Meh... but maybe not. I dropped in last fall for the first time to Drake's with a few friends and it was actually a fairly enjoyable experience. Their sushi is in line with most places around town (and still better than ILS,imo). Won't kill you, won't dazzle your taste buds either. But Drake's reminds me that Huntsville is beer country and that's about it. Now don't get me wrong, they have other things on the menu and at the bar than beer... but you probably don't want it. I tried one of the signature cocktails in a mason jar (*pause*) and it was pretty much watery kid juice. My liver may yet thank me later but I wasn't pleased. The food makes up for the lack of alcoholic diversity though. I've had the Rangoons which come with a duck sauce like compliment that I wish a few more humdrum places would try. The grilled cheese and shrimp, chicken nachos and the quesadilla are nice. Now service... Lol... what service? As a few other Yelpers have noticed, much of the waitstaff may be "out to lunch" during your dining experience. Dropped by yesterday to grab... take out. And you know what? The Turkey Avocado sandwich is actually good. Like "I'm gonna remember this" good. We'll balanced, savory and served on wheatberry bread... just nasty, in a good way though. Served with crinkle fries that are probably better if I'd dined in but whatever. So far this is my favorite item. My rating? Three. That's my number and I'm sticking to it... but I feel as if the food alone warrants another trip to endure undue punishment. Maybe they'll issue safe words at the door next time... which is really hard to find with the doors up for spring / warm weather Probably gonna visit during normal hours. Huntsville continues to disappoint me when the sun sets.

Very nice environment. Only thing I did not really like was the stools that are used for the majority of seating. I had BLT salad w/chicken. Very good. My wife had mushroom burger and slaw which was also very good and large. Only bad thing was she likes rarer burgers and was not able to get it that way. We had Frickels (fried pickles) which were very good. Overall pleased and will return. We also had live music tonight which was nice. Understand fish and chips and fish tacos are also very good.

I met a friend for lunch and was confused by the no hostess/seat yourself situation. Luckily, my friend came in right behind me and we explored for a table together. Because of back problems I was looking for a booth or a chair with a back on it. Strangely there were none. Not a single bench or chair had a back! We settled on a bench and had a prompt and pleasant server. No issues with the service. I ordered a salad and my friend ordered the crunchy fish tacos. The salad was enormous! I hated knowing from the beginning that most of this salad would be thrown away. I worked and worked on it and was only able to carve a small area out of that vat of salad. My friend had similar issues with her tacos. There was enough food on her plate to fill up three field hands. Come on Drakes! Americans are fat! What's with the gigantic portions!

Surprisingly one of the best spots for sushi. Really fresh tasting! Anything with white tuna is a must. Great atmosphere, staff and food!

Great environment, great food, great beer, great service. I loved this place. The atmosphere made me want to stay, drink some beers, and watch the game ... so that's exactly what we did. We all had burgers at our hostess' recommendation and everyone loved them. You can't go wrong. We also had the pickle chips which were great. Beer menu was solid and reasonably priced. Great sports bar environment. Too loud for intimate evening or a family night out. Open seating can be tough on busy nights.

For casual beer lovers, this place hits the spot with their variety of local and seasonal beers. I'm a sucker for anything 'fall', 'October-', or 'pumpkin' so of course my eyes flew straight to the delicious fresh pumpkin ale they had. Their food portions are at ridiculous levels so share. My friend and I got these loaded nachos that are beyond what nachos should be. Roasted Chicken Nachos implies some sort of healthy aspect to it but that all gets lost in these gigantic stuffed tortilla layers with sour cream, dressing, and more. There's plenty of other condiments they provide but none of that is necessary to enjoy this dish. The service here is fantastic. Our waitress provided samples and great recommendations on the beer selection. The best part was the open layout of the restaurant that gives you the view of the rest of the plaza so you don't feel closed in.

The food was excellent! However the 1 hr & 20min wait for it was not. I went for a birthday party on a Saturday night, there was only 10 of us. I understand that's a lot of food... However they know how Saturday nights can be so they need to make sure they are properly staffed in the kitchen. Server was a little slow on making sure our drinks & chips stayed full(since we waited so long), but overall she was a friendly person. The atmosphere & music was great! I definitely will be back but not on a weekend.

Was in town for a few days and visited Drake as a request from a friend because I didn't know one was in town. The food and fun was good. The service on the other hand really need some work. Usually if you sit at the bar you will get better service but not here. The manager really need to get control of the employees talking because they weren't working. I was trying to order and again pay my tab and it took a while because the employees was talking. The music was really good so five (5) stars to the DJ.

Seat yourself. Don't expect a greeting. Turkey, Swiss, and Avocado Grill was excellent. A very tasty sandwich. It was a little messy which to me is a sign of a good sandwich. I got the sweet potato waffle fries. These were disappointing. They were thin and few. My workmates' plates were overflowing with fries and tater tots. The taste was lacking because they were so thin. Also, the pickle spear was more like a pickle straw. It was nearly non existent. The service was lacking as well. After our meals were served, we were asked if we wanted silverware and napkins. Really? Just bring them. Bring them before the food is served! Don't ask if we would like what every diner needs. Silly move, waitress. I'm glad I visited but was disappointed in the things that should be a standard.

Just discovered Drake's a couple months ago, and have been pleasantly surprised by the food and the vibe. Surprised by the food since any place that advertises "Beer, burgers, AND sushi" seems overly ambitious. Also surprised by the vibe since this is not only Huntsville (not exactly a food mecca) but the SE Huntsville suburbs, where the usual social life choice is church group vs. car wash. Drake's IS in Alabama: 90% of the TV screens show what the rest of the world refers to as American football, and many of the vegetables are available deep-fried, but it's the closest thing to decent bar food without having to drive to BTR.

Great Burger and Staff. Also really enjoy the late nite mini burger deal. I'll be back often. Cheers

This place is great for adult night life and great drinks!!! Love it!!! Love the service the people and the environment!!! The food is amazing and worth every penny spent. Took my friends visiting from out of town there last night and they loved it!!!

A great sports bar with an awesome concept of seating yourself wherever you want. I love the outdoor/indoor seating near the bar. My husband and I went to Drake to watch the Wizards vs Pacers game, they had every other television showing the game. A plus for us since we're huge NBA fans. They have a huge selection of beers and a pretty good menu. The icing on the cake for us was the 90's music that the DJ was spinning :-)

It seems like many people have had less than stellar experiences here. I popped in to meet a friend for lunch about two weeks ago and had a nice time! We split the Drake's Chicken Chopped Salad, which is described as: Chopped greens, roasted sunflower seeds, tomato, bacon, cheddar-jack cheese and chicken breast; honey mustard dressing. (10.99) but we subbed seared salmon for (13.99). The salad was really fresh and good, and the salmon cooked to order. We each had a glass of wine and our water glasses were never empty. As noted by others, there is no hostess, so you grab a seat. I could only see two bar rooms, and never saw the garage door/outdoor area that others mentioned. The only drawback to me is the backless seats and the hardness of the seats, but, I guess that's what you get with modern decor. Oh, and (at least ours was) tables are attached to the floor, which, if you're not an Amazonian, can be cumbersome. We ended up too far away from the table, so some of the salad ended up in our laps, ha ha! We lucked out and I scored a booth that butted up next to the wall, so we had good "lumbar" support. :-) Our server was friendly and quick and nice. The bathroom was really clean. I'm looking forward to going back!

The food and drinks here were awesome, it was truly great experience other than the waitress with the worst attitude I have ever seen. If you believe simple requests like a glass of water warrant an eye roll and me having to go to the bar myself to get it because you don't feel like it, maybe the service industry isn't the best path for you. I would highly recommend this place, but just stay at the bar.

  • Cristina G.

Good place to grab a craft beer and sit in the open air! The selection of beers is excellent, the drinks are inventive as well. I didn't try the food but it looked good as it passed by. While the patrons were a tad young it still is a good place to grab a beer and enjoy the night.

I would highly recommend Drakes. The food was amazing .... We had the sliders sushi and wings. The restaurant is ultra clean the waitstaff is top notch. One our favorite places to eat in Huntsville.

Sliders are great, beer selection is money and the tots are where it's at. Seriously tho, get the tots.

I stopped in late afternoon with my mother. We were both craving sushi and had heard that theirs was very good, so we gave it a try. 1st, our server was quick and attentive. She seemed to be that way with all of her tables. She had a great attitude and personality. She never made us feel like we were a hindrance. She mentioned her shift was ending and was going to trade us (which is normal protocol for any restaurant), but she stuck with us. We each ordered a couple of rolls and shared it. They were both very good. The best that I have had in Huntsville. I was driving, so no drinks for me, but my mother got some kind of raspberry lemonade (alcoholic version, of course). It was very good and inexpensive. It was also smooth. We couldn't taste the alcohol, but my mother said it packed a little punch. I just tried a sip. Don't you judge me :). I'm not really much of a beer drinker. but my stepfather, who joined us a bit later, is and he ordered a few. Our server was very knowledgeable and accurate on all of the beers that he ordered (or so he says). I had a great experience, and I will definitely go back!

First and foremost, I would like to echo Geoff B.'s sentiment that the service is slow and unattractive. Now that we have that out of the way, I will go into a little more detail about my two Drake experiences. The first time I went it seemed like a restaurant. I walked in and sat at the bar and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with tots. The burger was ok, the tots slightly better. The beer was cold and tasted fine. The bartender was friendly and attentive. Overall a 3 star experience. The second time I went it seemed like a club. I was greeted by a bouncer and a cop at the door checking IDs. That was weird. I wonder if they have a No Jordans policy... To read more about my second experience just refer to Geoff B.'s review. I am one of his Porto buddies who sat on the uncomfortable bench with him. Also, I would like point out that they have those gross gimmicky beer towers. Who would want to drink from those gross things? Think about it. Those things are tall and I doubt they have a special machine that washes them. Some poor individual probably has to stick his/her arm in their and wipe it down with a bar rag. Also, it's not like the beer's gonna stay cold in those things. sick. This place gets 2.5 (rounds up to 3) stars from me because of my first experience and because it's smoke free. But again, don't expect fast and attractive service.

  • David P.

The service from the waitresses is exceptionally slow. Like in a way I've never experienced before. Also, the girl taking care of us asked after one drink if we would like to close out now. I asked why she was in such a hurry to get rid of us at 10:30 and she said she didn't have any other tables so she could go home early if we left. Unbelievable. So I gave it two stars because if you just sit at the bar you'll get decent service and it's not a terrible place. They have sushi which is actually pretty decent and quite cheap too.

Kind of a young party-goer spot. Loud, energetic crowd, typical bar food. So-so liquor selection. Best enjoyed in a large group of friends.

    (3)
  • Justin S.

Let's start with the positive: Our server was spunky, fun, attentive and genuinely sweet. That's the ONLY reason this reviewer is giving Drake's any stars. Now while I can't say that I had the worst restaurant experience in my life--because it wasn't--it was just plain bad. I think better training of the servers would help them have a broader knowledge of their menu and the breweries and background of the beers they serve. And a competent manager would have someone stationed at the front door to greet people when walking in. I was amazed that there was no host, and no apparent recognition that my family had walked in the door. It was very awkward. Even a sign that reads "please seat yourself" would have been helpful. (We came early, just after 5pm). I ordered a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale that was tasty. I opted for the BLT "minis" (sliders everywhere else) because I didn't want to run into any food problems. Who can mess up a BLT I thought to myself. Apparently Drake's. Shredded limp lettuce drowned out everything. The 1/2-inch square of bacon was over cooked and overpowered by the lettuce. I opted for tots instead of what I suspected were grocery-store-bought crinkle-cut fries. What I got for this "heaping grab" of tots were 14 criminally over-salted tots that hadn't been hot in their short life. Generally, I love salt. Seriously. I salt everything. I even salt my salt. But these tots was barely edible. My mother ordered just a simple cheese burger, but it was clear to me, and anyone with 20/40 vision or better, that the burger was way overdone, and had been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. The cheese looked like it was melted the day before. Limp crinkle-cut fries from an Ore Ida freezer bag left a lot to be desired. My stepdad got the fish-n-chips. I personally love a proper fish-n-chips, having lived in the UK for a stint. This had all the trappings of a proper plate, except that upon inspection his "white fish" was translucent and undercooked. As someone who has owned a restaurant and knows how hard it can be to run a restaurant, I understand that every place has a bad day. This wasn't a bad day. This was clear evidence of poor management at the top, and people without prior foodservice experience in the kitchen following steps on a sheet of paper. Even the bartender seemed "overwhelmed" unable to handle the drink orders from the 8 bar patrons and the few tables in the back room. Huntsville needs and deserves better than Drake's, but unfortunately, since residents are not used to having restaurants (at every price point) who hold themselves to high standards, Rocket City will continue to suffer from mediocrity on a pedestal.

I went here with a couple of my Porto buddies when I was in Huntsville over the holidays. I found the service to be quite slow and unattractive. On the other hand, it was a place to sit and drink some beers without that smokey smell that Huntsville bars are known for. And when I say sit, I mean we sat on these bench seats which are at each table and are shared by the neighboring table. I could've touched butts with the person behind me, if I wanted to. I didn't really want to though because she wasn't very attractive. Or she was a man. I can't really recall. Also, the beer tasted funny. This place is relatively new, so I'm sure they'll pull it together. C'mon, Drake! You're in the key smoke-free bar niche of Huntsville. I know you can do better! Bacaw! I bumped it up by one star to give it a total of two because they have Wifi which allowed us to FaceTime with a dear friend of ours who couldn't be there with us.

Another great spot for non-smoking guests with a full bar and great food. I've visited several times and from the sushi to the burgers, the food and service have been top notch. I recommend the pixie stix martini- a great girly drink. It's $9.50 for a tiny cocktail, but that's pretty much the norm around Huntsville for cocktails. There is a really cozy spot in the corner of the restaurant with a fireplace and 2 chairs and I've been lucky enough to find it empty a few times. Best seats in the house. The only drawback is that for some reason, they do not have a hostess. If they are busy, you basically have to lurk around, waiting and staring to see if someone is going to abandon their table. Then, basically dash over there and jump into their seat as they get up. It's unpleasant jumping into someone's warm seat and staring at their empty beer glasses and food remains. I hope they decide to get a hostess.

  • Darren B.

For Huntsville, it 's OK. Guess I 'm desperate. Seating can be a big problem if you go at peak times. Try late lunch or early dinner seems to solve seating problem. There are very few restaurants around worth waiting for. Drinks are too pricey, but food prices are reasonable. Drakes is crying out to become a sports bar. But, with out satellite sport packages, there's NO WAY !!! I will be forced to go eat the crap at Buffalo wild wings.

  • Craig L.

I like it. Good atmosphere including the open air setting with the garage doors. Food is largely bar food but good, especially the fried fish / fish and chips. They have sushi that I have not tried but it looks good.

  • Gary P.

Oh me oh my oh me and I! Well isn't this just the spiffy little joint. I just love love love how they illuminate the light and harness the breeze by opening the garage doors. The BBQ burger was delicious but unlike most things I couldn't finish it all. As far as the servers I do feel they could do a little better in their hiring process. It seem to me that most of their lady parts were either A) lacking or B) not in the correct place. But as far as having fun socializing and doing the typical tues boys, beer, and burgers it works for me.

  • Michael R.

First time in and I really like the concept. Too bad the open bar area opens to a parking lot. Had to try their shrimp, tomato, and grilled cheese sandwich. Very good. In fact the group I was with all enjoyed their meals. Can't wait to go back and try their calamari, read description and sounds like a similar made item I just had in downtown Detroit a few weeks ago and it was killer.

  • Aimee W.

I don't why everyone is bashing this place. I've been a couple of times and I've had great food and service both times. The fish n' chips are awesome, the fried pickles are awesome, even the chopped salad was good.

  • Nikki B.

Be prepared to be a major lurker to try and get a table. If you're lucky you won't pick the people who decide to stay and chit chat 45 minutes after finishing and paying their bill. I have no idea what the benefit is of not having a hostess and making people stare and wait for someone to leave and then shove everyone out of the way to see who can sit first and claim the table. I ordered a mixed drink which was pretty good but there was so much ice in it I literally took two sips with the straw and it was gone, for $8 that's unacceptable. The servers were too busy talking to each other to worry about waiting on you, I asked for water 3 times and never did get any, I finally went up to the bar and got it myself. The food was Ok but after waiting over and hour for a table and then another hour for the food it was not worth it. I was visiting from out of town but if I lived in Huntsville I would find another place to "hang" and have a beer. WAY too much work.

Good place to grab a variety of food items from sushi to burgers. Nice facility, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Kitchen takes orders until 10:30 open till 1.

    (3)
  • Jeff M.

Pretty decent beer selection. Sushi was good, not great. But for a place that serves burgers, they do a pretty good job. Wasn't terribly impressed with the burgers. Not much flavor. I dont think the meat was even seasoned. Best thing ordered at our table was grilled salmon (I think, maybe cedar plank, can't remember) and it was pretty good. Saw a couple people with fish and chips or chicken fingers so I may try that next time. Service was good so it seems to have improved based on some other reviews. I'll definitely go back, just have to find what food they do best...

  • Heath K.

On first impression, Drake's has that cool, local sports bar and grille feel. The atmosphere is cool for sure, with several garage doors/windows that raise to make it open air. But the view is just a giant parking lot, lessening the open air appeal. Foodwise, they've got a gigantic selection of mediocre and overpriced options. Service is slow as a baseball game and unforced errors are made frequently. Still, their worst characteristic is poor customer service in the sports-watching realm: TV's that stay frozen for hours, bartenders that aren't "allowed" to change the channel, managers that ignore staff requests to change the channel, hostesses that put you on hold for ten minutes on the phone before assuring you that, Yes, they have that channel showing your favorite team's game, but then you arrive to discover that, No, they don't have that channel with your favorite team's game. My ire for Drake's grows with each encounter. I'm occasionally dragged here kicking and screaming, and I'll drink a beer and make the best of it, but this place has frustrated me more than any restaurant I've ever met.

    (2)
  • Matt S.

Great place to go for a beer and get some fresh air sitting out in the open bar, the food is OK and the service has always been fine. Considering that the next closest bar in the area used to be the Thirsty Turtle I would say we have grown by leaps and bounds.

    (4)

I've had great service and great food the two times I've eaten here! I think it is a nice change for Huntsville!
