Used to be our favorite Mexican restaurant for a quick consistent meal. Not the same place. Last three times we've been here the service has been HORRIBLE. The silverware was dirty - even the napkins. The food is also not as good as it once was but it's clear management is living off the past and they expect their regulars to keep showing up. I won't be taking my family to Super Mex any more. Too many places to eat that want my business.

Tasty, filling, gloppy Mexican food at a very reasonable price? Yes, please! Not the finest Mexican cuisine on the planet, but very good for what it is...cheesy, beany, gooey. Nice patio and the combos here are a good $3-4 less than similar Mexican restaurants.

My family and I have been going to supermex for years. It's definitely the best Mexican food in the Irvine area. I have ordered both take out and dine in. Xiomara and Juan are the best! They both are very good at making sure we have everything we need. I strongly recommend dining in their sections. As for take out, Carlos and Gilly are the most friendly and helpful upfront. Carlos is very good with the menu and very kind. I've recently been ordering for the past few weeks with Gilly and she has consistently been very sweet and accurate with our order (which isn't always the case with the other employees). She is the sweetest cashier that I've had at supermex and she always double checks my order. One of the complaints I have about supermex is that their service is always inconsistent. Some of their employees are great and some of their employees (including the supervisor) come off as rude and not genuine. Another complaint is that with both take out and dine in, the food tends to take a while. Other than that, I hope supermex hires more great employees and keeps up on the great food!

Super Mex puts out an honorable plate of Mexican fare in North Irvine. If nothing else, Super Mex gets a nod to nostalgia. They have been quietly been churning out their salsa, tacos, burritos, fajitas, flautas and combination plates at their location on Culver and Walnut since the late 80's. The service is much warmer than it needs to be and you will likely be called "Amigo"as you sit down. The menu will must likely feel familiar, if not completely cliche, but offers just about anything Mexican you are looking for. From Albondigas to Fajitas, the traditional and not-so-traditional will be found and most is serviceable or better. I will admit that I visit Super Mex very rarely these days, in fact my last visit was the first in over a decade. That said, I felt sentimental sitting down to the table with the large, round tortilla rounds that you have to crush a bit to share and I forgot that they create a truly righteous salsa. Without looking at a menu I ordered the standby from high school - The Carne Asada Super Mex Burrito; served wet. The Carne Asada Super Mex Burrito is nothing if not gargantuan. An Enchilada sauce slathered Burrito containing diced marinated Steak, Beans, Cilantro, Onions and Lettuce is presented before your eyes hot and bubbling. The sauce is mildly spicy without overpowering the Burrito and has a great, bold umami flavor to it thanks to an addition I just couldn't pinpoint. The Burrito was plenty tasty but I must admit that the Tortilla was a bit too thick for my liking and the Steak was somewhat overcooked and gummy. Another criticism is the cost - $12.00+ if you order it wet - and you should. Complaints aside, it was great to reel back the clock for 45 minutes and relive an Irvine Classic. My heart says 4 stars, the palette says 3... and 3 stars is the experience you will most likely find if you are not from the area.

I normally go to the one one in Huntington Beach, and have no complaints there. However, this super mex's food was terrible!! I ordered a combo plate with a crispy chicken taco, cheese enchilada, as well as beans and rice. The beans and rice were flavorless, salty, and greasy!! The enchilada was dry and the sauce was bland! The worst of the worst was the Chicken taco!!! The taco shell was burnt, only dark meat, and the greasiest thing I have ever eaten!!! I am not too picky of a person, but this food was disgusting!!

We came for lunch and were pleased! Good food (mmmmm nachos) and churros :) strong margaritas and I like that they bring the Cadillac shot with the margarita so you can pour it yourself. We shall return!

Though I love (the very different) Taco Surf and (the very similar) El Burrito Jr, Super Mex is my favorite chain of cheap, casual Mexican restaurants. Love the tacos, burritos, chips and salsa and the Diet Coke refills. Of the four locations I frequent, Irvine is the nicest, and has frozen margaritas by the pitcher.

I've come here before and liked it. It's isn't great food but decent. Today I came and ordered the steak nachos. What a soggy mess. The steak was dry and over cooked. Not good. Plus my waiter has not come back once to check on me. I'm sitting here waiting for my check. Kind of wondering how long he'll leave me here without checking on me. It isn't busy. . It seems the staff all just like talking to each other. What a joke.

Love Super Mex! Their bean, rice and cheese burritos are so good, and their salsa and guacamole are delicious, too. A big thumbs up to Letty, a supervisor there. She is so friendly and helpful! FYI: The hours listed on Yelp are wrong. This restaurant is also open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

I really love coming here. Every time I crave Mexican Food, this is one of my favorite go-to places. I love their chips and salsa. Also a big fan of their crispy beef tacos. I have not tried many things (mostly creature of habit) but everything that I have tried has been very good. If you're looking for a decent Mexican restaurant, Super Mex is definitely a great place to go.

4 stars for finding a good Mexican food restaurant in Irvine. This definitely is not the best Mexican food I've ever had... But trying to find authentic Mexican in irvine is probably impossible. I'm all about authentic Mexican food, like not-so-pretty restaurants made with love from my Tia (I'm not Latina, but I'm from an area with a large percentage so I love good stuff!) The chips are large circular corn tortillas and the salsa was really yummy! I got 3 carnitas tacos + rice and beans for only $7.50! To me, it's worth it. Again... Were in irvine, so I'm used to paying for overpriced food here. My food was very satisfying! The workers were very sweet, so I have no complaints. I would definitely come back!

This place sucks. I think I knew this from the last time I ate here probably 10+ years, but on a hungover day not wanting to leave the house this was one of the only options that delivers for Mexican food. I wish I could say one thing was bad, but others were good, or okay - however we ordered like a MILLION things and not one had at least one redeeming quality. Tacos, burrito, enchiladas, hard tacos. My chile relleno burrito that I was so looking forward to was a mess of egg, I mean seriously an omelette and a tiny sliver of chile. Enchilada sauce was bland and flavorless, everything was bland and flavorless. The meat was dry, all of it was just awful. It's a real wonder how this place has stayed open for so long with absolutely sub quality food.

  • Nick S.

First time eating here, got the super Mex burrito W/ shredded chicken and rice and beans added for $2.00 extra. It was pretty good! Definitely best in the irvine area. It's pretty inexpensive as well. Will definitely be back again. 4 Stars.

Great nachos and great chile rellenos. Need I say more? In Irvine, there are limited solid Mexican food restaurants so the ones that are here do have to stand out. It's been years since I last went to one do to the fact I don't live in the area anymore but it did not disappoint on my last visit. Mind you this is for take out only. I don't know what else to say other then this place hit the spot and satisfied my craving for some food south of the border.

I don't know what everyone is talking about, but we had the best service from Nicole! The food is everything you would expect from a place that looks like this on the inside. It's not 100% authentic, but I would give it a solid 85% I had the carne asada taco, chicken tamale, and cheese enchilada. Way more then I can bare to eat but delicious none the less. The kiddo had the children's chicken enchilada The boyfriend had machaca! That by far was my favorite! Sooo many flavors, full of deliciousness with homemade flour tortillas. They give you chips and salsa while you wait, the salsa was pretty darn good. I was worried because of the coloring of it lol but it's solid try it! We will be back!

I normally go to their Fullerton location which I absolutely love, but I moved to Tustin and since this location was closer, decided to try it out. I think overall it was a bad experience because I was comparing to the Fullerton location. First of all we had to "seat ourselves" and majority of the tables were wobbly. We played musical tables and finally just decided on a table. Second, their salsa was nowhere close to the salsa at Fullerton. I mean aren't you guys the same restaurant? Do you not share your recipes??? I was extremely disappointed in their salsa. It was so bland and watered down, I could not believe it. Third, my usual order the lite chicken enchilada was close but still not the same :( the rice was really overcooked, the chicken inside the chicken enchilada was also different, it tasted more slimy, and the beans needed more flavor. Overall, I love Super Mex but after this very disappointing experience, I would only go to Fullerton location.

  • Vanessa A.

We normally love this Super Mex. I was craving a big bowl of their albondigas soup, so we headed there for an early dinner. There was hardly anyone else in the place, since it was 4:15 when we arrived for dinner, but our food took 20 minutes to arrive! It was still delicious, though.

Wow, been really disappointed the last few times we've gone here and are considering not going here anymore. We typically go here almost every weekend for dinner. The location is super convenient. We often pop into the pet store next door or to Ralph's afterwards to pick up groceries for the week. We typically go here on Sunday evenings. Several times recently they have been out of most of their beers which is extremely annoying. We've had to settle with beers we don't particularly like. I don't know how they can continually run out of beer. If this constantly happens, they should be buying more so they don't run out. Their taps also weren't working on a recent visit so we had to have bottled instead. Service lately has really been lacking. It's been taking forever for someone to bring over menus and take orders. Having to wait 5-10 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge you is unacceptable. Food service has been slow too. On a recent visit it took over an hour to get our food. That's ridiculous! We still like the food here but the service has really gone downhill.

RUDE! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I took my boyfriend and my 3 year old daughter to dinner here on 12/20/14. It was 8:45pm and we were rudely greeted by an employee named AMIER. I asked him if they were still open and what time were they'll closing? AMIER replied "WELL IF YOU GO SIT DOWN WE HAVE TO FEED YOU RIGHT, YOU GOT 15 MINUTES BECAUSE WE CLOSE AT 9" I asked for his name and I asked a nearby employee to get the manager. At this point AMIER continued to whisper and talk about me to a Co-worker. He stated "I DON'T EVEN CARE I'M OFF THE CLOCK ANYWAY" FRANK the manager arrived and I explained the entire situation to him. Frank apologized and said he would talk with AMIER. I'm not sure if any consequences will happen for treating customers this way, we left without eating and will never go back.

If you like Mexican food with "zero" spicey-ness, this is your place. I mean it is really bland for Mexican Food! I will not be back.

The food is meh. The service is poor. I can go elsewhere for Mexican-American food for far better quality in food and service. 1) Severely under staffed for a full house. Took about 10 minutes to put in our drink order; 20-25 minutes to place food order. 2) Staff was friendly, but not knowledgeable about the menu. He could not answer a question regarding what the difference is between carnitas, al pastor, and chile verde. 3) Food would be better if I cooked at home. I ordered the fajitas bowl; comes with green rice, fajita veggies, and strips of chicken. The chicken was the worse -- extremely dry and tough (takes force to put a fork in it). Perhaps they re-cooked leftovers, or they left it on the grill for far too long. Green rice was OK. Fajita veggies were luke warm and very oily. Beans are optional; I ordered it, they forgot it. 4) I'm not a fan of their chips (fried whole corn tortillas -- the ones used for street tacos). Some people enjoy it, but I find it bothersome to have to break apart large tortilla chips into smaller, manageable sizes. No plates were provided, so once you grab a chip and man handle it to break it apart, you'll have to hold on to it until you eat it... or if you want to put it back into the communal basket. This also makes your hands very greasy. I've been to Super Mex twice. Both experiences were meh. I'm not coming back for a 3rd visit.

Talk about customer service! They completely re-engineered their mixed fajitas plate for me, replaced rice with a salad and made sure that my food had no garlic. Super attentive service, however it did take a while for the food to come out, but so did everyone else's and they weren't very crowded, so I guess they were just making it to order, which is great! The portions are pretty big, my friend and I shared the mixed fajitas and didn't even finish.

I've been to this place several times. The food has never matched the quality of either the Huntington Beach or Belmont Shores Supermex, but hey this one's closer to the office and one can hope that they would improve. Hopes dashed tonight. Was told that a to-go order would take 15 minutes and it ended up taking longer than 35 minutes while I waited. Wasn't that busy for a Friday night so it's evident they forgot to place the order. When I mentioned that the order took longer than twice what they had said, they offered extra chips and salsa. Pffffft. Bland salsa and stale chips to go with my 35 minute wait? No, thanks. I don't recommend unless lousy front service is your thing. Will absolutely spread the word about this place to my colleagues.

We've been coming here for years and we love this place because of the good food and great service. We'll usually get the beef taco plates (#7), nachos, or carnitas Super Mex (which is what I had tonight), yum! Placing a take out order is usually a boring, straight forward, easy task. What made this take out order so unusual was the fellow taking my order. His name is Carlos. I walked in and was welcomed with a big smile. I walked up to the counter, the phone rang and he picked it up. As soon as he was done, he thanked me for waiting (no one ever does that). As soon as I completed my order, he told me that it would take about 10 minutes (no big deal since I was planning to run next door for something anyway). What he said next blew me away.... He asked if he could offer me a cup of water while I waited for my order. What??? Who does that?? I have never been asked that, even at higher end establishments! How can such a simple question blow me away? Not only do they have good food; they have awesome service! When my order was ready, he called my name, thanked me, offered another big smile and said that he looked forward to seeing me again next time. Customer service is a crucial part of any business, regardless of the title or position one holds. I hope they realize how fortunate they are to have Carlos as their front line representative. A great customer experience is important no matter where you are in the restaurant - more so because of the high visibility area he is managing. I am certain that Carlos will have people coming back! It is solely because of that one question that even compelled me to write this. Keep up the great work, Carlos! I know you will go far! = )

We have always had great experiences at Super Amex. Their prices are very reasonable, and the portions are large. Crispy taco shells are done just right, browned just a little with crispy edges. Chile Rellano is very good, with the right amount of cheese. Their light menu has some great items such as a chicken burrito and chicken quesadilla in whole wheat tortillas. They come with a yummy cilantro rice which you can also get on combos from the regular menu. Their chips are actually whole fried tortillas which you break apart yourself. They are always fresh - always! Service has always been quick and attentive, with refills on drinks without even having to ask. We look forward to many more visits to Super Mex!

Super Mex has a new menu. When did that happen? Food is still great, unless you're eating their healthier stuff and then it's downgraded to "ok". But what can I expect if they take out the fatty flavor and throw in veggies?? The hubby devoured the gigantic burrito without taking a sip of his coke, I went through about 2 baskets of their chips (yum) - the guac was delish, before getting my chix salad. I was so full of the chips that I ate the top off the salad and left most of the lettuce. Bad trade off, I know. Nothing to complain about during our noshfest. Service was great too. Dinner for 6 without breaking the bank. Gotta love it. OH, one thing, if you sit in the patio and they turn on the heater, make sure it's on a low setting unless it's snowing out. Those suckers fried the back of the hubby's head and practically melted my sis in law's sweater.

I would highly recommend the shredded beef tacos and the old school fried tacos! The SuperMex Margarita is great, comes with a shot of Grand Marnier. Chips and salsa are good (tortillas are fried whole, so you break them yourself). I had great service here.. very friendly server and the order came out of the kitchen fast!

Come here all the time!!! The food is always great!!! For some strange reason they always seem to struggle with their service at night!!! Came in tonight (sunday) restaurant was 3/4 full had a handful of servers working and it was complete chaos!!! The servers were literally running around the restaurant. Just an idea from a customer.... 1) hire more staff 2) put the restaurant on a wait!!! Trust me your restaurant will be more efficient this way!!! You lost a lot business tonight

Im really disappointed. I was not only starving I was trying to be patient with the cooking. I could have eaten a horse. I've eaten here before- the food is alright. I mean I've tasted better in LA, but needless to say today was a very challenging experience. I ordered the mini chimis and an a la carte chile relleno. Does it really take almost 30 mins to cook that? I didn't even order a combo plate. I know the waiter was trying and I give him credit for that, but just under 30 min really? By the time I finally for my food I wasn't even interested in eating anymore. So I packed up my chimis, paid my bill and went on my way. Yes, I did eat the relleno. But honestly, I was about 2 seconds from walking out. And I don't do those kinds of things.

We have eaten at Super Mex for many years but the service got so bad we stopped going there. The servers were always nice but the service became unacceptably slow, they didn't refill drinks without asking, etc. The food was still good so we went to 'take out' only. We recently stopped that since they repeatedly messed up our orders. Very disappointing since they make great food but they seem to be their own worst enemy. I'll try back again in a year or so, if they're still in business, and hopefully things will be better.

We've been coming here for years... And it seems that service is getting worse. The food hasn't really changed... Mexican food is kinda meh... But I'm comparing to real authentic hole-in the wall places in East LA. This is Irvine :) as I'm sitting here... It's been 30 minutes since we ordered... I already finished my boom ah. Oh... Food just came... Yay.

I know that Super Mex is not a fancy place to begin with. However, my rating is not based so much on their food (which did not meet my burrito standards, which aren't that high to begin with). We had ordered an enchilada and buritto. My carne asada burrito came without guacamole, even though the menu stated that it would have guacamole. I had to order guacamole on the side. This was not the bad part. The bad part was, after we were seated, it took the waiter about 20 minutes to come by and ask if we wanted something to drink. After we were served an iced water & iced tea, it took another 25 minutes for us to get our food. The burrito wasn't that good. The carne asada was overcooked, and rather dry. It came without the guacamole. The beef enchilada was okay; nothing to really gloat about here. After we ate, it took another 20 minutes for us to receive our check. Overall, I must say, the service was simply, horrible. I highly doubt we will be going here again, for fast Mexican food. I hate to say this, but Del Taco or Taco Bell would have been 10x better than this.

Great quality food. I can say this is real Mexican food! Alejandro is the best server, he is fast & wont forget a request even though you ask for 5+ sides. Great part is, they dont charge extra for little sides like sour cream & salsa like most other places do.

This is a terrible restaurant. I asked for lemon in my water and got a brown lemon. When I ordered my steak tostada it was pressed beef. I might as well have thrown my money in the streets. I will never return there again and will tell all of my friends to avoid this place. Even the service was below par.

We went as a family to find a Taco Tuesday that wasn't just a hole in the wall serving $1.00 tacos. We decided on a sit down Mexican restaurant. Super Mex was suggested by a friend, so we decided to give it a try. After reading the reviews, we were hesitant but decided to try anyway. The atmosphere was good, the service was good, the food was good, portion size was good. The 4 star rating says it right; Yay! I'm a fan We will be back to try other items on the menu. I'm sure we wont be dissapointed.

I've been here a few times. Food is consistently good. Went with the family Saturday night and had a great time. Not the best Mexican food in OC but a good unpretentious place to take little ones or for a low key business lunch. Had the Steak Chimichanga platter and it was really tasty.

I love me some good Mexican food. And THIS is good Mexican food. I get the shredded beef crispy tacos with beans and rice every time. It's always good. Some of the best shredded beef tacos I've ever had. Same goes for the chips and salsa - I love the salsa so much I wish they bottled it for retail sale. Some other reviewers complained about the price. These folks need to take a good long look in the mirror and really figure out why $8 to $9 a plate at a sit-down restaurant is too rich for their blood. This isn't McDonald's quality food so don't expect a 99 cent menu. My girlfriend and I eat full meals at Super Mex all the time for around $19 total (before tip). To get the same food at Chipotle you'll be paying the same price, except you'll have to stand in line, bus your own plate, and scream over the hipster music echoing off the brushed aluminum. Even the booze is cheap. Good margaritas, too. The laid back atmosphere is comforting and the patio is the perfect place to unwind after a long day of work. I've had a couple experiences where the service was a bit slow, but not bad enough to make a stink about it. And that's rare anyway. The service is almost always exactly what you want - attentive and quick without being overbearing. Support this local business and eat good Mexican food. Try it once and you'll want to come back.

Chips chips chips. They give free fresh chip with salsa. They're amazing. It took them a while to serve us though. That was the only con. Other than that the food was great. Portions are large. I got myself the chicken burrito and added beans and rice on the side. It came pretty quickly and filled me up. Place is affordable. You should expect to pay around 8 dollars per person. Overall, the experience was good. Really recommend this place if you want to get your Mexican fix in.

Very surprised this place only has 3 stars. Been here a handful of times whenever im craving Mexican food and I've never left unsatisfied by either the food or service. -Cant go wrong with the bottomless complimentary chips and salsa -Fair priced alcohols. I always get a boomba (largest beer mug they have) I believe its around 6-7$ if I recall correctly. All in all, a nice little sitdown restaurant with good service and decently priced food. Will be returning shortly!

I did not even get to try the food, because the margarita was so bad, I paid for it and ran. It taste like a sour lemonade with extra sweet sugar. So bad, I could not give the food a try.

Pretty good Mexican food, for Irvine. We were a group of eight and had lunch on a weekday. The wait was a little long but that's understandable for our group size. The service was quick and polite. The food came quickly and was really good. Prices were reasonable. This restaurant doesn't stand out but is A-OK if you want Mexican.

Service is wonderful here. Everyone is very friendly and hospitable. The restroom was clean, and decorations were lively. I wasn't aware that this place was a chain restaurant until reading over the reviews now which explains a lot to me. The fanciful decor was nice to look at but I found the food to be average. I got a wet "super mex" chicken burrito with red sauce. My boyfriend got the beef burrito with green sauce which was supposed to be spicy. I couldn't tell much of a difference comparing the red and green sauces. Both meats flavor were average. I was also surprised to find out that they didn't have pickled carrots/jalapeños. Maybe it's due to the fact that I live near Santa Ana and can get a delicious wet burrito for less money that makes me unimpressed with the food here. I'd suggest coming here more to enjoy the atmosphere and if you're not picky with your Mexican food. I'd say this restaurant is perfect for a family dinner.

I bought a Groupon for $20 worth of food for $10. Great deal! I ordered wings, a carne asada burrito, and chicken bowl for take-out. When I arrived, there was a mild confusion about the discount applied because I ordered online and apparently there is a discount for first-time online orders. The cashier asked me if I wanted to save my Groupon for next time since I wouldn't be able to use the online discount again. I declined it since using my Groupon would've been a far better "deal". Anyway, got home and opened to find lots of whole tostada shells w/ salsa (I guess that is their chips and salsa?). I liked these LOT. Very nice and warm and crispy! The chicken bowl was basically a lot of rice and a LOT of shredded chicken. Flavors were there, but the presentation left a lot to be desired. I had to jazz it up w/ my own bag of frozen mixed veggies from home. The wings were surprisingly delicious! Nice heat, nice tang, and still semi-crisp. The burrito was also pretty good. I kept it simple w/ just carne asada, pinto beans, rice, and hot sauce. Very good reheated, as well. All in all, I would say that I really liked the food here and would definitely try it again! It may not be "authentic" but it's a notch above Chipotle and just cuz it's Gringo-style Mexican food, doesn't mean it's not delicious.

So the last three times we ordered from here, it was for takeout food. The last three times, the order we received was incorrect. For example, one time they completely forgot an item and the next time it was incorrect. My most recent order, two days ago, I learned my lesson and went over the food at the restaurant; alas, it was incorrect again!! This restaurant is in dire need of new management. More specifically, they need a competent person to take the phone orders, run the cash register, and pack the to go orders. The food is actually not half bad, but the management and service is just terrible.

I haven't been to Super Mex since my high school days, so when a buddy from work mentioned we go there for lunch, i decided it was time to return to the old stomping grounds. From what i remembered, i really liked Super Mex and they have been in business forever, so i knew i'd be happy. Chips and Salsa- I have never liked the chips here. They are one large circle and you need to break them up yourself. Not my preference. The salsa is fresh and good though. Chicken Bowl- Tender chicken, Mexican rice, pinto beans. I thought the bowl was good, not great. I would probably get something else next time. With all of the amazing Mexican food restaurants out there now, i think Super Mex is pretty average these days. There is nothing wrong with the food as it is good, but you can find better. ***** (5 Stars)- Amazing, zero flaws, a must go! (Not given often) **** (4 Stars)- Memorable, strongly feel you should visit *** (3 Stars)- Above average, worth a visit ** (2 Stars)- Average, some pro's and some con's * (1 Star)- Opinion is do not go, below average

Good food that comes out quickly. Just slow to pick up your payment which is a problem on your lunch hour.

i've never eaten so much Mexican food (counting other Mexican restaurants too) in my ENTIRE life ever since I've started working here a year ago in Irvine - all thanks to my coworker (who's not Mexican & eats Mexican food at least 3x a week for lunch!) I've only been coming here for lunch so I can only speak to that. It's not a fancy spot like Javiers but it's a convenient & a comfy spot to dine at. The food here is consistent with decent size portions. The table service has gotten way better than it was before (when I first started coming). Water/soda, chips, salsa, & any other requests we had were attended to in very timely manner. :: FOOD :: Enchilada (chicken or ground beef) & Tamale (beef) Combo (4/5) - Comes with beans & rice. Nothing to complain here except that it is a lil heavy dish. I like it especially with extra salsa on the side :D Small Abondiga Soup (4/5) - I love soup & this was simple & broth was tasty. Soup comes with 2 meatballs, carrots & potatoes. Shredded Beef Taquitos - a la carte (4/5) - Gawd I know it's so bad to have fried food but once in awhile i can't help but order the taquitos. Nicely fried and topped w/ avocado. I always request for salsa on the side to dip it in cuz it makes it more yummy. Chicken Tamale - a la carte (3.75/5) - topped with green sauce & melted shredded cheese. A little more corn than chicken but you can still tastes that there are chicken within. Fajita Steak Salad (3.75/5) - Good size salad portion with mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, fried tortilla strips, plenty of fajitas & steak strips (which can be a bit dry). Dressing isn't the healthiest, a little heavy but goes well with the salad. :: NOTES :: 1) Clean establishment & restrooms 2) Lots of menu options especially on the combos 3) Several flat screen tvs to watch the games or whatever is on or at your request 4) There is a "LITE" menu for those how are carb/calorie conscious

Don't bother doing an online order. I did the online order. Called at 6:37 to confirm the order went through. And sitting here almost 30 minutes later because they didn't start out order until we got here to pick it up. Wth? What's the point of having online ordering??

When I was at uci this was our goto mexican place! It's so cute and cheap! Not to mention the service is excellent and it's never super crowded or noisy. And the food is SO GOOD. Best salsa ever! I usually get the bean and cheese burrito or nachos. During happy hour you get a huge plate of those amazing nachos for super cheap. For less than 9 bucks you can get a great yummy meal! I don't know why it only has 3 stars. It was my fav place and I still miss it every week! Great salsa. Nice ambiance. Delicious nachos. Super cheap prices.

I cannot count how many times I've eaten here. I'm just now writing a review because I finally have the time. Oh SuperMex where do I begin ? It's our go to Mexican food destination :) First of all they greet you and get your house chips and salsa pretty quickly. The salsa is good (not great because I like chunky salsa, not blended salsa). The chips are always either wonderfully light and crispy with great flavor or hard and stale. There's no in between with the chips. Their burritos are amazing! It's a must to order their burritos wet with red enchilada sauce. Oh their enchilada sauce is hands down my favorite enchilada sauce around! It's got the right balance of saltiness and tangy-ness. It's not spicy but full of flavor. So back to the burritos- they're of epic proportions! It's rare that I see anyone finish a burrito in one sitting because they each weigh like 5 lbs! Their tacos and enchiladas are also wonderful. Their rice also deserves an honorable mention because it light and fluffy. It's got a great flavor to it and it's got just the right amount of salt. I love eating it with fresh pico de gallo. Their menu is awesome too because they have every combination you can think of! You also have the option to order from the "lite " section or the a la carte section. I've yet to visit here during happy hour. Oh and their mini chimichangas from the appetizer section are drool worthy! The staff is always on top of it and from my experience they're always happy to be there. If you go in with a groupon make you sure mention it before you get the bill. They freak out if you mention after- not sure why. Their bathrooms have an awful sewer smell to them. It's the most unpleasant part of the while restaurant. In fact when I dine here I try not to drink so much in order to avoid the restrooms ! This is why they get 3 stars and not 4 :(

The food is delicious! Hard to choose from combinations, but I had #23, which includes a chicken taco, chicken enchilada and the best chili rellano! Hubby always gets a chunks of beef burrito. The salsa is fresh and that makes the meal! :)

My husband and I have come here for years. The service and food has been getting worse, so much so that we don't really consider dining here amymore. We've done take out and dined in and the service is terrible. We can't figure out why the cooks keep burning a bean and cheese burrito. The food is very inconsistent with everything we order.

I have a lot of great things to say about this restaurant, I actually invited my co workers to this place myself as a recommendation from an old friend & we were pleased with the service not to mention the great food, supermex burrito being my favorite !!! Special thanks to server Carlos & very attentive manager frank making sure everything was on point, see you Soon SuperMex !!!!!!! Keep it up!

They have cheap pitchers and really big burritos which is why we came here on a Thursday night.. but the beer seemed watered down, the place was empty, and they started to clean up at 8 even though they close at 9. The food was pretty good though, large portions... but I guess you wouldn't want to come here for something festive.

Worst carne asada burrito ever. I had to drown it in salsa just to give it flavor. Hey Super Mex, try some seasoning. This is my second time at this location. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Place is my new spot for great food and excellent service. For Christmas ordered some delicious Carnitas, rice and beans from Frank the manager. Everything was spot on and all my family are also now new customers! I have been back now with my brother Brian for a couple bottles of beer, food and a margarita. Delicsious too! See you soon and thanks again Frank!

Love their refried beans! Yes, this will be short and full of lard. Homemade refried beans, made the proper way (with lard) and the taste is divine. I practically went out of my way, although I was in the area, to pick up a decent size burrito and a side of beans. Burrito is $4.40 and yes that is a very reasonable price, however I asked to add onions. They added grilled onions (I like them raw) and then they charged me $1 for the onions. I call b.s. on this and you've been deducted 1 star because of the $1 charge, which I was not told about. My side of beans was $2.25 (saved for another day) was good sized and I was very pleased taste-wise two days later. Some of their chips & salsa were thrown in as a bonus, however while the salsa is very good and has some heat, the chips are whole freshly fried corn tortillas and not that great. I cannot comment on any other offerings. I'm sure I'll return and will try some other food. So if you are on the hunt for really great refried beans, this is your spot.

Started going to Sunset Beach location in 80's and been going to all locations south of there ever since. They start it off right with great salsa and chips. Everything from the combo plates, burritos and crispy tacos are excellent.

I have been to other Super Mex restaurants and the food and service was acceptable. This branch was the polar opposite. The waiter started off with an attitude when asked if they had Splenda Sweeney, just saying "no" and walking away. The food came out missing several ingredients and when I asked the waiter about it, I was met with an eye roll and a huff. The food itself was cold and bland. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you enjoy hospital food.

I am so sad to write such a poor review. Over the years, this place has gone down hill and fast! The last three times we have eaten here the server took over 15 mins to bring drinks(the restaurant maybe had 3 tables including us). He always takes my order down wrong and I have allergies! Usually, we do not have a problem with the food but this time my fajita meat was all over cooked(mix meat) and had ingredients I specially asked to take off due to allergies. One of us always orders Huevos Rancheros and never had an issue until now... There are two eggs.. One cooked and one not.. How? And the sauce so was flavorless that we just didn't eat it.The best part would be their chips and salsa... Very tasty. Sad to say.. But we will never go back. Time to find another Mexican favorite.

We were in the mood for Mexican food on Mother's Day and the wait everywhere was crazy! Super Mex had no wait and only a handful of people were in the place. It is a seat yourself place and the guy busing tables saw that my mom is in a wheelchair and he was quick to offer some assistance. He even took our drink orders right away...thank goodness because it was so hot outside! I had the #11 carnitas with pico, guac, rice and beans and it was bland at best. The pork had no flavor and required lots of salsa to spice it up. When I have Mexican food, I expect big bold flavors and my dish was seriously lacking that. My mom had the chili relleno with rice and beans and her husband had the chicken tamale/chicken taco combo and they both really liked their food. I tried the tamales and thought that it was pretty good..... but then again, no tamale is better than what you buy from a street cart for $1. The chips & salsa were OK, we would have liked a refill but it never came. Service was slow and it took us a while before we got refills from our server. A few other staff members walked by and we sat with empty glasses but I don't know if any of them noticed this or not. I'm open to trying this place again.... but I'll order something else for sure.

I'm fairly disappointed to say the least. I should have listened to the previous yelp reviews and chose another restaurant, but I'm stubborn. I used to go to the Super Mex in Fullerton years ago and I remember enjoying it. It's a "seat yourself" establishment which is fine, but I expect to be greeted with menus and chips and salsa immediately. It took about 8 minutes for someone to notice that we were just sitting there. Menus were dropped off, but the server didn't even bother to greet us or ask us if we wanted a drink. I had to ask the bus boy who brought our chips if we could order drinks with him. I ordered the cheese enchilada and beef tamale combo plate, the red enchilada sauce had a very strong tomato flavor which I wasn't fond of, neither was my husband (he ordered the chicken enchilada plate). I did enjoy the chips and salsa, I wish the salsa had more kick, but it was still good nonetheless. I was really hoping to find a good Mexican place nearby but I was let down. I will not be returning.

The chips and salsa really set this place a step above the rest. Super Mex serves fresh, whole-fried tortilla chips with a fantastic complement of salsa. The chips come as giant disks you have to break apart to eat - like a priest presiding over communion. If the prospect of a spicy Host doesn't excite you, the Super Mex burrito should. It is reasonably priced at $9 and guaranteed to fill you up. I prefer it with shredded beef, though the shredded chicken is also good. It can also be ordered with ground beef, chunked beef, carnitas, green chili pork, fish, steak, or no meat...if that's your thing. How good is the food? This place neighbors several other interesting looking restaurants. I've wanted to try them all for some time, but haven't yet. Whenever I'm nearby and wondering what to eat, Super Mex seems like the answer. I believe it offers the best value in that shopping center. How can I be so certain without trying the other places? Well, that's faith. Date Tip: If it's a nice day, get Super Mex to-go, hop a couple exits south on the 5, and enjoy your food as a picnic at Great Park. Pro Tip: You can call in your to-go orders ahead of time.

Food was amazing. They even accommodated my Vegan needs. Wait staff are super nice especially Xiomara (I think thats how it is spelled) she was very pleasant. I had stopped to go to the vegan place next door but they are closed Mondays. Was very happy that in the end I went here.

We just got back from our first visit at Super Mex. We were hesitant after reading all of the reviews on Yelp, but decided to give it a try anyways. We were seated quickly, had salsa, chips and waters on the table almost immediately. Our server was over shortly and our food came out very quick! The only complaint is that it took awhile for our bill to be brought to us, but other than that I can't complain about the service. Food: For the price- the food is good! I got the chicken & shredded beef tacos which were packed with juicy meat and the taco shell was grilled slightly. Delicious! My boyfriend got the chile relleno which we really enjoyed! It wasn't battered heavy but had a thicker layer of egg which allowed for the natural flavor of the pepper to come out. We we definitely try this place again, but for happy hour!

It was off to a great start! I went here wit a groupon ($10 for $20) , walked in place was pretty empty and it was a seat yourself setting so we chose a nice table. They brought over chips and salsa immediately and they tasted great, salsa was great and chips were fresh! Then they didn't check up on us for a while and then finally came and took our order, I ordered the "special" which is a plate of food with a drink for 8.99, we ordered enough food to make it over the 20 dollar minimum for using a groupon, we told the server we had a groupon as well before ordering and he said that's fine food took FOREVER to come and when it did it wasn't that great either, very bland for Mexican food, I was disappointed but whatever, at least I got a good deal for it. well.. maybe not.. upon paying I presented my groupon to the guy who gave us our check (different guy who took our order, different guy who brought the food, and different guy who brought the check) and he then quickly and rudely told me that you can't use the groupon on specials.. I said I asked the guy before I ordered and he said it was fine, but the guy who brought out check wasn't even sympathetic, "well he's wrong." um.. ok... well that's a bit unfair to me isn't it?! I stood my ground but he insisted that I couldn't use my groupon, in the end he charged my full price for my food (so basically instead of a special deal he pieced the items together which costs more) and the bill ended up to be around 25 instead of 21ish... so now I could use my groupon.. yep not happy at all, never going back, crappy food. crappy service, eh now that I look back at my review it was pretty crapp-ily written as well but you get my point

This isn't my favorite location but it still offers the same great food, atmosphere and service. My girlfriend and I eat here on a pretty regular basis. We absolutely love their chips and salsa and chicken tacos. If your in the mood for some tasty food and casual ambiance, Super Mex is a solid choice. Now, if they would just open a location in south Orange County we would be set!

Their food is great. I recommend also trying their Micheladas, if you like those. Their mix is spicy and delicious! I would give 5 stars, but out of the three times I've eaten there, I had one server that was not as attentive as others. However, may just be a one off, and their food is well worth it!

Service just keeps getting worse; restaurant smells I have been a Super Mex customer for more than 20 years. At all of the other locations that I have been to, it is set up more like a quick take-out Mexican restaurant where you order at the counter and food is delivered to the table. I definitely think that sort of service would work better at this location. My biggest issue with this location is the smell. There is definitely something foul going on with the plumbing and there are times when I open the front door and then leave because I cannot stomach sitting in that stench. I don't know how the staff does it! The smell seems to be coming from the back of the restaurant, perhaps the toilets, and every time someone opens the door it smells like a septic tank has backed up. It seems that the management is aware of it, but they just try to mask the odor by using all kinds of air fresheners that just make it worse. TRULY, eye-wateringly bad. Some days, the smell isn't so bad and I have to hope that the plumbing is working and so we dine in... which isn't always great, either. Although the staff is fairly consistent and I recognize many of them from visiting this same location for the past 6+ years, none of them seems to be particularly happy. The smiles and greetings from the Take Out counter are the last that you're likely to see. There always seems to be a large number of servers working at the same time but there does not seem to be a suitable hierarchy. So one server will bring you a menu and ask your drink order but someone else will deliver it and yet another person will bring you chips and often a fourth person will actually take your order. The food is delivered by who ever is standing closest to the kitchen and they generally just want to drop off the plates. For the 2nd visit in a row my order wasn't quite right - my husband orders his food without sour cream and both of our dishes were served without it. Not really a big deal, so I just kindly asked the server to bring me a side of it, since I *did* want the sour cream. Both times, I got a huge exasperated sigh and on my last visit the person told me that he'd ask our waitress to bring it for us and she never did. In fact, we could not find a single server in the restaurant to even ask for help in locating her. Needless to say, we never saw the waitress again - actually, wait. She showed up and asked if we wanted dessert and when we declined she literally dropped the check from a foot off the table and walked away, never to come back. The only server who seemed to be working was a man named Carlos and he noticed us waiting on refills, etc. and came and took care of it (including getting the sour cream). He is the only person in recent memory that asked if we wanted refills or more chips/salsa. He also saw us sitting there a solid 10 minutes after the waitress had dropped the check and he came and took care of it. We made sure to tip him specifically since none of the other servers actually served us. I hope that he wasn't forced to split his tips because as far as I could see, he and the kitchen staff were the only ones working. What keeps us going back is the food. Although it's neither authentic or gourmet, they have some dishes that are "just right". Their salsa is fantastic and freshly made - it also is sold To Go at excellent prices. I always take home a big container of salsa plus their housemade chips.

It's weird how mixed the reviews are about this restaurant. I've been here 3 times and all times were pretty consistent. Service has always been friendly and prompt. I need to mention that Super Mex is not known for "healthy food" so if you come here expecting some organic Baja Fresh non-fried B.S. then you may as well go somewhere else. Yes, the food is a little greasy... but it's damn delicious IMO. I LOVE the complimentary in-house fried tortillas and salsa that they bring to the table. I always ask for extra salsa to drown my tacos with. I always get the chicken tacos with rice and beans.... love love love. I've tried several burritos which were pretty decent too. The portions are huge and there is quite a variety on the menu to cater to everyone.

Food is ok. Kind of pricy. The bar is way to expensive. They definitely price according to where they Are and not quality of food. Dishes are nothing special. Mexican food much better in other cities, (Santa Ana). There aren't too many Mex places to eat in Irvine so this is it.

Went by for dinner with friends tonight. Took an hour and half (1.5hrs) to get our meal. I asked to speak to the manager, and he/she never came to the table. I think perhaps they don't have one. Food was pretty sad, but stand alone probably 2 or 3 stars for the food. The service and passive aggressive attitude of the staff brings it down to solid 1 star. The server offered Churros for dessert since we had to wait so long. Then when the time came she said she had to check with the manager. Then she came out and asked in 1/2 Churro would be ok. I said no! That she had already offered us Churros - now come back and offer a few pieces? That's what the kids got, a few pieces. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I like Super Mex and I always have. In fact, I don't think I go there enough. I've never eaten inside. I usually get it to go because I know how I like to eat my Mexican food. Unladylike, classless, and void of manners. I don't have time to pinky up my burritos. I go in. Every time I go in to pick up my order, the staff at the counter is pretty friendly. I think the food is pretty good, although I wish the salsa was a wee bit hotter. I'm definitely no stranger to spice. For Irvine, I think this is pretty good Mexican food.

Overpriced Mexican food... But not that bad. It's close enough to me to justify paying a lot for a quick Mexican fix. They fry their own chips here. And rather than cutting them up, they fry the whole tortilla. I'm not sure if I like that better, but they smell really good when they come out. I feel like the serving is a lot smaller since they bring you about 5 tortillas. Which is probably good because whenever a restaurant offers free chips, I usually end up full by the time the food comes out. I got the nachos here and OMG it was such a heaping portion. There was too much topping-ness going on and not very many chips. I didn't really like that the refried beans tasted like they were from a can. But that was really my only gripe about it. I also tried their tamales before, and it's decent. They have TVs all over the place playing whatever sports are on at the moment. Which pretty much means my boyfriend will be pretending to listen to me while watching the game the whole time.

There aren't very many Mexican restaurants in Irvine, but this satisfies our cravings. The complimentary chips and salsa are great. Service is always good. We usually order carne asada, chicken and fish tacos, enchildas, rice and beans. It's not the best Mexican food ever, but it's pretty good. Also, they are quick, convenient and affordable.

I've only gotten takeout from here, so I can't attest to the service. I did get some chips & salsa and a margarita one time while waiting for an order I placed. The chips & salsa were good, the margarita was from a mix. I call it a draw. The food is excellent. I love the Carne Asada Burrito; I order it wet & eat one half for dinner, the next for lunch. My wife loves the chicken enchillada's, our kids love the tamale's. The taquitos are great, even re-heated. They always give us more than enough sides and condiments. I will keep going back.

This is a good place if you're looking for a homestyle Mexican meal. Their salsa is the best I know of. The food, although sometimes a bit greasy, is always tasty and satisfying. Depending on who's working though, you'll either have great service or stupidly slow service. Good for a takeout meal too. Go for it if you want a satisfying and quick Mexican lunch or dinner.

I was really craving Mexican tonight and decided to try this place on a friend's recommendation. The prices are great for a sit down restaurant. I wasn't crazy about the big round tortilla chips though. Salsa was good but the big chips are too thick and hard. I like my chips a little thinner and lighter. I ordered the shredded chicken tostado and it was pretty good. The chicken was moist and it was a decent sized portion not huge but not tiny either. I liked how they loaded up on the lettuce. I tasted my friend's refried beans and they were pretty good. Not my favorite mexican place but i would go back.

Average to slightly above average Mexican food. Came here recently to cash in a Groupon that we purchased a while back. They serve you complimentary tostada chips and salsa which is not great but not bad. Would prefer real chips and a better tasting salsa. For dinner, ordered the combination plate of one cheese enchilada and one carne asada taco. Portions are pretty small which actually reflect on the pricing in the menu. Everything on the menu is pretty affordable but I was not too impressed with the quality of food. It will satisfy, but there are other great Mexican restaurants I would rather spend my money. Gets 4 stars because the server and the manager were really nice and pleasant and asked how everything was at the end of our meal. Simple things like that can go a long way.

Was really disappointed. It was the second time placing a large group order. I told them that the previous time we had one person's food missing and asked them to double check that this time they didn't miss a thing. Guess what? Got back, and someone's food was missing. Looked on the receipt and we paid for it, but didn't have enough time to go back and make a complaint.

I've been to several Super Mex. I've been to all three in the Long Beach area. And I was quite excited that this one was here. It's decent Mexican food. It's hit and miss on the rice. Sometimes dry, sometime really good and flavorful. I really like their chile relleno. Their shrimp fajitas are really good. (These are all for the Long Beach Super Mex. ) I haven't tried these items here at the Irvine location. Now the following are for the Irvine location only. The fish taco - grilled, good. Soooo bland. I asked me husband to remind me that I do not like the fish taco here. Never order it again. No matter how much I love the fish taco, do not order it here. It's supposed to come with guacamole. It was a weird watery guacamole sauce kind of thing. FLAVORLESS. I love the fish tacos at California Fish & Grill (not Mexican food) but excellent fish tacos. Albondigas soup - yes, I know it's soup. It should be soupy, Yes, I got the small. It looked like Alphabet soup with all the letters taken out. The soup itself is still tasty. But they shrunk the vegetables. There used to be a potato chunk in there, This time I got two meatballs and a piece of carrot stick (very small). Seriously. There used to be more stuff in there. Combo plate - two shredded beef enchiladas. They shrunk the plate. Yes, they literally have smaller plates. Still oval, but I swear it's much smaller. They recently did a remodel at the Culver location of the shopping plaza at which this restaurant is located. Perhaps, they upped the rent bec. of the "new, modern" facilities. So now they have to pay more rent, so they decided to shrink the food portion. I dunno. The enchiladas were smaller than they used to be. It looked like a similar amount of rice and beans. But seriously, they're rice and beans. So the enchiladas are smaller and the plate is smaller so you don't realize that they've giving you less food. Uh, no, it's still fairly obvious. Anyhoo, service was okay this night. I notice they're hit and miss on their service. Tonight was okay. Just not as good as it used to be. I'm looking for a new decent Mexican place. Let me know if you've got any recommendations.

I LOVE SUPER MEX! I've been to the one in Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Sunset Beach and now Irvine. I think all of them are fabulous! I've never had something that I didn't like. Their salsa is really good, I love it. I usually get their beef taquitos but I've had their carnitas a few times and they are really good too! This one in Irvine has a full bar which is a plus, some of them don't and I love my margartias. Mmmmm I can't wait to go back. :)

The only good thing was the chips and salsa. The service was okay. But the food was terrible no flavor, no spices, and my guess not fresh. One star!!!

I've been coming here for few years and have tried most of the menu. While a lot of their food is mediocre, their shredded beef tacos are BOMB. Everyone I know loves their salsa and I always get their Jr. Supermex burrito with shredded beef. It's a wet burrito and I always crave it. So if you're going, stick to shredded beef tacos and their Jr supermex burrito.

Super Mex is super mixed up. Several of my coworkers wanted to come here for lunch so I agreed to tag along. I had a carnitas burrito here. It's not bad and not great. I'm not a huge fan of sauce all over my burrito. However, the carnitas was a bit dry. Also, I was there with 5 other coworkers for lunch and they got our orders mixed up and ended up taking an extra 10 minutes before they untangled the mix-up. By the time we all got the right food, my burrito was no longer hot out of the oven. It was lukewarm at best. I can't say that I am anxious to return to this place anytime soon. They seem to be very "cheap" about everything. With the mix-up, they could have just made us a new plate of food rather than taking it back to the kitchen to try and rearrange the food. It really showed their lack of customer service when they seem to refuse to just make a new order and insisted on plopping the wrong burrito with the wrong side and trying to rectify the issue by taking food from one plate and placing it on another. Now, I might do this if I were home but in a restaurant, the more you mess with the food, the uglier it begins to look. In this case, the burrito began to lose its original shape. To me, once you plate something, it's not OK to surgically remove the main entree item and swap it with another plate just because the "sides" were mixed up. Instead, you just make another plate. Also, I am always not a happy customer when I order a soda and the soda tastes funny due to the taste of the water or the ice. They get 3 stars for food but they lose 1/2 star for screwing up our order and they lose another 1/2 star for the bad tasting soda. With so many Mexican restaurants in Southern California, I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon.

I went to Super Mex for lunch in the middle of week. It wasn't particularly busy. Everyone else I was with ordered a burrito or tacos, but I wasn't particularly hungry so I ordered the Albondigas. By the time my soup came out, the others had nearly finished their burritos. The soup wasn't particularly good either. The veggies slices were the size of a golf balls and were very overdone. The meatballs tasted funny. I won't be going back for sure.

The best time to go to this establishment is during late lunch hours. 2-4pm. Beer Deals for the better part of the day $3 bottles: Negro Modelo, Corona, etc. The female server during this time will take longer than expected for service. Get the gentleman who works during this time. He served us when I went with a few friends it was quick and he checked up on us at least 3 times while we were eating. Yes most of the combinations are overpriced for the quality of food. There are two delicious items that are the best deal: 1) The Green Rice Chicken bowl. ($6-7) You can split it with two people if you get beans thrown in the bowl as well. The chicken is always juicy and tender and the rice tastes delicious. Do yourself a favor and mix in the salsa you get with your chips. 2) Steak Quesadilla ($5-6) This quesadilla comes with a healthy stack of steak. For about $14 we split these two dishes among 2 hungry people and 1 not as hungry person. It was a good deal. On a hot day, the Guava and Melon Margaritas are a good choice. They are a little too sweet at first if you get them over the rocks, but once the ice melts they're enjoyable. I just don't prefer Margaritas blended. Smoking is allowed on the patio, a plus or a minus. I'm going to continue my patronage at this establishment, they have yet to disappoint. PS. Tortillas were originally fried in their circular entirety for tortilla chips and broken apart to eat them you idiots.

I've been here twice now, and each time the experience gets worse and worse! I make my order clear and simple, and they can't ever seem to get it right. Their "Chips" are disgusting hard pieces of tortilla , that taste as if they have been left out for DAYS. Their enchilada sauce is quite literally the same sauce you find in spaghetti-o's . The food comes out NEVER hot, or even warm. Forget however about complaining to the waiter or waitress about anything , as they barely speak English and are quite non-existent once you get your food. The only time they show up is when they know your ready to pay. This place is over priced, and the food is HORRIBLE!!!! I wouldn't return to this place, it was the last food establishment on earth..i'd rather starve.

We were looking for a new mexican place and this was a delightful surprise! It was delicious! It was reasonably priced and the menu had so much stuff on it. I got the chicken tamale and beef taco. Both delicious! The way they serve their chips is also really fun, the salsa isn't that bad either. I will definitely come back! This place is great. The inside is really nice too, it was a great experience for us.

Old school Mexican food. Chile verde burritos etc. and it's a good thing, you can keep your Chipotle, Super Mex makes it the way you had Mexican food as a kid. Please stay in business.

We stood at the "please wait to be seated sign" for 5 minutes. The girl behind the to go order counter looked at us several times without saying a word to us. Same with the servers and bar tender. After about 5 minutes I asked the girl behind the counter if some one would be seating us and she nonchalantly replied, "oh go ahead and sit wherever." Really girl behind the counter?? You couldn't have told us that 5 minutes ago or one of the many times you looked at us while standing there not doing anything. After leaving and feeling very disappointed in the service or lack thereof, I thought the manager would like to know. Boy was I wrong about that. The manager, Jose, seemed to care less when I informed him of the less then satisfactory experience. "I'm not sure what's going on, I'll speak with my staff." You're not sure what's going on...that's obvious Jose. Thanks for nothing Super Mex!

  • Jeanette I.

Super Mex reminds me of the touristy Mexican restaurants in Cabo San Lucas that serve the food the gringos want to eat, not the food that is actually a good representation of the country. It's all SO greasy with gargantuan portions that encourage you to throw back thousands of calories in a single sitting. And everything is so smothered in sauce and cheese that you can't even appreciate the food you actually ordered beneath it. At best, have some chips and a drink here while you decide where you should for dinner. (I admit, they have a decent selection of beer on tap and their margaritas are palatable).

If you are looking for basic Mexican food, this place will work. There is nothing really bad or really great about the food, atmosphere or service at Super Mex. It is like the Toyota Camry of Mexican food - it won't impress you or disappoint you as long as you keep your expectations at an average, unhealthy dining and food experience. Personally I thought it was a tad bit overpriced for what they deliver but might go back again if hungover and seeking some greasy Messy-can food and looking for a step up from Taco Bell.

OK TASTE, FAIR SERVICE, JUST NOT OUTSTANDING.... I have been to this SuperMex joint for like 3-4 times. Since I am a semi-vegan, I usually order the fish burrito or the fish tostada. Usually I will have to seat myself because the servers over there are not very attentive, but that OK, I got used to it. Anyhow, the fish Supermex burrito is huge and pretty tasty and hot, and their salsa chips are pretty good snack also, so I would say for the food I can't complain. Price-wise it is a bit on the high side, with the drink it usually gets to be around $12 buck for a lunch, more then the Souplantation charges for lunch. They are kinda slow on giving me the bill, so I usually have to wave them down to get a bill going. All in all this joint is alright, just not above the par as far as the service goes.....

I have been looking to try another Mexican Restaurant in Irvine. Seeing the mixed reviews on Yelp, I thought I'd stop by and give it a try. I ordered takeout, so I can't rate service - only the food I ordered and ate at home. I opened my bag to find a container of Salsa and giant round tortillas that were fried to be chips. I thought that this was different and kind of cool. When cracking them and tasting the salsa -- I thought it was just ok. The salsa was not bad at all, just not memorable or special. Overall, I did enjoy it. I ordered one Enchilada (beef) with red sauce and the other (chicken) with green sauce. Sadly, both were absolutely the most unappetizing I have ever had. Took 2 bites from each and tossed them in the trash. For the moment, I will stick with La Sirena or Jalapeno's in Irvine. Next up to try is TiaJuanas on Sand Canyon. I am afraid to try this place, but have to get there. If you want really good Mexican Food - just make the drive to Los Sanchez in Garden Grove. Been going there for over 20 years and they NEVER let me down.

Don't let the name fool you, the food is definitely Mex but it's service is far from Super.... After being in the hospital for a week (long story) I was stoked to be able to eat solid foods and drink! Luckily my friend was free and we decided, "Hey it's Tuesday right? Let's hit up a Taco Tuesday." My buddy had to deposit his paycheck at the new Chase branch right on Culver and we decided since we we're already here to have our Taco Tuesday @ Super Mex..... Yea bad call on our part, we came in and asked the server if there was any specials for Taco Tuesday, she told us that there was only a margarita special for $3.50....but taco's were full price Being lazy alcoholics we decided to just stay, as we were standing there awkwardly the host told us to seat ourselves. ummm ok sure. The service was pretty awful, every time we needed something...like you know...menu's, silverware, and refills we had to wave down a server, not a single person checked up on us The margarita's came out quickly, however my buddy and I were ready to order a 2nd round before our food came out (mind you we got them blended so it wasn't like we were pounding them) and the chips and salsa we had were really weird, the chips were like giant plates you had to snap into smaller pieces in order to dip into the watery salsa Finally about 30 minutes later our food comes out my buddy ordered the Chicken Nacho's and my #22 (a platter with your choice of meat in 1 taco, choice of meat in 1 enchilada, rice and beans) Not gonna lie the beans were really good! I could feel my arteries clogging up with each greasy, cheesy bite, but it's the holiday's damnit I'm going to indulge a little. The taco was pretty decent, and the enchilada saved the night, great flavor on that bad boy After stuffing our faces we got our bill and it came out a little pricey for what we got in my opinion but either way I was just happy to have something other than hospital food Will I come back? Well, maybe if they jump on the bandwagon and have a Taco Tuesday I will

Decent Mexican food at a decent price. Located in a strip mall in Irvine - outside decor is so-so. They do have a small patio for outdoor dining. Inside they have decorated so it feels like you're eating outside - they have street lamps placed around the tables and large sun umbrellas over the tables. We were seated pretty quickly when we arrived. Service was top-notch but then again, the place wasn't all that busy. They bring over salsa (hot) and large tortillas which you can break into individual chips (see photo). I ordered the Asada burrito, wet, and it is HUGE. I had enough to take home and enjoy the next day. The burrito is filled with a lot of steak and topped with cheese and red sauce. We ordered guacamole on the side. Interestingly (for me anyway) was that the guac had shredded lettuce in it! Different but still tasty.

My boyfriend and I come here when we want delicious, easy, down-to-earth Mexican food. I have tried many items on the menu but my favorite are the shredded beef enchiladas with rice (the green kind) and beans! yummo! It's a great place to come on a sunny afternoon and sit on the patio. People watch, soak up the sun and maybe even enjoy a refreshing adult beverage. The staff are friendly and do not rush you to eat and leave. When you first arrive there may or may not been someone there to seat you-- you are not being ignored. Just seat yourself and someone comes over with chips and salsa to take your drink order! eat. drink. stay a while :)

i always ate in the surrounding restaurants but never really had the urge to try super mex (i guess i was just being biased about the name of the place...). but i stopped by here for lunch with my coworkers and i was pleasantly surprised how affordable, quick, and delicious the food was. i got the "lite" burrito (which i didnt agree with as far as the "lite" goes). it was a burrito with wheat tortilla opposed to the regular flour tortilla... i guess its a little healthier but by no means "liter". my coworker got this braised pork scrambled in eggs and THAT was amazing! it came with a side of rice and beans and i was pretty jealous i didnt get that instead of my burrito. this place was empty when we walked in (exactly 12pm) and by 12:30, this place was PACKED! i guess its a sure sign that super mex is doing something right. i would definitely come back here for that scrambled egg dish (forgot what it was called).

The food was very delicious, but not good proportions. I ordered the 2 cheese enchilada with rice and beans. The cheese enchiladas were delicious, but the only problem was that there wasn't very many beans or really any that came with it for the to go box. It was definitely good, but I probably won't be back because the price is a bit high for what it is.

Have been eating at Super Mex (different locations) for many years. I would not consider myself a Mexican food type of person, however when you want a decent burrito you will find it here. They are known for there "Super" burritos packed with all that you want and more. They serve you chips and salsa (both made in house) practically before you sit down. The service has always been good, but usually nothing spectacular. I noticed that this location is great for large group accommodations, as well as popular with families that have children. The "mini chimis" appetizer is great! At the moment, you will have trouble finding this location because the center is under construction. If you are in the center near the Elephant Bar, it is practically straight across the parking lot just a few doors down from CVS.

Love their complimentary chips and salsa. Always fresh when I've gone here. Price is moderate and fair. Tonight was the first time I've gone here in years though. I ordered a #26: choice of taco and tamale with rice and beans with a horchata. Horchata was nothing special but still satisfied my horchata craving. Chicken taco was yummy. Chicken tamale was dissappointing! It did not taste fresh. It tasted like it had freezer burn and was a little "fishy", even though it was a chiken taco. My husband, baby, and I got there no later than 5:30 on a Friday night. When we were almost done eating, the place started getting packed. The service was ok. Only saw our waiter twice. The place was so busy with maybe not enough Staff? I'd def go back. I'd just be afraid of ordering the chicken tamale again.

Supermex has great chips and salsa, iced tea, and food. The shredded beaf taco's are the best taco's i've ever eaten. #32, carne asada plate is what I normally get. Very good. Also have good abondigas and cocido (meatball and vegetable soups).

Despite the fact that everyone working here literally speaks barely any english, and when you ask them a question, they have a dumbfounded look on thei face like they dont understand you, the food here is quite freakin tasty. The chips are okay, but would prefer them bitesized instead of having to break them apart, and the salsa looks like red water, mixed with aged tomatoes and peppers, but is actually not that bad. These guys make the best tamales and enchildas evar, and the beans are incredible. Its pretty obvious tho that the food is nuked for atleast 4 minutes, because the devil himself cannot touch the plate being brought out to you, (which the waitress has to carry with two towels to prevent a 3rd degree burn.) Its pretty obvious they whore cheese, cause you have to move it to see your meal buried beneath it, most of the time. The other time when its not cheese, its the red chili sauce, which tastes like spicy spaghetti O sauce to me. The red chili sauce is tasty, but unnessary to teach your food how to swim in. If you have excess sauce like this, put it in a chicken taco, its good inside it. Service wise, You bettter put "Super Mex Bill" on your last will, because you'd think the check would be given to your grandchildren, because it literally takes FOREVER to come. All in all, great food, bad service, and shitty music. No one wants to listen to AIE CARAMBA and spanish music playing repeatedly over and over and over again blasting in your ears. Super Loud. Also, stay away from the outdoor heaters, they will make the top of your head combust spontaneously, and bring it to ignition temperatures quickly. X)

This isn't upscale dining, but neither is it a dive. Prices are reasonable for the portions, I could have easily made my meal into two had I not skipped lunch. It's pretty standard for the tex-mex variety, both in food quality and price. You get good food for a decent price. I ordered combination 21, Chicken Enchilada with Beef Tamale that comes with Rice and Beans. I was pleasantly surprised to see that three of their tostada chips and a thing of salsa were thrown into my takeout bag. I've been to places that don't always comp that for a take out order. Chips were clearly fresh out of the fryer. Hot, still a bit oily, I had to break off a piece in the car. Good salt content on them, enough to add to the flavor, but not so much it's overpowering. Salsa I had to wait to try until I got home but I was also quite happy with it. It's a bit runny, so you have to scoop but it's got a nice kick to it, not merely tomato water. Meat in both the enchilada and tamale was nice and tender. The corn for the tamale was flaky, just how I like it. There was a bit too much sauce for my liking, it didn't need to be smothered in sauce and cheese on top because the flavors were good on their own. It's easily brushed off to the side though. And it mixed well with the beans when I thinned it out some. Beans and rice were tasty, although the portions were a little uneven. I had a lot more beans than rice. It was all good, but I love rice so I would have enjoyed having a bit more of that. Everything was hot and the cheese on top of the beans was good and melted-no half melted cheese for me. Satisfied my hunger and craving for mexican. I'd come back for another meal.

My office has served Super Mex take-out appetizers for some of our happy hours in the office and every time I've had their food at work, the appetizers (mini chimichangas & pepper poppers) been really tasty. So, I decided to give it a try for dinner. I was gravely disappointed. I had the carne asada tacos and my bf had the two enchilada combo. The meat was super greasy and not tasty at all. The rice and beans were SO uneventful and tasted liked day old food (BLAND). The enchiladas were mainly cheese and oil on top of the tortillas...so hardly any meat! The chips were decent but the salsa was runny and not spicy at all. The service was really good and the waiter was very helpful. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back here for their food!

Fell in love with the fullerton location happy to see the irvine location. As a chips and salsa fanatic, this place is my favorite hands down. Don't diss the full round tostadas they use chips, serving them this way adds a different flavor you cannot get elsewhere. Now to the food, it's not spectacular but it can hold it's own against Don Joses or similar restaurants. My favorite is the Asada Burrito, but the carnitas are delicious too. Albondigas is very traditionally prepared and can really hit the spot on a cold night. Rice and beans are nice and hot with lots of cheese on the beans. I like to just order a large salsa and few bags of chips to go just to take to peoples houses for parties and such.

Went here for Cinco de Mayo and had a good dinner. It was very busy, as you might expect, but the service was pleasant, attentive and the food was good. I ordered a shredded beef enchilada combo with rice and beans and a margarita. The drink was fully loaded and worth the happy hour price of $3.50. My wife, the real foodie, had the chili reino combo and says it was also very good. Our daughter had a ground beef soft taco and she ate the whole thing. It was loaded with cheese, which she loves. The one complaint is that the salsa is a bit too runny and the chips were stale, but overall we had a good dinner at a decent price. I had a 50% off coupon, so we had dinner for three people with two margaritas for just $15! I give it three stars based on quality and price.

We've been here twice and the food was better tasting than Jalapeno's. It is also more expensive. We spend about $30 for 2 (incl tx & tip). The service is uneven; good the first time barely acceptable last night. Ask for Sergio, he's conscientious and friendly. Wish El Farolita in Placentia would move closer.

I really think Super-Mex stands for Super-Cock. Like the one thats going to make you bend over everytime you place an order from this place. $10.99 for a half ass burrito, stale rice and some poop looking beans. No thank you. Does this place actually think they are El Torritos? Update: During lunch hours, this place is completely dead. Maybe they can get a clue that their prices freakin suck.

Last Friday, I convinced the my coworkers, and more importantly my boss, that we deserved a long lunch... to Super Mex we went. We arrived right around noon, and given that there were 8 of us, we did have to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Perhaps had it not been raining, the extra tables on the patio would have alleviated the wait time. Once we were seated, we were promptly given several baskets of chips and salsa... I LOVE their salsa. We placed our orders and continued to be fed more chips and salsa as we waited for our food to be brought out. It was quite busy, so we had to wait a bit.... but who is really in a rush to get back to the office on a Friday afternoon? We all got our food, and everyone seemed to enjoy, although I doubt any of these guys would turn away a plate that at least resembled something edible. I can speak for my food though, I got a chicken taco plate that was very tasty... chicken wasn't dry and my beans tasted great. The waiter was very friendly and was on top of things like the recurrent multiple soda refill requests. I definitely recommend this Super Mex location, even if you have a bigger group. I know we'll be back!

We always used to eat at the location on Beach Blvd. when we lived in Huntington Beach. Now we only get to eat at Super Mex when we are out visiting family. I think this Irvine location serves up pretty consistently good food. We love their tacos and also the carnitas. Super Mex is on our 'must stop' list when visiting So Cal.

They should rename this place "La mejor comida Mexicana de calidad en todos los de Irvine", because in the few strip malls that encompass central Irvine, Super Mex is pretty much at the top of the game. You'll already suspect that Super Mex isn't the most "authentic" Mexican food around, but during 3 to 4 days out of the week, I'm gonna tell you that's no skin off my back. You'd be hard pressed to find an authentic taco truck stationed in Irvine, but when you've got the urge to stuff yourself with a giant tasty burrito, Super Mex does the job quite nicely. This cozy joint is dimly lit and somewhat modern, has a patio, and features a kick ass Margarita bar. These guys also have what I'll call the big C's for a Mexican joint. C-omidas en grandes porciones C-alidad C-uesta poco Their basic variety of favorites include some humongous burritos, freshly fried taquitos, and fresh guacamole. Sorry, no lard. Try not to get too stuffed on their whole corn tortilla chips. Those suckers are thick and addicting with that "somewhat" spicy salsa. I'm a fan of the GROUND BEEF burrito, which is a nice departure from shredded. The beef is seasoned, and it's a nice belly buster with all that red sauce and cheese drizzled all over. Add on a "horchata" (or margarita), friendly and attentive service (bumps them up to a 4), and it's not a bad bite, and will leave you quite satisfied. Makes a GREAT hangover meal! Note: They have other locations, the main being in Long Beach.

Enjoy this place. We come here when we want a fast meal that doesn't come in a bag. The food is good, service is great, and the restaurant is clean. It's not a quiet place, but that's not what we necessarily want. TV's are also well placed if one wants to catch a game.

I've been going to this Super Mex for years and it's a great local place for consistent, good Mexican food. Although the prices have gone up a tad (what hasn't though?), I still like Super Mex! I always get the number 1 combo with a beef taco and cheese enchilada. It comes with beans only, no rice, which is a little odd, but it's still more food then I can eat comfortably. Their salsa has a nice kick to it, and their pico de gallo (ask for it) is perfectly cilantro-y. Love it.

Coming from San Diego I should give this place 3 stars, but I live in Irvine... so I'm going with 4.5, which I can't select so I'll go with 4. Thank god I found this place upon moving, because I would have died without a decent somewhat authentic mexican resteraunt. Pretty good mexican food, especially the combos. They have a seasonal soup too that is killer. This is about as close to a one-off authentic shop as Irvine has, even though there are many of these in SoCal. If you find yourself going to Taco Rosa, or on the border once in a while for mexican, you have to go here instead.

I have been to this place many times. Some times good and some times not so good. I would like it to be consistent in the taste of the food. I am not sure what is causing the up/down problem but I wish they would fix it. When it is good, it is good--the best around. But then you go back ....... Sorry wish the review could be better.

My husband seems to relly enjoy the "tex-mex" eatery. Eh - I've had better. Again, difficult to find a good Mexican food place in Irvine. Pros: Good atmosphere, great service. The servers are always pleasant and quick. The free and constantly refilled salsa bowl and chips is my favorite thing. Cons: The Carne Asada doesn't have the tender, flavorful, marinated taste as most taco trucks. And I don't like gaucamole and pico de gallo mush in my tacos. Price is reasonable. Parking is plentiful. TV's always showing the game of the moment. Flavor - questionable.

Just A-OK and nothing more... Food was average... but what can you really expect from buying mexican food in irvine yanno?? if you want real mexican food u know where u need to go haha... The prices were a little high for mexican food, but again, nothing in Irvine is cheap... The one positive i found with this place is they have a "lite" menu for fat ppl like me who want to eat healthier... I got the lite whole wheat chicken burrito... it comes with a whole wheat tortilla instead of corn or flour.... it coes with grilled chicken, rice, beans, lettuce, salsa and guacamole on the side... i know cheese and sour creme is probably the best part of having mexican food... but i'm watching my figure! lol

One of the better authentic Mexican food restaurants in the area. If you are craving food Mexican food, this place will hit the spot.

I freely admit that everything I've tried in Irvine is blah. That being said, I dined at Super Mex last night and it is probably the best you can expect for the area. Salsa has a nice roasted flavor, they have a sufficent selection of alcohol and the food is good enough. Service is okay - they forgot our request for water twice and brought us a broken beer glass, but the food came out quick without mistakes. If you frequent Mexican restaurants with cerveza girl pinups, soccer games, birria, menudo, and pozole on weekends, bathrooms that require tokens, be prepared for serious dissapointment. If you like the tortilla maker at Chevy's, you'll be alright at Super Mex.

Great Carnitas here. Good place to get lunch, and maybe a beer.

I've been going here for over a decade and always satisfied. Great Chips and Salsa, chili relleno, and shredded beef tacos. My kids "beg" for their refried beans. There are usually a drink special or two per day. The staff seems to have longevity, and if not friendly- efficient. It's dirt cheap and good filling food. Perfect for this middle class family.

I've been here once before but it's been a long time. The place is really close to my house so it's convenient. The chips and salsa that they give you is pretty good. Not really spicy though. I ordered a side of pico de gallo and it was bland. The flavors were so raw that I tried to mix the two salsas together. This didn't improve the flavor so I just stuck with the salsa that they give you with the chips. I ordered the fish tacos. They were alright. They were of decent size though. Service was good. The restaurant was crowded so they must be doing something else right. Maybe I'm just used to the Mexican food in San Diego and SF.

I reccommend the shredded beef tacos, old school fried tacos! The SuperMex Margarita is great, comes with a shot of Grand Marnier. Chips and salsa are good (tortillas are fried whole, so you break them yourself). Service is good at this location, order come out of the kitchen quickly.

Although it's not a holiday in Mexico, I felt like taking part in the US 'commercially marketed' day of Cinco de Mayo and went and tried some food here. The menu has it's standard fare of entree dishes, but instead of ordering a burrito or taco, I wanted something a lil off the routine and ordered a chile rellenos and albondigas soup. Both are more traditional dishes that aren't always easy to prepare "just like mom makes them". That being said, they were both pretty good. I liked the rellenos a lot actually, but just average with the soup. The soup had a lot of grease, which I'm not used to. But the amount of meatballs was pretty good and the flavor of the soup was good, pulling from the carrots, potatoes, and celery as well as the meat. But I've had some authentic albondigas soup that just can't be matched anywhere (unless it's another mom's cooking) so that's also partly why it was just okay. The chile rellenos was nice and wasn't overly stuffed with queso. and the batter was light and airy and not greasy at all. And the red sauce which tasted like an enchilada sauce was very nice. Topped with more shredded cheese, i could have eaten about 4-5 more. The atmosphere was very upbeat and festive, as it should be. The servers were very polite and very attentive. I wanted to stay longer and take advantage of their margarita specials, but I knew that wasn't on the allowed food list before hitting the gym (D'oh!). I'll be back to try the rest of the menu. Oh and if you order via on-line, first time customers will get 10% off the order; pretty sweet deal (I should have ordered more).

Meh - I like the Super Mex in Fullerton better since it's a little bit cheaper then this one. I like their food, but I wasn't impressed with the service here. It is a good place if you want cheap Mexican food around Irvine.

For price and quantity of food, this place offers a pretty good deal. Servers are helpful. Burritos are HUGE, you can eat half and bring the other half home as a snack or meal. Be sure to get it wet. edit 5/3/08: Came here again and had myself a whole wheat chicken burrito (on the lite menu). Delicious! It was too big for me to finish in one sitting. Love how Super Mex throws in tortillas and salsa.

    (3)
  • Mary M.

The whole wheat chicken burrito on the lite menu is my favorite entree... It's about $8, which I think is pretty good for the amount of food you're getting. Tue's are great for 1/2 price margs. They make 'em strong N keep 'em comin :D

shortly below average mexican food place. The service is really good here thats probably the best thing about the place. The food has that microwave mexican food feeling to it, i wouldnt be suprised if the food was cooked by microwave. If you could rate this place by words it would be a "ehhh" :::shakes hand sea saw motion:::

  • Allie M.

I was really looking forward to a burrito, and thought I would try something other than Chipotle. Needless to say, I wasn't too impressed. It was a bit pricey. They were big though... but like, just lacked flavor or something. The chicken seemed a little dry to me too. I would give this place a second try, just not the burittos...

Love this place! Have been to Irvine and Long Beach locations. The food is always fresh and tastes great! I love everything here, usually order a combo plate or a bean and cheese burrito. Anything you order will be better than expected! Chips and salsa are tasty and the service has always been excellent! My husband and I go or order takeout at least once week! Highly recommend!

  • Ana D.

I am mexican and this is pretty authentic. In Irvine, there is very little that is authentic, but this place has large burritos and tasty enchiladas. Yeah the rice and beans can use a lesson from me or my mom, but what can we expect. I have been there about a dozen times and they have yet to disappoint me.

    (4)
  • j s.

Food tastes like paint, and the service is slow. Seriously, the taco shell I had tasted like paint thinner. It was inedible.

    (1)
  • Anne M.

Typical, average Mexican food. The one exception however is the lite menu which features several options using whole wheat tortillas and reduced fat cheese. I usually get the chicken burrito and it's very good. You don't feel like you're eating a "healthy" burrito. The green rice served on the lite menu is also pretty good.

  • Roland O.

Eh.......Big portions, not so big on flavor. I tried their super mex burrito and it was a huge disappointment. I can honestly say it was one of the dryest wet burrito's I have ever had. Does that even make sense? Well it sure does because their carnitas suck. For me the test of a good mexican joint is how good their pork products turn out. Yeah Yeah, ya'll like chicken and carne asada zzzzzzzzzzz. Maybe those items are decent but their carnita's blows. Its dry and flaky and tastes like pork jerky. Stay away from it.

  • Mike D.

Skip it. The service was pretty good (which is why they get 2 stars), even though we went during happy hour and all the servers/bartenders were eating in the dining room/licking their fingers while serving...gross. The margaritas were horrible...worst I've had in years, pure synthetic mix with some rot gut tequila. Really DISGUSTING! Chips were a whole fried tortilla with bland old salsa. It was all discolored and oxidized and watery. The food was pretty lousy, everything was very processed tasting. Rice tasted like a package mix, like chicken powder seasoning from Rice a Roni. The beans were good but tasted canned. The green chili pork dish was old tasting, dry and bland. There was no vegetable at all on the whole plate. There was nothing fresh about the food. My wife's fish tacos were filled with gamey tasting fish that had blood line all through them. I will not be back here...service was pretty nice but you can't and don't eat that. Super Mex has plain, processed, awful food and the worst margarita in the OC.

My favorite Mexican. Cheap and delicious and big portions. The machaca is especially good. We've been eating there for 10 yrs.

Love that they have a light menu. I really enjoy the shredded chicken bowl. Everyone seems to enjoy their burritos and tacos. LOVE LOVE the salsa. I think I could drink that stuff. Staff is ok so they're lucky that the food is good.

    (3)
  • Ben F.

Their burritos are great and I'm a huge fan of their chips and dip. I usually order my food to go. I've eaten here quite a few times and usually it goes without a hitch. Occasionally they'll get my order wrong and I'll have to wait around for them to fix it. All in all though, this is great moderately priced Mexican food.

  • Daniel P.

I don't know what's wrong with people these days. We were seated at about the same time next to a family that was very demanding and rude to the waiter, then when their check came, they used their "poor" service to justify stiffing the waiter on the tip. I don't know what their problem was. The waiter was super attentive and the food was at the table (both ours and theirs) within 5 minutes of ordering. Enough though about my comments on stupid people in society. Their Super Mex Burritos are awesome. Their enchiladas are awesome. Their salsa is awesome. Their service has always been wonderful. The prices are very resonable for what they offer...I'd way rather eat here than at one of the "big players" (think acapulco, el torito, on the border). As far as Irvine goes, this is without a doubt the best full-service Mexican Restuarant there is.

As far as I can tell, not all Super Mex locations have the same quality of food. I'd really like to try the food at the original location in Downtown Long Beach for comparison. The service at the Irvine location is very good. The servers are friendly, and the food always comes out very quickly. I've only eaten here on week nights, and there has never been a wait. Often I've come with a large group, and they can easily accommodate us by putting several tables together. The chips are whole fried corn tortillas, so they are thicker than the chips served at most Mexican restaurants. The salsa is very good with a nice spice. I usually stick with the burritos. The Junior Mex is just the right size for me if I'm pretty hungry, and if I get the Super Mex size, I can eat half and take the rest home for lunch the next day. I like the shredded chicken or veggie (really the ground beef burrito without the meat). The red sauce the burrito is smothered in is awesome! Very tangy and keeps the burrito nice and moist. They are good about holding the cheese and sour cream for lil' old lactose-intolerant me, and you can have them add tomatoes or any other ingredient to your burrito if you want. They also come with guacamole on top. Even though I really like their burritos, I can only give Super Mex 3 stars because I have not liked their other menu items. I tried their fish tacos and they were very greasy. I've had better at Rubio's. I also tried their chicken Caesar salad, and the "grilled" chicken tasted fried in oil and was very dry. Stick with the burritos and you'll have a great meal!

I've always enjoyed coming here and have only eaten their soup and lite chicken taco meal. I love the portions...delicious and tasty! Service is usually fast and they haven't messed that up for me.

i'm always pleasantly surprised to find another decent mexican restaurant in irvine...Super Mex is located in the big Ralphs/CVS/L&L/Wendy's plaza next to the Koba Tofu House so parking is never really a huge issue. After a night of drinking and partying, i knew mexican food would be the perfect cure to my hangover so the bf and i decided to check this place out since it's near his apartment. the chips and salsa were pretty tasty. although the "chips" are more like big, fried tortillas where you have to break pieces off, the salsa was really flavorful and had a slight kick to it which i could actually handle since i'm a baby when it comes to spicy foods haha. for my lunch dish, i ordered the combo #22, 1 chicken taco and ground beef enchilada served with rice and beans ($8)...i wouldnt say that i was blown away by my dish..it wasnt anything super special, but for what i needed at that moment, the food definitely hit the spot! food was tasty, decent enough service, and affordable prices...that's all i need haha

Chips and Salsa are good althought the chips are a bit greasy and oversalted. As one who has grown up in a mexican family, I am a bit picky with my mex and this one was definately authentically not that great mexican food (its authentic all right but not very good). I am a sucker for beef machaca ( a simple dish with shreaded beef, chilis and egg scrambled into the shredded beef mixture, onions, etc.). Beef machaca is either good or it is not. Lets just say that I am not one to throw food out especially after biking all the way across Irvine to eat but after three bites...I paid and left. Even my filipino wife who is no mex food expert or snob didnt finish much of her meal. Bummer I'm still lookin for a good mex meal in Irvine.

If I could give Super Mex 1.5 stars, I would. I got the #14 (two cheese enchiladas, rice and beans) and a margarita. It was a Tuesday night and on Tuesdays they have $3.50 margaritas. I probably should have stuck with a beer or something because the margarita was pretty pisspoor. Tasted like a margarita flavored slurpee. Really sweet and watery. 16oz of no thanks. Then came my cheese enchiladas ($7.75 i think?). Nothing special at all. I didn't like the red sauce they used in the slightest. Everything about is was very bland and reminded me of the microwavable cheese enchiladas you can get from Trader Joe's or something. Definitely not worth the $7.75 price tag. The chips were soaked in lard. A couple of the chips were even soggy because they had so much lard clinging to them. The chips that weren't soggy tasted burnt. Redeeming factor: the salsa. I think the salsa's reallllly good, I just wish their food was of the same quality. This place is my dad's favorite restaurant and he got the Cocido. I wouldn't be caught dead at a Super Mex if it weren't for my dad's birthday. Happy birthday dad, hope you enjoyed your meal.

Like everyone says they got decent salsa and chips. But if you want a burrito you can eat for lunch and then snack on later, you hit the right spot. The food is just arrrright, but for the convenience, and limited taco eateries in Irvine, it will do. Definately not one of the first places I would even go in Irvine either. If you really want, down the street about 2min away, you can get better and quality mexican food

  • Cindy L.

Maybe it's not fair that I'm giving this two stars. I grew up in El Monte and we have legit Mexican food. But I wasn't expecting that. I was just expecting for some decent food, just to satisfy a craving. My friends and I failed at getting to an Indian restaurant and just ended up here out of hunger. I haven't had Mexican food in awhile, since I haven't been home. Service was pretty decent. Prompt and the server was very kind. We were served chips and salsa quickly. It was decent. We got a second batch after we finished our first, but sadly, this batch was really oily. I know chips are fried, but when it's glimmering with oil, it's kinda a put-off. I ordered the super-mex vegi burrito. Inside was lettuce, beans, and rice. The outside was smothered in red sauce and cheese, like an enchilada. It was also served with a side of guacamole. The burrito is pretty big, and got me full about halfway through. The burrito tasted bland, despite the sauce. It had no complexity of flavors and tasted just like a bean burrito. Hot sauce helped, but overall, the burrito tasted just bleh. Also, because it is just a vegi burrito, I felt like it was a bit on the expensive side at about 6-7 dollars. Overall, I might give it a second chance if my friends want to go again, but I'm gonna keep my search for decent Mexican food in Irvine. Hopefully, I'll find it before graduation.

I thought Super Mex was yummers por almuerzo. Pero a menos personas digame no le gusta la comida. Yo pienso, porque? Es muy deliciosa. Entonces pienso, "Soy loca?" Tenia un chimichanga de carne y tortillas fritas. Que Bueno!

  • Kenny B.

I would give this a higher score, but the last time I went (on a Sunday night), it was like they used the leftover food from the previous week to make my dinner. Very disappointed that time with the quality of the food and the service. Hopefully it was a fluke. Most of the other times I have gone the food has been great. Nachos = great. Tacos = great. Margaritas = decent. Chips and salsa = nice and spicy. I think its going to be a few months before I decide to go back again; someone give me more reasons to go back...!

This place is terrible. My friends convinced me to give it another shot because last time I remember it being a overpriced, imitation Mexican resturaunt. Still is. No flavor and crazy high prices.

Go for the chips and salsa ALONE! Then, order a Super Mex Burrito with steak, and enjoy. Don't forget the Pacifico, or XX, or Sol. (Just not a Corona!)

    (4)
  • Kristen M.

We come here a lot. The food is good, the beer is cheap. What more can you ask for? On a nice day it's great to sit out on the patio with friends and margaritas.

  • Scott B.

Service was pretty stankin' good. I had 3 different servers come over to refill my water, bring me extra chips and salsa, and deliver my food. Yeah, it's not the greatest, but for the price it's not too shabby. I usually get the beef taco and beef enchilada combo with rice and beans. It's enough food for my hungry-man appetite, plus I'm a sucker for free chips and salsa. Come hungry or don't bother going to Super Mex.

My family has been going to Super Mex for several years and I can't tell you how much we enjoy their food. The soft chicken tacos and carne asada are amazing! Top it off with a pitcher of Tecate and life is good!

Been going there forever ..SuperMex is good, clean, and consistant. Tamales are decent, and their shredded beef is tasty like roast beef ..great in quesadillas! ...Nice people, fast service, cold beers, big menu ...dine-in, or get it to-go ..convenient either way.

Mmmmmm. Super Mex! Ordered the Super Mex Asada burrito yesterday - with the sauce on the side. SO delicious. My only complaint, I asked for lemon with my diet coke and got lime. I thought maybe they didnt have lemon - but the water at the table next to me, had a big lemon slice on it.... odd. Good service and good food!

Worse place I have ever been too ... Not worth going. The waitress Kelsey took forever to take our order , refill our waters , and bring our food .... We had to ask her a question and she just turns around ... The only thing good here is their chips . What kind of Mexican restaurant is this ....

    (1)
  • Johnny T.

I have been coming here for years. Always amazing food and attentive service. I'm not a needy diner by all means, I only require 1 refill and a smile, that's all! I went there today and just pretty much should have served myself. Our server pretty took our order with an annoyed face, brought us our water and left us there, never to be seen again till about 40 minutes later. At the end he comes waltzing up with a box and he check. I have always left 20% or more tips just for minimal service. I left him about 50 cents.

    (2)

It's all about the beef taquitos! The taquitos are the epitome of the perfect taquitos! Also, if you're a chips and salsa person, you'll be one happy camper!

  • Benjamin N.

I love the one in Huntington Beach. Quick service and nice servers. This one is the exact opposite. I walked in and it had a sign that said please seat yourself so I did, outside. Most of the tables were dirty so I found one, I sat, and I waited, 10 minutes. Nobody came to my table, nobody brought us water. Nobody greeted us. So I left with my family and we won't be back again. I have a strong feeling it was a bad day, but when you have a 3 star rating on yelp ( I didn't check before I went) it just goes to show you are running a sub par restaurant.

    (1)
  • Armen K.

Good place to hang out with your friends. This is not a place for awesome costumer service, so don't get upset when you have to get your own chips and salsa several times. Overall the door is good, place is clean and the servers are nice.

  • Drea H.

Food was good, atmosphere was festive & inviting, but I was disappointed with their service. This was my first time here. I stopped in during my lunch break - I only have an hour lunch & was already running short on time. I ran in, ordered to-go, and went to run an errand. Came back in 10 min and although there were waiters standing around, it took about 6 minutes for someone to come help me & grab my food that was just sitting across the counter. Ridiculous. The food was good but I probably wont be coming back.

For some reason this Super Mex is not as good as their two other locations in Long Beach. It just doesn't taste like authentic Mexican food. Won't be coming back to this location. I'll stick with the ones in Long Beach.

  • Z A.

I've gone to Super Mex for years. However, this location (Irvine) seems much different than the other Super Mex's that I've been to. As of late, they seem to have changed their beans and rice and some of their other dishes just don't taste as good anymore. The beans taste like canned Rosarita refired beans and the rice is dry and had no flavor. I will not go back there. They need to go back to their old cook or old recipe because the quality of their food stinks right now.

My table waited an hour for lunch on a Sunday. We ended up getting up and leaving. Are there any good reasonable Mexican places in irvine?

    (1)
  • Priscilla P.

looking for heartburn on a plate? look no further! the free chips and salsa and the refried beans and rice that accompany many of the dishes will seriously damage the waistline. everything is overloaded with processed cheese, the ground beef tastes like taco bell's, just ...no.

It was kinda like walking into a friends house and raiding their kitchen for dinner... and paying for it. Really, I was amused. The guy and I walk in and a sign is up at the host stand, "Please Seat Yourself." Ok. We can do that. "Weeeee-crunch-crunch-weeeee-zing-wheee-woooo-grrrr-weee!" Two bartenders where trying to resurrect a blender on its last legs. It sounded like it was definitely dying and they were gonna squeeze every last Margarita out of it if it killed them. We found a seat at the back the restaurant as far away from what I thought would be the flying shrapnel of blender blades for when the damned thing exploded. "You still wanna eat here, hunny?" "Yeah, it sounds good!" "Ooooookay..." There was one menu on the table. Didn't see a server for quite a while, and someone came up to pinch-hit for our server (I think, one of the blender surgeons.) He got us our drinks till our server could help us. "Weeee-zug-zug-zug-crunch-weeeee!!!!" Jesus, people, can you can HEAR whats happening?? Stop ordering the blended drinks unless you would like it with a nice chunk of blender metal or plastic!! Server guy brings our food. Looks great. Two shredded beef enchiladas combo plate for me, a big chicken burrito for my guy. "Is there anything else I can get you?," server guy asks. "Ummm... silverware?" "Oh, right." All in all, it was good. Nothing memorable, but filling and tasty. The salsa, as usual, was spot-on. We don't see him again for a while, but we knew why. "Ziiiiiiing-weeeee-rubrubrubrub-weeeee-oooooo-eeeeee!!!" "Ok I'm gonna walk up there and unplug that god-forsaken thing." Family beside us is speaking loudly: Middle aged son is telling his elderly parents about his new girlfriend. She sounds freaky-deaky. His mom is mortified. His dad is blocking out the details. "Crunch-crunch-wub-wub-weeeeeeeeeeee!" "Oh man turn that thing up! I don't wanna hear about this guys exploits!" Dinner AND a show. $17.99 for two. Can't beat it. Oh and new quick-tip: Bring a flack jacket and helmet if you sit near the bar.

Super Mex is the bomb! Best bean and cheese burrito I have ever had! My brother worked at Super Mex almost 15 years ago and he still misses the food! Simple but excellent Mexican food!!

  • Ash T.

The food here is excellent. You get a great lot of food when you order the "Super Mex" versions on the menu. Horchata was amazing and I recommend that for drinks. They also have Tuesday Margarita and Wednesday beer specials. Service was a little absent. I do like that you seat yourself, but once you get the food, the servers disappear. Planning to go again.

  • Tom S.

I've eaten here several times, and I do have to say the food is tasty. Not the best I've ever had, but for the money, it's not bad. BUT THE SERVICE! YIKES! There were several empty tables (I would say it was half to 2/3 full) and even though I did get my water, chips and menu right away, after I closed my menu and decided what I wanted, I kept expecting a server to come and take my order. NOT! I kept trying to make eye contact with any of the waiters (And I was seated very close to the bar and a service computer, so they were all milling around the area). Too bad they weren't looking for customers who needed service. A couple of servers looked like they were doing their job, but the rest of them, including what looked to be the manager, seemed more interested in chatting with one another and looking at some pictures on one of the waitresses cell phone. I still waited, and waited. One thing I learned a long time ago is that when service starts out poor, it only gets worse! So I packed up my book, got up and left after finishing my chips and salsa. Of course no one even noticed I had walked out because they were all too busy talking to one another. All I can say is Adios, Super Mex! The one good thing is that it forced me to walk across the parking lot and try the new Belgian style restaurant, Bruxie's. HUGE DIFFERENCE! Great place, and I will write another review on that.

Average food. Disappointing since I use to love the location in Long Beach. My SuperMex burrito was not bad, but the tacos and taquitos were soggy and much too greasy.

Service is awful. Food is so-so. The best thing is the chips and salsa. The meat inside the shredded beef tamale and enchiladas was tough and stringy. Save the 30 bucks and stick to Del Taco.

    (2)
  • Ayla A.

The complimentary chips and salsa is really good. Burrito is huge and filling. a good go-to mexican food :)

  • Bree G.

My husband and I were traveling through and stopped in. After we sat down, we checked the Yelp reviews. They were subpar. So our expectations were low. To our delight, the food was good (flautas and fajitas). There was a good amount of steak in the fajita and the flautas were quite large. The service was okay, but did take a bit of time.

    (4)

Nothing special. It's possibly the most generic, Americanized Mexican food that you can get. I don't really have much to say other than you can do better than coming here for "Mexican" food.

    (3)

Super Mex is super bad! Very slow service, greasy chips, and cockroaches crawling on the wall. We waited thirty minutes for the food to arrive and two more minutes for the roach. The waitress said she thinks it's a spider and proceeded to try to kill it on the wall. My 8 year old could see it was a roach. So here is the question. How many roaches are there if the waitress was obviously coached to tell the patrons the roaches are spiders? Fumigate and wait another ten years before returning.

Don't know why this place only has three stars. The beer is excellent, food excellent, and the guys even put on the game for us. I could eat here every day.

-2 stars for service. -1 star for - The waiter took down our order incorrectly and then showed contempt towards us when we corrected him (multiple times). Just to make it worse he didn't even repeat our order back to us so I wasn't sure if he ultimately g

Great experiance today. My buddy was running late so we put a rush on the food. They got it out pretty fast. I even needed some menu alterations and they changed them up with no problem. Carnitais was great and filling. Salsa has a nice kick to it and tasty frech chips. Michelle served us and was very nice. I have been here 10 times always a good meal.

Mmm, I was a little surprised at the low ratings here. I came here a day last week because Koba (next door) was too crowded, and thus I wandered in. The prices were very reasonable with the portions. There were six(?) beers on tap, with average prices, although 60 oz pitches for about 10$ at a restaurant is very reasonable. They had homemade chips as their free appetizers. Oh, and the food was goooooooood. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Although the service was okay (they were a bit understaffed), it was not anything special. My only regret? I wish I had gone on a day that had specials (Taco Tuesday, Happy hour..). I will be back.

Anytime we get something catered in thats not sandwiches is always a plus in my book. Todays offers was mexican food from Super Mex. Now we typically order from Jalapenos but today was something different. Our offices order DIY tacos which is nice because not everyone wants everything on their tacos. You could also mix it up by making a tostado if you want. I did find the enchiladas lacking in meat. Taquitos were ok but could have been a little crispier. The guacamole was good, I liked the chuckyness of the vegetables. Overall very satisfying meal.

Had a shredded beef super mex burrito from here today. Every time I've driven by I thought this place was going to be a small taco shop fast food kinda place. The diamond in the rough kinda place. Little did I know the place is actually a stolen set from a rejected Disney Land ride. I could tell the second I walked in there that the food was going to suck. And I was pretty spot on. Let me put it this way... if Campbell's made a burrito this is how it would taste. That was truly a generic experience.

Surprised with the service comments. We're regulars here and the food has always shown up Superfast. Our complaint is the Red Chili. It showed up looking like it had been frozen and then microwaved just for me. It was grey in color with a splash of chili sauce. Something has changed and its not for the better. Everything else tasted like it always has. If anyone has a good spot for Colorado Chili, please let me know.

All-in-all, the place is well-rounded: good food, good service, lively atmosphere, and fairly reasonable pricing. Not the most authentic Mexican food I've indulged in, but worth the visit.

After seeing my initial review the management staff reached out to me to offer me another try at their restaurant. I was happy to see they took the initiative to make an attempt to rectify their mistakes. Unfortunately, after the first email from them and several attempts on my end to reach back to them, I have not heard from them since and it has been over a month. I shouldn't be surprised though because their poor service was the bases for my original review. Shame on you for poor customer service SuperMex!

This place is so delicious! I am definitely coming back here. The only issues I had were slow service, and if you sit outside, it is rather dark in the evening. Other than that, one of the best Mexican restaurants in SoCal.

RENAME: "Subpar Mex" Eh... Overall, decent portions, moderate pricing... However, most of the entrees we tried were lacking in flavor = Bland The good - Tostada "chips" and salsa; fresh & tasty The WTF?! - The "Chile Relleno Burrito" (Unlike other similar burritos I've had w/an actual chile relleno, this merely had pieces of chiles in it.) Lame... 'Some nerve to actual call it a "Chile Relleno Burrito." It's just a burrito with pieces of chile in it... Is this a Taco Bell or 7-11 affiliate?... Tamale - Eh... 'On the small side; had better - Pau Food: 1 Ambiance: 3 Service: 3 Value: 1

Twice we've ordered the carnitas special and its still tasty! The carnitas is juicy, the salsa full of flavor & the guacamole is fresh. With tostadas, flour & corn tortillas to eat with, we were full and wanting more. I haven't tried anything else there but the carnitas are the way to go.

Both the meals my mother in law and I got were terrible. Mexican chicken Cesar salad was lettuce with chicken and tortilla strips NOTHING ELSE. Throw some tomatoes on or something guys. I also had a Bloody Mary that was straight tomato juice. Never stepping foot in that place again.

I haven't been here in a few months. The menu has changed a bit. But I was happy that they finally have my favorite guava margarita back! The food was good when we finally got it! We came in with a party of 11. The restaurant was not very busy at 2pm. We had a waiter named Nester who really wasn't that busy. Our kids got their food first and then then were finished before we got our food! Then we had to wait forever for Nester to take our credit card so we could leave. I guess we should have known we were in for trouble when we saw the signs for help wanted: cooks and servers.

I am surprised to see the recent poor reviews. I have been coming here for years and find the service and the food consistently good. There was a mistake on one of my call in orders a couple years ago which disappointed me but they were happy to comp me the item the next visit so I felt that service recovery was very fair. Try the chile relleno burrito and the machaca con huevos (beef) is absolutely delicious!!!! Tonight Carlos took my call in order and he was very courteous and helpful. Thanks!!

First, the smell of sewage hits you hard when you walk in and lingers through out your meal. Also, service was poor and we saw the manager and waitress roll their eyes after we informed them we were using a Groupon. Honestly, the food isn't that great but we thought the Groupon would make it more worth it. Not only did the waitress get our order wrong but the food was bland and greasy. You will walk away bloated and uncomfortable after a few bites. Normally I wouldn't bother writing a bad review for a $20 meal but its the principle. Even with the Groupon this place is a waste of money...

I've always loved super mex and remember going to visit my grandma in long beach and getting a bean and cheese burrito. They have always been my favorite. The only problem is the service in this location. I had to ask 3 different people to finally get a side of salsa. I'm not one to complain about servers considering I've been there before, but come on guys..... Really. Food is good, service is bad.

Our go-to place for fast casual Mexican food is Jalapenos, however, we settled for Super Mex as it was rather late at night and we couldn't make it all the way to a Jalapenos. First off, the service here is terrible. They had a sign for us to seat ourselves, which is fine, but it took a number of minutes to get menus and orders in, even though they clearly spotted us. Many of the tables around us were dirty, as though the dishes were cleared but no one bothered to come back to wipe them down. The other problem is that the plastic tumblers are red, so it's hard for the servers to tell when they're running low. I do like the chips, which are literally whole fried tortillas. The salsa that came with it has a hint of smoke, probably from chipotle peppers. The menu is not vegetarian-friendly, as a warning to you vegetarians out there. Your options are pretty much limited to veggie burritos, veggie fajitas or cheese enchiladas. The tacos are all meat-based and the tamales and the refried beans have lard. As such, if you want beans, be sure to order the pinto beans. I got a veggie burrito which was fine, but the red sauce on top had a weird pumpkin-spice-like flavor which I was not a fan of. All in all, unless this is your only option, I wouldn't bother coming here. Drive a little further down and get Jalapenos instead.

Yummy margarita and good service but the food was ok. Actually, I didn't like anything on my plate. I had the beef hard taco and chicken tamale with rice and beans. It was shredded beef when I was expecting steak cubes or even ground beef but nope. The meat was kind of salty. The tamale had too much corn and too little chicken. The corn crumbled and the lack of meat made the tamale flavorless. The rice and beans looked unappetizing and barely made it to my belly. My bf's beef tostada looked just like my taco, same ingredients just in a different form. He didn't like it very much. They also ran out of guava magaritas which I wanted to try because it's different. I ordered the hot pink looking strawberry margarita and it ended up tasting pretty good. I liked the free salsa, but the chips were pretty greasy. My search for a good taco tuesday continues.

I've been eating at Super Mex for like 20 years, but mostly in the Sunset Beach and Long Beach locations and those are both great. I've never eaten at the one in Irvine only because I didn't realize there was one. They've always had awesome chips and salsa good beer prices and delicious beans!! I'm looking forward to hitting up the Irvine location!

Not impressed with their food. For a $9 burrito, I'd rather go else where. I ordered the Super Mex Asada burrito and it was not that good. Not much meat and it was salty. Their front staff was not very friendly either...

Gringos should stop setting up Mexican restaurant chains. This goes for Taco Surf as well. The food is ultra bland and they do that receipt trick where they don't show you what you ordered so they can "accidentally" sneak in a soda that you didn't order. I bet that little trick adds 10% more a year to their bottom line.

Let's face it, there's really no good Mexican food places to eat in Irvine, but this Super Mex is pretty decent. The service could use some work since I always feel like I'm waiting 15-20 min for my food and another 15-20 min waiting for my check. Not the best option for lunch. I wish they up'd their quality and service then I'd definitely come here more often. Until then, I guess I'll settle for their not so fresh plates or head over to Santa Ana for some real Mexican food.

I love this place!!!...now that that's out of the way, I can get to the actual review. Ha! This restaurant is located in a strip mall area located on the southeast corner of the Culver/Walnut intersection. It's located right next to one of my other favorite places to grab a nibble...Cold Stone Creamery! The restaurant itself has a nice ambience...typical of what you'd expect to find find for a small mexican eatery. The staff are all extremely nice, and the food is always amazing! I'd really like to give them 5 stars, but the fact that they close at 9 pm kills it. I often work late, and would like to be able to enjoy a real meal, as opposed to having to resort to fast food. I guess this is one of the downsides to Irvine in general...everything closes too early! All in all, I recommend that you stop by, order a Cadillac margarita, and give your taste buds a treat!

Asked for a jalapeño margarita waitress said they don't serve those. I said fine and ordered a beer. Manager came by and explained they dont have a jalapeño margarita. I restated I had one prior and enjoyed it. He told me this is a franchise and we only go off the menu. He finally realized they had the ability to make the drink but at that point I was over it. I may have ordered a couple of drinks and dinner If service and manager wasn't subpar. Will not come back.

While I don't find the food so fantastic, it hits-the-spot and satisfies my craving for fairly-quick (step above fast-food) and casual Mexican food. The atmosphere is pleasant (except, I don't care to be seated in the back next to the entrance into the kitchen or bathroom), cozy, and sit-down-restaurant-casual, making for a festive outing. The margaritas are inconsistent -- sometimes good, sometimes strong, sometimes bland. While I'm not a fruity-drink type, I was eager to have someone taste their when-I've-had-them-sweet-fruity-and-smoothie-like mango margaritas; however, when served, they tasted so strong of tequila. Disappointing. When I'd ordered a mango vodka and soda, I was served mango juice (with, I think, some vodka added). Service, for the most part, has been pretty friendly. I do find their take-out family meal quite the deal at $15.99, offering a generous (1 pound) of carnitas, beans, Mexican rice, large-tortilla-size chips, and their tasty salsa!

I've been eating in and taking out from Super Mex for several years now. I have an online account and they occasionally send me email offers. Several months ago, we went because we got a coupon for a free combo meal for AC's birthday. We had a nice meal, which was completely and utterly ruined by the establishment's failure to honor the coupon. They said that I didn't order a combo so we could not take advantage of the buy one get one free deal. I can understand that they need to make money, but my meal was actually cheaper than the combo - in other words, we were actually asking for less free food than the coupon entitled us to. We didn't return for several months, but some friends recently visited and insisted on going to Super Mex. While our company and food were good on this visit (the beef machaca was quite tasty), the service was extremely slow. When you have families with kids, quick service is critical, and waiting 15-20 minutes just to order is too long. Sorry Super Mex, I'm going to have to find another local Mexican place.

Been to two places called Supermex now, and I don't know if they are a chain or franchised, but they seem pretty consistent, so I'm sold either way. The big huge chips are great beforehand, and the super burrito is pretty awesome. Plus, it's in a relaxed cantina style setting, so I don't have to feel like a d-bag walking in with flip flops on.

Went to lunch with my friend and her five coworkers here last week. We arrived around 12 and there was barely anybody here. They seated us on the patio and turned the heaters on for us since it was kind of cold that day. Chips and salsa were brought out immediately. They don't give you "chips" here, they give you whole fried tortillas. I personally like chips better, especially when I am sharing with a bunch of people I don't really know and we are all touching and breaking pieces off. I am not really paranoid about germs, but you never know how other people feel. I just think this is a bad idea. Other than that, the chips and salsa were tasty. We all ordered. The food was brought out quickly. All of our orders were correct and the waitress didn't hesitate to bring us other items - more salsa, extra sour cream, etc... The food was alright. I ordered a two enchilada combo plate, one beef, one chicken. I liked the beef better, the flavor of the chicken wasn't the best. The rice and beans were average, the rice was a bit dry for my taste. We decided to split the bill up evenly between the seven of us, and it came to $11 for each person, including tax and tip. Not a bad deal. Before we left the waitress refilled our drinks in to go cups so we could take the drinks with us. That was nice of her. Average Mexican food, seems like a good place for a quick lunch on a work day, not sure I would go out of my way to come here for dinner.

Ugh! Went here again with our family. I don't plan to return. We had a great server but the food took forever coming out of the kitchen. My cousin asked for no guacamole on her taco salad and it had a huge pile on it! I had a dinner salad which was pretty much all the taco ingredients on a plate. Also ordered a chicken quesadilla which was gross. The chicken was overly moist and made the tortilla soggy. Still no paper towels in the bathroom. I think maybe there is a sewage problem? Smells awful when you walk in. The ladies room has had its floor dug up and there is plywood covering it. Best thing about this visit was the guava margarita!

This place has the worst service in the world. I have never been more unsatisfied. I went here for dinner and we waited so long our food was cold. Then today I decided to give them another chance and went at 5:00. I thought since they weren't busy the service would be better. Nope. I was wrong. If u plan on wasting an hour of your time waiting, by all means go here!

I had a horrible experience here. My friends and I had about 40 minutes to eat and the food took the whole 40 minutes to come out. So, we had to take our food to go. We should have NOT tipped this guy, because my order came out totally wrong. I asked for a burrito but I got plain rice and chicken in a to go box. WTF?? I paid 8 bucks for this crap. Never coming back.

Been going here for 30+ yrs. The Irvine location has gone way downhill since the additional and the mousy brunette manager. Food service quality everything has gone downhill. Tonight she took our order never saw her again never saw our food for another 45 minutes. Let me add it was not busy. The owners seriously need to take note and get somebody in there that knows how to run a business old-school like they used to

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
