Stopped in before my sons lacrosse game. I ordered the Panama Red coffee which is a pour over with a shot of espresso. This is an excellent cup of coffee, rich, deep and earthy tasting. The folks here are very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere has a cool and funky vibe. There is a small parking lot, and I was very lucky to get a spot in this packed area. One of my favorite spots in the area!

Lively place full of character and characters. It kinda comes at you. The espresso machine pumps out suprisingly tasty brews, and, equally important, the barristas don't burn the coffee. Only draw back are the hours--if they could only keep it open for another hour and a half, they would get a more bohemian mix. Overall, it's way more cheery than the new espresso joint, Rosetta, which is good for quiet study, but why study books when the cafe crowd makes for a more interesting subject.

The best place for coffee in Livermore! Amazing welcoming people with awesome customer service, great coffee! Try their Blended Iced Mocha! I appreciate that one guy, I forgot the name but great customer service so i'll say 5Star cafe! With the best coffee crew in town :) Very cool seating area! Its a perfect place in downtown!

The people that work here are all super friendly! And their blended drinks are sweet and yummy :) Also: lots of outside seating for great people-watching downtown.

I go spuratically and have never had a wait longer than a couple minutes for a Carmelita or for regular coffee including the check out. Fast, efficient and fun with happy employees. Not one bad experience in multiple years.

Not just a cup of coffee if you get the pour-over. I enjoy this place for the location and they are the only place around here that does a pour-over. I recommend the Captain Kirk's blend. Great taste, strong and gives you the alertness needed to get through the job. That's why it's a four in my book. If you wondering why not a five star after this positive review; then you have never had Blue Bottle coffee. Happy Drinking!!

Friendly service, Coffee is just okay.. Ham and Cheese croissant dry and unacceptable. This place is wayyy over rated.. Too many coffee shops in the area for me to return.

After moving to Livermore 2 months ago, I've been looking for a nice cafe with great wifi to both relax and do work in. I have definitely found that at Panama Red Coffee Co. The people are great and so is the Wifi!

Panama Red gets away with being the only coffee shop in downtown Livermore. It's the only reason why we've been here several times, coffee fiends that we are. We've never liked the coffee here. On this latest occasion, I desperately wanted coffee and decided to try their latte to see if a specialty drink would be any better (I usually only get straight up coffee). Well, it still wasn't any good. I'll think I'll stop trying at this point.

Best coffee in downtown Livermore by far. Always good customer service in a very charming atmosphere!

Was happy to find a coffee shop that did pourovers. Yes, I'm a huge coffee snob and have a coffee subscription to prove it. However their coffee tasted horrible! It was overextracted, tasting burnt. So disappointing. Didn't possess any of the toffee and chocolate notes the barista said it would. But the people there were nice.

Espresso is passable? Best I can say. Awfully expensive machine they use to put out so-so espresso drinks. They don't really even know how to make semi traditional cappuccino. (At least the guys working behind the bar during my visit). Hope they have a loyal following. We will continue the search for goo quality coffee which just seems so very hard to find in CA.

Love working from, love the staff, and love the hilarious chalk messages. They are subtle, but funny. This is just a great place. The only bad thing I can say is sometimes the outdoor company is not so friendly. Like the religious guy on the megaphone. But they are smoke free now which helps a lot, and just great character and environment. I would not trade it for any other local hangout/work spot.

I was in the mood for some coffee, preferably a new place and a coffee that was sweet but had a little kick to it. I've passed this place plenty of times and it's always packed so I was under the impression that the coffee was great. I walked in and i loved the whole ambiance of the place and it was very colorful and lively in there. That's always a good thing to walk into a lively place when trying to get a little pick me up. Their menu was not like most coffee shops I have been to, it was written all in chalk and the names of the drinks were very interesting to say the least. Prices were a bit on the high side but that did not deter me, I refused to go to Starbucks just to be let down like I had been lately. I asked the barista what their sweetest coffee drink was and I was told that it was the Caramelita which is a caramel and vanilla based espresso drink. So I ordered a small Caramelita and asked that it be sweetened. When my drink was ready it was given to me without a lid and it had a cute design in the foam, I didn't really expect that. (designs in the foam of the drink excited me for some reason). I took a sip and was so disappointed it was extremely strong, maybe the strongest I've ever had at a coffee shop, it was not sweet at all. Not only was it not sweet but i kept tasting the coffee grinds, no bueno. Maybe it was an off day for them or maybe that is really how they serve their drinks but for their sweetest drink not to be sweet at all was a huge let down. Maybe I should have went to Starbucks, at least I know I would taste some sweetness or reamnants of caramel and vanilla not just espresso.

Having been to the #1 Rated Panama Red coffee shop in downtown Concord, I was anxious to try its sister shop in downtown Livermore. I was not disappointed. Arriving late on a Sunday morning, I loved the laid-back atmosphere surrounding this shop, lots of locals kicking back after a bike ride or morning outing. An impressive amount of outdoor seating is popular with groups for sitting around tables/benches and socializing. There's a good amount of indoor seating as well, nicely sequestered in a back room away from the ordering hubbub. If you like Starbucks Frappaccinos, try the Panama Red breezes: I'm a fan. And kudos for a unique set of flavors I haven't seen in other coffee shops. For example, I tried a Coconut Mocha Breeze and a Raspberry Mocha Breeze, both of which will appeal to sweet, flavored coffee fans. My wife was quite pleased with her Caramel Cinnamon Latte. Downtown Livermore and coffee shops are a nice mix. After relaxing for a while at an outside table, we took the remainder of our coffees and sauntered about downtown, looking in at anything that was appealing. A great way to while away the morning! This Panama Red was Livermore's first coffee shop; there's an interesting history on the wall to peruse while waiting for your coffee. All in all a winner!

Great cup of jo. And she'll offbeat claw after searching not only Ca. But half a dozen states and twenty cities this is the best since my own bakery in Newark. Ca. Dozen years ago excellent service and best place to kick back on a morning for doing nothing

Always super great coffee. I love their lattes and they make amazing mochas. One time I ordered a pour over and that was tasty as well and interesting to watch. Friendly and trained staff. A big seating area inside and outside. Cool local art on the walls that rotates frequently and some is available for purchase. Friends of the Livermore Library books you can take a paperback home for a buck. They hire a lot of creative people and their menu boards usually have some pretty awesome art work - I was blown away by some of the Game of Thrones art they did in chalk. Sometimes they have live music (at least in the summer time, my cousin played a gig there.) Smokers are not allowed to smoke outside {or inside, duh.} - HUGE plus (sorry smokers but you stink and I feel like I lose minutes of my life from your second hand smoke that I didn't sign up for!) Opened later, 9pm and 10pm are closing times so it's cool to catch a movie at the multiplex and then walk over here for a little pick me up espresso. Will visit again many more times, thank you Panama Red!

I stop at this coffee shop at least once a week for a triple Jamaican shooter (3 shots of espresso with Jamaican rum flavor). The baristas are awesome, knowledgeable, and nerdy like me. I've made multiple Instagram posts of the artwork on the walls. For instance, during this season of Game of Thrones, the baristas created several GoT themed beverages with artwork to match. There's always some witty slogan on the wall that makes me smile when I walk in. To top it all off, there a live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Great local coffee shop. PS: For all the true coffee aficionados like me, Panama Red is rumored to be acquiring a vacuum pot soon!

The go-to coffee spot and hangout where you can people watch and see all your friends and neighbors from around town. Crazy busy around lunch from high school, of course, but that's to be expected. Their Heavy Metal tea is one of my favorite drinks from any place anywhere. Wifi and restrooms, but don't expect any AC on a hot day. Just open windows and fans; it's nice in it's own way.

  • Rebecca H.

Delicious almond nonfat latte. It's a very peaceful environment and a great place to relax, chat, take a break. The baristas are friendly, helpful, and seemingly a great group of welcoming people. I'll spend my money here instead of Starbucks. Only bummer was being body checked by a grim hipster on my way to get a lid for my coffee. That seems to be a common complaint here, rude young adults. Of course it's not the fault of the business, but it does put a damper on the experience to put up with ill mannered children in big boy and girl bodies.

I was delighted this morning, when traffic was obsolete and I had an hour to search for coffee. I passed 7-11, (because Friday deserves better) decided to go to Panama Red Coffee Co, I had been there once before on a rainy night. I wish I would have taken pictures of the amazing art work on the chalk board menus, two awesome portraits, of Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. The WWE themed specialties made me smile and the "Power Bomb" Latte (Hazelnut-Almond Latte) was absolutely perfect. Not too sweet, still strong, and just the right temp. I love the ambiance and the staff was nice. What a refreshing sip of originality!

What a cute little gem this spot is in Livermore! I did a quick search after a food coma inducing lunch at Sumo Sushi for a nearby coffee spot because I needed my caffeine fix for the day. Parking wasn't too hard to find, and it was a sunny, beautiful January afternoon in California, so the short walk wasn't bad either. It's got this nice glow indoors because it's at the corner of the block so you get the full spread of the sunshine indoors. There's outdoor seating as well. They have their own roasts, friendly baristas and killer brewed coffee. I had a latte, my usual, but it was rich and delicious! This place is also insanely dog friendly, so many cute dogs surrounding this spot! Totally recommended for a cup to go or even a cup to sit and people watch.

Good coffee, decent breakfast sandwiches. Do yourself a favor, and ask for the breakfast sandwich on a croissant over the bagel. Friendly service! For sure a step up from your usual Starbucks or Peets!

Funny thing happened on a road trip on a side stop en route to a Chain Coffee Place. I decided to Yelp for a local roaster and found Panama Reds's original location. And found the cute downtown area! Great coffee, nice folks, scrumptious locally made pastries including a hefty ham and cheese croissant. By golly this could be the start o a beautiful habit.

  • CJoy F.

Nothing special about Panama Red coffee. Mediocre at best but location is excellent. It's a funky place to hang out. However, if you want to drink high quality coffee, there are much better coffee houses nearby.

  • Melissa M.

My favorite place to get a cappuccino other than when I was in Italy. The most close thing to it! I drive from Stockton to San Jose five days a week and this is the place I like to stop for my early morning wake up spot if time allows! If you have not tried it here you need to... The baristas are all fairly laid back and mellow as well. I like a couple of the guys a tad bit better than a few of the others because they understand my drink better but they are all very friendly!

    (5)
  • Jay C.

Coffee tasted burnt and over-roasted. Obviously, they don't take their coffee seriously. Or they're not like most of the hipster third wave coffee roasters in SF. The main redeeming factor is the ambiance, since it's situated at the heart of downtown Livermore.

Came here late but coffee was great! They even had a live band at night. Great selection of coffee and they were yummy!

I love going to Panama simply because of the atmosphere, but today was even better than usual! I needed something to wake me up this morning and perk me up cause my day was sucking since I woke up. So I walked in and a very smiley lady with a compass tattoo on her right arm greeted me and helped me figure out what drink to get, and then my cards weren't working. She was super patient and got the drink started while I checked my account. Turns out it was frozen for an anti-theft scan thing for the day. So I went back to the counter and apologized and said I wouldn't be able to pay. She immediately said, "Don't even worry about it, it's on me!" With a huge smile. It took me a second to process, but it was for real! That one selfless and super nice act turned my whole day around! (Side note: I highly recommend the Royale!)

  • J W.

The mocha didn't have a strong coffee flavor. But it's not sweet so overall it was ok. I would like more coffee though. Neat coffee place where people can chill with their drinks and do their work or hang out with friends. There's a bookshelf where you can purchased books from the Livermore library, $0.50 for soft cover, $1 for hard cover. The books are in good to new condition.

Amazing coffee and such helpful, enthusiastic workers! Got the Bender Blender and it was AMAZING! I wish this place was in LA.

This joint has Almond Milk!!!! Omg, the almond Honey Latte is amazing. My taste buds jump for joy. It is an orgazum of flavor. Best place for yummy creative coffee in Livermore.

Very good strong coffee not as sweet tasting as Starbucks. I think this place might just be as strong as Peets coffee. I love there cinnmon, vanella latte its so good. Was disapointed that they dont have the sace tops to make design but over all the service was very good. Like the lade back atomosphere. Love it when they have live entertament.

It's official, I'm in love. My first visit here they got my order wrong but none the less, they gave me a hot vanilla coffee but it was amazing so I didn't mind too much. For me, idk why but ordering is always confusing because they have all these cool names but no description for what it is. My 3rd visit and every time I've ordered a different drink and they just always get better and better. The vibe is vibrant, always leaving with a good attitude and the coworkers seem to care for their customers beyond they're suppose to.

Love. This. Place. The coffee here is so amazing, there must be crack in it. The staff is great, and I love the character that this place has.

  • Gabby S.

I can't stress it enough how much I love this place. My friend and I come here every Monday and Wednesday after we get done with class...it's become quite a tradition. The staff is always so friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere of the place is so warm and cozy. Drinks are flavorful and boy are they strong! Whenever I find the time to go here, I always do. This place is wonderful.

"You know not all feminists are women", is what the hipster girl with pink hair said to her girlfriend with hairy armpits and a half-shaved head sitting across from her as my daughter and I walked by Panama Red the other day. I try to have an open mind and be accepting of many different types of people, and I feel old and slightly judgmental writing this review, but this one little encounter typifies my feelings towards the crowd that is most often hanging around Panama Red. If you're lucky enough to go there at a time when you don't have to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke to get in or be asked for money from a hipster with no shame, you might get to enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Unfortunately, every time I'm downtown in the vicinity of Panama Red I just get annoyed and wish I was somewhere else. Peet's coffee down the street has better coffee without the self-indulged, self-proclaimed non-conformists lingering around annoying away patrons.

Great baristas. Local coffee with locals. Live music or other entertainment on weekends. Great artsy atmosphere.

  • Lola B.

Delicious coffee, friendly service. So glad you guys put the smack down on all the yucky cigarette smokers that hangout on your tables all day long. I can now walk by without the stench of smoke in my face. So thank you and please keep it up. That was a very good business move on your part. The only thing I would change is the lack of food options. It would be super great if you cod offer organic milk, salads and maybe some sandwiches . Other than that you guys rock !!!

I wish I lived in the area so I could come here more often. This is such a nice place! I definitely give them 5 stars overall but their service alone is worth more for sure. They have great coffee and make all kinds if great coffee drinks. They have almond milk which I love! They also offer a variety of things to eat. I've tried some of their pastries. They have gray muffins and they often have gluten free options. This place can get packed from time to time so it may be tough to grab a spot to sit but usually people can some some little corner to nestle in.

    (5)
  • Kerry M.

The coffee is good, the pastries are ok, but it could be a lot cleaner both on the inside and outside. It's in a great location and I think if they put a little more money into the decor and of course improved their pastries, it would go there again. I've been twice and probably won't go again, unless I see some changes. I know it is trendy because it's the only place around, but I'd rather spend my money at Starbucks.

Great service and a very friendly staff. We ordered a pour over coffee and a latte. Both were done to perfection.

If you know there's one thing about me then you know then it's I'm a BIG FAN of coffee. So I was really awesome to find this great cafe on a day trip out to Livermore (excellent?). I got the ice capuciño. And my friend got the latte. Both were great and a perfect way to cool off on a super hot day. Plus the guy at the front counter was SUPER chill and fun.

On Friday mornings, when our daughter has dance class, I will walk down to Panama with the boyfriend. It's like our routine we do every week...it's a nice walk, especially when the sun is out. Panama is a cute little coffee shop that is located on the main street of downtown Livermore. The staff is always friendly and makes drinks quickly. I've never had to wait more than a minute or two to order. It's definitely a locals spot. I always order cold drinks, summer or winter...it doesn't matter. The mocha breeze with the coffee beans is so good! Seems like a good place to meet with friends and catch up on life. Or read the newspaper. Or sit with your kids. You can't really go wrong with Panama Red Coffee Co.

    (4)
  • Luna R.

Great tasting espresso but the milk is never hot enough, I order two shots of espresso with the same amount of milk, I alway say extra hot but it is always just room temp, I don't get it.... its called a cafe Cubano but no one in Livermore, knows what I'm talking about....but the service is good, good music, lots of smiles no attitude... but then again I can have an attitude when its early and I've not had my cafe!! lol

  • Sean S.

Open mic night and the impromptu philosophy debates are a plus. The wall of fame for baristas is great cuz it helps my forgetful brain dial in the faces to the names. Ask about the Chuck Norris photo for the real skinny on how it got there ;-) More than fifteen herbal tea blends rest, fresh and alluring, in mason jars atop the display case - and the choices are funny and awesome. And when you trade your $ for real beans they have a neat touchpad thingy that you sign and type in your info for a text or email receipt. No other place I've seen has that. Pretty cool! Embedded coffee cups in the rear wall mosaic? Hey man ... it's art. Check, check, check: outlets, comfy seats, and good wifi. A special bonus is if you fall asleep, you probably won't wake up with sharpie drawings on your forehead ;-p

LOVE this place and it's hipster vibe! A very quaint little coffee shop in downtown. My boyfriend and I come here often. Great coffee and hot teas! Staff is always very friendly! Reasonably priced.

Love the coffee here, it never ceases to amaze me. This is as good as it gets; product, location, and ambiance. Nailed it!

Panama Red is the best independent coffeeshop in Livermore; possible in Pleasanton as well. The coffee is great and the selection is extensive. The service is great! All the employees are extremely friendly, helpful, and talented baristas. This is a great place to hang out and socialize or quietly read on the outdoor patio. The only downside is the baked goods aren't that great. I wouldn't recommend the pastries.

    (4)
  • Victor G.

Panama Red Coffee doesn't look like much, just expressos and lots of room to sit down in. wi-fi's probably in the house. rating is for coffee only (either sumata, columbia, or salvador, didn't ask) -(2.00 L) smooth, bold, not harsh. looked like it was freshly brewed too. service with a smile.

  • Molly M.

I've only been going to Panama Red for about a year now, but I have to admit, I've really come to adore this place! It looks small from outside, but the store itself is very long and has plenty of seating available (assuming it's not a busy Friday night). They even have a few books on their shelves that you can read while you drink your beverage. The Coffee itself is very good, and is immensely better than chain store coffee like Starbucks. It's very fresh-tasting and earthy. Just what I like. :) Depending on how it's made or what you get, it can sometimes be a little too sweet, but I still enjoy what they make! And the staff is super friendly and nice; one lady made an image of a leaf in my coffee with cream, and I thought that was just the coolest! They definitely don't make fun little pictures in your drink at Starbucks. ;)

Definitely worth the stop if you are in Livermore, cool little coffee shop. It has everything you can expect from a Peet's but it has the cool feeling of a family owned or independent coffee shop. Coffee is strong and delicious. They even has furniture and books (at least they did the last time I was there).

    (5)
  • Megan M.

Every aspiring downtown needs an independent coffee shop. It just... does. Panama Red fits this bill nicely, with its old-fashioned stucco-looking exterior, and artistically run-down interior, with mismatched furniture, padded window seating, and battered dresser filled with an abundance of used games. I really like the coffee. Coffee should not be sour, and the blends I'm served are always smooth and creamy here. The smoothies are ok, but not as good as Jamba or Roebeks. I think they're too sweet. In the back they have books, which you can read while you drink. If you like the book enough to adopt it, you can buy the hardbacks for a dollar, and paperbacks for fifty cents. From what I understand, the selection changes somewhat regularly. The vibe is really nice. It can get really loud because of the coffee machines, and the live music, and the (admittedly) annoying hipsters that frequent the place. Outside can also be bad, because there are some panhandlers and annoying amateur musicians, and sometimes groups of people park themselves outside the door and smoke up what should be a pleasant outdoor coffee experience. Overall, I like this place. The people who work there merit 4-stars for their service, the coffee 5-stars, the clientele 2-stars, and the ambiance 3-stars. It's a great place for casual dates, or hanging out with friends.

Here's a really great local cafe in downtown Livermore of all places. But it sure is a delight considering that every other cafe in this part of the east bay is more or less as Starbucks. It has plentiful seating, free wifi, and a nice location. I often go here to do work or read when I have the time. The staff is also very friendly. It's nice that they do live events on what seems like a weekly basis as well. Overall, I really like that it has a character and charm all to itself. Would recommend.

  • Tara G.

Coffee is great here but they need to work on their pastry options. I stopped in and left because I was mostly looking for breakfast and the tiny scones and burnt-appearing cinnamon rolls just didn't work for me. I've had the coffee here before and it is well worth a stop in if that's all you're looking for.

My family moved to Livermore about two years ago, but since I'm in college I never got a chance to explore what's around here. I really like coffee shops so I yelped and found this place. It definitely lives up to its reviews. It's small, but not too crowded which I like. Friendly and FAST service. The mocha breeze with coffee beans is amazing!! I would definitely recommend it. And it's not really that hipster in my opinion..

I have been a panama customer since the Livermore doors opened (I think about 12 years), and it has remained my favorite coffee spot since. After a few years living out of state, I had grown used to big chain coffee, and my first sip upon arriving home made me realize I forgot HOW good coffee could be. :) To give my personal opinion on some of the less ecstatic reviews... I think what you have to remember is what your basis is for your expectations as well as how realistic they are. Panama (thankfully) is not Starbucks. They are an independently owned small business. Considering the economy and staff fluctuations, Panama has held up quite well. Mass chains have a bigger budget available, so they have the luxury of heavy staffing as needed and extensive early training, as well as contracting out more services. There are always going to be different perks & draw backs for different businesses. I've never had a Starbucks "remember me" even as a regular at any given location. The managers here are dedicated to fostering a community environment and an excellent experience & product. When I came back after 2 YEARS away, I walked in to a warm welcome from George. To my complete shock, he looked at me and asked, "Where have you been? Did you move? Toffee coffee, right?" Wow (I wonder if he saw my eyes bulge in astonishment?). I can assure you that the Starbucks near my last house probably hasn't noticed I stopped coming in.... Let alone remember my drink order. It's not possible to remember every name or every drink; but all things considered, I think Panama is by FAR your BEST bet for a personal, quality experience with a coffee shop in Livermore. There is a good reason they've been successful through the economic downturn- you should drop in and see why for yourself! ;)

Came on a Sunday and they had live music! Pretty cool :) Their chai was delicious and reasonably priced. Our orders came out quick, and there were plenty of places to sit and chill out. I really liked the wall made of mismatched tiles and coffee mug parts too. Very cute feel. The servers were friendly -- check out the Hollywood-esque headshots of their employees on the wall!

This place is alright. I guess there isn't a lot of students in livermore so the cafe isn't that great of a place to study since it can get pretty noisy. I got the panama red coffee and it was pretty pricy for just black coffee. But it was good! I would probably come back anyway and maybe try some of their speciality coffees

Carmelitas.... mmmmm yummy goodness. This place is great, I'm glad it sits in the middle of downtown instead of a Starbucks. The drinks are consistently well made. I really wish they were open later though... there have been multiple times I've been craving a drink past 9pm while walking around and had to go without.

The atmosphere is a bit different, but that's what makes it unique.. the coffee is 10x better than Starbucks, and everyone is so friendly. I thought the Bianco Breeze with beans was AMAZING. Minus one star because parking in downtown Livermore is a bear. I wouldn't go here unless I was there for another reason. Oh well..

Just when you think it can't get any better...it does! Panama Red, does it again. I got the Royale. You see, I first got this drink years ago as it was recommend by George. He's a sweetheart and has worked there for about 9 years. He's a mainstay and a GREAT guy. I was impressed with the flavor, so I kept getting it over and over again. George was thoroughly helpful. Well, they ALL are helpful there; Alicia, Alyssa, Wilson, all of them! The coffee is GREAT, the people are wonderful and you will enjoy the atmosphere, the music AND a GREAT cup of coffee. Thus far Alyssa granted me a phenomenal cup of joe, a delightful decoration on it and a huge smile. What a doll.

I came here expecting to get a drip coffee, my coworkers who live in Livermore have raved about Panama Red. I was disappointed because I left with a cup of soy cappuccino. The service was bleh and meh. They expected everyone and anyone that walks in to know what they already want which I do but I was not welcomed nor told about the blends and felt very reserved to even ask. As others have mentioned in their reviews the place is a a mess and sort of falling apart (the board covering the bottom of the pastry display case fell down - detached.)

The hubby and I decided to walk downtown for our late morning repast today and stop at Panama because we heard they now serve up fresh in-house pastries as well as improvements all around. Glad we did because we had excellent in house made bear claws and tasty coffee. The atmosphere reminded us of the times two dozen years ago when we first became permanent weekend-fixtures. The service was EXCELLENT, everything was neat and clean and we really enjoyed our eats/drinks. Today the heavy smokers were not out en force so we were able to truly enjoy our time on the patio with our Ambassador dog Darwin. I know no one can really control the smokers and I'm all for personal choice (though it's gonna kill ya!!!!), but I much prefer not sucking secondhand smoke. We deffo look forward to returning again and hopefully I can get a few knitters/crocheters interested in meeting there for string/sticks and camaraderie some evening the way we did in the good old days. :)

The best place in the world for coffee! I come here just about every morning (either by myself, with one or both of my kids, with my husband or with my whole family) and we couldn't love it more. The staff is awesome, super friendly and always know our order. The atmosphere is laid back, and makes you feel right at home. This place is definitely one of Livermore's gems!

This place is extremely overrated. I purchased an iced chai and it was weak and watered down. I don't recommend ordering it as it's expensive for what you receive.

I agree with John G's review. From looking at the pictures posted, I was excited about finding an awesome Third Wave coffee shop in the Tri-Valley. Ordering a medium cappuccino, I was told by the barista that it'd be a double shot. Unfortunately, it got served in a ridiculously large cup and there was way too much foam and milk compared to the amount of espresso. Oh well, the search for good coffee in the Tri-Valley continues.

I've passed Panama Red Coffee so many times and was always curious about the place because it's always bustling! Last week I finally decided to try it out since I was craving some coffee. I'm not a huge coffee drinker but thought I would give the place a shot. I went inside and ordered a single soy latte. It wasn't bad or great but it tasted decent. Next time I might try some of the food because it looked pretty good. The atmosphere is pretty relaxing inside. I was there live music was playing. An older gentleman sang some songs on his guitar and harmonica. He was really good! The inside is pretty spacious for a coffee shop and there are plenty of places to sit. i haven't been there enough to try other items but I'm hoping to stop by again and check out more of their options.

Love this little local coffee place. The chihuahua and I sometimes walk down here and sit outside and drink coffee and people watch. The staff is super friendly and there is def a group of "regulars." Supporting local businesses is important and I will gladly give them my money over Starbucks. The prices are much better than Starbucks and the coffee is better, too.

At first glance this just looks like another run of the mill coffee shop. It is just another run of the mill coffee shop. Their coffee was average. The outside seating was dirty and their was a guy sitting out front who I could smell from 8 ft away. Every time I have ever looked over at this place their are creepy people hanging out outside. For the inside it was clean and very spacious. As to the service, attitude, attitude. I used to serve coffee to and I don't talk to people like I'm queen of the desert. My sister and I ordered a cup of coffee each and my mom was standing there waiting for us and the girl behind the counter said to her, "Are you waiting for something." All attitude like. If you could hear my impression you would understand. Then for the bar area where you mix you had to ask for creamer or soy milk. Thinking about it more now maybe because those weirdos outside will probably steal it. If it gets busy in there though that must be a pain. I wasn't impressed. Luckily I don't drink coffee that often to actually care.

Great service, yummy coffee but not fond of the smoking outside. Bad for us all! I try my best to sit away from all the cigarette smoking people!

It's so nice to have a coffee option in Livermore other than Starbucks or Peet's. I love Panama Red! My boyfriend isn't much of a coffee drinker, but he will almost always get something from here if I need to stop and get my caffeine fix. The coffee is always good. I've never tried the pastries so I don't have an opinion on them. I can't say enough good things about the staff. They are always super friendly and efficient, and even have a sense of humor--I will tell them my name for my coffee, and then they will write "Not Rachel" on my boyfriend's coffee cup. I appreciate the humor :) I also appreciate the free wifi. But minus one star for the broken outlet(s) that have been broken for a long time and have not been fixed. Makes finding a place to plug in your computer difficult. And I LOVE that they are open late!

  • Makenna S.

Despite my desire not to like this place, I'm in here ALL of the time. The service is INCREDIBLE, as is the espresso. And the tea is out of this freakin world (and 99.9% of coffee places make godawful tea). They are always beyond accommodating (especially about their breakfast bagels and my food allergies... plus they don't judge me for my coffee order, which is ridic). They have a great selection of sugar-free syrups, I can always get a paper, and I have never even had to repeat my order. That is impressive. Plus, when I get a syrup in my latte, they don't put too much (or too little). Free wifi and always clean, well-stocked bathrooms and staff that remembers me and makes me smile are just bonuses. Seriously, ignore the hipster vibe. I wanted to hate them for it, but I can't. They're too good.

  • Jeff K.

Great atmosphere and vibe. Love to go there and people watch on a Sunday morning. House coffee is just so-so but for me the trade off is location and kind of a hippie vibe. It's great to go to a non-corporate coffee shop.

Lately I am loving Panama! I've been here before but lately have been reintroduced and forgot how great it is to hang out at the smaller known coffee shop in town. One of the first things *I* always notice when standing in line is the large poster board with high res photos of the staffers. It's a personal touch to introduce you to your barista and also offer a fun vibe. Obviously there's the usual perks of comfy seating, areas to bring along your pooch, wifi, and giant cookies... But this lil' coffee nook offers other entertainment as well, such as on weekends you'll most likely encounter religious mongers trying to preach their opinions, or any downtown festivals taking place with a front row seat outside. It's also a great spot to meet for a date when you need AM caffeine. :) For me, Panama is an "experience" and one I choose over the larger retail coffee chains. If we're talking about the quality of coffee, you can't beat the hand pulled style shots and other quality measures taken in similar comparison like Peet's. Very good drink quality, as well as smoothies available for girls like me that like to get something a little more unconventional.

  • Jennifer I.

Good variety of drinks at low prices. The coffee smelled good, although I only drank a tea. They have a lot of loose leaf teas. Service is quick and friendly. I like the vibe of the restaurant - very casual, comfortable, and it's clear that the management cares about and respects their employees.

Great spot to getaway and enjoy some time with your favorite book. Been here twice this week, the Blanco Mocha and Coconut Mocha are absolutely deliscious! The locals are eh, but the playlist and staff Rock!

Great little cafe in the heart of Livermore. Laid back, nice energy balance, plentiful menu, friendly customer service. Love how they post photos of their employees on the wall. I sense pride and pleasure in their work. And, as a fan of iced tea, I got THREE choices for tea of the day. Nice! Will come back.

We have been here a couple times now, and the pastries, smoothies and coffee beverages are tasty at an acceptable price. Two times though the credit card readers have been down and they've only accepted cash which is a little annoying. Especially because one of the times was when I had JUST gone into labor and was trying to grab a smoothie on the way to the hospital. Bad timing Panama Red. Bad timing. There is a hipster vibe going on, which is kind of fun at times, and annoying at others, like when the sceney teenagers want to sit RIGHT next to the doors and smoke. As a non- smoker with a puppy and an infant I find that EXTREMELY annoying and wish the staff here would make them move elsewhere. Otherwise this place is a nice spot downtown to hangout.

  • Lisa H.

Panama Red is the best local coffee shop EVER! The look of the place is small but easily worked with as far as seating goes. The chiars are damn comfy. The service is nice with friendly baristas and tasty fruit teas for more than a reasonable price. I always get the citrus hibiscus tea with a splash of apple juice and it is GOOD. There's a fairly interesting mish-mosh of people that go to this place so its easy to get along with people and maybe find a coffee shop friend for life! Okay, that sounds cheesy, but just go with it! Thursday evenings are the best time to go, in my opinion.

What really impresses me about this place is we moved to Livermore 2.5 years ago, and the same people still work there. They must be doing something right. A lot of their roasts are on the medium/dark end, but they're really good; the pour overs are good, lattes are good, and their freshly baked goodies are always delicious (and run out early!). It gives downtown character, and my wife and I have definitely grown to become regulars and appreciate this place.

    (5)
  • Lily R.

Love the coffee, desserts and locale..now for the flipside..clean the bathrooms, the place is a pig sty! No paper towels, except the dirty ones covering the floor, tp is low and it looks like it hasnt been scrubbed in weeks.

We often go here after Costco shopping or anytime we are in the area to get coffee. They brew fresh ground coffee which is really well prepared. However, we can't say the same for the cappuccino : ( The atmosphere is really great. Lots of chairs and tables for the customers. Outside seating is also available which draws in more people. They have local musicians now and then performing at Panama and a wall for artist and business owners to display their cards. Place is pretty popular for all ages and good place to hang out... and sometimes it's hard not to overhear other peoples conversations.

Ok tea selection, almond milk is a plus, and employees seem nice. But, not a single vegan thing to eat in the joint - not even a banana or bag of chips. For an independent coffee shop they really need to work on thinking outside the (snack) box.

  • Erika G.

To know what real coffee tastes like come here not $bux. It stronger and has a deeper flavor with rich notes that take over your tastebuds. I enjoy my coffee more when I order from here. Not just drinking it for caffine fix. I really love their coffee but don't have a chace to come here often because of parking and time. Staff is super friendly when I go in. My favorite time of day to come in is early. VERY early. Its sunny, nice adn cool out around 630am and no hood-rats hanging out. It mellow and chill. Perfect for me.

  • Cathryn C.

Coffee is great here, but the pastries or breakfast items available leaves little to be desired. But it's acceptable if you're just using wi-fi, sipping coffee without it being a Starbucks feel. Has the ambience of a humble coffee shop minimalist.

  • Michelle D.

Awesome place! Great atmosphere, calming music for early morning. Was especially happy to hear they had almond milk. Yummy almond milk latte! Also gluten free banana bread-I am in heaven!

  • Gina C.

Panama has the best Chai in town. They brew their own (unlike the major chains in town) daily. It is consistently good. I love supporting local independent business and the contribution they make to the fabric of a community. Panama also seems to be the only coffee shop in town offering Almond Milk. I know the norm seems to be Soy Milk as an alternative to the dairy option, but it is nice to see a coffee shop with an open minded approach to satisfying their customer's requests.

Best. Cappucino. Ever. Foam is super stiff and espresso is smooth. I've also bought coffee beans here for a gift, but the price is kinda steep, i was pretty surprised. 1 lb. for $16. They also have lots of seating, but not a lot of comfy chairs to settle down into. The interior is not the fanciest or most well kept, but their coffee sets this place apart. This place is the closest thing you'll find in Livermore to a hipster cafe, on most evenings there are groups of college kids hanging out at the outdoor tables.

Always a fan of supporting local businesses so we gave Panama Red a try. The feel of the place is warm and has plenty of seating inside and out. The staff was friendly enough but the espresso was just okay and the blueberry muffin I tried was undercooked. I'll pass on this the next time i'm in town.

I am a huge fan! I work at Livermore School of Dance a few blocks down and I walk over to Panama for my breaks between teaching classes. All the staff members are super friendly and I always seem to run into people I know. Some days I easily spend several hours reading in one of the big comfy arm chairs. Their lattes are unbeatable, around Christmas time I was addicted to the gingerbread one but until December comes around again I also adore the vanilla. They also always come with beautiful designs on top adding that extra bit of charm. Their bagel breakfast sandwiches, breads, and pastries are also fantastic. I have never ordered anything from Panama that I didn't like and since I became a semi-regular I have become "panama spoiled" and won't set foot in a Starbucks. Hands down one of my favorite spots to be in Livermore.

  • Ashley S.

Great location right downtown and in a good spot to people watch. I usually go here with friends to catch up and I always order the vanilla bean breeze, no whip, no beans. Super yummy and waaay better than other places' equivalents. You can't go wrong with any of the breezes, but must say their mixed coffee drinks (latte, mocha,etc..) are a little strong for me. I do like brewed coffee here too, which I drink black btw, so don't ask why the other drinks are too strong for me, its a mystery to me too.

  • Alma D.

I love this place and will always think of it as Panama Bay, it's former name. I've been coming here since I moved up here, about 8 years ago. This is the place to go where you get quirky, upbeat customer service and they remember your name/favorite drink. This has been my favorite hangout to do homework (when I was finishing up college), to meet up with friends, and just hang out by myself to people watch. Love the coffee, the location, and of course, the people that work there. Oh, and you get to know the "regulars" there too! I recommend the Carmelita and the Bianco Mocha...yum! Oh, and George, he's somewhat of an icon there.

Whenever I'm in Livermore I always end up here afterwards. It's a small quaint coffee shop with really good vanilla lattes (my drink of choice). You can spend hours here just talking or people watching. I've been here a few times and every time the staff has been very friendly and helpful. It's the quintessential downtown coffee shop.

    (5)
  • AJ B.

I really wish this place was better. It has the potential to be the only 3rd wave coffee place for miles but just doesn't deliver. The staff never has their eye on the pour-over stand, and drinks like the cappuccino are lacking the thick creamy foam you get up in the northwest. Too bad.

Sunday was my first time visiting Panama Red. I tried the Ginger spice tea, it was amazing. The service was friendly and the wait was very short. I'd love to go back and try the other flavors of tea available.

If you want to experience lively Livermore downtown during the weekend, this is the place to go. They make fresh coffee by grinding the bean for each order. I normaly get their latte or the regular decaf. They also provide free wifi. I can easily spend couple of hours reading a book here. Good location for people watching.

Love this place, they always have great live music, promotional events, and well priced premium coffee. The staff are very friendly and quick; which we all know is essential when cranky America hasn't had their caffeine fix yet. My favorite part about the shop is its comfortable atmosphere, it's a great place to think or get some work done. Second to none in Livermore.

  • Aaron W.

Been coming to Panama Red since we moved to Livermore in 2010. Starbucks sucks. Peets is great. Panama Red is much more Peets than Starbucks except it is a small local business with a local flare. The staff is always friendly. The morning regulars are easy to spot. I can only comment on their black coffee and Nonfat Latte, but Panama Red is a solid local business.

    (5)
  • Amy J.

They used to call this place Panama Bay. I'm not sure why they changed the name. Maybe the owners are Jerry Garcia fans? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pa… That said, I love the fact that they don't charge extra for soy milk. I know other coffee shops charge as much as 30 cents extra so I appreciate not having to shell out more because I'd rather have soy. The chai isn't as sweet as I'd like it but it's worth stopping in here if you're looking for a comfy coffee shop. Still as great as I remember it.

Panama is a cool little independent coffee shop on the main drag in downtown Livermore. Nice to see that every place hasn't been taken over by the Starbucks/Peets of the world. 5 stars for their location and the easy going-ness of the place. It's right on the corner and you can hang out inside or outside and people watch. Totally relaxed place to come and enjoy a coffee. Prices are on-par with other coffee shops. The pastries are good. Not out-of-this-world, but good solid patries. The coffee is about the same. Good. I'm not sure if it was just a weak double shot, or what, but my drink wasn't quite as strong as I'm used to. I can't really remember how my other drink tasted before so, I'll chalk it up to an oops. Johnny

First time at this great coffee house. At 2pm on a Friday, it was pretty busy so I was curious to try their coffee. Had an iced Cono, Ethiopian and it was the best iced coffee I have ever had that I did not make myself at home. For the Cono coffee, you choose the type of coffee from a list, and the staff can make suggestions and tell you about each one. The coffee you choose is then ground and made by the cup just for you in minutes. Shared a sip with my friends, they agreed it was the best ever! Won't ever pass this place up when I am in the area.

Holy smoking cow. Starbucks coffee can be bitter. Pete's coffee can be bold. Panama Red is...neither bitter, nor slap in your face bold. Their cuppa Americano was strong enough yet had a light sweetness...amazingly good. Adding Panama Red to my coffee house rotation. Wish it was on my way to work and I'd be more of a regular customer.

  • Gabriel C.

They make a good cup of coffee here. I had the triple Americano that was fuel baby! It took me out of this world. It truely was a great cup of java. A couple things that went wrong here though. There are people swarmed around the entrances smoking cigarettes. I think most were patrons, but some looked like people just sitting around conversating My wife is pregnant and this is just not cool. I thought California had a 15 foot law that smokers had to abide by. The second instance was some dude setting up a guitar or something near the stage. He flat out shrugged me to get to the exit before us. It was a strange day for rudeness. There coffee and service is good here, but I really hope the monitor where people are smoking. I will be back to try them again.

Like the idea, initially, not too clean, alot of dust, but the regulars and residents flock to here! I have one of the original little mugs for espresso with the Panama logo on it to this day. Kinda warm in there, but hey, this really is a local place to go. They even allow group meetings here, and it is hipster style, but that's okay. Makes it unique and unlike Peet's so it is alright and OK. They kick out the orders fast as they can, not everyone is on the same page. But they do a good job for a non-corp enviroment. I hope they stay here in Livermore for a long time, Just clean up the cobwebs and dust more often, that's all. Good for them. Pastries are ok. Roasting, I do not know.

Best coffee in town. The ambiance is great and the staff is very friendly as well. During the warmer months I crave their "frapuccinos"--WAY better than Starbucks! Only drawback is parking is hard to find.

Great coffee! Moka Java is my fav. The chocolate croissant is sooooo good, my once a month treat, homemade at the store not delivered and stocked. Carmelita is another one of my top drinks, they blend coffee beans in..frap style or iced. Any bean they sell can be served drip pressed style. Feature live music some weekend nights. Cozy inside and patio seating. Great downtown location.

  • John G.

Just ordered a cappuccino to go. So disappointed. Served in an enormous 12oz cup. Way too much foam and milk proportionately to the amount of espresso. A Cappuccino should be 6oz MAX or guess what - you're not making a cappuccino. I should have driven the 1/2 hour to Oakland to go to Blue Bottle. No difference in product here vs Starbucks. Posted photos of the cappuccino are totally misleading.

Back again!! Whole family loves this place during our walks downtown. Daughters love the hot chocolate... and the smoothies that they say are better than Jamba Juice. Wife loves the coffee as well. Staff is great... and talented ... my wife also loves the creative designs on her cappacino. 3 Star rating would be a 5, if not for all the smokers that hang around the outdoor seating. Sad, but the smell does impact the overall experience significantly.

The Gist: Has everything any cafe-goer appreciates: Free wifi, good coffee selection freshly brewed, your choice of bean, pastries, seating, windows, clean bathrooms, interesting decor. The Service: Friendly, welcoming, efficient The Food: I asked the barista what he would recommend if it was my very last cup of coffee of my life. He humored me with an Ethiopian blend, which I drank black (meaning, I didn't need to drown it with stuff) I wanted to try a pastry for the sake of Yelp, but I already ate lunch. Next time! The Atmosphere: I'm honestly not from the area and being a stranger, couldn't really tell what kind of people I would be met with, but walking in I felt warm and relaxed. Walls are painted with a warm hue, emanating the sense of coffee in the morning or right after dinner on a summer evening. The barista was friendly and I felt this was a good place to park. The cushioned seats by the long window gave the impression of 'un-order, make-shift, comfort, chill' I'm glad for any word suggestions, as my vocabulary is limited. An interesting population of people to watch. A lot different from the population in Los Altos/San Diego/Merced, but they're friendly. Bikers meets metro meets punk meets middle-income families meets beatniks? Or maybe my coffee was just really strong...All I can say for sure is, the cars here are pedestrian friendly.

A longtime fav -- Panama Red is my first choice for coffee in the Tri-Valley (btw: ditto for the Diablo Valley and Panama Red @ Concord square!). It's their combination of consistently good lattes & mochas --- great espresso; not watered down...unless you request -- cool baristas, relaxed ambiance, and eclectic music (Radiohead to Sinatra ...literally; and I've heard some great live bands on Fri/Sat). They have good tea as well...I hear :-). Can't really comment on the food, except to say the macadamia white chocolate cookies are killer. Panama's also a social hub for downtown Livermore -- apparently all ages; weekday/weekend doesn't seem to matter much. Now with First Street Alehouse across the street, its getting harder and harder to make it home on a Friday night. My one complaint: wifi remains consistently inconsistent; so make a new friend, read an extra book...or bring mifi.

I am not much help when it comes to these fancy coffee, blended, sweet beverages but I did have a cup of the brewed coffee and it was really good! My friend got a vanilla bean breeze, with beans... I tried it and it was enjoyed it, just not really pleasing to my particular taste buds. The atmosphere is relaxed and the employees were really friendlly.

Great local coffee shop with a cool hipster vibe. Like to go on the weekend and check out the crowds. Always seems popular and their coffee is good. I order the 'Panama Red' which is drip coffee with a shot of espresso. LIke a caffeine bomb! I realized too late that they make paninis. I will have to return to try sometime.

I know my favorite coffee shop is right down the street, but I love Panama Bay! It is like Berkeley, but in Livermore! The staff is super friendly, the coffee is great, and they have been here longer than the "P" place. When I am in downtown Livermore...this is it!!

Panama Red...... it's not you, it's me. OK. It's you. You have a horrible habit of attracting the gross, stinky, hippy-types. And I don't like smelly hippy funk hanging out in my nostrils whilst I'm enjoying my coffee. Who knew that Livermore had a stinky hippy population? Well, if someone wanted to take them out, all they would have to do is level PRC. I'm not condoning such actions. I'm just sayin'......

Great atmosphere without being too hipster, excellent drinks (try the heavy metal or tuxedo mocha), and really great staff. This place is even worth going out of the way for!

A rock solid anchor to the revitalized downtown area. While many of the shops near by have recently been shuttered up or re-opening as a swank wine country destination, Panama Bay is abuzz with energy of neighborhood denizens meeting and greeting. Seating indoors and outdoors comfortable and relaxing. Decent selection of baked goods and a happy lot of staffers serving up coffee drinks and chatting up the customers. My only demerit would be for lack of coffee creamer options. I just saw half and half. I don't expect cafes to have twenty options including soy and non-fat milk, but it would have been nice if they had one or two lower fat options.

Oh Panama Red, why are all your baristas always so rude and snappy at the customers? Seriously though, that is one of my biggest pet peeves about coffee shops. There is a stigma about coffee places and it's that you'll experience rude customer service and this place is continuing that idea. I really like their teas and ice teas but it's just not worth it.

Mocha breeze with coffee beans = yum!! This is the local coffee house of livermore that isn't a huge chain like Starbucks or Peets. Nice place to read a book or chat with friends, and it's right in the center of downtown so you can go shopping, watch a movie, or grab a bite to eat.

This place seems pretty cool. Friendly staff, tasty coffee, free Wifi and live bands on Thursdays. Their prices seemed a bit high but not astronomical. I'll definitely be back.

Very nice and busy place. Workers are very polite and coffee is outstanding. Very high quality coffee beans. Its in the middle of the busy downtown of Livermore. This place is mostly crowded, but they get their job done.

I'm typing this at a Starbucks, having given up on Panama Red Coffee Co. As my first experience there, it was pretty bad. There were no pastries or anything available to eat (it is mid-afternoon, perhaps the timing is bad?). The coffee was so-so, really nothing special... The staff disappointed me. The guy at the counter seemed incredibly rushed and cold despite there only being a few people there. It is literally 101 degrees outside right now, but there were some people filming something and required that one of the windows be open fully. None of the staff said anything, despite the inside becoming very hot and the numerous flies buzzing around... My complaint is that none of the staff seem to be taking care of the customers beyond serving out coffee. Where is this awesome service the other reviewers are talking about? The nail in the coffin was the basically unusable internet... I counted four laptops in the cafe. The internet should not be struggling... the guy next to me kept sighing and clicking refresh on his browser, so I know it isn't just me. I like going to a cafe to do work, but I suppose Panama Red isn't that kind of cafe. I would give this place 1 star, but I think perhaps some unfortunate circumstances combined to give me a bad experience here... But really... Mediocre coffee, useless internet, uncomfortable atmosphere, and meh staff were all that I saw.

This place is pretty fun to just hang out at. While in-between classes at Las Positas I would often go here and enjoy a good coffee and the free wifi. It's pretty much Starbucks price, and let's be honest- my job isn't killer. But the people are friendly and will recommend their favorite drinks, sandwiches, ect. The laid-back atmosphere and great location make it all worth it for me! I love sitting either outside, or by the windows along the right side of the shop when you enter on the 1st street side. It's nice to people-watch, listen to your favorite tunes, and catch up on all that schoolwork, facebooking, or what have you. It's a nice chill place! Definitely a favorite.

Their coffee is unique. There are many different kinds that you can choose to explore the new taste. I recently stop here and was wanting something different. Usually I would go for something caramel, but today I tried the mint mocha and it was so good. Their coffee were freshy brew and the staffs were friendly. I had had a bad experience trying new flavored coffee and was afraid to try for a while, to my surprise, this coffee shop change my fear and I'm so in love with it now.

Panama Red is one of my favorite coffee joints to visit and lounge in. All of the staff seem to be pretty friendly and helpful. I love coffee black and when I find a place that has amazing coffee beans, it makes my heart smile. Another plus is that Panama Red has a sort of homey feel to it, this was even present on my first visit. I feel like it's a place where people can't help but flock to and just find themselves hanging out. I guess it's just another cozy, heartwarming, and magnetic coffee house that draws you in...no big deal :)

What a great place! There's nothing I love more than walking into a coffee shop with coffee enthusiast geeks like myself. These people LOVE their coffee and take it semi-seriously. The atmosphere is fun and the staff look like they LOVE their job. There's nothing worse than getting your bubble popped by someone handing you a cup of what SHOULD be a great cup of joe by someone who hates life...

Next on my review redemption tour: Panama has done a better job of policing their business. Yeah there are still stragglers who take up seating without ordering anything, but at least they are acting more respectful. I walk my dog by often and people are super friendly towards him. He is an old fella who just loves to be petted. Take-out coffee has become a luxury for us lately; I'm just glad there is an option to the cooperate places...

We were just looking for a little good coffee on our Livermore Valley Wine Tour this Easter Sunday, which was met with a little more disappointment than success - not many wineries were open, and weren't exactly disclosing that fact to everyone. Not to mention that it was raining off and on that day and we were a little tired by midafternoon. Enter Panama Red - we had never been to downtown Livermore, and it looked like a likely place. It's your typical friendly corner coffee shop, or maybe atypical, since you don't see that kind of thing all the time. It's something like Actual Café on San Pablo in Oakland - you're actually supposed to interact with people, (though they have free WiFi if you want to laptop or iPad it up too) and it's a friendly, welcoming vibe. It doesn't hurt that they make a sweet, tasty mocha. A great stop on a wine tour or if you're just in downtown Livermore.

Delicious drinks! Got a Royal Breeze and a Jamaican Breeze. Both were ready pretty quickly and were just the right level of sweetness for iced coffee, not too syrupy. I'm still not sure what was in either of them but I'd go back here and order them again. The girl working the register wasn't particularly friendly but whatevs.

I recently moved back to the East Bay and was jonesing for some real coffee (read not Starbucks). I am really stoked to have found this place. The coffee is awesome and the staff knows their coffee. I gotta say, I just drink coffee: no dessert in a cup for me. The coffee here is fresh and they don't burn it when they roast it. I agree with others that it's dingy, like you shouldn't have to hold the door shut when yo go to the bathroom. So, I usually grab a cup and go...

+ Friendly staff. + They obviously support local business (very Yelpy) - see board. + HUGE, delicious lattes. + Comfy leather chairs. + Free wifi. + Legit outdoor seating. They get 4 stars because their pastry selection leaves something to be desired.

I stopped into Panama Red Coffee Co yesterday morning while waiting for a few other local businesses to open. I think I walked in an alternate entrance, because it was a bit difficult to navigate the tables/chairs/Sunday morning crowd in order to find the front counter. The staff seemed pleasant and the coffee (black, no room for cream!) was delicious. I'll definitely be back if I'm ever in the area.

Stumbled in here before a date. The place had a cool vibe and I saw that they offer live music. The barista was nice and they serve up a good cup of joe. If ever back in downtown livermore I will return. If there is music and it's good, this might be my favorite coffee shop on 580.

Not sure what all the hype is for here. I am always on a search for a good non-chainy coffee shop, however, this missed the mark for me. Over priced, I know, so is Starbucks, but at least that seriously tastes better than this. Not my cup of tea, ha. So my husband and I came here after lunch on Saturday since we were so close. There were about 4 people in front of us, but we were already there and after driving by this joint so many times I thought I'd find out for myself why it was so packed. I didn't. I ordered the chai latte and the husband ordered a white mocha and a cookie. Thankfully their cookie saved them, thus 1 star. (That and you can't give zero stars) We waited at least 10 minutes. Finally I heard them call my name, oh I mean, something close to my name, apparently the dude who took my order has never heard of my very normal, very common name. However, this coffee snob, had heard HER name apparently, swipes my drink and goes to walk away. Me: "Uh you were not in front of me, that is mine, (pointing to my name)." Her: "No, this is mine, trying to swipe my chai!" Coffee making dude: oblivious. She was out the door with MY chai! Unbelievable!!!!! Coffee making dude calls 2 more drinks out before I approach him again asking for my drink. He says he already called it out, prompting yet another explanation to him about the snob who took it. "Oh, did that like, happen just now?" Then he asks if I will take what was supposed to be hers, uh no. Ridiculous. Fix it and fix it now. Turned into at least a 20 minute trip. I know it wasn't dude's fault the snob took my drink but nothing was offered to me in order to fix the situation either. So glad I held my tip back until I got my drink. Which in this case meant, it was still mine. Cookie was good but the Kirkland ones at Costco are better. This Saturday I am sipping coffee from my Keurig brewer. From now on I will continue to only drive by here, not stop. Oh and fyi, the weirdos hanging out in front of your store are not helping. Didn't feel like Livermore AT ALL.

We need independent places like this. Got a bianca mocha which was quite nice. My hubbies' latte was ok. It's a more mild latte, not the richer style. Nice location downtown. You can sit outside and enjoy the vibe.

I don't come here often, but this place is pretty great. I like the different options for seating [there are plenty of choices inside an out, table or big comfy chair, shaded or sunny]. The staff have always been friendly and the coffee is better than Starbucks... plus this has the most personality out of all the coffee shops I've been to in Livermore [which are only Starbucks, Peets and Noahs Bagels]. Also, I was pretty stoked to get a medium latté and a toasted bagel and cream cheese for $3 and some change.

Yum! Great local small business. The food and drinks are awesome. I love coffee and tea and they have a decent selection of both. The location is great and the staff is always friendly and patient when I can't decide what I want. My husband plays live music there sometimes and I always try to accompany him. The people watching is fun; downtown Livermore is always entertaining. If you are looking for way more than you average Starbucks experience, buy local at Panama Red!

Kudos for tons of coffee options and really cool baristas. Oh and for some pretty hip coffee music playing while you order up a hot cup. Panama is a true coffee house complete with snazzy types clicking away at their computers to the casuals decked out with earphones and iPhones in tow. The line was long for a weekday which I think is a sign--their coffee is a force to be reckoned with. I ordered a cup of the house blend. Strong, flavorful, with cream and a dash of sugar. I watched the men behind the counter at work, pouring and pressing, and chatting among the filters. Would love to come back again on one of their open music nights. Chill vibe, plenty of places to sit, and lots of window space letting in some natural light and sidewalk people watching opportunities.

I always walked past this place, but I decided to try some tonight. I got a hot chocolate and it was pretty good. The thing I liked the most about it was the live music and the whole atmosphere of this place. Very cozy and comfy.

I was running late, and couldn't make it to Starbucks, but i badly needed caffeine. So,I stopped here, after getting pass the welcoming homeless community on the bench, I made it inside. The menu was so confusing, it was so messy on the counter and you couldnt even see the employee behind the registrar. I am always up to trying new places, but i dont think I will ever go there again, maybe unless really desperate lol

Pluses: large space, plenty of soft seating in addition to hard chairs and tables, two restrooms, almond milk in addition to soy available, good service, sense of community involvement, vegan scones. Minuses: a half hour Wheels Transport bus ride from closest BART Station, vegan scones sell out early, but at least Clif Bars are there for a backup.

Location is great. Its a fun place to be at. The problem I have is the drinks are the same for ever. No real changes or fun additions. Nothing really does it for me here. The coffee is good but I like to get drinks that are fun to drink rather then plain coffee. I think that it would be fun to get some new drinks for a change. Especially in the summer....come up with some low fat drinks. Maybe add some brown sugar, vanilla powder....rock sugar....at the bar. Use Ice Cream base for some of the breeze drinks, because they are too syrupy and quickly separates, but the blended coffee beans are good......theres a great wholesale coffee company in Watsonville (coffeola....something like that) that would be fun to add to your coffee list....(rocket fuel is a good one they make)....maybe have a blended drink that uses Red Bull......Juice with soda water.......just some stuff I would like to order thought I would throw that out there....good luck

For coffee shops in Livermore, this place takes the cake. They have everything a coffee shop should have in terms of drinks and they have a small assortment of smoothie type drinks. Skip the baked goods unless you need it - they're pretty blase. Ambiance is pretty good. I've never encountered the high school crew, but I've tended to be here in the mornings. As for the very few homeless on Livermore's streets, let's be real here people. There are homeless people and they congregate on main streets like 1st St. Their presence doesn't ruin your day (and they're not even around all that much). Bottom line - beats Starbucks on most measures and for a small town you aren't going to beat it.

  • Brian B.

Surprise to read some of the reviews lately. I still come here all the time and love it. Yes, it's become a bit of a Livermore High hangout in the evenings but I don't mind that. I've never seen a homeless person and often see the Livermore city employees policing garbage and the like.

Stopped by based on other Yelper reviews and was terribly disappointed. Service and staff were great but unfortunately the beverages could not hold their own. The group I was with had ordered NF latte, soy latte and chai latte. The regular and soy latte were 'over creamy'. Couldn't taste the punch of the Brazilian espresso. The Chai Lattes were very watery and lacked spice. Although the drinks weren't up to snuff, the barista was nice enough to apologize and substitute for what they had on drip.

Clean, good coffe, nice enviroment and... FREE WIFI! what else do you need in a coffe shoop?

    (5)
  • Corinthia C.

I used to go to this place every once in a while because they had free wifi, but think it's a scuzzy little shop. The hot chocolate is pretty tasteless and very sugary. Not their specialty. Their snacky foods are also very sugary and/or buttery. I hear that their coffee is good (others in my family are fans of Capt. Kirk and Ethiopian harrar). The shop itself is in a cute location. BUT it catches all of the western sun with the west-facing windows. It is blazing in there in the summer. There are also flies inside (no screens on the windows) and the furniture can be grimy. A lot of the tables and chairs wobble, too. The fake plants are hideous. I guess one could say the place has atmosphere . . . but I think it's just scuzzy.

  • Shan S.

This is always a great place to go to for coffee and to just hang out. The staff is friendly and they always make great drinks. Also it is a great place to just hang out for a few hours, as on the weekends there are local artists singing. So you get great coffee, good atmosphere, and good music. What else can you ask for. You know it's a popular hang out place just by the number of people hanging out with friends during the weekend.

  • Afram K.

A nice alternative to Starbucks and Peets, though perhaps not as convenient to get to. Their coffee--which is always up to personal taste, of course--is decent. Nothing to rave about, but nothing to scoff at either. They have a pleasing variety of treats if you're looking for a snack, but nothing super unique. Free Wi-Fi is a nice bonus. The workers are eccentric but fun and interesting--better than the "blah" types you might find at other places. Seating is abundant and appropriate for a variety of different customers--ranging from students to socializers. There is the occasion that a few unruly punk kids hang around and act fairly inappropriately, but it's never for more than 5-10 minutes, and not such a big deal--but something worth mentioning. This is likely due to the location in downtown, as the other coffee shops in Livermore don't seem to have this problem.

I love this place though getting parking can be a challenge sometimes. Several times I had to go somewhere else to get coffee because I could not get to the coffee house. the taste is good overall. I also love the live music and how much they support the community!

This place has some good coffee but nothing really spectacular. What makes this place unique is that it also functions as a pretty chill hangout spot for livermore night life. They even have an open mic some nights!

I have been coming here for some time with a friend who lives in town. This has been one of her favorite coffee hangouts. It is a kitchy local coffee house on a corner that draws a crowd of all ages. One of the fun things about this place is that they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The types of music vary so you just never know if it will be jazz, motown, the blues or something else. Unless you read the board and know the musician already then it will a surprise to you. The place is long and narrow and full of comfy chairs and tables so it can get a bit crowded but everyone is friendly and don't mind sharing tables. The staff is always nice and offer good service. Last night I ordered my coffee and upon taking a sip I realized I had forgot to ask for non-fat milk and I mentioned it and I was immediately asked if they could remake it for me. NICE! I like to read their communication board as it has many postings of local events and entertainment. It is here a few years ago I found out about a great event that my friends and I attend annually. I think this type of coffee house should be in every town. Go for the coffee on a Friday or Sat. night and stay for the music.

Panama Red is a nice alternative to Starbucks and though the clientele are not exactly a mold I tend to fit into, I enjoyed the vibe. Didn't stay for the music but loved the cushy chairs and the little design in my milk foam. I would definitely return when I'm looking for some coffee and a chance to hang out or utilize the wifi etc.

  • Jennifer D.

Panama Red is a great little place. The staff is friendly, the drinks are good and the snackies are...snackalicious. Whether I am meeting a friend for coffee, hanging out listening to live music or dropping in with a coworker for an office escape, Panama is always a great choice!

    (4)
  • Jon B.

Customer service here is fantastic. Probably one of the friendliest places you can go in town. The only thing better than the awesome customer service are the drinks. They don't make it until you order it, and what's that, your drink isn't exactly how you want it? Boom! Redo! They will make it up to you... By any means necessary. The place is held together by a stellar management who hand pick their staff from highly qualified American workers! No illegals here! Strictly by the books. However the ruffians on the outside come in waves, the coffee shop has no real control over it. So dont waste your time or theirs complaining. Do something about it. Also if you are feeling some sort of pent up frustration and you just need to relax and have a drink or punch an overly pretentious hipster in the face this is the place to go do it. Also of you are homeless and for some reason are able to read this, of is not ok to take baths on the bathroom any more, they will find you, and end you. Now the place is in an older building and isn't perfect but they make up for it with killer drinks and awesome employes.

Great place to grab coffee. It's in the heart of downtown, so tons of people are always here. I'm a fan of their coffee, although it does tend to be a bit strong.

Panama is our family's favorite place to come for the Coffee and the Chai! Panama Red ROCKS over the other coffee shops! Never bitter, never bad..simply fabulous! Staff is very helpful if you are wanting to try something new. I especially enjoy the variety for lactose intolerant people, such as myself, of alternative Soy Milk & Almond Milk options. No one else offers that ever!!! Everything is really so yummie.... my girls just can't resist the dessert treats that are begging to be eaten. If we are lucky, we can find seating for the 4 of us to hangout inside to read, talk & relax. Outside seating is not an option for us, since it is 99% a smoking crowd... so we avoid that completely. My husband appreciates the WiFi, so he will come down, get a coffee and work for a change of scenery from the office. But most times we grab-n-go and walk around our beautiful downtown and enjoy sipping Panama Red's delicious brews.

Looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for my coffee "for here" in a mug. Didn't really seem to know what to do with soy milk, came out all curdled and weird looking. But it tasted pretty good still. Staff seem young and careless, and even with a near-empty cafe, the tables were all a mess.

Here's the thing... I go to coffee shops for coffee. Not for nightlife, wifi, "treats" or to get a late night booty call. That is why I confidently award the Panama Red Coffee Co 5 stars! I have never had coffee this good on the mainland. The white chocolate mocha was like drinking a cloud of heaven. Unreal.

It is always nice to have another coffee option instead of Starbucks which this city has far too many of. Coffee has always been consistently good, smoothies that are better than Jamba Juice and pretty good service. I don't quite fit the the under 25, chain smoking- pondering the meaning of life crowd that congregates here but that's okay and is why I get my coffee to go.

I have had good and bad experiences at this location, but the good have out weighed the bad by far. Sometimes when I have nothing better to do (so rare), I love to hang around on the nights when they have live music. I don't really care who's performing, I just enjoy live music. As far as drinks go, I would recommend their Carmelita. It's really yummy!! (Thank you George.) ... and their African Red Tea is pretty damn good too. Once in a while I will join the mob of youngsters and brave the elements in the outside seating area. Usually just to be a part of the local smoking community, but I'm a poser... I only smoke cigars. Panama is a great place in general to "people watch". And they seem to be dog friendly too! Pretty much every time I come by I have seen a doggy bowl filled with fresh water. Aint that sweet? Panama is sweet!

Very cool place to drink some good coffee and connect to the internet. It feels like how a coffee house should be: lots of choices to sit, some board games, good music and nice atmosphere. Plus the extra good bonus of free wi-fi - who could ask for more. The only thing to be aware about of is if you need to make a phone call you may want to go outside to hear better. Did I mention that they play music? :-)

Java Breeze + Coffee Beans= Yes please! Thank God for an Independent Coffee House in my hometown. I love how the Baristas are able to express their indiviuality through dress, piercings, tattoos, and hair. Great place to meetup with your long lost friends from highschool, great people watching. Honestly, this place is so down to earth that I just want to kick off my shoes and relax with my drink while listening to some good music. Sometimes they even have local highschool students jamming on acoustic guitar. If Panama Bay Coffee Co. were in a brawl with Starbucks then Panama Bay would kick the crap out of the Evil Coffee Empire. What is my hate towards Starbuck's you ask? Hmm don't get me started. Well here it goes, just venture into one and you will know what I'm talking about. Basically, I hate that there is no originality. You pay an arm and a leg for a fancy schmancy drink. The barista is not trained properly so will most likely screw something up. The iTunes playing on the flatscreen just drives me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God for Panama Bay, you are like a breath of fresh air. I came here on the weekend for coffee. I got your Java Breeze and I love how you grind coffee beans into my drink!!! I sat in your big comfy chair while humming to the lyrics of Death Cab for Cutie. My drink was delicious, blended coffee drink with coffee beans and whip creme. Totally got a buzz from the caffeine and loved it.

Thought I would like this place but its fake plants and dusty cobwebbed ceilings give it a very tired feel. The chai latte was barely warm and not very good. Chairs are very comfortable but overall not my favorite coffee stop. I would recommend the staff head over to San Francisco and check out some of the cool coffee shops such as Four Barrel or Ritual in the Mission district to get a feel for what a coffee shop should feel like. Should be very clean above all else.

ok.. let me start by saying.. I'm in love!!! I just moved to Livermore, and have been a Peetsaholic for years. This year I gave up Peets for lent, so off to Panama Bay Coffee Co I went ( I refuse to drink starbucks unless it's absolutley necessary) That is when I discovered a nonfat jamaican rum latte. OMG it's heaven in a cup!!! Delicious!!! The staff there is great, very friendly. My husband and I sat outside with our dog and just enjoyed the day! It was fantastic! Will definatley make this place our regular spot!!!!!!

Panama Red Coffee is as good as it gets. Its not just the best coffee in Livermore, its a great place to spend time with your family, best friends or a place to meet new ones. Enjoy a music night with bands that play your favorites. Perfect for the downtown stroll any day of the week.

One rather cool and spirited establishment. And George our barista was rather funny and entertaining. The downfall of my experience was ordering the house blend, and having to wait for a new brewing. And wait. And wait. And wait. Until my sis and I were standing around up near the counter, finally breaking the question, "still brewing?" That did help get my coffee to me, but still did not excuse the wait factor. Sure, I'll come back, but if I ever have to wait for my brew again, I'll, I'll ... Anywhoo, you get the picture. Awesome location, awesome spot to chill at.

This will always be Panama Bay to me... I don't like the change to "Panama Red". I love their coffee sooooo much!! I can also go there to do some work away from the office with some free wi-fi, super comfy seating and caffeine at my beck and call. Their music is horrible though, I avoid the place like the plague when people start setting up their guitars and stuff.

BEST coffee place around! I drive 20 miles round trip just to come here, hang out and relax. Truly an authentic coffee place, Noah is super talented, a one man show..watching him run the show, taking coffee requests, mixing drinks is just amazing. Between all that, he greets everyone with a smile. What talent! He makes this place rock! I will definately come here again again, no more large coffee chains for me. Wish they had a store in my area. Want coffee? This is certainly the place!

It's the best coffee shop in Livermore and the staff is really great. It may be a little inconsistant at times, but I prefer that to mediocre all the time.

I do like to support the local businesses and the coffee here is pretty good. I only gave it 3 stars because it doesn't have a great selection of pastries and also because some of the staff don't seem very clean. It is located in a nice spot down town

Love this place.. Ive been coming here for years and the staff is amazing. I've read from other reviewers that it has a hint of berkely and i must say that theyre right. Great service, pastries, and atmosphere. On Thurs, Fri, and Sat this awesome coffee shop has live local bands. Definitely a local spot.... At times it gets a little crowded with the local kids.

Slow service and too many wanna be hippies just taking up space. I like the ambiance of the "regulars" that are sitting and enjoying the company and coffee. The music that they have is fantastic. Good drinks, not great. Fairly slow service.

This has been a local hangout since I was in high-school and for good reason. The employees are always friendly and the atmosphere is, for lack of a better comparison, very Seattle. I thought I was ruined after enjoying the independent coffee shops in Washington, but Panama Bay is right up there in terms of quality. Their coffee is rich and has a more authentic taste than other places. But the biggest plus of all is the fact that Panama Bay supports local artists and allows them to perform occasionally. Helping our local music scene thrive deserves a high-five and I'll happily continue supporting Panama Bay so long as I can get a good ol' cup of joe and enjoy some creative talent while I'm at it.

hmmm this is a unique and friendly place. well, friendly if you're homeless or "emo," or a high school skater kid bummin some smokes off the older stragglers that hang out there too. the coffee CAN BE exceptional, and the vibe used to be great. just not what it once was =/

This is one of my favorite places in Livermore. It has become our regular hangout since we moved to this area. Reminds me a little of home (Oakland-Alameda area). Very diverse clientele, kick back atmosphere, friendly employees and great live music on the weekends. Good selection of the typical teas, coffee, smoothies, and muchies. Whatever your craving. This has become my favorite place to challenge company to a mad skills checker game or just sit back and relax.

Mocha are tasteless. The place seems cozy from outside but it is actually too small for being comfortable.

The first thing I noticed about this place was how everyone had their shirts off comparing tattoos and piercings... Just kidding ;) I've been coming to this cafe off and on for several years and it's always great to walk in the door. The people who work here are cool and friendly and occasionally entrancing. The coffee is good and strong (even stronger than my favorite Peet's brew) and they have a good selection of munchables. It's always nice to sit outside under the umbrellas and check out the L-town scene.

Customers or (people loitering) that go here think they're in some sort of elitist group. They go there to hang out with friends in small circular packs and are not friendly. They scowl and think "normal" people talking too loud on their cells or dressed differently than them will make their large brains explode. If this place was cleared out of these punk kids that are only there to be SCENE and heard it may be alright. Service is BS. The "baristas" are too busy talking to each other to fathom what's in your order. Forget how "nice" this menu looks, because half the ingredients are probably not in the drinks. Half these people that reviewed it are probably just friends of the employees, or punks themselves. Coffee is ALRIGHT, at best, but skip it for sure. Go to the more corporate Pete's Coffee down the street, at least their barista's have manners.

the localness of this place makes it all the more cozy and wonderful. i picked this place on a whim. my mom, who works in livermore, recommended it as a halfway point to meet a friend before we part ways for half a year. i ordered a medium iced biango (white chocolate) mocha and it was deeeeeelicious!! it wasn't too sweet, and the coffee was very rich. my friends and i sat outside in the beautiful weather under the shade. i will come here again to try the other drinks! the pastries looked deliciousssss.

Great funky atmosphere - almost "more Berkeley" than Berkeley. Nice smooth mocha. Nice welcome comfortable seating indoors and generous benches at the street. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Livermore.

When I drive through downtown, I always see people hanging out at this coffee shop, so I decided to go with my cousin and her boyfriend. Their coffee is good, but what seems to make this coffee spot so popular is the support of its community. I've never been to a coffee shop where it reminded me a little bit of Friends, where the group was always at Central Perks just hanging out. The night I went, there was a singer performing some songs on his guitar (like Phoebe). They also have some games for you and your friends if you need something to do. I did notice some younger kids hanging out, which I usually don't mind, except they were really immature and loud. But overall, a great place to hang out.

I like this place. The service is relatively quick considering it's a coffee shop, the product is good quality (the BEST chai latte I've ever had!) and the atmosphere of the store is welcoming. I like the live music they have, too. The only downer for me is the parking issue, they're located on First Street which is always busy. I want a coffee in the mornings but sometimes don't feel like walking for a block to get it !!

It's funny. No matter how many years I've been away from Livermore, I still see someone I know when I go here. It is the "Cheers" or "Central Perk" or Livermore. If the LLNL/early 20's part of my life were ever considered interesting enough to make it into a movie/sitcom/book, this place would totally be in it. After all, it is where "the rawest of Livermore culture" comes alive. I've grown very fond of this place over the years (and I remember when it opened). I have a plethora of stories (ask me about the restraining order being broken in front of my own innocent eyes) that involve this place. It is because of being alone at this place too many times that I learned that I must wear an invisible sign that reads, "I'm looking for baggage that goes with mine.*" because a lot of men have randomly bared their souls to me at this very coffee shop. My favorite was the guy who asked me, "I'm looking for a girlfriend. Where can I find one?" Or any stories that involve the tricycle guys who ask if I talk to toilets. Though the coffee is not my favorite, I will occasionally splurge on their version of the frappuccino. (It has ground beans in it). I will usually get one of their iced teas. They tend not to care if you bring outside food in. The baristas have that "displaced Berkelian in the suburbs" thing going on. As such, if I have time to kill in Livermore (and recent networking obligations have brought me there a bit lately), I will usually kill it here. I'm a Peetnik and there is a Peet's down the street. That says something. Laptop users beware. They do have WiFi. However, one of the few electrical outlets that I found was on the other side of a huge easy chair. Random feats of furniture moving were required in order to plug in my laptop last week. * La Vie Boheme, Rent

After a few hours of wine tasting... we HAD to get some coffee before we drove back to San Jose. I had never been here before but always see it when I drive on thru. We walked over ... went inside.... its pretty cool inside... but the tons of people outside... I figured it's some pretty good coffee. There is a young fella hanging behind the counter... and we stand there..and MIND YOU.. it was not packed in there......we are looking at all the different choices on the board on the wall and homeboy with curly red hair and glasses DARES to make a comment under his breath ..NOT knowing that I have supersonic hearing... and this is what he says, "goosshhhh..... (smacks teeth) like I have alll day to just stand here and wait on people" WHUT THE HECK???? AREN'T U IN THE CUSTOMER SERVICE BIZ AND U DONT WANT TO WAIT FOR PEOPLE IN A COFFEE SHOP THAT WAS NOT BUSY?? I looked at him and said oh my goodness I can't believe he said that??? I said it loud and he heard me... then I'm sure he realized that I did hear him say his funky remark.. and quickly changed and said ohhhh my I help u... I said yeah we are just standing here figuring what we want cause uh we have never been here before... and he proceeds.. ohhh ic..well then let me help YEAAHHH whut ever. Maybe we came in at a moment that he was in a funky mood? Maybe they are only used to regulard and no first timers? Who knows...but I didnt feel welcomed at all... I had decaf and it was ok.... London and his mom had double cappucinnos which they said were good... so I guess I have to go back and maybe get more of a friendly welcome :o(

Panana Bay makes me wish I was still in college. It's the perfect place to get a cup of coffee, chat or read. It very chummy, but clean! It reminds me of a pub but all coffee! It's the best coffee bar in the area. No doubt. Love it. The baristas are very friendly, chatty, patient and helpful. Oh yes, and the music is great, there's tons of seating, and the menu ... wow! They can make you drinks that even the snobbiest coffee-lover has never heard of. The prices are comparable to Starbucks. Great location too, they have a nice view of the recently remodeled 1st street.

This is more of a local hangout than a great coffee shop. They have allot of functions and a very loyal following, however, I am not one of them. I want to like this place but I just don't. It is small and there are no screens in the windows so all the people hanging out front smoking proves to be bothersome if you actually want to drink and eat (and I was a smoker but never enjoyed it while I ate or had a flavorful beverage). It seems alittle on the dingy side, but not gross. Prices are pretty average for a trendy coffee shop and coffee is actually only so-so. I think it just got so popular because of the overkill of Starbucks and Peets. I don't feel it is worth fighting downtown traffic for, but if I'm in the area and not going to be at the First Street Ale House, I might consider getting my coffee to go.

I love Panama Red! I have tried many of the drinks on the menu and nothing has disappointed me yet! I absolutely love the Royal. Coffee with toffee nut and caramel...can't be beat! If I feel like splurging, I will buy a Cono coffee. Nice and strong and delicious! I also really like the coffee with the espresso. Yum. Everything here is great and the staff is very friendly. Definitely my coffee house of choice!

  • Rena T.

The hubby and I use to go here every Saturday and Sunday morning. The clientele was interesting and made for good people watching. Things went downhill quickly and we moved on to another downtown coffee house. The outside seating area started to look like a small landfill; there were puddles of vomit to dodge as well as empty cigarette packages, containers of half eaten Chinese food and broken terra cotta pots oozing soil and half dead flowers. The smell alone was enough to make your stomach flip. This has become the local hangout for kids during the evening. They wear their hoodies and smoke their cigarettes, spit, litter, talk loudly and are sometimes rude to people walking by. If you're over the age of 25, mark this as a "pass" on your list of places to go. Peets isn't very far from Panama Red and their coffee is better.

My coffee of choice when I'm downtown, I'd much rather go there than the two chain shops nearby. Friendly staff, a very comfortable spot to hang out (especially since they expanded) and the best coffee around. Love love love the mocha breezes (with whip, no beans, please). Goes great with a visit to Donut Wheel!

If you live in Pleasanton or Dublin and you want the hipster-SF, non-corporate sit-outside-and-smoke, local-bands-on-the-weekends experience then you have one option and it is in Livermore.

Best coffee shop in livermore, FAR better than chains such as Starbucks and even Peets. Staff is *extremely* friendly and helpful, always humorous and cheerful. They learn your name in just a few visits, and the employees who have been working there for a while help the new employees learn the regulars' names/favourite drinks. I've been going there since it has opened in 1998, and have met every barista they've had, and I've never experienced a time when the service was bad. I can't wait for them to finish renovating, especially with their second espresso machine (and the waterfall in back!) - hopefully it will cut down on the lines soon. Coffee tastes great, and is not greasy or bitter like starbucks coffee almost always is. Baristas really get to know their customers, and will do almost anything you want with your drinks. Their smoothies are pretty darn good too!

Anyone who has any complaints about this place is a curmudgeon. The staff here is great. Especially, George! He's super friendly and an expert in making great coffee. Lots of outdoor seating and friendly people. There is a lot of community at this place that you won't find at Peet's or Starbucks up the street.

  • Michael D.

The coffee is good and it has a great sort of vibe to it. They have a great outdoor seating area into the downtown Livermore area, where you can just relax with your coffee, have some social times with friends, or whatever. If I had to be picky, it misses the fifth star only because it lacks some of those little details sometimes. The area away from the serving areas are often dirty (but the serving and prep areas are always clean), the bathrooms are hit or miss whether they're working or not, that sort of thing.

The best coffee in Livermore! Very trendy and offers a wide variety of drinks and ambiance. It's a great place to sit and relax, visit with friends and to listen to great music on weekend nights! I've never been there w/o seeing friends.

I really love this place. Livermore has such a diverse vibe for being located outside of the city. The baristas are pretty cool, and break out the unique tunes on Sundays (Eddie Murphy songs?). The drinks are fab and you can almost always get a table. Very cool shops located around there if you need to stroll while drinking your coffee.

PB's FOAM is great (MICROfoam in lil' ol' Livermore) and their music selection is nice 'n funky - I heard the Strokes 1st album the other day... I've NEVER heard that played in a store before... why not?! Also if any PB folks are reading, I love that you know my name & my order - makes me feel at home :o) ALSO my mom is alergic to everything on the planet and the staff really went out of their way to make her a great smoothie with no soy, milk, or caffein - wow!

I always drink coffee with cream and sugar but with their kona selections, I needn't do so! Great coffee selection and very hip. Our first visit there also had live music (Gabe Duffin- great, great Irish music!). Went back the next day to sit and read. The back part of the cafe is quiet, good area for reading or just relaxing.

i go there but for some reasons always leave a little upset or frustrated. the service has always been decent and the coffee good. my fav is the blanco steamer (white hot chocolate). my beef is with everything else. the place is always dirty. ever notice the mounds of cigarette butts and spit stains, along w/ fresh spit all over the ground outside. also over flowing garbage cans, overwhelming cigarette smoke and loud immature behavior w/ lots of inappropriate language. i think it's great that younger people have a place to hang out, but due to all the other stuff, it is impossible for me to go there w/ my son any other time of day other than the morning. i like to go for walks along first street in the evening. it's always a nice way to wind down the day and have frequently stopped here, to always feel this way. the last few times there has been a group of loud rude inappropriate drugged out adults. their worse than the kids. in fact one of them, was talking to me and my 3 year old and started talking about her private areas but using slag words. i know this is not the shops fault, but it's the people who hang out at coffee shops are who give it, its atmosphere. people go to coffee shops more for atmospere than they do for coffee, and this is not the atmosphere that i want my son to think is appropriate.

Panama Red is starting to take on its old time charm again. Slowly the younger more, obnoxious, crowd are being weeded out and people can finally start enjoying it again! Now people can start enjoying the neat little coffee house again. Time to bring back old clients!

I don't know, it is not my kind of crowd, but their coffes and smoothies are not bad. They have a good location and it is fun every now and then to go there and sit down.

When my co workers get me coffee I can bet every time that it will be Starbucks. When I buy myself coffee it's Panama's. It sound silly to but is very true when I say that this coffee has flavor. Everyone is really nice and the prices aren't too bad either. There can be a line depending on when you go but the coffee is well worth the wait.

After living in Livermore for several years, my wife and I finally decided to stop into Panama Red for a late breakfast snack. The person behind the counter was nice and our order was put in. We brought our dogs so we were limited to sitting outside and that is when it went down hill. The perimeter of this coffee shop is littered with cigarette butts. The ground is so filthy dirty, I didn't even want my dogs to sit on it. You would think that a place that has customers eating and drinking outside, they could pressure wash or even at the least sweep the outside are. That being set aside, I didn't go to get coffee and lung cancer. The law prohibits smokers from being within 50' of the entrance to a restaurant but there were several sitting a the tables next to the entrance. I would have expected an employee to come tell people they couldn't smoke there but instead one of them came out and lit up and started to chit chat. Maybe they don't clean the outside area because they know it'll just get dirty the next day, I don't know. I do know that I won't be coming back.

Panama Bay is a great place to get a cup of coffee and to just hang out. Its got a really nice atmosphere, and since the fairly recent remodeling, lots of room. The staff is really friendly o its easy to become a regular. To sum it up, I dont even like COFFEE and i like hanging out at this COFFEE SHOP. Thats how good it is. ps. Their chocolate milk is bomb.

I am sitting here enjoying a homemade chai tea latte (sub foam for whip, please) and I can't help but just write another review detailing my love for this place. The Beatles in the background are only making things better. The rain and wind outside and the kids hanging out, and the cars driving by make me feel like I could be in the city. Ahh, life is good. A moment ago there was a baby screaming on the opposite side of the shop and then some smart barista decided to crank up the music. Love it.

I went to panama bay the day it opened at todos Santos plaza. I met RICCI and she was the best. The drink assortment blew me away. Fruit smoothies, Iced coffee's with beans ground up in it. WOW ! I go get a coffee there every chance i get. I have turned all my friends on. Now they have stopped going to ( you know where) and go here instead... Go try it you will not be disappointed

Forget Starbucks...skip Peets...go for Panama Red (formerly Panama Bay). Not only are you supporting local business you also get a great downtown location, what is obviously a fun place to work and a killer white hot chocolate! I don't do coffee, so I'm almost more picky in my reviews because hot chocolate is usually ignored, but Panama Red gets it right!

I love this place! my favorite is the one in Brentwood but the Livermore one is pretty awesome too. Though it is a chain it is relatively small and all of the one's I have been too are pretty much consistent. Try the Carmelita, you won't regret it!

I love this place, I use to live on Starbucks coffee. I like Peets but there limited selection of syrups makes it a no go for me. PB, has great servers, great coffee and great hours. I love being able to go there at 10:55pm and get a late night coffee.

great coffee and atmosphere. I love the huge sliding windows! On summers evenings its soo nice to sit and have a coffee in an open breezy coffee house. Great diversity of drinks. Coffee, tea, flavored blended coffees and drinks...oh, and smoothies! yum Very friendly and accommodating staff.

Some of my best memories of growing up in Livermore involve Panama Bay so I'm a little biased. Thier black coffee is pretty good. Thier Mocha Breeze's and by far thee most supieror blended coffee drink. My heart will always belong to them.

This is my favorite coffee shop in town, and it beats the heck out of Starbucks for flavor, friendliness, and ambience. No matter what time, Saturday or Sunday morning, Saturday eveneing, or whenever, they always make you feel welcome, and will often greet you by name if you are a regular. The other nice thing is that they will often remember your drink, seems the more complicated the drink, the more of an effort they make. It's nice that they also offer nice cold smoothies for those times when a hot latte is not in the mix. PB rocks!

    (5)
  • M T.

It used to have better coffee. The location, especially on a nice spring evening to listen to good, live music cannot be beat. The last several times though the wife and I visited, the coffee was bad. It was old, having been on the heater for a while and one time, I ordered a regular coffee, it was cold. Of course they replaced it, and the crew is friendly, but I have yet to get a cup like that at Peet's. The ambience gets a 5 star rating, the coffee, 1.5, Average: 3 Stars.
