Had a nice lunch there. Very good burger with crunchy toasted bun, My wife had the French dip which was tasty but the meat was dry ( hard to find a good French dip in northern CA) Do yourself a favor and read the menu on paper. The overhead menu seems to highlight coffee drinks and veggie items.

Fabulous service, the food is reasonably priced and the cafe is adorable. I'm all about individually owned business and this establishment embodies it. Local art, community event information and a perfect location to meet and eat.

Solid local coffee shop. Pros: --good coffee, friendly staff, good food options. -- free WiFI - but its public. -- LOTS of seating. -- better than going to a Starbucks. Cons: --Not many outlets for cords. -- kind of cold, bring a sweater.

Great little cafe. Friendly staff and very family friendly. Great place to stop by and have a nice lunch, coffee or beverage with friends. Definitely a must if you have never been!

There once was a pregnant girl who craved a veggie sandwich.. She yelped and yelped until she found a perfect shop with a perfect description of a perfect sandwich. Deva, you had me at grilled portabella.. or was it mushroom or the avocado.. Heck it could've been the roasted red pepper, tomato, Jarlsberh cheese or the herb mayo! Idk but it was absolutely delicious!! It was exactly as I imagined but most importantly it satisfied my craving. HAPPY!

Never again!! Went for breakfast this Sunday and was not impressed. The portions are small and overpriced - especially painful when the food is mediocre at best and service is bad. Although the place was almost empty, it took over 20 minutes for our food to come out, then, the toast was cold, eggs were cold and the potatoes not fully cooked. The jam was great but not enough for the cold toast. Never again!!

Their omelettes make me happy. It also makes me a better person in general. Their coffees are great. The staff is amazing. But really, their omelettes make me happy! :D

Thank you Devas for offering the best veggie burger in town! I've tried many sandwiches, all very delicious and a mimosa over breakfast is the best way to start the day! The prices are reasonable but worth every penny. The only bummer is they close mid afternoon. Sometimes my pallet wants to enjoy their foods later in the day... I love bringing my friends here and introducing them to Devas delicious food. Thanks again guys :)

Called in my order at 10:50. It's 11:28 and I'm STILL waiting. 38 minutes for a freaking sandwich? And there are only two customers? Won't be wasting my time here again.

Great food for breakfast and lunch. Always freshly cooked and fresh tasting. The coffee is great and there is always a good beer or two on tap. The local art and music scene is well represented. I love coming here on Sunday mornings and enjoying the live music. Not to mention the owners are great! Very friendly and always working hard to provide a unique dining choice in downtown Modesto.

My daughter and I regularly come here Saturday mornings for white mischief coffee (freakin yum) and build your own omelets. Great customer service and never disappointed with the food. We always leave here very satisfied and this is our favorite coffee shop/breakfast spot hands down.

Great breakfast and good coffee. My sister recommended this place and was spot on with the choice. Their breakfast is the perfect price and would go there again when I visit family. There coffee that is out for everyone could be a little warmer but that is my only complaint. I would love to go back and tey their lunches.

Afternoon in Downtown Modesto for business + Rumbly in my tumbly + Recommendation from a friend + Rockstar parking + Nearly empty cafe - Kinda annoying patrons ahead of me + Sweeter than sweet counter clerk + Delicious display of savories and sweets + Decadent Chicken Salad Sandwich (Diced Breast of Chicken, Herb Mayo, Pine Nuts, Celery, topped with Pesto on Fresh Bread) + Deva Pasta Salad (Fresh Basil, Garlic, Olive Oil, Parmesan Cheese & Roasted Pine Nuts) + Chocolate Chunk Cookie (I couldn't help myself lol) + A frantic drive home = A blissful lunch, happy tummy and urge to go back sooner rather than later!!!!!

Why is this my first visit here?!?! I love this place, the coffee is almost too pretty to drink, I repeat, almost! I had enough tasty jam for my toast. Breakfast was awesome, made to order omelet or scramble! Service people were/are sweethearts. This is my new favorite place! Live music, I might just spend the whole day here!

I absolutely love this place. I eat the euphoria with pesto pasta every time. I often go with a different friend every time and they are always impressed with the menu variety, price and taste. They also serve coffee. I haven't ordered a coffee before but some of my friends have. They enjoyed them very much. I'd recommend Devas to everyone. It's my favorite cafe!!

    (5)
  • Jonna P.

I love Deva Cafe! Some of my favorites are pesto pasta, ahi tuna sandwich, clam chowder, taco soup, Ty's Toss, Shanna's Fave, and the Cajun chicken wrap. Ohh and can't forget the Mango Iced Tea!! Love the patio and relaxing in the side room.

Meh. Went for breakfast a few weeks ago and was not impressed. The portions are small and overpriced - especially painful when the food is mediocre at best and service is bad. Although the place was almost empty, after we paid and sat down, it took over 20 minutes for our eggs to come out, and then, the toast was cold and the eggs barely warm. The only thing really tasty was the home-made jam. Sadly, they only provided a smattering of it. It comes in a quarter-sized round that once extracted, covers about one half of one slice of toast.

THE PORTABELLA! My favorite sandwich of all sandwiches! MMMMMM, they have great coffee, pasta, salads, soups, etc. The staff is nice and the place has a relaxing atmosphere.

Went in with a restaurant.com certificate on my phone and was told by owner that she does not deal with restaurant.com anymore so I told her that is fine. ...I will pay full price. So owner starts raising her voice in front of her patrons that she does not take it again. ...so again I said "don't worry about it I will just pay full price" so owner started yelling again ..."Where did you get it"....and I say "through restaurant.com". So owner yells out "I won't take it"...I say "fine I would like to order pls" owner starts talking very loudly now telling me how much she hates restaurant.com .....I say...."can I pls order?" Owner than says "would you like to know what they did to me?" I say "not really. ...I just want to order" Owner looks frustrated because I won't hear her out....I tell her "don't worry...I will pay...can I order?"....owner finally gets it and takes my order and then keeps going on about how much she hates restaurant.com and that she is sorry that she won't honor the certificate. ...I say "no worries. ...I will just call restaurant.com for a refund.. owner than says "I will honor the certificate " REALLY?!!? :/ I think the owner should not cater to customers.

During the day a nice friendly, relaxing place to have a salad or a sandwich... im not vegetarian but their veggie burger with the mango mayo and ciabatta is delicious. the vincent toss salad is always good...and some mango ice tea makes a great lunch. at night, they sometimes clear out the main room of chairs and host local music nights...my friend used to organize one, and i would DJ inbetween bands. Ive seen allot of really good local music there, so its also a nice little venue as well as a good lunch place. owner is super nice too.

Overall this place is great , I've had many sandwiches here but my ultimate fav is the Euphoria . This place is clean and the food is fresh . Only downfall is that it closes at 3 .

Great place for breakfast. I love the build your own scramble. Every time we go here we always see friends, coworkers, etc. We have even moved out of Modesto but when we are back in town visiting this is one of the places we enjoy going.

Over Rated Overly Rude If the band my son is in wasn't playing there, I would have never gone. Gave it a try and was treated rudely by the counter girl, when I ordered Bud Light. I had forgotten my I.D. I am 42 and I understand the law. However, she rudely told me to go someplace else. When my son's band went off, I did. I frequent many of the establishment downtown and had only heard blah blah blah about this place. Effffffffffff this joint.

The portobello sandwich was amazing! And the pesto pasta salad side is really tasty. Order ahead because it gets packed during lunch time!

Went here with a friend for a quick bite and loved the vibe right away. Lots of options on the menu - I went with the chicken salad sandwich (and a chocolate chip cookie) and it was an amazing choice. Their pesto is on the sandwich and on the pasta salad is so fresh! Loved that they support local artists as well. My friend who has been here several times said she always gets the veggie burger because it's "just that good". Awesome food - super friendly staff!

Well folks, I'm torn. From the outside, this looks like it's going to be a cute chic little place to eat. But once your inside, it looks worn down, and uncomfortable. The seating is open, and feels crowded as people walk in-between tables to get around in the place. There was only one party ahead of me in line (2 gentlemen), and it still took about 10 minutes to get my order taken. There was only one lady working the register/taking orders, and taking food to tables. She would ignore the people in line to order, as she took order after order to waiting tables. She then took the order of the gentlemen in front of me, and promptly went back to bringing food to tables while I continued to wait for my order to be taken. All I wanted was a sammie! Mind you, this was at 12 pm, a high lunch service time. When she did get to me, she was very friendly, if not a little slow and confused. I had to say my order 4 times... Turkey, on wheat, with only lettuce and avocado. She kept looking at her notepad as if she didn't know how to write that. The food, once it arrived, was fresh and delicious. The turkey was thick-sliced and the avocado ripe. You can see why I'm torn. You think it is going to be cute and chic, to discover it's a little hole in the wall inside. Then the service is quite slow, but the food is delicious and brought to your table. The mango iced tea was fresh, and tasty. I did have to get up to get my own napkin, and there was only one left at the counter. The price was pretty ridiculous. $8.50 for a sandwich, or %7.75 for a half sandwich. Really? .75 cents? That's super shady. Obviously no one is going to go for a half sandwich, prompting people to pay full price for a whole. And while the sandwiches come with a choice of small green salad or potato salad, she did not let me sub a bag of chips. I paid full price without the side. Too pricy. Delicious. Expensive. Old. You decide.

This is my 10 year old daughter's favorite place to eat. I think the clam chowder and being able to play checkers, does it for her. I love their mango iced tea and other favorites of mine are the Cajun chicken wrap and their Philly sandwich. I decided to try their raspberry/white chocolate scone..covered in powdered sugar! Mmmm... I was disappointed when the old owners sold their business and didn't return for awhile. The food wasn't as good and prices were higher.. Now that I've returned, I see that it's as good as it always was. I'm still not happy about the prices, but that hasn't stopped me from going back. Just not as often as I'd like. The quality of service varies, but good overall. I like the atmosphere and they offer a small area for outside seating.

Cute and simple mom and pop sandwich shop. I will always go to these types of places over a chain any day. The decor is simple, the service rather laid back, and the sandwiches are what you could expect. They have a selection of coffees/teas, and a sandwich board. Nothing super special, BUT it is cute and small business owned. . . I am sure they do well during the work week lunch hours. I am happy to patronize them.

Wish these 2 ladies understood having HOT coffee is part of enjoying a coffee shop! I like this place & the food is good! Damn it get good hot coffee in the pots all the time! Someone else tell too ;)

My first time at deva I had an amazing chicken salad sandwich and salad with vinaigrette. I thought I had found my new favorite sandwich place. However, the second time I went the chicken salad sandwich was runny, the bread was dry, and the portion wasn't as big as the first time I went. The salad also had absolutely no flavor :(

  • Betty G.

Good coffee, good food, good atmosphere. Great place to go with a little one - they have a real changing table in the ladies' room! It can get pretty darn hot in the summer though.

  • Amber E.

I dig this place. The food is tasty and there is live music occasionally. The seating arrangement could be a bit better, but overall its a nice place to grab a sandwich.

Now this is a real great place to eat. The food is superb, along with the prices, atmosphere and anything else you want. Reminds me of the old beatnik coffee houses back in the sixties. OOPS Oh well, so what if I'm dated. The thing is if you want good food at good prices, friendly people and great atmosphere go to Deva's, oh, and while your there you just have to try the Vincent's toss salad, it's to kill for, and when your done with that try the bread pudding with raspberry sauce. You won't be sorry.

  • Stephanie W.

I love Cafe Deva! The mango iced tea is absolutely amazing. I had the veggie burger and it was so delicious, I was actually speechless! It's such a cute little place, super clean, and the outdoor area is superb on a nice day. They often host bands and different local talents. What a great place for breakfast or lunch....and they serve beer, which totally makes it even better!

  • Jennifer M.

Fresh and Funky! The food is healthy but in an upbeat way... Grub is real hip and fresh, not old school, even though it does have the hippie granola feel... only in atmosphere! My favorite thing about this place is it is different, delicious and healthy... when I feel like I have been eating too much junkie food, I go to Deva's to balance it all out =) makes me feel ALIVE to eat the Portabello Mushroom Sandwich! And the Vincent's Toss Salad is my other favorite =D It is also hearty enough to satisfy my lumber jack husbands appetite and that makes this a great place to venture off to on occasion.

The hamburgers are amazing. Probably the best that I've found-and I've tried a LOT of different burger joints over the past few years. The ingredients are unbelievably fresh and the patty is always juicy. I honestly miss living in Modesto because of this burger! Downers: They don't serve anything that's fried. There's just something wrong with eating a hamburger with green salad on the side. Their sodas are awful. Something about their Coke doesn't taste right. Fortunately they have a few beers on tap, so you can just avoid the soda.

I love this place : ) The serendipity burger is amazing! I also like their garden salad. wonderful service and very friendly.

  • Karen G.

I adore Deva's! I've been coming here for years. I love the veggie burger. It has a mango mayonnaise that is so tasty. My favorite dessert is the bread pudding with raspberry sauce. I despise raisins and this is one of the few bread puddings that does not have raisins. The mango ice tea is so refreshing and a must have. You know it is popular because it is contained in a huge dispenser on the front counter. The salads are excellent. I also enjoy coming here on Sundays for breakfast. They have really tasty crepes with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Delicious! It has a fun coffee house atmosphere in the downtown area. I love the little room off of the main area because it can get a little noisy near the counter. My only complaint is that they close at 3:00pm. I wish they were open for dinner!

Come for breakfast before 11, and then order from the lunch menu after 11. Breakfast includes egg dishes, omelettes, scrambles, waffles, oatmeal, etc. Lunch includes the sandwiches and salads. They allow you to choose up to 5 ingredients for either your omelette or scramble - I choose an omelette with basil, mushrooms, onion, spinach...and one other veggie that I can't remember! The omelette tasted fresh and light, but was slightly undercooked *one part of the omelette was really runny and looked like mixed egg whites and yolk when it's about 50% cooked. You have your choice of toast, I got a slice of thick wheat which comes pre buttered with a side of a light orange colored jam (I couldn't tell but it tasted like apricot). The home fries are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and salted just right. My friend's strawberry and whipped cream covered belgian waffle looked great! Plus is that the outside area seems relatively dog friendly, so bring your small dog! Food took quite a while to come out, but the place wasn't super busy, not sure why.

  • Nick L.

Okay, so breakfast here isn't all that exciting, in fact it's pretty boring. The coffee is good but they only have two brews most of the time. The prices are a little on the high end, while the portions are a little on the small end. Personally I'd rather go to Perko's. Lunch however, is a different situation. Though the menu is limited, but the food is fairly unique and quite good. The mango iced tea is awesome, as is the pesto pasta salad, and just about every specialty sandwich they make. Prices are fair, and portions are just right. If you have a good appetite, you probably won't go home with a doggy bag, but you won't leave hungry either. Deva's is a must for anyone looking for someplace new to lunch. The worst thing about Deva Cafe is their location! Downtown Modesto. Parking usually sucks, so prepare to walk a block or two if you get there during lunch rush or on a weekend. Oh yeah, and they also close at 3pm on weekdays.

One of the great places that I miss about Modesto (they're still there, I am not). Deva's has great food, and the cutest little vibe. Hand-painted tables, modern and local art hanging on the walls, it has a huge seating area with a bar at the very end with a semi-open kitchen where you give your order. Very, very cute. The prices never bothered me here, I'm surprised to see to many reviews stating that the menu is overpriced. Pretty much anything you order is going to be delicious. I highly recommend the portabello burger or the turkey sandwich - simple choices that are jazzed up with avocado and a strange almost cayenne pepper mayo - I can't really describe it because I haven't had it in a long time, but it's delicious, try it out. Very cute place, and it's located right next to an antique store (the name of which I can't remember), so you can relax, have a coffee or a beer, and then head over for some unique antiques.

Kind of pricey for a cafe that is geared more towards quick lunch "sandwich cafe", you order at the counter then take your seat. I paid about $14 for my whole meal (sandwich, side salad, iced tea). I don't eat here often but when I do, my go- to is the Decadent Chicken Salad sandwich with a Mango Iced Tea. Cafe is cute, decorated with artwork.

I have been eating at Deva for years. Great Portobello sandwich and salads. Love the Mango iced tea! Staff are great.

  • David S.

The word cafe makes you think it's a place for coffee. I would not recommend Deva for coffee. However, their sandwiches are fantastic. The two that I love are the meatloaf and the Euphoria. Both sandwiches come on focaccia bread which one of the owners told me that they bake themselves. I have had many of the things on the menu for both breakfast and lunch and I'm never disappointed. They can't really make a latte, but they sure do fill you up with great food.

  • Brandy L.

Yum so good. I love the portabello mushroom sandwich. Soooooo delicious. I wish parking was easer. The street is usually all full so I have to walk several blocks to get there, but it is worth it.

  • Kaila U.

Good coffee, but terrible service. I ordered a cold turkey sandwich and literally waited 25 minutes. For a COLD turkey sandwich. And I was the only customer! After ten minutes or so I went to the counter and ask about my sandwich and the girl gave me the most annoyed face and a snotty answer. I might go back someday for the hazelnut vanilla coffee, but I'll be skipping the 8$ sandwiches for sure.

My favorite place to eat downtown for lunch. The atmosphere is very cool and hipster. I recomend the vegatarian sandwhich. Its a large portion they give as well. Pretty pricey tho.

I just don't get the Deva hype. I've yet to try lunch there, and maybe that's their ultimate saving grace. Who knows! I do know that the husband and I felt mighty ripped off for breakfast. $20 for two BREWED coffees, an egg plate and a bagel. Yeah. It wouldn't have been so bad if the food was just tdf. It wasn't. Also the fact that they charged $3.50 for a piece of ham the size of a business card was a bit of a mood killer. The coffee was excellent, though it was just a fancy brew. I didn't spring for a mocha or latte. The wheat toast was good, I'm guessing home made bread, maybe? I really wanted to like this place, reminds me of a little cafe we go to in Monterey, and I'm all about a local business. Unfortunately this place just fell short.

The vibe is fun, enjoy the beverages and the food is wonderful..

  • Mari D.

I love the food.... I just don't understand why they're so stingy with the pasta salad... It's not like it's expensive and it's not like the price of my sandwich is inexpensive??? I would eat there much more often if this was not the case.

    (3)
  • Marian G.

Love this place! Such a fun lil atmosphere. The art up on the walls is so interesting and for sale, for any art lovers. I will say that it is a tad bit pricey, but the food is great, so you get what you pay for I guess! They also had some delicious sweet tea, definitely try it!

    (4)
  • Matthew R.

This place is not bad, but the hype left the experience, meh... I had brunch on Saturday and was rushed off by the wait staff. The food was okay, but the greasiness of my eggs did not sit well in the stomach. Enough said regarding that. I think there is some thoughtfulness to the atmosphere, but when I paid $15 bucks in Modesto, it better give me more than a Modesto experience. Eggs, toast, and orange juice. Not going back. Going to Queen Bee down the road.

I was so excited to eat here. I had a bunch of coupons from Restaurant.com , and thought I'd take the wife out to lunch. The menu was great, lots to choose from, everything sounded wonderful. For a chicken salad, veggie burger, and ice tea, it was $16, and that was with a $10 off coupon, seems very high to me, I'd be pissed if I had to pay $26 plus tip for this meal. The babe who brought us out our food must have been having a bad day or needed a cigarette cause she seemed upset with something, not very friendly. But the food, it was GREAT! But come on, give me more, especially with San Francisco prices, we left there hungry. I wanted to love the Deva, I really did, but unfortuneatly, will not be back.. Beautiful art in the place though!

I LOVE Deva Cafe. I was friends with "Deva" back when her parents owned the place, and even though the cafe has switched management everything is still way delicious, and maybe even more so than before! Deva is a great place for breakfast, and also super fun for a casual lunch. The oatmeal is FANTASTIC! It seems strange to order oatmeal from a restaurant, but Deva knows how to make a great bowl of the oatty goodness. It comes with brown sugar, raisins, toast, and house-made preserves. I seriously crave this on a daily basis. I'm going to have to disagree with kendy p. who found the prices a little expensive...I'm not sure how a restaurant would be able to survive without having items be at least five bucks or more. And the kind of patron who would prefer a Denny's to a locally-owned and operated cafe...well, they don't belong at Deva anyway. So enjoy your greasy grand slam, while I enjoy my chai tea latte and fresh blueberry muffin and listen to local artists (who perform here on a pretty regular basis).

This place is AMAZING & vegetarian friendly! So far I've had their breakfast crepes, the veggie burger (the mango mayo on it is great), the veggie del sol, and both the Deva and Provence pasta salads. I clean my plate every time I go, haha. Try the mango tea- it so refreshing and delicious. I don't eat much meat, but my mom said their euphoria chicken sandwich was delicious. The service was prompt and friendly and the atmosphere is cool. They have interesting artwork on the walls and the people there are chill. I highly recommend having lunch here. I recently found out they have a menu online at: dineatdeva.com

Is it me or does the coffee have a bad after taste - almost like pickles? 9 out of 10 times the coffee is cold. Oatmeal is $5 a bowl? A small stack of waffles is $7ish (toaster oven waffles!). Denny's is right down the street serving the same stuff (not that I go to Denny's) and I bet the coffee does not taste like pickles. Also most days they close at 3PM...Way to keep down town busy! The only reason there is a star up there is it features local artist, support local arts! Also the staff gets a big thumbs down for being unprofessional and rude!

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I can count on them to be consistent. I've been a fan of the Portabello Sandwich for a long time, though I order Cheddar Cheese instead of the Jarlsberg I think is usually used. The Garlic Aoli makes the sandwich unike anyone else's! I don't eat meat though I do eat Seafood and recently tried the Ahi Sandwich! OMG! I've now had it 3 times in the past 6 weeks! The sourdough roll is delicious and all the flavors together are so yummy! The sandwich is filling enough for two meals! Suggestion: I'd love an a side of lightly creamy citrus coleslaw. It's worth it even without it though! I dream about both these sandwiches when I've gone away from Deva for too long. The peanut butter cookies are great too! Bon Appetite!

I give it a C, for breakfast. My wife and I both had the omelet breakfast and coffee with a single shot of espresso each. Came to $27.00 with $3.00 tip. The red potatoes tasted like dirt. Literally! My wife's did too. Neither of us could eat them and had to spit them out, and we're not picky snooty eaters either. The omelet itself was good, but small. Coffee was excellent though. The service was better than the previous visit when we were made to feel like we were putting them out for placing an order; and we've yet to be greeted with a smile. The breakfast is too pricey for what you get. Maybe the lunch is better, I don't know.

Deva has been one of my semi-regular downtown lunch spots since I started working downtown. I always walk there from my office which is great! They offer traditional food with a unique twist. Their sandwiches are given clever names like the "decadent chicken salad" or the "Serendipity burger" and my personal favorite...the "Euphoria". I can only imagine how they dubbed it the Euphoria... ;) ANd my vegetarian friend SWEARS by their Portabella Mushroom sandwich. They also serve breakfast which would be great to utilize if I'm actually not running late someday. I won't hold my breath. I also frequented the use of their outdoor tables a lot to study with a beverage on my breaks between classes at MJC. Sometimes that beverage was one of their amazing cups of coffee, or their passion iced tea...and sometimes it was a tall cool pint of beer. Either way, I always enjoyed that :) The only reason I knock off a star is because they have the most random hours! On more than several occasions I have had the whim to stop in for a bite and they've been closed.

Came here because people yelped it as having good vegan options. First impression, not true. I haven't gotten my food yet, but I order the porobello sandwich. We'll see how it gos.

Euphoria is da bomb! Yummy sun dried tomatoes, foccacia bread and all the other yummyness inside. The pasta salad was a little tasteless, liked the mango iced too, and the FREE refills. Great tables with an art gallery to look at too. Yay for supporting local artists!

seriously, this place is my favorite. i tried breakfast there a few times, it's nothing especially amazing. the crepes were alright but it wasn't memorable. didn't go there again until a few years later. i have no clue why i didn't try lunch here earlier. veggie burger- amazing. veggie del sol- amazing. deva pasta- amazing. this is one of those places that makes me happy to be a vegetarian, rather than curse myself. the bread they use for the sandwiches are from a bakery in Monterey or something of that sort, and it is DELICIOUS. aside from the amazing food, the owner is a lovely lady. great atmosphere, great vibe, really great food. my favorite lunch spot in town hands down.

They are yet to disappoint! The Ahi Sandwich is the best sandwich I've ever had. Whenever I go I try to alternate between that and something new. I have never been disappointed with trying something else. The Portabello sandwich taste like delicious pizza, then there was the meatloaf sandwich, deva-pasta, Taco soup, and pesto pasta!!! Once I mahke my way around the menu- I will come back and do it again!!!

Amazing food! I love the sandwiches here! In my opinion, a bit pricey for sandwiches, but totally worth it. My fav is the south philly, but they all rock!

Great place for after a movie or a great sandwhich. Good pasta too! Really nice staff, good service. Love their Ice tea, very pleasant atmosphere at night. Don't forget the desserts.

Came here by sheer coincidence because I visited the very expensive "fake" antiquey store next door. Anyway, I ordered a turkey sandwich on marble rye with a cup of their minestrone soup and a Mexican hot chocolate. The food was so tasty and fresh! I am glad I found this place and I will definitely go there again if I find myself downtown Modesto. Also, I do have to also mention the fast and extremely friendly service.I enjoyed the ambiance and art on the walls.

First the good: Everybody I know is crazy about this place, so I think I must just have really bad luck (which is why I'm throwing in an extra half star, out of loyalty to people I like and trust). I They support local music and all ages music enjoyment. Which is wonderful and gets them another half start. The base two-star rating comes from the lack of table service and the prices. I've waited in line here fo 20 minutes just to get coffee and a scone. Now, I'm a huge fan of Concetta across the street, and I shop at Ross...which means I can do some waiting in lines. That said, it is one thing to wait at a table with a drink in your hand and friends or your laptop in front of you, but quite another to wait in a dead-still line jonesin' for caffine. I've walked out of there more times than I've stuck around. If it was cheaper I might put up with the lack of table service...chalk it up to the dive experience. But Deva has this kind of European vibe and prices that your average college student can't afford....so why not get some table service so people can actually go there for a one hour lunch?

Went to a benefit for Autism here last week and was very impressed. It's a very modern and welcoming place that has coffee and wine. What a great combo!

Hadn't been here in AGES and never had tried the breakfast, so this seemed the time to seize an opportunity. We put in our order, which included OJ, and the cashier proceeded to shake and pour some wonderful reconstituted orange juice (mixed with water) right in front of us. I felt like demanding back the odd $5 that we paid for 2 OJs but I let bygones be bygones this time and sat down. The food came very quickly and was met with furrowing of the eyebrows. $8.50 for some very narrow and small crepes. Basically it was just a wrap with some fruit in it. Okie dokie. Let's look across the table and see how my girlfriend fared: oh. It's one Belgian waffle - not ginormous, not exactly tiny. Doesn't appear to be worth $8. Oh well, let us sup and decide. Meh. My taste buds didn't scream in joy or disdain - it was just average. $26 all in all. The atmosphere is off the chart but I would recommend getting a coffee here and chilling instead of a meal.

I have lived in Modesto for over five years now.....why did it take me so long to find this place?! Amazingly flavorful, FRESH, reasonably priced food. Great service!

Love this place! This is the best place in town to get a great homemade breakfast on a Saturday morning. The staff is friendly, the coffee is off the hook and the iced tea is even better! Be prepared to wait a long time for your food, though (last time we waited for almost an hour and they weren't even close to full capacity)! But every bite is worth the wait! The best part is that eating here is like not even being in Modesto!

i had a delicious sandwich for lunch -- warm spring veggies with pesto pasta salad. the cheese was really melty and everything had great flavor. sometimes i'm jealous of all the meat options places serve, but veggie options like this make that a thing of the past. it cost about $10, which is a little more than i wanted to spend but the portions are big. i think i have enough left for dinner. if you got a drink, though it would definitely take it over $10. i agree that it's a little slow -- call ahead and pick up, is my suggestion, if you're in a hurry. it's a nice atmosphere with free wifi internet. closes at 3 pm most days, i think she said.

This trendy sidewalk style café complete with art for sale on the walls and gay friendly neon beer sign DOES NOT have wifi. That is a major hit in my book; one that I suspected would be nearly impossible to recover from. I ordered a large iced Americano and a turkey sandwich with a side salad. The service was prompt and friendly. My coffee was good with a nice full flavor, but it could have been a bit stronger and a lot bigger. The simple looking turkey sandwich was very tasty. The homemade sourdough bread was tender and paired well with the turkey fixings, but lacked any definable sour flavor--still it was good. The side salad, also simple in composition, got the job done nicely. The option of champagne dressing was a delightful surprise. The clientele was surprising to me as it was mostly parents with their teen aged kids. I was expecting a more hipster vibe (maybe there are no hipsters DT at noon) given it was a Saturday and the business crowd would be out of the area. Parking, as expected, was a breeze. All and all the food was good, but the lack of wifi is just mind blowing to me. No wifi--really, REALLY! I also felt the prices were a touch on the steep side. The food did an amazing job of pulling my rating up from the 1 star I was expecting to award Deva Café. My rating is 2 stars.

Deva is a classic in Modesto. It has nurtured a love of coffee in two generations of Modestans. It serves a decent cup of Joe, has a standard selection of pastries and drinks, and an artsy atmosphere. The walls are adorned with locally produced art. The seating is clean and diverse. It's a great place for breakfast and lunch - if you have the time. Deva also hosts Latin dancing, which a lot of Baby Boomers-age folks attend.

Love this place! A good local coffee shop/eatery. The owner and staff work hard to provide good service. Good coffee, good food, and good wines! Their wine selection is better than that of many restaurants in the area. This place is good for everything from morning to night, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a cup of coffee. Have also enjoyed live music there on some nights.

Cool little place. The food and coffee are both very good. They often have good local music too. This is a great place for a lunch date.

Deva is fantastic! Friends and I used to go here a lot for coffee or lunch. The atmosphere is nice, the food and drinks are superb (try the desserts), and the staff has always been nice. Great place.
