I love this place. I used to live 3 blocks away and I ate here about every other day--it's terrific! I love the mole enchiladas and the prawn burrito. Also, the aguas are the best around.

Okay. I'm a vegan for healthy reasons so I cheat sometimes and a fish taco had my name on it so I'm game to respond. I decided on the cajun fish salad which seemed to honor the vegan groove a bit more and, a girl needs her roughage. The salad was truly wonderful and I definitely will go back for another cheat sometime in the not too distant future. I didn't use the viniagrette that comes with the salad because there were so many goodies on the salad : shredded cabbage, black beans, corn and that perfect seasoned and cooked Cajun fish. A definite 5 star taqueria dish. I have to give the place only 4 stars though because, and I am being a bit picky here, the customer service was just a touch off. Read my tragic saga below. The bin for metal forks at the salsa bar was empty and I like to eat my salads with a fork. Sonia ask at the counter for a fork. The young woman pulls out a drawer full of forks and simultaneously says "There are forks right there" pointing to the plastic forks just beside me. She doesn't give me a metal fork until I say, I am eating in. Can I get one of those?". I got what I needed but come on: don't make a gal beg for a metal fork when you have tons right there. Signed "Ain't too proud to beg"

This is a terrific little Mexican restaurant with inexpensive, healthful, authentic, delicious food. Not a chain. Some nights they have live music. Atmosphere extremely casual; you line up at the counter to order, and they call you when your food is ready. They serve beer and wine. I never had anything bad here. I really like their fish tacos. True the fish is fried, but very crispy and tastes great with the corn tortillas, shredded cabbage, salsa and lime juice that are included on the taco. I also love the Thai chicken wrap, the chicken caesar wrap, and the steak and shrimp burrito. I also like it that they have separate waste containers for recycling, trash and green waste.

After having the usual coffee at Caffe Trieste, we walked the avenue looking for a place to eat, and after covering half of Piedmont, ended up at Baja. I had fish tacos and got a small order of guac on the side. The guac wasn't very good but the fish in the tacos was quite tasty. Very warm & friendly service! Honestly, it was standout good service. Besides the food, there were two out of control children using the dining room as a playroom, and along with the adults with them, managed to break off a coat rack. What is up with parents letting their kids run free, disturbing other people? Should I start filming each episode I see and put it on YouTube? Four stars for the service and fish.

Fast service, great food, casual dining atmosphere. AMAZING quality for the price, great value. I can't say enough about the awesomeness of this food. It's not "fast food Mexican" nor is it "fine dining Mexican". It's just delicious funky Mexican, and it really introduced me, suckering me in with their Asian Fusion style Wasabi Burrito. Example: I am not a big Mexican food fan. Or wasn't. I AM however a huuuuuuge sushi fan. This burrito, the Wasabi Burrito, was like a mix of the two. In a spinach tortilla is wrapped a sheet of nori, seasoned rice, crispy fried white fish, avocado, cucumber, a spicy wasabi sauce and a ginger dressing all of which combine into a fusion explosion of happiness in your mouth. Don't like it? Put some lime on it for super fireworks of happy-tastebud heaven. DELICIOUS. I always get this item when I go, but I've also heard their fish tacos cannot be beat, and their lobster dishes are killer.

What I can't stand about Baja the most, are their stupid tiny as hell salsa cups!! There is no way I can dip a chip inside that small of an opening, unless I split my chip into fractions. And I'm sure it's a pain the ass for the staff to clean so many salsa cups as a result of me trying to compensate. There is a great disproportion between chip size and cup volume. I never foresaw this being a problem in any Mexican place I went to, honestly. What I like about Baja is that it is fast and relatively cheap (for Piedmont Ave.). The staff is friendly and the decor is eclectic and colorful. What I'm indifferent about is their quality food. I've had better. For me, it doesn't taste authentic enough, like they tried really hard to cater towards a more American customer base. Just look at their menu, and you'll know what I mean. I ordered a Chicken burrito, which was seasoned with salt and pepper. It tasted lighter and healthier, but also more bland. I wouldn't put Baja at the top of my list, but it'll continue to have my patronage as long as I'm on Piedmont Ave. and craving something pseudo-Mexican.

I had the shrimp taco and the fish taco; both were delicious! The quality of the seafood was very good and the portions were pretty large for the price, so I appreciated that as well. I wish that the taco shells had been grilled; they tasted too floury and plain for me (I am normally a fan of crunchy taco shells though so maybe this is my own bias). The crunch would have elevated the tacos more though as it would have given a bit more texture to the meal. I definitely look forward to trying more items on the menu, but I know now that if I ever crave well-priced and well-portioned tacos, this is the place to go to!

A good Taqueria not a great 1. I had carne asada tacos, every thing was fresh and good, although lacked some zip in the flavors. What they called hot in salsa I would call mild. Other than that it was a nice lunch. Service was good place is pleasant. Would I make a special trip for it, i doubt it, but if in the hood, sure I would give it another go. Hot Salsa! Would easly move them to 4 stars....... Just saying

I've been going to Baja for almost 10 years now - and they always treat me like family. The food is consistently great, the people are nice, and very reasonably priced.

I go here once every two weeks or so. Part of it is because of the taste, most of it is because of geographical reasons (I live like one block away). Not to say that's bad or anything, because the food here is pretty good. Baja falls into the unfortunate category of organic food. In my mind, organic means bland. In terms of Mexican food, it's not exactly a party in your mouth, but it's not half bad. It's also healthier, or so I hear, so what are you going to expect from a health food taste. Mind blowing indulgence? I think not. So far, my review would make you think that I'm not fond of the place, but you'd be wrong. What I do love Baja for is the wraps. They have different ones to appeal to the hippie crowd around here. There's a vegan wrap, nuff said. But it's actually pretty good. My personal favorite is the hole mole wrap, which is basically mole in a burrito tortilla. Their fish tacos are pretty good too. Nothing mind blowing, but not bad. Don't get the fish burrito though, it's packed with too much filler (beans and rice) that you may not taste the fish. Service here is awesome. I call in often, and they couldn't be friendlier. So, despite the average Mexican food offered here, kudos to you Baja Taqueria.

The chicken enchiladas mole rojas is delicious... That is all. Everyone who says they are known for their fish tacos is crazy! If they do not have the Mole Chicken Enchiladas, the next best thing would be their fajitas!

I'm tired of this place. I live around this area, and every time I come here I'm disappointed. Everything from the extremely mediocre guac, to the freaking store-bought-and-grated cheese that they use in their food. The worst thing you can possibly order is the grilled vegetable burrito, which has a half of a bottle of oil in it for the "grilled veggies", which they don't grill, they sautée. They cut the veggies super thin, which means that every single vegetable soaks up all that oil. Why act like you're saving the world by not using lard, when you can't figure out how to cook a decent meal? It's really not that complicated, people. Granted, they have 3 decent salsas and their chips are good. But what does that have to do with what I'm paying money for? Not much. IMHO, I wish they would go out of business so that a real Taqueria could move in.

Better than East O for fish tacos. Cost difference not worth the travel cost.

This place has gone down hill somewhat. Yesterday afternoon I got two fish tacos which I've had many times but just like last week and a month before that, the cook laced the tacos with a huge amount of thick, cold, white mayo-sauce (is that Mexican or even Mexican-American?) and then, after feeling pretty disappointed I decided to inspect my fish taco carefully. When I peeled off the fried batter on the generous portion of fish all I could find were very tiny nibs of unidentified fish (cod I think which I love) but dwarfed by the copious fried batter, (90% batter 10% fish). Their salsa bar is very good (but not great) and for the amount of food you get with a taco the price is pretty decent, but the quality is just not what it was before. One other complaint: I used to love the bean & cheese burritos here but now they just knock them out so quickly that the cheese is not melted, i.e. cold cheese & beans. I've asked a few times to make sure the cheese is melted and only once did the clerk even understand what I meant, the others just looked at me like "What are you talking about?" "You mean you don't like cold cheese?" No, I don't.

I've had their steak burrito on many occasions, and the flavors are good. They also have a band playing in the back sometimes. Why three stars? Their prices are way too high.

5 points: * their horchata is great (& they don't load it with ice) * they have Grateful Dead-inspired art stuff * extra cheese no charge * just the right amount of salt * seriously yummy veggie burrito

My favorite place in the world to get fish tacos. They are huge and the verde salsa on the bar is excellent. Yumm!! Oh and the nachos are good too, burritos so-so.

  • Tony ..

Baja is known for their fish tacos which are good. Crispy, lightly battered fish on white corn tortillas with a mound of shredded cabbage, some kind of mayo-sauce, and a lime wedge. Burritos are good too including the vegetarian one with plantains. A weird one is the wasabi burrito. It's a fried fish fillet wrapped in a nori seaweed sheet and itself wrapped in a spinach tortilla along with rice, avocados, cucumbers, etc. It was good but the wasabi sauce was a tad strong and made me sneeze/cough/migrane for a few moments. Order the sauce on the side. Food is on the pricier side.

I'm a fan of their fish tacos. The fish is fresh, hot and crispy...yessss! One taco is served on two corn tortillas and they put enough fish that technically, you can separate the tortillas and make two tacos out of one order. I like mine sans cabbage...it's just filler. I'm a fan of salsa verde and the one they serve has a mild flavor with big ol' hunks of onions and lots of cilantro. I just wish it had a bit of kick to it. The chips they serve are thin and crunchy, similar to the ones Chevy's serves. I'm a fan of burritos that don't have oil oozing out the bottom and leave your hands oily. Who likes those last bites to be filled with oil? Not I, says Christine! Baja serves burritos in which oil is not a main ingredient. I'm a fan of their customer service because it is ALWAYS nice and friendly. Despite the lunchtime crowds, the staff is always pleasant. I'll tell you what I'm not a fan of...I'm not a fan of the big lobster that's attached to the bathroom key. I know that lobster has been in the bathroom but I shudder at the thought of where EXACTLY it's been.

My favorite fish tacos in the East Bay. They aren't always consistent, but they are always tasty and I know when I am craving fish tacos that this is the place to go. Their tacos al carbon are alright too, although they are usually piled high with somewhat bland pinto beans. Surprisingly I've never gone there on a Tuesday but I intend to check out their Taco Tuesday one of these days.

After leaving Bar Cesar because of the lack of customer service we decided to come here and give it a try. I ordered a fish taco which was amazing!! The guacamole was really good but a lil too salty. My mom got a steak taco and loved it. I also ordered an horchata which was so good! Customer service was okay, not rude but not friendly either. Id give 5 stars if the customer service was better and guac was not so salty. I'd go back for sure

Highlights: 1) Meat is antibiotic and hormone free 2) GMO free! 3) Decent portions 4) Local vibe 5) $2 fish tacos Saturday night, after 6p 6) Good chips, decent salsa bar 7) Kid friendly 8) Reasonably priced Reasons's to go to another taqueria: 1) Not very flavorful/lacks seasoning 2) Fast food atmosphere 3) Needs a good scrub down 4) Lacks authenticity

We had a steak burrito, 2 fish tacos and 1 prawn taco for $28 Steak burrito: Nothing special, good but not worth the price Fish tacos: Tortillas are too thick, has a distinct flavor that takes away from the fish itself. Too much creme and not much flavor Prawn taco: Too much rice too little prawns! Same issue with the tortillas Overall, good seating and salsa bar but definitely not worth the price for the food

I am a huge fan of the 2 enchilada combo with the red mole' sauce it is tasty and fres. The free chips are usually fresh and the salsa bar is on point, definitely try the medium Chipotle salsa. Blue grass music on Monday nights gets loudish but it's usually not a long wait even when they are crowded. However if you are worried about time just call ahead. Oh and the psychedelic concert posters are very awesome.

I've noticed their "fish tacos" and "GMO free" signs often while driving by, but you know Piedmont Ave... so many options! So finally, on a Friday night, I convinced the husband that we HAVE to try their food (well, all other places we fancied were totally packed ;-)). Since I am trying to closely watch my carb intake right now (it sucks!), I did not pick the fish tacos like I had originally planned, but ordered the Cajun Fish Salad, which was really good! It came with the normal salad items, beans, corn and cheese (not a fan of the latter) and small piece of well-seasoned grilled fish - the portion was enough to fill me up. The husband had the Baja Chicken Combo and was happy with it. What I found pretty interesting about the place was the neighborly vibe I got - something I miss in other establihsments in the area. There were the teenagers, the older couples, the single guy with cell phone in hand, the dad with small daughter, who chatted with the cop, who was waiting for his take-out. The dining ambiance itself is very fast-foody though... You order and pay in front at the counter, tell them your name, fill your soft drink or take a beer out of the fridge in front and then wait for your name to be called. All in all good food (GMO free as mentioned above, sustainable, organic) - though if you want the real Mexican experience, you are better off on International - OK prices, friendly staff, interesting mix of guests. I will make another appearence!

Wanted Mexican food and I got it and was pretty stoked on the restaurant and the quality of the food. Not exactly blown away but I'd come back after this experience. $15 plus tip for a beef taco and beef burrito. Not too bad...but not great either. The portions were a good size but could have been bigger. $5 for a taco is pushing it when you're using a regular sized corn tortilla. Pros: - The beef tasted amazing. Very happy - Not greasy or rly oily like most "authentic" taquerias. - The salsa bar was fantastic. The maybe one of the top 10 verde salsas that I've ever had. The chipotle salsa was also a 10/10 - The bathroom was very clean and modern haha. Huge plus. - The cashier was a wonderful gal who knew her customers and was extremely sweet to everyone. She also helped bus tables and clean up the salsa bar which is great and rly shows that she cares about the place Cons: - Wish they gave us more chips... And a basket was $1.50 which isn't bad but.... - Parking on that street is iffy. Had to walk a few blocks but I'm definitely not complaining. Needa hit the gym anyways...

If I had written this review after my first meal here, I would have given it 5 stars. 4-stars the second time and I figure I'd better write this now, the third time with 3-stars, before it slips more. I had a calamari burrito the first and third times - great the first time, only so-so this time (in fact, it's still sitting solidly in my stomach now, some 5 hrs later. The calamari was tough this time and the taste was blah - although to be fair, I had asked for them to skip the salsa (though I did that the first time too) The second trip was a yummy lobster burrito, which I definitely considered tonight, but wanted to have a slightly less costly meal. I had fresh pineapple juice to go along with it - that was quite good. My husband's meal - 2 tacos - was equally lack luster tonight. It was OK but not knock-it-out-of-the-park. He loves the hibiscus juice and that, too, was quite good. The prices are relatively high, but the portions are large so that kind of balances out. I'm hoping that there will be a reverse-star trend when we go back - that it'll go back to 4-stars, and then to 5.

I have eaten at numerous taco joints in the East bay and one thing I have seen consistently is the questionable ingredients typically served. This place is the only place that is conscious across the board and there food is remarkable. 1. Non GMO corn chips and tortillas 2. Conscious sources for meat and fish 3. Free salsa bar with a variety of sauces, salsas and condiments to spruce up your dish. Their roasted chipotle sauce is the shizz 4. Service is fast; mostly is self serve, order at counter 5. Atmosphere is vibrant and occasionally has live music 6. Variety of dishes to choose from including Baja fish tacos 7. They host special happy hour and lunch rates 8. All of their packaging and eating wear is recyclable and compostable leaving less waste as other stands do that use toxic styrofoam 9. They are open till 10pm making it a great bite when you are running late eating dinner.

Just recently moved into the area and found this little gem. I understand what others have said and I echo their feelings when I say that this place can get pricey, but just go easy on the sides and you wont have a bad time. My go-to is the chicken burrito. I highly recommend it. My fiancee doesn't eat meat and she really enjoys this place as well. Her favorite is a bean, rice, and cheese burrito. tl;dr: Good food, go easy on the sides, I recommend the chicken burrito.

8:20pm 9/2/15 I was REALLY looking forward to returning to Baja after a couple of years away. I was sorely disappointed. I figured the Bean and Cheese Burrito and Fish Taco would be a safe bet, but the load of salsa fresca made both so soggy it dripped through the bag. And the flavor of the Bean burrito made me wonder if there was something not fresh in the fill. The fish in the taco was bland and soggy. So disheartened, I won't be back.

I wanted to love this place because it's so close to my apartment but it's meh. I came in on a Sunday night to pick up an order I phoned in. Pros: quick service. Friendly staff. Beer. Cons: overpriced and food not that great. I understand that Piedmont avenue is a pricier so everything is more expensive around here but I guess this place left a bit to be desired in terms of flavor. I'm not here to discuss the authenticity of the place, but I would say it's not the best value for your money. I'm sticking with Simply Greek a few doors down.

I really enjoy their chips, green salsa, steak taco, chicken salad, veggie and fish tacos. I also like bland food. I'm usually sad when my burrito is coming to an end, but I feel like I have to convince myself to finish the burritos there. Nice place to grab lunch solo.

I've given this place a really good chance. Since moving to this area of Oakland a year ago my chick and I have eaten here four times and last night will be the last. The reason I kept coming back is we are from SoCal where there's taco places everywhere that blow your mind and we really like Mexican food- so I really wanted this place to work. However Baja has continuously failed to deliver. Last night I got in addition to my quesadilla a carne asada taco a la carte. The meat tastes like it's been sitting around for 3-4 days, it's piled with pinto beans, two corn tortillas, soggy and sad pico de gallo, and no cheese or sour cream. All this would be bearable if the price wasn't 4.95 for one taco. But I feel like the price is the final insult. These people serve shoddy ass food to a bunch of white people who don't know any better and what's worse is going here is like a project because you have to bus your own table and procure all your own accoutrements.

  • Wes C.

I get it. Piedmont Ave, so it's going to cost more than other places. 25 bucks for 2 burritos and a bottle of water, ouch, but I might be cool with it if the burritos were any good. The extra cost didn't make my shrimp and steak burrito taste anywhere beyond below average. And c'mon, no pork whatsoever? I tend to order carnitas when I order a burrito because it's nearly always flavorful. My burrito here had bland chewy steak and shrimp that, while not overdone, didn't have much flavor. Props for the salsa bar because that was probably the only part that I truly enjoyed (get the light green sauce). And I guess the chips were fine. Is it alright? Yeah, but it's not anywhere near worth the price. Next time I'm in the laundromat waiting on laundry drying I'll be going somewhere else. Go somewhere else if you want a good burrito.

My family and I had the worst dining experience at Baja Taqueria! We were seated at our table and we were enjoying our meal when a belligerent homeless man sat at the table next to us and harassed us. It was apparent that he was deliberately provoking us by openly burping, throwing food on the floor, and swearing loudly. You may be wondering why we did not move away or leave the premises, however we were in the midst of eating and now we only wanted to finish and leave as soon as possible. Upon our departure, the vagrant confronted me and was now verbally assaulting me, my family, and my ethnicity. We left with a hasty retreat out the door. My complaint is that Baja Taqueria must be more aware of their diners' comfort and as a public dining area, the goings-on of the establishment in general. It is unacceptable to deprive a paying and properly behaved customer the experience to eat in the proprietor's establishment. Misbehavior of any kind cannot be tolerated. Unless a genuine effort to address this failure of customer service is corrected, I have no alternative but to warn others that the Baja Taqueria is an irresponsible business establishment and an unsafe venue for anyone.

When my friends suggested grabbing some fish tacos for dinner, I was oh so excited. As much as I love my carnitas and carne asada, fish tacos are always a treat. Not only are they a little more uncommon, but they taste so good! Well, usually... Walking in, I liked Baja's set-up - a lot of tables, a sitting area for us to wait for our to-go orders, and a cool little salsa bar with about five different varieties. And, of course, an appetizing array of menu options. With fish tacos on my mind, I decided to go with the TWO TACO COMBO - a Fish Taco and a Chicken Taco with Rice, Beans, and Chips ($10.50). I cracked open the box when we got back to my friend's place and I could feel my hopes rising. Not only did the food look pretty good, but there was plenty of it. Just a shame that the food fell flat from there. The fish was crispy and didn't seem to taste all that bad, but it was hard to tell since there wasn't much to go on. Ironically, the chicken taco had the opposite problem - loads of meat, but not a lot of flavor. The salsas I grabbed helped (and were pretty legit), but good tacos don't *need* salsa. Although I was pretty disappointed with my order, I wasn't as upset as how my stomach felt when I was finished eating. Considering how round 1 with Baja Taqueria ended, I can't see myself coming back for round 2. Even if the fish tacos are pretty decent, I can get better ones for less at Nick's/Underdog in SF. Not to mention how there are so many other taquerias around to try. Sorry friends, but I'll pass on Baja.

I wish I was able to give this a more thorough review, but my time here was super quick. I came here for a work lunch, and the food was already waiting for me when I sat down. I ordered the cajun fish salad ($9.50). Salad was pretty sizable and came with lettuce, cabbage, corn, and black beans. The amount of fish was pretty generous and was seasoned well. The fish wasn't very salty and was cooked just right. I was thankful that the fish was grilled and not fried. It's nice to have healthy options. The fish salad came with a good amount of chips and I used the salsa verde from the salsa bar as salad dressing. The salad didn't come with any dressing. Or at least I didn't get any with mine. Interior is pretty spacious and there is an outdoor patio too if you want to enjoy some sunshine. Overall, not a bad lunch option. It was pretty crowded when we got there, so be wary of the lunch rush!

Hands down - best fish tacos in the East Bay. Calamari, and Cajun Fish too. Generous portions and their tortillas are GMO free. Platters are huge. One downside for some - no pork offerings (don't know why). Live BLUEGRASS music most Monday nights (call to check). Patio. All paper products are compostible. Staff is efficient and friendly.

This is a good to above-average Mexican restaurant. The food is good and the service relatively fast. They're known for their fish tacos, but they have a lot of other options. They aren't the cheapest of Mexican restaurants, but the space is clean so it's worth all the same.

After having a very unpleasant experience with a different restaurant last night, I was compelled to sing the praises of Baja, one of my fave eateries near where I work! The staff are always friendly, I have enjoyed every meal I've ever had here (their rice & bean burritos, as well as their phenomenal fish tacos, are great!), and the eating area is always clean, even though it is a very high-traffic restaurant. They are low-frills and low-fuss, which is fine with me. I don't need white tablecloths every time I go out to eat. I haven't eaten here too often for dinner, but they are very busy at lunch time, and yet they still complete my order in a timely manner. Definitely give Baja a try!

The only gig in town (well more like Piedmont Avenue....) Their fish tacos are meh, but check out this list below. These are enough for me to warrant a five star review of this place What to get: -When in season, get the Steak and Lobster burrito. You will not be disappointed. - Their Steak and Prawn burrito is also really good. - They have this concoction called "Macho Fries" which basically puts the toppings from their "Macho Nachos" and puts it on their huge Baja Fries instead. For UC Irvine grads, these are the equivalent of the pub's "STONER FRIES". For UCLA grads these are your "DREAM FRIES" Check it out, you'll be in for one massive food coma afterwards.

Decent prices and selection. The Burritos are amazing, the drinks are delicious, the chips are just the right level of saltiness (and GMO free!), and the portions are large enough to satiate my husband! We've always had good service and go back often. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars in my opinion is the decor: it's not bad, but not the kind of place you want to hang out in all evening.

To be honest, I wasn't completely enthralled by the food until I came back a third time...yes I gave it a third chance. I'm very glad that I did. The food is great. I come here every week to get chips and salsa. They are extremely affordable. :)

I tend to come back here a lot... because the folks are super nice. This time, I got the chicken burrito. It came with a side of tortilla chips. [It'a a bit on the pricy side though - almost $8.] It was satisfying. I also had them replace the pinto beans with black beans (since it's healthier that way...) ;) It kept me full for much of the day and gave me enough energy to finish major work and fit in a short run... This is definitely my go-to place when I can't find any substantial meal around town. I realized today that my fave salsa is their red one... the one without the diced tomatoes - it has a great tang and spice to it - more flavorful than the other ones. Thanks again, Baja!

When you've had Mexican food that's -slightly more authentic- this place is regurgitateable. Try the water and limes, they come close to something real. P.S this place is cash only (despite the welcoming card stickers posted on the door).

I ordered a burrito wet with RED sauce. The burrito comes out, with mole sauce on it. I take it back and tell them I ordered it with red sauce, not mole. The lady says they don't have red sauce, only mole. Wtf. If I had known that I would not have ordered it wet at all. They probably wanted to just make it wet so they could charge me the extra dollar, even if it was not what I wanted. I asked them to make it again without the sauce. They made it again, and it was still not a great burrito. It had less rice than before, even when they charged me extra for my mod of extra rice, and flavorless. I ate it, but would not eat there again and do not recommend this place.

The fish tacos are really good but I personally go for the prawn burrito. The roasted chipotle salsa is a must add to everything on your plate!

My boyfriend literally dreamt of their spicy calamari burrito due to a very pleasing prior experience, so we found ourselves here the very next day for lunch. This may be a lesson to not mess with dreams. The burrito: WAY too small for $10. Calamari was practically non-existent. It tasted like sour rice wrapped in a tortilla. Good thing they use non-gmo's and no msg! My baja sampler: $13, more acceptable amount of food for the price. Consisted of a handful of grilled black pepper chicken (dry), handful of overcooked sliced tri-tip (sooo dry), some pinto beans (tasteless), and rice on a plate. A side of tortilla chips and 5 corn tortillas also came with the meal so you can make yourself some tacos! You can definitely get away with sharing this as a light, unimpressive lunch for two. I'm happy everything didn't taste too unhealthy...even more glad that we can put this dream to rest and move on.

We've been here about 3 times in the last year since changing our diet to Paleo. Our first encounter was awesome--excellent nachos with just the right about of meat and cheese. The second, no bueno--soggy chips, too much cheese, and not enough of everything else. We mainly like the fact that they serve non-GMO corn, but their product can be inconsistent and the service slow. We didn't return for over 6 months. This past visit, I ordered the nacho fries, and they were exceptionally good--right amount of cheese and super fresh salsa, jalapenos, and guacamole. When I'm off my clean eating detox and ready to carb up with some french fries (other than sweet potato), I'm heading to Mi Casa. Let's hope I don't have to wait 20 minutes for my order.

    1. The burritos are really small. 2. The burritos cost $8.50+ 3. My chicken burrito had 5 dime-sized pieces of meat in it. The rest was just rice & pinto beans. 4. The chips are greasy & flavourless, too. I paid HOW MUCH for some bland, unseasoned rice & beans in a greasy tortilla without meat?! Forget this place.

LOVE this place. I have been eating here for YEARS. Super good food, relaxed style atmosphere. I no longer work in Oakland but when I have the free time I drive over for a burrito. Went there the other day in a while and it was still as good as I remembered!

This place is so delish! We call in our orders and they are ready within 10 minutes! Love the lunch specials, you can choose a burrito, taco, or soup/salad along with chips and drink for $8! Not bad and everything is so fresh. Also, there fresh hot salsa bar, to die for :-)

  • M S.

Get their name sake. The fish tacos are awesome! The rest... well there are better places to get a burritto. And skip the lobster burritto... its more novelty than anything else.

  • Sherry K.

This place is decent and fulfills it's role as providing Mexican grub, but it's not great. Oddly, their wasabi burrito is one of the better items. Their grilled veggie burrito is average, as are most of the other standard burrito. The fish taco is pretty good. Cactus Taqueria is a better option.

  • Matt C.

The food is so fresh and tasty! Very healthy options but with lots of flavor! Love this place! I don't think you can go wrong with anything you might choose to order!

I have eaten here before. The staff is friendly. I love their fish tacos. The soda is strong as fountain soda should be. There is not a lot of Seating option because of the space. I will return.

  • Juanicio D.

Not Mexican and definitely not a taqueria! Donde esta me carne al pastor o mis tortas? Instead they have these things called wraps that are hardly even delicious. I've come in plenty of times, each time hoping my taste buds were just faulty that other time. When you're really in the mood for Mexican food you go to the first place that claims to be so. Their spicy is white people spicy, all of their spicy is. I think salt and pepper are spicier than their salsas. They should call themselves California food, because in all reality that is exactly what they are. No menudo or pozole weekends. No carnitas, carne al pastor, tripas, etc. They definitely have the look of a place that at one point did seek Mexican. If they started calling their food Californian they'd be getting a higher rating from me. As far as I'm concerned my stretch of Piedmont avenue has no Mexican food.

Pretty legit. The fish tacos were very similar to the ones I've eaten in San Felipe on the baja coast. More so than any other Norcal taco joint I've been to. Friendly staff, too. Will be back.

    (4)
  • Rob C.

Came in for the infamous fish tacos but ended up getting the sampler(no fish). It was delicious and the portions were proper. Staff was friendly and food was relatively fast. I will definitely be back to get those fish tacos. I'm bummed I've been in the East bay for over a year and I just found this place.

I've been coming to Baja since I was a baby. When I was little my parents would take me and my friends and we would dance along to the live music. It's a great place for families and the tables out back make it a great place for a date as well. The food is delicious. I strongly recommend the veggie burrito and the plantain plate. They also have some of the best horchata I have ever had! Only down side is they don't have refried beans.

  • Alan H.

I go here mainly for the convenience factor because it's practically in my backyard. The food is fairly good, but I feel it's overpriced for what you get. $10-12 for a burrito is pretty steep, but then again I'm sure they have to shell out the big bucks for that Piedmont Avenue rent. I guess I'm just more used to late night $6 burritos in the Mission. Their chipotle salsa however is LEGITIMATE. I'd give it four stars if the price of everything was $2 lower and they offered al pastor or some other pork options. A guy gets tired of steak and chicken, ya know?

    (3)
  • Tete M.

I was so dissapointed by this place like hell no the burrito only had two huge chunks of chicken and the tacos had too much beans the food was flavorless... Nope I'd skip this place if I were you too pricey for bad flavorless food

    (1)
  • Barbra I.

Fish tacos were very tasty - not at all unsatisfied with them. Loved the salsa bar and that chipotle sauce mmmmm. The dining area was on the divey side, but they have a decent back patio with umbrellas and such. The workers were friendly. I'd come back again since the price was pretty good and the fish tacos pretty much what I wanted.

    (4)
  • Monica T.

Mmmmm....can you say steak and shrimp burrito? Delicious. I always call in to order and they have it ready in no time. The only thing is its a little on the pricey side. Fish tacos aren't bad as well.

    (4)
  • Rita L.

The best thing about this place is the location, as it is very convenient for me to walk over whenever I have a burrito craving. I usually get the fish burrito. Size is decent for the price. The wait isn't usually too long, but it can get pretty busy during lunch hour or after work. Once, we ordered nacho fries and guac and chips to-go, and that was a huge hit late at night (drunk munchies!).

    (3)
  • Kim O.

Ordered the lobster and steak burrito - should have known better! The lobster was tasteless and chewy. The steak didn't taste bad, but as typical for places like this - too much rice and cheese. Chips and salsa though were good.

    (2)
  • Kristin C.

Beer and Burritos, need I say more? They have a few good beers on tap, and all their ingredients are lard free, organic, non gmo, or so their banner outside claims. Cute little outdoor patio in the back and they have a band play once a week. Go check it out!

    (4)
  • Ander C.

Well, I was in the mood for fish tacos and so I ended up here with my coworker. I ended up getting a fish burrito instead of the tacos because I wasn't ready to pay 4 bucks for a taco. Overall, it was alright and probably a step up from rubios. The fish was fried however the burrito lacked flavor. I may just be a bit biased because I've taken a liking to the Oakland taco trucks though. However, nothing too special here and being on Piedmont you will end up paying $$ for your food.

I finally am reading reviews that tell it like it is. This place is not authentic mexican not even half-way. Stay away people. I ate here once and unlike the person who tried to like it 4 different times in another posting below, he is right. I had a burrito that had absolutely no taste. Tacos were terrible. Yet the place is always packed with victims who don't know any better. Really? You live in California,..we have great mexican places to go to. This place is not worth paying at all. This is sad for me, because i live up the street.

  • Brian H.

All I can say is "Excellent"..the food is good , fresh and hot when you pick up . Service is exceptional and they really aim to please . Steak and prawn fajitas were on the menu tonight with a little hint of line . Very good . Great for a good home cooked meal on the go .

  • Loliana J.

I love the food here, the employees are really nice. It has never been speedy though. I always find myself waiting at least 10-15 minutes. I know food doesn't magically appear...but burritos usually do! It shouldn't take so long to wrap up some stuff in a tortilla. If this place was faster, I'd give them five stars in a heart beat. But I'm starving and this is takin ALL DAY!

    (4)
  • Mark D.

Love this place! Tried the wasabi burrito the other night - tasted like a giant sushi roll, although fish was grilled. Outstanding. Bluegrass band playing was very nice addition! Also like the earth-friendly absence of disposable plastic for salsa dishes, utensils when you eat-in.

    (5)
  • Terese V.

Way overpriced for something so bland. Drive by this place all the time and finally decided to try it out. I ordered 2 fish tacos. The fish was soggy and had no flavor, the tortillas were dry and hard. They hyped up the fish tacos on the website a bit too much. Not authentic.

I so love coming to this centralized location to get my fish taco craving on. In the last 2 months I have come here about 3 times on my lunch hour and just love how the food is well portioned and when the Cashier " Sammy " yells out " Oh Sergioooo , your order is ready " Sammy is very friendly and super cool as well. She gives you that piece of mind that a restaurant on Piedmont Ave should give you. The Salsa cart is my favorite because it gives you choices of how much you want your tongue to burn..... :-) It is a high end location and yes it can be a bit pricey but hey that's life. Nobody said life is cheap. The Fish Tacos are so darn filling that my brother always tells me to order that item but I always get the Carne Asada Burrito. Well when I asked for the Tacos, there were two humongous double tortillas and Super Serg had to take a long breather hold my stomach in as I left. I highly recommend this place to anybody that wants their belly taken care of..... ( ignore all of the homeless people on the street and focus on my review ) :-)

Too many beans in my soft chicken taco, but other than that-tacos were tasty. The pineapple agua fresca delish. Worth trying if youre in the Piedmont area.

Rice and bean burritos plus a side of guac and chips make a cheap, delicious vegan meal. I'm a fan of this dependable eatery.

Once you get in your head that you want Baja Taqueria, nothing else will satisfy that craving. This place is delicious AND healthy! The grilled chicken salad is one of my favorites but you can't go wrong with one of their tacos or burritos either. Plus they use non-GMO corn for their chips and tortillas!

    (5)
  • Parker S.

Quick, easy burrito go-to place. First timer, I ordered a vegetarian burrito, like always, and it was ok, I'd go back if/when convenient with work and I want a burrito just because fast service but not necessarily a place I'd have cravings to go back to...

    (3)
  • Ed U.

I had not been to Baja Taqueria in almost a decade, not since I used to live in the Piedmont Avenue area back in the day. The place still looks the same, which is not a bad thing, since they've been able to maintain the beachcomber look reasonably well over the years. But the one thing I forgot that I was immediately reminded of when I ate there was this simple fact - just order the fish tacos and don't bother with anything else. Sad to say it was true years ago, and it's still true now. A bout of amnesia, however, must have infected what was left of my mind when I came back last week since I carelessly ordered the $8.95 Two Taco Combo (see photo). Or schizophrenia perhaps. As it turned out, one was a fresh fish taco, which they describe in the menu as a "San Felipe-style filet" placed on overlapping corn tortillas. It was slight but delicious as it was served with salsa fresca, sour cream, and shredded cabbage. The other taco was chicken (at least theoretically), and it was a dreadfully dry pile of poultry offset a bit by the same salsa fresca. The contrast between the two tacos was striking, and I felt like striking someone for that awful chicken. The rice and pinto beans were pure filler. There's definitely a reason I haven't been back here in ten years. It just ain't destination dining. It's for the undemanding locals who need an undemanding bite. Nothing more. FOOD - 3 stars...a one-star chicken taco offset by a four-and-a-half-star fish taco...let's split the difference, shall we? AMBIANCE - 3 stars...still in good shape as a taco shack SERVICE - 2 stars...they've lost that loving feeling TOTAL - 3 stars...now you know what to order, you've been warned

  • S M.

Overpriced mediocre Mexican food with limited choices ( eg no pork dishes). Long wait times for food after ordering. Similar places in Montclair or Rockridge are a better bet.

    (2)
  • Philip R.

This restaurant is a take out counter with cafeteria seating, akin to a fast food joint. There is no wait-staff or busboy. The food is well prepared and priced comparably to a fully staffed cantina. I ordered red enchiladas and got mole instead. Despite their error, I was pleasantly surprised with the flavor and didn't complain. I had to clean my own table before eating and had to figure out how their bussing system worked at the end of my meal. I actually have to scrape my own plate and sort everything? I would recommend them for takeout but not for bringing a date.

Truly the best fish tacos I've ever had and the shrimp tacos are SLAMMIN also...someone brought me here when I was a teenager and now my teenagers are LOVIN' the tacos & burritos. tThe fresh strawberry juice is HUGE and a great treat as well, we usually share it, its such a big cup

Time: 1:03pm/53°F Little sunny Purpose: A word of mouth from last client saying if I haven't ate lunch yet he can hook me up with a fish taco a block up. He picks up phone and place it for me on the house. Ambiance: Corkboard frame by glass out front with menu bottom box has menus to go. Small joint that has your usual couple of tables/chairs some deco plaster here and there. No outside seatings place can hold about a dozen comfortably. It's kind of dark from outside looking in not just from the angle or reflection but simply not to bright of a place. Staff: Takes your order quickly, their part is done taking your money how long you have to wait is up to the cooks. Mines was on the house so I just saw nurses from kaiser hospital waiting and waiting. Cleanliness: Greasy tables the floor is a little sticky but as long as you have shoes on you'll be a okay. Eats/Drinks: Just two order of their famous fish tacos. Have couple of bottle Tazo tea in car and besides I don't drink sodas or high frutos juices. The fiber on the fish is definitely previously frozen type cook and cover with spices to mask it. Products: Apps, soups, salads, combos, kid's menu, side, tacos, wraps, burritos. Punch Line: Vegan options,organic-rice,black beans, tofu. Sustainable fish. Trans fat free cooking oil. Steak&lobster/lobster&prawn burritos at $16.75 ea. Final Thoughts: This place seems to only do well M-F only there were more workers nearby coming then neighborhood locals a good indication that there are other places people rather go. Come and try their famous fish taco you might or might not like it, different people have different taste buds.

This place has the distinct advantage of being the only Mexican restaurant on Piedmont Ave. I would call it okay overall. But oh man, their fish tacos are excellent.

  • Samantha B.

I'm not a big fan of this place. Its all organic and blah blah so they charge you a lot. I don't mind paying $10 for a burrito but I don't think the flavors are there. Basically I think there are better places. They do have a salsa bar

    (3)
  • Stacey B.

Baja is an old favorite of mine, as it's one of the first places I ate at when I first moved to California. They have huge menu, so choose wisely. I'm a fan of the Nachos Machos (with chicken) or the Quesadillas. The place has a down to Earth, authentic vibe, and has been around for 20 years now. Support a great local business and check them out sometime.

decent quick lunch spot but nothing mind-blowing. Have yet to try their fish taco which I guess, according to other reviews, is the thing to try. The place is small but has a nice little salsa bar and a few seats to enjoy your food quickly. Aquas frescas are great there.

Their tacos are very filling and fresh. Have tried their fish and steak tacos. Both really good but their fish is better. Good assortment of salsas to choose from. Excited to try their burritos and nachos'

I didnt expect good Mexican food on Piedmont st. It's so flavorful and fresh. None of the grease that the delicious taco trucks come with. I had the fish tacos and one was a little salty but nothing some lime didn't fix. I'm definitely satisfied!

  • Alyssa L.

My boyfriend and I went here for the first time today. We ordered a couple of chicken burritos and decided we'd eat there. The burritos were certainly worthy of recognition, but what soured the experience for us was a middle aged Filipino woman who took an intense liking to my boyfriend, like Kathy Bates and James Caan in Misery. She greeted us upon entry, then proceeded to smother us at our corner table only to speak at length and in unnecessary detail of her troubling experiences with public restrooms. When our name was called, we left in haste. The lady followed us out of the restaurant and onto the street, where she called out my boyfriend's name from several blocks away as she stood there idly, staring. So, in parting, the food warrants a return, but the experience with the infatuated woman was so unnerving that I doubt we'll be back there to eat. Really bizarre energy there. Funny that a 90lbs Filipino woman had my hulking boyfriend scurrying up the backstreets of Piedmont in ratlike terror.

  • Alexander S.

A good standby. The tacos and burritos are tasty and well-priced. They may not elevate you to another plane of existence, but they satisfy. A major bonus is that I can eat a baja burrito and still have enough energy to live my life.

  • g r.

I love Baja! I have been a customer for about six years now and though prices have changed a bit I still make a consistent effort to eat here. The staff are all really sweet and will definitely remember you if you frequent the taqueria. The salsa bar is always on point and the fish tacos never disappoint! As far as decent taquerias in this neighborhood go I would say Baja is your best choice (& tbh your only choice)!

  • Amy M.

Awesome place for fresh California-mex, especially if you live in the neighborhood. What could be better than picking up a little bag of tacos and chips on the way home for dinner? Or stop in for a quick meal on the way to a movie at the Piedmont. I love that they have Mexican soft drinks, and also a pretty good variety of salsas at their salsa bar. The fish tacos are my favorite, and also the calimari burrito. Only downside for me is the guacamole. Not sure why, but it always seems a little off--like they add oil or mayo or something (I've asked them and they sware it's just avocado....)

    (4)
  • Sydney P.

The staff is friendly, attentive and fast. We have eaten here, it's a burrito shop so nothing fancy but more often than not it's a "to-go" place for us. They get our kids items perfect every time, being that the small people are "anti-stuff" on their meals this can be a challenge but to date we have had very few mix ups. The steak and shrimp burrito on a plate, no tortilla is tasty. The chicken salad subbed out with steak is equally yummy. Their burritos have satisfied everyone we've taken. It's not authentic Mexican, but it's good American-Mexican food.

I had the chicken quesadilla and it was yummy. Good chicken, not dry like other quesadillas. Cheesy. It was great! I had some pico de gallo stuff with it, diced tomato, onion and cilantro and some sour cream. Yum! Oh and the chips! I'm sure they are made fresh there because they were hot and they had hot oil coming out of the chip bubbles lol that was goooooood. I really like this place. The service, the atmosphere. T'was nice. I'll be back!

One fish taco with chips, cilantro, salsa and aguas frescas makes a meal that really satisfies. Again: these fish tacos are awesome. If you've never had one, this is the place to start.

Boring, flavorless food but super cool 'Taco Jam' music sessions on Mondays. Do yourself a favor and seek out real Mexican tacos in Fruitvale.

I love their fish tacos. I sort of went on a taco bender when I first found out about them. It's too bad that J's shut down (across the street. It was kind of fun getting to that corner and having to choose. I appreciate that they actually make your to-go phone order before you get there, unlike Burrito Shop :[ Good guacamole and the best chips.

Fish Tacos Review only... You need really fresh fish, cooked to order and hot, with finely shredded cabbage and a perfectly seasoned white sauce for authentic fish tacos. These were the opposite of that - bland fish that was likely more than three days old, luke-warm and pre-cooked, with dry, large cabbage strands, and a mega-bland white sauce. Very nice people, but they seemed more than a little confused by our Free Fish Taco coupons for signing up for the mailing list. Very disappointed in the Fish Tacos. Try something else like the other reviewers, but pass on these fish tacos unless you love bland tasting food, or are a starving student.

  • Stephanie B.

Over-priced, mediocre, pseudo-Mexican food. The staff is nice. I go here when I'm really desperate, and I usually leave in tears remembering the good ol' days when I lived closer to large populations of Mexican-immigrants. Just kidding. About the tears.

  • Laurie H.

Really nothing extraordinary at all here. The fish tacos were mostly batter and cabbage, the chicken tacos were okay, and the place is just not fun to sit in. The seating choices are: front window: yay; tables next to the service station: ugh - lots of traffic; tables on the narrow hall: busy; tables in the back: all with full view of the doors to the men's and women's rooms. Here's an idea: put up a 3/4 wall in front of those bathroom doors - you have plenty of space - then none of the diners will feel they're sitting next to the bathrooms. Right now the whole back room is sitting next to the bathrooms. First and last time here.

I regularly get the crispy fish tacos from this place, maybe once a month or so. Today I went and ordered the usual fish tacos and noticed they were noticeably smaller. Make no mistake, the tacos taste amazingly good. One taco used to fill me up, however this time I was craving another, which never happens. I really thought the portions were just fine prior to this visit. Aside for my shrunken taco experience today, this place is good. They even have live music some weeknights.

As this place is in my neighborhood, been going there for years. Consistently good, not amazing, but when I need a fix of Mexican food it fulfills the need. I usually get the fish burrito, the fish tacos are also good. Some items feel pricey, but the staff are very friendly.

I was born and raised in the East Bay Area and lived the majority of my childhood and adolescence in Piedmont - sad as it is to say, I never tried the offerings of Baja Taqueria until a recent trip back home to visit my parents -- now I'm filled with regret! The food is amazing! My fiance was craving Mexican, so I yelped and found Baja Taqueria. We only had a small lunch - he had a vegetarian taco and I had a chicken taco - delicious, the best tacos we have had in a really long time. Thankfully, we are moving back to the area in a few short months and we will definitely be back!

Nachos machos are the best hands down!!! We come from the central valley just to eat the nachos. However, we have had their tacos.. Chicken and shrimp, and they are not worth the money. Shrimp taco.. Waste of 5$ very disappointed. Nachos are a hit every time. Service is great.. Just not the tacos.

    (4)
  • Devi G.

Pretty good shrimp and fish tacos. The tacos are pretty big too, or were when I went, so you only need one. Also a nod for the nacho fries. I like coming in here because they have beers on tap and sometimes bluegrass in the back. The owners are deadheads, and they have dead posters up on the walls. Pretty awesome.

  • Mary L.

Mediocre shrimp burrito. Maybe I've been spoiled by San Francisco ones, but this one lacked flavor and the rice and beans were mushy. I know, this combination is usually soft, but the black beans were overdone. A note about service: came in at 4:45 on a Saturday and had to wait 20 minutes because someone forgot to tell me it takes longer for a shrimp burrito. The food was not worth this wait.

  • M M.

I love Mexican food. I have tried their fish tacos that were so wet with no flavor that the corn tortilla split in half. I have tried their dried out pinto bean and prawn burritos where I only counted two shrimps. But the final straw was the worst nachos I have ever had just yesterday 9-3-13. Two chips had a large unmelted glop of cheese and nothing anywhere else. The chips that weren't soaked (unedible) where stale. So, three strikes and you are out!

Based on my last experience here, I'd have to day this place is sliding downhill fast, and If they don't fix it they will be headed for trouble. The expensive burritos I ordered were extremely salty and small in size. Price up, taste and quality down...will going to other businesses outside of the piedmont area...

I admit that this place has super food and super customer service. But the reason I'm only putting three stars is because that I don't really like Mexican food as much as I like other varieties of food. So I'm not saying this place is not good. It is great. It's just not my style.

I had given up on eating Mexican food because of the Genetically Engineered Tortillas and Chips, but this place has a huge sign outside saying " We serve GMO Free Corn Tortillas and Chips". The food is great and the service too. I am looking forward to the day when they become 100% GMO Free. I am willing to pay more for real food and I am refusing to pay anything for GMOs. I asked the manager to replace the cooking oils ( now canola, so GMO) to Rice Bran Oil or Olive Oil. He was very interested and receptive. It is great to see small restaurants making conscious effort to serve quality food! Kudos!

If you're Canadian, the first thing you want to do when you come to the States is eat Mexican food. It's only natural that once you cross the border, taco places will just magically swarm around you. On the west coast, anyway. I had a miserable time finding good places in Boston. In any case, when the BF came to visit, he wanted Mexican food. Had to have it. I tried to oblige one night at Tamarindo (whose name reminds us of Costa Rica), but they were closed. Time was running out. After a nice soak and a massage at Piedmont Springs, we were hungry. We sauntered up to the place on the left that has Meximerican food...and I put the kibosh on it. Then we came here. Yum yum yum. For a taqueria, this is some good food. It's nothing fancy, just tasty Mexican goodness in a cute place with nice staff. These are all things you want in a restaurant. The little bonus is the area outside in the back where you can sit on a nice day. It's certainly nothing fancy, but it's certainly good, eh?

I am not fond of everything here, but their spicy calamari burrito more than makes up for other less tasty items. Every time that I am in Oakland, I have to stop by and pick up a calamari burrito and a horchata. I always take it to go, and it is always steaming hot when I get to my destination. They use a lot of tender sauteed calamari and include rice, veggies, and sour cream. I usually add a squeeze of lime and some of their "hot" salsa. Always included in the bag is a couple of handfuls of fresh tortilla chips, too:) Their fresh salsa bar is a nice touch, as well...with three kinds of salsa, fresh chopped onion, jalapenos, lime wedges, and cilantro.

Burritos for lunch. Modelo in a bottle not as cold as I would like it and I didn't realize they had beer on tap until after I had paid. Back to the burritos...Hubby had steak and prawn and I had steak with the extras Guacamole + sour cream + cheese. We were both so happy and the fillings were both so yummy. I didn't have much steak in my burrito and even thought of ordering it next time sans beef, since all the flavors were present. The side of tortilla chips were nice and crispy and not oily. The salsa bar was decent and the medium red was awesome, true to its heat descriptor. Seating looked tight and I appreciate my personal space while eating. After we picked our heads up from our food did we realize that there was an outdoor patio! Dang, missed out, because the weather was perfect for dining al fresco. Would have been nice if the counter chick had mentioned things like: "we have beer on tap also", "if you like limes with your beer, you can find them at the salsa bar" and "We have patio seating also". IDK maybe since this place seems pretty popular, she took us for regulars. We will definitely give it another go next time we are in the area, the tres leches cake is calling my name, haunting me, shouldv'e tried it!

A friend and I decided to give this place a try. It had been a rough day when she shared her deepest concerns about her life problems. In the midst of this, we were hungry. "Let food be thy medicine" is a famous line by Hippocrates, and on this sunny afternoon, this restaurant provided the medicine to our inner-symptoms of craving Mexican food. I was skeptic at first, then I ordered a steak and lobster burrito and a corona. They gave me lemons for my beer (plus one star). Taking the first bite out of my burrito and realizing how juicy lobster and steak is... All in one (plus three stars). Then I realized this place was good once I heard Ranchero music in the background; this is a sign of authenticity in Mexican delicacy among foods. This, I present: 5 stars that are well-deserved. Great food, customer service and ranchero music. Take notes, my friends.

Their fish quesadillas are on point! The fish was flaky, crispy, and perfectly balanced by the cheese and the delicious green salsa from the salsa bar. The tortilla chips that come with your order are actual TORTILLA chips too! It was a welcome change from some of the crappier Mexican restaurants near the UC campus. If I'm in the area, I will definitely come back here.

Went there after a co-worker had recommended it to me. I've walked by this place several times, but I was never intrigued to go in, because it was off Piedmont Avenue (not a spot that would scream out "authentic" in terms of ethnic food). Now burgers and fries - OK. Well, as expected, the super carne asada burrito wasn't that tasty. I dosed it in their salsa and lime. I mixed the hot with the medium and added cilantro to make it my own concoction. I wasn't impressed with the burrito, although it was gigantic! I should have gone with a fish taco or something since they heavily market that there. The atmosphere was nice and spacious. They have an open patio in the back. Bottom line: $9 bucks for a super burrito isn't exactly cheap especially when it wasn't even that great. I shoulda stuck with the taco truck near my work instead!

The fish tacos were amazing. I also ordered a steak taco. It came with beans. I didn't like the beans with the steak. Next time, I will omit the beans and add cheese. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the fish tacos were off the hook!

My affair with other taquerias has continued, this time on Piedmont Ave---my home turf. While I normally don't feed in my neighborhood when I step out.....I stepped out for a late night meal with my man when we both were craving some Mexican and a quick fix for the rumbles in our stomach. Good. Not stellar. We both ate the calamari burrito with the spicy salsa from the salsa bar. it was fresh, but again nothing to write home about...just yelp. I won't be hanging here again more than likely for some Mexican, but friendly service and quick take out.

This place is a dive but has decent burritos. Chips come included. Now - down to the burritos: Rating: 3/5. Style: Fixed burrito. Selection: Mission style burritos + rice. What to Expect: Good heavy burritos, Good selection of salsas, A more than average amount of grease.

It's five star Mexican day. Also known as the day Elizabeth Edwards left John out of her will. The latter brings me almost as much pleasure as the former, but in a different, non gastronomical sad kind of way. You go E. Baja is a pleasure. Many of the kitchen crew have worked there for years, an indicator either of a benevolent owner or indentured servitude. It would be an explanatory toss up but for all the Jerry Garcia memorabilia on the walls. Must be good love. Their fare is worth the trip. The portions are sensibly sized (not the Mexican cheescake factory, which to me is good). The meats and fishes reliably good. The condiment bar well-stocked. The bathroom key is fastened to a red plastic lobster. There's a patio to warm your outside in the summer, Red Hook on tap, a big window to sit and watch the Street Sheet lady ply her trade. Which she's been doing for ten years. Which blows my mind. But that's a different story, Make Baja a stop on your next Piedmont Avenue crawl.

Fantastic taco place! I don't get fish tacos that often, and when I do I'm usually disappointed and thrown off them for several months. I took a chance here and got the Cajun Fish Taco Platter, and man it was GOOD! The fish was the highlight, both spicy and flavorful, but the whole presentation was top-notch. Definitely worth $9.

I stop here at least once a week for lunch while I'm at work. Very good food and fast service! The employees are friendly. The restaurant is clean. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that It is a little pricey. I always spend about $12-15 dollars for a lunch when I go there. But the food is good so I don't mind paying too much. I enjoy the atmosphere of the place and will definantly be a regular customer.

My husband and I placed a to-go order on 3/23. We brought it back Kaiser hospital (where I have been staying for the last 2 weeks due to pregnancy complications), and our order was incorrect. We were missing sour cream that my husband specially asked about when he picked up the food. The cashier said it was in the container. Wrong! In addition, we were missing the tortillas for the fajitas. I called to let them know that our order was incorrect. She was rude, said the next time they would make it up to us, and without further explanation, she hung up on me. I called back to clarify what she meant. She said our next order would be 50% off. We would just need to give our name when ordered. Last night my husband ordered, and went to pay. The bill was not discounted at all. The cashier had no idea what my husband was talking about when he gave his name and said our order should be 50% off due to a situation from last week. In retrospect, he should have asked to speak with the manager, but didn't want to deal with the issue or their incompetent staff anymore. We will just avoid this mediocre Mexican restaurant in the future.

This place is really good. They say they only use farm fed beef and free range chicken so that is a plus to any restaurant! The couple burritos I have tried from here have been great! They also have great salsa here (which any worth while taqueria better). I tried the chicken and the beef... the beef was much better. The chicken was a bit dry both times I tried it, thats why only 3 stars.

    (3)
  • Dara B.

I wish I could give this place a negative star. The beef isn't tasty @ all & the only thing is tasty is the sauces @ the sauce bar they have for the food! The chips are pretty good but not made fresh but out of a box!!

  • Lisa G.

The food here is good, however it's not authentic Mexican food. I've tried many of their burritos: veggie, asada, shrimp...all of which are good. I really enjoy their fish tacos, but go on Saturdays when they are on special. Baja is a bit on the pricey side, expect to pay a little under $10 for a burrito. They don't sell pork. All in all this is a good place to eat, but doesn't knock your socks off.

    (3)
  • Lydia W.

Good but expensive. I guess they have to pay rent somehow. I like their fish tacos but I would probably only ever get them again if I was majorly craving and in the area, or if I came on Saturday when they have a fish taco discount. Does that mean that's the day they need to get rid of the fish, though? Hmm..I am having second thoughts as I type this review. Their menu is pretty vast for a typical taqueria so you're bound to find something that will suit your tastes.

I have to say that everything we've eaten there, we've liked. My husband loves seafood and I like the diversity. It's also nice that their bathroom is always clean. We usually eat there and swing by during lunch time on a weekday. It's always busy and hits the spot for a good price.

Sigh, I hate to take away stars, but this place has gone downhill in the two years since I last reviewed it. The prawn burrito I stopped eating so long ago I can't remember why - I think there were too few prawns. The fish tacos have become like Big Macs - way too much sauce and lettuce to eat without becoming enraged. Bean and cheese burritos became the only thing I could eat without complaint. But then I ordered one to go this week and the cheese wasn't melted, and it was COLD. The chips were cold, too. I'm officially done with them. I've tried multiple times. It's really unfortunate because Piedmont Ave needs a good place for tacos and burritos.

It's just okay, not really A-OK. Spent a nice fall afternoon wandering around Piedmont and was craving a burrito. This was seemed to be jumping and had a good selection of veggie stuff. The first few bites of the grilled veggie burrito were good-guacamole seemed fresh and flavorful pinto beans. However, the grilled veggies were kind of oily and it was weird how they mixed eggplant in it. I can understand the carrots and zuchinni but not so much on the eggplant. Free chips and salsa-just alright. The salsa was kind of watery but had a nice kick to it. It was adequate and cheapish but wouldn't go out of my way for it. I can see living in the area and checking it out more often. Also, what IS UP with the weird lobster attached to the bathroom key. It's just strange and gross and now that I think about, I really wish I didn't have to use the bathroom when I was there. Might try some of the wraps if I ever went again-seemed like they had some interesting asian type wraps with tofu that might have been good. Very friendly service and counter staff-I would give them 5 stars. nice neighborhood place.

Delicious!, freshest, tastiest! super friendly staff, best roasted chipotle sauce as well as other freshly made sauces in their self service bar, limes, cilantro, green verde sauce all delicious!!!!! my favorites are their Wet Chicken Super deluxe burrito with verde sauce, as well as the Fish taco combo.

The first time I came to Baja years ago I ordered the fish tacos and became an instant fan. They are not stingy with the fish, I can taste every yummy bite from beginning to end. I also adore the salsa bar - while there are a nice variety of salsas I always leave with two to three containers of their hottest salsa. It's flavorful, spicy and hot enough to tickle my throat and leave my taste buds panting in delight.

I dont think I have much to go off of to give this place a great review. The chicken burrito was just okay. I think I went during their prime hour for dinner so I did have to wait 25 min for my food which isnt what a hungry person likes to do.

Great food at a great price! I have their vegetarian burrito and it was great, compared to some that only include beans, lettuce, and onions and call it "vegetarian." Their salsa bar was incredible, all four flavors were delicious and the mole sauce there is quite good.

Great location, friendly staff (seriously always nice and upbeat). They have a pretty good beer selection, a few on tap and bottled standard cerveza as well as sangria. Get the chichen enchiladas roja with mole. So yummy! Their chicken or steak fajitas are also pretty good, but not as consistantly good as the enchiladas. The fish tacos, are said to be the best. However, I have to admit, I do not all that much care for them. Altogether, great place for beer and yummy food. On some nights they also have live music. I think usually, Mondays, but I am not certain about this. Tip: Skip the sangria and get a beer instead. The sangria is good, but I think it's mostly juice.

I like this place, since it is comfortable. It is not the greatest Mexican food ever, but it is one of those places where you find a dish you like and stick with it. I love the fish tacos, the veggie tacos, and the shrimp burrito. I didn't really enjoy anything else I have tried, so I rotate between those three. They have a cute little back patio which is nice in the summer, and plenty of seating. My only gripe about the location is there is always someone asking for change out front, and sometimes it is the rude guy who yells "well I hope you enjoyed YOUR dinner" if you don't give him anything. I'm not a mean person, but it can be very off-putting. The people working here are super nice though, and they always remember you, which isn't all that common on Piedmont ave. Overall, not a destination restaurant, but a good option for those "don't feel like cooking tonight" or "i need to eat something NOW" nights.

3 stars: shrimp quesadilla. Simple, but good. Salsa was fresh, no acid so a nice sweet taste, but serving was miniscule. 1 star: Spouse ordered prawn deluxe burrito, but neither of us thought it was remarkable. We did like the lime flavor, but there's too much rice, and we don't care for the use of shredded cheese. We wouldn't order it again. 2 stars: Fried calamari. Liked that it came with lime. Batter is a little too stiff and hard when fried. I thought it was okay, spouse disliked it. Baja's not a bad place to stop in if you're on Piedmont Ave, but they don't rate up with La Calaca Loca, in our eyes.

When I lived down the street I would cruise down here to find some comfort in the nachos loaded with cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo... all kinds of badness. It had been a while since I had been here since I moved but last night my girls Yvette G and Melissa K decided we should meet up here for dinner to catch up on the latest gossip and such. They went straight for the fish tacos, because they are obsessed with them. I contemplated the nachos and deeply desired them but took the safe healthy alternative and had the chicken salad. Honestly I wasn't fascinated by the chicken but I'm wierd about my chicken so I skooted most of it aside. Between the lettuce, cheese, beans, corn, salsa and bits of chips it was tasty. Salsa here is great. Staff is nice. I vote great place to grab a bite for lunch but not my top choice for dinner with the girls.

This is a hard one, I actually like the food at Baja Taqueria, they are easily a three almost four star restaurant, but last time I went I saw something really disturbing that has me questioning whether I'll ever go again. Personally, I'm all for helping out homeless, especially if they are willing to try to help themselves, but at the same time this is a restaurant and I expect a certain level of cleanliness. I came in right before closing to place a order since this was my first time at Baja and I had my girl with me I figured I would order a few dishes and maybe post a quick review on yelp later. At first everything was great, the staff was friendly, restaurant seemed clean and all the customers looked happy. Everything was all good until I needed to use the restroom! I asked one of the employees where the restroom was and she informed me that it was around the corner but in uses, so 5 mins I waited, 10 mins I waited, 15 mins I waited before asking was she sure that anyone was in there. So she checked and said yes it's still in uses so I waited another 5 mins and then a homeless man came out from the looks and smell of the restroom he must of been in there bathing so I decided to wait until I got home to use the restroom, strike one. After the homeless left the restroom he quickly chatted with the cashier went to their thrash cans and grabbed all of their recyclables, then took a nasty a-- (sorry only way to describe it) one litter Sprite bottle walked over to the soda fountain put the openning where he drank from directly against the spout and began to refill his bottle. Sh-t was disguisting (once again sorry but it suits the sitiuation) automatic three strikes for that. I took my food to go and at first I thought about just giving it to my dog, because it had been a while since she had a burrito and she loves them, but I decided since the kitchen was somewhat in plain view and the restaurant appeared clean to give them a try. For the most part everything was pretty good. (Now my dog she probably would of ate the buritto but she definately wouldn't had been a fan of all the rice that they pile inside of it). Honestly, everything taste wise was pretty OK.

Chicken burrito ( super size it) is really yummy..... :-) I love the pinto beans, rice , lettuce and chicken inside of the burrito... Also, they have all you can eat chips and love the salsa.... Every Saturday night from 6 to 10, they have fish taco special for 2.52... I probably going to go try it this Saturday... Baja Taqueria--- YUMMY

Only good. Not extraordinary. You won't leave thinking its the best you've ever had. Shrimp burrito, a good litmus for a taqueria, was soggy at bottom from wet salsa and lacked flavor complexity. Salsas at bar quite good but only a few average chips provided with burrito. Just ok.

We were about to go to the place across the street, but my husband was lured by the "fish tacos" sign in the window. Once we got in, I was impressed by the choices offered. I tend to order enchilada plates. This place offers a mole or salsa verde option. I chose mole. And I wish I didn't. I've had mole which ranged from truly awful (Acapulco in Alameda) to truly exceptional (Taqueria Talavera in Berkeley). Baja's falls more toward the Acapulco end, I'm sad to say. I could taste the sweetness, but there was some flavor that was missing. I guess I was in a savory mood and this was tasting more like a dessert sauce. I hardly touched the chicken because it was so bland. And the same blandness/missing flavor was prevalent in the salsa bar, as well. They didn't have any type of salsa cruda/pico de gallo, so I had their medium salsa (the thin, watery type of salsa), instead. I'm not a hot sauce type of person because I can't handle the heat. But because the medium salsa was disappointingly bland, I was so desperate for any kick at all that I tried the hot salsa: Even I could handle the "heat" that didn't seem to exist. Probably the only thing I liked from their salsa bar were the pickled carrots. My husband didn't care much for the fish taco. I give the place one star for the food. An extra star for the recycling option. Otherwise, I would not come back here. I've had plenty of good Americanized Mexican food before, but this is not one of them.

I love this place. It has such good tacos and burritos. They used to have corn with mild chili powder, but they didn't have it the last time I went. The fish is fresh and they really pile everything high. Delicious!

2.8/5 okay. i'm only reviewing this for the fish tacos since that's what they've so adamantly promoted as a signature dish. it's not bad. not great either. nick's crispy in sf is better. so is anything south of burbank. but for what it is, i'd come here for my fish taco fix. normally wouldn't bother, but can't help but appreciate it, like all the other shops along bougieland piedmont avenue, for it's charm. plus for the guava nectar agua fresca, though. other peculiar things from my first time here: 1. everyone in the restaurant was dining with the same sex 2. the baby belonging to the queer couple next to me had a perpetual "O" face not too different from that of a blow-up doll 3. a bluegrass country hick band was playing inside a mexican restaurant

I saw a sign: Fish Tacos...it got me in and now I am so disappointed. Alaskan Pollock? WTF? Frozen fish in bulk from Alaska. Great. Subway uses that in their Seafood Sensation sandwich. McDonalds uses it in Filet O Fish. Cheap sushi joints use it as imitation crab meat in California rolls. And you fry it first, then put it in a taco? You trying to kill me and make me sick too? Um, yeah. It is 2010 and people want good fresh food. Find a better whitefish and grill it.

Always really nice service at the counter. Always tasty. Lots of choices for vegetarians. Good basic salsa bar. Good seasoning. Fresh fish and fresh vegies. My whole family likes the food. I had the Cajun-style salad with blackened fish for dinner tonight. I don't think I tasted any spices, but the fish was still tasty. Prices are in line with other burrito restaurants in the area.

Baja is awesome! I love getting burritos there, and pricing is very reasonable. I like the food I eat (slathered in hot sauce of course) and their chips are addictive! They have a great selection of beverages. Jarritos are delicious, and Mexican coke is definitely a plus. There's real sugar in tharrr! Most of all I loved the customer service they provided. Their employees were so incredibly friendly and helpful, it made eating in a pleasure. Ding one star for no compost, and a limited selection of salsas.

  • Iman Taliah H.

Ok so the lobster burritos are very subpar, definitely stick with the fish tacos! The seasoning was just...'off'. They do give you a nice amount of lobster in the burritos, but that's about it. The fish tacos have just the right amount of everything! Seasoning, fish, toppings, just everything. The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is is very nice. Plenty of sunlight, roomy, and smells great!

We tried the fish tacos, a burrito, and quesadillas and all were pretty good - enough that I'd go back. However the chips and salsa are very good. In fact, we now go there to get our tortilla chips rather than the grocery store.

Great place for a quick nosh - lots of choices for vegetarians and carnivores alike! Fish taco's are great - burritos are filling and made with brown rice which takes some of the guilt out of a burrito splurge! We did not try the sangria but it seems to be very popular - so we will be back for that! have fun!

Baja is a small "local" spot with good vibes. I can tell they take care of their staff because it shows in the cheerful service I always get, and the delightfully consistent deliciousness. If how people treat their employees matters to you, you can feel good spending your money here. It's not the cheapest, but you feel good knowing the money goes towards taking care of a loyal staff that you will grow to appreciate. I come here every chance I get. In addition to being delicious and fresh, the portions are huge. One burrito usually makes 2 meals for a smaller eater like me. If I go there, I am going to eat a burrito "today" not "for lunch". The open kitchen is a nice touch, because I am interested in how the food is being prepared and frankly, I like olfactory foreplay. Overall, the place is cozy, cheerful, and just a little dusty, but they have carryout so they are OCD friendly. Be sure to go to blues night and enjoy what makes this place special. I guarantee you will feel cool, just by being there, and that the food and staff will make you smile.

This place is definitely solid. I like the atmosphere here, the freshly fried chips, the salsas, and the way you can serve yourself. I got the grilled vegetable burrito, which to be honest was a little healthy for my tastes, but I definitely got my dose of vegetables!

I've had it with this place. I order my burritos to go which is probably a bad idea because I think it gives the maker an excuse to leave out ingredients and barely heat the tortilla so that by the time I get home (5 minutes away), the burrito is cold. Tell me, how hard can it be to follow the menu and put the ingredients written on it? I ordered my last burrito there today. For what they give you, they are extraordinarily expensive. Next time I'll head to the Burrito Shop on Lakeshore.

Very pedestrian mexican food... Nothing blew me away.. The grilled chicken salad was forgettable and the salsa was uninspiring.. Baja Fresh had more soul!! After coming from a year living in the Mission area, Baja Taqueira has nothing that stands out to me..

The food is decently priced and comes fast, but is mediocre and tasteless. I used to love this place as a kid, I don't know what happened.

So far we have had the flautas de pollo, vegetable quesadilla ,vegetable burrito and horchata. Everything was amazing, especially the flautas. I would venture to say that they are the best I have ever had. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The roasted chipotle salsa is great.

Nice little sorta fancy burrito shop. "Fancy" only meaning "not a taqueria," not that it is upscale dining by any means. They try to use mostly organic ingredients and have inventive vegetarian wraps for those not inclined to eat the fish or meat options. I have tried the fish and the shrimp tacos but have to agree with the masses- the fish tacos win between the two. I think it's because they're super crispy and not soggy like some of these tend to get. The burritos are large and will inevitably put you in a burrito coma following their consumption. Do not eat their burritos as a precursor to a night of drinking. I'm serious, I have made this mistake twice. The only party to be had will be the one in your tummy. Oh, and I almost forgot... one night I tried the plantains burrito and it was freaking delicious. It's like plantains and mole sauce and unicorns and magic... ask for extra sour cream to balance out the sweet and you will not regret it. This dish is a little on the indulgent side but you just have to try it once to experience it.

I have been to this taqueria a number of times, each time by happenstance. Truthfully, their food is filling and decent, so I have no complaints. I really enjoyed their fries and their lobster burrito, though my friend argues there is too much rice in them. When you're hungry and in a pinch, this is a great place to end up at. The service was strong, and the price points are a win. For that alone, Baja gets 4 stars out of me.

Good people; I like Baja, but the food's not that great. Look, Taqueria Sinaloa is the fucking *shit* and they run their business out of a goddamn truck. I'm sure they use GMO-foods, feed lot beef, etc, but it tastes so incredibly delicious that you can't bring yourself to give a shit. When the best Mexican food in the Bay Area comes out of a dingy truck in Oakland's Fruitvale district, then if you're going to have a pretty storefront with a salsa bar and whole pinto beans and all that shit, then you need to have a double-sided sheet of excuses for why your food doesn't taste as good as the dudes in THE FUCKING TRUCK IN THE 'HOOD. I like Baja; if I'm going to eat Mexican food in Piedmont (which isn't really the best place to satisfy that particular craving) then, yeah, I'll go to Baja. But I'll never go out of my way to eat there. I'll go out of my way to eat at Sinaloa.

One of the best Taqueria's in the area! The steak burritos are awesome, add some chips, homemade salsa and a Jarritos' and life is very good. I would say more, buuut I'd rather eat, Yum!

  • Christopher E.

This place is okay. It's close to my home, so when I crave Mexican food and don't want to go anywhere I usually end up here. The food is average - not bad, not great. I tend to grab food to go. Like most things in life some people love this place, other people don't. I give it 3 1/2 stars for fulfilling my lazy Mexican food cravings.

    (3)
  • Chico A.

The food is not authentic Mexican food. There isn't really anything that is worth coming for a Baja taqueria, and it's above the average price for mexican food. They will put minimal steak in the grilled steak burrito, and if you pay so they add extra, it still isn't enough. Their food vs price? Its simply not worth it. All in all just an opinion, would not recommend for people who hate Americanized Mexican food

Nothing to write home about. It's NO El Farlito's!!! I had a few things from menu. Squid burito = good. Super chicken quesadilla = not up to bay area standards. It actually tasted like alfredo sauce - it was creamy and had pepper in it. the staff seems nice.

The burritos are exceptional. They food is made fast and still tastes fresh. Additionally the service is always friendly, always :) This place makes the world a little better!

The only thing that saved Baja from a one-star review was the friendly service. They also seemed to produce the food quickly, with the exception of what I ordered: the lobster burrito. Fellow Yelpers, why have you led me so astray? Especially to the tune of twelve dollars! The burrito was 80% rice, 10% what appeared to be velveeta cheez, 5% overripe tomatoes and 5%....shrimp? I am almost certain that that was NOT lobster, given that it looked AND tasted like shrimp! I would have complained to the employees there, but it was just too hot to argue. I was sorely disappointed by it in any case, and ended up throwing away more than half of it - not worth the calories. I really wanted it to be good. Adding insult to injury, the agua fresca that I was told WAS freshly made on-site had that syrupy-sweet taste that can only be produced in factories that abuse fruit. I did not appreciate being lied to, even if it was done in a very friendly manner. One thing going for Baja was the delightful patio in the back area - very nice to hang out and enjoy a beer. Also, my friends seemed to enjoy their (safer choices of) fish and chicken tacos. Given that I live two blocks away, I might find myself here once again some day. I will not be ordering anything the lobster blech-ito.

For me, Baja is a weird place. Sometimes I eat there and the food is really good, especially the fish taco, the steak and prawn burrito, and the tortilla soup. But sometimes I eat there and the food is really bad. Like the burritos are super dry or the meat is somewhat funny tasting or the chicken and steak tacos have mounds of pico de gallo and little else. (Well, that last one is actually always true.) Anyway, because of its proximity a mi casa, I go there a lot and would definitely recommend Baja because one could potentially get a killer meal, but that recommendation would also come with a warning, because one could potentially not. (Get a killer meal, that is.) By the way, the food at Baja is similar to my sex life too. -Inconsistent. -Average. -Too much pico.

You 've got to be kidding me. This is a very poor excuse for mexican. Canre asada inedible, fish taco small and greasy. Many better options available.

    (1)
  • Cori W.

Many vegetarian options, places that have veggie tacos with corn tortillas done in typical baja taco style are a+. No lard! Their environmentally-friendly policies are wonderful, love all the effort that goes into reducing waste. They also offer an interesting variety of food i.e. plantains, fish, wraps, etc; there is really something for everyone. The free chips that come with your goodies are nice and crispy. Only complaint is that the food can be on the bland side, reach for that salsa! Mexican cola - a must!

A really mixed batch of reviews here but let's set the story straight once and for all. I would have to say that this restaurant and nick's crispy tacos are neck and neck in serving the best fish tacos in the bay area. I can only rate it base on the fish taco and nothing else because that was all I ordered. They have a very extensive menu and it can get a little much just looking at the menu board. The ingredients are fresh, the fish was cooked to perfection, the salsa was great and the jalapenos added a great spice to it. The only difference between this taco and nick's is that nick has a better sauce, nick also wraps it better so that the taco won't fall apart. Other than that if you are ever in Piedmont, this is a great place to grab a quick bite. 4 dollars for a taco. It is well worth it.

If I were a fish, I would want to go out being a fish taco drenched in salsa verde and accompanied by a Pacifico from this place. This place is the Valhalla for fish. There is no greater death to be had.

  • Kristen D.

The food here is "eh." Nothing spectacular, but definitely edible. The menu does stand out with its lobster and fish tacos, but the quality of the food does not blow me away. I usually get the food to go (it's really quick!) but indoor seating is available. The place is clean and they have a small salsa bar with three different salsas (mild, medium, hot). The one item that does make my mouth water is the nacho fries. All the fixings with steak fries instead of chips. Incredible!

  • Mikayla M.

yummmmmm! grew up in the area, and i always drive by the place never checked it out until today. *fish tacos - nice size, taste great. *fish burriott - my friend seemed to like it theres plenty of seating. love the colors/decor. a few beer/drink options. I'd def come back here, its such a busy area with plently of food options, but this is def a great lil taqueria to check out.

  • Chris W.

Does it get any better? I'm sitting here eating a fish taco and drinking a Mexi coke. as I have so many times in the 10 plus years I've been coming here. Crispy fried fish, cabbage, creama of some sort, salsa lime and Tapatio sauce from the bottle. These are the simple things done well over and over that like the sun rising bring a smile to the lips and warmth to the heart.

While I typically shy away from the yuppy looking taquerias, Baja's looks can definitely be deceiving. The best thing they have going here are their fish tacos, which I consider one of the better fish tacos that I've had in the bay area. The fish tastes fresh and is crisply fried. You can also tell that they use quality ingredients, as everything tastes quite fresh, though this is also reflected in the prices which tend to be higher than other taquerias. The green factor of this place is also very fitting of the whole Piedmont area, but not necessarily an unwelcome one. They also occasionally have bands playing in the back to provide some fun, light entertainment. The last time I was here, there was a bluegrass band playing in the back. It sounded really fun and was a total pick me up, even though I didn't really need one. I mean honestly, how can you be sad when a banjo is playing?!

1 star for staff, 1star for speed and 1 star for overall vibe. In my opinion I think their burritos are way too dry for 7-8 bucks. I've eaten my share of burritos in the bay. I know a good one and I know a not so good one. If I knew of another Taqueria in the area I would go there instead.

Man -- some of you people are tough critics! I think Baja's great. It's pretty cheap by Piedmont Ave. standards, the service is friendly, there's an awesome, highly varied salsa bar, and everything that I've ordered from Baja was delicious. That being said, I almost always get the same thing: the wasabi burrito, which is unlike anything else I've ever had: big, rich and moist, with a great contrast of textures & flavors. Mmm. I wish I were eating one now.

    (4)
  • Kyle H.

Overrated. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but a steak burrito at this cost should have more than just the basic ingredients. The chef should be putting some love into their meats via spices, shakes, or sauces. Anything, really. Baja seems to simply plop some meat over the fire and call it a day, relying entirely on their 3 hot sauces at the sauce bar to flavor their dishes. This is a shame because I don't find their hot sauces to be particularly interesting or tasty. I live on the same block and have tried this place 5 times, mostly due to the convenience factor. It's not terrible, but at these prices it's pretty basic and bland. I'll never go there again for anything but their $2.22 fish tacos on Saturday afternoons/evenings (which are the anomaly of the menu and are freaking delicious).

  • Adam S.

This place is so-so. I've been here a couple times and was not blown away. Last night I had their prawn burrito, and the salsa didn't taste very fresh, and the shrimp was overcooked. The chips were warm, but didn't taste home made. The one shining part of my meal there was the spicy green salsa (I forgot exactly what they called it). It was incredibly spicy, and tasted very fresh.

It isn't horrible, per say, just not enough food for the arm and the leg they charge you! The chicken was though and the burritos "super burritos" where small! I rather go to east oakland and go to a taco truck! at least i would be getting my money's worth!! when they say SUPER BURRITO! i expect just that! On top of that the spicy sauces where all mixed together! Ew! I'm sorry but i'm mexican i know what a good taco should taste like... and this wasn't cutting it... not by half. the only good thing was the free tortilla chips! But it "looks" like a nice place to eat, if you don't mind the smell of fish.

Reminds me of the good old days getting burritos at Planet Fresh in Santa Cruz after a glorious surf sesh. Or maybe hanging out with friends at Papas y Pollo in Sebastopol. Just what I was looking for! More expensive than your standard Burrito place, but also much more interesting. Solid vegetarian burritos, and delicious fish tacos. $2.22 fish tacos on saturday 6-10pm is my new favorite thing.

No pork? What the heck?! When I eat a burrito, I expect pig in there. Carnitas, chorizo, al pastor, chile verde, etc. but this place doesn't seem to agree. The people working there are very nice though.

keith, what is the frequency? i got the lobster burrito(11.95) out of curiosity and saw therin a lot of rice and a something resembling shrimp and/or baby lobsters. the burrito was biquito(small) the texture is similar to eating a shrimp burrito sans sauce. it was definitely not shrimp as shrimp is more crunchy. the seafood here was more pliable but not mushy. they had chips which was nice with the free salsa at the salsa bar. you can also get wine here (4.50) the mix was ok but there was no foodastic big bang. maybe i was missing the blonde addictive. is the blonde byob? incall? outcall? or maybe i should consult craigslist.

Not the best Mexican food I have ever had but I am giving it four stars for cleanliness and great service. So far, I have had the fish tacos, calamari cesar salad and calamari burrito on 3 different occasons. The breading is too thick for the fried stuff and I would have thought that was because of the lack of freshness from the seafood products but the calamari burritto is not deep fried and breaded and so far has been my favorite so far. But the soft corn tortillas taste fresh and authentic. The hot salsa is spicy enough but not too spicy. The beer has been cold. The wine not too old or stale. I go to Piedmont Yoga close to here, a few times a week and for satisfying and inexpensive food this place is pretty reliable and this the 4 stars.

I've worked on Piedmont ave for 4 years at one point and out of all the restraunt on the ave., I countine to drive out and get some Baja.. I mainly get the grilled chicken buritto or the baja fires with grilled chicken.

  • Annalynn C.

On a whim, my family and I stopped here for dinner while walking on Piedmont Ave. I wasn't expecting an "authentic" Mexican restaurant, so I got exactly what I expected... decent fish tacos, guac, and chips. Nobody else complained about their food. There was nothing exciting about this place, but the food wasn't horrible. Edible food and decent service; not a bad deal when you're trying to brave it on Piedmont Ave.

The food at Baja Taqueria is similar to my sex life in many ways: -Fresh ( not fishy) -Creative (gotta switch it up) -Expensive ( love don't cost a thing? psh yea rite!) -Organic -Quick ( only when i have a "headache") -Healthy -Open til 10pm ( on most nights, the restaurant, sicko!) -Orgasmic SO, if you are lacking the sort of sex life I posess and you are longing for that sensation, I suggest you order up a storm at Baja Taqueria!

******ATTENTION EVERYONE JUST TO CLEAR UP SOME REVIEWS BY CONFUSED "BEANERS", I AM MEXICAN AND I HAVE GROWN UP EATING LOBSTER AND BLACK BEANS. THAT WAS JUST TO CLARIFY THAT YES LOBSTER AND BLACK BEANS EXIST IN OUR CULTURE. (CLEARING THROAT) So I had the Cajun Fish Salad which made me think, damn good thing I am going through my healthy kick because a year ago I would have passed up this delish salad. It was so damn fresh, crisp, and tasty. I almost decided to give up vagina the rest of my life and go salad. Every damn bite was full of flavor and the fish was grilled to perfection. The salad included corn, black beans, tomato, cilantro, onion, and fresh romaine lettuce. Fool your missing out, I swear I feel like slanging the salads at my work. Also, I didn't even have a drink so it wasn't like I was drunk and everything was tasting good. It was a moment of sober bliss between me and my salad. Just in case your wondering why I put 4 stores and not 5, is because I think they should have more than 3 damn salads too choose from.

I've come here about 5 times and I've only ordered the steak burrito here. That's all I care to order because judging from that, their food is flavorless. Thank God they have a salsa bar! The steak burrito runs you about $6.95, not including tax, but it comes with chips!! They also have beer and Mexican sodas. One night I came in and there was a blue grass band jammin' in the corner. I hope that still happens. Pros: serves beers, salsa bar, environmentally conscious (read their signs all over the place!), blue grass night, free chips with your burrito, open later than J's. Cons: flavorless and overpriced Honestly? You'd be better off going to J's across the street if you want better Mexican food.

For two years I have been eating at this reliably tasty fish taco joint. In fact, the gf and I refer to this place as simply "Fish Taco," due to the neon sign in the window. Haven't experienced a bad meal or bad service yet. Now, I haven't ventured deep into the menu; occasionally I'll order a veggie burrito or catfish plate. Still, I'm surprised at the bad reviews. One might reasonably expect to find an "authentic taqueria" in Los Angeles or, um... the Mission. But on Piedmont Ave? Keep dreaming. Neighborhood folks stop here for a healthy, hearty lunch while shopping the Ave. or for dinner after watching a movie at nearby Piedmont Theatre or soaking in a tub at Piedmont Springs. It's a decent neighborhood fish taco spot. The soju margaritas aren't bad, either.

At one point I was here 4 days out of the week. Not because of exceptional food or anything.. but due to close proximity to my work. Their food are good and a lot of flavor to their cooking. The meat are never dry and burrito are descend size. They never go cheap with their ingredient. The (steak & shrimp) and (Lobster burrito) are good. Also the corn with some sort of sauce on it is exceptionally flavorful. I would recommend anyone who likes burrito to come and give this place a try. The only reason why they did not get a higher rating is because the prices are ridiculously over priced. Have you ever heard of a $12.00 burrito? Well here it is.. Also, their chips are some time stale. Not really a service oriented business neither.. Maybe due to the language barrier of the staff. So I give this place a 3.

This is foo-foo Mexican food. Its nice and healthy and you for sure wont find a piece of ground up chicken cartilage in your burrito like you might at an authentic whole in the wall Mexican place, but its far from what I would call real Mexican food. I mean they have a lobster burrito and a wasabi burrito on the menu. It may say its a burrito and be rolled in a tortilla, but it is not a burrito. My boyfriend being a native of Ohio loves the fish burrito, but I need a bit more authenticity then organic rice and fresh fish and beans can give me if you know what I'm saying. One thing I have to admit is good is the Macho Nachos. OMG they are an amazing mess of yummyness.

Lobster is the reason to go to Baja. It makes the quesadilla so much more gooderest than without. The lobster burrito is delicious. If I am not in the mood for Lobster, I don't go, because to get anything less than the Lobster would not stand-up to the Lobster. Lobster. The Nacho Fries are big and tasty, and I've eaten them othertimes...other times when I've had the Lobster. It's not the only reason to go, Linda loves the Wasabi Burrito and I must admit it smelled good. Even over the Lobster. I am not a huge fan of the service, but the way they deal with Lobster just makes me happy. I will also say that I've only had take-out and it's been very good, so I haven't dealt with table service of any of that, but if you can get a Lobster Burrito, a Lobster 'dilla or anything else Lobster for 11.95, it's worth it.

Not sure why this place has such high reviews, Rubios has far better fish & shrimp tacos and that's a fast food chain. Had the fish taco & the prawn taco. Both came with a 'sauce' that tasted like plain sour cream. The fish taco was bland and most of the flavor of the prawn taco came from the rice. It wasn't bad food, but definitely not worth more than 3 stars.

I wish I had yelped this place before I just stumbled in. Who puts lettuce in a burrito? Fancy lettuce too! Maybe it would have been better if I imagined it as a taco. No. Not really. At least the chips were crunchy.

Uhmmm... Okay, Please people, try to hold your concentration long enough to put the taco together correctly. I love these things, but it really puts a damper on my day when all I get in the first three bites is nothing but salsa. I've been going to you guys forever -- But please, please please just attempt to put some of that God-given ingenuity to work and I'll be that much happier for it... Thanks P.s. Eddie is by far the best employee... always smiling and very friendly!

I come to Baja weekly. It's a perfect spot when you're jonesing for Mexican food. It's not too pricey and everything on the menu is good. I appreciate they provide two types of veggie burritos, veggie and grilled veggie. Overall, the food is not ah-mazing but I am always content. I like their salsa bar and staff is friendly.

So I just finished my grilled steak burrito and am looking at the receipt. I spent $7.34 on this crap? tsk tsk On the bottom of the receipt it reads: No Styrofoam - No lard - No MSG - No preservatives - No Bad Karma! I have some words to add: No flavor - No spice - No heat in our salsa - No we really aren't a taqueria, we just use the name so people believe they're eating something derivative of Mexican cuisine. No stars for you! I'm sick of hippies opening eating establishments and using the 'healthy-card' as some means for me to want to eat there. Fine, make my burrito healthy, but use some seasoning, use some version of a pepper to add a signature spicy kick to my food so that it makes me want more and I'm not sitting here like some sucka who just got robbed by the salsa gods. The most memorable part of my journey to Baja was hopping out of the door, back onto Piedmont Ave only to come face to face with my ex-fuck buddy with his new girlfriend who wasn't even as cute as me. Ugh.. damn you Piedmont Ave.. damn you and your regulars!!

I go for the fish tacos, and I pride myself on knowing a good fish taco as they are ALL different. Fish Taco (2) plate with rice, beans, salad, sour cream, chips, $7. Score. $10 specials include plates, desert and a glass of sangria. FULL condiment bar, limes, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, 3 salsas. Clean, friendly staff. Pretty diverse menu. Order at counter. Fast enuf. Great sidewalk window and counter for Piedmont people watching. Clean accessible bathroom. Nice perfect little wood deck in the back with a karma calico cat that just might be your Aunt Minnie. We sat for hours on a slow saturday afternoon out there and the staff never bothered us. Food and the cat and the day were just perfect. Why pay more for attitude somewhere else?

This place is only a-ok due to the fact that i have went back multiple times and my fish taco was not a hot as i wanted...it wasn't even warm. It almost seemed as the fish was fried early in the morning and when i ordered it they waited like 10 minutes for only two misely tacos to be prepared like they were in the back catching the fish and frying it. But when i got it womp womp wommmmp. :P I would like to try their other items. The chips are a plus for me, as well as the salsa. Now i will give it to them they may not be good at a fish taco but they might be good in other areas. Every since my trip from San Diego during Spring Break, my friends and i went to south beach bar and grill, other places can't not compete. They are simply the best in the world...like they say on their website. Even though the service might be CRAP when you bite in that taco...all the juices and spices running down your arm will make you forget how crappy they are to you. not to mention they have more then one type of fish that you can choose from and how you would like it prepared, and the prices are CHEAP and the tacos are LARGE. Let me get back to this review...i almost forgot for a second that i was reviewing Baja Fish tacos (which cannot compare). Nonetheless, give it a try, they might be ok for northern ca, but for the best fish tacos you must go to San Diego. I would say this is good if you are in the area, and you would like a quick bite to eat to hold you over.

Definitely need to continue to sample the menu at Baja. When I was last in the neighborhood, I had the Prawn and Steak Burrito. The prawns are marinated in tequila and lime:) The steak is meaty with a peppery marinade. The burrito is humongous and also has rice, guacamole, beans, and sour cream inside. Plus you can visit the salsa bar that include at least 4 salsas and pickled vegetables. MMM-MMM! My partner had the taco platter with one fish and one chicken taco. It definitely was not as awesome as my order, so I will be back to see if their other options are worth it.

Had the fish tacos and they were awesome! The fish was lightly battered, had the perfect amount of seasoning and deep fried to perfection! Also, try the jamaica (hibiscus flower) drink.

I just moved here from Southern CA - ahem, Los Angeles (can I say that up here without getting dirty looks?), and actually like the salsa and burritos here at Baja. For the price, there is a LOT of food - AND FLAVOR. I am a vegetarian and seem to be stuck on their Veggie Burrito (not the grilled veggie burrito) with guacamole. The burrito is consistent. It is always fully stuffed (I get black beans with mine and sometimes hold the rice) and goes well with their three standard salsas. I like the salsa verde... and a little lime squeezed on my burrito as well - YUM! I have also ordered the Holy Moly wrap - which has plantains in it. It could use more mole, but overall, I am not sure why this place is getting such a bad rap! For $4-6 bucks, you can't go wrong. (Special note to long distance runners - this is a good stand-by for after a long run. Plenty of carbs and it is super filling if you eat the chips included with your burrito or wrap!)

best fish tacos I've had in the bay area. better than el metate in SF. also great veggie tacos and love the chipotle salsa. Big negative is no refried beans. Their beans and rice are fine, guacamole and chips are good. The only very slight negative with the fish tacos is the limes. Been going here for a number of years and they need a new lime vendor - they are always lacking juice - you can get a couple of drops and that's it. My honey and I laugh about it every time. Definitely not a real issue.

Fish Tacos are the best I have had in the local area so far. Perfect blend of crunchiness and flavor. Very reasonably priced, good portions( I eat two and Im stuffed) I love the free chips and salsa as well and the fact that they serve beer, now only if they served margaritas! I love to sit in the back patio in the sunshine. Im not sure why some people rate this place so low but this is the only thing I have tried here and I don't need to try anything else!

It's not cheap, for a taqueria, but then again think about the location. The lobster in my burrito was obviously languostino, kind of sad that they didn't mention that on the menu but I should have known better. For $12, all I really tasted was the melted cheese on it anyway, which may really be someone's dream burrito. The salsas aren't to my taste either, but at least the ingredients are decent quality. Try it, maybe your taste buds are configured differently than my own.

The tortilla soup is good. It's very rich and substantial for a soup. There's also a combo platter which two people can share, where all of the ingredients (chicken, steak, corn tortillas, etc) are all laid out on a big plate for you to assemble yourself. It's $10 and a pretty good deal. I haven't tried this but it looks pretty good: a buriito filled with plaintains, black beans, rice, sour cream and drizzled in mole sauce.

I had the Baja Sampler, a mix of chicken and steak. Large portions of each, with rice and beans, 4 corn tortillas and a bag of chips. Sour cream and guac on the side. all for $9.95. Pretty good deal and good food.

I like their fish tacos a lot, but last time I went, I was like...where's the fish? There was a ton of fried air in there, but nothing with substance, which was more like two breading tacos with fishy fixin's. They've been good before though. I think I'll try something lobstery next time since that seems to be their specialty.

  • Miss C.

I really, really used to like this place a few years ago, but now that I'm more familiar with the neighborhoods and other Mexican restaurants in the area... it's pretty pricey. They have a good fresh water drink selection (horchata, melon, jamaica, etc.) and sangria too. The best, IMHO, is the chicken flautas, served with black beans. A friend of mine really liked the lobster burrito, but it can set you back around $12.00, it might have been that particular season, so it may cost more or less according to market rates. Good overall, but it costs a bit too...

I had the tortilla soup and grilled veggie burrito. Both orders came with chips and the salsa bar was awesome to go with. The chips were fresh, crispy, and lightly salted. If you are a chip fiend like I am, this place is SOOO GOOD for your typical guacamole chips and salsa craving! I loved how they had compost and recycling as well. I will definitely come back here the next time I need a nacho fix.

  • Hilda Z.

Is it because I am vegetarian? Gross. I had the veg. tacos, which had tons of cabbage and beans (whoa!!). Then the veg. burrito was basically beans and cheese. People, no meat does not mean dumb it down!! ...and it ain't cheap either!!

Fish Burrito - Excellent! Horchata - Excellent! Salsa verde - slightly bland. I havnt tried the rest of the food, but i will go back at some point. Its nice that they have seating outside in the back

  • Sydney M.

Baja's veggie burrito (NOT the grilled burrito) is one of the BEST I have ever had! The grilled burrito is decent, but boring. The veggie burrito, however, is legitimately a party in your mouth. The sauce they put in there is to DIE for, plus it doesn't seem like too much sauce either (which completely ruins a burrito). Fresh veggies, better with black beans than pinto, sour cream and avocado are extra I think - but worth it!

Not great, but good enough and fresh! Best choices: get anything with fish! The margaritas are HORRIBLE! The best thing about the place. BLUEGRASS Music @ 8pm on Monday Nights! Fun, Fun, Fun!

One or five star reviews are way more fun to write. And to read. Unfortunately, some places are not bad enough to stop visiting or great enough to recommend. It's not authentic, but they do use fresh/ organic ingredients. It is "decorated" in a hippie theme of grateful dead posters, but it is clean. The chips and salsas are a big let down, but I'm fond of their fish tacos, especially with a beer. They are pricey, but they have menu items like lobster burritos that you can't get everywhere. Difficult parking, but convenient location for people strolling Piedmont Ave. And so on and so forth...

Like the spicy calamari burrito. good chips (Used to provide more by simply grabbing and dropping into bag, but now it is pre packed into individualized white baggies) a bit pricey for a burrito.

I went here tonight and it was not the first time, but after the "food" I was served, I couldn't keep quiet. I got the over priced chicken burrito. There was absolutely NO FLAVOR. Not in the rice, beans, chicken, or the salsa. I thought the first time it was later at night, someone may have been tired......so I gave them a break. Not so much. If you want full flavor, get to Pico Paco over on Telegraph before 9pm. For Shame, Baja, For Shame.

  • Rachel L.

Their fish tacos are awesome.....they also have a great unconventional burrito: the. wasabi. burrito. Very good. To me, there are two ways to do Mexican well, be very true to the culture or "spin it." Baja is in the second category. Their spin is much like their personality: new age modern hippie, so no long hair with a penchant for healthy eating. This explains the lack of lard and their approach to decor: Grateful Dead and with art chairs. I hate the dead and I hate hippies...but I love the food. This is not a traditional Mexican place and if you are OK with their approach to food, you'll dig on this place.

    (4)
  • Andy M.

Bland, bland, bland. Even the cheese here has no flavor. I have almost nothing to say about Baja because they don't really give you much to comment on. Everything is edible but immediately forgettable. The atmosphere is nice, although the restaurant is constructed backwards: the kitchen gets to enjoy the nice big window at the front, while the customers sit at the back. The picture window view of the somewhat grimy kitchen from the street might also give potential patrons some pause - if your kitchen is this visible, it better be spankin' clean.

Don't click away! I know I went overboard on sushi reviews earlier, but this review is NOT about that. I am SICK and tired, and TIRED and sick of eating sushi. I need a break from it. Strolling Piedmont Ave., there's a lot of options other than said food. There's burgers, mediterranean, chinese, asian-fusion, french cuisine, italian. vietnamese, crepes, you get the picture. On this evening, I went to Baja for some good ol Mexican. Tacos, burritos, salsa and chips is a fine detour from sushi. The medium sized taqueria is well lit and clean with pictures of Jerry Garcia looking down on you along with Warfield/Fillmore concert posters lining the walls. Live Blue Grass music on Mondays is okay, and seems apropos for Piedmont. There's no table service here, so you order your dinner at the counter and wait for them to call your name. classy. Perusing the menu, my eyes scanned for just the right dish, something UNUSUAL, something DIFFERENT to satisfy my refined taste buds. Perhaps a cheesy quesadilla w/cilantro and lime, or the popular fish tacos w/cilantro and lime, or maybe a steak taco with black beans and cilantro and lime. Decisions, decisions. Like a beacon my eyes were drawn to the words WASABI BURRITO. "Crispy fish fillet wrapped in Nori (seaweed) with cucumber, avocado, teriyaki sauce, rice and beans wrapped in a spinach tortilla". What self respecting Mexican place cooks with wasabi? Is Asian-Mex fusion the next marketing gimmick? Wasabi Burrito...that's sounds *so* unusual, like *nothing* I've ever tasted before. SOLD! The Art of Dining Alone Dining solo, I parked myself at the window counter facing the street. Basically it's saying, "HEY EVERYONE, LOSER HERE EATING BY HIMSELF". That's what I'd be thinking if I walked by. A good thing about eating sans lover, is that you can double dip the free chips in salsa. 2, 3, 4 or MORE! double dip to your hearts content. The Art of Dining Alone allows one to do away with pesky conversation, laughs, toasting and smiling. Instead it affords time to either: 1. center myself and piece together the puzzle of my day; or 2. lose myself in a good book; or 3. craft my next review Bing bing bing!! Number three wins again. The first bite of my Wasabi Burrito was sooo good, and it tasted *sooo* different from a California Roll wrapped in a tortilla.

Maybe I'm wooed by the fact I can enjoy a cold beer with my burrito on the back patio. What can I say, I'm a sucker for sunshine. I've eaten here a good handful of times and it's always been good. Nothing fancy. Nothing awful either...otherwise I wouldn't go back. Straight up simple, good Mexican food! Service is always friendly and quick. And I like that they participate in Dining Out for Life.

  • Leon C.

I was really disappointed with their fish tacos. I'm sorry to say that because I love good fish tacos. It was a bit dry and not as tasty as I hoped. The place advertise cheap fish tacos, but I didn't really care for them.

    (2)
  • Bill B.

I give it three stars because, "No" its not great..."No" its not really memorable. But i'd give it another star for everyone if they lived near this place. A great neighborhood taco-joint. If you can walk to this place--go. I would never drive here to eat though. My love for this place is conditional. its okay...its tacos dipped with a good location...so i eat there...Y Nada Mas!

  • Jenna H.

The place is super cute. Decent prices, and great food. I had the taco combo, which came with a fish taco (absolutely phenomenal), a chicken taco (pretty good), rice (very authentic tasting), pinto beans, and chips. I ordered a side of guacamole, but it was a little too sour/limey for me. Their horchata was very good, but a little too sweet.

    (4)
  • Mike Z.

Average. Ten dollars for a burrito with everything is on the expensive side.

    (2)
  • Rebecca S.

The burritos are great, the service is good, and I love the fact that they care about the environment. But please improve your salsa! It is the one glaring thumbs down in a place I go to multiple times a month.

    (4)
  • Bryan L.

The nacho fries was the best thing I had here. Burritos are good as well...but you if you're coming here, you need to get the spicy fish tacos...BOMB. Quick note, it took some time to get our food though, as the fish took a while to cook up.

    (4)
  • Chris S.

Best Bet: 1. Go there on a Monday night. 2. Grab yourself a prawn burrito and a cold beer. 3. Listen to some live Bluegrass music.

  • Garfield J.

Can we get something straight here Yelpers??? 1. Yes, the chips here suck, they taste like a newspaper. 2. Yes, the food here costs a bit more than most other places. 3. Parking blows. 4. Portion size is a bit smaller. 5. Organic rice really aint that important in the scheme of the burrito world... but you know what,?? their food isn't that bad, it is fresh, clean to the point where you don't need to worry about walking away with hepititis B, and unlike spots on Mission/24th, 16th, or International Blvd, you don't need to worry about getting stabbed/shot, steer around a pile of puke, worry about wearing Red or Blue, and eat in peace in a very nice back patio or across the street in the nice benches over at the corner of Piedmont and 40th.

Lovely - "agua fresca" was some canned peaches with water. Stale Chips . Priceless. .. Ok actually 12.00. The only good thing was the gave me lots of sour cream ..Oh wait they chared me 2.00 for that and i couldnt'even eat it because it was touching the enchillada it came with .yuck.

This is a taco joint, nothing more, nothing less. I can walk to it from my house and they serve beer. $2.22 fish tacos on Saturday. I always order 2 and feel like I need someone to take me home in a wheelbarrow. I like it. It's not gourmet, but they have a pretty big selection on their menu.

    (4)
  • Piper m.

I definitely enjoy this spot- close to the house, low key. I just had their nachos and fish tacos last night and they were tasty- not anything outragous but defnitely worth stopping for. I also like to get a glass of sangria and enjoy it with their nice warm chips..I would suggest that if you do get a fish taco to go dont wait too long to eat it thoughas mine was soggy and could have used a little more flavor..I also would have like the fish to be a little bit more...something. Either seasoned or crispy or something. sorry for being vague. Also the salsa is good, though being in the land of creative salsas, I've been spoiled so I cant say they have the best salsas, but sufficiently tasty. All in all however I do like it here and have had good experiences with the staff. I will be sure to come back like I've been doing the past few years.

Stopped here and we all shared a quesadilla and nachos. Price, quality and portions were good - but pretty average.

  • Matt M.

I have eaten here way more times than I would have liked. This place is bland and overpriced. The salsa bar is ok. The fish tacos are nothing to talk about. I always get the "steak" super burrito. I end up dousing it with onions and salsa so it is edible. Los Cantaros is way better...but Im so lazy. Dam your location Baja!

    (2)
  • Chris M.

I really want to give this place 4 stars because I go there all the time and have yet to have a bad experience. However, the quality is pretty average as far bay area taquerias go. I think the key with Baja is to be a little more adventurous and not get the standard chicken or beef burrito. There are some pretty interesting menu items such as a lobster burrito, wasabi burrito, and thai chicken wrap. The menu is definitely vast enough that you won't get tired of eating here repeatedly. The people are nice and the food is ready relatively quickly. However, I usually call ahead and phone in my order so I don't have to wait at all. Another huge plus is that it's the only decent quality food in the neighborhood that is open past 8 pm.

    (3)
  • chris c.

Ummm its ok. I want to rant about the bad first. This place gets my order wrong like 30% of the time. Forget about calling your order in too. They got mine wrong so now I walk over and order in person. It still comes out wrong. For example, today I ordered reg fries. My bill is usually high and suspect they gave me the nacho fries. Sure enough its the nacho fries. Yeah they market their food as fresh and organic. I guess thats the excuse to charge me 8 bucks for a 4 dollar burrito with no flavor. Now that I got that off my chest, I still go here and will continue to come here. Their fries are some of the best in the piedmont area. Flautas are pretty good too. This is one the few places with a soda fountain, which is a huge plus for me as I love soda. If I eat here, I eat in just for the soda refills.

    (3)
  • Sara N.

There's really no reason to come here unless you live on piedmont, are lazy, and crave mexican; unfortunately, this perfectly describes me so I have had plenty overpriced, disappointing burritos. Sometimes their nine dollars ( nine, oh god!) chicken burrito can be a step above good but the last one I had was disgustinnnggggg.Yes it is less dubious than a truck but take a chance, live life, go somewhere else.

  • Lauren C.

I've eaten here a few time, and am always pleased, but wouldn't necessarily call it one of my favorites on the avenue. However, I was quite impressed with their take out service over the weekend when we ordered lunch for a team meeting we were hosting at our Piedmont Ave office. (The Specific Chiropractic Center, shameful plug I know!) We put an order in for 25 folks on Friday evening, and picked it up at noon on Saturday for lunch. Everything was ready when we got there, complete with tons of chips, various salsa, napkins and forks. It made my job as hostess very easy! And it was delicious, and our colleagues were very happy, so they get an 'A' in my book!

  • Dave T.

This place should be called a taqueria if you call Boone's Farm wine. Crappy food catered to white folks. Of which admittedly I am one. Mexicana airlines served better food back in the day... seriously, that's not an exaggeration. If you don't know any better, disregard this review because you will love this bland tex-mex joint. But if you are one of those people that know what Mexican food should taste like, or you just have tastebuds, don't waste your scrilla.

    (1)
  • Bonnie M.

Vegan? Get the rice (not only organic but not cooked in animal broth) and bean burrito, add guacamole and cabbage. It's so wonderful I have to order it every time I go. Fresh juices are also quite tasty. If you like blue grass-go on Monday night. A little weird but interesting as a band plays. Another great thing about this place is that it's a GREEN business!

Fish Yaco-Tacos - Yummy, yummy, burp burp. Eat it fast. Drown it in crystal and salsa. Throw on some onions, peppers, and parsely. Healthy, good, filling, chips on the side, fried, no so good, but crispy. Clean, serves pitchers of Mar-gar. Nice !

I recently moved from the Piedmont Ave. area to Sacramento, and this is one of the places I miss. They have some really taste fish burritos; their other fare is quite good, too, plus it all tastes fresh and healthy. (I generally prefer that approach to the super-greasy "authentic" Mexican variant.) The place is well-maintained, too, and the staff's friendly. There's also outside seating available, nice for a warm day.

baja is pretty good.....maybe cause i love big steak fries with any taco and thats hard to find at Mexican restaurant! Big variety of food burritos and tacos. nice for lunch and decent seating i will be back. I had the fish tacos and im a big fan of fish tacos but i give baja a C grade!! the prices are kool too! will be back!

I see here are a lot of bad reviews on the taste of the food comparing it to "real" Mexican flavors. I think the food is good for whatever cuisine it is, without the expectation of what "real" Mexican taste should be. I mean...delivery pizza isn't "real" Italian pizza, but it's good for what it is--which is delivery pizza. (just a random example) So if you're looking for Burrito truck "real" flavors, perhaps, this restaurant won't hit the spot. I happen to go to Baja specifically to get the Fish Burrito. I don't get anything else just because it's my favorite. It's battered white fish...very tasty, especially with the green salsa. I think this taqueria is much better than: El Gordo, Las Palmitas, and that other spot in Berkeley-Elmwood.

Great tacos! Yummy burritos. Still, tortilla chips are awful. High time they need to find another tortilla chip maker.

Ready to knock your Baja Califa socks off ??!! I fancy myself an Ensenada Fish Taco in my blood sort of gal, and this place makes it happen. LOVE their fish tacos... LOVE their Jamaica over ice on a warm day.... delicioso! The staff is sweet and accommodating, plenty of seats inside, a few outside. Bathroom is slightly sketch, but you can't win em all.

AWFUL!!.. "I blame myself for wasting my time writing this review"... but as a yelp missionary just want to warn you guys about this place... the food especially burritos (what most people get) are flavorless!!.. Seriously they seem not to have any idea of what flavor means. And... about service?!.. don't even wanna talk about it.. BAD!!! Advice: If you don't wanna have boring and tasteless food served on your table skip this place and you won't waste your time and your money!!!

Awwweee, why doesn't this place have a higher rating?? I just finished a steak and shrimp burrito and couldn't believe how tender the steak was and how many prawns it had in it! I would definitely come back for the friendly service and the food.

  • Gloria B.

Baja's the type of place you like to have in your neighborhood. Ok, I'd like it better if the food had a little more oomph, but I appreciate a reasonably-priced, big menu, festive but casual place to grab a burrito. Props to them for the eco-friendly ethos - signs all over telling you to reuse your containers and some organic ingredients (to the reviewer who said their food is bland because it's organic - that's just weird. Dude, do you know what the word organic means? Their food is bland because it's a little overcooked and underseasoned - sure you can screw up organic veggies too, but it's not the veggies' fault). Baja has nothing on the flavor of Pancho Villa, the creativity of Cascada, or the salsa selection of Cancun, but like I said, it's the dependable one you can take home to your mother.

    (3)
  • David M.

Came here a couple days ago and grabbed a steak and prawn burrito. Honestly, at first the idea of shrimp in a burrito was a little odd, but it was pretty good overall. The food seemed a bit pricey, but so is a lot of the food in the area. I grabbed my burrito for take-out, so I can't comment on how the dine-in experience is.

    (3)
  • Lunar S.

I went here this past evening and the food was good but unremarkable. the salsa was so/so and the chips were nothing to write home about. I might go back if I am in the neighborhood but it is not a place that I am gonna go out of my way for.

Cute place right next to the laundromat, but the food is rather blah. Points for convenience, atmosphere, and a creative menu, but the food itself could use some improvement.

  • Jessica D.

This place has the BEST fish tacos in the neighborhood! I'm giving their tacos 4 stars, but have to admit, I eat little else (with exception of their yummy plantains, sans sour cream) when I'm there. I also give their staff 4 stars--they're sweet, polite, and kind...at this point, they recognize me and say hello when I come in; it's nice to have that sort of small town rapport with your local taqueria :)

Love the menu, the prices, the salsa bar, the sunny back porch, the horchata, and the sangria.

The food is pretty good. I was raised in the Southwest on good Mexican food and this is a bit bland, but the restaurant gets 4 stars because of their obvious care for conservation and the environment. It is rare to see this in restaurants, especially one that is borderline fast food. If you eat in house, very little is wasted and they vigorously encourage little waste, recycling and composting. I am a fan!

Fabulous fish tacos and burritos on the cheap. Try the grilled vegetable quesadilla or salmon tacos. This place may be pricey for the average carnivore but considering that everything is organic and freshly made, this veggie can't complain. Oh, they do serve a lobster & steak burrito at market price if you're into that kinda thing. And they don't take Discover. But they're open til 9:30 during the week which is rare for tha town.

A friend of mine brought a plantain burrito to the park one day and let me try a bite. After that i knew i needed to get one of my own. luckily i was going to be in the area again the next day so i had to make it a point to stop by. Ordered the salad and the "Hole Mole" wrap on a spinach tortilla with salsa and guac. Both were amazing. Why hasn't anyone else thought of a plantain burrito? so so good. I cant wait to go back again.

I was pretty disappointed by this rather uninspiring taqueria. The food I had was bland and uninspired, to the point that I can't even remember what I ordered. The lobster burritos are supposed to be recommended, but they were so pricey I couldn't afford to try it. Between the price I paid and the uninspiring quality of the food I felt like I might as well have been eating at Chevy's. I did enjoy the back patio and thought the inside was relatively cute, which bumps the review up a star. Generally, though, I just expect more from a local place with supposedly authentic food.

Without fail, I am always delighted by either 2 vegetarian tacos or the nachos machos with chicken and added roasted vegetables here. I'm sure the other things are good, but once I find my thing I stick to it. Really nice people, reliable, affordable.

Consistently good. Baja is a nice departure from the typical Bay Area taqueria by serving a variety of fish and seafood along side your favorite standards. Service is rapid, prices are decent.

I dunno... I came here today w/ my boyfriend, and I'm a fan. I had the chicken flautas & tortilla soup. I was pretty impressed by both! The dude behind the counter was friendly, and we didn't have to wait too long for the food. I REALLY enjoyed my flautas... if you come through here, definitely try this.

Good fish tacos and quesadillas. My son likes their bean and cheese burrito. You also get a nice cross section of the community to watch here. This place is on of the standard stops when my son and I stroll Piedmont. Other recommended stops include, but are not limited to Fenton's, Piedmont Stationary, Peets, a few of the antique stores, the shoe cobbler (run by a great and very kind family), and Collectors Corner (him not me!).

(after reading a lot of these reviews i feel like i am overhyping this place, so be warned that i am very white and have lived my entire life before july 2009 on the east coast) fast fast service, very friendly, and the grilled steak burrito was the perfect size and very delicious. i recommend "deluxing" it to add guac, cheese, and sour cream. they make their own salsa and you can purchase it there, it's very good. everything on the menu is customizable too. they gave me chips with my burrito which was a nice little extra. the prices weren't too bad (in my opinion) but i guess around here you can easily get a cheaper burrito.

I went to try this place out because someone recommended that their fish burritos were amazing. I love fish burritos being the old place I go to has closed down. I decided to give this place a try. I ordered a fish burrito with sour cream and guacamole (extra charge). When my order was ready, I took my first bite and realized there was no sour cream nor guacamole. I brought the burrito back to the counter and told them I had ordered sour cream and guacamole. The man and the woman told me its right there. I'm like no, that's the green salsa that I put on it, the other half of my burrito had nothing green on it. I think the last time I checked guacamole had a mushy texture not liquid form. So with that being said, She's like I'm gonna make you another one looking all pissed off. Your the one who made my burrito wrong in the first place and I PAID for the extras. The burrito overall wasn't all that good. The fish had too much batter and I barely taste the fish. I was not satisfied with the service they provided and the food was not good.

The fish tacos and burritos are the bomb. The rest of the food is fine, although not great, and they don't have carnitas, which sometimes makes me sad. But those fish burritos? Killer. One of my favorite comfort foods, they never fail to hit the spot.

My meal here was bland at best, for Mexican food I really expected at least some spice. My produce was at least fresh, which saved this review from modeling only one star, tho from looks of things this isn't alway the case. I would much rather take a short walk across the street to J's Hamburgers & Such, whose Mexican food actually tastes like it's been lovingly prepared and not rationed out by the military. This may seem harsh but even I can put together a better burrito, I mean really...

This is one of my favorite taquerias in the east bay. They have good seafood-themed food: I recommend the spicy calamari burrito and the cajun fish tacos. They also have a good salsa. The prices are decent, but not shockingly low, but since it's seafood, I suppose it's not bad.

Can you give zero stars? nope, but let's just say for the nature of the food this evening, that is what I wanted to rate this place. My sister and I arrive and spent $40 on food that costs pennies to make. Here was the damage: corn chowder: lacked heat (both tempature and seasoning), flavor and was served in a bowl that should have been full of a steaming bowl of pho! There was no saving this soup@! order of lobster tacos: lobster was small pieces that were unseasoned, skewered and less than a 4oz portion...but for twelve bucks? Platter was full of lettuce, tasteless salsa and rice (the only thing that was edible and I don't even like rice). order of fish tacos: fried, non-seasoned (not even salt or pepper) and came with rice and beans (nothing to even get excited about). side order of the crazy corn, smothered in mayonnaise, cotija cheese and chili...it was cold. Ok, I have had better food in ANY barrio this side of the rockies. Do people in Piedmont just have more money than taste...give me ANY taco truck at 3 am off fruitvale or International. After spending $40bucks, I should have been committed I had to go home and lick the bottom of my shoe to get the taste out of my mouth.

The staff at this place are very nice. Lots of veggie/healthy options but the food is lacking something as far as good Mexican food goes....hmmmm......maybe they are TOO healthy. Anyways overall I like this place but I would never crave the food out of the blue (which is why it only gets 4 stars).

For a place to grab some lunch and go, this was always my favorite place to go if I wasn't eating at GetA Sushi down the street. At the lunch rush, be prepared with all the lines - ordering - and waiting, to b there for 30 minutes max. 20 min minimum. I always got the super veggie burrito with whole beans and I never got a bad one. I absolutely enjoyed ever meal I ate there and still do, 7 years later. The girls there always catered to my needs , were sweet, and knew my order. Well two of them did anyway. They used to have live music on Monday which I liked. Salsa is perfect.

I almost feel bad for giving a 2 star review, but I've eaten here more than a few times and each time I've been less than impressed. I hate to say that chain places are better than mom and pop stand-alones, but in this case its true. This food is bland. Mexican food is something I eat when I want spice. I do use the salsa they provide but it can't fix overly starchy, overly cheese-stuffed burritos. I'm not talking generous yummy cheese. I'm talking making me want to vom cheese. Also, I personally don't like cilantro (which is not uncommon and may be genetic online.wsj.com/article/S… ) and this places loves to throw the stuff around. Its in all the salsas, all the burritos. Anyway, long story short: although I love Piedmont Ave, love mexican food, and love supporting small businesses....buuuut....I won't be back. :(

I really like this place. The service is fast and friendly. The place is comfortable and has a nice vibe. I like the food, though I'm not very picky when it comes to burritos so take that for what it is worth.

I'm a fan of their fish tacos and currently they have a special for $2.22 fish tacos every saturday from 6pm to 10pm. Suppose to be all organic ingredients, but can't really tell the difference. I can tell u that they are not too greasy and u feel not too topsided heavy after u eat one of their burritos. Chips and salsa are a must and they have three different kinds of salsas: very spicy, spicy and mild.

The two stars are for the really nice people who work here. Otherwise, this has to be my least favorite burrito destination in the East Bay. I want to like & support this place since it's in my neighborhood, but it's been consistently disappointing. The vegetarian burritos are bland and the salsa is watery. The chips are tasteless and greasy. The nachos are passable if you skip the salsa... but really, it's pretty hard to mess up nachos.

I've officially given up on Baja - the food looks right, the restaurant smells good - but it is the blandest "mexican" food I have ever had. When I want Mexican on Piedmont Ave I go to Js. Make the trip to Cactus if you want your Cal-Mex - at least their food has flavor.

  • Shyam P.

Should I be impressed by organic rice? Wait, does a burrito even need organic rice? I played it safe and went with a steak burrito. It was kinda small and didn't even have guac for $6+. The super fancy organic rice was, well, super fancy dry. The steak was pretty good though, I'll give them that. They coulda hooked my burrito up with more of it. Their green salsa was way sour and the spicy one was all spice without any sort of taste.

Fair nachos and fish tacos. The food is surprisingly flavorless, the salsa hardly worth eating. Overall, not recommended.

I try and I try again but I'm always left with a feeling of ehhhhh, I wish i would have gone some place better. I like the decor of the place but not a fan of the food or the service. The only reason I go to Baja is the fact that its a quick walk from home when I want something quick. I wish Piedmont had a good Mexican joint.

  • Laura K.

Fish tacos, people. That's the reason to go here. (The chicken tacos and enchiladas are good too.) If you're not into fish tacos, don't waste your time, but if you like them, yummmmmmmmmmm. They're great here.

one of the worst burritos ever. how can you mess up a veggie burrito? it just felt and tasted mushy. ew. gross.

  • Jackie M.

maybe i didn't order the right thing. based on what i've seen from other people's reviews, it seems i should have ordered something with seafood. anyways, the quesadilla tasted and looked like alice the maid from brady bunch made it. the corn chowder was pretty good, though. anyways, i'd have been more satisfied eating at taco bell to be honest.

I got super steak nachos ad they were everything but super. The chips were soggy and the meat was mostly fat and gristly. I paid about $9.95 total for my meal and I charged it to my debit card. When I got the statement from the bank, turns out they mischarged me an additional $20 so my meal came out to be 29.50 in reality. Needless to say I cancelled that charge so the meal was free. Worst free meal I've ever had.

Really good for a quick bite to eat. Highly recommend the prawn burrito. Clean and friendly service. Creative dishes (lots of your regulars, but with seafood).

Best place on Piedmont to get a burrito. Plenty of fresh seafood and legit chunky vegetables in every dish. Portion size leaves a little to be desired if you are the type that likes to gorge yourself on Mexican food, but you get quality ingredients, so don't be a glutton. Impressively huge menu for such a hole-in-the wall spot.

WASABI BURRITO!!!! I know it sounds gross, but it's quite possibly the best combination ever. It just works. I would drive many miles for this thing. I can't really think of any other reason to go here. You must try the Wasabi Burrito.

  • micaela r.

i got the veggie burrito, deluxe style. simple, right? hard to mess up, right? well, the burrito was cold! sure, lettuce is cold, but that shouldn't make the whole burrito cold. there were beans and rice in that thing, shouldn't it be warm? the cheese didn't melt at all in there. it was a cold and rainy night, and i wanted a hot burrito to warm me up. instead, i got a cold burrito that leaked everywhere. i'd go back and try something different, but there are many other places i'd rather eat.

the only reason people are offering up less than four stars is because they are not eating he "hole mole" burrito. seriously kids, it's delicious! anyway, ate there today for the first time [plantains... in burritos... count me in!] the boyfriend and i split the garden salad with cilantro- lime dressing and the plantain burrito [duh] add guacamole and salsa. needless to say, we were pretty darn happy! i can't wait for more! +1 green business

MMMMMM..... I love Baja Taqueria! I have seen the mixed reviews but lets be honest it's a taqueria, tacos are what they do best. For this reason I have never tried there enchiladas, flautas. But I do on a regular basis enjoy their chicken tacos, so good. A huge helping of season fresh chicken served with pinto beans and onions in a soft corn tortilla. There is usually so much meat that I make two tacos out of one. Their selection of salsa's, and chips are always fresh, I have never gotten stale chips, or chips that taste like they have been fried in bad oil which is hard to get for some reason out here. Their fish tacos are to die for, a new fav of mine. Crispy not greasy fried fish served with a creamy salsa, cabbage, and cilantro. Some other items I have tried is their seasonal corn served sprinkled with cotija cheese, and their calamari, also very good. They have a small selection of beers, and margaritas. Over all very fresh every time I have dinned here, totally affordable I have never spent over ten bucks here, and they also have a cool patio for warm evenings.

i remember, as a child, hearing that people would actually consume a taco made with fish and thinking how disgusting that was. ahh, how simple i was back then. i was introduced to a fish taco a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised, although it didn't leave too heavy of an impression. i couldn't tell you where i first tried one. a few months ago i was at my favorite bike shop in the entire bay area, montanovelo, and asked my buddy steve where i could grab a quick "burrito or something", to which he replied, "baja" with no fanfare. i found the place, walked in, checked out the menu of various mexican/californian/creole/japanese offerings and saw that which now forms the archetype for all fish burritos in the entire world. yes, the entire world. the deluxe fish burrito has yet to be topped, in my opinion, and i find i return to the piedmont area more and more often, searching for some reason to be way up there other than baja's fish burrito, but unsuccessfully. the only way to make their burrito better is to squeeze fresh lime on the burrito before each bite. many limes are forced to die for this pleasure, but until california makes it illegal, i shall continue with my habits. this burrito and an ice-cold beer are what perfect days are made of. believe me, i know.

This is a great place. I usually get a lobster burrito, which has a lot of lobster plus other good stuff. The fish tacos are superb, too, as is the guacamole. The ambiance is nothing to write home about, but if you're looking for a good burrito on Piedmont Avenue, this is the place.

i remember the last time i ate here: i wasn't feeling my finest and the cure all? baja taqueria's chicken burrito with lots of hot salsa to-go. love this place, a must try! already looking forward to the next burrito..

they have an extensive grill menu and i almost always order the super steak burrito which i eat half there and half for the middle of my shift at the hospital. considering total bill is $11, it's an okay value since i'm making it into two meals....very filling! i like that the place is in an area full of diverse restaurants, staff was clean and friendly, and that they're environmentally friendly with all their recycling and stuff. overall good experience!

Tasty fish tacos. Pricier than in other parts of Oakland, sure, but they've got a lock on Piedmont Ave's taqueria business for now.

I love this place. Since we live in the neighborhood it seems like we're there at least once a week. I've had most of the menu (I craved Mexican food like crazy when I was pregnant). It's all good. I don't think the Lobster dishes are worth it though. The fish tacos are great as is the El Jefe burrito and the shrimp quesadilias. It's a local favorite.

I just moved to the Piedmont neighborhood and I am sorely disappointed that there are 6 dry cleaners on the street and no good taquerias. I gave this place a shot. The vegetarian burritos have no flavor and the ingredients taste like they came out of a can. Even worse, the horchata tastes like sweet runny custard. Gross! I liked the chips unlike some people. J's Mexican across the street is better but not as good as Los Cantaros.

Went in on a Sunday night when all the businesses were empty yet there was a line. Not a problem, I waited. I finally ordered my food and the cashier was nice. That's where it all ended. As my girlfriend and I went to look for a table, there was none except for one. The one table available was filthy and disgusting. We went to another table towards the front that was dirty too but we just sat there. When the food came, the way the salsa bar is organized was confusing. The salsas were plain. I felt like making my own. The food itself looked good, but when it came time to taste it, it felt like they sprinkled all types of spices in order to make it taste good and hide their horrible way of cooking. Way overpriced and overrated too! If you want crap, go here, I think I'd rather go to J's across the street.

  • Richard R.

This place is a little pricey but the food is always good. On my most recent trip, I ordered the fish tacos. The fish was crunchy and the portions were huge. The service is fairly quick for such good quality. The only downside is that the place runs out of tables quickly on the weekends.

  • Mike O.

Whenever someone tells a fish taco joke, I stonefacedly tell them off for mocking my new favorite food. Baja has a great selection of seafaring Mexican items, including the positively divine Wasabi Burrito, which tastes kind of like a fresh burrito and kind of like a California roll. Plus, bluegrass on Mondays.

  • Reade A.

Though it's not the spiciest Mexican food in the world, it's fresh and it doesn't contain lard, which I appreciate. I always have a good meal here, and while it's not cheap, it's definitely worth the price. (And in case you think this is a review from a white boy not used to "real" Mexican food, you are wrong--I grew up in a largely Mexican environment and have had plenty of the real thing. Sure I love the fried-pork-and-stone-ground-tortilla real-deal Mexican food, but a lot of people don't realize how heavy that stuff is, whereas Baja's meals will keep you a lot lighter on your feet.)

  • Angela L.

yeah.. i'm not too sure about this place. i got the enchiladas the first time and the mole sauce was a little funny.. and i got a steak burrito today and it was a) really expensive for what it was b) the steak still had a lot of fat that hadn't been trimmed off. overall, mediocre food, priced too high.

one time the steak quesadillas were off the hook. last week it was overcooked but i ate it anyway. fish tacos were unimpressive. from reading the other reviews, inconsistency might be an issue here. i think i'll just stick to my prawn burritos! no complaints so far! it's not the best mexican food but i'll continue to eat here because it's about a 5 minute walk from where i work. parking is a beeyotch on piedmont avenue.

Pookie W. was spot on when she said, "They only survive because of their location". If they weren't serving hipsters on Piedmont Ave., and relocated to a less-convenient locale, I'm sure most of the people wouldn't go out-of-the-way to eat there. Another boring taqueria in a great location.

    (2)
  • David T.

Most bland/boring/tasteless prawn burrito I have ever had. I'm certain given the same ingredients my gringo a- - could cook up a better prawn burrito. Calamari burrito tasted fishy. Tonight's burrito dinner ruined our previous experiences there. Fried Calamari Salad and mole dishes are great. But tonight, super bummed.

  • O B.

Had a salmon burrito there for lunch. Pretty damn good. Enjoyed my huge burrito and left full and satified. It was fresh (and not just in a RUN DMC way). Would recommend to anyone looking for lunch without any fanfare on Piedmont Ave. Oh, and the man who took my order was extremely nice and courteous too.

It's a warm night on a Friday, and I was totally bummed out by the terrible traffic and having wasted over an hour. My SO and missed going to the A's game and decided to wander around for a reasonable place to eat and discovered Baja Taqueria. In spite of what they don't have -- no tamales or pork, the place does have a good selection of seafood and a nice deck out in the back to enjoy. The house sangria soothed my nerves and sitting outside on a warm night was a nice experience. We didn't go for the lobster burrito ($15) but will probably try it next time we visit.

  • Leslie C.

Ok, so I am not trying to pretend like this is the most authentic taqueria I have ever been to, but considering the serious lack of decent mexican food around Lake Merritt/Piedmont Ave this place is pretty damn good. They have those yummy fish tacos, a variety of fancy seafood, and some kick ass nachos to boot. I would recommend this to any one with an inkling for some awesome fish tacos or a margarita with some kick ass nachos.

This place is alright. Went to eat with a friend and decided to give this place a try even though there are many other options on the block. We just ordered a steak burrito for 6.25 and it was good, but not great.. It could have a little more flavor and wish it was a little more bigger. I guess they are known for their fish tacos but i didn't order that. Parking around Piedmont are mainly meters but i think there are some regular parking on the inside blocks.

I sometimes stop here for a quick dinner because I live so close by. However, I am not really wowed over by this taqueria. I generally order the bean and cheese burrito with sour cream and pinto beans. I tried the black beans but they seemed unusually crunchy and bland. Another time I ordered a quesadilla but it was really small and incongruent with the price. The chips taste greasy too. Honestly, I prefer Baja Fresh for the exact same meal and a lower price. Nonetheless, I do like those kosher dessert treats from Grand Bakery. I'm not sure how a burrito and black and white cookie goes together but I enjoy it!

  • Elizabeth S.

i was totally going to defend baja against its critics, and then i went there tonight. i've been there a handful of times before, and every time i have liked the food. thought it was solid. the prawn tacos are yummy, as is the cajun fish salad. however, this evening i ordered the spicy calamari burrito. big mistake. and the dude at the counter had the attitude of an independent record store clerk. so inviting. i'm hoping tonight is an anomaly, but it made me wonder. one unexpected plus is the groovy little bluegrass band that plays every monday night. worth checking out.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
