Best dim sum restaurant around, hands down. However, best dim sum around still = 3.25 stars compared to other food options around. This is a food type with limited maximum appeal.

This is probably the most eaten place by my family. Their lobsters are pretty darn good and their almond milk with crust on top thing is buy one get one free (dessert) you would be a fool not to try it. We usually get the whole chicken, some fish, lobster and mongolian beef. Their prices are decent especially for a family. However, the wait sucks if you are here on a weekend. Best time to go is probably weekday dinner time. Make sure you get the small lobsters! I honestly have being here for over 50 times and that is pretty crazy.

Usually we go eat Dim sum in Garden Grove area, but decided to try this place since it's close to our house. This place doesn't have enough dim sum carts and service is extremely slow. Went at 11am on Sunday and they didn't have any sui mai. How does a dim sum place not have the the most popular dim sum dish?! The food was not good and we left after awhile even though we weren't full because service was just too slow. Next time we crave Dim sum we will just make the drive down to Garden Grove area.

Yesterday, I went here with family for dim sum. The food was good, but there was a few problems communicating. The servers serving the dim sum didn't understand or speak any English. One person in my party tried to ask what was inside a certain dumpling and never got an answer. We had to cut it open, see for ourselves and found out it was shrimp. That is not good. What if someone at our table was allergic to shrimp? Also, the same person in my party wanted to order duck. Several times he asked the person serving the dim sum what kind of meat was on a plate in the cart. She didn't understand and put the plate on our table. A plate we didn't order, but was just asking about. Finally, she understood and got the duck from the kitchen. One of my pork and shrimp shu mais had a bone in it. I am pretty sure shu mais should never have bones in them. Luckily, I bit into to it and found it, but if I didn't, I could've choked on it. Then, the bone slipped from my hand and fell into my water. I had to flagged down a helper. I asked if he can give me another water. He asked if I just want a refill. I told him no, I want another cup. He took the clear cup and looked at it for at least a minute, put it back on the table and got me another cup with water. He never took the cup away! Why didn't he? Why would I want a cup I couldn't use anymore with a bone in it on my table? Another person in my party ordered garlic pea shoots which was very good, but a little salty. Also, it was hard to get a waiter when we wanted them to order something other than dim sum or ask a question. They never really came around. It took a while to flag down a waiter to pay our check even though it was less busy than when we first arrived. I have been here before for dim sum with a Taiwanese friend who speaks Mandarin. My friend made the previous experiences much better, because she can communicate with the servers, helpers and waiters. I would come here again, but I am not sure I would come here again for the dim sum, especially without my Taiwanese friend.

My family has been coming to China Garden for years, and we prefer it over the Sam Woo in the plaza across the street. Most of the time, we come for dimsum, but on our most recent visit, we came with some family friends for dinner. It was a special occasion, so we ordered the Peking Duck ("three eats" preparation; i.e. the skin + buns, soup, and lettuce wraps). We also ordered a ton of other delicious Cantonese dishes. China Garden's soups (the bao3 tang1) are always phenomenal. China Garden can get pretty popular and busy at times, so be prepared for a wait. Other than that, it's your run-of-the-mill Cantonese seafood restaurant, with live seafood tanks in the back and male servers (the women always seem to run the cashier and push the food trucks for dimsum). Service is decent too. We all finished off the meal with our own almond tea w/puff pastry (xing4 ren2 cha2). This is one of my favorite things to eat, and it's definitely worth the wait (make sure to order it at the beginning of your meal)! =)

On Christmas night we were looking for a good restaurant so we selected this one based on the fact it was packed. What a flop it was. The 3 of us ordered a rosted duck, sweet and sour beef and steamed vegetable. The duck was all bones and very little meat. The beef was chewee and the vegetables were simply tasteless. Sorry but I'm not going to be on their mailing list.

The roasted duck was - blah! The mixed vegetables was tasteless and boring and the sweet and sour beef was saucy with.....beef? NOT recommended.

The dim sum is good, I am not sure why the 3-star ratings. There are not super great dim sum options in Irvine. Capital seafood is OK but more expensive than this place. The MSG level is low here, bonus!

10pm-midnight LATE NIGHT SPECIALS = BOMB. Tired of BCD tofu soup everytime you got drunken munchies? China Garden has the best late night deals and the food is realllllllly good and definitely worth the price.

    1) Irvine prices make me sad :( 2) Luckily it was a friends treat :) 3) Only very basic, simple dim sum :( 4) The dishes taste pretty good :) 5) There's also a lunch special menu :)

This used to be the dim sum place to go to, but lately, the food quality has deteriorated. They no longer have dim sum service on weekdays. I came here with my in-laws and my mom for Mother's Day, and the food was not fresh. It's sad because I used to come here during our college days often, but no more. Their dinner foods are still okay. My hubby still orders food TO GO on the weekdays, especially their salted fish and chicken fried rice, their fish porridge (when he's sick), and the beef chow fun. They give large portions, which my hubby loves, because he has such a big appetite.

This place honestly has good food, but suffers from a lower rating only because it doesn't really fit into the whole facade of Orange County. If it was found in Long Beach or Downey, the place would do much better, but unfortunately, it's in a small plaza near Irvine Valley College. Still, whatever it lacks in flare and deco, it makes up for food. DECO: 3 stars The place is bigger than you think it would be and it shows. The seats are spread out, with white linen covering each round table. Tea cups and napkins are awaiting for use, while the dull hum of fluorescent lights loom overhead. Hand written menu items and specials are placed all over the walls, intermingling with the more professional posters. Add in a bare minimum of occupants in the restaurant and the place looks like a ghost town. Fine when bustling, but dying when slow. FOOD: 3 stars The food here is genuinely good, falling more towards traditional Chinese cooking than the Americanized, and bastardized, P.F. Cheng's or Pei Wei. As most Chinese restaurants, you don't wait long to receive the food you order and the food is steaming hot, straight from the wok. The salt & pepper pork chop is always a winner, as well as the walnut cashew shrimp. If you're eating with several people and several dishes, you'll eat well. However, if you're by yourself, you might want to order more than two dishes to satiate your appetite. Nothing is too spectacular, instead falling more to par of what you'd find in places like Monterey Park. However, being able to say the food is on par with MP, you'll know it won't disappoint sorely either. HOURS: 5 stars This is probably the best thing about this place. This restaurant doesn't close till midnight. That's right, MIDNIGHT! I can't think of any other place in or around Irvine that would close that late for Chinese food. I think China Garden is literally the only restaurant that would still be open at this time. If that doesn't seem good to you, you obviously hate life. Hater. CONCLUSION China Garden is very much a middle of the pack restaurant that just happens to both exceed and drop below the expectation of a restaurant in Irvine. Sure, the deco is whatever and the location is strange, but the food is satisfying and the hours are amazing. If you ever find yourself driving around late in Irvine wishing a restaurant was open to satiate your hunger, skip the Taco Bell and come here. It'll improve the quality of your life.

It's been 4 years since I last came here. I heard they had changed owners and that the food is good now, which is why I ended my boycott and decided to give them another try. Oh dear lord. I don't even know where to begin. The dim sum was just as bad as before, if not worse. Everything was tasteless except the seen juk guen (bean curd sheet rolls) which were actually better than the ones at Capital Seafood. Tripe was bland, chicken's feet were bland, lo bak go (radish cake) wasn't even pan fried properly, all mushy and cold. Some other dim sum also were cold. The 'ja leung' -- the Chinese crullers rolled with cheung fun noodles -- were cold and they did such a piss poor job of rolling I had to re-roll it before eating. Too much cheung fun noodles and they served it with hoisin sauce. When I asked where the real sauce is, the lady THEN went to the kitchen and got me some. Who the hell eats ja leung with hoisin sauce? It was so bad my son asked if we could go to Capital Seafood after we left. Thanks but no thanks -- guess owners may have changed, but the people cooking remain the same.

I don't understand a lot of the complaints for this place. Yes, the service is not the best. It's Asian. I've certainly seen worse. The food is pretty good. The price is slightly more expensive than some dim sum out there, but I think the quality is slightly better. Service: dim sum places get crowded during peak time. Dim sum is a popular custom. Some of the waitresses/ waiters don't speak English, well. They will ask us "do you want this?" We will say no. They will start to leave, hear us talk about something unrelated, and ask us if we changed our minds. They don't fill water unless you ask, but they are pretty good about refilling the tea. For an Asian place I would say service is average to above average. I wouldn't go during non-peak time for dim sum. Dim sum is best when the food is fresh, and piping. I don't care if it's cheaper and less crowded during happy hour. Food: the food here is good. We mainly got various shrimp and pork dishes like shumai. We also got the beef chow fun. The beef chow fun is on the oily side, in my opinion, but some members of the party (those who like American food over Asian food) thought it was the best part. We also got some fried donut wrapped in noodle skin? It was mediocre. Price: It's about $2-4 a plate, and each plate comes with about 4 pieces. The price is pretty standard-- maybe slightly on the pricy side. But I prefer the taste to many other dim sum places I've tried.

The best dim sum place you can find in Irvine. There are better dim sum places, but they are all in Diamond Bar area. The price here are fair, but the service SUCKS badly, like all other Chinese restaurants.

My boyfriend and my kids come here often for dim sum because it's close to our home. The dim sum here is average. They have just the basic dim sum selections. It's also better to eat here than having to drive all the way to Rowland Heights or Alhambra. We've had dinner here on a few occasions and it's decent. The wait can get pretty crazy since there's not many dim sum places in Irvine.

This restaurant has been here for ages!! I come here mostly for their Dim-Sum. It's either here or Capital Seafood. Menu prices are cheap; no complaints. However, the service is horrible, but you're there for the food, no the service. The dishes are tasty. I'll be coming back.

Dim sum for breakfast. They open at 10:30 now but worth the wait. Hot fresh Asian tapas at a low price. Service and food is great but the rotation of the dim sum carts are a little unorganized. After first cart we got 3 plates but then we waited like 10min till another cart came around. But overall it's still worth the wait. :)

This review is only for the dimsum served during lunch. This place has a pretty good selection if you go around noon! Don't go too late or the lady's pushing around the dimsum carts will start being a little pushy. I understand they want to sell out before closing, but isn't one "no thank you" enough? Pros: -large selection of dim sum -a lot of food for the price you pay I wouldn't say it's the best dim sum in irvine but for the selection they have I guess its good.

This restaurant serves authentic chinese food, so if you like PF Chang or Panda Express, you will be disappointed with this restaurant. Case in point: there is a review below where the reviewer claims that they are true fans of authentic chinese food and was offended that the restaurant did not have General Tsao's chicken and have not even heard of such a dish. Well, that should clue you in. It's an American dish! So, back to this restaurant. The quality is hit or miss, and if you know what to order, it can be a great meal. The chef knows how to cook seafood, so if you order anything from the tank it's a sure way to impress a client/VIP guests. Their tofu served with light soy sauce sauce is also cooked to perfection every time. For dim sum, it's crazy crowded on the weekend, so the quality is more stable. But if you come during weekdays, it can be bad (undercooked, oversteamed, overnighters?). The dimsum is not extraordinary, hence a star off. Personally, I haven't found a good dim sum place in orange county. My taste buds are spoiled by Vancouver, Canada's restaurants.

Not the best dim sum I ever had, but it does its job. Ordered 6 dim sum items and got the lobster noodle for $4.99. The noodles were lacking taste, but the lobster was good. Price point is pretty good. The meal came out to be under $30 bucks for two. It's nice that they open late with a late night menu the same as their lunch menu.

I had a hankering for steamed live shrimp and wasn't sure if it was still in season so I decided to stay local and try my luck at China Garden. Lucky me - I had some for dinner last night. ~$40 for two pounds (or $23 for one pound). These suckers were gigantic! Each and every one of them were sweet, meaty, and had a lot of tomales. I also tried the peking pork chops (large portion, but too much vinegar and salt; ~$15) and 3 meat delicacy (bbq pork, soy sauce chicken, duck, and something stringy and crunchy; ~$35). Like my other visits here, the flavors a-ok, but I can't help but notice the food comes out looking like it was reheated. Weird. Other important info: more expensive than comparable eateries, some entrée specials require minimum orders/hoops to jump through, shares parking lot with Taiko, A&J, Yogurtland, and Shik Do Rak.

This is my local go-to place when I'm craving dim sum. Decent service (typical of a Chinese restaurant - efficient, straight to the point, not everyone speaks English, no hospitality awards here but I'm not shopping for a new best friend anyway), ok ambience (banquet hall feel, no particular flare), but food is good. They have a good variety that comes out from the usual shu mai, to char sui in flaky puff pastry crust, to my favorite taro rolls (the one with the crunchy/flaky outside with the taro and meat inside). There are better places, and worse, but I judge by whether I would go back to a place and I def go here all the time. Other favs I've had (i.e., from the lunch menu) are honey walnut shrimp (YUM!!!) and the spicy eggplant. They also occasionally have had jelly fish in the dim sum menu, which if you're adventurous enough to try, is pretty good!

Whether for dinner or Dim Sum, this place always satisfies. I wouldn't say that this is the best place I've ever had Dim Sum, just the best place around here. These guys can get a little busy, especially on weekends, so I would brace myself for that scenario. The Dim Sum is pretty good overall. You have your shiu mai, shrimp dumpling, chicken feet. (Or "Phoenix Claw" if you want to get fancy) There are ladies pushing carts, people walking around with plates on a platter, and guys that that basically bus tables and bring you refills or whatever else you'd need. I think this place is definitely a step up from Sam Woo in terms of Dim Sum. As for dinner, I don't have any real complaints about this place either. Maybe I wasn't here for the feeling out process that my sister and parents went through, since they discovered this place first, but we already had some favorite dishes by the time I moved down here so I'm always pleased with dinner. We usually get the Salt and Pepper Spareribs, the Lobster Noodles, and vegetable dish that I don't know in English. Good place to get your grub on but I wouldn't say this place stands out in particular, at least on their dinner. I like it, that's all I can say. Place is a bit pricy, that'd probably be my only complaint. Otherwise, highly recommended for anyone looking for some good Asian grub.

This place was extremely disappointing. Went here for dinner this evening, my group were seated at a 4top. I didn't even notice the wait staff give us a beverage, no one greeted us, no one brought us drinks we sat there for 20 minutes, and we decided to order our food to go because they obviously didn't want to serve us. Even though we waited politely. When we decided to order to go, we had to wait another 10 minutes for some one even come around to take our order. Price here is pretty expensive, I ordered chicken with cashews, my friends ordered Kung pao chicken, and honey walnut prawns. When we finally arrived home, we discovered that our food quality was terribly disappointing. The Kung pao chicken was supposed to be the 2 chili rating for spice, and there was no spice at all. Honey walnut prawns were chewy and only the walnuts were really decent. My cashew chicken was severely lacking in flavor. Only the cashews were decent. Anyway I wouldn't go back here. Their fish tank of cichlids which was in the front of the restaurant looked dingy and nasty as well.

Just one of four dim sum places in Irvine, it probably ranks at 2 or 3, depending on who you speak with. Maybe it ties with Sam Woo. Advice: Don't be the first or early group of of people sit down for dim sum. The first batch of food is not as fresh --- maybe they're serving the previous days' dim sum leftovers. I don't know, but what I can say for sure is that this has happened to me at least three times in the past. Although Capital Seafood is not the best, compared with San Gabriel Valley standards, they're probably your best bet in the Irvine area --- in particular, at the Diamond Jamboree plaza. I will say, however, that the prices at China Garden are better than Capital Seafood, but you get what you pay for. But in terms of dinner value, I'd say that China Garden could possibly have the upper hand here. Dinner food at China Garden is comparable than Capital Seafood and it's cheaper too, especially when they have specials after 10:00 PM.

A good place to enjoy brunch on Sunday or Saturday. Great dim-sum! They have my favorite almond tea with baked crust on top. So tasteful that it's a must for me. Most of the dishes are very delicious. We usually spend about 26 dollars for two of us. But if you choose roast duck or other main dishes, the bill can easily surpass 30. But still, it's a great place to enjoy the traditional Guangdong dim-sum.

Been coming here for years.. Sad to say that what would have been a 5 star review nearly a year ago is now a 2 star review. The quality of food is definitely not what it used to be and the staff is even worse. I've been frequenting New Capital more these days, but decided to come here to avoid the rush of Diamond Jamboree.. Should have followed my initial thoughts. The last 2 times here have been quite disappointing and unenjoyable. This will be my last time for sure. Ordered the Chinese broccoli and it came out completely overcooked and soggy. I debated on whether to send it back as I rarely do this, but did because it was just not good. When asking our waiter Eric to change the dish he proceeded to tell me that "this is how we make it".. Really? You work at a Chinese restaurant and this is how your restaurant prepares this dish? He then told us we can take it as is or cancel it. Before I could answer him he takes the dish and throws it out. Wow, buddy.. Bad service is a pet peeve, but not being able to admit when a dish is clearly wrong is not acceptable. End rant!

Update. 5 stars in 2007. 3 stars in 2011. Came back and it was meh. Service is still the same - rude, but it's a Chinese restaurant so, yeah. The place was still the same shabby faded everything that I remember from years ago. Menu is the same. Food is not the same. Beef broccoli was half good, half bad. The broccoli was great and the sauce was too. Unfortunately, the beef was poor and the flavor was nothing more than soy sauce. Pretty disappointing. Chinese broccoli was good but over cooked. Mushy is gross. It's supposed to be super crunchy and the leaves should be firm. Nope. Mongolian beef was decent. Rice was dry. Too bad. Oh well. Will probably come back when I'm in the mood for shiny food but until then, look on the bright side - it's better than Sam Woo (and cheaper too).

Well, well.. I have been here about 4 times and that is already too many times. The only thing that is good about this place is their late night special/lunch special. I would not recommend this place for dimsum because: 1) expensive! Ok, maybe not in Irvine but for a min. of $2.60 a plate?! That is cray cray. 2) lack of variety in food. You have your shiu mai, ha gao, fung jao... and that's it. This restaurant is not really up to par in selecting a variety of dimsum dishes. :( 3) bad service. The waiters here are usually trying NOT to look at you and just ignores you, so please do not expect good service here. The good thing I have to say about this place is that they have good tea(?) here, haha and their lunch special/late night special starts about around $6.25~, which is not that bad! I probably would not choose this restaurant as my #1 choice. Ooh, another perk: they all speak Cantonese! You rarely find Cantonese people around in Irvine so I feel really excited when I find Cantonese people haha.

Before Sunday, I hadn't tried dim sum in Irvine since I moved here. None of it was well-rated, and I was up in the San Gabriel Valley some of the time anyway, so I never really had a reason to. Well, I'm a member of an Asian food meetup group, and they chose Irvine China Garden as their next spot, so... I had a great time at the meetup... socially. But I wouldn't come back for the food. It all was so similar in taste that I can't remember much of what we ordered (and we ordered a lot). There was a sausage I've only eaten as lap xuong in Vietnamese restaurants, stuffed in a bun like cha siu bao. No sauce, no flavor. There were har gow, clumsily wrapped, that fell apart easily. Those long rice noodles that they cut with scissors - I don't know the name, but they drowned it in soy. On the better side, something they called Chinese sushi that I'd never seen before, but was pretty good - shrimp wrapped in seaweed. The pork/chive dumplings had lots of chives and were well-made. At $14 per person for a big table, this is just plain not worth it. Who pays $14 for mediocre dim sum? Apparently all of Irvine, because the entire place was packed, with a line out the door and spilling onto the lawn by Jeffrey, the whole entire time we were there.

The restaurant closed at 12AM and they will ask you to LEAVE at 11:45 PM even you are not done eating and this is on numerous occasion. WORST SERVICE IN SOCAL. Nobody deserved to be treated like that. Food - Lots of MSG....

I've been coming here for quite some time, weekly almost, and their food is improving lately. After 10 PM, you can order out of a special menu, where the average price is below $10 a dish - best deal. Otherwise, they have weekly specials, such as 2 lobster for $19.99, Crab for $5.99 lbs, live red shrimps for $6.99 lbs... On a good night, you can catch a friendly waiter who would anything for you - great service. I will definitely come back and try their Dim Sum.

Price range: $3.25-$4.50 for dim sum items. Space: good for families and large groups. If you want dim sum in Irvine, I recommend Capital Seafood in Diamond Jamboree over this place. However, we came on a Saturday at 11am and there was no wait.. in fact, half the place was empty! I was pretty shocked because most dim sum places get packed out from the getgo. The place did start filling up around noon though and by the time we finished our meal there was a long wait. They have carts that go around and there was plenty of space between tables so it doesn't feel as cramped as Capital Seafood. As a parent with a baby, I was glad to see I could easily fit a stroller by my table without encroaching on others' space. The dim sum was alright - I felt like everything we got was lukewarm or on the cold side. It was oddly unsatisfying... and I left disappointed.

The service is so bad I will never go there again. A waiter almost fights with a customer and I never see such things in this country. I believe the waiter is from China, that explains why. The customer shows the waiter that a dish is not cooked. But the waiter has such bad attitude that he took the disk and back with OVER COOKED everything! Don't waste your money and time there.

The family and I were in the mood for dimsum yesterday morning and wanted to try out China Garden since it's so close to us. We arrived there around 12 and waited for about 10 minutes before we were seated since it was so busy. Immediately after we sat down, we had the dimsum offered to us. Their dimsum wasn't anything special, average at best. Their selection wasn't as large as other places and it didn't taste as good. Just wasn't that impressed by it all. I did notice that practically every table around us ordered the special lobster noodle dish. The total ended up being ~$30 for 3 of us, I think if you want good dimsum, there are better places than China Garden.

This place is the average Chinese restaurant, defined. The food is average, the service is average, and the prices are a little high but average since it's Irvine. I've come here for early lunches and dim sum and late lunches at 3 PM and late, late dinners at 10 PM after a long day at Disneyland. There's nothing standout to say plus I don't actually know the names of anything I've *ever* ordered here (my parents do the ordering) so I will just offer a few pearls of wisdom after many, many years of visiting this place. - I would highly recommend against coming here on a holiday. When I say holiday, I mean any day that gives one reason to celebrate. This includes all Asian holidays as well as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day... yeah. Any time I've driven by here on a "holiday," there is a crowd of people waiting outside. - The level of service increases exponentially as the number of customers decreases, as in they will refill your water glass before you ask and before it reaches the bottom. Crazy!! - I got seated at a table that was kinda boxed in once and it was really difficult/annoying to get the carts to come by. It was one of the tables near the windows facing out at Jeffrey. That was a sad, sad lunch.

Dinner was a okay, a bit pricy. Dim Sum wasn't that good, lack of variety and you ordered from a menu instead of choosing your food from a moving cart which is weird. You need to go to San Gabriel Valley are to get a real Dim Sum.

  • Jessie Q.

As I grew up in Rowland Heights and near Chinese food areas, the food in China garden is okay. But, for those who don't want to drive 30miles for dim sum or dinner, this is probably the best place for treating people out or even to just have a meal yourself. And I would also like to say that there may be a wait for dim sum in the morning although the nights are pretty empty. I did have a couple bad experiences there with the server and the dishes, but I suppose things happen. But having a whole bucket of salt poured into stir-fried vegetables can be very painful. We left the whole dish untouched. It was like salted preserved vegetables!

Approaching a girl: "Excuse me are you Chinese? Cause you're all that & dim sum!" Approaching this restaurant: I went with a church member to grab a quick lunch & get some work done. Note: not the greatest place to have a working meeting. You're constantly being interrupted by drive-by dimsum carts. Also, warning... if you're not Chinese... be ready to use alot of hand gestures, facial expressions, and opening & closing through every steal container... I used to eat dimsum in Monterey Park with my parents every Wednesday morning. That was our family meal. I really enjoyed that experience. That was my standard. Here... I wasn't seeing the dishes that I enjoyed from before. We ended up grabbing a couple of dishes we'd never tried... It ended up being Forrest Gump: "Life is like a dim sum cart... Ya never know what you're gonna get." Unfortunately for us... :( So the SUM of dimsum... It's not all DAT AND DIMSUM! or the sum is definitely dimming... Dah-Dung... Crash!

Can't go wrong with their 鹵水豆腐, steamed live shrimp and steamed red rock cod. Their 上湯菜苗was not bad either. People rave about their puff pastry almond milk, but do not get it. The almond milk taste like the store bought ones.

China Garden was busy today, is it because of the Chinese New Year? The wait was about 40 minutes for a party of 4. Quality of food seems to have slipped a notch today. Tea was bland and dim sum was salty. It is as good as it gets in Southern OC, unless you are willing to drive to Rowland Heights or Monterey Park. Price-wise, it is not the most expensive in OC but not inexpensive either. You get 10% off during the week.

I came here for dim sum. It's hard to find good Chinese food and dim sum in Irvine. Irvine has great Korean and Japanese food, but you normally have to travel further to get good Chinese and Vietnamese food. I didn't want to drive far and wanted to give China Garden a shot. I've had the dim sum at Sam Woo's restaurant so wanted to compare. China Garden was not great. I didn't think any of the dishes were really good in terms of dim sum. I enjoy dim sum and got the usual things like shui mai, har gow, chicken feet, spare ribs, turnip cake, and some others. None of these were really good. All ok, but not really good. I think some of the dough was too chewy, the chicken feet didn't have the right taste and color, the spare ribs were also a bit bland. It took awhile to get har gow that day too, they were out for a long time and I was pretty full by the time it came around. Prices are about what you would pay elsewhere for dim sum but I wasn't impressed by any of the taste or quality. I've had better in other cities and even Sam Woo's in Irvine was a little better than here.

My go-to Dimsum spot. Line gets long, so I recommend coming here early. They stop serving Dimsum at 3PM. I have no idea what the ladies who push the cart are saying. It's hard to communicate if you aren't Chinese. Try to get a menu so you show them the picture or the #, to have a better communication. Their lobster was bleh. Fried rice was bleh. I say stick to their Dimsum.

Would have to be the worse service I've every experienced ever!! Literally!!!! We were seated right away, a server set up our sets and removed extras that we're already at our table. No one ever came back to take a drink order! Even offer water!!! We had to tell a server we were ready to order and he entire time we ate no one ever came over to see if we needed anything we had to keep calling for help! I felt as if no one wanted to wait on us because we weren't "Chinese"? I will never return here as good as he food came out to be! I'd rather take my money some where else!! RUDE!!!!

Best 2nd best dumplings I've ever had I like to that they come around with a cart and the lobster and fish tanks were really cool too.

Got steamed fresh fish and veggie for dinner. It was decent. Funny when I showed my dad the steamed fish picture, my dad thought I didn't have enough money so I had to order steamed fish head instead of the whole fish. Well, the red cod did have a big head. The head was almost more than half of the fish. Lol! The pea sprout with crab sauce was delicious. Beware that you don't get to order a 'special' price dish unless you ordered at least three regular priced dishes.

Came for dim sum on Sunday lunch. Waited for about 25 minutes which was to be expected on weekends. But when we got into the restaurant, there was almost nothing left to eat! The carts had the same 5 items on them and didn't bring out anything new. We kept asking for certain items and they kept saying later. The food was fine and we enjoyed what we ate. But they were missing many basic items! Very disappointed.

Disgusting place! We found a large piece of PLASTIC in the beef soup while eating(see photos), which implies the restaurant's bad sanitary conditions. However, the waiter refused to apologize, and treated us with an extremely bad attitude. From their conversations, it seems that such problems (plastic or other stuff in a dish) occur very often. We hope everyone can notice this bad sanitary condition before they eat there!

Blah what can you say... it's an institution. The dim sum is old school and good. The service is also old school and lacking ;) This review is only for the dim sum. I love their egg custard dessert. The shumai is tasty and juicy. The hargow is ok. The rice noodle sheet with shrimp is decent. The trunip cake was good too. They have a good selection dim sum. Nothing fancy but will hit the spot if you're craving and don't want to go all the way to SGV. There's a wait... and if you get seated in one of the side rooms you'll probably have a hard time getting food as the carts will usually sell out before they get into the rooms, if they remember to go into it. But don't hesitate to flag down a waiter/waitress and ask them to bring something you're looking for. They probably won't stop to ask, so take the initiative, it's just how it works. Is it better than than Capital near by?.... hard to say over all, but I will note this: 1. China Garden's egg custard dessert is waaaay better than Capital. 2. Capital's hargow is better than China Garden.

Got here 11am right when they opened so all the dimsum dishes were nice and hot! All the dimsum dishes were mediocre. We also ordered the lobster with noodles, watered down hardly any flavor. Nothing too exciting here. For an Irvine location though, the dim sum is very inexpensive. We got shu mai, bbq pork buns, Shanghai steamed dumplings, 2 shrimp noodles, tripe, and lobster noodles for 2 people and it was only $40. Bill came to a surprise cause we didn't know the lobster during lunch was only $10!

Its Two Star Tuesday again!!! For a long time, I thought that China Garden was the best dim sum place in the area. However, since that time newer places like Capital Seafood, and S.W. Seafood have come into the forefront. I came here for Easter Sunday w/ 5 other family members. The first thing I noticed was there wasn't much of a line like before. The basics came out first: Ha gow; shu mai; lo mai gai; shrimp roll; pai gut. All of those items were OK. In addition, there were scallop dumplings, and we were able to order chow fun off the menu: 3 Stars. However, there were no deli/specialty type items like char siu, roast pork or duck: 2 Stars. Lastly, the mango jello came in plastic containers indicating they were bought elsewhere: 2 Stars. The service was non-existent. Our table didn't have enough napkins, and we had to ask for water and refills. In addition, when I asked for char siu the waiter looked at me like I was crazy. Lastly, after the first rush of carts, the dessert cart took foreeeeever to arrive: 2 Stars. The ambiance was old before, but now its ancient. The bathrooms were crazy old: 2 Stars. After this recent experience, I won't be rushing to come back soon. There are far too many places w/ better variety, service and ambiance.

This place has been around for many years. It was one of the more popular dimsum places in Irvine until all the new restaurants started popping up everywhere. The wait on weekends used to be absurd! Tons of people sitting on the lawn in front of the restaurant waiting to be called in! Since then this place has fallen behind in ever aspect. The food is just average. Terrible service and pretty outdated looking restaurant. We just had out family Christmas dinner there last night. We had one of the private rooms, it almost felt like I was eating in a storage room. The overly used CF lights gives you the feel of an office. The outdated tv sits in the corner next to a flat screen. Is it really that difficult to get rid of the old tv? Such an eye sore. We had quite a few dishes and most were pretty tasty but I bet they use tons of MSG because I woke up with swollen fingers and a headache! This place needs to get a major revamp to compete with all the newer Chinese restaurants in Irvine otherwise it may not last. Most of the waiters have been there forever and they all have such nasty attitude! I know that's almost expected at a Chinese restaurant but it's time for a change!

I have to say, the food and service has declined over the years. unfortunately, this go to restaurant for me has not stepped up its game. Given the many options in Irvine as well as many new restaurants that have entered the scene, you would have thought the food would have maintained a high level.

Came here for some quick dinner. Thought it is one of those American Chinese food place. Boy, I was wrong. It is one of those sit down, dine in, family traditional restaurant. We, my husband and I, ordered Cod, basil in wine sauce and Half chicken in soy sauce. They are both wonderful taste. We were both in a rush, so we didn't order any dim sum, xiao lung bao and lo bai gao. Well, have to wait for next time. We actually didn't wait long for the entree to come out. 15 minutes top. I have to say, service is as a traditional Chinese restaurant you will get, which no surprises. Overall, love the food in this restaurant.

Rather disappointed. I had the beef chow fun "dry" & it was bland. I thought for as long as this place has been here that there had to be a reason. But then again maybe I should have came from the dimsum instead. Also, why do they keep it butt ass cold in there? I was freezing!!

This place was one of the most favorite, reasonble dim sum place i usually go on Sundays. However, i realized the price has gone up. We ordered 2 cha shu, 2 ha gow, 1egg custard and 2steam dumplings cost us $30. I was quite disappointed. The food was delicious, but getting pricey.

4 star for dimsum. Best dimsum on weekends in Irvine. Wait may be crazy long (over an hour) if you get there around noon so try to arrive by 11am. Flavors are delicious and their hot sauce is number one. Less greasy compared to.Capital Seafood and tasted better. Drink lots of water with the dimsum and top it off with some grease fighting hot black tea afterwards.

I would give this restaurant 3-star rating for its food. Its shumai and chicken feet are my favorites every time I come here for dim sum; there is no waiting if you get there at 11:00 A.M.,but unfortunately, I would give this restaurant zero-star rating for its service. The hostess (the Chinese girl with her funny blond hair and a black string tie) is very, very rude. I don't know if she is deaf or dumb, but she never said a word to me when I said, 'Thank you.' This has happened to my group several times. We may drive a few extra miles to the Irvine Spectrum's Capitol Seafood in the future. Where's the owner? Fire this rude woman to save your business! KNg

The food quality is okay now, but the price is getting high now. We had 7 small dishes today and around $35.00 already. The egg tart is decent, but it is getting much smaller than before. The service is okay for Chinese restaurant. The overall experience is okay.

How do you rate a restaurant where the staff STEALS cash from your wallet in your purse? There's CCTV record to prove his action, yet the management told us not to turn him in to authority. Not only they will not fire him, they are going to "reduce" his hours. Really?! We had a large group gathering in their VIP room and one of our ladies placed her purse on the counter in the room. While we were busy socializing, a waiter comes in with a large serving dish and does his food prep on the counter. This is where he reaches in to her purse, takes the wallet out and holds it underneath the plate as he walks out. The next time he came in, he held the wallet underneath another dish, placed the dish on the counter and puts the wallet back into the purse with all her cash inside emptied out. What a smooth operation!!! The waiter denied his wrong doing until his management told him we have seen the surveillance record and will turn him in to authority. Our friend also retained a copy with her phone. This doesn't seem like it's the first time China Garden has stolen cash from its customers . This was a "senior" wait staff of the restaurant that has been working there for many years.

This place is the closest Chinese restaurant to what I experienced growing up in Rowland Heights and Alhambra. The dim sum here still has the rolling carts, it's busy, and the prices are reasonable. I hate going to Capital Seafood for dim sum because you pay $5 for a basic dish that is less than $2 in the 626 where it tastes better too! I also love their lunch and late night food offerings. Nothing is better than having an option for your late night Chinese cravings. As a whole, it is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Irvine.

This is by far the best Chinese food/Dim sum in Orange County. I don't understand why people give therm such a bad review, but this is a good place to eat. I am not Asian, but I can tell you that if I am eating at an ethnic restaurant, first thing I look for is natives. This restaurant is always full, the food is delicious (unless you are used to Panda Express, which is not a typical Chinese food) and the service is fast. Yes, the restaurant is a little outdated but I prefer the food from any other restaurant that has no taste whatsoever.

Not wanting to drive up to the SGV this morning, we settled for dim sum in Irvine. We haven't been to Irvine China Garden in quite a while so we decided to give it a try. At around 11AM on a Saturday morning, this place was bustling. I think we just took the last small table for two so we were lucky that we didn't have to wait. Halfway through our meal I saw that the crowd outside waiting for tables has built up considerably. Tip: On weekends, come before 11AM to avoid a long wait. The basic staples like siu mai, bean curb rolls, and pork spareribs were quite tasty, but heavy on MSG. The spareribs were barely warm, and not hot. The beef rice noodle was just barely ok. The rice noodle was thin and smooth but the filling was pretty bad. The "beef" was like a chewy paste and it didn't even taste fresh. There were some high points though. The steamed taro cake was really good and I highly recommend it. The tofu was good and the flavor was fresh and natural. The stuffed mushrooms were also very good. I know many people love carts, but I have never been a fan of carts just because sometimes you have to wait endlessly for them to come around. That was the case here today. After our first round of a few dishes, we waited for a long time - maybe 15 minutes - before the carts came around again. I think the all the major steamed dumplings were loaded on 2 main carts and they moved rather slowly and the wait could be long. This restaurant could certainly use more carts on weekends. In a nutshell: Food is good by Irvine's standard, while some dishes are better than others. MSG level is high. Service and prices are on par with similar Chinese dim sum restaurants in the area. A cool place to return for more dim sum whenever we are not in the mood of hitting the freeway.

Good solid dim sum. At times I think dim sum is a little pricey. Usually we each end up spending $20 each for our meal, after tax and tip, and for lunch, kinda steep! But I suppose we do get to take a couple of items home. The ladies with the carts, of course don't speak a lick of English-- but pointing will do. I like going with my Chinese girlfriend because she does all the work for me! I just sit back and gobble up the food. I wish I knew the name of the dishes, unfortunately I don't. I know that the spare rib steamed thing was awful. All fat! I love their congee, but I'm a congee lover, so I'm easy in that area. Shrimp dumplings and noodles are always loaded, so you really do get your monies worth. Not the nicest and cleanest restaurant so if you're looking for more la di da, don't come here. This place reminds me of places you find in GG or Westminster, certainly not Irvine. In Irvine, you find places like Capital--- which is in tip top shape. Or in other words, totally westernized! But hey, I'm not complaining. I'm so a fan! They take a while with the bill, which always frustrates me because they seem oblivious of the power hour lunch.

It's not often that I give a restaurant 2 stars, but usually when I do, it's a restaurant that I'm either giving the benefit of the doubt or I'm desperate. This time, I was both. One of the few Chinese restaurants in irvine open late, so that's probably why I gave it an extra star. Unfortunately, the food, at least from the late night menu isn't quite extraordinary, in fact far from it. Salt and pepper pork chop is one of my favorite dishes and honestly I wasn't expecting much. So I guess I wasn't too disappointed. It had a nice salty fried flavor and somewhat crispy. There was no spices in there like there usually is. The meat was quite fatty and chewy. And it honestly could have been crispier. The scrambled beef over egg was actually extremely disappointing. Another one of my most favorite dishes, I remember ordering this dish from the regular menu before, and it was much better. The essence and tradition of this dish is that the egg is very lightly cooked where it is still a bit runny and more like a sauce. In fact, when I ordered this as a dish from their regular menu, it was like this. I tried clarifying with the waiter that it was like this... He seemed to understand but I guess he didn't. But then I realized these dishes aren't served with rice... So how could they make it runny. On a side note a bowl of rice is a $1. As I expected... the egg was scrambled and thoroughly cooked. Darn. To add to the disappointment, some of the meat was just so chewy that I would have to swallow it to have it go down. So I spit it out. For the price the late night menu would've been great if the quality was better. But now that I think about it, Sam woo serves the same scrambled egg over beef dish, cooked as it should be and served over rice for the same price if not cheaper. China garden, you may be making good business with your late night menu already, but I think you have the potential to be the go-to Chinese (Cantonese style) restaurant for late night Irvine treats. Maintain your quality and price through the night and I think you would have an excellent fan base and frequent late night customers. But I guess, only if you want to....

If you are in Irvine and need your dim sum fixins this place is just OK. Food is decent. Lobster is pretty tasty here salt and pepper style. The dim sum carts take a while to get around and we ended up having to have one of the servers run and and grab our items for us since we have been waiting for so long and the cart was on the OTHER SIDE of the restaurant. Normal wait time, 15-30 minutes.

  • Andrew L.

Pros and Cons Pros. 1. Good Food 2. Cheaper than Capital cons 1.Slower Service Ive been coming here for several years before Capital opened. They have a wide selection of dim sum dishes as well as regular dishes as well. The shrimp dishes are good as well as their tofu, There are a lot of tables in the restaurant but the wait its still long at times. Also, the service is subpar and the dishes are a tad pricey,

I can't help it, I like this place. I have fond memories of coming here for the late night menu all through my college years. I order food for takeout mostly these days, and my usual orders include things like Peking Duck, Roast Duck, Baby Bok Choy , Spinach or Pea Greens with Garlic, BBQ Pork, Beef Chow Fun Dry Style, Porridge with Pork and Preserved Egg, and other common things. The prices are reasonable and the food tastes good enough. I prefer the food here to Capitol or Sam Woo most of the time, so four stars for the food. The service varies...I think that's the case with nearly every restaurant I've been to more than a couple times though. When it's slower, the service is really fast and I am never wanting for anything. When it is packed, it takes some time (a lot of time), and sometimes it really feels like forever. Pair that with the usual treatment by any good Chinese restaurant staff (and many of them have been here for well over a decade, and are extremely good at their jobs) and you can understand why some people may be put off by the style of service. Some of you really have no idea what Chinese food is. Don't ever order Orange Chicken...that's on the menu for the westernized palate. "Duck Sauce" is something you'll only find at Chinese-American food counters that don't serve actual Chinese cuisine. And they won't have "General Tso's Chicken" because that is a made up dish that no Chinese person who values their relationship with their ancestors will ever eat. It's like going to a great authentic Mexican restaurant and complaining that there isn't sour cream and cheese hurled over everything like the fires of Mt. Vesuvius over Pompeii.

One of our go-to places for dim sum or Chinese food in Irvine. It isn't really the best but it'll do. They have the roving carts which I still appreciate. I'm old school like that and it just makes the dim sum experience more authentic. You'll just have to be patient for the cart to reach your table hoping that it still carries your favorite dishes. Speaking of favorites, here's what I order when I'm here: A LA CARTE: French pepper beef Honey walnut shrimp Yang Chow fried rice DIM SUM: Pork Shiumai Xiao Long Bao Shrimp Noodle Pork spareribs Fried seaweed roll with shrimp They also have chicken feet which the hubby orders all the time. Just not my thing...I don't have feet fettish. Haha! For dessert, I like to get their sweet tofu with ginger syrup but they always run out of it. Uggh! Prepare to wait for a table on weekends. Dim sum is only until 3pm. However, this is one of the few restaurants in Irvine that closes late. China Garden has served its purpose of feeding my hungry family when everything but Denny's is closed. Oh and service is meh. Not terrible but not the best either. You know what I mean.

We've been going there for years, but today was the worst customer service by the dim sum cart ladies ever. I know not to expect a high level of service, but today was ridiculous. We even flagged the lady down after she passed by and she started over and then told me LATER! And left! I just wanted some food. Just rude! And the food wasn't even as good as before either!

Mm...hit or miss. Came back here at around 1:30pm with boyfriend's mom and it was my suggestion. Honestly, embarrassing as it was horrible the day I came. Slow service (which is OK considering its an asian restaurant), but food was terrible, and not more selections :(

    (3)
  • Sam B.

I am so surprised that China Garden only has 3 stars! There is ALWAYS a horde of people waiting on the lawn, and on a 'non' busy weekend, it usually is a 30 minute wait. The dim sum is certainly the best in the area, so much so that even when I moved to 45 minutes away, I still make the trek on weekends. I honestly don't think the service is as bad as everyone says. Maybe I am just lenient on them because it's always so crowded, I can't imagine getting star studded treatment. Overall, the food outweighs the "bad" service AND the terrible wait times. Five stars ALL THE WAY

    (5)
  • Sally K.

The wait was not long. The service was poor. I had a party of 6, almost every single dim sum cart skipped my table when strolling around. Only 4 carts actually served us. When we asked for the xiu mai we were told it was not ready. So we waited 20 minutes to be told the same thing. After just sitting there we decided to leave. Asked for our bill and told them no carts were coming to our table and the gentleman that gave us our bill did not seem to care. This is bad customer for business. His tone of voice was rude as well. I will not be coming here again nor will I refer anyone I know to eat there. When you go to eat dim sum I know you can expect service to not be great but this was ridiculous.

  • Jan B.

What a rip off this place is! They give you one teapot and charge you per person for the tea. That's like ordering a bottle of wine or a plate of food, but charging you however many people share it. How does that even make sense?!

    (1)
  • Diana Y.

Solid 3 stars for dim sum. I wouldn't say China Garden is the best, but they don't have a crazy wait and a decently priced. I used to come here all the time when they first opened for their lunch specials because they had good prices and I liked several of their offering. Now it's just dim sum and they do a decent dim sum. Best dish here is probably their Jook/Congee with preserved egg and pork. It tastes like they've been cooking that thing in the back for hours and all the flavors have seeped into the porridge. Rest of the usual dim sum items are OK, nothing extraordinary. I would suggest stay away from anything too fancy dim sum wise because they usually have been around the restaurant a few times trying to get sold and unless you see it coming out of the kitchen fresh, I'd steer clear. Service is the usual Asian restaurant service which is minimal. Make sure to come for dim sum before the tail end because I did that once and ended up with the old dried out dishes for everything.

Eager for Dim Sum on a Sunday morning, we arrived right when they opened at 10am. There was one other table seated but the restaurant quickly filled up within the hour. 3-4 different food carts served our table once we sat down and we had all of our food items within a couple minutes. We ordered our usual dim sum fixings: Shrimp Hargow (dumplings), Pork Spare Ribs, Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings), Rice Noodle Rolls w/ Shrimp, Turnip Cake, Glutinous Rice Dumplings (crispy fried meat dumplings), and Porridge. s3-media2.ak.yelpcdn.com… s3-media1.ak.yelpcdn.com… s3-media4.ak.yelpcdn.com… s3-media3.ak.yelpcdn.com… This was my first time ordering porridge during dim sum hours. The rice in the porridge had a texture similar to grits and was cooked with pork-- really good when u mix in a little soy sauce. I really liked the Glutinous Rice Dumplings! So light and crispy on the outside, and chewy & savory on the inside. The Xiao Long Bao here were alright, but I'm always excited when restaurants serve these! There didn't seem to have as huge variety of food items but the prices weren't bad, service was good, and we didn't have to wait (try to come before 10:30am). I heard this place had late night deals.. must try!

This review is for Dim Sum only! I usually go on Sundays which is the perfect day for Dim Sum. Get there by 10:30am to avoid the line! I always bring a Chinese-speaking friend to expedite the process since he knows my favorite dishes. My favorites: Chinese broccoli, Steamed and Baked BBQ Pork Buns, Shrimp Har Gow, Pork Shiu Mai, Chive Dumpling, Sticky Rice, Shrimp in Rice Noodle, and Egg Tarts (sooo good when they are hot!). Steal the egg tarts first since they are always out by the time you want dessert! Service is always spotty but my friend is a regular here so we get treated pretty well. If you come in a big group, its a pain since they don't take reservations and your entire party has to be present to be seated. Other than that, good dim sum for Irvine. I had better elsewhere but for Irvine, there's only here or Capital Seafood. This rating is based on dim sum available in Irvine, not based on all dim sum in Orange and LA county.

This restaurant seriously lacks in Basic hygiene. Quality of the food was horrible, service too. If you know good food you wouldn't even be on this page actually so I'll cut it short. Got dragged in by some co workers. Had to get a gastric cleansing afterwards.

Absolutely horrible experience. Yes they get busy, yes, the dim sum is OK. Yes, it is a Chinese restaurant. But even then, don't deserve more than one star. If you do ever go here, Don't ever let them sit you in the side room. You will receive little or no service at all. After awhile we just went to the busboy station to get whatever we needed. This rating will not matter to them, they always pack it up and don't care about their customers.

Not bad, but nothing special and I've definitely had better! Irvine China Garden is your typical Chinese restaurant with a huge hall and average food. - Semi-friendly servers. - Slightly overpriced. - Food is decent, but nothing to write home about.

Judge a dim sum place by its har gow and you will find China Garden lacking. The outer layer's far too thick. Everything is pretty forgettable--it's not cheap, it's not lacking in lines, the service isn't superb, not everyone speaks Cantonese...there are better choices. The only dish my HK-born gf and I really enjoyed was the pan-fried pork dumpling with some greens in it.

Not sure if the bad reviews are for dinner but lunch dim sum is pretty good. Chicken feet is good. Just the right amount of saltiness and the tendon/skins falls right off the bone as it should. Su mai (excuse the spelling pls) is very good. Not too much skin and the pork is soft and flavorful. Shrimp wrapped in the rice wrap thing with soy sauce on top is excellent. The skin is thin and soft, not doughy like some other places. Shrimp is nice and plump. Service, in my experience, is pretty good. All those ladies look stiff and uncaring but if you joke with them they are actually very nice. Maybe it's because I come here at least twice a month. Price is downright cheap for what you get Beats any other dim sum around. Please let me know if there is better dim sum as I am still searching. And Pls don't talk about the Vietnamese dim sum in the Westminster area - all those are Crap.

I am surprised on ly 3 stars on Yelp! Not bad dim sum!! Try their lobster house special, very good. The line is bad in the mornings on weekends, but that is like any dim sum, I guess. Service could be nicer but this is dim sum place. They don't really care and people do not go there for the environment. Selection decent. I think it is tied with Sam Woo. Sam Woo a bit nicer with some special deals for much better quarlity larger lunch plates. But I like the dim sum here too and a little less expensive than Sam Woo.

ONE STAR because OF THE MOST RUDE SERVICE EVER. Came with a really large group of people (15ish) and we were ALL paying customers (about $10-$15 each in the end). Our tables could never get carts to come around to give us food, when we asked the waiters they said they would try to get the carts to come by and when 10 more minutes have passed and there were none, we asked the manager if we could just order food and he tells us, "No, you cannot order food, YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT." (This isn't true since on week days all you do is order from the menu for dim sum, he just didn't like us at all). Alright, I understand, patience. We wait for 10 more minutes, no carts. We ask a few more waiters, but one of them decides to tell the manager again and he gets mad at us for asking. Seriously? How rude. He basically yells at us as if we were 6 years old and tells us to be patient again. My friend who speaks Chinese tries to talk to him in Chinese, but then he yells at her in Chinese for us to be "patient kids". We got our food eventually, but were probably at the restaurant for an hour longer than we wanted to just waiting for our food to slowly, slowly come. Ugh, no respect for this guy and establishment. If I ever come back, I hope he's not going to be there and only encounter the nice Hispanic guys there! I would gladly tip them. Otherwise, the food was alright the service just sucked enough for me to not want to come back for a while.

I went in for dim sum and food is way too salty. I asked for a fork and it took 3 person and 30 mins to finally get me one fork. Service is horrible and food sucks. Do not come here if you don't speak Cantonese.

China garden is the best place in Orange County for dim sum. Buy 5or6 orders of dim sum plates and get lobster noodles for $6.99. Also love there duck chin and fried tofu.

People say pregnancy changes one's taste. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I have cravings for their shu mai and it has to be China Garden's shu mai to do the trick. Everywhere else just doesn't cut it. Besides their shu mai, my husband and I also like their chicken feet. Their lobster noodle is pretty tasty. Practically every table usually get one since it's $6.99 for weekdays and $9.99 for weekend. We go there so often that some of the dim sum cart ladies know us and automatically know what we like! Besides their dim sum, we also go there for dinner. Their half of peking duck for $10 and 2 small lobsters for $15.99 are great deal! My husband and I come here for dinner and would order at least 4 dishes so we would have leftover. Never once, the server commented, "wow 4 dishes are too many for 2 people" like Capital. Service is fast and food is tasty!

I came to this place for the first time with coworkers on a Saturday before the holidays. We only ordered dim sums. Food Very greasy for the most part, as expected. There must be a ton of MSG and we also felt pretty thirsty afterwards. Service Not much. The server seemed to forget our order of a lobster noodle dish and we had to remind another server to get it. Other Pretty run-down place with old table and chairs.

Oh, China Garden (Hong Chen?), I so cannot with my 88 year old Taiwanese grandmother's love affair with you. Why? Why always this place? Gah... So I've eaten here more times than I can count and I can never decide if it's just me and I'm a weirdo (shellfish allergy) who just doesn't like Chinese-style food, or if it's China Garden and their Chinese-style food is just gross. I guess the Peking Duck is okay, and the other day we had some good dim sum, but it's always so loud and crowded here and the wait is terrible and I just don't know. I really enjoy some of their veggie dishes including the green beans dish. I also like their garlic tofu dish and their garlic pork dish. Some of the other dishes are really salty or oily, though. They did have a lobster+noodles deal where if you bought 3 other things or 6 dim sum things you can get it for $5.

Our family went there for Chinese New Year. The place was a mess, and there were no service provided. We couldn't even get any waiter's attention, after waiving multiple times, and saying excuse me multiple times, we finally saw a waiter (middle age, skinny) walking by, he did not stop. I yelled out "hey, excuse me!!". He heard me and turned to me, didn't walk any closer on purpose. I asked him if we can order a dish. He pretended he didnt hear me and just walked off. After 10 minutes, he came back and put a ticket on our table supposedly with what I ordered and pointed his finger at me and literally yelled out "YOU DO NOT CALL ME HEY, YOU CALL ME SIR NEXT TIME! I AM NOT HEY, I AM A SIR!"... If there is no star, i would have given that. Just like that our Chinese New Year meal was ruined. The only meal I get to spend celebrating Chinese New Year with my sick father. I will never go back and will never forget about this.

Originally I was gonna rate this place a 3 star, but decided to change it because the manager was able to change my mind. I love the Seafood Tofu Pot here! Its one of the best I've had at a Chinese restaurants around OC. One of the dish we got was not good... absolutely not good, but the manager was able to help. For his offer to help out, I added an extra star. Thanks Mr. Manager. I noticed that several dishes were popular at this location: Lobster and Peking duck. I think the Peking duck is worth the price, because its pretty huge and its decent price (Around $14 I think). This place is definitely better than NCSR and more cater to Chinese people.... (I abbreviated because I feel bad for mentioning the other place)

Worst service I have ever experienced. My kids wanted water. The first two waiters ignored the request . The third waiter finally brought some. My wife wanted more than one order of a dish. The waiter would only give one and said she had to wait until later. After that, we asked for the check, paid, and got up to leave without tipping. The waiter harassed my kids on the way out. It's the only time I've not tipped because I understand people live off tips, but it should come with some level of good service.

I always see long lines outside of China Garden on Saturday/Sunday mornings. So, I've been meaning to check this place out for awhile. Well, I finally got to try it, and it's certainly not the best dim sum place in town. Dim sum dishes are priced anywhere from $3-$6, which is typical. Some of the dishes looked questionable... If you don't know how dim sum works, here's the gist. Ladies with carts come to your table and you can pick from the cart what you want to eat. Usually their English is limited, so you can ask them if they have something with shrimp, pork, beef, etc. and they will show you the dish. You can nod yes/no and once she places the dish on your table, she will stamp a timecard looking sheet to indicate how much the dim sum dish is. All these stamps will be calculated at the end of your meal, which will be the total amount of your meal. My two cents: I rather go to Capital Seafood because of the cleanliness of the restaurant. Enjoy! *Tips* - Ask for chili sauce if you're not too big on soy sauce :D

After the usual Sunday post-church confusion, five of us stuffed into a car a la college Walmart run and headed to China Garden to get dim sum. When we arrived, they estimated a 25 minute wait, and they were pretty much right on the mark. The weather had cooled down some, so it was nice enough to stand in the shade outside the restaurant and talk of picnics. Once our number was called, we were seated in the little room off to the right. It took a little while for the food to start flowing our direction. We started out with a plate of gailan, then waited for quite some time before the char siu baos and cheung fun and har gow and shu mai and xiao long bao and daan tart appeared. There was only one shrimp cheung fun on the cart that came around, but the waitress remembered us and brought some more over when it was ready. The cheung fun was really good that day; shu mai was a little fatty for my tastes, but that is why it's so yummy. Our total came to $13 each, and we were all comfortably full afterwards. Not somewhere to go if you are in a hurry, but great if you've got some time and are looking for a variety of food. We were seated at a round table, and a lazy susan would have helped to facilitate the rotation of dishes, but we managed not to spill too many things while passing them around.

This was the WORST *food* I ever ate - I can't even call it Chinese Food. I have eaten at the best Chinese restaurants all of the US and this place does not even qualify for a 1 star. My wife and I ordered Orange Chicken and Shrimp fried rice, my jaw hurts from chewing whatever meat was in the Orange *Chicken*..we basically paid for fried bits of old, chewy rawhide which was unedible...we looked at each other spitting out wads of unchewable *meat*. There didn't seem to be a fresh factor about this Orange Chicken. We are still asking ourselves...where was the chicken??? If this placing is trying to be a dim sum place - stick to one thing...they had NO idea what *Duck Sauce* was...They do not have/make General Tso' chicken...hardly any chicken dishes. I never leave a negative review because I know this is their lively hood - but this was robbery for what we paid and what we got...poor poor customer service and poor poor food quality. LAST TIME WE EVER GO THERE.

They push the carts here! My party of 4 had to wait awhile for the carts to get to our side of the room. The dim sum was average here but I think I would rather go to Capitol in Diamond Jamboree. We ordered the siu mai, hagow, shrimp noodle, sticky rice, chicken feet, Chinese fried bread wrapped in noodle, sticky shrimp ball, and Chinese broccoli. Nothing really stood out but everything did taste fresh.

Pretty decent for dim sum. Service about on par with every other Chinese restaurant that foes dim sum. The shumai and hagaus (please ignore my poor spelling) are always good. I also am a fan of their sticky rice. Decent prices as well. Earlier you come on Sunday the better because it will get busy.

After having read the reviews on here, I went ahead and lowered my expectations and expected a lot of rude service along with my meal. I was told that the Chinese food here was better than many of the others in Irvine. Ok, I'll start off saying that the service wasn't all that bad. We did get greeted and seated right away, but likely because it was only 11am. I'd already tried a lot of dim sum in the area, so thought we'd try some of their regular dishes. Ok, why come to a dim sum restaurant and not try dim sum right? Ok, so we ordered a couple of items off the carts and a plate of seafood crispy noodles from the menu. The dim sum was just very average. Like all the other places, I thought the rice roll skin was way too thick. But at least the shrimp in them were large and plump. The noodles was not too great. Overall rather bland and all I could taste was salt....sometimes a lot of salt. There was just no taste from the seafood and noodles. This was rather disappointing given that this dish is one of the most common in any Chinese restaurant, and for a place like this there's no excuse not to have it down pat by now. 12pm quickly approached and he place filled up to a pretty large crowd.....still no line and wait yet though. I'm honestly surprised that this place is this crowded for this quality of food, but I guess Irvine is just lacking in good quality Chinese restaurants so this place is considered one of the better ones, which explains the crowd. I was told that the crabs are pretty good here, so I will likely come back and give it a try for dinner some day.

Food is pretty good! Like this place a lot better than Capital Seafood. Obsessed with the lo mai gai, the shrimp dumplings, the shrimp wrapped in rice paper, and the pork ribs. This place is pretty expensive and the staff is rude!

Pretty decent dim sum place. I would come here before 11am on the weekends before it starts getting extremely crowded. There are usually a decent amount of carts going around, but for some reason when I went today we waited over 10 minutes before we even saw any cart come by. There were one or two waitresses that walked by with a tray of food but that was it. The service was never that great at this place, but pretty standard for a dimsum place. The variety of food here is decent. My favorite is the siu mai :)

I'm Chinese and I've had authentic dim sum in Hong Kong, so when I say this place has good dim sum - it's good! Make sure to get there around 11 or earlier, or else you'll probably have to wait for a table and the food won't be as fresh. I recommend the sui mai, char sui cherng fun, and ja lerng (sorry if you don't know Chinese lol). The workers typically don't have great English skills, so it could make ordering difficult if you don't know Chinese and don't know what each dish is. There could be a greater variety of the dishes, but it's fine because I always leave happy and full. Three people were full for about $40.

I've been here quite a few times but only recently have I been going for their dim sum, which is served during lunch on the weekends. I think this place is a hit or miss. I've had really good dim sum here before, but the last time I went, it was just alright. I was especially disappointed with their shrimp hargow, which didn't taste as fresh to me. Like the shrimp had no flavor and had a weird texture to it. I was also disappointed with their almond milk tea souffle dessert (on the dim sum cart too). I was really excited to eat this, but was completely disappointed as the almond milk tea was only lukewarm and the pastry covering it had a sour taste to it. It was really odd. I'm surprised I didn't get a stomach ache from that. The other dim sums were okay. Similar to other restaurants. Fyi, each dim sum plate has a different price (ie. there are price tiers, ranging from about $2.50-$4-5ish). I only say this because some dim sum places in SGV or Rowland Heights have one price for everything, which is great! For China Garden, unless you study the dim sum menu and know what each item looks like, you probably won't know its price until you see what tier they stamp it in. Also, just like other dim sum restaurants, you get charged a tea fee of about $1 per person (ie. a fee for just sitting there and ordering dim sum). There's no way around this unless you're not eating dim sum. And fyi, dim sum is best when you have a group of 4 since most plates come in 4 pieces. When me and my family go for dim sum, we always order a rice or noodle dish in addition to the noodle dish. Gotta get some carbs in so it feels like a complete meal! We've tried the seafood pan fried noodle ($11.95) and the dry beef flat noodle ($10.95). They were okay. Nothing I would rave about. Pretty oily though, especially the beef noodle, but it's chinese food...what do ya expect?! If you're not in the mood for dim sum, China Garden is after all a Chinese restaurant and they have quite the extensive menu. If you go for lunch, take advantage of their lunch special dishes, which are just smaller versions of their dinner dishes for cheaper prices. Also, just a heads up, they like to put signs for special prices on seafood dishes, but be careful! When it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't true! Most require a minimum order before you can get it at the special price so be sure to ask your waiter first before ordering or you will get stuck with a big fat ugly bill! Large parking lot, but this plaza gets busy for lunch, especially since it's sharing it with Taiko and A&J. I've never had a problem with parking though and there's plenty in the way back. It's just kinda far hehe. There's always a wait too but typically no more than 20-30 minutes though.

I'll keep this review short and simple. Bad service. It wasn't even crowded. 10 minutes to wave down Hacao and Shumai cart lady. There were maybe 10 tables worth of customers in the restaurant! The waiters kept apologizing left to right and tried to give us the attention but ended up being super creepy. Yes, I'm just that hard to please... Will I come back? Hell to the freaking NO.

The elusive fifth star for dim sum comes around about as often as a pope resigns from the Vatican. That's because there are so many items that screwing up a single item pretty much takes a restaurant out of the running. It doesn't help that everyone vocalizes these sentiments with reviews such as: "The har gow skin was way too chewy," OR "There was too much fat on the spareribs," OR "It was like, 'Wow, do you want some char siu with all of that bao?'" OR "I can't believe they couldn't even get something as easy as chicken feet right." I know those reviews are out there because I've read those reviews, and five stars for dim sum is right up there with "find a cure for cancer, " in my list of things I hope to see in my lifetime. China Garden's grub is actually not that terrible, but it's also not that spectacular. I came here on a weekday with the fam bam, and apparently they've made operational cuts and now have you order off a menu during the week. For those of you who have read my other dim sum reviews, THIS IS NOT KOSHER. First, the menu only allows you to select items for up to two rounds of ordering, which means you are getting a grip of things that all come out at one time. Once you can get over the fact that there are no carts like I could not, it's a pretty standard dim sum meal.

Horrible experience. We came here for the crab special for dinner. They told me the crab was 2lbs and was charged for 2lbs. It was only 1lb. Why do I know? I ate enough steam crab from ranch 99 to tell. Do NOT trust them

Went for Dim Sum lunch the other day and was very pleased. Just what I expected, not much more, not much less. The dim sum is pretty good and prices are reasonable. The menu dishes also looked very good. I saw this lobster with noodles and veg go by and daaaamn! I want some of that! The service was also pretty good (albeit a Monday), and you can't always say that at Chinese joints. The restaurant was clean too, again always can't say that. I'll definitely be going back whenever I get my dim sum jones.

This is pretty typical for Irvine chinese food, overpriced, small portions and.. well not that good. The restaurant decor is decent and fairly clean so that was good, the staff is pretty nice as well and helpful when ordering if you need help. They also have late night specials i think on weedays after 10pm so you can get in a late night bite for cheap, only complaint is that the food wasn't that great, and the portions were very small for what you pay for. They also messed up on our bill which really wasn't that hard.. might come back here for their late night specials but probably not for dinner or lunch

Stopped by for a quick dim sum lunch. Seated immediately and two or three carts were making the rounds. The dim sum was less greasy than some other places I've been (but still greasy ... C'mon, this is dim sum we're talking about people). Food was tasty, they had the lotus seed paste "jeen dui" which isn't available at a lot of restaurants so that was a nice surprise. Finished things off with the lobster noodle special. Not like dim sum in Hong Kong, Toronto or Vancouver but it did the trick.

first i only speak english. but i point really well, a skill i learned in the military during the mid sixties. anyway, be very very polite because the servers all think they are french. the suffle is pretty much warm almond milk. but it has a terific taste if your prepared for it. order it when you sit down. the carts are our main dishes and we love them. i have not learned to order from the big boy menu as yet. usually i ask the waiter for something and get surprised with something else. i do not complain, usually i eat what is servered. always a fun time if your in the right frame of mind. and the food has been good.

We came back for dinner & were quite disappointed with the food. Ordered congee, crispy skin chicken, special lobster, pea sprout w/ garlic sauce. The congee was so much different taste wise from lunch (dim sum) congee.. I have no idea what happened! Do they have different cooks? It's so plain & tasteless! Crispy skin chicken was decent. The skin was very crispy & the chicken was tasty. The lobster.. Uuhhmm lets say i would not order this again. The sauce tastes like watered down sweet & sour sauce. Pea sprout w/ garlic was decent but not the best I've ever tasted. The guy who took our order (our server) understands little english, i asked him for recommendation he ignored me & chose to talk to my husband instead. He had no intention to explain the dishes to us (even when my husband asked him in chinese & cantonese). He was just too lazy to talk that night. He delivered our crispy skin chicken with spicy salt on a small dish, but the salt was wet & clumped together. I thought that was weird because normally it's dry, sand-like texture. I asked another waiter about this & he quickly changed it for us. Overall it's not a good dining experience. I'd choose SW for dinner over this place. They both uses tons of msg, at least at SW we could talk to the server, we could request no-msg & the food tastes better. Will only come here for lunch dim sum.

One of my favorite Chinese food places! The service isn't all that great, but the food definitely makes up for it. I always order the salt and pepper shrimp, shrimp chow mien, pea leaves and spicy green beans. The salt and pepper crab is also delicious! Def a place to try! I am regular here!

I dining here for 4 years and have never had bad experience like tonight. I walk by the front desk by 9:32pm and the guy refuse me to be seated. He was yelling me that they would close at 10 pm and not ok to be seated now. I completely understand sometime restaurant could stop oven/cooking earlier than designated open hours but I did not expect such impolite way to serve a repeating customer. The short guy yelling to me is really not professional as other waiters there. He does not know how to explain early close in a reasonable and polite way but rather shouting "getting out"! I would fire him if I was the owner.

Don't waist your money here you will regrate it Worst place ever. Servive is the worst I have ever encountered. We ordered dumpling and 10 minutes after one course was served the waiter said they ran out. He didn't offer a menu. When a different waiter walked by we asked what the people next to us had he said a couple things and just walked away. No mention or offer of a menu. No water was ever brought.shity attitude

I think the chinese food here is like any other big chinese restaurants I've had. But, I'd like to emphasize how good their Almond Souffle is. It's a little pot of almond milk steamed with a flaky pastry on top. This sweet buttery goodness will leave you going home happy!

  • Curtis C.

The food is good and the servers are nice, but damn, the boss here has such a bad attitude that 1/5 stars is considered highly gracious for someone who completely ruined the restaurant experience. My family, friends, and I came here for dinner and the main course itself was good. It all went wrong during dessert, where we all ordered almond milk souffles, which were advertised on the wall as $3.99. When we got our bill, it said the price of each was actually $8.99. What the heck, right? So we told our server, who ended up having to ask the owner for help. As we rationally explain the case to the owner, he decides NOT to give us a refund or fair pricing and begins shouting that $8.99 is the final price and he will NOT do anything about it. Even as we make our case stronger that this is completely dishonest and he's wrong, he continues shouting (much to the dismay of other customers) and evades eye contact like the poor bastard he is. The boss here is a complete scumbag and a coward of a man. He wouldn't even give us his name because he's too afraid of ridicule. For those of you with Taiwanese friends who refuse to known as Chinese (though Taiwanese people migrated from China), here's a premier example of why this is the case: The boss here is straight from China and he's a completely rude, senile, and arrogant individual. Many of friends actually love Taiwan culture, but find that much of China's mainstream culture is full of whack people like the boss here. Anyways, I'm out. Thanks for ruining our dinner experience, you cheap bastard. Come at me.

Standard Chinese food, open late (until midnight), so that's a major pro for us college students. Prices are average, and they take card and credit. The dim sum service is pretty decent, large variety of dishes, just helps to know what you want to order (and/or bring someone who speaks Mandarin). They have some good noodle dishes too. You won't walk away with a clean, healthy feeling, but considering most of the dishes are fried or fat-heavy, what do you expect?

Better than Capital Seafood at Spectrum (Laowai taste) and Capital Seafood at Jamboree (Not as laowai tasty). So, I guess in Irvine this is one of the better places for Dim Sum. The Shao Mai is pretty good, some days it's better than others but on the worst days it doesn't suck. The Xia Jiao is really good, my favorite. They also have roasted duck which doesn't disappoint, I mean it's kind of hard to find the perfect one unless you're in Beijing or Shanghai. Overall, 3 stars, good for Irvine. I'm not even going to comment on the service. It's a Chinese restaurant, you're kind of being high maintenance if you expect service. That's what you get at PF Changs -- along with the fake Chinese food. HA!

I've come here so many times with my family that I've lost count! I've tried their dim sum and it's pretty good. If you do not want the dim sum menu, you can also try their lunch specials. One of my usual dishes is the Honey Walnut Shrimp. It's so creamy and delicious! Also, I love their Hong Kong style stir-fried rice noodle with beef. Don't forget to try their stone pot dishes as well!

On a Lazy Sunday afternoon at about 1PM, we decided to go to China Garden in Irvine for Dim Sum. There were only 2 of us and when we arrived the restaurant was full, but clearing out. There were several people waiting outside. However we only had to wait about 15 minutes. We were sat in the infamous "side room" and I recalled all the posts about how the side room was one of the worst places to be sat due to the fact that people feel that the carts don't go into this room as often as the other room. We did not find this to be true. As a matter of fact, the second we sat down, there was a cart there and the Dim Sum girl was already barking out what she had to offer. Carts continually came and so did the people with trays. So I didnt experience the lack of carts that many others have talked about. I am convinced that these girls are on some sort of commission system or if they don't sell enough they get tortured in the back. They always slam things around and yell out the selections like they are mad at you. They get pretty pushy at times. I am not Chinese and they seem to get annoyed that I can not understand what they are saying and have to point or ask them to show me what they are referring to. And if you don't take what they are offering, you always get "the look". Notice how this Dim Sum girl is all smiles. These behaviors are not unique to this place. I think its most Dim Sum establishments. The Taro Cake was pretty good. I think it could have been fried longer to develop a crispier, more carmalized skin. I liked the gooey texture of the inside with the chunks of taro. My mom makes this and I hate to say it, but its not as good as mom makes. But its still very good here. Somewhat bland, but in a good way. Drizzle with a little soy sauce and you are good to go. The Har Gow tasted good enough. I have never been to a Dim Sum restaurant where I did not like these. I suppose they could have been a little more delicate with a thinner skin, but they had a very mild, yet tasty flavor and when you bit into them, it seemed like they were full of filling. The Shu Mai were very meaty and dense and had a great peppery flavor to them. Nice size to them as well I enjoyed the tripe. Thin ribbons of tripe in a gingery sauce. The tripe was delicate, firm, and chewy. You need to eat this one rather quick because as it cools the sauce starts to thicken and gets kind of gloppy. But I really loved the flavor of this one. Very Clean and crisp. The pork riblets were tasty. Perfect saltiness to them and they had a nice anise flavor to them. Lots of meat on these and the meat was very tender and came off the bones easily. They had a dish here that I really haven't seen before. The angry dim sum girl called it "Skweh". I would say "Squid?" and she would say "Skweh" again. So I assumed it was squid and luckily it was. However these pieces must be cut from a BIG squid. Big pieces of the top of the squid that comprised most of the dish. Then there were pieces of the tentacles, but very large pieces. So much so, you really couldn't tell they were tentacles. It was in a curry flavored sauce and I really enjoyed this. It wasn't tender, but it wasn't tough either. I would say it was "firm tender". . My favorite Dim Sum dish is chicken feet and China Garden has the best out there in my opinion. I love this dish so much, it deserves its own picture. Deep fried first and then steamed. Completely tender and falling off the bone with so many complex flavors going on. Anise, sweetness, spiciness, saltiness. Nice and chewy tendons. I could eat 3 orders of this stuff. Its like candy to me. They didn't have the yellow egg custard cups that I love. I guess its because we came so late. But everything you see pictured was $23.00 including tip and that served 2 people. In my opinion China Garden does Dim Sum pretty well. And that's from sitting in the "side room" as well.

I've been here twice for dim sum Friday & Sunday morning. This seems to be the only dim sum place in Irvine. Both times my friend and I managed to miss the crowd ! Hahaha so we didn't have to wait at all for a table. I've tried the ngau yauk cheung fan (steamed minced beef noodle) ha cheung fun ( steamed shrimp noodle) ha gau (shrimp dumpling) siu mai ( beef dumpling) cha siu bao ( roast pork bun) xia long bao ( soup dumpling) ngau bat yip ( steamed tripe) = this dish seemed not fresh, slightly sour it was weird gai lan ( chinese broccoli) way too oily good with the oyster sauce though pei dan sau yuk dzuk ( thousand year old egg w/ pork rice porridge ) = too salty taste better when i brought the extra home and added a whole cup of hot water shrimp ball with sticky rice = this was unique i loved the stick rice around it !!! ngai wong bao ( yellow custard bun) = my favorite !!! well this bun is my favorite everywhere LOL but it was so warm and soft here !!! and the crust on top is so crumbly !!!! and the ratio of custard to bun is SO GOOD LIKE 2:1, most other buns custard to bun ratio is like 3 bun to : 1 custard. wtf i know right i think most people like the custard. i tried some other stuff but don't remember anymore. 3 stars because each time I went our total was over 30$ and alot of the dim sum is just way too oily and freshness is questionable. I think the pei dan sau yuk dzuk ( 1,000 year old egg pork porridge) is a rip off because one bowl is on the 3 - $4 dollar section... it probably cost them less than $.25 per bowl but the mark - up is ridiculous.

Have eaten here many many times as it is one of my in-law's favorite places. Have been for dim-sum and dinner. I find the food bland and the service is average. Nothing memorable here.

One of the few traditional dim sum places in Orange County. Usually if a place around here has dim sum, it is not the kind where the ladies circle around with their carts and try to sell you on stuff you don't want. The only other place I know that does it this way is Capital Seafood (Diamond Jamboree and Irvine Spectrum). It is pretty good, enough to get me to not drive all the way up to the SGV or Chinatown. Not quite as good as some of the places up in LA, but still pretty darn good if you're craving the dim sum.

We came here because they were one of the few Chinese seafood restaurants who were willing to take a reservation for Father's Day. When we showed up and saw the huge crowd waiting outside, we wondered who wouldn't try to make a reservation???? Life's too short... The food is usually very tasty. On this particular day, our green onion and ginger lobster was a tiny bit underseasoned though still very tender and well cooked. I also highly recommend the steamed fresh fish (also sold by the .lb, market price) and Dungeness Crab (deep fried w/ garlic style). What this restaurant really lacks is consistent service. For a while, they will pay special attention to you, changing your plates upwards of 3 times. And then they are incapable of refilling your ice water even after having asked 2 different people. All in all, it's a great fall back place for us when we want to take someone out for a special occassion. The fresh, live seafood shocks and awes (or at least impresses) but it takes a bit of aggressiveness to get the service you need - don't be shy to stick your arm up in the air!!

My family have eaten here often, however, their service has never been improved. We usually get the chicken, steam fish, lobster, soup & veggi. Their prices are little high compare to Sam Woo. Be there early, otherwise it's hard to find parking and minimum wait is 25-30 minutes, especially on the weekend.

"Dim Sum"? More like "Dim Difference" Must-haves: Nada Skip: All Did you see what I did???? Terrible jokes aside, avoid China Garden if you can. Food had no flavor. I could taste the bad quality. Bad service. Cart pushers are not friendly at all. Not a good selection relative to other Dim Sum places I've been to. GAH? No steamed pork buns? That's an essential plate! Food: D | Service: F | Selection: D- | Experience: D- | Overall: F

Good dim sum in the morning and good service. The wait is not long at all. It is the best dim sum in irvine that I have tasted!!

I had high hopes when I first saw China Garden. It didn't look fussy and seemed relatively busy. It just looked like a typical chinese restaurant. Seeing as dim sum is cantonese food, should I be worried that they speak to me in mandarin to start with? Dim sum review: Selection: Low Tastiness: Meh, I've had better. Turnaround time: I guess when they run out of something, it takes a really long time for them to get it back out to the carts. That, or they were just trying to get me to just give in and order something else. I also ordered a dish of Singaporean style rice noodles. This was really poorly done. It had a single scallop (not sure why it was there), not enough curry powder, the bean sprouts had sweated into the noodles so it was a soggy mess, and the worst part was that the bbq pork (char siu) strips in there was discolored and funky tasting. I don't mind leftovers being used in my dish, but maybe a taste test before you send it out to us.

Don't come here for the service...come for the food... I'm a die hard for Gong's in HB...they have been a family favourite since we moved into the community back in the 80's... My friends at work always bring food from this restaurant. So we decided to come and try some of the other dishes. The Garlic Lobster noodle dish...amazing! Noodles were soft and spectacular. We also had the fish with spicy salt - delish, my new fave! And the calamari - OMG! You have to order rice on the side, they won't just bring it out. And the Almond "souffle" - is not a true souffle, it's a crock of hot almond milk and a flaky crust on top. I'll have to try this place for dim sum, some time....but, that's another review...

Was craving some dim sum so we decided to come here. The place is close and is decent. Since we got there early, there was hardly a wait but we got seated in the side room, which I hate because usually no carts go through. But they were actually really good about coming by. We ordered the usual kind of food and it was okay. It always taste good at first but all the oil the food is cooked in kicks in. The food is cheap and the service is decent. I would come back here because it's so close to my house but if I wanted better dim sum, I'd prolly make a trip to westminster.

Typical dim sum place in Irvine. I tend to end up here everytime I'm in Irvine for the weekend rather than Capital Seafood to avoid Diamond Jamboree. And somehow after I finish dim sum, I always end up at 85C... Anyway, the wait for this place on the weekend can be excruciatingly painful. I'm pretty sure I've waited for 40+ minutes for a table for 3. I do love getting the turnip cake here though. But more often than not, they seem to 'run out' of things like siu mai and har gau, which seems really odd to me, no? Other than dim sum, I've been here for dinner once or twice s as well. The honey walnut shrimp seems to be a favorite of my friends. The Szechaun Eggplant and Chef's Soy Sauce Special Noodles were quite delicious! All in all. A typical chinese restaurant, imo.

We came here for dinner for the first time tonight and were pleasantly surprised! My husband is a very picky eater and he enjoyed his meal. We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, beef lo Mein, and Mongolian beef. Their tea is good. Service is what you would expect at an Asian place. They get to the point, deliver your food and get you what you need.. With or without a smile depending on who you get (haha) . Overall, we will come back.

The best dimsum you'll find in OC. It's not as modern and beautiful as Capital Seafood but taste-wise, this place is definitely a cut above the rest. If you hate driving up to Monterey Park for good dimsum like me, the China Garden will def. satisfy your cravings for dim sum. If you're having dim sum with your non-Asian friends, bring them to Capital Seafood. If you're eating with Asian friends, they'll appreciate the authentic taste and won't mind the rude service. :)

I cannot speak about the cultural authenticity of the food, but the dishes I ordered were well prepared, fresh, hot, and plentiful. I tried the more "American-Style" dishes and they were far better than any of the large chain or fast food type places in the area. Their Sweet&Sour actually had the correct ratio of vinegar to sugar, rather than being the typical syrup you normally get. My only complaint was that ordering items extra spicy still came out relatively mild. Next time I will be going with some of my Asian friends to try some of the more traditional and authentic seafood dishes rather than the comfort food Western dishes and I will update my review then. Thank you China Garden

Another dirty Chinese restaurant with ok food and bad services. The restaurant is at a good location but you will feel it's very dirty and outdated as soon as you talk in. All the tables and chairs are old. The food is ok not excellent but it's about average. The service is definitely another down point as they just give you whatever you want not customer service oriented at all. I will be really hesitate to go back.

Anyone who lives in Irvine or near by knows that almost everything closes pretty early. I have to say I have been spoiled by places in Rowland Heights, San Gabriel and LA. So to come and to live in South OC and find there are hardly any places to eat late nigh is kinda of sad =(. At this point, I wasn't feeling Dennys or late night Happy Hour at BJs. Until, I came to Irvine China Garden. How did I find this place? YELPERS!!! Thanks guys!!! I saw someone write how this is the place they go to for late night eating, I was like YAY! When I called to make sure they did, they said yes and they also take Credit Card!!!! I really get annoyed when restaurants do not take credit card because no one really carries cash these days except for our old school asian parents. Photo of our yummy dinner: yelp.com/biz_photos/sYUn… My boyfriend for some strange reason... LOVES sweet and sour chicken. Not like a regular fan but like crazy lover fan of sweet and sour chicken. When it came to our table, it looked yummy. There wasn't too many vegetables because who really eats the veggies in sweet and sour. When I took a bite, it was the right crispiness on the outside and the chicken was tender and moist. The sauce was wonderful too, not too sweet and tasted how sweet and sour should taste like. I was really craving Green Beans and Beef stir fry and special ordered it. In the beginning, they were like, we don't have that dish and I was like can you make the dish like Beef and Broccoli but instead of broccoli, use green beans? When the server said yes, i was like yay! Honestly, my bf was taunting me like why did you have to order something special, it is probably gonna taste really bad.. I was like.. Shut up Dorko... but inside.,. i was like.. what if it comes out tasting horrible.... 10 mins later.. the dish came out and it was everything I wanted and the way it was stir fried definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The beef was flavorful and tender and green beans was cooked perfectly. If you have a craving for something, just order it and tell them to modify it just a bit but give them an idea how they should cook it for u. Lastly, we ordered Pei Pa Tofu. If you know chinese food, you cannot get this dish anywhere.. they simply do not make it. my family would always order this dish when i was young. Finally after 15 years later, they actually had this on the menu. I was so excited. I was trying to explain this to my bf about this dish and he thought i was a nut. Anyways, when i took a bite of course it was pipping HOT because it just got deep fried but It was so good. Pei Pa Tofu is like mashed tofu mixed with mushrooms, onions, chinese sausage, shrimp.. formed into a dumpling and deep fried. it doesn;t sound good but when you taste it.. it is great.. if you liked deep fried tofu.. you will like this more My bf and I had a ton of food left over. The service was actually pretty good for a chinese restaurant, maybe it was because we arrive late at night. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because they didn't tell us about their LATE NIGHT MENU until after we were done. We came in at 9:45 and their late night menu starts at 10pm. Our 3 dishes plus rice came to $37. That is pretty pricey. If we ordered from the late night menu, the portions would have been smaller and our bill could have been only $18 or less. Overall the food was great and I will definitely come back for their Late Night Menu.

Got here on a sunday before noon. There was already a line but we were seated in about 15 minutes. The variety here is ok and the taste is decent though not fantastic. Definitely better than Capital seafood and probably Sam Woo.

The decoration of this place makes me feel at a nice Chinese restaurant with their live seafood on display. The food tastes like what it's supposed to taste like and the service is decent. I'll definitely keep coming back.

I like this place, I've been here a few times and its consistently very good food. Sometimes they do serve cold food on some of the dim sum carts/trays, which is unacceptable. However, the food here truly is good and its always a great experience. Gets super crowded at lunch time so come early or be ready to wait. Not the best English speakers pushing around the dim sum carts, so having somebody that knows what all the food is already with you isn't a bad idea for the uninitiated. I really can't understand those of you who call this "standard chinese food," because I had never had dim sum until I moved to the west coast. Definitely something worth trying.

The worst service I have ever experienced in Orange County. The food is just ok. The service is horrible. Waiters gave you a impatient attitude and even yelled at the customers. We will never enter the restaurant again!!!

Like a bad relationship...sometimes I like it here sometimes i hate it. The first time I went here I thought it was OK because I did not have to wait long...unlike Capital Seafood...ridiculous waiting time! I often come to this area and so thought I would give this place a try. My first time here was actually nice. service was slow but OK and thought the Dim Sum was decent not excellent. I hate it when they run out of Su Mai...the two times that ive been here it would take forever for the Su Mai lady to come around and when I ask for it...they always tell me "later" The second time here the service was poor. Seems like we were waiting to get the attention of the Dim Sum carts and took them awhile to come our way. Then again...had to wait for the Su mai! We ordered some steamed chinese broccoli and they were way overcooked. It was suppose to be crunchy but it was way too soft. I told the server that they overcooked it and he was pissed, he told me that is how its suppose to taste...really? I'm asian...I KNOW how its suppose to taste. So finally, he gave in to me and got us a new plate that was actually crunchy, although it took almost 15 minutes. We then ordered some egg-rolls and 15 minutes later the server came out to say sorry they came out...BUT they will make new ones...in 20 minutes! Forget it....at this point I am full and not willing to wait. I come here when I am craving for Dim Sum because I simply want it right now and waiting 45+ minutes won't do it for me. I think I will venture out to find other great Dim Sum places in Irvine...if that is at all possible. I still think the best Dim Sum is in Garden Grove. =)
