Everyone is so personable here! I love the people and I love the food!! And kudos to my server Sirena. She was so patient and attentive to my semi-complicated order. I highly recommend this spot! My favorite are the cold pies, more specifically the coconut cream! Yum!

Tasteless food from Sysco the school lunch provider. They had 2 customers and the owner had his back turned to the restaurant while panicking over the two orders placed in the kitchen. They don't know what they are doing and the food is ultra bland. nbcbayarea.com/investiga…

Quick review - the food is great. The pancakes are incredible. The sandwiches I have had are great - the service is very nice but most of the time they just seem in a bit over their heads. I say this to help them because the food is great and employees are nice. But - Twice we have had to ask for our drinks after we had already received our food. The morning I ordered pancakes they were out of maple syrup!? And if you want a side of butter it comes melted in a ramekin which just seems odd for one's toast. I think they can pull it together. I hope they do.

My boyfriend works nearby, so I joined him and a friend for lunch here today. The staff is super nice, and, honestly, you guys had me at mini-buckets of crayons and butcher paper :P I ordered the tomato red quinoa, spicy tater tots, and a mini key lime pie. I ended up not liking the quinoa, mainly because it had lots of onion (which I can't eat) - that's on me. Next time, I'll go with my gut and get the steak lager pie, which his friend ordered - it looked so good! And I was a bit sad. But not for long, because I had tater tots and pie! (I'm five years old on the inside, it seems...) I mean, yum! The tots came with two delicious sauces. I also tried my guy's Thanksgiving turkey sandwich, and it was quite tasty :) Oh, and that mini key lime pie - adorable AND delicious! It was a lovely little place for a nice lunch, and I will be back soon! (Hopefully not next to a table blasting dubstep Taylor Swift - that was just strange. Hehe!)

As the name suggests, this cute restaurant only have the simple things. And I say "simple things" in a good way. You can draw on your table with crayons or play hang man as you're waiting for your food. Drinks came out in a mason jars and the menu consists of: sandwiches, soup, salads, and pies. I tried the half roasted chicken salad & the half mushroom soup. Both were tasty and the service was great. Also, the pies looked amazing! I'm going to try those next time I'm here.

Another update since I finally got in there for breakfast! I had the Breakfast Veggie Sandwich - and it was all kinds of yummy. At $8.50, it was pricey but worth it with scrambled egg whites, a potato pancake and some other magically combined ingredients. I also had a $3 Stumptown which was delicious and hot (which is a coffee must!). Also, once again the cashier (different person) was both nice and helpful. I will be back for this sandwich and coffee when I feel like a fancy $12 breakfast - FO SHO!

I was so disappointed to get my lunch here today. I ordered the Greek salad and received a bunch of brown lettuce leaves in a container! NEVER ordering this here again. For the price they charge for a simple salad, they should at least have fresh greens in it. Shame on you.

I love love love love love everything about simple things!!! The pies are absolutely incredible! I'm a huge fan of the mud pie and key lime, but I always get the chef's special that changes monthly!! They also carry Stumptown coffee (thank you thank you) and the food is simply delicious. Nothing is better than a pulled chicken sand in the pretzel bread. I also love that you can substitute, add or take out anything you want! And the staff is just wonderful :) thank u guys! See you soon!

Overall, I can understand why people like this place. Ingredients looked good and service was decent. Seems to be street parking only and the place is fairly small, so be prepared for that. That said, Simplethings just wasn't for me. Maybe I didn't order the right thing. I don't really think so, though. As a vegetarian, I knew from looking at the menu that it could be challenging. Yes, they have vegetarian options, but many contain too much cheese or aren't hearty enough or don't provide enough veggies. I give them credit for trying, but they miss the mark for those of us looking for fresh and light yet satisfying vegetarian options. I settled on the market veggie salad. I take full responsibility for not asking about the seasonal grilled veggies, which I find is generally code for squash and/or eggplant. My salad was a very large bowl of lettuce with with a few grilled portabella mushrooms, tomatoes, a little feta, and a couple of kalamata olives. The bulk of the non-lettuce portion consisted of huge chunks of way too much eggplant and zucchini. I only took a couple of bites of the zucchini/eggplant part and ate about a quarter of the rest of the salad. By the time I had enough, it barely looked touched with a huge pile of zucchini and eggplant taking up almost half of the plate. My friend had ordered the pasta from the kids menu for her daughter, who graciously shared it with me. Part of the way through my little portion, however, I realized it contained accidental bacon. I initially thought it was browned cheese or breadcrumbs, but it was definitely bacon. Not just a piece or two. It could have been a parmesan and bacon crumble for all I knew, which I don't think it was supposed to be. It looked as though enough care wasn't taken separating ingredients and some bacon got into the parmesan. We did order cutie pies. Lots of custard and marshmallow topped options, which are too heavy or non-vegetarian for me. I settled on the salted caramel. It was good enough although nothing for which I would go out of my way. I did like that they had tiny pie options for those of us who enjoy something sweet after a meal. With so many places out there with a number of interesting vegetarian options, I don't think I'll come back. Since it's walking distance from my house, however, I might keep an eye on the menu to see how it evolves over time.

Great location. Simple tasty foods. Amazing desserts. Grab the salted caramel pie, and any of their sandwiches and you will be happier then ever. Staff is very nice.

I can't say much about the decor or ambience because we always got take-out for work. But regarding the take out, there hasn't ONCE been a time where they got the order correct on the first try. With that said, the team at work would suffer the missing/wrong orders every time just for the pie. It's absolutely delicious, and packaged in such a cute way. Salted Caramel & Key Lime are pretty good, but my favorite is definitely the peach pie.

Super cute restaurant that we randomly stumbled upon a late Saturday night. Only weird thing was...we were the only people in the restaurant but I guess 9 pm on a Saturday night in LA people are not going to really be out and about in Toluca Lake. Loads of people came in for take out orders though. Cute idea to have crayons because you're able to draw on the table and and play games like hang man while you wait for your food. Food was good - loved that they had so many options for mixing and matching salads and half sandwiches. The kale salad is delicious! BEST PART that I think everyone agrees on...the mini pies! And they rotate through different ones on certain days of the week (a la Sprinkles-esque). Had to indulge and try and chocolate peanut butter, so good and perfect size! Definitely want to come and check this place out for brunch.

It's pretty nice to have a go to spot near WB. This probably qualifies as such a spot in my book. REason for one star dock. Parking, pure and simple. Most of the time, this wouldn't be an issue, let's be real, parking sucks most places where there is density. I get it. There's not much a purveyor can do aside from the fact that right next door, there appears to be valet for the other (not named on purpose) restaurant. That's a pretty dog gone good indicator that, yes, one can arrange valet parking if one so desired. Well, Simplethings has no valet. THe buisiness itself is ok in every other respect, well, aside from you can't order from the table. PLus, you get your own water, crayons, etc. My guests, the pint sized one anyway, kept breaking the crayons in half, so I apologize for that right now. But he's 3, so he's gonna break crayons cuz that's his thing. I think about it now, and I tipped my customary amount, I take the tax and double it most of the time, it's routine for me. Prolly cuz the food was pretty good and I asked a few times if there was dairy in this or that. Didn't seem to be a lot in the chicken pot pie I ordered, but the guests cheese laden sandwiches were off limits to me, most times we like to share. Everyone should try a bite of everything in my opinion because that's how you can efficiently know if you'd like to try it next time! So, yeah, go to, but know that you're limited to 1 hour parking when you find it. Try to go further into the residential neighborhood and maybe there's longer parking and shade! I wanted to be close by to see if my car was in danger of ticket. I hate tickets. Liked the pies here though! Got 2, seemed popular, choco cream and the pumpkin. Not too sweet! Enjoy!

Simplethings. Let's keep it simple. Decor was very cute. Tables had brown sheets on them with crayons, yes crayons, to draw while you wait! Employees were very nice too, inviting and warm place. Cubano sandwich, Fried Chix sandwich, tomato soup and chicken salad (I think). Damn the food was good. The chicken sandwich was on the smaller side but was very tasty. The Cubano on the other hand, stacked with meat. Damn that sandwich was good. The soup was standard but thick, very good. Like the name, the place is very simple. It excels in what it does and that's making your stomach happy.

Loved their location in West Hollywood, and was excited to hear that simplethings opened right next to my work! Upon walking in, I noticed the size difference- this location was twice as large, and had a great, open space. The tables are also unique, as it has brown butcher paper and crayons so we could play hangman and connect the box while waiting and doodle. We ordered the roast beef sandwich, egg salad sandwich, lemonade, and a few cutie pies. Egg Salad Sandwich- love that it's on a pretzel bun. It adds so much texture and made it a great contrast to the egg and tomatoes. However, there was not enough egg- I barely tasted any of it, and wish there was more. Roast Beef Sandwich- this was delicious. The beef and caramelized onions were soft, and the horseradish was just the right amount of spicy (may be too spicy for some though). This was definitely my favorite sandwich! Wish it was a little warmer though. Lemonade- a bit watered down, but still decent. I like Olive & Thyme's better. Cutie Pie- I ordered two (peach and french silk) and only the french silk came out. I then asked for my peach, and they gave me pumpkin.... but after I let them know, they gave me a peach on top of the pumpkin. So more pie for me! The french silk consisted of a chocolate like mousse and whipped cream on top, and a layer of crust on the edge. Very light and fluffy! I'm not a big fan of pumpkin, but I thought it was decent. I also got the chef's special (chocolate ganache, caramel, and a pretzel on top) and it was perfectly sweet, and had a crumbly bottom. It was rich, but since it was so small, it was just the right amount. Overall, as a new place on the block, simplethings has definitely got their concept and execution down! There is room for improvement, but it's a great lunch spot as is right now!

We ended up trying it the next day, and we both got the same thing: turkey sandwich with mac & cheese, and we both felt the same way about it: meh. The mac & cheese was good, and I'd order it again, but the Turkey sandwich was pretty pricey for something I could honestly make at home with minimal effort. Even throwing some deli turkey meat on some bread and topping it with some avocado would create the same taste (if not better). Since we live so close, I'm willing to give it one more try, but if the next thing I choose isn't special, we'll just stick to Lemonade and Olive & Thyme.

Great service here and they have gluten free though the pies are not yet gluten free - still hoping. They have a variety of options to choose from. I had a roasted chicken salad and it had the right amount of bite with the spicy pecans. I asked about catering and the cashier went to find a menu for me and came back to my table to give me the information. I will go back and hope to order from here for upcoming events.

As I crossed the threshold, I was a bit confused by the layout, but an employee was very attentive and immediately put me in the right place and took my order with gusto. The avocado melt had a nice variety of flavors for what could be a simple sandwich, and the tater tots had a nice kick and were nicely fried. I also appreciate that they have unsweetened tea (it keeps me from having a soda.) They live up to their name-- simple menu items delivered with a unique flavor kick and by a well-trained, attentive staff. It's the simple things that make for a quality lunch experience!

I've been wanting to try out this place for awhile now, especially since it's walking distance from my office, but the mediocre customer service reviews made me wary. However, I was feeling optimistic and gave Simplethings a try. I was greeted by an eye roll from a female employee who had just sat down to start eating. Sorry I interrupted your breakfast break? She reluctantly took my order, acted utterly confused when I asked to sub avocado for the bacon (she charged me for the avocado anyways), huffed and puffed, and then scurried around the counter to continue eating. The manager (team leader? Who knows) came around shortly after and was attentive. By attentive I mean he didn't throw a fit when I asked for more coffee, yippee. I ordered the breakfast sandwich which was average. Not a ton of flavor, which I suppose appeals to some but I like a little kick in my meal, especially when the spread is a tabasco mayo. The coffee was good but how can you go wrong with Stumptown? Be careful when you use their credit card system. My take out order had a preset 18% gratuity placed on it. The annoyed employee told me if I wanted to change the tip I could. Thanks for the permission? The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated but with so much competition in the area, you have to have more than cute bar stools and coloring tables.

I got the Pulled Chicken Sandwich on Pretzel Bread which was sooooooo yummy. I also got the Salted Caramel Pie which was nice. It's a cute little place to eat.

I went yesterday for lunch and waited for almost 30 minutes for my food. I could see they were focusing on getting out a lot of take out orders. When they came around and asked how everything was, I let the server know it's a deterrent to come back since it was such a long wait and they did not say anything when I ordered. They sent the manager over - he did nothing other than said he would talk to the kitchen. No apology or anything other than they had a lot of take out orders. Apparently take out orders trump those who eat in. This is not being service oriented. While the food is okay, I will not be back or for a very long time.

As Olive and Thyme vacated this storefront for their new place down the street, I wondered what would move into this location, and that wonder no longer exists. Simplethings pretty much is exactly it's name. Some sandwiches, salads, and little pies. They pretty much kept the decor of O&T and changed up a few things for their restaurant. Apparently they have a location elsewhere on the West Side. I felt like this was a scaled down version of O&T, but somewhat cheaper in price with the exception of the pies. They look alright, but I wouldn't even be tempted to purchase one given the pricing on these little bites. I ordered a salad and then waited... and waited... and waited... and began to wonder if they were still growing the lettuce out back. All sorts of people came and went, but there I sat scrolling through Yelp reviews. Finally, a nice gentleman behind the counter noticed I had been standing there for a terribly long time. He asked what my order was and when he talked to the guy assembling orders, I saw him then head into the kitchen and a couple minutes later came out with my salad very apologetically. Good thing he even checked with me or I may still be there waiting. The salad was pretty good, but it isn't anything that puts Simplethings on the map of go-to places for lunch. Maybe I'll be back... maybe. But they need to work out that whole making salad thing.

simplethings is an interesting concept and appropriately placed for the expected studio lunch rush. Unfortunately, the service at this location is less than stellar. A sandwich shop that also serves pies...a great choice for a quick bite or a lunch meeting. The decor of the space is chic enough that it can pass for a high class location, but it all goes back to the service and unfortunately the service just doesn't measure. First of all, they make sandwiches. Hot and cold obviously, but it shouldn't take half an hour to make a sandwich for a to-go order. There's obviously a deficiency in the kitchen that needs to be addressed. Second, it shouldn't take almost 10 minutes to pick up an order. If I placed an order and arrived 30 minutes after I placed the order to a counter that is specifically set aside for take-out orders, I should be in and out in under 3 minutes. That's not the case with simplethings. First, the employees don't seem to want to help you. I can't remember a place that I've been that had more than three employees walk by me when I was standing at the counter. I'm sorry, are you on break or something? Second, should the employees really be doing inventory at the counter during the lunch time rush? Time management and management in general seemed to be missing here. Plus, their attitude when I was finally helped was less than stellar. This place took over the old Olive & Thyme space. If Olive & Thyme had this type of service, they would have gone out of business a long time ago, but since their service is spectacular...they moved to a larger space. If simplethings think they can get by on concept alone, they're in a rude awakening.

I've honestly not left here unpleased. The atmosphere is relatively quiet, clean, and has a really good general ambience. They also have decent climate control plus indoor and outdoor seating. I'm a big tea drinker, so I always request a green tea with honey and lemon. They accommodate my request easily and happily, serving the honey and lemon separately. Unfortunately they use green tea bags rather than loose leaf. Maybe it's the modish side of me, but I do still seem to prefer loose tea. The quirky charm of the place is quickly overwhelmed by the incredible food. If you came for a quick bite in the morning I highly recommend the Green Eggs and Ham. (Don't worry the green is avocado! More like 'Green, eggs, and ham'.) If you've got a sweet tooth they also have some pretty decent pies! A little off-kilter in the way they are composed, a crumbling crust and pudding-like filling, they still knock it out of the park in flavor and aesthetics. The pies come in what I would call a large personal size and a small personal size. You'll know it when you see them. If none of that sounds appealing, which is ridiculous I'm sure, you can still amuse yourself by drawing on your placemat with the crayons at the table.

Listen. These people have the best damn customer service and prove that they care about you time and time again. I was honestly short and brusque over the phone today because I was super busy and in a time crunch, BUT they made sure everything was done and AHEAD of time. They know me and I order quite frequently (always huge orders, too) and I really sincerely feel like a priority to them. Dear Naysayers, shove your rude reviews and eat a pie instead. They come in many flavors.

Caveat: I've only been here once. But counter-caveat: I visited Simplethings because it's one of my wife's favorite lunch spots. As far as I'm concerned, that should counterbalance the fact that I've only had one experience: she's even pickier than I am. I think Simplethings has a great concept going for it. The food is fresh and delicious, there's good variety, and their tiny pies are perfect for people who like a little something sweet at the end of their meal (but don't need a whole pie or slab of cake). The total package! Wifey and I are vegetarians (mostly. We eat sushi. Fish grow on trees, right?). So I was grateful to see a bunch of good veggie options BESIDES the salads. Don't get me wrong: salads are fine (my wife ordered one with her meal and enjoyed it), but it's different when it's the only thing a restaurant offers that you can eat. Not the case here. Along with her salad, my wife got a 1/2 egg salad sandwich on pretzel bread. It was fantastic (I stole a bite). I've never had egg salad like it - made with soft-boiled eggs, it was decadently moist, the pretzel bread soft and chewy, and the sundried tomato spread added bite. Really top-notch. Myself, I ordered the tofu Po' Boy. After a few visits to New Orleans, it's one of the things I really crave and have a hard time finding out here. I wasn't expecting much with tofu, but I was wrong. It was incredibly tasty - cornmeal-crusted tofu added crunch and texture, but it was the tangy sauce and slaw that really pulled it all together. Very authentic-tasting and bursting with flavor. We both finished off with a tiny pie. I could certainly eat more pie, but this is the right size for someone who doesn't want to go crazy (I have to watch myself, otherwise I'll balloon right up. So this way, I didnt' feel like I was denying myself!). We both couldn't resist the key lime... it might be a better story if we'd each had something different, but hey - we have similar tastes. =) The pie was tart and silky... as good a key lime as I've ever tasted anywhere else. I was sad that I missed Coconut Cream Pie day - it's usually my favorite! - but that only means I'll have to come back another day. =) Food comes first for me, so 5 stars is locked in unless something else was terrible. Others have mentioned slow service, and I thought ours was fine - maybe 10% slower than I might have liked, but that may be because I was hungry and everything looked good. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The only advice I'll offer the owners is that there must be a better use that can be made of the space so that there are a few more tables available. It gets pretty packed in there and there's not a lot of room. We took the counter, but I had to squeeze into a weird corner seat by the register because people always do that thing where they sit every other seat so they don't have to sit next to a stranger (God forbid!), making it near impossible for my wife and I to sit together (move over, people!). I will definitely return. I was super-impressed with food quality and variety, and all the desserts I DIDN'T try are beckoning. Definitely check it out!

Nice! Simplethings just moved in to Olive and Thyme's old space and it's another welcome restaurant to Riverside Drive. The remodel of the space is nice and inviting and they have a good amount of seats - I haven't had to wait for a seat yet and I've been a few times now. Fun butcher paper table covers with crayons provided at every seat, so you can doodle at your table while you're waiting for your food. The format is the order at the cashier, they give you a number and they bring your food around style. I love the "serve yourself" H2O fridge in the corner - pre-filled filtered water in glass milk bottles. Very cute and way easier than waiting/hoping that someone will refill your water glass. Their specialty is sandwiches (try the fried chicken sandwich or the thanksgiving sandwich!), salads (tried half a cobb salad and really liked the turkey, blue cheese and perfectly boiled egg half) and soups, and the best thing- pies! I like that you can get a combo of half salad/half soup or half sandwich/half soup or salad, and no restrictions on which sandwich or salad, so you can create your own perfect combo. Service is quick and the food is tasty. They also offer gluten free bread for the sandwiches for an extra dollar. I admit it can get pricey - I've spent over 17 dollars on lunch one time - but for a splurge every so often it's good. They have special pies everyday- I got a mini turtle pie: chocolate ganache, caramel and pretzel crust. So delicious! A warning - the crust is not the flaky pastry kind - it's more the graham crumble kind. I do like they offer the mini pies as that's exactly how much pie I want to have at a time (the size of the pie is about the size of the palm of my hand.) They even sell Stumptown coffee there (ground to your specification - for drip or french press), so now I have a convenient place to get this amazing coffee. All in all, I'll be here often and hope they stick around.

Welcome to the area simplethings! We loved our first lunch here today. Beautifully chic set up, great menu, tasty dishes. Soups, salads, sandwiches and to top off your meal a sweet bite of pie! Hope they continue pleasing the neighborhood so we can continue our patronage.

So fresh and good. I was a little upset because it took a bit, but it was super busy so not their fault. They even gave me a little pie to compensate and I was happy as the hippo. Super nice staff, great food, I highly recommend!!

Went here about three weeks ago for weekend brunch with the wife and two kids. Waitress was hustling, but she was the only one working about 15 tables. We put in our orders in and waited 45 minutes. Still no food. Checked with waitress a couple times. Almost an hour later and no food. Told the waitress to kill the order and went across the street to Chipotle. I'm getting sick of average restaurants taking forever to make eggs and pancakes.

Yelpers, sometimes you disappoint me. This place deserves 5 stars! My fiancé and I came in for brunch on Easter Sunday. Our waitress Tash (I believe) was the most sweet and helpful waitress I have come across in quite some time. It was our first time at this place and our experience couldn't have been better thanks to her. Anyone complaining about the service? Maybe you caught them on a bad day or maybe, just maybe... It's you. I had a 1/2 thanksgiving sandwich and a 1/2 kale sandwich. Both were full of flavor and unique which I loved. Mark had the breakfast sandwich... Quite an experience on its own and absolutely scrumptious. We couldn't leave without trying some pie so we decided to go with the small portions of strawberry banafi and s'more. Tash even brought the strawberry rhubarb for us to try as it was the chefs special for the day- All were amazing and I would love s'more! Haha get it? Sometimes I make jokes. The atmosphere is clean and very cute and the staff was great! Try their coffee it's the best! I will absolutely be returning, quite possibly for lunch today :-)

When was the last time you played with crayons with joy abandon? Well, this place will get you crayons and some great food. For joy, try Tibet. ;) Clean setting. Delicious food. I had a vegetarian sandwich with egg whites and potatoes. The patty in between was the best I've had in a long time. The staff was helpful and welcoming. It's a smallish place, so it can seem crowded. It is on the pricier side. I enjoyed this place. I'll certainly visit again when I'm back in the area.

So far I have only eaten pies... but my pie box assured me I make good decisions. They were right. - Mini Peach Pie - Mini Coconut Pie I felt happiness with each bite. Is this the next evolution of the Dan Tat? ... you know those small egg custards from Dim Sum... My mouth wants more!!! I will return again to consume their lunch foods.

The only reason I have this place 2 stars.. was because of the ok service... I found the food was overly SALTY from the Brussel sprouts, the tomatoes soup, and the roasted chicken salad. .. which was everything I ordered...my friend has the sweet potato sandwich on a pretzels roll that was dry and hard. Make the Sandwich hard and messy to eat... I'm sure this will be my first and last time ratting at this place. The water jug was dirty and has some kind of rust or food particles on it.

I would've given this place 2 stars for the food, but the dessert saved the day and made room to add an additional star. Pulled Chicken Sandwich: NO FLAVOR! Based on the ingredients of this sandwich I expected it to be flavorful....not so much. Every ingredient on the sandwich was another layer of blandness, what an unpleasant surprise. The Caesar Salad was ok (how can you mess that up), but it had a weird after taste. On to the good part....THE DESSERT! The salted caramel pie was delicious, def a must try! The key lime pie was also pretty good, creamy and not overly tart. The rice krispy treats were a pleasant surprise; a nice nostalgic end to a group lunch!

I recently had the pleasure of trying Simplethings out. I didn't really get to eat in. (I was on lunch at work) but the whole pick up experience was beyond pleasant! There's a line specially for pick up/coffee only, which made it EXTREMELY helpful considering I was on a time crunch. Aside from that, the overall vibe is very mellow and modern. If I had to describe the place in one word it would be practical-chic. The service was some of the best around! I've tried mostly all the eateries around the area and have come to have a set of standards for service and I can honestly say they really care about their patrons! The gentleman at the counter was pleasant he inquired about my day and made me feel like he genuinely cared. He was beyond helpful considering my stupid temporary debit card refused to work. My order was really big and consisted of 8 different plates. They got it all right and made sure it was all there before letting me leave saving me time and a second trip. Want a cool down to earth place to eat? Simplethings is simply exquisite!mm

This place has potential! We live in a Toluca Lake, so my daughter and I walked here for lunch. There needs to be more food servers I think. We've been back and the service has improved! Enjoyed the mini pies.

Taking over the Olive and Thyme place after they moved down the block, Simple things does a good job. I have never been blown away by anything there. Salads are ok. Sandwiches aren't bad. So is the Mac n cheese. I felt the grilled cheese was kinda disappointing. What I did love was the butternut squash soup. Not too bad overall.

Great food is always the expectations when you yelp for places to eat but the most amazing thing I would have to say about this place is its amazing service! After working for 10 hours shooting a commercial, we manage to get away for a bite to eat and were cutting it super close to closing time, I do believe we walked in at about 3-5 minutes before closing time. The staff stopped cleaning, sat us down, served us so politely and did it all with a smile and great additude! But let's talk food... It's yummy! Very yummy! Very creative sandwiches and salads plus those pot pies are pretty amazing but the best thing I had was the butternut squash soup! It was rich, hearty, and had a hint of a curry flavor - just simply amazing and really represents the deliciousness of the most simple things.

This place has the best weekend service. We used to come here almost every weekend for brunch since January and the waitress who is a brunette ponytail is the sweetest Ive ever met. I got a birthday pie on my birthday! However, one weekend in March we waited 45 minutes for our food but because we are regulars we just asked her what is going on and she checked came back and apologized complimented us with a pie which was kinda on the sweet side. For some reasons, there's been problem with the wait time and the quality of the food (there was a piece of paper plastic looking substance in our food the following weekend we went, we told the waitress and she said the brunch was on them) vs the price lately so we kinda stopped going but still want to give a shout out to the friendliest waitress there.

If I were just reviewing the fried buffalo chicken sandwich I would give this place 5 stars. I try the buff chix everywhere and am usually let down, but this sandwich is delicious!! Odd choice of side to the sandwich, 2 pickled green beans and a carrot. The service was great when I went. My gf got the roast beef which she sent back because the beef was more tendon than meat, but even the second one wasn't that satisfying. Mini pies are good, nothing to write home about though.

ugh this place. What is "simple" about it? I have no clue! I work in the area and have tried many many times to go there for lunch. The only reason I've decided to go inside was because there were only 3 people in line, and possibly 18-24 people seated at tables eating. They are already eating, I need to clarify. Everytime I go in, I stand in line for a good 5 minutes without moving, and then an employee walks over and tells the people in line it will be 30 minutes for our order. THIRTY. MINUTES. There are 3 people, sometimes 4, in line in front of me. Why does my tuna sandwich with bib lettuce on a 6 grain bread take THIRTY MINUTES. I walk out instantly, everytime. On a previous visit they said it would 20 minutes. Once they said it would be 35 minutes. I cannot understand this place. Hire more people? Maybe that'll help? Or maybe put more people behind the counter making lunch rather than wandering around the front of the house asking people if they're doing ok. I worked in a restaurant for a very long time. I know how these things work. And this place ain't working!! Nothing on the menu is "simple"! If they stuck with their name and made the food "simple", it may not take them half a century to put meat and vegetables between bread. I tried for my last time today, and they sent me across the street to Chipotle, where it took 10 minutes to stand in a massive line and make me a burrito. Damn I hate this place! Close your doors and open up a Mendocino Farms. Their food is just as "simple" and they manage perfectly.

I've been waiting with bated breath for this location to open and I wasn't disappointed. It's very cute and nicely designed inside. I love any menu that includes mini pies. We order out almost everyday for work and have eaten at almost every establishment in this area. This will be a new favorite for sure. Great staff who double checked our order and was incredibly prompt. I got the Cubano and it's a great sandwich. Salted caramel pie for the win!

Messed up our company to go order for 15 people. Took way longer to get lunch back to the office.( like an hour) And my sandwich was still made wrong. Pork Philly was fatty and had virtually no flavor except for the cheese. Ever hear of seasoning roasted pork? Oh, I forgot. Simple. And, they left off the sauted brocollini which is the only thing that might have made the sandwich tasty. Side mixed salad for 2 bucks extra is arugula with two cherry tomatoes. Lots of people dont like JUST arugula. Put it on your menu if that is what you are selling. Not what I would consider a mixed salad. Peach pie was very good (thus the barely 2 star review) but so small that it's really only 2 bites. So maybe they should call it a "bite o pie"... again misleading. Maybe other items are better, some look it , but not sure I will care to find out... Simple is not always a better way to go... :(

Hello and Welcome to Burbank, so glad you're here! The character and atmosphere of "Simplethings" is pleasant and charming. Inside and outside dining. Perfect for anytime, dining alone, with a friend or date night. The salads and sandwiches are wonderful! Classic menu items with updated fresh ingredients. I haven't tired the pies yet, but they are mouth-watering to look at and friends say they are delicious! The staff is very accommodating and very willing to make your dining experience a pleasurable one. I'm sure if they make an order mistake, they would be willing to make it right...right now. Good Luck "Simplethings"!

Got delivery in burbank Food was totally delicious. Like really really really good. Got the bxl sprouts, mac and cheese, a salad and a nice strawberry cream pie and o man that crust on the pie was ridiculous. And the berries themselves were no joke, super fresh.

I'm just loving this new restaurant. The name really does say it all. Simple, fresh, healthy and delicious food. And I'm crazy about the little tart sized pies they feature. Cute place. The only negative is the total lack of parking. About half the time I try to visit this establishment I end up passing right by and going somewhere I can actually find a spot to park. But worth the trouble to try.

Okay, so I can't rate the food here but I can tell you that this place is so disorganized. It's a small place but it is very chaotic. They need to add more tables because they have enough space to do it, so automatically seating is a problem. Plus, there is no host to tell you if you order at the counter or sit down and the employees are running around frantically and basically ignore you. We finally asked someone and when a space cleared at the counter we sat down. A girl took our drink order and we ordered two cappuccinos. Several minutes pass and we still don't have our drinks. We look up and the girl is crying. There was something wrong with the espresso machine and I don't know what happened to her. We saw her walk out and that was that. Another guy tried to help us. He told us that the machine broke because they don't really make the decaf cappuccino that my husband ordered. Decaf espresso dies not cause espresso machines to break. He offered to make two regular cappuccinos but since my husband can't drink caffeine we just canceled the order. We finally ordered food but several people came up and canceled their orders that they had already been waiting for for over 30 minutes. Those people were told that they would have to wait an additional 15 minutes. We were super hungry and didn't want to wait 45 minutes for our food so we canceled our order too. Plus we looked around and it was pretty dirty inside and they left the milk from the cappuccino incident sitting out for at least 20 minutes. It was still there when we left. Maybe the food is good but I don't think we will return to find out.

The food tasted amazing! Great sized sandwich and salad combo for the price very filling. The service was very slow and they seemed to for get about the outside patrons. I had to walk in to ask for assistance and then again to pay my bill after long wait times.

I was looking for a local lunch place today and my GPS kept taking me to cafes that no longer existed. I was about to give up and was walking to Subway when I passed Simplethings. I'm so glad I went in! The sweet potato sandwich was something I never would have thought of and that I'm so glad I tried. It was amazing - sweet potato, avocado, apples, and I know it sounds weird, but SOOOOO good! And if that wasn't enough, a mini key lime pie was the perfect ending. I also have to say thanks to the staff that was quick, attentive, cheerful and helpful since I had never been there before. Next time I'm in Burbank I'll go out of my way to eat there again!

I can't say how wonderful this place is. I don't understand any of the negative comments. Each an every dish I've had (I've had a lot) has been superb! The sweet potato sandwich is the bessssst. Absolutely love it. Their roasted tomato soup is also fantastic. The manager and staff are always upbeat and polite!

Such a great place! I'm so glad it's in the neighborhood. After their sampling at Taste of Toluca, my husband and I came here for lunch. Food was delicious, especially the chocolate peanut butter pie and the service was astounding! This is my new go-to restaurant. Great surroundings as well. Well done!!

Right away I should admit a family member works here. I did not tell anyone nor was this person here when I was. My egg salad sandwich, while "simple" was quite good. A few extras added to it in order to liven it up and the pretzel roll was a nice touch. I was there late in the day and they were out of the pie size I ordered so they brought me 3 of the tiny ones instead. No complaints on that as I devoured those in short order. I think it was a banana, chocolate & peanut butter or something similar. My advise - leave room for the pie!!! Not that familiar of the area, I pulled into the alley and a couple employees were back there and actually working. They were also nice enough to move aside and allow me a parking space. Nice! Initial wait service was a bit slow, but improved during the short time I was there. Definitely recommend.

We have come into Simple Things several times and have always enjoyed the food. But there is a guy that works the late shift on the weekend ( I hate that we don't know his name! ) who is absolutely AMAZING. He's always in a great mood and gives fantastic service! It's worth coming in just to say hi to him. He always makes our day!

Tried delivery from here on a whim. Can't speak to their delivery (we used a service), but the food was fab! The boyfriend had the steak pot pie and I had the sweet potato sandwich. The boyfriend's not big on words, but he said the pot pie was "really good." The sandwich was one of those rare, awesome vegetarian gifts from God. A hot cake of sweet potato on a super salty roll with crunchy slaw, creamy avocado and chèvre, and crispy tart apples. Bottom line: we loved both - and we'll be back for more. Two cutie pies (peanut butter chocolate and salted caramel) and one regular-sized pie (banana cream). They were all sweet and light - not too rich. The banana wasn't super banana-ey, but it was creamy and sweet. The others delivered as promised. Welcome to the neighborhood, Simplethings!

Accidentally wandered in here on opening day thinking it was another local restaurant. Boy were we happily surprised! We ordered the cubano and the turkey avocado sandwiches. The meat in both sandwiches was absolutely amazing. The pork was especially juicy. We also ordered the brownie and the bonafee mini pies. Holy Moses. SO good! Came back again last week and ordered the pork sandwich with brocolini. Never tasted anything like it. So delicious. And the matzo ball soup is very unique and good too. SUPER friendly and knowledgable staff. Our sandwich came out wrong so they have us a free large tortoise pie (which was amazing). We still haven't tried the original restaurant, but simplethings is our new favorite spot!

One time I was having a terrible day, so I popped in to simplethings on my way home and got a pie. At the front steps of my apartment complex, I dropped the pie. I was pretty devastated, considering how bad things had gone up to that point. I called in to see if I can get the pie replaced, knowing full well they didn't have to. The guy behind the register didn't even hesitate to reply, and in less than 10 minutes (I live across the street) I had a new pie at no extra charge. And it was delicious! Definitely brightened my mood, and simplethings is my new go-to for bad days. Highly recommended!

I had high hopes for this place--soups, salads, pies, what could be wrong? To start off, we tried to order pot pies, which are on the menu. They didn't have any. Then we ordered the Mac and cheese. Menu just says "Mac and cheese." Restaurant is called "simple things," right? When it came to the table, it looked sickly. It was gray. It tasted awful. We inquired--"simple" Mac and cheese was made with bechamel sauce and fontina cheese. Their chili? Made with garbanzo beans. Then there are their pies. I ordered one of every pie to bring back for sampling and each one was worse than the other--crusts were tough, fillings were too sweet, they were all overcooked. Never going back.

4/5/15 - Went for lunch. We had a new server and she was totally nice and attentive. Need to know the menu a little better when we had a few questions, but - first day - no issues with learning! The 3 stars come from the food - average and kitchen service. There were about 3 other tables when we ordered. It took almost 30 minutes to get our food. I totally understand its a holiday - maybe it had a new chef as well?

Wow. Great sandwiches. Husband got the fried chix sandwich, it was fried to perfection! And that's coming from a southern girl. I got the sweet potato sandwich and my mind was blown. Soooo delicious. Highly recommended, it's the pretzel roll that tops it off.

Great food! Great location. Service was a little bit slow, but this location has only been open for three weeks, so all is forgiven. Wife and I shared the butternut squash soup. I had the Turkey Avocado with Tater Tots. She had the sweet potato sandwich and chili. Awesome!

My daughter and I were pretty excited about having lunch here and ending on a pie but we didn't get past the dishes. The cashier who took our order didn't tell us that the tator tots has red pepper all over them. My daughter was bummed she couldn't eat them. The mac cheese we ordered also had red pepper. I ordered the cubano, my ham was overcooked hard/rubbery, the pork was still cold smh. You can see the kitchen from the counter it there was food all on the floor, it was unsightly. The counter was disorderly in general. I didn't get what the deal was with the service. Is there waiter service, do you order then sit? What is the deal, if order and sit may we have a number. I went up to pay and asked for a box for a sandwich and got a tiny box where the sandwich didn't fit? Hello, management? Do you guys care how disorganized your establishment is? I was so underwhelmed that we skipped the pie and coffee.

A 3.5 in my book! I had the tuna sandwich... good, but could've been better with a little celery and onion. They have gluten free bread, and it's good! The tater tots? OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD. Super garlicky and cheesy though (ask them not to sprinkle parmesan like I would have had I known)... so not exactly date food if you plan on a kiss afterwards! ;-)

  • Carla F.

Loved the Tater tots! Not sure if 3.75 for a small is worth it thou. 3.00 Would be a little better. Got the veggie #2 sammy and it was ok.. a little weird at 1st and again not worth the price. Not sure why everything is so much money there.. They replaced olive and thyme.. another way to pricey place.. But then again I am in Burbank. Would i go back?.. Nah unless they lower those prices.. Tater tots and a sandwich for over 13. is crazy! I tried it thou so thats good.

I dont really know this neighborhood, so I was very pleased to have stumbled into this place! I'm always pleased to find fast, healthy, delicious lunch options and Simple Things delivers on all accounts. They have a wide array of options, salads sandwiches and the like. I had a Greek salad and roasted tomato soup- both delicious. Give this place a shot!

I ordered "The Rainy Day". Which is an overpriced gilled cheese with a bowl of tomato soup. The soup was ok but the sandwich was cold so I sent it back. Then it came back cold again, way udercooked. But I ate it. At this point i just wanted to leave. But the manager did try and make up for it by offering pie and a discount.

I had a rather large order to place over the phone. Jen did a great job offering suggestions and processing my lunch order. Everyone in my office loved their lunches. I had the albacore tuna salad and that was great! It had caper berries and the dressing complemented the salad well. I will come back for Jen's other suggestions, the fried chicken sandwich and the shrimp po boy.

I rarely go out to lunch during the week, so I was excited to try this place my colleague chose. The menu is pretty limited, but I ended up with a vegetable salad. No meat..,just grilled veggies. It was $11.25 and came out drowning in dressing. It was just so so. Nothing special but not worth what I paid for it. It didn't come with a roll or anything (I happen to like something to scoop up my salad with). Oh yeah and they don't have ranch dressing. Thumbs down!

Really wanted to like this place. I liked the menu before I went in. We ordered the roast beef sandwich, roasted chicken salad, and fried chix. The sandwiches were good. The roasted chicken salad had good flavors, but the warm chicken wilted the lettuce and just had a weird mixture of warm/cold flavors. I would go back except service was awful. There was maybe 4 other couples there and after we got our water and orders in, there was no service at all. We waited about 10 minutes after finishing our meal and was unable to get anyones attention to order a pie or get our check. We finally had to walk to the cashier's drawer and ask for our check. This restaurant should probably be set up to order at the cashier's, get a number, and they bring your food out.

This place is really good for a breakfast sandwich! Didn't know much about the place before we came in for Brunch. It was a pleasant experience, they have a lovely pie selection in all sorts of sizes- $2.50 for a tiny pie is pretty good-and the menu is simple and straight forward! I'll be back again yo try their lunch menu for sure!

They use real turkey breast! This is very exciting for me because I hate deli turkey. I had the turkey avocado sandwich and the butternut squash soup. Great combo. The sandwich was really fresh and the bread was soft, a little heavy on the mayo, but that's easily remedied. The soup is velvety smooth and full of flavor. My friend had the "rainy day," grilled cheese on pretzel bread with tomato soup. Perfect for the rare slightly cloudy day in LA. The soup/sandwich combo cost around $11 + tip. The staff is super friendly, tip them well! This will definitely become a permanent lunch spot for us. Can't wait to try the desserts.

New spot just opened up down my street. Great new sandwich and pie joint. My first time there I had to get some healthy stuff because I'm on a diet during the week but man was this some good stuff. Got the half Greek salad and half tomato soup while I watched my buddy slam a fried chicken sandwich/thanksgiving turkey sandwich and a mud pie. My food was great and the look on my buddy's face when he took his first bite was pretty self-explanatory. I'll be back for some banana toffee pie and fried chicken!

I came in once before a few weeks ago to try their pot pies, but at that time they were sold out. Today I tried again and they still had chicken in stock - what a treat! It's a beautiful flaky pastry crust, gorgeous filling with rosemary and other fragrant spices...delish! It couldn't have taken more than a few minutes after placing my to-go order to get my food. Fabulous! My only mistake was not ordering a sweet pie as well - a mistake i won't make again. :)

Food is good. Really, really need to get their sh*t together. This location just opened, and they have kinks to work out. First time for lunch, they warned that it would take 20 minutes to get food. It took 40. In that particular neighborhood, everyone is on their lunch break, and making people late returning to work is inexcusable. I watched them have to turn about 20 or so people away because they were so behind. When my food finally came, it was great. (bbq chicken sandwich). Second time I went there ordered a Cobb salad to go. When I got back to work and started eating the thing (while working- not paying attention) I noticed it was heavy on the kale. Didn't think much of it because it said it was mixed greens. After mindlessly eating the whole thing, I thought, "that was the worst cobb salad I've ever had in my life." I couldn't even taste the blue cheese. That's because the girl putting in the order put in an order for a kale salad. So I just mindlessly ate a kale salad.I *hate* kale salad. By the way, if you do like kale salad, be warned this one is very light on the chicken. The food at this place is really good (except the kale salad, but if you're one of these people on this stupid kale salad bandwagon, I don't know what to tell you), and I love the little pies, but you might want to wait a few months if you want halfway decent service.

I've been on a mission to seek out quality pie in the area, which is no easy task as pie is greatly underrated in SoCal. There is more to life than cupcakes, people! So I went to Simple Things specifically for the pie. Finding parking in Toluca Lake midday is a nightmare but the people inside were very nice. I got a mini peach pie and a steak and lager pie as an after thought (because I love all pie--both sweet and savory). The steak and lager pie was fantastic and came with a little side of a tangy gravy that rocked my world. The crust was flaky. The interior flavorful. Perfection. However, all of their fruit pies had a crumb crust, including the peach. In my humble, pie loving opinion a fruit pie should have a flaky top crust. I appreciate a fruit crumble (with a crunchy top layer) or cobbler (with sweet/not soggy biscuits) but I'm just not interested in a thick, dry layer of flour and brown sugar on top of my fruit pie, so the peach pie disappointed me. I'm not sure why they could manage to put a flaky crust on top of the steak and lager pie but not the dessert pies. It is a mystery. So unfortunately this will not be my go-to place for dessert, but I might be back for a sandwich or the steak and lager.

Ordered lunch for some of my crew and pies for everyone. Everything was excellent! Chicken Pot Pie was beautiful and yummy, Tuna Melt was fresh and flavorful, salads were great and the pies were to die for! We put out a variety of the pies and folks wolfed them down. Salted Caramel was the fav.
