If you are super hungry and looking for huge portions of American breakfast, this could be your spot. The service and kitchen is not the fastest. Most of people sits down at the table when there are still dishes from the previous customers. We sat in the back room around Sunday 11am-ish and had to wait for almost 30 minutes before we got the order in. But for the food, they do come in huge portions. One single pancake could fill you up. I got the corned beef hash and I had it for 3 different meals before they were all gone haha

This place isn't quite a coffee destination, but they certainly do breakfast! You'll find your standard breakfast menu items. I'm an eggs and bacon type of gal and really, you can't go totally wrong with that choice. Lavernas delivers on good breakfast fare. Service can be hit or miss, but overall a traditional and down home choice in the Old Pueblo.

Although the service was friendly and prompt, the food was very disappointing. It did not have much flavor and was uninspiring. I wouldn't say it was bad, but just not what I was expecting based on the reviews of this place. Would likely still give them a second chance by trying something different.

Okay food, sarcastic waitresses. Got the food relatively fast. Floors looked like they haven't been cleaned in ages. So if you're looking for a morning insult and okay food for an okay price, this is the place for you!

The first good sign I got was that the place was packed when I walked in. Good food always keep the crowds coming. The second sign was that I had a cupful of coffee in front of me not two minutes after I took a seat at the bar, right between a couple of regulars, one of them chatting with the staff while the other one scanned the newspaper. Classic diner atmosphere. I was reminded that I was indeed back in the US when my order of mushroom omelets and hash browns looked like it could feed a whole family. Then there was the pair of biscuits drowning in a small sea of gravy. Yum. Luckily, I was famished and had plenty of time to kill. Needless to say, the staff was very attentive and service was prompt. The food itself was not out of this world but it was just what I needed at the time and incredibly inexpensive. I would go back there without a question, if only to try those ginormous pancakes and French toasts I gawked at on their way out of the kitchen. I'll just make sure to bring my family with me next time.

Shhhhh! don't tell anybody! Great food, huge portions, low price and it opens at 5:30 AM. OMG! It's everything Shoes could ask for. The staff is great too. I stopped in for a cup of Joe at about 9:30 in the morning. The place was packed and yet they took time to talk to this lowly traveller. Locals keep the place busy. I showed up as soon as they opened the next morn for bfast had an omelette. Oooh weee! I'm going back!

Regular diner atmosphere. We were surprised that the service was so poor. We got coffee refills once and then no one asked. Eggs over easy were hard, both whites and yolks. Inedible. Our waitress never bothered to check with us about the food.

I can't ding this place just because it didn't turn me on. Everyone else there seemed to love it and it was packed. I went specifically based on a positive review of their blueberry pancakes. It was huge. It had lots of blueberries BUT it was so thick it wasn't really a pancake...it was more like a cake with cake-like flavor and consistency. Not what I was looking for. Also there was no butter on it and when I asked for butter I got a handful of country crock containers - not butter. I didn't like the vibe there at all. Waitresses were so stressed out they were grouchy and making excuses. The place is a dark, dingy hole. Just not for me.

  • Rena B.

It's really disappointing, because the food is excellent, but the waitress was horrible. She was grumpy and slow. I asked her for creamer for my coffee and she said she would only be able to get to me in ten minutes. She was not joking!!!!

My husband and I love eating breakfast at Laverna's. The service is incredibly fast and always friendly Despite the full house! We enjoy an early breakfast about 7 am usually. But many locals do. So Laverna's is always crowded. The eggs are cooked as ordered so you heaver have to worry about undercooked or overcooked whites or yolks. They now have turkey sausage patties. Delicious. Omelette are flavorful and you have several choices including custom made. There high - 4 eggs! Fluffy. You need to get hungry to order that breakfast. Usually takes 2 to eat an order of pancakes. If you bring children don't order 1 serving or child. They'll go to waste. Unless you want to assist :) you can't go wrong with anything you order. Coffee is excellent as is the fresh brewer iced tea. Thank goodness it's unsweetened! (the only thing is they should go back to using real butter for the toast) but what there using isn't bad and I'm picky about that)

If not for Yelp, I am certain I would never have found Laverna's. At least not for another number of years. First of all, what an obscure location for a diner. It seems like Laverna's was built first, then an industrial complex grew up around her. But, with her gritty, direct attitude and persona, it is fitting that she would be located just where she is. Laverna's seems like it would be a popular spot for mechanics (arriving still with grease-stained hands) and blue-haired ladies wearing frilly tops. Apparently, it is also quite popular with the UA crowd - especially students. And that's probably because this home cooking spot gives ample servings. Ample is probably not strong enough a word. Expect that one egg is going to look and feel like two eggs. Maybe 2.5. Serving sizes are massive. So, the verdict? The food is pretty good. Not especially distinctive. I wanted eggs Benedict, but learned that it is only served on the weekends. Ended up going with what turned out to be a heaping plate of eggs and potatoes. I couldn't finish off the meal. Also, the service is forgetful, but cordial. I got the sense that the servers were a bit maxed out. But they kept in pretty good spirits during the morning rush and while serving the two dining rooms. Oh! And there is also an AYCE fish fry on Fridays. Cool bit: The restaurant has local businesses cards as decorations on the tabletops. Sweet!

When I walked in it seemed like a meek little place. For being a "coffee shop" there wasn't much to the coffee side of things. The food came out in large portions and HOT! Our waitress didn't engage in much conversationuntil she heard my buddy and I talking about the shooting with the camera crew on the east coast. Then it felt like the so became alive.

Imagine sitting on death row...(horrible thought I know but stuck with me) and you got one last meal, what would it be? For me it would be the Spanish Omlette with Homefries and a GIANT sugar pancake from Laverna's. The salty deliciousness of their giant omlette with golden brown Homefries (cowboy potatoes) countered by the sweetness of their huge hotcakes is the perfect balance of opposites. Their pancakes are nothing short of perfection. They have a huge selection of options for add-ins. While the plain pancakes are good...spend the extra few dollars and do it right. You can add fruits, chocolate chips, and/or nuts. The best of the combos is banana chocolate chip with pecans and crisp sugar top. I can say this with confidence because when my family was in town visiting me we went to Laverna's a total of 5 times in the span of a week and a half....a little excessive I know...but their food really is that good. Their portion sizes = Hulk Taste = Heavenly Service = grumpy There are only 2 drawbacks....they're only open until 2 pm (except Friday) and the service is a little on the grumpy side. However these are easily overlooked because you get the local exclusive feel of finding the best greasy spoon in Tucson combined with AMAZING pancakes!

I give this restaurant 4 stars only because the seating and size of it is limited and the extra seating in the back was not visible, the chairs wobble and the walls need cleaning. But the food is most definitely very delicious! The pancakes are the best I have ever had but only order one because it is HUGE. The chorizo and eggs are fresh tender, flavorful and not over cooked. The food comes out quick even though the place is packed. Even though I live in the NW side, I will certainly go out if my way to come and eat here again.

The food is fine, the price is right, but...it smells funky. Sorry, guys. Wish I could say something better, but ya'll got a funky smell up in there.

Today's visit was different. We were seated in the back room and then , after we three had placed our orders, the rest of the world came. The back room had 2-3 "four tops". The. rest were in large multiples. There were 4-5 of these. We had ONE waitress! She did a good job but didn't look our way after my friends' banana-pecan pancakes had been delivered , long after my French San order came to me. A gentleman at a neighboring " multiple" came to give my coffee-drinking friend coffee from their carafe because the waitress never looked at our raised hands... I went to the front, paid my bill and asked for two to-go boxes to take back to my friends.. Not a good day there... BUT, please note that we will return and will SHARE the banana-pecan pancake!!!

  • Ashley J.

Absolutely amazing! Best pancakes in town (get the flavored pancakes instead of the plain - the carmelized fruit is life-changing!!!) You get an incredible amount of food for way cheap! Such a great deal! I also appreciate LARGE sized glasses for juice! I always hate paying $5 for a tiny cup of juice at other restaurants, but even their juice is reasonable! Nothing bad to say about this place!

My boyfriend and I tried this place on his landlord's suggestion two weekends ago for Sunday morning breakfast. Both of us went "really?" when we drove up and walked in, but again at his landlord's suggestion we asked about the specialty pancakes which are oddly missing from the menu. We both had the banana pecan pancake (singular, per our server's suggestion). It was HUGE and OMG SO AMAZING! Didn't need butter, syrup, or anything. The bananas and pecans were cooked right into the pancake (slices of the banana that tasted like they had been sauteed in butter, cinnamon and brown sugar) and the outside of the pancake had some caramelization on it that was just delicious! Also had some bacon and my boyfriend had eggs. Was so good we're going back this coming weekend and planning to order the same exact thing. I do not know the owners nor did I receive any kind of freebee ... I think those people accusing the positive reviews of being fakes are pretty jaded people. Everyone has opinions and that is what yelp is all about. In our opinion, the banana pecan pancakes at Laverna's earns 5 stars. Our server was friendly and pleasant, as well. If you're looking for a restaurant that is fancy looking, don't come here. It is definitely a greasy spoon/coffee shop looking place, and the prices reflect that. Very nondescript. But if you can look past the appearance of the place, the food is pretty darn good especially for the price.

  • Rosanne C.

The pancakes were the highlight, for sure! We got the banana with pecan ones and they have this layer of caramelized crust--delicious! The sausage patty was also very good--I think they might have made it. Also, the pancakes are HUGE--I could only finish half of one and I love my food. The place was clean, and gave this "road side diner" vibe, and our server was very friendly. The only reason I hesitated on giving 5 stars was the home fries--just, ew. Pick another side because those babies were burnt and not well-seasoned.

Thank you, yelpers, for tipping me onto the banana pecan pancakes! I didn't see them on the menu, but was able to order them. AMAZING!! Thick, with cinnamon-butter bananas and a slightly caramelized crust. Served hot. YUM. I tried to order two, as my roommate and I were splitting pancakes and an egg dish, but the server suggested just one, and she was right. These pancakes are twice the size of your face. We ended up taking some home. DON'T MISS THESE. We had the giant pancake, and two sausages (really tasty!), two eggs, a giant biscuit, home fries, and a coffee, all for $11. The two of us were stuffed, with leftovers! That's what I call a Tucson steal. Service was genuinely friendly and attentive. I think I got called "hon." And NO wait on a Saturday morning around 10:45! The downsides were the home fries (overcooked, dry, lacking seasoning), the eggs (needed seasoning), and the coffee (weak--and coming from a blonde roast wimp like me, that's saying something!). Otherwise, this is a real, off-the-beaten-path local find. A fun stop afterwards is to pop in Betty Blue's Junk Shop, just across the street.

I have been to this coffee shop a handful of times now, and it continues to be hit or miss for me. The first couple times I went I was hooked. The food was delicious, the service was great and the people were friendly. The server that I had was so kind, funny, and great at her job! However, the last few times I have been the food was just ok and the service was very slow. One particular visit I waited over 15 minutes before I even saw my server to get a drink, my food was cold, and my toast was stale. I think that the cafe needs to hire more staff. This is one of those places that I want to love because of the friendly service, but without more people on staff, this place is going to remain less than mediocre.

I've been here twice, with a co-worker who loves it, the only reason I give it 3 stars is because she swears its never as bad as the two times we've gone. Both of my visits were terrible, the first experience was with an awful waitress who chastised us for asking for substitutions - she also reeked of cigarette smoke. The second time, the waitress was a lot better, but the food took about 45 minutes to come out. The food is okay very - cafeteria style food, very reasonably priced. Again, my co-worker swears that she always has great experiences...so many it was just an off day...twice.

Stopped in this morning for breakfast before heading back to Tempe. The place is much bigger on the inside than meets the eye, and it has cute/random deco that makes it look like your grandma's house. We had a seat in the back and were immediately met by a server who grabbed our drinks and took our orders. Everything on the menu is super cheap, and I got the sausage and eggs with hash browns and biscuits and gravy. I went to the powder room and when I came back there it was! It was super huge and I had my doubts I could finish it. I forgot to ask for the biscuit gravy on the side so I sort of just dabbled with that, but the eggs/sausage/hash browns were good. A little on the dry side, but nothing serious. Plus the water was really good. Ever go to a restaurant that has shitty water? Not here, I was just slightly bummed that no one ever came by to refill my glass. In total, my meal was $6 and even though I couldn't finish it all, it was totally worth it.

I definitely prefer Laverna's over Bobo's just because of the shorter wait time and distance from campus; aside from that, it also has a stronger diner feel. The pancakes are delicious and ginormous, and the prices are great. They always give you way more than your stomach possibly can handle. This is the typical greasy diner fare so if you're looking for something classy and healthy, you will have better luck at The Good Egg instead. They often have Restaurant.com gift certificates, which makes this place even more worth. Perfect for a lazy weekend morning.

Pretty amazing place, though you wouldn't know it from the outside. Nice employees, clean restrooms, they give customers alot of options on their menu, and have fantastic prices for what they serve. Honestly, I don't believe I've had any of their lunch items because of enjoying their breakfast so much. Great omeletts, phenomenal pancakes, and you won't want to miss the bacon.

  • Steven R.

Not bad at all.but not great. The gravy on my chicken fried steak went right through me! I'd go back, but probably just for the basics: bacon and eggs.

  • Bryan K.

In all seriousness the positive reviews of this place are fakes I think. Really sad food. Huge servings of tasteless pancakes. It's like they cook everything without oil so it's all rubberized. It looks pretty, but you have to wrangle the food down. Biscuits and gravy was literally just a wheat dinner role with (decent) gravy poured over it. Don't believe the hype!

This is an excellent locally owned business and is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Tucson. Lavernas has the best huevos rancheros (and possibly salsa) in town. The food is very reasonably priced and the waitresses are always smiling.

Hubbs and I came here the first time on a recommendation of some friends from church. The first time we ate here we both got omelets and a banana pecan pancake to share. Good Lord, so much food!! We have been there several times since then and have learned to order a smaller breakfast with the pancake. Most of the food is always good and I would have given 5 stars but there have been a few misteps such as the hashbrowns and the hamburger patty that I had this morning. Hashbrowns had no flavor and the hamburger patty was not homemade and it had an odd flavor. The wait staff is excellent at making sure our breakfast experience was good and coffee was filled up regularly. We love this place!!!

Absolutely loved this diner! I went here after searching for a good place for Chorizo and Eggs and it was awesome. The staff is super friendly and attentive, the service was speedy, and the chorizo and eggs with a side of the house potatoes tasted great...the best I've had in Tucson. So glad I found this gem. :)

Dirty dishes on all the empty tables when we walked in, yet we were invited to sit wherever we like and they would clean the table for us. We ended up placing the dishes on our table the next table and cleaning the table with the rag left on our table, which also got placed on the next table. Maybe you can see where I am going with this. If you can't... well then I just don't know what other guidance I can offer. That being said, I was ogling the what-looked-like-a-pecan-pancake monstrosity on the table next to us (there WERE still people at that that table) and uttering," Wow". I'm more of a savory sort of breakfast person but, boy, did it look good. I ended up with the CBH ~n~ eggs... for the breakfast menu impaired, that's the corned beef hash and eggs. Not the best I have had. I was wishing for more crispiness in the hash itself, but the eggs were cooked perfectly and the home fries were on point. I substituted tortilla for toast, which they were happy to do. Wife had the hamburger patty and eggs with a log of hash browns... I'll try that next time. She couldn't eat it all... dainty eater that she is. Overall, your standard breakfast place. Well not quite, they had menudo on the special board. You don't see that at IHOP. So basically, a local place dishing up standard breakfast fare with a local twist... check it out.

Service was pretty slow considering the server to costumer ratio. Food was A+. Biscuits and gravy was a meal in itself. Best I've had in Tucson but I haven't had everywhere. You could actually taste the onions in the gravy which I love. Gets a 4 star though due to the service. It will definitely fill you up. Less than $20 for my wife and I and neither of us finished our meals.

I like sitting at the counter, you can see the kitchen. Feels like home. :) This is one of my favorite breakfast spots. They are open as early as 5:30AM so you know how devoted they are to making your breakfast as good as it gets. Whenever I come (I usually go solo) to laverna's, I always sit at the counter because I like to see the kitchen action; plus, the lady waitresses are super nice and friendly. I had two items so far; the Pan San and the French San. The pan san is super yummy because the pancakes occupy the whole entire plate. Each order comes with two pancakes but they are so big -- the waitress just suggested one for me. Thank goodness she did because I barely finished the one pancake. The sausages patties I ordered with the eggs were piled on top of the pancakes. Lol. I've heard from other yelpers that the bananas and walnut pancakes are delish! No syrup needed. Also, the blueberries one, too. Must get. However, since I ordered the French San -- I fell in love. The French toasts are one of the best I have ever tasted. Maybe I haven't tried a bunch of French toasts in my lifetime; but from the ones I have tried, this is by far the best. I, personally, prefer sausages over bacon (I know it must be a sin or something lol) but I like their sausage links rather than their sausage patties. It is a must try! I like my usual waitress, Susan; she is super friendly and nice. I love their service because they are pretty fast. The food comes out just right. I don't know, Laverna has left me speechless. It's a must try!

The service was amazing, friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and DELICIOUS! the prices are decent and the portions are humongous. Very interesting little coffee shop. It kind of feels like you are in someone's basement but why the hell are all these other people there with you? As far as the food is concerned: the corned beef hash is quite good, because I think it is made in house with onions but still maintains that perfect from-a-can hash texture. The hash browns, similarly, are served in a kind of crispy loaf, but on the inside they have the texture of mashed potatoes. This is weird for me, as I am always on the search for the best hashbrowns (the verdict is Poco and Mom's BTW). So I was thrown off. Kind of more like a latke than a hashbrown. Also, really good biscuits and gravy (for Tucson), though the gravy is salty. The coffee is decent. The price is definitely right. You won't be paying more than 7.00 for breakfast here.

One of the best greasy spoons in Tucson. Lots of space, good menu, sassy wait staff make for an enjoyable experience. The portions are large, the food is cheap and tasty. what's not to like?

My wife just had an excellent breakfast. Wife had hash brown, eggs over easy, corned beef hash AND biscuits and gravy. The gravy was bad ass. I kept reaching over to eat her gravy with her hash browns or my toast. I ordered the Spanish omelet which was huge with sliced tomatoes and toast. Very good omelet and it was a monster. Both meals were 6.75 and worth every penny. Next time I want to binge I am coming here and ordering gravy on everything.

I recommend Laverna's to all our friends and co-workers. Their breakfasts are outstanding - perfectly cooked omelets - never greasy, never runny, never over-done, home fries are perfect. The chorizo and eggs is a fantastic meal - I usually substitute the refrieds with home fries and use the included flour tortilla for my own burrito. Really friendly wait staff - we're there once almost every weekend

I have lived in Tucson for 23 years and never heard of this place, but when I asked friends for an inspired breakfast suggestion for the UA side of town, Laverna's was unanimous. The decor is antique-kitsch. My personal favorite was a life-size portrait of a UA softball team on a blanket covering a side room's wall. The waitresses were all smiley and friendly and the regulars joked with my friends and I, which made the atmosphere very pleasant. As for the food, I ordered a Spanish omelet sans ham which was flavorful and huge, and substituted my toast/biscuits & gravy for a blueberry pancake. The pancake was enormous, and I had heard hotcakes were a specialty, but I was disappointed. The pancake was quite rubbery and flavorless. Maybe they use a butter substitute to help us to be health-conscious, but when I'm ordering a pancake the size of my face, I generally prefer it to be oozing buttery deliciousness. My dining companions had a Denver omelet (declared superb) and a breakfast burrito which came in pieces that she then piled into the tortilla herself. The waitress later giggled at her and informed us that if we wanted our breakfast burrito in a burrito, we had to make note of it on the ticket. This left us all a little dumbfounded, because wouldn't that be implied when one ordered a "breakfast burrito?' She wasn't rude about it, but it still struck us as a strange process. The only other issue was that our check took a good 20 minutes to get to us and by that time, our full bellies were sending us all into food comas. Overall, I would go again for an omelet, but I would probably be more likely to hit up one of the many other breakfast joints around.

How can I have lived in Tucson for over 20 years and never even know that this place existed? Probably because it's down a side street off of Broadway, where I have never had a reason to go. Until now that is. First off, the interior of Laverna's is a little cutesy for my taste (lots of "antiques" on wooden shelves, painted plaques with words of wisdom on them), but it was very, very clean. Take it from someone who has seen plenty of greasy spoons in her day, this was a really nice surprise. Even the bathroom was spotless! We went to Laverna's specifically for the breakfast, and were not disappointed. My husband had the chorizo and eggs, along with a side of the homemade menudo. He gave a big thumbs up to both. I ordered a blueberry pancake (thank God I didn't try for two, because it was enormous), and I must say that it was the best one I've had in a long while. Better even than Bobo's, which is kind of famous for their pancakes. All the food was reasonably priced, and service was friendly and quick. I really like that they open early (5:30 Monday throught Friday, 7am on Sunday), because sometimes we like to go out for a very early breakfast. If it wasn't do damn far from ours house, Laverna's might be a new favorite. Give it a try.

Stopped here for the first time yesterday morning for breakfast. Sunday morning with the normal regulars evidently, and a load of hot rodders made this a busy place. No problem though, there is enough staff to handle a 'slam' and they did just that this morning. I tried the ham steak and eggs - 1/2" thick slice of ham and home fries, two eggs and SD. very good. My wife had a sausage and cheese omelet, requested to be not overly cooked and it came as ordered - also very good. Some interesting sandwich choices on the menu will get me to return, such as a beef and chili sandwich on texas toast sounded good. Definitely a place to go especially if you are hungry, lots of food and good prices. Atmosphere is truck-stop-ish, clean and eclectic.

I have so many wonderful memories here. This place reminds me of Sunday brunch at Grandma's house, which is actually quite convenient because the restaurant looks like it's been built from literally an old house. The portions are very generous, and the food is inexpensive. But most importantly, the menu is DELICIOUS. I've brought countless friends here, and no one has been disappointed. I love their biscuits drizzled in honey. Love. The staff is also so friendly and warm, and I just can't say enough about them. The service is fast and efficient, and you can see that this place is almost always packed -- they can get people in and out very quickly. Lots of smiling faces. I'm not a morning person, but for Laverna's, I will wake up. ;)
