Best Fajitas EVER!!! Service was friendly and fast. The veggies in the fajitas were crunchy and fresh. We had the chicken and beef mix, will make this a definite stop when on town!

I feel bad giving it a poor review, but I have to be honest that if you are looking for authentic Mexican flavor, then this is not the place. Taste is more like Tex-Mex (americanized). Chips and salsa are good, but that is about it. I've tried the albondigas (meatball soup), tortilla soup, enchiladas, folded taco, and rolled taco. First of all, the albondigas soup only had ONE meatball. The meatballs are the main ingredient in this soup and there was only one. The vegetables looked fresh, but the broth tasted like it was out of a can. The tortilla soup was my least favorite. As soon as I tasted it, I knew the flavor of the rest of the dishes would be mediocre. It had been years since my family had visited this restaurant and now I remember why.

Possibly the worst service in Yuma. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted with a seat yourself by a harried cashier. After wandering among several dirty tables we found a place and were fairly promptly asked for our drink choice. Water was brought along with a basket to broken tortilla chips and some excellent salsa. It was difficult to eat the salsa on the tiny pieces of chips however. Our waitress finally came to take our order. An excellent tortilla soup was delivered promptly but no napkins or table service. Our food came after quite a wait and we had to ask for napkins and tables service. The Chili Verde burrito and taco my husband ordered were excellent. My chicken enchilada was cold dry diced chicken with a bit of green sauce. The mini tostada was pretty flat but the wonderful salsa helped. Our server never returned to check on our meals or to refill our drinks. She finally removed our plates and then disappeared into the kitchen another 10 minutes before bringing our checks. We informed the cashier of our dissatisfaction but she was blase about the whole issue. All in all it was not a pleasant experience.

La Fonda: Pre August 2009 word association: Napoleon Dynamite La Fonda: Post August 2009 word association: MEXICAN FOOD Yum. I seriously like this place. Greasy, cheesy, salty Mexican food is exactly what I needed after my three nights of BBQ on the river. The Chicken Tortilla Soup was bomb and the iceberg salad with ranch and cheddar cheese for some reason was one of the best salads I've ever tasted. My three combo platter (soup or salad included) was heaven. I started with a delicious crispy taco stuffed with crisp shredded beef, lettuce, tons of cheese and tomatoes. Next I devoured my cheese enchilada that was soooo cheesy. It was almost too cheesy (please note: almost.) Last I enjoyed my rolled beef taco. The rice was very good, perfectly cooked. The servers are attentive and the atmosphere is fun. The perfect place to stop after a long week of sun and BBQs.

Their Tortilla Soup is one of the best restaurants soups I've ever had before. It's very rich in flavors and made with love. Next time we went to Yuma, we went to this restaurant specially to have their tortilla soup. Unfortunately, they are closed on Sundays. :(

I came here for lunch, ordered the Barbacoa. By far, THE WORST TASTING BARBACOA I HAVE EVER TASTED. It tasted like it sat and been reheated day in and day out, again and again (possibly because it had not been selling). The worst part was that they tried to cover it up by dousing it with loads of vinegar. Worse part (#2) the service was extremely slow, not just for our small party of six, but for others as well. We can see the waitresses chatting for a long time. When we finally got our bill (all the waitresses finally realized people were waiting) we had to wait in line because a lot of other people had to pay at a single cash register. The third worst part about this is that I've been here 3 other times in the recent past. I've given this place chances due to recommendations, but have been extremely disappointed EACH AND EVERY TIME.

What a random little diamond in the rough! We were on our way from San Diego to Phoenix and needed a little dinner. We never would have gone so far from the freeway, but of course yelp steered us in the right direction. This place was delicious and the staff was friendly. The portions were gigantic! If I lived anywhere near Yuma I would definitely be a regular here.

Finding an outstanding Mexican restaurant among all of Arizona's gazillion Mexican restaurants is difficult, but finding La Fonda in Yuma was easy 'cause my employer, cowboy actor and singer Gene Autry first took me there 30 years ago (he loved it) and I love going back. It has been in the same location since 1940, and I gather it has been the best in the area for all that long. Perfect for lunch, no doubt for dinner too, if you're stopping in Yuma for the night. Hola!

I really like La Fonda. I like the fajitas ( chicken) and I like the tortilla soup ( chicken) and I like the enchiladas ( chicken). See a theme? Anyway, it's pretty good stuff. I don't think it's too gringo-ized, and it it can run circles over what they serve up as Mexican in Portland, OR where I'm living now... dreaming of tortilla soup or sucking it up and making it myself! I suggest you go eat something (probably chicken) for me.

I'm not a great fan of Mexican food. I know. What am I doing in AZ? I do love this restaurant. The Sonoran style enchiladas are my favorite. The albondigas soup is good but very uneven: sometimes it's got meatballs and sometimes it's mostly celery. Even so the flavor of the broth is very good. Service there is not great. I've never had occasion to leave a 20% tip due to slowness and inability to refill my drink. They have some quirky music CDs at the cash register and I've bought a couple that ended up being some of my favorites. I enjoy going here and we like the fact that the portions are good but not excessive

The tortilla soup would score a five-probably the best I have ever had. If I could go 3 1/2 stars with this review I would. The food is good, but nothing exceptional. Good salsa and chips, great chicken rolled tacos and chicken burritos. Steak tacos are ok, a little dry but good flavor. They were out of sopapillas, but the churro was decent. Reasonable prices and great service make this a nice little lunch or dinner stop if you are in Yuma or passing through since it's not far off the interstate.

I did not like the food or the service. The salsa was watery and did have a hint of spice. I think they used some canned tomatoes for the salsa. I had to hunt down the waitress for straws, no big deal. Then we got our salads. I have a problem with iceberg lettuce salads. Yuma is the lettuce capital, come on people. I ordered shrimp, umm sorry no shrimp. Ok grilled chicken and my husband got carne asada tacos. His meat was cool with no flavor. My chicken was grilled but tough. I asked for some pico to try and give it a little flavor. Charge 95 cents for a tiny cup of pico! Then we waited and waited for drink refills, had to go looking for the waitress. She smiled and was nice when she brought the check. Too late. Won't come back here. Ever.

Outstanding food and service. I had the #2 combination, cheese enchilada, chile relleno, rice and beans. The combo included some of the best albondigas soup I've ever had.

My favorite Mexican food place in town. The food is always very addictive and the house salsa has a great, very peppery, flavor. They make good margaritas and have a decent selection of beers. More importantly than the food, though, is the always great service and vibe of this restaurant. I always recommend this place to guests/visitors, and seldom disappoint.

One word: overrated!!! Before I mention the negatives, let me mention what is going right for this place: the tortilla soup is outstanding (as others mentioned), everything tastes pretty fresh, and the portions are a fair size. On the other hand, the salsa is gross. Sonoran style or not, it's a blend of water, pepper, other spices, and some tomatoes that make for a poor concoction. I got the Friday night fajitas (they're also offered on Thursday) which looked like an Asian vegetable blend (mostly onions, zucchini, peppers, and carrots) and it had minimal meat. The entire dish was quite bland and didn't come with guacamole, sour cream, or cheese. I was also given only two tortillas for the entire meal. After requesting more, the waitress included the extra three tortillas for $1.89 on the tab. When paying at the counter, I asked the staff member why I was charged for additional tortillas when I only got five total. To her credit, she kindly took the "extra" tortillas off the bill. Aside from all this, the service was okay to a bit slow, the decor was from the 80's, and the location is nothing short of being ghetto. I'll probably never return, however, if I had to choose between some other Sonoran restaurants in Yuma (such as Las Herraduras, Mr. G's) I'd to to La Fonda's. That doesn't mean La Fonda's is that good, it just means that it's not that bad!

Hands down, my absolute favourite Mexican restaurant in the whole wide world. Everything is good, my favourites are anything Sonora style and filled with beans and cheese. I am so sad I no longer live in Yuma because this was one of my go-to places on a regular basis! Go! Now!

Started out really good with the tortilla soup but went down hill quickly. Had the tres Ponchos (fish, shrimp and chicken tacos) all three were very bland. Salsa wasn't very good and tasted like it came from a bottle. Service was terrible it wasn't busy just a young girl and not very professional. I guess I can't complain I've been in Yuma for five weeks, eating out nearly every night and I finally had a bad meal.

Let's say it should get a 3,5 star, but definitely not 4 in my book. We were on our way from San Diego to Tucson and planned to stop in Yuma. ETA was noon, so I yelped a place for lunch and this is what came up. I guess there may not be too many choices, so this is rather good. We both had an excellent lunch, but I'm pinching of a star because I think it was a little pricey for what it's worth.

While driving through Yuma, my sister & I decided to try La Fonda based on previous reviews. We were underwhelmed with everything except the tortilla soup. Maybe we ordered wrong, but everything tasted like it had been fried in old oil. In fact, we realized that it all tasted slightly like Wendy's chicken nuggets! I would go back ... but ONLY for the tortilla soup.

All I can say is YUM! I can take or leave Mexican food most of the time, but I was thoroughly impressed with the variety on the menu and the well developed flavors in the food. First off, the salsa was savory and had just enough kick to keep me eating it. I seriously considered ordering some to go. We had the famous tortilla soup and it was a bowl full of cheesy, flavorful goodness. Probably the best tortilla soup I've ever had. We also had the albondigas soup. The clear broth was a little bland, but tasted much better when we added a little salt, pepper, and salsa. The meatballs were yummy, though. My husband ordered a soft taco plate. I was amazed at how tasty the chicken and the carne asada was. Both offered a great bouquet of tastes. I ordered the chipotle enchilada, which comes stuffed with chicken and cheese. The sauce prominently displayed the smoky chipotle flavor without being overwhelming. It was complimented the jack cheese greatly. We finished the meal by sharing Soapapillas, which are basically fresh flour tortilla squares deep fried and drizzled with honey, butter, and cinnamon sugar and served with vanilla ice cream. The dessert was heavenly! As others have mentioned, the service was a little slow, but the food is definitely worth the wait.

Pretty good, but again, one must understand this is "pretty good for Yuma." They do have good dishes here, but as one person mentioned, it is basically just a few variations of different food surrounded by refried beans, sprinkled with cheese, then baked briefly in an oven. Everythiing I had did tase pretty good though, and the chips and salsa they bring out are really good. I would have to say that Mi Rancho on 4th is just a little better.

My folks have been going to La Fonda for over 20 years and eat here once a week. We kids go with almost every visit to Yuma, so I've been here quite a few times over the years. The last trip was the first time I tried their fajitas and I couldn't stop eating them long after I was full. Well seasoned and sizzling hot on the cast iron plate. Good tortillas, too. I also sampled the barbacoa plate and thought that was tasty as well. The folks say it's the best Mexican restaurant in town and while I have limited comparissons, I can't quibble with that. And, depending on your choices, it can be very inexpensive.

The tortilla soup is as good as advertised, best soup I've ever had. It's actually more of a chili but that's a quibble and a good one. Everything else was pretty standard. The thing that made it a 3 instead of a 4 was for an enchallada lunch special and lemonade, the bill was $12.35, throw in $2 for the tip and that's almost a $15 lunch. That's a little steep IMO when I can go up to Jector's and get right for $3.90 + tax. Anyway, the tortilla soup is the bomb, it alone is worth one trip

I have yet (and I have been here alot) to be disappointed. If you want reliably good Mexican food GO HERE. The service is above par, the selection is extensive (as far as mexican food goes) and the prices are reasonable. I wouldn't feel cheated if I paid a little more for this food as it is always good. My favorite is the #11 (beef or chicken tacos) I always chose carne(beef) with flour tortillas and the tortilla soup. Yeah, I remember the # of the meal, proves I always go here, or may prove I need to go on a diet! Andria posted a review of La Fonda that was also good, she posted a picture that I just realized had a plate of food in it. WOW.

Really good Mexican food that I would have never found without Yelp. The food was very good, the atmosphere was typical - it's definitely worth going to.

Not sure what everyone is raving about. Food was less than average. Chips were excellent though. We ordered the chimichangas & the charbroiled chicken. The chicken was room temp & dried out. Never had chimichangas that are not crispy. Rather go hungry than have to eat there again.

Excellent Chile Relleno and the tortillas are great too. You can buy pre-made rolled tacos and tortillas to go from the register.

Although off the main streets, this jewel of authentic Mexican cuisine is worth the search. The taquitos (they call them rolled tacos) were delicious, yummy salsa and wonderfully crisp tacos.

  • Cameron C.

Not the best lunch experience. The photos on Yelp are accurate but the flavor seems to be lacking. The chicken tortilla soup was the best part if that tells you anything. The salsa was very watered down. The fish tacos have unevenly sliced large chunks of fish, one chunk per taco. They seem to be grilled for the same period of time which means small pieces are very well done an nearly inedible. In addition, the fish seems to be of low quality with little or no seasoning. The service staff was not up to the challenge of a semi-busy lunch hour. Very mediocre overall.

Great little place! Attentive wait staff that were so patient with our little ones, great food at a fair price. Will certainly return!

My mom grew up in Yuma and used to hit Chretin's back when it was at the old spot every Sunday from about 1960 to 1980. Everyone in the family has since moved away but we went back and needed some Yuma Mexican food. Chretin's isn't what it used to be so we went to La Fonda, the other old Yuma staple. It was a good decision. Still goes down as some of the best Mexican food I have had, and I've been all up down the west coast as well as through Texas. This is the spot. You'll want to go here if you're in Yuma. Rolled tacos are a must.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
