I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food but when I am this is where we order from. Always hot and fresh, easy to order. I enjoy the lo mein, hot and sour soup, crab Angels, Mongolian beef is yummy. Good place for Chinese!

My husband and I found Shangri-la when we moved to Birmingham in 2000 and it has always been our special place to eat. The food is always of good quality and taste. We can always count on having a good meal in pleasant surroundings or on those occasions that we want to stay in the delivery is wonderful. The staff are always pleasant and helpful.

A Perfect 10. The staff is great. They are very attentive to the needs of the table. Ask for multiple egg rolls, even if you have to take the extras home with you. They are sinfully awesome. The egg rolls dipped in the sweet and tangy sauce that accompanies it makes it so much better. I usually get the sweet and sour beef plate which comes with a ton of rice. The only down side is that is a bit pricey for a Chinese restaurant, so be sure you have extra cash or a credit card on hand.

So my Fiancee and I came here because of Yelp reviews. Um...yeah. Atmosphere: 3/4 Service: 5/5 Food: 2/5 We honestly felt like we were cheated by the reviews, haha. This is more like a Chinese restaurant that caters to the Western taste. It's a good restaurant, but it's just not authentic.

Still my favorite Chinese Food even after I moved to NYC! Love this place! Everyone is super friendly and the food is always delivered promptly! This place is a must go- a hidden gem!

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Birmingham. Nice ambiance, good *fast* service, and great food. I always get the Mongolian beef, extra spicy.

Best Chinese in Birmingham! I highly suggest the sesame chicken. The owners are so nice and service is quick and great! I also suggest Genera Tso chicken too for someone a little more spicy.

Superior fare and generous portions. Service is fast and friendly. Mongolian items (beef, chicken, pork, shrimp and combinations) are generally top notch.

This place has been here for over 20 years for a reason. I always have a great experience and they always remember me. The best hot & sour and the best egg drop soup anywhere in town.

Sadly, this place has been in a continuous state of decline for years. I have been a witness to this over the past few years. I started dining at this place over 20 yrs ago. Recently I dined with my family here and it was without a doubt, the worst Chinese food I have ever had. To add to the ongoing tragedy, The excellent waiter Jim is no longer working here. He was a staple for over 20 yrs and always made sure the guest were well taken care of. I would also like to add, that contrary to the Yelp listed hours of operation, This place has been closed on Saturdays for years. What kind of self respecting place is closed on Saturday night? I would like to recommend that Shangri-La faithful patrons try The Great Wall on Valley Avenue. The Great Wall has a new chef and the food is now better than Shangri-La ever was, even back in the Shangri-La old days. Jim will be forever missed as will the Shangri-La of yesteryear. Again, you owe it to yourself to try The Great Wall.

I think the hot and sour soup is the best in the area. Egg rolls are appropriately greasy, and the portions are ample. Well priced lunch specials. Beef with broccoli is always a safe bet. It's clean, and the service is fast and friendly. It's nothing spectacular, but it's decent and consistent.

It's okay. Menu descriptions are often unclear if you're avoiding little things like meat, or sugar, or breading. It's a decent enough place, but I have the memory of my worst Chinese meal coming from there, which was a corn and chicken disaster. I can't remember the name, but it was like a sugar soup with corn and chicken floating in it. That was a long time ago, however, and I shouldn't hold it against them. Unless they still serve it, then yuck! It's okay eating, and I have a friend who loves it, so don't just take my word for it.

Everything we ordered tasted amazing. I love this place. The food is fantastic, the service is always great. I like going here for the ambiance more than anything. Certainly will tell my friends about this place.

Great lunch, nearby where I work. Shangri-La is in a small strip mall. Food for lunch comes from a menu with a bout 30 combo plates. You get choice of hot and sour soup, egg drop soup and one other. You get an egg roll and a chicken wing. Didn't really understand the chicken wing but I also didnt have a problem eatiti it either! I ordered the Sesame Chicken, Egg drop soup and my little chicken wing! All well prepared, flavorful and tasty. It wasn't over the top but it was all very well done. Usually sesame chicken has sesame seeds on it, this did not, which I found unusual but it did not impact the mean in the slightest. The decor was very clean, and well taken care of. Two salt water fish tanks while a little kitchy were pretty to look at. I mean let's be honest, it's not good food without a fish tank right? Huh? No? So I will surely come back again for lunch as the food is good, hot and served incredibly fast! I was very impressed.

Part of the fun of visiting my folks in Birmingham is a major part of the day is choosing where to eat. They go out for dinner or lunch every day and they have their favorite spots. Dad raved about the lunch deal at this place so we visited yesterday. It's in a strip mall which has been there for years but is still considered new to me since I don't come to town very often. I loved reading in Evan F's review that this is owned by the same people who ran the China Garden, which I also have childhood memories of visiting with my family. Usually on Sunday nights for some reason. The lunch special is great. 6.95 for soup, an eggroll, a small piece of chicken, and an entree. I was boring and got sweet and sour pork with a bowl of egg drop soup. I tried my mother's hot and sour soup and it's pretty good. I wasn't given a choice about rice so I'm assuming brown or fried rice would be an additional cost. We were seated and served quickly. There wasn't a big crowd but there was a big table of businessmen and a few other tables. We were in the front room so there was a larger dining room in the back. Overall a pretty nice experience.

This used to be my neighborhood restaurant and only thing I miss about living in that area. Food in general are good. Few dishes are great. I used to consider their Mongolian beef to be the best in town until Rice Lovers off of 280. However their chicken wings I crave! Just typing about them makes me want to make that 30min track out there to try some. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of their food portion inconsistency which I noticed when I visited regularly.

Best lunch value around! Best Mongolian Beef in town. Hot and Sour soup has shrimp and scallops at dinner. My favs are Mongolian Beef, General Tsoa Chicken and Mu Shu Pork

Kung Pao? More like Kung Plop; when did this place get so bland? The egg rolls were straight out of the freezer. Next time I'll stick to our "cheap Chinese" place over on Oporto Madrid Road.

Wow, can't believe nobody's reviewed this place. I've always liked Chinese food. As a child my parents frequented China Garden (which is now a strip joint/arcade) at the end of Montclair past the old Eastwood Mall. When it closed down they chose Shangri-La as their new spot and I was along for the ride. What's great about this place is that it's hidden away on Montevallo amongst nail places and fast food joints. More times than not you can walk in and get a table with no wait. Wednesday nights are occasionally busy. The food here is excellent and consistent. Everything and anything you get will be delicious. My dad likes sauteed bean curd (tofu) and it looks god-awful but it's growing on me. No MSG, good quality ingredients, experienced chefs, you can't go wrong. The pricing is pretty moderate for Birmingham but you get more than you pay for. You could probably get a full meal for two for about $25.00 including tip. Service is also spot on. Ask for Jimmy, he's a friend of mine and very funny. The guy's got a memory like a steel trap. Ms. Yeap, the cashier, is extremely nice as well. Easily the best Chinese food in Birmingham for half the price of places like P.F. Chang's. You'd be a fool not to try it once.

The lunch special here is hard to beat. Less than $7 for a huge plate of food, eggroll, chicken wing and soup. And the food, even at this cheap price, is delicious.

Ok, so it's another chinese restaurant in a strip mall, but to be honest it's been consistently good. The standouts here are the egg rolls, and hot and sour soup. Entrees to try, shrimp with black beans, or the chicken lo mein. Quite a popular place on Sunday afternoons with the after church crowd. I don't trust many chinese places in this city, but Shangri-La has constantly passed the test.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
