Went here after punishing my gut at Leucadia's with a lobster pizza. We had a pizza and a few pitchers between the two of us, so we were feeling good when my buddy told me about this place. He said it looks like the typical Mexican place, but that I would love the margaritas here. Not knowing what he meant, we stopped in, ordered a couple of margaritas for about $25 after tip, and sat back and waited. Gorged a little more on their amazing salsa and chips, and then IT came. At first, I have to admit, I was disappointed. The margarita was small. Then I tried it. It reminded me of Little Mac from Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Here was this little thing that carried a huge punch. We each got another one before heading out and we were GOOD. And by that I mean buzzed. All in all, well worth the trip, the price, and the buzz.

good diablo camarron. Lively atmosphere. there were three birthdays tonight while we were there - we weren't one of them. Real professional staff. Upscale, relatively pricey - Mexican food.

Good food, noisy - so if you bring kids, it's ok, if you're there for happy hour, it's happy, not outrageously expensive. We went there on a weeknight last week and I was surprised by how many kids were there. I realized we usually go on a Friday, so it's more crowded with Happy Hour people. This time I got the beef medallions with chipotle sauce - YAY! It was great. Is it "authentic Mexican"? Don't know, don't care, it tasted good. Margaritas are strong. Two and I'm lit (only had one). They have a kids menu that my kids don't order from. They prefer the main menu stuff. Menu items aren't so obscenely huge that my kids have to split something. Parking in the front lot can be tight, but otherwise we can find something in back, just go up the ramp or come in from the cross street.

Yo quero El Callejon! This spot is a rad independent Mexican restaurant & bar with good food and drinks. They even have a Vegetarian menu. I popped in and ordered up the Flautas de Papas (crunchy shelled rolled tacos with potato inside). They were topped with cheese, red sauce and cream. The perfect little snack I was looking for.

el callejon is pretty close to my house so I make it in from time to time. They have really yummy margaritas ( a great happy hour from 3-6 during the week) 2 bars, indoor and outdoor seating. I really like ordering the cebollitas appetizer which are green onions grilled or maybe fried not sure exactly but they are really tasty. My date and I shared the parrillada plate which was carne asada, chicken and pork with rice, guacamole beans, rajas and tortillas. The rajas are chiles with some kind of cream and are very delicious. one thing I did notice was they didnt bring out any chips for us this time so maybe you have to request them or pay for them now. the portions are fairly large service pretty quick. they dont stay open super late though

Nice staff here, nice Mexican tropical vibe but the food is really mediocre for the incredibly high price. Entrees are almost all $16+ for food that you can get at Raul's or other Mexican eateries close by. The chipotle sauce is tasty but the rest is just not that great. Totally feel completely ripped off.

It being the last weekend of our first year of college, a friend of mine suggested El Callejon as our final suite dinner. I give this place 5 stars for the following reasons 1. Location---the drive to Encinitas from UCSD is breathaking, especially if you drive as the sun is near setting, but I'm sure it's beautiful at most times. The curve of the shore fits in perfectly with the music played on 94.9, which is deliciously old as in from maybe 5 years ago. Which is nice when you're in college because it's familiarly nostalgic for all involved. But really, it's a nice view whether you're on 94.9 or not. 2. Colorful chairs--there's just something about multicolored chairs that makes your day better. 3. The most amazing chips/salsa combination I've ever experienced. I guzzled these down, if that's possible. Both salsas were very tasty, and the chips had all these nice little air holes, not that that matters really, but they were tasty. I think our 4 person section of the table went through 3 large bowls of chips, and that's saying a lot because we're not fatties or binge-eaters. 4. Attentive waitstaff. The only complaint was how diligently they refilled the chips. The chips were too delicious. I guess I wouldn't recommend this place for someone who's trying not to eat chips, because they make it a little more difficult. 5. Delicious meals 6. Mariachi band 7. even the flan was tasty. (the price range for a meal goes from 8 dollars to 20something, it really depends on the amount of food you want.) OTHER WARNINGS: the restaurant's still worth the five stars but it should be known before going that the roof is open in places, so bring a sweater if you're going at night also the train runs right nearby and sometimes you hear it, but it's still very possible to hold a conversation without yelling.

The family and I had dinner there a few nights ago and really enjoyed it. It was lively during the middle of the week but the staff was very attentive. Everything that we had tasted fresh from the salsa to the meats and sides. The portions were hearty so I can't imagine anyone would leave without being stuffed. My wife had carne asada tacos which were good but I had the Sabana Arriera which was Awesome!

  • Jay C.

This is almost as good as it gets for Mexican food (that is, outside of Mexico). I will admit that the prices are a bit high but the quality of the food is worth it. My favorite dish is the Camarones Tocino. This entree translates to 5 grilled jumbo tiger shrimp wrapped in bacon. I mean JUMBO! A salad, side of rice, and tortillas come with the meal. The Sabana Arriera is also very good. The description from the menu reads as follows: Top sirloin steak covered with a Chile de Arbol, onion, olive oil and garlic sauce. Served with rice, beans and rajas. VERY HOT! It is as good as it sounds. This is the place to go for quality Mexican food whenever I am in the mood while I am in North County San Diego. Come with a hearty appetite because not only do they have an endless chips basket but the portions are JUMBO, like the shrimp.

Nice atmosphere, but the food was not very good. My mole was two thin sliced chicken breasts, that were dry and smothered in a sauce that was OK, but not fantastic and I was disappointed when I remembered I was paying 18 for this meal.

So far I've visited this restaurant 3 times. In all three cases I've experienced mediocre to bad service and poor to fair quality food. If you're going for drinks and by drinks I mean tequila only (crappy beer selection) then you might have good time. Just make sure not to get a table and expect service, just go to the bar and order your own food/drinks. The food, besides from being average at best in quality, is very overpriced. Last time I went there I was in the mood for a Carnitas plate only to find that it was over $18. I settled for 2 Carne Asada tacos for around $10. My friend with me ordered the beef enchilada's and received cheese instead. All in all I think this place needs a complete overhaul. From the menu, to the bar, to the service. I do not recommend this place and (hopefully) will not be back unless they make some serious changes.

with so many mexican food options in san diego why would anyone eat here? greasy, flavorless and otherwise uninspired culinary concoctions that are neither memorable or pleasurable to the pallet. Yuck!

I went to San diego this weekend. I was hoping for an adventure, so I Jumped on the Coastal Train heading up the 101 to see more Southern California Dream Towns. After canvassing all the coasts for towns with seaside views I found Encinitas home of El Callejon Restaurant . A really cool looking Beach town with a beautiful Main Street. I Loved this town & this restaurant! Make sure to go for the Happy Hour, It's truly Happy and the food is unreal

Really wish the food was better and better priced for what you get because the ambience is awesome- love the outdoor seating and I LOVE the servers. I've been here a few times but the last time I brought my out-of-towner sister and her baby. The waiters kept coming by and making my 8 month old niece laugh! Their positive attitudes were infectious- they were all so nice! The wait staff and the ambience make this place (not the food and certainly not the prices). Great for groups and great for kids!

  • Cynthia K.

Used to be my favorite Mexican food place in the area but the old waitstaff is gone and the food just isn't as good as it used to be. I hope they get back to being as good as they were.

    (3)
  • Jennifer W.

Meh. I'm usually there during the day. Although the food is good, it's overpriced, and it can be difficult to get the attention of the servers. For some reason, every time I'm here there are screaming, ill-behaved children everywhere. I guess their mommies need margaritas.

WOW!! I cannot believe all the good reviews for this place! The only reason this place even got a star is because I met a really cool girl here once..... but that's another story for another day (and to be totally honest does that have anything to do with the caliber of food or service...oh well i was smitten.). Just for starters anywhere I can spend a hundred dollars on lunch better be pretty good, anywhere I can spend a hundred dollars on lunch and not be drunk or full better be a culinary wonder of the fucking world!! I have been here at least four times now (some for dinner some for lunch, only once for happy hour so I won't bag on it) all at someone Else's suggestion. The Carne Asada plate- Ummm skirt steak beans rice and a tortilla. You really only need to do two things to insure success, do not burn anything and try and bring it to the table warm. The carne asada reminded me of the emu jerky my friend brought me from Australia, except the emu was a little more tender and a lot more flavorful. The beans were hot, no, borderline molten it was too bad I had to mix my meat and rice with them to thaw out! Flautas- my favorite. I love flautas and since they are hard to find at restaurants I was excited to see that El Callejon had them. It was like being nine years old and getting that publishers clearing house assured million dollar winner in the mail! When they arrived someone had to explain to me that yes they were flautas (cuz it looked like a huge pile of shredded lettuce and sour cream) and yes I would love them. Wrong again. The mini flautus were not just soggy from the sour cream sea they were not quite floating in, they were a little raw in the middle with soggy uncooked tortilla. I could go on with about a hundred other items (totally exaggerating) but Ill leave you in peace. My sorta kinda ex girlfriend loves the riojas here so if you must go try that. Otherwise wise friends, drive on by. No matter which way your headed on coast highway your going towards a Fidel's which in my opinion is a much wiser decision. P.s. for those of you who are like me, see a bad review and think awesome I wanna see just how bad, don't do it man, don't do it. This is not one for those places. It will leave you financially crippled and wondering if you will ever be able to go to a full service Mexican food "eatery" again.

THIS. PLACE. IS. GOOOOOD! i have never had anything that wasn't excellent here! the menu has a great selection of traditional dishes, plus many newer concoctions... puntas oscar, enchiladas benito, rajas, and medallones al cilantro are HIGHLY recommended. 2 THINGS TO REMEMBER:1) on weekends, make a reservation. 2) do not underestimate the ( alcoholic) drinks.... they aren't messing around. also... bonus points for the tequila selection. not sure the exact #, but at least 300 different kinds.

I have been 5 times now. The food was great one time, good two times, and acceptable the other two times. The service is embarrassing, I have taken out-of town visiting friends almost every time and find my self apologizing every time. Today I tried to take a family member who was here on vacation and finally told the server we were leaving. He made no apologies. I will likely grab a beer here by myself, but will never make the mistake of taking others here again. It was 1 o'clock, there were only 5 tables in the restaurant, and 3 visible employees.

Visited with another SD local today and SO wanted to love this place, partly based on Yelp reviews. Would have given it 1 star but for our waiter Sebastian, who was doing his absolute best on a short staff and who comped me a margarita for our troubles, REALLY appreciated that. Our first impression was of a lot of yellow tape strung between areas of the restaurant, reminding us of a crime scene. Maybe they are remodeling? We were really looking forward to the Queso Fundiito with Chorizo, but it was disappointing, the cheese was gummy and almost hard. Also, the salsa with the chips was watered down with almost no heat. While we wanted to try the more adventurous items on the menu, we didn't have much confidence after the appys so tried taco combos which were delivered with completely different ingredients than we had ordered. Sorry to say, we won't be back, but hope that our poor experience is due to the remodel.

  • Kristina B.

You know, I've been here a lot and still haven't found "my thing", you know the go-to entree that you can always rely on. The rest of the family are puntas oscar people, which is apparently a specialty, but I just can't get into it. I've tried the ceasar salad (really weird presentation and you have to cut up the leaves yourself which I don't dig) and the tacos (meh) and a bunch of other things. One thing I did like was the rolled tacos. This time I got the pastor quesadilla and it was ok. The pastor was tasty but the black beans on the side were not cooked completely. Service is also spotty and it can be tough to get water refills. The chips and salsa are always tasty. Personally, I prefer El Indio or Fidel's.

How long can one survive on a diet of god-sent margaritas (stiff, full of flavor, and addicting) and super crisp heavy duty chips with perfect salsa?

    (5)
  • Kate F.

I must say I was looking forward to this as I love Mexican food but I was disappointed by the food here. I had Enchiladas with mole, rice and beans, my friend thought it was sweet and I thought it tasted as if it was 'caught' it could also have been warmer. One of my friend's had the prawn cocktail which she felt it tasted like strong tomato juice, I thought it was OK but it could have done with vodka and a stick of celery! My other friend had tortilla soup and an appetizer of chorizo and potato quesadilla which were enjoyed. I also had a Margarita and we were given chips and salsa both of which were delicious and would defiantly recommend having them. All in all I thought it was a bit expensive for what it was I paid $25 inc tax and tip for a Margarita and enchiladas!

  • Kelly P.

5 star margaritas make El Callejon a great "drinks only" destination. Life is good after one. You won't remember what it's like after two. The upside: forgetting about the food.

    (3)
  • Camille L.

My favorite place in North County for great selection of authentic Mexican dishes. The chips and salsa can't be beat and they serve the best margarita in town (possibly the best I have tried...ever...). Love the casual atmosphere and mariachi's on the weekend!

Stomach aches and good times! OK, so I don't always feel the best after I leave, but the times I always have here are super fun! I really appreciate the friendly staff and the great location. I recommend this place to anyone who has a group of friends who want to hang out for hours and laugh. Super great meeting place!

El Callejon has awesome chips and salsa! Their bloody mary's are so yummy. I also highly recommend the chicken flautas with the green sauce! Can't go wrong!

  • Jory S.

El Callejon, you had me at "Hola." Went here for dinner last night and had the best service ever. Sebastian was our waiter and he was SO informative, funny, and quick! Totally made our meal great. Everything came out fast and the staff was just on top of everything! The chicken mole was superb! All breast meat and the portion was large and in charge. Minus one star because it's really pricey. A Cadillac Margy runs $13.50. (Steep!) and the entrees are about $19 each. But, you get what you pay for... and this is some bomb ass Mexican food. p.s.- Free Entree Coupon in the Entertainment Book!

Tonight was my first time eating at El Callejon. Great chips & salsa, decent service, good chicken enchilada. Overpriced, but it is close to downtown Encinitas. Looks like the bar would have been fun at night.

This was one of the worst experiences we've ever had at a restaurant. We sat at the bar and the bartender (who was balding, had a mullet and a mustache (not important, just added to the atmosphere)) seemed annoyed we were there, trying to convince us to sit somewhere else. We told him we were fine with the bar and ordered our drinks. I ordered a margarita and he promptly turned around to get it out of a pre-made jug. (I would later find out there was a Cadillac July special from another bartender that I probably would've liked more.) The food was bland. The rice and beans were the worst I've ever had. The service was terrible. The bartender snatched the signed receipt off of the bar when I was finished and never said "Thank you." I would avoid this place at all costs. So many other great places in Encinitas. Watch (or listen) to the entire review at youtube.com/watch?v=256a…

Decent happy hour. Drinks: Used to be 2-for-1, but think it was changed to $3 margheritas. They come in the smaller size, and are quite good. They're made to order (no slushy machine here) and aren't the typical margheritas made w/ a splash of vodka and loaded with sweet & sour, but are balanced and refreshing. Food: authentic chips and salsa (super hard chips). Decently priced happy hour appetizers. But what's this? No nachos! Yikes, a big turn off for me. On the other hand, my friends dig their rojas or whatever it's called (peppers swimming in queso served with warm little tortillas.) Downside: happy hour is only valid in their tiny bar area, and that can get quite packed. Heard their Vista location is ALOT better (bigger bar, better drinks, faster service, etc.)

  • Jen B.

When I drank, this was one of my favorite places on the planet. Their margaritas are not to be missed. Now that I don't drink, I have to confess that I don't like the food as much as I thought I did. The chips are sublime - hot and crispy and delicious. Served with two salsas! Beyond that, it's all pretty good but not fantastic. I ordered the Combinacion Plan-something. It was chicken mole enchiladas (fried crispy! that's different) and chicken huararches and chicken enchiladas. I know, why did I order it if it was all chicken? I dunno - I expected sooooome variety. But it was unsauced white meat (dry) chicken over and over. Meh. My friend ordered pork carnitas tacos and was very happy. But she doesn't eat cheese or tomato so I just don't think she's the best judge! (She's also both Cuban and Jewish so the whole carnitas thing is just weird anyway.) Hee hee. All that being said, you MUST try the margaritas. They're ridiculous!

Not a very good Mexican restaurant. Service is slow & some waiters barely speak English. Find another place if you can. Drive south on PCH to Las Olas instead. Parking lot is extremely small.

My husband and I go there all the time, from Thursday nights with Los Tres Sapos playing to a Friday night dinner. The serving staff is awesome which we always request to be seated in Manuel's section. We order a shot of tequila and along with a shot of sangrita. We get taken care of by Manuel. Their especial are always good but my favorite is the Camarones con Chipotle, spicy good. No recession here when it comes to splurging on a good meal, good margaritas and a of course a good tequila. One downside, a bit dissapointed on the 3 piece band they have coming around on Friday and Saturday nights. I kept requesting good mexican songs and they didn't want to sing. They only stuck with your usual white boy Para Bailar la Bamba songs.

Every time I haven't been to El Callejon for a while I start to forget just how much this restaurant is my ultimate favorite restaurant of all of North America, until I return and remember all the delicious authentic mexican dishes they serve! MMMMMMM they're good! For starters you MUST have the Chipotle soup...large to share with your friends. That's all you need for a starter, it's so rich and creamy and full of chipotle deliciousness! It's got a small kick to it but nothing over powering. As for the rest of the entrees you really can't go wrong with anything. I've been to El Callejon a few times now and I've left the restaurant feeling full of great mexican food. I usually order a some type of chicken dish and it's always spectacular! The dishes are always large portions and I'm always coming home with leftovers (which are great for breaky the next morning). They have an open patio, so be sure to bring a California winter jacket if you're going in the evening. And the prices are certainly reasonable for what you get. It's my favorite restaurant and I've already got plans to spend my birthday supper at El Callejon.

I have been in San Diego 2.5 years now and I have been looking for a Mexican food place like this the entire time! This place is seriously legit. I had the Oscar special or whatever it's called and not only was it unbelievably tasty, but I think it might be able to cure the common cold. Average gringo beware this thing is spicy. The chips are great, but what is a good chip without amazing salsa! They've nailed it. I had a great margarita there - made with one of the Stimulus Bill sized amounts of tequila bottles they have (read billions). I think I'll be going again tonight... and tomorrow.

Great food, very authentic and a huge tequila bar. Yes, service can be uneven at times, but normally it is great, food is out quickly and we always have a good time. Don't miss the mole enchiladas or tamales!

The reviewers have said it all already. Margaritas, chips and salsa, great food, and atmosphere. The langoustine in chipotle sauce was a great plate of food. The fish tacos were delicious as well. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. Only one negative, service seemed slow even though we were there before the dinner rush. We sat next to one of the doorways where the owner (I assume) was calling the shots, ordering the help around. It was a little distracting, since he appears to be a little dictatorial. Go ahead, be dictatorial, but not in front of your customers. The food was great, though and we would be happy to come back.

The Margaritas are really good!! We went for happy hour on a Friday night. They were $3 and pretty strong! We ordered chicken flautas, carnitas quesadilla, tacos al pastor (pork), and a baja fish taco. We were also served chips and green salsa with a side of pico de gallo. The apps were pretty decent. I enjoyed the flautas and the hubby enjoyed the quesadilla the most. We had decent service as well. Our total check ended up being $33. By the time we were leaving, the mariachi band had started playing in the bar...darn... I love mariachi bands. We might have to hit up the happy hour again sometime.

Best Mexican food in San Diego. Bold statement, I know, but I've yet to have better. Great place to take people from out of town. GREAT for kids b/c it's outdoors and loud - plus they have Horchata and all kids get a churro and ice cream for dessert. Ask for the salsa verde with your chips.. it's amazing. The calamari is delish and their carne asada and carnitas are insane. And the margaritas.. oh yum. Made from fresh lime juice - they are the real thing.

I will go back here for sure. Very good food and so-so service. We went on Monday, which is a bad night for dining out, and were impressed in how fast the food was prepared. When you go get the carnitas, i don't care what it is on, taco, quesadilla or just plate...it is the bomb! Enjoy!

We totally stumbled into this joint after the visit to the Flower Fields. I thought I was in Mexico when we stepped into their colorfully decorated patio. It was busy, yet very relaxing. Everyone seemed to be having fun. I was surprised to see mole and pibil on their menu, which told me that this is no ordinary taco place. We ordered conchinita pibil (excellent!), puntas de pollo (very good), pollo con chile verde (very good), chicken taco (OK) and quesadilla (OK). I also liked that they gave us salsa and chips and jicama and carrot sticks. Their salsa and guacamole were excellent! The servers were very friendly and attentive. Somehow corona tasted better at El Callejon and I highly recommend this place!

This is formerly my favorite Mexican restaurant in north county. I say formerly because in the past year their food has gone downhill in a major way. It used to taste fresh, spicy and delicious, and the fact that they have a vegetarian menu is a plus. But the last 3 times I have been there (I gave it a few chances to redeem itself) it was awful and I won't be returning. While food coming out quickly is a plus it comes out so quickly that it has to be pre-made. Their formerly delicious and spicy enchilada sauce is now bland tomato sauce, and for $14 for a plate of enchiladas I could get better ones across the street at Filiberto's for a quarter of the price. I am hugely disappointed because a I said, this used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant.

Very authentic. I love the location and we walked off our lunch there on the beach. My husband had the chicken enchiladas, which I wish I ordered - I got lobster tacos and I was not digging the sauce the lobster was in and thought the dish was pretty bland. Salting everything made it better :) I'd go here again and try something different based on what I ate of my husband's meal.

We had some delicious michiladas on their patio made with real lime juice. Ordered the ceviche tostada and the potato flautas. I enjoyed my flautas and my friend said the tostada was good but not great. The salsa is pretty tasty and we liked the uncovered patio. There are umbrellas available if you get too hot.

I am writing my review on their happy hour only (weekdays 3-6pm) because I haven't been during another time. I love love love El Callejon! Delicious margaritas for only $3 and they're STRONG! While I haven't heard many good things about their food, I think their quesadillas fritas, chips and salsa are great. The green salsa is super tasty and the margaritas are the best around!

This is our 2nd home. Lyric is growing up there! We frequent EC A LOT, by a lot I mean almost everyday. Another addiction I have = their margaritas. They are the bomb. They use real lime juice, no mixer crap. Their staff is uber friendly and we just love going there! My hubby loves their chipotle with anything. I love their cilantro soup.. YUM! I even add a side of rice to it now to change it up a bit. Lyric loves the soup too. He likes to dip his quesadilla in it, and turn into a little green "cilantro monster". Oh-- they are very kid friendly, and they have lots of lollipops for the everyone. Cheers!

Happy hour was great and filling! The bar was full, but the hostess let us know that she would be able to get us a table in the dining room and we would still be able to get happy hour. Happy hour food was good..I would suggest the carnitas street tacos. The chips are really good. The salsa they bring with the chips is more of a chunky tomato style salsa..I prefer spicy, saucy salsa which they had and brought to the table a red and a green one. The service was good! My friend ordered a margarita and it was yummy and very strong. I had a very cold beer. Loved the ambiance of the place very colorful! WE will definitely be back!

Stepped in for a few quick beers. Bartender tells us the only two open seats were taken. We go ahead and sit at open high table. Waiter refuses to serve us. We leave. Return 45 minutes later after going to other bar, seats at bar are still open. End of story. Nice service thanks for wasting my time.

Came here Sunday night. Not very busy. Service was slow. Very disappointed in food. Was here before and had a great time. Pick de gallo style salsa that serve with chips tasted very old. Food was bland and expensive. Had poblano cheese appetizer with chorizo, very disappointed. Green sauce was great. Meat Tamales had cinnamon in them and was really sweet. Advised us shrimp taco combo had two tacos and really only had one. I like the atmosphere but I am a local and I guess they are trying to cater to tourists. I won't be back for awhile.

We have been here a few times and it's just ok. I don't like the menu. There isn't much to choose from and the dishes aren't too great. It's also relatively expensive for Mexican food. Better options are close by.

I probably eat here half-a-dozen or more times a month and have yet to have a bad experience. Margaritas - the best around; even the standard house ones are better than top-shelf ones at most establishments. All made fresh there, none of that off-the-shelf mix crap. Pastor tacos - the pork ones may have become my favorite meal, I rarely even look at the menu (which is huge) anymore. Service - always solid; Oh, and their chips and salsa could be a meal all on their own (and have been for me some nights). If you're looking for a great meal with a cool atmosphere, you'll have a hard time finding a place better than this.

What a great place for a tour bus lunch. Poor service, pricey and "food" arrives quickly. It's tasteless and will stay with you through the next day or two. Nice inside. Could be a great place if converted to a bar. Why does the menu weigh 3 pounds?

Amazing happy hour. They do have a younger, teenage looking bus boy who is a bit obnoxious. But the waiters were amazing, and most importantly so were the margaritas and the foods.

We were in town for a few days, decided on this place because it was close to our motel. The waiter was very scatter brained and dis organized . Food was ok but it took a long time to get it . Plus it seemed like the waiter had more time to dance on tables than take care if the patrons

First time in El Callejon and it was an ok experience. Service was a little slow and was never checked up on. Food was ok. We ordered the combo for 2 and it wasn't as big as we thought especially for the price. The restroom were not as tidy as they should be. The tissue papers were simply laying everwhere. No returns for us.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is very festive and I really wanted to like it. The service was terrible, our server didn't even tell us his name before he started complaining about how busy it was and how much he hated it. I commented that it's good for business but he apparently didn't agree. We went through 2 baskets of chips before our drinks arrived and went through our drink before our food arrived. The food was bland and tasteless. I'm usually not one to ever send good back but if I'm paying $14 for fish tacos, I want them to be phenomenal. I do not recommend you go here unless you're just grabbing a drink and don't care about the service.

Unfortunately, maybe the "worse" Mexican food I have ever had. I ordered a chicken taco with quacamole, a chicken enchilada and rice and beans. Never got my ice tea, food came but no quacamole. The quality was not even close to Taco Bell :( I have lived in North County for many years and with all the Mexican restaurants one can go to, this would be a the bottom of my list for quality and service.

4 stars, when I first came here, a year ago, I did not post a review as it was okay, just okay, this time it was great. We had several appetizers and two pitchers of top margarita. The timing I think was perfect, just before the evening rush and lovely appetizers - stuffed avocados, quesadilla bites and tacos. Staff was friendly and prompt - definitely up for a return visit.

This is, and always will be my favorite restaurant of all time. I have been going here forever, grew up in Encinitas and love everything from the food, the drinks, to all of the guys there! My favorite thing to order is the tacos al pastor and the cebollitas cambray. I tried to make them at home but they will never be as good. Always a favorite place to go, colorful, loud, and MEXICAN! John and Antonio are the best!

Good was sub par for taco Tuesday at the bar. And the bartender had no idea what he was doing. I received the wrong order twice and wrong drinks twice. The only reason I'm not giving it a 1 star is because I have friends that like the place. Don't know why!?

We walked in and were quickly seated by the kitchen doors (I didn't scope out the restaurant to notice that there was FOUR four tops in the section to the left of me.) I understand I have a kid, but putting me there was less than desirable. The ambiance and the ability to sit outside, score! Server came immediately with salsa and home made chips I asked the server for the most popular margarita, I ordered it, it came in a rocks glass ** side note: $8 a pop, the server should've asked if was going to have more than one, BC I should've ordered a pitcher after drinking two of them. I told the server I have never been there (see Margarita) I ask for the Pellizcadas (bowl shaped tortilla filled with beans, chicken, salsa, cheese and cream), 2 Huaraches (Oval shaped tortilla filled with beans, salsa, onions and cilantro), rice and beans. (I sub out the quesadilla.) I didn't ask what i should've ordered, but I wish him/she would've told me it was bland and the "tortilla" was rock hard to cut with a knife. I ended up picking it up with my hands and eating it. Also, I subbed out the beans for black beans. I expected drained black beans. I got wet black beans (straight from the can.) The busboy went directly to the server and discussed it with him/her. I don't know why. He should've taken the plate back and drained the beans. Instead of discussing the food prep and making a scene (you bitch about the needy person AFTER you give them the food or in the kitchen!) But, the best part... my son getting to go into the bar and dancing to the band! Note to server: when someone tells you that they are from out of town, guide them to the best items on the menu. I've worked in the business for years, and it'll leave you a better tip. My rating isn't for the server, it was for the bland food and the size margarita glass :)

My parents visited, BFs parents visited, both times we scurred over to El Callejon with them in tow-love the atmosphere and liked the food! It's pretty simple service, hi how are ya, take your order, refill the chips, muchas gracias. It's good for a larger group, when you have convo flying back and forth and you're entertained all on your own, not the best if you're a two top trying to be romantical though. The Margs are great-but pricey! They really try and up-sell on the tequila, which really in a margarita doesn't matter all that much. The parking can be a pain when it is super busy. We luck out usually and find a spot when people are leaving but if that's not the case, on a busy Friday, you'll be searching awhile. The live music can be fun, and it isn't too obnoxious. A solid A-okay, and the Encinitas location makes it a nice touristy stop.

First time here and I'm a Mexican food snob. Especially when it comes to a Chile Relleno. I haven't found an authentic one in ages ... so I wasn't very excited. BUT WOW, it was soooo delicious! And, I immediately told my husband that I could tell they actually used a real Mexican pasilla chile and not some California anaheim or other substitute. I could also tell they took the time to grill the chile before stuffing it and baking it. When the owner came around to check on us (great customer service on a busy Valentines evening) he confirmed my thoughts. The carnitas taco was also excellent - seasoned to perfection. The food came quickly and the service was great. I'm so happy to FINALLY have found a damn good chile relleno and real, authentic Mexican food (and from all over Mexico, not just Tijuana). LOVED IT!

My wife and I have been going to El Callejon for many years. We decided to take my wife's parent's there. They have great food, typically decent service, and atmosphere is good. However, what I witnessed last weekend will keep us from ever going back to support the restaurant (more specifically, the owner) again. I had not seen this waiter before so he may be new, but repeatedly needed to be reminded for things: silverware (asked twice), hot sauce (asked twice), to-go carton (asked twice). This actually didn't bother me so much. I understand they are busy. Oh yeah, my silverware was also not cleaned and had old lettuce stuck to it. I noticed the owner stands around looking at everything and everyone. He was about 10 feet from me sitting in the bar as I watched the interaction with him and the waiter. My father-in-law asked if there is a senior discount. The waiter went to the owner and asked and the owner proceeded to roll his eyes, smirk, and asked "who asked that?" and jestured as if he was annoyed and disgusted at the question. This may be a normal reaction or he didn't even mean anything by it, but I would advise not to do this out in the open, as myself, and certainly other customers can see. I thought it was rude and it made him look like a real jerk. He may even be a nice guy. His restaurant is great, but it's simply too bad that this kind of horrible impression was made. I have trouble supporting someone who acts like that and certainly doesn't have the consideration to do it in private. Nobody would want to witness someone making them feel stupid. No, I did not tell my father-in-law

Service was horrible! Young blonde waitress was so out if it. Never checked on us once. Entire table had empty drinks for at lest 15-20 mins. Had to flag her down multiple times to get help. Food was awful. The guy dropping the food off practically threw it in our laps. And EXPENSIVE! $17 for a combo plate? LOCO! Never going back.

I took my MIL to the Self Realization Garden, she was visiting from Oregon. We decided we wanted to have Mexican for lunch, and this was a great little find on the way home. The chips and salsa were home made and the prices were reasonable. I even tried a margarita, but said to make it not too strong since I was driving. It was great! I loved the open patio and lights, if I lived in Encinitas this would be my hang out place.

I really wanted to love this place. I LOVE Mexican restaurants, and when they have a full bar and have live, local music, how could you resist? Maybe I always get burnt by my expectations. Maybe if I lowered the bar, I'd be happier, but I'd rather not lower something most people can already step over, okay?? First off - the parking is atrocious. It's a small lot that serves several businesses. With a little patience (and/or luck) you'll be able to get a good spot. That was my first spot of luck that day. They have a nice outside eating area, but the inside is quite small. Especially if you're moving around four of the tables for a local band. I loved the band, Tower 7, so really high marks on that. There were (maybe) 20 people in the restaurant when we got there, including a large group that had been served already. It took 10 minutes to even be acknowledged by the waitstaff, another 15 before I could see a menu, and even longer before the food came. Went during happy hour, but they are sneaky, so make sure you know what you order and check the bill. I ordered the Queso Fundido off of the happy hour menu, they stopped back 10 minutes later to 'confirm with chorizo, right?' I agreed because I hadn't paid attention. Turns out not so much, so I had to pay almost double. Grumbles. Food took forever. Wasn't that great. The margaritas were small (and expensive) but rather tasty. Finally, when I asked about the bill, the waitstaff was very hostile and made me feel like crap for even asking them to explain it. I'll go back to hear the band, but never again to order anything other than water.

We've been dining here since they opened and have dined at great restaurants in many states and countries. That being said, no bartender compares to the the thoughtfulness Oscar puts into his work. The two of us can walk in, Oscar will find us two seats at the bar, and have our regular drinks waiting for us, all with a smile and handshake! The food is always superb. It's always fun to dine at other restaurants to see if the staff can compare to El Callejon. We hope we can dine here for many years to come.

I went here with a friend - and the food was really REALLY good. I had the chicken in a chipotle sauce and my friend had the beef medallions - excellent choices which were recommended by our server. Even the salsa that came with the chips was amazing - very fresh, lots of veggies - and NO canned tomatoes (the real deal). Even the chips were homemade. We had the house margaritas which our server aptly pointed out that they were also made from scratch. So the key take away on El Callejon - the food is awesomely FRESH.

Just visited again; now they have Ballast Point Sculpin IPA on draft! My only complaint has now been resolved. Thanks, El Callejon! ___________________________________ I visited on the evening of Tuesday, December 28th 2010. I love the ambiance of the place: the physical layout, the tables, plates, silverware, etc... The clientele this night skewed to white, healthy and wealthy groups of 40 to 60 somethings who were a little loud due whatever they had been imbibing, but that's not a big deal to me. There were some squalling kids when we first arrived, but they either left or quieted down. The menu is quite large and has a pretty good number of dishes. Prices are a little on the high side, but not outrageously so. I'm a bit of a beer snob, so the only thing I saw on draft I might want was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Really? So close to San Diego and its embarrassment of brewing riches? Oh, well, I went ahead and ordered the SNPA. Oh, sorry sir, we're out of that one. So I had a Diet Coke. I loved the pico de gallo and chips that started things off - lots of onion and cilantro paired well with the crunchy, salty homemade chips. My companion had a quesadilla while I had the puntas de pollo. Both our meals were very filling - so much so that there was no room for dessert. The staff was attentive and friendly, one server even dropping by to comment positively on my Stone Brewing workshirt. I have no hesitation recommending this place and I make it a point to visit whenever I get down to Encinitas. A note to the management, though: get on the craft beer train!

Went for an event here and happy hour. Waiter gave poor service. He forgot to bring the food we ordered and then when we inquired he accused us of never ordering it! As if it's common for customers to just not order food at a restaurant. Then he didn't once offer to bring another round of drinks which is odd when you're sitting by the bar. We were sucking at ice cubes until we could get someone's attention. When the food came, it was pretty bad and neither of us finished our meal. We won't be returning. Even the chips and salsa weren't great.

No complaints! Tortilla soup is good and their pork carnitas is nice and tender, with lot's of flavor, unlike other places I've been to in the area. Their salsa is fresh with chunky tomatoes and not too salty. Service is good, but hard to tell bc it wasn't busy at the time, but will go back again to check out other items on the menu. Friendly and inviting.

Food fun and sun makes El Callejon a must for any afternoon. Mucho margarita Cadilac and Combo #1 with a green sauce chicken enchiladata tamal with pollo con mole and carne Asada taco. Count me in. This was filling and flavorful without breaking the bank. I love the patio reminding me of many little joints in Mexico. Feels as comfortable as home only with 60 other people in your kitchen. Enjoying my margarita while basking in the sun. What more could I ask for? I do love the sign saying "kids must remain seated at all times" I love rules... See you on my next roll through town.

This little treasure trove is nestled away in a tiny strip mall in Encinitas. The parking lot it small but I've always been able to find a spot. Their margarita menu is epic, and I have trouble deciding every time I go there. Last night my friend and I decided to split an appetizer as well, and settled on the avocado shrimp; two avocado halves filled with this delightful shrimp, onion, and tomato mixture in an unidentifiable but delicious sauce. The avocado was PERFECTLY ripe and delicious, and since my dining companion is from the midwest avocados are not always on the menu where he lives so I was delighted it was as good as it was. He ordered the sabana arriera, a sirloin steak covered in onion, garlic, peppers etc. I tried the chicken enchilada, pork tamale, and carne asada taco. I was super disappointed with the taco which was literally cubes of carne asada in a corn tortilla. No lettuce, no cheese, nothing. Just a boring, dry taco. The enchilada was good and I'm glad they let me sub red sauce for the green, but the tamale too was a little lackluster. Almost like we peaked too soon on the appetizer and only had downhill to go. The salsa was a refreshing change of chunky goodness of tomato, onion, and cilantro. A nice change from the usual soupy tomato sauce salsa you get at a lot of other restaurants. I like the outdoor patio-style atmosphere (with heat lamps since it was a chilly night) and did I mention the margaritas? Yeah, they're awesome...

I love grilled green onions and they have them here! Cebollitas Cambray! Very family friendly, but good margaritas too for mom & dad. The food is more interior/tropical Mexican, so don't expect the more common SoCal Mexican fare. It's more banana-leaf wrapped tamales and mole sauce. For that reason probably it's a little more pricey, otherwise would be 5 stars.

The happy hour at El Callejon really is great. Cheap margaritas that are STRONG and chips and salsa that keeps flowing! The salsa is super spicy and I love that. There are also plenty of options for food on happy hour that is super inexpensive. The reason it lost the fifth star is because the food wasn't great. I ordered flautas and there was nothing special about them. Now part of that could be that I had to order with no cheese, so I'll give some credit there. But they were really dry. At the same time, they were like $3 or something so I can't really complain. By about an hour after happy hour started, the bar was full, so get there early if you want your pick of tables! Try it out though :)

My entourage arrived at this place this morning around noon. There were lines at other breakfast spots along the coast but this place had plenty of parking. We had this giant place to ourselves. It was great. Enjoyed the machaca con juevos and the pitcher of margaritas. The snapper ceviche looked good as did the other dishes ordered.

The colorfully-painted chairs, festive banners & lights, and the multi-levels -- some outdoors, some partially enclosed -- made it feel as if we were in Cabo. It offers a comfortable, casual, and fun atmosphere -- even more fun after drinks! The service -- from the greeting & seating by the hostess -- was friendly and attentive. We loved the thick, crunchy chips and fresh pico de gallo, as well as the cocktails (margaritas and Bloody Mary), which were very tasty, with some power (apparently, more than I originally gave 'em credit for, as I slept almost the entire trip back -- of course, I wasn't driving)! Our entrees (carnitas, as well as a shrimp in a garlic butter sauce), and our dessert (folded crepes covered with a generous helping of a warm, buttery caramel sauce) was great! This was our first visit; we're eager to return!

  • Lindsey C.

Their service is a little off, and some of the menu items are terrible, but their carnitas are insane. If you're vegetarian, try the chiles with a creamy cheese sauce.. rajas! Don't veer away from those two items unless you are looking for only one star. Trust.

  • Kelly V.

I had the sopes as an appetizer and I should have just stuck with those. I ordered the chicken mole and it was dry (they used chicken breast pounded flat, they definitely should have used dark me, duh) and the mole lacked the deep, developed flavor it should have had. My french mother makes a better mole. While our waiter was nice and attentive, he was definitely stretched in his section. There seemed to be no distinction between water glasses and my iced tea because they kept coming around and pouring water in my tea. I used to come camping in this area as a teen and this place used to be way better. No real desire to return.

  • T K.

Two stars for great outdoor patio and authentic Mexican decor...but my chicken tacos were the saddest, most pathetic looking things I've ever seen. Little dried up balls of what MAY have been chicken on a cold, crumbly corn tortilla. One bite and I was done. Rice and beans were okay...but not exactly a culinary challenge in terms of skill set requirements. Sucked during a hot day because the umbrellas couldn't quite cover us and the waiter literally moved our tables so my friend on my left was sitting 8 inches behind me and friend on my right 4 inches ahead...and two other friends forced to lean to side to avoid blazing sun. Very mediocre service. Oh - but damn good margaritas...

Ok, the main reason we come to this place is because of Oscar. It should be called Oscar's as this is his bar. He's such a great bartender, he takes care of his clients, gets to know them and pays attention to what's going on at his bar. He's got several followers and friends that come here because of him. Oh and thank goodness they finally figured out to get rid of those thick greasy chips and go with the thin ones!!! It's about time!

I am very sad to have to write this negative review but after too many disappointing meals I am compelled to share. My hope is that the management will take note and strive to improve rather than keep customers away. I've been patronizing El Callejon for many year and have no complaints about the food and drinks. This restaurant should not assume that serving tasty food is sufficient since there is significant competition at lower prices. The service leaves a great deal to be desired. At best, the service can be described as slow, inattentive and indifferent. Typically the chips and salsa arrive pretty quickly after you are seated. It takes an extended period of time to place a drink order. By the time the drinks arrive you're ready to order food and have to fight for the server's attention in order to do so. Someone else serves the food and call me high maintenance, but the server never returns to find out if everything is satisfactory let alone whether you need something additional. The wait for your check is also longer than customary and will for me, always affect the gratuity. Unless the management attends to the poor service it is likely that I will either resort to take out (you won't receive the benefit of my ordering a drink or leaving a tip), or just going elsewhere. I would rather not say adios, but it's up to you!

The reviews on Yelp are all over the place for this joint and I now I understand why. The margs we had were ok, but nothing special. Not one person in our party of 5 thought their good was good: chicken, steak, fish tacos all VERY bland. Shrimp cocktail was more soup with small shrimp than what one typically expects. Chips, salsa, and guac were decent. Unlike some of the reviews, we actually had good service. Friendly, prompt, etc. I had concerns about this place after reading several reviews. I don't like bashing places and that's not the intent at all. But I'm giving this a low rating because that's the reality of the situation.

Mexican sounded good on a Sunday afternoon after the beach, but this place was a disappointment. First of all, they serve the least flavorful fish tacos I've ever had. Really bland. Then we had Ensalada del Mar, which came with a thin piece of salmon that's been overcooked to death till it became dry and leathery. Again, no flavor! The rest of the salad was McDonalds quality lettuce/tomato/crouton combo all looking like it's seen better (fresher) days, but at a $15 cost. I don't see myself going back.

The service is fantastic, the food is delicious, and the margaritas are even better. The service is so prompt that I didn't even have time to think about how hungry I was before I was satisfied. I highly recommend this restaurant to anybody who wants good Mexican food.

One of my local favorites since moving to North County 5+ years ago. Atmosphere and full of locals - Check. Authentic and homemade everything - no tex-mex or surfer dude food - Check. Amazing carnitas that make your mouth water - Check. Enormous tequilla selection and authentic Margs with lime juice - Check. Oscar the man, the myth, the mullet slinging drinks at 100 MPH and always making you feel welcome - Check. (Th only downfall is that it is so great that it is always busy on the weekends. Go during the week and be treated to VIP service and no waits)

Been going here for many years. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and always loved how authentic the food was. That can't be easy being in business north of the border because they basically have to cater to american tastes as well. They do a great job. Margaritas are not the typical mix out of the bottle and some cheap tequila. They are the real deal. Lime juice, with your choice of tequila, and the appropriate amount of triple sec or other to give the right amount of sweetness or sourness. I used to work in bars so I know how an authentic margarita should be made. Just ate there again last nite and left happy again. It was very busy so the service was a little slow. For that inconvenience I was offered a free margarita and a song from the Mariachi trio that always plays there. Highly recommend if you want authentic Mexican food in a casual atmosphere with fair prices!

A friend and I dropped in here on a Friday afternoon in search of a libation that would take the edge off of a rather stressful week. Parking was a bit of a challenge, but not surprising given the location and small parking lot. After some patience, we found an available space. We were seated promptly, which was a good thing since we were on a tight schedule. Orderd two margaritas, one blended and one on the rocks. They were decent, but I've defintely tasted better. A bit watered down and not very sizeable. The complimentary chips and salsa were mediocre. Why the 2 stars? Well, the waiter seemed miffed that we were only having drinks. I'm not sure why that was the case, especially since it was Happy Hour. Nevertheless, it made me feel uncomfortable. The bill came to a little over $20. Seemed a bit pricy for just two small cocktails. Oh well...

my favorite place to go for margaritas! they are the best. We usually order appetizers - the queso fundido con rajas is awesome - especially with a little guacamole. I am not a meat-eater but have heard great things about their chipotle dishes.

We frequent El Callejon often. Where is Oscar for Taco Tuesdays? The prices are good and so is the food. But, the service was lacking in the bar. When Oscar is there everything runs smoothly. But, last Taco Tuesday it took three attempts to get a house margarita with no salt not a difficult order! My food order was wrong as well. They were very kind and adjusted the bill to make up for the errors. On as busy a night as Taco Tuesday Oscar would make the experience great!

Visiting the San Diego area i was really looking forward to Mexican food. Based on 4 out of 5 stars we chose this place. We should have read the reviews. Chips and salsa were awesome! Cilantro soup was ok. It would have been better as a sauce served with chicken or fish. The enchiladas were nasty. Chicken and verde sauce were flavorless. Mole sauce was very sweet. The cheese enchilada tasted really funky. It was a hunk of cheese wrapped in a tortilla and slightly warm. Carne asada was bland and oily. Unfortunately it was too early for a margarita. It may have made the experience less disappointing.

Last time I was here was about 1993 when this place was called "Taco Auctioneers" and there was nothing else around, no strip mall...nothin'! Well, this place has grown significantly and is definitely a "destination" Mexican restaurant for many people. Crowded and convivial, we were seated in about 10 minutes on a Saturday night. Strolling mariachis were a nice touch. Really enjoyed my aguacate torta. Wife liked her asada quesadilla. Would definitely come back the next time I'm in the area! Parking was tough after 7:00 p.m.

DON"T order the fish tacos! my wife and I went for taco Tuesday and I got two $2.50 baja fish tacos and two adobada street tacos. The fish slivers were a joke,,, each fish tacos had what looked like an medium sized onion ring sliced into two halves. Two tomato wedge and some cabbage... Not only was there very little fish it tasted very fishy... The little street tacos were good, and my wife's Raja's taco's were excellent. Here Daiquiri was tasty but $7.00... The main entrees on the menu are very over priced.... I would not recommend this place.

What better place to be on a long Labor Day weekend than El Callejon. I've enjoyed many a happy hour at the Vista location, so I figure this location one block or so from the beach would be just as good. WRONG! I planned to spend the rest of the afternoon, sipping on happy hour margaritas until sunset. Did anyone greet me at the door? No! Did anyone direct to me to a table? No! Ok. No problem. I decided to sit my ass down at what appeared to be a nice location to enjoy these delicious margaritas - the patio. It's a nice sunny day and the ocean breeze feels so good, where would YOU want to sit? I waited and waited for someone, anyone, to wait on me. No one came by. I decided to walk to the bar and order my drinks. No problem. I order two margaritas. I pay with cash. So....why does it take the bartender 15 minutes to break my $10 dollar bill?! Whatever. I wait. get my change, leave a tip and return to my seat at the patio. I'm in the middle of my drink and what happens. A nice young man arrives at the table, brings me water, chips, and salsa. This looks like it's going to be a nice afternoon. Enter Chris. The restaurant manager. Chris comes over to apologize to say the patio is closed. "Closed?" I ask. "Why would you close the patio on this beautiful day?" He tells me that "if you sit on the patio, other people are going to want to sit on the patio." WTF!? Of course other people want to sit on the patio on this beautiful sunny day near the beach! Why would this guy want to dissuade me from sitting at the patio? Is he stupid? Incompetent? If I had a bar/restaurant I would absolutely want people to sit on the patio so others could see that this place rocks and one should come here to enjoy happy hour. Instead, this idiot wants the patio closed. If this were MY restaurant, this guy, Chris, IS FIRED! Restaurant Management 101: 1.) Someone should have greeted me at the door and directed me to the area where they want me to sit. 2.) The restaurant manager should have closed off the patio IF HE DIDN'T WANT ANYONE TO SIT ON THE PATIO! 3.) If Chris wanted me to move, he should have had his waiter move my stuff (water, chips, salsa, drink) to another table instead of having ME move all this myself. 4.) If Chris had ANY restaurant management experience AT ALL, he would have offered me a free drink, moved my stuff, and all would have been forgotten. Instead, Chris demonstrated POOR customer service and, in my opinion, SHOULD BE FIRED for lacking the basic competence to manage a restaurant. If I ran El Callejon, I would FIRE CHRIS and replace him with someone who knows what's up and how to treat customers. There are hundreds of choices for happy hour and Mexican food in San Diego. As long as Chris is manager at this particular location, I WILL NOT COME BACK. Note: It may be 10 degrees hotter than Encintias, but the staff at the Vista El Callejon is TOP SHELF! Every time I visit the Vista location, I have chips, salsa, water, a drink, and a warm welcome within 5 minutes after sitting my ass on the warm patio chair. To the Vista El Callejon - THANK YOU! I shall return. To the Encintias El Callejon - BOO! HISS! FIRE CHRIS!

We wanted Mexican food within walking distance but also wanted the sit-down experience, so that pretty much left us with El Callejon and we enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere is right in line with what I expect from a slightly-upscale Mexican joint : expansive, casual & noisy in a festive sense. The free chips and salsa were delivered immediately and tasted fresh. I'm not much of a drinker so I can't comment on quality of the margarita's but they seemed strong. They have a very large menu with many options. The only thing negative is that when you pile rice and beans on a plate, it seems like you're getting a lot of food, but I would've liked the actual meat portion to be a little bigger. Things we tried: carne asada (was good - just wish portion was bigger) & cochinita pibil (the flavor was nice but the pork was a little dry).

Helpful friendly staff and great ambiance. Quick to get a table even though it seemed busy. Large selection of tequila and good authentic Mexican food. As most places, free chips and salsa but the salsa could be better. Building is very cool and look likes it has some big party's on certain nights. Right on the main drag and the parking lot could be a little bigger otherwise nothing but praise.

Best Mexican food in north county. Best margaritas in the entire county. And nicest atmosphere - in the outdoor dining area of any restaurant around the area. Cochinita y pibil is my favorite Mexican dish in earth and they do it right. You can still taste the orange:). We don't live in north county anymore and I miss that food and atmosphere.

Must do happy hour here! Cheap, strong margaritas and really fresh chips and salsa. All you need!

I used to work at el callejon! Best margs in town, hands down! Best carnitas, too! Try the parillada, the puntas Oscar (chicken in a cheesy chipotle sauce), or the pastor tacos.....chips, salsa, guac, rajas, quesadillas, caldo de pollo (chicken soup), and the ensalada mixta w house vinaigrette are all yummy!! Their rice and beans are spot on as well- very well seasoned compared with the bland junk you get at other mex restaurants....if you know what to order, you won't be disappointed here!

Went for lunch today. Had two very good margaritas, to appetizers, excellent. Their chips and three salsas were outstanding. I will go back!

After writing my first review, I was truly disappointed by El Callejon. Mainly because the service here was just horrible, but the food is really good. With this said, the owner actually contacted me (to my surprise) and encouraged me to go and revisit their restaurant, assuring me that he had changed a lot of things for the better. It took me awhile to decide if I really wanted to do this at all. Let's be honest I had tried them a lot of the years and really had a tainted point of view. My husband and I decided that we would go visit them on the weekend (when it's busy) to really see had their true customer service is. We made a reservation (thank god), because it gets busy any where in Encinitias on the weekend. We were seated out on the back patio area. The table we had was kind of weird. The only way you could sit was next to each other, which isn't a problem, you just face out towards everyone (it was just kind of odd). But we had good entertainment, do to an over excited husband. I decided that if we are going to retry a place, I'm going to try everything. Everything from drink to dessert. Our waiter came in a timely manner (which was the first improvement), and Javier was very friendly. He up sold us like any good waiter and took our drink order well, we figured out what to have for apps and dinner. I got the mango chili marg (which is an OMG factor) and my husband got their house marg. They were both very good. After looking at the menu for a little bit I noticed my husband had one set of price and I had another set of prices for our menu. Meaning that my mine was way cheaper then his was, by almost a $1 or $2. We told the waiter about it and he said he would look into it, but never got back to us. (Truly it didn't bother us, but I could see someone making a huge deal about this in the future). We got our app in a timely manner, we had the avocado with shrimp. It was alright there seemed to be a lot of mayo with the shrimp salad they made. The only thing that bothered me was we weren't half way through our app, when our entrees came out. So we had to let our food sit for a little bit and get cold. For the entrees we decided to order Camarones al Chipotle o Cilantro and carne asada plate, both were fantastic. We actually decided to not order dessert, because honest I could not anymore after all we had. Overall though I would have to say our experience was much better than the last few times we had been there. The customer service is much better and would suggest people to come back here. The only thing is that you should make a reservation on the weekends because it does get quite busy there.

Gotta give this place some love, they still doing it right. Been coming here for years, but much more in the recent months. Always the most friendly and helpful service ever! We love tequilas and they have the best selection around. My new fav is the El Agave Extra Anejo, aged 5 years and excellent all by itself. Carnitas is still my go-to menu item, never a disappointment. Don't pass this place up!

I may sound like your mom when I say this but don't fill up on the chips. I have to say it though because the chips at El Callejon are the best you'll find anywhere. You won't be able to help yourself from spoiling your appetite! I can't say enough great things about this place. The ambiance is wonderful with the open air seating and you will never drink a better margarita. The staff is always ultra-friendly as well which makes coming to El Callejon time after time that much more pleasant. We like to order the Parillada platter which comes with pollo, carnitas, and carne asada to fix our own tacos with all the fixings; corn and flour tortillas, guacamole (excellent!), onions, cilantro, rajas, beans, rice... and anything else you could possibly want. It is way more than enough for two people, plenty for three, and probably just enough for four. The taquito appetizers are amazing and their ceviche is also a great option for a lighter meal. If you don't mind some spice, I urge you to order a side of the Rajas; sliced roasted poblano chili peppers in a creamy cheese sauce... there are no words to describe how fantastic they are. They will blow your mind. Thank me later.

Came here for lunch on a beautiful sunny day! Name a tequila and they'll probably have it up on their wall. Sat at the bar, ordered a couple of cadillac margaritas (strong drinks) and food. Great environment and fun staff. Had carne asada, al pastor, and shrimp tacos. Meat was very tender. Al pastor tacos were my favorite. The shrimp is in a tomato and bell pepper sauce, also very good. Sooooo apparently when I was carded they actually looked at my license and brought out a little surprise for me. Along with our check they brought out a caramel flan with a candle most unexpected bday shot...a "puppet shot" as they call it, tequila and sprite. They bang the shot glass on the table 3 times with a napkin over it, the waiter puts it in your face and makes you take the shot, then he uses the napkin to wipe your face. Nice!

Margaritas are awesome - strong....tons of different types of tequila, so quality is always good! They're food is authentic, always fresh, and the best! I love their soups, salads, and seafood....they're menu is very extensive! P.S. for some reason, this location is better than Vista - always consistent - always better! Vista fails me too many times....I recommend taking the extra few minutes to go to Encinitas, so you won't regret it!

Happy hour at the bar is top notch. Cheap and strong makes for a great value, and the service was perfect. Chips and salsa immediately on the table. Roxy had the apps and drinks on the table in a flash. She was extremely helpful with the menu, pretty much holding down all the bar tables no problem and still made time to entertain...no sweat! Happy hour boasts $3.75 margaritas that will blow your socks off after 2 or 3 depending on wieght. Happy hour is 4-7pm Mon-Sat and 3-7pm on Sun...just cross your fingers and hope that Roxy is there for the primo service.

Love the atmosphere! Very authentic (when one of us asked for Nachos the waiter gave him a funny look) and great tasting but probably not the healthiest food! The house margarita, blended, is the best so ignore all the fancy ones on the menu!

We went here today for appetizers and margaritas. They make a real Mexican margarita. 100% agave tequila, fresh lime juice and controy. The guacamole is always yummy here. I had the shrimp and lobster cocktail and it was like I get in Mexico. Other time I have had their queso con rajas. It is Bernard's anything there with pork is great. They also do a traditional Oaxacan tamale which are my favorite. I always get them when I am in Oaxaca recipe. It has a little soy in it believe it or not!

Excellent food with lots of dishes not found in typical Mexican spots. Fun atmosphere with families and good selection at the bar. Parking is tough on a busy weekend, however it was well worth the walk through downtown Encinitas!

More casual vibe compared to the Vista El Callejon. Ate outside for lunch and it while it was good, it was missing some of the refinement of the Vista location. The patio was packed, which may have impacted some of the service. Food is good and the Margaritas are strong. A winning combination. Read my Vista Review for pictures of the food. Know this. - Come here if you are looking for a date, go to the Vista location if you want to take a date to a nice dinner.

I am sitting at the stop light at Encinitas blvd writing this. My wife and son and I walked in for lunch. The sign said happy hour. When we were seated in the empty dining room they said happy hour was only in the bar. The left bar had no empty tables. The right bar told us to go to the left bar. The hostess said we had to wait. I asked if she would rather serve us happy hour in the restaurant or no business at all. She said we should wait. Nice problem solving skills and customer satisfaction. We wont be back ever.yes I am still hungry. I've eaten here before and was un impressed by food or service

Margaritas are the BOMB! Ask for their special salsas, off - menu specials and if you are a fan of a delicate flan, this is it. Do not order "gringo" food here, as it will not be any different than anywhere else. Instead, try to break out and try the tacos adobado with the delicate mango salsa, the budget friendly Quesadilla Volcan and if you have any taste for spicier foods, try the cochinitas pibil or puntas albanil. For a five-star dinner, ask to see if they can prepare a a filete toluqueno. It's a flak steak, prepared and marinated in a combination of their salsas! Damn delicious. If you like tequilas, and I do, then this is a good place to be. Try a sangrita chaser to clean the palate. This place can get crowded and many folks bring younger kids, so if you want an adult time, make reservations and come later in the evening. Have a designated driver.

My husband and I came here because it was the only place that didn't have a long wait time on a Saturday night. We should have known why...it sucks! If this is how they do Mexican in North County, I'm never eating up there again! I ordered Lobster Tacos $13.99 which were horrible. You couldn't even taste the mini pieces of lobster because they were swimming in a gross tomato, pepper and onion stew. My husband got a combo that included a chicken enchilada, tamale and carne asada taco. The tamale was dry and gross and the enchilada was totally tasteless - it had no discernable enchilada sauce and the chicken tasted like it was boiled and shredded, no seasoning. Disgusting. The only redeeming quality this restaurant has to offer is their salsa. It was really good and spicy. Other than that, go somewhere else. Anywhere else.

After a nice day at the races, we stopped by for dinner. We are met by a very rude hostess, she tells us there will be a 20 to 30 minute wait for our party of six. This was puzzling to me as the restaurant was not busy and no other parties waiting. After about 5 minutes of waiting, a party of 4 walk in and this same very rude hostess seats then immediately,ok. A few minutes later another party of 4walks in and I can see she's going to seat them on the spot, so I step up and ask about our party of 6, she says " oh, your party is large, I need to get a table ready" and proceeds to seat the party of 4. She returns in a minute and says your table is ready. As I take my seat,I notice the whole dining area is set and ready for diners, hmmm. Ok, ready to relax, to order and enjoy! WRONG! The waiters seemed to be distracted and rushed in taking our order and when we got our food by a runner, what a disappointment!!! The food had no flavor and the chiles that my son and husband ordered, BURNT, it was so bad! There are so many restaurants choices in this area, sorry we will not be back! Next time, Taco Bell, it's better and we will save $100+$$$. Tired of spending my hard earned dollars on bad food and rude people!

Worst Mexican food I've had in a long time. First, it's expensive. $17 or $18 dollars minimum for most things that weren't appetizers. I was ready to leave because of the price point, but we were too hungry to go looking around for other places. The horchata was watered down. It just tasted like sugar and tap water. The refried beans were BURNED. What probably happened is they burned at the bottom of the pan/pot, then were mixed in with the rest of the batch. They were hard to eat. The black beans were fine but probably because they were canned and heated up. Enchiladas and quesadillas were made with mozzarella cheese. So, pretty much tasteless. For the quesadilla, it didn't even come with the standard toppings such as sour cream and guacamole, though maybe I dodged a bullet there because I can't imagine what kind of guacamole they must have had, given the quality of everything else. The enchilada sauce was more of a mole sauce. Also, they were made with hard corn tortillas that seemed to also be a bit stale. The rice was overcooked, with bits of hard rice in it. It tasted very bland. The chips were stale and greasy. The salsa was okay. When we asked for hotter salsa, we were given a chipotle salsa that tasted very smoky but not hot at all. Overall, especially for the price, a huge appointment. The happiest people seemed to be drinking, so maybe it's the place to go to for drinks or happy hour. Pass on the food completely.

First time dining here. Came for dinner on a holiday Monday night/President's Day about 6 p.m. It was about half full, not crowded. It filled up as we dined but the noise level was fine, if you don't count the trains that roared by two times, ha ha. The interior is like a patio of an outdoor mall, but the heaters made it very cozy. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food...REALLY good. I ordered enchiladas with the "Benito" chipotle sauce, which was SPICY but GOOD. BF ordered a beef tips dish called Puntos al Aranil, which is like a beef stew, and he also said it was very good. The chips were really good and the rice was very flavorful...two things that can be forgotten and bland in many restaurants. We both enjoyed it, this is a keeper!!

Margarita was strong and delicious. Service seemed upset we did not want to eat- which was off-putting- but I think we compensated with a great tip! Would like to come back but we will see how the other attendees feel. P.s. as an additional tip, be sure to check out all of the super awesome tequila bottles along the wall of the bar = )

Huh? OK, it has a great atmosphere. I love the indoor/outdoor patio and can see how it would be really pleasant on a summer day but the food. Meh. One word - bland. Red sauce=bland, empanadas=bland, flautas=bland. I was very disappointed. If you want to stop for chips, salsa and a margarita that's acceptable, but the food....not so great.

The food is good. I like their tacos. However, this is one of the only Mexican restaurants that charges you for salsa refills. You get one small container of salsa for the table and if you want another one, you will be charged $2.25 for another one. So better conserve it and do not finish it up with your chips if you plan to use it with your tacos or pay for it.

I came here last Sunday around 2 pm. We were a large group (four adults, seven kids) so I called ahead and they said they'd set up for us. They seated us right away, next to another large group. Otherwise the restaurant was fairly empty, maybe five other tables. Our waiter was very rushed. He was also serving the other big group, but they had already ordered when we were seated. He took our drink orders and I ordered only water which I didn't receive. Eventually my husband flagged him down and ordered a beer and a water for me. My beer came in a cracked glass. Our food was delivered by a runner and one of the kid's meals was missing. Our waiter never checked on us so kids ended up sharing the meals. Meanwhile the large group was getting lots of attention. There were two birthdays at it, so the waitstaff came out and sang TWICE while our drinks sat empty. My husband got up and ordered a margarita from the bar. Foodwise....the salsa is really good, the chips are thick and greasy, and the plates were mediocre. The kids' meals were supposed to come with ice cream and a churro. Our plates were cleared by a busser and after waiting for at least ten minutes with no waiter to be seen, my husband got up and found him SITTING DOWN in the kitchen. He asked for the kids' desserts at that point and they came pretty quickly. I don't know if we were charged for the missing kids' meal, or if gratuity was automatically included. The other adults figured out the bill while I herded kids out the door because we were all so tired of waiting. All I know is I'm never coming to this place again.

My wife and I have gone to El Callejon for years and have had great food and margaritas. We were there on Wednesday night, the 19th of February. There was a man there (Adam R.) with his 2 young boys, that just sat there , while his sons started blowing out candles. The father sat there and watched his kids doing this, like it was no big deal. The owner, Bernard, asked them to quit blowing out the candles and they continued to do so. Bernard told them a second time not to blow out the candles, but they did. Then, the father told them they didn't have to listen to the owner, because he was not their father. People let their kids run around there all the time, while waiters and bus boys constantly run into them. It was nice to witness a blatant lie, told by this man on Yelp. Bernard never told his kids he was going to spank them. He kept telling them not to, as their father sat there and watched them. It's time to watch your kids while they are not in your house. This is where the Yelp liars are completely busted. This was in response to the false review by Adam R. written a few days ago.

Their water tasted like bath water. The carnitas plate was greasy, but bland and the chips and salsa were no bueno. The chips were shiny and wet bc they were so filled with oil...the salsa was more water than salsa. The reason I give them 2 stars instead of 1 is the atmosphere and the bar itself. This is a good place to grab a drink, but I'd pass on the food.

I love this place. This is one of my favorite places for happy hour and to eat. The only reason why I gave 4 starts instead of 5 is that one of the waiters is a jack@$$!! He is actually the owners son which is surprising, he speaks to you in a normal voice, no accent, but the second he says a word with the slightest bit of Spanish connection, all of a sudden he sounds like he is in the middle of Mexico City! and you cant understand a word he says! That is not my problem with him at all, that is the humorous part about him, but he is very territorial about his tables and just a little moody and rude in my opinion. So we just request not to sit in his area now and everything is fine. I hope he improves his attitude, I hear the wait staff say that alot of people request not to be in his section. I still got here all the time, they have the best happy hour prices on beer and margaritas. Super strong drinks! Great food! The cilantro soup and avocado shrimp are to die for!!

Authentic Mexican food with excellent service. We have been dining at El Callejon for years and love the food and the atmosphere. Oh and the Margaritas are always superb, many tequilas to chose from. It is a little more expensive than your normal Mexican restaurant, and that is because it is not your normal Mexican restaurant. Highlights are: - the tortilla chips and salsa fresca are fresh, but the deep red sauce that you have to ask for is excellent - any of their dishes with sauces are recommended, the mole is superb as is their rajas. - the flan, the flan, the flan...never can get enough of the flan. Oh and the Mariachi trio is on fire ask them to play "Volver, volver"!!!

I came here for lunch because it is near my work. The chips and salsa were pretty good. However, I ordered a ceviche that was really less than impressive. I have had ceviche on several occasions, and this was by far the worst I have had. The ceviche was covered in some kind of thick red sauce that tasted like a combination of Pace salsa and ketchup. With this thick and sweet sauce, this particular rendition of ceviche was a lot heavier. It also lacked the freshness, acidity and lime flavor of other ceviches I have had. That being said, my friends ordered quesadillas and a carne asada burrito (I think) and there were no complaints. The good part was they participate in the restaurant.com deals, and I only paid $5 for the $10 ceviche. Otherwise it would have been REALLY disappointing.

Not impressed. I went here for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I found the surroundings to be kind of dirty and the food to be meh. My "lobster" tasted like mushy nothingness. It didn't taste like anything and was not the right consistency. I don't know if it was frozen or overcooked or spoiled or all of the above. The menu had spilled food and splotches of salsa all over it. I hate that. And the bathroom was really gross and there were no paper towels. I don't go to Encinitas very often, but it seems that there are probably much better options around there.

I tried this place for the first time about a month ago and I wouldn't go back. The food is HORRIBLE! I got cheese and chicken enchiladas and the sauce looked like it came out of a can. The beans weren't good either. My fiance got the Land & Sea which came with shrimp and steak. He said the shrimp was decent but there could have been more steak. It was a very small portion. Then the margaritas, these were probably the worst margaritas I've ever had. When we sat down I just ordered a regular margarita on the rocks and it was nasty. So, I ordered one of the specialty margaritas with some better tequila and it was a little better but still not that great. I'm not sure if it was their mix or what but how hard is it to screw up a margarita! Also, their prices are a bit high for mexican food. The Land and Sea dish was $19, seriously?! I guess if the food was good it would have been worth it but for $19, such a waste of $$$. I do have to say our server was nice, the food came out quick and the chips and salsa were decent. If you are in the mood for some good mexican food dont come here!

My wife and I go to dinner here at least 1-2x a month and love it. We always go for the 2 taco plate since it seems to be one of the better values on the menu, and the margaritas are nice and strong. The guac is delicious, we always order that to go with the chips.

Probably my worst meal of the decade, despite it being recommended by the locals as "the place to go". Hah! I don't give one star ratings without cause. The ambiance; dark, musty, plus being seated at a cramped table with a potted plant hanging over the table. The room was cold with ineffective space heaters. We had to light our own table candle, just to cheer up the place. The food; my crab enchilada was stone cold, the beans uninspired, and the salad terrible. On top of this, the crab was very fishy, meaning it had stayed in the kitchen too long for its logical shelf life. The lobster taco not good at all. The waitstaff; diffident and just plain lazy. I was given one glass of water, but after drinking it they never came back for a refill. WTF! Prices; too high for the mediocrity of the meal. They gave only 3 menu for six people. I had to wait my turn, and our waiter demanded "your order, sir", when I not even see the menu! And, only five silverware for the six of us. Really! All six of our party had some complaint about the food, so they were batting zero tonight. I wish I had my money back!! Yelp should have a zero rating, as this establishment does not even deserve one star.

This place is awesome! I love the happy hour which is 7 days a week and the best value for the money! The skinny margaritas are made aboslutely perfectly, and the Rajas is to die for! I love that they offer potato flautas and their chips are bomb diggity! I am a customer for life!

Hit or miss. My sister and I wanted to grab breakfast/lunch and a margarita (yes, I'm a lush). I ordered the machaca plate and she had the chicken enchiladas, one with green sauce and one with red sauce. The machaca was a little dry. Peppers and onions were scant, and I didn't think it was a very good value. My sister said that her enchiladas were...okay. Nothing to sing about, nothing to complain about. I've been here when the food is really good. I've been here when the food was ehhh, but 2 things that NEVER disappoint are the margaritas and the chips. I mean, holy cow...the freaking chips are the best chips ever. Seriously, they are too good to be true. The caveat is the salsa. Why?! Why can't the salsa be as good as the chips? It's tragic! That said, It is a great place to take out-of-towners. It's a great place to happy hour (7 days a week--yay!!!). The service is friendly, and they have a million tequilas to choose from. And I like the Queso Fundido, which is just a bowl of molten lava jack cheese. To summarize, give me margaritas, chips and queso fundido--and I'm a happy camper.

I was SUPER disappointed with this place after I heard nothing but good things about it. Its obvious to me that my friends were drunk, or on something when they told me about their experience when dinning here, LOL ....Where to start.. Didn't have to wait for a seat so that was nice. Was seated outside, perfect for a Sunny San Diego day. People who sat at the next table next to us were seated after us and was served before us. Waited for 10 mins before our waiter came and asked if we wanted anything to drink. My daughter and I finally ordered our food, and specifically order her food without certain items. When we finally got our food, the ONE thing she asked to not be on her plate was on it and ALL over it. We waited for a while and she decided to just to eat it, as we had NO IDEA where our waiter went to again. After about 30 mins or so he showed up again and asked why she didn't eat her food and if there was something wrong with it. I showed him that there was sauce all over it. He took her plate and went and got her a new one.. I order some rolled tacos, they were so hard and ummm sharp. Cut the inside of my mouth biting into one, true story.. The salsa sucked had no flavor. The chips were good..homemade. Beware of bathroom. I think an ARCO bathroom is cleaner then this. I was absolutely disgusted, I did NOT want to use the bathroom at all. For the area that this place is at I just assumed that it would be a little bit cleaner then most.. WRONG! I had to ask the bus boy for our bill, and so did the people next to us...not good. When I was paying my bill the waiter was hoovering over me as I was pulling my wallet out and watching me get, and counting my money. Kept asking me if I needed change. I finally said I'm NOT READY YET! I thought it was extremely rude. I will NEVER go back here agin.. I rather get Taco Bell and share stories with a run down hooker then come back to this place. =)

Came here for a work party so we had the entire lower back patio to ourselves. The outdoor heaters get a little hot so ask them to put the heaters towards the side. There is a catering menu with some options that you select from in advance. The food has great flavor without sodium OD. The pitchers of margaritas weren't too strong or too sweet. Perfect!

My husband and I Looooove to eat here! If your looking for a great atmosphere and some killer margaritas...this is the place to come! We order the tacos and it comes with a side of limes, cilantro and onion so that we can make it the way we want to. We also order a side of guacamole for a little extra taste. Outdoor setting with an authentic feel. Just perfect!

Well, where I do I start.. We have been to many Mexican restaurants. We know good Mexican food. But by far this is the worst Mexican restaurant we have ever eaten at. I should have known from trying the old, awful salsa that was brought to our table as the indication of what was to come.... The order of guacamole was overly salty, couldn't taste the avocado, the margarita was overly sweet -which possibly was to hide the tequila? Now the food- my husband ordered the combination poblano plate which is based on the menu description as :2 enchiladas 2- sopes- 2 tacos. He asked for all In beef. But what He received was 2 taquitos with chicken- 2 sopes beef as well 2 chicken rolled tacos with no melted cheese inside or out it was basically rolled soft taco! When he brought this to the waiters attention, the waiter said that was the style. I ordered - shrimp taco and a large Mexican chicken soup. All the food was extremely salty- in edible! And my shrimp was cold!Run from this place and save your money and run to Taco Bell!!

My husband and I have always enjoyed this restaurant. The food is always good and the staff is friendly and prompt. The noise level is active, but we could talk to each other, unlike several other restaurants that serve Mexican food. I would definitely recommend El Callejon.

Best Margarita anywhere, the food is also very good. The staff are very helpful and are very knowledgeable of all the many different tequilas. I would recommend either the camarones tocino or the pollo gratinada con salsa poblana. Substitute the beans for the rajas as a side order. There are loads of other good food choices. The staff are very personable. *True story, I had a man from DC sit next to me on a flight from NYC to Orlando who told me that the best margarita he had ever had was at a place at the corner of Encinitas Blvd and Coast HWY in North County San Diego.

I've been coming to El Callejon for years. About time I wrote a review... Where do I start? The bar feels like my living room. Great margaritas. I tried to get the recipe for their mix and only know it's Bols triple sec and real lime +???. Mix with tequila of your choice. Some of my favorites here include the pollo mole tacos, the coctel de camarones. And don't forget about the Rajas, guacamole, calamari..it's all good! And very friendly staff.

The Encinitas margarita is the best you will ever have. Expensive, but worth it. The chips and salsa are outstanding. They get very busy so the service can be spotty. The food is good, not great, particularly for SD. Recommend for drinks and chips.

El Callejon is a stand-out among the massive array of mexican food restaurants that can be found in North County San Diego. 1. The atmosphere is nice and very spirited. It definitely is representative of decor and environment one would encounter in a restaurant in Mexico(maybe a little exaggerated but you get the idea); you will love the outside patio and it does give that mexican feel they also have a small area inside but more for happy hour/lunchtime I feel... 2. service is good... very attentive 3. food is awesome... wide variety of dishes to try! I personally like the chicken tortilla soup but I have never had anything bad there 4. Drink menu is long! They offer a great variety of margaritas, including a Skinny margarita that is very delicious and not so strong that you feel like you are drinking straight tequila! **HAPPY HOUR STARTS AT 3 PM!!!!**** I feel those are the most important points of a restaurant so definitely go and enjoy the ambience and food! And the mariachis on the weekends!

i don't know what it was. . . yes the Margaritas are good. darn good- but they were $30/pitcher. Yes if you bought 6 drinks at $12 a pop it is cost efficient, but still we spent $75 on just liquor. Food was okay - had the sopas, el pastor taco - bf had mole - all Bleh-ok. I did like their chips- kinda like Chevy's. The waiter was a little interesting- maybe it was by friend is way too gorgeous and she was with her bf, but the waiter didn't even want to make eye contact. he told us the menu by looking straight into the bush/wall haha i hate to say it, and I don't want to kill the business because its drunk walking distance from my house- BUT the food isn't that good- and those that rate it quite high were probably drunk from the margaritas. sorry. but i has to be true. there is tendency for this place to be a family dinner spot, so beware of running children playing tag, and possibly screaming for some odd reason. next time we're grabbing a burrito from across the street for $4, then going straight to the tequila bar- then the night can tell us if we end up at La Paloma watching a movie, or getting our groove on in the blvd. NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE FOR SURE! so if ur looking for a litigious lawsuit- here's one laid out for you.

Great outdoor atmosphere although more pleasant dining on a warm day/night. They have an expansive menu with lots of choices. We usually order fish, and you get your choice of fish and preparation ingredients. Prices are good. We usually go with an Entertainment coupon for most bang for your buck. Parking can sometimes be limited, so avoid Friday & Saturday nights if possible.

The food portions here are a JOKE! I ordered a carne asada torta and received the smallest peice of carne asada ever, it was all bread. The menu said the torta came with beans. They need to rephrase that: it came with 1 bean!!!! Very disappointed with the portions...

I can never quite find what I want here. In many trips, I've tried various types of food but have always been a bit disappointed. The tacos are good but plain. I liked the carnitas, although they're nothing special, and I find the chicken to be a bit dry. I've also tried some of the "fancier" meals like puntas de oscar or fish, but wasn't impressed by them either. Today I decided to try chilaquiles for the first time, since their chips ARE good. I asked for both green and red sauce, which the waiter said they could do, but ended up with only red sauce, which was kind of irritating. Anyway, the serving is on the small side and is really just chips with some red sauce, chicken, crema and cheese - fine, but not too exciting. It came with refried beans and rice. I tried some black beans too, and they were completely bland - I poured some salsa in and then they were fine, but why have black beans with no seasoning?! To add to the suboptimal experience, our waiter was really overattentive - which was nice when getting a quick refill on a soda, but annoying when he tried to take away every single person's plate before any of us were finished! Their catering service is pretty good - we had them for our rehearsal dinner and all our guests were quite happy with it. In fact, they served one of my favorite things I've had from there - the azteca tamale pie, which was delicious!

The atmosphere makes this restaurant - tastefully done with an open-air ambiance, optimizing our wonderful coastal San Diego climate. Weekend evenings are busy, but reservations are not necessary. Chic-casual with many walking-in off the beach during summer. Pricey, but high quality entrees. Ideal date or group dinner place.

The funny thing is that I'm usually here only for Happy Hour. Happy Hour is simply just that given their good margaritas and array of tequila if that's your thing. However, for the longest time I had never had a meal here - until today with coworkers. At Deana's advice, I ordered the lobster tacos. Although I showed up late to lunch, service was quick. Staff was attentive and my lobster tacos, rice and beans and tortillas was tasty. Perhaps my mood and its speed of delivery contributed to enjoying the meal. Who knows? But in my mind, EC is more than just Happy Hour.

Excellent, authentic mexican restaurant! Before yesterday's dinner there, I would've given it 5 stars. The first time I visited this place, I ordered a Torta Sandwich and I was EXTREMELY impressed! It was just so incredibly delicious. I've been talking about this place for months since then, and my boyfriend finally took me again last night (he's not a big fan of Mexican food). We got there just before Happy Hour ended, so we quickly grabbed a Margarita. I'm not a big fan of Margaritas usually because most places use Sweet & Sour, but they use real lime juice here, which makes a HUGE difference. The hostess was very friendly & helpful. I like the seating in this place (sort of 1/2 indoor & 1/2 outdoor). It kind of makes you feel like you could be in a restaurant in Mexico. The chips are authentic & the salsa is A-MAZINGLY fresh and flavorful! I love that it's chunky. Our Margaritas tasted super strong, so we sipped them slow. We were starving & got our appetizer (Orden De Rajas) in. It came with tortillas. It wasn't really what I was expecting, but not in a bad way. It was little strips of cooked poblano peppers in a liquidy cheese sauce. Appetizers are usually so huge & too filling, but this was the perfect portion size for two-four. Our server was great & I enjoyed that he used some Spanish. I happen to understand a little with some college Spanish under my belt :) For dinner I almost ordered the Sabana Arriera (which I now wish I had), but I went with the Cambinacion #1 (Chicken Enchilada, Tamale, Carne Asada Taco) instead. Sadly, I was really disappointed. The verde sauce on the enchilada was delicious, but it was a little dry. I like cheese in my enchiladas... I should ask for it next time. The carne asada was tasty, but the taco was so plain (nothing but meat & tortilla). Most disappointing was the tamale. I LOVE tamales, and this one was so very dry & overcooked. I couldn't even eat it. Thankfully my appetizer was good, so I picked at the rest of my dinner. My boyfriend had the Volcan plate. He said he liked it (although he didn't eat it all). By now I was ready for another Margarita. We were joking about the really nice tequilas they carry (one of them is $250 a shot!!) and decided to get one each since we were celebrating my birthday. The cheapest we saw was $20 per shot, so we were going for it! This is where the server really impressed us - he said they actually have another one that's better, but not on that menu & it was cheaper ($11/shot)! You expect servers to upsell as much as possible. He had the opportunity & decided to be honest & helpful instead! We ordered those (I can't remember the name, but it actually kind of tasted like Patron, which was fine), and a couple of their traditional Margaritas. To top off our lovely night, the Mariachi band (hired by the restaurant) finally made their rounds & stopped at our table. One of them asked me what I wanted to hear (upbeat or romantic) and I told him to suprise me. They played a wonderful (upbeat) song that really made the whole experience so fantastic. I might start planning a trip down south sometime soon!

This place has taken a serious dump the last year or so. I don't know when it jumped the shark, but the last few times I've been there, the food and service has been bad. I used to love the food here, but the last few times it's been pretty flavorless and salty. Things have gotten a little disorganized. The service always seems rushed and not that great. I've been getting the tacos al pastor or shrimp fajitas for years, but the recipes have changed. I'm sad, because I really liked the food here, but it's gone way downhill.

So, I've only ever been here for happy hour in the bar. BUT IT IS AMAZING! I've actually been infrequently visiting this place for a couple of years now (driving down from LA for some happy hour!) El Callejon serves my favorite margarita in California. It tastes super fresh and DANG it is strong! They have a vegetarian menu which is super cool :) The rajas are incredible, you must try them. The chips are legit and the pico de gallo is perfection. On the other hand, I'm not super crazy about their red sauce(green is better imo) and the potato flautas are good but I'm pretty sure I can make better. Don't get me wrong, I always LOVE my food here. Like, really love it. It's just not a "last meal" type of relationship. Worthy of 5 stars for sure.

El Callejon has some of the best Mexican food in town. It is different from the greasy stuff you are used to...you know, enchiladas caked in cheese and grease. They have a wide variety of fish dishes, awesome tacos (try the el pastor tacos with pineapple, onions, and cilantro), etc. Also, their salsas are all homemade and delish. Great atmosphere and flippin' good (and strong) margaritas. The owner is hands on and is usually around to keep an eye on things. We have been going here for years and will continue to do so.

    (5)
  • Brian P.

Almost all the food here is insanely good. The cilantro sauce is delicious, even to just dip the chips in but salsa is good as well.. every once in a while the food comes out lukewarm- i assume its because they get so busy and are understaffed. The chilaquiles are delicious and theres really not much that you can possibly go wrong with on the menu, but watch out for the margaritas- they are VERY strong even though they dont taste like it..

Is this part of the country, it's safe to say that a Mexican restaurant won't survive a couple of years unless it's good. And of course, some dishes are just dishes and you can get the same thing elsewhere. So don't order the usual. In fact, rajas orden is required eating. I haven't found them on any other menu. I like ordering and eating them with other foods. Pibil is also quite delicious. We sent back the corn for flour tortillas out of habit, but it might've been a mistake. The corn were pretty good also. It'd be easy to weigh 338 lbs. if we ate here regularly. Go on, you know you want to eat here.

I would say that this place is just OK. The food is kinda pricey but the atmosphere is nice. Service is good. And I like the outdoor patio. I had the pork taco and it was good but only one for 12.00 and did not care for the black beans it came with.

I would have to say that this is my favorite "sit down non-dirty" Mexican restaurant. I'm giving it 4 stars because the food is great tasting, but the service has a lot to be desired. My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner here before our wedding. We had some communication issues with the management setting it up and making sure we got the correct items that we wanted to have on the pre-set menu. We've also had other service issues with waiters ignoring requests and forgetting about you altogether, and the plate meals are pretty darn expensive (Carnitas for $18), but we always use an entertainment coupon when we go so we can't really complain about that. Anyway, for the food, I've had the carne asada, the flautas, the sopes, the street tacos and the carnitas. All are top notch. The salsas could be better, the pico is too citrusy, but the food itself more than makes up for it. If you go here you HAVE to try the "rajas" which are green peppers sauteed in some kind of cheese sauce. They come as a side dish to some the plates or you can order them in tacos. They are a must have here.

Where else can you find mariachi in North County? Love it! The chips and salsa are yummy and the margaritas are strong. Good selection of tequilas. The food is somewhat Americanized but decent. A repeat customer.

My wife and I enjoyed a simple dinner at El Callejon while on vacation. The food was authentic, fresh and reasonably priced. We enjoyed a Spanish white wine that was also well priced. The place gets crowded, but not too loud, creating a festive atmosphere. Service was excellent. Highly recommended.

This was a surprise find near our hotel. We got there an hour before they closed and just kinda wandered around til someone told us we could sit anywhere. I just wish our waiter was more focused on his tables as opposed to the gal at the bar. Parking wasn't an issue, the food was good, there was a band playing some good tunes. Overall good vibe. I probably should learn not to indulge on the chips and salsa before our meals show up but the salsa was just right. I had the enchiladas, I ordered chicken, got cheese didn't have the energy to complain, it was getting late, I was hungry I knew they were getting ready to close. I could have been bitchy but considering the Cubs just beat the Padres and I was still wearing Cubs shirt.....meh...I'll pass.

Best happy hour in Encinitas. Don't pass up the skinny margaritas, just as good as the house! Food is fantastic, service is great. We have made this a bi-weekly stop for the last 15 years.

Went there 1st time last night for a birthday celebration. Liked everything about this place: food, margaritas, ambiance, the Mexican guitar players. I had the carne asada place on recommendation from Matt. Very tasty . Reminded me of Cafe Familiar down on Revolucion. Maybe a little pricey would be my only critique. My dish was about $18. But all in all I'd definitely return.

I have a long-standing love affair with this restaurant. Been going with regularity since 2005. It is truly one of the best tasting Mexican food restaurants around. I usually start the weekend off here with happy hour and some drinks and appetizers and then an entree. I'm a fan of the margaritas which they make their own mix fresh with lime juice, triple sec and tequila. I've been to both locations Vista and Encinitas and the Encinitas ones are stronger!! If you haven't tried Rajas it is sooo good. It's an appetizer that has cheese, poblano peppers and onions. Served with warm tortillas it hits the spot. Some of my favorite entrees are the carnitias (but ask for them marinated in chipotle sauce), and the Salmon with chipotle sauce (can you tell I'm a chipotle nut?). Also the puntas al albanil is most excellent. Definitely a favorite place of mine you should visit it sometime for a good meal.

I really like this place. Maybe .. I am biased because after two margarita's I could give a hoot about what I am eating?. This place gets 5 stars because they know how to make a Margarita. Get a cab in gear if you plan to drink 3. No really.. they have good food. The tamales, shrimp dishes and combo plates are super.

Happy hour that makes you really happy! They now have happy hour 7 days a week... so we took advantage and went on a Sunday. A fun place to watch the games in the bar, and great deals on drinks and food. Try the calamari with the homemade sauce - it's awesome. We will definitely go back for dinner again.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to review El Callejon because we eat there at least 3 times a month. Sometimes the service can be spotty, but the food is so good that it makes up for it. It is on the pricey side for a Mexican restaurant but when you go there and look at the menu, you will see why. The menu has several seafood dishes, which I love. Order the camarones which are HUGE amazing shrimp. I always order them El Limon style which is to die for. The menu has more of an authentic Mexican style then most other Mexican restaurants which seem americanized. I also love the atmosphere here because the restaurant is half inside and half outside. Best chips and salsa - you can tell the salsa is made fresh here. Best house margaritas here too! The only reason I don't give the place 5 starts is because the service can be spotty. Sometimes they are totally right-on and other times your server can be missing in action. But we are Encinitas locals, this place is less than 2 miles from our house. We like the food, atmosphere and margaritas so much that we will keep going back!

Had a very small meal here by myself so maybe I am not qualified to give a really informative review, but here it is: charming mexican decor, very colorful but not cheesy. I went there for lunch, service was very attentive. It is a fairly large restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating options. I had cream of cilantro soup which I have never seen on a Mexican menu and it was delicious. I asked the waiter about it, and he explained the menu is true to Oaxacan cuisine which includes this type of soup. He went on to tell me some customers are shocked not to see burritos on the menu but as burritos are not eaten in Oaxaca, that's the way it is! I like to see a restaurant that's true to it's roots and not a sellout to popular conceptions. Can't wait to go back again with friends and sample more menu items.

I spent Cinco De Mayo with a group of friends here and we had a great night (what we can remember anyways.) The chips and dark red salsa are great but the rajas plate is where its at. Great place to spend the evening if you want a stiff drink and good food. I will definitely go back here and sip on a few margaritas during happy hour.

Who can go wrong with strong Margs, pitchers of those previously mentioned Margs and a great happy hour to get more for your money!?! Did happy hour/dinner here last week. The margaritas, chips and salsa are super tasty. I ordered the Pollo combination with 2 rolled tacos with mole, 2 chicken sopes and 2 chicken enchiladas, I don't think I ordered well, I need more spice and the dish was pretty mild...my bf on the other hand ordered the Medallions al la Cilantro and was in heaven. The service was great, our waiter was dealing with a few drunk parents and their friends as well as myself and the bf, and kept it together the entire time (even when there was confusion on whether another pitcher of margs was needed). He even came out to tell my mom she had paid him too much (gratuity was included and we had a coupon so we tipped on top of the bill) and he came out to the street to get her to sign the tab correctly! I mean have you ever heard of such a thing?! We are definitely coming back!

Been 3 - 4 times. Always sat in the bar, which, by the way, needs to be larger to accomodate the bullrush they get at happy hour. Wait staff - especially during happy hour are overwhelmed - they work their asses off.. Margaritas? Authentic. Tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. No mixes, no watered down stuff. They are taaaaasssstttty. Oh, and, try not to go during happy hour though, just 'cause I need a place to sit!

This is a bar. As a bar, it has good drinks. Not the best, but strong and not terribly expensive. The food, no matter what anyone tells you, is total garbage. It would be good if it were cheaper, but you are paying 10 to 15 bucks for a two tacos with a little beans and rice that doesn't taste very good. The salsa and guacamole are subpar. You are better off going down the street to Kotija or one of the infinite number of Mexican places (I recommend Tony's Jacal in Solana Beach). However, the location is great. A stone's throw away from the beach. So get loaded on Margaritas (the current record for Margaritas imbibed by a single person is 16) and come with a group. .

Not really that impressed. Service was somewhat rude (certainly not friendly) and slow for a Sunday night. Food was mediocre. We had a group of 10 adults, 1 child, 1 infant. Got there 15 minutes before happy hour ended but for some reason they wouldn't honor happy hour prices at our table- told us that was only at the bar which we could have walked into to get a drink and brought back out to our table so not sure why they wouldn't accommodate us at the table but whatever. Our waiter was rushed and unfriendly. He didn't even bring us enough menus. We probably had 5 menus for the 10 adults and children's menu was not automatically brought out either though it was obvious our party had children! I thought the chips were pretty fresh but didn't care for any of the salsas. The hubs and I both ordered enchiladas- mine with red sauce and his with the chipotle sauce. We both thought our meal was just OK. It was lacking some flavor and certainly the service and ambiance coud be improved. I'm not rushing back here. It's just ok. The hunt continues around for good, robust flavored Mexican food.

I come here every few months when I am in the mood for carnitas (pork). I have tried a few of their other dishes, but the carnitas and the salsa with tortilla chips are the real stars here. Anything else you order may be okay, but I have yet to try anything I liked more than the carnitas. Oh, the margaritas are delicious too. The only thing that can get annoying is drunk gringos requesting the same songs over and over from the mariachi band. I swear I heard La Bamba three times one night. Hehe.

Delicious pork in my torta but not enough of it. The fries were pretty good, but I would have preferred something not so American to complement the torta. I loved the outdoor patio seating. But, the food was too average for the price. Not sure I'd return.

Ok two things since everyone else has pretty covered it all. 1) I come only for Happy Hour and have only eaten happy hour food. I love the fried Chorizo quesadilla. 2)SET YOUR HAPPY HOUR MARGARITA LIMIT TO 3. . You will not make it past 8 PM if you do not heed this advice.

What a great place! Fun food and lots of it. Bartenders are great, but Daniel is the guy. Great selection of tequila, and my wife prefers these margs to almost anywhere. Good appetizers. Becoming the place to frequent often.

My favorite mexican restaurant in North County. Ultra high-quality and unique. The margaritas are fantastic (stick with the house with salt on the rocks and you'll be more than fine) and the food is mexican as good as you'll get anywhere. For dinner, the queso rajas appetizer is great and the Puntas Oscar (chicken in cheese and chipotle sauce) is my favorite--but I haven't had anything that wasn't great here. The steak medallions are great, the carnitas are great--it goes on and on. Dinner is pricey for Mexican--you can get up to $80 for 2 without a whole lot of trouble. But the 3-6pm happy hour is a way to try Callejon out CHEAP. For happy hour the flautaus and mini tacos with the same-as-you-get-for-dinner margaritas are a GREAT way to go. Love the place! If there's a downside, they can be a little slow an inattentive with the service here. So don't be shocked if you have to do that head-rotating-looking-for-your-waiter thing.

I haven't been here since my homecoming (ahem . . . 1994). However, after another Friday night in Encinitas trying to find a place to eat that didn't have at least an hour wait, we decided to revisit El Callejon. It was great! We ordered a pitcher of margaritas which were excellent! They brought my son a virgin strawberry drink, which he was pretty gaga over. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup (one of the best I've ever had) and the ceviche which had large chunks of fish in it, perfectly marinated. My only complaint would be that it is just a tad too loud, which makes it hard to carry on a conversation. I might have a new favorite Mexican restaurant.

The 4th star is for Uncle Bud (miss you tremendously), my first "tour" of El Callejon was about five years ago. I say tour loosely because it was a basic history of tequila and the fact that EC has over 750 types of tequila, ranging from Blanco, Resposado, Anejo, y Plata. Prices range for tequila about $7-160. Staff/bartenders are great! I would greatly recommend coming here for Happy Hour or a late night drink with friends. Happy New Year All!! Enjoy 2010!!

I love this place for 3 reasons: 1) their chips - fresh and crispy, served with salsa fresca and green salsa 2) Their margaritas - plenty of choices as far as tequila and style goes. My personal every day favorite is the cadillac made with hornitos. Mario S. was right when he wrote that you should limit it to only 3...at the max! The bartenders are not stingy with the booze. 3) It's not far from home so the taxi ride after margarita #3 wasn't super expensive. The food here is not bad, not bad at all. I've tried many dishes, none that I can say were the best meal I've ever had, but not once was I disappointed with what was served. Pretty good guacamole, too.

This review is regarding the happy hour and bar. The margaritas are great. The best selection of tequila I have ever seen. The calamari at happy hour is very good and the marinara dipping sauce has a nice mexican flair.

I love this place!! I make sure to go every time I visit San Diego. *As mentioned by many others, awesome Margaritas! *Very friendly service. *Charming atmosphere and patio. *Suitable for any almost occasion - from date with the hubby, outing with the kids, or brunch with the in-laws - I've always had a good time. *Great food!! I'm hooked on their langostinos in garlic-butter sauce. It was a special when I first went years ago. Even though it's not on their menu, they are always happy to make it upon request.

The puntas Oscar can't be beat, and the Cadillac margaritas are awesome too! Worth the 2000 mile trek from saint Louis. Makes me wish I still lived in so cal.

Go for the happy hour 3-6pm M-F. There are enough menu items on the Happy Hour menu to make a meal. The $3 house margaritas are good and $2.75 beers do the trick. I recommend the $2 Carnitas Tacos, definitely the best thing on the menu! **Also, if you go sit in the cantina to the left (if you're facing the building). They only open the cantina on the right on busy nights and I think they call in their less experienced staff to fill in that section. You will end up waiting until next year for service in that part of the restaurant! The entrees are not good tasting or well priced. totally a waste of $$, just go to the bar.

Imagine your flying somewhere on vacation, you have two weeks off and your looking forward to fun in the sun, good times, and mystical nights. Somewhere along the way, the plane develops problems and in a scene from LOST your plane goes down on a desert island stranding you there like Robinson Crusoe. 2 Years later you get picked up by a Discovery Channel crew exploring far off places, and you get rescued. If that person was me, I would ignore the news crews, the offers for thousands for the first interview and catch the first taxi I could find to make it to this restaurant and order the following: Queso Fundido Puntas Oscar in Chipotle Cheese Sauce Pitch a Margaritas This place is that good, like epic good, and the secret is in the details. The food: Fantastic, tasty, fresh and always satisfying, this place has ruined me for 90% of other mexican food. The chips: Fantastic, they make them fresh, my ex girlfriend likened them to a drug, and I won't disagree The margaritas: LEGENDARY, they juice the limes fresh to make the mix every morning, it's ruined all other margaritas for me. If you go, take the plunge and ask for the following, it's not cheap, but you have to trust me on this, ask for: One margarita made with Patron Anejo, with Grand Marnier, rocks and salt. I love these things and I am a big guy, two of these things are enough to throw me over the edge, you can always ask them if they know Kevin and Shawn, and just say "I want a margarita like they have them" The staff: These guys are fantastic, I am more familiar with the lunch staff than the dinner staff, but either way they go out of their way to really make it a fun time. Usually you can find me there on Saturday afternoons right around noon, its a 25 minute drive for me to get their and it's still my favorite place in greater San Diego.

Very good mexican food. Coming from Seattle, we wanted some good mexican food before heading home and we picked this place based on Yelp. It was certainly on par with expectations. They had great chips and salsa, live music and good atmosphere.

Come here for happy hour and get the well margaritas on the rocks. $3 each and you're wasted after two. I like that they are made with lime juice, tequila and triple sec. None of that sugary artificial sweet and sour mix. This is by far the best margarita I have ever had. I am not a huge fan of the food (I'd give the food 3.5 stars), but the green salsa they give you with the chips is pretty amazing.

  • Ashley C.

This place discontinued its 2 for 1 Margaritas, which is a shame, but it's still a fun spot to start the night. I have only ever sat in the bar as I feel that it has a fun vibe and the walls are covered top to bottom in an unusual collection of tequila bottles. If you are cool, like me and my boyfriend, you pick a selection of your favorites while munching on El Callejon's delicious (they really are the best in town) tortilla chips. I get really ballsy and order a frozen strawberry margarita but all their cocktails are good if you're not into the adult Slurpee kind. Blue Moon on tap too which is a plus. Ladies, don't try to be 'good' at El Callejon. The healthy options are pretty sad looking. Just go all out and order the Flautas because they are amazing and worth the indulgence.

  • Kevin R.

The margaritas and tequila selection carry El Callejon. The entres are mediocre for the price. Chips are a little on the cakey side, pico is pretty good, and the guacamole and green salsa are good. However, if you came here for the food you went to the wrong place. The menu of margaritas offers a great range of quality and flavors. The Encinitas maragarita, though expensive, is smooth and delicious. The Premier is great for those that don't mind a little more boozy flavor, and the skinny disappoints with an over limey flavor. The depth of the tequila menu is superb. Come here for margaritas you'll give it five stars, stay for dinner, you'll give it 3, average = 4.

I've been excited to eat at this place because from the pictures and reviews it seems festive and yummy. Boy was I WRONG!!! My boyfriend and I went for lunch on a weekend day. The place was dead but that wasn't the problem. The waiter seemed way more interested in playing his guitar and talking with the 2 cute girls at the front who were also playing guitar. When he came over to take our drink order he completely got my boyfriends drink wrong. He asked for a michelada (a drink every mexican restaurant should know) and what he got was not even the right color. My boyfriend asked if they had used clamato in it because it was a weird yellowy orange color instead of a red color. He said "oh you want it spicy?" so my boyfriend just said yeah.. thinking he would add the clamato since he had mentioned it to him....nope. He just added some spice to it that made it burn his lips. Obviously, they don't know what a michelada is.. and if they didn't why didn't they just tell him no they don't make them?? Anyways,..... the food was bland and almost inedible. My order was wrong. I wanted no meat in my enchiladas and what came out was a tiny CHICKEN enchilada.. Oh did I mention for that 1 enchilada ALONE it is was over $4?? It wasn't even the size of normal enchiladas!!.... The rice and beans were tasteless. The meat in my boyfriends torta was weird looking. The only tasty thing about the food were the fries! And at this point I'm wondering if it was just because we were hungry and the rest was gross so in comparison it may have seemed good. Bottom line: This place is over priced and so not worth it. I wish it was good because the decor was fun and totally reminded me of restaurants in Mexico... but nope a total FAIL!!

Legit. The tortillas are good and the food is really good. They have a great selection of Tequila as well. What I like the most is that the food has tons of flavor and the atmosphere is extremely casual. The service is good and if you are lucky and like spice, as for the habanero hot sauce that they make in the back. Careful, too much will have you callin in sick for work the next day. Parking can be an issue but it will be worth it just watch out for the pizza joint in the corner.

I started coming to this place with my boyfriend when we first started going out, his family has been visiting this place for ages. Every time I come here it is always CONSISTENT and good :) and consistency is key to a good restaurant at least that is my belief. If I come today and get a quesadilla one way, I expect to have the same quesadilla the same way if I come back to visit two months down the line. A very relaxing restaurant. Their soups are delicious, my favorite is the cream of cilantro soup and I love their medaliones al cilantro, very tasty!

The food was terrible. Mine was completely bland and BF ordered carnitas which were extremely fatty. The salsa was gross. The service was okay. Prices were ridiculous. We went to the other location recently, and the prices were significantly lower and the food was much better. I will not be back.

Upgraded to 5 stars. Still best margaritas around and THE BEST carnitas plate I've had on a long time. Yes, the ceviche is good and fabulous guac. Friendly servers and great atmosphere. A+

We came here with a restaurant.com gift certificate on a slow Sunday morning for an early lunch. The place wasn't busy and the waiters leisurely walked around. It has a nice beachy Mexican feel, and I bet it gets pretty fun at night, especially with live music. The orden de rajas appetizer was quite yummy, wonderful cheese and peppers with tortillas...truly yummy. The chips and salsa were quite above average. We also got the chipotle chicken, which was quite tasty but slightly overpriced. The carnitas tacos were also great. We didn't try their well-known margaritas, but will definitely do that next time. Would definitely come back. Mmmm!

To start things off, I am not terribly excited about their food. When it comes to Mexican food, I have been spoiled for my whole life and don't feel like El Callejon is something worth writing home about. It is fair enough though. On the other hand, their drinks are very good and reasonably priced. The tequila menu is very solid and the service is excellent all around. I would definitely recommend this place if you are out in Encinitas and are looking to have a big group of people get together for some drinks and some dinner.

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Parking was horrendous- I had to circle the lot 3 times, and even then, I lucked into a spot. I walked in and asked if they knew where the Zeto birthday party was seated- response "I just sat them... but I can't remember where. Do you know what they look like?" Thankfully I did know what one of the people in the group looked like, so I was able to find them. The service was awful-- we had to ask for additional menus 4 times before we got them. Actually, I'm not sure if we got them, or if the existing two menus had just circulated so much by then. It's extremely pricey! $17 for a Chicken Mole. $17 actually was the base price, with things going into the $30-$40 range. After 3 pitchers of Margaritas, we were surprised to find out that it's $30 per pitcher. We had 12 people there, and I don't think anyone was really impressed with their food.... between the 12 of us, we had most things on the menu. The mariachi band was cute. I personally only ordered an appetizer because while I had chosen an entree, by the time the waiter finally came around to take our order (which was quite a while), I had completely filled up on their Chips... which are pretty damn great. Their hot sauce is not hot, but their salsa is pretty tasty. Overall, I'd say this place is extremely overpriced, is nicely decorated, and has terrible service. I would not recommend it, and you'll likely never see me there again.

After reading the reviews for this place, I was very excited to try it. I was disappointed. The food was very good, but very pricey. I would not come without a BOGO or restaurant.com certificate. I think those are factored into the prices, which are sky-high. $18 for some chicken in some sauce with a side of rice and beans??? We were seated in the enclosed area, which has horrible acoustics. The sound was deafening from the several parties around us. When the waiter came to ask our drink orders, my husband completely didn't hear him. I had to nudge him and yell "WHAT ARE YOU GETTING TO DRINK?" (note: my husband is in his 30s and is not hard of hearing). The deafening noise improved once a few parties left and the huge party to our left was served their food. I wouldn't recommend this place for a nice dinner for a couple. It's more for families and large groups. Service was on the slower side because our waiter was also in charge of the huge group next to us. By the end, we just wanted to leave to get away from the noise.

I'm a big fan of happy hour--but not so much of the dinner prices and portions. The happy hour margs are a deal, and you can actually taste (and feel) the tequila. Get there early when there's entertainment, to snag a table. There are two bars--on both sides of the entrance. The band plays in the bar on the south-side. An adjacent bar patio borders a busy parking lot so you'll want to sit inside. Most of the dining is done "outdoors" on a very large but nice patio strung with white lights. Ambient and colorful. But be warned that trains rumble by every once in a while. I think the food is average and overpriced. And it's not typical Mexican fare--just so you know what you're getting into. You can check out the menu online.

One of my favorite restaurants! This is much more authentic mexican than most places, so they excel in their mole and salsa verde sauces. The chips and salsas (you can ask for additional different salsas) are to die for, and the margaritas are my favorite ever!! They are super strong and super delicious. they don't bother with any of that sweet and sour crap, these are lemon juice, tequila, and grand marnier margaritas!! Get a pitcher and then call a cab! Highly, highly recommended. One of my favorite restaurants in SD! Try the: chicken quesadillas (they aren't what you would expect), chicken salsa verde, any of the a la carte meals, and margaritas, margaritas, margaritas!

Seriously tasty food. Medallones al Cilantro. Tender juicy pieces of steak in a cilantro sauce. Like, woah. I did not give it 5 stars, even though it's one of my favorite places to eat, beacuse it's always busy. The wait is 45 minutes on some nights. Also, it's a little pricey. But SOOO worth it. My suggestion would be to go on a Friday or Saturday night, but definately make a reservation.

Good margaritas, good service, good dinner. Waiter was even so kind as to inform us that a police checkpoint was on a nearby street. Thanks. Would have given 5 stars, but the mens restroom was strange... only had a shower curtain to separate you from the restaurant.

I really like this restaurant. It's really very authentic Mexican food, and the taste is awesome. I order from the traditional plates, and its consistently good. The chips and salsa are decent as well, and bottomless. Get the three enchiladas with mole sauce. Oh boy, that's awesome. Writing this thing is making me hungry now.

The skinny margarita was excellent! Love, love the agave nectar. DO NOT go there for the food. On The Border (the chain restaurant) is 100 times better. My husband had the chicken mole plate and while he liked the sauce, the chicken was tough and dry. I had the chicken enchiladas and had the same complaint about the chicken. Further the enchilada sauce does not live up to it's name. The sauce is a bland tomato sauce with no spice.

The atmosphere and staff are nice but I had the tamales and they were not good. The blue cheese salad dressing was gross. Maybe other food is good but mine was not, we also had a certificate but it wasnt valid on saturdays and they did not let us use it.

We read the Yelp reviews before deciding where to go for a good Mexican dinner. Four stars overall? Hey, the place must be good. NOT. Pros: Dining al fresco Live music Good margarita (one other reviewer got that part right) Hefty menu choices Great chips and salsa--really fresh and tasty Cons: Uh, the food and service. I ordered the enchiladas benitos--three enchiladas in a Pablano sauce with sour cream, rice and beans. No joke, the enchiladas were made with soft taco-sized tortillas. What noteworthy Mexican restaurant uses tortillas the size of doilies for an adult main course? The rice and beans were minimal in portion size. At first I thought I'd been given a kids' meal. I'm the type of girl that always leaves food on my plate--I never finish a meal. Tonight, I was eyeing the parsley on my plate, and I ended up eating more chips AFTER I had finished my meal. Tells you something. The place was packed and our waiter was slammed--he had 8-10 tables--so the busboy was taking orders and serving meals. Both seemed somewhat distracted during any interaction we had with them. I give them credit for hustling on a busy night, but they could have at least greeted us or said "thank you" at the end of the night. Nothing. Next time, we'll be more cautious with our use of Yelp as a determining factor for dropping $50 on a meal.

My first introduction to this place was my friend's surprise 40th birthday! The food is excellent, and the margaritas are made in the authentic Mexican manner. I love the patio, the service is great, and my entire family is happy. My only complaint is that the pvc chairs are a bit scary to sit in after a couple of ounces of tequila hit the bloodstream!

    (4)
  • M+J K.

Good tequila selection! Great carnitas! I eat there about 3 times per month. I like to eat at the bar... good service at the bar. Try the Puntas Oscar. It is chicken in a chipotle sauce. Everything is good. I have trouble deciding what to order.

This is where the locals choose to go on a regular basis! Ok, i live in Carlsbad, so calling myself an Encinitas local is pushing it. Even on a weekday evening into the night the restaurant is busy, but the staff usually can seat you quickly & your food & drinks are served lickedy split! Food is divine- the Fried Calamari is tender, tasty & HUGE. And try the Tampiquena... muy ricos! I am not a lightweight by any means but El Callejons marguertas are very hearty too!!! If the parking lot is full just park at the Coaster station & walk down the stairs

On a recommendation from my friend and officemate (thanks, Maya!), I went here with my boyfriend in the spring. We've been back a few times since - only time it disappointed was when they'd lost their liquor license for a few weeks - given how great their margaritas are, this was NOT GOOD. However, the food is/was still delicious. I love the lobster tacos the best but everything here has been great. I've only eaten outside on the patio but now that it's getting colder we'll move indoors and check that out.

Whenever the family is in town, we all head to El Callejon for dinner and, of course, Margaritas! I am just so happy that we live close by for cheap cab rides home because they have one of the best happy hours around and the energy is so great there we always end up with that "extra pitcher". The place is great for large groups but is usually pretty crowded on the weekends. About 80% is outside or exposed seating so in the 'winter' months definitely put your grandma next to one of the many heaters they have scattered around (or call ahead and request indoor seating.) The food is of a pretty traditional Mexican sort. I love the black bean soup and their enchiladas are awesome as well as having the best mole ever. ***If you are heading down to satiate that Ceviche hankering, call ahead, it goes very quick and take a few days to make. Avoid that dissapointment if at all possible!!! The last time we were there we ordered a pitcher of a Scorpion Mescal margaritas. When the waitress asked if we wanted the scorpion, my boyfriends eyes lit up. He put that thing right in his mouth. Now he is known as the Scorpion King there!

Great food, for sure. They have traditional mexican entrees as well as some great Baja unique ones. Its all very good and I change up my order nearly every time. My husband always orders the same thing, he loves the Camerones (shrimp) Chipotle. Beware - their chipotle sauces are super spicy hot. yum! They have great mexi beers on tap, and mix some wiked strong margaritas. Downside - quite expensive for mexican food. I think a pitcher or margs costs about $1000000 (Special note - although it may not be mexican, their basalmic salad dressing is the best ever. Try the Ensalada Adrianna)

    (4)
  • Leslie C.

I give it 4 stars BUT please keep in mind this is only for certain dishes. If you order Camerones Tocino (grilled giant shrimp wrapped in bacon on a bed of chipotle sauce with a salad and rice), the Callejonada (sliced/marinated steak with gooey cheese in between two pieces of pita bread w/ guac on the side) or the cheese chile relleno you will NOT be disappointed. It's one of those places that does a few dishes really, really well. BTW, their chips and salsa are fan-freaking-tastic. I always get full before my meal comes and end up taking 3/4 of it home :) Get the tradicianal margarita. Well worth the increase in price. Everything else I've had would rate from average - good. Bottom line = stick to the things mentioned above and you'll be hooked just like me!

Authentic Mexican food at it's best! I love the Chile relleno and queso fundido con chorizo. I had never had chorizo before and I'll only have it here. The chips and salsa are phenomenal! Drinks are good too. Oh, forgot about the black bean soup and they give you cheese and bacon to top it!

Absolutely delicious. GUACAMOLE. The best I've ever had! Nice and oniony. I also had what I think was CAMARONES ZARANDEADOS. Shrimp in a red sauce. YUMMMM...can't wait to go back. It is a fun, festive space too. The bar looked like a neat place to chill. Relaxed, casual environment...couples, families, etc...

  • Shannon T.

*They recently had their liquor license suspended* BUT - when they come off suspension, I'm heading there for my margi fix. They have a huge selection of tequilas and the food is not your typical Mexican. I always order the same thing: Baja Margarita (tequila with pineapple juice), Enchiladas Benito (spicier than the average enchilada). The outdoor atmosphere can be loud, but with a baby - it's great because the screaming blends right in. Chips are thick, warm, crispy and the green salsa is a great change from salsa fresca.

  • Lisa S.

I am sitting in the happy hour bar as I type. The appetizer ,hurraches needs to be renamed horrible. The salsa tastes like it's been recycled since last night. the only good I can say is I only paid a happy hour price for my margarita...used to love this place never again.

  • Autumn C.

This place has one of the best salsa verdes I've ever had....It's really that good...I think I needed at least 4 refills on the salsa and it was so good, I seriously contemplated drinking it! I started with the "sopes," both chicken and chorizo...Go for the chorizo! It's soooooo delicious. I also had a really good skirt steak with green chilies and corn tortillas! The margaritas are excellent! Next time, I'm definitely going for the pitcher....and Tequila...they have a large selection of Tequilas... Make sure you ask for extra salsa verde...if you're a "sauce person" like I am, you'll definitely need more!

After a misunderstanding if they were still open or not since it was 9:30pm they let us in and we had a awesome dining experience. Hornitos Margaritas....SOOOO GOOD! Salmon Veracruz, and Quesadillas Fritas. The ambiance is pretty cool too. Must try if you're ever in the area. The drive to this place is awesome.

I have been going here even more frequently these days...and after sampling more of the menu I still give it 3 starz. Some things are really good and some things are surprisingly not so good...like the ceviche, I have never had this dish where it tasted like cocktail sauce! My companion tasted it and agreed...you may want to avoid ordering this one (unless you are way into ketchupy cocktail sauce, whatever floats yer boat :-).....

this is an alcohol review. sure the al pastor tacos are great and the chips and salsa are hard to stop eating...but mostly i just come here to get drunk....usually really drunk. the margys are strong and cheap. perfect really, just leave your car at home...driving home is not advisable even after three!!

One of the better Mexican places in North County. Mariachis (sometimes), strong house margaritas and good chips and salsa. Great tamales wrapped in banana leaves, grilled cebollitas, huaraches, flautas de papa, and queso fundido con rajas. They also have a lot of vegetarian options and several fish selections. Slightly pricey if you go for the full dinners but not out of line with any other place in the area. Thankfully, no valet service.

Yum. Great chips, salsa, rice, black beans. Had a carnitas taco piled high with pork. Very tender and flavorful. They give you onions, cilantro and limes on the side to use as you please. Awesome margaritas. Fun atmosphere. Really enjoyed it alot. It would be good for group of friends, families, dates. Really low key and comfortable and fun atmosphere.

Best chile relleno I've ever had. Excellent chips and salsa. Good service (not great) and my husband's food was good too. They brought my daughter free rice and black beans because she couldn't eat any of the kids menu items. Margarita was good (not the best ever) and mariachi band was fun and the ambiance was really pretty! It was seriously loud though - we could barely hold a conversation. Parking is terrible i think... fortunately we were in walking distance. Would go again if in the area and someone else was paying

Best Margs, Salsas, and Sauces offered in San Diego! You can mix any sauce you like (Chipolte, Cilantro, Chile Poblano, Tomatillo, mulitple Salsas, or Mole) with any of their meats or fishes. Fresh flavors and a fun environment make El Callejon a place people go back to time and time again. They offer Happy Hour 7 days a week from 3-6:00 which includes inexpensive house favorites from Rajas to Pastor Tacos and much more. Try it out and you'll be hooked too. They don't offer Burrito's. What they do offer is freshly made tortilla's and fantastic sauces so you can make every bite a unique treat just the way you like it.

I went here on Saturday as a stop on a bar crawl...we happened to show up during happy hour and were somehow convinced to stay for more than the allotted 1 drink per bar. Margarita's were awesome. Awesomely strong...really strong. But, that is what I like out of a Margarita, so it was perfect (comparable to those at Su Casa for people who live in La Jolla). Out waitress was awesome, however, the rest of the staff was a little unfriendly at first, because we wanted to sit out on the patio (there was no room at the bar), and they said they wouldn't serve us Happy hour unless we were in the bar (where there was no room). Out waitress came and saved the day, and told us she would serve us Happy hour outside...talk about great customer service, and making people happy. Food wise, I have eaten here a few times and it is good but it is hard to tell because I have already had a couple margarita's by the time I eat food. Food that is not on Happy hour is a little pricey, but if I was rating this place on Happy hour only it would be higher. Not a huge fan of the ceviche, because it is covered in a thick tomato/salsa sauce which make it hard to see the fish and tell how fresh the fish really is. I prefer ceviche to be all seafood and citrus so I can taste the freshness (but this is just my preference). This is a great place to go for a Saturday afternoon (as long as they actually let you have Happy hour on the patio), and since I have been here for dinner before it is great for Birthdays and large groups, a whole lot of fun!

No way! They must have different managers running the Vista and the Encinitas restaurant. I first went to the Vista location and thought the food was awesome. Then visited the Encinitas local, it was terrible. The food was oily, lathered in heavy cheese, tasted bland (I know what you're thinking "uh, it is Mexican food after all") but no! The Vista location is night and day different. Definitely not going back to the Encinitas local. The food was yuck!

I will give this a Four Stars on the Maggies however the food I have to go with the Two Stars. I have been here at least five different times and each meal had a different problem, but the food just was not good. Even the time that I ordered salad, that was missing ingredients, and when that was brought to the waiters attention, I was almost finished before it was brought to the table. Just not a good eating experience, but again, if a Tequila bar and great salsa are what you are looking for, then have at it.

This is a follow up to my previous review. I received an email shortly after my initial review from the owner of El Callejon. He was extremely apologetic about our experience. It's nice to see these reviews are being read by people that can make a difference, and that customer service still exist. We received a gift card in the mail to try El Callejon again. We will definitely be back with friends.

I guess it's good if you want to try many tequilas, the food though is standard bland mexican food for gringos who don't know any better. Think fidel's but worse.

I frequent the happy hour entirely too much. Great deal. Steer clear of the bar on the right on Thursdays. They have a band and the place is too small for loud music. Some people dance, but it just gets a little awkward. Margaritas are the best in North County, las olas and bandito have a strange lime green color going on. Tequila and lime juice.... all you need. Per person, can get enough food for dinner, plus 2/3 drinks for under $20 easily. Service is great. What to go for... tacos al pastor, margaritas, flautas.

El Callejon is a fabulous place to chow down Mexicana style. It's vibrant atmosphere is great for large gatherings or intimate nights out with that special someone who looooooooves tequila. They have so many varieties that it would take you many many visits to sample them all. At night this place is packed and always ready for a good time. There are two smaller inside bar sections with high tables and brightly colored chairs and a large outside patio dining section where the Mariachi band will visit you and do their stuff. The food is authentic and they serve big portions.

I give 1 star for the salsa. This place was such a disappointment. We arrived at 5pm expecting it to be at the be before the rush started. We were sat immediately and after waiting for about five or so minutes were finally greeted by our server. We ordered drinks, she a sprite and me a lemon water. A few minutes later they brought my friend's drink but not my water. About five more minutes went by and then the waiter came back to take our order but I was so thirsty that I hadn't even checked the menu. Finally my water came and we were ready to order. My friend ordered the asada tacos and I the huevo con chorizo tortas. After a good 15 minutes our waiter returned to tell us that they were out of the bread for a tortas. Seriously? He said that they just now told him but didnt even offer am apology but rather got defensive for no reason about the situation. On a Saturday night? I was asked if I wanted anything else - ummm...a menu? The waiter acted inconvenienced as I looked at the menu so I told him I would need a few minutes. When he came back I had decided on the quesadilla papas fritas. He acted as if I was stupid because they were mini and then started asking questions that I didn't know the answer to. I finally just ordered the quesadilla. They brought my friends food right after I put in my new order. She began to eat and she said it tasted bland. They rushed my order out but under toasted it and holy cow it was the most disgusting quesadilla I have ever had! In addition to tasting cheaply made there was a horrible aftertaste! My friend couldnt get it out of her mouth either. First time I ever had a quesadilla made so badly. When the waiter finally returned I told him it was terrible and that I didn't want it. My friend couldn't get past the first taco and we just wanted to be done. I wanted to speak with a manager and when I found the owner, the server tried to intercept me. The server rudely insinuated that my friend wanted her food because she ate most of her first taco. We were so done. Just done. Afterwards the owner came to us on our way out and we kindly explained what happened and how terrible the server was and he was surprised that even the quesadilla was bad. He was polite and we left. I wont return to this place. I would sooner do Del Taco and drink a corona in a parking lot.

I have been to dinner here twice and both times great service and excellent mexican food by gringo standards. They have all kinds of tekilla here so that makes this place a great place to meetup for drinks.

Eat here at your own risk! This place is so dirty I can't belive it's still open. Recycled chips, water jugs filled from hose on patio, eat with caution. The only thing this place is good for is cheep drinks and I mean cheep booze. You can do better at taco bell.

  • David L.

I had high hopes but was very disappointed. The chips and salsa were bland, the drinks weak, and the entrees lacked flavor. The restaurant was empty, yet it still took us 15 minutes to be seated and another 20 minutes before our server took our drink order. There are too many good Mexican options in Encinitas to waste another visit here.

If you're looking for a festive, watering hole that attempts to re-create a midwesterner's border town fantasy, this might be the place for you. But for good Mexican food look elsewhere. Greasy flour chips, boring salsa, tasteless rice, and bland beans. You don't put a "salad" that looks like the toppings for a Big Mac on a $20 fish plate. Food was completely lifeless.

I was told about this place, that their margaritas were the best & they were very generous with their alcohol. That person was not kidding! Their food is also great! I have also been back for happy hour. This place does not disapoint!! I love everything about El Callejon!!

Great mexican food but dont try and order a burrito here they are "authentic" mexican. I always get the carne asada plate and my boyfriend loves their carnitas plate. They have a couple of red salsas you gotta specially request. Fast service and the meal tastes great every time!

Walking into this place, you expect the same mediocre food you would get in Old Town. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and service. There were no tacky hostesses in brightly colored "ethnic" dresses and the waiters were really nice. I had the best carnitas I've ever had and my mom enjoyed the chile relleno. We will definitely be back.

LOBSTER TACOS!!! The lobster tacos are served kind of like fajitas here. You get tortillas (corn or flour or both), onions, cilantro, salsa, and the plump chunks of lobster. When I ate them I was sunburnt and a couple margs deep, so I can't really describe them better than scrumptious. Also, the margs are mighty fine, too! Not too sweet like most places. The alcoholic within says MMMMMMM. Service is top of the line. We had a sweet older man. You could tell he took pleasure in serving the delicious food and truly completed the experience. Finally, the ambience is fun! It's brightly decorated, and you can sit outside or in. We sat outside. Previously I sat in the bar, and the walls are lined with the bottles of more brands of tequila than I ever knew existed. The restaurant is large and ideal for a family outing or just a visit to the bar with friends. My north county beach trips will forever be considered incomplete without a trip to El Callejon. The only reason I haven't given them 5 stars is because I want to try a few more things on the menu.

Wow...this place has gone way downhill since the last time I visited about a year ago! It's dirty-like TJ dirty, the servers act like they are doing you a favor by taking your order-when you can find them that is, the portions are SKIMPY (and $18 for a flipping chicken dish that is only so-so as far as flavor goes-give me a break!!!!!!!), forget about getting a refill on your drink (had to go to the bar and get it myself) and, to top it all off, good luck finding your waiter to get the check when you want to leave! Seriously folks, you can do so much better!

I couldn't believe how busy it was there on a TUESDAY night - there was a wait. They said 25 minutes by I think it might have been more like 45 minutes when they called our name - at which point we were already sitting at a table in the bar area and our food was maybe 5 minutes away. Bernard the owner spotted us standing at the bar trying to get a drink and he was very nice to walk over and let us know he was the owner and could take care of ordering for us. He also found a way to squeeze us into a table in the very cramped bar area. Very nice guy! We both had the lobster tacos and they were good, but nothing spectacular. I think what comes to mind is that its a bit bland, although a lot of the ingredients were there. Also the veggies that came with the lobster was mushy. Sharpen it up with some firmer veggies, a few spices, and the tacos would have been fantastic!

This is a great restaurant for atmosphere and casual dining. The outside patio is great, they even have mariachis on weekends, which the kids love....and they're good! Last week we bought one of the guy's CD's...come guy who won Star Search twice! Anyhow....back to the food---although it is high priced for Mexican food, the Puntas Oscar can't be beat. It's always a leftover 2nd meal for the day after, still as yummy as it was the night before. Spicy chipolte chicken in a sauce with rice and tortillas. Yummm, and all good white chicken breast, not dark meat like some places serve. The service is hit and miss, we had to ask our waiter for more drinks, more salsa, and finally the bill which is always irritating, but when we don't feel like driving as far as downtown Carlsbad to Fidel's (our fave) and don't mind spending a little more, this is always a satisfying place to settle on.

this place almost makes me wish i lived in encinitas...their happy hour rocks like no other. they have like over 200 bottles of tequila on their walls. so you can guess they make a mean margarita. the food is really good, the calamari is a definite must...the accompanying tomato sauce is nice and flavorful with just the right spice factor. this place is a blast, good energy, great waiters, you have to be careful in this place, easy to get carried away and before you know it...you've done one too many patron shots!

Happy Hour BUST! We try to hit up new spots for happy hour and it had been a long time since I been here but I didn't recall why I hadn't went back. Well, unfortunately I won't be going back. We got there in time for happy hour but trying to find someone to serve you was almost impossible. I had to go on a mission to try and flag down a waitress or bartender and I was sitting in the bar? It was fairly crowded but didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary that a good server couldn't handle. My beer was cold - that was about the only saving grace of the experience, oh...and the sauce that comes with the calamari. We ordered the calamari, caso fundido, and fish tacos. The fish tacos were definitely the worst fish tacos I've ever seen or ate. The caso...it's a blob a cheese....pretty much like I stuck a big portion of monterey jack in the microwave and served it up. We didn't stay very long because we were all disappointed and ended up walking down to the saloon for more drinks. I didn't have dinner there but did look at the menu and the prices seemed a tad high for regular mexican fare and outrageous in my eyes considering what I had just sampled.

Where should I start ? We went here with our friends who live nearby. After wanting to go to Lucha Libre we decided on this place. We were welcomed by a nice hostess who was studying for school as we walked up. After learning about what she was studying, which we asked her about it she sat us outside. It was a cool dAy so she said she would have someone come over and light the propane heater. Well the heater was out of propane so it took sometime for it to be changed out. We were greeted by or waiter Tony who took our drink orders. They brought out chips and salsa with some spicy vegetables which were tasty. That's where the service took a turn for the worst ! Tony looked annoyed as we had children with us in a party of 7 who asked probably what he thought were too many questions. After we ordered it seemed like that was the last time we saw Tony until we had to wave him down to get our check ! There was a table of 7 who were seated after us and they ordered more alcoholic drinks than we did and Tony paid more attention to them "more alcohol, bigger check, bigger tip" just saying ! The food was delivered by a different guy who was very nice and accommodating to our needs. We had to wave down anyone we could to have our drinks refilled and that person ended up being the guy who brought us our food. I had what they call "Pescado tacos" in which the fish was drowned in sauce and it was build your own. Oh well I made them and they were ok but not like your normal Pescado tacos you will find at any taqueria in San Diego. My wife ordered the Carne Asada tacos which came to her cold ! My friends son had a kids bean and cheese burrito and after it was cut in half it showed that the beans and the cheese didn't even melt together ! Now to the good food. My daughter ordered the Carne Asada grilled cheese which she loved ! My friends had different tacos which they said were good. Our friends daughter had taquitos and loved the guacamole ! When we ordered we asked for separate checks and Tony said no problem ! Problem ! He had everything so mixed up that I paid with a credit card and my friend paid me for their portion and it was reflected in his tip ! So would I come back ? NO ! There are plenty of places within a couple of miles from here. I can get better food from a taco truck in L.A. !!!!!!

This place reminded me of every Tijuana tourist trap -- colorful decor and a festive-looking atmosphere to lure you in, mediocre, over-priced food once they've trapped you inside. The chips and salsa were fine, but my husband's cheese enchiladas were bland and the sauce tasted canned. I ordered the chicken tacos, which were literally chopped chicken on two corn tortillas, and that's it. They did come with a trio of ramekins filled with some wilted-looking cilantro, onions and lime wedges, but I'm glad I ordered a side of chipotle sauce or the tacos would have been bone dry. The chipotle sauce was OK, as was the chicken, but the black beans were also bland. The one thing I really liked was the rice -- it had the perfect amount of salt, although it was served in a weird pre-molded lump (which was rather unappetizing). I didn't feel like ordering a margarita so maybe I missed out in that regard, but if the food was any indication, the drinks are likely over-hyped. The service was nothing special -- it was quick, but not especially friendly. With dozens of other Mexican places to choose from in North County, we're not likely to visit this one again.

Everything about this place has the makings of being really, really good but somehow it all manages to fall apart. You end-up leaving feeling like you were somewhat cheated, and I don't mean moneywise. Try lack of attention to details. The food has the feel of quality and the potential to be great, but then and I'm not quite sure why, it falls short. Maybe its the presentation, yea thats it. Maybe that's the way everything is about this place. It's got the potential for great ambiance but not quite there, the potential for great service, but somehow the waiter's heart really isn't into it. It's like dancing with the girl that really doesn't want to dance. Or like the fake designer purse that fools some people but not those that really know better. At times this place looks and feels authentic and appealing. At other times it seems dumpy and cheap. The shower curtain separating the bathroom stalls kind of sums it all up. They should put a guy in the bathroom asking for tips to make us really feel like we're in TJ. Is it good food and a good time? I'm not sure, but yea I guess. The salsa is top-notch. other items are some good, some not. The Calamari is not good, and the margaritas are way overrated and super-small. Everything is expensive and you're going to pay big for something that will take you half-way through the dining experience that they pretentiously promote. Like having sex without the climax, or the massage without an anticipated happy ending. I know that you all just have to go see for yourself, but for those of you that have actually experienced a real Mexican dining experience before, keep in mind that you've been warned. Most of the previous reviews mentioned the Margaritas. I think with enough booze Taco Bell could get reviewed as a fine dining experience. I'm learning the hard way about most people's reviews; they are way to generous with them. A 5-star means a 3.5, and a 4-star means a 2.5. Keep your expectations low, and then you might not be disappointed.

Delicioso!!! Came to SD for a vacay and found this place via other yelpers. The chips, salsa, and margaritas are excellent. I had a shrimp dish. yummmmm! the cheese enchiladas with green AND red sauce are absolutely amazing. also, their chips and salsa are awesome, you will probably get full off of those before your meal arrives! The service is great, and the food arrives fairly quick. Oh and i suggest you go on a saturday night (the wait was only like 30 mins (we got there at 7ish) and it would be less if you have 4 or less people) because they have a MAGICIAN!!! ok i am not 10 years old i swear! while my friends and i were waiting outside for our table, this guy comes up to us, and at first we rolled our eyes and wanted him to leave us alone. But then he started doing these really cool tricks and he was hilarious at the same time! We basically fell in love with him and kept trying to get him to come back. So the food is awesome, the service is great, the atmosphere is really chill and fun, and the magician on saturday nights just tops off your night! Overall, el callejon is one of my favorite restaurants and i definitely recommend it.

Before we had children, my husband and I used to frequent El Calljeon (almost weekly) for their incredible food and strong margaritas. Their menu is so diverse that you can't get sick of eating here. But, now that we have a daughter, we have another reason to love El Callejon because it is very child friendly.

  • Elizabeth A.

I grew up eating Mexican food all over Southern California. I have had a varied experience where ever I have gone. As such, is El Callejon authentic? I have no idea, nor do I pretend to. Is the food delicious? ABSOLUTELY. The Cream of Chipotle soup is unlike anything I have ever had anywhere else (does that mean it isn't authentic?) and it is amazing. Go in a group and get lots of different meals to share, and as long as you are there in a group, get a pitcher of the house margarita. Some of the reviews have said the margaritas are overpriced, if you get a higher end Margarita and only one of them... they are a little expensive. The food is not the cheapest, but they are very generous portions, I have never gone home without a doggy bag. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, expect a wait - though you can get food at the bar. Any other time, you will usually get seated and served promptly.

Went with my two kids and my parents. They gave crayons and a drawing paper to the kids, which was unexpected. We sat in an outdoor veranda, with portable heaters. The interior feels authentic and you wouldn't expect it based on the exterior. The food was really good. I had the Puntas Oscar which was spicy and delicious. We also had the Parrillada - Sea for two, which was very tasty. The chips and salsa were great. The regular salsa I thought was the best. The spicy version wasn't so great. The green salsa was ok. I think the service was friendly, but not as prompt as I'd hope. It took awhile to take the order, but the food came really fast. Then it took awhile for them to clean the table and take our dessert order. But again, the food came pretty quickly. All in all - an excellent dining experience. I would definitely go again. One of the better Mexican places I've been to.

Yet another off experience for lunch. Came in here on Friday 9/11/2015 for a late lunch. About 2:00pm. Picked a table in their patio section (most of the place is outside) with partial covering anyways. The service was extremely slow and the place was empty! Maybe, 5 tables were taken at most. It took .47 minutes for my food to come out. Cheese enchiladas and a carne asada plate. Crazy! No apology from my waiter either. On top of this, the food was marginal at best. I have eaten at this location and more so at the one in Vista. I will go back to Vista but will not come back here. Too many other places in the area (Encinitas) who are serving quality Mexican food with much better service.

I've been bugging the wife to come here for the ~3 years I've lived in Encinitas. She kept telling me that it wasn't worth it. I should have listened. I finally got my chance to check out El Callejon while the wife was getting her hair did in one of the salons upstairs. My brother-in-law and I waited downstairs watching the US Women's Soccer team beat up on Japan. They had a very liberal happy hour. Nice prices on beers and margaritas. The place was showing it's age a little. Things weren't super clean or super new. You could tell the bartenders didn't have that fire in their bellies either. They had been working there a long time, knew the routine and had lost the love of giving great service. They were short and almost seemed bothered when we asked for another drink. If I were on vacation (as many people who frequent Moonlight Beach across the street are) and I tried this place I would consider this as one of the not-so-good meals we had while on vacation. After the wife came downstairs, she brought the rest of the crew with her (sister-in-law and nieces). They wanted to get a bite. We grabbed a table and were presented with a hand written menu. No prices, no descriptions and barely legible. The hostess handed them to us and promptly took off back for the hostess stand. You could imagine the looks we gave each other at the table when she walked away. We all chuckled and said various versions, "WTF is this shit?" to each other. The waiter, who wasn't exactly a ray of sunshine, came over to explain they were missing quite a few members of the kitchen staff so they were serving a limited menu. Fine, I get that, but there could have been a better presentation of what the were serving that night. I consider that a management fail. The food came and it was ok at best. It wasn't worth what we paid at all. I've had MUCH better Mexican food from Juanita's down the street. That place is a total local hole in the wall, way better quality, and roughly half the price. I've said it before, I hate crapping on local businesses, but this place really needs to step it up.

We've been here a number of times over the years. Can't beat their Happy Hour. 3pm-6pm every day, even on Saturdays. $5 margs and a great happy hour menu. Remember HH is only available in the lounge areas which are not terribly large. Parking is limited also and the men's restroom is literally outside the restaurant in an adjacent building. Otherwise this is a fine place to kick back with a little te-kill-ya (aka tequila).

This was the worst mexican food I have ever had in my entire life. I ordered the carne asada taco platter, which is hard to mess up and my wife ordered the chicken enchiladas (Pictures posted). Two of the easiest dishes to make in a proper mexican restaurant. The tacos tasted like the meat was boiled instead of grilled and the only seasoning you could taste was black pepper. The enchilada sauce rivaled ragu spaghetti sauce and the rice was crunchy. I don't think you can make a worse mexican meal if you tried to. Usually I would be very mad at a meal so bad but this meal made me laugh. The service matched the food and I was never asked if I needed another beer or if we wanted anything else to eat. I had to flag down a waiter to take our order because our waiter could not be found. The outdoor area was very loud and you have to shout if you want the person next to you to hear you. Overall this place is so bad that you should try it for yourself so you too can know what truly bad mexican food is. P.S. this guy below me must have been lost in the mountains for a week before eating at this place.

Best Mex in SD! I've been here numerous times and continue to go back. Pollo en Mole Verde, Puntas Oscar and Camarones en Salsa de Mango are some of my fav dishes. Service is outstanding! I will never stop making the 40 min drive to this amazing place. Well worth it!

I am Mexican and need my Mexican food. The owner is from Mexico City and knows his authentic Mexican food. I have been going there for every birthday since I was 5 years old. (I am 26). MUST HAVES at el Callejon: -Queso fundido (it's basically a big bowl of melted cheeses to make your own quesadillas. Get it either with chorizo or just plain cheese. Grab a freshly made (not bought) tortilla put some cheese in it guac and salsa fresca and be prepared for the best quesadilla ever!) -Pollo al chipotle gratinado (grilled chicken in a spicy chipotle sauce. Gratinado means with melted cheese on top) -Pollo poblano gratinado (grilled chicken in a creamy chile poblano sauce with melted cheese on top) -Flautas de pollo (chicken rolled tacos in corn tortillas. Get with NO SALSA on top. Just with cream and cheese is the best way to get them and then put guac and salsa fresca on top on your own) -Coctel de camarones (huge Baja style shrimp cocktail! They serve it in a huge chalice! So worth it!! Squeeze a lime in it stir it up and be ready!!! Tastes the best with some quesadillas fritas on the side) -Quesadillas fritas (basically two small empanadas. Get the chicken or plain cheese) -Quesadillas (any quesadilla is good) -Grilled shrimp -Chipotle shrimp gratinado -Pollo en mole (chicken with homemade mole sauce on top! Very authentic and delicious!) -Chile relleno ( a poblano chile stuffed with cheese or beef and battered then fried! Amazing!!!) This is the best Mexican restaurant in San Diego. When my family from Mexico come visit we take them there, to us it is the best Mexican restaurant in the world!!!! Even better than many restaurants in Mexico!!! It's our little treasure in Encinitas!!!

Just moved here from NYC and am trying out all the Mexican joints in the area. I also live part time in Tijuana so I am curious in the differences. This place is average at best. Cochinita Pibil plus tap water and tax/tip was $25. CRAZY. You get a decent amount of pork then your average rice and re fried beans that you can get at any fast food joint. The pico de gallo (salsa) was bland...really bland. The pork was extremely average. I've had way better in Old Town. Not going back but the outdoor eating area was quite pleasant. Staff are not the friendliest. They do the bare minimum for a tip. Want good mexican food go to TIJUAS.

Great mexican food, great bar, great marguerites!!! Oscar is the bartender and we love him! Oscar makes the bar what it is, if not for him it would just b another Mexican bar. We go for the margaritas and Oscar!!

I like the open feel here and the food is decent. The bar is well stocked with all the beer and liquor you could want. The host and the staff were very nice which is why I gave it four stars and not three The food is good but not great. I found some of the dishes under spiced and under salted and some seafood slightly under cooked

Perhaps we ordered the wrong things but neither myself or my guy were impressed with El Callejon. It was a Friday night and we were in the mood for Mexican. After scouring my Entertainment Book, we found a BOGO for El Callejon and decided to drive up to Encinitas to give it a shot. I decided to try something different than my usual enchilada order and I got the Puntas de Pollo. Although I asked for all rice and no beans and the waiter seemed to acknowledge my request, my plate still arrived with beans. The chicken was a little bland and I had to add some salsa to give it a kick. I ended up making a couple little tacos and then brought the rest home so that I could fix them up with some more ingredients. My date ordered the chile relleno with cheese and wasn't impressed either. The chips and salsa were okay but I prefer my salsa to be blended rather than a chunky pico de gallo mixture that's difficult to dip. On the plus side, I loved my strawberry margarita! In the end though, we were just happy that we had the BOGO offer because we wouldn't have wanted to pay full price for such a lackluster meal. The prices are also outrageous for Mexican. The chile relleno was $16 and my chicken dish was $17. I feel like there are much better Mexican restaurants in San Diego at more reasonable prices.

This place is a quiet little spot with a huge selecion of tequilas. Went there during lunch hour was able to sit at the bar. Bartenders very friendly talked to us about the different kinds of tequilas and gave us some recommendations. However the food was sub par. I like mexican food but i would def describe it as white washed mexican food. Tried a couple different items was not all that inpressed. Will go back again and try my luck on some other dishes though.

The only reason this place gets a 3-star review is because I worked a Patron promotion here on Cinco De Mayo and I really want to come back and try the food! It was extremely busy that day, but I must give props to the employees for being so organized and friendly despite the chaos around us. As I was walking around, passing out samples of Patron and swag, I noticed all the food coming out and overheard people raving about how good it was! I even spoke to a couple that was seated out on the patio that come there regularly and they raved about the house margarita and said I MUST get it next time I come! I wanted so badly to come back after work to eat, but it was late and it was still really busy so I opted to go home and will definitely come back w/ my boyfriend so we can knock it off our Foodie Bucket List :) Part 2 of this review coming soon!!

This is authentic Mexican food. I however I am not usually an "authentic Mexican food" type of eater. I grew up on the local walk up taco shack style places which is tweaked a bit for the local So Cal flavor, I guess. Regardless, there is something at El Callejon for everyone. And, if you like margarita's this is your place. If you want to see, like every bottle of tequila ever made in the world, I guess this is your museum. There's like a million different tequilas on the shelves. I often wonder if they really contain the crazy juice or if they refilled the bottles with water after having been consumed. Hmm. I wonder, I wonder, I wonder. Upon being seated you'll get the usual chips and salsa and then chose your poison. I can handle one, maybe two, but not three, margaritas. Not because they aren't fantastic but because my crazy comes out to play at that point. They are really good though. As for teh food here's what I like - Flautas, Carnitas, Shrimp tacos and ... Ya know what? I just checked the menu to remind myself what I've had over the years and realized, I love a lot of things on the menu. Check it out for yourself. There's a pretty damn large variety of sea food and much more tasty food. In fact I just found something I have never noticed before. In the "Quesos" section it lists the following - (Volcan) Grilled cheese with carne asada or chicken on top of a tostada shell. Served with rice and black beans. OMG. That sounds fantastic right now. I was just there couple nights ago watching my friends band play and I could have had that. Damn it. We used to meet a group of friends here nearly every weekend for happy hour. What the heck happened to that? I don't remember. Maybe I had that third margarita and forgot all about it. Lol. Never fear however, I'm sure we will pick up again where we left off. El Callejon has been here a long time and because of the food and drinks I suspect it will stay for many years to come.

"What happened?!??" is the question that we keep asking. As so many recent reviews, we found that the food (and the drinks. and the service..) has gone way, way down hill. Its really too bad, as El Callejon, for so many years, was a solid joint for great food and delicious margs. Sorry to say, but after a HORRIBLE lunch experience today (terrible chicken, watery salsa, weak drinks), we won't be going back.

This used to be our stand by Mexican. I have been going for years and I am totally and completely done with this place. The only thing worthwhile is the margaritas made my Oscar. My last meal there was terrible. They had run out salsa. How does a Mexican restaurant run out of salsa? I asked that exact question with no answer. I ordered a dish that I have ordered multiple times. I had to send it back twice and it was never correct. I was unbelievably disappointed and dissatisfied. I will go back for the margaritas but that's about it.

This place is underrated!! I went here for Taco Tuesday and wow, it was great! I had the street tacos in carnitas, al pastor pork & carne asada. They're only $1.50 each! Carnitas & al pastor were my favorite. A friend got the lobster taco, which were big and came in 2! The chips and salsa were very good too! We also had the bean & chorizo dip (3.5 stars) and the chicken rolled tacos (meh, skip it) for apps. Can't wait for the next TT here!

It's funny when owners get all defensive and bitchy with their response...I'm just reviewing exactly what we were told / saw. We were told with 100% certainty there is lard in the chips and that there's no grilled fish or seafood options on Taco Tuesday special. If the menu has changed, that's great, but this is what we read on the menu and were told. Apparently they've lost their liquor license, so maybe it's not so weird that it was totally empty on a Tuesday. The notice on the door said they lost it, not that it was suspended for a week...new patrons will have to confirm this. We sat down and were told by several different people that the chips are cooked in lard, which meant my husband, who is pescatarian, couldn't eat them. The salsa was flavorless salsa fresca, which is impossible to dip. It has obviously changed because there's no way I'd rave about regular old salsa fresca in my previous review. Then we get the Taco Tuesday menu and there's not a single meatless or seafood option! Literally the only thing available are baja fish street tacos. He couldn't even get grilled fish! And the other seafood tacos are ridiculously overpriced at $12-$14 for 2. It's one of the only times I've ever sat down somewhere and left within a few minutes...I felt bad that we ate some chips, so we left a few bucks.

Really like the open air seating outside and would be great for kids or a group. Haven't been here in a very long time but having my bike worked on next door, we decided to go have a drink and a bite. My friend ordered the lobster tacos and he had to send them back. Under cooked and NO flavor. The waiter was more than nice and got him something else. I had the chicken pastor tacos. Pretty good. They had flavor, should have used avo on them, no one offered hot sauce which sucked when I got halfway thru my meal and realized my tacos weren't hot! They brought me some nice and hot red sauce which was good. The beer wasn't close to being cold, ice had to be added. Probably wouldn't visit here any time soon.

Terrible service....terrible food....expensive. Not a good combo. Ordered the lobster and shrimp tacos and they had zero flavor. My black beans were completely dried out. Sat for about 20 minutes waiting for a server to come take our order. Waste of money.

A little above average Mexican restaurant. With so many in San Diego, it's hard to really pinpoint which one is the best, but it defintely wasn't this place. The staff is nice enough, very friendly & helpful, but they didn't have too much going on besides that. Ordered the Pollo con Mole [$18]. Chicken was a bit dry, but it was a good portion & the mole tasted good. Came with rice and beans of course & I feel like that rice was the highlight of my plate. I tasted the carnitas plate [$18]which also came with rice, beans and guacamole. I should've gotten that plate! Oh they serve chips & dip but the dip was a bit too spicy for my taste. Nothing really stood out. Sorry El Callejon.

If I ran El Callejon I would double the size of the bar area. It is teeny weenie and packed to the maximum occupancy all of the time. The happy hour is the hero of El Callejon and the food is more of an afterthought. Let's face it, they serve mediocre food at best. You could come in every day and taste a new kind of tequila and I doubt that you could get through them all. They already have over 200 varieties and are always adding new ones. You would be like a hammered hamster trying so hard and never getting anywhere. I have tried to eat here so many times and Ima have to give up. I came in on a Sunday afternoon at 3 and tried to sit in the bar but ended up in the dining area. I found out about the vegetarian menu just today. It sounded pretty awesome, but my wave of excitement was short lived. The mushroom enchiladas were icky. Flavorless, unsalted mushrooms that tasted like they had been soaking in water instead of brushed clean were wrapped in tortillas and topped with a teeny bit of bland red sauce. Save yourself the trouble and just order the rajas and some refried beans. Back to the bar area, I would have stayed for a drink after lunch if there was a seat for me.

The food was delicious. This place is one of the few places in San Diego that knows how to make good chicken mole. If they had served the chicken on the bone I would give it 5 stars. Flavor was good though. I had a few various tacos, al pastor, Carne Asada and fish tacos. They were all delicious. We had a Chile relent and it was so good. The carne asada torta was yummy. The bread was crispy...not soggy. This was my first time here but certainly not my last. I had family in from Chitown...they are Mexican Puertoriquenos...and they know good food. They loved this place and said they want to come back...enough said. They service was pretty on point as well.

Charging 18% automatic gratuity for a party of two? Charging for the items that weren't brought? Thanks, but no thanks! The food is ok, but overpriced, given that Tijuana street tacos are 45 min south.

I know El Callejon has gone through some hard times, but last night caps off the too many horrible experiences in a row that I have had there. First let me say that Oscar at the bar is a gem, he is great, and I can't say enough great about him. But the rest of the service is just plain poor. I've been back there often enough that the servers all recognize me, but yet still somehow they act like they don't care. Went back again last night, and got waited on by Benito who has waited on me probably 15 times before. Still, he acted like he didn't even care. The service was horrible, we had to flag him down for everything, he acted like he was doing us a favor taking our order, and just had an overall bad attitude about everything. I can take bad service, but this was the third time in a row that the food was bad, and this time it was so bad that it deserves a rant. They were out of pico de gallo salsa. That's the salsa that they always put on the table, yes they were OUT OF IT. How can a Mexican restaurant be out of salsa? They should have shut the doors instead of letting us in. Maybe nobody in the restaurant cares enough to order tomatoes. And that follows through to the rest of the food. We also ordered our old standbys, Tampequenas platters. The meat was half the size of usual, I think because 4 of us at the table ordered it, they took the steaks and cut them in half. Even what they gave us was old and dried out, as though it had been cooked and then re-cooked. The rajas, which used to be their signature dish, tasted like peppers mixed with cream cheese. All the food was just terrible. If this was the first time I had gone to this restaurant, I'd never go back. Margaritas were good, but that's because they were made by Oscar at the bar. I'm not going back for quite a while, if ever. Which is sad, because this used to be my go to Mexican in San Diego, and now it's might stay away from Mexican place in San Diego.,

For being one of our favorite Mexican restaurants, we just had a pretty sub par experience. Service was slow, and the food definitely was not as good as we've come to expect. I hope it was just an off night. We'll come back, but maybe after the summer crowds are gone.

I am only giving one star because there is no zero star option. After finishing my meal at the bar, I just witnessed the bartender remove a sink full of used red straws, transferring them to the garbage. Then he proceeded to place dishes, glasses and rubber bar mats into the dishwasher. All without gloved hands or washing his hands after. After that, he proceeded to pour drinks, squeeze limes into glasses, serve dinner plates at bar and then poured himself a drink and grabbed an orange from the garnish tray and eat it. He is now texting on his phone. El Callejon is a DIRTY place. BEWARE.

I'm so bummed about this review. I really want to give a positive review, and if I would've joined Yelp two years ago when first moving to the area, probably would've raved. Now I might just have to rant. The customer service in the last two years has dive bombed. There seems to be the same 2 or 3 servers working every time we are in there, and they are half listening to your order, very abrupt and all over the place. You wait forever for them to get your drink order, so don't go in thirsty and have your order ready by the time they get to you. The food comes out fast, the order may/ may not be completely correct (since they weren't listening to the particulars), and they will probably forget that second margarita that you just ordered. But, maybe they will make it up to you when they bring out your bill, about an hour after you're through eating and the rest of your party is walking to the car. Not sure why it started, but w/in the last year they switched to playing more traditional/ authentic music to something you'd hear at a club in Tijuana. Thumbs down! When they have the mariachi band there (maybe on the weekend evenings?), definitely a thumbs up - these old timers are amazing! The food, when you get the right order is really delicious (hence 2 stars instead of one). My husband and I split the Pollo Oscar and you just have to get the grilled onions (ask them for "extra grilling" so they don't come out raw). Come with about double the time you usually spend dining out and a little extra patience and you might be OK.

This place is amazing. We have been coming here a couple times a month for the last 5 years so I think its safe to say we are regulars. We always order the same thing "Puntas Oscar" - its chicken in a Chipotle Cream Cheese Sauce served with tortillas and rice and beans. Sure hits the spot! Unlike many Mexican Restaurants, they do not water down their margaritas. They are really good! 1 sip and my hands feel heavy! Try this places - its amazing.

After eating here half a dozen times over the last year and being disappointed in the food every time, I have finally found a reason to never go back. I ordered the Sopa 4 Mares and was completely disappointed in the size and presentation for $14. But to top it all off, once I got to the bottom 1/3 of the bowl, I was surprised by the addition of a baby roach of some sort on my spoon. No thank you.

This place tops the list for awful. Why, you ask? Here's a list: our chips were soggy, the salsa looked recycled, the waiter got a little huffy when I asked him to correct my order that was not what I had ordered, and the "blackened" fish tacos we got were doused in something more like pseudo barbecue sauce rather than anything blackened. And, in spite of the place being nearly empty (yes, that should have been a clue!) the service was way too slow. So what was good about our visit? It was a once in a lifetime experience and it's done and over with. Well, almost anyway. Hopefully by tomorrow morning the lingering gastrointestinal discomfort will be gone.

Went there yesterday for lunch. Not at all busy. There were 4 plates on the table and two were filthy. That's when we should have left but we were hungry and had to get back to work. My friend opened her menu and immediately got slop on her hands from inside the menu. The waiter walked by our table numerous times and chatted with other employees. It took a very long time for him to stroll over to our table and a mini lifetime to finally get our food. I ordered the chicken mole plate. The single slice of chicken was pounded so thin if hadn't been covered in mole sauce you could probably see through it. My plate was also cold but I didn't want to send it back and have them nuke it. My flour tortillas were stale and thin like hard kleenex. I really think they were heated in the microwave. My friend's corn tortillas were the same way. She ordered chicken in chipotle sauce. Unlike my cold plate, her's was burning hot presumably right out of the microwave. When the waiter put it down we both thought it was mac and cheese. The entire dish was drowning in an ocean of cheese. There was no visible chipotle sauce. To add insult to injury these lunch dishes were $18.00 each. Bottom line: Over priced. Mediocre food. Dirty dishes and menus. Terrible service.

Great food, not so great service... I really want to like this place, but always feel rushed. I dig the outside vibe and the colors, but slow down people. I have tried a bunch of the menu from shrimp enchiladas (meh....) to the Il pastor tacos (good and flavorful). Chips are good and the huac is very good. All the taco dishes are about what you expect. Nothing great. But good. Drinks are OK and service is once again....QUICK. But careful of the mariachi band. Nice guys who are trying to make a buck. Never make eye contact or they are with you for a while. I dont hate this place, just feels touristy and a tad dated. But, i continue to go...OK, maybe its me.

Been here several times. Great happy hour spot! They have awesome Margaritas, great chips and salsa. (it's hard to find all 3 at one Mexican joint! It's a fun place to come with a group or to come with a friend and sit at the bar. Been here for lunches, happy hour and dinners. Haven't had a bad meal yet. Bartenders have always been friendly and kept things flowing.

We came here for a family dinner; the local family members eat here regularly. This was my first time. Salsa was presented in a plastic "to go" cup on the table, and was probably the blandest salsa ever tasted. Anyone can chop a few tomatoes, onions and chilies together. Chips were OK. The quesadilla plate presentation was pathetic. Cut sections of quesadilla slopped on a plate with a small spoonful of bland rice. Arrived lukewarm. Another member of our party ordered the chicken with bacon and a green sauce. Arrived stone cold. Was probably just put in the microwave because when it reappeared, the chicken was dry and tasteless. Doubt if we will ever be back, especially reading through the other reviews of long time patrons.

Our waiter must have had an evil twin or something, because he was not consistent at ALL. The service was slow, people in groups of 8 that arrived later than our party of 4 got their food faster than we did. When i asked the waiter how much longer the wait would be (after waiting 30 minutes) he was incredibly rude to me. He almost yelled, and not just because of the ridiculously loud atmosphere. Not only was the food slow, it was just as slow to get refills (people had to ask for refills, they didnt even refill my water). After that, he later apologized and gave us some guacamole and chips for free, but i was still put off by the terrible service. He tried to make up for being mean to my family, he was extremely rude (practically yelling at a teenage girl, really man?) but this was still pretty bogus. I have eaten at this restaurant several times before and have never been treated so poorly by a server. The food itself wasnt terrible, the cochinita pibil was actually quite good, but i have to say the service almost ruined my day. The servers here do not wear name tags and i wish they did, because i would love to warn the people that eat here to request a different waiter.

Wow. I haven't been here in a few years and it's sad to see what's become of it. The service sucks, its dirty, and the food is processed and/or previously frozen. Waaaaay over priced and a total waste of a great location. Don't waste your money.

Gross. Was randomly in the area & in the mood for mexican food & magaritas so yelp brought me here. Ugh, was yelp wrong about this place. This place is huge, but feels cluttered & unkempt. The bartop felt sticky & the menu was hideously tattered & hard to read. We ordered a beer & margarita, and reviewed the menu. Most of it just made no sense, they're trying to charge $17-30 bucks for the most basic of mexican dishes that can be purchased at several other places on the same street for much less than half. After being grossed out by the establishment & turned off by the menu we just paid for our drinks and left. No thanks.

I came across El Callejon after a beach walk in Encinitas. It was a hot day and my friend and I were ready for a cool drink and a snack. This restaurant caught my eye because of the nice shaded outside patio facing the street where you could do some grade A people watching. I was greeted instantly and was gestured away from the appealing seating that caught my eye. I asked if I could sit there and the server said no, the owner is out there having drinks. HM disappointing already, thanks owner for advertising the best spot in the house as just your own. Way to go. I was sat inside at the bar, behind a window. No AC no breeze, very icky feeling. Menus were brought to the table as I cruised through I didn't notice a drink menu, so I asked for one. The waiter said they didn't have one, and pointed to a little plastic stand thingy that sits at each table advertizing their 10 dollar Cadillac margarita with all the special added goodies. It was a big glass, and had the fancy ingredients, so I went with it! What did I get? A WARM NON SALTED RIM of a drink HALF THE SIZE THAT WAS PREMADE! A ten-dollar drink that comes from a pitcher, are you kidding me? ABSOLUTLY NOT! Half the size of a photo and WARM???!! I should have taken a photo of the drink up against the advertisement! I had already ordered, Crab enchiladas, and beef flautas, so I was stuck. The place gets two stars ONLY because my server was awesome, polite and quick, and the food was decent. The crab was great, not fishy at all, and was portioned well. The flautas I enjoyed because I enjoy a rolled taco. My friend was let down because they were not flaky, and were more rolled taco like. Another reason for the two stars were the bathrooms were extremely clean, and smelled like they are tended to often. I do not mind paying a little extra for better product, but El Callejon was a let down.

Excellent service good location but the food and drinks are way overpriced and the quantity us very little I'm sure there are other places which provide more value for your money will explore further

Love coming here- Great environment and service. The bar is large and spilt so you have lots of options for happy hour which is 3-7pm. Great bar menu and skinny margaritas are strong, well made. Chips and salsa are provided whole you wait. We tried the flautas this time around and they were excellent. if you have not tried it-trust me it is worth it!

I would give this place 3.75 stars. . .leaning towards 4 for the food, but the prices are quite expensive. The Carnitas plate is really good and the chips and salsa are addicting. Not your average sloppy looking googy plate, really tasty stuff. Still, two dishes a side and no drinks costs us $45. . .thats kinda steep. Also make sure you double check the menu prices with what is on your recipet, they didn't match up for us.

Where to start. I went here about 5 years ago a few times with friends and it was a great post-surf grind spot. Went there tonight for dinner and literally had the worst paid restaurant experience I could put down on paper. Here's a recap: - lobster tacos tasted like water and were clearly frozen - salsa had a killer green pepper that ruined my meal/taste buds - prices are ridiculous for fish plates - chips tasted like old fried wontons, not like tortilla chips - salmon limon looked and tasted like chicken piccata - service was a joke, we had to ask for everything, even forks and what not - they forgot to carry our bill over from bar which is good, but they aren't on the ball - drinks were totally watered down. Margarita tasted odd - one buss boy seemed high on Oxy, he looked like he was going to keel over and was really sweaty I wish we hadn't paid, we were about to walk away and I have never done that in my life. There are waaaayyy too many great Mexican restaurants in San Diego than to waste your time with this one. Jack in the box would have been a better option, and 100 bucks cheaper to boot!

Visited last Monday with some friends. We live locally and this place is a joke. Yes, they have an insanely good bar with massive volumes of diff tequilas...but, that's where the compliments stop. Overall, this place is ridiculously overpriced - i'm mean seriously? WTF? $16 for a comb or $18 for an entrée. The food is average at best - most places like (God forbid) On the Border or El Torito are just as good - which is saying something (and that's not good) - again, these places target the mass market and do their best but come on El Callejon. I ordered one of the combo plates and all of the portions were small...tasteless and just crummy overall. Unreal...there went $83 for four (two kids). Ultimately, go to El Callejon if you want to completely overpay for Mexican food. If you really do want to dine somewhere great that has awesome food - head north 1-2 miles and drop into La Especial Norte. Least the food and prices are good and you wont feel like you got screwed.

Service very patchy. Ordered a second beer--server (Antonio) never delivered it--he did how- ever remember to put it on the bill I had to walk over and ask him to take our order, My friend called to him as he was walking away--she requested to change drink order. He was some distance away-apparently didn't see a need to return to table--he knotted as if to acknowledge the change request--then delivered the drink she originally ordered. bill a

Best margaritas and fish tacos around! Roxy has to be the best server in SoCal ! Amazing tequila selection, wouldn't go anywhere else for a post work Rita or a weekend lunch and drink by the beach!

It could have been a bad night for them, but it wasn't a good experience from waiting to be seated to the length of time it took to get our check. We will not be back. The Baja fish tacos were extremely fishy and smelly. The service was below par. The best part about this restaurant was their salsa and chips!

I definitely see the initial draw because the whole restaurant has an outdoor patio feel, the food is decent enough and its lively & loud so easy for those with kids (like us). The restaurant has special meaning to us because it's one of the places we dined with family the weekend we got married 6 years ago. The thing is that the restaurant is seriously needs to be power washed. Every inch is really sticky, and just not well maintained. (Probably hasn't been cleaned SINCE our dinner 6 yrs ago) Our menus were seriously disgusting, highchair was disgusting, table sticky, had to ask the hostess to wipe my food covered chair, walls sticky...overall disgusting. Our server was really struggling. She was nice but it wasn't the kitchen, it was her. I have worked in the restaurant/hospitality business for over 18 years & I know when it's the servers fault & when to not. She was poorly trained & that is also the restaurant's responsibility. We had to show her the items we wanted because she had no clue, (carnitas, etc. basic stuff) she forgot 2 things we asked for, got our drinks the same time as our food, we got another table's food TWICE. Kids quesadilla was literally drowned in butter/oil. Whole plate was a puddle of it, no exaggeration. She saw it and said nothing...I was seriously shocked! Then I get a voicemail from the restaurant while we were eating that said if I didn't show up soon, my table would be given away...huh??? I was there! I told the hostess my reservation name. And when I walked up to the hostess she seemed clueless and said she marked my reservation already. So obviously a lack of communication somewhere among staff. Just laziness & chaos all over the place. We were really bummed because we just wanted to have a fun dinner with our kids celebrating our new car. Plus parking is always a nightmare. Truly. Don't know if I'd ever waste my time going back. It's clear the management (or lack there of) has given up. I saw zero management during our entire evening btw. Needs serious help! So sad :(

The food was overpriced and cold when it came out. The service was good but to pay that price for below average cold Mexican food, I would not return.

Don't go there, just don't. Everything was filthy;menus, plates, furniture. I told the waiter I would start with a bowl of soup, and he never came back after that. I put down the money for the soup and left. The cream of cilantro soup had a a skin on top of it from being too hot. I removed the skin and noticed the soup was still boilling after being microwaved too hot. Before it cooled down enough to eat, it developed another skin which I also removed. The chips were fried flour tortillas and the salsa was mediocre at best. I also had to cover my food with napkins to keep the flies out. Before I fled 2/3 of my soup at lunch time a man began to scrub the floors with cleaner so strong it was hurting my eyes, nose and throat. At least I wasn't trying to eat at this point. If i could give a - (negative star) I would. EXTREMELY DISGUSTING & INCREDIBLY BAD

Food was ok, service was ok, drinks weren't that great. A big "eh" from me. There are defiantly other places with better mexican food. The food was pretty bland & dry as well. Wouldn't want to come back here

  • Mike A.

Stay away from this place. Poor service, no customer courtesy. No smiles from any of the staff we felt unwelcome by waiters, nothing but ice in my soda, asked waiter to refill with less ice and either did not care or poor hearing because got even more ice soda tasting like water. Limited menu and over priced food. Would have preferred going to Juanita's taco shop up the street. El Callejon restaurant in Encinitas is pathetic.

The happy hour is nothing to be happy about. Arrived after 3 and ordered margaritas and tacos. Being a Mexican food connosior I knew right away that the deep fried, undersized tacos in front of me were something to be weary of. The bus boys were nice and did their best but the bar tender and waiters successfully ignore their patrons throughout your stay. I found myself missing the taco truck down the street and was wishing that I ate there instead.

No chips at a Mexican restaurant? This is how the server greeted us after he approached our table. Wait, what? We had a friend in from out of town who wanted Mexican food. She was disappointed that there were no chips. He kept reiterating that they did have salsa though. Um, ok. In any event, they also canceled our Open Table reservation for no reason although we were seated pretty quickly. There are tons of great Mexican restaurants close by. I won't be rushing back here.

If you're going to El Callejon, I'd suggest happy hour! The food is decent but nothing special and the last time I was there for dinner, they lost my credit card for about half an hour which was weird and unprofessional when they tried to say that I'd never given them my card?! But I must say the margaritas are good and strong...and the happy hour deals are the right price! +1 Great deals during happy hour +1 Strong margaritas +1 Conveniently located in Encinitas on the 101 near Moonlight Beach

I've been here five or so times. Today they seated us as a group of seven at very short notice. The margaritas are delicious (try a mango/strawberry blend!) and the service prompt. The food is hit or miss. Ceviche, chips & guacamole, and queso fundido are all great, and they have excellent happy hour specials (only in the bar). But avoid the quesadilla (chorizo was overly greasy with a dry, plain tortilla) and fish taco (bland). I'd give this a 3.5 if possible.

    (3)
  • Joseph B.

The margaritas are fantastic! Light and refreshing, unlike those sugary concoctions made with all sour mix that you'll find elsewhere. Salsa is delicious and packs a sneaky heat that will catch up to you after a bit. Staff are welcoming and attentive. Great overall experience!

Great food, fun atmosphere and excellent service. Chips warm and salsa delicious. Also ordered hot salsa which was great too. Loved the carnitas. Extensive tequila list. Margs were great but be careful because they're super strong!

  • Kent B.

Stick with the free/amazing warm tortilla chippies & salsa, carne asada tacos plate with flour tortillas, and STRONG margaritas by the pitcher - DONE. Yelpers, I've tried other menu items but this trio is CHEAP and honestly the best thing goin. Learn from my folly and get the above "yummy grub" to guarantee good times! I give this gringo watering hole 7 "sometimes one must accept the truth and stop being a cockeyed menu ordering optimist" out of 10.

Just went there for CINCO de Mayo and I couldn't have left happier! Maggie (as well as the two guys who were always so attentive to clearing plates and drinks) took care of my date and I . You could imagine such an epic holiday and assume an hour long wait wouldn't be worth the trouble but HONESTLY they are SUPER awesome and they have great attitudes even in a hectic peak of the evening. Full house and all we still got our drinks, food and bill very efficiently.

How do you spell downward spiral. Just had dinner there with out-of-town friends that were dying for Mexican. Very disappointing execution on everything we ordered. Fish taco was like a rookie mistake, nothing like a Baja fish taco; chile verde too mild and greasy. The kids bean burrito was so bad the kid didn't like it. It was a tasteless mess. Even the chips and salsa sucked. I guess it's the bar that keeps the place open. Never going back.

First time: I went there one night order the flatas with green sauce.... Came out with red sauce Second time: same thing, same waiter Third time: same thing, same waiter, meat was not fully cooked, and a hair in my salsa.... 3rd time was not the charm. So disgusting, never again will I go.

Went in for only a margarita while my girlfriend got her haircut, so I don't know how the food is, but the house Marg was strong (got a little buzz off one), and they serve free chips and salsa.

Our server Ali was awesome! Girl rocked happy hour and we had a great time. Tasty margaritas and calamari..ceviche looked and tasted horrible.. Kind of felt bad for the poor avocado swimming on the top. But over all Ali made our experience by giving us the best service we've had here! Totally recommend asking for her.

If you are looking for a Margarita, then you have found the spot. They have great Margaritas for sure. If you are going for a cocktail, and just hanging in the bar, be prepared it is a bit tight and it can get loud in there. I couldn't even hear my friends talk and they were sitting right next to me. They do have a dining area, with out door patio, it probably holds about 60 people. Their idea was to serve the most traditional Mexican food around. And their recipes come from family and original traditional ones. The food it pretty good. They do have live music there on Thursdays. The bands I have seen are pretty good, made for an enjoyable evening.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in San Diego North county just let me down. I had not been there in sometime and decided to go there on a Saturday afternoon with my son around 11:30. The service was extremely poor and there was only one other foursome in the restaurant. We had to ask for waters, I had to ask for condiments for my tacos (cilantro, onion, etc), which typically come automatically when you order tacos for lunch. When I asked the guy looked at me as if I was crazy. And this particular waiter is been working there for probably a decade. My son had to ask for a refill at the bar for his coke because the same waiter never came back to check in on us.....because he was at the bar chatting with the bartender. And it took forever to get the bill. My carne asada was chewy and not the quality I had come to expect over the many years I have been coming here. My sons bean and rice burrito was good but how could you screw that up? The food here is not cheap for Mexican but in the past the quality and service made up for that. What happened El Callejon?! Very disappointing. BTW, I wrote this review and edited during the time it took to get the bill. And it still has not arrived.

  • Richie W.

I'd probably give it a 3.5. Rounding it up because. This is a nice neighborhood mexican sit down restaurant. The food quality was decent. About a rung or two higher than your standard ghetto mexican burrito/taco shop. They have an amazing tequila list though. I enjoyed my experience here more than I would at like an El Torito or On the Border. So if you have a craving for that type of food, I'd suggest coming here. My female friends really thought the waiter (Didier) was really hot. If you're female, ask for him by name.

This restaurant shouldn't be on any foodies radar, unless you're looking for a "how NOT to lesson" in restaurant operations, food service & food quality. We called & made reservations for a party of 9 & arrived on time, but apparently no one got the memo. Fair enough, so we waited for not one, but two different employees to get our table ready. Upon being seated we requested 9 waters to go w 2 pitchers of margaritas...the waters arrived w the bill FYI. The good was marginal & the service haphazard. NOT recommended for any food dishes, but I gave it 2 stars because the$40 pitchers of 'Rita's were actually decent.

Re-writing my review, because somehow my last one from over a year ago was flagged by Yelp this morning. Gee I wonder how that happened! This place has bland food along with watered down drinks. Save yourself time and money and go somewhere else.

Just Average at best.food was ok. Salsa was worth 4 stars but I used that to fill in for the small portions

Possibly the only thing I'd go back here for is good food. Great margaritas too but there are a lot of other places where we can get that. Service is okay, could be much better. We were here for a large party about a year ago and though they got our orders correct, the servers' attitudes were almost too obvious that they were not happy about serving a big group (but were looking forward to when we leave and they get a big tip). We were here other times and the place doesn't really stand out to me. The food can be really good or really bland or taste kind of old. You would not know what you'd get until you have the food half-chewed in your mouth. I think for the prices it should be consistently be good here but it isn't. I've had better luck at Roberto's, it's cheap and it's almost always good. It's a nice place for a group, if you don't mind servers with attitudes. My fiance and I had to flag a guy down once to refill our water and they were not happy even though we ordered beer and margarita along with our glasses of water. You can have a decent conversation as a group here, it's not too loud. The mariachi band came to play a song but that was it. It was fine, nothing fantastic. They didn't seem to be happy to be there either so none of us were really into it. We just kind of entertained ourselves. Nothing fancy, definitely casual. Maybe good for a night of drinking. Okay experience. Nothing impressive. The only other good thing about this place is the guy named Scott. He was clearly not a server but was happy to get us what we needed. In my opinion, their servers could look up more to people like him. That guy needs a promotion.

What? How does this place get good reviews? I would never go back. Worse Mexican food ever! Service was also bad. Disappointed!

  • Mitchell H.

I have to call this one the good, the bad and the ugly. Ok, First the good news, the food here is fantastic. Really big menu and a lot of Mexican gourmet style dishes. The halibut was great, the steak in spicy sauce even better. Even the table chips were fresh and home made. The Tortilla soup was awesome. Have not had a bad dish here is many outings. The bad news? Very pricey. See if you can use the groupon or weekly mailbox coupon otherwise it can get up there very fast. If you are looking for a great margarita and less impressive food, it's Casa de Bandini across the Freeway hands down. The margaritas here are served in a whiskey glass and really unimpressive and tasteless. After having the Cincorita three color mango margarita at Bandini's, I'm just spoiled. The ugly? The atmosphere is loud, crowded and cheesy. For the cost, it's really unimpressive and surprisingly expensive. Summary? Great great food especially with a coupon if you don't care about atmosphere, otherwise pricey, noisey and really frumpy. Just my 2 cents, hope you like it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
