The only reason I didn't give one star was because the chips and salsa were good. For everything else, you might as well go to Taco Bell because you'll get food just as good at 1/10th the cost. Service was mediocre at best.

Went here with some colleagues from work while visiting Tuscaloosa. Let me start this review by saying that I have lived in New Mexico most of my life and believe that nowhere does Mexican food like New Mexico. That being said, this place isn't bad. The chips and salsa were decent. I ordered the chimichanga and the server looked at me with a confused look when I asked for "red chili." She replied, "Ummm...we have cheese sauce..." OK, I guess when in Alabama, do as the Alabamians do... So the chimichanga wasn't bad at all, definitely not hot/spicy. Beans and rice were good. One of my colleagues had a steak and enchiladas and said they were good (she is from New York). The service was good, the server was attentive and made sure that we had refills. The decor in the restaurant is quite authentic and the environment is casual. One word of caution - parking in the complex is atrocious! Plan for a few extra minutes to find a parking place and park with caution!

Adorable decor, flavorful queso, good service, bland enchiladas and tacos :( I'm from Houston, though, so I'm spoiled by world-class Tex Mex. But I'll be back when I visit Tuscaloosa and want a fantastic atmosphere and tasty queso!

After reading the reviews on yelp, I was looking for any reason to give this place a 3 to not sound like I was letting this place off easy. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to. I ordered the taco salad with ground beef. The ground beef was hot, tasted oddly fresh, and was poured onto your salad as one giant thick layer of ground beef over the lettuce. The chips were alright. The salsa was great just like any other Tex-Mex place. It helps that the bar and the restaurant were lovely. The service like in any other restaurant was informative and welcoming. The only terrible thing is the parking but after a large meal, a good walk is suddenly so convenient.

I can really only recommend this place for a late lunch when you don't need to split a check (they won't). The service is slow, but the food is freakin' delicious.

I'm thoroughly disappointed with Iguana Grill. I just had an unpleasant experience where I was sitting with a group of about 20 people at lunch. The price for the substitution I requested was unreasonable to me, so I decided to just order nothing, which is what I told the waiter. I wanted to substitute shrimp for steak in an omelette and they told me it would be an additional $10. It's totally within their rights to set their own prices. No big deal to me to just skip the meal. I figured I would pay for my iced tea. My coworker thoughtfully attempted to speak with the manager about the price on my behalf, and he came to the table. She asked that my meal be comped due to the size of our group. The issue was not resolved, so when I received a plate of food long after, just as everyone else was paying their checks, I was surprised and grateful that the manager had decided to comp my meal. After I had eaten most of the plate, they brought me a check. The manager had charged me for the entree, but this time it had a discount of $5. I was rather peeved that I had cancelled my order, but they brought the food anyway, and then charged me for it with no explanation. I stopped eating immediately! But, I wanted to take the higher road, forgive, etc, so I explained to the manager that I didn't even want the food and that it had been a misunderstanding, and this time he agreed to comp the meal. Great! The second check for $10 wasn't so great. I don't believe in taking things out on waitstaff so I still tipped $3. Really pathetic, Iguana Grill. Totally uncalled for. Was the problem that they charge $10 for a substitution? No! The problem is that they were just so shady and evasive, and tricked me into paying for an overpriced meal I didn't want!

Great service, fresh Mex with an authentic Flavor profile! Price competitive. Atmosphere is a bonus!!

If I could give Zero stars to rate this establishment, I would, but I will give 1 star because the atmosphere was nice. My husband ordered some very lame bean/cheese dip. Because we were hungry, we ate some of it with their very greasy chips. Once we discovered a hair in the bean/cheese dip, we told our server. Without an apology, he took the dip away. The person who I assume was the manager came over shortly with the dip AND THE HAIR!!! To tell me that no one in their kitchen has this color of hair!!!! The food was lousy. The service was very bad. Never, ever going back, ever.

Stop at the chips and salsa. The waiter must have come back 5x to take my order before I had a chance to look at the menu. The food is mediocre. They put American cheese in the enchiladas. When I expressed that " it tastes funny" the manager wanted to challenge me instead of just helping me get something edible. The enchiladas came back, with chicken and no of any kind cheese anywhere. I am still sitting here with no fork wondering when the waiter or the manager will notice. Sad, I was looking for a decent Mexican restaurant to eat out at. This native Californian will go home and cook her own.. Again.

After reading all the bad reviews about this place I decided to give my two cents on two incidents that happened to me at this "restaurant." Now this happened back during the first year the place was open and seeing, after reading the reviews, they obviously haven't changed over the years. Incident #1) So I was going to eat here with a group celebrating a friend's birthday. My parents and I had arrived first and told the hostess how many were going to be in our group. She then informs us that because we had a certain amount of people in our group that they would not split checks. Unacceptable. There would have only been two checks: one for me and my parents and the other for my parents' friends, their daughter and her boyfriend. So guess what? They lost our business. They still wouldn't budge so we went somewhere else and ate. I had already eaten at the one in Birmingham once and also ate at this one a few times already and was not too impressed with the food so... Incident #2) I decided to give them another try about two years later with my boyfriend (now husband). We go in there and when the waiter approaches us he doesn't say anything to us; just gives us menus. My boyfriend (being the friendly person he is) tries to diffuse the situation by saying "How are you?" The idiot looks at us weirdly, like he doesn't understand what we're saying. He then leaves the table and a few minutes later another waiter shows up and he's like "Is there a problem?" Me and hubby look at each other like "What the h***?" So then we explained to him that the guy apparently didn't understand what my hubby said. So he then looks at us weird and then leaves. At this point we're like "What is going on here?" That's when another man shows up and I believe he was the manager. He wants to know what's going on so we tell him. He then asks us what we would like to drink and that's it. No "I'm sorry" or anything. This is when I start to get a bad feeling. and that's when we said "You know what? Forget it, we're leaving." And we left. And I have never sat foot in that place since. What we didn't like was the fact that the first waiter acted rudely and didn't bother greeting us when he came to the table. Then he obviously can't speak or understand a word of English so how he got hired, I'll never understand. But to have a second waiter come up and ask us "What's the problem?" like we're causing the problem? Totally unacceptable. And then for the "manager" to act like it's no big deal? Uh yeah it is. You've got waiters that don't know how to greet the customers and also can't speak English, even if it's just the basics. I never get that kind of service at the other Mexican restaurants here in town. They at least know the standard basic greetings, etc. Other people I know have had similar bad experiences here and we always say "Why is this place still around?" I'm going to warn you right now: AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE! If you want good Mexican at least go try Jalapenos or Los Tarascos. There are others that I keep hearing are good, it's just that I've never eaten at them and can't tell you myself. But just avoid this place, they NEED TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS!

For atmosphere and plenty of sitting you can't go wrong. The food is always well spiced and seasoned and the jumbo Burrito can feed a small army. Can't go wrong here. Pricing is about $8 and up.

Totally average and run of the mill Mexican food. Don't come here expecting gourmet, fusion or anything like the interior may make you expect. Expect your basics for decent prices and half-decent margaritas if you really want one. I like this place because of the ambiance and decor. It's unique and trendy, and a great place for a cheap, satisfying meal with a group of friends. There's not much in terms of stellar Mexican in Tuscaloosa, so why not go to the place that looks awesome on the inside rather than a run-down place somewhere else eating the exact same quality food?

  • Zach M.

Been here 4 times now and the food is super average but it's decently priced. Service is terrible, every time I come, busy or not it has taken at least and hour and a half to get in and out. If you are looking for good Mexican this isn't it.

Great decor and menu choices. Service was slow (Sat. lunch, so lots of shoppers) but I'd go back.

This quickly became one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Tuscaloosa. The food is stellar and very affordable. I've only sampled a few things from the menu because the chile relleno is so good that I have to order it nearly every time. Desserts are equally as appetizing. You can choose from staples such as flan, churros or the special cheesecake chimichanga plus a few more. The decor is spectacular. There are massive lamps made of baskets, metal sculptures in the walls, tables with lighting inside, etc etc etc. Great atmosphere. Now for the reasons I can't give Iguana a perfect score: 1. Service - this is hit or miss. Sometimes you'll have a great waiter who is always at hand and quick to serve you, but you're equally likely to have someone who rarely comes to the table, leaving you with dirty plates and empty glasses for an absurd amount of time. I once sat near a table that didn't get their order taken for nearly 20 minutes. That is inexcusable. 2. Groups - I said this place is not good for groups for one major reason. It is widely accepted that groups of 6+ incur a gratuity on their check, but here at Iguana you get the addition of gratuity AND the inability to pay separate checks. That's right, even if you have 15 people at a table you are required to pay on a single transaction, cash or charge. There is absolutely no reason for this and has caused many disputes in the restaurant. I know a lot of people who have sworn off going again because of the trouble they were put through because of this. Again INEXCUSABLE!!!! Hopefully this will be resolved if it hasn't already because it is starting to cost them a great deal of business. Even with the complaints, I absolutely love this restaurant and have no qualms going any time. Definitely try it out, but only if you have a small group (haha).

Nice decor! The food was fairly bland! No flavor to the retried beans or chicken chimichanga. Oh and the rice too! Peach margarita was good and salsa was ok.

You know, I've tried to give this place a chance. I have 3 Check-Ins here. But every time I leave thinking that it's just another cliche Mexican chain. It's one of those places that sits outside a mall in a really new, hip metropolitan area. Not for me. The food is tasty, the atmosphere is dark and mysterious and you never know who you're sitting next to, and the waiting staff are nice. The menu is the same as anywhere you go, and the portions are typical of a chain restaurant. Not that generous. You'll find much larger portions at the local joints. There was a really good place on Mcfarland...now there is a seafood place there...

This was my son's idea to eat here this past weekend. The most praise I can give to this place is the decor. The disco-ball-like sparkly stars dangling from the ceiling gave an eclectic Mexican city feel, and the numerous lit old wicker baskets hanging from the ceiling gave off an old west desolate town ambiance. This combination was quite unusual and I really wasn't quite sure if I was in a Cancun nightclub or a Hermosillo saloon. The fake tree growing up through the middle of one large table was unique and kinda Rainforest Cafeish. The food- to be complimentary I'll call it average. The salsa tasted like it had some sort of cleaner spilled in it. I can honestly say I've had better at Taco Bell. I was starving when I went in here so a 1 rating on food is saying alot is to be desired because I am not picky when I am really hungry. I'm giving them a 2 for their discombobulated, bipolar atmosphere.

This place was not good at all!!! Very pretty that's all they had going for them. The food was horrible!!!! Ordered fish tacos and they tasted like dirt. Steak enchiladas where a joke. The cheese enchiladas where disgusting. The waiter couldn't even read their own menu. Very overpriced!!!!!

I've been a total of about 4 times. My sister loves this place--I do not. The mexican fare is on the lower side of average, and one of the four times I went I received a dish that had inedible bits on the edges of all the corn tortillas. Blegh. So I have been avoiding this place ever since. Tuscaloosa has much better to offer. The decor: Lovely, yes, but I kind of wish they were serving some sort of asian-mex fusion food(korean bbq tacos, mmm)--something cheap, but tasty and unique in flavor--the decor is just too strange and interesting to be pair with such boring and sometimes downright untasty food. I sincerely wish they would change their menu, because the place looks great, and in a great location--but the food is bringing them down. Oh, also, the salsa--I know it's cheap, but at least make it right if you're going to add new spices into it. Mine had cilantro that was freshly added-find, that's all good and dandy, but it was just in a few clumps at the top--not mixed all the way through. It seemed like an afterthought.

Got a chance to try this place recently while visiting a cousin and friend... impression - not bad. Actually it's not the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to (*cough* - Cocina Superior, Birmingham), but the experience was a pretty good one. We didn't get 'rita'd-up, so I can't comment on the drinks - but as far as the food's concerned, the offerings were pretty tasty (although very typical - cheese, meat, refried beans, rice, etc. - no surprises there). The service was great, and the decor of the place was inviting, although with all the brightly-lit light fixtures I did feel like I was back at my high school prom, with a theme of "Enchantment Under the Stars" or something equally confusing. Despite that, though, I'd probably go back. lol Keeping it short - good food, though nothing spectacular - worth a visit and a possible revisit - welcoming atmosphere, probably ideal for large groups. Try it out -don't just listen to an out-of-towner... :)

Good place to go if you don't care about eating a good meal. Anyone that likes this place has low quality standards. Taco Casa has better food. Those that said the atmosphere was good are correct. food- average or below, drinks- cheap liquor

Really awful. My two children ordered chicken nuggets. They tasted like they'd been under a heating lamp for hours. Their French fries had no flavor. My salad, described as a bed of "mixed greens" was several day old iceberg. On the way out I told the manager about the salad, and that he needed to talk to the chef. He was still staring at the menu, saying nothing, as we left.

Their food is above average for a Mexican Restaurant. They also have some unique dishes that aren't seen on typical restaurant menus. Their quality is good and as per all Mexican restaurants, their quantity is more than substantial. A problem they often have is that their wait staff is inconsistent. Some of they waiters are slow and don't give the customer enough attention. Example: went one time and they poured water into my sprite for the refill, I informed the waitress, and the problem was never taken care of. Another time they brought out the wrong drink and after it was addressed they gave me a complimentary bean and cheese dip. So....if you go I hope you get a good waiter!

A solid take on Mexican with a flair for the over-the-top in the decor segment. I like previous reviewers' comparisons to a "gaudy prom" look around the restaurant. The chips and salsa are tasty--they generally bring out a couple different salsa flavors for the more adventurous eaters to try. Serving sizes are large, but on par with most Mexican places--plenty of rice and beans to accompany your entree. There's a decent sized patio outside that looks like a good place to sit on a pretty day (downside: it abuts the general parking lot of Midtown Village). Overall Iguana grill is on a level slightly above your hole-in-the-wall chips, salsa & burrito places, and it's a laid-back place to hang out with a few friends or go for a casual weeknight date.

Iguana Grill is in a nice shopping area. The decor is just over the top enough to make the average Tex-Mex fare look above average. Not bad...

Iguana Grill is good Mexican food with great decor. I enjoyed the quick service, and was very appreciative of how quality the staff is that runs the place. They were very open to creating a dish that was not on the menu, but was a mix between two dishes I couldn't decide between! Their chips and salsa are great too.

Great atmosphere. Nothing special about the food. Pretty run-of-the-mill, even for a Mexican restaurant.

Since moving to Tuscaloosa over six years ago, I have had the opinion that all the mexican restaurants in Tuscaloosa use the same generic Sysco products and there is very little creativity and originality. Unfortunately, the food at Iquana Grill also fit that profile. Although, decor and service do make it the best Mexican exerience in Tuscaloosa, its still not saying much. If you are truly a fan of mexican (Tex-Mex) food, you're better off driving to Birmingham.

Food is good, atmosphere is nice, service was slow, our waiter took over 10 minutes to bring our fried ice cream!

I thought this place was gorgeous in a (like Keith said) gaudy prom kinda way. But I was pretty enchanted by the decor. The food was mediocre. I had what I order at every Mexican restaurant: enchiladas suizas, or enchiladas with green sauce, in laymen's terms. The meat reminded me of canned chicken, which is never impressive to me. Service was terrible. I ran out of water a few times and was ready to leave for a good 15 minutes before we could ever get our waiter to bring our check. I think the location and decor are the only reasons I'd give it another shot, but I'm sure I'll go back at some point.

The food was ok and the prices were fair I guess. Nothing special here and the service was really bad. It took about 15 minutes for us to get our drinks refilled.

The food so far the best I have had since I left Texas it gets a 3 just because there mixed drinks are horrible even there margaritas and I had heard they were good and that is my wife's fav drinks I had a long island ice tea I sent back and a Alabama slammer that was drinkable but that was it. Go for food not drinks

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
