Let me start off by saying that your lunch options in Luverne, "Friendliest Town in the South" are pretty slim. If you need to stop in Laverne for gas, lunch, a tornado warning (or in my case all three), I wouldn't discourage you from eating here, but don't go outta your way, if you know what I'm sayin'. The food is southern fried, and the specialty is chicken (white meat costs extra). You also get three sides (collared greens, corn, etc) for a bargain price of $4.99. Everything is pretty gross except the chicken. If you get iced tea, it's coming sweet, they don't even ask, which I kind of like. The place is very depressing, no windows and no color. The waitresses are very sweet and friendly, and call you "darlin", which I also like. Unfortunately, most of the food is bad. On the bright side, you can get about 2,400 calories for five bucks.

I used to enjoy making sojourns to the Chicken Shack from my college home in Troy, Alabama. I never ate in, always ordered at the outside window. I always felt like the Chicken Shack fit the Mayberry vibe an outsider gets of Luverne perfectly. The chicken was always delicious, and the fries were decent. I never got deeper into their options than that, but those passing through Luverne, you might as well stop. This is a real Southern, small-town eatery that has a lot of personality.

Yes, Luverne is a small town and there are not likely to be a lot of gourmet options. But as an alternative to fast food while driving to the beach I found this place to be excellent. I had the fried chicken, baked beans and potatoes and gravy with pecan pie and sweet tea. A consummate southern meal and while not the best I've had, it was very tasty and hit the spot. Portion size was perfect for lunch. The chicken had good flavor, the beans were at least semi-homemade, and the sweet tea had free refills. My friends had the pulled pork and thought it was good. You also can't beat the prices for a sit down meal. I would definitely stop here again when going through Luverne and would recommend it to my friends.

Affordable price, fast service, fried chicken was great, the sides were a bit salty, but the meal was overall good. The scalloped potatoes were delicious. Very friendly service. Definitely worth the stop for a true Alabama experience.

I come through Luverne quite a bit. I love to stop here for lunch... well really theres no question about it.. Its about the only restaurant in this small town, anyways its a typical southern food hole in the wall.. good chicken sweet tea country fried steak... prices are very good.. 5 bucks for 3 side and a meat and rolls. I don't know why the reviews are so low on here, I love this place.

I agree.. There aren't alot of options for lunch in Luverne Alabama..and with that being said the Chicken Shack would not be my first choice. The chicken could be a little less greasy and soggy.. and the french fries were inedible. But the service was great which is the only reason why I gave them two stars

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat on our way home from the beach. We've started a new tradition to try out local restaurants in stead of hitting the fast food joints. That's how we discovered the Chicken Shack in Luverne. We started off with an appetizer, fried green tomatoes, they were perfect, not too greasy and fried to perfection, yummy! I had the chicken fingers, fries, slaw and potato salad, all of which were delicious! My husband had the meat and two lunch special, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy with macaroni and cheese, delicious as well. It's no five star restaurant, but it was good none the less. There's not a lot to choose from in that area and if you aren't craving fast food then this is the place to go. I felt at ho,e there being from a small town myself. The place was clean, the food was good and affordable, and the service was great- who could ask for more?

People complain about a greasy heart attack on a plate just waiting to happen here....but what do you expect you are in the south! Where we believe everything is better fried and the tea is always sweeter. So if you're looking for healthy options then this place is not for you. Better head a little further down the road to subway. But the staff is always sweet after all it is the friendliest city in the south. This place has been around for a long time and there is a reason for that. Lunch is always good and each day they offer something different. But one thing you will find everyday on their menu is fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw, and tater salad. So just remember south means fried fatty foods so if that isn't your thing don't stop and then complain later.

I wanted to go to another establishment in Andalusia but they were closed. I decided to keep driving down Route 29 and wound up here. I entered in the back and grabbed a seat at a table. My waitress came by right away and got me a Pepsi and I placed my order. I got a full order of chicken strips. It came with fries and coleslaw. Total for everything including tip was just under $12.00. On to the food.......... Chicken Strips- You get about 5 pieces of white meat chicken strips. They were breaded in a thin coating and were decent sized pieces. The taste was good. Nothing amazing but it hit the spot for some fried chicken strips. I would get them again if I came back. Fries- Regular crinkle cut fries. They were ok. Coleslaw- Unfortunately didn't try any of this. It didn't look too appealing and I only like one coleslaw anyways (Phils BBQ). Pepsi- Besides sweet tea, it seems like the drink of choice down here in Alabama is Pepsi. (They did have a Pepsi plant/bottling facility right across the street too). My waitress kept my glass filled. I have been noticing that restaurants down here always make sure your thirst is quenched. Halfway through my soda, my waitress came and topped me off and then left a half glass by my side to fill up myself later. I appreciated that! Service- Southern Hospitality at its finest. My waitress was smiling and asked me "Do you know what you will be having to eat?" Most people out West are like "Are you ready to order?" with a plain jane tone. People down here treat you like family and like you are eating in their house. I have not had bad service yet. Even while paying the bill, they were all smiles and friendly as can be! The food was pretty good, the price was fair and the service was great. I would stop by again if I ever decide to take another drive.

I agree with Chris. Pretty much everything on the plate was disgusting and the place is depressing. The fried chicken was soggy, the carrots were beyond mushy, the potatoes were fake, the hush puppies were inedible, and the peach cobbler was gelatinous goo. Totally not worth the calories, but it arrived at the table in about 3 minutes, if that's important to you.

This is my favorite lunch place on the way to Florida. Ok, there aren't a lot of options, but I'm a fan of the "meat and three". I get the fried chicken every time. I was told that the pineapple pudding as basically jellow and so I didn't order it. The slaw was over-mayonnaised and I left it alone. But the peas and rice, even though nothing special, hit the spot.
