Lively, mariachis, a fireplace, bustling, huge portions (fish tacos, yum!), and huge margaritas. What's not to like?

Another restaurant picked from Yelp. Just average tasting food I have to say. We were seated outdoor since it was a nice day. Service was Ok. Chips and salsa weren't that good. I got the Yucatan Trio since this is supposed to be a Yucatan Mexican restaurant. The trio came with a Cochinita Pibil, a Yucatan style tamale, and grilled Poc Chuc, with a side of black bean soup and rice. This was for lunch, a very big lunch I say. The Cochinita Pibil and Poc Chuc was OK but Tamale wasn't. The bf had Enchilada and Chile Relleno, it wasn't anything to shout about either. A little dissapointed with the 4 stars reviews.

Went to El Portal night after movie night. The place is small and quaint and sits a half block from the Pasadena Playhouse. We ordered the Cochinita pibil and Poc-chuc and it was awesome! Cant say enough about the food. Whats a good Yucatan restaurant without some habanero peppers on top!! Definitely going back. Edgar and Tony the bartenders are a class act. The Mariachi showed up around 6:30, and that's when they got 4 stars instead of 5. The Mariachi was blah, why blah..? No horns. Not horns, no Mariachi!! But, the food was awesome. Free cheese at the bar on Fridays too! I recommend this to all Mexican food connoisseurs.

So lately I have been eating out a lot, too much actually and it is because of places like this that I am struggling to stop. Despite weak margaritas, mediocre chips and salsa, and a weak excuse for a mexican staple (beans) they won me over with the Yucatan trio. While never a fan of mexican tamales (due to having had the privilege of having Salvadoran tamales which just blow them out of the Spanish speaking world) the tamale served here was fantastic. It was created in a banana leaf and was so moist it was comparison worthy to those of El Salvador. Cochinita pibil is essentially carnitas, but they do it well I must say. Again, the rice and beans left something to be desired, but hey...mexican food is generic to begin with...HOWEVER, food of the Yucatan maintains some of its Mayan heritage which definitely contributes to the quality of this joint.

This was my first time at this place . I ordered the Yucatan trio. Pretty decent portion. It comes with cochinta pibil, poc chuc, and a chicken tamale with side of Spanish rice, black beans and some pickled red onions. The only thing that had flavor was the pickled onions. The cochinta pibil was dry,its pieces of pork kinda like carnitas marinated in a red sauce, but it was lacking more sauce. The poc chuc is a little pork chop with grilled onions and garlic,it tasted like a pork chop a basic pork chop and the chicken tamale was ehh alright, the chicken didn't have enough flavor just bland, the tamale came with a tomato sauce on top,as if they popped open a can of tomato sauce and poured it on top. The rice and beans were ok. I gave it 3 stars because the service was excellent. The waiters were great very, attentive. They serve mexican dishes too,if I ever go back maybe i'll one of those, my buddy had chimichangas, said they were good.

Some friends were dragging me out on a rainy day to see Broken Embraces at the Laemmle and decided to stop here for lunch and some drinks before. Our waiter quickly recognized my friends as being regulars and after chatting for a bit took our drink orders and suggested a certain tequila that I wish could remember the name of. I ended up splitting a Nopales dish that was so good and very filling. I don't like venturing to Old Town but next time I'm in the area I'll keep this place in mind.

We love the food here. Service is excellent, sit at the bar and Brenda, Tony and Edgar will cater to all your wishes. Been here several times and have never been disappointed.

El Portal is the best Mexican food restaurant I have been to! I have been here on several occasion's and I am pleased every time. The brick courtyard that surrounds you gives it a good feeling. My favorite plate, which is not on their menu, is the Camarones a La Veracruzana. Its a bit spicy but not overwhelming. But if you really cant handle the heat, let them know and they'll hold back on the chili. The staff is super friendly! One time, I took a cake since we were celebrating a friends birthday. I asked the host if they could hold the cake in the kitchen. When it was time to bring it out, they had it set on a beautiful dish, fully cut, and even placed birthday candles on it! Now that is going above and beyond their duties.

This place is nasty. I ordered the lemon chicken and seriously....El Pollo Loco beats their chicken. The vegetables that comes on side is like steamed frozen veggies. I'm so disappointed. I'll never eat at this place again. You're better off going to Taco Bell. I only came here after trying to go to El Metate and they were closed. Stupid me suggested this place because of the pretty decent Yelp reviews. You disappoint me on this one Yelpers! : (

The food is amazing!!! It is not your typical Mexican restaurant. They serve food native to the south of mexico which is more Carribean than anything else. The Cadillac Margarita is superb!!

Great friendly service. We were greeted warmly and given a nice booth. Waiter was always there but not intrusive. Food was a cut above the average Mexican restaurants and the quality was good. Overall good experience

My wife and Iove to eat here. The food is great and very consistent. The service is always good. My wife loves so many of the dishes served here, but I almost always get the carne asada, it is always so flavorful. My suggestion is to sit outside or in the main dining room, the back room off to the left from the door is just not the same experience and is usually very loud. You have to try their margaritas they are really great.

Had a lunch meeting and was new to the area so I hopped on Yelp! to see what I could find. Mexican is usually a safe bet because even when it's bad, it's still good... I was a bit concerned when I arrived because the only people in the building were the two people I was meeting with. I sat down ordered a drink and by the time it arrived (which was less than 60 sec) The crowds started to pour in... No lie, it was like a movie when the star walks in and then the extras fill the background to make the scene seem natural LOL not sayin' I'm a star (even though I should be) haha... So the food came out just as fast as the beer. Then again, I did order asada tacos (incredible) with beans an rice (both pre-cooked) so I guess it didn't need much prep time. I would definitely say that this place was a great choice, the staff was very friendly, service prompt and even though prices were a bit high it was worth the extra buck or two for the no hassle experience...

LOVE IT! Service has always been great and the food tasty. Best margaritas in town. Food is tasty and the service incredible. Its in walking distance for me so I love being able to enjoy a margarita and walk home. They have a live mariachi band, but can't recall the times they do this. For Cinco de Mayo they go all out with decorations and mariachis to entertain. I have been there for lunch, snack and go and dinner with my husband and coworkers. Its great to have a place that I can feel comfortable no matter who I'm with.

After shopping in Old Town we always check in at El Portal. It is the best Mexican restaurant around --- margaritas and food from Yucatan.

Enjoyed dinner and margaritas on the open patio Saturday evening. Good food, friends, and drinks. What more can you ask for? The entertainment stopped by our table and sang to us - it was so pretty! Classy couple. The Yucatan food was what we ordered, and we enjoyed the trio the most. The salsa is really good, too! Nice place for a relaxing evening. Service was friendly. Good times.

I've been coming to this restaurant for the last fifteen years, since I was a young kid. It's located across the street from Vroman's in Arcade Lane. The menu has totally evolved over the years, the prices have gone up, but so has the flavor and the customer service (and that's saying a lot because I've always had a positive experience). I love the panuchos, chicken tequila and the carne asada. I love the indoor/outdoor seating and the surrounding stores (wine bar, sushi restaurant, and VROMAN'S, need I say more?). And they always have unusual/gorgeous art work on the walls. Don't come here and get tacos or a burrito. They're on the menu and are good, but come on. Order one of the specials. Live a little. If you park in back, don't forget to get your parking validated!

The first time I ever came here, I asked my friend what her favorite dish was, and she replied.."The Panuchos..by far!" Panuchos? I looked at the description..."corn tortillas topped with a fried black bean paste, with shredded chicken, salsa, pickled red onion and avocado..." sounds like it might be good. Well, they're amazing! Second time to this place, and I ordered them again. Still amazing. Complete that with some albondigas soup, guacamole, chips y salsa, and some sips of your bf's margarita because you can't order your own on account of you having left your ID at home, and you have a wondrous meal. Oh, minus one star for some undercooked chicken in my bf's dish.

Ayayayay nothing better than good mexican (authentic) food. And El Portal has it! Makes me wanna sing with the mariachi trio... "Ay ay ay ay, canta y no llores!!!" There was excelent except for one thing: my undercooked chicken in the mole enchiladas. The waiter listened, asked what was wrong like 2 times and then took it to the kitchen to bring a new plate, this time with perfectly cooked chicken. My galan ordered the "panuchos," a name that makes me laugh every time I hear it (or write it) because of its similar sound to a naughty Mexican slang word (wont tell you what it is, I'll just say I don't have it). But the panuchos were definitely much more tastier than whatever comes to mind when hearing the word. Guaranteed. I liked them so much that I kept staring at my bf's plate like a cute puppy so he would stop swooning over them and share a bite ;-P The margarita was Ok, the chips salsa and guacamole were fabulosos! The tables were close to each other, and the waiters/staff are running around with little walkie talkies making sure everything is fine. Next time I'll get the panuchos.

Californication is really Miscenegation. How could we eat without it? When traveling, I tell natives I'm a Californian, not an American. We get the best food and people. It's how I grew up. Once I lived 3 hours north of Mexico City and became fluent in Spanish when ordering food. In those days I went by Santiago & let the locals believe I was a narco-trafico. It was there, in Guanojuato, I formed my plan to become rich via loteria and take a mariachi trio with me everywhere- Pepe Bismo, Juan Capastrono, and Little Cesar. Hombres de negocios will shake my hand and ask me how my family is doing. I'll say pretty good and then Pepe will begin to sing... But the lucky buck is hard to catch so until I win big I go to El Portal where dueno / proprietor Abel Ramirez and his mariachi trio make me feel like a third-world superstar. Soak up their courtyard spread twice a year for tequila tasting; the tequila aged in cognac barrels. French and Mexican? Miscenegation mis amigos. (Note to El Cholo: If I'm going to drink with children, I'll go to a frat party. Cuervo Gold is 49% vodka with carmel color added. Double yuck.) Mexicans call Mexicans who want to be white *coconuts* - brown outside, white in the center. But what do you call a whitey who could eat Mexican everyday? A Californian. Miscenegation, how could we eat without it friends?

It's the funnest (grammer?) Mexican restaurant in town. Just pure fun. And the food is good and they have more than your usual Mexican food. There's some local stuff from a region that I forgot what it's called. Good drinks and good service. I like going there on a regular basis. It get very busy on the weekends.

I met Mari here for a light dinner and tequila "tasting" this past Sunday night. The night started off promising in that the bartender Brenda was attentive and served us with a smile. We started off with Herradura Añejo and a Carta Blanca for me. I hadn't had a shot of Herradura in a while and it went down smoothly. Brenda's counterpart shows up and gives Mari another drink and some other items she requested. So far so good. Mari and I were discussing her recent travels to Europe and how the travel bug hit her hard. As Mr. Bartender chimed in on his trip that cost him $3500 10 years ago and worked his way down from Finland, but met his girlfriend in Germany (??), we continued talking about travels in Latin America and guess what? He stayed at a place for a month with some other tourists in Guatemala (btw, he started in Tijuana and made his way down the country and ended in Costa Rica) for a dollar a day with a lake that was beautiful and made Hawaiian water pale. $1.00 per day on the lake front in a beautiful place, people!! As the night progressed, Mari's hubby showed up and we got to talking about how we met (Mari and I became friends through Yelp) and here comes Mr. Bartender, "OOH, you guys met through Match!!" Dude... We are all enjoying our drinks and the conversation switches to MMA. And guess what? He used to be a fighter for WEC wec.tv And his last professional fight was there, I said, oh cool, do you know so and so? "no, never heard of them" but he gave up fighting because of his knee and now he only trains fighters. So, what do you train? "kick boxing" Where? " such and such school" So you know so and so? "no" I always factor in a bit of BS from bartenders as their job is to get you to drink more, but come on, man... The food was decent, it wasn't as earth shattering as they made it out to be, but it was passable. I definitely would not pay more than what they were charging.

if you enjoy Americanized mexican food at a high price knock yourself out ....this is your place. Im from Yucantan so I had to try these dishes...Needless to say the Panuchos, Cochinita Pivil was disappointing. Black beans were good. I guess the rent must be pretty hight to charge these prices but hey power to them place was pretty packed on a wednesday night. tab came out to $42 for two ...with 2 beers. Now Im broke and disappointed.

I'm rounding up from 3.5 stars because I liked the cochinita pibil, and I don't really know of any other decent Mexican restaurants in Pasadena. I ordered the Yucatan trio, while my friend got the steak fajitas. My order was definitely better. The Yucatan trio includes the cochinita pibil (roasted pork marinated with lime juice and achiote spices), poc-chuc (grilled pork), and tamales with shredded chicken. I really like pibil, and I thought El Portal's could hold its own with the other pibil places in LA. I can't say the same for the other dishes. I didn't care for the tamale, and the poc-chuc was just grilled pork, nothing particularly special or flavorful. El Portal is located on Green St apart from the rest of Old Town. It's more quiet here and there's a parking lot in front.

The food at El Portal was fairly tasty but for the price of their drinks I would expect a little more from a place like this. The entrance of El Portal is great, it puts you in a different place, doesn't even feel like you are in Pasadena anymore. The food and service are lacking though. Example the waitress said that the camarones diablo would be too hot for my fiances father. The explanation he got was there is a chile symbol next to that item therefore it was way too hot for him. Why? We asked the manager (who was awesome) for a taste of the sauce. He brought it back and it was more mild than the salsa they gave us with the chips! I dont understand the disconnect between the waiters and the great manager. We wont be going back, out of six of us that ate that night, no one is expecting to go back.

I went to this place early on 2012 I order the panuchos, and they serve them with chicken cubes, the original panuchos from Yucatan, Mexico are made with turkey marinate with red anatto and the meat is shred not in cubes very disaapointed and expensive place also. I will broke my wallet again just if they make the original panuchos.

We were turned on to this place by some friends. It's not "Mexican" food, but Yucatan food. Either way you slice it, it's pretty darn good. I recommend ordering off of the specials menu. The paella is excellent. The drinks are great and Brenda, one of the bartenders, really makes you feel comfortable. On Fridays and Saturdays, they have a fresh cheese platter at the bar for nibbling, along with the requisite chips and salsa. We spent New Year's Eve with El Portal and it was great. Although the kitchen closed at 11, everyone stayed around until midnight when the owner invited everyone to the courtyard for complementary champagne, tequila, and the requisite New Year's Countdown. We were quite a bunch and the people waiting for the parade joined in on the fun. Make a trip to El Portal. Support the local restaurants and you'll be happy you did.

My husband and I had a great spur of the moment date night at this indoor-outdoor restaurant. We devoured the chips and salsa, split a pitcher of margarita between us (the hubby got the lion's share and I got the car keys), and the chicken chimichanga rivaled El Cholo's, which says a lot in my world (see my El Cholo review). I couldn't stop eating the giant chicken chimichanga, so I wound up severely overeating, but this means good things for normal people (bad things for my willpower). It was THAT excellent. The tortilla was flaky yet substantial, the cheesy gushing yummyness inside was flavorful in that "hmm, what is it that makes this taste so dang good" query sort of way. After gorging ourselves, and getting tipsy, we had a pleasant walk around outside, and then I drove my adorably buzzed hubby home. We will return! You should check this place out.

I have read several of the reviews and I thought that I should put some of my personal experiences about this place. I have gone here several times and haven't had a bad experience. The place is clean and the service was always at minimal acceptable. Then again, I haven't been there when its busy so go figure. So far the Cochinita Pibil is the bomb. I think that is the best dish they serve. Ok, so their chips are multi-colored- kinda cheesy, but their margaritas are very good, salsas fresh, and I really don't have any complaints. They have a covered patio with heaters. They have a back parking lot in the back and they do validate so you don't have to pay for parking.

My boy and I had dinner here on Sunday. First, let me start off by saying there is a HUGE christmas tree near the entrance -- which is a good thing. Also, Sunday was quite cold, but as soon as we walked into this restaurant, the warm, inviting lighting and HEAT made me feel nice and toasty. Whew. Their margaritas are YUMMY and strong. The Ultima? Joy! The staff was really friendly and attentive. The Yucatan Trio was my favorite and my boy got the Enchiladas De Mole. Both (I thought) were great, although my boy said the Mole could have been fresher. He's had more mexican food than I have, so perhaps he's right (?). I think it also depends on when you come into the restaurant though. Isn't that with all places? The tamale was probably my least favorite out of the Yucatan Trio, a sampler of sorts of different dishes of the region. But I still enjoyed them all. But oh man, the Cochinita Pibil and Poc Chuc were quite lovely. Then again, I have nothing else to back my opinion of Yucatan food, as this was my only taste of it. Still, it's confirmed my belief that I should definitely travel there (sigh, some day). I'm not sure if these were American versions of the dishes, but they were delicious nonetheless. I'd definitely want to come back here! Plus, it's right near the Pasadena Playhouse and the Indie movie theater. ;)

I read a couple of reviews before I came here for the first time the other night. I started off with their Tortilla soup to start with. It was good, I'd definitely recommend it. Margarita was good, like a 3/5 good. Their salsa they start you off with was also SUPER delicious. It was so fresh and tasted the way homemade Mexican salsa should taste. If you're into a little spice (or a lot, rather) then ask for their HOT salsa. It was great to have with the fresh tortilla chips and also all over my food. I ended up trying the Yucatan Trio because it contains 2 out of the 3 Specialties. The Trio consists of Cochinita Pibil (HIGHLY recommended on yelp) but I was quite disappointed in this when I tried it. It was just OKAY. Very, very typical to me. I can bet that some taco trucks down the street will have better shredded pork than that. Also included in the Trio is the Chicken Tamale. It was pretty good, the outside corn layer of the tamale was thinly made. Different from what I'm used to. I was content with it, but again, nothing special at all there. I ordered the Trio so I can try those two specialties. Both disappointed me in some sense, but to my amazement, the last item on the Trio unexpectedly blew my mind. The GRILLED POC-CHUC (grilled pork chop) was UNBELIEVABLE. Flavorful and super juicy. This is how a grilled pork chop is supposed to be done! I guess in the end, their specialties disappointed me, but I was impressed by the side items that I named.

This place is amazing and never disappoints. Ive never eaten anything here and not thought about it later on or even the next day. And the staff is very friendly, they treat their regulars with respect and courtesy. That means something to me and DAMMIT that should mean something to you as well. Ive brought grips of friends here and theyve all loved it.

Sometimes I wonder if I went to the same restaurant as other Yelp reviewers... I went for dinner with my family and nobody was impressed with their meal. The meat tasted like meat, the beans like beans, lots of cheese ... it all tasted like generic american style fast food mexican. A step up from Taco Bell, but not a very big step. Service was not very good and was quite slow. They immediately brought fresh chips and salsa, which were both good. The salsa brought new meaning to the word mild -- no jalapenos at all. Appetizers took about 30 min to come out. We had an assorted platter with taquitos, nachos, quesadillas and shrimp. Only the shrimp was hot. And only the shrimp were tasty. The taquitos were awful -- tough and dry. The nachos were pretty good, but had minimal toppings. The quesadillas were just warm cheese sandwiched in soggy tortillas. After eating the appetizers our utensils were dirty. When the waiter cleared away the appetizer plates he put the used utensils directly back on the table! Disgusting. I had a combo platter with beef enchilada, chicken tamal and chile relleno, which came with a side of rice and beans. It was a big plate of mush covered in sauce and cheese. All three items tasted essentially the same and the texture of each item was identical. You could only distinguish by visual inspection (the chile was green, etc ...) My dad had the squash special which he said was "pretty good." My mom had the beef fajitas. The beef was quite tough (overcooked or possibly microwaved?). They forgot to include sour cream on her plate and she had to request it. When they brought it over minutes later it had other food in it (small pieces of something -- guacamole or salsa maybe?). I hope it wasn't recycled from someone else's plate -- I'm assuming some salsa or something fell into the sour cream container. Nonetheless, the food chunks were visible in the sour cream when it was brought to the table. The waiter deliberately brought it to us knowing that there was food in it and hoped we would not notice. Unacceptable. I would not come back here.

First time for lunch today. My friend had the mole enchilada and was making yummy noises the whole time. I played it safe and had fish tacos and they were good, but fell apart when I bit into them. Friendly greeter, friendly and quick service. I will go back.

Nice El Portal, you treat people right. Customer Service is excellent and the food is always consistent. My comrades and I eat here a lot. Ask for the hotter chipotle sauce when they serve you chips. You can't go wrong. If I were you, go with a special. You can't beat the taste. p.s. they have your favorite tequilas...

I really enjoyed my late night dinner with my friend Cristina here last week. We met up the night before Thanksgiving. The entire staff was very friendly and attentive, yet not smothering. The chips and salsa were yummy and they kept them coming. I had my standard crispy chicken taco and cheese enchilada, delish! The rice was good too, which I am usually pretty picky about. But my favorite thing was my strawberry margarita... very tasty! If you are looking for some good mexican food, at a relatively reasonable price and great service, I would recommend El Portal!

I took my boyfriend here for lunch on his birthday. I had the mole enchiladas and a horchata, and he had the chilaquiles (sp?). the mole enchiladas were pretty good. it tasted like it was made fresh and the mole sauce was good. i wasn't the biggest fan of the green peppers in the enchiladas, it just seemed out of place in my opinion and didn't really add and additional kick or flavor. the mole sauce could have been a tad thicker, at least that is what i like. the horchata, tasted like a normal horchata that you could probably buy at the market. as for the chilaquiles, it tasted pretty good from the one scoop i had of it, he didn't complain so i guess it was OK.

This place is crap!! The food is horrible and goes right along with the owner's crappy food and business model. We waited for a seat at the bar only to find out the owner was saving the seats for his white friends. No reservation signs were put up...I guess they prefer to cater to a particular type of clientele; probably because they are the only ones who think this bland non authentic food is actually tasty. I have had a better meal at Taco Bell. Save your money and go to the taco truck over on Fair Oaks and California!!! HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! Note I was forced to pick a star, it should be no stars!

I liked this place. Came here for an appetizer and a drink in the afternoon with my mom and sat outside in the courtyard. Very pleasant; appetizer was decent/good and the margarita, really good! Chips and salsa, average. My mom liked her flan. It seems like it would get crowded at peak times. I don't feel a tractor beam pulling me back here, but if I am in the area and want decent Mexican, or a margarita, I'd come back. I think the drinks on the patio aspect was what I liked the most about this place.

This place was packed when our party of 8 arrived. The only available seats were the outdoor ones, but our group was starving so we gladly took them. The first thing that you will notice in this place is its friendly service. Our waiter kindly explains every single items we ordered. I ordered the Yucatan tamales, but unfortunately they were sold out so I settled for the mexican tamales which was pretty good. My husband ordered their beef burrito and devoured his meal in less than 5 minutes. Everyone in our group seemed content with their orders. A friend of mine across the table ordered the Yucatan Trio which seems to be the star of the table. It looked and smelled delicious. Next time I would probably try to get an indoor seating since it seems so cozy and pretty. Plus they have live music. What an awesome ambiance. Our waiter recommended us to try their breakfast. Will probably try it next time I came for a leisure stroll to Pasadena.

I had spotted this place a while back but never had a chance to visit until now. The idea of Yucatan cuisine caught my interest. At best, I can only say this place was ok. The best thing about this restaurant is the ambiance. It's very disappointing when nice ambiance is unmatched by run of the mill food. The margaritas were disappointing as well. Not sure if I just happen to have a higher tolerance for alcohol, but a standard margarita should at least give you a slight buzz. The ones at El Portal did nothing. They were pretty water-down and had a funny aftertaste. waitress was friendly but she forgot our tortillas. The tortillas were your standard processed grocery store tortillas and they tasted like they had been in the fridge for too long. We got plenty of tortilla chips but our salsa was never refilled. Generosity is great but it has to go together with consistency. If you bring us more chips please provide us with more salsa. While the staff is pretty attentive, I felt it was overstaffed making the place feel a bit overcrowded. There's an obvious hierarchy going on here that I felt interfered with the overall dining experience. When deciding how much to tip I was unsure about who exactly I was tipping as we had at least 3 different people come to our table. I'd love to come back to this place because of it's very charming atmosphere. it's really lovely and I can imagine this being a fun place to be, especially on a warm night. However, there's gotta be a reason, whether it's good drinks or good food, and sadly there's nothing on the menu that's calling telling me to come back. Maybe I'll just come back for a round of shots when I happen to be stumbling by the neighborhood.

This is one of my dads favorite Mexican restaurants so I always end up going. Since I go sooo often I am tired of it but I must say everytime I go the food is tasty and the service is great. I like the atmosphere of this Restaurant, its fancier than most Mexican joints and thats what makes it a little more pricey. The have cute outdoor seating and indoors the decor is festive and on weekends they normally have singers walking around the tables playing a song for you. This place is relaxing and comfortable. The food is always good, would recommend almost everything on their menu. Tacos are greasy but good, yummy enchiladas, and tasty soups! Just wouldn't recommend the shrimp salad, it didn't taste mucho fresh.

This restaurant is kind of hidden, but it's a nice little place for Mexican food. I really liked the conchinita pibil. It was very tender and flavorful. It tasted great in the tortilla with beans and rice. I really didn't have any complaints about this place. I will most certainly be back in the future.

Had a business lunch here. Very good food; ordered the Enchiladas, the rice and beans were excellent. Wish I lived closer to El Portal.

My hubby wanted to meet my son and I for lunch on his birthday. Who am I to argue with a free meal? I've been to El Portal twice now and I'd have to say I am a fan because the food is always delicious and the service is perfect. I made a reservation for lunch for six people and we had a nice table. When one extra person showed up it was easy to add one more chair. Food: 5/5 Stars I ordered #16 which was two carnitas, rice and beans. The pork was very tender, the corn tortillas were fresh and I liked their rice and beans too. The plate was $11.00 which is reasonable for a sit down restaurant. I didn't order a margarita because I was driving, but I had a sip of my nephew's Cadillac margarita. It was really good. Service: 5/5 Stars Mario was our server and he was great. He pointed out some lunch specials, brought our drinks quickly and anything else we needed. My nephew ordered the chorizo and salmon lunch special and it came out at least five minutes after the rest of the table, so he had to wait while the rest of us started. I can't blame our server for that. Atmosphere: 4/5 Stars I love the hacienda feel of the restaurant and I apologize for not taking photos, but I was with a bunch of business people and I didn't want to look like the crazy, photo taking Yelper that I am. The restaurant is very nice inside with traditional décor and comfortable seating. They have tables on the patio as well. I like the fact that all the tables are not too close to each other, so you can have a little privacy if you need it. Parking: 4/5 Stars You can park in the lot in back for one hour for free. Just get the host to validate your ticket for the attendant. I'm not sure what they charge if you go over an hour. Recommendation: I would definitely go back as the food and service were excellent.

I don't know why the rating isn't higher for this place. Went with a couple of friends last night and we all loved our meals. I have to say that my shrimp tostada was by far the best I've ever had! The shrimp were large, juicy, spicy, and there were quite a few of them. The pico-papaya salsa was amazing, and the black beans totally outstanding. When was the last time you were surprised by....beans? Everything was soooo flavorful! Service was great, atmosphere is congenial and colorful.

I cannot write enough great things about El Portal. I have been here twice now and have fallen in love. The Yucatan cuisine is amazing! Margaritas: amazing! The atmosphere is an escape on the outside and a cozy retreat on the inside. Complete with romantic party lights, dangling over the alleyway tables and a big fireplace inside for cold nights. If you don't know El Portal, shame on you! On my most recent visit I was surprised to discover that the Veracruz marching band (in town for the Rose Parade) was having dinner, courtesy of the owner. In exchange, El Portal received a private concert, complete with Flamenco dancers (see video). It was incredible! What a treat! Apparently El Portal occasionally does random acts of greatness like this for their customers....and in my opinion, it's very much appreciated. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could! Update - I originally forgot to mention how great the service is here. I can't think of any restaurant that has more attentive service. The staff will treat you like royalty. If you drop a fork, there will be another next to your plate before the one fallen has hit the ground. These people are impressive! All in all, El Portal deserves a far better rating that three and a half stars!

I really like this restaurant, The cozy ambiance and feel was very inviting. It's nestled in a back alley type setting amongst shops and offices off Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena on Green St. Enjoyed the food, my group had the Chimichangas (beef & chicken) Chile Relleno & Burrito Verde. Sampled most and all were very tasty. Enjoyed my shredded beef chimichanga served with rice & beans. Chips and salsa kept coming and were good! The Cadillac Margaritas were delicious. Prices are reasonable and the service was friendly, attentive and accommodating. We sat next to the fire place so it was a perfect holiday feel for dinner. Outside and indoor seating is available. Will be back!

El Portal will be your go to Mexican restaurant in Pasadena if you enjoy pre-mixed Margaritas poured out of large plastic barrels on a busy night, inconsistent food prep and wait service, supervisory staff that sometimes don't respond well when problems arise on the fly, and bar staff that routinely block the TV sight lines at the most inopportune times if you're trying to watch a game. I highly suggest avoiding the wine at El Portal, as it is the bartenders' practice to violate California law by combining open bottles as a matter of convenience. While Pasadena is a great restaurant town, it is not a great Mexican restaurant town, with several marginal (El Cholo, Mijares) to downright awful (Ranchero, Margarita Jones) options. I would lump EP in the former, perhaps if only for their Yucatecan offerings. I found those plates to be the most flavorful during my expired patronage of EP.

First time I had Mexican food from the Yucatan. I had the delicious Yucatan Trio, a sampling of three dishes from Yucatan. My wife had the Maya salad which she loved. They offer traditional California Texas style Mexican food too. You can only see the restaurant From Green Street and not Colorado Blvd. it's a small but quaint restaurant. We will be back.

El Portal is tucked away inside of an arcade between Colorado and Green. I went there for lunch this week, not having been there since I worked in Pasadena. This was one of the restaurants in our monthly rotation. What struck out this time was how consistently friendly everyone was during our visit. They were nice before, but now, they really go out of their way. It went from the greetings when we got there to the thank-yous as we exited. On this occasion, I opted for the two crispy beef tacos. It came with a side of rice and refried beans. Now, good taco shells are hard to get. I like them freshly fried as opposed to the packaged variety. Judging from the lopsided shape of these, i assumed they were made there (+). They seemed a bit light in color and had a pull to them upon biting, so not the greatest (-). Maybe it has to do with the oil used and that "healthier" oils don't give the same crunch. If that were the case, and they told me that, I would've probably leaned towards a higher review. I'll try the place again and give an updated review when I do. Until then, I give them a 3.5 star review with the extra half star for superior service.

We came here on a Sunday night and were seated quickly. We sat outside. Service was quick even though they were very busy. They were very attentive. Food was amazing. We got the fajitas and some chicken something (the waiter's recommendation). Definitely will be back to try a margarita.

I don't come here much unless it is work related function. But man, I can't say enough about how tasty their food is. Don't think I've ever come across an item on their menu that I didn't like. They also have a very delicious cadillac margarita that one must try when visiting this establishment.

I participated in the Pasadena Lit Prowl a few weeks back, and El Portal hosted the end event. There were free margaritas for authors and free food for all (though I guess someone probably picked up some kind of check). My friends and I hung out in the outdoor alley patio space and had a very pleasant time. It took a long time to get our margaritas, as the bartenders gave clear priority to people without drink tickets. Can't complain too much though, because free margaritas are beautiful things. El Portal keeps some pre-made and ready to pour, and I actually like when bars do this for their cheap margaritas. Lets the tequila get to know the mixers a bit. I enjoyed mine greatly. The food was set up buffet style, and it was all pretty tasty. I especially liked the tamale bites and these tiny beef tacos, but there were chips, enchiladas, a whole delightful Mexican spread. I don't come to Pasadena for the Mexican food, but El Portal is a decent spot. It's an easy place for a margarita or two, and the food is nice and satisfying.

Just because this place is in Pasadena does not mean it's worth your time. Came here for dinner with the family and let me just say that it is the last time. Plain and simple, over priced bad Mexican food and watered down cocktails. You're better off eating at Del Taco where the food is much tastier.

I don't understand how anyone could rate El Portal below five stars. I would give it 10, if I could. There are only two other places to go for Mexican food: Mexico and San Diego. Anywhere north of those two, El Portal is the best there is, hands down. Why? First of all, let me say I have been eating Mexican food all my adult life, first in New York at El Parador, which was the best NY had to offer in Mexican food in the 1970s and then at the brief but stellar Beach House in Tribeca in the '80s. To this day, no one has made enchiladas and black beans better than the Beach House. But, I have also been dining in California since the late '70s and tried all the famous Mexican restaurants multiple times. I still remember the Red Onion fondly and of course I have been to El Cholo multiple times. El Portal is better than those two and all the others. There is simply no debate. Firstly, the atmosphere is pure Mexico. I've been to Mexico frequently and I cannot see a major difference. In fact, it reminds me of restaurants in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and Barcelona too. And I only say that as a point of comparison. It is lovely inside, cozy, warm, clean. At Christmas -- and I make sure to dine at El Portal at least once every year during the holidays -- there is a beautiful Christmas tree and a roaring fire. The interior is beautiful. There is a nice bar. I don't drink but there are free chips, salsa and cheese as well as other bar snacks and most of my dinner companions rave about the Margaritas. The menu is extensive. I have sampled a bit of everything (sin carne, naturalmente) but my consistent favorite is the cheese enchiladas with mole sauce, black beans and rice, with guacamole. The chips and salsa are always fresh. Having lived in South America for three years, I am aware of the practice of putting out pico de gallo on every table, fresh every day. El Portal does this as well, and offers various bottled hot sauces. The service is always friendly. The owner is often at the front door and greets each patron as they enter, and often bids them goodbye at the end. There is outdoor seating for warmer weather and a dessert cafe across the path in the charming arcade where El Portal is located. Parking is convenient in the back. What more can you ask? El Portal is not only my favorite Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles/Pasadena, it is my favorite restaurant, period.

I should have known something was wrong when: 1. The soup special was Clam Chowder 2. Besides us, all the patrons in there were on Medicare 3. The soup special was Clam Chowder The service was nice, which is why I am giving this review 2 stars, but the food was mediocre at best. Our lunch was $20 each, which is pricey for a lunch special. If you are looking for good Mexican food, skip this place. If you are looking for a magical doorway to transport you to a 1980's Cleveland, Ohio Mexican Cuisine Experience, El Portal is for you.

Realized I typed the review for the wrong restaurant here. Editing to remove the review. Pulling some food thoughts from my mind. The tortilla soup is crazy good. Wifey loves the steak. I typically get a three plate combo with a cheese enchilada, beef taco, and a chile relleno. They always have specials on the menu. I got a lobster quesadilla one time and loved it. The refried beans and rice are always tasty. Wifey likes the margaritas, and I get one every now and then. One will get you just right. Consistently good food. I also order food from here when I'm at Yahiras. If you're craving something, it can be ordered and brought there for you.

The staff was not too polite to us this evening, clearly focusing on the numerous private parties. We were seated outdoors and although the heaters were working, they really didn't make up for the cold weather. I felt like the staff just seemed careless about everything, from seating us to pouring water sloppily to placing trays of food directly in an area where people walked to get into the restaurant. As far as the food goes, it was average at best. Definitely not authentic. The chips and salsa were a nice touch but the chips were cold and the salsa was not spicy at all, and tasted a bit off. My shrimp tacos were so-so, but deep-fried shrimp is not what I wanted at a Mexican restaurant, nor was the sweet-salty mayonnaise on it. Everyone else in my party seemed to be pretty ambivalent about their food. It's definitely pricey for the quality, but not unexpected in this area of Pasadena. I would not return to El Portal by choice. There are plenty of better places quite near here for better food and a better experience.

Family owned restaurant undoubtedly the best Mexican restaurant in Pasadena. I've been eating there for 20 years. I've never been disappointed. It's a culinary experience and not your typical Mexican restaurant. Gourmet food that won't break the bank. You will thank me.

My wife and I come here exclusively for their green verde sauce. We used to come for the seafood fajitas, which are also excellent, but the pork and verde sauce burrito is our favorite item now. The Verde sauce is perfectly salty and sour and the price is very reasonable.

I have now been here twice, so feel I've given this restaurant a fair chance. Our first time here our service was so bad and the food was mediocre. This second time service was slightly better and the food again was just mediocre. We ordered an enchilada combo plate and 2 a la cart enchiladas. We asked for him to add some veggies, (bell peppers, onions and tomatoes). When our enchiladas came out it was basically an overload of onions and nothing else. What really ticked me off was that my a la cart enchilada ended up costing me more than a combo plate. Not to mention we paid an extra $3 bucks for the add on of onions, seriously?!?! For onions? I understand if you are putting other veggies but for onions? Oh and they charged us for the tomatoes too, which I think the forgot to put in. Horrible service and not great mexican food. We will not be back.

Was seeking a new Mexican restaurant to try and found this on yelp... I read the reviews and decided to try it...wow! Excellent service....Excellent atmosphere...Excellent food! Customer service was great and the ambience is romantic and sexy. There is a patio if you like the outdoors...I greatly recommend El Portal... I got the carne asada burrito....OMG! The meat was marinated and so tender....chips and salsa was great and the margarita (I got the grande) lets just say they hooked me up! I found a new go to spot for great Mexican food! I'll be back!

I tried to go eat here tonite with my family. I took a ticket from the parking attendant. I then proceeded to park. Then I gathered my kids up to go inside. After being told there'd be a wait, we got back in the car and proceeded to exit the parking lot. No more than 10 minutes have elapsed at this point. The attendant raced over, asks for a ticket, which I give him, and then says it will be "$2". When I object, he tells me to validate the ticket. I tell him I can't because my kids are in the car. Then he insists. Then i rummage around for the $2 ( I never have cash in 2015 anymore). I say "here's the $2, but I am going to write a one star review on yelp." He immediately backs off, and allows me to leave, not paying anything. But what the hell, here's my 1 star review anyway. Take that to the bank, greedy parking lot owner. El portal, find a less greedy parking lot owner to partner with. #customersfirst

Great restaurant for families. Pass this location many times on my way to my beauty salon and always see all the outdoor seating filled with people enjoying their meals. Took my parents here one night while they were visiting. We were able to get a booth outside. Love the lively ambiance. This restaurant bsdsically takes up the whole walkway of this small plaza. We ordered their enchiladas and burrito items. All were pretty good and filling. Service was also pretty good seeing how many people there were. They have a small lot in front or they have valet. Definitely a family restaurant. Would be good for groups.

The first time I came here was 3 stars but the second time was a solid 4! It is a great location near the Pasadena Playhouse. Make a reservation for about 1:15 before the show and you will be good. Their margaritas are solid, I prefer blended. I loved the tostada and my husband got an amazing shrimp/chicken salad that was the best item I tasted here. It is in the courtyard off Green Street (north side)!

We ate here for the first time last night with the recommendation from a friend. For a busy Saturday night, we had no wait. Quick service with chips and drinks. I ordered the mole enchiladas. Excellent! Highly recommend. Great food. My one minor issue. My son ordered a kids meal and ordered an apple juice. Kid's meal includes a soft drink. Most restaurants allow the kids to have juice too. They charged us $3.50 for a juice. A bit steep for a cup of juice for a kid.

El Portal has become our favorite Mexican restaurant! Service has always been friendly and fast, and the food has never disappointed! My favorite item to get here is the Yucatan trio ($16.00). It comes with Cochinita Pibil (oven roasted pork in anchiote spice and lime juice, wrapped in banana leaves, Poc-Chuc (grilled thin slices of pork), and my favorite, Yucatan style chicken tamale. It comes with pickled onion, rice, black bean soup, and flour/corn tortillas. At our last visit, I like the Yucatan tamales so much that I just ordered the Yucatan tamale plate ($14.50). The masa is one of the best tamale masas I've ever had. I think it's perhaps the banana leaves it's steamed in that gives it its yummy and delicious flavor. El Portal is perfect for two or a big group. There's indoor and outdoor seating available, and the outdoor section is pet-friendly. El Portal is a definitely good choice for a birthday get together. The staff enthusiastically sings for the birthday celebrant and takes out the birthday sombrero. There is valet parking available right behind the restaurant on Green Street, but we've never had an issue finding cheaper/ free street parking.

Oooh it's real good. Loved the wet burrito! So delish, and the red sauce...is something special. Margaritas are good. Service is great. Loved the rice with corn and peas in it. Next time, I will definitely try a Yucatan-influenced dish. But if you're looking for cozy, traditional Mexican with comfortable booth seating (haha, that's what I like, OK?!) then this is a reliable spot.

1 or 2 star? Hmmmmmmmmmmm There are days, I want the real deal and head to an authentic Mexican place for some tacos. If not, I'll be satisfy with Rubios if there's one around. Not sure where this restaurant fall into. We were walking on Colorado street and it's kinda hidden in the back of Arcade Lane. It wasn't too busy during lunch either. They started us off with some nice tortilla chips and salsa. My two favorite at a Mexican's place. So 1 extra star for that! It's rare for me to dine in for Mexican's food so I thought the food was kinda pricey compared to what I normally pay. Al pastor is what I usually get but I decided to give shrimps taco a try. 1 shrimp taco for $11 is kinda pricey in my opinion! It should at least come with a side of something no? The shrimps were deep fried so it was a bit oily. I did enjoy the veggies that they put in it but other than that, nothing to die for.

El Portal, I don't care if you're not super authentic. You're number one in my heart. PARKING: Medium sized lot directly south of the restaurant. It fills up pretty quickly on Playhouse nights, but there's some street parking if you're willing to walk. FOOD: -Complimentary chips and salsa: Our chips are always served warm, and the salsa has a nice, subtle kick. We always ask for chip refills! -Shrimp tostada: Granted, I didn't eat the shell because I loaded up on the warm chips, but this is perfect if you're looking for something lighter. I was pleasantly impressed that the shrimp were cooked to perfection with nice grill marks on the outside. -Carne Asada: This dish is basically a huge steak with beans, rice, and salsa. Medium rare means medium rare (thank you!) here, but at least 1/8 of my steak was inedible due to tendon/fat. DRINK: -Blended margaritas: I've tried both the peach and the strawberry Cadillac margarita, and I personally prefer the strawberry. It's heavy on the strawberry flavor - order the grande! SERVICE: My boyfriend and I have always received amazing service here. They're super fast with taking drink orders (gimme my marg and give it to me now!), and the food arrives relatively quickly. Everyone is very friendly and attentive. Our new go-to for taco tuesdays ..or mexican mondays...or thirsty thursdays...you get the picture.

Just ate here tonight. They were really busy but we got a table fast. I must say this food is average at best. My friend said the margaritas were the best (nope) it's average. If you want the best margarita then go 1 block west to La Fiesta Grande. Their drinks kick ass but there food is also average. If you want great Mexican food then you need to go to LA bottom line. Just tons of white people at el patrol. If you don't see Mexicans eating there then it's not good. I probably won't be back unless one of you yelpers invite me and offer to pay.

Ordered a steak fajita and enjoyed every bite if it. The meat was flavorful and tender. Service was friendly but it took well over 20 minutes to get the food. Place was about 75% full. I'd definitely be back for more in very near future.

What I enjoy most about El Portal is their inviting patio situated midway between Colorado and Green. This is a convenient and popular pre-Playhouse dinner spot, so come early if you're on a time crunch. My first visit several months ago left me not especially impressed. I don't recall what I ordered then, but it was rather mediocre and overly priced. This visit was much improved. My friend and I received good recommendations on their margarita selection and were happy with our choices. I'm still not crazy about their chips, but their salsa is good. I ordered their enchiladas sirenitas which is a seasonal menu item. Lobster, shrimp, crab, and spinach enchiladas topped with avocado and sour cream and served with spanish rice and a side salad. It was ridiculously delicious, and I don't think that's just the margarita talking! (Though it may have helped.) I think L. had shrimp tacos. Whatever it was she enjoyed them immensely, as well. We were both stuffed to the gills when we left. Like uncomfortably full but also so happy. And we managed to waddle our way across the street afterward - no assistance required.

Service, as other reviews have mentioned, could use some improvement. My server was always in a hurry even though it wasn't busy hour. And he didn't remind me that my plate is extremely hot. I almost jumped when I touch the plate - if I had grabbed it I could get hurt. Food is decent though, especially if you appreciate Mexican cuisine. Their special sauce was impressive but high in calories. A good spot if you are looking for nice, inexpensive Mexican food. For that I would rate 4 stars, since there is not a 3.5.

El Portal has a great atmosphere. The outdoor seating is excellent and the food is top drawer. Their salsa is so fresh and vibrant, it's one of the best salsa's I've ever had. The entrees never disappoint. I've had quite a few things from the menu and they'll all been great. The service can be a little slow at times but that's mainly due to the laid-back nature of this restaurant. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

We were extremely disappointed with our experience at El Portal. The atmosphere on the patio is nice, and the food looked amazing. The salsa was also decent. However, they clearly forgot to put our order in. Instead of telling us that, 20 minutes and two baskets of chips later the waiter asks us to "remind him" what we ordered. He told us it would be out in 3 minutes. A few minutes later he says it'll be just out. At the 30 minute mark we asked for our check. He said he was sorry but that it was really busy and they had to deal with a large party. He also said that our food was ready. Sorry, bud. You could have at least sent a manager to talk with us. Heck, the manager standing right by us (two tables over, doing nothing) could have asked us how we were. Now we will never go back, and tell all our friends to avoid this restaurant. Too bad, because we ring up quite the large happy hour bill.

When I was in high-school, I had a buddy who was Mexican. (Like, he actually said he was Mexican, so don't be like "he was probably Guatemalan and you are too stupid to know the difference.") Like straight-up hombre... I'm a reverse coconut (white on the outside, brown on the inside)! Right! So my buddy; he would invite me to his house for family events and it was great. There were like 150 people in a three-bedroom one-bath house that just poured all out everywhere. Backyard, side-yard, front-yard, you know everywhere. I miss those days. I drove a 1984 Honda Civic with 175,000 miles that had a bumper that dangled. I was the man! El Portal is kind of like that. There is the main restaurant, which in my analogy is kind of like the living room of my old buddy's house. But they have patios (plural) that actually have indoor booths on the outdoor patio; and at least one or more storefront shops that just sort of extend the eating spaces. It is as if they have a motto that "come hell or high water" a customer shall never have to wait to be seated! You may be sitting on milk cartons by the trash cans in the parking lot, but damn-it there was no wait! On the night we were there, we were seated at the ice-cream shop / coffee station / Mariachi band resting area. In other words, our table was kind of like in front of a freezer case (sort of like at Starbucks) and immediately next to us were several old Mariachi guys who would rest (between tunes) in our general area. By the way, where can I get one of those outfits!? I think I would look divine in bright green leather pants with sequins and a sombrero! If I could play the trumpet I'd totally have a new career! Anyhow, the food sadly was average. The chips stale. The service mediocre. While we had an okay time; I probably won't go back anytime soon.

Great food and excellent service. The drinks from the bar are great. There is a live singer in the lobby that adds a nice touch. I had the Carnitas. Order the guacamole it's awesome.

So, having now left the US of A for about 2.5 years, my trips back to the USA always involve a place to get some texmex. The last time I was back stateside I went to a very disappointing place up in Seattle. This time since I was in SoCal, I figured, hey, there should be pretty good mexican in SoCal yeah? Well, yes, El Portal is about 5 minutes from my where my friends live in Pasadena, and where they bring all their visitors. I was of no exception. So, anyway, we go to El Portal and I order a steak fajita burrito. Standard stuff that comes with rice and cheese / sauce on the burrito. The meat was done very well and grilled to perfection. A bit chewy in some bits, but otherwise, really not a bad burrito. The veggies were not slimy and were still rather crunchy. The quality is certainly not high class mexican but it certainly hits the spot. Oh, and the salsa with tortilla chips.... good salsa, warm chips. thumbs up!

Yum. Alvaro is my fave. So is their food. Oh and bread pudding. Always get the bread pudding. And the guacamole. It's worth it.

Came here for a birthday dinner and the restaurant is really cute. They have warm Spanish decor and a live mariachi band on Sunday evenings. Unfortunately, the restaurant uses the cafe next door for overflow seating when the main restaurant is full and that is where we were seated. The cafe is not bad but it is not as cute as the main restaurant. We ordered the "fresh" guacamole, Yucatan trio which includes the cochinita pibil, chicken tamale, and poc-chuc, enchiladas de mole, steak picado, chicken picado, and a chicken fajita burrito. The guacamole was just sad. The full order comes with 3 sorbet size scoops of guacamole and 10 chips. It was a good thing that they give free chips and salsa. I think I make better guacamole at home. As for the entrees, the steak picado was the best dish. It was flavorful and the meat was very tender. The chicken picado was also very tender but I thought the steak one tasted better. I had a small bite of the enchiladas de mole and it was good but I don't think I could eat very much of it. The Yucatan trio was really disappointing. The cochinita pibil and the poc-chuc were both pretty dry and didn't have much flavor. The chicken tamale did not have much chicken. I thought that was the same case for the chicken fajita burrito...it took awhile before we realized that they had brought us a vegetarian burrito instead of the chicken fajita one. We were pretty full by the time we discovered this and didn't bother to have it swapped. The mariachi band was fun. It was an all female group and they came over to sing happy birthday. The server also brought out a complimentary flan and a big sombrero for the birthday girl. Service otherwise was fine but not very warm or friendly. I may have given El Portal a more positive review if I had discovered it earlier. However, we recently discovered Chichen itza for Yucatan food and the food there is just amazing. I may go back to El Portal if I'm looking for a cute place for drinks but I am going to Chichen Itza for the food.

First time there and I don't know why. It's awesome. Sat at the bar. Loved it. They had a meatloaf special on the menu. If you ever see that on the menu just order that and smile to yourself throughout the meal. It's the best meatloaf I've ever eaten. The sauce they put on it is to die for. Just get it and thank me for mentioning it here later. :) Oh yeah and besides that the place is just wonderful. I will be back soon.

3.5 stars is right where it should be. The service is decent and the food is pretty tasty (love the salsa). Love the patio, it's beautiful. My skinny margarita was on the sweet side ($11 for a small). The chips don't seem homemade. And the side salad was blahh. Food wasn't extremely affordable either compared to other Mexican joints in town.

We were looking for a nice sunny location and this was perfect. They were kind enough to move our table so that it would be directly in the sun (I got my vit D fix). I got the Yucatan trio which was just the right amount of food, each item was much smaller than the normal portion so it wasn't overwhelming. Everything was delicious. The margaritas were okay, nothing to complain about. Service was attentive. And they have their own dedicated parking lot. I can see this being a good location for groups as long as you make a reservation.

Love the food, love the service, love the specials. This place is a hidden gem. I recommend any and all of their specialties. Their weekly specials are just that, special! If you are looking for your average enchilada/burrito/taco place, sure they are good there also, but the specials are always fantastic, plus the Ultima Margarita is one of the best around!

I came here the night before my birthday for the first time. I was excited about trying this place, especially since it was one of the restaurants with discounts from the Nite on the Town card. Because we had a reservation for 8:00, we were seated within five minutes on a Friday night (and it was packed!). And our waiter was prompt with bringing us menus and water. We were seated outside on the patio. The weather was nice and temperate. The ambiance outside is relaxing; there are christmas tree lights all over the patio. It's lively but not overwhelming. There are a lot of people but it's not very loud. While this is a Mexican restaurant, it's also a Yucatan cuisine restaurant. I decided to stay true to my decision to trying new things. I decided on ordering the Cadillac margarita and the chilaquiles. Both were absolutely delicious! The margarita was the perfect balance between mixer and tequila. The chilaquiles were spicy yet flavorful. Altogether it was a fantastic meal and our waiter was nothing but helpful and polite. I love this place and will definitely come again.

Great food and great micheladas! The plates are very traditional and quality... You can taste it! When the weather is nice, sitting outside is very charming. The bar seems to be the spot, especially during their animal tequila tasting

What a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant that is SO DAMN GOOD to go to!!! It's inexpensive, located privately, and has the best food and margaritas. It was casual and romantic in setting, very privately situated. I got this amazing to die for pumpkin soup special. It's seasonal. Wish I knew the recipe! And I had a strawberry margarita, but should have opted for a Cadillac like my guy friend had. He had a chicken enchilada dish with rice and beans, which was amazing. I kind of wanted to trade, so we did in the end. And definitely finished our margaritas!!

This is a great gem on Green St. in Pasadena. Frankly I like the food here a LOT better than other options in town which have better name recognition. They have the standard fare you expect from a Mexican joint, but some menu items you won't find elsewhere in town. We did not have margarita's, so can't comment on how good/strong those are. Tip - ask for the hot sauce. They make their own / perfect amount of heat (it is quite hot for those who don't like spicy stuff). We'll definitely be back (quite often - I know this place has been here a long time, but I've never been until now. Mijares & El Chollo no more)...

El Portal offers attractive, although typical decor for a Mexican restaurant. The food ranges from standard American/Mexican edible to some really good Yucatan regional dishes. Definitely try some of those! Service is friendly and efficient. The bar makes some excellent cocktails. A good place to enjoy a decent meal.

Let me tell you a story. My knitting group meets every thursday at this restaurant, so I was sitting in class learning how to make short citations when it happened. You know that feeling, it starts somewhere in the bottom of your stomach and slowly grows until you get an all energy consuming...CRAVING. I had it bad, all my mind could think about was how much I wanted some mole. It could have been anything, a mole dipped green apple, as long as I had some mole. My stomach growled, my mouth began to water, please oh please, let this mexican restaurant have the mole of my dreams. I finished class, went home, grabbed my knitting then walked over. I met my group and anxiously sat down to scour the menu for the object of my hearts desire. And there it was, those magical words. Mole enchiladas served with black beans and mexican rice. I ordered it, attempted to make small talk while I awaited my culinary destiny. At last, the moment arrived, a piping hot plate of mole enchiladas that looked heavenly, with that oaxaca cheese sprinkled over my black beans and sesame seeds atop my enchiladas. I waited a few minutes, steeling myself because having never had these what if, gasp, they were a disappointment? I took a bite and my mind exploded, the taste was so good. Not to sweet, the perfect bite of savory, it was delicious. I scarfed down my food so fast that you would have thought that I just climbed down the himalayas and hadn't seen food in over four months. When I finally stopped shoveling food in my mouth, I was pleased to see that the craving monster which had been awoken in me had subsided and I sat in a muddy haze of post feast bliss. The only reason this place doesn't get a 5 in my opinion is because the service is only so so, they don't refill water fast enough, and when our server was leaving she kind of hurried us along. But even with okay service I would return, because this is a place that has truly cravable mole.

You'd think if you buy a 14 dollar drink and accidentally spill it when it was almost full somebody would offer you another drink or at least clean it up for you... Pretty disappointed in the service today

I agree with most the reviewers here, the food is great, especially if you like cuisine from the Mexican Yucatan region. However the problem is their customer service, the waiters either take their time or forget your order(s). You have to literally flag them down, get out of your table and MAYBE then you might get their attention ... and then they brought items to the wrong table! All the waiters could use training in customer service classes. In fact the only one somewhat on top of it customer service wise, was the busboy who brought chips and salsa fairly regularly... or at least came by the table more often. In summary great food...LOUSY SERVICE.

I think the most important and lasting impression of a traditional hot-plate Mexican joint is the chips, and El Portal's don't disappoint. They're hot and greasy and unsalted and the salsa is good, but they're also unpretentious - you know it's not someone back there slicing up and deep-frying tortillas to order, making the pre-dinner chip so darn good that you eat five pounds of them and don't even want your meal. No, the chips at El Portal are a great indicator of what to expect for the whole meal - quality, standard, hot, honest Mexican food. The Yucután Trio was bomb. a chicken tamale, some chochinita pibil and a grilled pork cutlet. The cutlet was rubbed with something outta this world and served with fresh avocado. The pibil was served out of the banana leaf, which was actually kind of nice because that thing always gets in the way and especially would have on that crowded trio plate, and was amazingly good - just as tender and fall-apart as you could hope. The tamale was good, too - just a touch of spice. My fiancee had the chile relleno, which was a bit bready but super cheesy and super good. The horchata is nothing to write home about (and no refills = lame), but then again, it's usually not. It's horchata. The servers were super nice, the mariachis were very nice and not overpoweringly loud, and the whole ambiance was lighthearted - everyone around us was having a good time. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love this place. Such a hidden gem with great ambiance! The margaritas are to die for. My personal favorite is the "Natural". Luis always takes great care of my guests and I- sooo sweet and accommodating. Definitely one of the better Mexican restaurants in Pasadena, hands down.

The food just isn't good. The rice/beans that come on every meal always feel like they've been sitting out for an hour. If you ask for a replacement salad instead, it's just a bland, tasteless mixed green salad. I've tried almost everything here, and have felt sick after each meal. If you want Mexican food, go to La Metate instead.

This place was busy for a rainy wednsday night. We were seated right away. Service from Omar was very good. Order the Cadillac margaritas, they are very tasty and use good tequila. The food was very tasty, fresh and hot. Fresh beans and perfectly cooked tacos. Omar was very attentive and had good service manners. I would definitely recommend this local , non chain joint.

I've been eating at El Portal for about 5 years and love the tamales Yucatan. Margaritas are good, too. I always suggest El Portal to friends who come in from out of town. It has a relaxed atmosphere that's good for business, casual, dinner with a friend, or dinner with a significant other. I like waiters and waitresses who check in with me 1-2 times during a meal, and come over when i need something, and the folks at El Portal do that, so I feel my service has been good. I've heard from others (on and off of Yelp) that the service is slow. Parking is easy. It's available on Green Street and in the parking lot (self park) off of Green Street.

I've only eaten food from here twice and it's been great. The first time I tried their food was when my boyfriend's family ordered it to go. I got a carne asada plate and split it with my boyfriend's avocado salad. The portions were huge and the food was delicious! The second time I tried their food was when my boyfriend and his family decided to dine in. The ambience was nice and their chips and salsa were good too. I ordered another salad this time (I believe it was the grilled chicken one with pickled onions) and it was absolutely tasty! Their menu includes so many dishes from different parts of the world. I thought it was pretty neat.

I find El Portal to be inconsistent at best. The last couple of times, the food was brought out cold. By the time the server came over, I was over it. Service is also inconsistent. Shoddy is more like it. Indifferent. The last waiter we had, I think would have been much happier to work the bar and have shots of tequila while pouring for customers.

My brother-in-law was visiting from Tennessee and wanted to have Mexican food. We love their chips and salsa. The bad part is if you eat too many chips then there won't be room left for the main course. Our lunch was good and everyone enjoyed their food. We sat at the outside area and had a relaxing lunch.

A perfect venue for lunch before catching a Sunday matinee at the Pasadena Playhouse, especially on a beautiful, sunny December afternoon. The patio is very comfortable. El Portal is located in what I know as The Arcade. I haven't been to The Arcade in years. Service was attentive. Enjoyed the margaritas. Shared a plate of seafood fajitas with a friend. Very good. Will return when I attend my next play. Would like to explore other menu options.

It was not an eventful experience at el portal on 10/25/13. We waited to be seated or at least to know how long the wait would be and no one was available. I made eye contact with a male and tried flagging him down and ignored me. I then asked the bartender if someone can acknowledge us and never heard again. I then went back and the host went to sit another couple... I told him we were there first and he claimed he did not see us and still sat the other couple. When he came back he said that it would tske approx 30 minutes because they were at capacity. I asked for the manager and he was nowhere to be found. At that point we left. It is sad that the customer service really lacks here. I won't be recommending this place to anyone. I am sure the food is great but they need to overhaul and take some customer service classes!

My family and I have been coming here for years because of the great food and wonderful service. Abel and the El Portal staff are always so friendly and accommodating, even on busy nights. I usually order the vegetarian tostada with no cheese and extra broccoli, or the vegetarian burrito with no cheese. The portions are generous. The margaritas and guacamole are also pretty fantastic. I hope they add more vegetarian and vegan dishes to their menu.

man, i'm really stuffed after eating here this afternoon. trying my best to quit overeating on account of these damn yelp reviews (heeheehee). so, me and my sis came here after going on a tour of dodger stadium. we were starving and had a late lunch. this place is located in arcade lane on colorado blvd in pasadena off oak knoll and across the street from vroman's bookstore and a laemmle theater. it's tucked in the back, away from the street. the interior has a mexican theme going with a bar in front just as you enter. the server seated us promptly and gave us complimentary chips and a nicely spiced salsa which were very good. we both ordered the yucatan trio platter with an horchata to drink. the platter came with a portion of cochinita pibil, yucatan tamal, and poc-chuc. i also ordered an a la carte beef enchilada cuz of my insane need to taste everything for my reviews. the cochinita pibil which was like a spicy carnitas was excellent. loved the flavors with this one. it was so juicy but not greasy at all like some other places i've been to lately. this was accompanied with pickled red onions and a nice subtle chocolate-flavored salsa. it was great eating with the black beans soup, spanish rice, and warm tortillas. the poc-chuc was a thin slice of pork with a nice adobo flavor. this was topped with a couple slices of avocado. it too was excellent. really enjoyed the taste of this one. it had a nice garlic with what seemed like a soy saucy flavor. wish the plate came with more than the one slice. the yucatan tamal was amazing. although a little lukewarm, it was so moist and had an incredible smokey banana leaf flavor to it. i could've definitely eaten more than one. what a great taste. the enchilada and horchata, on the other hand, paled in comparison. they were both standard run-of-the-mill stuff that you could find at any mexican joint. nothing special about em. both were good though but compared to the stuff on the yucatan plate, they were average tasting. i was pretty full after eating lunch but we ordered dessert anyway. we both had the flan. i had a mexican hot chocolate while my sister ordered a cup of coffee with it. the flan wasn't all that. it had a nice flavor and liberal amounts of cinnamon. but it was overcooked and had a scrambled-eggy kind of texture not the creamy kind that you'd expect from top notch flan. oh well. the hot chocolate wasn't anything special either. although, my sister's coffee was extremely smooth and had a hint of cinnamon flavor. very nice. i was very satisfied with el portal. the service was prompt and very attentive, and the food was above average. i would definitely come back for more of the yucatan trio. just gotta remember not to overstuff myself on account of these reviews....

Last night was my second time to dine at El Portal in probably more than a decade. Now I understand why it took me so long to give it another try. The place is nice, service was great, making the reservations was hassle free but the most important- The Food...., the Food is just not that great. My apologies but i did not enjoy my poc chuc dish. The pork was not tasty and neither was it tender as should be expected. There is no happy hour!! What? The large margaritas are worth almost a regular dinner! Worse of all, I took my group of colleagues from my Association to have our meeting here last night and I noticed that most of them half-heartedly touched their plates. Hmmmm...Though I did have my almost full-plate bagged...I gave it to the homeless...

A nice sit down Mexican restaurant off of Green Street in Pasadena and away from Old Town. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. I love the fish taco or beef taco plates. They also have outdoor seating, a big plus.

Meh, is right. waaaaay overrated. Watered down margaritas, watered down guacamole (weird) Pibil was just OK, a little sweet in my opinion. Odd crowd. Family friendly. Slooooooooooow service. I do not plan on going back. There are better restaurants out there to waste my time coming back to another mediocre Mexican food restaurant.

Very nice staff and great food. I've been here about 5 times and they always acknowledge that I've returned. Their food is top notch. I've had chips and guacamole, fish dishes, enchiladas. They have fantastic specials and of course, the traditional combinations. Patio seating is available too.

This place was just OK for me. The prices are good, and they have a nice selection of food, but it certainly wasn't the best Mexican food I have ever had. I ordered the cheese enchilada combination plate (a good bet when you are looking to compare mexican places). I wasn't blown away, but again maybe their meat offerings are more tasty. Everyone in my party had the same impression, not bad, but not great. The one thing I did enjoy was the guacamole. It definitely tasted homemade. We sat out in the patio area, and the service was slow. It was a beautiful day though, so we didn't mind the wait.

I've been here twice ... I threw a Cinco de Mayo party and for a date. I LOVE IT. Service - I'm big on service w/a smile ... seriously, when we're shelling out the dolla' bills ... and tipping ya'll -- give me great service ... AND this place delivers! For my Cinco de Mayo party they accommodated my quickly growing party of 7 to 12. The had the mariachi come over, free appetizers for the beginning and so many Cinco de Mayo specials. Honestly, some of the best ever! For the date, it was his birthday and I brought a cake -- and I didn't even have to ask them to bring it out after dinner -- they were on top of it and were so great about bringing it out. Food - So damn good. Chips served w/2 different kinds of salsa. I highly rec'd the yucatan tamale ... best tamale I've ever tasted in a restaurant! :-) Ambiance - The decor and patio make the experience great. The bar area is small but cozy enough where you'll quickly be making buddies as you drink your margaritas. Honestly, a great Mexican food place -- not traditional Mexican food, mind you ... and you'll love it!

We arrived 30 minutes early for our dinner reservation and the restaurant was able to seat us earlier than expected. Since I had ate an Indian brunch earlier, I wasn't very hungry. I ordered a combo plate of chicken enchilada, chile relleno, rice and beans and a couple of pina coladas. I'm not a big fan of how much cheese most restaurants put in chile rellenos.

This place has got amazing salsa! Their green verde sauce changed my mind which isn't the easiest thing to accomplish. They made me appreciate bell pepper flavor and opened my eyes to whole new food experiences. So thank you El Portal!

Place has pretty good food. I would give it 5 stars, but the price is somewhat high. I guess its catered more for old town pasadena folks. Service is great. We went during restaurant week, and they give you TONS of food, but for a pretty penny. If your looking for a nice sit down family atmosphere restaurant, this is the place.

I have been here several times. Their margaritas are okay, but kind of expensive. I was very impressed with the food. I have really only ordered the yucatan stuff, and I liked it a lot. Particularly the cochinita pibil which is a yucatecan pork carnitas cooked in banana leaves (so delicious!). I would recommend this place, it isn't crazy expensive and the food is pretty good!

came back with bf. still excellent service as always. this time, got the chili relleno and tamale. ohhhh my gosh, that tamale was amazing. but -2 for not having the french onion soup anymore. and the chili relleno being undercooked. and bf's fish tacos weren't that great either. nor the dessert (brownie a la mode -- they actually messed up our order: we asked for dulce de leche ice cream instead of the vanilla ice cream it came with, but they gave us the brownie with vanilla ice cream, and a separate order of dulce de leche ice cream... and charged us for both). maybe an off-night? will probably come back though -- hopefully it will be better.

I had El Portal today for the first time & was not disappointed. I ordered the mole enchiladas. The sauce was perfect, both in texture & taste. The service was a little subpar, but it was probably because there were 15 of us.

I've always had really good food here. I was a little down on the service this last time (I ordered something to go at the bar and had to remind the girl that I was still there) but I have to say the food is truly flavorful and good here. Totally worth it if you are in the area. Love that it's kind of hidden away as well. Check it out!

YUMMM! What a great place and I can't believe I hadn't known about it before. Kind of a hidden gem. Food was amazing: Cheese Enchiladas w/Mole and a Vegetarian Tostada, Fresh Guacamole - so good and skinny margaritas, a girl's dream! You need to drive up the driveway a bit so it wasn't THAT easy to find. Great ambiance - you can eat inside or out. I'm returning! And prices... very reasonable.

The BEST mole sauce I have ever had. SUPER delicious horchata. Tamales in banana leaves or corn leaves, one of the many ways they serve up traditional Yucatan and Mexican food. EXCELLENT service. GREAT combos. I think I'm going to go there again and again until I've tried everything, who wants to go with?

Senors y senoritas - I always dine at El Portal prior to attending the Pasadena Playhouse. I think the food is fine (bueno), but not exceptional. Good cheese enchiladas, a decent beef taco, very good rice, and okay beans. The chips are always great, but I'm not that enamored of their salsa. The guacamole is decent. Their Diet Coke is faboo. Service has always been good. As a point of reference, I like Casa Vega better (mucho bueno), but I like this place better than Don Cuco and Ernie's. I don't know from mole sauce - is it made from moles? I had mole sauce once, at El Cholo, and I thought I would vomit on the table - haven't had it since. I don't eat fat heaters (fajitas), because they didn't really exist at Mexican restaurants that I frequented until about 1983. I have no interest in food invented in 1983. All in all - I like El Portal (The Portal, for those who need a translation). Adios.

  • Robin W.

I like that this place is family run and has been around for a long time, but c'mon guys, you gotta step up your game if you're going to charge prices like these for Mexican in Pasadena. Food lacks flavor, freshness, and originality. OK margaritas, but that's not enough to bring me back to El Portal even though it is only 100 yards from my house.

  • Gillian And Ken B.

My boyfriend and I just finished eating at El Portal for the first time. Ken ordered a cadillac margarita while I enjoyed a mango margarita. The cadillac was "big, strong, and good", while mine was tasty but had a little too much lime. Our chips and salsa were pretty average. I ordered the chicken picado with corn tortillas, it was delicious. Ken had a combo chicken taco and cheese enchilada. When I asked Ken what he thought of his meal he replied, "Pros, the chicken was delicious, loaded with toppings, cheese and lettuce. The cheese enchilada was large and cheesey. I recommend people to order the verde sauce (green). Cons, taco shell was awkwardly fried making it extremely messy. Unfortunately sour cream and guacamole didn't come with the meal." The service was well done and the atmosphere was welcoming. This would be a good place to go for almost any occasion, even just a drink at the bar.

El Portal is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Pasadena. Its 'upscale' Mexican, but the extra few dollars/meal gets you great food, excellent service, and nice interior/ambiance. The outdoor patio is quiet and intimate for afternoon meals. Try any and everything on the Yucatan specials part of the menu. I've had to stop myself a couple times from drivig 2.5 hours just for their cochinita pibil. And the margaritas aren't too shaby either. Of note: A. The owner's son owns Yahaira's cafe which is in the same alley, facing Colorado blvd. Their hours are limited (breakfast and lunch only, I think) but this is also worth a try. Really, really good salads. Really, really nice service. B. The owner's have also invested in the coffee shop in the same complex. The woman who co-owns the place is wonderful. They also have ice cream. Food can be ordered from either El Portal or Yahaira's and delivered to the coffee shop for those long haul work/study sessions. This is probobly the greatest thing i've ever experienced.

For beef fajitas in this neighborhood, it's El Portal, not La Fiesta Grande. The price is better and ingredients are fresher. Also, there's something about their chips and salsa. When you are starved and they put the chips and salsa in front of you, just give in. Alternatively, you could save the salsa for the fajitas. Also, for a smaller meal, two carne asada tacos do the trick. Muy bueno. Service is very good.

Friends daughter celebrated Christening here. I enjoyed the food. Ambiance is great. Service is awesome. Had some virgin margarita and they're good.

El Portal offers great ambience, great food, awesome Cadillac Margaritas at reasonable prices. My favorite dish is the chicken enchiladas de mole - delicioso! This is a family owned restaurant. The owner is very sweet and welcoming. He takes great pride in his establishment and aims to please his dining guests with his appetizing menu selection. The service is excellent - always attentive and friendly. My family and I are loyal customers and highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion.

Since we were limited to the Pasadena area, because my girl's mother doesn't like to leave her neighborhood, it seemed like El Portal was my best bet for Mexican food, specifically Yucateco food. I walked in with low expectations, but left quite satisfied. Being a Friday night, the restaurant was pretty full, especially the bar area, but were seated within five minutes without a reservation. Complimentary chips and salsa were consistently flowing, chips were great but salsa had a zero spice rating. We also ordered some margaritas, that were just ok. As for our dishes, we ordered the Yucatan trio that comes with the Cochinita Pibil, Poc-Chuc, and a tamale, the enchiladas de mole, and the cochinita pibil plate. The cochinita and enchiladas and were great, as well as the accompanying rice and beans, but I was a bit disappointed with the poc-chuc. Its marinade was just a bit too bland for my taste. Otherwise, all three dishes were great, and I recommend the Yucatan Trio for those of you that are not familiar with Yucateco cuisine so you can familiarize yourself with it. This is a great little restaurant and service was outstanding. Prices are reasonable for it being in Pasadena, and an overall nice restaurant if you're looking for some classy Mexican dining.

I was craving Mexican food yesterday so I decided to check this place out for dinner. It was pretty popping at 9pm last night. They have a really cute patio area but u chose not to sit outside since t was so hot. The location is massive they have several rooms and a full bar. The strawberry margarita was to die for. We ordered a pitcher and it had enough for 3 drinks each. However, they could have added a little more tequila to it. I ordered a chicoquita and that was so delicious! The portions were massive. The only item that was mediocre was the guacamole. It just didn't have enough flavor to it. But he salsa and pico de gallo definitely made up for it. I would say after last night will become one of my go to Mexican restaurants!

Yum Yum, It's a nice place in a cute town. The food is not your run of the mill Mexican. It is fresh and light. They specialize in Yucatan but they do have some "regular" fair. Their Mole Enchiladas are awesome. The service is good and they are accommodating. One day myself and a coworker took orders from our office it turned out to be about 25 orders for lunch they don't deliver but our office is close. I faxed them the order called and made sure they had it and when we went to pick it up everything was there and perfect . The office was really pleased. Try it. It's not a huge place but it's nice and cozy and there is even patio seating on a nice afternoon or a hot California night.

This was once the number one Mexican restaurant selected by Pasadena News. It has a creative menu and a variety of cocktails. Its best is Yucatan cuisine, using Yucatan spice. They use a lot of achiote, so the dishes appear colorful, mostly red, however it is not spicy. I alo like the fish, chicken or carnita wrapped in banana leaves. The Yucatan Trio is also very good with three different types of meat. The Chayotes Rellennos is also very good with Salsa and rice.. The strawberry, mango margarita as well as the Mojito and Tequila are excellent liquor that goes well with the Mexican cuisine.

Horrendous! after ordering we made it through 4 rounds of chips and salsa. it was about 45 minutes in between ordering and the arrival of food at our table. unacceptable. the yucatan trio- tamale was good and the pork chop was good, however, cochinta pibil was deathly dry, rice beans and salsa did go nicely though the thursday specialty fish was good in terms of quantity, but the fish taste was unremarkable. not to mention all the food lukewarm upon arrival at the table. also sitting outside on the patio near the entrance comes with a lot of noise/echo/reverb from the building and hall so try to sit closer to the parking lot to avoid that

One of my absolute favorite places to eat! Great menu variety ( Enchiladas de Mole, my favorite were the Panuchos) and the Micheladas were perfect. They always had good sized portions and the staff was always attentive. Bonus for the Mariachi and Trios that would show up in the evenings.

El Portal was a good experience. The 4 stars is for the "fresh strawberry margarita's" though not for the food. The Yucatan food experience I rate at 3 stars. I prefer food that is packed with more flavor. The service was very pleasant and the staff are attentive. This would be a good place for large groups and families. The restaurant is tucked behind a large parking lot so it's a bit difficult to spot when you turn on Green St. Try El Portal and I'm sure you won't be disappointed :-)

The Chimichanga is to die for! The food her is awesome, but I am disappointed in the limey guacamole. My coworkers and I love coming here since we are rarely disappointed. They chips and salsa are okay, but the main dishes are way better! I brought my mom here a week ago and she loved her Tostada. The prices are great and their Spanish Rice is just amazing! I will be returning very soon! Oh, and the place looks gorgeous around Christmas time and they always have a live tree that smells wonderful!

After reading pretty good rating, we've decided to check out the place. Big mistake! To our surprise, they charge $3.00 for adding soup or salad although online menu says, it comes with meal if you order under "mexican specials" items. I mentioned it to manager for it. Soup was very salty, I guess it had been sitting on the pot for a long time. Not to mention Budweiser $5.50? Really? Tried Margarita which was weak. We had Chicken Fajitas and Chicken Tequila, Fajitas was okay but we had better in the past. And for Chicken Tequila, I tried one bite and that was it. It tasted like they heat it up in the microwave and put some source on them. Not so fresh taste! Declined a "to go box" for it. Save your money and go to other places, I don't understand why people rating high on this place.

The panuchos are amazing! The pickled onion topping them is what gives them that amazing kick....great little restaurant...its a very comfortable atmosphere with lots of locals and the staff is nice It's VERY middle class.I've been going there for years and I recommend it...its tasty Mexican food...with wonderful dishes from the Yucatan......I'm tired of what passes off as Mexican food in Los Angeles so this place is a nice respite...I'm also into comfortable places to hang with friends and family...so this place does has that.

Cute Mexican place on Green St. w free 1 hr parking in the back lot (entrance off Green). 4.5 stars for the: -Panuchos - really delicious chicken on fried tortillas with a black bean spread, topped w avocado, onions, and tomatoes. Definitely a Yucatan dish and not classically what you expect from a Mexican restaurant, but sooooo good. -Pumpkin soup - amazing and slightly sweet and spicy. Only available during the autumn/winter. -Chicken quesadilla - for such a simple dish, they did it well ... shredded chicken instead of cubed. I'm not even a chicken person, but I really liked it. 3 stars for the: -Carne asada burrito - it was average; nothing amazing.

Why haven't I reviewed El Portal? Because it doesn't need a Yelp Review. This place is the primordial birth place of savory and sweet tasting Mexican food in Pasadena. None shall oppose this truth. So say we all.

  • Adriana C.

Coming from a Mexican family, I am very picky when it comes to Mexican cuisine. El Portal is one mouth-watering restaurant. It is one of the few restaurants in the Los Angeles area that specializes in foods from the Yucatan penninsula region in southwest Mexico. I have been to El Portal twice and have found the food mouth watering. If you've never tried food from this region, I recommend the Yucatan Trio, which gives you samples of three popular dishes: Poc-chuc is a delicious grilled pork with garlic; cochinita pibil is a tender piece of pork served over a banana leave; and a Yucatan chicken tamal. It is served with black bean soup, rice and pickled onions. Another dish I've had and devoured were the panuchos. They are similar to tostadas but are not fried. Panuchos are four small corn tortillas, slightly sauteed, with black beans, grilled chicken, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, topped with a slice of avocado. The restaurant is located in a charming courtyard off of Colorado Boulevard. There is patio seating, which is great on warm sunny days.

My family and I went here to celebrate my grandpas 88th birthday yesterday. I ordered the "SEA FOOD FAJITAS" which was delicious!!I highly recommended but then again it may have tasted so good because I hadnt eaten all day. Its a nice atmosphere.Muchachas serenaded my grandpa with his temporary sombrero they lended him and some maracas . I hear that the margaritas are really good so until next time I'm leaving this as in "ok" place..I love passadena and plan on dining out here more often...

Great mexican food, and I love mexican food. Can't believe fellow yelpers only give it 3.5 stars overall. Must not be the food, but the non-food things (service, wait time, etc.). Strictly judging by the food quality / taste though, this place is damn good. Its kinda small, so tables fill up quickly. There is no where better in old town pasadena area for mexican food. I highly recommend it.

Hi I went to this Restaurant today with a couple Friend's we order Margaritas and mojitos, the drink were fine until the second round when they serve me a margarita with lips stick all over the glass, that was very disgusting, after I did order a Yucatan Trio ( THE SPECIALTY OF THE HOUSE) and then when I was half way of my dish guess what happen? I did almost swallow a big long and tick curly hair that was in my cochinita pibil, that was the most disgusting thing from that place, that was my first time there with my friend, we did talk after with manager about it and he put the all bill on the house and he did apologize to us for what happen and he did offer us a free meal for the next time we will come back, but personally I don't care about the free meal. I will never go to that place never ever in my life again, even if they wont charge me nothing, also the food was really poor in FLAVOR and no taste at all, the only thing that I did like it from this place was the CHIPS & GUACAMOLE that's all. Please guys check first your food carefully and drinks before your eat it or drink it! I give to this place half start.

El Portal. The door to Mexican paradise. The servers are excellent, they always remember us and are so polite. The food: Weekly specials from chicken to salmon topped with exotic spices. Love the cheese and crackers at the wine bar on weekends. Their dessert menu is equally awesome. One of my favorite dishes is the Camarones (Spicy) a la Diabla. Another favorite for dieting phase is their salad.

Pretty regular stuff. It wasn't that great or that bad. I'll probably stick to my other Mexican restaurant picks. The only thing that really bugged me was the lack of checking up on us. We had to wave, twice.

This place used to be great. Lately, it's been pretty bad. Margaritas are ok, nothing special. The guacamole was bland, tacos were dry and tasteless. The location and atmosphere is great, too bad I won't be going back.

I enjoyed El Portal very much. I would rate the food at 4 stars,. The pibil was excellent, as were the other 2 Yucatan specialties I got with my sampler platter - another pork dish and a chicken tamale, which was nicely cooked, not dry, and very flavorful. A friend and I split this platter and a basket of chips with salsa and we were both quite satisfied. Portions were not huge, but they weren't tiny either. Beans and rice were tasty, if not exceptional. Really, for me, it's all about the pibil and they do a nice job with it here. Also, great margaritas! My only complaint was that we went in the afternoon, during a slow time of day, and the service was really slow. Very polite and pleasant, super friendly, but slow - and they were just not that busy. I'll have to go back again and see how the service rates at a different time of day.

Just beat the crowd by 15 mins. The place was empty at 4 but full by 4:30. Food came out fast and hot... Be careful cause the plates are hot enough to burn... It was a little pricey, but worth it. $12 for two asada tacos with beans and rice... Service was good and staff was friendly. Drinks were nice and strong!

  • Josh K.

Oof. Huge portions. They advertise many Yucatan dishes which are good (try the mole.) Chips and salsa are pretty decent. If you order the mole enchiladas be sure not to eat the whole thing. You'll regret it! Otherwise, it's a pretty solid, if generic, Mexican restaurant.

I have been going to El Portal for many years. Great venue and great food!! I wish they had a larger bar area to go and watch games. For dinner, I would recommend their La Fuente appetizer. Awesome and actually, might fill you up unless you have more than a few people eating with you. Love the Yucatan flair here and service has always been good to me. Not sure why a few others here say otherwise.

  • Kyle J.

Been here three times, lets do this: As soon as you come in, you feel the warmth of the staff. I'm always greated cordially, and if it isn't too busy, they'll come around and talk to you about the food and how you came across their restaurant which is literally located in a small portal but also probably implies a portal to Northern Mexico. Out of the 7 dishes i've tasted, only one was subpar - over cooked porkchop. I would avoid that, but it was just a special so not a menu mainstay. :( The rest of the meals - including a surprisingly amazing veggie omelette- were exemplary. The chimichanga and the Mexican trio or tour were my other favorites. Let's not forget they have live music on the weekends who offer to sing right at your table - an old-school and romantic touch I think. They have a decent selection of Margaritas and tequilas as well. Generally, I've been pretty impressed with their inventive and often seasonal specials - especially their pumpkin items in the Fall. So this is a great restaurant in Pasadena - good service, nice ambiance, and quality food for a good value.

Ate there for a coworker's bday.. Hands down the best lunch I've had around the Pasadena Area to date. That special they had was an amazing piece of steak carne asada. Yum! Can't wait to try other items.

Decent Mexican food at a good price. Yes, as the other reviewers said, the service can be spotty at times, but I'm usually not in a rush. Ordered Margaritas there a few times and they were kind of weak. We complained once to the waiter and he brought us new ones with 2 shots of Tequila. The lunch specials are good and you can't go wrong with the unlimited chips and salsa. Tip: If you like things spicy, then ask for the "hot" salsa with your chips and food.

We went here for Mother's Day, to celebrate my mom's special day and since she loves margaritas, I did some research a la yelp... and off we went. We had reservations and sat outside, at first I was turned off by this, but later on as the evening started to unfold, I was glad that we were seated outside.. The food was standard, but the service was excellent. I remember everyone saying margaritas were good and I enjoyed the atmosphere. The seating is in an office courtyard for some odd reason seemed to have fit just right... I really thought it was very cute. Mariachi band added a nice touch, but my parents are not fans. Hubby and I adore the trumpets and guitar serenades... it was so lovely. Will come back!

This place is really cute. It's tucked away in the Arcade Lane area of Green Street and has so much charm, I can hardly stand it. We sat outside because the weather was so gorgeous today, we had great, prompt, but not overbearing, service, good food at a great price. They have a lot of well priced combinations. My tacos did have a little too much lettuce for my liking, but the food was fresh, and very tasty.

We went to a matinee at the Pasadena Playhouse, and after a couple hours of intense theatering we were ready for some food. We walked over to the next block and found arcade lane with many different restaurants and shops we chose El Portal and weren't disappointed. We were greeted by the manager with a big smile and the friendliness continued from there, our waiter was attentive, helpful, and funny. We ordered mango margaritas, they were tasty, and the chips and salsa were fresh and non stop. I don't eat pork, but wanted to try one of the Yucatan dishes, so our waiter suggested the Enchiladas De Mole. He was so right, the mole sauce was rich and flavourful, the chicken was moist, and the beans delicious. My dining companion had one of the house classics, Cochinita Pibil which is achiote-marinated pork, steamed in a banana leaf, she said it was delicious. She was so impressed by the atmosphere and food that she is thinking of having her birthday party here next month.

I will say that it's 3.5 stars. A couple things, I'm on a slow carb diet and they definitely accommodated me. I had their shrimp and crab enchilada without the tortilla. I asked for beans instead of rice and salad on the side. What the waiter didn't tell me was that they had corn, and I just had to pick it all out. Overall, I enjoyed the salad and the dressing. The enchilada and black beans were very salty. I felt way thirsty by the time I was done. The waiter did not come back to refill my water... sad. We sat outside, in the patio area, it was nice. They have parking space, so you don't have to worry about street parking and they validate for an hour. After that you have to pay. It was a little hard to find, it's right on the corner, so when you're going down green st, just turn into the lot that you see. I may be back to try some other things, who knows.

This place never disappoints us. The food is great, delicious chips n salsa flow freely, margaritas hit the spot and the service is excellent. I have tried several dishes here and I enjoy them all - Yucatan sampler platter, enchiladas, flautas etc. The outside eating area has a great atmosphere - booths or tables, heat lamps in a nice little brick walk way. We love going here before the movies, which is right across the street. One time we stayed after dinner and hung out in the bar area and had an irish coffee - which was SO good :) If you want to drink here it gets a little expensive. But it's a nice place, what do you expect? I deducted a star because there was one item I tried that I didn't especially like - the tamale. It seemed a little rubbery or noodle-like. The outside wasn't like cornmeal, like how they are when they are homemade. All in all - a good dining experience!

Busy place. But there's a good reason for all the action. Really good food with a fun atmosphere. Oh, and an additional plus, lots of outside tables, so bailey (my Yellow lab) gets to enjoy it too. Good guac. Give it a try.

We were headed home from Knott's Berry Farm and googled 'best Mexican restaurants in Old Town Pasadena'. We found El Portal on the list and decided to try it for the first time. We were surprised by the excellent food that looks and tastes like it is freshly prepared. The chips and salsa were fresh and very tasty. The margaritas and service were great. When we were thinking of eating Mexican food for lunch, this place hit the spot and then some. If it was closer to home, I would eat here often. Thank you for the great overall experience. We have already told friends about your restaurant and can't wait to go back. Bueno suerte, mi amigos!

I hadn't been to El portal is some time. I had dinner here tonight and it was pleasantly surprised. Everyone seems to rave about the cochinita pibil. I knew I wanted to try this dish but also something else. The yucatan trio seemed to fit my mood tonight it comes with cochinita pibil, a tamale and poc -chuc. Everyone raves about the cohinita pibil and it is very good, I would say this is probably the signature dish at El portal. I'm partial to homemade tamales so I found the tamales here to be fair however the poc-chuc I had never had. I thought it was great it's a thin slice of grilled pork served with chutney. The side dishes are rice and black bean soup. The black bean soup was light and flavorful. The rice was ok. The cochinita pibil lived up to its name and the poc-chuc was a nice surprise along with the black bean soup. If you come for dinner here don't come here for the tacos or burritos or something that you can see in just about any Mexican food menu around the city. Try something different something you don't usually see on the menu.

I had high hopes for this place, but I was a little underwhelmed. If the prices were a bit better I would probably give this place a 4, but I feel like its too expensive for mexican. We both got fajitas which were huge and pretty good, but they didn't come with sour cream (what kind of fajita comes without sour cream!!!???) and we asked for some. On the bill it showed up as $2.50 for a tiny little side of sour cream.... oh well it was worth the 2.50 I guess. The margaritas were good, semi-strong, but probably not worth the $13. The food is ok, drinks are ok, the only thing that really stands out about this place is the ambiance. I like sitting outside and the mariachis are kinda nice... but I think id rather have a cheaper, more delicious burrito from a truck than blow tons of money for worse mexican food.

  • Monica G.

I had the Grilled Chicken and Avocado salad which I thought was overpriced for the amount of Avocado you get. My friend had the Panuchos which she loved and was filled with two. The ambience is great, especially if you go on a warm day and sit outside. My complaint is the price but I guess you pay for the location.

This was the first time I've seen an all-female mariachi band, which was pretty good except they skipped our table. I had the Poc - Chuc. The meat could've been juicier, and the flavor was not very strong. I enjoyed but it wasn't something I would come back for. The rice was about the same level as an average school cafeteria.

This was my 2nd time here and my wifes first. We went for a family dinner on a Tuesday night and they had no problem seating 7 of us at 7pm. We were cheerfully greeted as we came in and promptly sat. The chips are good but the salsa is very good, flavorfull with a little heat. I had the Yucatan trio, reasonable at 13.99, which was excellent and comes with some really tasty mole sauce. The plate is big and comes with tortillas, this is my favorite but my wife had the asada burrito with verde sauce and she ate the whole burrito with a smile. The kids had the usual quesadilla and bean and cheese burrito but ate all of it. My oldest was raving about the steak quesadilla! The staff was very attentive and nice and the drinks were constantly refilled the margaritas were good, according to my wife, and were reasonable at 7 bucks. We had a great time and we are looking forward to trying other dishs they have to offer. They also have a great outdoor eating area. Good for families and kids The parking is validated for 1 hour, the lot is 1 dollar every 30 min, there is some street parking but that is always a maybe with the area being very busy.

Both times I've caved and eaten the same thing, (Combo with the cheese enchilada and chile relleno). It's hard to mess up a cheese enchilada and it's about the same as any cheese enchilada you're going to get elsewhere. Chile Relleno is good, second time it wasn't as good as the first time I went, a little bready. Chips and salsa are good and come ahead of time. Not a health choice, but really, when is Mexican a health choice? I also had the tortilla soup this past time and it was pretty good. I need to expand beyond the current combination since my coworkers seem to really enjoy it every time we've gone. Maybe I'm just not eating the best items on the menu. I wouldn't take a friend there but I'm satisfied going with coworkers during the week.

The service is top notch. El portal showcases contemporary pieces from local artists which has been the long time trend of Pasadena small businesses. Portions hefty and the taste is bursting with flavor. The enchiladas and rice are a fan favorite of mine. The margaritas will swoon you for another fill from their wide array of tequila spirits. The wait staff is prompt and polite. This is all I can ask for in a family restaurant -- El Portal goes above and beyond. El Portal can accomodate a rather large group with outdoor seating and private rooms to personalize your dining experience. Flatscreen TVs will keep you in tune with the other FOOTBALL games (go FIFA!). I judge harsly on the smaller details of my experience by making mental notes of the quality of appetizers. The salsa is fresh and with just right amount of fire to build up a sweat! El Portal is A-OK in my book!

DEAD FLY ON OUR SALSA!! Dont get me wrong, Our 1st visit was fantastic including the service and food. Our 2nd visit, we looked closely at our Salsa bowl and discovered a pair of wings attached to a dead insect.(we did not order this) After showing the waitress, she was quick to snatch it away and switch for a new bowl. As nice as she was, I would have expected some sort of discount or a free meal. No big deal, these things happen but for place that got an A grade, you'd think they would have offered something other than a salsa refill. Probably not going back again. Would not recommend.

Finally finally finally gave El Portal a go. We always see films at the Laemmle across the street, and have eaten a few times at Maison Akira next door and we're craving some mexican food but something different than our usual places. So the missus and I decided to grace El Portal with our awesomeness on a hot and muggy sunday early evening. As it turns out El Portal is a damn tasty joint! Being the first time, I ordered "safe" and got the carne asada burrito which was very good. Large size and no bullshit inside, just meat, beans, good sauce and cheese. I appreciate the side of sour cream they give, nothing like piling on empty calories and fat to make a good burrito better. Their chips/salsa very good as well, and the service was on the ball, always refilling our drinks and chips. Place was good enough to go back to the following weekend to try something different aka exotic (my friend says we're weak for ordering the basics and says their "specialties" are what Portal is about) but they were having some private party so it was closed to the public. Bastards!!!

Although I am not sure exactly what "authentic" mexican cuisine is.. the food at El Portal is great! Not too salty.. not too greasy.. and their margaritas are awesome! I don't like writing negative comments about other people's review.. I just have to say.. if you think the food is bland... maybe you're just eating very salty food? Salt does not necessarily make a dish better.. It's easier to salt a food than to make a food more bland when served... so next time.. just reach for the table salt or Tapatio. El Portal is a wonderful restaurant with great food. I won't say great mexican food, just because I feel I have no right to say what good mexican food is.. But the dishes were great! Their margaritas are very great. I had the Strawberry Margarita, which was great. The Mango Margarita was okay, but not the best. If you are getting a margarita (or two ;) ) I say get the House Margarita, or Strawberry. I had their combo plate #13 which was the Chile Relleno, Taco & Enchilada, and all three were great! The relleno was especially great. I have to say... I don't know what makes Enchilada special or unique... as with this one was pretty much like other enchiladas.. but I still love them! The other dish I tried was the Yucatan Trio. This is very delightful. With the trio, you can taste three of the yucatan specials: Poc-chuc (sliced grilled pork with chutney), yucatan style chicken tamale, and Cochinita Pibil (shredded pork marinated in spice and lime juice) It also comes with a side of picked onions which were great, Spanish rice (which had corn and green peas which was odd because it reminded me of fried rice) and black bean soup. The tamale was good but not the best I have had. However, I don't think it was a bad tamale. I don't know what made it yucatan style, but whatever it was.. I couldn't taste the difference between that and a normal tamale. Nothing was too salty, and the portions were great. I couldn't finish mine and had the left over for lunch. The Cochinita Pibil was great, not a dish I would get to try too often. It was full of flavor and spice, and the meat was tender. Overall, the food was decent quality. Nothing was terrible, but nothing was astonishingly amazing either. However, the overall atmosphere adds to the experience, which was great. I would say this is a safe place to have a group outing (that is if everyone likes latin food to some extent). Nothing too extreme or eccentric (like chicharrones).. most of the dishes should be recognizable by many people. The food is definitely prepared for the liking of the majority of people.

We have been here a few times and really enjoyed this place, it is in a great location in old Pasadena close to lots of shopping and Vromans Bookstore. This place has the best Carne Asada Burrito's. Everything I have tried has been really good so I suspect most of the menu probably follows suit. The prices are not bad for the area it is located in and the wait staff are always really pleasant and helpful. Good selection of differing items and drinks.

El Portal has become a ritual for me. Everytime I go to my dentist appointment nearby, I stop by El Portal right after. El Portal doesn't blow me away, but it is definitely solid. The dishes do not have that generic "El Torito" taste, the service is friendly, and the salsa is spicy but not overpowering. I wouldn't make the trek out from West L.A. (where I live) to Pasadena specifically for it, but I would not hesitate to recommend El Portal to anyone who happens to be in the area. 3 solid stars for El Portal.

Poor customer service! Was trying to host a small gathering for Sunday in their Maya room and management was not at all helpful with booking the event! First spoke with Luis over the phone; when I came by to the restaurant to speak with him, he was gone. (fine! It was 30 mins before closing). Oh and the guy that night, with limited English, was sooooo clueless. So I decided to give them another try by going the next day during my lunch to speak to a manager. When my coworker and I arrived, one of the owners greeted us ( father, I believe) and told him about the party and that I spoke with Luis. He said to sit down, gave us a copy of event prices and said to have our lunch first and he'll have someone speak with us about prices, but not Luis since he's doing payroll. So we sat down, ordered our overpriced albondigas soup, and reviewed their event prices. The soup was ok. They didn't give a side of rice or condiments that normally go with this soup. I've had better versions from Mexican households. Anyways, 40 minutes passed and we finished our meal and still no owner to speak with us yet. So I went to the front again and spoke to the same clueless host from the night before, then finally Armando (the son) came and "quickly" summarized what the prices would be for my party. I mean they weren't rude or anything; it's just they didn't treat us like we were important and our little party was minuscule compared to what they normally host. But I am still a prospective customer and I would've liked to have had more attentive service from the owners! They put out this high class front with their overpriced mediocre food but their customer service does not compare to a run down taco truck. Sorry El Portal. I've could've given you plenty of business.

While visiting on the East Coast I met a handful of new friends who were transplants originally from the West Coast. Hours of casual conversation always winds up around food, the meals they love about the east coast and what they miss about the west coast. In response to what they miss has been consistently the same: good traditional Mexican. In California we are fortunate enough to have a wide variety of traditional Mexican, South American and regional Mexican food. Like the old reliable friend that you can always count on to be there to throw some color into a long, boring evening, El Portal is a great Yucatan restaurant that I love going to or introducing friends to when you are looking for some hearty Mexican. My go to dish is the Enchiladas de Mole, but their Flat Spinach and Shrimp Enchilada is excellent as well. A co-worker friend of mine always gets the carne asada fajitas and it smells fantastic when it comes out of the kitchen, sizzling hot. The seasonal pumpkin soup is a must have when its available during the fall. The service has always been courteous and friendly, and I've never had a problem getting more salsa and chips or asking for anything else I needed. I've even gone here to a Mother's Day brunch a few years ago and although busy the food was still consistently good and the service excellent. I brought my friend from Boston here last week and she was very satisfied with her meal.

Let me just say! OMG delicious! I ate the panuchos dish and they were simply to die for.. My parents are from Yucatan and yes All I got to say that they are authentic. My friend tried the cochinita pibil and said it was delicious. The chips and salsa are very good too. Great atmosphere! Everyone is soo friendly.. Bartender and waitress were great!! Service was excellent!

The servers seem annoyed and the service is horrible. The food is so-so, definitely not worth being mistreated by the waitstaff. I would only recommend the Margarita's at the bar.

We've eaten here at least 2-3 dozen times. We've even brought my parents here. The food is usually good and the service is usually average. Unfortunately, today, the service was deplorable, and my boyfriend urged me to write a review, so here I am. After we ate my boyfriend immediately had to use the restroom, so he left the table. The bill was brought to the table and I waited for my BF playing games on my phone and checking my email until he returned. He placed his card on the check and we waited for quite a while. No one came to pick up the check or his card so, he took it to the front desk and gave it to someone. I am disabled and it's difficult for me to stand and/ or walk so I waited at the table while this was happening. He came to get me from the table and told me he had to use the restroom again. He hadn't eaten all day, so whatever he ate at El Portal just didn't agree with him. I asked him if he signed the bill and he told me yes as he ran to the restroom. (Hindsight is 20/20 - when I asked him later why he told me he had signed the bill, he said he didn't realize he had told me that because he was in such a rush to get back to the restroom. I would not have tried to leave if I had known that he hadn't signed the bill yet.) I slowly walked to the car, which was parked in the handicap space right in the front of their patio. But as I walked the waitress stopped me and declared that I hadn't paid, in front of all the other customers sitting on the patio. I told her that my boyfriend told me he paid the bill and she said he hadn't. So I said, "Ok, I'll wait here." And I sat down at the nearest patio table chair. It would have been much too difficult for me to follow her into the restaurant and sit at the table we had eaten at inside after walking all the way to the patio. I had the feeling she wanted me to come with her inside, but I can't walk back and forth like that. I waited for a short while and she brought me the bill, his credit card and the credit receipt on their little card holder. I exclaimed, "Oh, he *has* paid the bill. Great!" And I started to exit again. But a man stopped me and declared loudly in an intimidating manner, "Ma'am, you have not paid and you need to pay before you leave." He was standing inches from me between me and the parking lot - as if to stop me from leaving. I'm disabled! I couldn't have outrun him if he had been 20 feet behind me! Actually, if he had touched me at all, which he did not, I would have probably fallen to the ground - that's unfortunately how weak I am. But because I am so weak I feel very vulnerable and I really didn't like his demeanor - he scared me. The waitress demanded that I sign the bill. I said, "I can't sign for someone else's card. He is in the bathroom and as soon as he gets out, he will sign for it. I'm disabled and I can't walk back and forth. I will just wait here until he has signed the bill." I thought she had brought it to me to show me it was, in fact, paid. They said, "Oh, you are disabled" and "Oh, he is in the bathroom", "We didn't know." And they took the bill back inside. How about an apology to me for yelling at me (twice) that I hadn't paid and couldn't leave when you already had a credit card that had been approved after it had been run through the machine? How about remembering who gave you a credit card and not demanding customers sign credit card receipts fraudulently? So, there I sat, at the patio table, very embarrassed and unable to leave. In the hot sun. About ten feet from my car. Sitting in the hot sun is not great for my condition either, by the way. I texted what happened to my BF who was still in the bathroom - for the second time in a 10-20 minute period after eating. Not good. Anyway, after a little while longer my boyfriend finally came out and I asked him if we were allowed to leave and he said we were. I don't know what my BF said to them after he left the bathroom, but I know he is very protective of me, and I know he scolded them for being rude and mean to me since he had given them his credit card to pay for the bill while he went to the restroom. For which they not once apologized to me for at all. I understand that there was a series of miscommunications here, but all of this drama for a $33 bill? How sad - they must be starving broke to go through all of that over two lunches and an order of guacamole. And we've eaten there many times before! They may not have recognized us, but we recognized which of the waitresses and waiters have served us there before. My BF usually tips between 18-25% when we eat out, which has been a lot lately, since I've not been able to cook at all due to my health. He told me he didn't leave them a tip at all for this visit. Miscommunications that are handled so poorly are very draining for me. We will not be returning to El Portal.

I'm from Texas y'all, so I'm used to Tex-Mex. I will say I liked this restaurant far better than any others I've eaten at in CA. I still giggle at the size of the chip bowl. It's so tiny. I also find it amusing that Californians do not know what queso is, or at least the places I've asked for it haven't. The frozen margarita here is a joke. It's so frothy and doesn't have much of a taste. I appreciated the grapes when I ordered a glass of wine, so that sort of made up for the lacking margarita. The carnitas tacos were tasty. And our waiter was great. I'm glad my friends are pretty much regulars here and look forward to going back.

In California, there are Mexican restaurants everywhere. However, finding one that is above average is quite the challenge for those who truly love great Mexican food. This afternoon, we visited El Portal for the first time. And, it won't be the last! The parking for El Portal is a small, private lot. 60 mins free with validation and $1 each half hour or hour (didn't pay close attention) after. I think that at night, when Old Town Pasadena is packed, parking could be a pain in the ass. However, Sunday afternoon was a breeze for us. El Portal has two seating areas; outside along the building or inside. It was a bit warm, so we opted for indoor seats. The wait staff was very friendly and we were seated in a quiet, quaint room/booth. The decor is really cozy and the music background level perfect volume. Our waiter was prompt and brought us chips and salsa right away as he greeted us. The chips and salsa were very good - always an indication of food quality to come. We both ordered chimichangas; beef and chicken. The dinners came very quickly - in less than 10 minutes and our server took great care in placing them in front of us. The chimichangas were really big; and the plates were also filled with rice and really good beans/cheese. The meal was delicious, and our drinks never empty - I HATE having to ask for refills. Never once did our server let our glasses run dry; HUGE points right there alone. All in all, we ended up paying about $30ish. I left a generous tip and told our waiter how pleased we were. We'll definitely be going back to El Portal. It's about the same as you'd pay at El Torito or Acapulco, but is much, much better in quality. Stoked that we found this place!

SOY YUCATECO! I like El Portal, I like it! However, if it weren't for the atmosphere and the great location I doubt I'd go there for the food. First of all, I can tell when beans are canned, I hate that. Being a Yucateco is hard, there are not many places for us to eat our traditional food so we must result to mediocracy. The food isn't bad but it does not compare to any restaurant in Yucatan, Merida or a home made dish. Its definitely a nice place to take your friends, family members or if you have out of towner's visiting. My girlfriend loves this place, she likes anything with cheese and sour cream, well done! She's a gringa!

My first visit was disappointing. Food was good but the service was the awful. Waitress would ask if we needed anything as she walked passed the table . Never actually stopped to check up on us. No waters were refilled and I was never asked if I wanted another margarita. When she returned the parking ticket, she threw it on table and kept walking .

I love this place. The grilled shrimp tacos are so good, and so are the chips and guac. My kids love the Bistec, steak and enchiladas. Nachos with grilled chicken too are delicious. It is always good, and dependable with nice service. Also try the shrimp salad in the shell. YUM.

The food was mediocer at best. I ordered the Yucatan trio. The Carnitas was a chunk with much fat, the chicken was tough as leather, the black beans had a total of 4 with just liquid. To top it off I was waiting for my ride n the waiter asked me to move to another table. There were a minimum of 6 other tables open. It's only 6 PM. NEVER AGAIN!

I'm guilty! I read all the reviews, good and bad and I still went there. Everyone is right...margarita was so watered down I felt as though I was drinking an unsweetened slushy. I ordered the Yucatan trio which was tasty but COLD. I hate cold food. There are better Mexican restaurants out there. Too bad, I really wanted to like this place :(

My bad for not visiting this little jewel before. Everything was good. I had the Yucatan sampler-yum! and my friend had a steak that was cooked PERFECTLY medium rare. That's a rarity.

I love El Portal, and come here often. I originally started supporting them because the owner supports a lot of children's charities in the community, including the place where I work, so I came to help give something back. I have never been disappointed. Food: the food is delicious, but since it is of Yucatan variety, dishes I grew up eating often have a slightly different twist than I am used to. It's always been great though, and I enjoy trying the different dishes. I've tried a number of their dishes, including the quesadilla, fajitas, enchiladas, and the chimichangas, which are my favorite. The meals always come out tasty, and I'm never disappointed. The atmosphere is interesting. There are several places where you can be seated. You have the bar, which is right at the entrance, the main dining area, the "back room," outside in the patio, or across the walkway in the overflow area. It can get packed at times, and on Fridays, you get a mariachi band walking around, playing music. I've never made reservations and never have had to wait, but I know that is not true for everyone. The service is excellent, and the owner is often sitting in the area, talking to people. When my parking validation went over e time limit, they have always added extra validation to cover it. They've offered me free bread while I wait, always check in to make sure things are going well, and leave you alone to enjoy your meal. The service they have provided to the community is even greater, and I have seen them make changes and accommodations on the spot to serve kids in the community, which is awesome to see, and is probably the biggest reason why I will continue to come here as much as I do.

I really wanted to love this place, it's local, cute, cozy, and I love old town pasadena. I've been searching high and low for the perfect mexican restaurant in this area. But el portal comes up a bit short, and here's why? Service: 2 stars. Slow and a bit inattentive. The waiter could barely understand english, it was like pulling teeth to get his recommendations. Chips/Salsa: 2 stars. I think chips and salsa is a big deal at mexican restaurants, almost as important as the food they serve. And their salsa is mediocre, refill is SLOW, and you HAVE to ask, we were a party of 6 girls and all the bowls were pretty much empty 50% of the time during our meal. FOOD: 3 stars. The fish tacos were ok, a bit greasy but good size and flavorful. Atmosphere: 5 stars. I think this is my favorite mexican restaurant decor. The space is intimate and cozy, I felt like I was eating at someone's house. Making it a 3 star place. El Portal is the hot girl with no personality. Swoon at first site, a few hours in, you realize you have better conversations with your cats.

Wow! What a lovely place. The restaurant feels like it has been in Pasadena since the 1920's. The decor is very classy, old time-y Spanish. It is definitely a cut above your typical Mexican restaurant. The food is delicious. The menu includes not only typical Mexican restaurant fare as well as Yucatan cuisine, but inventive twists combining Mexican elements with other, unexpected ingredients. For instance, my mom had a special consisting of a chile stuffed with ground beef and topped with gorgonzola and pomegranates in a walnut sauce, with steamed veggies and rice on the side. It was so delicious! And low carb too, if you skip the rice. The margaritas were delicious, and large. They also have a nice kids menu. Plus the service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. My only regret is that we have been living nearby for several years, and only now have we discovered this place.

I have no qualms with El Portal. The services is attentive and nice. The bartenders are experienced and make good drinks. The prices are just right and the food is darn good. Their house margies are good and don't leave you with a ringing headache the next day! Bonus! The seafood is cooked just right - no dry halibut or shrimp in this place! A fun spot for a date for sure!

There are a lot of things El Portal gets right. For example, they turn out perfectly light, puffy, delicate chili rellenos. The service is warm, welcoming and timely, in my experience dining there dozens of times. The enchiladas are very good. So are those bowls of salsa that come with the chips. They have a full bar. There's an inviting, quiet outdoor patio with booth and table seating. There is a lot that you'll pay $1 to park in just steps from the restaurant entrance. For those interested, there is a nice small bar with a game on that you can dine in and often a complimentary plate of fruit and cheese. I've had some not-so-good experiences with my efforts to eat meatless meals there. Tonight I tried the huevos mexicano that featured scrambled eggs. My notion of a nicely scrambled egg is moist, fluffy, and yellow. Their delivery is brutally browned on the griddle until dry and chopped up onto your plate, i.e., inedible. I don't think whoever is turning out those graceful chili rellenos is cooking the eggs. The veggie burrito contains steamed cauliflower, carrots, etc. While I like these things in their place, a burrito is not the place. Please, some beans, rice, chilies, guac, etc. I'd love to see some olives make an appearance. Back to what they get right, and while I will keep dining there whilst in Pasadena. Stick with the combination plates. I'll opt for the chili relleno with ranchera sauce next time.

Damn, I was expecting so much more from this place. The restaurant itself is cute, service is efficient and friendly, wine was great but the food...eh. We started out with the nachos which were standard. My entree on the other hand was pretty disappointing. I ordered the steamed fish and the fish itself was....uh, fishy but not in a good way. Not the worst fish I've had but it sure won't have me coming back for seconds. My husband wasn't too happy with this dish either but our friend who ordered the crab meat enchiladas was more than pleased. I wish I could say I'd go back because the service was great but I'd have to skip it.

I'm probably the harshest critic when it comes to Mexican food, what can I say I'm Mexican. If its not as good as mom's cooking its not good, my apologies. But also I'm in kind of a predicament, my good friends treated me to this place which is why I was hesitant to write a bad review. I do have to give my honest opinion. The ambience of this joint is quite classy to be honest, too classy for my taste. I rather hit the greasy taco truck or the hole in the wall spot for some good grub. Due to my dietary restrictions I had ordered a salad. Yes it is unfair for me to rate this place on a salad entree, but it is my duty as a yelper to write. The salad wasn't bad at all, it was pretty good being just pieces of lettuce mixed in with chicken and dressing. I would have preferred a nice carne asada over a tostada but had to settle. Couple of my friends gave it about average rating also, they said the rice and beans were a little plain in taste. So to be fair I'm giving this joint 3 stars only because it was a treat on behave of my good friends.

I'm a long time customer of El Portal. If you're one person having lunch with a book or twenty rowdies celebrating a birthday, this is a good place to go. I would say the Mexican food is middle-of-the-road. It is consistent and predictable. A place where you can take the folks from Nebraska. Parking is on Green Street or in the lot. They do validate but it's for only one hour and the parking attendants seem to have trouble with the math or figuring out if you've been there an hour or what you owe. I have not tried the Yucatan dishes here but may branch out next time. Dining on the patio is good, They have heaters and/or umbrellas so you can get some Vitamin D if you need it. Inside, in the winter, they have a fireplace. It's great on a rainy day...almost like home. The wait staff is attentive and oblidging. What hasn't been mentioned, Once a year they close this place for a week and scrub everything. I have seen tables on the patio, upside down getting their undersides cleaned. Clean works for me.

"Holy Mole Chicken" Really a 3.5 rating, but I'll kick it up because of the hot salsa and de mole. Milady and I had dinner here after catching a film at the nearby Laemmle Playhouse Theater. El Portal has quaint indoor and outdoor dining areas. It was a beautiful June night so we chose to eat outside. The complimentary chips and salsa are average so you should ask for the hot/spicy salsa. So much better. We ordered the Tamales de Yucatan ($12.25) and the Enchiladas de Mole ($12.75). While my gal's Tamales were just average for me, my enchiladas were muy delicious, the mole just the right amount of sweetness, the sesame seeds a nice touch. It's a crave worthy dish and if I do return I would be happy to reorder it. While your local taqueria will probably serve a better overall meal, El Portal has a cozy ambiance and killer mole enchiladas worth coming for.

I Love Love love this place. I found it by accident a little over a year ago ( its hidden off of the main street Colorado... you need to look for it off of Green St) and fell in love. I have been here about 15 times since I found it. Mostly when I would take my office staff to dinner, or out of town staff , we would come here for good Mexican. Even most recently we met a vendor from India, who never had Mexican food... and we took a group of us out to eat... about 15 people. They are ALWAYS accommodating, and ALWAYS allow me to have my favorite waitress... who is always smiling and friendly, and up sells us on everything. My friends always like the Margaritas, and I like the chips and salsa. This place is like a well oiled machine... the waitress takes our order in and a bus boy comes behind to refill our drinks... refill our chips... bring out extra plates... what ever we need. I LOVED their Fish tacos once I discovered them. I can't believe I kept eating their chicken burritos due to my pickiness, and not tried these sooner. To rank my favorites: Fish, Carne Asada, and the Chicken... They have singers that come around to your table, should you be inside and out. They quite an atmosphere on Saturday nights. I often get notices from the email list about tequila tastings, parties, and other events or specials. Try them out. You may like it. They treat you well and you enjoy your experience. I have been here for lunch, weekday dinners, and Saturday nights... always the same great service...

Do yourself a favor and order the classic.. carne asada burrito... and TRY tellin me the carne asada doesn't make you wanna slap yo momma And if you disagree with me.. cuz you butt-hurt on how I word my postings, TELL ME WHERE IN PASADENA HAS BETTER ASADA THAN THIS... seriously i'll love to hear this even the skirt steak salad is bomb, the meat is tender, flavorful, and has rich texture. good service, nice ambience, great food

I've been coming to El Portal since I was a kid. The location is great, very cozy and well decorated atmosphere. The food is really delicious and not too oily. They start off with their chips and salsa which tastes amazing! Their burritos are so tasty, filling, and HUGE. They have some great varieties as well. The other entrees are extremely delicious. El Portal has quite a variety of dishes, so it suits for people who don't like the usual 'Mexican' food. Not sure if they still have the nachos, but when I did try it last, it was one of the best nachos I've had in my life, if not THE best. Great for dates to large groups. The staff/service is always fast and friendly as well! Keep up the great work!

This place is convenient: across the street from the Laemmle movie house and Vroman's bookstore, so after paying five bucks for parking, you can see a film, shop for some books then grab a bite here. The food is bland Mexican, not bad, and actually tasty, but don't expect anything authentic. I had the carne asada tacos, and they were anything but asada. The meat was actually pretty good, I think it was sirloin, but it just didn't have that Mexican oomph, la sabor. But they have Modelo on tap and serve it in these ornate glasses that makes beer drinking an event. The chips and salsa are tasty but nothing noteworthy. Guacamole with the tacos was, I'm guessing, canned. Service was actually pretty good, no complaints. The ambiance is actually a selling point, since the place is off this courtyard and has outside seating. The inside is nice enough with booths and a bar with TV, so overall a dining experience that doesn't push you out of your comfort zone. Pretty much a laid back experience, and it's location by Laemmle's make this a very competitive option, dinner and movie-wise, compared to the Dave and Buster's across from the Santa Anita AMC theater.

Really El Portal you should get 3.5 stars, but due to the live mariachi band and you inviting us to take tequila shots with you as you parade down the street for new years, I decided to round up :-) This Mexican restaurant is pretty awesome but definitely gets packed. It has so many people here, that they even have this awkward extra space that looks like a temporary office type space that they stuck some tables and chairs in so that they can handle overflow. And they even have tables outside which is nice on warmer nights or they have heat lamps too. Either way be sure you go when you can get the live mariachi music! Totally sets the mood! Of course there were margaritas to be had, and these margaritas definitely packed a fiesta in them, which made them worth every penny. Most of the boys ordered their popular regional dish the Cochinita Pibil which is a pork dish marinated in achiote spices, wrapped in banana leaves, and then roasted. Sounds amazing right? Well to be honest I expected there to be much more flavor and taste than it had, but the meat itself was good quality. I got the enchiladas mole and that was pretty darn good mole sauce. There was a visitor with us from Germany and it was his first mole experience ever since he copied my dish in ordering and he also fell in love with that sauce. The rice on the side was just rice and the beans were pretty good. But they are big portions for average mexican prices, everyone speaks Spanish, they will bring you more hot sauce and jalapenos when you ask for it, and of course after some of their margaritas you will be singing along with those mariachis!

After reading the glowing reviews we decided to take an out of state visitor here for dinner. Charming ambience, extensive well priced menu, seated immediately everything was going great. We put in our order and enjoyed catching up while waiting for some of the delicious food that we saw coming through the door right by us. After half an hour with no food or check in from our waiter I got up to find the manager, he assured us he would look into it and take care of it. Almost a full fifteen minutes later with no one coming by our table our food was finally delivered, and it was lukewarm. Obviously the food had been sitting somewhere for some time. One of our party sent it back (we other two are like starved hyenas, tasty for what it was) and got a plate devoid of all garnish with exactly what she had ordered nuked and slapped back down on the plate including missing bite. This was truly one of the most dissapointing dinners I have ever had. When he came by to ask how everything was, I told him as much and that it was also the worst service we had ever encountered and he was welcome to tell his manager that. The Waiter said the kitchen had been slammed and it was really busy and I pointed out to him that that was not our fault or problem and everyone else had gotten their food in good time. After an additional ten minutes he brought a bill making sure to let us know the manager had comped one of the meals. The manager showed up a minute later to apologize and ask us to give them another chance. Ummmm NO. The chance to make it right had come when I had to get up and go find you to ask about our meal. If you read my other reviews you will find that I am generally a happy camper and this is out of the norm for me. Poor service, poor food quality, poor management equals bad review and no further business.

Excellent Margaritas and fantastic Yucatan food! The staff is always friendly and the location's charm can't be beat. #mexicanfood

I don't rate restaurants often. And, I cannot rate the quality and taste of the food because my aunt did not want to wait an hour to place an order. We sat at the bar, ordered two margaritas and a full hour passed without any check in from the staff. Luckily her and I were catching up so the hour passed quickly but I did notice the staff members were greeting and accommodating other customers at the bar. For such horrible service I will not attend this restaurant again. Margaritas were nothing to scream about anyways.

I found a new place I can call home! The food was good, the drinks were even better! Me and some friends went out to dinner. We like places we can relax and be ourselves without any pressure to "get out of the restaurant, we got people to seat!" The recommended El Portal since they had been there before. El Portal was very relaxing and the service was friendly, fun and no pressure. Our waiter really made is feel welcome and at home. He was funny and down to earth. Great sense of humor. The shrimp stuffed Chili relleno was AMAZING!! I can't wait to go back and sit in the patio this tine, I recommend El Portal highly!

I think this would actually be a 3.5, but I'll always give the benefit of the doubt, especially since there are very few places that feature the food of Southern Mexico. In this case, they have section devoted to the Yucatan. Went here on a Saturday night and, unfortunately, I had already eaten. However, my wife hadn't and ordered the Cochinita Pibil. Now, when she likes something from a Mexican restaurant, thats saying something! From what I tried, the pork was very tender, if a bit greasy. I did order the fresh guacamole, which was o.k.. The atmosphere was nice. We were seated right away, got our food and drinks quickly and were even serenaded by a couple. The margarita was good and my negro modelo came in a really cool looking glass (o.k. so I'm impressed easily). In any case, I'll definitely be back to update my listing...

After discussing with a coworker how El Portal was voted the #1 Mexican restaurant by the Pasadena News, decided to dine here for dinner last night. The only other Mexican restaurant we can compare this to within the Pasadena area, is El Cholo which is a very mediocre restaurant. We first attempted to dine at El Portal on Presidents day only to find out that they were closed. The restaurant was fairly busy on a Saturday and was seated in the back room. The waiter quickly brought over chips and salsa along with our drinks. I personally didn't think that the salsa was all that bad as some have mentioned but then again I don't handle spicy all that well. Decided to order a carne asada burrito (minus beans) yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… . The burrito was decent but carne asada burritos at the small shops down in SD take the win. Only complaint I had with the burrito was although the plate was hot, the burrito was luke warm. Flavor of the carne asada was ok but nothing to rave about.

We ate outside, service was good and our waiter attentive. Chips and salsa were average, nothing about the salsa blew me away. I ordered an Enchilada Camarones (sp? shrimp enchilada). The shrimp was decent and the enchilada was pretty good.. but for $18.50 it was nothing to write home about. It wasn't much better than fast food Rubios and 3 times the price.. I guess you're paying for atmosphere. Food wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me away or memorable. My friend ordered the special, and that looked better than what I had.. maybe I ordered something rather bland from the menu. I was expecting a little more... maybe my taste buds are getting used to spicier food, and this restaurant was more 'Americanized' and catered to the bland crowd... didn't seem overly authentic Yucatan style..but again never been to Yucatan..

I would give El Portal three starts if I hadn't discovered their homemade hot salsa. After two rounds of their chunky yet punchless red salsa, I could bear no more. Heat, please! I asked for hot sauce, fully expecting a bottle of Tapatio, which I was more than fine with - just give me some kick! The brown hot salsa they brought out instead turned a mediocre culinary experience into a good one. I ordered the chicken fajitas, which tasted fine, but even better with the super salsa. There was more than enough left over for a second meal. My wife ordered the cochinita pibil, which was good, but not as good as Loteria's. The ambience is nice, and the margaritas big. Seems like a fun place to bring my in-laws next time they're in town. I hear they have a green salsa as well. I'll have to try that next time.

For those of you that follow my reviews you know I'm ALL about street food and supporting small Mom & Pop type places, El Portal hardly fits in these categories but IS one of the very few restaurants that I go to on a fairly regular basis, generally on a Friday evening listening to the Mariachi Trio * (make reservations if you want to come listen to Mariachi's it gets packed). As with most Mexican Restaurants when seated they bring out chips and salsa (pico de gallo), IF you like good salsa?, do yourself a favor and ask for the HOT salsa yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… it's off the hook good!, the wife ordered Enchiladas de Mole and I ordered the Cochinita Pibil. Enchiladas de Mole - yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… Two chicken enchiladas covered in mole then topped with sour cream and toasted sesame seeds, with sides of Rice and Black Beans. The mole had good flavor and enchiladas had a nice amount of white meat chicken yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… , the black beans were very flavorful, the rice....well I'm not much into rice so I didn't even touch it. Cochinita Pibil - yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… This dish is a specialty from the Yucatan and made with tender pork that is marinated with achote and other spices, some lime juice then wrapped in banana leaves and slow roasted for hours yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… , comes with pickled onions, rice, black beans and corn tortillas. The cochinita pibil was very good, full of flavor while not the best I've had, it's pretty damn good. Black beans are fantastic loaded with flavor yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… , rice.....well I passed, now the corn tortillas are not very impressing, NOT even the best packaged tortillas I've had, one of them was actually falling apart, for a nicer restaurant and the prices $$ you charge for the dishes how about some hand made tortillas!?? 4-Stars

Food is good. Nice guacamole. NIce variety plus a children's menu that makes sense. Now they serve dessert from their cafe across the way but as I recall is was very small. Too small to share almost. One thing to be aware of - they will ask you large or small margarita without letting you know that a large margarita (at least the skinny one) is $16.00. It was NOT worth that price and not kind of them to not disclose that. very underhanded. Service is s l ooooooo w. They need more servers. I'll go back though since the food is good and overall better than Mijares.

It was raining all day and I was in the mood for Mexican food so I decided to stay/support my local neighborhood restaurant. We had dinner at about 9pm and the place was buzzing, but not busy enough where we had to wait. We were seated right away and was immediately served with warm chips & salsa. I had been here before and I've always enjoyed my dining experience. Lets talk about food: I love carnitas so I ordered my usual carnitas plate which was tender and juicy. The mango margarita ( chica size ) was about average and I drank all of it. The home made flan wasn't great but I finished it anyway 'cause I was having a sweet tooth. On the otherhand, my hubby ordered one carne asada burrito, two cheese enchiladas with green chile verde and two shredded beef tacos; served on a platter. He cleaned his plate along with the grande house margarita....so he gives the food 3.5 stars. Our server was helpful, efficient and the chips and nachos were quickly replenished. The night was also entertained by a trio of mariachi music, and somewhere in the night they sang Yesterday by the Beatles...random right? Overall, I would rate the food, service and entertainment 3.5.

The pitcher of the Cadillac Margarita that I shared with my cousin got me tipsy as hell and was pretty tasty. Service was sloooooow, and server was annoying. I had the chicken taquitos with rice and beans, pretty standard, very boring, and way overpriced for average mexican food. I would come back for drinks and to sit on the beautiful outdoor patio. Ole' !

Visited El Portal last night and met Abel the owner who gives up his parking space for an old friend of mine. We had a great time and the food was perfect. Bringing my brother-in-law from Germany next. See you Abel, can I have your parking space for that night?

My mom and I met up here for lunch over the weekend, and lets just say its pretty tasty!!! My mom and I both ordered the Carne Asada Burritos and they were really good. (picture attached)Their carne asada burritos had a lot of meat and were the perfect size!! We also had the homemade flan which was really good, and had a lot of cinnamon flavor. mmmm The only sucky part is the parking. They only validate an hour of parking after that its $1 for every half hour. But other than that everyone is very friendly and the food is good!

My wife and I were preparing for our wedding and put the rehearsal dinner plans off until we knew if we were going to be able to afford it. When my dad finally offered to pay for it (!) we scrambled to find a place that was affordable for my midwestern father and acceptable for our guests' west coast taste buds. We had our wedding and the rehearsal at the Pasadena Playhouse and we were looking for something close by for our dinner. We stopped by El Portal to check it out after calling around to every restaurant in Pasadena that we thought might work. Most of them were not interested in hosting a private party on a Saturday night and made it painfully obvious. El Portal said they would try to accommodate us so we stopped by for dinner, lured by the promise of free cheese during happy hour at the bar. We met with Abel, the owner, who was very helpful and said it would not be a problem to host a private party for us with little more than a weeks notice on a pretty severe budget. We had the fajitas and the pumpkin soup (OMG! YUM!) for dinner to make sure the food was good and we loved it. We booked the dinner there with $100 deposit. For the dinner, we were in the private cafe across from the bar, and they served fajitas, cheese enchiladas, rice and beans, and mexican salad, as well as chips and salsa and margaritas for all of our guests. We had a great time and our thirty guests loved it. Many of them from out of town thanked us for the great Mexican food that they can't get back home. The food and the ambiance were fantastic, and we especially enjoyed being serenaded by the musicians. And my father was happy with the final price - less than a thousand dollars for the whole thing. At the end of the dinner, the owner stopped to make sure we were happy with everything, and even offered to help us with our wedding ceremony in case we got rained out at the Playhouse (we didn't). Wonderful people and wonderful food and we will be customers for life. Thanks to Abel and the whole staff for making our rehearsal dinner a success and such a great memory!

Woohoo!! Margaritas, delicious food, and a great atmosphere= success. The salsa was addicting the veggie tostada with veggie beans was huge and fresh tasting (big plus) and the margaritas but a big smile on my face. The crowd was very mixed and made it feel comfortable for everyone.

We sat outside in the shade of the arcade area and a slight breeze kept the temperature perfect throughout lunch. I enjoy having trouble selecting a menu item because it means it's definitely worth another trip to try something else. Our waitress, Beatrice, was exceptionally helpful and went way beyond the call of duty to ensure we were happy with our meals. They serve passion fruit iced tea but she went to some magic place to find/brew some regular iced tea for my husband. And I asked for heavy (manufacturing) cream for my coffee which she was able to find in their kitchen. (The coffee had a nice flavor, better than many restaurants.) We both tried a different shrimp dish and agreed they were delicious. I ordered the seafood (shrimp, scallop, talapia) fajita plate and when I stirred some sour cream into the sauce I couldn't believe how yummy was the result. I'd been a little put off by some mixed reviews I had read but, honestly, this was a comfortable place to have Sunday lunch, reasonable prices for what we were served, and the outdoor seating was a pleasant surprise. I was also glad we arrived just before noon because it quickly started filling up inside and outside. Overall, definitely a place to put on my regular haunt list.

We ate here on a Friday night with some friends of mine. I was so psyched on the way here because of all the great Yelp reviews about this joint. We sat outside - which I have to admit had a very cool, comfortable atmosphere. It felt like we were at some café near the cobblestone streets of Spain. I ordered the Yucatán Trio, based on the recommendations of our fellow yelpers and the waiter. We munched on some chips and salsa while waiting for our food. Their red salsa was not too bad - had lots of flavors and spices. But I absolutely loved their green salsa! (they do not give this out unless you ask for it separately) Unfortunately for me, from here on out, it just went downhill. We ordered a round of margaritas - which were very strong but had a weird soapy after taste. Maybe they forgot to rinse the soap out of the glasses? Whatever it was I could have sworn I was burping bubbles out of my mouth! When our food finally came out, it smelled great but looked like it was sitting in the oven too long. My meat was completely overdone. The pork was dry and grainy and the chicken was harder than a rock. I actually bent my metal knife trying to cut my chicken! My friends tried to make me send it back - but I was afraid the cooks might do some more nasties on my already nasty food! When I got home, I gave my pit-bull the leftover meat. Two hours later when I was done bombarding my porcelain throne, I found my dog still gnawing away at the chicken meat - as if it was a leather bone! I think they need to rename this restaurant, El Portal DOG TREATS...

I've been here a few times and I've never been disappointed. Most recently on a Monday night - not the popular night LOL I had the chile relleno which was really good - lots of chile, not too much breading and th perfect amount of cheese. My friend had the Albondigas and said it was good - not fantastic but good. The guacamole here is always delicious...oh and the Grande Margaritas - yum. The outside seating is nice on a summer evening if it's not too hot. I'll be back!

What am I missing? That food was nasty. The yucatan trio was tasteless , over cooked and gummy. There was a tiny ramekin of a cold brown liquid on the plate. Maybe beans? I asked and was told it was "soup". My date got the Lobster. It was uncooked. But, the servers were lovely

5 star food 1 star service gives them a 3 star average. Love the outdoor eating area, and the indoor decor. I ordered the Yucatan trio and it was delicious with the exception of my ice cold tamale, but the rest of my food was warm, and the taste was so good, so many delicious flavors on one plate!!! The mole enchiladas, tacos, salmon dish, and app samplers are all pretty tasty as well. The only thing I've ever had here that wasn't 5 star is the black bean soup they give you with some of the dishes, and it's not that it doesn't taste okay it's just that blended up beans don't appeal to me...... The service was way below average, no one ever came to refill our ice teas or water, we had to ask twice, I asked for lemons they never arrived, and we had to ask for a to-go box twice as well as the bill, the bill sat there forever before it was picked up, and the food came out really really slowly. I tried to get several people's attention during our 2 hour visit and that was impossible, it's like they avoid eye contact because they know the service is bad. I really enjoyed my food, and this place is right across the street from the Pasadena Playhouse, and the parking is only $6 and you can leave your vehicle there for the play. This is my 4th or 5th time here over the years and the food is always yummy and reasonably priced but the service is always less than desirable. So I'll keep coming and keep tipping less than 10% when I usually tip no less than 18%. I've read other reviews and they don't seem to care enough to make customer service changes so I'm assuming they're happy with their tips, and since I'm more than happy with their food that makes us a happy and full bunch of people!!

3 stars for the food. Nothing to complain about. Nothing overly impressive. The chips and salsa were okay, and the nachos were good. The green salsa was actually really good and we used it to add flavor to the entrees which were a little on the bland side. Horchata is fantastic here and so is the mojito. I feel that the entrees we had were slightly overpriced. Atmosphere and service was great.

i hate being one of those people who complains about food that isn't "authentic" enough but this place is pretty bad. i had a chili relleno-taco combo plate. the relleno was bad as it was dry and flavorless. the tacos, rice and beans were pretty mediocre. i feel like you can get comparable food for a lot less elsewhere. the chips and salsa are ok and the black bean soup is pretty good as is the ambondigas. i'ts pretty pricey and nothing special, so i probably will not be returning.

My co-worker Keri introduced me to this spot a few weeks ago when we all went out for lunch and it's awesome. We've been back a few times since then and each meal is better than the last. Service is so friendly and impressively attentive. Food is tasty and fast. The restaurant is very accommodating and moderately priced. And I love their little court yard. I'm very much looking forward to my next meal there :)

We arrived here for dinner on our last night in Pasadena and got a great seat in one of their outdoor booths.....a fabulous table.....great spot to people watch and to enjoy the evening weather. Once seated, we were given the usual salsa with chips.......eh...ok. For dinner, I ordered the carne asada......it came with one cheese enchilada, rice, salsa and guacamole.........the carne asada was not the usual thinly sliced flank steak. It was a small 8 ounce sirloin steak.....ok but not great. The enchilada and rice.......again ok...nothing special. For desert, we had the flan...........caramel flavored....very sweet.....very average. Overall, an average meal with a great table........!

I was waiting on giving them my review, until I was sure I was completely done doing busines with them because for a while this 5 star was bordering on a 1 star due to some drama that arose.... but alas, they came through and earned my 5 star review. The food is delicious, their drinks are fairly inexpensive and delicious, and the staff is super friendly, smiley and ready to help. We had a fantastic experience.. my only complaint is that while trying to have our holiday party there they seem to have poor communication skills re: which days are available... it could have turned into a horrid experience. There seems to be a lot of "he said she said" issues here when booking for big parties, so watch out for yourself and keep detailed records of conversations and a paper trail. Aside from that.. everything is beautful, amazing, and earns a 5 star review!

I really enjoy El Portal for their margaritas and their atmosphere, which is very homey and comfortable. The food can be anywhere from four star to three star. Typically it's not spectacular, but it's at least consistently good. I do wish their fajita meat was more tender; then I'd order those more often. A few times I've had something that really impressed and that was usually ordered from the specials (so I'll try more of them and update later). I also really like the stuffed poblano peppers that they make at their family-owned restaurant in the same building, Yahaira's, who's menu they so kindly seem to allow patrons to order from. I actually like a few of the dishes at El Cholo better, but El Portal's fun Cheers-like atmosphere, particularly in the bar, keeps me visiting their restaurant more frequently than any other Mexican restaurant.

I ate here for my buddy's birthday and from the dishes I tasted, wasn't blown away. I feel for the price everyone paid, we should have gotten food with more flavor and higher quality. There are other place around this area that are a step up. The drinks were pretty good though, and cheap!

    (3)
  • Fred G.

Sure, it can be kitschy in there, especially when the mariachis are working the crowd. That said, the food is reliably good. When not berating myself with some "I need to lose weight" mantra, it's the beef chimichanga that makes my mouth water. Their margaritas can be a bit heavy on the syrup, so don't drink too many. They're really good about keeping fresh, hot tortilla chips and salsa on your table. Having eaten there many times, the only item I ever remember not being too keen on were the panuchos, which were just too beany for me. Other than that, I've always been most satisfied after my visits to El Portal.

When you've been a regular at a restaurant, you would think that the owner, or at least some of the wait staff would remember who you are. We would probably go there once every other week and pretty much order the same thing. Neither the management staff, nor the wait staff uttered the words, thanks for coming back, or even the basic thank you for being here. After our experience on Cinco de Mayo at the restaurant, I've decided not to return to the restaurant and update my previous review. The one word that summarized our experience at El Portal was PATHETIC. We waited 20 minutes to be seated. Another 20 minutes before someone would deliver a menu to us which was rather disappointment as it was a dismal selection from the regular menu. Another 20 minutes would pass before someone took our drink order and food order. Yes, another 20 minutes passed before our pitcher of top shelf margarita and other beverages would arrive. There was only 1 round of chips and salsa between the drink order and drink delivery. Before we knew it, all the other tables received their food and these tables were seated AFTER we were seated! We waited for yet another endless 20 minutes before our waiter checked upon us to see if we got our food before disappearing into the busy kitchen. Yes, another 20 minutes passed by before our food FINALLY arrived consisting of overcooked fajitas with dried out rice and beans and an order of undercooked flat spinach shrimp fajitas doused with sour cream. Neither one of our entrees appear to be appetizing. Nonetheless, we were hungry so we took a few bites and requested the check. An hour and half for disappointing food, we thought it would take yet another 20 minutes to get the check. Surprisingly, the check came within immediately upon requesting it. What I noticed on the check was two prices for identical item (I ordered a horchata and was apparently charged twice since it doesn't come with refills). When I brought this to the attention to our waiter and requested nicely to speak with a manager about the slowness tonight, she promptly took the check to correct this. A few minutes later, the waiter returned with the corrected check and informed us that the manager removed the questioned horchata and that it was "on the house." Conclusion: An hour and half to get our food and the check was delivered immediately. Some confusion on our bill with two identical items with two different prices. The staff never acknowledge that we are regulars, and the apparent lack of service was enough for me to write this update. I sincerely hope that the management takes some time to review ALL reviews, not just the positive ones but the negative ones as well. Needless to say, we will not be returning anytime soon.

Went here for Christmas dinner with the co-workers. The service was excellent and the menu is surprisingly inexpensive, being that its on Old Town Pasadena. I was having a hard time deciding what to eat because everything sounded delicious. I ended up getting the enchiladas camarones, which were very good. I think it was the most expensive dish on the menu at $19. They must specialize in salsa because the salsa that came with the chips was amazing and the green sauce on the enchiladas even better! Something about it made gave the shrimp this unique flavor that had me devouring both enchiladas in 5 minutes flat!

We visited this restaurant earlier tonight for an engagement dinner for my wife's co-worker. The atmosphere was pleasant and we were seated for the meal. We got some drinks and got chips and salsa. Some of the chips were kinda stale, some were greasy, but most of them were light and crispy. The salsa was good. We were waiting for everyone to arrive, so we chomped on the chips. We asked for more chips and salsa, but it took multiple reminders for them to finally bring it. I don't know if it was because of the big party or what, but I felt the service was not up to par. We finally ordered and the food arrived in a timely manner. We ordered the Maya Salad which came with light chardonnay mustard vinaigrette dressing with a small side of additional dressing which I thought was very thoughtful. It was tasty! The salad had mixed leafy greens along with sweet onion, mango, tomato, caramelized walnut, with gorgonzola cheese. This was topped with char-grilled chicken strips and shrimp. The chicken was slightly over-cooked to the point where it was charred black on some of the pieces. But over-all, everything was brought together to bring a very flavorful taste, and it tasted very good. We also ordered the Milanesa de Pollo. Thin sliced fillets of chicken were lightly breaded and pan fried (I think, might be deep fried - but it was very light, not greasy). The chicken was very tender and was served with spanish rice, black beans with cheese. The seasoning on the breading was just right - flavorful but not over-powering. I would recommend both dishes to anyone, but I'm giving them a 3 star for the service, or lack there of. I would probably return to give them another try, just because we were in a large party. Enjoy, and good eats! =)

The first time trying to use my living social deal here I had a guest with me... I was going to buy us both lunch with it... the waiter said we couldn't use it that day because it was a special day (Dec 31) and they weren't accepting "coupons". The waiter went to get the manager to see if we could use it and the manager states that we have a sign in the window saying we don't take "coupons" today. The whole reason we went there that day was to use the living social deal that we already paid for. I know it says call ahead of time on the deal but I've never had to before anywhere else. The place wasn't busy at all when we were there... in fact the inside was completely empty. Anyway it was just an embarrassing situation for me in front of my guest and angering situation.... we went somewhere else to eat. I was a semi regular at this restaurant, as I work two blocks from it... but after this treatment from the manager I won't be going back. Why offer a living social deal to bring in customers if your just going to treat them badly when you get there? For me it doesn't matter how good the food is if the service is like this.

The service is amazing. We arrived on Friday night without a reservation. They seated us outside within 10 minutes. When a few drops of rain started falling, the staff quickly brought out big umbrellas. Despite the crowd, service was friendly and quick. The food was just ok. I got the fish tacos and the fish was heavily fried, with what tasted like mayonnaise with little else as a sauce.

Chicken in my "vegetarian" tostada even after I politely told the waiter I was vegan and asked for the dish without cheese. I try hard not to be "that" vegan. I understand and accept that the food industry is not set up just for me. But, when I find something on the menu that seems suitable, or "vegetarian", I usually go for it. I want it to be easy for all of us. When I mentioned the chicken and showed the waiter the chewed up piece I spit out on my plate, he apologized and offered me a free flan - a popular (and as recall delicious, but) egg based desert. Margarita was good, but I won't be back.

There was a piece of chicken in the vegetarian tostada. They did nothing but apologize for the slip up other than offer flan to the vegan. Very old school. Can't recommend it.

Stopped in for margies on National Margarita Day (Sat 2/22) and grabbed a couple seats at the bar. Our drinks were perfect! and we watched on as about 3 bartenders ran their show, preparing all of the drinks for the restaurant. What I enjoyed most was their Happy Hour 4 cheese plate at the bar (served Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) this was such a nice touch. Elsewhere you'd pay a good amount of money for a cheese plate for two, here at El Portal it's complimentary! We were out the door for around $15 + tip on a Saturday evening. Unheard off for two drinks pretty much anywhere else. Outdoor patio is always a buzz, inside has great energy as well and the bar and bar area are great too. I'm very much looking forward to returning and trying their food.

It's been two weeks since we went here for lunch and I still cannot bring myself to eating Mexican again! Has to be the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The salsa had an odd flavor, the "large" guacamole we ordered tasted old. The chips were cold and stale. When our food came it was bland and fatty. Much of the meat was so fatty it couldn't be eaten. When we complained to the waiter about one of the dishes not being what we had ordered, he argued with us, before finally taking it back. Overall the food was bad, the service was awful. I couldn't recommend this place to anyone.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I always pick something different on the menu. My favorite dishes are the ones with their grilled chicken. It's never overcooked like some places. The service is great and they have my beer (Miller Lite). The parking is sometimes challenging, but it's worth the short walk.

Probably the best mariachi spot in Pasadena on Friday nights. Great patio ambiance and amazing service. The bartenders are very personable and always willing to show you a great night. They provide validation for an hour which expresses their hospitality. Great for parties, family dinners, dates and great time.

The service was slow..Me and my partner arrived at 5pm didn't get serviced until an hour later..yes it was Cinco de Mayo but why not hire more waiters. We had dinner ,drinks and we paid the Mariachi to play a few songs..After awhile the owner came over to us twice and told us we where here to long for us to move. I didnt see him asking anyone else except me and my partner..I asked why us ? He kept on and on and finally I got upset and ask where do you want us to move. Before I could say anything else He took our drinks and moved us outside in a corner away from the restaurant . I asked what is this is because we are Gay he laughed and walked away. Never again will I ever step into this prejudice establishment again. Being treated like that was beyond anything Ive ever been through my money is green just like everyone else in there.

Had a bad experience yesterday night. Been going to restaurant for over 12 years. Ordered mango margarita Could taste no alcohol I'm allergic to alcohol and usuAlly turn red on my face after a couple sips. I waited to middle of dinner and the manager and waitress did nothing. They sAid u have to complaine when I first get the drink I asked how much they put in for a regular size margarita. They said one shot. It was basically a virgin margAruta. MAnagement said the sweet mango flavor took over so I didn't taste the alcohol.

Love this place. One of the best guacamole places in town. Perfect place to go for lunch on a Saturday or Sunday. I was there today and the atmosphere really can't be beat. Food is great and super consistent.

Margaritas are basically like sweet, sweet delicious lemonade with a KICK. The mole on the chicken fajitas was great! The ambience is not very Mexican, but more trendy. Still, I like the outdoor seating with the lights - felt like xmas.

I had dinner at El Portal for the first time a couple of days ago, and it was really busy on a Tuesday night. It's a very cozy restaurant and not too difficult to find. It's towards the back of a parking lot so you can't see it exactly on Green street. It's right next to Maison Akira. There is private parking: 1 hour free with validation. It's a cozy little restaurant with cute knick knacks everywhere. There is also a bar where you can sit for some drinks. The food was great-- I had the veggie tostada. Prices are very inexpensive and It was a pretty decent sized meal. There were whole steamed vegetables like cauliflower, carrots, and zucchini with cheese and a vinaigrette dressing. I am looking forward to coming back for some margaritas! I'm curious to know if they have happy hour...

If you're looking for a great Mexican restaurant with great ambiance, tasty cocktails and excellent food, you need to check this place out. Definitely one of Pasadena's many hidden gems and hole in the wall places for good authentic Mexican and Yucatan cuisine. I've been here a few times and it never seems to disappoint. Everything fresh, good quality and reasonably priced. With it's charming hacienda style appeal, warm casual atmosphere and serene location, it's a perfect dining destination for any occasion including first dates or romantic dinners for two. Inside the setting is cozy and comfortable with plenty of seating in the bar, main dining room and patio. There outdoor courtyard patio is also ideal place for enjoying margaritas or hammering down some good tequilas, especially during their tequila tasting events. My personal favorite is their Conchinita Pibil which is a Yucatan classic pork dish where the meat is marinated in achiote and steamed in banana leaf. A must try dish - the pork is tender, flavorful and so succulent. Another great dish is their Yucatan style tamales stuffed with chicken and epazote topped with tomato sauce. Unique exquisite flavors and satisfyingly good. Other items that are guaranteed to satisfy your hunger are their carne asada burritos and steak tostada salads which are yummy and equally potent. All served fresh and good portions. As for service, staff is always friendly and helpful. During my recent visit to here, my order took a while to arrive which I usually don't have a tolerance for. However, my server made sure that I had plenty of chips and salsa on hand and refilled my drink regularly. Once my order arrived at my table, I quickly forgot about it cause I was to busy enjoying my delicious meal. Good food overall and can't wait to come back.

Great place, El Portal offers unique choices with low prices. They even offer cactus as a side! Free chips and salsa is always a plus. Ask for the extra hot salsa that they usually don't bring... if you feel daring. Great place to eat if you want to get away from downtown Oldtown Pasadena. It's close enough but tucked away in a unique atmosphere. Eat inside or out, both are great choices. Love everything I've tried on the menu and I've been here many times. Arriba!

  • Chelle P.

Super tasty, great atmosphere. They had both Americanized Mexican food and some dishes I've never tried before. Salsa was fresh and the margaritas were ice cold and delish. For a mid priced and solid Mexican food choice, this was perfect.

The carnitas plate was YUMMY!! Chicken fajitas aren't bad either. Warm chips and flavorful salsa.

We really enjoy coming here. The ambiance and service is pretty good as well as the food and margaritas. I especially enjoy their Yucatan menu selections and eating on their outdoor patio on warmer nights. Probably one of, if not the best, places in Pasadena to take a date out for a quality Mexican dinner.

I ate dinner at El Portal in Pasadena, CA on 5/28/2014. I've been there several times before. This time there were four of us. Two of us had the #2 (two enchiladas) for $11.00 each, another had the pork & chile burrito for $11.75, while I had the #7 (taco & enchilada) for $11.25. Horchata's cost $2.50 (but no free refill) while a small margarita cost $7.25. Everyone was pleased with their food and Omar, our server, did a fine job. El Portal is located along Arcade Lane which helps give it a pleasant distinct feel. We used the valet parking which cost us $2.00 including the validation. Plus, I took photos.

First off, let me start by saying that Liz L. from Santa Clarita, CA you have ZERO understanding of what Mexican food is. Are you kidding me with your "Only place to get better is Mexico and San Diego" comment?! I get you are from Santa Clarita so you may be scared to go to places in East Los, but the food here was just bland!! by the way, saying that you had Mexican food in NY doesn't add to your credibility. It only explains your ridiculous views on what Mexican food should be. The first warning should have been the soup special of clam chowder! I should have walked out after they offered that up. If you are in a pinch and need mexican food around this area go to La Fiesta Grande or El Metate. This place was also expensive!! Maybe they are just taking advantage of the older retired white people that seemed to fill up this place. For a second i thought i was at Carrow's. I gave this place two stars because the service was okay and the ambiance was kinda cool. Although now that i think about it i should have tried eating the table it probably would have been 10x's tastier than the crap they think is Rosarito fish tacos. By the way Liz L, you don't have to go all the way to Rosarito to know what good Rosarito style fish tacos taste like. You just have to go to this place yelp.com/biz/tacos-baja-… . Although it is in East Los, so you probably won't go.

We really like El Portal. Its just a normal Mexican food place that is little nicer than the rest. They do have a small section of the menu with more authentic South America dishes which we liked. Service was always good, they have a cool patio where many people sit.

  • B K.

I will not be coming back. My wife and I were looking for a nice sit-down Mexican place, but this didn't fit the bill. Unfortunately the service is lackluster as being called amigo constantly becomes condescending quickly. If you're ready for an international tour of haphazard fusion foods get ready as their rice is more like Mexican fried rice, and their shredded beef tacos taste more like corned-beef. I'd pass on this place as you get better service and food at a bigger chain restaurant like El Torito. For now I guess I'll have to keep searching for a more authentic sit-down Mexican restaurant because El Portal Yuckytan Mexican Cuisine is not where it's at.

Man. Just don't get all the raves about this place. Your basic gringomex, albeit served in a nice setting(great patio). Popular with families, as it was overrun with tots during our visit. Nothing you can't find in a dozen other pseudo mexican joints in Pasadena. No better - or worse - than Mijares, Margarita Jones, etc.

This is a GREAT restaurant. These guys really know how to run a restaurant. I came in on a busy Friday night and was immediately seated and we got our food in no time at all. It's really incredible. Great food and atmosphere. The best part is its reasonably priced, especially for the quality. If your in the mood for Mexican food. Come to El Portal

I ordered the Tamales de Yucatan at El Portal, and I was mildly disappointed. My food was Luke warm even the rice and beans and getting the waiters attention took awhile. I think this restaurants ratings are mildly over rated, it wasn't the first time eating there, this will be my last.

It's rare that I come across a place that I don't want to share. El Portal has now this distinction. While I can't speak to the food (which looked really good), they have FREE cheese people! At the bar only, from 6pm-close on Friday and Saturday nights -- three, nice wood, cheeseboards are sat onto the bartop, and one just right next to me (how convenient!). The bartenders or fellow patrons pass the platters around as necessary, and seriously, it's a very generous and unique offering. yelp.com/biz_photos/W0Xg… I chitchatted with several of the servers as they came up to the bar for their orders, and everyone seemed so friendly and kind. Brenda, the bartender, has a million dollar smile and so nice!! I'll definitely return for lunch or dinner. Most of the seating is set outside on the pathway between stores, and feels like you are sitting in an old world alley. Or, as I did a couple of days ago, just spend an hour having a brew, some cheese, and watch the Dodgers beat the Cards in the 10th inning with a Matt Kemp 2-run single. In addition, if you happen to be going to the Pasadena Playhouse, you can park and pay once for your evening plans. The restaurant closes early (930pm), so have an early dinner before the show.

This was my second time at this restaurant. The first time, I came by chance, as it's directly across from the Pasadena Playhouse and I needed to eat. The second time, we came by design for the same reason. The first time, the wait was huge! Thus, I UrabnSpooned it and made a reservation. They didn't have my reservation when I arrived, but they weren't busy, so they accomodated me. It took a bit to get service, but the manager came over to apologize, then service was frequent. I chose to sit outside with the heat lamps. They have it decorated beautifully with the trees and lights. The (Yucatan) food is delicious! I'm going to try Asikra, which is right next door, but other than that, this is the best restaurant in the Playhouse neighborhood so far.

It took like 5 minutes to be seated and there was no other people waiting either. And we had to ask the waiter to refill our water. Aside from that, the entrée I ordered was superb. It was 2 crispy chicken tacos combo that were quite tasty. Inside the crisp tacos were tender strips of shredded chicken with fresh cabbage-like lettuce and diced tomatoes resting atop. To sum it up, this is an exceptional Mexican restaurant to eat lunch at in Pasadena.

I absolutely love this place! I have never been disappointed with the food. Everyone is always super friendly and accommodating. I love their outdoor seating area, it has such a great vibe and the mariachi band is out there on weekends.

Solid restaurant with great prices and huge portions. I came here with my husband and some friends and we were happy enough with our meals. We got chips and guac. to start and the guac is very fresh and the chips were tasty--though they could give more so we don't have to keep asking for them. For an entree I got rice and beans with corn tortillas, my husband got one of the meat specials, and my friends got fajitas. We were all satisfied with out meals, but nothing was particularly WOW. We did enjoy the mariachi band playing at different tables, it was very charming. Service was ok, our waiter was slow and not very attentive, but very sweet, and a little frazzled since it was packed. Fun decor and nice outdoor seating! I'd give it a try, and I would go again!

  • E L.

Okay, having to update my review. Came here this weekend and had horrible service. Waiter disappeared for so long without checking on us. No one asked if I wanted a refill on my drink. They're also very stingy with the chips and salsa. There was literally no one in the restaurant so i don't get what happened to our waiter. I could have walked out without paying and no one would have noticed. Also, $4.50 to add a side salad onto my meal? Def not worth the $4.50, so small. Wont be coming back again. I'm done.

Still my favorite Mexican restaurant in Pasadena. Awesome margarita's, great food! It has all the typical mexican dishes you'd expect, but with some awesome Yucatan dishes you wouldn't. Try the cochinita pibil! You wont regret it!

  • Heidi A.

My family and I have been here several times and it has been great each time. The margaritas are good and the food is very tasty. My favorite is the cochinita pibli but the carnitas soft tacos are also good. Very cute décor and family friendly as well. We will continue to keep this in our restaurant rotation.

Really surprised by some of the negative comments below. I have been coming here since I was little and have probably been here over 100 times. The food is ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS on point. Someone complained about a la carte enchiladas...well ive never had that plate but this isnt the place to be if that's what you intend to order. The food here is gourmet, top of the line Yucatan/Mexican cuisine. Try the salmon or the steak and I guarantee you'll be satisfied. To top it off, they own the cafe across the walk way so they offer a pretty large variety of desserts and coffees. They also have a banquet hall where i've had a handful of parties and work events. I could go on, but i'll stop here. Nothing but great things to say about both the food and the service here.

  • Melissa L.

I've been coming here for years & the food/service is always great. This restaurant has interior & exterior seating so it's up to you, we generally sit inside because we find the service to be faster, don't ask me why. The foods pricing is pretty average, a little more expensive but that's simply how it goes in pasadena. The food is worth it though so no harm is dishing out a couple more bucks a plate. I have yet to find anything here that wasn't good. I stick with the basics and get either the albondigas soup or a cheese enchilada when I come. Again though I've tried a little bit off of everyone plates here and there & everything has been tasty. I'd recommend this place for anyone who loves traditional Mexican food but with a slightly more sophisticated dining atmosphere.

  • Kristin K.

Friendly service. In fact, I was personally thanked by our server four times during the meal. They serve chips in the smallest possible bowl and when seated afuera you might wait a while before a water/chip refill. Chips also served with the token unnaturally bright red and green chips thrown in. Ordered the chicken enchiladas with salsa verde and these were pretty good, served with Spanish rice with huge peas and pinto refritos. Mucho queso on top of the enchiladas which is not my favorite.

  • Mike f.

I've eaten here a few times over the years, mostly because of their proximity to Pasadena Playhouse, latest time yesterday. I'd really like to give more stars but, despite earnest, friendly service from a legion of waiters and bus staff who are doing their best, the food simply isn't very good, more mediocre at best, right across the board. I had Carnitas (dry, flavorless) and my wife had Stuffed Chili Rellanos (wet, flavorless)---seriously, even the chips (stale) and salsa (tomato chunks swimming in picante sauce) were marginal, although to be fair, I did sort of like the guacamole, or maybe it simply stood out in comparison to the rest of the meal. Sorry, but now that there are some newer places popping up in the Playhouse vicinity I'm afraid it's "adios" El Portal for me!

So far my favorite mexican food in Pasadena (and I think i've been to them all).. Authentic, great tasting, fair prices, and AMAZING margaritas.. what else you want from a mexican restaurant? I've had a few things, but all the Yucatan inspired items are GREAT!

    (4)
  • rhythmMAN I.

This place is fun. The service there has always been satisfactory at the very least, and each of them are quite friendly and attentive. The food is excellent, an impressive variety of Yucatan cuisine. They also make a killer Cadillac Margarita - get the large one and it's all you'll need!

    (4)
  • Betty L.

Not really a fan... I'm torn about this place because even though I thought the service was great, the food was just meh. Actually, I guess I'm not so torn. Good service never really keeps me coming back to a place that doesn't serve great food. After reading other reviews I made sure to try one of their Yucatan specialties and I was not blown away. I would kind of rank El Portal in the same category as El Torito. Take me to a cheap hole in the wall place over this one any day.

2 enchilada combo & house margarita, very good. The service is personable & nice with the choice of inside or outside seating. TV's @ the bar for the sportsmen in your life. Overall very nice atmosphere.

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while & was pleasantly surprised! The chips were warm & the salsa was really good. My husband & I ordered combo dishes which we both enjoyed. My Hubby cleaned his plate & I ate almost all of mine. We both had a chicken taco in our combo & the chicken was delicious! My only complaint is the margarita was overpriced & weak & my draft beer was not ice cold as it should be. Other than that we will be back again for the food but not the drinks!

  • Carolyn H.

I don't know what the last few reviewers were talking about...I really loved this place. Maybe it depends on what you order...I got the tamales off the "Yucatan Specials" part of the menu, and I thought they were awesome, along with my margarita, which I enjoyed maybe a little too much. The service was also awesome. It was a Friday night, so I had made a reservation (which didn't seem extremely necessary), and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Best of all, though, I really liked the atmosphere here. On a warm night, the patio was very charming, and I enjoyed the live music by the mariachi trio...even though I think they played "Guantanamera" twice in under 20 minutes. Overall, I say: Great date place.

    (4)
  • Katie R.

This place has great food! It is convenient with private parking, and the service is usually attentive and friendly. You can clearly taste and see the Yucatan influences in the menu, and the freshness of the ingredients is outstanding for a mexican restaurant (no two day old looking refried beans!). I would have to add, however, that this place does not have the best margaritas and they are overpriced at that. So go to El Portal for dinner and then hit up a happy hour somewhere else for your tequila fix.

Very comfortable atmosphere. And they have Cochinita Pibil which I always order because of a Johnny Depp movie I saw, in which he orders it.

This place is one of my favorite sit-down mexican restaurants. It's hidden on Green St in a secluded neighborhood so it's very easy to miss. Parking can be bad on a busy night but it's all good. Many familes eat here as well as couples. Like what one user said...where can you find a mexican restaurant with a fireplace? My favorite dish is the "fajitas". It has great flavor and will be sure to fill you up. The margueritas are good but the draft beers are a little lacking. Ever had stale Dos Equis? Prices are good...about 8-13 dollars a person without drink. On a warm night, make sure you opt for the outside seating. Notin' better than relaxing under a warm summer moon eating mexican food with good company!

My mom brought home some leftovers, and being the pig I am, I opened up the box, peered at the treasure inside, and proceeded to devour everything. Mmmnmn. I thought to myself. . .it if tasted this good after a few days, WHAT MUST IT BE LIKE FRESH??? I got my answer after I clamored to mother dearest to take me there as soon as she was free. The day finally came, and it is hidden on Green street in a charming little plaza with a great ambiance to it. I got the seafood fajita with corn tortillas. . .so incredibly delicious. There was just too much food, I had to take the rest home. I'm sure my parents enjoyed what they ordered, but for sure, I think the fajitas are the best here. Mine was overflowing with shrimp, scallops, and sweet bell peppers. It was delicious, and the chips and salsa they serve on the table. . .addicting.

  • Gerard I.

The place is alright, but be warned. Any Mexican restaurant where they serve a "Mexican Pizza" dish should be taken with a grain of salt. That's just me. The burrito's are passable. No big deal. The margaritas are okay. What actually gives it its charm are the mariachi, guitar players that go around serenading customers weekend nights. I dig that. They do take requests as well. That's what I would recommend. Go in Friday-Sun have some tasty beverages, and take in the tunes. I think I'll give it an extra star just for the tunes.

Best Cinco de Mayo ever at this place!!! The service was superb and the staff was so friendly and accomodating to my friends and I. Even their bartenders were so incredibly nice! They had a mariachi band the night we came and they were all very personable - one of the waiters got in the action and danced with our party! (note: if you want to enjoy the mariachi music, make sure to get a table on the outside patio). Now for the food: the Chile Relleno I ordered was absolutely delicious! It was stuffed with ground beef and gorgonzola cheese, on a bed on walnut sauce - wow wow wow wow wow. It was on their special Cinco de Mayo menu, but they seriously need to place it on their regular menu from now on just cause I said so. They even were giving out complimentary jalapeno poppers and mini quesadillas (AND tres leches cake), but I think that might have been a perk to being there on Cinco de Mayo. I also highly recommend their Cadillac margarita (go for it and make it a double!). Everything is very reasonably priced - the double Cadillac margarita was only $11.25 and my incredible meal was $13. Now that I know about this place, places like Chevy's or El Torito will never compare...

My wife and I had lots of "goto" spots for sit-down Mexican in Pasadena over the years, from Margarita's to Nueva Posada to Mijares. But in latter days El Portal was to become my favorite. I remember going there for the first time; it was during the rainy season (for a Seattleite, one of the few bright spots in the LA lifestyle), and El Portal had the perfect antidote to the downpour outside. First, they had a fire going (how many Mexican restaurants have fireplaces?), and second, they had a Pumpkin soup on the menu. Naturally, I had to try it. And boy, did it hit the spot: creamy, spicy, hot and filling. Unfortunately it was a seasonal item and I never was able to catch it again. If only they'd had Yelp Talk in those days. But even on a typical sunny day El Portal won't disappoint; they even have a few tables outside. The icing on the cake is that they specialize in Yucatan dishes (which I've totally been digging since my trip to Belize), so you can break out of your burrito-enchilada-fajita rut and try something new.

This restaurant is a bit hidden off of Green street. It's right behind a Japanese restaurant and is located in an old brick building. One hour free parking in the lot with validation. The ambiance is very nice. Has both indoor and outdoor seating (with plenty of heat lamps on a cold night). The service is very good. The waiters were very attentive and quick. Always had refills of chips and salsa on the table without even asking for it. I ordered the carnitas dish ($12) and my fiance ordered the carne asada dish ($15). I did not enjoy the carnitas at all. The meat was very dry and had hardly any flavor. I ended up eating the beans, rice and some of the guacamole with the tortillas and left the carnitas behind. The beans and rice were okay. Not too much flavor either. And the guacamole was not that good. It almost had a sweet taste to it. I enjoyed the chips and salsa and my horchata the most. My fiance's carned asada dish, on the other hand, was very good. The meat was delicious and the cheese enchilada it came with was very tasty. The margaritas are awesome there. Overall, if I were to go back I would probably order the carne asada dish. Or would just go there to enjoy some of their margaritas.

Had the pleasure or eating lunch there yesterday. Little did I know wednesdays special is a Lobster Quesadilla. Perfect! And what a classic place to enjoy food. I was fortunate to sit with the owner for a few minutes and listen to his great story of how El Portal became what it is today. Later met his son who shares the same positive family trait. Can't wait to go back and test EVERY single tequila behind the bar. I think I counted about 50 or so. There's also a little cafe on the colorado side of the walkway that gives the same family care and quality. bueno

i dont know if yucatan food is suppose to be on the milder side but thats the message that came across. i thought the food was well done but not as spicey as i am use to with mexican food. right next to maison akira.....same parking lot. the courtyard patio here was very cozy.....there's a lot a charm to this place which is tucked away on green street. everyone seem to enjoy the drinks ordered.....from wine to margueritas. and with our drinks we enjoyed the salsa and chips.....almost filled our stomachs on it because the salsa was so good. everything we ordered we shared so got a taste of everything from the tamales, to carne asada, chix picado.... if you like mexican but prefer it on the milder side this would be perfect for you....

I love this place. The food is high-quality Mexican, with a twist. For example, there are some Yucatan-style dishes like Chicken Mole. I also like the fact that the restaurant changes the art on the walls every month featuring a different artist every month. I also appreciate that they take pride in having 96 or so different kinds of tequila. (Seems funny to me: I thought there were only two kinds: with a worm and without...;) The food is consistently good and I love the family-run business ambiance.

The service at this restaurant is slow to say it gently. The host takes forever to acknowledge you and it stays slow all the way to getting your check. The food is ok and resonable priced. They validate for 1 hour and I don't believe you can be served in that timeframe.

I have been frequenting this restaurant for the last 4 years at least once a week and have never had a bad meal. This restaurant was recommended by one of the chefs at the Ritz Carton, Pasadena who moonlights at El Portal. He is the one who creates all the weeks' specials, and as for the price, you cannot find a better deal. These are some of my favorite dishes: Panuchos, Cochinita Pibil, Poc Chuc, Fajitas, Chile Rellenos, and The Chicken Mole Enchiladas. I highly recommended.

Always good! I've never been disappointed by anything here, and the service is quick and friendly. The margaritas are good too.

I like this place much better than El Cholo Mexican restaurant. I've been to quite a few mexican restaurants and I'm not sure how REAL Mexican food is supposed to taste so I may be rating this kind of funny. I've come here a few times and my experience on this restaurant was ok. The food is usually good (they serve the whole gamut of mexican food - tacos burritos to chile relleno). My only complaint about El Portal is the service. Sometimes it takes them forever to get me some water.

"Wow." The little imperfections of any restaurant can be wiped away with that one little word. "Wow." Take a bite of something, chew, and ... "Wow." Understaffed on a Sunday night? "Wow." Wiretapped without a warrant? "Wow." Killed a hobo? "Wow." You're forgiven. Upon a friend's recommendation, I ordered their Yucatan Trio. Had a forkful of the traditional rice and beans. "Not bad. Pretty good." Had a forkful of a chicken taco. "This is pretty good." Had a forkful of some sort of pan-grilled pork. "Wow. WOW." Had a spoonful of some sort of black bean pure (it took me a moment to realize the beans were liquified.) "Huh." Slurp. "Wow, this is really good!" Wrapped rice, beans, and pork in a tortilla, and dipped into the black bean pure. "Ooooh." Gratuitous porno sound effects follow. That was pretty much how the evening went, me making surprised yummy noises every few bites. Good pork doesn't absolve them of all sins (cue the Samuel L. Jackson / Pulp Fiction monologue here: "Pigs are filthy animals ..."), but it was pretty damn good and the meal en toto was certainly in the Above Average category. The service wasn't anything to write about, so I won't. Near every dish is between $7 and $15 per, so it's eminently reasonable for the price-conscious. I didn't have any alcohol, but they supposedly have the best margaritas in Pasadena, so it can't be all bad.

Depending on your order, El Portal is either a miracle or a mystery. Order off the combination portion of the menu and it is a miracle that it is still in business. It not only sells tired, bland burritos and tacos but it also accompanies them with 'me too' salsa, slow service and weak margaritas. Order the pibils or any other especialites of Mexico and it is a mystery that it isn't one of SoCal's famous restaurants. Our table ordered half and half with the pibil eaters mucho happy, fish eaters less so and the burrito and taco eaters wondering why the hell were we eating at El Portal. If you're into adventure the pibils are worth a drive. If you want cheesy burritos et al only go if you are in the neighborhood with nowhere else to eat. Mike

Service was good and fast, but the chips were cold. Salsa was very fresh and I liked the margaritas even though they were on ice, not blended. Five of us had good meals, but no one said it was great.

Seated quickly with or without reservations. The big margs are perfect, as is anything with shrimp. I recommend sitting inside or in the booths along the wall outside. Out on the patio in the middle is not so great for service and you're out in the walkway with no barriers. It feels like everyone's walking all over you on their way to the other shops in the plaza.

First off, the atmosphere isn't bad. Kind of cramped because there was a lot of people and felt like the seats where cramped together. Food - The food wasn't as great as I thought it would be from a mexican restaurant. Maybe because it's Pasadena but the food quality didn't feel like it was authentic. Growing up in a small town near Mexico, eating out of a taco stand off the street tasted more authentic than this place. Granted the burrito's my friends got were big, I ordered a simple egg dish machaca (shredded pork with egg) and they managed to screw that up. The whole plate was basically 75% green bell pepper, 15% egg, and 10% pork. I was like what the *uck.. Not that this is a joke but out of 13 friends that ate, about 5 people did not feel good afterwards. Some had stomach problems, one person got extremely sick from what seemed like food poisoning, and I had a bad stomach ache the next day and had constipated problems. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant for people who are looking for authentic food. If you want authentic - go look elsewhere

Easily some of the best service I've ever received at a restaurant. I waited at the bar for my woman to arrive, and the bar staff was friendly and quick. The host was very cool, had a table with the reserve sign waiting for us, how nice! The chips and salsa were amazing, SALSA SO GOOD! The chips were great, the tortilla soup, holy cow! Finally I got my steak fajitas and I'm in love, anytime I venture this far from the west side I must return here, not even to eat, just to hang out since these dudes are so nice.

Cute, cozy restaurant. They had christmas decorations which made the place festive and inviting. Staff was exceptionally friendly and polite. I enjoyed their tamale and enchilada combo platter. I think it's really cool that they have various combinations, you can mix tacos with enchiladas and/or tamales etc.

This place is absolutely awesome!!! I am definitely coming here again. I came here for the first time for Cinco de Mayo this year, with a big group of people. It was a fun and festive environment. The food was spectacular. I got the El Portal Tostada salad with grilled chicken, black beans, jicama, tomato, avocado, and ceasar dressing - not terribly authentic, but SO GOOD. The jicama really gave the salad a fresh bite, and the tostada shell was pure CRACK. Everybody else at the table seemed to really like their food too. The margaritas are gigante and delish as well! My only complaint was that the service was not terribly attentive. One of my party had to wait a full 5+ minutes for her entree after all the rest of the food arrived, and only after we reminded the staff. I'll let it slide though, because it was quite busy for Cinco de Mayo. El Portal is a little hard to find, since it is set back from the street, basically next door to Maison Akira. There is (free?) parking in the lot in front of the restaurant. And I think the outdoor seating has the best ambiance, so bring a coat or a sweater!

Think YUCATAN! El Portal--located toward the rear of a pretty "arcade" across the street from Vroman's (enter the parking lot from Green)--is a comfortable place, especially in winter when the fire in the fireplace (great place for it) is going. Very cozy. They make a real effort with the art, and the owner has been recognized for this. I even went to a special "Diego Rivera" dinner a few years back, featuring the artist's favorite foods (he had a lot of them) and an outdoors slide show--3 screens!--of his murals. "But I digress..." I've always found the service here to be very acceptable; we usually go for lunch, on the late side. They have all the usual things you can order in a Mexican restaurant, but what sets them apart is the Yucatan section of the menu: Cochinita Pibil (sorry if I spelled it wrong), Panuchos, and several other noteworthy dishes. I only wish they served Pollo Pibil, a longtime favorite at the lost and lamented Merida, a Yucatan restaurant that used to be in what is now Pasadena's "Old Town." (Ha! I can just picture old-timey Pasadenans shopping at Banana Republic, Crate & Barrel, or--best of all--H&M.) So--order from the Yucatan section of the menu, and you'll probably be more than satisfied. (Weirdly, El Portal sometimes advertises in the Star News restaurant supplement (or used to) that they DO serve Pollo Pibil. You can do it, El Portal! PLEASE!!) They also have good albondigas soup. Guacamole--so-so. (No one makes it like I do, though: one of my few major kitchen accomplishments.) And the flan is good too.

I don't know. We came to dinner here recently. The service was friendly, attentive, and fast. (The service deserves five stars. So I feel dirty for what I'm about to write.) Then they brought out the food. It's frustrating when a restaurant takes one of the most soulful cuisines on the planet and turns it into dry, over-garnished hotel food. A half-step above El Torito, and not worth battling the cars in the overcrowded parking lot outside. Too bad.

My wife and I both love Mexican food and El Portal is less than a block away from our apartment. On Friday nights after a tough week we walk over to El Portal quite frequently. We typically dine inside at a booth and find it quite relaxing with a big margarita with some decent warm chips and salsa. The service is always very good, sometimes even too attentive. We usually stick with the basics such as tacos, enchiladas and chili rellenos. The food is good but not the best we've had. Maybe this sounds petty, but their tacos always fall apart. I think I enjoy how convenient and relaxing the atmosphere is and the margaritas more than the food. For Mexican food it is a little pricey especially if your order their expensive drinks. Gave them a 4, even thou they probably deserve more like a 3.5.

Ate here again recently before seeing a play at the Pasadena playhouse and it was good as always. I tried one of their entree salads and I was not disappointed. Its was very flavorful and the portion was very generous. Service has seemed to improved quite a bit, which I was pleased with as it has been an issue in the past. I'll definitely be back.

Authentic Mexican food that is really good... The chips and salsa are a perfect start. Cadillac grande margarita was super tasty. I had the number 13 - enchilada, taco and chile relleno.. I thought everything was great but didn't care much for the chile relleno.

Wow, this place was so underwhelming. I ordered the halibut steak, which was tough and clearly tasted frozen. It came with some dried-out rice, and some bland veggies. My companion got a tamale entree which was among the toughest, most flavorless tamales we've ever tasted. The chips were greasy-tasting and not good. Overall just an extremely disappointing experience, I would not go here again. Like, ever.

Wonderful setting and what old Pasadena used to be like. As for the food, really a nice change of pace from the old and tired Latin / Mexican foods of rice, beans and tacos. I will go back for sure.

Terrible service always, guaranteed... Pricey for the small portions that you get, although the Yucatan pork is delicious. Great when you go out and wish to eat sensibly ( no over-eating here). Ambiance is great, cute patio seating, great for parties whe you are on Hawaii time and don't care about the making it to the movie on time, great Margaritas, and usually there is live music, but call to make sure. Owner is often there and is really a nice guy-- and he is a real Mexican chef himself from Yucatan.

I have been to El Portal maybe 20 times over the past 10 years and it is always good and sometimes exceptional. The atmosphere is supremely warm and gracious. The food is tasty and nicely prepared. Margaritas are double-digit ($10-$12) - I only get one, usually a Cadillac - no-salt, on the rocks - it's a dandy cocktail but I'm no connisseur of drinks. Since it is right across from the Laemmle Theaters and around the corner from the Playhouse Theaters, it is convenient for pre- and post- theatre bites. Last night we ate simply: A chicken quesadilla and a shrimp enchilada with a little rice and beans. Plenty for two and it was perfectly exquisite. Could not have been better. The sauces that I've had, including the salsa, are NOT spicy and if you like it spicy, tell the folks ahead of time. They are very accommodating and helpful. This is a family owned restaurant and you will often see the owner there in the evenings - a very hands-on guy.

a friend of mine and i grabbed lunch here last week and i ordered the tostada salad. ordering salads when eating out takes A LOT of willpower for me, personally, but this tostada was so yummy! i cleaned that plate real gooood :-) didn't realize just HOW good it was till i ordered a tostada salad elsewhere later in the week and it was a total letdown. next time i'm in pasadena, this will definitely be on my "to eat" list :-)

My whole office goes here pretty often for lunch, mainly because 1. It's close to the office. 2. They have something for everyone. 3. Horchata, baby! That being said, El Portal is pretty great for lunch (never tried dinner here, but sounds like I should). Their tostadas and lunch specials have never failed me, and the service is good. Did I mention horchatas?

I can't believe so many people have given this place such great reviews? Not taking into account the service or the ambiance, the food here is at best above average. I cannot comment on the authenticity of Yucatan cuisine but the Pibil (roasted pork) was quite good. The other dishes were just average. The margaritas were weak and watered down. Overall not a bad place to grab dinner, just make sure you order the Pibil or other dishes from the Yucatan part of the menu.

We bought tickets for a movie at the Laemmle across the street and had about 30 minutes to kill until it started. We were starving and the idea of movie popcorn and candy in place of dinner was not appealing, so decided to walk through the "Arcade Lane" full of restaurants across the street. We wanted Mexican food and almost settled on tortas at the first restaurant in the alleyway, but decided to check out what was further down - and were SO glad we did. We immediately agreed on El Portal as soon as we walked in - the vibe was welcoming and the staff friendly. We were seated right away and our waitress came to the table almost immediately, even though the place was starting to get busy. She promptly brought out chips and salsa (warm chips, exceptional salsa) and our drinks, gave us recommendations and took our order. She was back to check on us 2 or 3 times before the food came out, refilling drinks and the chips and salsa. I ordered the Chile Rellenos stuffed with shrimp, off of the specials menu, and my husband ordered shredded beef tacos - both were excellent. The rellenos were savory and not too spicy and my husband, who doesn't eat beans, devoured the refried beans on his plate. We were able to eat, pay our bill and get back to the theater on time for our movie, but are looking forward to returning and trying other items from their intriguing menu when we have more time.

Wow. This place averages 4 Yelp stars? Really? Pasadena Yelpers seriously let me down on this one. I'm giving 3 stars with the benefit of the doubt since I only visited once. But the food I had here on my one visit was not 4 star worthy. Tri-colored chips. The weird half canned, half fresh salsa. Uber-thick refried beans. And everything else tasted like something you would get at El Torito or Acapulco. I'm sorry but if this place gets 4 stars for reals I can see why I had such a tough time finding a good place to eat in Pasadena.

Never go Here! My daughter and I attended a fundraiser and were never treated so rude and horribly in our lives! Not to mention it was by the owner!!! We were seated and got up for a minute to take a picture together. We turned around and 4 people had thrown our purses in the plants and the owner told us we should sit elsewhere. We went where he shouted and pointed and two other women were already sitting there. We went to get a table in the middle and the owner became even angrier and said 'That table is taken". It was vacant for another 20 minutes. We joined the other two ladies and became friends because of the rudeness of this tyrant, ignorant man. We then had to get our own menus, then get our own drinks, twice, then find a waiter and when our food never appeared in 45 minutes. When we were asked about it, we were told that he delivered it to someone else and it would be a while- sorry. Again waited for waters and again with the bill. The food was just ok, and expensive for what it was, the service was terrible and the owner is the biggest jerk I have ever encountered in a business towards his own customers! We will never go back and cannot express the horrible treatment we endured for trying to eat out at this rude, arrogant man's restaurant.

free parking.. do it yourself parking/ no valet. easy to find.. on the north side of green, by target/ by zona rosa coffee shop.. past the cookin school.. the outside/ inside is set up very quaintly, not intimidating.. the staff is non el coyote/ el cholo of l.a.. the manager was present, our waitress was 50+ .. actually, i noticed all the servers were not young.. before we entered, (from what we saw through the windows) my bf exclaims: "theres nothing but old white people here!" yikes.. that should have been our first warning.. we went on a fri night, so im not sure about weekday nights, but there was a trio, & the la crescenta family by us was demanding "volver volver!" (the mainstream vicente fernandez song that is widely recognized by sober anglo people) my margarita was not weak chips & salsa nothing new/innovative/or delicious for that matter.. we both ordered cochinita pibil.. the pickled onions were delicious ! the meat itself was delicious, but GREASY! the black beans were topped w/melted chedder & jack (?) the red rice was warm dont think we'll return.. $33 before the tip hey, im not racist, but if this joints filled to capacity w/white folks ( and its a mexican/yucatan restaurant), well... o yea, panuchos are filled w/shredded turkey, not topped w/chicken (like our beloved portal does it)

This place is great family run restaurant in Pasadena. Its Yucatan style Mexican food so its not your northern mexico type fare (there is a difference). The restaurant is very nicely decorated with local art. On Friday nites the restuarant has a 'trio' strolling through the dining area. Its a definate stop, you will not go wrong, El Cholo is waaaay overated.

This is one of my favorite sit-down Mexican restaurants in Pasadena. I work around the corner and frequently walk over for lunch. El Portal is a bit unique in their flavor indeed. They offer the traditional Mexican dishes along with some unconventional ones like Poc Chuc (Yucatan style pork steak), Cochinita Pibil (Yucatan Style slow-cooked pork wrapped in banana leaves), and Chicken Marsala. These three dishes are among their top dishes in my opinion. They do a great job with the other stuff like Fajitas, tacos, burritos and such but the real appeal with this place is sampling Mexican dishes you can't find elsewhere. They have a delicious super-spicy sauce that they will bring out only upon request. Sometimes it's a bit salty so be careful with it. I recommend mixing with their traditional salsa for a little kick. You really can't go wrong with this place.

I love restaurants that are tucked away in obscure alleys or streets. I especially love it when it is a Mexican restaurant tucked away in an obscure alley or street! And this is because I adore Mexican food. I love how when you enter the restaurant, the bar is immediately in front of you with people enjoying their cerveza while watching whatever sport game is on that afternoon. The decor was bright but not blindingly bright, and the artwork on the wall seemed fitting. This is what I imagine a Mexican restaurant to look like if I was visiting Yucatan or Mexico City. Their fresh made guacamole was awesome...a perfect blend of seasoning! Their chips and salsa were also very tasty and satisfying. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa because if they can't even get the simple essentials right, what hope would I have for their food? Well, the chips and salsa were great but the entree was just O.K. I generally always order the same thing whenever I'm at a Mexican restaurant for the first time, which is beef taquitos and Spanish rice because it's simple and I love anything deep fried. Well, the beef taquitos tasted bland and I've had better Spanish rice at the local hole-in-the-wall by my work. I resisted from pouring the cup of salsa down my throat after each bite of my taquito in order to get some flavor out of it. Maybe next time when I visit, I'll try something off their Yucatan Specials menu that many yelpers are raving about. But for now, 3 stars for chips/salsa/guacamole and ambiance.

My husband and I went to El Portal last night for dinner. I've never written a bad review of a restaurant before, but I was so upset by our experience last night that I decided to take action... First of all, our food was quite tasty. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole and my husband had a combination plate with a chile rellano, taco, and enchilada. The mole was decent, definitely not the best I've had, but the rest of the food was fairly good. My qualms with my experience lies solely with the service. At the start of the evening, we each ordered a margarita made with organic agave nectar and priced at $10. As we were out celebrating my husband's birthday, we asked if they served this particular margarita in a pitcher. Our server replied that they didn't, so we said we would forgo ordering a pitcher of another type of margarita and just get the regular sized $10 priced special margarita. The waitress took our order down, and then said "grande, ok?" which I interpreted as meaning this is the size the drink comes in (since it didn't state the size on the menu) which is marked as $10. I said that would be okay. we didn't really need the pitcher anyway. my husband also asked the waitress if instead of getting meat with his enchilada (included in the $11.50 price tag) he could get mole sauce instead, to which she replied he could. the margaritas were decent...incredibly sweet and not very strong, but tasty. fast forward to the end of the meal and we get our bill, and we find out they charged us $16.50 per margarita (not $10 as documented on the menu) and an additional $1.50 for the mole sauce. I questioned our waitress who claimed that we ordered the double and she couldn't reduce the $33 they charged us for 2 drinks. When I told her we didn't know we were ordering a double, she sent the manager over. I explained to him the situation, how we've never been there before, how we didn't know the grande meant a double, and how it was never explained to us that a grande was not the $10 drink on the menu. at the end of our discussion, he basically told us that he discussed it with the waitress and didn't believe us. the customer is definitely not right in his opinion. The reason I'm so upset is not due to the $13 extra (actually $14.50 when you include the mole) they charged us. It's because we left the restaurant basically feeling like we'd been cheated. I feel that the waitress thought we wouldn't check the bill or wouldn't care that she charged us $16.50 for a $10 margarita. It definitely wasn't worth $16.50 in terms of amount of tequila or flavor. And we couldn't believe the nerve of the manager who basically after telling us he didn't believe us, he asked us to come again and experience their great service! I'm not saying we'll never eat there again, but it's definitely not a good feeling leaving a restaurant feeling like you've been suckered into paying more for something and then told that you are a liar. We were so disappointed because we had such a nice time up until we got the bill. If you go to this restaurant, make sure you know what you are ordering and how much it costs because even if they made the mistake, they will still blame you for it.

Seriously, the best Mexican food that money can buy you in the area. I ain't Mexican but I've had bad Mexican fare before and this ain't a place that serves that. The fajitas are great, so are the other meals. Get a Cadillac for a drink but substitute with hinger grade tequila. Go, take some friends, have some fun!

The food at El Portal is not going to bowl you over. I think El Chollo and Mijares win in this category. But the food at El Portal is good and the atmosphere is excellent, particularly if the weather is good. Most of the tables sit out on an outdoor cantina near the Pasadena Playhouse. On a mild evening it's a terrific experience. Sit back, eat some chips, sip one of their many fine tequilas and order the carnitas plate. Muy bien.

We love El Portal's chilaquiles and coffee (w/ a hint of cinnamon) on Sundays for breakfast/brunch. It always hits the spot. The house margie is refreshing and the specials are always on point, but they sometimes run out of them if it's later in the evening. They don't take centerstage to the entrees, but the beans and rice are always really good. Their menu caters to gringos and real foodies alike. The family hails from the Yucatan peninsula and their recipes like the Cochinita Pibil and seafood dishes are legit and authentic. Their combos (taco, tamal & chile relleno, etc.) are reliably good as well. We have eaten here for onwards of 15 years and the food and service have always been on point and delivered with a smile. They carry a large variety of tequilas and full bar which is always great. Outdoor seating is really nice on a warm evening or sunny day; in cooler weather, you can sit fireside. Parking is free (need validation) and convenient. Enjoy!

kind of wish i could give half stars but 2 will do. first of all ive had better. this place is ok but i have had better. when first being seated you are given chips and salsa. the salsa isint good. kind of has no flavor. i ordered a mojito which was actually pretty good, the highlight of a just average meal. the margaritas were also ok, but they were just that ok. i ordered the yucatan trio. the rice was not good, very bland. the beans were abit too watery for my taste and also bland. the prok in the banana leaf was ok, not as tender as it should be and alittle flavorless. the tamale was ok, i like my salvadorian tamales so the tamales here werent too bad. the one thing i actually admit to being pretty good was the poc chuc. that was good. overall its not good and not bad. but i can assure you all that i wont be back under my own will. oh and the tortillas are pretty much microwaved store bought tortillas. the customer service wasent bad though.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
