Popped in on the 4th to get a slab of ribs and brisket. Super long line that moved pretty quickly. The place was packed! This was my first time not going to a picnic, but I still wanted BBQ and I was satisfied. The ribs were good and the brisket was trimmed of fat just like I requested. An added treat... one of the owners was on site handing out their signature BBQ sauce! She was so sweet and thanked us customers for stopping by. Truly enhanced my experience today.

Continues to be the gold standard for southern style BBQ in the bay. Ribs, links and brisket are all terrific, but the links are still the best...and the only thing that is ALWAYS great. The ribs and brisket can sometimes be dry, but the links are always on hit. And I love their sauce.

Who doesn't like Everett and Jones! This place is an institution and the food is damn good. It's a BBQ joint and a colorful experience.

I love three ways! E&J's three-ways... I'm talking chicken, brisket and hotlinks; brisket hotlinks and ribs; ribs, briskets and HOTLINKS!! Heck, put their medium sauce with a splash of hot on Boca Burger and I'd tare it up! I'm actually eating a Boca Burger with EJ medium right now! Bout to smother some broccoli in the sauce too! Pretty much every form of meat here deserves 5 stars - the sides are a different story... to each his own! Note: The food in this lil shack is better than what you get in the downtown restaurant, and arrives WAY faster. Yeah, it seems a lil hood, and seating is minimal, but it's all good cause I'd get sick with this anywhere but a public restroom.

This place has some darn good bbq ribs. If you can handle spicy, get the spicy. It's REALLY spicy though (haha). We took a to-go order and made a huge mess back at my friend's apartment. Amazing bbq ribs. I recommend you get both the spicy and non spicy so you can switch off to give your mouth a rest from the spiciness. Not really much else to say - it's just damn good.

I was in Berkeley and my dad said I had to go to Chez Panisse. I went and had one of the most forgettable meals of my life. Boring. Bland. Food for fancy grandmothers. Fuck you Alice Waters. Fuck you all. A few days later I went to Everett & Jones and had the ribs with the hot sauce. The hot sauce was not just hot, it was HOTTTTTTTTTT!!!! It was a profound spiritual experience that left me shaken to my core. My eyes went out and I had visions of parallel universes and truths unknown to men since the birth of time.I had to have my girlfriend hug me afterwards and couldn't talk for an hour as I processed what had happened to me. If Chez Panisse is Satan of bland, Everett & Jones is God smiting my taste buds with cruel but kind lightning bolts of flavor. This is the only restaurant people should be talking about in Berkeley. The alpha, the omega, and every letter in between! Burn down the rest of the city and leave only this place standing. And if you ate it without the hot sauce, please don't even write about it.

You know there's some serious BBQ going on when you see smoke coming out of their stack. I haven't been in years and I didn't realize that there was 1 in Berkeley. There was quite a line when we decided to stop in and they prepare your order as they go. We ordered the BBQ chicken and the bf got his fave, brisket, to take home. I couldn't stop raving about the delicious BBQ sauce and potato salad. They give very good portions. Although I wish it came with another delicious side like cornbread or beans. Instead of 2 slices of wheat bread. Prices are in the middle. But the flavor of their BBQ sauce wil stick with me forever.

Not someplace you would naturally stop and try if you were driving by. The brisket was juicy and the sauce had a good amount of kick. It came with a measly scoop of potato salad that was good, but nothing too spectacular and 2 slices of bread (I'm assuming to sop up all the extra BBQ sauce). I've tried better BBQ places in Southern California, but for being basically a fast-food sort of BBQ joint, not too shabby. I made funny small talk with the man working the register too so I can't complain about the service! Minus a star because I was sort of creeped out by the man that set up a tent and was trying to solicite buyers for some knock off merchandise.

I love meat! I love BBQ! Everett & Jones Barbeque is the best I've ever had. You can smell this place a block away. Came here yesterday night and it was July 4th. This place was packed with a line spilling out the door. The menu is simple. Chicken, ribs, brisket, or links dinner. Combo the items for additional cost. Even better, do a combo of all 4 meats for $20. Each meal comes with sliced wheat bread and potato salad. The meat is drenched in mild, medium, or hot BBQ sauce of your choice. Surprisingly, the sauce is perfect and does not overwhelm the meat. The chicken and ribs fall off the bones. The brisket is so tender and juicy. The links are super tasty. The potato salad is super. My mouth is watering as I write this review. The 4-way combo feeds my boyfriend and I, with leftovers for lunch the next day for one. We also brought home the peach cobbler. We warmed it in the microwave and it was sooooo satisfying. The staff is quick and efficient, so the line moves along fairly decently. I cannot wait to go back for more.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' BOUT, BABY! This bbq joint is the 2nd best in the bay area (and the best is top secret!) I always order their brisket sandwich and am able to share it because it comes with a lot of meat. Their potato salad is more of a mashed potato consistency then what I'm used to, but it is really delicious, especially with some of their medium bbq sauce on top of it.

I recently revisited this place, and I recall it being much better in the past! The potato salad was tasty as usual, but the meat wasn't as savory as I remembered. (I haven't been here for a few years though). Additionally, it is pricier than I recall, though prices may have changed in the past few years. I was a little disappointed, but I'm still giving this place a 3, because of what I remember from the past and the fact that the service was extra friendly that day.

Wow. Okay, where do I start? We walked in looking for some grub and all I knew was that I was going for barbeque. None of us had been here before, but when we walked in and saw the place was filled with smoke, we realized we were in for a treat. We got the chicken, brisket, and ribs for a little bit of variety. Everyone should know a few things though: 2 orders are enough for 3 and 3 enough for 5. We had way more than we could possibly eat. Each order comes with a scoop of "potato salad" (honestly, I think they ran out of potato salad, because this was just mashed potatoes), and 2 slices of wheat bread (wonderbread, honestly). The low-quality bread was meh, but it was perfect to slop up all of the delicious barbeque sauce. Speaking of sauce: the hot bbq sauce was kick ass... it really was incredible. Just hot enough that your eyes and nose water, but it doesn't overpower the food. The chicken was awesome, the ribs were the best, but unfortunately the brisket was a little stringy and tough. I think a lot of people rate this down because 1) it doesn't have a lot of space, 2) parking on San Pablo can be shitty, 3) the prices are high, but not really. But if you just keep those things in mind before you go, you're in for a delicious treat. I haven't been able to find decent barbeque so close to my house until now... I'll be coming back for sure.

I've had ribs in Texas.... Sorry Texas, you don't have anything on these folks!!! Husband and I ordered a pork rib dinner and a peach cobbler. Comes with 7 ribs, potato salad, beans, 4 slices of bread (which We never eat) and a side of beef links... Potato salad= good, Beans=good, beef links= great, Ribs= amazing, Peach Cobbler=to die for! Service=very friendly and in my husbands words overall "amazeballs"!!! We got through about 1/2 of the ribs, some beans and potato salad and some beef links survived. We killed the cobbler! We have left overs for tomorrow and all for about $20... And mind you, they close at 9pm, we showed up at 9:30 and they still wowed us! We will be back.

I truly enjoyed the food (barbecue ribs, chicken, mac & cheese, and greens). It was delicious. I also have to say that you get a lot of food for your dollar. I had enough for seconds! I can't stand going to restaurants and simply paying for the presentation of the food . After I leave I'm still hungry . THANKFULLY THAT WAS NOT THE CASE AT EVERETT & JONES!! The only reason I can't give 5stars is the amount of time we had to wait on our food.

Oh E&J, what has happened to you after all these years? I'm not sure if it's this way now or if it was because it was near closing time. This place has gone downhill since the last time I was here (~5 years ago). The place/decor has not changed which means it's a cool dive. But, the food? OMG, I was so disappointed. Let me run it down for you: 1) Brisket - Cut thin and long but was tough as leather. I thought it used to be cut/chopped rough where the pieces weren't all the same shape, etc. Regardless, I remember it being so tender and juicy. What happened? Did the recipe or quality of meat change? Where's the smoke ring? It cost $21 for a two-way. That's a lot of money! 2) Chicken - A bit tough and missing any smoke flavor. Tip: start providing knives as it's too hard to eat the chicken and brisket without one. 3) Green Beans - Lacked any flavor 4) Mild Sauce - Basically colored water...I should have asked for their medium sauce. 5) Mac n Cheese - ok 6) Beans - ok The only "saving grace" was their beef link sausage. They tasted just as they did years ago. Mind you these are not hot links! But the flavor and texture were spot on! Oh, they do not accept credit cards. But, they have an ATM there so you can get cash after having to pay a fee. Argh! I am so glad Emergency BBQ is close to me. The only issue is I have to wait until its either Wednesday or Saturday to get brisket! Oh, Armadillo Willy's brisket is good and better than E&J.

I came here after a long day of eating, so my appetite wasn't at its highest. I grabbed a beef brisket dinner which was on the higher end (19 dollars for meat and two sides). This place is take out only so we headed home to go eat. The beef brisket was quite tender and the sauce was very yummy. However, the my two sides, Mac and Cheese and green beans were just okay. I wasn't impressed with either. I also tried the ribs and the chicken which were both good too. The ribs was a huge portion! I was told before coming here that this was the best bbq my friend had ever had, so I cam in with high expectations. Although the food was not bad, it was not the best bbq I have ever had. For the price and the portions, it might be worth it to share an entree.

Yummy yum yum! I'm on a BBQ sauce high right now. Circumstances led us here today in lieu of a Labor Day BBQ and I'm so glad we came in! The place was packed and i had been here before in my college days, but I was craving some ribs. I ordered the pork rib dinner and honestly wish we had split the order- very generous portions of food. Guess I'll have lunch for tomorrow. The dinner comes with ribs, potato salad, and baked beans for $15. The owner was there handing out a jar of sauce to everyone who came in as a token of her appreciation. They also sell the sauce at Whole foods if you need your fix. We'll definitely be back for the cobbler.

Went in here for the brisket sandwich today. What a loser!! $10.40 got me some tough, chewy meat, most of which went into the garbage can. Not to be forgotten were the two pieces of squishy Wonder bread and the mediocre potato salad. I don't mind paying good money, but I expect a good product. I will definitely not repeat. I can't help but wonder how a place like this stays in business.

Back in the days this was the spot to hit after work or just because you wanted you bbq. I was quite shock at how bad the quality of was food, it was bad. I order ribs and links combo tow of them with potato salad as the side dish, one peach cobbler and german chocolate cake. It comes to 55.00, buck, wow this should be heck of good. I text my husband, I I got us BBQ for dinner, my text back was yummy! lol, I get home and I should took a picture of the food, I had about 4 ribs and a whole link, with sauce, meat was tender and season well. But the potato sales was horrible, dry NO seasoning at all, with the skin left on still. I deal with that, but dry as heck. We both threw that out to the dog. The dessert cake was dry, my husband said it had to be sitting out for a few days, for it was so dry. My peach cobbler has no juice and but lots of crust, bottom-line we will not go back.

I've been coming here for years now! I prefer this location over the Oakland location, the BBQ always seems fresher than the Oakland spot. Perfect smokey taste and huge portions, the Hot bbq sauce is to die for!

Yesterday was my first time visiting Everett & Jones, and I have to say, I loved how nice the man at the counter was, and I appreciated how saucy and fatty the pork ribs were. I am admittedly not a frequent BBQ eater (I have health nut tendencies, and BBQ is not the healthiest food out there), but I'm from Atlanta, GA, too, so I can DEFINITELY appreciate delicious, saucy pork ribs, and what I ate was certainly that. What I liked best, though, was how friendly the service was. When the man told me the place is cash only, I was mortified to find only $8 in my wallet (my total was $10 plus some change). Instead of being annoyed, though, the man just said, "Hey, it's alright--I can work with what you got there. How much you have?" I was like, "Oh, no, I don't want to do that to you--do you know if there's an ATM machine nearby?" and just as he was saying, "Nah--it's okay, it looks like you've got enough" I turned and saw that there's actually an ATM right by their front door! So I pulled some money and paid him the full amount, but I really appreciated that they weren't pushy about the price and were willing to err on the side of generosity. The place has a very friendly, neighborhoody vibe. Would definitely recommend supporting this local business. :)

I'll tell you what, this place smells fantastic. I didn't know anything about this place, but I followed my nose to find it. I got the beef brisket and was very happy with it. My mother got the chicken and she was happy with it as well. The second time I came I got the Beef links and I wasn't really a fan, the links themselves were basically flavorless and the only saving grace was the sauce. As the other reviews say, the staff is pretty dry. They move slowly and are a little terse, but don't come off as rude.

Service here felt like I was on another planet. As I walked in, nobody was at the front counter, but there was a man chopping meat on the back counter just behind it. He motioned me over to the register, which wasn't visible from the door, and asked what I wanted. I said a brisket sandwich. He seemed to nod OK, then went back to chopping meat. Wait a while. Then, without having talked to anybody else in the interim, he came up to the register and said they were out of brisket. OK, I said, I'll have the rib sandwich. He said OK, then went back to chopping meat. I figured that eventually two things ought to happen: (1) I would give him money; (2) He would bring me food. But it wasn't clear when these things might happen, or in which order. Eventually they did. My so-called sandwich was a small order of ribs, a scoop of potato salad, and a couple pieces of bread inside one of those plastic clamshells so fiercely sealed I literally cut my finger open - blood and everything - while trying to unfasten it. THe ribs were meaty, but very chewy - the opposite of tender, which is what bbq is supposed to be - and rather undercooked. The sauce, tasty but watery. This is not the great bbq you're looking for.

Delicious brisket and pork ribs! Nice young woman at the counter. One of the best I've had in Cali

Even though it was busy I got my order quick but wish I never had. the chicken was so dry I could hear it screaming for a sip of water. I know there's a drought but damn...The sauce was good (as usual) but that didn't help me choke down that chicken. If I hadn't gotten the food to go I would have asked them to re-do my order. So maybe check out your food before you leave--especially if you order chicken....

Love this place. Stumbled on it one day. Could smell the tractor beam from across University. Got out of the car and could see the stains on the outside brick from the smoker. This place is legit for west coast. Total take out joint. No frills old school diner. Random stickers everywhere. Helps pass the time laughing while you wait if you're sick of staring at your phone. The brick pit they have melts me ever time I walk in. Ooh the smell. Slice of heaven. Got mild ribs with extra hot on the side just to be safe "the first time". I don't normally like really hot. The ribs were deliciously smoked and tender. The sauce was tasty but I needed the kick. Tossed the hot sauce on and went to town. So good! It was nice to have that slice of wonder bread to sop up the sauce. For as nice as the Jack London restaurant was, they just didn't taste the same as the San Pablo shop. Maybe I'm being overly dive romantic on the experience but my tongue and nose never lie.

I went to lunch with a friend here the other day and a woman walking by came over asking for money. Instead of chasing her away from the customers the owner kindly asked her to let her customers eat in peace and then bought her a hot meal. It was a really classy way to handle the situation. Definitely earned my respect and (if I weren't already a fan because of the great food) a loyal customer.

I upgraded my review from a "1 star" to "4 stars" because the owner called me this morning in response to a letter I sent regarding customer service issues that I felt were offensive. Not only did I receive a heartfelt apology, but the owner articulated specific actions she was going to take. The food, in my opinion, is indeed good, but as the owner insisted in our phone conversation, customer service is equally important.

So far so good. What called me to this place was the intoxicatin smell as I was driving by. I ordered the BBQ pork ribs which where delicious, and BBQ brisket they both come with a side of beans and potato salad. Everything was so good delish and flavorful and the portions were good size. And for dessert peach cobbler ahhhh(mouth watering like Homer Simpson) I'll come back to this place for sure

The food is great and I've bought food here and at the Oakland location many times, but I don't think I'll be back after tonight. I ordered two rib dinners and gave the cashier my debit card--actually, my father's debit card, as I live with him and take care of him and I was buying dinner for us. The cashier asked for my ID and I gave it to him, saying that the card was my father's, but I used it all the time. (We have the same last name.) He said he couldn't take it unless the name was the same on the ID. So I gave him my debit card. He told me it wasn't going through. No "sorry" or anything, just handed it back to me. I said I was sure there was nothing wrong with the card and asked him to try again. He said he'd swiped it twice and he couldn't do it again. Why? No real explanation. I asked him to enter the number manually. He said he couldn't. I asked why. He said if I didn't like it I could talk to the manager, who he said was named Mark. He gave me the phone number and I called it. A man answered, and when I began explaining that the cashier was having problems with my debit card, Mark grunted "Leave a message," and hung up. The cashier called him and then gave his phone to me. I explained the problem. Mark said that even if a card went through, the bank could still take the money back. (So why would they ever accept any debit card or credit card? Why not insist on all cash?) Mark said there was an ATM. I asked the cashier why he hadn't said there was an ATM. He said he had. He hadn't. Again, no smile, no sorry, no attitude that I was a customer trying to give the place my business and perhaps they ought to be helpful. So I used the debit card--the one he couldn't get to work--to withdraw $200, or $165 more than I needed for the dinner, and paid cash. If my father hadn't been waiting at home for his dinner, I would have walked out. I won't walk back in. I'll go to Smoke down the street or somewhere else. And maybe you'd like to know, Mark, that I just shared this review with my 3300 followers on Twitter.

The food is good. But the service is about as friendly as a rattle snake. If I'm going to give you my business and money, I have to like you! If I feel you can care less about me. Then I don't like you and I don't care how good you food is your not getting my money.

Awesome!!! We were in the mood for bbq and we went to KC's bbq as we've eaten there twice before and loved it. This time, Saturday night at 7pm, KC's was out of brisket. Really?!?!? So I yelped bbq and found this place. WOW!?! Plus they weren't out of brisket! I hate saying it but I think we've found a new bbq place. Delicious!!

Ugh. Whenever I come here, pull into the 99 c/ parking lot, the first smell that hits me is the smokey BBQ. Do you know that feeling you get when the little things in life make you happy? Well for me, this is one of them. I've gotten the brisket and pork rib dinners and omg, the sauce. It's simply the perfect balance of honey, spice, and BBQ sauce. Pretty decent portions, but a little pricy for what it is... you get two slices of bread, and sides of mashed potatoes and beans. For $15 ish. Makes me feel like Frank Underwood coming here.

Definitely wasted my 17 bucks. I'm hoping this was just a bad day. Ordered links with Mac n cheese and potato salad. Links fell apart like dog food and I didn't have to chew it was so soft. Mac n cheese had no flavor at all and noodles were undercooked. Potato salad was bitter with chuncks of potato skin in it. Bread was hard around edges. Employees were nice and place was clean so I give it a star.

Sometimes, you just need some grilled meat. Unless you are vegetarian, in which case, you are lucky and you don't. Since I live nearby, I get my barbecue fix at Everett and Jones. No-nonsense, homemade grilled barbecue to near perfection. I prefer my meat on the tender side, whereas at Everett & Jones it is a bit crispier (hence the "near" and the 4 stars), but it is always consistent, with a smooth smoky flavor and friendly service. The ribs are grilled/smoked/magicked on-site, in an old fashioned oven-like thing (I clearly do not cook meat when left to my own devices) and the people working there really care about the quality of the meat served. The menu for some reason always confuses me (there are a lot of funny stickers cluttering where I think the menu should be, so I end up lost in reading them, then realizing there is a line behind me), so I rush-order the rib dinner, which translates to a huge stack of ribs on my plate, well seasoned beans and a small potato salad (which I tend to ignore). Must know-tip: BRING CASH! There is an ATM on-site, but like many places in San Francisco, this is also a cash-only establishment.

Maybe this place really calls for 3 stars instead of 4, and maybe nostalgia keeps me coming back - years after my time at Cal, maybe it is a dive, lacks ambiance, is located in a somewhat sketchy area, and doesn't have the best customer service ... but dammit - I just cannot get over the smoked goodness of their links. So when I am craving BBQ, I cross the bridge and head on over to E&J every single time. It makes no difference if I am not in the mood to get dressed and deal with East Bay traffic. It is for these reasons that I must give them 4 stars.

  • Christina M.

Yes!! I score because it's in my neighborhood. I had the chicken & brisket combo- it was more than enough. Had a bite of my mom's sweet potato pie, also well done. So so good. And watch yourself, spicy is made with habenero. Med is just right.

I hate when I'm hungry and settle for something that ends up not tasting good. Well it's another one of those nights, the food is gross. I ordered the beef link dinner and it's definitely not what I wanted. Needs more sauce, they didn't have anymore beans.

The Best BBQ in the East Bay. I come here every time I'm in the bay. The brisket and the chicken are my favorites but also love the links. The BBQ sauce is what makes the meal.

The food is nasty as the attitude. Try KC bbq down the street. LOL!! I was waiting in line OUTSIDE with my dog, when some blonde haired old lady told me I couldn't order TAKE OUT. So I showed her my service dog letter, after she insisted he should be wearing a vest. She said she was the owner, but couldn't prove it. Anyway, I didn't even get close to entering this dump. Decided the attitude wasn't worth it. Hers and mine. I'll never step foot in here. There are many more accommodating places in Berkeley, trust me. PS I ended up in Albany, sitting in an outdoor cafe with charlie. They made him a hamburger, at least 6 oz. FREE OF CHARGE! Think about your 'tude, dumbass.

It's a good rib... I'm not going to lie. If you order the "hot" sauce, make sure you like HOT. It doesn't mess around. Having said that, make sure you try the chicken too. Lot's of extra napkins.

  • Olamide N.

I live near them so I go here relatively often. They are pretty good, I always get the 4 way, beef links and brisket, chicken, and pork ribs, definitely like the fact that its a straightforward bbq shack, no gimmicks

  • Phillip J F.

Stopped by while we were getting car work done in the area and grabbed a beef brisket sandwich. The bbq sauce was pretty good but the brisket was a little fatty and the 2 slices of bread in the sandwich bag seemed a little uninspired....which carries over to the staff. They did a great job but just didn't seem happy or friendly in any real way.

It is what it is... If you're from any of the great BBQ capitals of the US (you know- KC, Texas, NC, Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, etc.) then you'll really not like this version. But if you don't know any better then this version is just fine.

Not the cleanest or most sanitary feeling place, but damn the barbecue is legit. Beef links are awesome, everything slathered in sauce. Deeee-lish~!!

The last couple times I've eaten there, the food has been sub standard. The ribs were tough and tasted like it was from last week. The brisket and the links weren't much better. VERY disappointed at the quality.

Visited this place for the first time last night, HORRIBLE customer service. The cashier had the worst attitude and dropped my change and receipt all over the counter, didn't even acknowledge it, and walked away. So I demanded my money back and told them I'd never visit again. And I'm sure I'm not the first to make that decision, based solely off of the attitude of the cashier.

This location isn't as large and classy as the Jack London location but it has its own charm. This E&J is right off San Pablo and University of a busy intersection. You step up to a counter and can order their bbq items as a sandwich or as dinner meals. There is some seating inside and a bunch of patio tables outside. One time going there for lunch I ordered a two way meal of beef brisket and ribs. I ordered it with the spicy flavored sauce. - If you can handle and like spicy food, the spicy sauce is the way to go. I thought I could handle it but I guess I got the good stuff that time. It hurt *so good*. - Their meat was warm and juicy but I think the sauce is what sets it apart from other places. - It came with bbq beans and potato salad. I love their potato salad. I'd more likely continue to go to the Jack London location since there's a full bar, TV's and occasionally good music, but this is a good option of when I'm in the neighborhood.

What brought me in was the amazing smell. What will make me never go back again was the 1) Rudeness. They acted like i was waisting their time. I felt like they honestly did not want my business. 2) The menu was weak! 3) Portions were small, thrown onto a paper plate with tin foil, and the average sliced bread from the Safeway or something, c'mon. I had to finish my girl's plate just to stop feeling hungry. I have to admit though, the meat was pretty dam good though. But not worth going back to. I tried to talk a little with them, "what kind of bbq is this"? you know, talk bbq with me. Nope they ignored me. So never going back.

Great BBQ. Smaller than the Oakland joint of course, but still packs the same flavors. I don't know why I saw some reviews saying the people here aren't friendly. The staff has always been nice to me. Eat outside -- the weather's almost always nice enough.

This place is awesome. When ever I pass down to the bay I make a stop here. Beware when you get the hot BBQ sauce, the shit is actually hot but delicious. Good prices, good service and damn good food.

I love bbq. Especially bbq that tastes like bbq. The brick stoves speaks volumes and the friendly customer service keeps me coming back. I have had the chicken and ribs so far, both excellent. The potato salad is always on point and so are the beans. I tried the peach cobbler and it was ok. I will try it again to give it a second chance. Overall im thankful for this spot being so close to home.

Best damn ribs.... EVER. And the sauce here (spicy) demolishes all of the other Everett's spots in the bay. And the ribs here fall off the bone... They're perfectly tender. *drool* You can buy their sauce here, but they don't always have plastic containers, so just in case, bring your own jar. They hook it up!. And everyone that works here is super sweet. The ONLY thing I have qualms about but will not take away a star for is the fact that they only have two sides - beans and mashed potatoes. I seriously wish that they had sweet potatoes, collard greens, and mac n cheese... but I guess you can't have it all sometimes.

I am a fan of BBQ and Los Angles has the BEST, this not so much i also may have ordered the wrong thing, or everyone could have been tired and wanted to go home ( understandable it was 4th of July night) Hot link sandwich: was not a sandwich at all it was a chopped hot link with sauce (to rip me a new one - DONT ASK FOR SPICY ... THEIR SPICY IS CALLED 'DEATH TO TASTE BUDS') in the large space of a to-go container and bread on the side... -_- wtf is that! lol i was just sad! Hope you experience is better ! i would go back for the conversation with the people in line! too expensive to make my own sandwich!!

Order "to go" and keep the car running. Awesome ribs, brisket, links - - don't waste time on the sides. Reasonably priced but truly a "hole in the wall". Some of the best BBQ in the Bay Area.

Amazing place!! The food is some of the best BBQ I have ever had!! The yams and collard greens were fabulous! I would highly recommend this place if you are in London Square!!

I had pretty high expectations because of what I've heard. It wasn't even all that great. I ordered beef brisket dinner and the chicken dinner. Ok, for almost $27 I should be getting a decent amount of meat. It was a container with a couple pieces of fatty brisket smothered in sauce. The chicken was just over done. There was meh potato salad and meh beans... and I didn't even touch the slices of sandwich bread.. end pieces. I was pretty disappointed. However, the brisket was pretty good, I ate around the fat though and it would be better if there wasn't so much sauce. The brisket was the only thing from my order that was good.

I know, I know Why am I looking for barbecue in Berkeley, when Oakland is right next door. Well, because nowhere in Oakland has blown my socks off in any way. Then there's the fact that only Oakland can make parking in Berkeley look good. When I ordered my food with the hottest sauce, my server gave me a look and asked if I was sure. Having been eating really hot foods since I was a child, I was and am sure. I see why they warned. This sauce is as hot as anything I have had in the East Bay, bordering on painfully hot. But still flavorful, very flavorful. I may go down a notch next time, not because it wasn't delicious, but to not have to 'd battle' with my dinner. All the meats are tender and flavorful and the sauce is great at any temperature.. Sorry, but i have to cut this review short. Having described this place for a paragraph, I have to go eat there right now!

One of my favorite BBQ picks in the Bay Area although it's nothing but a small walk-in and order joint. Prices are so high I can only splurge once in a great while but I always realize how much I miss it when I do. I love their homemade potato salad and I generally order 2-3 extra scoops ($2/per extra scoop) because they don't give a very big portion. Their chicken sandwich is just under $9 and it never disappoints. Just enough so you're not hungry but still wishing you had more. The sauce is amazing. Sweet and tangy. The pork rib dinner is just under $14 and the ribs are meaty without being too fatty. I always get a sweet potato pie too for $4. Last time I bought a few extra meals for some out of state visitors to UCB. They were all very happy with Everett & Jones and it smelled so good they had to share with the entire office staff. I'm glad we have a Go To BBQ place in the Bay Area now that Flints has been closed longer than many of us can even remember.

No. Just..... No. Smoke and Brick Pig's House were closed (damn BBQ spots on Mondays), so I tried Everett & Jones. I got the pork ribs & beans (considering I'm not a huge fan of potato salad and beans were my only other option lol). In short, I can make better pork ribs than these. They were tough and chewy, not even a LITTLE bit tender... I was expecting meat to fall off of the bone, and was just so severely disappointed... Like, cry-in-your-beer disappointed. Potato salad was warm but tangy from too much relish. Beans were undercooked and just seemed like two different kinds of beans with some BBQ sauce mixed-in. So -- you charge me extra for crappy beans because you don't do substitutions, you don't have any other sides, and your BBQ sucks. They didn't have any brisket ready either, but judging by other reviews on here it probably would have been just as tough/chewy/sucky. For $14.22, I could have had a much better meal in a plethora of places. Sorry but I'ma stick to Smoke for my BBQ needs. Might have had 2 stars had it not been for the strange man selling random things outside that only crackheads would buy.

Wowzer! this place is the spot when it comes to barbeque. I was over at the Dollar Tree store next door on University Ave. and could smell barbeque ribs coming from the direction of a restaurant nearby and suddenly I found my mouth watering. I followed the aroma and it led me to Everett & Jones Barbeque. Ten minutes later I am biting into some savory barbeque ribs. Outdoor seating (+) Friendly Service (+) Unforgettable ribs (A+)

Dont break your neck coming to this place. There is way better BBQ out there.

  • Chelsea S.

I won't be coming back. The sauce and the beans are watered down, so theres not that much flavor. They give you a small amount of sides and the meat was not as tender as I remembered. Plus my drinks came to $21.04! Not worth it. I guess new management..... so sad.

No comparison, the best BBQ west of the Mississippi and I've been on the other side of the Mississippi. This place is the real thing. It feels like a southern smoke house when you go inside. Nothing fancy, the building is an old fast food restaurant but E.J. had been there for years. As we ordered the slab to go I was busy yelping & squarefouring(verb?) then I look up and place was full of smoke, the gal manning the pit was leaving the door open & seemed to enjoy letting the smoke fill the room. They have another location in Jack London Square. But I prefer this store. The slab is a generous portion enough for 4 people(haha, whom I kidding) ask for extra BBQ and if you dare try the hot but make sure to keep it as a side. Warning it is super spicy. Touring Top jazz musicians make E.J. A stop over. Even if you're not a musician this is a must stop over.

The BIGGEST RIP OFF in BBQ history. They charged $17 for the most fattiest few pieces of brisket w/ piece of chicken back and a drumstick. I hadn't been for quite some time and figured why not since someone else I knew had just went. Once I got my plate I was quickly reminded of why stop going and will not be back. NEVER go to this location spend a little bit extra money and go to the restaurant at Jack London. I usually don't write reviews but this was SO HORRIBLE I must put this in print. YELPERS BEWARE of the traditionalist's this trying to support this establishment. This is a waste of your money and time. You would be better served elsewhere!!!

  • ARIeL P.

This is by far my favorite out of all Everette and Jones. I always ask for the sauce on the side. I do this because I like to taste the smoke on their meats. This place will always have your fingers smelling lie smoke! You can see the smoke rings in their meats. I have brought many people from out of town and they all like this place. The meat is always falling off the bones and the Everett and Jones sauce is one of the best. The oldest sister who runs this place is always very nice and she'll tell you that her spot is the best out of all E&J! I agree.....

Classic, Bay Area location. When you think of BBQ in the bay area. E & J has to pop into your mind, not sure of any other BBQ place that has been established as long as E & J. I have eaten all the meats that they serve and all are great. But if i had to choose one. It definitely would be the sausage. Love homemade sausage with that sweet BBQ sauce that they make..SCRUMPTIOUS... Potato salad is ok, could be better. I'm not there for the sides, so i give it a pass. Parking is ok, you have the street along with the shopping stores parking lot. They also sell cakes and pies, Hit or Miss on those

I'm done put a fork in me! I've been a customer for years - I mean pre- Jack London days. Went here and it was a waste of money of nearly 40 dollars for two meals. Potatoe salad was like a maynaise soup. No beans or any substitute for the additional side on the dinner. Received the wrong sauce. Just Potatoe Salad and meat. The ribs were hard to chew - not done and fat with poor quality. They were out of chicken on a Saturday and no more slab of ribs. We have vowed not to come here again.

I've read all of the reviews and I am puzzled by most of them...to say the least. Especially the racist comment about having to be black to get served here....ummmm, don't know where to start on that one, but Everett and Jones has the most diverse customer base because HEY it is Berkeley and portion side is never going to be heaping at a BBQ spot. I have been coming here since I was a little girl. It was People's Choice, Flints, or Everett and Jones. The only one that still exist is Everett and Jones, so they must be doing something right. They have HANDS down the BEST sauce I have tasted outside of Memphis! That's fact.... Do they hit and miss with the food? Yes, but so does every place I have been, period. I look at it like this when I go to Starbucks, I know which Barista is going to make me a GREAT drink and I know which one is going to give me one I have to doctor on, it is what it is. I order the links when I go because they are great and the potato salad compliments them nicely with sauce. You're not going to find great Brisket in California. Sorry, don't look for it. Go to Texas or Memphis where there are places that specialize in that kind of cooking.

I love this place, I don't care what anyone says. This location is a bit divey, I prefer the location in Jack London Square, but they still have great BBQ. My favorites are the brisket and the ribs: you can never go wrong! Theres really no seating here, just a bar area and some picnic tables outside. And to add to the divey feel, its located next to a 99cent store and theres usually a guy outside trying to sell you bootleg cd's and dvds, but I can't hate on his hustle. I just love the BBQ too much lol. This isn't a gourmet place, it's comfort food. Yes, you get two slices of bread with your order, nothing fancy... it's a bbq shack, what did you expect?! Great place to grab lunch or a late night snack. Bring CASH! No cards accepted.

Was I eating chicken jerkey smothered in BBQ sauce? I think I sat there chewing for around 2 or 3 minutes before I could feel safe swallowing my bite of "BBQ chicken" without lacerating my throat. This place is not very good at all, and I wont be back. I'm not really sure what happened but everything here lately has been completely dried out. Head down to KCs on San Pablo they still have some great BBQ. (For California anyways)

Never again. Just writing this review is making my heart beat faster. I was treated very disrespectfully by one of the employees while the others watched. Employee argued loudly over hot sauce when my 11 year old son wanted to switch from hot to mild. Unbelievable especially considering I paid $40 for three small lunches and he's insisting I pay him a dollar for a small side of sauce that cost them less than a nickel. The employee became very aggressive and we ended up leaving scared in a sketchy neighborhood with our food in our hands. This is the first negative review I've ever written but I don't know what else to do being that the owners will not return my calls or emails. My sons commented that was the dirtiest place they have ever eaten. I have had much better experiences at the Jack London Square location under different ownership, who did answer my call and offered to buy us lunch even though they are unaffiliated. That employee and the elusive owners have absolutely lost my families business. I won't bother to take more time to write how mediocre the food really was or that the health inspector needs to pay a visit...

This WAS my most favorite childhood place to go to get BBQ ribs until they opened up another one that has the dine in experience which is even better! (located in Jack London, Oakland) Their BBQ sauce is so unique! My family and I would always take it to go because the joint was not made to sit in! The exterior of this place would have been overlooked by a non-local person because of the restaurant's lack of flashy and modern decor! I believe it's a hole in the wall kind of restaurant! To entertain myself while waiting in line and for my order to come out, I would read their funny, cunning bumper stickers all covered on their walls! I remember that it would take about half an hour to get the order out and that there was often a line during the evenings for takeouts!

Pretty Decent BBQ! Their BBQ sauce is spot on, and the meat is well cooked and marinated. The guys here are super nice too (let us order and eat in although the place was closing, joked around with us). My only gripe about this place is the portions and the sides. We had two small slices of bread as our side, with a small side of potato salad too. Definitely would be a lot better with two quality pieces of bread instead of flimsy bread I can find at safeway. Overall the BBQ here is pretty damn good, as well as their potato salad. Really nice guys and good service, and this place (as seen from the walls) has a lot of interesting history. Definitely worth to check it out when in Berkeley!

I hate to say it cause the first time I had it that brisket was the real deal, 5 star stuff. 6 visits later and sadly, it had never come close. The chicken is always on point though and that's what I'll be getting if I ever return. You just can't cook brisket at such a high temperature. I had to toss out 9/10ths of the meat visit after visit. Thank goodness I got a combo plate. I can tell they have been rushing the cook on it the brisket, or at least don't control their heat spikes in their pit and that cut goes to tough-ville after that. It's just not slow and low enough ya'll. Not tender no matter how long you leave it once you raise the temp too fast.. Chicken is more forgiving with temperature and boy its SLAMMIN yummy. I think the best in the area. If E&J brings their brisket up to snuff with consistency, I'll change my rating for sure.

Ghetto BBQ at gourmet prices. You can tell when a bbq's offerings are mediocre when they serve their brisket swimming in sauce, accompanied by one slice of wonder bread. I guess this is acceptable for those who grew up around here, but for a Texan, this is gas station slop. For real BBQ head down the road to perdition or hit up Lucky at BBQ hut.

Sadly, a recent visit has confirmed that the meat simply is not what it used to be, BUT, the server at the counter was incredibly friendly. It was the first time that someone actually smiled at me! Amazing!

This is the real deal! E&J does not mess around when it comes to barbecue! You can spot the smoke coming out of this little eatery as you drive down San Pablo and the smell is intoxicating! I love the interior, with hilarious bumper stickers and attitude signs - so funny and distracting if there's a bit of a line. Dude was pulling the meat out of the fire, chopping it up with a cleaver and serving it up within minutes. It can't get any fresher than that! And I loved that the woman behind the counter called me darling and said "thank you sweetie." Don't forget to tip and you will also feel the love! Now, the food review! I had the Beef Links Dinner with mild sauce ($10.80) which came with a huge portion of hot links, a scoop of potato salad and 2 slices of wheat bread. At first I thought, how can I finish this.... but who am I kidding, it went down easy. The links were deliciously smokey and saucy, and I made a mini sandwich with the bread to soak up the sauce. I also really liked the potato salad and wished there was more of it! Tom had the Pork Ribs Dinner, also with mild sauce ($10.55) with an equally huge portion of ribs that were savory and satisfying. Such a great place, with an eclectic crowd of customers, quirky ambiance and outstanding barbecue! (bonus = sodas are only a buck!)

West coast BBQ at its best. Get a slab and a bib and go for broke. Sweet smokey sauce. Better than the Jack London (or other ) location(s).

Not gonna lie. I was drunk when I ate here, but from my drunken memories I remembered delicious sauce with fall off the bone ribs and brisket. The service staff is friendly and this place just hits the spot after you head out after drinks from the Albatross across the street.

Look and I shall find a decent BBQ joint to taste the flavors of smokey goodness. Me and my boyfriend came yesterday for a late lunch. When you walk in there is very little space, but that is because majority of the time people take the food to go. There is diner booth seating facing the window but it also runs into the area where you order and wait for your food. My boyfriend and I ordered the Pork Ribs (meal) and Pork Ribs (sandwich) with a side order of beans. We saw the guy bagging up two orders to-go and went up to the counter to ask if it was our # and he just grunted 'yes' and gave a nod. I guess we were really hungry because after we settled down to eat our food at the Berkeley Marina we were diving into two of the Pork Ribs (meal) and no beans whatsoever. It took us all the way to midnight to realize we may have took the couple behind us meal. However, we both enjoyed the sultry taste of the ribs, the mashed potatoes that compliment the sauce, and the two slices of wheat bread, which we didn't really eat because we were feeding the squirrels and birds at the park with it. I would like to come here again, definitely try to get the right order this time.

I don't mean to be mean or anything, but it would be GREAT if they wore gloves when hand-shredding the meat. God knows where else those hands have been, and I certainly don't want to be eating anyone else's DNA. Their food is really good though and the smoking wood smells sooooooo damn good from blocks away. We ordered bbq chicken and it was just soo good. I will come back, but only when they've made that little change.

  • Mike D.

The place has very good BBQ, the ribs, links, brisket and chicken all are delicious. The one thing that does it for me is the potato salad, damn it extremely good with their spicy sauce! Some people would complain about the dryness of the meat and poultry products, but what do you expect just look at the outside of this place, it's a smoke house! The only thing I don't like is that they do not accept credit cards! but on the plus side, you can pick up some questionable and interesting stuff outside.

  • Greg K.

OK, I am a Loooong time BBQ lover and Flints was always my favorite. Alas, I have to find other places to eat now as they have been long gone. E&J's reminds me most of their flavor and I keep giving them chances, but each time I go, the posrtions get smaller and smaller! I buy a dinner portion now and it looks like a sandwich! Spending $15 on food and still going away hungry? having to supplement it with my own extra bread? What a joke! And to to pit off, the last TWO times I went there, I PAID for extra potato salad and because the staff don't give a F*** about anything, they forgot it. NEVER AGAIN! Moving on to places that actually care about their business. SMOKE BBQ down the street is now my go to place.

This is a good place to go for a great deal on BBQ. The food is juicy and the mild sauce has hints of onion, carrot and sugar. In Berkeley, this is one place where you go for ribs. Don't be upset by the lack of parking or the 99 cent store next door. Enjoy the rastafarian outside selling pro dolphin freedom bumper stickers or whatever incense is in fashion that week.

I have had food from here about 10 times. My favorite bar is nearby making this easy beer food. I will not return. In order to eat here, you MUST be black. Otherwise expect them to go out of their way to give you the smallest portion with as much fat as they can find. The irony is my namesake and family line is rooted in fighting to abolish slavery and racism. I don't live here but when I visit the fact racism exists blows me away. It seems to be alive and well at Everett and Jones. As for the food, it's OK BBQ. It often seems overcooked.

this is the second time we have been here. the mild sause is pretty spicy for me . I'm not a spicy eater. their ribs were really good and a good amount of meat these are for the dinners . my husband had the beef link dinner he said it was ok. but the rib slab seemed kind of high $39 dollars a slab .which we did not get.

Stopping here on Sat night (10/06/12) was just a mistake. We were actually stopping to check our phone, LoL. Of course sitting in the car with that smell just sneaking through the window crack we had no choice but to get something. So the BF got us both a chicken dinner plate and we headed home. This was my very first time consuming some E & J's. That chicken was off the hook, and the sauce (I don't really like BBQ sauce that much) was even better. I enhaled it so fast I didn't even get a pic of it, LOL. Guess the BF has to take me back ASAP.

Just left this restaurant and the service was horrible! The gentleman on the phone told me that I could not place an order because they were not taking phone orders. When I arrived they Took my order without making eye contract, as if serving me was a chore they'd rather not have to deal with. After forty five minutes I noticed numbers were being called after mines. When I asked if I missed my number bring called, they seemed annoyed and did not want to admit they made the mistake. They rudely asked what was my order, and when I asked if their mistake meant they were just beginning to make my order, the man scoffed '' I guess so!'' eye contract, as if serving me was a chore they'd rather not have to deal with. They did not have a problem discussing how long they had been working for this restaurant, and how bad they wanted to quit or retire.Nor did they have a problem saying Everett and Jones wouldn't be successful in San Francisco. After forty five minutes I noticed numbers were being called after mines. When I asked if I missed my number bring called, they seemed annoyed and did not want to admit they made the mistake. The whole experience was so unprofessional I simply asked for my money back. In the past I frequented this establishment regularly, clearly they do not appreciate the opportunity to serve their community.

I love this place! My friend turned me on to it! Food is simple, delicious comfort BBQ! Would go back anytime. My only two wishes that would make it better. If they took credit cards, and if they had a bathroom, or at least a sink to was your hands after messy, tasty BBQ.

I was frantically fumbling in my pocket for my phone. It's the number you always dread dialing, but it's been about six minutes since my long time friend stopped breathing and I was really worried. I pressed "9". He didn't look up. I then pressed "1". He didn't take a breath; all this time his head was buried. Before I pressed the final "1", I talked to him to see if he was ok. Then he magically looked up and opened his mouth. "Why you still talking?" He's right. Why was I still talking when I had laid out in front of me the most delicious rack of ribs known to mankind? The pit master hand picked a succulent fall off the bone rack for us, slathered it with smack yo mama down sauce, and served it up with a couple scoops of potato salad and wheat bread. Sweet potato pie was a nice finish to our meal. I stopped talking and started indulging. Just don't call 911 if you see me not breathing.

I have travelled near and far. My father is from Tennessee and my mother is from Mississippi and I know BBQ. I am shocked by the stars on Yelp because this place hands down has the best greasy smoked ribs and brisket I have been able to find on the West Coast. I wasn't too crazy about the chicken but the ribs trump and rival some southern ribs shacks. I cannot speak for anything else on the menu. If you want real deal for bbq I highly recommend this place.

If you're reading this, you probably already are looking for BBQ places on yelp so I'll make this short. BBQ Pork Ribs: A+; the perfect amount of seasoning, their signature bbq sauce, a hint of spicy (i got medium), and hours of slow cooking goodness. The meat falls right off the bone. BBQ Links: A; these are home made links, so they are tons meatier and more well textured than pre-processed links. The flavor on these links is amazing! Just enough sweetness. Potato Salad: A; very solid southern style potato salad, just hate that they only give you one scoop! Brisket and chicken tasted solid as well when i tried it! They also inclde two slices of wheat toast with every order that isn't really spectacular (i think its wonderbread). It tastes extra good if you dip your bread in all that leftover bbq goodness. Knock down one star because the people working always seem so pissed off. Knock down another star because the BBQ is slightly salty. The flavor is great, but the salt was really overpowering. Knock down half a star becuase it is pretty expensive for what you get. It was almost 20 dollars for two items! Round up, and this place is a solid 3.

Cool ambiance with friendly employees with the vibe of a place that's been around a long time and knows what they are doing. But, you would be mistaken. Ribs were loaded with fat, very greasy and seemed like every rib was the weird end piece. Brisket was somewhat tough and didn't taste like it had been slow cooked for a long time. Chicken was tender, but there was little flavor in the meat. Flavor was only on the skin and mostly just ran off because the sauce was so watery. Sauce was bland and the medium spicy had little spice to it at all. Side of potato salad had a lot of vinegar in it and large under-cooked potato chunks. Wait to get food was incredibly long. Went on Memorial Day since every other Oakland BBQ joint after the A's game was closed because it was Monday. Disappointing...was looking for some good quality Oakland BBQ. We'll try elsewhere.

To Paul D. 62 and white...that fits my demographics too and I have been going there for over 25 years...to be fair I NEVER got the treatment you said you did, nor do I know anybody or have I seen anybody not welcome here...black, white, brown, red or any other color...your opinion but please tone it down a little. This is Berkeley after all....

I'm so addicted to this stuff. Pork ribs and potato salad with bread costs $10, but the ribs are super meaty and good god they are just the best damn thing in west berkeley. If you wanna give someone out of town a taste of black american barbecue, bring them here. It won't disappoint. BTW, this is pretty much a take out joint, not really a sit down restaurant.

The best BBQ in the east bay to me. Can be kind of pricey. I dont think any BBQ place is better. From my experiences only go to the one on San Pablo. You may not like the neighborhood or area, but the San Pablo location has never dissappointed me.

Somewhat disappointing food here. If you're looking for BBQ in Berkeley, going to Smokey J's in south Berkeley is a better option. Better food, bigger portions, and great sides.

Early on a Saturday evening four of us met to do a comparison of three BBQ places (Everett & Jones, Smoke, and KC BBQ) on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, less than a mile apart. We wanted to keep our orders at each place as identical as possible so we'd be comparing 'apples to apples.' Here's our summary of E&J: ****************** This location is very small. Inside is only the kitchen and order counter; outside are steel picnic tables. Otherwise, it's take-out only. This is not a full restaurant like the E&J in Jack London Square. This particular corner of University and San Pablo remains a well-lit but sketchy neighborhood at night. E&J had the same type of combo platter that KC did, so we were able to do a more direct comparison. However, it cost more and we got a bit less - not that we needed more, racking up three shared meals! Still, it's something to note. It was firmly in the middle for pricing. The medium-hot BBQ sauce isn't very hot at all at E&J. It's a nice fruity sauce, deservedly popular. You can now buy it at most supermarkets in the Bay Area. The ribs are definitely not traditional BBQ. They're strangely pink inside, and the juiciness seems to come from brining. With the salt, sugar and smoke, each one tasted, as my spouse exclaimed, "just like ham on a stick!" The sausage was terrible. Too lean, it had a crumbly texture inside the casing and lacked good flavor or interesting spicing. The brisket was even worse: someone had sliced it with the grain instead of against the grain, ensuring it had rubbery-chewiness even though it was reasonably juicy with a nice little fat cap (this was the desirable point cut). The sides were awful, the worst of the evening. The potato salad and the baked beans were seasoned with....pickle relish! Sweet pickle relish, no less. I haven't encountered this version of potato salad in a very long time, and hopefully it will be an equally long time before I meet up with it again. But in baked beans?? That was entirely new, and wholly unwelcome to all of us. Summary: The staff was very friendly, and the interior is kitschy fun with smart-aleck bumper stickers pasted all over the inside. But eating outside with roaring traffic and the loud salespitch of someone selling pirate DVDs right outside E&J's front door on the first picnic table, was a lot less than charming. It would take really good food of any kind to overcome those surroundings, and E&J isn't up to the task. Their sauce is so tasty it hides a lot of sins, and they certainly have fans who believe their BBQ is great stuff. I honestly think if they had sliced that brisket properly, it would have been a winner for the evening...but they didn't. C'est la vie! Of what we tried at E&J, two people liked the "ham on a stick"...er, pork ribs. One liked the fattiness of the brisket even though it was chewy. The sauce had the most promise, but nothing else rated a return visit. That sausage link is a no-go, sauce or no sauce.

not your five star restaurant so don't go in expecting that kind of service. The food is good and the sense of humor is plenty. That's what it's all about... enjoy!

The first time I walked into this place, it was like that scene in Animal House where the Delta Tau Chi guys roll into that club to see Otis Day sing Shama Lama Ding Dong. Heads turned and did a double take. Fortunately, no one asked if they could dance with our dates. The food comes on a dixie plate with a slice of regular grocery store bread. When you order it, the server will ask do you want mild or hot, and they will ask you again if you don't look like you can handle it. If you order hot, make sure to get an extra can of the purple or orange drank, cause you'll need it. I had a two way, with the brisket and ribs. Hot. I figured ahhh what the heck, it can't be that hot...famous last words. I had just finished eating my first rib and started into the second when my nose started running and my forehead got mad flushed. I started wiping my forehead with the little dollar store napkin that I had. I killed a can of orange soda, then slammed the slice of bread. To no avail, my head started sweating and it looked like I had just stepped out of the shower. I used to work on the same block as Everett and Jones. There's no mistaking the jaw dropping smell of the hard wood smoke as you come up San Pablo Ave or University and get closer to the store. But, honestly, the food itself cannot live up to the expectations that build up in your head after smelling it in the air. The food is good, not great. If you're a wuss like me, don't get the hot. You can't hang. This location is straight up utilitarian, so don't expect the table service or nice location that you get in Jack London. But it is a bit better than the bulletproof plexi that you have to order through in Hayward.

The ribs are tasty, for sure. Of course, that's all I've had on the many occasions I've stopped by, so that's all I know. Compared to the other rib joints I've been to, it's up there with the the tastiest. Take some in to the Albatross across the way and you'll make friends in no time.

FOOD IS SUPERB.... But.... parking is stressful. price kinda of high for the presentation. they give you a slice of cheap wheat bread with your food which i found odd. If you want Everett and Jones pay the little extra and go sit down and enjoy a meal at their Jack Location location Best restaurant bbq though, and their consistent from location to location.

The place is a hole in the wall (Literally). Poor ventilation because the smoke was killing me while I waited for my order. They do not take credit cards? Really? The 60's called and they want their business model back. On top of not taking credit cards, they did not have the proper change to break my twenty. Ok, on to the food..... Not good. The ribs were cold and rubbery and the potato salad was warm. I ran across this location while on a business trip and was not impressed.

My friend took me here for my birthday. It was definitely good Q. The guy behind the corner warned me when I said I wanted the spicy sauce for my ribs and chicken. He was right, they are not joking when they say spicy. My nose started sweating. It hurt soooo good though. The place used bread you'd find at your local discount supermarket proudly displayed on the counter. The place had your local hole in the wall feel, and a few places to sit inside and out. I had mad sauce all over me, and my friend had to get us more napkins. I'd eat here again.

We have had a tradition for three years. Every 4th of July, we come here to get barbeque to go for dinner after having barbeque all day. The flavor of the food is really strong, sweet and smokey. I find it kind of cool that they add a slice of wheat bread to the meal. The service isn't great though. The people working here aren't friendly.

  • Sleepy Fingers J.

Yup, they get it right here, right down to the Wonder bread! I can't pick a favorite, it's all good here. Well, I guess the sausage is my fave. Very reasonable, too.

The thing I can't stand about barbecue places is they think you will love their secret recipe if they douse the meat in b-bcue sauce. The meat was fall off the bone good but let me put my sauce on it. For a barbecue place the menu doesn't have many choices. Everyone seemed nice and no problem with service. BIG PROBLEM WHEN I SEE KITCHEN HELP USE BATHROOM AND WALK OUT W/OUT WASHING THOUGH! That probably has turned me off this place.

This is what I think of when BBQ comes up. A small counter in an old building with the smell of smoke, sauce and meats permeating the place. I've been wanting to try here for a long time so I over ordered. Three meat combo with smoked sausage, pork ribs, and brisket. It came with bread and potato salad. I ordered the hot sauce, and the nice lady working the counter asked if I'd had the hot before. Since I hadn't she recommended I get medium and get the hot on the side (she said it was the way she does it). Good call, the medium was hot enough but nicely sweet. I added a little bit of the hot sauce here and there, but the medium was fine. It was a beautiful day so I sat outside with some co-workers. The ribs had great flavor and a little bit of chew. The house made beef sausage was outstanding. The potato salad was average. The problem was with the brisket. It was CHEWY as can be. I couldn't cut it with the plastic knife. I couldn't bit through it. It went uneaten. All in all a good place except for the brisket (unless someone tells me this is abnormal I'll avoid) and I'll come back to either ribs for sausage.

I had a craving for BBQ, and I've tried KC down the street and decided to give this place a try. FOOD: I ordered the two way combo (pork ribs, beef links, potato salad and bread for ~$19) with the hot bbq sauce on the side. First, the ribs were very, Very dry but had a good smokey taste (I like to get the sauce on the side so I can actually taste the meat). I love spicy food, but I made a big mistake getting the hot bbq sauce because it was all heat and very little flavor. Other yelpers have praised their bbq sauce, so maybe the medium or mild are very good. The positives were the links and the potato salad. the potato salad was fresh and a great contrast to the meal. The links were soft and had lots of flavor. It was a good amount of food, I was definitely full, but it was a bit too expensive for what it was. SERVICE: The service wasn't really bad, but it was just cold. The guy was far from friendly and didn't say much. Also, why have a phone number if you don't take phone orders? It didn't end up mattering because it only took about 5 minutes for me to get my food (it was all pre-made and just sitting there - probably why it was so dry). Finally, since I got the sauce on the side, all I got was a little 3 oz cup of sauce. I asked for extra and it was $1 for another little 3oz cup. The service was a big reason for my low rating. If you can do it, you should probably go to the Jack London Square location instead of this one. They actually have other sides you can choose from and I heard the food and service is better. If i go to E&J again it'll be there, definitely not to this location again.

I have been there frequently a number of years ago and always loved it. I went back last week and the brisket was at least half fat. It was the same for my friend. Ending up with a glob of fat in your mouth is disgusting even with a delicious bbq sauce. I will not be back.

Getting my taste buds ready for the annual Reno Rib Cook-off trip, I wanted to reacquaint myself with one of my favorite BBQ sauces (sold at select stores, but made fresh here). And since Doug's and Flint's are closed, where else can I take a Q-lovin' cousin driving through the East Bay? Love the simplicity of this place. With the serious BBQ pit and the aromas of smoke, along with their basic potato salad and slices of plain wheat bread...It's ALL about the BBQ here. Chicken was done right and tender, but their ribs were a bit on the dry and tough side. Thanks to their medium sauce, I was able to put up a good fight with the bones I had. And being hungry helped too. With the right amount of fat, smoked flavor and texture, the winner here was their beef brisket. Hands down.

  • Terry T.

There is nothing like tasty house-made links, and E&J does a good job on theirs. They are one of the few places around that make their own. I usually have the medium sauce, as I know longer have a desire to showoff by eating things that numb my taste buds for hours. S says the beef is generally good and he likes to order the sauce hot and then tell me I have become a hot sauce wuss.

This is a review for the brisket and not the ribs. The brisket was drenched in sauce and I could hardly taste the meat and it was cut too thin for me to get a since of the quality. Kind of chewy sometimes and hardly tender. It was served in a pool of sauce that negated any smokey flavor that may have come from the cooking process. Maybe their ribs are better but this place is pretty mediocre in terms of brisket. Really not that great. Not horrible but for 10+ dollars, some cheap wheat bread, and lame potato salad? Not worth it at all. Lower it to $7 and I'll go again. Stay away from the brisket.

"Gristle and Sinew" Our family got 2 rib plates tonight and one was gross beyond description. All fat, bone nubs and nastiness. It breaks my heart to throw food away, but after a few bites we ended up tossing 80% of our $30 meal. Sad.

Incredible local color, Great service, a constant stream of patrons, a simple menu. Stiff prices and OK BBQ. I expect my brisket to be a lot tenderer. Just good not great, sorry guys.

Been coming here since the 70's. A favorite for after hours barbecue. Stopped by on a beautiful Saturday for a Valentine's lunch. How could it go wrong? The brisket has always been a tender spicy treat. Not so today. Impossible to chew through even one piece!!!!! Ate some of the hot link from my husband's plate, but had to toss mine. So disappointed. Not going back any time soon. We'll be at KC's down the block. And by the way, beware: if you order 'spicy' one day you might get Hell's fire the next. Not consistent.

This review is super over do. I remember I think her name was Mary and I came in one Thursday sick. Sick sick. ,I didn't have any cash money and the prospect of walking across the street to wells fargo was monumental. . She looked at me , with mercy and kindness gave me the food and told me to pay her later. I came back next week. I have never forgotten to pay it forward. The best BBQ. In the Bay

I got hooked on this place early in my college days when the trek down University to San Pablo was not stopping me from enjoying its deliciousness and when I moved to SF afterwards I thought I'd found a very good alternative in Big Nate's. Now that that place has been replaced with some hipster pretender I have been lost in a sea of terrible SF barbeque, but E&J's food is definitely great enough to warrant a trip across the bay (which you know San Franciscans don't like doing). Wish they'd open up an SF location, but until then I'll keep my Clipper loaded and ready for any impromptu BART trips. A couple notes: As mentioned by other reviewers their Hot sauce is indeed true to its name, approach with caution. Also, if you're the type of person that needs your hand held through the ordering process, white tablecloths, and the word "artisanal" to be featured prominently on the menu this is clearly not the place for you. You can see that just by looking at the place so there's no need to give it a bad review when there are many hipster restaurants trying to make bbq in the area that will be better able to cater to you delicate sensibilities.

  • Chris G.

Don't come here. It's run by clueless people. They don't even have 80% of what's on the real menu. I was told I need to goto the one in Oakland for most of the things I wanted. I rarely write reviews but it was just a major let down. They couldn't even get the correct sauce I asked (medium vs mild). Food is so much better at the Oakland location. Don't waste your time, someone should really shut this place down or fire the manager.

  • Alberto R.

Food is generally very good. The ribs and chicken are consistently on-point. As a spicy food lover, I really appreciate having the option to get a sauce that really makes you sweat. However like others have said, the brisket can be hit or miss. The prices have just gotten too high for me to come back regularly though. A one-meat plate with potato salad and bread will run about $9-10, and usually isn't enough to satisfy me. Then I'm left with the option of 2 meats for $17, or 3 meats for $20. I feel the 2 meats is bad value, and then I end up spending 20 bucks! Great food, but hard to justify the price.

I used to come by this place all the time back when I was in high school, I remember it being the best BBQ spot in the bay area. Decided to stop in today and splurge for nostalgias sake. Huge disappointment! Half my plate of brisket was so gristly I couldn't stab it with a fork, let alone chew it into a swallowable consistency. I would have complained, but the whole vibe of the place just screams "fuck everyone"* and an argument would have really ruined my day... and I'm not trying to be a prude about that, I love me some trashy dive-bar aesthetics. But it works waaaay better when you serve amazing food, then it's like a charming little local secret hole-in-the-wall place with character. But when a place looks trashy, and then you go drop $20 on a dinner that's downright inedible, you just think to yourself: "If someone asked 'what did you expect?' right now, I would have nothing to say for myself." I don't know how long this place has been terrible, it's entirely possible that they've got a whole new staff of folks who never set foot inside Everett & Jones 10 years ago, they don't know it can be so much better.

1/2 hour after eating the ribs, I can still taste the smokiness on my lips. Delish!! If anyone has had former smokey Big Nates BBQ in the City, the blessing has been transferred to this eatery. The ribs were beautifully caramelized with that mahogany chewy exterior like carnitas and underneath was this unctuous pork not quite falling off the bone in a good way. I dislke disinegrating ribs. I got the whole slab which comes to about 3 huge, generous man size plate fulls. The portion could easily feed 4-6 people depending on how much of a hog you are. Could feed 2 grown men until they fell into a blissful, bloated, farting coma. Sides are irrelevant since I go for the smoked meat. You do get a pint of rustic, creamy potato salad that is tasty with a slight, sweet pickly flavor. You also get 1/2 a pint of baked beans which are sweet, tangy tasty. Also with the whole slab you get 9 slices of whole wheat bread. You can order the slab dry with sauce on the side. I prefer to sauce myself the just right amount of glaze. Again, I compare this place to the former Big Nates in the City because they are generous, the meat is smokey, the sides are tasty just like the days of Nates. The staff is very friendly. This place reminds me of a hamburger stand from old days with stools and window counter inside, covered open air patio in front with picnic tables. Not the Taj Majal, but who cares? Yum BBQ at last. I can now rest from my quest for amazing BBQ. Attire - very casual. Price - since when is great bbq cheap?

I am so sad. This was my joint for years and years. I always stuck up for it as the best bbq in the bay (the Berkeley location, not the Jack London spot). When a friend told me I was crazy and that E and Js wasn't that great, I decided to bring them in to show them how wrong they were, and that their past experience was a fluke. After we ate, it their feelings were confirmed: E and Js is mediocre. I had no leg to stand on. The ribs were tough, bland and fatty, the links And chicken were dried out. I thought it was just them having a bad day, so went back a few weeks later. Nope, same exact dang thing. I will probably try again, but that's probably wishful thinking. It is simply just too hit or miss to risk spending your money on.

Well the food is good but the service was horrible!!! My boyfriend and I ordered catering for a family event. The order should've been $550 but in the end they tried to charge $724 for the amount with no explanation that Imani placed the order wrong and didn't charge for one pan of chicken. It was a mistake on their part and wanted the customer to pay for the mistake. The balance was paid by the phone and was never told that there was a difference in the original quote. Customer service is everything and I'll choose to spend my money elsewhere! Shady business is not good business...

Three of us had dinner at Everett & Jones this evening. It took an hour to drive there because of heavy traffic on the Bay Bridge, but it was worth the commute. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table but again it was worth the wait. Two of us had the BBQ chicken while another had the rib and link dinner. It was wonderfully delicious. My chicken was juicy and the medium sauce was just right for me. I also liked my side dishes of baked beans, which had a nice molasses flavor, and potato salad, which cleaned my palate between bites. The lemonade was also great. The wait staff was great, refilling our glasses and making sure we were happy. This is great BBQ even if the price was between $12 and $19 for each entree. I just wish there was an outlet in San Francisco!

Brisket is on point. I mean I should get this meal everyday but my budget would haunt me forever. The sauce is really good, I mean I couldn't believe for a while. The bark on the brisket is really good too.

  • Rebecca H.

Is the bbq sauce tangy, sweet, and finger-licking good aka everything that a good barbeque sauce should be? Yes. Do you come out of this place smelling like you've become a chimney sweep? Hell, ya. Would you come here again? Yes! Everett & Jones is a Bay Area institution and while it may not be the best bbq in the area, you have to try it at least once! Get the chicken or the pork ribs, but skip the brisket. If you're craving dessert, the peach cobbler is definitely worth it. The sweet potato pie? Just ok.

Very good!!! Tried it for the first time, and I think I will def. go back for more. Got the four way combo with briskets, links, ribs, and chicken. Got the medium spicy. Meats were overall very tender and flavorful! Chicken and ribs were my favorite. Links were pretty spicy and they get addicting! Also love the potato salad on the side. Shared between two girls and with bowls of rice, it was a very satisfying and filling meal. Oh, it's a bit pricey but I think the portion is also pretty big, so no complaint.

This is the only good Jones bbq. The rest I've had were not as good. They have many locations and the Berkeley one is the only one I go to. I uses to love the Jack London location but the past few times I've been it hasn't been good. Ribs were over cooked and dry potato salad had to much skin in it and no mustard to much mayonnaise. And the brisket was chewy...there sauce is always good though and there links.

I love Everett and Jones. I get the chicken dinner and it's always cooked perfect. The medium bbq sauce is the perfect mix between spice and bbq flavor. The potato salad is perfect and always more chunky not too mushy. The beans are always delicious as well. Service is friendly and fast. Never not enjoyed my meal at Everett's. My husband gets the rib dinner and says they are one of his favorite ribs. He also gets the hot bbq sauce and it's actually hot which he has a hard time finding. And I'm partial to this location but that's just my personal preference. Can't go wrong with Everette's

The joint is g-h-e-t-t-o. The way I like my bbq joints. I walk into the small restaurant that consists of a counter and is filled with smoke and men wearing do-rags. I feel right at home. Growing up in the Dirty South, I love bbq. I ask what kind of barbecue they would categorized themselves as... I hear "Mississippi." Good answer. I order the 3 meat combo and choose, baby back ribs, links, and brisket. I omit the chicken as I am not a big fan of bbq chicken. Everything was good but what stood out far beyond the rest was the brisket. It was fall-apart-as-you-attempt-to-pick-up tender and juicy. They doused my entire meal with the medium spiciness bbq sauce and I was completely satisfied. I will be back. With a gas mask. To protect my lungs from the smoke. For more brisket. FYI, Yelp says they dont take credit cards, but they swiped mine just fine.

I drove past this place a million times and I've always been curious since the smell is so good. I finally decided to go in yesterday and I ordered the brisket sandwich. I hate to be so negative but it was awful! tough as leather, lots of fat, i couldn't even chew large parts of it. It came with two slices of cheap bread and some mediocre potato salad. Since i ordered a sandwich i expected to get a sandwich, and on a decent bread, especially since it costs $9 something.. This was honestly the worst brisket I've ever had. on the plus side, i'm sure the chicken and hot dogs are better since they are much harder to screw up. They should also work on the cleanliness of the place. It looks very dirty.

I went to the Berkeley location with my family and we all ended up with food poisoning. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The service is bad and so is the food. I would have gave them 0 stars if it would have allowed me to.

  • Ric M.

Ribs are very very good. Links are crumbly and not a lot of flavor. Brisket is decent. Again, the ribs are very very good! Beans are good, but potato salad is weird. I do have a problem with this place. I have usually been there after a long day when I am pretty exhausted. There's a gentleman there behind the counter who seems to always be chopping something. The problem is every time he swings the knife it's like a dang gunshot. BAM! BAM! BAM!!! Gets very annoying. So I'd say.....get the ribs and some brisket to go and you got yourself a winner there!

I feel as though E&Js in general is extremely hit and miss, regardless of the location. Came to this one on Friday around 8. Ordered chicken and brisket. Food came out fast and the guy who took our order was nice. Chicken was dry to the point of being hard. Brisket was so chewy I almost chocked on it because I couldn't chew it enough. It was the first time I have ever returned food in my life. Felt bad. Guy was very nice and apologetic. Returned my money and offered to make up for it if I returned. Don't think I will though. Last time I went to the MacArthur location I was very satisified.

Best BBQ I have ever had. Mind blown. I live in Texas, we have some good BBQ down here but nothing that compares to this.

I was driving down University Avenue in Berkeley when I heard that familiar roar - my stomach. "I'm empty, Eat now." Isn't there an Everett and Jones just ahead??? I quickly parked, ran through traffic and made my way to San Pablo Avenue. After brushing past some guy selling candles and another guy mumbling something, my nose picked up the smokey aroma and I floated into the restaurant. My eyes darted across the menu - wasting valuable time - because I knew what I wanted. I uttered those three sweet words -- BBQ rib sandwich. Then I noticed that this E&J isn't as fancy and upscale like its sister site at Oakland's Jack London Square but I got my order in record time and I was outtta there. Once home, I couldn't open that plastic container fast enough. I tore open the bag of white bread, grabbed a rib and began eating, still standing in the kitchen. OMG!!! Fall-off-the-bone goodness!!! Generous portions of meat!!! Thick, flavorful sauce!!! I sampled the potato salad and my tummy sighed - "Whoa, this ROCKS Too!!!" I've got to listen to my gut more often.
