Huntsville is mostly a desert of good food, with national chains being the principle exception. Add to that the fact that my family is practically straight of the boat from Germany, and a group of pretty good cooks. With that being said, it was with very, very low expectations that I came to Hildegard's for dinner on a recent Saturday evening. Miraculously, my low expectations were completely blown away by our meal here, and I hope to be making many return visits to Hildegard's when visiting the area. The restaurant is hidden in a tucked away portion of a run-down, old strip mall. You would really have to be looking for this spot to find it. There's a sad looking patio, and the interior is mostly devoid of decoration besides a TV blasting the latest German pop music. However, when you walk in, the first thing you're greeted with is an impressive refrigerator full of homemade desserts. We're not talking about a gelatinous pie and a single cake here, but literally a dozen kinds of made-in-house-from-scratch European desserts. Once I saw that filled dessert case, I knew two things: 1) I was saving room for cake, and 2) this spot might be better than I was expecting. For my meal, I decided upon one of the lighter (ha!) options, of a grilled sausage, red cabbage, and spaetzle with gravy. Every bite was delicious. The knackwurst was crispy and juicy. The cabbage was the perfect blend of sweet and sour. And even the spaetzle, while smaller and more gnocchi like than my family's version, were delicious and tender. Even the little cup of gravy on the side was delicious- rich, beefy, and flavorful. Every item I would order again, and the bites I stole of my companions' schnitzel plates were equally tasty. Though the portion sizes are quite generous, every plate was cleaned by the time it went back to the kitchen because the food was so good. Authenticity and taste were both equally high. Even though we all won memberships in the clean plate club with our entrees, most of us also saved room for dessert. Though I almost had order envy over my companions' picks of fresh blueberry cheesecake, black forest cake, and chocolate cake, my nutella cheesecake was to die-for as well. It was not your typical, heavy cheesecake, but light and fluffy. And, as with our dinners, the portions were huge. A single slice is easily enough to share, but I was certainly glad I had my own. They were sadly out of their homemade apple strudel, but that's just a good reason for me to go back.

Maybe the best pan fried potatoes I've had and a pretty good schnitzle too. I had the rahm pilz schnitzle which came with a creamy mushroom sauce. Plenty big. A little thicker than usual so it was almost reminiscent of a Southern fried pork chop but not quite. Will probably order from their selection of smaller portions next time. Friend enjoyed his jaeger schnitzle. Is it the best schnitzle in town? It might be. It's been a while since I've been to Cafe Berlin or even Ol Heidleberg so I can't fairly compare. (Schnitzle Ranch is not really to my liking.) Bread tasted home made. They could use real butter though. I also had the slaw. I think it was green cabage and red onions with just a few carrot shreds for color. It was vinegary as you might expect but i think it had vegetable oil on it too. Not bad just different. I wish it came on separate dish though as it didnt really mix well with the schnitzle and potatoes. Friendly staff. The decor was pretty interesting. They set it up so it seems like you are on a patio. But honestly the building isn't much. It doesn't matter to me at all but I would hesitate to take business there.

I loved the food it was some of the best German I have had in this area. I was slightly sad the beer I wanted was out of stock at the time I went to get my meal and service seemed a little slow but they were very nice and friendly. Also the decor was nice but wrought iron chairs aren't all that comfy for a long meal. Prices are about 20 dollars person before drinks so figure on spending a few dollars. Other wise great food and I will be going back.

The down and dirty: the seating is limited, the decor is marginal, but the food is pretty darn good. If you're passing through town, you probably won't find a seat last minute. The food is worth the wait. The long story: Hildegaards is a gem amongst the mom and pop shops that respect quality. And you can't beat the price that goes with it. I ordered the special at the time: schnitzel, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, butterfly chicken and a hiefewiezen (on tap). I ended up sharing the apple strudel for dessert. The chicken was juicy, the cole slaw was not overly tangy, the mashed potatoes had just enough butter and cream in them (sprinkled with parsley)...and I couldn't make it to the schnitzel there was so much food. I did save room for the apple strudel which was light and flaky, yet kept well-caramelized apples and raisins in-between layers. So tasty! The hiefeweizen fit the meal well too! If I lived in Huntsville I'd make a trip to Hildegaards more often than not. Unfortunately I'll have to put this on the 'to do' list when I visit again.

1st time coming here and I ate the VEAL RAHM SCHNITZEL. It was the best. Best service I've had in a long time dinning out.

Zer gut comrades!!! Mein schnitzel ist wunderbar!!! Wow, I felt like I was back in Heidelberg or Mannheim.......weiner schnitzel and red cabbage and spaetzel was excellent.....just wish the portions were a tad bigger. Bringing family back here next month....their new room addition was much needed and really improves the place.

Whatever you do, make sure you save room for their cakes! All cakes are fresh made in the store. They are amazing!!!

A small quiet German restaurant tucked away in a small strip mall. The owner had a restaurant in Madison, AL a few years back call the Bier Garden. If you ate there you know what to expect here. They make the best Rahm Schnitzel and red cabbage in town. They are also one of the few places I have found in the States that makes a Black Forrest Cake the correct way. They also have German beer on draft and it is available in a German-sized 1-liter glass.

Great local German food. Fantastic bratwursts, great authentic potato salad, and homemade german baking. I will keep going back until I have tried the whole menu.

Authentic, well-prepared and plentiful German cuisine transported us to the typical Bavarian gasthaus we frequented when visiting Germany three years ago. The cold dunkel beer on tap was excellent. The schnitzel, red cabbage, cucumber salad was excellent. If you don't look out the window onto the parking lot, you might almost think you're on a typical small-town German strasse or square. The service was very friendly. Got desert to carry out because we couldn't eat another bite - will pull it out of the frig later.

Biggest portions of the Huntsville German restaurants. I love the Jaegar Schnitzel, and always get pan fried potatoes, with a creamy cucumber salad on the side. Yum. Small restaurant, but has a large outdoor area. Staff seemed very nice. Our service has always been excellent. We always bring home leftovers.

Good food...but probably wouldn't be too comfy for a group, in terms of size or roominess. The atmosphere feels a bit more like a Subway than a German restaurant, but if you keep talking and eating the entire time you're there, you probably won't notice it. The desserts are great. Not my favorite German place in town, but a welcome change, now and again.

Authentic German food, prices are reasonable, and the cozy atmosphere make Hildegard's a "can't miss" restaurant. Did I mention how delicious the food is? Mmmm!

Hildegard's is my new favorite stop in Huntsville. My wife and I ate here mid afternoon recently, so I cannot vouch for their service during busy times. The food, however, was fantastic. My wife had Wiener Schnitzel and I had the Holstein Schnitzel. Both were delicious. The portions were generous. The Black Forest Cake was not the best I've had, and I wish I would have taken the server's advice on dessert. Other than the cherry center, the cake is bland. I'm sure they have other better desserts, because the entrees were fantastic.

I first have to admit that I am not a huge fan of all things fried, so take my review with a grain of 'salz'. At first I was alarmed at how small the place was, but these guys made great use of their diagonally shaped eatery. Though it was busy, the wait was minimal, and the waiters helped one another to keep up the quality and speed of service at every table. Don't let the small storefront deter you from trying Hildegard's. I've been to Ol' Heidelberg and Cafe Berlin, and when I'm not in the mood for schnitzel or sausage, I order grilled liver and onions at those two places, and I'm usually pleased. Hildegard's didn't serve it, so I ordered the poached salmon. That was pretty good- a simple but sizeable portion of salmon, served with red cabbage (of which no one at the table was a fan) and my choice of potatoes (sauteed, mashed, or German potato salad). I had German potato salad, and it was just fine. For dessert, we tried the chocolate cake (no coconut flakes, mind you) and the apple streudel. They make their desserts in house, which is a plus. There was a large variety, but I'm a fan of carrot cake, which they did not have. Since I'm no expert at German food, I cannot say how this compares to the other places in Huntsville, but I did miss my carrot cake and my liver and onions!

First time here, but definitely not my last!!! Food was excellent! Very traditional German cuisine! The portions are very large, but you get to take some home for lunch the next day! Wonderful selection of German biers as well! WOW is all I can say!!! You will not be disappointed!

We had dinner here the other day and really enjoyed it. We got nervous when we saw a few people in line in front of us, as we hadn't made reservations and this place is TINY. But we got seated after a very short wait. The food was excellent, we lived in Germany for several years, and this was very reminiscent of our time there. I had the Schweinebraten (roasted pork with brown gravy), Spaetzle, and red cabbage, and I loved every bite. Kelly had the Sauerbraten with the same sides, she really enjoyed it, and I had fun helping her finish, too. I was hoping against hope that they might have a nice Rauchbier; they didn't, but I had a great dunkel Hefeweizen from their draft, it was great. I would definitely not recommend this place for groups unless you arrange to take over the whole restaraunt. They have made the most of their space, but there is not a lot of room to move around here.

So, to all of you out there writing and reading reviews, I am the owner of this restaurant. I should have a voice about my own business but sites like yelp and TripAdvisor make it extremely difficult to respond and or change the facts. There is a review about our restaurant on this page that is completely fake but yelp posts what THEY think is the truth. Mr Paulo Smith is not a customer of ours his name is Jeremy John Smith and he just wants to sabotage our business. There are reviews from actual customers that Yelp decided not to post because THEY didn't think they should. We are asking our customers to write reviews because we are very proud of what we do and Yelp should not be the one deciding for the business!

Stopped in while in town on business. Very glad I did. Atmosphere is cozy, with great German radio playing in the background. Service is prompt and courteous, happy to describe and explain menu items. Beer selection is very good. We got a skewer of bratwurst & polish as a starter. We both had the spicy goulash as our soup, then I had the Wiener schnitzel and my coworker had the Jaeger schnitzel. Sides were warm potato salad and cabbage. Everything was delicious. Portion size on the Wiener Schnitzel was average, but the Jaeger Schnitzel was gigantic. I can recommend this place without reservation. If I were a local, I'd be here all the time.

Found this place when my dad and I were passing through and he mentioned German. Meal starts off with bread and butter, bread was very good. Chad our waiter was very helpful recommending selections. I had the smoked pork chop with sauerkraut and potatoes. OMG, best I've had since Rothenburg de Obertauber! Totally intended to take some home to the hubby (the portions are generous) but ended up eating every bite. Dad started with the Asparagus soup (he liked it, but I've had better) then had the sauerbraten with red cabbage and potatoes and also finished every bite, which is unusual for him. Atmosphere is quirky and German. Check it out if you like German food.

Best German in town...nicely decorated restaurant, servers weren't wearing Dirndels, great beer selection! Obligatory German music in the background, but, it wasn't obnoxious or loud. Menu classic German, only thing missing was knödel. Had the Rahm Schnitzels, they were definitely not small...sauce was just ok, will try Jäger next time. Fabulous selection of German cakes & the chocolate cake was lovely & not overly sweet! We'll be back

My husband took me to Hildegard's for my birthday this month. It was my first authentic German food experience, and it was phenomenal! I had the Bavarian Pork Schnitzel with red cabbage and pan fried potatoes. In the best ways possible, this tasted like it came straight from my grandmother's kitchen. Nice big portions, delicious homemade flavors. I wouldn't change anything about it! I also had a glass of the house white wine, which went great with my meal. We finished our dinner by sharing a massive slice of the black forest cake, and it was to die for. Soooo yummy! On top of that, our server was very sweet, attentive, and great at explaining the menu items. We will absolutely be coming back! Thanks for a great experience. :)

Very yummy German food and huge portions at Hildegard's! I had a Bavarian pork schnitzel, stuffed with shrooms, onions and Swiss cheese. It came with slaw, which was ok but nothing fantastic - I wish they would have been more clear that I could sub red cabbage in, I would have done that. The spatzel I got as the other side was delicious, and they give you a lot. The schnitzel was very tasty and a very big piece, pretty much like a stuffed pork chop. I couldn't finish everything, which doesn't happen very often. They had luscious desserts, but alas, I had no room left and needed to go before the food coma hit. The service was good, although the two or three servers seemed to run around a lot. As others have mentioned, they have German pop music playing - tonight it was Disney songs and Grease. I would have preferred some oompahpah music instead. They also seem to have a good beer selection, I heard plenty of surprised voices due to people finding beers they hadn't had since last time they were in the Old Country. All in all, tasty food, decent prices as long as you don't add more sides, and very tasty food.

I'm new to German food so I don't have much experience. I had the Reuben sandwich and it was huge! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The panfried potatoes are also very good. They are only open on certain days, which is a bummer for me because I live pretty far from there.

Oh, Huntsville...in all my visits here, your German food has always been good, especially considering I am not a huge German food fan. For those from out of town who may be surprised at the number of German restaurants in a relatively small city, I have been told by locals that it has to do with the large-ish German population that came from post-WW2 military development by Germans that were brought over to Huntsville. Could be wrong, but that's what I was told. Enough about history from this history nerd. The restaurant is clean but quite small, and the seating can be tight. When it's warm, it appears they MIGHT have an outdoor seating area, which would help, but I am not 100% sure. They also closed at 8:30pm on this particular day, so be aware of that if you like to eat later. I rolled in about 6pm on a Tuesday and ordered the special so I could get a taste of a few things. Chicken schnitzel - Very basic but delicious. Crispy but moist, and tons of flavor. The piece wasn't huge, but was quite enjoyable and seemed of high quality. Jaeger Schnitzel - Pork with a mushroom sauce. It was quite good but not extraordinary. I like pork schnitzel, and I like mushrooms, but I think the sauce just didn't do it for me, whatever it was. Chicken Apple Sausage - So fantastic, this was the best thing on my plate without a doubt. The flavors were rich but balanced, and the casing had a nice snap will still being easy to cut and eat. Also, very moist. Kraut - Perfectly savory and sweet. Not much more to explain. Quite good. Pan Fried Potatoes - Awesome! Crispy but soft and moist, with chunks of bacon or something like it. Chocolate Raspberry Ganache Cake - Not too sweet, which I appreciate. There was a very thin layer of raspberry in the middle, but it was otherwise just chocolate cake from what I could tell. Moist and tasty. Service is friendly but sooooo slow. And this was on a Tuesday night with maybe 15 people inside at most. From sitting down to leaving, it was over an hour of waiting for every single thing. I would certainly return, but plan on being there a bit longer than expected.

Terrible. Simply horrible. I have eaten here twice but tonight was the final straw. The first time, the food was bland and unremarkable. This time, the bratwurst was burnt, one of them was quite literally scorched on top. I tried to eat it, but it tasted like charcoal. I sent it back, only paid for one. Was not given an apology or any special offer either. The service was not great. And the German potato salad? Yep, potatoes were undercooked. This place is horrible and I advise you to avoid at all costs. Eat at any of the other German restaurants in Huntsville where the food is at least edible and tastes good.

We were told that this was the best and most authentic German restaurant in Huntsville. Having lived all over Germany for 7+ years we had high hopes.... Maybe they are rated so highly because they have 2 German beers (a Spaten Dunkel & Hefeweizen) on tap? Maybe we were there on a off night but the service was awful! Our server was distracted, did not get our order right and forgot to bring the condiments we had asked for until we were almost done with dinner. And this with the restaurant not even 20% full! So, then, how was the food. Goulash Suppe - a BIG MEH - more like chili (it was made with ground beef not small chunks of roast like they do in Germany) My wife's salad looked like it had been setting out all day - even the lettuce tips were curled. Have the server take it back? Would have if she had ever checked back at the table! Oh, and the bread that they served with the salad & soup was nothing that any self respecting German would ever call bread! Dinner was better - MUCH better! My wife and daughter had the pork schnitzle and I had the Wiener schnitzel - both meats were tasty and, in the case of the pork schnitzel large portions (my Wiener schnitzel was a bit on the small size by German standards). The Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) was absolutely outstanding - the potatoes could have been a bit more crispy but I am splitting hairs here. My daughter has the Spatzle - another MEH - they were dry and, again, looked like they had been laying out. My wife's rotkohl was wonderful! Crisp cabbage with that sweet ever so slightly sour flavor. My sauerkraut was classic German crisp and very good. Our daughter has what was termed "slaw" and was probably one of the most vile side dishes any of us had ever tried! Again, we were "forgotten" by the server and were simply left alone...which I would have understood had the restaurant heel almost full...but again, there were maybe 4-6 other couples dining when we were there. Perhaps we will try it again some day but for now we will rely on ol' Heidelberg in West Huntsville for our German food fixes. (Re: TV that I checked - has very dated German singing performances played on a loop - the videos must be 10-15 years old :)

It was OK. Food was good, but not great; service is very friendly, with fun Deutsche tekno-pop playing (not too loud, just right); dining area is attractive and comfortable, though not classy; a little expensive for the quality. I'll give it another shot another time, but not one of my first-round picks.

The food was good. I had a pork dish that was stuffed. It would have been better if the pork was tenderized, but overall the flavor was good. The only distracting thing was the horrible German pop music playing in the background.

Been there a few times. Enjoyed each item, but occasionally had grizzly meat. Gravys are excellent. Deserts are also quite good and portions are good.

Absolutely phenomenal food, had three different waiters approach us throughout the meal to ensure we had everything we needed. If you like authentic German food with BIG portions this place is for you.

Fabulous little place. We had a hard time finding it, but we were so pleased when we did. Service was great and helpful with suggestions. My husband had the jaeger schnitzel and I had the Hawaiian chicken schnitzel. They were both great!! Wish we lived here so we could go there all the time.

Mmmm!
