I didn't get to go out as much as I would have liked during my stay in Tucson, but I am so happy that I did make it out to this place. It's a little bit of a drive from downtown Tucson but I promise it is well worth it. As soon as we arrived I liked what I saw with the old school western feel. The weather was beautiful so we grabbed some beers at the bar but took them outside to enjoy on the picnic tables out front. We were a big group of about 12 people but they handled us very well. I ordered the 7oz filet mignon because I wasn't feeling too hungry and that was definitely the best choice. Soon after we ordered they brought out thick slices of Texas Toast along with baked beans and fresh salsa. The toast and beans were both excellent but the salsa was absolutely mind blowing. I have absolutely no idea what they put in it to make it taste so good but it was hands-down the best salsa I've ever had in my life. The filet was an absolutely delicious cut of meat but unfortunately it wasn't cooked the way I asked for it. I ordered it medium-rare but it came out medium. I checked with a coworker who also ordered the filet and his came out medium-well rather than the medium he asked for. So it may be worth it to order one level less cooked than you are used to. That was my only complaint about the meal, but I still think this place deserves a 5-star rating. Overall, I would love to be sent back to Tucson for work to have another chance to visit this restaurant again.

The feel is very western and rugged at this restaurant. So if what you're going for is ambiance and romance- this is not that place. Having said that, we brought my awesome father in law for a nice casual steak dinner, and it was as expected. I loved the smell of the wood burning grill from the start. Apparently some people have an aversion to it but for me it was one of the best things about the place. I ordered a ribeye and a salad and they were both good... not spectacular. I felt the food and atmosphere just didn't correlate very well with the prices that seemed high for what I've had at better steak houses and paid less. I do think they have great prices on their draft beer, It was only $13 for a big ol pitcher of Kiltlifter!

I would've went straight for the bone-in ribeye, but my per diem doesn't cover half the cost. Instead, I got the 11.95 Harris Ranch cheeseburger, cooked medium, with a corn on the cob. The server was really nice to give me a salad on the house. I hope I don't get anyone in trouble. The burger was juicy and very tasty. The best part was the consistency from first to last bite. It wasn't a steak, but it satisfied my appetite, as well as my wallet. I hope this review helps those who just aren't in the mood for steak. My co-worker got the beef ribs, which looked mouth-watering. I never tasted it though. The Texas toast was very buttery and crunchy...love it! I dared not finish it. I loved the decor, but the section I was in was a bit dark. I couldn't take a no flash picture of my food. There's no pictures of the burger, but the salad gets some love. Lastly, the service was awesome. Definitely a 5-star restaurant. After years of no reviews, I'm back at it. Finally able to successfully post on my phone.

Have been coming here for almost 30 years and my parents for even longer. By far the best steakhouse in Tucson and have never had a bad experience. Great old-fashioned atmosphere and meat is cooked over real mesquite and not in a broiler oven. This restaurant is a must-see if you're in town. Highly recommend!

Don't sit down wind of the grill .. by the end of our dinner I was so nauseous from the smoke I couldn't get out of there quick enough. Once I got home I hot footed it into the shower to de-smoke and dropped my clothes into the wash immediately. I'm all for a good steak or ribs but with the dirty, cluttered walls, plastic pinching chairs and lack of anything else other than meat on the menu would have me choosing a different restaurant and it should you too.

I really don't understand how anyone can give this place less than 4 stars. If you are looking for a high end steak house, this is not the place. This is NOT Ruth Chris steak house. It's a hole in the wall, cowboy boot wearin, southwestern steak joint that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after you visit. Most of the reviews on this page are from people complaining about the decor and price. If you think you are paying too much, please tell me a steak joint in Tucson that is worth the $. Go to Sullivans and tell me how much you spend for the same product. Hard pressed I promise. (Our recent visit) The food was great. Half rack beef ribs that literally melt off the bone, garlic Texas toast and a beer. Worth every penny. Waitress was super sweet and helpful. Most of the waitresses now are young (when I went here as a kid they were a bit rougher looking). Now at least they seem softer around the edges, hopefully brining in a younger crowd. Manager and Bartender sat and talked to me for a while and bar patrons were very friendly. Saw the reviews on yelp and had to chime in. You know Tucson is turning into Phoenix when people complain about the price and décor of Lil Abners. If you want high end, take your money back to Scottsdale.

I had to come into Tucson on an unexpected business trip and once again found myself a guest at this "steak house"...... Obviously its me that does not get this place....you get a 1 pound bone-in ribeye (somebody got their finger on the scale) for $28.00 Salad I fail to understand how lettuce, and an onion "ring" constitutes a salad. Our waitress, who was she... we had to keep asking the 'helper" for things we needed, like our beers...can we have a glass, then brought one (hey can't count, there are two of us)... How come we got those beans and bread ten minutes before our steaks..... and no plates or bowls Failed to get any one's attention about this. We order medium rare steaks, not well done.... waited, and waited and waited to see the waitress, to say hey.... look at the inside of this steak, where is the pink, red, yes bloody. No they were damn near well done!!! At one time many years ago the manager would have come over and apologized, and made sure to get it correct...... Well, no apology, only it will take us another 30 minutes to recook the the steaks.... You know, there comes a point when owners care more about the money going into their pockets then the people who put it there, when nothing changes except the smaller size of the portions, and non attentive wait staff...its time for a change. There are many choices in Tucson these days, and when it is my choice you won't find me here.

I had a great steak at Lil Abner's this weekend. The outside seating is great for summer nights, the sides were delicious, and the steak was everything I wanted. I highly recommend this lovely, relaxed, homey steakhouse.

Delicious mesquite-grilled steak - you just have to walk into the parking lot to know that you want to eat there. Gorgeous outdoor patio area that was very pleasant even at the end of November - and a fun area indoors. I had the filet which was the best steak I've had in a very long time (and I eat a lot of steak). The salad was ordinary, the beans and Texas toast were quite good, the salsa was unexpectedly good, and the sweet corn (yes, $3 extra) was delicious! They now have a printed menu and also serve wine- highly recommended for a colorful Tucson experience.

I've been coming here when visiting family in Tucson for over 30 years. And, I'm sad to say, the last few visits have shown a downward spiral that just doesn't seem to be getting any better. My wife and I were here at 7 on a Friday night which, in the better days, would have meant a good wait. Not this time. No one outside, and we were immediately seated in a dining room that was maybe a third full. I ordered a full rack of pork ribs, and that's just what I got. A full rack of pretty well tasteless ribs that had not had any seasoning, marinade, or basted sauce. Just a bowl of something out of a jar on the side. Now normally when I have ribs, I finish mine and start looking to see who can't finish theirs and offer my help. Not this time; in fact, I didn't even finish mine; left three or four. So we asked our waitress for the check. Nothing. A while later we asked the busboy. We watched him tell the waitress. Nothing. She went to the table next to ours and took drink orders, and then hung around the bar while they were being filled . Obviously no time in her busy schedule to bring our check. We finally got up and headed to the front, passing her face to face as she delivered drinks. Upon arriving there, the bartender asked, "Two for dinner?" No, we want our check. He went in the back, told someone we needed our check. Nothing. Another 3-4 minutes and the hostess returned. "Two for dinner?" No, we 're trying to pay and leave. Five minutes later, yet another person showed up and we were finally able to pay and leave. And given the rather pricy, poor food and incredibly pathetic service, not likely to return

I came here for my husband's work Christmas party and even after reading the yelp reviews I decided I was going to give it a try. I really tried to give it a positive note on every aspect of the restaurant but even after that I can't give it more than two stars. We were there at 7 PM on a Saturday night and were one of three big party tables along with maybe two other tables the entire night. A very sparse crowd for Saturday night during the holiday season which led me to believe that maybe we should've chosen another place. The menu is very simple very sparse but what struck me as very odd was the out Regis prices for Tucson steakhouse with the history of this place. The ambience was very roadhouse-ish with roaring fire places and bathrooms that looked literally like out houses. Seating or long tables very cafeteria like. We had two servers assigned to our party but that lead to more confusion than it was worth. The waitresses seems confused as to the multiple orders and different people wanting different sides with their meals. The portion sizes themselves were great but the cuts of steak were nothing late the prices indicated. Are sides of big potatoes and corn on the cob came with tabs of butter and packets of sour cream is you would see in a fast food restaurant. Besides came out first then the waitresses brought out the steaks stacked up like file folders on top of each other. This bothered me a bit. For $20-$30 a steak you would expect something better than you could cook at home it seems like a good effort but missed. Like I said before the service staff became confused very easily in for a party of 12 we waited 45 minutes for our check. The head of our party had to seek out to other people a hostess and a bartender to be able to get the final bill. So while sitting in a very frigid cold dining room we waited with no one in site. And like I said there were maybe four tables in the restaurant by 9 o'clock on a Saturday night. I know this place is an institution but other then the possibility of it being a very expensive roadside pitstop I would choose some other place.

I'm forced to wonder what some of the reviewers think makes a good steak. Must be cloth napkins, velvet upholstery, and severely overpriced box-store quality steaks. This was a quality steak! I went with the rib-eye and just could not have been happier. Just the right amount of crunch on the outside and so juicy inside that it took three pieces of Texas Toast to sop up all the goodness. The beans were good, the salad so-so, and the potato average. But I didn't go there for any of that stuff, I went for the steak and it was good. If you grew-up in Texas, you'll recognize this place right away. It's very typical of a Texas steakhouse that serves normal people, instead of the 1% wannabes. If you want a good steak, go here. If you want to brag to your friends about how the waiter put the napkin on your lap for you, well, really just go away.

The service is poor and the place is gross and old. The plates and silverware are also nasty. The steaks are not THAT good. They're your basic Shamrock Farms pieces of meat, only grilled on a mesquite grill. Big whoop. The rack of ribs is tiny and a waste of money. The burgers are dry and the buns are stale. The place is highly over priced and the drink menu is lacking. I would recommend elsewhere. Caytons is near by and provide steaks and margaritas out of this world. Food lovers paradise. I recommend Caytons for your steak night.

Some friends recently went there and raved about it...well to me it was meh! The steak was just ok, the beans were kinda plain and the toast was cold and tasteless. The waitress was not that great either. Overall, I wouldn't go back but that is just me...just saying.

Have been going here for 20 years every year when we go to the Tucson Gem Show. They were packed as usual and in the past it was worth a little wait. But this time was ridiculous. We had a 7pm reservation and got there early we didn't get a table until after 8. Not sure what happened. I saw later they had done a coupon promotion with the AGTA at the convention center and should have expected a crowd. They had one bartender working his tale off, who didn't get to us sitting at the bar waiting for our table for over 20 minutes. So, ok I am willing to put up with a wait and hassle if the food is great as it has been in the past. But now even though the prices have gone up at least 50% since the last time year my Beef ribs were trimmed down to the bone and instead of being tender falling off the bone almost they were over done and even crispy around the edges. Hope they get it together. This is not a good trend. BTW the cost index should be at least $$$ now as my half rack was close to $30 .

Not only are these people so kind and hilarious, they served me the best pork ribs I've had in Arizona. If you're looking for juicy perfectly melty meat and great stories from the friendliest servers and bartenders any traveler could ask for, I could not recommend this place with more confidence.

There are 2 kinds of people: those who feel perfectly comfortable in a room festooned with graffiti and old license plates, and those who do not believe decorating the restroom doors to look like outhouses is an especially appetizing choice for a restaurant. Ambience? Does a painting of John Wayne over the fireplace count? Decor aside, the food at Lil Abner's left me underwhelmed. It's priced like a nice steakhouse, but the quality didn't reflect that. The restaurant itself was freezing, but we were seated next to the fire, which was the best part of the experience. Although there were 5 of us in the party, we were given a single menu, which we had to take turns passing around. The menu itself is pretty bare. You can get burgers or ribs or half a chicken, with a few choices for steak, and there aren't any in between sizes. You can have 8 ounces or 16 ounces or 32 ounces. Everything comes with beans, salsa, and Texas toast. Corn or potatoes cost extra, by a sort of ridiculous amount. This isn't a place for picky kids, either. The kids' menu is hot dog or hamburger. We ordered a cheeseburger, the 1/2 chicken, and a 16 ounce T-bone. The latter 2 came with dense and indifferent salads, mostly romaine with a smattering of carrot shreds and a thin piece of onion. There are only 3 salad dressings to choose from. I didn't try the burger, but it looked good (the most attractively plated of all the food) and my stepson and husband seemed to think it was all right. The chicken was almost too dry to swallow. Black on the outside and basically mummified on the inside. Not sure what they had against that chicken, but they definitely took their revenge. Potato: edible. You can add your own sour cream, which is a nice touch if you like sour cream. The steak was cooked properly but the piece of meat was fairly thin and run through with gristle, big chunks that I had to spit back out because they were impossible to chew or swallow. It was also pretty salty. Not worth $25! The bottomless side of beans didn't taste any different from what you dump out of the can, which is probably why they're served with a bowl of salsa, which would be a great idea if the salsa wasn't also completely flavorless. The Texas toast was OK, although my stepdaughter found it greatly improved by buttering it herself. Staff was very perky and friendly and accommodating. I guess this place has been in business a long time. It might be time for a total overhaul.

We came, we saw, we ate, we left - never to return. Based on all the great Yelp reviews I was so hopeful and wanted to like this place but the cons outweigh the pros. It was a cold and damp night. Our granddaughter soaked her pants stomping in all the puddles of water as we walked thru the outdoor dining room to get to their door. Can't anyone in Tucson pour concrete so it doesn't collect water? I see this everywhere I go. They could have at least swept the water out of the puddle to dry concrete but maybe they thought it was part of their charm. We had trouble finding the door to go inside. My wife opened a door and thought it was the bar. I had to go back to the car and had trouble getting thru this door in the dark. Make sure you pull on it, because if you push the door open it jams on the concrete floor. We were seated at the end of the dining room right by the fireplace. The decor is cozy and the fire was really nice. I commented on the outhouses built into the wall and never once did I think they were the real functioning restrooms. Actually they are the entrances to the restrooms. I didn't like the placement of tables right in front of them. I certainly wouldn't want people brushing up against me trying to squeeze thru the restroom doors. (See the photo from Dawn) This place is not kid friendly and certainly not a place to bring a small child. With a booth we can control our 3 yr old granddaughter well. With picnic table seating she gets up and runs around too much. Beware the online menu is out of date. That $3 kid hotdog is now $4 and nothing comes with it. That is the only selection for a child. Even the coloring pages are copied out of a coloring book, no puzzles, games, mazes, etc you see at so many kid friendly places. But at least they had cups with lids for the children. I ordered the 7 oz filet which was ok but at $25, WAY over priced. Even I can buy filet mignon at $16 a pound at Basha's, arguably the most expensive grocery store so with a regular commercial discount the markup is too extreme for me and that alone will make me never come back. For $25, I expect a filet cooked better than I can do it on my grill since they are the professionals. Yeah I have been grilling for 40 years but if you charge me what Ruth's Chris charges, it better be top notch like they are. Bottom line, I could have grilled a better or just as good as steak that I paid Lil Abner's $25. I counted only four tables seated all night. Only one when we left at 6 pm on a Saturday night. I guess a lot of other people share my opinion. Other cons: the ranch beans were too salty, barely edible. The salads had too much dressing on them and too few dressing choices. Make sure you ask for it on the side, tho I doubt if they do that here. The butter served were those individual patties wrapped up and we all needed to unwrap at least two each for our baked potatoes & corn cobs. Most places served it whipped in an open cup so it melts instantly. Those patties are cold and take awhile to melt and it gets messy dealing with all those wrappers. The wait for the check-in to see if we wanted dessert or the check was too long. Pros: They did not bring the bread until the meal was ready. Too many places bring bread when you sit down and I have to ask them to take it away, otherwise the kids fill up on it and never eat their ordered food. The corn on the cob is a full cob, not a half cob. My beer was served with a frozen mug. We had two servers working our table and keeping up well with everything until it was time for the check. At least we can now say that we have been to Lil Abner's Steakhouse. We did eat our meal and get filled up until we had no room for dessert, hence the three stars. Wish I could say we would be going back but the total bill including 18% tip was $93 and I feel we did not get the full value for that price. Definitely not bringing out-of-towners here.

This place is good! Not sure why it's only 3.5 stars - I think people have the wrong expectations when coming here. This isn't Flemings or Mortons. This is a locals BBQ joint. It's casual down home type food and atmosphere. The menu is simple but executed well. We had the pork ribs and the meat was incredibly tender and good quality. The portions are generous and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Our only issue was that our poor waitress had been assigned what seemed like over 8 tables. She was as quick as she could be though and there were plenty of bussers around who attended to the table as well. If I'm ever in Tucson again I'd be happy to patron this restaurant again!

Extremely overpriced for the 'cowboy' steaks they offer. Everything is a la cart adding to the surprising bill total at the end. There is one beer so don't ask, just say beer. Their $10.00 burgers don't compare to 'The Station's fresh $7.00 burgers right down the street and the atmosphere and service is much better there. I'd skip this place, save your $$.

It had been years since we last went to LIl Abner's. The old grey mare ain't what she used to be aptly describes our recent experience. Service was not a problem. I will stick to reviewing the steak since that is why one goes there. We ordered medium -rare T-bones tending to the rare side. With the terrible lighting (not really atmosphere) hiding any color, only the lack of juice from the paper thin cut hinted at the real temperature. A cut this thin can be properly done at home or, if out, by a a very careful cook. That cook was not there on our visit. I question those writers who say they got a juicy "well done" T-bone. Price - just say it is overpriced for what you get. Another old Tucson institution bites the dust.

I've only dined in here once and I have to say it was an excellent experience. The staff were very friendly and professional. I ordered the half pork rib rack with a baked potato and salad with blue cheese dressing. The rib was cooked very well, they fell right off the bone. The salad was delicious and fresh. The baked potato was very soft and rich in flavor. It was a wonderful dining experience and I highly recommend it.

Every time I'm in town for the Gem & Mineral Show, we always go to Lil Abner's. Their steak is amazing. Definitely the best steak I've ever had, and I've eaten A LOT of steak from different places. The temps are always on point. Servers are great, and I love the graffiti decoration. It's so interesting to read what people wrote. Will come back and will definitely recommend.

This place is down home goooood! The food is amazing. The chicken was tender & delicious. Steaks were cooked to perfection. Atmosphere is cowboy comfy & the waitstaff was very friendly. This isn't Bob's Steakhouse but it's food is probably better. Be prepared for a family-style type meal & come hungry. You will leave stuffed. I have no complaints & would definitely go again.

I love the food, but you do need to be prepared for an expensive meal. The atmosphere is fun too. This place is good for large groups. They have really big tables. Here's a tip though. The bathroom is really tough to find! I was embarrassed because I got lost. Plus they placed a large group of people right in front of the door.

Was in Arizona in business, wanted steak. This place was supposed to be open (per website info), but was completely deserted. No signs posted to indicate why either. Called their phone, recorded message stated the hours open with no explanation for being closed. I won't try coming back here again...

Porterhouse ! Since moving to Marana in 2004, i've not found a steak house i've liked better. They grill the meat outside on mesquite and the menu is so basic, they don't even print it up anymore. I used to tell everyone I met, to go here, and some have thought they liked Daisy Mae's more since there is a larger menu variety including prime rib. (I guess the same ownership connects the two). All I can say is you get a little salad with a slice of onion on top DRENCHED in dressing, ranch beans and texas toast with anything you choose. You are very likely to have a hard time seeing anything since it's basically inside a cabin with few windows. You are likely going to sit at a picnic bench, which isn't ideal for families or persons who have limited mobility. However this meal is an experience that is out of this world. Consistently prepared perfection, if you love ribs, T-bone steaks, porterhouse, beef or pork ribs, chicken, filet mignon and new york strip(I think). I have always split a porterhouse with my husband. They offer few sides, baked potato or corn on the cob. I'm pretty sure the offer hotdogs to children....but I am so engrossed in what i'm about to receive I sort of get tunnel vision waiting for my meat to arrive. They have a bar, in the last 2-3 years give you a menu of wines when you are seated and have live music on the weekends. This is a very casual place, with wall to wall graffiti & old license plates mounted everywhere and a dirt parking lot. The restrooms might be a bit tricky to navigate if you have mobility issues, since the tables are packed closely inside, but for me I just love it. If you haven't been and love beef, go. We take all our out-of-town meat-eating guests here and so far it's been to rave reviews.

These people know how to do meat!! I had the pork ribs and they were perfect! Just fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. I had tastes of the sirloin and rib eye and they were just as delectable! Review their menu online before you go, they don't have a printed menu. (The waitress we had could rattle it off pretty quick though!) They have a good selection of beers, with just one (Fat Tire) on tap. Their cheap wines do the trick and a full bar. Unlimited texas garlic toast and beans come with your meal. You also get a salad (aka just lettuce and onions). You can get a HUGE baked potato or corn on the cob a la carte with your meal. They grill all their meat outside and I take one star off for high class prices in a whole in the wall looking place. Very rustic. Bring your sharpie marker to write your name on their walls. I will be back again!

If you have friends or family in town this is the place to take them for that Tucson experience. You are paying for the atmosphere not the food. Yes the food is good, it's just not my type of steakhouse. The outdoor mesquite grill is not something I've seen at any other place. It does provide some great flavor to the steaks and very entertaining to watch. The one thing I found interesting is that there are no menus. It is a verbal menu that the server will go over with at the table. The menu is limited but food is always prepared well the couple time that I have dined with them. The only option you get to pick for sides are a baked potato that is extra. The beans and bread that come with the meal are good and all you can eat. I live very close to Lil Abner's and on some nights if the wind is blowing just right you can smell that mesquite wood burning. Makes you hungry for a steak.

Two stars because we were a party of 60 for an awards ceremony. No air conditioning, 55 minute ticket time because of only one chef, I guessing. It not like we just showed up, they had at least two months notice. Over priced, $ 3.00 ice tea, limited menu. My steak was cooked right, but it was a very lean piece of meat and had little flavor and was tough. Family style seating with a huge bowl of beans that went untouched, looked like canned. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. The owner? Was kinda rude. Talked to me like I was stupid cause I could not find the rest room, which is a door that looks like the rest of the wall. Go somewhere else, like Daisy Mae's.

Went here many years ago while in Tucson for a conference. Awesome fall off the bone ribs. Really a cool place. They cook the ribs outside as you walk in. Smells so good. Definitely don't take your gastronomically challenged veggie friends here.

This place is the best ribs in Tucson. I know the name has steak house it it but pork ribs are the way to go. I have taken numerous out of towners here and they all say hands down best ribs ever. I've had ribs everywhere from Memphis to Boston and these are the real deal. Honestly if you want steak every place in town has a sirloin why come here for it. I noticed all the people who didn't like this place ordered steak and felt it was overpriced, well next time stick with the ribs.

Normally have a great steak but this last time steak med- well steak was aver cooked and medium steak was under cooked. When brought up to owner's attention he did nothing....bad service and over priced steaks that are aren't cooked to specification!!! Won't be back there!!!

Wow has this place gone downhill! Used to have some of the best ribs in town. No more. Now they are overcooked, dry pieces of jerky hanging off the bone. Not even the best sauce could save them so it didn't matter that the sauce that came with them was completely uninspiring. Sorry that I ordered them. A long way from the old days here and at the Lil Abner's Express at Ft. Lowell and First. Steaks are a different matter. Better than average but not much to brag about. Some of our steaks were tough. Others not. All properly cooked. The pinto beans are served in unlimited amounts, but who wants them? They were as bland as beans could possibly be so I reached for the salsa. It was like slop: looked like splattered tomatoes in a bowl with not much else and too tasteless to help the beans. One bright spot was the Texas Garlic Toast. Thankfully as much as you want. Finally, beware of the lack of menus. Really, one must ask why there are no menus? Too expensive to print at the prices they charge? The spoken menus are tacky, an annoyance and unfair to the customer. Rattled off so fast that some of the spiel has to be repeated. Incomplete too. Not all the options, such as steak and rib combos, are verbalized by the wait staff. Nor do you get to see the outrageously high prices given the mediocre quality. Especially in such kitsch, neglected and run down surroundings. This place needs a facelift and serious upgrading in order to return to its old glory days.

Very overpriced for the quality and terrible service. Steak was decent but for $25 could have had a decent salad & better sides than beans & salsa along with Texas toast. The ribs were unremarkable & the sauce on the side was disgusting. Very vinegar taste. Don't waste your time & money!

Ate there last night. I'm low carbing, so I didn't care about anything but a steak. The salad was so so. The beans and bread smelled great, but what can I say other than.... The bone-in ribeye was quite simply the best steak I've ever had. 'nuff said.

This is a classic hole in the wall. Been there for years, and used to be in the middle of nowhere until the city expanded. Swamp cooler, graffiti on the walls and license plates hanging from the ceiling are all part of the look. They only have a few menu items and they recite them to you at the table. (There are no printed menus). The food and service are excellent - we really enjoyed our t-bone and bone-in ribeye! The one major drawback is the price, as many have mentioned. Very expensive for a hole in the wall! But if you don't care about atmosphere and are looking for a good steak, this might be your place...

They cook all the beef outside on an open mesquite fire. We iive near this place and when I just drive by this place it makes my mouth water. I usually get the bone-in ribeye with a baked potato cooked medium. The steaks always have a nice smoky mesquite flavor in them. The beans here are the bomb and you can use the garlic toast to dip into the beans and it is so delicious. The salsa is also very good. They also make their own fudge here so the sundaes are so sweet and tasty. It is a bit pricy, but everything is very good.

This place has been here forever. As in, John Wayne ate here, more than once. It's still great, with ribs and steak cooked to delicious tenderness over an open mesquite fire outdoors. Our ribs literally fell off the meat, so tender and delicious. Ignore the ho-hum salad (lost a star) and avoid the potato(good, basic butter n sour cream, huge) because the steaks and ribs are huge. Beans are yummy as is the garlic toast. It's not cheap, and the atmosphere is 'hokey old west'. Bring a Sharpie and autograph the walls if you can find a place. Indoor and outdoor seating, we were indoors right next to the roaring fire in the fireplace. It's a reliably good place to get good food in a friendly atmosphere. Expect $25 a person. Oh - real sasparilla soda. Mmmmmmmmm

The best meal I've had in 2013. We visited late on a Saturday night and sat at a picnic table outside under the stars and amidst the mesquite smoke that wafted plentifully from the large outdoor range. The filet mignon was as soft and flavorful as the peaceful scent had foreshadowed. The cuts of meat here are served with beans, salsa, and a seemingly endless ration of Texas toast; all outstanding. As long as you don't expect a formal steakhouse experience here, you will not be disappointed. Lil Abner's is a Tucson gem.

Good steak! Good Steak! GOOD STEAK! VERY GOOD STEAK! EXTREMELY GOOD STEAK! On the hill, long ass drive after a long day of work from my hotel! This place was definitely worth my time. When I first pulled into the parking, I was like wow, WTF. unpaved rubbish road! It looks like a country clay building, but it definitely was a hidden treasure. The walk from the parking lot to the inside of the restaurant was actually pretty short. Your first greeted with a huge outdoor plaza like setting where you see a huge gigantic grill that was built over bricks. As soon as you see that, ur nose will start to itch and sniff like a hungry dog! Next, the setting changes as soon as you walk into the restaurant. It was old country like cowboy house. benches with walls all tagged up by signatures and western decoration! They don't have a menu! Verbal introduction for the menu. I kind of wish they did a menu which I can slowly think through. When they do it verbally and quickly I'm confused and had to get the waiter to repeat himself / herself a billion times. I got a 1lb T-Bone steak. Wonderful! They gave enough garlic bread for everyone at the table. Salsa for everyone! Unlimited refills at no questions asked. The steak was nice and tender and cooked professionally. It had a special taste due to the way they grilled it on the outdoor grill. Overall, I will come back if I'm ever in Tucson again! WAHOO!

Great ribs, sauce needs to be sweetened some & less spicy. Hostess never said hello or looked at us. She just said follow me. Needs a menu other than a verbal menu with no price mentioned.

If you want to "wow" some city slickers, this is the place to take them. As you walk up, you see the biggest BBQ pit ever and old timey western music floats out the open doors. This is really Tucson, at least, as you imagine it 80 years ago. And then to boot, the food is fantastic. You can never go wrong with the filet but the beef ribs are great too. The beans are basic and good, the salad is smothered in heart-stopping dressing, and the texas toast, well let's just say it brings back the only fond memories I have of elementary school lunches. They often have live music performed by a geriatric (in a sweet way) County-Western band. And don't go requesting any bluegrass because this is a WESTERN band. Sometimes the geriatric band is feisty. Per a fellow yelper's request: There are no prices on the menu, but everything is around the same price. The waitress always tells you what cuts of meat they have that evening and the prices hover around $20.00-23.00. Usually the cuts are filet, ribeye, porterhouse, beef ribs, pork ribs and chicken. I think the prices are really reasonable, because the meat is better than Outback quality, not quite a Morton's, so somewhere in between. All the steaks get so smoky from being cooked on the pit, way more flavor than you get from your gas grill at home. Great atmosphere, good prices for quality meat, and fond memories for your city slicker friends.

I had heard mixed reviews about Lil Abner's but since I live right around the corner and every time I pass by I'm usually salivating from the smell of wood smoke and STEAK, I finally decided to try it. It is not trendy or classy, but that is part of it's charm. I had a good time with my family and had a fantastic filet. It was tender and perfectly cooked. While some might say that their meat is pricey, it is very good meat and worth it.

I don't even know where to start. First off, the menu is limited to your typical steakhouse entrees which for you steakhouse novices is your NY Strip, ribeye, t-bone, ribs (pork and beef), and filet mignon. They grill the steaks outdoors which is a lost practice among the modern, trendy, city-lights esque steakhouses of the world. This place brings you back to the old west where a run down building plays host to an absolutely flawless, flavor-packed, and fatty piece of beef known as the ribeye steak. The sides come a'plenty. All you can eat Texas toast and beans, as well as salsa. Again, who still does this besides this place? You get to pork down all the toast and beans while embracing your inner carnivore by scarfing down a fatty of a steak. The dessert I had here is simple, yet delicious. The very humble dessert, the hot fudge sundae, which consisted of three ingredients; hot fudge, vanilla ice cream, and crushed peanuts. The best hot Fu dye sundae I've ever had. And yes, I've had hundreds over my lifetime. This place isn't so cheap, yet the occasional splurge here is very necessary. Takes us back to a humbler place. The place we once knew, the mom and pop steakhouse outside of the city lights. Yes, ladies and gentleman, Lil Abner's is not fantasy, it's the real thing.

What a very pleasant experience it is for a carnivore like me to eat @ a place such as this one. I will highly recommend it to everyone who's around Tucson area. The quality of meat is superb topped with the best outdoor grilling technique! I will definitely come back to this place with all my friends & family for the mouth watering experience of a life time.

The T-bone steak was awesome. Mesquite grilled is the way to go. Salad, beans, salsa were included, and the baked potato was extra, but you will not leave this place hungry. Been eating here for 50 years now. It's my favorite "once a year" place to dine. Knocked off a star i liked the prices back in the 70s and because the building is deteriorating and they're too cheap to fix it up.

  • Bleep S.

5 Stars if you like a mesquite broiled steak. Get the Cowboy, even if you have to share it with a dining companion in order to finish it...It's a 2 pound steak. The beans and salsa that come with the steak are ok...The steak is the star. Do not sit in the music room on Friday or Saturday night unless you love ear splitting country western music. Bring a Sharpie. It's fun to write on the walls...Check out the huge grill outside on the patio.

What Isn't good here?! I'll tell you, NOTHING. everything that they serve on their like 10 item menu is near or the best in Tucson. I love everything on the menu but I find it extremely hard not to order the pork ribs, they ARE the best you can find in Tucson, hands down, no question, I may stab you in the face if you disagree. The BBQ sauce has a delicious spice to it. Free unlimited Toast and beans... which I could eat alone for a solid meal. Any other bean sandwich fans out there? Salads are decent and you get one with every entree. KEEP your silverware, you will want it for the rest of your meal. The place has been doing BBQ way before you were born, and It shows in their food. The walls are tagged with names and license plates from all over.

  • Jeff B.

Been here twice now. I am not sure about any of the negative reviews, because the food here is excellent. A little pricey for T-town, but as a once in a while treat definitely worth while. I had the fillet and it was perfectly done. Others in the party had the chicken which is also fantastic. Menu is limited but that is a good thing. They do what they do well. The sides are great and atmosphere, well it's atmosphere. If you want a highly salted luxurious piece of meat try sullivans or flemings. But, if you want a better cut of meat got to Abner's

    (5)
  • Roland P.

Don't get the great reviews, simple place with outdoor grill. Simple green salad, beans and toast. The grill gives the outside of the meat flavor but the meat although tender was uneatable. This is Golden Corrall quality at high end steak house prices. Definitely a void the sirloin.

Ate the for our annual anaverseery dinner and again were not disappointed. Ordered the 32oz porterhouse medium rare which is more then enough to share and still take some home for the pet. My only problem with Lil Abner's is the charges for the sides, come on a potato should come with the meal when your paying 40.00 bucks for a chunk of meat. Beans and a small house salad did come with the meal to be fair. As stated by others menu is oral and hard to remember sizes and prices of selections, come on folks buy a cheap printer and give the customer a print out with the course and prices. All in all a good experience and would recommend a stop for yourselfs.

  • Charlie G.

If you love steak, but you hate having to dress up to get the absolute best, Lil Abner's is paradise. You can get the best filet mignon you ever ate, cooked to order over an open mesquite barbecue pit the way it's been since the first tired, dusty, hungry passengers stumbled out of a stagecoach here in bygone days. The Wild West is still right here waiting for you: an unpaved parking lot, a rustic wooden building, trestle tables and benches, friendly people, and food that is simple ... and the best of its kind. I guarantee that there is not a better steak to be had anywhere. Caveats: The menu is as limited as that of any stagecoach depot. Steak, beef or pork ribs, chicken. Salad is lettuce with dressing. Beans and salsa come with it; both are house made and good. A baked potato is extra. Ice cream for dessert, or there may be a fruit cobbler. That's it - and that explains why there's no need to print a menu (it's recited verbally). Unless your vegan friend will be satisfied having dressed lettuce and a baked potato with salsa while sitting in a room full of carnivores, take her elsewhere. Or park her at the full bar. She can drown her sorrows while you ponder whether she truly understands just what she's missing here. The steer died happy, I promise. You can taste it! So put on your best T-shirt, jeans and boots and bring a handkerchief. You may need it when you think of all those poor dudes pulling at their neckties at one of those fancy places.

First of all the filet was mouth watering grilled to perfection. I didn't even add salt and I always add it wherever I go. My wife had the bone in steak. She said it was wonderful. Looked like she trimmed a lot of fat off of it. Steaks come with a large side bowl of cooked ranch beans. (no flavor but good beans) and (if you like white bread,) they serve what they call Texas Toast. Tossed salad overfilled the bowl with great tasting Ranch dressing. We ordered a baked potato ($2 extra) and glad we split it. It was huge. When people say pricey, they mean it. This was over $50 for two and we drank only water. The steaks are grilled outside on a huge grill. (neat idea like a ranch) Inside the lights are so low that you wouldn't be able to read a menu. Maybe that's why the waitress tells you the menu. And also maybe it's easier to hear the prices rather than see the prices on a menu. Also probably dark because this place is pretty uh, rugged inside with license plates all over the walls. (Great place for drinkers if you want to tie one on like a cowboy.) Oh ya, the salsa was nice and chunky. Wish it came with tortilla chips. Glad we went. I'd recommend it for a pricey, tasty, fun night.

Rustic steak house. The food was very good but for the prices, you could be eating in the Ritz Carlton. For the prices, you get a lettuce from the bucket for your salad, cowboy beans and pecan pie that was uncleverly store bought. The service was fine and appropriate.

I have been to Lil Abner's many times but tonight was very different. The owner of the restaurant made a scene by yelling at one of his employees in front of co workers as well as patrons. I being a business man myself found this extremely unprofessional and I felt very bad for the young girl. Due to this experience I will no longer frequent this establishment and will be telling colleagues and friends of this. Not good business very disappointed.

Hit up this place with five other friends while visiting Tucson for a weekend business trip. It was highly recommended, and I quickly figured out why. The meat is stupendous and the atmosphere is so Wild West. The slab of beef ribs that was placed in front of me looked like the ones that tipped over Fred Flintstone's car. Absolutely ridiculous and delicious. By the way, there is a printed menu now, with prices and everything. Speaking of that menu, it is pretty limited and the kitchen definitely sacrifices in certain areas so their sole focus can be on the grill. The salad is just a silly and unnecessary small heap of iceberg lettuce with canned ranch dressing. The garlic bread is thick slabs of grocery store white bread with butter and garlic salt (not real garlic). But the meat... oh, the meat... The meat is ridiculously delicious, a tad on the pricey side, but worth every penny. If you're a carnivore, this place is can't-miss. Our waitress was awesome and bought us a pitcher or two of beer as well as a couple of shots, and we LOVED the band - a group of octogenarians who've been playing together for 50-something years.

Bubbly waitress. Great interior, littered with license plates, visitor's notes, horseshoes, wooden benches. It aint fancy...dogpatch wasn't either! About the food... We split a rack of ribs...you get all the salad beans bread you can eat... We were so hungry and the food was good ... Oops I forgot to snap a pix!

Uhmmmm how can I start.. The meat was dry with no flavor, potato was sour, bread oily, I even had a fly in my drink-no apologies...high prices...poor quality cuisine... If u r visiting Tucson go to The Keg, Pinnacle, Sullivan's or even Texas Road House...any of these establishments have better meats...the waitress was nice and did her best to help us...

My brother, father, and i went to Lil Abners on a slow Wednsday night. The service was a bit off in my opinion because we were the only table left ordering food and the server was "busy" at the bar even after making eye contact. We had a Ribeye, T-Bone, and Filet and the quality of the meat seemed to be low grade. The beans were cold and the bread was standard white. The Coors Lights were...Coors Lights. So the bill was close to a hundie and the product was worth a bit less.

I ate here for the first time last weekend. The food was absolutely amazing! I had the filet and baked potato. The potato was huge and perfectly cooked. The filet was melt in your mouth delicious. It is pricey but so worth it! I highly recommend Lil Abner's!

Lil Abners reminds me of a vintage wooden roller coaster. It looks unsafe, but only adds to the charm. Graffitti covers almost every wall, inside and out, with exceptions left for rusting antiques, ages old business cards, and a collection of vanity or rare license plates from across the United States. Dim lighting probably covers up even more frightening blights, but just enough to see that the mens and ladies restrooms are fashioned to look just like outhouses (they're more spacious inside, but not necessarily any cleaner). Heck, in spite of appearances, I'd have given Lil Abners 5 stars except that it was missing the one touch a ribs joint needs: peanut shells covering the floor. Lil Abners also lacks menus - not that it needs them. The waitress explained that they simply had chicken, ribs (pork or beef), and steak, with beans, bread, and baked potatoes for sides. And a full bar. As far as bbq joints go, sometimes the more rustic a place looks the better the food tastes... and Lil Abners is no exception. The beef ribs were almost too perfect, nearly slipping off the bone and back to my plate before hitting my lips. I had a taste of my guest's dinners as well - the filet was among the best I've ever had, and the pork ribs were just as tasty as the beef ribs. So tasty, in fact, that I barely noticed that each of our plastic plates were scarred from countless previous uses. I chose an apple cobbler for dessert - because there is no better bbq dessert than cobbler - and even though I was already stuffed, was just as satisfying as the rest of the meal. Of course, with this sort of place, you pay for the genuine atmosphere and good taste. Even without a liquor tab, the bill for 4 of us was well over $100. If I was local to Tucson, I don't know if I'd make Abners a regular stop, but would definitely be a place to take any ribs loving visitor.

I absolutely love this place. In my opinion, it's the best steakhouse in Arizona. I don't need the high falutin atmospheres of the fancy places, I just want a good steak. Lil Abners does it well. My wife and I typically get the ribeye and the pork ribs. However, the chicken is also amazing. It can get pretty loud when they have a band playing. The staff has always been friendly and fun. The grill is an impressive piece as well.

If you are visiting Tucson, this is a MUST see. Best ribs I have EVER had! The BBQ sauce is to die for. The place is authentic and the decor rocks. Check out the bathrooms too, they're a trip. I love the fact that you can get a good steak or chicken and you don't have to deal with the fanciness of upscale steakhouses. There are no menus, it's all verbal. I highly recommend the ribs, you won't be sorry.

Wow what a cool place. Little hole in the wall out in Tucson that serves some great BBQ. Rib eyes and Porterhouse steaks that melts in your mouth so good. You get a ton of food. Beans, Bread, Salad, what more could you want. Price is higher than expected but food and service (hot waitresses) you can't go wrong.

Love this place! My parents live in Tucson and my husband & I make them take us here every time we visit. It's shabby-sheik atmosphere combined with it's old country live band make it a very unique dinning location. The menu is limited but that kind of adds to it's appeal. Excellent food, great entertainment makes this place a must see for anyone visiting the Tucson area. When I think Tucson, I think Lil Abners!

  • Troy W.

Very good quality meat. Ambiance is interesting. A bit run down but that is the charm of the place. No menus which is interesting but if you just have to have a really good steak then this place is a must as the quality of the beef is out of this world. Also, they have an awesome patio dining area with live music and fireplaces.

Interesting place, but, the food is a little overpriced, and a little overrated. I've eaten there about a half dozen times. Was once served a steak there that appeared to have blue fat on it. Sent it back only to find out that the blue crap was a USDA inspector's stamp. They cooked and served it anyway, and didn't think twice about it. WTF!

I moved from Cali to Tucson about 14 years ago and found lil abners by mistake. I am by no means a steak person prefer chicken but this place is fantastic!!! It is not a high end fancy, frilly place. It's your mom and pop take the family to a nice dinner place. You can meet some very interesting people here. I currently live in the Phoenix area but travel to Tucson whenever I have family visit so we all can visit abners. The food is great, the servers great, the atmosphere great. The prices are a bit on the high end but the food is quality and the whole experience is worth it. Go in your Sunday best or shorts and flip flops you will not be disappointed.

This place has got charm, that is for sure. I am writing this review off of one experience so please keep this in mind. I wanted to try this place so badly ever since my mother brought me back a tshirt about five years ago, she said it was fantastic. I recently went there and was and ordered the one pound (yes, one pound) t-bone because I thought that the two pound porterhouse was overkill. My girlfriend ordered the beef ribs. Our food was brought out in short order but I was very disappointed to see that the steak was almost all fat and gristle. I do understand you can expect that with a t-bone but not that much, it made me wish I ordered the porterhouse. The part that was edible was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. My girlfriends ribs were burnt and had a funny taste which is also disappointing. We ordered a slice of pecan pie to share, only to find out that it wasn't a big enough of a piece for one of us and it was $5!!! That piece of pie was comically small. All in all, dinner for two with no alcoholic drinks, and slice of pie with tip was $85. I think that it was overpriced for what we got but the atmosphere is great. They had live music which was a band comprised of three 70+ year old senior citizens playing classic country, it was fantastic. You should definitely give it a try if you are local or if you are a tourist like I was. Your experience will probably be different....

We didn't see what all the fuss was about. Too expensive for what you get. You would figure they would know how to cook a $30 steak but had to send mine back overcooked. When the waitress brought my new one she put the plate down and left without waiting to see it the second one was okay. Four people, $180.00 bill and you'll never see us back. Just way overpriced for both food and service.

Best steak in all of Tucson without a doubt. Fun to go to as well due to the fact that it used to be a speak easy and they have not changed it since those times. All you can eat beans and bread are delish as well. People are always nice. If you are lucky, you will get there on a live music night. The price is right as well.

I love Lil' Abner's so much. So. Much. I always get the small fillet and it never disappoints me. So juicy, and just the right amount of pink/red in the middle if you like medium-rare. If you love red meat, go here. If you are a vegetarian, do not go here. The beans and bread are good, but seriously just go for the meat. The staff has always been very friendly and quick to help when I've been. Make sure you bring a marker to sign the walls! It is also a little pricey, so if dad is in town tell him he'd love it.

Visiting Tucson for the first time, my wife and I wanted to try a mesquite western steakhouse. Let me just say, this was our worst restaurant experience of our six day Tucson visit-- this restaurant's service was absolutely terrible, with a long wait of 50 minutes (yet not crowded at the time) to get our food and a totally inattentive waitress who almost seemed to be ignoring us intentionally. The barbecued ribs and chicken we ordered tasted like it came off of a grill that was rarely cleaned of grease accumulation. I'm writing this review hours later and I can still taste the grease. Mediocre and over-priced for what you get. Oh, did you know there's no printed menu? They give you a "verbal menu" at the table- no prices given. We needed to look up the "menu" on the website with our cell phones. This is a steakhouse without the house. Think "eatery", not "restaurant" here. This dinner was memorable-- in a very bad way.

This is THE STEAKHOUSE to go to in the greater Tucson area ! Situated in Northwest Tucson in between the Suburban Neighborhoods of Continental Ranch and Continental Reserve Lil Abner's stands as a beacon the Desert wrapped by Mountains Tucson once was. When you drive into the gravel and dirt parking lot you look at an establishment that could of once been a barn,,, in fact, i think it was once a pony express stop... it has been here over a century. This place has loads of character and charm. From the picnic tables and the wagon wheel mesquite grill, to the live music and pitchers of draft fat tire you feel off in another world. The menu is straightforward, so much so they don't bother to write it down. Steak, Chicken, or Ribs served with Beans, Salad, Toast, and Salsa with A La Carte Baked Potatoes if you choose. The food is hearty, like what you might eat at the end of a day long cattle drive. In short this is a destination restaurant, it is well worth the trip to come dine this unique experience!

Dined at the restaurant on Tuesday evening, 10/19/10. Ordered the 8oz sirloin plus the add-on half rack of ribs. Service was slow. When the entree finally arrived, the steak was cooked well done, not medium rare as ordered. When the mistake was pointed out, the cook apologized and quickly made a replacement steak that was cooked correctly. The ribs and the steak were very good to excellent. The baked potato, salad, beans, bread and salsa were fine: nothing special. I love the outdoor theme seating and the grill-and-cook right before your eyes. I will be back.

I've only had the filet mignon....it is delicious! Along with the texas style garlic bread and beans....YUM!

There is no menu. They have Steak, Ribs and Chicken, they serve garlic bread and beans with it, and you can get a baked potato if you want. When I heard this, I got very excited, then worried it was getting my hopes up too much. Then I got excited again, and still was blown away. Jesus god this place is tasty. It's a beat up looking western steak restaurant way way out northwest. I had the t-bone steak and it was awesome. Second best steak I've ever had in my life. I also tried the beef ribs, which were falling off the bone and pretty good, although I liked the steak more. Don't get a baked potato, you won't have room or time. You can eat inside or outside. It loses a star for being so expensive. The dinners are around 18-22 bucks. You do get a lot of food, but not that much.

For great steaks or ribs this is the place!! Definitely not like a chain steakhouse where all the steaks taste the same!! No paper menus all verbal instructions..pretty neat. Entrees are served with cowboy beans, texas toast, and small salad and for a bit extra a baked potato. The ribeye and t-bone steaks were awesome. The baby back pork ribs, fall off the bone tender, needed no sauce and the flavor was outstanding. If the weather is nice there is outdoor dining where you can really enjoy the mesquite grill smell. The inside dining is unique with graffiti lining the walls of the various visitors that have frequented the establishment. On the weekends there are Country Bands and Sunday evenings is Blue Grass music. I would recommend everyone try this restaurant!

For not being a big meat eater the place was good. No alternatives but meat. Kind of far out from our hotel by the airport. I had 2 pieces of pecan pie for dessert. That was a first.

They do not have a written menu for a reason, if you would see the ridiculous prices, you would walk away immediately. They have decent steaks, but for nearly $40 for a steak it is ridiculous, when you have to pay additional for a potato. Also all the additional stuff (salat, drinks, etc), is really cheapo type, so it is surely not worth the money. Avoid this place, unles you want to feel stupid, when they hit you with the bill.

I still salivate when I think about this place. My parents would bring my brother and me here for our birthdays or for getting good grades when we were kids. The western barbeque is amazing, and the portions...it's like getting half of a cow on one's plate. When I was youinger, we would have to drive way out in the middle of the desert, and suddenly, this magical place would appear off the road. Apparently it's all built up with track homes now, which is sad. The food is still great though.
