We had a great experience yesterday for dinner at Banana Leaf. We are regulars here and we love the owners, but what made our experience so great besides the amazing food was the awesome service provided by Andre. He was attentive and kind, he anticipated what we wanted before we could ask. Andre will go far in life with his positive attitude and he made our dinning experience wonderful.

Lots of hype.. and it really lived up to it ! Not the best ambiance, but food comes out quick and hot. The curries are really tasty especially the tamarind curry. Great place.

I used to go here every time I visited SF but haven't been in the last couple years. I recently went back on a busy Saturday night and ordered the pad thai ($9.50) to go. It took around 15 minutes to make. I noticed the pad thai was a little saucier than most thai places and was really spicy. I liked that it had a lot of bean sprouts and chicken and a couple shrimp and pieces of squid. Overall, the dish was tasty but not very similar to your traditional dry/sweet/tangy pad thai.

There is no better restaurant in the bay area, as far as I'm concerned. Amazing food that can't be beat.

Dang, this place is seriously crackin' on the weekend. And I thought having lunch here was a nightmare...for a Saturday night dinner, be prepared to wait at least twenty to forty minutes CAUSE GURL, IT'S A HOT. HOT. MESS. Being a Milpitas native, I've visited this industrious restaurant many times. I can pretty much remember coming here in elementary school with my folks! So yes, it's been here for awhile. And while it's certainly not going anywhere time soon (I can imagine it being here when I'm well into my 40's) and the food and service is food is decent to an extent, I just always find it to be either a hit or miss. Especially as the years have passed by and the more popular it has become. Banana Leaf has almost become a Milpitas fad; a place you'd dine out at due to it's sheer popularity. Most recently I came here to celebrate a mini-birthday dinner. As always, it was ridiculously crowded at 6:30, and we were waiting outside with a whole crowd of hungry fire nation folk. (If you get the joke, you are AWESOME. Hint: Think "The Last Airbender") Thank god for those outdoor heating lamps. (even though some of us felt like our skin was melting off lolol) We were finally seated and the waiter quickly took our orders. We ordered the usual popular choices including the roti prata, pad thai, the red curry chicken, the green curry, and the yin yong noodles. Roti prata of course, is always good. Everything else however was quite mediocre...particularly the red curry (Very watered down). Pad thai was plain (friend couldn't even bring herself to finish it) and the yin yong noodles were no better then Chinese fast food (greasy and oily; friend also couldn't finish it). It was a busy night, but even then, any reputable restaurant can't let their food steep that low in quality. Honestly, I'd recommend going to Layang Layang instead. More intimate, cozy, and food just as good if not better then Banana Leaf. And without all the crazy hustle and bustle? LL wins hands down.

Oh, the complex, tangy, zippy, gingery, lemongrassy rich sauces and amalgam of culture blending that is scrumptious Malaysian food. They were set to close at 2145. Full n then some at 1945---peeps waiting in chairs, between heat lamps. 2 orders roti prata Melaka (Malacca) prawns ---amazing flavor! Enough prawns....rich red sauce, tons spicing Assam okra:tamarindy, thick saucy gravy. Loved how the split the veg to maximize surface area flavor. Very cool-- Indian mee goreng-- chewy, noodles with egg, spice. Drier than pad thai, but like it, gone way Malay:)! Coconut rice Sticky black rice with mango for dessert... excellent.. needed a double portion of that puppy. that coconut milk impregnating and coursing through the rice kernels... indescribable. PS complimentary to-go cups of their Malay iced tea while waiting for to-go order. Sweeeeeet touch (pun intended!) Food coma gluttony ensued immed. aferward.

My friend and I were pretty hungry, but Banana Leaf didn't open until 5. I was craving Pad Thai so we decided to wait. Around 4:45, the hostess let us in to wait inside since it was really cold outside. One star for her. We were seated right away and given water right away- another star. Unfortunately, the water was lukewarm with off floating chunks of what appeared to be lemon, so we had to ask for water with ice which was much better. After the restaurant opened, we were given menus and a waiter came by to take our order. I ordered the Pad Thai and my friend ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice. Since we were starving we decided to order the Roti (without the egg). We thought 3.50 was a very reasonable price for Roti, but when it arrived at the table we realized why it was so cheap: it was only ONE piece of Roti! Usually other restaurants who have Roti give 3-4 pieces of bread, but this one only had one. So we split it in half and we were finished with it in about 2 minutes. Definitely would not spend 3.50 on one chunk of bread. I might also mention that the waiter told us that there were nuts in all the food. This was nice because sometimes waiters don't say that (though I assume if you're allergic, you'd ask anyway). He also told us that the Pad Thai would be "medium spicy." I said it was fine, because the first time I had the pad thai it wasn't spicy at ALL so I assumed it'd be the same. I was wrong. Within one bite, i realized it was ridiculously spicy. The noodles were also more red than before. The pineapple fried rice was super yummy though. My friend and I thought we could handle the spice, but we couldn't, so we flagged our waiter down and told him it was way too spicy. He agreed to "fix it." I had no idea what fixing it meant, but it turns out he asked his manager if we could have a new, non-spicy dish which I thought was really nice. In some restaurants, they don't allow you to exchange it if you've already tried some of it. This waiter, Alan, was super nice, friendly, and accommodating! I think he should get a raise (: Four stars for the great customer service from the hostess, Alan, and the manager. It would have been 5 stars if it weren't for that darn one piece of Roti. Thank you, Alan!

Food is delicious here! Most of the time, I usually come here with my gfs - when we got the Malaysian/Singaporian food craving. I would recommend the roti, pineapple fried rice, black pepper chicken and mango chicken. Also the sticky rice and mango is yum! This place is always packed and service is so nice here! Very accommodating.

The roti prata is so good. also the coconut rice! SOO GOOD. If the wait wasn't so damn long I would give it 5 stars, because the food is delicious. I won't come back again if the wait is super long :(

If you're craving Asian fusion, Banana Leaf will do the job. There's sure to be at least one dish that you like. That being said, I find all of their entrees very average. My first time here, I ordered the sizzling scallops, melaka seafood + eggplant, and 3 orders of roti prata. My sister thought that one order of roti consisted of one piece hence the 3 orders but I can't complain when my mouth is full of crispy fluffy bread. I really enjoy the melaka sauce and soaked all of my rice in it :] Second time around, my buddy and I came starving after a hike at Mission Peak. We were the first ones in the restaurant for dinner on a Friday night and I'm glad we didn't have to wait an hour like the first time. We decided on the dinner for 2 and were so ravenous that we finished every last bite of food! Banana Leaf Dinner (2) Galangal and kaffirn lime soup - my least favorite. Tasted like tom kha gai with way too much lime in it. My friend loved the spiciness though. Roti Telur - not as amazing as roti prata! On the menu it said the only difference is that roti telur has egg in the center however it is nowhere as flaky or delicious. In fact, it's a flat rectangle of roti. Get roti prata. Combo satay - beef + chicken skewers. Chicken tasted a little better to me, maybe since it's not as chewy as the beef. I love the dipping sauce that comes with it. Melaka salmon - A bit dry but the melaka sauce + vegetables saved it. Black pepper eggplant + string bean - holy shit was this spicy! I know, black pepper isn't even that spicy but the way they cooked it, the pepper was charred onto the vegetables and eggplant is a very absorbent vegetable. I let my friend finish the whole thing since he has a way higher tolerance for spicy. (I know, how generous of me.) We were chugging water throughout our meal due to dehydration from the hike and our waiter never failed to refill them promptly. He also got us a complimentary fried banana w/ ice cream dessert "to soothe our mouths from the spicy." Awesome! I asked my friend what dish he liked best and he said they were all average + complimented each other nicely. I also found each individual dish to be mediocre but still felt pretty happy and satiated at the end of our meal. I think it's worth it if you make reservations so you don't have to wait in the cold.

Super crowded even on a weekday night. I would highly recommend booking a table in advance (I think they only take reservations for 4px or more, if I am not wrong). Overall, a great experience. Good food. Probably one of the better Singaporean-Malaysian restaurants in the Bay area. Dishes I enjoyed the most 1. Roti prata - Really crispy and light. At $3+ a pop, it might seem expensive compared to Singapore where they cost less than $1. 2. Char kway teow - Loved it! 3. Belachan kangkong - Loved it! Pretty good 4. Indian nasi goreng - Tastier than pineapple fried rice! Appears red in color but it isn't spicy at all. 5. Deep fried banana and mango ice-cream - For those craving goreng pisang (banana fritters) this dessert is as good as it gets! Not to be confused with the deep fried ice-cream and banana dessert below. Others 6. Fried ice-cream & banana - The fritters covering the ice-cream was too thick, tasted like dough. 7. Chicken rice - It was only so-so. 8. Grilled sea bass with chili - This is probably Banana Leaf's interpretation of the famous sambal stingray dish. Sadly, it doesn't quite measure up to the ones served at hawker centers in Singapore. 9. Singaporean black pepper chicken - It's funny how some restaurants just invent Singaporean dishes that are not really from Singapore. Mediocre dish (in my opinion) though the server said it was a crowd favorite. 10. Penang poh piah - It doesn't do justice to the poh piah at all! The poh piah skin was too soggy and the sauces weren't tasty either.

I was quite surprised to see what appeared to be a restaurant called "Banana Leaf" when doing some pre-trip reconnaissance of the area around my hotel. A quick Google search later, and their website almost looks like the Banana Leaf website of old for the Vancouver locale. I tried to figure out whether they were related, but couldn't find anything definitive. Naturally, the next thought to come to my mind was to try and visit it if time permitted in order to compare it to the Vancouver restaurants. I do love Banana Leaf, but given the prices it's a place I don't frequent often. While in Milpitas, my fiancee and I decided to just give it a shot since we were looking for something that wasn't fast food. Like the Vancouver locations, this place was BUSY. Located in a small strip mall, there were easily 20 people waiting for a table outside. Given the nice Silicon Valley climate, there's about 8-10 tables outside on a pseudo-patio in front, with the rest of the restaurant inside. While quoted a 45 minute wait, we were lucky in that everyone was waiting for a table of 6+. Once a small table outside opened up, we were seated right away (after about 5 minutes of waiting). To start, we ordered the Roti Ca- I mean the Roti Prata. Visually, it looks identical to the Roti Canai that we have here in Vancouver. The taste was on point as well, as well as the curry dipping sauce. Our only complaint was that the roti was quite crispy, and just flaked everywhere when we tried to piece it apart. A touch less cooking time and they would be perfect. As mains, my fiancee ordered the Galangal & Kaffir Lime Soup. This soup was quite good- plenty of ingredients in what appeared to be a tom-yum-based soup. The lime was noticeable and welcomed, as there was a subtle heat to the dish. Overall, it was a good soup. I ordered the rendang beef (what I always get). For this one, we were actually asked how spicy we wanted it. With an early morning coming up, I opted for mild. I wish I hadn't because it was the dish was missing that "oomph" that it has here in Vancouver. The serving size was on par with Vancouver. Surprisingly, the prices are a bit higher than they are in Canada. Since my only knock no Banana Leaf Vancouver is the price, it's even more of a knock for this location. While a good meal, there isn't much value here hence the 3 stars.

I came here recently on a weeknight and it gets pretty busy, though we didn't have to wait. The establishment itself is decent sized, so there are plenty of tables inside and out for you to sit. There's what I think is a full bar and cocktails for you alcoholics lol. We ended ordering a papaya salad appetizer, a beef curry, and a seafood noodle dish with egg. The papaya salad had pretty hard papaya, like it wasn't too ready, but it wasn't bad. The sauce they use in it is interesting. I typically have it with fish sauce, but theirs tasted like a mix of fish sauce with soy sauce. It was interesting, but not my cup of tea. The papaya salad also lists that it's a shrimp papaya salad; however, it's only two regular sized shrimps, cut in half to make 4 pieces. Not worth it in my opinion for 9$- at least include more shrimp if you list it with shrimp. I really hate when Thai places charge you for a bowl of rice. I mean come on, we're ordering your curry so the least you could do is give us rice for it lol. I believe it's like $2 for a bowl. The curry itself was okay. I wasn't too keen on the taste, and the beef was medicore. One thing that I have to note, it is also a beef curry with vegetables; however, you literally only get one vegetable each lol. Like one carrot, one pea, one green bean, one cauliflower, etc. ONE. It was strange, and made me feel like I was overpaying. When the noodles came out, it was in this white sauce, and once again, ONE of each of the seafood. This place sure is consistent at least lol. The noodles had plenty of sauce to make it tasty, much like a wet chow fun if you know what that is. Overall, the service was pretty good, but then again we sat pretty close to the door and register so we were seen. Getting the check back took quite a bit though, because I also had a 20$ gift card that they had to apply and I guess that takes a while for some reason- other than that, the service was good. Everyone sort of looks vietnamese that works here, so I guess it's not really "Thai." Also, even with the gift card, I kind of think this place is overpriced for what you get.

Good food, a bit of waiting time. Worth it! This place is a bit noisy and crowded if you are looking for peaceful dining options.

Note: I only had one dish, but I saw several. It was my gf's birthday. She made a reservation over a week in advance to let them know there would be 10 of us. Great. They caleld the day before to confirm (nice!) and to let us know that they would not sit us without our entire party in attendance. We got there about 10 minutes before our reservation time and so had to wait for them to just clear up a little bit. I think it was the Manager (he was wearing a suit), showed us to our table and made sure we were sat. He was very nice. Our poor waiter. I don't know what his deal was. He looked young (maybe 20?), but he could barely figure out what was going on with us. Haha. All the girls in our party are easy going, so no one really had a problem with it. But this kid couldn't figure out how to get the right dishes to the girls (we have several people who are vegetarian). Anyway. He didn't mar our experience at all, and we got a good giggle about him (bad us!) when he gave one of the girls a guilt trip for not wanting to take her 4 pieces of chicken in her curry home as leftovers (we were going to a show after, anyway). One negative thing about this - our food did not come out at the same time. Or even close to the same time, really. We had some people at our table who had their food almost 10 minutes before the rest. Seriously, people. Keep the food on the back counter until it's closer to all being ready. 10 minutes is too long. I ordered the black pepper eggplant and green beans. That sauce is freaking spicy! I LOVED it! My gf next to me literally licked the spoon at the end to get all of the leftover sauce. I love hot and spicy food, so this made me crazy happy. The eggplant and beans were fresh, and the eggplant was cooked nicely, which is difficult for a lot of restaurants. The waiter was good at making sure we understood that when we ordered certain dishes, they were not Thai-style, they must get a lot of complaints about people expecting a thai dish and get a singaporean-style dish. We all knew (we're smart girlies and can read), but it was still appreciated. Since I'm from super north/east bay, I probably won't be coming back here. But it was a nice litte thai-fusion place that had some interesting flavors for a good price.

Banana Leaf used to be the "it" restaurant over a decade ago, and it's still busy now, but the atmosphere and food just don't seem the same as it was before. I came here for lunch a couple of years ago, and noticed the food wasn't great, but since we couldn't think of another restaurant to have a family dinner, we settled on Banana Leaf. I called a couple days before Friday, and was surprised it was so easy to make a reservation for a party of 10. The hostess made a point to say that we needed to be on time for the reservation. Of course, I ended up running 15 minutes late, and had to drive like a maniac through rush hour traffic. Upon arriving, I saw my entire family lined up against the wall- turns out, our tables weren't even ready yet!! The manager had already spoken with them and apologized, but still- your hostess makes a point to tell customers to be on time for their reservation when the restaurant isn't?? Needless to say, I had steam coming out of my ears, but I couldn't be too pissed since I was late as well. However, I civilly gave the manager a piece of my mind, and expressed my disappointment that we had to wait almost half an hour past our "reservation" time to be seated. We ordered a lot of dishes, so I've split them into recommended, average, and skip categories below: -Recommended Dishes: -Roti Prata (Multi-layered Homemade Indian Bread Dipped in Curry Sauce, $2.95): One of their signature dishes, and solid as always: thin and flaky, with a delicious curry dipping sauce. -Indian Mee Goreng (Indian Spicy Fried Noodles w/Prawns, Squid, Chicken, Tofu, Eggs, Ground Peanuts, Bean Sprouts, $9.50, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Flavorful! -Singaporean Black Pepper Eggplant & String Beans ($8.95, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): These were flavors I haven't had before, and they worked together well. -Jumbo Ice Kacang (Shaved Ice w/Sweet Corn, Jelly, Green Pea Flour Strips, Red Beans, Peanuts w/Coconut and Rose Syrup, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): They actually gave our table cups of the Jumbo Ice Kacang on the house, since we had to wait so long for our tables, and I'm glad I got to try this. It wasn't too sweet, but had really good flavors. Average dishes: -Huat Dan Ho (Flat Rice Noodles w/Prawns, Squid, Chicken, Eggs, Vegetables in a Thick Egg Sauce, $9.50, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Too much sauce for my liking, but my family seemed to like it. -Sarang Seafood (Assorted Seafood w/Vegetables, Mushrooms, Cashew Nuts in a Formed Fried Taro Nest, $16.95 yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): The fried taro shell was too greasy, and too dense. Skip: -Roti Murtabak (Multi-layered Homemade Indian Bread w/Beef, Egg & Onion Dipped in Curry Sauce, $7.95, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Pretty small portion for the price, and it was too salty. -Pahd Thai (Thai Pan-Fried Noodles w/Prawns, Squid, Chicken, Egg, Tofu, Ground Peanuts, Bean Sprouts, $9.50, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Very bland and boring pad thai, probably one of the worst versions I've had in a while. -Red Curry Chicken w/Vegetables ($9.95, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Not like any red curry I've tried, and not in a good way. Tasted more like a brown curry. -Green Curry Beef ($11.95, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): Not very tasty, and didn't have the same green curry taste I'm used to. -Penang Sizzling Prawns (w/Onion, Green/Red Pepper w/Chef's Special Sauce, $12.95, yelp.com/biz_photos/bana… ): There were a lot of prawns, but they were small and quickly ended up overcooking on the sizzling plate. I have to give their manager some credit that he went out of his way to take my table's order, and bring over the Ice Kacang on the house, but I prefer a restaurant not to screw up, versus screwing up and then having to recitify the situation. Also, some free drinks aren't really going to resolve a situation, and I would have preferred a couple of appetizers on the house. After this experience, and the mostly mediocre food (especially the appalling red and green curry), I know I will not be back to Banana Leaf. At least the parking was easy to find.

I've only been here once to try the pad thai several years ago.... but this Asian fusion of Singapore, Malaysian, and Thai is still in business for a reason. When it's busy, get a table outside to be seated faster! The only bad thing about sitting next to a electric heater is that it's either TOO COLD or TOO HOT. At some points, I didn't feel the heat at all and at other times, I felt like I had sunburn on my skin! Other than that, our table of 4 had a great experience. Appetizers: -ROTI PRATA - it's a must. You will not need to ask why, you'll taste it. Entrees: +SINGAPOREAN BLACK PEPPER CRAB - sooooo good. Worth getting down and dirty! I would like to know what the chef's ingredients are because I couldn't stop licking it off the shell. It was THAT good. One of my favorites of the night. Let's get crackin :) +PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE - what's even better than the presentation of fried rice in the pineapple is that it's just as good as it looks. Don't you hate when something looks amazing but tastes not-so-amazing? Order this too!! -RENDANG BEEF - loved the fact that the beef was soft and tender. Didn't like how typical it tasted. I would prefer Thai, Japanese, or Beef curry than this version. It didn't stand out compared to all the other flavors. -SINGAPOREAN CHILI PRAWNS - Another dish we all loved! It was that perfect kind of spice that you tasted and wasn't overpoweringly spicy. Definitely didn't have that spice lingering around, which I absolutely love! Great service and great servers! We received the FRIED BANANA AND MANGO ICE CREAM on the house :) I'm not a fan of fried bananas but the mango ice cream is amazing. It even has mango chunks in there! Definitely a great way to end a great meal. Thank you Banana Leaf! Another tip would be to go with a group of friends - that way you can eat more dishes and try more things! They're also very busy, so send someone in first or call ahead.

We've eaten here many times. The food is consistently exceptional. I highly recommend the rice that comes in a pineapple, as well as the black bean sauce on eggplant & green beans but today we asked our waiter for a recommendation for a noodle dish, and he said the Indian something-or-other noodles with squid was really good. Now, I would normally say "um... ok.... thanks. I'm going to get the rice" but I was with someone who was feeling adventurous so we got the noodles. And they were DELICIOUS. Not too spicy, with a combination of flavors that was about as complex and beautifully layered as any dish could be. And I'm not sure why squid was mentioned in the menu description, since there were a lot of shrimp, but only a couple or tiny squid fragments. I was picturing noodles with lots of squid staring at me, but it was nothing like that. I'm really glad I tried it - that's going to be my new favorite whenever I go there. The deep-fried banana is amazing too - served with ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce.... There's a good reason this place is always packed. No matter what time of day we of there, there is always a line out the door. If you find yourself having to wait, it is totally worth it.

I love the mango chicken and the mango sticky rice. This place is ridiculously busy for both lunch and dinner so prepare to wait or come early! When you roll up and see a huge crowd waiting outside, you know you have arrived. The food here can be quite spicy so make sure you tell them if you can't handle the heat.

Second visit today...total blah. Roti prata was its usual self but the pad Thai was a soggy mess and the papaya salad was a joke. Dressing drizzled outside and 2 sorry looking shrimp on top, sliced thru to make it look like 4 shrimp- total cheating. Not cleaned at all and black vein still in.....yuck! Won't return, albeit with their brisk business, I doubt they will notice

Banana Leaf is probably tied with Loving Hut as my favorite restaurant in Milpitas. Not exactly a prestigious award but these two would be at the top of my list in any city. Although the only thing they share in common is that they feature a diverse Asian-fusion menu. I've been coming here for years. It makes for a good pre-game meal before hitting up Dave & Buster's for some PG-rated fun. Even better when the after party is less PG such as The Poodle... yelp.com/biz/pink-poodle… I don't think I've ever been here on a Friday or Saturday night and NOT had to wait at least 10-15 minutes. I swear the entire city of Milpitas comes here at night. The wait usually goes by pretty quickly while hanging out under the outdoor heatlamps and checking out all the hot Asian girls that frequent this place sporting their clubbing best hoochie dresses. The vegetarian options are rather abundant here. I've tried most of the items that sound good but I keep coming back to the Sizzling Vegetable Delight that is served still sizzlin' on a hot plate. You can't have a meal here without ordering the Roti Prata served with a red curry sauce. The Roti is so impossibly light 'n flaky! The Soju and Sake drinks pack a punch. Especially when you sit at the bar. I think the bartenders usually add a lil' extra of the good stuff when you do. Maybe it's just wishful thinking? Banana Leaf is home to what may be my favorite Vegan dessert ever. Pulut Hitam! It's so simple, yet it is the perfect light dessert to finish off a heavy meal. It's just black sticky rice and coconut milk but the flavor is perfect to me. Of course the owner/manager? always hooks up free dessert. He's probably the single most reason for the fifth star. I think out of the 10 or so times we have been here, we've gotten dessert from him 8 times? In fact I've gotten so used to it that it's almost a disappointment when he doesn't "surprise" us with something sweet from the kitchen. Free dessert isn't the only reason he's a bad ass. He's constantly making his rounds, smiling and waving while simultaneously checking on people's tables. The dude never stops working! I'm getting hungry for some Pulut Hitam just writing this review...

I love Banana Leaf! Although some of the dishes are expensive, I feel like these are dishes that you can't just get anywhere. I'm a huge fan of Pad Thai and so I order it every time. One time, they said their receipt machine ran out of ink or was broken and they gave us a free dessert! It seems like they try to make their customers happy even when we weren't really even upset. The wait can be long at dinner time, unless you come early. Also, don't expect for the wait to clear out at 7 or 8. I feel like this is when a lot of people come. Favorite Dishes: Mango Prawns Pad Thai Roti Prata (Everyone orders this.) Yellow Chicken Curry ( This is just the good ol' curry that you can get at most Thai places, but I feel like it's considered a staple at a Thai/Malaysian restaurant.) There's a pretty large selection of food you can order. They have a vegetarian menu as well.

When I looked up Banana Leaf on Yelp I was shocked to see the low amount of stars. This low rating in no way form or fashion gives a true evaluation of the food and service. If it were up to me I would give this restaurant 10 stars. The owners are incredibly nice and have great skills in service. The food is authentic. The flavors, spices and ingredients used hit my taste buds right on the spot. If you try this place once you will be craving it again until you go back.
