Pretty much everything on the menu is deep fried with a thick layer of bread, which takes away from tasting what you're eating. They could use low quality fish and I wouldn't know. I don't enjoy paying more than $10 per dish for this kind of experience. Not all is lost. The ocean view is remarkable. The veggie burger is surprisingly tasty. Also, you can request cajun fries. Where this place needs improvement, don't be stingy and give free refills, add more non-fried options to the menu, and carry sriracha (WTF uses hot sauce anymore??).

Good points: fast, good slaw, nice view, cold beer, nice service Not so good points: famous fried fish - nice batter but the fish was fishy. 3 stars because I expect a fish place fried fish to taste better and taste less fishy - after all that is the main event. Maybe that is the nature of Alaskan pollack but being from the east coast, cod just tastes better.

The View was amazing!! The food was a bit over priced and ehhhh ok! I gave it 3 stars because the service was pretty good I would have to say. But not likely to go back unless they can make some better clam chowder soon.

I live in LA and when I get a craving for their fish tacos I will drive here. I'm talking about the deep fried ones. It's a pretty big size taco, it's not your average small size ones you get at other places. I haven't really ordered anything else here but I obviously don't come here often. I usually get the fish tacos and the clam chowder which is pretty good.

Only one gluten free thing on the menu - grilled fish taco in a corn tortilla. It was good, a nice mix of sauces and slaw, but didn't knock my socks off. The waitress was nice; we were the only people in there on a rainy afternoon. Would I return? Yes.

The food options in Carlsbad are severely limited, but given that the Harbor Fish Cafe had plenty of open seating for my pup, we gave this joint a try. My friends and I shared a clam chowder and a 3-fish plate. The waiter was like "they're 'this' big" but they came out to be THIS big! I mean there's a ton more batter in the strip than there is fish, but still, who doesn't like anything fried? I only wish they had outdoor lamps since it was quite cold at dinnertime. The seating available for people with dogs is a little awkward--they're essentially benches without a seat facing you so one of us had to pull up a chair so we wouldn't be three little Asian girls sitting in a row. Too bad the table is on an incline so my little friend was practically standing up in order to reach the food. Waiter service is friendly! Wish they did a little more recycling and composting since all food is brought out on disposable plates/utensils.

Love the view the food the friendly staff...we eat here every time we're in Carlsbad!

I've gone to this place since 1981. I love the view and the nostalgia of going there but the food has changed the last few years. The clam chowder, grilled sourdough, and fish and chips are still wonderful but the changes that they have made elsewhere sadden me. The shrimp cocktail is awful now. It used to be a fave when they used all the tiny shrimp. This is a beach side casual restaurant so we're not trying to get five star shrimp but this change is a step down. I've heard so many people complain about it and the servers have no explanation as to why the changes have been made. I still go, but not as often because the food is just not as good as it was. I have hope that they will read reviews and bring back the old food as I do love this restaurant.

The location is really the best part. Right on the coast on Carlsbad beach, you really can't beat it. They also have their own beer, which is really cool. We had the fish tacos and clam chowder. Both were pretty good. The chowder needed quite a bit of salt and pepper added to it, and the tacos weren't as spicey as they claimed they were supposed to be, but they still tasted good, and were really filling. We'll still go back.

This place was okay. The batter on the fry was pretty good for fish and chips but the actual fish was lousy. We also ordered a grilled fish taco that was over cooked. Drinks are expensive and not refillable. Service was good and the view was nice.

Needed a mid afternoon something and had been walking Joey by the beach, so stopped at Harbor Cafe. I thought I could take Joey with me onto the outside patio, but they told me I would have to tie him up outside the table area. Harumph. Ain't no way Joey's going for that. So got some food to go. They are known for their fish and chips so that's what I got, with a side of cole slaw. The white fish, whatever it was, seemed very fresh and was cooked through (don't give me no sushi), but the batter was dry and uninteresting. The fries were also dry. The cole slaw was good. The best thing about this place is that it is right at the beach and the view of the sunset is pretty great. I probably wouldn't come back here for the fish. But I'd come back for the sunset.

Holy fish! Stopped by for a quick lunch on a beautiful day. Restaurant is located right next to the beach which is nice. I ordered a cup of the Carlsbad clam chowder which I was pleasantly surprised with. Since my family is from Cape cod I find myself being a clam chowder snob and I really did enjoy this one. Boyfriend ordered 2pc fish & chips which were huge! I ordered the fish taco that came with Cajun fries which were really yummy. The fish taco was ok, it was stuffed with a bunch of shredded cheddar cheese which I felt overwhelmed the taste of the fish so I ended up picking all of the cheese out and stopped eating the tortilla half way through also. They also don't offer refills on drinks... So if you drink a lot of liquid during your meal get a large drink.

This is my favorite place to come for clam chowder, I highly recommend paying the little bit extra to add cheese and sourdough toast, it really completes it. My husband and I usually order the fish and chips and a chowder and share which is plenty, even after working up an appetite playing on the beach. The only reason I don't give a full five stars is because our drinks are never refilled unless we ask and it is a bit pricey for what it is, but that doesn't stop me from coming back because the food is wonderful.

Fried Fish. How can you not love Fried anything? Nestled near the waterfront with an amazing view, this place benefits because of it's great location. After a two hour drive, I was starving and we were finally going to get to eat. Harbor FIsh has an extensive list of fried goodness. We had a few plates from the menu. I was ready for something spectacular from what everyone was saying..I ended up getting something pretty good instead. The portions are large and the fish does taste fresh..(no fishy smells)..but the batter seemed extra greasy to me. We had the fish and fries for one dish and that put me over the top for feeling bloated. Maybe old oil? I dunno. This place gives a valiant effort in trying to offer the ultimate fish and chips, but falls a bit short from the greasy batter. Give this place a shot though and make your own decision.

Great service in a great location. We aren't fried food people and this is a fish and chips joint, so we opted for grilled fish tacos. Very well seasoned and cooked and the portions are HUGE. A taco is the size of a burrito! Overall a good little beach side find.

  • Tanna T.

My mom has limited mobility, so it was convenient to find a parking spot in the public lot near this casual restaurant that overlooks the ocean. We ordered clam chowder, fish tacos and the fish & chips. All of the food is served on paper products (I hate eating w/ a plastic folk/spoon at a restuarnt). The service was good. The food was pretty good. The location was great. A bit pricy for paper/plastic, and caters to tourists.

  • Roger P.

Over priced mostly fried food and small portions. You can't even get free soda refills and the service is mediocre.

Came on a Thursday and had the special for that day. Fish and chips. I was able to switch the chips for clam chowder, which was delicious!! The fish was perfect! Perfect breading. Wasn't over powering or too greasy. We also got a bucket or coronitas which was pretty decently priced. This was a great experience. Inside and outside seating. Awesome Carlsbad view!! Great area!! Would recommend to anyone!!

  • Karen P.

If I am going to eat fried fish and shrimp I want to enjoy it. This was very greasy and totally bland. Neither the fish or batter were seasoned at all -- a total waste of calories. Setting nice overlooking ocean and service was good and fast which gets them an extra star. Food itself deserved just 1 star.

    (2)
  • Nicole F.

We had excellent service and with kids that is very much appreciated, but the food is terrible. Chowder tastes like a dry mix they add water to. Blackened swordfish was meh.....fish and chips weren't the worse but nothing shy of so-so. Kids Mac n cheese was Kraft from a box I'm certain. Seems like the type of place that attracts tourist like myself because the location is ideal and within walking distance to several hotels, but next time I will drive if I have to for a better meal!

  • Rebecca T.

I had the grilled fish taco. It's just OK. They charged $13 for one single taco, even though it's huge, I don't think that would justify it. On top of that, the fish tasted dry and under-seasoned. i felt like I was eating tuna... Don't order the grilled fish taco! The deep fried fish and shrimp were okay though, not too bad. But still, food was overpriced. The restaurant is pretty much half outdoor half indoor, and I heard they only open when it is not raining. The seats weren't too comfy either. Not sure how long this place has been in business, but it looks pretty rundown, same for the bathroom. However, if you feel like eating some fish by the ocean in Carlsbad, this might not be a bad choice. But if you really want good seafood, go somewhere else, or just stop by the grocery store and have a seafood meal from your own kitchen!

  • Erika M.

Great place for fish and chips, the clam chowder soup is also delicious. The outdoor patio has an amazing view to the ocean and right next to it is a dog friendly space. Very nice atmosphere. I would give 5star but the prices are a bit high.

  • Bryan G.

Good place to chill on a Saturday morning, with clam chowder and a fish taco. It is also right on the beach. Good service.

    (5)
  • Michael M.

Don't waste your time... The food is not that good. The batter is heavy and soaks up the grease too much and it lacks taste (battered fish). It's just average at best. The clincher is the service. We purchased a good order of food and we were treated horribly by the cashier. He was rude, angry, and argumentative. Even his co-workers seemed a bit embarrassed, but nobody stopped him and we left our table. A horrible experience... Despite that, we ordered food to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. We were disappointed.

Seriously great fish & chips. I added the 2 jumbo shrimp and the cocktail sauce was fantastic! Plus you can eat on the grass and look at the ocean. So yummy.

A good place in Carlsbad for fish & chips and clam chowder. I love the outdoor seating and the view of the beach is great! It is dog friendly and always a fun time on a warm night, great for people watching. have gone many times and will continue to go

Best fish and chips! My grandfather asks my mother to drive him out here just about once a week for fish and chips because they are so good. I finally tried them today and I must agree that they are simply the best fish and chips I have ever had. The pieces of fish are quite long, maybe 6-8". The coating is crispy and rich, and the fish falls right apart and melts in your mouth because it is so tender. My mother and I each got a one piece fish plate. She got coleslaw and I got fries and we went halfsies on the sides. The fries are decent and crispy. Coleslaw was so-so, kind of bland and too chunky for my tastes. There is no indoor seating, as this is just a little shack with a covered patio. Parking varies but will surely be bad if it's good beach weather.

  • Cedar C.

This place is horrible... We expected the food to be great from the pictures people posted. It was less than tasteful and completely over priced. The staff that deals with the public seem to be puppets controlled by the so called management from the kitchen. The food put out by the kitchen could be better presented by a five year old. The kitchen staff should be embarrassed for the lack of pride they put behind their product. In this day in age with all of the new local restaurants opening up that put everything in to the quality presentation and flavor into their product this place should REALLY be worried. Total disappointment. If you want a good meal try any other restaurant.

Don't read this review if you want to know about the food; the customer service was so bad I didn't even get there. I happen to be in Carlsbad for a weekend and wanted to try this place. It was early evening on Mother's Day so I was surprised that there was no wait. I was sat almost immediately, even given the option of one nice tall stool or a seat outside as I was only a party of one. The family beside me was ordering, so I figured I would be next. No, the waitress walked off. Ok, so maybe I am not in her section and I continued to wait. Nice people around me that I chatted up to see what I should order. That table across from then paid their check to the same waitress, so I tried to get her attention. No, the waitress walked off. At that point, my desire to sit and try all the items other Yelpers had raved about (especially the clam chowder) was done. I brought my menu up to the desk to inform the waitress that she bypassed me in the corner. I considered ordering to-go since it was the service that was bad, but that same waitress gave me a snarky comment as I walked away. I thought this was a casual, fun, family spot; a staple in Carlsbad. Look, YOU made a mistake; own up and apologize. I was not rude when I informed the three of you standing at the hostess desk that I had not been served. I was nice and I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not always rude to the customers. On the busiest day of the year for a lot of restaurants, you should be mindful of how you treat your patrons. I'll be back in the future and let you know what I think of the food. In the meantime, I went to Jay's down the street and got some delicious clam chowder.

3.5... What a great place to grab some fresh Fish 'n Chips!!! I had been here a couple times already and have enjoyed its convenience as a local. After a sunset run, I decided to get a small clam chowder and a harbor fish combo (fish 'n chips and 1/2 order of breaded shrimp). There are 2 sides to the outdoor establishment. It wasn't busy and was given the option to sit in the heated or ocean view patio. Opted to sit on the ocean side. Tables are tiny, and it was even a tight squeeze for me! The chowder lacked the depth and density, but had good flavor. I didn't get much clam chunks (was I supposed to???). The shrimp portions and size were generous, and I felt the taste was OK. I would have preferred a thicker batter for the shrimp. We were given 1 huge piece of fish and this was my fav of the night. The batter was thick and crunchy, and the fish was very flaky. I would probably order just the fish next time. The employees are really nice and provided service with a smile. Def a casual place so don't dress the part. You're able to see this place from CB Blvd (coast highway) and there's a small parking lot right behind the restaurant. Additionally, there is ample street parking along the CB strand or in the nearby neighborhoods. Total with tip was $21.

Really casual atmosphere. The fish and chips special on Thursdays is great, though. Only downside is that a ton of tourists are always floating around this area.

If you want to feel like you're in SoCal, this is the place to do it. The view is great, the food is fresh, and anything you want seems to be there. My biggest drawback is the price. I'm not a huge seafood person, but I love fish and chips, and it's darn good. The clam chowder also gets high marks. Shoot, I even love their grilled cheese. This is a great little place to go with out of town guests when you're not too cold to sit near the ocean. There's no easy parking nearby when so many people are enjoying the nice weather, too, but a little perseverance really pays off.

  • Tom B.

Good, fish tasted fresh. As long as you are craving fried. Oh and kinda crummy they don't offer free drink re-fills

    (5)
  • Edward T.

I'm giving only 4 stars because I like to avoid fried food, and most of the menu is fried fish or shrimp, and imitation crab. They do have a grilled fish taco plate though (about $13), and daily catch fish that range just under $20 a plate. So I had the grilled fish taco plate and it was really good, the piece if fish looks not processed, and extends beyong the circumference of the regular sized corn tortilla by a few inches, so you only reall need 1 to call it a complete lunch, plus it comes with a generous order of cole slaw (or other side). The only other thing was the menu says they have "hot herbal tea" which makes it sound so great, but all it is is cheap Lipton, really flavorless (I had the chamomile).

  • Dani J.

I love this spot! The fish and chips are tasty, so is their jumbo shrimp platter. The staff is friendly, the restaurant is as clean as it can be, being steps away from the sand, and the view is unbeatable for a casual lunch or dinner spot. Their tartar sauce is good, too. Oh, so is their clam chowder (but I noticed you have to eat it fast, because as it cools, it thins). Things to note: no free refills on drinks, tight seating spots.

  • Ann G.

Nice view of the ocean, friendly service, nice portions. We splurged and had the special of the day. Halibut meal and Mahi meal. Very tasty and well prepared. Pretty much the Pricest on menu at $17.95 & $24.95. Most plate items $10-15. Soup & salad less. Really liked the clam chowder. Relaxing. Recommend you stop if your in the area.

Had not been here in awhile. We used to live a few blocks away. It has definitely gotten pricey and they don't serve shark any more, too bad it was good. Service was a little slow on drink refills.

  • Summer B.

The Combo salad is delish and the Fish combo is tasty! The house brew is really good as well! The prices are very reasonable! We will defiantly be back here!

A beach joint. Not fine cuisine but casual and fun. Young and engaging wait staff and a great view.

  • Alisa A.

Great service, great view...blackened halibut, clam chowder and shrimp cocktail were excellent. They were quick and kind about fixing our order when we received the wrong one initially. Would definitely visit again if ever in the area again.

  • Jessica B.

Harbor Fish Cafe is great! Food is amazing and the view of the ocean is gorgeous! The cost of a meal is a little pricey, but worth it based on the quality of the food and view. If you have never been, try something new and treat yourself! I truly believe you will enjoy it very much.

  • Shelby L.

This review would EASILY get 3-4 stars however when you see the server take out the trash, then bring back a nasty trash can and go STRAIGHT to picking up a guests plate and serving it, red flag. Thank God I didn't see him do that until after I already ate my meal. Also there are no free refills...strange? Food: Fish and chips...Mmmmmm mmmm mmm Good food, maybe just make sure that young man serving the food is washing his hands, because I'm sure that's not the first time he's done that.

    (2)
  • Lowrey K.

I would give 1 star, but never tasted a thing. 5 minutes after we had been seated the server came to take out order. He then informs us they are out of fries and clam chowder. This was Friday at 6:30 and only 3 tables had been people. Such a fail. Also, I love just an hour south in IB and all the bars and restaurants there that offer out door seating have patio heaters. We too are on the ocean, get it together! We left and went to a warm place downtown!

  • Corey W.

This place is the utter definition of "just ok". There were things I liked, such as they post the time of when the sun is going to set each day so you can eat dinner at sunset. The service was relatively slow, and we had Clam Chowder (I'd give it about a 7 out of 10) and then we shared one of the large meals with battered shrimp and fish. It was just ok as well, my mom had a half a shrimp instead of the whole thing in it which we're assuming is a mistake, and the fish strips were huge. It was definitely way too much food for the 2 of us, which is always better. If we would have known better, we would have just shared the 1 plate. Fish isn't really cheap, so it would have been nice to know how big it was going to be before we ordered everything. It wouldn't be the first place I went, but I wouldn't turn it down if I was craving it and we were right by the beach either.

    (3)
  • Jennifer L.

I was in downtown Carlsbad to visit a friend and she told me about this place. We shared the half fish/half shrimp combo with fries on the side. So. Damn. Good. This place definitely has the surfer-beach vibe going. Great place to hit as the sun sets. Affordable prices, too. Try this place!

  • Donald E.

I have been going for about 30 years and the food has always been good. I love the fish and chips they are huge. Over the years it has a little pricier as Carlsbad has become more of a tourist spot. Overall still good food with a great location

    (4)
  • Rebecca W.

We come here every time we're in The area. This place has the best real estate in Carlsbad. Beach front dining. Oh, the smells and sounds, it's messy and loud and wonderful. Its always packed, but I've never waited for more than 10 minutes. The portions are huge and fairly priced. The fish seems fresh and the beer is cold. Enough said.

    (4)
  • Ashley P.

Best fish n chips ever!! I love their clam chowder, it's amazing!! You can get a great salad instead of fries too!! Love this place!!

    (5)
  • Liam F.

It's all fried to me. And the tartar sauce is solid. The fish and chips are good and rib sticking and cooked well. Honestly can't speak to the rest of the menu, because I only come here for the fish and chips....

    (4)
  • Mike R.

Lets get a few things straight.......this is a casual hole-in-the-wall place next to the beach that serves some delicious fish n' chips. The kind of place you stop at after a day at the beach when you're all sandy, sun burnt, tired, and famished. If you want a cup of coffee then Starbucks is across the street. If you want non-greasy fish n' chips, then order grilled fish. (non-greasy and fish and chips are rarely used in the same sentence FYI) If you want cheap food then get out of Carlsbad and away from the beach for that matter. If you want a beautiful view of the ocean and a huge plate of good old-fashioned fish and chips then go to Harbor Fish Cafe. -Mike Rounds

    (5)
  • Brian L.

Mediocre at best. My whole family left hungry. There's only so much fried, frozen fish you can eat out, knowing you could have done the same at home for a fraction of the price. They missed one of the kids meals, and never came around to check in needed more ketchup, and when you need that to liven up the flavor of FISH, you know you're in the wrong place. They pack 'em in because of the location, but you're better off walking a little further for a REAL fish dinner.

    (1)
  • Valerie P.

The view of the ocean was great! It was a little pricey for what we got which was claim chowder, 1 fish taco meal, and a soft drink (no refills) X2. The service was okay. Will probably check out other places if we come back to the area.

    (3)
  • Travis R.

Fish taco plate was solid! Fried fish, light, flakey. Salsa on the side was very tasty as well! 4 stars! Worth the stop

    (4)
  • Shannon H.

This place is amazing! It looks very touristy and pricey (and there are a lot of tourists during tourist season haha), but the prices aren't high at all especially for the amount of food that you get. The daily fish changes often which is fantastic. The shrimp, fried clams and fried fish are to die for!! And the clam chowder was very good and fresh. Great place that is often over looked because it seems like a tourist trap, but coming from a local let me tell you it isn't!! Don't miss this place!!!!

  • Veronica D.

You can't beat the open air cafe and ocean view at sunset. Going near closing hours will ensure you don't have a wait. The host allowed us to pick any seat. The location and atmosphere earned the fourth star. It's the perfect spot for beach day eating. If it were the food alone I would give three stars. The grilled taco was a nice large portion, the flavor was overly spiced and had just a hint of the traditional taco sauce in a few bites. The fries are your typical side dish, nothing special about them. The clam chowder was a winner, it's available in a cup or bowel. Don't order wine unless you are ok with the small plastic bottle and drinking out of a plastic cup. I would opt for a bottle of beer. After all, it is a beach side fish cafe. The food was served quickly and the service was attentive.

    (4)
  • Suzi F.

Great atmosphere / view and the food is always good but they need to work on the beer selection. Their label is a pilsner and then they only have Mexican beer. No craft or local brewery beer to choose from :(

  • Chris P.

Ive been coming here for 28 years and have always loved the food, atmosphere and entire Harbor Fish experience. Thant changed yesterday when I walked in, was told to grab a table, then sat there for 20 minutes without a soul even recognizing I was there. So i dragged my happy little party of 4 out and vowed never to look back. Unfortunately there is a thing called customer service and when you have none, and your employees blow of customers, well thats a bad thing. Thanks for almost 30 years of awesome fish and killer clam chowder..but unfortunately my loyalty for 12 buck fish and chips can easily be found elsewhere...

Went here for lunch a month ago with a friend. We ordered the halibut, but I can honestly say it wasn't. I have worked for a fish distributor and know something about fish. What I ordered was not halibut but some other cheaper fish, possibly Swai. I can't believe they would charge so much for a cheap fish that was frozen and defrosted. Would not recommend eating here. Service was ok.

  • Mitch K.

Get the Fish and Chips! They were really good and inexpensive. 3 piece fish and chips was 15 bucks. We shared it between 3 people and were happy. They also sell a home made pilsner too. Great place to go check out the sunset too.

  • Stephen G.

Super location but it is all downhill from there. Bland, overpriced food served on paper and plastic. Especially disappointing: the "What We're Famous For" Fish and Chips. This place needs an all around upgrade.

    (1)
  • Josh S.

The food is the only thing saving this place, for me. I often go to the beach at Tamarack, so this spot is a natural (close) choice for food. Every time I visit, three things happen. One, I'm greeted by a trashcan at the patio entrance, then get to wait by it for my takeout. Nice. Two, While at the ordering window, a waitress inevitably shoves in front of me to lay down a credit card to be processed. Three, THEY LEAVE A STACK OF CUSTOMER CREDIT CARDS SITTING IN THE WINDOW! I've even uploaded a photo of them (yes, it's that bad).

    (2)
  • Ripa R.

The stars are for the location. Greasy, greasy, greazy fish and chips tastes like old, old cooking oil was used. Very close in flavor to greazy, old sweat socks. If you can identify the fish, you get an advanced degree in oceanography. Expensive too. Makes me embarrassed my home town can't come up with lots of great, inexpensive places for fish like San Francisco has or many oceanside spots on the eastern seaboard. Poor tourists. What must they think? I didn't finish my two piece meal but still had heartburn for days. I told my daughter it made me understand bulimia. I really wish I could have thrown it up.

    (2)
  • Mister O.

I wasn't impressed. The fish and chips I ordered were so greasy and tasteless. The fish was so heavily breaded and deep fried that there was barely any fish there. I will not be going back.

    (1)
  • Justin A.

Good place, and great location. I have been going here for years. The staff is friendly. Zucchini is yummy. If your looking for some greasy, traditional, deep friend fish and chips this is the place. Great time to go is weekdays right before sunset.

A couple of tips..don't go close to closing and don't expect to get certain things on the menu. I am gluten intolerant and I assumed I was safe with fish tacos, if they had grilled tacos, they were out. I couldn't substitute a side for corn tortillas to go with my seared ahi, I couldn't even pay for corn tortillas unless breaded fish came in them??? Ok. My ahi came and it was completely cooked through - i told the waitress i didn't want it and I didn't want to wait for more ahi as i was with three other people. My son had asked for a side a ranch when his food was first delivered and the waitress was busy talking with the other waiter and apparently eating her food that I had to go up to the window and get it myself. When the bill came that was a mess and I had to ask them to recalculate the final charges and we're still overcharged I am not a tourist and I feel like this place banks on tourists to treat and charge them whatever they want. I am a business owner and would never treat anyone this way.

Service was fine, location was fine, food was 100% meh (and expensive, but you're paying for a tourist spot on the beach).

Okay, so this place is terrible. I wish it wasn't. I live in an apartment very close- right down the sidewalk about 50 yards away. I've tried it 4 times in my two years of living down here. Each time I've tried with this place it's been with friends or family visiting for a little Carlsbad vacation time. Harbor Fish is kind of the obvious choice because of the amazing location. Right next to the little grassy area, ocean view, and directly off the main sidewalk. But even for an outdoorsy-picknicky location, it's just kind of grubby and uninspired. The service was fine each time, but the food... I mean it's really terrible. I could go into detail about the bland, white fish served in nearly every dish, the old-tasting salad- the list goes on and on. I had some coffee, asked for some cream, and was brought out the non-dairy powered type. Have any half-n-half? No. Milk? No. In that kitchen, you don't have milk anywhere? No we don't. So, there you have it. A shack, with a perfect location that draws in heavy tourist foot traffic, that serves bland fish, soupy clam chowser, bad coffee, and $30 lobsters in baskets and paper plates.

my coworker took me here for my birthday, and i LOVED it! they're famous for their fish & chips, but i didn't feel like having fried food - so i ordered the ahi tuna sandwich. I was expecting small pieces cut up and placed in between two pieces of bread, what did i get?! Holy cow, I got an entire slab of ahi tuna (yes, a SLAB!) placed in between samich buns with lettuce and tomatoes. YUMMMMMMY!!! wait, let me back up - did i tell you i had their clam chowder too? Mmmmm, it was pretty good. OK so anyways back to the samich :) i ate half and i was SUPER full, so i brought the other half home for my husband. things always taste better when they're fresh, but he still liked it. the order comes with fries too, but i didn't have much room left for that.. if I'm ever back in the area I'm totally eating here again! the beach view is breathtakingly beautiful!

Love going here when the SUN is out and sit out on the deck. Love the fish tacos there, it is very tasty. And it is always nice to have a bucket Coronatis with the fish. Tables are a bit small, and some times it can be a little wait for a seat but it is worth the wait. When you are done you can take a stroll along the beach.

Love eating here. They have dog bowls for thirsty pups and great food. This is what a local place is supposed to be like. And it is for locals in the heart of downtown touristy Carlsbad. Love it.

i know what my dad would have said --"a whole wheat tortilla with a slab of fried fish is like closing the barn door AFTER all the animals are out." wouldn't know, actually. i had the fish and chips. everything was hot and fresh (okay and greasy but as the wife unit (JODI) pointed out we only go there once a year). big son (KEEGAN) had the combo plate (fish and shrimp). daughter (JULIANA) had the clam chowder. small son (WYATT) had fish and chips too. everybody left full and happy. good time had by all. time it right and you can eat and watch the sunset over the blue PACIFIC. life is good.

Great view from the seating outside. Like I said before, Im not a fishy person so Im saying this on a slightly bias review. I didn't think their service was bad, it just wasn't great. Their fish was really oily/greasy which made it hard for me to stomach. But their own brand of beer is refreshing when you're watching the sunset.

I wasn't impressed. Food was alright and service was good but too pricey for such a casual environment where the food is served on paper plates and eaten with plastic utensils.

Strolling down Carlsbad Blvd. you'll find this unassuming joint and not think anything of it. But sit down, enjoy the fabulous view, order a beer and some of the best fish tacos I've ever tasted. One is enough because the portions are huge! The batter is tasty, served with a special sauce and a side of seasoned fries. If you're ever in the area this place is must. And a few feet away is the entrance to the beach which is a plus. The only drawback is the parking...there is none! We had to park in the residential neighborhood a couple of blocks away.

Service was really great, the staff was really attentive. I got a hamburger, wish they would have offered cheese. My mom got the fish and chips and she loved it. The boyfriend got a GIANT fish taco and he said it was amazing. The bill was about $40 for all of us and the view was awesome.

My husband and I were in the area and I was craving fish and chips so we decided to try this place. We normally go to Harbor F&C in Oceanside (Totally awesome!) but thought we would try something new. Verdict: Disappointed (Food) Service: Excellent. We had a really friendly and wonderful waitress, however her fantastic service was overshadowed by our disappointment in the food. Food: I guess we were expecting really good fish and chips - we ordered the fish & chips with fried shrimp combo and... 1. VERY greasy. Had to use a paper towel to wipe away the grease. 2. Weird taste. Seemed like they used very old oil to fry the fish and shrimp in. Did not taste fresh and was not super crispy. 3. My fish had a bone in it. I was not expecting it at all as that the fish are usually boneless for Fish & Chips dish. It was really gross to accidentally chew on it. The meal was mediocre and we will not return.

Two stars at best. The "generous" shrimp starter was by no means generous. The fried fish taco was not impressive; and that's what the place is known for. Spent $50 on a meal for two and am disappointed.

This place is a guilty pleasure for me. I lived in Carlsbad most of my life and still come back to this place now that I've moved away. The most important thing to know about this place before deciding to make a stop here, is that it is NOT on the healthier end of the scale. The fish is tempura battered and fried, the french fries are thin cut and fried, the clams and shrimp are fried, I'm sure if you asked them too, your lemonade could be fried. If you can get passed the lube and an oil change aspect of it, you will find great fish, delicious battering, and great side dishes. The clam chowder, while not my favorite, is still well done, creamy without being too thick, and well seasoned. My personal favorite dish to get is the seafood combo plate, one piece of fish and shrimp. My only gripes are that there aren't free refills (which isn't that bad) and that the prices have risen tremendously here since I was a wee lad. My father used to tell me how a 3 piece fish and chips was a buck when he was a kid. I remember it being around $5 when I was younger, now it tops around $15 for the same. Yet, I still come back again and again. Greasy, pricey, yet worth it all.

We were hanging out in the park nearby and still hungry father lunch, so gave this place a try for a take out. Ordered the single fish and chips with chips extra crispy and they were! The fish is white fish, so not a whole lot of texture or firmness, but was ok. The batter was crunchy and not overly done, tho the homemade tarter sauce was more on the bland side. A bit pricey, but that goes with the location.

I will never go here again...... Not only was it the worst fish and chips ive ever had. It costed 13 bucks for one piece of fish a side of coleslaw ($4.25, and the size of a small cup of ice cream) and a small cup of chowder. The service was nice and did nothing wrong, The seating made me feel like I was just one of the sheep being herded in and out of a tourist trap. The food is just overpriced and sucks. I am willing to bet they don't even try just because of the location. Kind of a drag. I'm from Seattle, they have allot of amazing fish and chip places there. I guess i will just know better next time.

Had some friends visiting Legoland so ended up meeting up and eating here. The views are great if you are sitting out by the patio facing the water. It's not a fancy place, just like a shack really, 2 servers are madly rushing about trying to get orders in, drinks to the table, bring food out etc etc. With the main courses most come with your choice of fries, clam chowder, coleslaw -- at first we asked for a variety but once we sampled the clam chowder, we ended up swapping and getting more of the chowder. The chowder was really quite good -- thick but not glucky and flavorful. I'm not into eating soup the consistency of glue. I was excited seeing the chowder was quite good, but when the main courses arrived, I was less than enthused. My special of the evening was grilled halibut -- small piece of fish for almost 20 bucks and it was DRY. I think the fish and chips was pretty reasonable since you get 4 gigantic pieces -- a bit much if you ask me of fried foods -- if you can finish it. The fish and chips mix with shrimp was also a huge portion -- 2 pieces of really big battered fish and some battered shrimp. I've had better fish and chips for sure, but if you're here it's usually because you're on vacation or just wanting to enjoy the view. Service is really lousy -- had to ask for drinks a few times and then not checking back to see if everything is okay. It had the feel of a chain restaurant or even fast food place -- but even chain restaurants have slightly better service than this. I wouldn't come back again by choice.

Love coming here, what a treat! If you're in Carlsbad this place is a must try! The views here are gorgeous, and the service is excellent. The fish tacos are huge, though they require lots of salsa or tartar sauce to get the flavor level up. The fries definitely require the seasoning (ask for it), and if you get the Clam Chowder (which is a must) ask for cheese on top. There is a side of sourdough toast...definitely go for it, it's great for dipping in the chowder. I always make it a point to come here whenever I'm heading to Carlsbad or SD, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

The fish and portion size reminds me of the great Pismo Fish and Chips if that helps anyone at all. If not- the white fish is light and crisp and as are the fries. The clam chowder is the best I have had in Carlsbad. I eat here for lunch at least once when ever I am in town for work.

My dad came to visit and is a big fan of fish and chips. I heard from a friend that this place was legit so I decided to take him after a day at the beach. Now, I am NOT a fish person. I don't even like shrimp. That being said I tasted their fried shrimp and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm even contemplating going there now for some (something I would have never thought I would ever do in my life.) MOAR SHRIMP NOW!

My friend took me to Harbor Fish Cafe because she said that their fish tacos were awesome. I was so excited to try this place out since I've lived in Carlsbad for some time now. We walked in to the cafe and were greeted by the hostess who gave us our menus and said to find a seat. The place wasn't packed so we sat in a booth where we could get the most sun. Our waitress greeted us, gave us our drinks, and took our order. 10 minutes goes by, but we didn't mind because we were enjoying the view of the ocean. Another 10 minutes goes by and we still did not receive our food. We saw that a table who got there after us (and ordered the same things) were already eating. We politely asked another waitress (because our original waitress never came back) if our food would be coming out soon since we have been waiting for quite some time. She walked over to the other servers and they all gave us a *WTF* look. When we finally got our food, the waitress asked us if we needed anything else. My friend asked for salsa. She never brought us any. My friend walked up to her and politely asked for salsa again. She handed it to my friend and did not say anything. No apologies, nothing. Considering they were not busy, I didn't know what was going on. Maybe they were just having a bad day? I think the best service we got the whole day was the hostess who gave us our bill and told us to have a nice day. My two stars are for the fish tacos that we ordered. They were HUGE and they were definitely yummy. Their seasoned fries were delicious as well. I would be willing to come back once more for the food with hopes that the staff would be more attentive.

The atmosphere couldn't be more perfect. The sea breeze offers a perfect excuse to stop in for some fish & chips after a hot day at the beach. We order the fried zucchini & fish without the chips EVERY TIME. We're both convinced it's the best we've ever had. It can get incredibly busy though, & parking is the worst. But I still say it's worth it.

We'll go with 2 1/2 stars. The hubs and I came here last Friday night. He ordered blackened swordfish, clam chowder and side salad. The fish was overcooked and lacked seasoning. The soup he swore was the Progresso clam chowder he ate as a kid (and he's from CT!) and he didn't like the rasberry walnut salad dressing on his salad. I ordered 1 large fish taco with seasoned fries. The fries were pretty tasty and I enjoyed my fish taco- not the greatest ever but decent and a large portion. It was nice sitting outside with a view of the ocean. The service was spotty- we had several people "waiting" on us which ended up being annoying because multiple people kept checking in and interrupting our date- one right after the other. So in the end- location is good (casual beachfront dining), my food was decent, the hubs didn't really care for his. It's a toss up and seems to be hit or miss.

Good low-key place for seafood. We went last night and it was freezing but the space heater made it bearable. I got the grilled tuna sandwich. It was a nice size piece of meat and pretty flavorful. My one concern was the bread that it was on - it was literally oozing with butter. Fish is a very healthy food, it always surprises me how we go out of our way to add fat and carbs to it. So if you care about such things you should ask for the bread to be dry. The chowder was really good - the sanwhich cam with a small but I wish I had a large. The coleslaw was really good too. My wife had the fish and chips, which she liked but didn't love

Got take out today: fish n chips, the combo plate with fish n shrimp, clam fritters, and clam chowder. The chowder was creamy n flavorful with medium amount of clams. Should not have gotten it to go. It would have been crispier. Well soggy or not, the fish was kinda bland. I dipped it into a lot of tartar sauce and salt. But to their credit, the fish did not taste like it was from frozen. The clam fritters were flavorful. The staff was nice. . The view was amazing. It was fast. I waited only 10 minutes for my orders. Parking spots were not bad. Crowded but I was still able to find parking.

The location of Harbo Fish Cafe is a perfect combination of ocean view, cool breeze, and a relaxed atmosphere. The hubby and a kiddo ate the fish and chips and according to them, the fish lacked flavor, but the tartar sauce helped bump it up. The other kiddo enjoyed and fried shrimp and fries and a bright smile was the response. I too sampled the fried shrimp and the breading was toasty and flavorful. Of all our plates, mine was probably the best, grilled halibut w/cajun seasonings, served with coleslaw, a large chunk of sourdough bread, and a small starter clam chowder. The halibut was a healthy meaty portion that met my expectations. The server was friendly and food was served quickly. I'd go back for the location and the grilled fish or try something other than the fried and breaded fish.

We went on a Saturday afternoon and squeezed into a table. It's a tight and cozy seating arrangement with a great location overlooking the ocean. Based on previous reviews we got the chowder, fish and chips and a blackened mahi taco. Our kids got a corn dog and a shrimp platter. The food came out FAST, real fast, light they are cooking all the time and are ready to turn out the food. The chowder was good, not outstanding, but good. The fish was tasty, big pieces and very crispy. The taco, one big one, was also real tasty. The kids meals were well received by my boys. Lots of fries with all the meals, but pretty standard. Ice in the iced tea melted right away ;-( which is a pet peeve of mine. Service was efficient but pedestrian, not alot of love, just turning tables. $61 with tip.

The Harbor Fish Cafe is superbly located right next to Frazee beach - you can't miss it. The place gives off a distinct 'mom-and-pop-shop' vibe that is reinforced by the history of the place written in the menu. I was feeling summery and pumped for a relaxed meal by the beach. Well, I only partially got my wish. I ordered the fish and chips (the house specialty) which arrived quickly, and burning hot, to the table. The fish is huge (I got a medium plate but another time I would order a small) and accompanied by DELICIOUS tartare sauce. The fries were crisp, well-seasoned and plentiful. So why such an average rating? The service. The whole time I was there I felt pressured to eat and get out. I think each member of the wait staff came by at least once to 'make sure everything is ok' while making it quite clear that I should be going faster. At one point a waiter even pushed the bill closer to me while I was still eating (perhaps he thought I hadn't seen it??). I understand that the restaurant is small and that they need turnover but just let me finish my food, ok??

This is a great place to eat when you're at the beach. The clamchower is very good. Make sure to get the bread with it. The taco is $12, however, it's the size of a burrito, so you're really getting your money's worth. I think people may say it's overpriced, but that's what you pay for fresh seafood. You can taste the difference.

  • Glenn G.

It was OK. The kids like all the bustle and distraction. The fish and chips wasn't so hot for me. I'd probably give it another try because I'll eat almost anything fried. A lot of tourists were there (myself included).

  • Amy L.

This place it just ok for me. The fish was fried well and had a good taste but the tarter sauce seemed to be missing something. I was disappionted with the fried zuccini. They take it a whole zuccini and slice it long ways into 4 or 6 pieces, batter and deep fry them. The way that this was done, left a lot of water still in the zuccini which ended up making the batter fall off, soggy and dripping with water. The fried clams were also just ok for me. I would try this place again, however maybe try a grilled fish. The view is amazing I must say.

I really like this place.. you can get a nice view of the ocean while having some food from the sea. The wooden benches are cute and the ambiance is very dock/wharf-like. It feels like a scurvy sailor might come in to have a bite to eat. You definitely have to like fried food to come here.. and be prepared to feel a little bit gross afterward. I had the clam strips (yum) and clam chowder.. which was pretty good. Not much clam in it, but I may be a snob growing up in an area near New England. My friend had the fish and chips.. also greasy/tasty, but again, pretty intense. We both brought home our dishes to finish at a later time! Couldn't go all the way with 5 stars because it seemed over priced for what it is. If you are going later in the day bring a sweater- it's cold by the water! It was pretty simple to find parking on Ocean Street.. but maybe because it was a monday night around 6? We lazily watched other people exercising in front of the ocean after we finished our meal.

It's a fun place to eat being along the beach and usually pretty busy. The clam chowder is yummy and the tartar sauce is really good, but everything else is just pretty bland and a bit over fried. They need to season their batter or something. I really tried to like this place.

After having come here for 24 yrs, it's not likely that I'll return for my 25 year anniversary. Gone are the days of fresh cut fries and delicious thick cuts of deep fried but fresh fish. Now, all just tastes freshly thawed. With the most recent renovation, the place apparently also lost it's quest for service. Instead, it has been transformed into a hive of worker bees and be assured, you'll not see the same one again until your hefty check.

Location of this restaurant is pretty special, as it sits right near the ocean where you can just walk across the small parking lot and look over the cliff and there you are! It's a beautiful place during the day, but gets pretty chilled in the evenings, but they do take care of the elements a bit with a cover over the eating area and size covers that blunts most any of the wind blowing. We came here recently after what had been a long time to test the fish & chips (we are ever after a good fish & chips meal!) and because it was in the evening, we had the good fortune of finding easy parking right behind the place - normally this is a bit of a challenge during the day. The fish was formed in long strips where there was enough oil on them that adding some vinegar was a must. The batter was overcooked a tad, so thank goodness there was decent tartar sauce to mask that flavor, and the fish fillets themselves were very thin but melted nicely in the mouth. Fries on the other hand were cooked on target and the clam chowder sure smelled good. Over all, the fish & chips aren't good enough to make this a go-to-place. Beyond that though, they actually have some quality fish meals such as halibut, shark and lobster, and with the great view this restaurant provides, you can certainly do worse. Also want to say that the waitress, an older lady I believe, was very nice and helpful and made a "blah" meal enjoyable.

Been lunching (yes I use it as a verb) at Harbor fish cafe for lunch during work. I have only tried their fish and chips so far, but this ranks as one of my top choices for fish and chips. That's saying alot considering I'm not a big fan of seafood in general, but fish and chips are tolerable. One piece of battered and fried fish suffices for me since they are bigger portions. You can even substitute fries for clam chowder. I love that option. Parking in the area behind the cafe can sometimes be a challenge so get their early or later for lunch because lines form quickly here.

Geez, I know this is a tourist place but damn, it could still be decent. Host seemed like he was stoned off his butt, could barely seat us. Took 15 minutes for some tool to come take our orders. And really....no refills on cokes? Bite me. Ordered the "grilled" calamari steak burger. Crappy pre-fried calamari pieces steak. NOT GRILLED and pretty much flavorless except for grease. Yuck. Never again.

Overpriced, overbattered, underseasoned fried food. 3 of us got the fish tacos, and 2 of us got the fish n chips plate. The regular fries have no seasoning--not even salt--on them. The seasoned fries were strangely bland. Perhaps because our tongues were sheathed in grease. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely a time and place for sinful fried food. And usually frying food makes it taste good. I just don't think Harbor Fish Cafe has a good formula. Their batter-to-fish ratio is much too high. I demand less batter! And their batter isn't even good. It's like funnel cake batter. Covered in powdered sugar, it would be delicious. Enclosing fish, not so much. Their fish tacos are nothing like a fish taco should be. The piece of fish sitting in my tortilla was 12 inches long. How can you get a good bite that includes a little of each element when you can barely gnaw through that humongous fried slab? Also, way too much cheese. This place is a tourist trap. Please, locals, let the tourists have their beachside view. The rest of us can bring our own sandwiches.

I live a block away, so this is a place I walk by often when I take the kids to the beach. I decided to stop and try it out one Saturday since it was just me and my little boy. I got a fish taco with a cup of clam chowder. I don't understand the complaints of one of the other reviews. If you don't like good fish tacos, then go back to getting the dinky soggy tacos that most places sell. Although I had to get my food to go half way through lunch, as my son was ready for his nap, I finished my taco and chowder at home and was wishing I could go for another taco. Come to think of it, I'm gonna head over there tomorrow.

After a long day in San Diego, stopping in here for some grub just after sundown was the perfect end to a great day. The fish tacos were out of this world! Thumbs up for sure. The staff was friendly and service was fast. This will definitely be a regular stop for us when traveling from LA to San Diego. As tempting as it may be, I would recommend against heading to Pizza Port afterwards to pick up some brews. See my review for details.

This place is such a hole in the wall. It isn't fancy. The servers aren't snobby. The bathrooms are a little crummy. It's right on the beach. IT'S PERFECT!!! The fish tastes like they caught it ten minutes before they fried it. The clam chowder is SO amazing I want to sneak into the kitchen and steal the recipe. The french fries are basic but they compliment the fish perfectly. Parking is easy to find (unless it's the middle of a Saturday or Sunday) and the view of the ocean is breathtaking. I am having lunch there tomorrow! Friday! I can't wait!!!!

I rarely write reviews, but sometime when a place is so incredibly good, or so incredibly bad, I just can't help myself. I've lived in Oceanside for about six years now. I've been to Harbor Fish and Chips tons of times, but have never been to Harbor Fish. The fish at Harbor Fish and Chips although tasty, is a little too bready for me. I am also one to enjoy a good old fashion burger and fries and like that Harbor Fish and Chips has other choices for my frequent visitors I bring in who don't care for fish. Since I've been coming here so long and have passed Harbor Fish numerous times, I finally decided to stop there one day after skipping lunch at work. Since it was just me, I decided I would try a burger and fries, which I had been craving, and try the fish on my next visit. This place is always packed so coming on a Wednesday afternoon in September was perfect. Probably a total of six 7 customers were in the place. The outdoor patio was nice and somewhat cute. Being right next to the ocean was also nice. Since I just live down the street I ordered my food to go. My mouth was totally watering all the way home. I could not wait to try this burger. And I love my fries with tarter sauce so I was stoked when I found out that this place is famous for their. So I get home and rip the foil from my plate. First thing I notice is that my burger is on some weird kind of bun that I can't recognize. It resembles a Ciabatta roll more than a regular hamburger bun.. That immediately bothers me. Nothing wrong with a Ciabatta roll, or any other kind of bun, but if it's not a standard hamburger bun for a hamburger, it should be stated on the menu. I open my burger to find a huge piece of flavorless, season less meat. I season the meat and return it to the burger. Next, I notice that the one slice of tomato is so small, it only covers a quarter of the meat. I also love onions, but three little slivers just aren't enough for me. I return to the kitchen to slice some tomatoes and onions. I then add them to my burger. I also remove the one wilted lettuce leaf and add some freshly sliced lettuce. I also added mustard to the burger, hoping to give it some kind of flavor. Next, I stare at the fries, almost afraid to touch them. They're skinny, but they can still have flavor and the right crispness, can't they? I grab a few and toss them into my mouth. I love fries, and this is the first time in my life that I have not eaten my fries. They were hot, but also stale. They tasted as if they had been sitting for a long time and then were re-fried. I couldn't believe it! I at least asked for tarter sauce and dipped my fries, hoping that I could find some way for them to be edible. Already damaged fries and not edible when dipped in watered down mayo with pickle juice. I mean, how do you screw up tarter sauce? I took one more bite of the burger and just couldn't do it. I was so angry when I finally got up and threw my $10.00 plate into the trash can. Why didn't I just go back Harbor Fish and Chips and get the good old fashioned cheese burger on a sesame seed bun with fresh lettuce onions and tomato , delicious golden fries that are perfectly steamed on the inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside, and the incredible all you can eat tarter sauce for $5.95? What a fool. Well, maybe I'll try again in another six years. Hopefully there might be a new restaurant there.

The fish and chips were OK, nothing special. Two stars for that, one more for the beach view.

Good fish, quick service, and a relaxed atmosphere with a nice view. My wife and I were just in Monterey, CA a few weeks ago, and we both like seafood a lot. That said, today we weren't looking for the world's most moist or delicately seasoned fish, just some good, quick, and cheap eats. We settled on the 2 Fish Tacos plate to share. I was worried the whole wheat tortillias might be too tough, but I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was pretty good, not spectacular, but for the price I was satisfied. They do use a bit more cheddar cheese than I was expecting, but unlike a previous reviewer I guess I like cheese so it wasn't a bad thing. They'll automatically bring you salsa with the tacos, but make sure to ask for a side or two of their freshly made tartar sauce. It's creamy and smooth with just the right amount of relish without being too tart. All in all, a decent place to grab a quick bite along the beach.

A-Okay sounds about right, but this place has some good things going for it. Call it 3-4 stars. I go here every so often and usually get the fish 'n' chips (it's what they're "famous for") because I love me some fish 'n' chips. The portions are pretty big and it's good stuff. The french fries are also really good. In the past I've usually gone off-season or on weekdays and it's pretty mellow. Recently I went on a Saturday in midsummer for the first time and the vibe was a bit different (read: crowded with tourists). The Zonies didn't ruin the experience, it just wasn't what I was used to. I'll try to avoid that in the future. With it being such a warm day the fish 'n' chips didn't sound as appetizing as it usually does, so I went for something refreshing and got the shrimp cocktail. It was just a big heaping cup of bay shrimp, which are barely shrimp in my opinion, and a mediocre coctail sauce. They could do this cocktail a lot better. I also got a side of fries and was offered a couple bites of their po' boy sandwich which was quite tasty. The cole slaw was okay, nothing special. There are two seating areas to choose from - both are outside, I believe but the one on the right is not inviting at all. The one they call "the patio" is where you want to be. It's a small palapa-covered area with seating for about 30 people. You're only about 50 feet from the bluff's edge which gets you a nice ocean breeze and whiff of salt air. The do serve a few bottled beers which will run you about 4 bucks per. Soft drinks are about $2.50 and they have an annoying "no refills" policy. Why they would want to cheap out like that I have no idea so that's a bit lame of them. There are other entrees that sound pretty good that I haven't tried and they also have a chalkboard with daily specials. Despite its shortcomings I actually enjoy it here, especially on the right day. Maybe avoid tourist season (they have plenty of biz right now anyway), go in the cooler months and try those fish 'n' chips. Sneak in a Pepsi while you're at it. Afterwards you can poke around downtown Carlsbad (should take you about 5 minutes) or better yet walk off your lunch along the seawall.

It was overcast on the coast this morning, and around 9am I thought, this would be a perfect day for Ivar's clam chowder (Seattle people, you know what I'm talking about). My entire five years in North County, I'd never run into a place that was comparable. A huge wave of homesickness hit me, and then I remembered this place I drove by every so often... it was right on the water, practically, and reminded me a bit of the Ivar's on the pier in Seattle. I decided to give it a shot, and I am so glad I did. Everyone there was extremely friendly and helpful. There were two servers milling around, and when I grabbed a to-go menu one of them took it from me so she could write in some new additions to the appetizer menu (calamari rings, yum!). The guy behind the little window who took my order was super friendly, and pretty easy on the eyes, too (you reading this, fish boy? Look me up). After reading the reviews about how big the fish pieces were, I thought I was prepared for what I was about to receive, but I was surprised! The piece of fish I got was HUGE! It didn't even completely fit on the to-go plate I got. It was perfectly battered, crispy and not mushy. Obviously, I opted for the chowder vs. the fries, and I wasn't disappointed. It was the perfect consistency and exactly what a chowder should be: clams, potatoes and a little bit of celery. Harbor Cafe took the edge off my homesickness, by all means. The only thing they get docked on is a poor parking situation, as other reviewers have described, but other than that, everything is top notch.

The staff was attentive enough, but the food was a HUGE disappointment. The house made clam chowder was decent- nowhere near anything to write home about... then it went hugely downhill from there. My date got the calamari burger....he couldn't get past two bites and later said it literally the worst meal he had ever had. I got the fish taco.... it was supremely dry and flavorless.... the corn tortilla was horrible. This whole place is an absolute waste of a gorgeous view and lovely spot to eat and people watch. Pass it by if you have any standards at all. I wish I could give it a half of a star- or maybe a quarter...This place inspired me to finally sign up on Yelp to warn people of this terrible food.

We went there on Memorial day and the service was horrible. The waitress acted like we were putting her out. My childs quesadilla had a funny taste, like it was cooked on the same flat top as fish. Over-all I will NOT go back and would definately NOT recomend.

This place serves up some killer fish tacos. I would highly recommend bringing out of town guests here for a fairly inexpensive bite to eat with an awesome ocean view.

A very simple small place right on the ocean front. Their 1 piece of fish is huge and fits the whole plate. I like how you can substitute the Chip in Fish & Chip with clam chowder or cole slaw (I like to eat healthy) without additional charge. The fish was really good, light and fresh. Parking is a challenge here though.... but if you can get there before sunset, enjoy good company and a few drinks. The view and location is awesome and it's not pricy at all!

Entertaining some out-of-state friends we stopped by Harbor Fish Cafe after some time on the sand. Food was good, with really large portions and a bit greasy. Cronitas Buckets of beer a great touch for the beach front restaurant. Service was lacking... We had placed our order and watched as several other tables received food before we did. When we asked if the order was lost in the shuffle, the rude server, insisted that it wasn't lost and barked, your not getting a discount. We were just looking for our food not a discount. Unfortunately 1 server tarnished our view and experience.

I loved this place and have been eating at this establishment for almost 20 years. The service and atmosphere is wonderful with a great view of the beach at sunset but parking is always challenging as you share the spaces with the actual beach attendants-but its totally worth it. However, my rating has gone from a 5 star to a 3 because they changed their fish taco recipe! The tortillas chnaged from the whole wheat to the corn and it completely changed the flavor!!!! They also were skimpy on the cheese and I wonder if the sauce was altered as well? (I can't tell if it is the cheap corn tortillas being used that alter the flavor or if it's a combination of sauce and tortilla.) I hate to say it, but this was probably our last visit there. We can get better fish tacos elsewhere now. They used to be the best. The clams were still amazing though.

I still remember the first time I went here when I was around 12 or so. Coming from a British family, fish and chips is held in high regard and usually only consumed in England. Now I know what your thinking, fish and chips? Let me save you some money, because not only are the prices and quality great, but I swear I can't tell the difference between this and an authentic fish and chip plate from England. This is where I get my British fix, and always will. Everyone is very friendly and always smiling. They offer a wonderful 'Beach Brew' of their own (brewed off site by a local place) and it is a great pairing with the fish and chip plate. I can't say enough great things about this place. If your watching the fried food intake, then they have a excellent grilled cajun mahi taco plate with whole wheat tortillas and salad on the side. Not to mention a awesome view of the beach while you eat. A lil something for everyone can be found here, don't pass this place up!

This place definitely never disappoints. After a long day at the beach this is a place to get your fill. A little pricey for some items but I'm always satisfied. The place is small yet has indoor and outdoor seating. If you do want outdoor seating, beware of the sea gulls; they like to steal your food.

Nice spot for eating sea life while watching sea life! Went for an early dinner on an unseasonably cool grey day and were treated to a little dolphin show offshore while dining. That alone gets it a star. I got a combo with 1 piece of fried fish and half the order of a shrimp platter and while the fish was good, the fried shrimp were even better. Next time I would just get a fried shrimp platter. While the fish and shrimp were not overly oily, just right, I was surprised the fries were not oilier. In fact they were a little dry, although the flavor was good. I like my fries a little more, uh, unctuous than that. Ok, I mean I like 'em greasy. I was glad I had ordered the cole slaw substitute and was just picking fries off my friend's plate! The cole slaw is really good. My companion had the red snapper with cajun spices, steam-grilled in a foil packet. It looked really nice, not an overly large portion, and she reported the spice was not overpowering. She got 2 sides and a nice thick slice of grilled sourdough to mop up the sauce - yum! Atmosphere is as relaxed as it gets - there were several folks in towels-over-bathing-suits. Bottom line, I wouldn't go all the way to North County to eat here if i wasn't already in the area, but it's a great choice after a day exploring the local beaches or trails.

This place has the best FISH & CHIPS! SInce today was a perfect day to be out, parking was hard to find so we probably parked 4 blocks away. There wasn't really a wait because we got there right before the rush hour for people having lunch. The only thing that I didn't like was that there are NO REFILLS on drinks...I drink a lot so that means a lot to mean...but the food was still exceptional... go visit Habor Fish Cafe, im definitely going back...

Forget this place. Total tourist trap. It was pricey for what it was and the quality was about as good as fast food. All three of us were very disapointed. Service was by teenagers who have better things to do.

I had to write this one up before I forget. First of all, don't try ordering ahead because they won't make it until you've paid. We thought we were smart and would be able to pick it up and get back to work. Instead, we had to wait for our strips of "fish" and chips. We decided just to eat it there so to not have to tote the stuff back. I ordered the medium F&C (two pieces of fish with fries (what!??! someone got coleslaw?!?) The fries were decent, at least. The fish was overdone and did not seem there was much fish in them, mostly batter and tatar/malt vinegar did not make much of an improvement. I can't really say much about the service because there really wasn't any. Maybe my expectations are too high for this place but when you pay $15 just for F&C it better be good.

While the fish is very good... it is very much an oil bomb. Be warned. My suggestion is to get an order of two fish pieces with chips and split it with someone.

Tied for worst meal I've had in SoCal. Long J. Silver is better. These ratings are surely padded by owners/mgmt. Unless previous raters' taste buds were refined in Russian gulag of WWII. Flavorless, heavy batter, grease. Yeah, scrumptious! Better off trying a $4 burrito down the street.

I went here a week ago with my parents while they were here on vacation. It's an awesome beach-side restaurant and a definite must-go-to for locals and vacationers!! It's an open outdoor restaurant with ocean and non-ocean view seating. It has such a laid back So Cal beach town feel to it with its picnic table-like booths, paper utensils, and paper towels as napkins! The food portions are HUGE!! The meals come with your choice of fries, salad, clam chowder, and I gotta say, if you're any fan of clam chowder at all...you NEED to get it!! It was the most flavorful clam chowder I've ever had!! I had the grilled mahi taco and it definitely filled me up; it was amazing (I repeat it was huge)!! My meal also came with fries, but I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not, because I chose clam chowder... My mom chose the fish n' chips and popcorn shrimp plate and my dad just had the fish n' chips!! I didn't try the popcorn shrimp, but the fish n' chips were delicious and the perfect amount of crispiness!! The prices are a lil' more than just a small shack on the beach (my taco was about $12), but so worth it, because the food won't disappoint! It can get crowded, so I suggest on having a late lunch or early dinner if you want to avoid having to wait! Also, there are no refills on the drinks (bummer, I know), so sip slowly in order to still enjoy your beverage with your meal!! Our server was phenomenal (unfortunately I can't remember her name); she even apologized for the wait since they were super busy in the kitchen (we hadn't even asked, she was just checking on us)...customer service goes a LONG way, and I really appreciated her acknowledging us!! If you are ever in North County and near Carlsbad, this place is a must!! I can't wait to go back!! ;)

Well, I was going to give this place three stars - place reminded me of the clam shacks in New England. BUT when both my wife and daughter came down with a horrible case of food poisioning within hours of eating here (bet it was the shimp cocktail), that dropped to score down big time. Would I go here again? Nope, never...

A friend was visiting California for the first time from Buffalo, NY and after I picked him up from the train station I took him here. I hadn't been there before, but I figure you can't beat having your first meal in San Diego next to the beach on a hot June day. We both had fish tacos and clam strips. Both were generously portioned and prepared well. We were fortunate to get a good spot on the part of the deck facing the water and not PCH. It was nothing fancy, but a fine experience overall.

I'm a former Carlsbad restaurant and I believe you really can't live in that town w/out trying this place. I have many memories of Harbor Fish- every single person who visited me there from outside of SD County had to go to this place and really the ocean-view and the hubub around the place really give it a nice ambiance. It was the first restaurant that we ever took my son to - he was about 2, and he not only loved it then but 10+years later, he still loves going there. While his mother was pregnant w/ him, her only real craving was the clam chowder from Harbor Fish and it really is good (but frankly, Pelly's is still better) and to this day, when any type of food arrives on our plates that's "piping hot" , we always refer to it as "Carlsbad Style" which is how this place describes its chowder. As others have said, the fish & chips, the fish taco, fish po' boy are all fairly standard & not out of the ordinary in any way, good not great. I think the shrimp salad deserves mention as well - it is a great deal - enormous and delicious too. I'd say for the steadily overall increasing prices, the bathrooms and the very pricy daily/nightly specials (is this a fancy restaurant, a fish/chips place, a tourist haven?), I'd take away a couple of stars but for a good touristy sorta night or day in Carlsbad, you could do much worse than chowder from Harbor Fish.

  • Jenny L.

So I came here with a friend visiting me from LA for lunch. Checked out reviews on yelp and decided to try it--it was ok, but probably won't be back. He ordered the fish po boy which was basically the fish and chips fish on a bun. Guess it was alright if you put enough tartar sauce on it I had the combo platter with 1/2 fish and 1/2 shrimp. The fish was ok, but had no flavor at all. I think it was 60% batter and 40% fish. I think the only thing I could really eat were the french fries that came out super crispy and golden. Guess I should have had the clam chowder, but on a hot beach like that who could even order that? It was a nice locale near the beach and good if you were hungry for anything hot and fried after a long day in the sun. Service was very good so no complaints there.

Perhaps my favorite place to eat in the whole world. I've eaten here every year on vacation for the last 10 years. If business brings me within 30 miles of HFC, I'll make the drive just to munch here. I prefer the Calamari Sandwich. I'm not even sure if it is listed on the menu, I've been ordering it for so long. A thick slab of the calmari on toasted bread with a great mayo based sauce, delicious fries. So good and yet so good for you! If you go, take a few bucks to buy one of the best looking Tee Shirts. When you catch a sunset while eating at one of your favorites, tell me... does it get any better?

This sea-side mini-fish house has been a staple in this resort town for almost 30 years. They are known for their fish n' chips and the best I've had this side of the Pacific. An Englishman would be proud. I also love their fried clam strips and they also have great clam chowder and daily fresh fish sandwiches. It is an outdoor cafe that overlooks a great section of Carlsbad beach. There is parking around the back as you cannot park on Hwy 101.

I'll start this off with a warning. Do not attempt to eat here if it's mid-day and you are really hungry. You'll end up driving around in circles looking for parking and then get frustrated and give up. Or maybe that was just me. Parking however, does suck. There's a tiny lot they share with the surf shop next door and the beach behind them. There's street parking, kinda. You have to walk a few blocks usually. Parking aside, their food is yum! I've been coming here since I was a kid and associate this place with summertime and pink lemonade (they have good pink lemonade!) The outdoor seating has great ocean views and the staff is quick and courteous. This place is great for out of town (or state) guests. It gives them a taste of that "Southern California" experience television has taught them about. I usually get the 1 piece fish and chips platter and take home around half of it. ONE piece of fish fills the entire plate and could definitely be shared by two adults with average appetites. I love that they have malt vinegar right there on the tables for you and their chips (fries) are just right. Not too crunchy, not too mushy, and just fat enough to soak up all the vinegar I pour on them.

  • Liz H.

First of all love their fish taco!! I kinda feel like the price is a bit steep and it was weird how they didn't do refills on soda and tea. Anyways, the view is amazing with the sound of the ocean in the background. The restrooms were cleaner then expected. If they could just lower their prices on some of the food on the menu. Even though I moan and complain I will be back because this is my husband's favorite spot and the food is delicious, plus we love Carlsbad!

OK, basket of fish by the sea? sounds great. experience was otherwise. Clam chowder was most likely from a can, and 'doctored'. not the best or close to it. Setting is outside on benches under palapas or inside a tent-like affair. OK for summer but it's colder than a well diggers butt here this winter. We had guests visiting and they wanted to try Harbor Fish. Service was fair. Food was unfair. Was told the fish was Pollock. Wow, won't order Pollock anywhere again if this is what passes for Pollock. Was bland and watery. I think for these prices they ought to serve a better quality of fish, like Cod or Halibut. Our guests ordered other things but no one was really impressed. There are half a dozen places in the Village to get much better fish and chips and at better prices also. This is one of those places that survive by virtue of their location. The landlord should raise the rent.......maybe get a better restaurant in then.

I used to come here with my parents when I was a lil girl and remembered that it was so delicious. Thought I'd try it again (about 8 years later)...and guess what?! It's still delicious! I went with a group of four and we all ordered diff items: clam chowder, fish n chips, calamari, and the burger. The chowder was piping hot and didn't need pepper or hot sauce. The burger was HUGE and tasty. The fish n chips were crisped to perfection. I def recommend this place if you need a quick n tasty fish fix! (Say that twice!)

I went to Harbor Fish last month when a friend of mine was in town from out of state. I thought, great day to see the beach and eat lunch after a long flight. I've had very rude service here before and if business is slow, they'll close the restaurant early (like 7 pm). I still love the clam strips and chowder but the prices have gone way up and the service isn't good. The only thing that keeps me eating here is the food. This is one of those places you wish you could see their food costs so you could figure out if they're gouging you or the costs are really high. My guess goes with gouging because it's a tourist area near vacation rentals and hotels. I will go back but not nearly as often as I used to.

Had lunch there today and was hugely disappointed. Mushy, fried "Alaskan Pollock" for the fish and chips, but wouldn't serve the local halibut which was"on the special" but not prepared as "fish and chips", at any price. Said owner is really "set in his ways". Also offered something they called "KRAB" salad which is really a pressed fish cake sold to tourists who don't know any better. Save your money and go to a real seafood place that understands customer service and real seafood.

  • Kira S.

The location is stellar, the service and food just ok. The clam chowder is good. The fish tacos are very different than Rubio's or Wahoo's--I prefer the other two places but my husband LOVESthe fish tacos at Harbor Fish. So it comes down to personal taste. I will say, that the tacos here are very big, so the one taco plate should be enough for most. This place is super casual so definitely don't dress-up. The service is more about getting you in and out, some crack a smile, other's don't. Go for the views of the water or especially the sunset and you won't be disappointed.

A MUST stop after a long day at the beach!!! Just to watch the sun set into the ocean while eating tasty grilled sourdough bread and clam chowder gives this place a 5 "as good as it gets". The fish tacos are more like fish burritos with giant beer battered filets, baja sauce, cabbage and cheddar cheese wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla.. you can prob. tell this is my all time favorite! If you're in Carlsbad on the beach, hit this place up!

  • Brian N.

A simple fish and chips joint that has much more. The fish is pollock, which is the main drawback. All the seating is outside right at the beach. Bring a coat if you come at night as it gets cold under the canopy or out in the open. The food is solid but nothing exceptional. I'd give it a 3 on taste alone, but it's not just about the taste. Big portions for a good price pushes this to a 3.5. Being on the beach, pushes it more towards a 4, vs. a 3. Clam chowder is very good and their own beer is a pretty good ale. Shrimp is huge and fish tacos are good.

I agree withJenny great to watch seafood while you are eating some of them. Had the red snapper with Cajun spices and yes it was a little small for the money. The reason I had the snapper was , because it was the ONLY item there that was not deep fried! Great to eat outdoors ten feet from the beach. In this day and age , it would have been nice to have more choices than deep fried food. Service was fast and friendly.

While in C-bad visiting family, we decided to cruise to the beach and grab some classic shore food, fish & chips. Growing up in SoCal, I've had my share of the delicious fried fare, and based on the rave reviews from my family, I figured it'd be good. Eh, I was disappointed. Parking is challenging, but I expect that for a beach restaurant. The view is great from the small booths and socializing is encouraged as I had to pardon myself 13 times as I squeezed my ass through the tiny aisles. The view is killer though, beautiful vistas of the Carlsbad beach, and I was glad most of the restaurant is open-air, so I could avoid the greasy smell of fried food. The servers are hardened old beach bunnies, and it seems they've been there for quite a long time based on their less-than-friendly attitudes. But onto the food... Ordering fish and chips gets you four large pieces of white fish battered in a thick batter, none of which is very flavorful. It was flaky and moist, but overwhelmed by the batter, and really bland. Two measly pieces of lemon didn't help. The fries were crispy but also devoid of flavor, but a lot of malt vinegar and ketchup gave me something for my tastebuds to find enjoyable. The tartar sauce was the best part, it was light and flavorful and refreshing, not too much mayo, and a nice balance for the greasy batter. The worst part is there are no refills on drinks. What. The. Hell. Considering most restaurants make the highest profit margin on soda, I'm confused as to why they wouldn't have free refills. Or maybe it's just a throwback to Nazi Germany. Whatevs. If not for the quality family time and gorgeous views, this place would get one star. Save the calories for somewhere else.

I'm a little mixed about this place. Each time I come here, the food's not bad. Some of it's really good actually such as the fried clams. The fish and chips are big, but what can I say other than it's fish and chips. Hush puppies, not big on them. I do like the fish tacos even though it's just the fried fish. The prices are a bit higher than other places, but it's ok. However, this food seems to hit my stomach right away everytime I come here. It must be just too greasy. However, the place is on a pretty good spot, right on the beach too. It's not too far away from some parking that I usually find. Service is decent.

I love this place and now that I don't live in North County anymore.. I find myself dreaming about it. It's right on the beach, has a relaxed environment and food is awesome!

this is my favorite place to get fish n chips in north county. i like the casual-ness of this place, it's completely outdoors, but right on the beach. this is the kind of place you go with the flow... they also have their own specially brewed beer brewed at the pizza port, but only available here. try the clam chowder, it won't disappoint!

I heard so many good things about this place and was excited when I got there. We got there on a Monday around 7/8pm-ish. I guess they close early on some nights because we had 5 minutes to order the food before they shut the kitchen down. But since we were there for the fish N chips, we ordered several orders for the group. I'm always weary of the food prepared towards end of the shift since the kitchen tends to rush it to get out and go hom. So the food comes out pretty quickly and I'm faced with humongous portions of fried goodness. Before I take my first bite, I peel off the batter to see how thick the batter is. To my amazement, after removing part of the batter, I find very little fish. And to my utter disappointment, the food was too greasy and lacking in flavor. It seemed to me that the oil wasn't hot enough or they put too much batter because it was soaking in oil - really good fish N chip should be crispy without being greasy. I ended up only eating 2 pieces of fish because it was just too oily. Price was ok, but the location was nice. I wished the food wasn't so high on the batter - maybe I had an offnight...

Just a perfect storm of atmosphere, taste, variety and price. Less-healthy mood? Knock-out fish and chips and a beer. Heathy mood? The grilled seafood is well prepared with healthy side choices. The fish quality is very good. The atmosphere is fun and it is easy to get a sea view. (Seating is always available. On the worst day you could wait 5 minutes if you want to insist on a great view.) Park in the area, walk along the coast paths (from sidewalk to sand, your choice), walk to shops or wine-tasting, then enjoy a great meal at a great price. Many times this is part of a wonderful evening and we have never been disapointed.

Hungry for sea food, we decided to stop by the Harbor Fish Caf. It's been three years since my last experience. Beach front, very casual place, walking distance from Carlsbad Village, open air with little wooden benches, several tables even have views of the ocean and you can see the beautiful sunset. We ordered the fish & chips, plate of clam strips and fish taco. Clam strips were nice size, fish is fresh, and they give you generous portions of it Fish was fried to crunchy perfection with not a hint of greasiness but very the flavor was bland. Taco is humongous but comes dry with no sauce, again bland. Parking is free but in the busy summer months you will have serious difficulty by default of the location. Highly recommend leaving some time for a walk on the beach or the beach side board walk to burn off your sleep coma.

What a great place! The staff was very friendly and the food is great. I had clam chowder and it was awesome. I also had the fried zucchini which came steaming hot and with ranch on the side. The batter was really good and light, almost - almost - like a tempura batter. My friend got the fish and chips and I looked at the menu and was like ONE piece of fish??? But, it was a giant piece of fish. I would love to come back to this place the next time I'm in the area.

I think I have mixed feelings about this place. I've only been to have lunch here a few times but I've enjoyed it each time. I ordered the Fish & Chips which I thought were pretty good. The fish was obviously really fresh and the batter had a good flavor (I didn't notice the bland-ness of it) with a little malt vinegar on top with the tartar sauce, I thought it was a good meal. The portions are definately enough to satisfy a hungry stomach. The last time I went, I ordered the Combo Plate with deep fried shrimp & fish & chips and I also got the clam chowder as a substitution for something else that I don't remember right now. The clam chowder was great. One thing that bothers me about this place is the "No Refill" policy on drinks, so if you think you may want more, you're better off ordering a large- otherwise you pay full price for a refill. Also, the location is perfect IF you're lucky enough to sit in the limited ocean view seating. If not, you're stuck under a dark shady covering with a view of the restrooms. The prices aren't bad for the location and amount of food that comes with your meal. Service is really fast and accurate as well. I'd recommend this place for a nice seaside lunch if you're not looking for anything fancy.

Every time I come to San Diego to see a friend we come here grab some fish and chips (split one order) and sit on the beach. A perfect little meal to enjoy and watch the sunset. I'm not really a fan of fish and chips (because I'm not a fan of fried food in general) but for some reason I loveeeee these! So now I come here on tradition :) And of course, to sit on the beach.

  • shane c.

This is the best fish and chips i have had anywhere and that includes the UK. The portions are huge, certainly enough to share. Each strip is about a foot long by 2 inches. This is right on the beach and some seats have a great view.

A definite choice for my favorite restaurant ever. Awesome atmosphere right one beach, you can choose to sit outside and watch the sunset, or on their more covered side. Incredible food...but not the greatest service...I wish I could take half a star off for the service. The shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, seasoned spicey fries, and cole slaw are some of the best I've ever consumed and their giant fish tacos are heaven. This Carlsbad classic is the perfect beach restaurant.

Great fish and chips at very resonable prices at this quaint beach shack just off the PCH in Carlsbad. Great service and friendly servers.

  • Natasha N.

Their fish tacos are crazy. Not traditional, but still good. They basically stick a whole fried (like fish n' chips) fillet in a whole wheat tortilla with cheese and cabbage and a mayo sauce. It doesn't matter cuz it's still all good. The clam chowder is good too. It just gets crazy busy because it's in a perfect location. Walk up from the beach grab your food and have some greasy, sandy, yummy lunch.

I love this place... I consider this place a hole in the wall even though its at a very visible corner and beach access point. The fish is fresh and I've loved everything I've ever had there. It isn't your typical fast food joint. Perhaps it would be even wrong to call it a fast food joint. I just have very fond memories of eating here as a kid and now 15 years later I'm still eating here. It is a true fish house but most people come here for the huge battered fish. Its slightly on the oily side but its pure and authentic. You should probably season it to your liking but the tartar sauce complements its just fine. Seating can be tough just cause it can get busy at certain points. The staff is super friendly. I've never had a poor experience with them. The only downside to eating here is on the cold days where its gloomy and windy. The restaurant is almost like a stand with wood posts and a tarp to cover you. Breezes from the beach blow through. I'd recommend bringing a jacket on those cooler days. Clam chowder is fresh and delicious! If couldn't already tell, I like this place. One thing... parking is a challenge... its all street parking behind the restaurant (parking near Carlsbad Blvd is recommended).

What happened to this place?? Used to be our favorite seaside spot for fish ... great portions in a flaky coating .... but we went recently and now the fish is paper thin ... it's nothing but breading! PLEASE go back to your original recipe!

  • Rachel C.

The fish is crispy and delicious. The chowder is great. Love, love love the tartar sauce (and it loves me, too). If you're in the mood for some fried food, or hungover, this is the place. Seating is all outdoors, but they have heaters when the weather is less than warm.

Finally tried this place out after months of passing by it. Ordered the fish and chips, which by the way is a big portion...had to split it with my BF. You can't beat the view, during the summer time, it does get crowded. All in all, I would definitely recommend this place.

I have lived in Carlsbad for 7 yrs, today was my first time to the Harbor Fish Cafe. They have a grilled mahi mahi fish taco that was huge and very good. It was not cheap but the view and beer and fish taco is a staple for a good meal. I will go back.

This is a great casual shack with simple and tasty fish dishes. We were lucky to get a seat on the left when you come in from where you can see the water. Not so sure I would like to sit on the other side with no view, that also seemed very dark. We just had the fish and chips and a couple of beers. As a bonus the sun just set while we were eating.

I wanted to find a place to eat with my wife and 6 year old son while we were on vacation here. I looked to Yelp and found this place. I was kind of on the fence because of some mixed reviews, but figured overall it sounded good. We got a parking spot a block away and walked in. The place is a shack next to a surf shack, so not a fancy place if that is what you are after. They have a kids menu and we sat outside so we could watch the beach and sun as it was about to set. I love fish and chips, so I ordered one piece with fries. My wife got a yellow tail sandwich and my son got a kids fish and chips. We got a couple of the house beers (which comes in bottles). I thought the fish was awesome. I loved the crisp texture of the batter and the tender flesh inside. Great texture. Maybe could have used a bit more flavor in the batter, but I also liked that it wasn't that strongly flavored. Delicious. My son ate his up in no time, then I gave him more of mine because it was so huge. My wife's sandwich was monstrously huge and I helped her eat half of it. The beer was okay, nothing special, but nice to sip and relax. The view was fun and the atmosphere pretty relaxing as we ate. We got done and walked down to the beach to see the sunset. The surf shop next door is fun as well if you are into surfing or cool gear, t-shirts, etc. Overall, very pleased and really nice meal at reasonable cost. I will have fond memories of relaxing and watching the sunset and enjoying a nice meal with the fam (and that tasty fish). Portions are big, so you may want to split. And bring a jacket or sweater if you eat outside as it may be chilly. Other than that, enjoy!

Some friends took us here when we were visiting to go to Legoland. I thought the fried fish was some of the best I've had lately, and the setting is great. Plus, they were really kid friendly, including kids' menus and crayons. What more could a frazzled mom ask for?

  • Charlie R.

If you like fried food, this is the place. Everything is fried. Knowing that, it's pretty good. The location is fantastic, on of the few typical beach side eateries that you would expect (although not in Carlsbad). One plus is that they bew their own beer, which tasted pretty good. It's anice place to just chill out on the patio and throw a couple back and look at the ocean. It might be one of the only restaurants in the area where you can actually see the ocean!

    (3)
  • Dawn V.

I've never had the fish and chips at this place, but I suspect the fish portion of the dish is the same they use for their fish tacos. The fish tacos are big enough for two to share and come with a side of regular or seasoned fries (ergo, chips?). The clam chowder at this place is a little watery but flavorful. Parking is a little difficult for this place, as with most eateries located on the coast, so a bit of a walk might be required. Bring a sweater especially if you come later in the afternoon because it can get windy.

    (4)
  • Debby S.

The Fish & Chips were pretty good (too greasy), but the coleslaw was swimming in a thick mayonnaise dressing, literally drenched in it to the point where there seemed to be more mayonnaise than cabbage. When I asked the waitress about it she was very rude, indicating that a lot of people like it that way, and it can't be served without the dressing on it. I ate almost half of it but was sick afterward. They don't seem to be interested in serving any type of healthy food at this restaurant.

  • Mary E.

The food here is fine, but nothing special. If you like fish 'n chips, don't hesitate. The location, however, is fantastic. That must be why we're all willing to pay the ridiculous amounts we do to eat there. We never go here unless we have family in town because you seriously can't beat the view of a sunset for dinner and it really does have a great feel to it. So, in other words, go for the fun, not for the food.

This place is amazing. Portions are HUGE so be ready to eat. Can't beat the ocean breeze while you are eating some fish and chips. Try the Po Boy as well. Great after a beach day.

  • Melinda D.

Great location in the harbor. Fun decor. Friendly and caring service. Don't mind subbing a salad for fries. That said, the fresh grilled fish is too small of a portion for most. The crab cakes were good but not great. Next time we'll try the fish and chips or fish tacos.

Best fish n chips in North County! Nice and greasy, just the way it's supposed to be. The place is right on the beach too so it's a great place to have a meal and enjoy some beachside relaxation.

not happy....ive eaten at here before and in the past it was decent, but , now it totally sucked. i had a c'bad fish po' boy and the only thing that i could taste was the whole wheat bun. i comes with onion, lettuce and tomato oh ya and fish???? i couldn't find any of that. it had NO TASTE whatsoever. lots of coating but no fish, and for $9.75 it is way over priced. the french fries are 5/16 frozen and taste just like that (SAW THE EMPTY BOXES OUT FRONT WHEN YOU WALK IN).....the rest of the group was not happy either. if your going to take a date there you will spend a lot of money ($50.00). beers are $4.75 for corona and pacifico and there own brew that sucked too. the server didn't even know where it was made (indian reservation in inyo/kern county) you would think that they would have a local brewery make it for them. SPEND YOU HARD EARNED MONEY SOME WHERE ELSE!!!!!! OVER PRICED AND OVER RATED oh yeah its getting realy grungy too they could use to power wash this whole place. try to find a place to park about 3 blocks away (if your lucky)

  • Paul S.

Overrated-overpriced (for what you get)! Been goin' here for about 8 years-good fish tacos, fish and chips but no better than a standard fish & chips place. Their prices have exploded! I now leave it to the Zonies (out of town Arizonians) who want to drop a wad at a trendy hole-in-the-wall while they ave in my town.

    (3)
  • Michelle C.

Great fish n chips, but very pricey! Service was OK. Dining is all outdoor seating do dress in layers! Gave it four stars, but won't eat here again...too $$$.

This place was decent, but pretty pricey for what it is. $15 for the fish and chips, no refills on soda.. meh.

  • Brody H.

I agree that it's not supposed to be ment for a 5 star restaurant. The scenery is great, however, in order to see it you have to go to the back of the building cause seating on the side to see the ocean is sparse. Fish N Chips, and the Carlsbad burger both the fish in it was very dry. The tarter sauce was good and the staff was nice and friendly for the first impression then they get caught up in their own conversations. All in all I would say the best part of this restaurant is its location and for that you can go get anywhere at multiple spots along the coast it's nothing remarkable and me and my wife won't go back.

Very nice little place off the beach. Having a shrimp cocktail and their Harbor Fish Cafe Beach Brew... Shrimp is fresh and come with coleslaw. On the bland side for the slaw and cocktail sauce but good. Will be back when in Carlsbad again. Service is great and friendly!

  • Erin P.

Hands down one of my favorite spots to eat. You really can't beat the location. It's perfect after a day at the beach. They are known for their fish and chips. It's beer battered, so it doesn't compete with my favorite fish and chips spot in Orange County. They also have fried clams and shrimp. They offer other fish and seafood items on the menu, as well as a burger and salad choice too. I debated the fish taco, and after seeing someone order it I will definitely be choosing that next time. Bonus, you can get the fish grilled or fried in both the taco and the po'boy. No refills with drinks, so get the large if you're thirsty like me. It's plenty big.

We have eaten here before but it's been a few years. There were four adults and we all had the fish and fries. I also had the clam chowder. Every one enjoyed their meal but the chowder was the big winner with us in the rave review category as everyone had to have a taste of mine after I couldn't stop talking about it. We came in a little after the lunch rush on a weekday so we're lucky to get a nice booth with a view of the sea. Wait staff was efficient and attentive from start to finish. I would recommend this place to anyone that it is worth a visit.

  • Skyler B.

Awesome little fish shack as close to the beach as you can get. Very busy and lively place. Not many places to sit, so there is a little wait but not too bad. I had the Fish&Chips and they were great and with a good portion size. A little on the pricey side but to be expected on the beach. The service was very inviting and all the wait staff helps each other out. I would recommend this place.

for all of you fish 'n chips lovers...this is the place you wanna be! right next to the beautiful shoreline; excellent service and food quality. everyone at our table was pleased with the food; our wait staff was "on it"! even me, who doesn't happen to enjoy seafood...got a burger that really rocked! generous portion; good quality and literally the only complaint = just not enough room in the tum-tum to finish the meal. again, if you are after legit fish 'n chips...you gotta come to harbor fish cafe.

  • Courtney F.

Would have given it 5 stars for the food alone! But unfortunately there are a few waiters/waitresses that were just the worst. We had 3 kids under the age of 3 and were being yelled at while we were trying to figure out how to sit 8 adults and 3 kids in a 6 person table. We told her that we understood not to block the high traffic walkway she then proceeded to say, "Oh, didn't know you needed 3 high chairs." Our waiter took our drink order and never returned. There were a few friendly staff. Kevin was awesome! He was on top of refilling our water and was quick when asked for anything! Aside from the unkind staff, the food was great! Loved the chowder, had a bit of spice to it! And the shrimp was amazing! The manager was very apologetic for his staff and really understanding.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and had a great time. Harbor Fish Cafe is located alone Carlsbad Blvd and right on the water. The portions here are very generous and the view is unbeatable. I ordered the Carlsbad Fish Taco and my mom ordered the Harbor Fish Taco. The only difference between the two was that mine was spicy. It had a nice kick and was pretty good. It wasn't the best quality out there but it was definitely acceptable, especially since we had an awesome view. The attire is really casual, so it is a place to eat while you're spending the day by the beach.

After sitting out on the beach and playing in the waves for a few hours, we stopped over at Harbor Fish. Brilliant idea. This restaurant has that cozy, beach side feel. It's uber casual and family friendly. Great service too. Once we were finished, our server came by and said: "Can I grab those plates before the wind does?" The patio is right along the highway, which is too bad, but the street traffic does not detract too much from the lovely ocean view. You can get shrimp, clam strips, a burger, fish tacos, crab and fried fish -- likely cod. They do have weekday specials and a menu for children that contains corn dogs, a cheese quesadilla, fish, shrimp and mac & cheese. They also have grilled sourdough and cole slaw. And the prices are fairly reasonable, especially given the location. I was surprised. Food is pretty decent, to go along with the amazing views. I went with the clam chowder and the po boy, which came with a side of fries. The clam chowder was a tad bit too thin and did not have enough vegetables or clams. But the flavor was OK. Po boy was pretty good. The batter on the fish was a little bit too thick, but the flavor was nice. Also, the food was slightly over salted, but not too overwhelming. Fries were mighty tasty! They also post the sunset time so you can be sure to snag a seat and watch from the patio. Pretty sweet. If I were visiting the area again -- which I intend to -- and needed a quick lunch before leaping back into the ocean, I would give Harbor Fish another go.

Fish and chips with a view! Located along Carlsbad Blvd, Harbor Fish Cafe is a great place to watch the sun go down and have a cold drink with some seafood. Harbor Fish Cage offers a wide range of beers,'including the house beer which is something worth trying out if your unsure what your looking for on the drink menu. Sampling the fish n chips and a few beers, I can highly recommend and afternoon time. Car parking can be a little hard to get either along Carlsbad Blvd or Ocean St. The attire is really casual, so don't worry about shorts and flip flops. Although the place has an amazing location and the cold beers the food is on the average side. Not crazy but acceptable. Overall Drink: 3-5 Food: 3-5 Service: 3-5 Coming back: Yes

I give it five stars because of their fish tacos and the view. You couldn't get closer to the ocean and not be on the sand. This place has special nostalgia for our family as we were introduced to it many moons ago from some family friends who unfortunately moved cross country (and we miss them dearly). This place (along with being a must-stop) reminds us of them. Not a lot of space, particularly if you want that view, so get there early, and I can't vouch for the rest of the menu. A little uninspired aside from their signature dish. The spicy fries are really just a dry rub/salt that they liberally dump all over the fries, so if you like salt that's where it's at. Fine for families.

  • Elise H.

Grabbed lunch with family visiting from out of town. And that is the only time I ever come here - when my family wants to come because it is nostalgic for them. Everything about Harbor Fish is just alright. The location is amazing, but there are very few tables where you can see the ocean views, which is a bummer, and the set up makes it impossible to feel any kind of ocean breeze. The servers are super nice and attentive, until you get your food and then they kind of forget about you and you have to ask for things a handful of times before you get what you need. The food is okay, but nothing great; tastes decent enough, but nothing memorable. This trip I had the Carlsbad fish taco and it is a huge portion, which is nice, but different than fish tacos anywhere else, with one large steak, instead of smaller pieces of fish; makes it hard to eat. We also had fish & chips, which is their specialty, and again, just okay, and a burger, which my husband didn't love, except for the bun, since it was on ciabatta, which he liked. No free refills on fountain soda, either.

3 stars for the location alone. The location of harbor fish is absolutely amazing! It is literally 15 feet from a perfect viewing of the water. The only downside to this place is the fact that they know their location sells itself... Unfortunately, it shows in their food. It is by no means terrible but it is not something that you'd write home about or crave for lack of a better word. Ordered the fish and chips, having had this place several times before. Fish comes out, it's pretty good, chips are also pretty good, pour a ton of vinegar and ketchup on these guys and their both amazing! Overall I liked the dish after the ketchup and vinegar but it shouldn't have to resort to that. Regardless, the location is great, so it keeps me coming back... Pros- Location, location, location Location Location Ketchup Vinegar Cons- Food is just meh Tables can be scarce Tourists Parking

We liked it. Prompt service. Sat at counters closest to kitchen, so got a view of the ocean, which is what we were looking for :) and food delivery was quick & tasty. Super casual. Had a nice lunch experience with my daughter. Would come back.

Get the COMBO!! Great deep Fried shrimp with fish and chips. Only wish their cocktail sauce had a bit more horseradish. Quick service - and the house beer isn't bad. Overall a great meal.

Wanted to eat right off the beach, so we tried this place. I was not very impressed and disappointed all around. There was no real view from the cafe and the service was not very pleasant. We had five different people servicing our table and they were kind of walking all over one another. The biggest problem is the food is bland. There is no flavor at all. Thank goodness for the condiments! Everything is pretty much fried (I requested different but got told I couldn't change the menu) except for the special. Another huge issue is no refills on sodas. Really? I had water instead but they serve it in a small kid size cup. I asked for a larger cup but that seemed inconvenient for them. They did accommodate but the server did hesitate on my request. The prices is the last complaint in this review. I think things were a bit overpriced. If the food and service was good, then maybe this wouldn't be a factor but it is a huge factor. Beer is $5 a bottle! Glad I stuck with the water. For me, my wife and two 7 year olds, it cost $61 with tip. That was two kids meals, two fish & shrimp platters, one appetizer and one beer for my wife. Kids meal came with drinks and I had water. My wife had left overs and asked for a Togo box but all they had was foil. They also used plastic utensils. Seems like they are cheap and don't want to spend money on their customers. I would not recommend this place and I will not be back. I truly believe they do well because of the location. If it wasn't for the convenience, people would probably not eat there.

The BEST and biggest fish tacos in San Diego. Great fish po' boy as well! Great for a light afternoon lunch or sunset dinner after a beach day. Parking can get tricky, so we park a little ways and make our date night here into a beach walk. Great friendly service, and low key, causal beach spot with GREAT food.

This is a great place, I always come here when I'm in Carlsbad. It had almost became a tradition to come here. The food is good and the view is always great! However the service could be a little better. This time I came with my mom, even though they had a lot of table avaliable they sat us at a lege I don't mind it because of the view. But my mom doesn't care for it because it has high chairs. Finally after waiting for the waigh staff to come and great us they ask what we would I've to drink, we order our future order and then they bring drinks. My mom ordered a cola and I got an oj they bring the cola with out a lid and don't bother to bring a straw when I asked for one she gave me one but didn't have one for my mom. I gave my mom the straw the server gave me but because it was with out a lid and the fact that my mom was sitting at a different angle her drink slippilled. I asked if they had lids, (my bevridge came with one) but for some reason they didn't think to give one to my mom... Due to the spill and the fact they don't care I give them 2*

I was reading some of the other reviews....ok people be real, don't be an overachiever on expectations!!! this is not a 5 star restaurant, its on the beach on 92009 zip code AND a tourist area.... The location is made to look like a hut-beach style, care free, you wont find white table cloths, it is a fast food type restaurant catering to people enjoying the day, walking, surfing, taking in the beauty right in front of them, so pretentious snobs: do not patronize this establishment They have a really nice beer, bottled in Julian, the fish might be frozen but it tastes fresh, the grilled fish taco is worth every penny... I would hold the seasoning on the fries or asked if customer wants them seasoned.....

Love! One of my childhood favorites! Since I was a little girl my family has been coming to the Harbor Fish Cafe after some well spent time on the beach. We come every time we stay in Carlsbad and are never disappointed! There is no place else I can get fried clams so delicious, a perfect grilled fish taco with delectable cole slaw, or New England clam chowder.

The fish and chips aren't too bad but the bottle of beers we ordered were not even very cold . We were told that's how they serve them. Luke warm? The servers are all pretty young and have that I don't give a crap attitude . Not fun. KEVIN was awesome though. He was young but he really cared. He wasn't even our waiter but once our waiter took our order we never saw him again. The 3 stars are because of Kevin. This place is a total tourist place. If you want good fish and chips go to the Ventura Harbor. They use halibut not cod. This place not so good. Go elsewhere for sure .

Ok, here's the straight scoop. They over charge and under deliver. No refills on the over priced sodas, slow service and restrooms that are so filthy even the maggots are gagging. No joke, there are a ton of restraints around the area who really want your business and don't think that everyone is a stupid tourist from somewhere else. Too arrogant to care. Take it from a local.

  • John E.

Eh... Not that bad, but nothing amazing... The shrimp I had were most definitely frozen a few hours earlier; yet, the fish I had was pretty good. The tartar sauce and cocktail sauce are mediocre at best. This place is way over priced for the quality. Do yourself a favor and head down to Point Loma Seafood and get your money's worth.

Good place to stop for a fish taco and savory fries. The piece of fish was satisfyingly huge. They dust the fries with a nice seasoning. There is no parking, which was unexpected, but we found a street spot only two blocks away. I took one star away for dingy restrooms and not-so-quick waitstaff. Come for the delicious food, stay because you're still waiting for the check.

This place was right across the street from our hotel and, after a walk on the beach Liz, the kids, and I stopped in for a casual beachside dinner! Casual is the key here, it's just a fish shack but it reminds me of fish shacks in Cape Cod! This place could just as easily sit on Oak Bluffs Harbor. Decent chowder, good value kids meals, and great fish entrees. Liz had the Salmon, the kids has fish & chips and shrimp & chips, and I had the Fish Po' Boy Sandwich Over all, two thumbs up!.

Very disappointed with our fish tacos. Have eaten here a few times before and it was pretty good, but this time the fish was very dry. I opted for a salad as a side and it was boring. I also noticed that my husband's taco was dripping "white stuff" all over the place and mine wasn't. When I told the waitress, she commented that maybe I didn't have their white sauce on mine. Well, that was part of why it was so dry. They brought me some, but by then I had eaten 1/2 of my taco. It certainly was better with the sauce on it! Hubby thought their beer was good.

Ok! Nice little spot by the beach. Expected great fish but it was a bit flavorless. Not true to the hype I'd heard about it. Just ok not terrific. Price was too high for the quality.

A friend recommended the place to me so I thought we would try it while staying in Carlsbad. She thought the prices were a bit high, I think they were average for seafood. My husband and I shared a large clam chowder and a two piece fish and chips plate. We are both light eaters and this was more than enough food for the two of us. The clam chowder was delicious. My daughter, who is not normally a fan of clam chowder, loved it. The two piece fish and chips surprised me. The two pieces of fish were super long and the batter was light and crunchy. We both loved the fish. It may be one of the best fish and chips I've ever had. Tons of French fries come with the fish. They give you one slice of lemon, one side of tarter sauce, and one side of ketchup, which is pretty light for my taste. I would have enjoyed more sauce, I love lots of tarter sauce with my fish. Kids menu and crayons keep younger kids busy while you wait for your food to be cooked. Kids meal prices are higher than most places. The kids fish and chips had a lot of French fries and the fish was a good size piece. They only got one side of ketchup and one side of tarter sauce, no slice of lemon. Neither of my kids finished their whole plate (might be due to eating some of our clam chowder). Wish we would have bought one fish and chips and one clam chowder for them to share. The service was fast and friendly. One side of the restaurant has a view and the other does not. I recommend not coming right before sunset like we did. We sat on the non-view side and missed the sunset all together. We should have just waited a few minutes for the sunset, taken some pictures, and then taken a seat. The view side became empty pretty quickly after sunset. By the time we finished and payed, the view side was almost completely empty!

I agree the food was very overpriced.. I hate the fact that you don't get refills while eating in the restaurant.. Really lame! The food was BLAND and you can't change anything. Very strict rules my son just wanted the taco but he HAD have the fries on his plate. For one kids meal , two harbor taco plates , and one jumbo shrimp plate, three drinks $80 bucks! We ate lunch at the Seaport village with alcoholic drinks for $112 the day before..

We always look forward to our outings to Harbor Fish Cafe. Great Fish & Chips, love the homemade Clam Chowder but my favorite is the Deep Fried Clams. Hugh portions, good prices and the walk along the beach after lunch is spectacular. Looking forward to having dinner here in a few weeks with out of town guests, the sunsets are the best.

My finace and I came here for dinner on a Sunday evening just after 5pm. We were seated immediately at the bar, although it looked like there was already a wait for larger parties. The servers were pretty attentive and our food came out pretty quickly, although I never got a refill on my water. Their clam chowder was very good, and the deep fried clams were very tasty. I had one of the daily specials, swordfish with butter and garlic, which came with coleslaw and a piece of sourdough toast. The swordfish was cooked well and tasted good, but both it and the toast were absolutely drenched in butter. I love butter, but the meal was so rich it gave me a stomachache. Also, the coleslaw is bland in my opinion, but I'm not crazy about coleslaw. Overall we'll probably eat here again, but I'll try to order a lighter option.

This is a very basic, almost fast food-comparable restaurant. Maybe it's just me, but when I'm near a beautiful ocean, good food just adds to the relaxing experience. Unfortunately, on the strip that we're staying on there hasn't been anything memorable. This place included. It was so unappealing and looked like it'd make me sick so I opted out of eating to avoid a potential stomach ache. But the boyfriend got the fish and chips and insisted I at least take a bite. So I did... Take ONE bite. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't memorable. It lacked in flavor. If you're just looking for a quick bite after hanging out at the beach all day, and flavor isn't a priority then this will do the trick.

I really don't understand the bad reviews this place gets. As someone who lives in New England, I think they get it pretty darn close to being right except for maybe the chowder. We ordered fish tacos, which were filled with a huge piece of fish and tons of flavor, a very refreshing shrimp salad and fish and chips, which was on special for less than $10. They give you two huge pieces of fresh fish with a very nice, light coating. Not to mention, great service and a fantastic seaside location. Would definitely return again!

We have been going here for years. Every time we are in the area! Always order the same thing, fish & chips. I've actually called and ordered take out as were staying nearby and wanted to eat in our timeshare. Love, Love, Love the location. Like that it is ultra casual and so in keeping with the beach. As long as they are there, we will continue to go back. It is worth waiting a bit to sit on the side with the ocean view. Be sure not to miss this opportunity when in the Carlsbad area.

Really a bummer because the location rocks. The food is bland. Lindas specail coleslaw bland the breading bland the tarter sauce bland. The beer selection sucks. Over priced for under priced food, not to mention the service blows!

Excellent fish tacos. Had the Harbor Taco and the Spicy Carlsbad taco. Large tacos reasonably priced. The Cajun fries hit the spot. Nice, prompt and friendly service. I will return.

Great food a bit over priced. $48 for fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder....ouch! (with 2 non-alcoholic drinks) I guess being in a touristy area has its price. The food was good, service was great and the views were very good right out to Carlsbad Beach. It was just hard to digest the $14 2pc fish and chips and the fish and chowder my wife got. She said the chowder was good but not great. Good place to eat, very convenient, but if you want to save a few buck, get away from the beach!

Great view, neat location next to the park on the beach. Prices are fine for such an expensive piece of property. Lots of fish and chips varieties, I had the harbor combo and it was very good. Staff was nice, it was busy because of mothers day, so not perfectly attentive. Parking can be very tough during peak beach hours.

There are lots of Fish Tacos along the coast. Here you'll get a large portion of fish with fresh cabbage, onions, sauce to add flavor without overpowering. I had the spicey version and it was just right. The fries were thin and crispy, just like I like them. The taco itself was a bit heavy and took away from the fish, so I opted to use a fork and avoid the taco. The lady who took my order was wonderful - friendly and kept checking to make sure I had what I needed. That's not the case with the rest of the guys who took orders without offering options and delivered the dishes with a "whatever" attitude. Customer service matters - a lot! Keep up the great fish prep!

This place was exactly what I was looking for. Nice little place off the water with some good fish and chips. There was a small line to get in. I saw a take out window where food could be ordered with a sign that said "food must be taken off premises". Right outside the wall that separated the patio from the street there were a few benches. It looked like an area with no table service so I was wondering if it were for the take out people possibly. I went to the window to ask if that was for the take out people to sit. The guy behind the counter with his "Doc Holliday" hipster mustache pointed to the sign like I couldn't read and said "off premises". I said I was clarifying if that was considered "off premises" because it was beyond wall. He said "that isn't off premises". The rudeness and disrespect was uncalled especially in front of my son. We got sat by someone and were able to order and sit and eat. Needless to say this was not the way I wanted to start my meal. The clams were a nice portion for a starter and we ordered the 2 piece fish plate. The fish was larger than the plate so the value was good and quality was fresh. The other thing was we were served by so many people. I didn't know who to call over for help. The last person was an older lady and she was very pleasant and saved the experience.

If you're in the area, you have to try this place! It's THE BEST place for fish tacos! Anytime of day, any time of year. Best is right before sunset so you can sit & try to catch the "green flash" at sunset while finishing your beer. Service is great too! I've been here countless times in the 8 years I've lived in Carlsbad. Not sure why I'm just remembering to write a review now.

My dad brought me here today. He raves about the view and the fish tacos. I must confirm that the fish tacos are really more the size of burritos. I, myself, chose to have a fish po boy. Sorry, but it was mediocre at best. Think I got more fried breading than actual fish. You can choose to get things grilled or fried, for those conscious of what they eat. Can switch out your fries for salad, soup, cole slaw, etc. The wait staff wee friendly and attentive. There are better places to go, though, I'm sure.

They are known for the fish and chips for a reason. They were amazing I would recommend it to anyone. The ocean views are breath taking. I also tried the mahi and that was delicious. I will definitely come back to this place again the next time I come visit.

Thanks to Love C and Amy B I found Harbor Fish Cafe! I was in the area and remembered a great spot they always go to. I ordered their fish taco and it was huge. The fish taco came with your choice of side so I got the clam chowder. I liked the clam chowder too. I will be back! Oh yeah, I also tried their thresher shark here. It was the special of the day. It was good, healthy. Reminds me of swordfish.

Best tarter sauce ever! It's homemade, and oh so tasty with the greasy, fried up fish and chips! The grilled salmon is ok, wish the sauce was more savory...unpretentious with paper towel rolls serving as napkins, and picnic tables for seating. Great view of the ocean, dog friendly, and just chill!

One extra star for the copious amounts of sauce we got for our to-go order (ketchup, tartar, salad dressing). That's important! Great location, solid food, big portions, friendly service. The fried fish was the crispiest fried fish ever, and the po' boy sandwich was very large and filling. Good clam chowder too! The dinner salad could have had been a little more colorful, but it was fresh. Their dog friendly section is tiny and slightly awkward (some of the tables face each other, so you'll be facing strangers). We got our food to go and walked 30 seconds over to one of the many benches facing the ocean and ate there. Overall, a cute little fish restaurant that won't overwhelm you with a fancy 15-page menu!

I have eaten here on-and-off for 20 years. Over the last few years the quality has sunken dramatically. My wife and I had fish tacos tonight. What used to be some of the best fish tacos around are now almost inedible. The tortilla was dry and tough. The fried fish was OK, but the grilled fish was as dry as shoe leather. It used to be that the tacos were stuffed with a generous amount of cabbage, cilantro, and cheese. Now you literally have to go digging to find any of that. The wait staff was as nice as ever, but in raising my concerns about the poor quality I was told that they are aware of the problem and blame it entirely on the owner who doesn't care and won't care as long as he gets good tourist business. If you're a local like me, eat somewhere else. If you're visiting, enjoy the view and have some fried zucchini -- that still looks good. P.S. A couple next to us left without ordering because calamari is no longer on the menu. Go figure.

This is a great place for grilled fish tacos and fish and chips at a reasonable price. Best for after hanging out on the beach. Good views. Limited to beer and wine. (Wine selection is terrible)

We came to the Fish House in search fish and chips. It was definitely a huge serving which we were happy about for the amount we paid. It's was 12.99 for a two piece fish and chips plate. The food was average. By average I would compare it to an Alberto's mexican restaurant. It's what you would expect to get. If you are looking for a good flavorful piece of fish with chips I would recommend Hello Betty off of Mission avenue in oceanside. We went there just last week and had a flavorful plate of fish and chips.

This review is strictly for the food, although this place does a have some pretty sweet real estate! The place isn't fancy by no means but a very chill spot and they always seem to be busy especially if the is nice. As for the food, I ordered the fish and chips and for two pieces of fish and fries it was like $11-$12 I think which to is a lil on the high side. The fish was not great but it was good. The French fries were a lil soggy but still edible, so you can imagine after I drenched me with vinegar how soggy they got. I also tried the clam chowder which was pretty good. No real complaints about the food. The service to me wasn't bad either. Overall not a bad spot to get a quick bite to eat after a day at the beach. Just don't expect 5 star rated food.

We had the clam chowder - very tasty - plenty of clams with a mild spicy heat to it - perfect on a cool CA night! We did take out this time around, but have dined on site - nice beach atmosphere, very casual. If you are in the mood for Fish and Chips - a good choice.

Been here a couple times. It was a great day to go (Thursday) not as busy but still some tourists. It has a good view of the beach on part of the restaurant. Seating is limited. No drink refills med. Drink was $2.50 for a 22 oz that's half ice. They are pretty shy-stea with the ketchup and tar tar sauce. I had the harbor combo. It was ok. Fries were really good. But the shrimp seems like he just got them from Costco and deep fried them. The fish has the right amount of batter. Not to much but no flavor in the fish. Like it was frozen to long. Small cup of clam chowder was $4.95. Really?! O_O Manager turned away a customer who's daughter had a sandwich from somewhere but the mom wanted to order from him... I guess. Your better off bringing your own food and eating it on the grass area or actual beach. You're basically paying for the view...

Rude in rigid! This place has pretty good fish but they have rules that are ridiculous. Their service is very slow. If you really want to good fish and chips come here, but if you want to be treated nicely don't.

My husband and I went on Saturday, we were excited to sit outside and have a view of the ocean. I ordered a shrimp and Krab cocktail. It was $8.95. It was the Krab you get from the grocery for $2.99 a pound. The shrimp was just grocery store bought and they couldn't even take out the poop vain. I ate one shrimp before I realized. Yuck. I let them take my plate. They didn't ask if there was a problem with it and I didn't say anything but that was almost $10. Disgusting. They recommended their clam chowder, it was so watery. Had a fish taco, that was good and crispy. Way too expensive for the cheap store bought food. Nothing fresh.

Awesome clam chowder and amazing location. It's a fun spot and good stop for a quick bite. It's a little to expensive for what it is though.

  • Alan R.

Dont get the clam chowder! its watered down and you can get a better clam chowder from Cambells soup can!! Fish and chips meal (which is what they are supposedly famous for) was also very poor in quality. Only thing worth the high price was the ocean view!! Its a tourist trap restaurant that has the cheapest of everything in order to maximize their return on investment.

Stopped in with a very hungry party of 12! My family was out visiting and after a day at the beach was craving fish n' chip fare! This place is a great little fish house with huge portions! There is no indoor seating. There is an awning with seats underneath it as well as an uncovered section of benches. Parking can be a nightmare in the little lot, most people are walking over from the beach or local vacation rentals. Everything is cooked fresh so there is a bit of a wait, but for basic fish fare that will fill your tummy, you can't go wrong here! The server was kind and knowledgeable!
