I had the baked salmon, mashed potatoes, and (what I think was) steamed spinach. I ordered the kids pizza. They enjoyed their pizza, and it came out right around the time my food came out. The kids and I all shared and enjoyed my salmon. The mashed potatoes were creamy, and the spinach was alright, nothing amazing. There was a lot of food on a smallish plate. Maybe that was for effect, set up that way on purpose. The place can be confusing, given that you can't quite tell which is the "official" entrance. They didn't really acknowledge me at first, and I wondered if it was because I wasn't "snooty" looking enough - I'd had the idea that this was that kind of place. It was small, but looks very upscale when you walk in. We came right after they opened for dinner, so I was hoping to get faster, better service. Not really. I may go back, just for the food alone, but I'll continue to expect upturned noses from some of the waitstaff.

I finally went here after two different people suggested it. There was six of us and even though I would have liked more than a tiny glass of water all night ... The wine, beer and food were delish. Oysters (both versions) Calamari Onion rings Salads Flank steak dish with French fries Seafood soup (can't remember the name) But we all liked our food - we will be back for dessert:) Friendly people too.

As much as I want to give this place more credit, I really can't. The entrance door was locked; people knocking all the time. Food took a long tie to cook. Food is over priced. My skirt steak stir fry dish was way too salty and French fries were cooked in it(not a fan), they barely gave me any rice. The jambalaya tasted like it was straight from a can. The burger was pretty good and the salad with the burger was great. The atmosphere is great here, I just wish they did a better job at serving a better dinner. I wasn't very pleased. I don't think I will ever come back

So, I've been to Beso four times. The first two were amazing. 4 stars. This review is based entirely on the third and fourth visits - this past Thursday, 28 May, and this evening, 30 May. What the hell is going on?!? Previously, I've been with friends and family and we've enjoyed wonderful meals. Highlights have been: filet mignon, fish tacos, sole special, and that fantastic clam chowder. Thursday was a prelude, I didn't want to believe that it was anything more than a blip...maybe someone called in sick and they were understaffed. We didn't even eat...we just stopped by for a drink before a show. It took almost 40 minutes to get us served a glass of wine and a beer. I had to chase the waitress down to pay. Ok, that must have been an outlier. They'll have the A-team for Saturday night, right? After all, based on my recommendation, eight of us were going to eat dinner. Sigh. It started with horrific service. Truly awful. Ok, give her a break, she's totally in the weeds. Fine. The food will make up for it, right? Right?!? So, how was the food? Mediocre at best. Abysmal in certain instances. The clam chowder was awful. What happened to that amazing ambrosia we had previously? This was thick, creamy, gloop with a hint of...nothing. It was worse than Campbell's soup. At least with Campbell's you know it's going to be bad. But, if you've ever had Beso's clam chowder at its best...it's sublime. Tonight was not that. The filet mignon with veal demi glacé. Delivered first. Delivered cold. Medium rare, as ordered? No, just rare. The glacé was nothing like previous times...just a watery broth slopped over the plate. The Gorgonzola mashed potatoes were a cold slab of carbs. Ugh. Add to that the halibut special sans sauce....at least the fish wasn't dry. But, come on! But, hey the one order of fish tacos came out great. One out of eight is good...right? Right!? Sigh. If you're expecting something great and you get terrible. Do you give them a second chance? Someone else, please go and post your review. Please. Tell me the Beso of the past is back.

can't believe we haven't discovered this gem sooner, apparently we've been living under a rock! Delicious with a welcoming atmosphere. Our new "go to" place in Novato!

I really liked the small atmosphere and the outdoor patio/deck. Yes it wiggles but I grew up here and know the difference between an earthquake and a deck that people walk and dine on. Food was good. I had the crab sandwich. It was very tasty but the bread needs to be better. It was Sunday so maybe they were running low. Salad was out of the box or something with no flavor. My girlfriend had the chicken and waffles. It was really good. I can't wait to get that next time. And the beer! It's cold. And only $5 a pint. They have really good beer on tap.

I love this neighborhood place that used to be Hamilton Cafe. The food is delicious, wine selection is awesome, and unlike most places the service is actually impeccable. The beignets with bananas and chocolate are amazing, for breakfast or dessert. Nicely priced mimosas at brunch. Quiet patio seating.

I am literally sitting at the bar as I write this review I've been sitting here with my fiancée for the last 10 minutes without the bar tender or the server even asking about our order or even acknowledging our presence

We are lucky to have Beso in town! Incredible food, with an incredible atmosphere. The staff are friendly, and work diligently to keep the pace but unfortunately today I went with a party of 12 and was disappointed. The service lacked, and it took over an hour for our food to be served. Despite this, the staff worked hard and diligent to make an effort worth remembering. On the brighter side of things, the food was phenomenal! I had the Beso Burger with avacado and bacon and found myself lost in what was an absolutely delicious hamburger. The appetizers were also spot on! The calamari is to die for, and the dish who's name I have forgotten (French fries, steak and rice) was an exotic treat! All in all I'm a patient man and decided to give a four star. * Great atmosphere * Friendly staff * A menu that wouldn't get old very quickly * And an excellently unique taste! * lots of parking! Thank you Beso! I look forward to taking a pretty girl to your restaraunt some day :)

What a lovely lunch spot, just a tad noisy. Went with a regular who suggested the fish tacos but I went with the blackened salmon salad which was so awesome. It had mango and strawberries with fresh lettuce and the salmon itself was also delicious. It comes with a mango vinaigrette which sounded really sweet to me so I just asked for olive oil and vinegar on the side. The fish tacos looked great too. Our waiter was very sweet and accommodating as well.

This is a great place in Hamilton! Easy parking and great food. I was really impressed by the standards of their meat and seafood options. On the bottom of the menu it explains exactly what kinds of meats they use. It was rich, yummy, delicious food, and you can feel good about where your meal came from! (Oh and they allow doggies on their patio!)

Met a friend for lunch here two weeks ago. We both ordered the Fish Tacos and they were delish! What I really liked about this dish is that they don't deep fry the fish in batter as many places do. It was pan-seared with very flavorful seasoning that was not overly spicy. The haddock was cooked just right - flaky and not dried out at all. The Jalapeno Crème- Chipotle Aioli, Guacamole, and Pico de Gallo topped it off nicely. The negative was that the service was a bit sketchy (we had to ask for things twice and they weren't busy at all).

New favorite spot in Novato! Don't tell anyone...this place will probably be mobbed in no time! Great patio area with partial shade, diverse menu, and food and service were very good. Also very kid-friendly! We had chicken & waffles & classic breakfast and it was all very good. Great addition to Novato!!

This place is amazing. Michele the owner could not have been a better hostess. Great portions. Reasonable pricrs, and extremely tasty menu. Interesting dishes check out menu.I had fish stew a la casa and it was awesome. Reasonable wine prices great selection. Would definitely return when I return to Sonoma.

I was in town for work and was staying at the best western plus. Ended up going to Wild Fox for dinner - bad decision. We tried the Poke and got nauseous. So salty and oily , just terrible. They really should take it off the menu. I don't know if anything else is any better because we left...decided to go to Beso, just two miles away. Best decision I ever made. Quaint and homey with a nice outdoor patio and a small bar. New owner that is an awesome pastries chef. Love the menu! Great Saturday brunch! Best in the area.

One of the worst meals of my life....Took 20 minutes for waitress to bother to find us with menus. I ordered a medium cheese burger with bacon, medium; plus a glass of white wine (Beso was out of my first two choices) before dinner and a red when food was served. 30 minutes later the food arrived. Then the glass of white wine; no red in site. Burger had no bacon, was well done and cold; cheese was stuck to top bun and the size of a butter pat. When burger was returned from kitchen, the so-called Apple wood bacon was two pieces that would not add up to a full slice. Half of the lower bun was completely missing. The waitress would talk to one table, then go to the kitchen. Never capable of multi-tasking. After more than an hour of torture, we just left, hungry and despondent. What a horrible experience!

Finally a great restaurant in Novato! Beso you need to be downtown! Great food, great service. Totally affordable. Great wine list. Went with a party of 4 adults and 4 kiddos. Kids menu was simple but good. We had the fish tacos, fish fry, and 1/2 chicken. We started each with different salads. The salads were so good we were excited for the dinners. Especially the butter lettuce salad and fried oyster salad! Yumm! There are NO GOOD SALADS IN NOVATO!!! Only Grazie downtown. We are really excited about this place. It is a gem and we will be back next week. Highly recommend.

As we walked in, we were greeted by Michelle, the new owner. It was about 2pm and there were only a few other patrons there so we felt as though we had the run of the place. Mom had the calamari, B had the Crab cake holendaise and I had a shrimp louie salad. The look on each of our faces after we'd taken our first bites said it all. Each dish tasted fantastic! Although we're not foodies, we can recognize a well prepared meal that not only looks appetizing but also tastes great---and that is exactly was we were enjoying. The service was good and not intrusive, the decor was pleasing to the eye and the parking was plentiful and nearby. All in all, we will be going back!

One of the seven of us photographers from Sonoma County heard about Beso and suggested that we try it after an afternoon of taking pictures. Be it that we are from Sonoma County, we all enjoy good food and wine, So we put our cameras in the trunk and went to Beso. We made a good decision. Since it was a Tuesday night, the Bistro was quiet with a few people around the bar. The server, whom we found out is the owner, put some tables together for us, closed the front door so neither chill or glare of setting sun would bother us and then said the magic phrase "Tuesday is half price bottle of wine night." The wine list is simple, short and has some very nicely priced good wines on it. We ordered the Malbec and enjoyed it. The menu has a nice selections of appetizers, salads and a good variety of entrees. I had the Chilean skirt steak stir fry which was very tasty, good portion and served with a side of nicely seasoned Jasmine rice. My Caesar Salad was called a "side salad", but was larger then most sides. Few restaurants make Caesar Salads with much flavor, but this one was full of what makes a Caesar Salad so popular. It was one of the best I've had. The others in the party were all very pleased with their meals. Several ordered the cerviche' appetizer and were very impressed with it. The roasted salmon was a hit with those who ordered it as were all the other meals served. The presentation was also very attractive. The owner said that she had given her server the night off so she was both serving and doing some of the cooking (the joy of ownership is that you do it all), and we all felt that the service was good. In looking at some of the other reviews here, sometimes that may be a weak link in dinning here, but we didn't experience it. The open kitchen is small, so the wait for food for our party was a little slow but not to being a problem. Final plus: they do have a TV by the bar so the Warrior fan among us could watch most of the playoff game. PLUSES: Good variety in the menu including vegitarian and gluten free; Nice wine list decently priced; Pleasant atmosphere; Food well prepared and very tasty with nice flavor Pricing is decent for the food and atmosphere Owner is very nice and cordial (and for the other dirty old men out there, also very attractive). CON: Maybe when I go back I might find one. (As a group of photographers who just had a sesson on photographing food, we should have taken some pictures, but we enjoyed our meals without distraction.)

Went here last weekend for dinner. It was a Saturday night and called ahead. They seemed concern about fitting us in but made it work. When we walked in, they had a table ready and waiting for us. The servers were very busy, but still greeted us very quickly. Our server was wonderful. She gots us food and drink quickly, and made sure everything was great. We ordered the ceviche, seafood brochettes, and bouillabaisse. All was delicious! My one complaint would be that I wished they cooked the seafood brochettes longer, but it was sill yummy. My husband kept saying that we would be heading back there soon!

This place is fantastic! We sat on the outdoor patio on a beautiful day. Had the blackened salmon salad with fresh fruit... awesome! The clam chowder was also excellent. We also enjoyed a ceasar salad with huge prawns...delicious! The wait staff was extremely nice and the owner greeted us with kindness and a beautiful smile! Highly recommended and now my favorite place in Novato!

Eat, drink, beso. After a recent dinner at Beso, I walked out of the restaurant with a new definition of the word beso. I was at dinner with my parents, who were in town from Southern California, and my youngest son. It wasn't until we finished another amazing meal that my mom mentioned how loud and animated our conversation had been at the table, she said that it felt as if we were home only with better food! Maybe that's why I'm drawn to this place as opposed to many of the other restaurants in Marin, that feeling of a family atmosphere is sadly becoming extinct in our society. I've noticed at Beso that it's the norm to see complete strangers conversing freely in the bar seating area, often times even spilling into the main restaurant portion. People are thankfully not glued to their phones and retreating into their own world but rather interacting freely. I've met a Scottish grandfather that face times with his grandkids in Australia, a cancer survivor who is still battling, and most recently a WW2 vet whose wife gave me a hug after buying them a drink. The drink of choice for a 95 year old WW2 vet? Racer 5 of course! The food is beyond fresh and nothing short of excellent, the staff is friendly but it's the atmosphere of family that Beso seems to create that will keep me coming back.

Had always seen this place driving through Hamilton and was pleasantly suprised to find this little gem in Novato. We showed up right at 5:30 for a Sunday dinner because we had to be somewhere at 7, there were already a few tables full when we arrived. We were seated on the deck, it was still warm out and there was plenty of shade. Our server took our drink order quickly, and she was always busy because I think she was the only one there. I had the blackened salmon salad, it was really great! It was fresh, not soggy with dressing and the salmon was delicious, I ate teh whole thing. My husband ordered some kind of seafood plate whuch he saud was really good, except for the fried oysters he said were a little soggy on the inside. The only downsides I noticed were that the server seemed a little busy but we will definately be back, I want to try their brunch as well. If we had more time I would have loved to stay and try their desserts.

Love this place! We're locals in the neighborhood and stop by often for various delicious dishes. Staff makes good company, in a great atmosphere! Dishes to try; the seafood brochettes with lemon sauce, crab cakes, blackened salmon salad and any one of there amazing home made deserts! Gotta make the trip! I'm lucky enough to be down the block !!!

My wife and I were afforded the opportunity to venture south from wine country into Novato CA and enjoyed an excellent meal here. Beso Bistro has a little something for everyone. Great entrees, sandwiches and salads accompanied by craft beers and an excellent selection of California wines. Owner sous chef Michelle Berlin has begun her tenure here with great fresh pairings that will undoubtedly tickle the fancy of foodies from San Francisco to Napa. Well worth a visit!!!

What a gem!! We were in the neighborhood to visit the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and heard about a nice eatery next door to the artist studios. Well we found it and were we greatly surprised. The place was great - open area feeling, great staff, great prices, and the food was some of the best we have had in a while for lunch. I ordered the Lomo Saltado, a Peruvian dish of strips of skirt steak cooked with tomatoes, french fries, onions, and a wonderful sauce served with a light and fragrant rice pilaf - I dam near licked the plate. V ordered a dungeneous crab cake benedict - another great item - wonderfully flavor of crab, the eggs were poached perfectly - breaking apart to coat the benedict with a wonderful sheen of fresh yolk, and also served with sweet and regular potatoes on the side. The fish taco dish ordered by Spank was right on, she wanted the recipe for the chipotle sauce topping her crunchy and soft chunks of fish, Hopie's chicken cobb salad was also eaten until the last morsel was consumed. Two of us also ordered the piping hot clam chowder - another good dish. My only regret is that it is not in Sacramento where I live or that its in a strange location away from any downtown - this is a neighborhood restaurant in the old Hamilton Airbase property catering to a wonderful neighborhood surrounding the MOCA Museum/Art Studios.

Since posting my original review, Beso was sold. New owner Michelle Berlin also acts as sous chef and is very involved in every aspect of the restaurant. Menu highlights are the fish tacos, Beso burger and the dim sum-like dumplings Michelle's mother makes. The restaurant has been updated and feels intimate but "lighter"'and more modern. Beso is a destination spot but one that is worth "the trip" in northern Marin, where good food is difficult to find. The only negative is the wine selection, which is uninspired - many can be found at the nearby Safeway. Why not add some interesting smaller production wines?

A great neighborhood restaurant! My wife and I walked to Beso for our anniversary dinner. We started with the roasted garlic, three cheese, salsa hors d'oeuvre, added the arugala salad, and I had the fish tacos while she choose the swordfish. OMG they were all delicious. The wines were terrific and reasonably priced and the service was attentive and helpful. Go eat here, we want this restaurant to succeed.

Yummy! Came here and dined at the bar. Crab cakes and Fish tacos were delicious. Both were still crunchy, not at all soggy and portions were great! The chipotle sauce had a nice kick! Friend had burger. She said it was good. The fries were fantastic! I would certainly come back to try other things! The wine list was somewhat average so with only a $10 corkage bring your own bottle.

OK went here Saturday night and they were super busy. We did not have a reservation. It took 10 minutes to find a server to ask if we wanted to wait, they were packed only 20 tables or so inside, or sit on the patio. . .it looked like they were short staffed with only two waitresses. We choose the patio. . .little chill but nice. It was also so loud inside you would not have been able to talk. The service was slow but we weren't in any hurry. .we ordered several appetizers for dinner and they were all fantastic. . the food was excellent. . our sever was pleasant when we did see her but like I said it looked like they were short staffed. We will definitely be back when we are in town.

Tucked next door to the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in the Hamilton area, this family run restaurant can surprise with good food and friendly service. Noisy inside dining is balanced with a pleasant outdoor patio with heaters, when needed. Sometimes it takes a extra time to get your food if you're with a big group, but the wait can definitely be worth the wait.

A hidden neighborhood spot with good service and mediocre food. It certainly was crowded and friendly and could possibly be a guide date night place if warmer inside and a fresher eclectic menu. Wine list was not as enticing as it's name and the fish tacos were fried and not grilled as stated on menu.

Why oh why didn't I start with the dessert first??? Sexy chocolate gelato with naughty bits of brownies and chocolate chips swirled inside. My GAWD! It was a chocaholic's dream come true. Then the butterscotch cream pie...holy crap. I knew it would be completely inappropriate to rub it all over myself and then lick it off, so I just licked my fork instead and fantasized. ::happy sigh:: For dinner we had salmon with creme fraiche mashed potatoes. Oh, the potatoes! Moist, creamy, perfectly whipped into submission, and drizzled with a citrus-cream-wine sauce. Who knew wine could taste so fabulous with salmon? My friend had a Peruvian stirfry of beef, red onion, tomato, and french fries, and it was perfectly seasoned. I was hesitant at first, but after the first bite, I knew that I would have to get the dish for myself. And for starters? Truffle fries. Now to be honest, the flavor was a bit too subtle for my taste buds. If I get truffle anything, I want to be able to taste the truffle with almost ever bite. However, the essence of the truffle was there taunting me to continue nibbling until I could get to the next pocket of flavor. The service was five stars. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and I had a wonderful time chatting with the owners. All in all, this would be a great date night dinner spot, and I am looking forward to going back for more.

A real find for good eats and a place to meet friends. Great service too. It has a bistro type menu focused in fresh seafood, salads, and wine. Music is tasty and not overwhelming on the large raised deck with trees and garden feel. I am definitely coming back for more.

We have been here many many times and they have consistently poor service. The food is good, decent brunch items, good sandwiches, had a very good fish and chips awhile ago, good gyro, good salads, decent burger, but the service continues to suck. Today, I asked for water three times before getting any. Never once did I get a refill of ice tea without asking random servers (saw our waitress twice - took our order and after asking a random server for our check she finally came and took my cc. I over tipped her 10% as my wife insisted on a tip.) SLOW, SLOW, SLOW , and we were not in a hurry. If the service was great, I'd give a 3.5 or 4.

Located in Hamilton Field, Beso Bistro and Wine Bar is a restaurant I could eat at every week and not get tired of. When I saw "Peruvian" food listed as one of the classifications of this restaurant, I was really intrigued and while the only traditional Peruvian item on the menu I recognized was the "lomo saltado" (strips of sirloin marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and spices, stir fried with red onions, parsley and tomatoes - served with rice and French fries) everything we've tried has been excellent. The fish special we tried was cooked and seasons perfectly, the roasted garlic made for a delicious appetizer and the key lime pie we were lucky enough to try (another special) was fantastic (wasnt too sweet...) Service was attentive, but not pushy...and parking easy. Give the place a try.

I was happy to hear that a new restaurant moved into the space formerly occupied by Hamilton Cafe. I'm even happier that it's just as good! We had our first meal there tonight (there were some Peruvian dishes on the menu but we didn't try them): -roasted garlic with cambozola and tomato currant chutney with crostini -calamari with tartar sauce and cocktail sauce -clam chowder -skirt steak in green peppercorn sauce with baked potato and seasonal veggies -tiramisu Everything was delicious. The garlic appetizer (great combination of ingredients) and the tiramisu (lovely coffee flavor) were particularly topnotch. We asked for the steak to be medium - it was medium rare - but I didn't mind, since it was cooked perfectly. The green peppercorn sauce was scrumptious - great for dipping the potato, though we would have preferred it mashed or roasted rather than whole/baked. The chowder was rich and creamy (we jazzed it up with tabasco which the waiter smartly offered us - guess he could tell we were the spicy types!). The calamari was pretty standard. Prices and portions correspond - both are about average - neither minimal nor excessive. Our meal - we also had wine (me) and beer (my husband) - and our total, before tip, was $70. Service was excellent - our waiter was friendly, attentive, and brought our food promptly. The owner and his wife were there and greeting customers - it was quiet since it was a Monday night - but she said it had been a bustling opening weekend. It didn't look much different from when it had been Hamilton Cafe, but I know they made changes (I'm just not that observant). The ambiance was pleasant. There was a TV with sports on it in the bar area, but it wasn't loud or obtrusive. We will definitely be back, probably with the whole family (they have a kids' menu), and it will be especially nice in the spring when the large, sunny patio area opens. Also, they gave us a coupon for a free dessert for our next visit :)

last week week we made it to Beso for lunch, the food was pretty good. Option one: sit inside the dining room, or outside on the Patio... Hey, I left the office to get outside, so patio it was. I had the fish tacos, nice and tasty. Guac and sour cream on the side. The waitress was fun and friendly. A few minutes into the meal, I felt the ground shake, EARTHQUAKE! I looked at my friend... did you feel that? Yes, me too, a real california earthquake. The waitress walked by, it happend again, and again. I stood up and walked around, another tremor! Turns out, the patio was loose, or unsupported, EVERY TIME THE WAITRESS WALKED BY, IT SHOOK. The first time it was fun, then it was down right pesky. I asked the owner who was sitting at the bar paying bills, "yes the patio shakes", and their was something wrong with it... (they looked into it, and had not done anything about it yet!) such a shame, I would love to come back, the prices were fair, the food was good, but guess I will be eating INSIDE NEXT TIME.......

Last night was my first trip to Beso since it changed owners. Sat out on the deck. I had the Halibut. It was excellent... Pan fried and perfectly cooked and seasoned. C had the seafood skewers and she raved. The chef obviously cares about the perfection of the food he puts out. Nice waitperson too. You will enjoy.

We were all so glad to hear that a new restaurant went in where The Hamilton Café was. We usually come with 10+ of our family and every single one of our meals is FANTASTIC!! That doesn't happen, usually you'll get 1 or 2 great meals and the others are adequate. But at Beso it does happen! Consistently EXCELLENT food!!! The Beso has it ALL!! 1) Fantastic Food! The lamb is a favorite of mine! The garlic fries a must!! 2) Excellent Customer Service (Janine is the very BEST!) 3) Very clean restaurant and tasteful décor!! 4) I almost forgot...the wine is very good!! A lot of nice choices! We usually share a bottle or two!

Absolutely the best fish taco in Northern California. Now onto the rest of the menu, in three words, expansive, inexpensive and wonderful. A relaxing alternative to impersonal chain restaurants. You will love this place.

Got the crab melt for lunch. Was really good but the portion size was too small. I'm still hungry after cleaning the plate out :(. Maybe I will come back but I def won't get a sandwich again

I came here for a work lunch and am looking forward to coming back here for dinner. I enjoyed the calamari and truffled fries, and the salads looked enticing (and that's coming from a hardcore carnivore). I am going to try the fettuccine jambalaya next and I'll get back to you guys on that one.

Just ate at Beso for the first time. What a treat. We will be back, and back often. Good food, great service, convenient parking. Can't wait for good weather to enjoy their outdoor patio. Generous pour of bubbly. What more can one ask.

I had lunch her today and it was my first experience with Beso. We sat outside on the deck which was lovely! I had the chicken BLT & my friend had the fish tacos. We both thought the food was great. I was surprised that they were out of three items and we were there on a Wednesday at 12:00pm. My only complaint was the service. The waitress didn't seem to know what she was doing and the bus people seemed to forget we were sitting there. I look forward to trying Beso for dinner, and hopefully the service will be much much better and they will have all everything on the menu available.

Beso is my new favorite place! I'm sitting here right now, munching on my leftover truffled fries from last night. Even cold, they are quite delicious. We had dinner at Beso on a Tuesday night to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. When we called to make a reservation, they were super accommodating, holding two tables for us: one outside, and one inside in case it was too cold. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and we more or less got to pick whatever table we wanted (it was on the slow side, being a Tuesday evening). I love the decor, it's nice, clean, modern and feels upscale but casual. (It was a nice improvement over the former Hamilton Cafe, which always felt a little cluttered). Perfect balance for a bistro, and it felt open and airy. The patio is nice and spacious with plenty of heat lamps for when it gets cold. My father-in-law had called ahead and told the restaurant he'd like to buy us a bottle of wine, so we spent a long time perusing the wine list. I was impressed by the list - great choices, moderate prices, a majority of the bottled wines were also available by the glass so we got to have a few tastes (We settled on the Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc, which was great!) The dinner menu had a wide variety of choices, and we had a little bit of everything! We started with the Gilroy roasted garlic - a whole bulb of roasted garlic, toast points, creamy, melty cambazola cheese, tomato-raising chutney and a little mixed greens salad. The garlic was roasted to perfection and the chutney was very tasty (I don't even really like chutney, but I loved this). All the flavors melded together really nicely. We also had a Caesar salad, which was well dressed, crisp, and fresh tasting. For dinner, we shared the salmon Napoleon, which we loved. The salmon was cooked nicely, the grapefruit buerra blanc was outstanding, and all in all it was a nicely composed dish that felt indulgent but not gluttonous. We also shared the truffle fries, which were A-mazeballs. So good. I used to work in a restaurant and we'd make them in the kitchen, so these brought back some fond memories. We shared a tiramisu for dessert, and it was everything a good tiramisu should be. The best part of this place was the service! The waitress, manager and bus boy all worked together, chatting with customers, getting drinks, serving food. And they were so friendly and sweet! We got super rockstar VIP treatment, and had a really nice time there. We'll definitely be back! There were lots of other things on the menu we wanted to try, and our waitress also mentioned they'd be adding more Peruvian dishes to the menu.

I am so thrilled with our new neighborhood restaurant, BESO. I just love a restaurant that stays open everyday, enlists lots of fresh organic food and touts a strong wine list from which to pair! Ignacio was very helpful and poured a taste of delicious Pinot Noir for me. The city should give Beso their full support, because this is the sort of central meeting spot that can really connect community and the surrounding areas as well. My recommendation is to go for lunch on the first Sunday of the month, where you can also take in Open Artists Studios in the adjacent buildings. How fun is that?!? It is also a great date location (in my case) as well as good for families. My daughter and I are going for lunch again today: Best part, we can walk!

OK foodies.....Get ready for a real treat. Beso Restaurant in Hamilton formerly "The Hamilton Cafe" Is now owned and operated by Leo who came from a 20 year engagement at The Trident in Sausalito. I have been in Marin since 1972 and have loved the restaurant bus all along. I have had 3 meals there and all 3 have been excellent. Specializing in Seafood with a Peruvian influence the standard/quality was really great. Bouiliabase with a Pernod Saffron twist. Seafood Skewers and the Clam Chowder were all fresh and filling. I look forward to trying more. My prediction is that this will not just be a restaurant for the community but will become a destination once the word gets out. Best to all.....Mark Sterns

Really great wine selection and awesome service! Visiting the area and stopped here for dinner, and so happy we did. Salmon was excellent and had a great time sitting at the bar, chatting with the bartender/server. Definitely would recommend.

I have to say that Beso did not impress me. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this restaurant on a Friday night before going to the "Free Movie" night event. The manager welcomed us and was very polite and inviting, so we decided to check it out the next day. We loved the location and how its set up. We ended up sitting on the outside patio, which was lovely, but here is where the five stars began to go down. We were seated on one of the tables closes to the wood fence, and Im looking around admiring the view when all I can see is spiders, spider webs, bird droppings, etc. I look at my boyfriend and he is noticing the table had not been cleaned properly either. We look at each other wondering how can a restaurant charge for an appetizer $14, but provide no clean setting?? The patio needs to be power wash!! ITS SUMMER!! Keep it clean!! So, anyways, we ended up moving out table away from the fence. We had already looked at the menu and knew what we wanted. We waited for quite some time before the server came to take our order, and when she did she never came back to check in on us. If I go to a restaurant, ANY RESTAURANT, I am not only paying for the food but Im also paying for the service and customer service was definitely not there! Now, getting onto the good stuff... appetizer was really good! We had the crab cakes! I also ordered the lomo saltado which was surprisingly good, but the pasta my boyfriend ordered tasted like the tomatoe sauce came out of a can (sorry to say that if it isnt, but thats what it tasted like). Overall, an average experience which for the price I really do not think it is worth it. I definitely wont be checking it out again and that is really bad because my boyfriend and I have been, and continue to look for our "usual" spot to go to in Novato. Good luck! Besos!

Plus Dessert Menu Food is excellent Plenty of parking across the street Minus: Not easy for people with walkers waiter hard to understand pricey especially for lunch To explain the minus: There are handicap parking spaces and a ramp, but they are located on the other side of a lawn from the restaurant and you have to walk all the way around the lawn to get there. If you don't have a handicap sticker or the spaces are not available, you will probably have to park across the street. Although our waiter was hard to understand, he was pleasant and didn't have any issues understanding us. There were other servers that I could understand clearly. I ordered the dungeness crab melt. The bread was the best part. It was advertised as a lemon pepper brioche. The slices were thick and nicely toasted. I could taste the lemon pepper and loved it. I asked for cheddar cheese in place of the swiss and they were happy to accomodate. I loved the plating. Just the right amount of fries were in a separate container on the plate and I also got some salad (just greens with a lovely sort of sweet vinagrette). I didn't have to choose between fries and being good by having salad instead, I got both. My mom had the lomo saltado which is the only "peruvian" dish on the menu. The meat was really good. I did not like the plating for this dish. The stir fry was placed on top of french fries so the fries were all soggy. The best part was the panna cotta with mango sauce for dessert. I rarely see panna cotta on dessert menus and I love it. The mango sauce was an added attraction. We shared the dessert and were both very pleased. I loved that most of the other dessert options were house made. I want to come back with the hubby for his favorite: key lime pie.

Awesome spot! If I were a local this place would be on the list of regulars for sure. We were on a road trip through the PAC NW. After a long drive down the 101 we ended our last day in Novato before flying out of SFO. We found this place on Yelp and while it was a little hard to find - the FOOD AND SERVICE are top notch! We started with some wine and beer and the selections were good and the server offered a few wine tastes before selecting a glass which was nice. We started with the mussels and truffle fries both were very good - the broth was a nice white wine/butter base that was so perfect for dipping bread/fries etc. On to the main course - we had the blackened salmon salad. It was loaded with fresh fruits and probably one of the best pieces of salmon I've ever tasted - cooked to perfection - not overcooked at all. We finished with a dessert wine - chocolate/hazelnut cake and their key lime pie - both very different tastes but both were delicious. Service, food and ambiance were all great - when and if we're in town again Beso is a must stop!

What a great place for lunch or dinner. The food was great and the service was better. You can sit in the deck or inside. I had a great burger and my wife had tacos. Would recommend to any if my friends.

What a find. Hidden in side the Hamilton Field Development. Split an order of crab cakes with my wife. SO good, ordered another round. Had lunch , sat outside. Very pleasant. The wine list is lacking in high quality wines. Service was excellent. They are new and I am afraid that the word will spread and will need to wait half an hour next time.

Our group was lucky enough to stumble upon Beso for lunch and were so pleasantly surprised to find the most charming patio restaurant nestled in a glorious garden spot complete with overhanging apple tree bursting with fruit! We started with hot, crisp and crunchy calamari with three wonderful dipping sauces and the local cheese tray with honey, roasted garlic and candied pecans. The cheese was at room temperature - perfect! - and the trio of selections were a nice balance of creamy and sharp! We followed with amazing fish tacos that were presented beautifully, a hearty and delicious chicken BLT and the scrumptious crab melt. We decided we could not pass on the homemade desserts and were not disappointed! We had the pavlova complete with whipped cream and strawberries along with the trio of creme brûlée - chocolate, vanilla and passion fruit and the key lime pie - all superb! Last but not least the COFFEE! - european delight - rich, fresh and so smooth! We asked - and they get the coffee from a local roaster! Everything from the friendly service to the delightful ambience was outstanding - Don't miss this restaurant!!!

Okay, so a friend and I tried out Beso for the first time a few days ago. We sat outside and immediately felt the 'ground shake' because of their unstable patio. We did our best to over look it since it was such a lovely day and we wanted to enjoy our lunch. The waitress (stocky, red hair) was unfriendly and sort of odd. She gave one word answers and seemed way too introverted to be in a waitress job. We couldn't even find her when it was time to pay. There was no connection at all. The crab melt sandwich was just okay. It was visually unappealing when it arrived in this 'brick' of a sandwich and it never got any better in taste. My friends dish was similarly mediocre. The place is cute inside. If I were the owner I'd get new 'enthusiatic and fun' wait staff, fix the shaky patio and refine the menu. When that happens we'll give it another shot.

We had lunch at Beso today and we both ordered the fish tacos---dare I say--they are the best in Marin--for sure, they are the best in Novato. I'm looking forward to al fresco dining on Beso's deck.

Last night my wife, two sons (ages 4 & 7) and I had dinner for the first time at the recently opened Beso Bistro & Wine Bar. We are pleased to have a restaurant again in this location, since the closure of the Hamilton Cafe, and thrilled that it is good! My wife and I ordered the steamed mussels, butter lettuce salad, and lomo saltado. If you have not tried lomo saltado, you must! This was a favorite dish of ours from a Peruvian restaurant in S.F. called Fresca. And this meal alone will keep us coming back to Beso. The other items were very good as well. Can't wait to try the bouillabaisse and the fettuccini jambalaya. In the way of constructive criticism, I would strongly suggest that Beso expand their kids' menu and adjust some of the prices. It is wonderful that they do have items just for the little guys, and they were tasty (I was happy to finish everything that the kids did not). However, the selections at the time of our visit included only pizza, mac-n-cheese, and chicken tenders plus sides of fries or fruit. And prices for kids' drinks and ice cream scoops were $3 and $4 respectively. For our family to return there on a regular basis, the kids need to like going there and the kids' meals need to be relatively inexpensive. I recommend Beso add a grilled cheese and a pair of mini-burgers to the menu, and drop the drink and ice cream prices by $1 each. This would put most meals-plus-drink under the magic $10 mark, and just over if adding dessert. Broccoli or some other green vegetable as an additional side would also be welcome. There are several places in town that will feed the kids for five or six dollars each, including a drink (BJ's, Pasta Pomodoro, etc.). Granted this place is nicer and closer to us, but if it is not a great value overall with the kids - and they don't demand that we bring them - then we will mostly just come for adult dinners and not bring the whole family. And this will result in our coming much less often. I think it is important, from a business standpoint, for Beso to attract families. Many or most of the neighboring households are families with young children, and though little kids probably don't do much for the profit margin they do accompany their parents, who are likely to eat more and order a beer or glass of wine with dinner (families also tend to get in and get out quickly). Near its end, the former Hamilton Café would be mostly filled in the evenings with the local retirees. Love retirees and am planning to be one myself someday. But I think for the success of the business as well as the enjoyment of the broader community a more blended clientele should be promoted. We are excited that Beso is here! The service staff were very nice too and we can't wait to explore the weekend breakfast and lunch menus!

great location, almost old LA feel, palm trees, mission architecture. comfy open space, with an inviting outdoor deck. service was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. I was accommodated for my seating request. food was served promptly and tastefully. above all the food was delicious and full of personality. with out a doubt I will totally go back.

had dinner there since it changed from Hamilton café. was good experience. waitress very attentive, hostess/owner stopped by each table as did the chef. kind of nice to see they really care to get feedback. limited menu in my opinion. had the burger, fettuchini, capellini, chicken piccata and steak. portion sizes all good except for the steak which was really small for the price. it should have been double the size. the sides were good and tasty as well. will go back but staying away from the steak.

Great food. The chef has years of experience at Horizons in Sausalito which is now called the Trident. We love to sit at the bar to have dinner. The food, service, and atmosphere is always excellent. It is our new favorite spot.

We were so excited to try this new restaurant. However, we ordered soup and garlic bread in addition to entrees. After 20 minutes we see the couple in the next table who arrived after us served our soup and garlic bread. We asked the server where our soup and bread were. He looked confused. After 10 more minutes our waitress came over finally to check on us. We had no soup and no bread. We left. We never do that. However, our waitress was very inattentive to our table. We were very disappointed and went somewhere else.

First a personal opinion. When we go to a small restaurant the expectation (and hope) is we will experience something different. We are always anxious to see the vision of the owner. The distance between owner and patron is quite close and you ask...how did they put this restaurant together...what is their philosophy...are they present...do they care...what is their attention to detail...is there soul and inspiration here. In every category the answer is an emphatic yes! This is a small intimate bistro. I don't know how small but maybe 10 or 12 tables (and, weather permitting) an outside deck. The restaurant was under a different owner. As an aside, while the Hamilton Cafe (previous name) was well known beyond the community it was also an incredible asset to the people who live in Southern Novato. The cafe was closed for about a year and we were curious who the new owners were and what new ideas would they bring to the cafe. They have done a wonderful job. The bistro is located in a relatively new vibrant community called Hamilton in Novato. Beso's has been opened for a few weeks and we have been there twice. Each time quality food...service...warmth and hospitality by the entire staff were certainly present. The chef is the co-owner along with his wife who was there both times as host. We are anxious for warmer weather so we could eat outside on their deck. We will be regular diners. This is the case where a community asset has been reborn and will be bring much joy and great food to locals and the whole Bay Area. Thank you Beso's!
