Good food and great service for a good price. Defiantly a nice restaurant to go to without having to get to dressed up.

Wanted to try a new Mexican place since we've been everywhere in Oro valley. This was only ok. The service was good and they had a lot of regulars since the staff knew their names but it just wasn't worth the drive out there. The bean dip was terrible and the waitress that delivered it didn't even know what it was bc she said no ones ever orders it. The kids however did like their bean burritos. The salsa was good.

We stopped here for the convenience of the location and good yelp reviews as we headed out of town. Service and food were both good but not great. Everything seemed to need a little extra salt so if your watching sodium this place would rate a 5 star. My kids shared the ground beef nachos and loved them!! 5 stars for the nachos! Chili tornado was good per hubby. My chili verde was more of a gravy than stew but the shredded Beef in it was great, lean and tender. A must here is to order the habanero hot sauce with your meal yowzer!! Thank you Ricardo for asking!!!

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this restaurant, which doesn't look like much from outside. However, when they set down the chips you can tell they're freshly made in-house, and it just goes on from there. I enjoyed a flat enchilada, which tasted like crispy fried cornbread. Even my stepdaughter's quesadillas were clearly made on homemade tortillas and tasted amazing. Hubby ate a large number of shrimp wrapped in bacon, which probably need no further explanation. My father-in-law had regular enchiladas, which I did not taste, or ask him about, but his plate was completely clean at the end of the meal. The only thing that didn't go over well was stepson's green chile tamale, which was very dry and very sweet. Fortunately, there was plenty of food and he had a little off everyone else's plate and was fine.

These guys get 5 stars on their service alone. We were initially seated next to a group including a very loud woman. Our waiter must have seen us flinch every time she brayed. Shortly and without being asked he came by and reseated us unobtrusively. Total pro. The other server was lovely. Salsa and chips were well above average, the meals were solid to very good and the flan was the best we have had in the US (my own included). This was recommended by the two young men at the local feed store. They knew what they were talking about.

Bland food, bland and plasticky atmosphere. Forgettable.

Great food and attention to customers, even new ones like me. When my surgery finished and we were on our way back to Apache Junction the service was healing.

I tend to believe that an individual's rating, whether high or low, is likely based on expectation. Upon entering Carlotas one is forced to intake a pummeling of cheap decoration that strain to make you think 'authentic Mexican food'. If this isn't quite enough to satisfy your need for the 'cheap authentic' experience well fret not, they also pipe in some cheesey Mexican music right down to the guy doing the aye yay yay's like his pinkie toe has been caught in a vice grip. Ugh! Once your food arrives, you'll be able to see past all of the weak attempts at authenticity because the food is delicious! The service is adequate and the lady attempted to befriend by using negative platitudes like 'big fella' with me. Regardless, she took the order and delivered the food in a semi competent fashion and that counts for something. My spouse asked if sour cream and guacamole came with her order and was told yes; however, upon delivery of her dinner she wS informed those items would cost an additional $4. While not a big deal, it is a nuisance type issue. The server saw that I sat cash on the table to pay the bill with and hovered about the table until which time that she could pick up the money. She assured me that she would return briefly with my change, but that was the last we saw of her. Since she had absconded with a paltry few dollars instead of returning with my rightful and correct change, she determined her tip tonight, not I. That is a bad habit to start in my opinion, give your customers their change! Overall, great food and so so everything else.

Had the chili verde. Shredded beef with green chilis onions etc. nice gravy very tasty. Tortillas fresh, beans also very good. The salsa is fresh and chunky. My wife had the carnitas plate. Pork was very good. Happy hour import beer 2.25 until 6pm. Definitely will put this place on our regular list. Hard to find good Mexican food in Oro Valley this place is easily the best.

Ordered 4 breakfast burritos to go on a busy Sunday morning. Tortillas were fantastic, fillings generous, and salsa was fresh. We will call and order ahead next time .

I'm not happy The tacos are not the same. The shells are disgusting! Completely soggy, they fell apart. I got take out and got there right when they brought the food out, and came right home to eat. Its like they were sitting for a long time. My boyfriends toco shell did not fall apart. He got gowned beef, but it smelled and tasted stale. The rice was stale. So sad I thought I found a Mexican restaurant close to the house. $20 I will never get back. The first time I went I liked the tacos, they were deep fried and seemed more authentic to me. The second time I went I got the Carlota's salad, it was ok. The lettuce part (spring mix) was kind of wilted. I'm done no more money from me.

Carlota's mi casa su casa vibe makes my day The atmosphere was so inviting as a server on the patio smiled at me as I walked up as if to say make yourself at home Ricardo greeted me and i had a beer at the bar because I wasn't sure what to order he assured to me to take my time. I came in because it was dollar beer all day on Wednesday... I have to say that Carlota's is AUTHENTIC Sonoran... and their machacha is made with dried beef/carne seca. Why drive to downtown when there is a place in Catalina that satisfies?! By the way I cook Sonoran style at home and I never go out to eat but I'm changing my ways because of the 5.95 lunch specials! Pass by the overpriced Mi Tierra and land at the soft spot of Carlota's. Ignore the old reviews... My visit was exquisite and I just moved here from Long Beach two weeks ago. Stop in and be treated like family. I certainly felt welcomed and left well fed and satisfied.

We have lived in Oro Valley for over 17 years and watched this restaurant change owners numerous times over the years. We have tried to like it because it's so convenient and we love good Mexican cuisine but, alas, on our most recent visit with this new owner, it is still not to be....... Over the years, we have NEVER had good service and only once, years ago, was the meal somewhat OK. Last night however, we waited to be seated for about 10 minutes. After being seated, our waiter gave us our silverware, said he was going to get chips and salsa and then never came back. We started timing it at 15 minutes, he still had not returned. We decided to get up and leave and incredibly, he looked at us leaving and wished us a "nice evening"! He didn't even realize we were the couple he basically forgot! Sigh......

This restaurant was fine but I probably wouldn't return, mainly because I love a good margarita and I didn't prefer theirs at all, their sweet-n-sour tasted like bad powdered lemonade mix. The chips were bland, the salsa had a nice kick (made from stewed tomatoes) but still decent. I ordered carnitas which were good however they were made like fajitas with lots of onions, green peppers and tomatoes. (maybe this is an Arizona/Tucson thing??). These vegetables were limp, not nicely grilled and seemed more like filler than a meal enhancement. The menu is huge, the wait staff incredibly friendly

Very disappointing in all respects. Margarita made with poor sour mix. One of our four meals had to be returned as it was completely cold. Quesadillas were greasy in appearance and fell apart. Chile rellanos overcooked. Bill for 4 over $60. Worst Mexican meal I've ever had.

My coworkers head here biweekly for "Ladies Lunch" and rave about it. I finally checked it out for lunch with a dozen coworkers for a going away party lunch. The staff was very friendly and was able to accommodate our large party. It boasts an atmosphere of a quaint little mom and pop cafe. The server was charming and greeted us each by name (off our work badges). Several options were presented for lunch specials featuring combos that are all fairly priced. Chips and homemade salsa are served during the wait. My lunch featured an enchilada, fresh taco, rice, and, beans. The ladies I work with swear by the quesadilla and tortilla soup lunch because it's "light and the perfect size portion".

My wife and I were in AZ for vacation and one of the reasons we were looking forward to the trip so much was the chance to have real Mexican food, not some bastardized American version. Carlota's Authentic Mexican Cuisine met that desire and went above and beyond! We stopped in on a weekday for lunch. The place was not to crowded and we were served very quickly. The server was excellent! He was able to make great suggestions and was spot on with his description of the spice. My wife had a vegetarian chimichanga and I had a combo plate with a taco, enchilada with green sauce, and a burrito. Both dishes came with rice and beans. Everything was excellent! It was the best Mexican food I have ever had. The green sauce had the right amount of sweetness but did not overpower the enchilada. My wife was so pleased that she finally found a veggie chimi with actual flavor! The chips and sauce they had as an appetizer were equally delicious and we left none after two baskets. To finish the meal we had tres leches cake. One of the best deserts I have ever tasted! You can tell it is homemade and it is prepared when you order it. If you are looking for truly tasty and authentic Mexican food go to Carlota's! It seems to be in the middle of the desert, but honestly, what is not in Arizona!

If you're looking for a low cost mexican eatery, don't look here. While it isn't really expensive, it isn't Taco Bell cheap either. Of course, the quality of the food is reflected in that as well. The tacos are great, and leave you wanting more. Two is just never enough. The burritos and chimichanga are wonderful and the fajitas are delicious and sizzling hot. They have live music on Friday and Saturday night (a Harpist on Friday and Mariachi's on Saturday), which are always fun to listen to. My only complaint is that it gets extremely busy on weekend nights and holidays. On a couple of our weekend visits, they were woefully understaffed, which resulted in unacceptable wait times (even for a mom and pop, home cooked meal). That being said, we still frequent Carlota's and usually do takeout on the busy weekends.

We stopped in at 7p on a Sunday night and they were busy. I found the carne asada to be nicely seasoned and well cooked. Service was good as well.

Very disappointed in Carlota's yesterday. The sign outside says "Taco Tuesday" so 4 of us ventured in to give it a try. It was 4pm and they weren't busy so we were seated immediately. Tthe hostess and waiter made it clear that we needed to order a side dish in addition to the dollar tacos! That's fair! Prices on the side dishes range from $2+ to $5+ and there were several options including, guacamole, rice, beans, enchilada, chile relleno, etc. Our friends ordered 2 tacos each - the waiter asked what kind of taco they wanted - ground beef, chicken or shredded beef? Since we were given the choice we made an assumption that all were included on the taco Tuesday menu. In hindsight, we should have asked but we didn't - foolishly assuming we would be told if the order didn't comply. One ordered shredded beef soft tacos, and the other ordered ground beef- fried in a hard shell. For their sides they each ordered a chili relleno @ $4.00 each. Neither ordered drinks. When their bill came it was $21 +. My husband ordered 2 ground beef tacos fried in a hard shell and an enchilada as the mandatory side. I told the waiter I would pay full-price ($3.00) for a taco- shredded beef - in a hard shell and I specifically said I did not want a side-order or the dollar tacos. The only drink ordered was one soda. Our bill came to $15.00 +! By my estimation, our bill should have been $10-11 and our friends bill should have been approximately $12-13. When we questioned the waiter on why the discrepancy we were told he thought we knew that only certain tacos were $1.00 and we didn't order those tacos. We were scammed and needless to say, we will never go back.

This place is local for us so we eat here often. The prices are reasonable, service good and the food is great MOST OF THE TIME. It seems there are 2 completely different chef's that work there. I like the garlic butter fish. (al mojo de ajo) Most time I order it I love it. Cooked properly and a nice buttery sauce. Other times (usually mid week) its like I ordered a completely different dish. Dry fish covered in burnt pieces of garlic. My family have the same complaint with the food they ordered. I just wish the food was more consistent. You never know what you're going to get.

They just opened a branch in Oro Valley, where El Burrito Patio used to be. I really like the way they updated the restaurant. Also, the menu is big and diverse. You have got to try the salsa. So good. I mean, really really really good. Everything I've ever tried is yummy. This is a kid-friendly restaurant.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
