everything is well made. It's my favorite place in Pasadena, hands down. I often use the all you can eat option as I do enjoy making a bit of a pig of myself when I go there. Can you find better ambiance elsewhere? Sure. Is this like Matsuhisa or Nobu? The fish is, the prices are not. It's a GREAT spot.

The Tbrothers love this place and I understand why--I think we came here 3 times in one week. All you can eat, that's right ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT sushi that is fun and affordable (My max was about 6 whole rolls and it was painful!). Sit at the bar for the best service from J and S. At least once, get the 151 Roll, its tasty, ON FIRE, and fun for all guests involved. I also recommend the Yellowtail and Salmon sashimi. Mackerel, like Fel says, can be a little on the fishier side. Also Kenny's fav, Salmon Skin handroll, no carrot, add avocado. Your Soon To Be King.

I've passed by this place a million times, no joke. I've never seen anyone enter or leave this place so I thought it was deserted or actually closed down. One day while getting Mexican food at La Estrella, which is practically next door, I looked up Sushiya to see if it was still in business-- Mostly good reviews. My boyfriend returned to the car and I told him, "Hey, apparently that sushi place is really good." He looks over, "What?! Are you serious? No way..." We come back about two weeks later to try the place out. I wanted to prove my boyfriend wrong. He's Japanese, so I guess you can say he knows his sushi. My boyfriend had a complete change of heart when we entered the restaurant. He loved all of the sushi we got and the staff were very nice and fast. I loved their salmon sashimi. It was so savory. I wanted to keep ordering it but didn't want to seem crazy.. maybe I should have gone for the AYCE. I also liked that the place was cozy and wasn't filled with people. Every now and then when we crave sushi, this place is the first place that comes to our minds. Quite disappointed that it is closed on Saturdays. But still delicious! Try it out. .... Now I'm hungry.

Fantastic sushi! They have beer on tap for $2. The sushi is fresh and good. My husband and I can go here on a date for under $30. It doesn't have great ambiance, but if you are looking for very good sushi and a fair price... AND $2 beer- this is your place!

NEWSFLASH!!!! Apparently, they are no longer AYCE......prices seem reduced, but still....the Magic has left the building.

This place is pretty standard for a hole-in-the-wall sushi place. Came for lunch and sat near the air conditioner on the wall, and drops of water kept falling on my arm throughout lunch -- not the most enjoyable occurrence. The tempura vegetables were really tasty! We ordered a caterpillar roll and a tiger roll and both were pretty good. A lot of reviews have commented on the quality of the AYCE fish. The fish we ordered seemed to be of a fairly good quality, but we didn't order a significant amount of raw-fish-based sushi (nor did we do AYCE) so I can't say for sure. The waitress we had was a little clueless and apathetic, but overall showed up when we needed her and food came out promptly. I was a bit concerned by the lack of a health-inspector grade (that we could find), but no sickness was incurred, so I'm going to just assume everything was fairly clean to keep my sanity in tact. Overall, I would probably go back (but maybe only after scouting for that health grade -- am I blind or something?!) for a quick, cheap sushi lunch.

They've raised the price and limited the restaurant hours. All you can eat is now $24 for lunch and $26 for dinner I think. Still doesn't open on Saturdays and no more dinner on Fridays. I wonder how they stay in business. Either they make enough or they're not making much at all. \= Food is still good although now I will only go if I MUST, which is... all the time. Anyone who is a sushi chef and single, PM me, maybe we can get married. Girls not totally discouraged either.

This place has definitely changed from when I used to go years ago, and not for the better. This used to be one of THE spots I would go to, not because they had top quality fish or anything, but it was always above average in tastes, with cheap beers and a cute little Japanese lady who was a staple of that place. But recently, when I went there to collect on a free dinner owed to me by my cousin, the experience was less than great. First off, the lady wasn't there and it leads me to think that the place has changed management, but I cannot confirm this. If this is true, that might be why this place has gone down in my eyes. The sushi was subpar and some of them seemed too drenched in sauce. Maybe my tastes have changed since college when I used to come here, but some of them were very hard to stomach. The extra rice they put into their sushi definitely didn't help. Service was also no good either. Maybe they're new, but they had a hard time tending to our table of 8, in a restaurant that could probably seat 25 at max and for a while there we were pretty much the only customers there! Slow to get waters when we asked, couldn't remember some of our other orders, and didn't even know what they were bringing out to us when we asked! We were less than pleased. The reasons why this is a 3 star instead of a 2 is because the Jasmine Hand Roll was still good, sushi still edible, and the beer still cheap. Otherwise, if this dinner weren't on my cousin's dime I would've felt incredibly ripped off (though I do feel bad for her..) Farewell, Sushi Ya, I probably won't see you again.

I was hungry for sushi today and loved the idea of AYCE. Walked in, only 2 other people in this tiny place (that was ok) and was not familiar with the AYCE menu. So the waiter gave me a menu and I started ordering off it. Salmon sushi first then a BSCR and a baked Salmon roll. While that was baking I asked the chef about something on the menu, only to find out if was an al la carte menu per piece i was ordering off of, not the AYCE menu.. So I didn't get the baked Salmon but id get the other two. I told the sushi chef light rice. He ignored me. then when he saw I left half the rice pads on my plate I got scolded.. So the waiter (nice enough guy) gave me the limited AYCE menu. It had a good selection, but every time I went to order the sushi chef was very RUDE!!! Did not make for a nice meal. So my bill came to $26.11 and I gave them exact change. The last order I had was more Salmon Sushi, this time I saw the chef put extra rice then the salmon. What a ".....". So absolutely no tip for this guy..... the sushi was okay, but they watch you like a hawk eating and it was not comfortable. I'm glad I didn't go over there one hour limit. Didn't know they reverse the way they bill. thanks for the tip to the other post. Would I go back. ABSOLUTELY NO!!!! WITH CAPITAL LETTERS. The Sushi Chef was the biggest creap, no wonder there were no customers.

AYCE is back! I used to come pretty frequently a few years back and was sad to learn that they had taken the AYCE menu off...but to my surprise, they brought it back! I will be coming back here on a more regular basis again. I think this is the best AYCE sushi place in the area. I can't think of a single roll off the top of my head that I like the most, but that's only because I like pretty much all their rolls. But I guess if I had to pick one, I'd go for the spider roll with the soft shell crab inside. Definitely try that one.

Jasmine hand roll, yellow tail delight, heart attack, sushi burrito, buttery salmon ... Tasty!! Decent prices... all regular cut rolls come w/ avocado.. Avocado is always a plus especially over the usual partner, limp cucumber... AYCE is available.. But has always been cheaper for me going A la Carte. Tiny place.. friendly staff.. Have been 4 or 5 times only 2 gripes... Ordered premium sushi Fatty yellow tail never fun to find a bone in the middle of all that goodness.. and parking sucks... **** 2/24/12 update AYCE is no longer available. They list that Sushi is Half Price, but really they just double the original price and wrote an 'x' over it. Still a good deal..

All-you-can-eat is a sight to behold when the place is packed with 20- and 30-something year-olds at lunch time. The rules of the competi - I mean, lunch - are clearly posted. But the sushi. It's good. And pretty cheap. My tempura shrimp roll with crab and avocado was super, and the yellowtail roll is great too. The chefs wear fun Japanese outfits and seem to know everyone who walks in the door, which makes for a jovial atmosphere. I would not recommend a romantic dinner here, but it is a great and reliable spot for lunch.

Sushi tasted pretty fresh, but sadly, they come in itty-bitty portions. The owners/workers (i would presume) were very nice (: The place was pretty small & what sucks is that $35 worth of sushi barely filled me up. If I am ever in the area, I would probably stop by again for a snack.

4 stars for food, 1 star for service. Went with 3 friends for the AYCE sushi recently. We had a few questions for the waitress (pieces of nigiri per order, etc.) - she literally walked away from us as we were talking to her and didn't return for several minutes. Not impressed. She also left water glasses completely empty for more than 20 minutes despite repeated attempts to flag her down. The sushi itself was delicious. We got tuna, eel, salmon, and whitetail - everything was fresh and the cuts were really good. None of the pieces of whitetail we had looked the same and it didn't look like any whitetail I've ever had, so not sure what was up with that. The cuts of fish on our second round were smaller than the first, but we also ordered a LOT so it's pretty understandable. The food and atmosphere did make up for the service, but our waitress was pretty atrocious. We'll probably go back and just hope for better service.

Good: + Food is yummy! I usually don't like handrolls either, but this place had this soypaper handroll that was ... just... :D~ + Really fast if you sit at the bar + Service is really nice + There's a tub of sanitary hand wipes at the bar. How cool is that? Sit, wipe, eat! + They have this all-you-can-eat deal. AWESOME. Bad: - VERY minimal seatings--there's 22. I counted! - This place is pretty popular, so you could find yourself waiting outside for a while... I say outside because this place is pretty tiny. - The ice water barely has any ice in it (T^T) I'm just a brat and I need lots of ice in my water... lol I asked for extra and it was maybe less than a handful of ice...

Always try the Jasmine hand roll. As wonderful as other sushi places may be, my heart mainly remains with Sushi Ya because of the Jasmine hand roll. And give Sunny a break, she is a wonderful lady once you get to know her. She can seem a little rude sometimes, but it is only because she is so busy. Sunny is a sweetheart.

If you're looking for a local, quick joint for some pretty GOOD sushi go check out our friends at Sushi Ya. It's in an little strip mall- like location with a cozy home like feel to it! I love those places that you get to know the people that work there and know you'll get a decent meal....... Typically you'll see Jason at the sushi bar and Sunny the sweet lady who takes your order. I've gone a few times so this review is a summary of my whole experience there... overall the sushi is pretty fresh, I think....reasonable with the price... the parking isn't the best so you may have to street side park it if the tiny little lot gets full. Overall if you're looking for "decent" sushi with the flashy price go check them out...... I give Sushi Ya 3 stars based on the below: 1 star- decent sushi- pretty fresh 1 star- excellent customer service, friendly 1 star- local feel to it.... like that :) Happy Sushi Eating!!

YA! I no come back for sushi now! SUSHI YA IS BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! First time I came here; not bad. I only had some sashimi. Second time, NOW...If you don't finish all your rice, the staff threaten you to finish it or else they charge you for every grain. How the hell you charge me for a grain of rice?! AYCE is no more. F**K THAT! Price of food is pricey. The quality of food is decent and fresh. The quantity of food doesn't reflect the price. Instead of a tip, I left them a math equation which = to zero tip. Hey waiter! Payback's a bitch!

i think this place is under-rated. it's a great value. the fish is fresh. the food is solid. there is no ambiance though and i wouldn't recommend it for a first date. but if you're looking for cheap sushi and cheap beer (something like $3), this is the place to go! we like the nigiri sushi (the rolls are not that exciting). we've done both all you can and eat and al la carte. we've now switched to al la carte because we've realized the cost is about the same to make us both pretty damn full (the AYCE just makes us want to explode since we feel obligated to eat more than our money's worth!)

Salmon skin handroll, jasmine handroll, rolls rolls rolls. YUM YUM YUM. I've had the grilled yellow fin cheeks here, and other specials outside of the all you can eat menu. Don't let the decor or location fool you. This is a wonderful estabilishment where the sushi is fresh and the taste rivals anything you can find in Old Town Pasadena. Rather I believe it blows them away. I've been to Yoshida's, I've been to Roku. I'd rather spend my money here at Sushi Ya where my palette is appeased by the craftsmanship of the staff. Eat, Drink, and be merry Try the fried shrimp tempura or the baked mussels. Jason makes the most of the material he has there and it's just delicious. It's not Yamakase but it's a great place to have decent sushi without having to making a car payment and without stuffing your face with cheap cuts of watery frozen fish slapped with mayo and siracha sauce as if it was a Jack in the Box midnight snack. No this is real sushi with a sushi chef who happens to let you have the option of an hour of AYCE

All I have to say is my stomach and wallet are only filled with regret after this meal. First of all, I'm not a sushi snob by any means but I've been to my fair share of sushi joints from top notch omakase to yes, AYCE sushi. All of the other AYCE sushi places I've been to before have delivered average quality as expected. So my expectations for this place were not unreasonably high. After quickly browsing some reviews and seeing the decent looking pictures on Yelp, my wife and I decided to try out this place for a quick meal since it was so close by. We were of course not expecting stellar quality sushi at Sushi Ya but we were at least expecting to fill our bellies with plenty of average tasting sushi just to satisfy our cravings without spending top dollar in J-Town. But all their $25/pp food gave us were stale fish, sour tasting mayo sauces, watered down soy sauce, and bland wasabi. I would say the only thing worth the Yelp 1 star minimum is the $1.99 everyday/all day happy hour beer special. **THE FOOD At a nicer place, we would of course order only nigiri-zushi and sashimi. But being an AYCE joint, we figured we would stick to mostly hot food and rolls. For our first round, we ordered Shrimp and Vegi Tempura, Sesame Chicken, Salmon and Albacore sushi, Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll, Spider Roll, and a Jasmine Hand Roll. We never got to the second round (and not because we were full). --- Shrimp and Vegi Tempura: They were perfectly fine. But it's kind of tough to ruin fried tempura (unless the oil doesn't get drained). Nothing special but met our expectations. --- Sesame Chicken: This was a little odd. Probably the first time I had sesame chicken fried in tempura batter. It pretty much tasted like chicken nuggets. Don't get me wrong, but I love chicken nuggets...when I'm at McDonald's. --- Salmon Sushi: It looked nothing like the smooth textured fish pictured on Yelp. It was stale; the meat of the fish was splitting and they didn't even cut it right because there was still part of the skin left on it. --- Albacore Sushi: Worse than the salmon. It had a freezer burnt after-taste, which they tried to mask by drenching it in ponzu sauce. The sauce is supposed to compliment the fish, but instead they drowned it in ponzu, which the stale fish just soaked up like a sponge. Disgusting. Probably should have stopped eating here but my starving stomach got the better of me. --- Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll: A standard California roll with tempura crumbles, spicy tuna and a spicy mayo sauce on top. It looked fine until I ate it. Again they tried to mask the flavor with tons of sauce. This is the first mayo topped item we ate so we didn't immediately notice the sour (possibly spoiling) flavor of the mayo. Plus it was masked by the spiciness of the sriracha. It wasn't until we ate the Spider roll that we became fully self-aware of this travesty. --- Spider Roll: Don't even get me started... First of all, the soft-shell crab was definitely not fresh or prepared properly (surprise). But aside from the soggy, stale, grainy soft-shell crab, the mayo was the worst part of this roll. It was mildly discernible in the previous roll but in this roll without the sriracha to mask, you could really taste the sour mayo. The mayo combined with the crab was absolutely gross. We only ate one piece and sent it back. --- Jasmine Hand Roll: This came highly recommended by other Yelp reviewers. The chef used the same sauce that was used on the Spider Roll. Enough said. **THE SERVICE --- Wait Staff: Clueless. What else can I say? In preparation of what my wife and I were planning to order for the first round, we asked both waitresses how many sushi pieces are in 1 order. We assumed 2 pieces per order but some places only serve one piece per order. With it being AYCE we didn't know ... and apparently neither did they. Should have been the first sign to get up and run out of there right? Alas, hindsight is 20/20. When we sent back the Spider Roll and Jasmine Hand Roll to one of the waitresses, she didn't even apology for serving us the spoiled food. She walked over to the sushi chef and told him about it and he questioned her. So she came back to our table with the same plate of food and asked us if we at least wanted a box to take it to go. Seriously? --- Sushi Chef: I'll give him props that he prepared everything quickly (unlike some previous reviewers' experienced). However, we were the only customers besides 1 other table of 2 people (so not really saying much). He definitely was offended when we sent back the food and couldn't believe we didn't want to take it to go and that it would go to waste. When we left he looked away and crossed his arms pouting. Not even an apology either. So unprofessional. Ok, if you've read this far then I think you get the point. Stay away from this place or else you may get a "told you so" comment on your review. Thank you for reading my first Yelp review!

The main attraction here is the all you can eat sushi for $24 at dinner ($22 at lunch). But at that price, don't expect the world. What you can expect is fair grade sushi and lots of it. They tend to lean towards the monster rolls, but for me, I prefer the nigiri style. I'm surprised they don't overload the rice, but I wish they had more selection. For the all you can eat, you're limited to hamachi, ebi, anago, sake, and maguro for the high end. After that you have the second rate fish like mackerel, flying fish roe, tai, tako, etc. Although I'm not a roll person, I was impressed by the sushiya roll and the spider roll. Sushiya is a combination of the high end fish, and the spider is soft shell crab. Go on an empty stomach, indulge in the $2 Kirins, and walk away full.

So I was on an All-You-Can-Eat-Sushi craze for a few weeks and decided to try Sushi Ya... Boy was I dissappointed.. This location was very small and didn't have alot of choices and the little Old lady who runs this place pretty much ruined my experience. Pretty much you have 1 hour to eat all you can eat except the workers tend to take their sweet time and not make everything you ordered at once... and then while I am eatting the Old lady kepts coming up to me and saying if I don't finish that they will charge me extra! Hello! I'm still eating! I don't really understand why asian think they need to control everyone... I just want to eat my food and leave! Well I believe their menu selection was limited, there was alot of sushi items that we were not allowed to order for AYCES whereas other AYCES all everything on the menu to be ordered. I will not come back here mainly because the lady kepted bugging me while I was trying to eat... FYI: I don't eat alot of sushi... I tend to just order the cheap stuff so I don't know why they are bugging someone who isn't even getting her money's worth with AYCES.. I just came along because my friends love sushi.

Be ready to down some serious sushi in an hour! All-you-can-eat sushi for $24 (dinner) is not bad at all. For all the fresh sushi we ordered, I think we ripped them off at that price! I usually start off with a Jasmine Hand Roll and also end with one or two. This hard to find soybean-wrapped roll has creamy goodness with a crunch to it! Some of their premium rolls we've tried were the Spider, Yellow Tail Delight, Caterpillar, and Crunch Dragon. Appetizers are also included in the all-you-can-eat menu like mixed tempura, calamari, and baked mussels. Those alone would already break the $10 mark. I'm so glad we had an appetite, or else they would've charged us for unfinished food. Last time I went here, people were forming a line in front of this small sushi restaurant that sits 22 total. So it might be a good idea to dine early, to beat the rush. Most people like to sit at the bar for the all-you-can-eat experience. The chefs are always fun to talk to while they make fresh quality sushi right in front of you. I always look forward to dining at Sushiya when I'm traveling down south. I'm thinking of trying a Fire Cracker and some Monkey Brains, then get a Heart Attack the next time I visit this place. I can't wait!

I'm really sorry nice sushi chefs but I have to give this place 2 stars... because I don't think it is worth shelling out $26 to come here b/c the quality of the fish is meh. We did the all you can eat for $26. It was an okay price for AYCE but I really don't think the quality was that good + they put A LOT of rice for the sushi. The rice was alright at first but the more I ate the more potent the taste of vinegar became.. not so good IMO. The quality of the fish was alright... it is AYCE so I really couldn't expect anything stellar. I think the best ones were tuna, yellowtail and albacore. The crunch tuna roll stood out as being really good. i really liked their heart attack appetizer (jalapeno peppers dipped in batter and fried + filled with spicy tuna) Freaking delicious! One thing that I really didn't like is that I was here with a friend and we did the AYCE but were having a leisurely dinner and were reminded/given a warning about the 1 hr time limit. I guess if you don't finish all your food in an hour the owner can "challenge" you and then you have to pay extra??? I don't go to many AYCE sushi places but I thought this was kind of bizarre / rude. We had put in our 2nd order maybe 30 minutes in and it was a good amount of food but we were definitely going to finish it. The restaurant was half empty so it wasn't like they needed the seats... I could maybe see the "challenge" being appropriate for a group of guys who are there just trying to scarf down everything in sight but I thought it was just bad form when we're ordered so far ahead of the 1hr and were chatting, eating and having a good time. I definitely will not be back here anytime soon for the AYCE... I might stop by for an order of heart attacks though.

What happened, Sushi ya? This place wasn't bad the last time I visited, but this time was just disappointment. Had their AYCE deal, $25/person. Tried a couple of the rolls. There's one that stood out, forgot the name, but the inside is scallop and avocado and the outside is spicy tuna... that was delicious. In terms of sushi, only the albacore and white tuna were closest to being fresh, everything else just wasn't up to par. Color's bad, didn't taste fresh, just pure disappointment. The sushi comes with a huge ball of rice, and the rule is you have to finish everything, no leftover rice balls. When we ordered our 2nd (and last) time, the waitress told us to hurry and finish the food because our 1 hour limit is up. Umm... it's not like we're allowed to order anymore anyways, and it wasn't even a busy night! wth?! Sushi Ya, we had some good times, but unfortunately, our journey ends here!

So I went here with a friend the other day to finally try this place out since everyone kept talking about how great the sushi here was. First off, parking was the biggest bitch ever. The restaurant is located in such a SMALL and BUSY plaza which made it incredibly difficult to find a good parking spot. On top of that, this place is definitely a hole in the wall. The pricing for AYCE sushi wasn't too bad, but it is more expensive than Asahi Sushi (one of my favorite AYCE sushi places in Riverside). The sushi here was definitely interesting. The raw sushi pieces, such as the Albacore, was definitely THICK-- for some people, it's a plus. Since I ordered three orders (not thinking that it was going to be SO THICK), the Albacore definitely grossed me out to the point where I lost my appetite. Additionally, they give you A LOT of rice in your sushi, which causes you to be full in a faster rate; Thus, the CONS to this place would be the small place that probably only fits 20 people MAX, THICK slices of raw fish meat, amount of rice in the sushi, the intimidating old waitress that seems to just hate her job being a waitress, and the rules to the AYCE sushi (such as only having an hour limit to order, two rounds of ordering, and charging for any unfinished left over pieces). However, the PROS to this sushi joint would be the cooked stuff. I think EVERYTHING, especially the Jasmine Roll, Spider Roll, Special Eel Roll, etc. were pretty legit. The tempuras were very hot, fresh, and crunchy, which made it the BEST AYCE tempura ever. But definitely beware of not being able to finish your food cause the rules said they'll charge you for any unfinished sushi. Overall, I definitely had a nice time here eating because it was by far the best COOKED AYCE sushi. I wouldn't mind coming here again with just ONE or TWO friends considering the fact that this is one of the smallest places ever.

so, AYCE aside, this is a decent place to go for cheap sushi. yes, i know, the words "cheap" and "sushi" should never go in the same sentence. but sometimes, when all you want is some salmon, tuna, or yellowtail (aka "common" sushi) sushi, or some rolls, this place is pretty good for that. don't try anything weird - you'll likely regret it. but they have decent rolls for okay prices, which is why they get an a-ok from me.

WORSE sushi restaurant! by far the WORSE alll-you-can eat experience! all the sushi had 4x the amount of rice that you would normal see on a piece of sushi with the thinnest slice of fish. Pretty much all i ate was RICE!!!! we had order green muscles. waited for at least 30 minutes. we asked the waitress about our green muscles order. waitress responded, "I ate it!" I was like "what? what do u mean u ate it?" waitress said that the SUSHI CHEF didn't know who order green muscles so he TOLD HER to EAT IT!!!!!!!!

Gross. Rip Off. 'Chef' doesn't know what he's doing. Well you can't do too much with bad fish I guess. Anything with crab/mayo is sour. The wait staff was clueless. Sorry, I wanted to like it, but NO.

I intended to try this place out after reading some of the other yelp reviews, but was so disgusted by the clutter in the dining area that we left. There are boxes and boxes of STUFF on a table near the front door - condiments, beer, etc. And the place is very small, so it is hard to ignore. Also, we couldn't find any parking in the lot outside, so parked on an adjacent side street and passed the most foul smelling dumpsters on the way in. Yuck yuck yuck. I recommend Ichima Sushi, just down Foothill a little bit over this place any day.

Sushi-ya is one of the worst AYCE places I've been to. From the moment you sit down is when your timer starts of your one hour. Within that hour you have to finish what you order (or they charge you) and you have to wait for their slow service staff to serve you everything you order. The one time we went the lady decides that we're only going to bring out half of the order and not fulfill the rest of the order. What is up with that? Then she said oh we let you guys order past your time limit, even though we were still in the hour time limit. I'm going to an all you can to enjoy the sushi but if you're going to force me to just wolf down sushi in an hour, that's ridiculous. Is it because they're trying to hide the fact that their sushi isn't that good? When you order rolls you have to be careful. You might find bones in your sushi. Regardless, my friends and I haven't been back since. If you have a large group good luck getting in as there really aren't enough seats for groups bigger than 5. The appearance also isn't that great. I felt like I was sitting in a cramped box with a couple of tables and a sushi bar thrown in there. There are old boxes piled in the front of old beer, which in this day and age, you should throw away. There might be bugs growing in there. Parking is horrid. The spaces are small and in order to find parking elsewhere you have to park in the surrounding neighborhood. Go down the street to either Fuji or Gin's Sushi. There are better sushi places around. I drove by recently on a Friday night and Sushi-ya was closed! What kind of business is closed days that people are out and about?

Sushi Ya is a good place if you are hungry and want some high quality all you can eat fish. $25 a person for AYCE sushi is the norm. I came here with the GF and two of her high school buddies. We arrived at 7pm on a Wednesday night. Three of the four tables were taken, and the bar was decently filled, not a high occupancy, but efficient nevertheless. We ordered mostly nigiri, skipped out on the 'specialty' cut rolls, and after some contemplation, decided on a handroll each. The nigiri was very satisfying. The fish were cut to a decent size, and the rice wasn't overwhelmingly filling... A perfect amount of both. Of the different selection, the salmon was definitely the freshest. The unagi was very tasty The rest (tuna, white tuna, halibut, albacore, yellowtail, squid, octopus) were all solid. No complaints there. We also ordered the heartattack (spicy tuna encased in jalapeño), which wasn't as potent as expected. The dynamite was definitely a nice treat, though. The handrolls I had were the Salmon Skin roll and the Jasmine roll. It's hard to butcher or make the Salmon Skin hand roll standout, but adding a fresh slice of avocado gave this roll a very nice taste. The Jasmine roll was definitely something worth trying and is like a flavor explosion in your mouth. The negative part about AYCE here is that they do time you. And it's not that you have to get your order in within an hour, but you have to finish everything within the hour. Or else they charge you. You can't waste any food. Or they charge you. Yeah, that sweet little korean lady that took your order? She's kind of a nazi about finishing ALL the food within the hour. Oh yeah, they also have a pretty funny pen that said, "This pen is stolen from Sushi-Ya". Funny, but kind of sad too. LOL.

Best hand-rolls hands down. Even if you are working your way through the menu on an AYCE binge the hand-rolls are not skimpy. BUT like so many other yelpers point out, there are other damning features about this dining experience. The fish quality is not always on point, its small and the old lady in the wig working the room lags big time. Its a cozy spot with clutter in the corner and the parking lot is small. We drove up one time and the little slow ajumma saw us and waved us in, only to shake her head and say,"No, sorry we are closing." We just missed the Friday lunch and realized that they were closed for dinner. Apparently, they are closed on Saturday too: wackness. I want to like this place, its not the best sushi, in fact in can be quite bad at times. But when its good, it's really good and aside from the little old lady who is charming in her slow way, the sushi chefs are nice. Thanks Allen L for recommending Fuji. I was checking to see if Sushi Ya was open yesterday and came across your review. You were right.

For the price, this is a good deal. The sushi quality is average, but it's all you can eat. You are given a time limit of one hour, but there are plenty of rolls and nigiri to order under the all you can eat menu and it is made very fast for you to eat. My favorite are the spider rolls. I've never had all you can eat spider rolls offered before! The "Bacardi" roll is ON FIRE (literally) and is a kick in the face as you really taste that alcohol! Draft beer is cheap and only $2 all day, though I see the price went up from reading other Yelper reviews. Service is not that great and if you need something or want more food you have to holler over the waitress. This place is very small with 4 tables and at more 15 person sushi bar. It is hard to be seated here with large parties or even groups of four as seating is very limited. I did enjoy coming here though and will be back for another round.

Great prices! Always happy with service, whether for sit down or take out. Hours are slightly odd, but doesn't sway how I feel about it. My favorite of course is the Jasmine hand roll. :)

Just an update to note that AYCE is no longer available and the beer costs $3 now I think. I still enjoy coming here though! Update to the update: AYCE is back and the beers are $2 again!

I like this place for the following reasons: 1) Good prices 2) Usually not very busy 3) Service is good (sometimes) 4) Close to my house 5) Fast quick sushi meal But with all those reasons, it still is not a GREAT sushi restaurant. The sashimi is always fresh and everything is just standard. Though do order the heart attack if you like spicy and fried food. Their AYCE for dinner is $23.95 and it's actually a pretty good deal if you can eat more than 3 or 4 rolls on your own. Come here for a quick sushi meal at a decent price, but don't expect anything spectacular.

Been back 2 or 3 times now and it's been pretty consistent. And no, I haven't been back to Midori yet to make an ultimate comparison. I should correct myself and say that the sushi bar fits 10 people, not 10-12 like I originally stated. This time we actually sat at the bar. Yeah, I believe this is the first time in 3 visits that I've sat at the bar. Or maybe the 2nd time in 4 visits. I don't remember. The sushi chefs are really nice and helpful. I seriously do wonder how they can remember all these orders for several people all at once. Don't they lose track somewhere?? Ever??? One of my favorites has become the calamari tempura roll. The calamari is not overcooked and they usually give you the extra couple of pieces on top. Hey, we're paying for this stuff, we better get those extra couple of pieces. The short lady is still hilarious. She was giving these two guys sitting next to us crap about I forgot what, but it was kind of amusing. Those 2 guys ended up getting the infamous Bacardi Roll. It's basically a roll that's doused (well, the plate around it) with Bacardi then lit on fire. All bells and whistles. They saw us watching and offered us a piece, but we declined. I've heard from someone on here that it didn't taste very good. Maybe because they had ordered it at the end and were full, but those 2 guys didn't finish it. I'm still thinking about going to Midori to see if they truly have gone down in quality, cuz I think the fish there is slightly better, have better creativity on the rolls, and give you less rice. Yes, I haven't given up on Midori just quite yet. I just haven't found the time to go. But Sushi Ya will remain on my list of restaurants that I willingly will go to.

Came here because a friend of mine comes here often. Small hole in the wall place.Three items for $10.95.The teriyakis were big pieces but not a lot. Miso soup was hot.Tempura was numerous. What I didn't like was the cook was also cleaning the windows outside prior to cooking. I hoped he washed his hands. There are only five tables and a sushi bar.

So my friends and I have been to this place say.. around.. 3 times? Their food isn't terrible but gosh their service sure is. First time we went: We had a decent time, had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. Ordered our sushi and beer and over all the taste wasn't bad. They're not the best at rolling their sushi though.. i'd say at least 3 of 4 pieces I ate fell apart as I was attempting to eat them. Their carrots in the spider roll are definitely not a good combination either. wait Second time and third time were worse. Went back, had to wait which wasn't really an issue.. but when we were seated we were so close to the ppl next to us it couldn't be any more awkward. It took them 10 minutes to actually provide us with a menu and another 10 minutes to come back for our order. We ordered a number of different rolls.. and after eating them for a while.. you'll come to realize that a number of the taste exactly the same due to the sauce they use, and still the rolls were wrapped poorly. Sure the prices are cheap, but do you really like to go to a restaurant where you eat cheap but leave unhappy? One of my friends also recently went to have the sushi buffet, it's like one of the previous review said, PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT.. u have to order and FINISH the sushi within an hour. They'll charge you for whatever is left over in an hour. I can honestly say i've never been to a sushi restaurant that does something like that to their customers.. so instead of my friends meal being 25 dollars.. it ended up being $50.

Sushi Ya is definitely lacking in service and ambience. It is located in a strip mall with limited parking. There is only one waitress, an elderly Japanese lady whose service needs improvement. She treats her customers in an intimidating manner as if she were paying us for the meal. The sushi rolls were average in price just about as pricey as Yoshida, which has way better service, quality, and atmosphere. They have a lot of untraditional rolls that are deep fried; so if you like those you are in for a treat. However, STAY AWAY from the lunch specials. Even though they are relatively cheap about $8 for a combo, you will be disappointed with the dry beef teriyaki and salmon. Overall, come here for cheap sushi but the small messy restaurant sure won't impress your date!

i like this place. it IS very small and the stacks of boxes by the door leave something to be desired. BUT i do love the jasmine hand roll and the sushi ya role. the parking lot is small. i prefer to go for lunch as it is less crowded. I also think the experience is way better if you sit at the bar. the little old lady waitress can be grumpy and slow and make mistakes on your bill. but hey my friends and i keep coming back. and they have $2 beers!

I like this place. So far I've been here twice, even though I'm very against the whole "you have 1 hour to eat" scare tactic. This place actually doesn't abide by that rule, well, I haven't experienced it yet. The sushi is really good for a buffet and the selection is wide. The heart attack left my tongue numb and bitter XD I think there were seeds in that one o.O The first time I went there, they said they were out of teriyaki and most other non-sushi foods. That made me sad because that's what I wanted at the time. Jason is the senior of the chefs and it was good when he was fixing our sushi at the very beginning. Then the rookie came in and well, the rice balls were huge and warm o.o;; One of these days, the crabby old lady might start a fuss about me taking over an hour and when that time comes, I'll just head on over to Fuji. Though, the crabby old lady is soooo cute X)!!! She's so tiny!

I love this place!!! Talk about hole in the wall, it is the definition of cozy. Whenever I go it seems as if most of the sushi bar places are taken, so if you are going with a decent group be sure to call ahead and check for spaces. Good all you can eat prices and tasty too! I just like the smaller all you can eat sushi places where you can build up a relationship with the chefs, I mean try that with Todai. I know that will all you can eat places you can expect the quality to be a little on the low side, but not with Sushiya always have fresh fish. I would agree with other posters about the old lady, I think due to oldness shes on the craby side. Always threatening to charge extra, hehe. I recomend the Barcardi Roll for entertainment cuz they douse the whole thing with Barcardi (duh) and set it aflame.

Service - ranges from 1 star to 4 stars (dependant on which old waitress you get and which sushi chef you get) Food - 3 1/2 stars As my other reviews state, service is what drives me to a place. I could care less if a place has the most outstanding food in the whole gosh dang world, if they don't make me feel comfrotable there, there is some other hole in the wall place that will be glad to have my business. Mind you, I am a very generous tipper when service is even a little bit above par, and stingy as hell when you disregard me. The first time me and my gf ever went to this place was about 3-4 months back, the sushi chef that works on the right side of the bar is very nice and sincere. One of the main reasons we went back more than once was because of him. The first time we ever went there, it was the slow and confused old waitress working, but we endured through it because of the friendliness of chef. The food is good, not great, but then again the place doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to eat at. We do the usual nigiri, salmon, white tuna, etc etc. We don't do rolls to often, if at all. But we were satisfied the first time we went. Second time we came in, they were packed, I guess they are packed frequently but there was an open table and we sat down. Once again it was the rude and slow old waitress. We waited at the table and tried to garner her attention, but 5-10 minutes passed without her even looking in our direction. Mind you, if you have never been here, this is a very small place, four tables and about 10-14 seats at the bar. We left after she refused to acknowledge us and took our business elsewhere. Usually once something like this happens we decide not to come back to the establishment. But the food is decent and the chef is very nice. So we went back to eat for a second time and this time the nice older waitress was there. She is very attentive and sweet. We enjoyed this experience much more than the first time. One hint in case any of you do decide to go. If all of the bar seats are filled and it seems like just one large group, just leave and come back some other time, apparentally when the place gets a large group it loses its focus on the rest of the clientele. So we were happy with the third trip (second trip actually eating) we made. So about a month ago we decide to go back. What a horrible experience this was. First the chef was not there, the one we enjoy, and the old grumpy waitress was back. I truly hate the place because of her. It just kills the whole atmosphere. We go there and get seated at one of the tables because the bar was full. We order our usual and the waitress takes 15 minutes like expected to come over and bring us our drinks and take our order slip. I have never seen so many mistakes being made on our orders. First they give us something we didnt order, then they tell us we ordered it, but I told them no trust me, the one thing that we dont order is tuna. They then say oh it was a mix up and bring us the corrected order, but mess up the very next order. I dont know if they take us for granted or if it was just an off night, but I can gaurantee you that we would have tipped better than 95% of the clients in there if the service was just at par. Apparentally, they don't care about the service aspect of their business, there were no apologies for their sheer lack of effort. I am sad to say that i will no longer go to this place, it was good for a while, but in the end you just get tired of dealing with the old lady and the more often than not mistakes they make. Good luck to all of you people who go there.

Sushi-ya is one of the few Korean owned sushi places that I will ever go to. Even though I am Korean myself, I find that if you want a particular ethnic food, more often than not, it should be made by someone that is from that country or can trace their roots to that particular country (except for some Korean places and fast food places like Panda and Yoshinoya). i dunno, maybe it's just me. Once you get into the restaurant, you will quickly notice that the place is relatively small. Also, the parking lot isn't that big either (there is a La Estrella Mexican place that's open 24 hours and has good tacos and ceviche...but I digress). But once you find your spot in the parking lot and get seated, you're good. WHAT I ORDERED: This place is known for their all you can eat. It's 29.95 for dinner and believe me, when I go, I definitely get my money's worth. Some of the good rolls/nigiri that they have include: * The Jasmine Roll (forgot what the owner said that was in the roll, but it's covered in this interesting soy paper) * The Bacardi Roll (they put alcohol on the plate and lite it on fire...uber good) * Spider rolls (soft shell crab) * Lobster roll (California roll with little pieces of cooked lobster on top) * White tuna (Ono) * their salmon was surprisingly good * albacore tuna WAIT/SUSHI STAFF: The place, because of it's size, has only one waitress. She's cool and friendly. The sushi chefs are also cool too. But if you do go, you have to get the owner, Jason. The other guy, is not as generous on the portion control, if you know what I mean. VERDICT: I've been here many times and will continue to come out here. It's not too far from where i live and work, so it's all good!

I've been going to Sushi Ya for all my sushi cravings. I live near San Gabriel and wanted to try local sushi areas. Before Sushi Ya, I ate at Yoshino's until they changed sushi chefs and before that I ate at Kiku's Sushi which is somewhere in Monrovia. Out of these 3 places, I like Sushi Ya the best. The service is decent, but the sushi is good and the speed in which they give you your food isn't too shabby. Some of their best rolls there are the Jasmine Hand Roll and their staple Sushi Ya Roll. I highly reccomend these two to get you started. If I can fault Sushi Ya for anything its their lack of space both inside the restaurant and parking!!! They recently raised their prices to 26.95 for dinner buffet abnd 21.95 for lunch buffet. They are now closed on Friday evenings as well. So I guess they are doing well enough to make money during the week to offset being closed on the weekends. Overall I extremely reccomend Sushi Ya, the price vs food is good deal and bear in mind after 7pm the lines for Sushi Ya expand exponentially.

The only reason im giving this place a 3 out of 5 is because the last time i went there the lady thought that I had not tipped her because i had put the money on the bar. She then ran out after me and said, "you no tip, you no come back" I unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to correct her. Otherwise the sushi is awesomely fresh, beer is cheep, rolls were medium -large size. friendly environment (for the most part haha) Think ive gotten a bunch of tuna and yellowtail related tried 5 or so of the mostly fresh fish rolls and they were pretty good.

My wife & I love to eat and not afraid to try out new places. I have very high expectation after hearing several of my friends are highly praising this place - 1) Price 2) Taste. We then went to Sushi Ya with our 2 1/2 years old son one night. Without a second thought, we got the All U Can Eat sushi. I let my wife ordered the sushi and rolls from the menu and here are our thoughts: I. Taste 1) The rolls taste better than the shushi, however, the rice in the rolls is too easy to fall apart. 2) The fish on the shushi is OK. Unlike some other reviews, I guess we are lucky that the fishes on that night are somewhat fresh. 3) Don't order the Teriyaki Chicken ... tasteless cooked chicken and then pour the teriyaki sauce on top. I think I can cook better than that. II. Service 1) Not toddler friendly at all. The old lady looks mean. She told us that my son cannot share the food with us if we are getting All U Can Eat. We have to order seperately for him. O Come on, he is only 2 and half years old and do you think he can eat alot and make your restaurant broke??? Not sure that is the "order" from her boss or what. 2) They want you to "clean" all the food that you order. No rice (from the sushi) is allowed to leave behind. I agree that no waste on food. However, I have a piece of rice fell on the floor and then I put it back on the plate. The old lady asked me to finish that as well. How mean!!! 3) 1 hour rule. Think ahead how much you can eat and order all at once. Certainly this place is not for people that eat only a little ..... III. Toilet The toilet is .... you would rather not going there .... May be I am bias in my review. I will give one more star if they are not telling me my son cannot share couple pieces of sushi rolls. Anyway, think twice before you go there if you have young children.

$25 ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI? I'm down for this! The sashimi is the freshest out of the ones that I've been. They also allow you to order the special rolls and some from the appetizers menu as well. Although, the parking can be terrible since they only have about 20 parking lots in that small complex shared by couple of restaurants and shops. The place is not that big, so if you are going for the all-you-can-eat sushi, make sure you come early; and large groups are not recommended unless you guys want to split up.

The Great - $2 beers, jasmine Rolls. The Good - Fresh Fish and rolls are good. Never had anything bad from the menu... I want to do the buffet one day.. The Bad - Place isnt the cleanest we've been to. The Horrible - the fact they are closed on Friday nights & Saturdays... The little short lady, (Sunny) who looks like she is grumpy and in a bad mood, as crazy as it sounds, adds to the place's charm. We have become regulars and she always brings crayons & paper for my 4 year old daughter to color. Always good to go here.

That angry little lady is a god send. She's a bastion against hordes of irritating americans that demand service and a smile, easy parking, and accouterments on a whim. With her dragon lady glare she silences even the most needy patrons, with casual indifference she ignores the masses. If it were not for her, Sushi Ya would be dead to me, as i look in at shoulder to shoulder sheeple who roll their eyes at this tiny little lady. The dragon lady speaks a very simple language that i've long since deciphered. I raise my empty glass of kirin, she refills it. i give my glass of beer to the chef, she brings me another one. i raise my hand without a beer glass in it, she brings me a check. I am thankful for the huge amount of cheap food and beer that she has made available. More so that they provided a modicum of parking, a chair, a roof, and a table. she knows this, i know this, and we've boiled our transactions down to her glares and my smiles. I will eventually win her over. Eventually. Hand-rolls. Stick to hand rolls as you chase that hot sake down with cold beer. Salmon skin hand rolls are unbelievably delicious, the fatty skin that's been broiled to a crisp, the grease mixes in with the vinegar rice, the pickled carrots provide a crisp snap. Bite, gulp beer, repeat. Try a different roll. Go nuts. No one cares what you're doing here. For $30 i can get 2 pints of ice cold kirin, all the sushi i can eat, and pay tax and tip. Walk out satiated, inebriated, and only marginally poorer. I would eat here without a waitress, without parking, without chairs or tables. In a house, with a mouse. Here or there, anywhere.

I like this place. It looks cheesy situated in a small shopping center next to a balloon store and fast food mexican place, but that's how you ward off other potential customers and long lines. The place is super small- and everytime I go, it's almost full. (Well, ten customers= almost full) The owner, i'm guessing is a little old lady. The food is delicious! They have interesting flavors- heart attack, philly, volcano, etc etc. It's always happy hour for their beer, which is available in three flavors only. It's inexpensive and a nice place to stop in and satiate your deepest fishiest desires. yum.

I can't give anything higher than this because the food was not fresh and there has to be something against a place knowingly serving food like this. I am not angry in anyway. I am not a picky eater. I can see how this place would be a good place to eat and the service was good (Dragon Lady was awesome). But I got the AYCE sushi and 3 of the 4 rolls I got did not have fresh fish on it. It was really a chore to try to eat it. I had red clam and albacore sushi also and it looked dried and had a different taste to it. The tuna did not have that redness to it that is usually has. I really wish they would let us order one roll at a time instead of having us specify all our rolls a head of time. Would I come back? Most likely not, and I really think it depends on which days you go there. Not a good way to decide when to eat there.

I come here once a week. It is my favorite spot in Pasadena for sushi. The quality of fish, friendly service, and the prices are amazing. AYCE is back! And they have great lunch specials for fresh fish rolls.

What an awesome find for the all-you-can-eat sushi lovers. The way Sushi Ya treated me, I would say no other place has. I would especially like to recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh, most delicious fish in a nice quiet area far from all the worries and city clutter. Definitely coming back again! Five Stars!

My gosh, I absolutely loved my first SushiYa experience!! Woohoo for cheap Kirin! $2 beers guys!! I love the pairing combination of sushi and beru! Heaven! Okay, here is the thing... it was 915pm, I was starvin beyond imagination.. so me and my awesome bf decided to head down to Sushiya for some sushi pigout!! haha... we would only do this if and only we were extremely hungry and mentally prepared. haha... But it was bad planning on my part because by the time we got there, it was around 935pm, and they close at 10pm. ( So note to future Sushiya yelpers, don't go to sushiya for AYCE if you only has got 25 minutes to grub!) So... we just sat at the sushi bar and ordred a bunch of stuff. The sushi chef are super friendly. One of the sushi chef tried to explain the AYCE deal to us, but due to some communication barrier ( oh yeah, I don't think the sushi chefs are Japanese 'cause I heard them communicating in Korean), anyways, food conquers all... so eventually, after 2 big glass od beers later, we are spoke the same language. haha. And you know what guys... I thought the little japanese lady was pretty nice. She was actually really friendly to us. Maybe it's because it's toward closing time. haha. anyways, it was a very pleasant dinnier at Sushi-ya, would I be back?? Heck yeah!! But next time, I will come back and be really hungry and give the AYCE deal a try! They betta be ready!! :D

Came here for some take out before my friends and I watched the Lakers stomp out them McNuggets. It was either here or Gin, but my friend insisted that the sashimi here was pretty good so we ended up coming here. Again I would like to emphasize that I came here only for take out, not for sit in and dining. -Interior/Exterior Located in a VERY small plaza/corner and the restaurant itself is rather small, maximum occupancy is probably 18, 20? There is either seating at the bar or at tables, I wouldn't bring more than a party of four here, just because of the size issue. There were four sushi chefs when I walked in which was surprising, most restaurants would have two or three while this itty bitty restaurant had four! There were also a flat screen and a CRT TV playing the Lakers game (woot!). -Service Since I only came for take out it didn't take that long for two orders of 12-piece mixed sashimi, 1 crunch roll, 1 crunch rainbow, and 1 bc-something or other. We were in and out (outside mostly because I didn't want to block the patrons inside) before the first quarter ended. Good service! -Food For takeouts they give a nice saucer full of soy sauce, nice to know that they aren't stingy with it, although they could put more wasabi =). Sashimi was good and fresh, the rainbow crunch roll was good too. The 12 piece sashimi came with salmon, tuna, and I would like to say yellowtail (please correct me if I'm wrong) which came out to be around $13. Rainbow crunch roll came out to be $9 which was your standard slabs of sushi on top of a California roll. Overall it's a decent little restaurant in Pasadena, if they could somehow move to a different location with more parking and larger floor space then it should be great. Other than that hope that no one else Yelps this place so it doesn't get packed and it'll remain your secret sushi gem.

I come to this place once in a while to get a quick fix for all you can eat sushi. While I can spend $100 on Sushi for lunch, I usually prefer spending about 20 something. As far as sushi quality I'll give it a high 2 to a low 3. 1 extra star for offering all you can eat on counter and being close to Pasadena. Yes the lady is a bit intimidating. This is a very small place and it's not good for a large group.

I came here after a coworker of mine told me this was the freshest sushi he had in Pasadena, and that they had $2 beers, all day. So a couple of us went down there, ordered some beers, sat at the bar, and ordered sushi piece after sushi piece. I had to have a talk with my coworker the next day, I felt like kicking him in nuts for wasting my time. A few months after this, he tried to convince me Coke Zero tasted just like Coke - and that's when I realized, he has no taste buds. You can't complain about the $2 beers though, and I will admit their cooked rolls (such as ones with eel) are pretty good - but normal sushi (hamachi, uni, toro) - not so good, and it didn't taste fresh.

When eating at an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, it is important to know that you will never win. The notion that the sushi bar would end up losing money if you order enough food is false. Especially at Sushiya, the staff uses petty and inhospitable tactics to ensure a large profit as well as an unpleasant experience for the eater. I entered Sushiya with my friend minutes after they opened doors making us the only customers there for the majority of the meal. I had heard great things from my cousin about the place and decided on eating all-you-can-eat. Upon reading the rules of the meal, I already felt like an unwelcome customer. You can only order twice throughout the whole meal. Leaving uneaten rice balls will cause them to refuse to take your next order or charge you extra. Also the meal only lasts an hour making me and my friend feel rushed throughout the meal. After our initial order, the staff spent twenty minutes making our food. How did they take so long when we ordered very little, when there were three sushi chefs, and no one else was there? The waitress even lingered around a little before bringing us our food. It is these sad attempts to run down the clock that made me lose my appetite. True to my cousin's recommendation, the food was quite edible. Though some of the rolls contained a little too much rice (another way to keep us from eating too much fish), the portions were generous and the rolls were creative. Overall their Americanized Korean made Japanese food receives a strong 6/10 on my sushi scale. Probably the worst part of my meal was when we ordered our second serving of sushi. Since we ordered very little in the beginning to gauge how big the portions were, we went all out on our final order. Upon receiving the orders, the sushi chef gave us a nasty look before making our orders. That just pissed me off. After the bad service and long waits they forced on me and my friend, the guy still had the balls to give us an angry look? Wow. Even as we finished out meal, I still saw the guy's ugly mug on the corner of my eye staring at me. Never again will I go to Sushiya. I suggest anyone who passes by the restaurant to keep on walking.

1st timers beware!!! 1 hour time limite and you MUST finish everything you order, or they will try to charge you for uneaten portions. Made the mistake of ordering too many rolls, thinking they were 4 piece plates. However, they are full-sized, 8 piece rolls and large pieces at that. Fish didn't taste very fresh and some of the rolls we ordered weren't very good or tasty. Sorta expect better food and service for $30/person. Better off going to a different sushi buffet and save a few bucks.

AYCE sushi is one of my favorites. I can get my sushi craving satisfied without having any price limitations. So when my bf took a day off of work, we decided to go. We went in and my first thought was, "this place is super small, no wonder there are long wait times here." The sushi chefs are friendly. It didn't look like the cleanest place because there were boxes and what not around the seating area. We sat next to the window and looked over the menu. We ordered a lot of food! Appetizer: Calamari - the squid was too tough and oil to eat. Monkey Brain - ehh, not bad and not good Jalapeno Bomb - my favorite! they don't put too much cream cheese Volcano - very flavorful and was baked just right Sushi/Rolls/Hand Rolls: Jasmine Hand Roll - definitely recommend. Yellowtail Sushi - fresh Spider Roll - fresh big soft shell crab, I always get this when I eat sushi Sushi Ya Roll - great combination of fish and crab meat, got to get this for sure! There was two more rolls we got that I don't remember the names of. But it's not a big deal cause I wouldn't have recommended those anyway. They were not good. One had shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna. And the other resembled a Rainbow roll, and the salmon was truly gross. It was rubbery and just uneatable. I would of given them four stars, but serving the nasty salmon is a no no. Also, though there was only two tables occupied..the service was very lacking. We definitely ordered one too many rolls, but finished off the whole thing. It was a remarkable feat because their rolls are not small and have a good serving of rice. The appetizers are the best part. Some rolls are better than others. Note: They are closed on Saturdays..which I thought was weird.

Nothing spectacular about this place other than the fact that it's the cheapest sushi around. It's hard to pass that up in my opinion. However, it's really small so expect to have to wait and/or fight for a spot to eat. I was debating between 3 and 4 stars, but I love me some sushi, and I love cheap (I know, I know....a horrible combination, but I just can't help it).

It's a really tiny restaurant. If you get all-you-can-eat sushi, there's one-hour limit. The price is $21.95 during lunch and $24.95 during dinner. We went for a la carte lunch. We ordered several rolls and different kinds of sushi. The fish tastes fresh. The prices are pretty reasonable. Their California roll with salmon crunches on top is interesting.

I went back today and since it was memorial day, most people were still out of town and we were the first ones at the restaurant. 1. Ordered the white tuna first and it was disgusting. The fish came out frozen and didn't taste very well. 2. Ordered century roll and there was too much mayo and spicy oil on it. Eating that roll made me want to throw up. 3. Later, I got a stomach ache. The fish definitely wasn't on par this time. The cuts of the fish weren't good either. I would've put one star, but it may be because we got a different chef from last time. The quality definitely went downhill though. I'm not sure if I will go back anytime soon.

I was RAISED on sushi. This is my favorite sushi spot of all time!!! PRO's: -Great all you can eat sushi price if you are a sushi-monster -Quality is TOP NOTCH -VERY generous portions of fish with sushi orders (sometimes they even throw in pieces of sashimi) -Small, very personal, friendly atmosphere and chefs ULTIMATE PRO's: -Their happy hour is AT ALL TIMES!!! SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!!! You will not find a better happy hour in the world! CON's: -The older waitress can have very bad days but very nice days just as equally. Just be nice, shutup and eat the sushi. You're not going there to get a back massage (go next door to Green Tree Massage for that! Great place!!!) -Parking is limited BUT circle the block and there is loads of street parking on the east side (short walk)

We started coming to this place when we first moved to Pasadena...even after moving to Glendale we still LOVE this place!! The staff is incredibly nice and the food is delicious..my favorite is the heart attack, lobster roll, and ofcourse their salmon, tuna, albacore sashimi...BEST PLACE the parking is really small but so worth it!!

50% off sushi! wait that's their regular everyday price LOL :P Sushi prices are very reasonable and it tastes pretty darn good for what it is. The interior is pretty small, just a few tables and the bar. BEER IS CHEAP here! it's cheaper to order a pint of beer then to order soda. no joke! $1 a pint of draft beer (coors light). and its not just during happy hour either! big bottle of Asahi is like $3.50. damn! Wish they were open late!

I absolutely love Sushi Ya's all-you-can-eat menu. Anytime I need a Sushi fix, this is the place I go to. I haven't had one single bad roll here.. EVER. The chefs are quick and pretty attentive to your orders. It gets a 5 star rating for food. Oops.. but there's this little thing called service.. There's an old Japanese lady that takes care of the customers at the bar and tables. Don't expect a warm and friendly greeting with tons of personal service when you walk through the door. Instead, expect to get ONE, and I mean one glass of water, one set of chopsticks, one napkin, etc. If you need another one or a simple refill on your water, good luck. And if you do get her attention, you tends to give off this sour look on her face that screams "excuse me, but shut up and eat your damn food." In fact my first time there I as wearing an Obama shirt and she called me no good and told me to leave. Of course I smiled and played dumb, but on the inside I was pretty pissed off. If there sushi wasn't so awesome I'd never come back. So Sushi Ya loses one star in my eyes. Recommendations: All-you-can-eat.. Period, end of sentence. Warnings: The old lady.. oh and the parking is really, REALLY bad.

Sushiya is the place to come for some interesting and tasty rolls. Obviously better than any sushi buffet, this place is good enough to satisfy my occasional sushi craving, but definitely nothing exceptional. They have a lot of rolls with unagi, which I love. Their salmon is so incredibly pink, it definitely doesn't look like the typical salmon you get anywhere else. I also had some of their hamachi toro, which tasted super smooth and delicious. Basically, if you really like sushi but don't have 5-star restaurant expectations, this is the place to go. Way better than any buffet, and with reasonable prices Cons: The parking lot is tiny and a pain in the ass to get into and out of. And I went on a pretty busy Sunday night, and there was still only the one lady serving everybody. Made service a bit slow, but it's fine if you have friends to chat with.

Been here a few times with cohorts. 25 usd for all you can eat, great deal. But, not with bones. Cheap crap beer. I like the rolls. Seriously, the 2 times, I had bones in both. Not good. My wife would divorce me if I took her here. LOL.

I love this place. Its my favorite sushi spot. I've tried many of the rolls at Sushi Ya, but I think everyone should try the Century Roll. I crave for the Century Roll all the time. *drool.* Forgot what's in it but, its topped with chunky pieces of salmon dressed in spicy mayo. Everything about this place is superb. Friendly sushi chefs, food comes out pretty fast (when sitting at the sushi bar), and pretty good quality of raw fish.

Sushi ya good service along with a happy environment. If your looking for a quick sushi fix without digging deep into your pocket then sushi ya is the place to be. You Have to Try the Jasmine Roll when you go there!!!

I'm giving this place 4 stars out of respect of what this place used to be. I used to go here a lot and LOVED this place. The owner was very friendly and treated us really well. The all you can eat was great and the staff was very attentive (though the tea server lady acts kind of grumpy, she's actually pretty nice). The sushi you get isn't the best quality you can get, but it's decent with large pieces of fish for a reasonable price. Their Jasmine Rolls are flat out awesome, but if you eat too many you'll probably feel a bit sick due to the oil. But they are tasty! Beer is cheap if you want beer. The reason I'm tempted to rate them a 3* now though is because the owner frequently isn't there (last 3 times I've went he wasn't there) and he has a new staff. They're capable, but from my experience no where near as friendly as the staff before. It just doesn't feel the same.

I've been coming to this place for years. Their rice is firm with a good texture. The place is on the small side, so it can get crowded. They have all the normal sushi pieces and great roll selection, plus their own twist on rolls.

I had an opportunity to visit this place and experience what some think it is the best in Pasadena and others think it is a rejects joint. Because I spent money like other yelpers at Sushiya, I definitely am entitled to place my opinion. Knowing that this place has the all you can eat sushi in one hour for a fixed price, I felt that this could be a rip off but I still went just for the experience. Before I went in I thought should I go with the expectation that Sushi gurus have? Or should I just expect to have a nice time? Well that answer will definitely come at the end when you receive the bill. Yes, as many yelpers say...the parking can be a problem. Yes, there is this extremely rude and grouchy lady at the door but at least she took us to the sushi bar within 20 minutes. I asked the chef if he had a recommendation. I noticed that he could not speak Japanese and did not recommend but warned me that only certain types of sushi were available for this deal. As most Sushi lovers know, it does take a Sushi chef at least 10 years to achieve perfection. Many people miss this part and do not realize what takes to be a sushi chef. That's why sushi is such a piece of art that many non-sushi chefs cannot prepare. You can't just put an Asian person behind the counter and have him prepare this kind of food. But then I was not at Nobu or Sushi-Gen either so tone down my friend! Anyway, a long time ago, I read an article from a food critic in Tokyo who said, if you place your wasabi inside your soy sauce and mix it, this will let the chef know how experienced you are about this type of food. The chef will respond with either good or poor service. Most likely poor as he does not have to give you a special treatment because he knows you are not an expert. There is a dilemma about mixing the wasabi inside the soy sauce. They say that if the chef wanted for that to happen, he would have done it for you before serving you. They say the best is to place a hint of wasabi on top of the fish followed by slightly dipping your Sushi into your soy sauce. At least we are in California where many like to shower their rice with soy sauce. Everything is fair and square Right? Let's move to the experience then. I order some rolls to begin and to my surprise, these rolls were the size of a doughnut. Oh, so they stuff your tummy with rice in order to keep you from complaining because they take up to 20 minutes to serve the next item? The food was NOT fresh at all. Even the miso soup had a kimchee taste as if it was spoiled. Kimchee at a Japanese restaurant? It is possible... The beer was definitely not Sapporo as I had asked. It tasted more like a watered-down corona. No wonder it was only $2.00. In conclusion, the food was bad and they had poor service for the price. Yes, if you think about this, there are so many better Japanese restaurants in L.A. where you may spend even less than $40.00 and get better food and service. As for me and my buddies, NEVER AGAIN. We have our little code that we place to each review so that we know not to make the same mistake and at the same time not to discourage other yelpers who think it's the best place in Pasadena. Some yelpers say this is a rejects joint. Who knows? I just think it is NI SE MONO. I could not give less than one star unfortunately so THERE!!

Their AYCE sushi is a decent deal. Most of the sushi was good, but whatever you do, do NOT get the albacore sushi. It was the worst albacore sushi in my life! Someone would have to pay me a whole lot of money to eat that again, and I'm not even exaggerating. The rolls weren't that great, or maybe we just got the bad ones. Stick w/ the sushi. It's doubtful to get your money's worth without throwing up or enduring a terrible feeling in your stomach after dinner.

Overall, not bad. I had a party of 8 on father's day, and although they dont' normally take reservations, they said they'd try their best to fit us in. Service was typical, and they had 3 chefs behind the counter (none who looked exceptionally skilled). The food itself was just ok. Nothing phenomenal, but not horrible either. Unless I went on a bad day, people who consider this to be "TOP NOTCH" have to be idiots. the quality of the fish was just ok (not super soft). There was no wasabi in my nigiri. The rice was clumped up a little too much, making all the sushi rolls really dense. Everything was made fairly sloppily too. Of course, we were there for all-you-can-eat, so the real Qs were "how did it taste" and "did my stomache care"? Everything tasted ok, and aside from some of the rolls having too much sauce (especially Siracha on the spicy ones) they were good. I can't remember which rolls I ate (too many) but after a bit, they all started tasting the same... I'd compare the quality to being almost as good as Midori sushi in Studio city. but at least here they let part of your party eat a-la carte if they dont' want AYCE. overall, if you're craving AYCE sushi, it's pretty good. if you're looking for GOOD sushi, i'd look for something else.

This is my favorite sushi place, if not my favorite restaurant. I love the sushi chefs, and even the little old japanese waitress who I have nicknamed Yoda, since she looks exactly like the star wars character. I just call her that in my head, don't actually call her that. But the atmosphere is the true definition of "hole in the wall". Sushiya is in this little mini mall, that you would never enter because it looks so sketchy. Don't let this fool you, its very pleasant inside. The food is always great, it even flirt with perfection sometimes. Every time I try a new sushi place, I always feel it doesn't compare to sushiya. It's the best all you can eat deal I've found, second to Midori sushi, but sushiya always comes out first. The jasmine hand roll is the kicker. I don't know what's in it, but I believe it holds the meaning of life in between its delicious ingredients. I always go for my birthday, and sometimes they even surprise me with free green tea ice cream, and that's true love if I've ever seen it. I'm in love with a girl, and her name is Sushiya.

Great Sushi!!! Really affordable and tasty however their customer service can be much better. We constantly had to flag our waitress down to attend to us :( Also it's a small hole in the wall joint so parking can be hard to find and if you go during dinner or lunch you may have a hard time finding a seat as well. Other then that wonderful spot to eat sushi!

Had a horrible sushi chef, pretty much was a douchebag. For some reason the owner apologized to my uncle rather than myself for it. I spent about 30 bucks just to get treated like shit. I don't recommend this place to anyone really.

My friend was going to eat sushi for dinner and so i decided to tag along and asked for the name and city of the place...sushi ya. So, what would any fellow yelper would do when they know they will be going to an unknown restaurant? Yelp it! of course! and so it started... After reading a few of the reviews, i decided to go in with my expectations below low. I was already expecting a grumpy little goblin as the hostess, nazi waitress, eeh-ok sushi, horrible parking, and a very small restaurant. Lets start with the goblin and the nazi. Apparently, the waitress was not working today and the goblin reminded me more of someone's grandma that was forced to work to pay bills. All i am going to say about her is that she needs to retire and/or hire a younger manager...she was also wearing the fake-est wig. All in all, i managed to pull a smile out of her. Shes not as bad as the reviews say she is... at least not to me, you just have to treat her as if she was your really old pissy grandma. I can see why people say that the parking is horrible, the parking lot was tiny. But, none-the-less i got very lucky and got there as a car was leaving. Now comes the food...correct me if im wrong, yellow tail is supposed to be white.. not yellow, right? We had the AYCE, the jasmine handroll was alright, nothing special. Actually, come to think of it, everything was not that special. Also, the rice was warm... which made my nigiri taste... different...and not a pleasant different. Chef was friendly at least. will i come back? only if someone else pays for my meal. Its not that bad as long as its not coming from my pocket, but then again, anything..i shouldnt say anything, ALMOST anything edible that doesnt come out of my pocket its not that bad.

When it comes to all you can eat sushi, this place kind of sucks. There's very little to praise about this place. The sushi is low rated, and the variety is a joke. I can't recommend this place at all.

Okey doke, I'm going to have to give this place a two. I don't want to but here's why. First, parking is hard. Really super duper hard. It shares this teeny lot with a few other places and if you want to try to find yourself a spot, be prepared to waste a lot of fuel and time while looking. The food actually is pretty good here truth be told. I've been a few times and each time it has been fresh and prepared right. But the service... There's an older woman there who waits on you. I'm sure she's really nice; I have no reason to think otherwise. I think she's just really rushed all the time and thinks giving you extra napkins and water when you ask for them is wasteful. I'm not the type who always asks for a full glass if I know I'm not going to finish it (for example, if I'm nearing the end of my time there) because I think that's wasteful. Usually when I ask for more water or another napkin it's because I need it. I dropped one of my sticks one time, too, and that didn't go over well with her. I told her I needed a new set and she looked at me funny (not angrily, just confused) and told me to use the ones I had put aside. I told her I dropped half the set and it didn't seem to make a difference. I don't know. It's just not the kind of experience I like to have. I tried to think about it from her perspective. I'm sure people are wasteful many times. But the thing is, when you ask for something extra at a restaurant, you really should be able to get it without being made to feel guilty. That's pretty much it. Food's good but service is lacking and finding a parking spot is rough.

This place is like a hole-in-the-wall but really, hole-in-4-walls so that makes it a restaurant. The entire place is very small.. fitting I'm guessing, no more than 20 people total. We came here for a friend's birthday and I had no idea we were going to do the All-You-Can-Eat thing until I sat down and my friends already told the server that's what we're all doing! The rolls were decent, fairly good I should say. Between the 6 of us, we ordered a bunch of rolls to share, which included the Bacardi roll, Lobster roll (3 times!), Mexican handroll, Eel Special Roll, Spicy Scallop Roll, and I can't recall at the moment, but 10 other different rolls! In terms of variety, it may seem like they have a lot of choice, but really, I notice that all their rolls just mainly consist of shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and california roll for the most part. There weren't that many variations in their creation. But it all tasted pretty good. And their fish all tasted decent.. not the freshest I've had, but it was fairly decent. The Bacardi roll had a nice flaming presentation to it, but I couldn't taste the Bacardi at all! Should have told them to hold the alcohol and just give it to me as a shot... I'd be happier that way! haha, Anyway, I can see myself coming back here. The service is good, and the a la carte menu seems interesting, which is something I want to try next time especially given they listed things such as Monkey Brains, Heart Attack, Kamikaze (sushi), etc! But for All-You-Can-Eat? I've had better at other places that charge HALF that price. All-You-Can-Eat dinner here is $23.95 per person. I've had sushi buffets and all you can eat for $15 a head and it tasted just as good if not better! Finally, after trying to make up for $24x6 people worth of sushi, we all came out in too much food kind of pain, so I'm not sure if that's good pain anymore... it hurt! no more all-you-can-eat here for me! but maybe the monkey brains next time... hahaha

Chose this place after looking for an AYCE sushi on yelp. Very small and packed. (I noticed a group who had been waiting for a table since before we got there and they finally got a table like at least halfway into our meal. I took it to mean that their food was worth the wait) The sushi chefs are Korean and extremely friendly. You'll have an easier time communicating if you do so in Korean. Our man knew it was our first time so he gave us the Jasmine handroll to try which was good but too filling because it was FAT. Also he gave us baked mussels which was covered in BOMB ASS sauce. And he also gave us another dish that I don't know what it was and it was alright. But back to the real sushi..portion sizes were decent. The more salmon we ordered, the longer the pieces became haha. I wouldn't say the fish was the freshest I've tasted, but it was pretty good. I would definitely come back.

My friend and I came here because we heard they had the all u can eat sushi that they make fresh for you! it was ok, however something my friend had did not taste right to her and my soft shell crab was not very fresh...other than that it was pretty average. I would only come back here if someone else wanted to, but I wouldn't come back here cause I missed it....if you want to have the all you can eat sushi experience that they make as you order it Kiku sushi in Monrovia is a waaaay better experience:)

I first discovered Sushi Ya last December when googling for all you can eat sushi in the Pasadena area. My girlfriend and I decided to give this place a shot and, I have to say, I am glad we did. The atmosphere here is very "hole-in-the-wall"-ish, as many others have said on here. But it definitely works for this place. While the quality of the sushi is not as spectacular as you might get at some of the more pricey sushi restaurants, it is definitely good. Normally, all you can eat menus skimp on quality- this place does not. The chefs are friendly and so is the "old lady", once you get to know her. I highly recommend giving this place more than one visit...once you are a repeat customer, they become more lenient on the all you can eat rules and even throw a little something extra your way, from time to time.

    (4)
  • Christina I.

Fresh fish, great sushi & friendly staff. I'd recommend sitting at the bar. The place itself is tiny, so it's not convenient for a large group. Their all you can eat special is a great deal- totally recommend this place to sushi lovers. Basic rules for a you can eat, you have to finish everything.

This is the best ayce sushi I have been to. The baked mussels are my favorite along with the Sushi ya roll and the Jasmine handroll. The albacore is also really good.

  • Vince The G.

The fish was pretty fresh. They let us pick which peice we wanted. ALL YOU CAN EAT. the old lady cuts you off and makes you leave the sushi chefs are amazing. They hook you up. just be nice to them :) They give you things that aren't on the menu if they like you old lady kicks you out. old lady kicks you out right after the hour. But she said if you are eating regular..then you can stay. Sushi chef nice..old lady not so nice. haha maybe shes nicer if you eat regular sushi. It gets full fast because there is very little seating. Thats good thought because then you know that their fish is fresh because it gets eaten! The regular prices are not too bad.

This is one of those places that you'd never go to unless someone said hey go here! Well that's how my friend heard of this place and decided to take me there during my stay in Pasadena. When arriving you have 2 options, a la carte or all you can eat. $24 for all you can eat seems like a deal, and it is, but you have to pound some serious raw fish and sushi rolls to get your deal. We both did just that, and paid the price. It was incredibly worth it, but I've never been so full in my life. That of course is not Sushi Ya's fault but my own glutto-for-wasabi weakness that brought me to my knees. The rolls were good, minus the bacardi roll which comes out ON FIRE! The sushi is very generous, quite fresh, and very good. The only place I have had better sushi is in Hawaii, but I was twice as hungry there as I was when arriving here so this may be some of the best sushi around.

    (4)
  • Chris L.

"I've had much better" really sums up how I feel about this place. Probably the best cheap sushi meal you can have in this area of Pasadena though. But when I eat sushi, I'd like my fish and rice to taste really fresh, which sometimes isn't really guaranteed here. The sushi chefs also don't put together the sushi rolls very well. How do I tell? Each cut roll piece falls apart when I touch them with chopsticks. The restaurant is on the small side, with very limited seating. It can get really cramped in there as it's a bunch of tables lined up against a single bench seat (no longer than 15-feet) that all the customers share.

  • John K.

This is the best tasting all you can eat sushi restaurant I have been to within the Pasadena area. The food was great, the prices were great, and the chefs were great. The only not so great things were the one hour policy and the annoying old waitress. Not only does the food have to be ordered within an hour, it also has to be completely consumed within that time. We had one handroll left, and the old waitress told us that if we did not finish it we would be charged extra. The extra charge policy was understandable, however the old waitress was downright rude and disrespectful. We told her to give us some time to finish the last handroll. She said our time was up and that she had to watch us eat it immediately. We ended up leaving a lousy tip, which is unfortunate for the other waitress and the sushi chefs.

I was here with two friends the other week and it was our first time here. My first impression from the parking lot was that it was a tiny little restaurant in the middle of nowhere. When we get inside, its even smaller then it looked. We then see the lady waitress that everyone seems to talk so negatively about. I think she was nice, but she's very busy as she was the only one waiting on everything. Since this place was tiny, the wait was long. The lady waitress basically will sit you wherever fits. She asked me and my two other friends if we wanted to sit at the end of the bar where there were two seats.. two seats!! We almost settled for it since the long was a bit long, but we held out for a table. As for the food, me and my friends ate the "all you can eat" special. Its pretty cheap, but please READ THE FINE PRINT!! We didn't read it and it came around and bit us in our wallets. You have one hour to finish what you order and what you don't finish, they'll charge you per roll. The food was good for sushi, but I do think some of their special rolls were a bit heavy on sauces they put on it. Since I can't recall details of my experience, all I can say is this place is worth trying if you're a sushi fan. This place isn't much of a sashimi place from the looks of it. The beer here is ridiculously inexpensive so this place is worth the try. Just don't get fooled by the "all you can eat" deal. Just order the rolls unless you can knock out 4+ large rolls yourself. I'll come back for the sushi since I think their prices are well priced.

  • Susie S.

The food is ok but the service sucks a big one. We did the AYCE and the waitress stopped us after 45 minutes. She then proceeded to tell us 50 times that we'd have to pay money if we didn't finish what was left on the tray. Since they refused to make us anymore, finishing the food wasn't a problem. They also stiffed us because they gave us all of our rolls first and then cut us off before any of the nigiri came out. Total cheap a$$es.

Updated Review: I have been there many times now. The service is definitely below par, which is why I am giving it 2 stars. There is a general inattentiveness and curtness by their main server, which is not only annoying, but rude (I am talking about the older lady who is always there). Not always a pleasurable experience, especially when you are paying $30 for dinner. I think I will be going to Midori Sushi in the S.F. valley more often.

I love sushi. My first review on Yelp was for Midori Sushi in Studio City. I eat sushi probably every two weeks or so. I love sushi. Sushiya, I don't love so much. I decided to come here on a recommendation of a friend, who has taken me to many many restaurants in the Los Angeles area. He's usually very good at his choices and he absolutely loves Sushiya. My reaction? Ehh. It's not a bad sushi restaurant, it's just not up to my standards I guess. Or I caught it on an off day, who knows. Sushiya's decor/location isn't great. The plaza (if you can call it that) that it was in is tiny, with a very small parking lot. It's right on the corner and easy to miss. Inside, it's small. I went for lunch so it wasn't crowded but I can't even imagine eating there for dinner with a group - just a tad too small for me. I had their all you can eat lunch with my brother ($20 for each of us). The sushi was ok. I was impressed by their salmon and tuna that they brought out first - It was fresh and nice and thick. But their scallops were way gross (usually my absolute favorite, the sauce they had on it was disgusting) and their mackerel was a little fishy. I think if I were to come here again, I would just order a couple orders (it's pretty cheap individually) instead of the all you can eat. If you want all you can eat, go to Midori Sushi. But I can see it being a good place to drop by, just for a couple quick pieces.

By far the best Affordable yummy sushi ever! My brother and I have been coming to this small joint for the past few years....and I have been to many other sushi places, somehow always find myself coming back for more. yes it's a little snug inside so group dining probably not a good idea. I do think they are kid friendly, but one kid at a time. My favorite rolls are the dragon, Jasmine and the assorted sushi. Yummy! The chefs are friendly and always make you feel welcomed.

Ordered their sushi combo (8 pieces of sushi plus a tuna roll, $12.95) for lunch recently. Also added two more pieces of salmon sushi for $1.98 (part of the 50% off sale price). I thought that the fish was generously cut and tasted fresh. However, my rating for this restaurant goes way down after witnessing an inch-long cockroach crawling across the floor, mere inches away from the diners seated at the sushi bar. I'm glad that I wasn't sitting there. The other diners noticed the cockroach, too. They just laughed about it and continued eating their sushi heartily. I kind of lost my appetite after that. Bottom line: This would have been a three-star establishment for me, but minus two stars for the unfortunate appearance of the cockroach.

The Sushi is pretty good but not a fan of the atmosphere. The lady that works there ALWAYS messes up the check and she's usually the reason I don't go back. But the sushi is pretty good.

This is some of the freshest fish in all of Pasadena at prices comparable to Kabuki rather than Sushi of Naples. The restaurant only seats about 15 people plus 10 at the bar so expect to wait a bit for a table but its worth it. The all you can eat has serious rules so make sure you want to eat a massive bowl of rice and will actually enjoy $25+ of sushi. The sashimi that Jason brings us fresh daily is absolutely to die for - especially the Hamachi (Yellowtail) and Sake (Salmon). I have received less than excellent service here but its a small price to pay for freshly flown in fish and excellent fried tempura rolls. I think its worth it - especially fi you sit at the bar and don't expect 4 star service.

I'm such a value eater! I love getting value for my buck! There is only a few places I know of in LA where you could get value like this! For 25 dollars you get, one hour worth of all you can eat sushi! And the best part about it is that for an additional 5 bucks you can get a pitcher of beer! Com'n now, where you get sushi plus beer for that low of a price! Granted now, the quality isn't top notch, like Nobu or anything, however it is good if you love value! The other thing I should warn you about is that there is a super long wait. The place is super tiny (seats about 20-30) people at most, and its usually first come, first serve; so be ready to go there and wait. And if your wondering about parking? Well, there are a couple of spots in the open strip mall, but you'll be lucky if you can land one of those! For the rest of us, its called walking! My favorite experience is when you read the menu they have RULES of all you can eat. My personal favorite is no making rice balls out!!! Seeing that alone is worth the price of admission! Enjoy!

4.5 rating What I like about this place is that the chefs are generous with the sushi. For the rolls, the california rolls are larger than most sushi locations I have been too. The sushi is about sashimi sized from my experience with other sushi places. For the all you can eat bit, they do sure give you a lot in one dish than instead of giving you little by little each time. This is one of those all you can eat sushi places where there isn't a large disparity between the quantity and quality issue. Almost all of the fish I have ate have been more than average but there maybe some days when one of the fish isn't the freshest. The reason why this place did not receive a 5/5 is because of the "cute" old lady. If you're new and nice, she'll open up to you and treat you nice but I don't see her treating everyone else just as warmly. A friend of mine has told me there is another cashier/waitress who works when the old lady isn't in and she is nicer so I have yet to come in when that has happened. If you are new and would like to try a new taste, I would suggest the Bacardi roll.

Jasmine. Hand. Roll. Seriously. When I eat sushi, I usually don't even order rolls. I'm more of a nigiri and sashimi guy, but whenever I go to Sushi Ya for their AYCE, I always start and end with a Jasmine Hand Roll. Their white tuna is also amazing, and everything else is above average for an AYCE joint. Sometimes there is a small wait though, since the restaurant is tiny and only seats about 30 people.

Sushi Ya is a tiny restaurant located in a not so attractive neighborhood plaza on Altadena Dr. A big plus for me, literally within walking distance from my place. I came here based on the glowing reviews. While the food was not bad at all (we ordered mostly sashimi and sushi rolls), it wasn't phenomenal. The sashimi is decently fresh but the sauces on the rolls are a bit too heavy, and I'm a person who likes strong flavors. The chefs also like to put sesame seeds on everything, even the sashimi, which I didn't appreciate. Other than that, the short old waitress many have mentioned is a bit on the rude side, but is tolerable given my experiences w/typical Asian establishments, really nothing astonishingly rude or any unacceptable behavior. My sister & I went on a weekday prime dinner time and didn't have any trouble finding a seat, but later on there were people waiting. They are quite creative on their specialty rolls and their prices are acceptable, not expensive, not cheap. We two Chinese girls racked up $50+ on our tab. I'd go there again for a sushi fix just cuz it's close to where I live and it's pretty good. Nothing amazing here though. Give it a try if you live close by and like specialty rolls with lots of sauce.

I've been to over 20 different sushi resturants in the la, oc, ie, sgv, and sfv. and by far this is the best one. Jason, the owner, is very good at what he does. There's a roll he does with spicy tuna, avocado, and wrapped with a white soy paper. It's called a Jasmine Roll here are some pics farm4.static.flickr.com/… farm4.static.flickr.com/… farm4.static.flickr.com/… farm4.static.flickr.com/… farm4.static.flickr.com/… farm4.static.flickr.com/…

This is one of my favorite sushi joints in Pasadena. The Good: AFFORDABLE sushi!!! Laid back atmosphere. Not pretentious. Kirin draft beer for $1.50!!! Cordial staff & Chefs. You can't get sushi this cheap anywhere else in Pasadena. Sometimes I wonder how they make any money! This place has developed quite a following as I noticed that 90% of the customers are loyal patrons. Cons: Limited parking (shares lot with taco place and a massage spot). Limited seating LImited variety Quality of the fish is a hit or miss Presentation of the rolls are so so.

One of the better sushi places in the Pasadena area. The nigiri is fresh, and I love getting the rolls and kitchen items. Service is excellent, and there's always a good amount of customers here, most of whom I'm guessing are regulars and locals.

Awesome fresh sushi, large portions, very affordable price. I have yet to find a sushi joint that is better than this one. The waitresses are the nicest people ever. Try the spicy crunch and volcano!! Looks like they've lost one of the chefs, so some of the food tastes a little different, like the bacardi roll. Nevertheless, it's still worth going to, at least once a month. You won't be disappointed!!

after eating at this place, i will probably never eat at another sushi joint EVER. the AYCE is ridiculous arythmaticulous! the sushi is high quality and all the specialty rolls are included! the only thing i have to say about this place is that SUNNY is slow as fcku! other than that, give the little MF a break.

Why 5 Stars out of 5 you say? Sushiya is a small Sushi restaurant on the Corner of Altadena Drive and Foothill Blvd. Don't be fooled by the outside of it, becuase the inside is always what counts when it comes to food places. First of all, I would like to say that their all you can eat sushi special is just amazing! You can eat as much sushi as you possibly can before you launch one at the sushi chefs. Btw the Sushi Chefs Shawn and Jason make possibly the best sushi I have had in a very long time, and they are very nice people too. The service is quick and efficient, you won't be dissapointed. Did I mention the all-you-can-eat special is at a reasonable price and won't leave the average person with an empty wallet. The special is priced around $20+ for all the sushi you have ever dreamed of. Another thing the place is famous for is it's 50% off sushi specials. If you are not in the mood for a serious overload on sushi, get a few Tempora Rolls or Spicy Tuna Hand rolls for half the price. But when you think about it, the all you can eat special is probably your best bet. There Sushi is obviously extremely fresh, probably straight from the ocean, so you don't have to worry about any old sushi. While Todai might have a similar special of all you can eat sushi, they leave it out all day in a buffet style where it gets all old and probably picked at by all the other customers. So when you have your dimes and nickels saved up for the month, there's only one place you should spend it on, and that is Sushiya!!

We got here at around 5, so it wasn't too crowded and there was plenty of parking. We seated ourselves and got right to ayce-ing it. Our sushi chef was very attentive and made sure we always had something in front of us. I'll admit the sushi craftsmanship was a little below average, as evidenced by the large amounts of rice that fell off my sushi rolls, but it all still tasted delicious. Most notable are the jasmine hand rolls and the bacardi roll which are dinero in the banco, and the ono sushi was damn good too. I didn't have the privilege of being served by the dragon lady, but she treated the other customers very well, and even took the time to make some rookie chopsticks for a couple of kids, which I think was very sweet of her. I've never seen a more polarized string of reviews on Yelp before. But I must say, after eating there yesterday I will keep coming back, esp for them JHR's.

The cheesy location in a strip mall doesn't phase me, most good places on Sushi Row in Studio City are in strip malls! I am very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hamachi here at Sushi Ya. The tempura is also very light and crispy, not oily at all. Both remind me greatly of Hide on Sawtelle. Great find!

Sushiya is my go-to restaurant for a quick sushi fix. It's a hole in the wall located in a strip mall (neighbors include a semi-sketchy massage parlor), but the rolls are cheap and delicious. The freshness of the fish fluctuates between expectedly so-so and surprisingly good. Kirin at $2 a pop doesn't hurt either. What really makes Sushiya is the quirky atmosphere. The place is small with only a few tables; definitely not good for a large group. The regular staff is composed of two friendly sushi chefs (Korean, of course) and a tiny elderly waitress who always seems sort of grumpy. They're always playing Air Supply or Michael Bolton or some other cheesy love ballad on the radio. Last time I came, the place smelled sort of like a bathroom, but we just shrugged and dug into our unagi. All in all, a great place to fill up on cheap rolls and Japanese beer.

Actually the best thing about this place is $1 - $1.50 beer on tap. Yes, on tap! Their sushi is good but portions are a bit smaller then what they used to be. Still a great place with great people. Best sushi in pasadena still. And make sure you check your bill. The waitress is slow and is not detail-oriented. You'll need to call her when you need her.

This place is awesome!!! The jasmine hand roll is to die for. I can't stop eating it. Very reasonably priced and great rolls. I highly recommend this sushi joint to anyone who enjoys tasty and creative rolls. The owner and staff are fantastic. The only draw back is the size of the place and the wait sometimes to receive your check.

i'm a bit reluctant to rate sushi ya so well - i'm afraid i won't be able to get seated! the place is quite small, but its the best sushi in pasadena that i've found, and at a great price! The staff is friendly and helpful.

Deeeelicious! This is a great hole-in-the-wall place. The sashimi cuts are fresh and fatty. The hamachi tomo was delicious and I definitely recommend the salmon skin roll. My friend and I sat at the bar and the service was pretty fast. There's a little old japanese lady that runs around and operates the place. The sushi chefs are japanese. The place is pretty small and seats a limited number of people. During the work week lunch period the place packed up pretty fast. The prices aren't too bad either. Beers are $2 each.

I used to love this place and would come here all the time with my boyfriend. The beer is super cheap and the prices are reasonable for what they give you. I was always a little grossed out by the restaurant itself (its not the cleanest looking place), but continued to come anyway. Now I will never be back again. After our last visit, my boyfriend became so violently ill that he ended up in the hospital that same night with horrible food poisoning. He ate some bad white tuna and definitely paid the price; he has never been sicker. We will not be back .

OK, so 7 yelpers before me really loved this place so I had to try it out. I was told by some friends that they preferred this place over Shogun. I must have went at a bad time because the food and service wasn't even close to the comments made here. First off, I went with 5 other friends of mine for lunch. When we arrived, and the waitress noticed we were deciding where to sit, she also mentioned that if we wanted the menu with the other hot combo meals, we'd have to sit on the table rather than the sushi bar. When we decided to sit on the table, the waitress shoved us all on two tables (3 on each side) and didn't want us to take up any of the other tables. Oh yeah, this is before any other customers arrived (and by the time we left, there would have been plenty of space for us to use 3 tables) Secondly, the waitress frequently disappeared and would take partial orders. For example, she'd get the drinks order of 4 people then disappear. She'd get the sushi order of the 2 all you can eat, then disappear. She'd bring the sushi plates for the other 2 people, then disappear. .. as you can tell this was not going well. Now lets get to our orders, the reason why this place gets 2 stars rather than 3 is because while the presentation of the all you can eat sushi's was amazingly startling ... +20 sushi pieces arranged on a big plate was pretty cool. However, I wasnt pleased to have my sushi order mixed with my other friends. I don't mind sharing my sushi, but still, I like my sushi on it's own dish. Finally, we were kind of rushed for time when we left, but I noticed the waitress didn't do a good job of matching the prices with what we ordered. One of the all you can eater's asked for a seperate check... And he got his... BUT the cost of his meal was still on our group's receipt. Yeah, I should put them to 1 star but I'll be nice cause the food was ok, it wasn't horrible. So my suggestion is this, if you go, go solo or on a date or pretend your group isn't a group. That way you can avoid the hassle we went through.

My boyfriend, son and I absolutely looove this place! We go to sushi all the time and wanted to try something new, so we yelped this place... From the outside you may wonder if its a trustworthy because its small, and in a little shopping center but trust me; completely worth it! First off, the draft beers are $2 dollars, far from the $6.50 you pay for large beers at other places. They have an all you can eat sushi deal as well as good priced reg. items. We love the jasmine roll, a must try. Point is, it is a really great place. BTW, only downside is its tiny inside. only about 4 tables and 10 sushi bar spots...

25 dollars all you can eat. the rolls are good. i recommend getting the "Jasmin" hand roll. i remember taking a friend here couple years ago for his bday. we would order a bottle of sake and jason (owner) would give us a free bottle. and this would go back and forth for a couple of bottles till the point he had to put his knife down risking cutting off a finger because he was drunk. haha. we all were. top 3 all you can eat sushi in my book.

I came here two days ago with my wife and sisters for dinner. The place is small, the parking lot is even smaller. My sisters had to drive around and came back for a parking spot, now I'm talking about early Wednesday evening, to put things in perspective. The place is about half full by the time we were seated. We went for the AUCE menu, the food was ok, I didn't think it was all that great, you can tell the fish was not super fresh, and they put quite a bit of rice in the sushi to fill you up. The old lady waitress knocked over a glass of ice water on my wife; so glad it wasn't the hot tea but her jeans were wet rest of the evening. Sucks. The waitress apologized, and we didn't make a fuss about it, because she is old like a granny. In the end, she told us she gave us a discount. When I checked the bill, I found that there was one less $3 beer on the tap. Really! I rather she didn't tell me with a straight face, because I didn't expect anything; now I kinda felt insulted. Anyway, even if it wasn't for this incident, I probably wouldn't be back or recommend it, there are many places with fresh sushi and reasonable price.

Amazing food for an amazing price! The only drawback is the size of the place. Don't come expecting any ambiance - just really good sushi at really good prices. They are a bit heavy on the avacado (they put it in everything) but still great quality fish.

excited to try a new sushi place, recommended by a good friend. i ordered hot sake to start. waitress said, only cold, we can't make it hot, machine is broken. i asked if they could heat it up with a microwave or even in a pot on the stove. she said no. i asked if i could speak to the person who was saying no. no. then she said they were out of sake. we left. so which was it? lying to a customer is not acceptable sushi ya. disappointed as i had been excited to try a new sushi place, it could have been the beginning of a beautiful relationship. it was not to be. so disappointed.

I come here for lunch $20. This is good AYCE sushi and I have been to a lot, comparable to Midori in LA. The gripes are bad service do not sit at tables! Rice quality sucks, no wasabi under nigiri, and its a hole in the wall ( but some ppl like that). The fish is important to me and it was pretty fresh and they give you thick cuts ( I hate it when AYCE gives you really thin or small cuts). I love Salmon and Yellowtail which theirs is great, they have all the other nigiri too. I must admit you have to try the flaming bacardi roll (snapper wrapped around cali) and their volcano roll. The Jasmine roll is a little too much they use too much crab meat and mayo. So sit at the bar avoid the old lady and dont try the heart attack or monkey brain and you will have a good experience!

This place is no where near where I live yet we still venture here regularly for an inexpensive and great tasting dinner. Not to mention, happy hour is ALL DAY every day they are open (six days a week, open to close, and no, i'm not kidding.) It's $2 beers or $9 pitchers. They frequently change the taps but they range from kirin, sam adams, fat tire, blue moon, and 1 budget beer like coors light. Yes, this place is small, sometimes the service isn't the greatest in the world, but it's family run & they are always enthusiastic when we walk in the door. I've never ordered the "all you can eat sushi" and quite frankly, why on earth would anyone? It's sushi, not some dive vegas buffet. it's always better to have 3-6 people and just order family style. that way everyone can pick out a few rolls and everyone gets the best options and even with a few pitchers tapped on everyone still only pays $25 per person, this never fails us. In fact, I went just last night and with 5 people we ordered around 12 rolls, 3 pitchers of beer and total was 125 almost on the button, thus still making it $25 per person. Everything is always fresh tasting and they waste no time getting the food out to you. I find it's best to go about an hour before they close because it's typically empty and service is quicker. The only bad thing i have to say about this place is that sushi is not a dish you can take home so bring your appetite cause you'll certainly need it.

We were curious about this place from the yelp reviews and ever since we've started eating the terrific fish tacos at Estrella's across the lot, so we finally went in. The $1 beer caught my eye and we decided on the mixed sashimi plate. The waitress was a little gruff and the sushi chefs seem to be oblivious to us. Our sashimi was stringy and bland. I don't remember much of anything else, so it was pretty uneventful. Maybe they had an off-day. Don't know if we'll return. Kind of blah all around.

all-you-can-eat sushi place!!! well..there is a time limit, but it's still not bad for the price you pay. For all your sushi lovers out there, i think this place is perfect for you. The fish is fresh and lots of choices. We had all the regular sushi that you would order, and we only paid less than $30 for it. this place is tiny, so better to go early. Once it's filled up, you will have to wait for a LONG time. The japanese mom there is very nice and service is good as well. i didn't give them 5 stars cuz i saw them went out to smoke.

This is probably one of my favorite sushi places and I've tried a lot of sushi! They need to work on their spicy scallops but overall I haven't been disappointed with any of the items I ordered. The heart attack was good and the golden philly melts in your mouth. Service is slow and seating is limited, but worth returning.

this sushi house offers the option of all-you-can-eat sushi/appetizers for 23.95. to the civilian eye, an "all-you-can-eat" sign is deciphered as: all-you-can-eat. however to a highly trained eye, such as mine, i see: "judy, i challenge you to come and stuff your face until you feel like you're about to explode, and when you hiccup some of your food comes back up a little bit and the button on your jean pops and hits the sushi chef inbetween the eyes and you are pretty much immobile for the rest of the night" i gladly accepted this challenge. my friend and i had gone once before and just shared a mixed sashimi platter. we decided to try the all-you-can-eat the next week. we were both very much looking forward to gorging ourselves with all this yummy sushi. but along with the anticipation came an entire week of trash talkin' and not to mention a goodly amount of shmack about who would eat more than the other. i thought he knew me, but i guess not. i almost felt sorry for the poor fellow................almost. thursday night, after a small banana - the fasting began. all i had was water all day friday. yes, it was quite torturous - but i was determined to conquer, defeat, and disgust. we arrived quite early so there was no wait at the sushi bar. we informed the waitress and chef that we were there for the all-you-can-eat and they handed us the specified menu for that. of course there were restrictions as expected, such as not eating the rice with the sushi - but we were only allowed to stay for one hour from the time we were seated. (???) i was quite the hungry yelper by this time as i perused the choices offered to us. my eyes (soon to be regrettably) wandered onto a curiously named appetizer called "monkey brains". the heck? sushi chef: oh, well it's mushroom, with spicy tuna, and cream cheese. all deep fried. my friend: it's up to you if you want it. my stomach: GET IT!!! me: okay, sure - why not. disgusting. it was just as the chef described as they were served to us sliced in half. it tasted as nasty as it looked. blech. dangit stomach! so, of course i didnt finish it. and neither did my friend. so there was a large amount left in front of us. we continued by ordering and eating more sushi - which was actually not so fresh tasting or delicious as what we had in our previous visit. after a little while, the waitress came over AT LEAST 4 times, telling us we had to finish the monkey brain mess they had served to us, in order to request more food or else we'd be charged. what the fudge, woman? so what if we don't finish it?? maybe we're okay with paying the extra charge if we don't finish. and seriously, if i wanted to be nagged about my eating habits, then i would have brought my momz! i got fed up and i asked the owner how much extra it would be if we didn't finish. he told us not to worry and it was okay if we didnt' finish the appetizer. the rule applied specifically to sushi and the uneaten rice balls. thank you! ugh. and of course, as i expected - right at one hour's time the same waitress brought us our check. it's cool though. we ate our money's worth. and then some. i also got to thoroughly disgust my friend so it was still worth all the semi-crappy service. :D *most likely will not return.

This is a small restaurant, three (or was it four) tables and seats at the sushi bar. Maybe it was the day I went, but it gets packed. Prices are reasonable and the service is adequate, friendly, never pushy. The food... well, it's fresh and very good. Try the fatty yellowtail. Haven't had the all you can eat special yet... maybe when I do, this rating will go up to five stars. Conveniantly located next to a donut shop, massage parlor, balloon shop, and taqueria (which is pretty good too), you could park in the lot in the morning and entertain yourself all day.

My fiance & I went on a SERIOUS diet/penance (before our engagement photos,) after a month of gluttony - 2 Thanksgiving dinners, our engagement party, and just unhealthy eating all around. We heard about Sushi-Ya's all you can eat sushi while we were at a party in Anaheim - so it had to be good if they've heard about it behind the Orange Curtain, right? So right after we took our photos we made the drive (all 32 miles) to finally eat CARBS. We looked at the all you can eat menu, but then decided that the sushi was so cheap we could get full before we ate $24 of food. I'm SO glad we made that call! The rice was really starchy and kinda hard. Not like the yummy Japanese rice we're used to. It kinda tasted like mall sushi. If you just want to get full and you're not really a foodie, then it's an okay place to go. Though I'd rather go to Soup Plantation or Hometown Buffet if that were the case.

We went tonight because after a 54-mile bike ride I arrived just a bit too late to buy salmon at my Japanese market on Las Tunas. So I picked up the cute, little, wise and noble wife, and off we went a grand total of five blocks to Sushi Ya. We had read the reviews and braced ourselves for the "treatment" from the waitress, and, guess what, she was totally nice and even made a littel joke about how quickly I drained the first tall Kirin Ichiban, which goes here for $4. The all-you-can eat is $23.95, and although my wife weighs all of 46 kilograms she eats like a Sumo wrestler stranded for a week in Darfur, so it didn't take any arm-twisting to get her to agree to go for it (I was starving, having gotten to within 4 miles of Long Beach on the bike only 40 minutes beforehand). We polished off ten double-order plates, including salmon, hamachi, halibut, unagi, ika, ebi, giant clam, and an assortment of rolls including the "heart attack" which was only mildly spicy to our Thai/Mexican taste buds but interesting nevertheless. Sadly, no uni is on the all-you-can-eat menu, or else I would have bankrupted this establishment for sure.... Come soon becauuse when I bring my friend Roberto V this place surely will go under.... Oh, we arrived at 7pm on a Tuesday, so parking was super easy, as we got the space right in front of the door.

This place is about eating & drinking. You want large tasty rolls from a Sushi chef who won't quit smiling, this is the place. You want to pay your money for atmosphere and presentation instead of fresh fish, find another place. The all-u-can-eat is too tempting so I go for the 50% off rolls. All this talk about sushi, I'm gonna have to go back tonight for dinner and get a Jasmine hand roll!

There are three things that holistically motivates me: 1. Jesus Christ, 2. food, and 3. sports. In the distant future, there will be a new number 2 and that is MY OWN FAMILY. Until then, food will appropriately remain 2nd in my life's motivational hierarchy pedestal. This small sushi restaurant/bar has an 'all-you-can-eat' option in their daily menu. The story begins with my V.P boss raving about this place to the other bosses. For two weeks, all I heard in the office was, 'sushi this, sushi that, if i could leave my wife for sushi i would...blah blah blah.' I could not take it anymore so i went during my hour lunch. I consumed (with no exaggeration) 3 shrimp tempura rolls, 1 lobster roll, 2 crunch rolls, 1 dragon roll, 1 dynamite roll, 1 spider roll, 1 spicy tuna hand roll, 2 yellow-fin tuna sushi, some appetizers and a diet coke. You should have seen the facial expression of the sushi chef; as though he witnessed the most amazing feat accomplished. hahaha. The food was OK. hahaha.

I would not recommend anybody to have their all you can eat sushi. I have to agree with the other yelper that for the price I really perfer Todai. Everything other people talked about are true, they do limit your time to one hour, they do charge if you leave any rice ball. the thing I want to point out is quality. Rice is not too much on the sushi, but they ARE NOT sushi rice. they are just regular rice, in fact the rice are too hard, and they are still warm. couple of the fish we order are out of stock, but they don't tell us until the order didn't come up. Th hand rolls are really really bad, they packed way too much rice and the seaweed was soggy. Need I say more? Todai is really better quality, at least they don't limit you one hour and penalize you for left over rice. If you don't like Todai, why would you come here?!

Sushi is not bad at this place. Its just fun to go here cause my friends like going here. A Foo Fighter video was actually filmed there so when you go there you'll see the video played over and over.

Hole in the wall place. Sometimes you can go very wrong with doing all you can eat, but this place is actually pretty good. I ate myself silly and once I recover I'll go back in the future.

this place is great! all kinds of sushi and all you can eat for 20 bucks. the place is small and a hole-in-the-wall. but all that savings goes to good cheap sushi!

First of all before you come here for the all you can eat, you need to have a gameplan. I went here before late at night and sat at a table ordering regular stuff. The place felt small, but the food tasted ok, I've have seen only one watiress there and right away I got the feeling she wasn't the talking conversational type. Well after we left I decided to come back again for the all you can eat. I finally found someone who was willing to go on a Friday evening. This is where the details gets important. She said she was very hungry and had to leave soon for reviewing her work later on so Sushi-Ya sounded perfect. We arrived around 5:30 and the place was not packed. Right away we sat at the bar and started ordering. Here is the following game plan I should have followed: 1. Arrive early. When we got there, there was room for parking and seating. When we left, the place was packed and people were waiting outside to get in. I did not see a parking space at all on the street. 2. This is not a place to talk. My friend was conversing like normal people do, but that takes time out of eating and they are strict about the one hour limit. Go there to eat, say some words, but not whole sentences and order and eat. It's rude, it's the gameplan. 3. Be hungry. They do serve generous portions here and my friend got full after 3 rolls. She can usually take more, but they don't skimp here and the nigiri sushi are what I consider proper size, at other places they are so small, here, they are just right. 4. Order a variety. I ordere the Bacardi and after that presentation I ordered all the new kinds of rolls. The chefs are dynamic in making them. 5. Move down the line. I remember a couple times when we were asked by the waitress to move one seat over so that other's can fit in. the place starting pick up pace right away. 6. Get the sushi. I think this is the place for sushi and nothing else. I would only come here for the all you can sushi. Save the other Japanese places for other food, here, sushi is the thing. I only gave this place 4 stars because I was not aware of the proper planning to eat at this place. I will go next time and I'm pretty sure the experience will be better. Go there, sit at the bar, move down so there's no empty space, and order sushi. Don't lollygag with conversation, do that after. Make sure the people you go with are gastronomes and the experience will be better. There have been comments on here about the service from the waitress and that usually deters me from coming back to other places, but even with the service, I want to come back here. The only thing I would expect from the service would be to bring my water, take away the empy trays, and bring the check. Don't expect anything beyond that and you can enjoy it here.

The sushi was just okay but to top it off, the service was horrible! I love ayce sushi places so when I saw this on Yelp I was so excited to try it. I went there with my husband, 2 year old daughter and 6 month old son. At first, I thought I was bracing myself for a really mean waitress based on some of the ratings I read about this place (little did I know they were talking about the boss) but the waitress had a smile on her face and seemed pleasant until we ordered (keep reading). When we sat down to order off the sheet of paper she provided us, we saw you only get to order 2 times! What?? I thought this was an all-you-can-eat place (I think within 1 hour but still ayce means ayce however many times you want within the allotted time)! So anyway, I filled in our first order, ordered one appetizer for my 2 year old daughter and then handed the waitress the paper and she said "No, you can't finish this, this is too much!" I said "We can eat and we're hungry." It wasn't even that much that we ordered. Then she said "No, you can't, this is a lot and said I'll take off one roll." I was upset but starving so I said "Fine, whatever." I just wanted to eat already. The food took forever to come out...hello, hurry up... I only have 1 hour before the Nazi waitress here kicks us out. When the food finally came it looked quite good but unfortunately, we were let down. The Jasmine handroll was delicious but the rest of the stuff was quite average. I like Midori in Studio City way more...too bad it's so far away! Anyway, after we ordered our second order and got the check, she had the balls to charge me extra for the one appetizer for my daughter! I asked her about it and she said she would talk to her boss about it. Out comes this tiny little 4'0 munchkin that practically yelled at me for questioning the charge! She said "Yes, charge! Yes, charge!" Then turned to another customer to seat them. How lame! Most places don't charge for a 2 year old. I mean how much can a 2 year old eat?? That's just bad business. Well, their sushi really wasn't great and the service sucked so I'm never going back!

Best sushi in Pasadena for the price. Definitely more of a hole-in-the-wall atmosphere than a refined dining experience, but it's a gem to find. The sushi is fresh and their rolls are great. All-you-can-eat is the best way to go here.

Been coming here for over 11 years and it has always been a great neighborhood sushi joint. I always judge a sushi place on how fresh their salmon is and Sushiya is ALWAYS butter smooth. It's been a loooooong time since I've done AYCE sushi so can't comment on that experience. I think I stopped be cause my Ala carte bill was always similar so I never saw the need to get AYCE again. Consistently the best and affordable sushi joint in all of Pasadena. I've tried nearly all the sushi joints in the area and I always come back here.

I am writing this review as a disgruntled costumer. Gave it two stars, because the sushi was pretty decent, and because the owner is super friendly, but I was so off-put by the way I was treated today, that I probably will scratch this place off my list of sushi places ever to return to, and that is probably a win for them. Again, the sushi was very good, but when we entered, they gave us a giant menu, which we asked if the menu we were given was the all-you-can-eat one, which they advertise in great big banners outside. It wasn't. Our menus were exchanged with significantly smaller ones. Still not all that aggravated, we ordered and got some awesome sushi. Was probably more rice than most places, but the rolls were amazing, the white tuna and albacore were fantastic and we were eating to our hearts content, when suddenly we went to order more and we were informed that we were only allowed to put in two orders. I asked how that would constitute being all you can eat if I could only order twice. We were then told that it didn't make any difference because we were over our hour time limit, and the all you can eat menu clearly states you must eat within an hour time limit. I looked at my phone, and saw that my friend had called me, to come pick me up and drive me to this place to eat some 50 minutes earlier, which meant we couldn't have been there more than 40-45 minutes (save the five or ten minute drive, park and walk in time.) I was aggravated because I was still very hungry, and wanted more, but they refused to give me "All I Can Eat" even after I ordered it. I tried to argue that we hadn't been there an hour, but it was of no use, they reserved the right to refuse service to anyone, including people who like to eat a lot at all you can eat places. Furious. After going to an all you can eat place, I wanna leave full. Instead, I went home and ate.

This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall, and one of my regular spots for sushi. There are only 3 tables here, with the rest of the seating at the bar. You can do AYCE or order off the menu. I usually go AYCE and sit at the bar so I can tell the chef what I want, just relax and eat, and not having to worry about the bill. There is a time limit of an hour though. While I can't speak for the waiting staff, the sushi chefs are always very nice. Customer service could be better. The fish to rice ratio isn't great, but that's alright. I'm always stuffed after said and done. You gotta try the Jasmine Hand Roll. They mix in some tempura to add a crunch. It's very rich, so a couple of these will definitely fill you up. Very unique. I wish they do 1/2 orders on rolls though... It's just too much food for 2 people to try a wider variety of rolls. The parking lot is really small, and it's shared with 4 other businesses.

My mom just went there last Sunday night with my aunt to celebrate her birthday early and got sick right afterward. The next day she got chills, fever went as high as 103.7, vomited, we admitted her to ER yesterday and confirmed that she has bacteria in her blood - severely food poisoned. Today is her actual birthday and she is celebrating in the hospital bed.

Came here one night because I was in the area and was craving all you can eat sushi. Searched on Yelp and this was the closest one. They weren't kidding when they said this was a hole in the wall. The restaurant itself is pretty small but nicely the decorated. The sushi was pretty fresh and delicious. No complaints here. I've been to many I all you can eat sushi places, but if you want a surprise try the Bacardi roll. They pour Bacardi around your sushi roll and light it on fire. It's nothing crazy but sit back and enjoy the show. Over in all I would come back again if I was in the area.

What caught my attention was the AYCE! Usually AYCE places have terrible quality and just look to serve the cheapest quality since they'd probably take a loss, but this place I can say is descent. It was good enough to be around the area and to stop for an AYCE fix. Love the eel and the rolls were good. I think the downfall was that it's super small. And the setup is just weird with where the beer tap was and the servers were a little "off". Nonetheless didn't take away from the good service the sushi chef gave to us from the bar. If anything, they should expand and still keep the quality of sushi they serve and keep the man making it too!

Delicious! First time here and since I'm pregnant, I'm not supposed to have raw fish so the sushi chef made me a few special veggie and cooked fish rolls! My husband got to enjoy the "real" sushi, which I hope to go back for after the baby. I also thought it was so sweet to see a family working together: grandmother, son, grandson and granddaughter. Try the crazy roll if you get a chance!

So I'm a frequent customer at Sushiya but after the horrible experience I had yesterday it's sure to say I will never be going back again. So I've been going to Sushiya for about 9 months frequently just placing my order by phone and picking it up afterwards, but in all that time I probably only dined in 3 times making it hard to get a good read on the place until yesterday. I decided to invite my uncle, aunt and little cousin to join my husband and myself for dinner which was the first time anyone even knew about the place except for myself. I raved about this place because it was my go to place for lunch and the staff already new me by name so I figured it would be a good night. My uncle and I decide to do the AYCE so as soon as we get there we all look over the menu and place our orders which actually required a lot of repetition and the waiter left with out even taking my husbands order. Then we waited for 20 mins with out any service and never even got our AYCE sheet back to place our second orders. We got little to no service and we literally had to get up to get service, I had asked for a coke half way through dinner which never came and I actually had to ask for again but this time to go because we where leaving! We also wanted to place one more order on our AYCE and they said no because we already put in our second order on the sheet, which was weird because I though all you can eat was actually all you can eat? She then said that it was because we passed our time limit when we didn't even get out sheet back till 20 minutes after we had finished the first round because like I said no service! But not having satisfied our hunger wasn't the worst part of the night, that would probably have to be when the waiter came to our table approached me and said "where you not happy with our service cause you didn't leave a tip"!!!!!! First of all I didn't pay my aunt did and it was her credit and not my place to write a tip, secondly when we where at the register both fighting to pay the bill we decided to go back to the table and leave the tip in cash! My aunt was shocked by the waiters question and pointed out that one did she really have to come and ask about a tip, did it bother her that much and second did she know that a tip isn't mandatory! Well the waiter left angry and then my aunt determined that the tip should be 16 for 130 dollar meal which is a 12% tip that I feel wasn't even deserved after all the disappointment, but I'm a hair dresser so I know the feeling or not getting a tip for hard work making me a very generous tipper so me and my husband gave a 20 dollar tip to the waiter. So the day I had looked forward to for a week ended up being a night I soon hope to forget! Never going back again! And incase anyone reading this is wondering about the food I personally think it's good and would probably give it 3 stars.

If you're looking for bad service and a regimented dining experience with low quality sushi, here's the place! Sushiya's AYCE sushi goes for $23.99. The menu is limited, drinks and dessert not included. There is a time limit of one hour, which would otherwise be sufficient, except that your hour starts from the time you are seated, if not from the time you walk through the door. My family and I made the mistake of chatting, catching up, and enjoying one another's company as we leisurely looked over the menu. You can't order additional items until everything from the first round is finished, so you're screwed if everyone in your party eats at a different pace. The service was slow even though they weren't busy--likely an additional attempt to cheat you out of that hour. Sushiya has the standard rule of consuming everything you order or you will be charged extra. Fine. However, the militant waiter reminded us of this at every turn as though we didn't get it the first time. It was annoying, but after the third time it was simply disruptive and rude. Sushi quality was way below average. Most of the rolls were oversauced, making everything mushy and taste basically the same. A rating of one star is generous.

Two words: JASMINE ROLL. No joke. The yelp reviews pointed to the Jasmine Roll, so the bf and I decided to order it, hand cut, and it was so yummily delicious. The soy paper gives it that melt-in-your-mouth amazingness, and the fish selection was so fresh. The best part: the crispy tempura flakes that are somehow mixed in, which gives this roll the most wonderful subtle crunch. YUM. We also ordered the sweet shrimp (hells yeah fried shrimp heads), a roll with yellowtail and spicy tuna, and a roll with salmon and california roll. So all of our rolls were fresh selections, and the freshness of the fish was quality. The sweet shrimp was pretty darn good - both the heads and the raw body. We may have found our new local go-to sushi spot!

Sushiya on Colorado blvd is a small run of the mill sushi joint. The fish was okay. The presentation was nice. The nigiri and miso were adequate, but buyer Beware if you order the jasmine hand roll. It reminded me of Donald trump. Obnoxiously rich and it made me a little sick. Also, avoid any rolls with spicy tuna. Overall take: Way too expensive for what you get.

This restaurant is a recent discovery for me, and I feel happy to have walked into this place. Their location in a strip mall makes it easy to miss, but I'll be back for more. In the last two visits, I ordered the all-you-can-eat special. I'm waiting for them to open up today, so I can get the same thing. The selection is pretty diverse, and I like that they offer cooked items as well as sushi. The tempura was especially good. The sushi was decent, better than I've experienced at other AYCE spots. The tuna & yellowtail were standouts on this particular day. There is also a day-long special on hot sake, very reasonable. In comparison with some of the sushi I've tasted in Little Tokyo, this spot isn't quite on the same level as far as the gourmet aspect, but I give it 5 stars for quantity and consistency. Also have to mention the waitress, an older lady from Japan who is especially nice. I asked if they had natto & nijiki, and she lit up with enthusiasm. They don't have those traditional Japanese dishes, which helps me understand the "Californianess" of this spot. They'll get some more of my money today.

Don't go to this place!!! Food was HORRIBLE and sushi was rotten. I ordered Sea Urchin and it was rotten and when I informed the owner / sushiman, he didn't even apologize & try to smell or taste the rotten food!!!! He just told us that our sushi is fine and we don't know about sea urchin..... We've been to numerous sushi places for past 15yrs and know the difference excellent, good & rotten sushi!!! Also, ayce policy... Beside from sea urchin (seperate order from ayce, since it's not included in ayce) in which we didn't finish... we wanted to order some more food (2nd round) for our kids. But, they would not allow us to order more food UNLESS every last piece of appetizer was completed. We were furious and just wanted to leave & when we say "just give us the check" they were gonna charge the left over food. Food was horrible & the service was even worst!!! Don't be fool by the pictures on the yelp. It's not worth your time & money!!!

I haven't been here in years but today I took my too oldest boys. I got the all you can eat sushi. I ordered a salmon crunch roll and spicy tuna roll. The salmon crunch roll came covered in fake crab and the roll had fake crab as well. Some of the pieces didn't have salmon at all. Crab was not listed on the menu for this roll. The spicy tuna roll came topped in avocado and a mayo sauce. Again these two ingredients were not listed on the menu. It's pretty obvious that they are adding crap to the rolls to better profit on the all you can eat. They are pretty Natzi about eating all you order including the rice and adding cheap filler to the rolls just feels like bad business. One of my sons got the sesame chicken and it was tasty. The miso was watered down a bit though.

At one time, this was our go-to spot for sushi. Normally we'd come here for Friday dinner or sometime on Saturday. But then with the change in business hours, we started to come here seldomly. After the change, when we did go we noticed that the portions weren't consistent and the construction of the rolls were poor. We were frequent diners here until late 2008. Fast forward to this past Sunday evening. There was a new sushi guy, working the short end of the bar. The Hubbs and I were quite impressed with him. Good-sized portions and rolls that don't fall apart make for a pleasant meal. It was promising. We may return more often. Had to knock it down to 3 stars because of the our experiences here the last 4 years and our frequency of eating here. However, if we start coming more often and the food becomes consistently good as our last visit here, I'll definitely give it fan status again. I'm really hoping I will...and in the near future too.

Love this place, huge value for what you get. I can't get enough of the Jasmine hand roll and spicy caterpillar. Rumor has it you can get all you can eat sushi for $24 and $27 for dinner. Also, be sure to give the sushi burrito a shot it's great and the spicy red sauce is tasty. Keep in mind, this place is located in a foothill strip mall that's a little run down, go for the food not the ambiance. On the inside sushiya gets passing marks and is happy to expedite your lunch if you're in a rush.

I called here half an hour before I arrived, and they said they were open. When I get there, though, the hostess tells me they are closed. The sushi chef LEFT randomly in the middle of the day. What kind of business is this? I will not be going here again, because I like consistency.

So it's been months since I've written a review, but I decided to knock a few out after some convincing from my Yelp buddy Laura S. One my last visit to SoCal Laura and I had lunch at SUSHIYA. The food was decent and affordable. We both got a 2 item lunch combo. Laura got Salmon teriyaki and a spicy tuna roll, while I ordered beef teriyaki and a spicy tuna roll. Each combo came with rice, salad, and soup. While the food wasn't amazing, it was definitely good for the price. We got out for under $25 total.

This place used to be one of my favorite local sushi joints. however since they started closing Friday nights and Saturday nights this place has gone down hill along with their service and sushi quality. I used to drop by atleast twice a week and have sushi here. Jason the owner and chief of this place used to be more friendly and talkative, now he is just rude. We found a parasite aka dead worm in the sushi. we notified the owner Jason and he just took the worm out and gave us the same piece of fish again. Unbelievable who the hell does this guy think he is ??? Pros: None Anymore Cons : 1. The owner watches you eat and gets mad when you order a lot of food. Why advertise as AYCE Then ?? 2. The place is rundown and has dust all over the ceiling 3. The rice was cold and hard 4. The place smells like Clorox and heavy chemicals 5. Sushi is rancid and tastes sour. Disgusting !!!!! 6. Fired his best chief Paul and now takes 20 minutes to get 1 roll 7. Found a parasite aka dead worm in my food WTF !!! 8. Was sick for 2 days after eating their food. If i could rate this trash location and its owner a 0 star rating i would. This place used to be a decent place before but the owners cheap and rude attitude has drove customers away. He got rid of his best chief Paul and he now takes forever to make you rolls that fall apart and have rancid sushi on top of them. Worst of all this mayo and crab he uses is sour and he masks it by adding more sauce on top of the rolls. its obvious they are rancid but he would rather make a $1 and serve you food that has gone bad than serve you fresh food like a sushi joint should. DON'T WALK BUT RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !!!!

The only sushi spot I go! Jason makes the best dishes, I've turned so many friends onto this little joint. I highly recommend trying the Jasmine Hand Wrap and Bacardi Roll for first timers, going in without trying them would be a waste! The place is small and cozy and most importantly is one of the only all-you-can-eat restaurants in Pasadena. I like to go as often as I can.

Great little hole-in-the-wall sushi joint for good and cheap sushi. It's a pretty small place, so there is a chance you might not be able to be seated right away. There is about 3 tables in there, and the rest is all counter seating. Oh, and parking is a hassle. This place shares a small parking lot with about 5 other businesses. I'd say there are probably only about 12 spots available? Luckily, I haven't had any issues with parking yet. Service is okay. Sushi is okay. My favorite roll is the Golden Philly. (deep-fried Philadelphia roll) Me and one of my BFF's always get it whenever we come. I've also done AYCE here with my Dad. I don't think it was too expensive. Maybe like $20? I'm not too sure. But they have a good selection of appetizers and rolls that you can choose from.

I started coming here when they still offered their AYCE for about $25 (+/-$3, it's been a while), and I immediately fell in love with this place. They offer so much fish in their hand rolls, and they also have a number of signature rolls that are very tasty! My favorite is the SushiYa roll, which consists of tuna, salmon, avocado, and a few other things, all wrapped in soy paper. They also have the SushiYa burrito, which is similar to the SushiYa roll, but larger and only cut into halves. Now, even though they don't have that deal anymore, I still like to go for their handrolls. Their service is very fast, and they always pay very close attention to detail. I like to get their shrimp tempura with the dip, but their baked muscles are also pretty tasty (although always served very hot, so be careful about getting burned!). They are closed on Saturdays, which is very disappointing, but I love this place so much that it gets 5 stars anyway!

I didn't see what everybody else is talking about. Sushiya is located in a small plaza that's far away from everything (except Goodwill, of course). I tried the AYCE, but their rolls just aren't good. Sushi rice is really mushy, seemed old and the flavors were bizarre as well. I'd never heard of more than half these rolls. I was charged for the last two, so it was like I had a group eat with me or something just for sushi. Also, if I had known sashimi isn't included in the AYCE, I wouldn't have stopped by to begin with.

The main reason I come here is for the Jasmine Hand Rolls. They are the best! The All You Can Eat Sushi price is typical, but you have to note the 1 hour time limit. The parking lot is quite small and so is the restaurant itself. So I wouldn't recommend coming here with a large group (unless you want to take up the entire place)

I've had better sushi elsewhere, but this place is just convenient and close to me... so if I don't feel like going too far for sushi, I end up here.. kind of scary looking from the location and the fact it was empty on my visits... was it the odd hour?? hmmmm..

WORST SERVICE EVER! My boyfriend and i came here last night and had the worst service ever let me start with the waitress they need to fire her so unorganized and felt lazy and very forgetful, i could tell alot of the customer were very irritated. So then our food came out and all of our rolls was just falling apart we had to pick them up with our hands to eat them. I use to come to this place before and it wasnt bad but service and food just went downhill. Your better off spending your money at ichima.

This place is so close to home, I can't believe I've never been here. My friend told me about their all you can eat so we gave it a try. A group of us went on a Sunday afternoon and it was $25.95/person. It wasn't busy but the place is pretty small and consists of a sushi bar and a few tables. For our first round, we ordered tons of sushi: salmon, tuna, squid, octopus, yellow tail, red snapper, fire cracker roll, spicy caterpillar roll, philly roll, lobster roll, sushiya roll, bacardi roll, spider roll and jasmine hand rolls. All of it was delicious! My favorites were the fire cracker and spicy caterpillar but they were all wonderful. If you can eat a lot of sushi, you must try this place! It's pretty good for that price. But don't order too much since you have to finish it all. After that first round, we were done! The jasmine hand roll was what sent me over the edge. It's rich and huge so you probably won't be able to eat much after that. :) The service was good and they wrapped the sushi fast too. The only con is parking. It's a small lot so you may have to find street parking.

If this is grade school, this place would get a B-. I think that 23.95 is reasonable for all you can eat lunch, and $1.99 is more than reasonable for a draft Blue Moon or Kirin. The gripe that I have with this place is that the menu isn't too multidimensional (less tempura-laden deep fried rolls, please!) and could stand to try new things out. Also, the young lady serving us looked quite depressed, which means that they might not treat their employees with the greatest of respect here. Not cool. Still, I was pleasantly surprised.

This is my go-to everyday sushi place in Pasadena. It's located in a random mini-mall on the corner of Foothill and Alta Dena and can be completely overlooked if you don't keep your eye out for it. It's pretty small, so it wouldn't be good for big groups, but I usually order take-out anyway. I love it when the small Japanese lady is there to take orders! The quality and taste of the sushi is very good - I've never been disappointed - and the prices are reasonable. Be warned: They are closed on Saturdays. Total bummer.

Small and almost cozy. The owner (I think) was there and served the four of us. He was very attentive and was always spot on when taking our orders, never having to ask us twice what we ordered. All orders were made quickly and correctly. It is pricey for the AYCE sushi but you can't really find good AYCE sushi in the 626. The sushi here is not bad at all, considering. It's location is a bit strange, I almost passed the plaza it's in. It's sandwiched between a donut shop and a massage parlor. I will be back whenever I'm craving a massive amount of sushi.

My favorite sushi place hands down. I enjoy the small and cozy atmosphere. The chefs are friendly and prepare a variety of great rolls. Give it a try!

This is my go to sushi spot! I am a regular and have been frequenting this place for about 6 years now. They have an All-You-Can Eat option and depending on the time u go will determine your price. Lunch AYCE option is about $25 bucks or so and the Dinner AYCE option is about $27 or so. Considering a roll ranges from $7-10 sometimes more, eating 2 of them and some nigri sushi and you'll definitely get your money's worth. My Favs: -Scallop sushi -Albacore sushi -Salmon sushi -Sushiya Roll -Lobster roll -Salmon skin hand roll -Jasmine hand roll (A MUST TRY) The owner Jason is awesome and my favorite server is Sunny.

Sushiya is a tiny sushi joint that is one of the few all you can eat sushi restaurants in this area. The fish is decent, nothing spectacular, and unless you're a fish connoisseur it's not going to let you down. The rolls are put together well and taste pretty good. I recommend any rolls that start with "baked", but beware that it may take longer, especially if it's busy. The letdown for me was the near $30 price (dinner) for their AYCE choice, which is one of the highest I've seen given their choices. A better alternative would be Hon Sushi just a few miles away if that's what you're in the mood for. Good place for a sushi lunch or dinner, but there are cheaper places for all you can eat.

If I could give a negative star, I would! AYCE sushi for $26 and you only get 1hr to eat from when you were seated!! The last 3 plates came and the lady told us we had 6 minutes to finish otherwise we would have to pay more. She was literally breathing down our necks for us to leave! The sushi comes with 5x more rice than I've ever had. The server also spilled all the dishes and food on our laps before we left. So, I felt really bad taking my family to eat here because we all had a miserable time all because of me. DO NOT EAT HERE!

This place is actually pretty good. The owner is friendly, the sushi is fresh, and the AYCE is awesome! Sure, there are fancier sushi joints, but don't judge a book by it's cover. The price is good, and the food is great. I started coming here about 3 weeks ago since I just moved to the area and am now a regular. The owner Jason is super friendly, (he comes off as shy, but once he starts talking to you he's a really cool guy). Every time I've gone in there, I'm greeted and seated right away and my order is made as soon as I'm done filling out the little sheet. The only drawback I see is that the rolls are pretty big, so it's hard to try a variety of them before getting full, but since when is everything in life supposed to be perfect? If you expect to come here and enjoy AYCE with good food and friendly service, your expectations will have been met (maybe even exceeded) so it deserves nothing less than five stars. I will continue to come back here on a weekly basis.

For more than six years has Sushi Ya been the sushi my wife and I has measured other sushi places against. During our many visit we have enjoyed here Sushi Ya has produced consistently great food. After having a $250+ sushi at an upscale sushi restaurant a couple of weeks ago (where we actually didn't east all the food because it simple didn't taste good) we we're happy to be back today to what my wife has declared best Vegetarian sushi. To me this is THE place, lunch or dinner. My favorites are - of course - the Jasmine hand roll, The Pasadena Special (Unagi, spicy tuna on top and Shrimp Tempura inside), Sushi Ya Roll (Shrimp Tempura, Tuna, Salmon, Crab and Avocado), Rainbow Roll (Assorted Fish and avocado on top of a California Roll), Spicy Crush Roll (Salmon, Crab and Crunch inside and on top). If you order the AYCE you definitely get a lot of food a fair price. And the people there are nice too. We miss the inari though.
