On a recent anniversary trip to Lodi, Ca we made lunch reservations at School Street Bistro....upon entering we where immediately greeted by a very friendly waitress who seated us right away. This restaurant is situated in the old down town area of Lodi and the building itself is very cool and right at age with all the historic neat stuff to look at in down town. This place caters to a more southern type of cooking so for this was great. After a few minutes of deciding we narrowed it down to the snow crab and sweet potato tater tots and a couple Black and Tans to start. This is the part where I need to stop....I could have eaten an entire basket of these they were so good and the aioli sauce I might have swiped the plate with my finger to taste the last little bit. Onto lunch I got the blackened catfish with blue cheese cole slaw and my wife got the chicken and avocado sandwich with salad. I am really not sure how my wives tasted but she raved about it...I was so busy devouring this catfish with this unbelievable aioli drizzled over top of it. I also found myself grabbing a bite of the coleslaw and then the catfish. It was just the right bite of creamy and spice. Probably one of my top favorite places I have eaten at now in the last year. We really wanted to save room for dessert but that just wasn't in the cards for this visit...maybe next time. When in Lodi make sure you make time for School Street Bistro.

Always try something new here because everything sounds so good! One of my favorite places in Lodi to have lunch or dinner. Never disappointed. Service is always wonderful as well.

They have the best food in Lodi. Their menu is better than most restaurants in Sacramento and their service is impeccable. They have the best Caesar Salad and a BBQ Shrimp Salad that will knock your socks off!

I have been coming to the School Street Bistro three or four times a year for the last 4 years or so. The decor is nice and they always play good music. Staff is hit or miss. The food is always well presented, but mediocre in taste. I was excited to see they had Fried Green Tomatoes as a special today and seeing the sign outside is honestly the only reason we decided to stop there for lunch. The tomatoes were disappointing, but their truffle fries are always good. This could be a great restaurant if they would just go the extra mile but I was torn between 3 & 4 stars. It's like they have everything they need to be amazing but they are just lazy. Could be a 5 star, probably deserves 3 so I'll go with 4 for the School Street Bistro.

I really love School Street Bistro. They have really good food, a nice beer and wine selection and great service. Their menu has a classy Cajun-flare to it. Translated to food kicked up a notch! I made reservations through the Yelp app for dinner this past weekend. I was happy that my reservation was made without any problems and my special request of a high chair for my son, was acknowledged and they were ready for us. We were greater and seated right away. The service was very attentive and friendly. We started off our meal with the crab tater tots. Yum! A great mixture of potato and crab meat served with a great aioli. A must try!! I love trying new things on their menu! This past weekend I tried the creole pasta with shrimp. The dish was really good, the sauce and veggies were great and my shrimp were cooked well. The only thing I would omit next time would be the cheese on top. I have a weird thing about seafood and melted cheese being served together. My very favorite thing on the menu is the alarming chicken po'boy with the sweet potato fries. A must try if you like a yummy, messy chicken sandwich with a kick! I have also tried the steak salad, the jambalaya pasta, and I've sampled the bacon wrapped meatloaf. All were really good. I have had great dining experiences at SSB, they are quickly becoming my go-to dining choice. I would highly recommend giving them a try!

I liked this place. Ambience is warehouse feeling. It was crowded. The menu is pricey Southern food. I had a shrimp and goat cheese grits that were tasty. My friend had the shrimp po boy that she said was good. I would go back and try other Southern foods that sounded interesting.

Yes, eat here. First three stars: Truly delicious food here. We started with the deviled eggs and the crab tater tots. They were both delicious. We also got the pumpkin seed crusted Sazarac chicken and the bacon wrapped meatloaf. Both also delicious. Finished it up with some apple cranberry crisp which was, again, on point. Fourth star: They are BYOB. If you buy a bottle from one of the downtown tasting rooms, there's no corking fee! Fifth star: Great, personable and friendy service too, so a total win on all fronts.

Came here with the hubby for Saturday dinner. I had the angus burger and hubby had meatloaf. He rated it 9/10 (which is like a ten for us normal folk lol). I loved my burger with the garlic mayo. Waiter was nice. They have wine but not an open bar just FYI. I enjoyed my evening :]

Finally getting to the review.....we got a chance to dine here for Valentine's Day... Our overall experience was great. We had not been here in quite some time, and after our visit, we will definitely go back again soon... I chose from the Valentine's Southern Sweetheart Prix-Fixe Menu...the Wild Gulf Shrimp with Applewood Bacon, and Crab Ravigote were delicious over spring greens... Second Course I had their Soup... I believe it was a Jambalaya, however it tasted like a perfect version of a Manhattan that we have been unable to find... For my Entree, I picked the Corvina Sea Bass prepared with Chanterelle Lemon Beurre Blanc..and a Crispy Risotto Cake... Scrumptious! Hubby chose their School Street Steak, and the portion was huge...with truffle fries... We were hopeful to taste a slice of Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie, but sadly they ran out. Lucky for us, they substituted their Bread Pudding... And may I say it's the best I've had ever. I would go back just for the wine and Bread Pudding if it were up to me.... We shall return...thanks for a delightful evening..

One of my favorite dining spots in Lodi. I always loved the pork chop with Smoked Gouda Mac N Cheese. I've never had a bad meal here!

This is one of the absolute best restaurants in all of Lodi. My husband and I eat here often and the food is always delicious, the service is excellent and I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. I love their salmon, their appetizers and their wine list. We even took our family here for dinner when they were out visiting California from Minnesota last summer and everyone raved about their meals. The owner was there that night and came to our table to make sure things were going well. She was very welcoming and very nice. I'm already looking forward to our next meal here! :)

located on lodi's main street. quaint atmosphere with exposed brick and some seating outside. very attentive and friendly service. i got the special, which was tenderloin in a brandy sauce i want to say. meat was very tender, juicy, and had a nice smoky flavor. sauce was a good mix of sweet and savory. mashed potatoes had slices of potato and yam, which added a hint of sweetness. asparagus was crisp. cl got the jambalaya pasta. sausage was juicy and flavorful. chicken was tender. shrimp could have been more fresh. pasta was chewy and sauce had a hint of creme and wasnt overly spicy. deviled egg appetizer had a unique tasty flavor. finally, bread pudding had the right consistency and was topped with candy pecans. i liked it, but it might be too sweet for some. my only complaint, as others have said, is that i wish they had more comfortable chairs. overall, a very good experience.

Good (pretty) authentic cajun food in a place you wouldn't expect. Went here last week and had hush puppies, fried green tomatoes and the mini chicken avocado sandwich. All three were good and the service was quick.

Came up from LA to visit the boyfriend's family here in Lodi. Hoping I don't get stuck here. School Bistro is a good place to get stuck, though. I had the Chipewa Shrimp n' Grits--a copious amount of jumbo shrimp perched on a bed of fluffy grits, in a shallow pool of butter sauce (slightly disconcerting) with slim orange peels. Boyfriend had the skirt steak (medium rare) and Asiago truffle fries with green beans (which he promptly gave to me). The steak itself was a thing of beauty--a bit too medium for medium rare, but full of flavor on its own. The BBQ sauce was a good idea to enhance, but there was way too much of it on the plate. The Asiago truffle fries had potential, but it needed more melty-truffly-goodness going on. Wine selection was on point. (This is Lodi, after all.) Our table split a bottle of Klinker Brick Zinfandel--it was perfect for the skirt steak, and perfect by itself. Bottom line: How do I put this? We're from LA, sooo we have a lot more room to be picky with our restaurant choices. This is a excellent place for a Friday night date in Lodi.

One of our favorite places downtown; classy & soothing. Really nice to sit outside (when it's not too hot) and have a glass of wine with yummy appetizers. The crab tater tots are scrumptious!! The little mini sandwiches are great for lunch; meatloaf is my choice. We always enjoy our dinner meals as well. Rootbeer glaze porkchop D-lish! And they offer Lange Twins Moscato on the wine list. Service is prompt and pleasant with sense of humor. Cozy bar area. And the best part ... no loud brats with inconsiderate parents. Ahhhhh

This place was absolutely awesome! My wife and I had lunch here the other day and we couldn't have been happier with the quality of food and with the service. The bruschetta chicken sandwich was phenomenal as were the crab tater tots. This will be out new lunch spot for sure!

The restaurant had a nice ambiance and the man behind the bar who helped us was very friendly, so my husband and I were looking forward to a great evening with our friend from out of state. We sat at the bar and waited while a table was ready, which was nice. When we were seated, our order was taken promptly. We waited quite a while before we were served the appetizers, which were delicious. By the time we got our entrees, an HOUR had passed with no apology and we had been offered one roll of bread each. The wait would have been okay if the hour long wait was acknowledged by our waitress. It wasn't until the entrees were almost ready that she told us to blame the wait on our friend for ordering the pork... Um, what? When we got our food, it unfortunately was not worth the wait. The best parts were the Gouda Mac and cheese and appetizers. The "truffle" fries tasted like any other cold, salty fries and when we ordered dessert the creme brûlée had a burnt, chewy top. Overall, disappointed. The bill was over $100 and definitely not worth it.

No no no! Went here with my family including my one and half year old. We should have left as soon as we walked through the door. The looks from the oversized beast of a guy who greatest us was less than welcoming. Upon seating and asking for a high chair baby Huie retreated to the back and brought a high chair with no seat belt. So, we asked for different one to which our server replied there all the same. Obviously not if the kid next us was buckled in his. Needless to say we left. If my child can't be seated safely in you restaurant then there is no way I can enjoy my meal. I would have given 0 stars but that's not an option. Welcome to 2014 school street bistro. Parents take their children out and spend money in restaurants. Lots of money. Mine won't be going to you!

The food is great! The service is very attentive. The only issue I had with this restaurant is space. When I say "quaint", I mean tight. Many of the tables are like 24" apart. I felt like I should have introduced myself to the diners on each side of me. If you want any privacy while you dine, this is probably not the place for you. The average dinner price is appx $25. The quality of your meal is great though. I realize the theme to the restaurant is "bistro", however considering the price and quality of the meals, I think they should upgrade the quality of their chairs. Basically; wicker & steel chairs. Overall, still a great place to eat.

We needed a quick, late night, light meal. School Street Bistro was one of a few restaurants open at 8 at night in Lodi, so we ventured in. Small menu. We started with an appetizer. Fried artichoke hearts sprinkled with parmesan, served with a creamy pesto dip. I had one, it was good, but my tummy was protesting the richness, so I let Mr. B finish them all. He had no problem. Their Butternut bisque with fresh herbs (thyme?) was obviously made on premises and was quite good. Just right for warming our tummies. Wish we could have had refills as the serving was slightly small. And...just wish they would not have microwaved the sourdough rolls. They cooled down and were a bit tough, although still tasty. Served with real butter, they were satisfying. Thank you SSB for rescuing us in our time of need! Your staff is wonderful.

Visiting Lodi for the first time, we were excited to learn about School Bistro. It sounded good and the place looked inviting. But we were fairly disappointed by the service and by the food. The wait staff wasn't very helpful and the food was average. Nothing stood out. We thought that the wait staff was bothered that we didn't order any wine. We had been wine tasting all day so thought that we would go without. I had the Portabello mushroom sandwich. My friends had the Scottish salmon and the calamari. To my taste (I took a bite), the salmon texture was mushy and it tasted like farmed Atlantic salmon, for which I do not like. My friend liked it, however. After looking up Scottish salmon on our phones, we learned that it simply meant farmed salmon. Selling point I guess. Calamari was good, average. For the price, service, and food, we thought, meh.

My husband and I have been meaning to try this place but only recently got around to it. I'm so disappointed that we waited so long! The food was great, the service was prompt and friendly. My husband and I both had outstanding Po' boy sandwiches. The truffle fries were great, but the onion rings were phenomenal! I can't wait to try other things. But next time, I will save room for dessert.

I have been going to this restaurant weekly for that past 6 months. There food is so fresh and creative. It always hits my comfort food spot. We love there Bacon wrapped meatloaf, Angus Burger and there desserts are AMAZING. This place turned me onto Gelato and paired with there amazing molasses cookies was to die for. I recommend this place to anybody that wants awesome food, at a decent price with great atmosphere. Stephanie is our favorite waitress, she is always so nice, quick and helpful.

Pros: Good vegetarian options (Pesto Vegetable Po Boy is GREAT and the cole slaw is too though the mac and cheese tasted store bought.) Nice ambiance Cons: Slow service Staff doesn't smile Boring wine list Not willing to make substitutions or omit anything

Uncomfortable from the get-go. Winter time, high ceilings, with fans on the place was freezing. Used the restroom and the toilet is uneven which seems like an easy fix to level so it didn't feel like it was going to fall over when you sit down and the air freshener was also ancient and disgusting smelling. Back to my table, waiting for our orders to be taken and finally had to ask. We were served our single rolls while we waited for our meals. It was so cold in restaurant that if that roll was ever warm it was impossible to tell. Finished the roll and waited, and waited, waited The food arrives and it's barely warm. The mac and cheese was a cold lump of gross textured mush! The meatloaf was more like a meat blob with ketchup poured over it with a very fatty piece of bacon wrapped around. The flavor and texture nothing short of nasty. The only thing they did well was steam the broccoli to perfection. My drink was as off as the rest of the place and it was a diet dr pepper, is it that hard to set up a fountain dispenser? Trust me, i know what it should taste like and when my friend and i mentioned it to them there was no concern about it on their part or offer of a different soda. I'm sorry but I had to voice my dissatisfaction.

Yeah I like it. Prompt service and Good food at decent prices. Will always go with my old standby, the angus burger with Swiss, mushrooms or bacon. Don't forget the sweet potato fries. If you are a little extra hungry go for the onion rings. I recognize several servers who have been there a while, good sign.

We eat here regularly and always have a great experience. Fried green tomatoes, crab hush puppies and bistro steak salad are all amazing. My husband LOVES the catfish...prepared with cornmeal and fried...with hush puppies and the most incredible blue cheese vinegar-based coleslaw. He doesn't even usually like fish but has ordered this 6+ times and it's always yummy! If they are very busy then service can be a bit slow but nothing to complain too much about when the food rocks. Servers are always very friendly and they are great with kids as our 2.5 yr old can attest to. Don't miss this gem in downtown Lodi!

This is a real gem with honest prices and high quality entrées. Even the extensive wine list reflects this in price points. The service is superb, and the chef has a wonderful sense of how to meld flavors and textures in creating the wonderful appetizers and main dishes. Do try the bruchetta. My wife had the melt in your mouth steak salad while I dug into the pesto pasta primavera. As a great touch, they had placed deep fried artichokes pieces on top of the pasta. Wow! Deserts are equally spectacular. Be sure to try the Bourbon Pecan Bread pudding. All desserts are made in house- save room!

This was my first visit to SSB, and it was okay. Took a while to find parking because it's right next to the movie theater and it was raining, so I think everyone was at the movies. The bruschetta was good - got the combo, but I like the traditional tomato best. Also had two nice glasses of wine - the Cab Sav from Estate Crush, and the Bordeaux Blend Reserve from Langetwins. My husband got the ribeye and I got the Angus Steak; both were okay, but the sauces were a bit much. Overall, the dinner was okay. We'll be back to try again at some point.

We love coming to the School Street Bistro, we had dinner here the other night. They weren't serving my favorite dish but my server took my name and told me she would call when the special was being offered again. Food is always good. Our waitress was a hoot. We will be back for sure.

Was pleasantly surprised by this little Lodi gem. I saw the mixed reviews, but after our other dinner plans fell through, we decided to check this place out. Our server was quite friendly and attentive. I'm accustomed to a good local wine selection at Lodi restaurants, but I was impressed with School Street's affordable local wines. We had the fried okra and the po boy chicken sandwich. Both really great. I've grown up with my grandma's fried okra, so I can be picky. But they're was tasty, and a bit less greasy than the southern version (which is good). The chocolate dessert wine was a nice surprise. Just think Chocolate Martini crossed with a wine. Very chocolatey. We'll definitely be back. The only negative I could see is yes the place is a bit chilly (high ceilings and lots of windows).

P and I wanted a nice lunch after a mid-week wine tasting, and this bistro, in a renovated brick building, looked interesting. Even though they were scheduled to close in 10 minutes they invited us to come in and enjoy lunch, and they did not rush us. The windows light up the space nicely and the combination of brick and yellow walls make the room inviting. The curtains and the wooden bar added to the warmth of the room. We ordered from the lunch menu. P had a salmon sandwich and said it was perfectly cooked. I had a taste and I agree it was. My smoked Gouda Mac & cheese was good, and the ample portion meant leftovers to take home

What a Let-Down today! I've been raving for years now that School Street Bistro had some of the very best Burgers in Lodi... specifically the Blues Burger and their Original Burger. Upon insistence from my youngest son in Las Vegas to try some of the entrees I liked from School Street in the past, today I went in to re-certify the quality of the Blues Burger... Ice Tea (**** $2.40) Unlimited Refills. Chicken & Andouilie Sausage Gumbo (*** 1/2 $6.95) ( s3-media1.ak.yelpcdn.com… ) For starters, I either wanted the Deviled Eggs Southern Style or this Gumbo... Nice peppery flavor in a dark Brown broth... but with a Soupy consistency... which Gumbo should NEVER have. If you use the name Gumbo... it's assumed that you will make it with a Stew-like consistency. Some of the ingredients, which I recognized, were... chunks of Sausage & Chicken, Red Bell Peppers, Onions, Tomatoes, Onions, and to make it really Southern... Okra. Blues Burger (** 1/2 $10.95) To sum up in a short sentence... Pedestrian Burger in a nice presentation at a pretty high Price.. The description of the Blues Burger is... Original Burger with crumbled Gorgonzola, Smoky Bacon, and Garlic Mayo. As I previously stated, virtually everything in this entree was disappointing. Where to start? I could readily tell as the server, Tracy, was bringing the Blues Burger out of the kitchen was that there were dramatic changes in this Burger.. and not for the better. First of all... the Bun is not made from the same kind of bread previously... now it's a toasted and buttered Sesame Seed Bun, which crumbles very easily. Before the Blues Burger had a dark and stiff Bun which could last throughout the meal, very distinctive and sharp Gorgonzola Cheese, Fresh & kitchen ground and formed Hamburger Pattie, Lettuce, Onions, Garlic Mayo, Pickles, and their own hand-cut French Fries. Now, the Burger is presented with a previously frozen and bought Hamburger Pattie, Gorgonzola Cheese was bland at best, French Fries was over-salted with bits of Sea Salt. Tracy verified to me later that all the changes to this Burger (and probably also the other Burgers) were due to cost-cutting moves to save some money during this Economy. The problem is that the customer pays for it in the end... Pics-( s3-media3.ak.yelpcdn.com… ) ( s3-media4.ak.yelpcdn.com… ) Regular Coffee (**** $2.65) Still pretty strong Coffee... out of a Thermos, though. I voiced my disappointment with Tracy, who happens to be the daughter of the owner... she replied that she would speak to the Chef and Dad with my observations. The interior decor of School Street Bistro has not changed one iota since my first visit years ago... and it shows. I was seated by the front window with a view of my Bicycle... the walls show their age... with paint worn off by customer traffic and food stains by my table of from past Food Fights. The interior needs a face-lift for sure... Revised list of the Best Burgers in the 209... in no particular order... the Blues Burger used to be on this list... Carl's Restaurant ( yelp.com/biz/carls-resta… ) The Big Cheese $8.15 (greasy, but good) Andre's ( yelp.com/biz/andres-cafe… ) prices are for 1-Pound Burgers Black & Blue Burger $9.49 Sunrise Burger $7.99 (do not upgrade to 1-Pound) Hickory Cheese Burger $10.00 (order w/o BBQ Sauce) Andre's Classic $8.75

Great little addition to Lodi. Awesome service. Interesting menu. I had a salad which was great. Boyfriend had a burger and garlic fries. Garlic fries were loaded with garlic, which normally would be nice, but these had so much it made the fries spicy (hot). Looking forward to going back to trying other things.

I really enjoy eating here! Love their Bruschetta; especially when cherry tomatoes are in season but it's always good. It's a great start prior to your meal. Ambiance: 3.5 Service: 3.5 Food: 4 I've eaten here about 5 times and have enjoyed and received tasty food every time. Their mac & cheese has a spin with gouda but not too overpowering. Their pork is juicy and flavorful, the portabella sandwich is very satisfying and tasty. Decent wines

A taste of the southern in Central Cali, what a treat! A taste of my girlfriend;s meatloaf was delicious. I had the shrimp po' boy sandwich. The shrimp were huge and moist. The garlic fries lingered with me for a time. We enjoyed the night our with friends in a lively atmosphere. Definitely deserves a return visit and I'm adding it to my favorites list. Service was friendly and attentive. :) Small town charmer!

The food is outstanding. Cooked fresh. No Sysco here. For me that's what it's all about, but this place has everything. Atmosphere, good service and a cute little downtown to stroll. Did I mention the food was good? They take classics and put fresh twists on it. Love it.

We visit many places to eat but believe me when I say this place is amazing! I'm not one who orders meatloaf when going out and mac and cheese but theirs is out of this world. Great prices on wines as well. This is the only place we found that carries a great chianti we love from Villa Dievole (Tuscany) and priced only at $30. Also the bread pudding is the best part of all...my husband eats bread pudding everywhere we go and without a doubt this is the BEST!!!

This was a disappointment, we went during off time, there was more staff there than customers, yet we had to wait a long, long time for our food. I got the Po Boy and it was not even close to the sandwich made in the south. The shrimp were tasty-for shrimp scampi...but I did not order shrimp scampi and had my heart set on a Po Boy..the rest of the sandwich was very dry. I would not go back.

was introduced to this place a year ago when I wasnt really hungry and just had a salad. It was fresh and delicious. Found our way back tonight and it was just lovely. Everything tasted farm fresh and the wine list was good. We really enjoyed ourselves. The service was great too. Will definitly go back.

Great place, fabulous waitress, excellent food and wine (the owner is a wine maker and makes the House wine) which was very, very good. All fish on the menu are 'line-caught' and sustainable. Produce is organic and local when possible. Lots of local Lodi wines, with Zinfandel being the standout. We 'broke the law' and didn't order the meatloaf so we'll have to try that next time. Started with salads: house for me, Cesar for him. I ordered the salmon with a rice pilaf and veggies on the side. Husband had the beef with a mushroom risotto that he loved. I had a glass of the House sauvignon blanc and husband had two glasses of Watts Winery Zinfandel - EXCELLENT! Our waitress was very friendly and lively. She spent a lot of time talking to us about what it's like living in Lodi (she's even had burritos in Watsonville!) and telling us what places to see and come back to see. The only downside was that it took a LONG TIME to get our food. For a Friday night, the place wasn't full and there were lots of regulars there known by the wait staff. I like that. The only other thing I could possibly complain about was the squeaky swinging door in and out of the kitchen, it was a tad irritating, but I could see how it would also be endearing if you were a regular. We'll definitely go back to School Street Bistro!

AWESOME! We were one of two tables eating on a Friday afternoon but the menu sounded good so we went for it. So glad we did. Everything tasted to so fresh and homemade. Try the Crab Tater Tots! The Ranch on my side salad was deeelish. Great food for the price. Definitely give it a try.

Great, Wonderful, Delicious. First experience here and it was great. The food was on point and service to match. One of the better dinning experiences I have had in some time. It is really nice to be able to experience casual dinning with upscale formal service. Go check this place out and enjoy!! Oh yea, I hade the Creole Chicken and the smashed potatoes (yummy) and my wife had the meatloaf with smoked gouda mac and cheese (yummy)

If you intend to eat at this restaurant please reconsider. The bruschetta I ordered came with a mayonnaise pesto sauce that was creamy. Also the bread was not crunchy. By far the worst bruschetta I have ever had. The minestrone soup had so much pepper it was burning my throat. I ordered the lasagna with sausage assuming that would be something safe because everything I had before was so bad. When it came out the lasagna was cold. The sausage had a weird texture and I honestly do not think it was cooked and the cheese was also rubbery. My grandma ordered the creme brulee which was also quite unsatisfying as well. It was too rich and it was over cooked so you could taste that it was burnt. The prices were outrageous. If you want good advice dont eat here.

Terrific cafe dining experience. Brick lined walls, european posters, bistro styling. We had delicious Southern influenced gumbo, fried green tomatoes, then linguine and clams, good wine. Very friendly service in spite of other large parties the night we were there. Seriously, visitors to Lodi, the home town folks have been keeping this outstanding place a secret all to themselves. Not any longer. Sure wish it was open later on Fridays and Saturdays!

Hmmm .. well ordering their meatloaf is like ordering chopped liver and getting pate de foie gras. It could be good, but it ain't what you really wanted. Another yupped-up version of a classic that never really needed it. You shouldn't need to wrap meatloaf in bacon; it's meant to be made with cheap, fatty ground beef and served in slices.. and their BBQ sauce was far too sweet (use Heinz ketchup). A bit of a misstep. Having said that, the shrimp & grits were perfect and the service was excellent. I hate to knock a place down, but please please please don't mess with the classics. Mac & Cheese is meant to be made with American cheese; their's is slightly gritty, most likely because they had to add too much flour to the cheese sauce because they had to guard against cheddar cheese(or whatever cheese) breaking. I'm probably wrong, but these were two classics that failed miserably IMHO. That and if you're going to make an enticing dish like mashed potatoes and yams, please just make a smooth puree; theirs presented as amateurish and crude. Their tater-tot & crab appetizer was good, but they should ditch the chipotle-tainted dressing. Too trendy and inappropriate; sImple hollandaise would have been much better, or a simpler lemon and butter sauce. Oh well.. .

Went here with fairly high expectations on 2-26-10. Arrived around 8 pm, plenty of seating, yet, we had to wait an awkward amount of time until we were approached about seating. Waiter was obviously eager to leave, and had no interest in serving us at all. My date and I each had a glass of wine, she Klinker Zin, I the house Cab...decent wine with moderate prices. She had the butternut squash lasagna special, with goat cheese sauce...far too sweet, and warm at best, not hot. I had the clam and white shrimp linguini...very under seasoned, and, wow, FOUR whole shrimp!?!? Very ordinary, nothing at all special for either dinner. To make a very average meal worse, we were rushed out of the restaurant, as soon as we finished our meals. Save your money...try another locale, as we will, on School Street. Very ordinary, very meh...

One of my FAV places to eat in Lodi! It's a quaint venue and away from the traffic in downtown Lodi but I think that adds to the charm. It's like Lodi's little secret. I usually get a pasta dish and have yet to be disappointed in portion or flavor. They have these tater tot looking appetizers that are TO DIE FOR! I've had to push the plate away to prevent myself from licking it clean - seriously. It is a bit pricy but for something out of the ordinary with excellent service and food, I have no reservations about cost. Plus being in downtown Lodi, you can stroll School street afterwards and enjoy the nice delta breeze.

School Street Bistro is one of the only good restaurants in Lodi. The food is always fresh and tasty. The wine list has a great selection. Service at School Street is always great, and the wait staff is really kind and helpful. I love love love their fish tacos! I wish they had more beers on tap, but other than that School Street is top notch!

Quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in Lodi. My wife and I had a splendid dining experience there for our Valentine's Day celebration. We ordered the price fixe meal and I will go into detail on it later. But we started with deviled eggs on the a la carte menu. Whenever I see deviled eggs on a menu, I feel very much at home and I must try their version. My New Orleans grandmother would have loved these, they were that good. The filling was creamy and tangy, not too sweet. The egg whites were firm. They were sitting on a bed of lightly dressed bitter greens with shaved parmigiano-reggiano. Nice start. The first course in the price fixe meal was a tender ravioli stuffed with shrimp, crabmeat and goat cheese nestled in a cream sauce with chives and more shaved parm-regg. Simply superb. The ravioli had a nice texture, the filling was delicious and not overpowered by the goat cheese. I'm not a big fan of goat cheese because it can overpower dishes, but this worked well. The second course was grilled baby artichokes drizzled with a balsamic vinegar reduction and more shaved parm-regg. The dipping sauce was an aoli with garlic and lemon zest. A nice, clean interlude before our main course, which was a halibut filet topped with an olive tepanade atop a nicely seared rice cake over a bed of wilted spinach in a light tomato broth. All of the components worked well together. The acid from the broth and the olives worked with the delicate fish and the rice cake. The spinach gave some earthiness, some turf to the surf. Dessert was a crispy cannoli filled with chocolate mousse with a scoop of raspberry sorbet on the side with a chocolate syrup drizzle. Classic pairing of chocolate and raspberries. Just a wonderful finish to a fine meal. We had a bottle of 2008 Lange Twins Sauvignon Blanc, which went well with everything. Our waiter was exceptional and he paced the meal beautifully, as we were not in a hurry and didn't want the California Rush. After being so bitterly disappointed in recent weeks by Feed & Fuel and a recent bad experience at Rosewood, School St. Bistro never ceases to deliver in every way.

This place is underrated. The food and service is outstanding. And its usually pretty busy. Best food in Lodi!

Nice place. Bistro Burger was very good. Nice fiendly small town staff. I could eat my way through the rest of the creative menu with something for everyone.

We ate here last night and all four of us agreed the meal was great! Two of us ordered the New York strip, one ordered the salmon, and the other ordered another fish dish (can't remember what kind of fish). All four meals were delicious; I especially liked the mac and cheese with my steak! The service was spot on and for a small place in downtown Lodi, we were very pleased. A tad spendy (our meal was $215 with tax and tip after our entrees, three salads, and one average bottle of wine) but we will definitely be back! We only wish they had more outdoor seating!

Caught so much snobbery, attitude and down right rudeness coming through the door, we elected not to eat there and went elsewhere. Might be good food, but you'd better be thick-skinned or meet whatever mysterious criteria they have for a desirable customer.

Only get the meat loaf. Otherwise the food is totally mediocre. The last time I went was New Year's eve, and granted they were super busy but the service was ridiculously slow and erratic; saw several couples leave with a disgusted look on their faces. Last year they seemed to have very good bread, but something happened and they don't serve it anymore... Atmosphere is better than most Lodi/Stockton restaurants.

As we approached this restaurant on a Saturday night, there were only two tables with guests. Never a good sign. A server greeted us and said she'd be our server, but two minutes later another server came over to introduce himself and to say he would be our server. We were left alone; neither server asked us if we wanted anything to drink, even when we were served rolls and butter. We ordered grilled salmon, which comes with lemon rice and "seasonal vegetable. The server asked if we wanted our salmon rare or medium. What was he thinking? That salmon was a variation on beef steak? We ordered a half house salad, which can be added to the main dish for a reasonable price. The salad was a mix of fresh greens with a single cherry tomato. When the "medium" salmon arrived, it was covered in a goopy cucumber sauce. We scraped the goop off, but the salmon underneath was inedible. It seemed to have been frozen and then thawed for a few days and then cooked until dry. The taste was very strong and unlike any salmon I've ever had (and I eat salmon almost weekly). The "seasonal vegetable" was a saute of diced squashes, a very small portion. So, we left the restaurant nearly as hungry as we were when we arrived. Skip this place!

There was 6 of us at dinner with all different personalities and tastes but we had one thing in common.......we all thought the food here was outstanding! Took awhile to get dinner but it was well worth it!

Our waiter was great - attentive and considerate. Fish taco's were huge. Meatloaf was delicious. We split the deviled eggs appetizer. We had a wonderful meal and would definitely go back.

First of all, customer service seems to be priority for the Bistro. I had one bad experience there a couple of years ago and decided to give it another go recently and let me say, "What an improvement!" So I have returned a couple of times since then. The menu is always creative and evolving. If you get a chance, try their Corn Salmon Clam Chowder. Fantastic!! Oh, and I don't think that I've had a better tasting Burger in Lodi at all!

We stopped outside to look at the menu last night- I didn't think it looked very extensive and didn't see many options for me (a pescetarian) but decided to eat here anyway. We were seated right away (at around 5:30) and the place was practically empty, but they had just opened for dinner and we were stopping in after day 1 of Taste of Lodi. The staff was great, as was the food. We had the bruschetta 2 ways for an appetizer, and I ordered a salad with shrimp, beefsteak tomatoes and goat cheese (delicious). The portions are very reasonable (the meatloaf my parnter ordered was the size of a small fist). He really liked the scalloped potatoes, as well. We had a good bottle of wine (Lange Twins) and splurged for the pecan breadpudding (it would have made grandma proud). We will definitely be coming back! I would highly recommend this for a date or night out with friends- the bar area looked very accomodating.

As of Friday, July 11th, School Street Bistro will be open for DINNER only. I'm so sad!! I hope this doesn't mean that they're closing soon. Old Arch did the same thing and were closed soon after.

Not a huge fan. Went there for dinner a while ago. Food wasn't great, way overpriced, and service was practically non-existant. I know they're small, but it seems like it takes forever to get waited on. In addition, I feel like because I'm young they look at me like I'm not going to tip well and treat me as such. This is annoying because even though I'm young, I know how to behave in a restaurant. Doubt I'll be going there again.

Hadn't eaten here in along time and was surprised by some of the changes on the menu. Though some things haven't changed there is definitely a "southern" flair. Food was really good. My husband isn't as adventurous as I and wasn't a big fan of the side selections. He had the blackened catfish but substituted the sides for veggies and smashed potatoes. Loved the catfish and said the Noreen beans were the most flavorful he's ever had. Potatoes though we're dry. Loved his soup. I had the shrimp and grits. Basically it was scampi with grits in the middle of the plate. I thought it was quite good. I had never had grits, and they were a tad bland, but I think that is sort of their thing. Had a great Caesar salad to start. One HUGE complaint was hoe cold it was in the restaurant. I thought it was just us, but then looked around and almost half the patrons had their coats on. One of the "important looking people" saw me put my coat back on after about 10 mins. I would think that should be a clue that the customers were cold. Service however was fabulous!!

Food was decent, service wasn't great. My buffalo chicken wrap came with about 2 tbsps of buffalo sauce. My iced tea frequently ran dry, and I had no backup beverage.

We have come here so many times I can't even count. Every single thing we have ordered has been amazing. This is my favorite place in Lodi for a tasty high quality dinner. Only reason they didn't get a five - the service. It was good the first time we went and crappy every time since. They are so lucky we can't live with out their food!

I was looking for a reasonably priced place to celebrate our 15th anniversary w/out leaving the Valley-the trip to Tahoe was off due to the current cost of living in America! Grrrr. Anyhow, I was so looking forward to the fish taco's-I'd heard so much yelp about them; plus, I try to stay away from red meat! They don't serve them anymore! Man! My hubby and I got burgers (against my better judgement) and we both (he's a meat and taters man) were nauseated and gassy after dinner....not a pleasant way to end the evening! I will concede to the deviled eggs-great presentation and fun crispy garnishes on top but the main course, a burger left something to be desired! I was ravenous when we got there....we'd been wine tasting at Vino Piazza earlier in the day-very fun I might add-and I needed something to soak up all the great wine I'd sampled throughout the day....well, 2 little dough ball store bought rolls in a basket with some butter, not my cup of tea-I was expecting some rustic crusty bread with big holes to hold the butta, but, alas-it never appeared....I guess my expectations were a bit off. Seating was very close to neighbors(that can sometimes be fun based on who's in the hood) no booths and lots of bright lights-I sampled some of Bob's fries and they were very good-salad was just okay-I guess I was just expecting a lot more-but- it did not materialize!

There are plenty of gems in little old Lodi, despite what some people think. but in my opinion they don't get much better than School Street Bistro. Bacon wrapped meatloaf is pretty much my go to death row meal and I love that they taylor their menu to holidays and special occasions like Mardi Gras. At times the wait can be a bit long but the waiters are always polite and update you or compensate with appetizers or extra bread. I highly recommend this.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Lodi. My second time here and the food was just as great! I grew up in Lodi and the city is just as beautiful as when I moved away 25+ years ago. Very classy inside. Excellent service and they're there to serve their customers! We started out with Deviled Eggs Mediterranean. A very unique taste that I've never tasted before. Don't count these out, they're not your ordinary deviled eggs. Bistro Burger - I had my share of burgers, but this one was one of the best. Very juicy burger topped with portobello mushrooms and carmelized shallots with garlic mayo sauce. The last time I was there I had the appetizer special for the day, fried asparagas, the smoked chicken raviolis which is stuffed with smoked chicken, mascarpone cheese and pine nuts topped with a fresh tomato cream sauce. They were both excellent! Get there early or you'll miss out on their specials. We got there at 7:30 pm and they were already out of the special for the day. If you plan to eat and run, this will not be the place to go. Very quiet and you actually can hear what your guests are saying without shouting. Next time I'm back in Lodi, I'll be trying a new dish. Hopefully, I get there early for the special of the day!

My 3 friends and I dined here this past sat. evening (3/29) and had a terrific time. For starters we had the deviled eggs - as white trashy as it sounds, they were terrific, as was the artichokes w/ aioli/pesto spread; my entree was the meatloaf (i think it's one of their specialities) w/ garlic mashed potatoes - also quite delicious. for dessert try the upside down pineapple cake w/ coconut ice cream - i was in heaven. we brought our own wines. this is a great find in the local area, and i'll be back!

I heard this place had great hamburgers so that is what my friend and I ordered. When the waiter took our order we specifically asked him if we could get it cooked medium. He said it would be slightly pink so I ordered it medium rare instead. After about 20 minutes our burgers arrived well done. When the waiter came back to see how we liked them he said "they're a little well done aren't they? He didn't offer to bring us new ones and we didn't make a fuss. When the owner came over to see how we liked out dinner we mentioned it to her that we ordered them medium rare. She said she would talk to the chef. Now you would think the owner would have at least offered to do more than talk to the chef. Maybe a complimentary desert or something. Anyway, nothing was offered but an apology so we paid our bill and left and probably won't be back.

School Street does a basic menu of American food. Two favorites are the meatloaf and salmon (when offered). All side dishes and deserts I have had have been good tasting and properly prepared. Service is good although I have got a side order of opinion topped with unwelcome attitude on my last visit in early Sept., but it was the only time that it occured in a total of eight dinners this year. I would recomend School Street Bistro as my experience has been very good overall ...

I just moved into town from SF Bay area. I've been trying to find comparable fine eats that I was able to get in the city. School St. Bistro isn't so bad. I came in one night with my toddler. I wasn't dressed up and toddler was whining. The waitress asked me what I wanted- like, "Yes? Can I help you" and I told her I wanted to eat there. Isn't that obvious?!!!! There was a sign that said to wait to be seated, and I was standing in front of it. She showed me a table and was acting aloof, as if I was going to order, eat and bail. I had to show her the bling on my watch and new $600 Michael Kors patent leather tote (which I happily bought severely discounted b/c I love bargains). I am a woman of color in downtown lodi eating at bistro- isn't that normal? Was it my toddler?!! In any case, waitress warmed up and it was nice after all. Burger was good, she was nice to my daughter who asked her for the check in a polite three year old voice. All was well. Will I eat there again? Possibly- wish it had brunch then that would be definite. But if I get the "Yes?" line from another waitress, as if they're perplexed as to why I'm there, they will get no stars from me and I will not go again...why four stars? food was good, waitress came around after figuring out I was there to eat AND pay for my food, and bartender was cool enough to give my sweet toddler a french cookie when she started to cry after we finished our meal.

open for dinner only now. the head chef/manager treats me real good. wine tasting seminar anybody? i love private services haha. the steak is mmmm. pairings with their own wine is great if you havent decided to pick from a list just yet. their premiere passion and alecante brushe is very light in taste yet will warm you up during your pairings if you feel like something a little more bold.

The bruschetta was tasty but the rest of the experience went down hill from there. It was busy however there were three waiters and it is not a large place. It took over 20 minutes for our waiter to take our orders. Another 20 minutes for the Apps to arrive. It was almost 2 hours from the time we sat before main dishes arrived . The plates were HOT and the food luke warm. I was told I ordered the last rib eye, which was full of gristle, however the table behind us had two which came out minutes after mine. Smashed potato still crunchy. And the waiter never came by to check on us after he served our meal one plate at a time then had the nerve to aplogize for the kitchen's slowness, which he never acknowledge before dinner was served while we were waited, that his concern was his service. Well his service stunk! We finally had to complain and was told our dinner was being plated then but it still took another 15 minutes for it to arrive. DON'T GO!
