Hands down, the best Mexican food in East County! Especially for the late night munchies!!! :) Despite the previous review, this place DOES have carnitas. I don't know of ANY taco shop that doesn't sell them. If there's something that you're craving and you don't see it on the menu, ask! They might just have it! Carne asada fries/burrito are good, but the chimichanga is my favorite! I feel so guilty after eating it, but damn... it's good! Yes, they're always busy but be patient. It's worth the wait!

I'm giving them 5 stars mostly because i don't think the other reviews are very fair ... they do have carnitas and not sure what the first review is about (sloppy CA Burrito? i ordered one right after reading this review to see if he was right....and it was off the mark). Maybe they've changed a bit since we started going there - who knows - but all I can say is we drive 10-15 miles to go to El Compadres when there are at least 10 that are closer to our part of town. They're always busy (both drive thru and walk up window) - open 24 hours - the employees are super nice at all hours of the day ("hola my friend!" is a common greeting, with a huge smile...even the first time we were there). Definitely good all around pick for mexican food. My boyfriend (mexican foodie!) and I give them an A+ ~ check 'em out!

Was on my way out of town, didn't have lunch so stopped by around 10pm. Yuck, never ever again. The cashier was impolite and abrupt, guacamole was runny, with no flavor. The taco tasted like cardboard, again no flavor, my combo plate with bean tostada, cheese enchilada, and taco I mentioned above all had that bland taste. Then tried to save it with salsa which didn't help at all was just hot no flavor. Guess the few who rate this place 5stars haven't had much else, sorry for them. I'd rather not eat then cram this shit down my throat again.

Had a California Burrito and it was fantastic. Usually a lot of the mexican food makes me sick but this was great. Our new favorite place :)

Best Pollo adasa (o) fries! I love how they chop up the jalapenos I order and just top off my fries with sour cream, cheese and guacamole. LOVE it. I don't really get anything else there..the wait is long at times but hey it's worth it.

A-Frame with a Drive-Thru in the middle of it. That's one of two notable things about El Compadre. The food was average, and the service was messy. They put so much sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo in their California Burrito that you can't taste any of it - it's just a big sloppy mess in a tortilla. The other notable thing though was that, despite their poor quality, the drive-through line was stacked with pickups and small SUV's, all bearing the stickers from ORW and other desert sports companies. The cooks inside were shoveling out dinners faster than you can imagine. I guess people like messy and bland, as long as they can get it handed to them through a window while they sit in their pickup.

Best Taco Shop in El Cajon!!! They have the best Carne Asada fries ever and give a great portion. What does it for me thou is the mini carne asada tacos, even thou I wouldn't consider them mini. They are almost as good as TJ tacos and if you buy them between Mon-Wed they are only 99 cents a taco! The reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because they do mess up my order often, so just make sure you check your food before you order. I recommend you trying this taco shop if in the area, u can't miss it, it looks like an old wienerschintzel and is open 24/7!

After years of getting off @2nd St to get gas on our way east. I finally convinced my wife to drive thru. I had the #17 fish taco combo and she had rolled tacos. Both were great. I loved the rice, the tacos were yummy too. Will stop again and again.

The California burrito I got was probably the least tasy one I've ever purchased. The potatoes were really bland as was the meat. I also thought the price was pretty high when compared to the quality of the product. I don't recommend this place; there are better alternatives in the surrounding area.

Solid 5 stars for outstanding Customer service, I visited El Cajon location 8/28/15 and met lively Gabriel, very friendly and enjoys talking to customers. I showed him my yelp check in and received my free drink. He only works 10 to 6 so no wonder I never met him before. I usually come here at night but now that he RESTORED my faith back in El Compdre I'll return very soon! Thank you again for listening to my order and great food this time around! Awesome Service!

A familiar old spot where I enjoyed many a burrito. Having worked in the area for several years and having family who lives nearby, I have visited El Compadre for years. I can tell you some important things. First of all, there are two entrances to the drive thru. There is an entrance on Oakdale (this is the main entrance) and if you drive in that way, you actually get to park next to a menu before you order. If you enter from Second Street, you are left to the mercy of the overhead menu which is barely visible by itself unless you know to look for it. Also there is usually confusion on who gets to drive up to the window next. And sometimes this adds to the confusion of the staff, as I have received the food that the car ahead of me ordered in the past. This go round, we got a California burrito (which is made with real potatoes instead of fries) is full of delicious cheddar cheese, and plenty of beef! The meat is flavorful but the quality is spotty. Sometimes it's amazing, sometimes it's a little crunchy. Take that for what it's worth. The staff is courteous and actually cares if you enjoy your food, are quick to correct their mistakes, and gives you plenty of salsa cups without any issues. We also ordered the Carne asada fries, which are bomb from this spot! Plenty of everything, just look at the pic! Another word to the wise, don't frequent the walk up window, unless you enjoy interacting with the numerous street wildlife who seem to live and loiter on every corner in this part of El Cajon. Just stay in your car and order yourself some of the best Carne asada fries in east county.

It's hard to find a bad Mexican food joint in San Diego, but this place takes the cake. I've been here many times for a late night fix, and the food was usually decent enough not to complain about. Tonight I ordered a carne asada taco combination with rice and beans. Pretty simple, uncomplicated order. After ordering, I waited over 20 minutes in the drive-thru, even though there were just two vehicles in front of me. From the looks of the food handed to those folks, the orders did not seem complicated. But who knows. Then I pull in. They were about to hand me an entirely different order. I told the girl that I actually ordered the taco combo and she asked me if I was sure. Then I saw the girl walk out orders to two drivers behind me. I waited another 10 minutes. Wow. No apologies, no complimentary flan or anything. 30 minutes waiting for taco shop food. Unacceptable. It got worse. When I got home, I noticed scorched/overly-cooked pieces of carne asada in the tacos. I took a couple of bites, but they were entirely inedible and bland. Did not taste any seasoning of any kind on the meat. I had to toss them. The red sauces they provided were watery and flavorless. The rice seemed overcooked, and I was given a portion that appeared scraped from the pot or pan in which it was cooked. The beans were disgusting and looked like they had been cooked in lard. No flavor at all. This is definitely my last visit here. There are simply too many good options around town. Sombrero's is just down the street and it's food is always good. They even have health conscious options.

Just moved to El Cajon and was trying to find a good Taco Shop. Decided to try this place out and I'm sorry to say we won't be returning!!! Extremely long wait in drive thru despite only having 2 cars in front of me. I wanted to drive off and just forget my order but I was pretty much trapped. I finally ended up getting my order and headed home.I live approximately 3 mins away from this place and when I got home and took out my order of 10 rolled tacos to feed to my kids, I was grossed out. Usually I'd be annoyed if they were skimpy on gaucamole(which they were) but I didn't even care seeing as most of it was brown!!!! The cheese was completely melted and all clumped together. Just absolutely horrible rolled tacos!!! How the hell does a Taco shop screw up rolled tacos? Never giving this place another cent of my hard earned money!!!

    (1)
  • James L.

Their carne asada quesadilla is really good. It comes with a big fresh tortilla, cheese and very well seasoned/marinated carne asada. The staff here are very friendly too.

Good taco shop. Open 24 hrs. Right off the freeway. And theres a drive thru. Doesn't get more convenient than that.. I've never had a bad burrito from this place. If it's 2 am and you're leaving an establishment that was open until 2am, this is your stop.

The only good thing about this place is that it's 24 hours. Other than that their service is horrible and they are very stingy with their food portions. I think I paid way too much for their carne asada fries because of how little they served and how much they sucked. Instead I go to Santana's or sombreros now.

    (2)
  • Erin H.

Good food! This is our go-to for a California or carne asada burrito. They are always yummy. The best thing about this taco shop is that it's open 24 hours, drive thru and walk up window ordering. There is no inside seating. There are only three outdoor tables with umbrellas. We have ordered at the walk up window before, and the service was even better. Such friendly staff! I've also ordered the taco salad in a tortilla shell, and quesadillas. All very yummy!

Had the California Burrito and it had zero flavor. Definitely or coming here again. I'd much rather go to Sombreros.

I used to love El Compadres food but I hadn't eaten there in a couple of years due to the fact that after a couple different times after ordering a mixed burrito and only getting a beef burrito, I asked the punk kid cashier at the time to make sure that I did in fact receive a mixed burrito, but nope, I got home and once again only a beef burrito, I would of gone back and threw it in his face but it would of been a long drive back. Well, today I thought enough time had passed to try them once again and yes, I did get a mixed burrito for $4.50, but it was one skimpy burrito with whats becoming a trend with most taco shops in El Cajon, a burrito with mostly bell pepper and onion slices along with chunks of canned tomato with hardly any shredded beef or beans. I give up, I won't try them again, there is better out there for sure. May update: Well, last night as I was leaving the big city about 11pm after a long day and nothing to eat since a late lunch, I thought I'd give em another try as a few months had passed and my options were limited, so I swung by for a mixed burrito to go and as I pulled up to the window, I repeated my order to the nice girl due to the price she quoted me and she said to me that she thought I ordered a bean and cheese burrito and I told her no, A mixed burrito, a "bean and beef" burrito, and she said ok, she then said that will be, I believe $5.25, and then I said to her that thats a lot of tax for $4.50, but ok, and she said wait, no, my bad, $4.90 I believe, so I paid. Then this nice girl came back to the window and asked if I wanted cheese in it and I said no, so she said he will remake it and I told her it was ok that way but they remade it anyway and I was on my way home. Now the funny part, when I got home, I reheated my burrito and started eating it only to realize that I once again I had a beef burrito and not a mixed burrito as El Compadres history repeated itself once again, unbelieveable! I will be nice enough to mention that this time the shredded beef wasn't choked out by too many bell peppers and onions as it was last time and my beef burrito was tastey, but a bit heavy without those precious beans.

This place is seriously disgusting. I've been there a few times (hoping that it would get better) and every time it's horrible. There's always what feels like bones in the meat. When you see inside you notice how dirty it is. It's a health hazard. I REFUSE to eat there. Luckily there's a taco shop right next door that is a thousand times better that I go to now. It doesn't have a drive thru but the quality is way way wayyyyy better. And the guy is way nicer.

WARNING: there was hair in the food don't go here This place is disgusting I ordered a Cali burrito I asked for fries and the meat to be well done also chicken burrito with just sour cream guacamole and cheese also 3 rolled tacos and 2 fish tacos with lettuce tomatoes and cheese with the tarter sauce on the side everything I ordered was wrong the California burrito bread was really dry everything on it was dry and crispy I only asked for the meat and fries to be well done not the whole burrito next is the chicken burrito it had everything on it even things I didn't ask for it was soggy and it was falling apart and the chicken was still cold and had a nasty smell like it's been sitting in the sunlight for hours. The 3 rolled tacos has literally nothing on them no guacamole no cheese nothing literally just the rolled tacos the fish taco also had everything on it I asked for the sauce to be on the side and it was in the fish tacos also the fish was cold and had a bad smell to it we called them asking for credit they told us to bring to food to them so they can evaluate it and see if they can even give us store credit seriously. Also I found a hair in my burrito they employees are dirty no hair nets or anything and that fat girl is very rude and talks smack please don't go here you will get sick and maybe die from food poisoning I am calling the health department tomorrow to have them go and inspect the Restraunt they are really dirty and they should get shut down please don't go here.

Not every joint produces a legit carne asada. However this spot does it right. The carne asada slices are thin and cooked until it's slightly dry, reminiscent of the way it is done at the many taco shops i've experienced throughout the baja california peninsula. You wont find the typical over-boiled marinated beef kibble thats been simmering in its own liquefied fat all day at this spot. The meat has been cooked to order during my visits here.. I keep coming back to this place for the California burrito and the bean burritos. The rolled tacos are tasty too. Yum! Oh ya, dont forget they're open 24 hours w/ a drive thru..

I have been going to this taco shop for some time now. For my last three orders they have made my order wrong. I called to inform them and the female told me that the only thing she told me to do was open my burrito to check ifnot was correct while i was still there. Then she proceeded to tell me that she has bo time to listen to what i have to say about their business. Never once apologized or offered to compensate me whatsoever.

I came here on the Fourth of July a few hours after the fireworks ended. The food here is okay but why I'm giving them two stars was for how they got our order wrong. We asked for two California burritos without pico and we asked to add guacamole. When I get home I open my burrito and I see that there's no pico (yay) but there's also no guacamole! (So I thought). We open the second burrito and there's tons of pico and again, no guacamole. Upon further inspection we realize that there's a MINUSCULE amount of guacamole on both burritos. It costs almost a dollar to add it but it was hardly visible. I wish I took a photo because it was only noticeable upon VERY close inspection. If I spend almost a dollar to add guacamole to each I expect more than the amount of a teaspoon on my burrito. Their green salsa is really good though and I used it to add more flavor to my fairly flavorless burrito. The potatoes in the burrito aren't anything special either, just large, unseasoned chunks. Overall the food was okay but how little guacamole they added just made me mad because you shouldn't be charging almost a dollar for barely anything. Ridiculous.

One star because of being open 24 hrs! 2 star because the carne asade fries! It was also cool barely fitting the big truck in! The shredded beef chimichanga was really gross, and had too much sour cream, and too much guacamole! It made it soggy!!! Can I get a chimichanga with that sour cream, and guac please?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!! Really I had to throw it away, it was that gross!!!!!!

Let me see, yes the do offer a free agua fresca or soda with a Yelp check in, which is very cool, but it would be even cooler if it would make fantastic food that matched the coolness. Being in a hurry, I ordered the three rolled tacos with guacamole and cheese for only $3 and some change, which was not a bad deal, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The rolls came with a good amount of guacamole and grated cheese, and they both tasted good ( yelp.com/biz_photos/el-c… ), but the rolled tacos needed a little more time in the fryer, because the texture of the tortilla inside the rolls had that grainy consistency, like when you eat a cold tortilla. The modest amount of shredded beef inside was fine and it certainly tasted good with their pretty good hot sauce. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/el-c… ) It was simple hot sauce it had good flavor. I do like that they added a sprinkling of cotija cheese in addition to the cheddar. The place ONLY has outside seating and a drive thru, which seems to be the bulk of their business, the drive thru that is, and of the seating they have, it's only about three tables. I was leaning between 2 and 3 stars, so I am settling for 2.5 stars, because realistically, that is how I felt when I left, a mixed bag...

Not the best taco shop around but it's tacos let's not be too serious about it. I do tend to compare all taco shops to my favorite which is Sarita's, this place doesn't really compare so it won't be fair to do that but basically it was food, it was close it was late and it beats Jack in the box or whatever else is open at 2am. The prices were average and the location is off the freeway so it's easy to get to when you are in the area and hungry. However, there are like a million places to eat over here and I would have rather ate Taco Bell than this place just to be honest. The burrito was not a true California burrito, it had meat with no flavor, not so spicy salsa and some very undercooked potatoes, nonetheless it was late I ate it lol. This place is probably only best after you have been drinking, a lot!

I have eaten here multiple times since moving to el Cajon and I love their rolled tacos with guacamole and cheese. Their rice reminds me of my grandmother's and the enchiladas are amazing :) I want to try so many more things off their menu but don't know where to start it's all so delish!!!!

I thought this place tasted alright and I loved having a 24/7 drive thru nearby, but after getting wicked food poisoning, I wont be returning. Yeah its convenient, but I'd rather not lay in bed feeling like I am dying for hours. If you feel the same, you might want to keep driving.

Ok. This happened tonight. I went at 930 pm. 2 guys working. I order 3 rolled tacos with guac and cheese. Simple order. As I came up to the drive thru. Person charged me like $3. And some change. Anyways I speak English and Spanish. I placed the order in English. I overheard when I was waiting that they gave my order to the car in front of me. And Suddenly they whipped up my order in the matter of 15 seconds. So I got the order and left got home. Like 5 minutes away and opened it. The rolled tacos were literally freezing cold. I'm in the food industry and this is unacceptable. The fact that they also got caught by me speaking Spanish and thinking im an idiot and wouldn't notice intrigues me. Called and they apologize but couldn't do anything I come literally once a week if I can and never had problems but after this. I will never ever be coming back.

I've ordered the same thing there for the past twenty or so years - Bean and Cheese and Rice Burrito with Salsa Mexicana (Pico de Gayo) and four hot sauces inside. It is the most wonderful ever combination. They make the best ever version. I traditionally order this on return home from a trip. Never disappointed. UNTIL LAST NIGHT, I hate talking to the sign, but sometimes you just have to. So, I tell the sign what I want and the sign says, "We don't do that." I say, "Yes, you do." Response from the sign, "No we don't." As I drive off, "You have for the last twenty years, ADIOS." Very sad.

Great place for a late night snack or meal. They are open 24hrs and are conveniently located right off the 8. Can't miss it. It's an old weinerschinitel location with a big mural of a dude wearing a pancho/sombrero with a soccer ball. Good food. Consistent food. Only gave 4 stars because there are too many taco shops that offer more flavor. Remember to check in. Get free soda.

  • Christopher O.

This place is no good. To start off with, the advertisement of the free soda or agua is not true. The cook said it was for the "other" location, not this one. Second, they messed up my order of tacos by adding more stuff that I specifically did not want. When I returned the tacos to get it corrected, the cook gave me attitude and tried blaming me for not letting them know...doubt I'll ever come back here.

I got the 3 mini tacos. The tortillas are very good! The meat however, was an offense to me. I am Mexican and can cook better taste carne asada! The guacamole tasted like beer.

We were Family gathering and friends on Wednesday night and went to get some Mexican food and I understand the guy was little busy cuz he was by him self but Inside the kitchen was all dirty and after we ordered for around 47$ after collecting the money and visa with receipts and stuff the guy went with out washing his hand grapped the meat and put on grill and also the grill was dirty too he didn't even clean it one of our order was California burrito I saw him fixing his Pants and underwear grabbet the fries mixed it with the meat and we told him that is gross he act it like he's not listing and don't speake no English no more and we had to throw all the food that we ordered in the trash and he didn't wanna listen to us I hope the owner do something about this cuz I also see a lot of reviews on here are bad and he's loosing a lot of customers and we were customer for 2 years but every time when we were ordering we wasn't even looking what he was making the food until the last time and the fried oil locked really really darkk like never been changed for ever

Went today & got the supreme carne asada burrito. It tasted bad & was poorly made. 5 hours later & I'm feeling very sick now. Not recommended! the young lady who was working was very friendly and efficient. she saves this place from getting a 1 star review.

Their food is ok. I go a lot because it's close to my house, has a drive-thru, and is open 24 hours. Drive-thru takes forever though. I know taco shops are not fast food but damn. Anyways, the people are cool I guess. I never had any problems with them.

The tortillas are fresh. The beans are good. The hot sauce is a bit liquid-y for me. The rolled tacos are kinda bland. It's a mediocre taco shop open 24 hours.

I've eaten here maybe 5 or 6 times, I've only ordered shrimp burritos so that's all I can judge by, but every shrimp burrito has been delicious and good size/price ratio. They don't skimp on the shrimp.

  • Jordan J.

My girlfriend and I just tried this place because, we figured, if it's been around for nearly 30 years, they gotta be doing something right...uh, not really the case. I got the california burrito and it wasn't flavorful at all. It looked like the carne asada wasn't even seasoned and the rest of the ingredients tasted pretty bland. My girlfriend said the burrito seriously lacked flavor. Oh, well.

    (2)
  • Amber F.

I gave them 1 star for being open late and 1 star for having a drive thru. I was however dissappointed with my carne asada quesadilla. They used very bright orange cheese and very sparingly. The meat itself was salty and dry. Could have been how late it was but I think if you are staying open that late to serve food it should be the same quality as any other time of day or night. Maybe I'll try again but there are so many in the area, prob won't go back.

My California Burrito was good. The skinny twerp at the window has no customer service skills. I got charged for an additional topping when I asked for a substitution.

El Compadre happens to be one of my favorite taco shops, it's convenient that it's open 24 hours and the food is alway tasty. however this is the 2nd time I've gotten sick after eating there. I have a weakness for the super carnitas fries (but chips are good too) Not sure if it's the pork or what but no bueno the day after I thought I was gonna die just a little bit. I will continue to go here but maybe not eat the carnitas anymore..

I went here for an emergency machaca burrito and was disappointed. The burrito tasted bland and the hot sauce tasted like ketchup with a pound of salt in it. I was surprised how bad this burrito tasted, I threw it in the trash and I was really hungry. They need a better chef.

On our way back to Arizona we decided to stop by and grab a bite to eat. It looked like an ok place from the outside. Went to place my order and while I was waiting I took a peek inside through the order window filthy place food and trash on the floor. I had already ordered so decided to taste the food. I ordered a chile relleno burrito they give you large servings but in this case large was not better the food is so bland no taste what so ever. My son ordered a chimichanga the guac was turning black u could tell it was not fresh. Some good advice spend your money else where because this place is disgusting they give mexican food a bad name!

Excellent! I used to stop hete every morning when I work graveyard shift on my way home from work. This place is open 24 hrs so I know it will always be open for me. And this place had the best adobada this side of chulajuana. The go to plate is the super adobada fries. Feeds two people

The food is not bad here, but consistency is a major issue in my mind. 3 years ago, I stopped coming here. By that point, I had already experienced some unpleasant things from this place (at one point there was a used band-aid in the plastic bag along with the items I had ordered) but the food was good and cheap... I showed up one day, and I order a bean & cheese burrito. Pretty simple. I was sooooo disappointed when they told me that they did not have any beans. Yes, they literally said they had no beans to serve me...in a freakin mexican food drive thru. What the hell?!?!? So... about a week ago, I go back and try it again. I figured they could not have been open long if conditions had remained the same, so they had to have changed for the better. I was right. Service was friendly and food was awesome. Tonight was visit 3 for the week. I ordered (2) #5 combination plates. (the #5... it's a cheese enchilada, a beef burrito, rice and beans). I am not a beef burrito person, so I asked if they could give me a bean and cheese instead. After a minute or so of silence, they said they could. I also asked if I could get a Carnitas burrito instead of the beef for the other combo plate. They said yes, but that it would cost more. I asked how much and after about 45 seconds, he tells me it's $2.00. I am fine paying a little extra, but please believe I want to know that it is a correct and reasonable price. When I pull up to the window and ask him to explain the $2.00, he says it's the difference in cost of meat... I had already done the math... Beef burrito was $4.14 and the Carnitas burrito was $4.83. $1.30 is not a huge issue and I still paid it, but it was just seeming a bit shady.

The building was ghetto fabulous. It looked like a converted Wienerschnitzel with a drive thru cut in the middle of it. I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito Combination Plate. The rice and beans were okay. The carne asada burrito was bland. It was just okay. I probably would not return here because I believe there are much better taco places in the San Diego region.

Worst taco shop ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We ordered a breakfast burrito and a california burrito. The california burrito was mushy in the inside and the potatoes were boiled and blend. Even the breakfast burrito was horrible. Never ever again

The best way to describe how El Compadre looks is like a triangular Wienershnitzel hut with a drive through forming a rectangular hole in the midsection. It was very brightly painted and looked like one of the only places open in the vicinity past midnight. After being the only one who was up after leaving the casino with his friends, our generous hero offered to buy them Mexican food here as a small consolation prize. The breakfast burrito our hero decided on tasted horrible. He had to turn on the light in the car just to figure out was he was eating. The bacon was lukewarm and chewy rather than crispy, and the eggs were somewhat burnt. His friends' quesadilla and tacos were also a "meh" at best. PROS: - Open 24/7. - Unable to miss it due to the convenient location and unique architecture. CONS: - The menu for the drive through is posted right above the tunnel you drive in to for ordering, so you will have to crane your neck or look out your sunroof to see what's available if you're not sitting in a lifted truck. Why couldn't they have placed the menu board NEXT TO the drive through like other well designed fast food restaurants? - Really mediocre food, which was quite disappointing for such an interesting looking joint. - There's barely any seating outside. This is meant to be a drive through fast food place. - Bad bacon breakfast burrito.

I usually enjoy this place, but they ripped us off last night by not putting our rolled tacos in our bag. I think this happens often as there is a sign there stating that we aren't responsible if you don't have everything in your bag. Also, their enchiladas were soggy which I haven't seen before. Possibly under new management.

Great food. Great prices. Open 24 / 7. Drive-thru. Fast service. Almost everything on the menu is really good, but the stars of the show are their Fish Tacos, Street Tacos, any quesadilla, really good guac. Their carne is good. Better than ok, but not the best I've ever had. (ergo 4 stars) THE BOMB: Shrimp Burritos. Seriously great flavor and huge shrimp.

Love this place!! I don't think I've ever really had a bad meal here. The service is a little slow at times but everything is made fresh to order and they have limited cooking capacity so I understand and am good with it. Love their carnitas meal, chirizo burrito, everything!

For years, I have avoided this place. Looking like an old Weinerschnitzel. The pyramid building isn't much too look at. I work in the area and have been going to Estrada's next door for a while. So the first time I came here I was pressed for time. I didn't feel like getting out of my car so I was like I will give this taco drive thru a shot. This 24 hour taco shop has two drive thru lanes that converge into one. I can see there being mayhem if two cars show up at the same time in the different lanes. So far I haven't had any problems though. The guys working there are cool. They always get my order right and are pretty fast getting it together. The food is also decent. Their fish tacos are my addiction for now. Their burritos and tacos are pretty good too. I recommend their shrimp burritos. They use full size shrimps. Not those tiny shrimps you can get at other taco joints. They make a killer cheese quesadilla as well. I am continually amazed how simple ingredients can make something great like a cheese quesadilla- tortillas and cheese. Definitely my first stop for Mexican food on a lunch break in El Cajon.

I'm sorry, but this place takes forever!!! There were a few people ahead of us, but when we arrived at the window where we pick up our order, we waited another 10 minutes. Lousy service for lousy food. Re-reviewing this place with a 1-star!

At one time, long ago, this place was a Wienerschnitzel. I remember going through the drive through to get corn dogs before heading to the Aero Drive-In for movies when I was a kid. Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back etc... I think I even saw Porkey's there... This was before my family moved to Lemon Grove. Anyways.... I moved back to El Cajon decades later for a brief time. I still remember when I was living on Oakdale in the Compound, and the night that some dirty tweeker shot the El Compadre dude... He was back at work a week or two later too... Can't keep a good Taco Pusher down.. I assure you that any Cockroaches at El Compadre only serve to add to the flavor of whatever you're eating. I would put the Carne Asada Fries among the top 10 in San Diego. Once in a while when coming back into town late, I will still stop here because it's the only place aside from Jacks, that is open at 3am, and is on the way. A concoction like this could only be born of a border town. It is a part of the soul of San Diego. As matter O fact, we in San Diego can make anything into a Taco or Burrito, I've seen it done... Curry Tacos, Spaghetti Burritos... This place is A-OK as far as Taco Shops go.

I've been coming here for over 15 years and pretty much always order the bean and cheese burrito, which is divine. The Carne Asada fries and taquitos are pretty amazing too.

I am paying due respect to my taco-and-diet pepsi place...Amen. This place is so good, that I can barely get through the drive thru before ripping open my taco and dumping hot sauce on it in their shifty parking lot. Yummy!

The carne asada fries here are amazing especially after late drunken nights the only reason it doesnt get a 5 is because most of the burritos ive tried here are average and i like to switch it up and not get carne asada fries everytime

Took forever to receive food but that's only one issue, tried a super carne asada burrito. Overwhelmed with watery sour cream and guacamole. Little cheese and beans all on one end of the burrito. Shockingly little actual carne asada and difficult to tell the quality because the everything was swimming in thin sour cream. Will not be back.

I used El Compadre Taco Shop to cater my fiance's 30th birthday and mine as well! Both times, the food was awesome. The prices are extremely reasonable (less than $10 pp for carne asada, pollo asado, camarones, rice, beans, tortillas, and pico, with all trimmings [lettuce, onions, cheese, sour cream, cilanro, lemons]!!) and the food is delicious--especially the shrimp! My one suggestion is to get the mini flour tortillas instead of the regular-sized ones which are equally delicious, but massive. No complaints about El Compadre at all. A perfect solution for any catering event. Will definitely use again.

My only experience of this place was the chicken tacos, which to me were not that great. I like the chicken in my tacos to be chopped up not just one big piece. I did enjoy the cheese that they put on it though, not sure what kind it is. Also the rice and beans here are pretty good.

Excellent, cheap, flavorful authentic Mexican food. Great place. Do yourself a favor and try it. The fun colored building is a bonus.

I'm hooked on their Carne Asada plate. That's all I ever order, so my assessment might be of limited use. This place is open 24 hours, has a drive-thru and most importantly great food and generous portions. Their carne asada is among the best I've had. Also they take credit cards without charging an extra fee.

Tough because they are alright, but there is just two better places near by them so I give them 2.5. Ritas is a little better they got a 3 and Estradas is a lot better and got a 4. if you want to get it quick and back on the road go here good alternative because the other good mexican food places near 2nd don't have a drive through.

I LOVE this place! Carne Asada Fries are SO good. My brother orders the fries so much the guy at the window knows my brother and asks how he's doing. I'm tempted and excited everytime I see the place isn't packed (I drive by the place at least twice a day). I have tried the other Mexican places (I live like 5 minutes from El Compadre) and within that vicinity nothing compares. My friends have told me that the cheese that use is authentic and that they don't see it in other taco shops that often. As far as service goes I think you should go there around midnight because the man working there at night is the cheerful and energetic. Strange considering during the day the lady is cranky and sluggish, but I don't care cause the food is still great. I recommend that if its your first time you should go to the walk up window to order because the menu is so huge that you could be pissing people off trying to make up your mind in the drive thru. I know I have and I've been here almost weekly!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
