Rag time is a great little local's joint. They have amazing hamburgers, great pasta, and daily fish specials. It's always pretty crowded at lunch, but I've never had a super long wait for a seat or for my food. In warmer weather it is very nice to sit outside for lunch and relax with a drink.

Well, it's kind of just food. Granted, I've only eaten one meal here. My dinner consisted of a roast beef and cheddar sandwich and a cup of beer cheese soup. The soup tasted old. Perhaps they are aging it? The sandwich . . . I felt like it could have been good, but like I said--just a sandwich. No grace, no glory. Not a bad meal, but I'm not dying to find out what the rest of the menu tastes like.

Solid place. Spent a lot of time there when I lived in Birmingham, but I'll write this review minus the extra star for nostalgia. It's an expansive menu with a lean toward New Orleans/ gulf coast fare (muffellata is on the menu). The specials menu is almost as long as the regular menu - lots of steak and seafood. Pretty much everything is good. Service and atmosphere are solid. This is really a local's scene, and close to the only truly good restaurant in the Pelham/Hoover area that I'm familiar with.

Great place to stop while on the road. The food was fantastic. If you aren't a fan of Food chains and mass produced food, it's a fantastic place to stop since its not far from the interstate.

Great place to eat. I will be back if I stay overnight in Pelham again. The place was good for watching sports and enjoying a good meal.

The blackened Tilapia fish tacos were good and hot. Definitely add the sauce to them that comes on the side, fantastic. Sweet Tea was good. Do not order the Ragtime queso it is disgusting. I asked for some salsa instead and it was like they poured it out of a can. I think it is the worst salsa I have ever tasted in my life. Key Lime pie was homemade, but it was lacking something making it really good. It was decent though. Service was decent, at first she seemed unhappy, but then she warmed up. Drinks were kept full. Not a lot of into on menu items, but maybe different on a different day. I always make sure to be as polite as possible at restaurants, because I know it is hard work and people are sometimes too picky when they walk in and sit at a table. Service got better the longer we were there.

Ragtime is a nice "locals" watering hole and restaurant. The restaurant is family friendly and has lots of TVs for watching sports. Ragtime is very popular for lunch so get there early or be prepared to wait to be seated. When the restaurant is crowded it sometimes takes a long time to get your food, and the service can be slow. The food is good. I suggest the New Orleans Muffuletta, Club Sandwich, or one of their excellent hamburgers. I also remember the Buffalo wings being pretty good. There is seating outdoors, and when the weather is nice this is a good place for happy hour.

Speechless. As a world traveler and a foodie, I am blown away that this goldmine is in Alabama. I would have paid $100 for the entrée I got (blackened grouper with shrimp and crab topping). It cost FAR less than that... I'm here on biz, and there's way more people here than I have seen at any of the local bars. The Long Island tea is unbelievably delicious and potent too. In a major city this would be a reservation only hotspot.... in Alabama, it's like an oasis that turns out to be a water park.

Ragtime Cafe is a great neighborhood restaurant whether it is for a quick lunch or a relaxing afternoon or evening on the patio with friends (also the patio is dog-friendly). There is a wide selection on the menu, and the daily lunch specials are always good (country fried steak and chicken pot pie are two of my favorites!). Homemade quiche is also usually available at lunch. On the sandwich board, I would recommend the buffalo chicken sandwich, the muffaletta, and the shrimp po-boy. The fries are seasoned crinkle-cut and very good, but the pasta salad is also a good choice for a side. On the entree side, I like either the Cajun chicken or shrimp pasta. Salads are humongous! If you have a sweet tooth, the homemade strawberry cake or key lime pie are excellent choices when they are available.

Stopped in for the first time in a few years, since I moved out of state. Looking for a nice dinner, trying to avoid chains, and I remembered how much we liked Ragtime. This was on a Monday night and while I was surprised at how light the crowd was, I wrote it off to being both a Monday evening and President's Day. The decor had not changed in the time I was away, other than fabric panels replacing the smoke eaters in the dining room ceiling. Back in the day this was THE PLACE but with the light crowd, the dated decor, and bathrooms in need of an update, it's not the place I remember. So, there were high point and low points. Highs: My steak was outstanding. I'd put it up against the best steakhouse in town, it was that good. Also our fried grouper and oyster basket appetizer was very good and it appeared the others at my table that ordered the twice baked potato really enjoyed that. Others in our party ordered crab cakes. I was suspicious of them due to the low price. I believe it was $16 for two crab cakes with two sides and a salad. I live in Maryland and that price point encouraged me to believe they were "crab" cakes. I tried them and they were not to my taste, lots of filling, red pepper, and very fine crab, not lump. The others at my table, however, really enjoyed them and there was certainly nothing wrong with them, just not my cup of tea. Unfortunately, the lows were a mix of poor service and personal preferences. The personal preference issue was something I noticed the moment I walked in, the 55 gallon iced tea and water glasses. This used to be a really nice cafe but nothing screams country meat and three like massive plastic water/tea cups emblazoned with a Coca-Cola logo partially obscured by the thousands of wash cycles these cups have endured. It's just not the dining experience I'm looking for. We almost left before we were seated but the host handed us the menu and the evenings specials. There is a distinct disconnect between the two. The regular menu looks, and reads, like a diner. Burgers, pizza, etc. The specials were heavily centered around grouper and offered some outstanding sounding choices. Kind of a weird dichotomy. We ordered a few beers, some nice craft options were available, and a basket of crab claws. Back when we lived in the area, we stopped by at least every couple of weeks for a basket of these claws and a couple of beers. We tell people about them to this day as they are the absolute best we've ever had, anywhere. So of course, this evening, they were out of them. Maybe they didn't get their shipment due to President's day, I don't know, no explanation was offered, but I was very disappointed. We proceeded with ordering, three entrees, and within a reasonable amount of conversation, our food was delivered. My steak was a rib eye with portobello mushrooms. Fries were not one of the listed sides but the waitress graciously offered to substitute them upon request. The steak was delivered with a huge pile of crinkle cut frozen fries. I would have preferred fresh cut or at least steak fries. It was also served with a bowl of an au jus type sauce that tasted of mushroom soup. The steak was cooked to the perfect temperature and the seasoning was outstanding with a touch of wood smoke to the flavor. A few minutes into our meal the waitress brought another bowl over and set it in front of me saying "the cook said this was suppose to come with your dinner." It was a bowl of sauteed mushrooms that was left off of my plate. I suppose the intention was for them to be served on top of the steak and it was forgotten. I dumped them over the remaining meat and they were quite flavorful. It was about that time, about half way through our meal, that a member of our party remembered that we were suppose to have salads with our dinner. I called the waitress over and asked about the salads, she, of course, got an "oh crap" look and said she would get them right away. I said please don't, we were half way through our meals already and would she please just put them in individual go-boxes and we'd take them home. I know it's been a while since I visited Ragtime, but as I recall, back in the day, there were two owners, maybe they were brothers, and one of them was there pretty much all the time. Service back then was outstanding, the energy level of the place was always high, and the place was always packed. I don't know if they still own it or not, I know neither of them were around, and the place has really suffered. Sorry for the long review but I would love to see this place return to its former glory. The folks I took to dinner this particular evening live in the area, had never been there, and while they enjoyed the food, the other letdowns won't really encourage them to come back. It probably was less than the three star review I've given it this particular evening but I just can't bring myself to go lower.

I really enjoyed Ragtime Cafe. It's a cozy nook! Very popular on Friday nights-the servers seem to know the regulars by name. Good family spot, but get there early if you plan on bringing a group larger than 2-3. The long island iced tea is hands down the best in town! this might actually be the first time I've had one in about a year, but please believe, I'll be back looking for another round. Even though my drink was so amazingly good, my meal was not that outstanding(which is why I withheld a star). I ordered the steak burger...wrong menu item! Its never good to settle for something else that you'd rather have. Nonetheless, I had back up with my husbands yummy cajun pasta(kinda salty after while though), and the showstopper.....buffalo chicken fingers on the appetizer menu. Next time, I'll be good with a bowl of those and a side of fries- true american dish! Priced just right and a casual night out. you're welcome & enjoy! don't worry, be HAPPY!

Long wait to be seated, the food was worth it. Ordered baked oysters ragtime, wedge salad, shrimp po boy. Taste buds were delighted. I forget what husband ordered, it must have been good since his plate was clean.

Nice surprise dining at Ragtime Cafe tonight! Love the patio dining with fans keeping it cool. Super friendly clientele and servers. Food was exactly what you would expect and beyond. After all, it is a strip mall! Excellent job on the grilled grouper. Truly could not ask for better value and the service extended to our dog; unparalleled!! We will return with puppy in tow.

Ragtime Cafe is one of my favorite place to go have a good meal. The food is fresh and you can tell that they take a lot of pride in what they serve. I had cheese logs as an app, fried chicken tenders as main dish, and fries for my side. Every thing came out fast and I had no problem with anything. I will definitely be back to Ragtime and hope that you go too!

Mediocre food, nice staff, slow service. Waited until I'd eaten an appetizer and my side item to tell me they didn't have my entree item. Nice people but not worth it overall. Big disappointment.

Thank you Yelpers! We've been to Ragtime Cafe twice now for lunch while in Birmingham. What a find! Quick and efficient service. Great food. Queso, bacon quiche, Po Boy, Cobb salad...all terrific. Don't be worried that it's in a strip mall; just stop, sit down, let them give you great service and food.

Love to eat here! This is a go-to place for the hubby and I when we want take out. It is always busy for lunch and dinner; full of regulars. Small bar; patio open in warm months for outdoor dining! Everything that we have ever ordered has never disappointed. But my absolute favorite item on the menu is the grilled buffalo chicken fingers and the Grilled Chicken & Artichoke pizza. The salads are also really good- I reccomend the chopped oriental. But unfortunately closed on Sundays.

I have been here twice so far and both times I have had a great experience. I have had their countryish specials with meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and peas. The meatloaf was great, very flavorful hot and tasty. the vegetables were well seasoned and still preserved the raw vegetable taste. The next time I had the cajun shrimp pasta in cream sauce which was also done very well. So far they have been spot on with everything. The staff are quick and friendly. The specials usually hover around $9 to $12. Good job guys.

I've been here a handful of times when friends wanted to go there. As others have stated, the food seems to be Southern & Cajun inspired. While everything I've had here has been good, there is nothing spectacular about the food or restaurant. The service has always been good and the restaurant is clean and nice except for the main eating area feeling a little cramped. All in all, it is a solid, reliable meal that most Southerners will enjoy but you won't be seeing them on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives any time soon...

I have been to Ragtime Cafe twice and both times the food was fresh and delicious. We also had large parties both times, yet we still got out food in great time and had excellent customer service. This place is a hidden gem!

I've been here a number of times. I often forget about this place due to the location. The salad with tenderloin and fried oysters is delicious! Good for a quick lunch/ take out. The burgers are pretty good as well! A lot of people rave about the seafood..... As a seafood fan I am going to have to put it on the list to try for dinner.

This last minute dinner destination was courtesy of my aunt not being able to decide what she was really craving. I had noticed this place multiple times on my way to work and it was almost always packed. I decided on the blue cheese burger while my aunt chose the chicken alfredo. My burger: cooked to a perfect medium rare but not anything spectacular. On the other hand my aunt's pasta was absolutely perfect. It was honestly the best I've ever had. I would definitely still recommend this place and give props for the wide range of choices, atmosphere, and service.

This is not a food review... I have been in there twice but haven't tried the food. It smells great in there. The second visit was about a year ago. I wanted to place an order to go. I walked in and looked at the menu and asked the waitress about the cut of beef in the special of the day. She hollered my question back to the kitchen and I got a snide remark from back because I had not heard of the cut of beef. Okay. Smart a**. I started to leave but really wanted to try the food. The restaurant was completely empty except for the packed bar. I'm talking about standing room only! The waitress on the restaurant side directed me to the bar to place the order to go. What? You want me to wade through all those people to the bar and hope to get the bartenders attention to get food to go? I'm not a prude but at this point in my life I am not interested in hanging out in the typical pick up bar full of young/wannabe young people trying to impress each other. If that's your thing...great. Perhaps they should have an alternative way to order food to go that is convenient for the customer. I went to the bar but they were too busy so I left. I am sure the food good but making your restaurant an accommodating establishment is important too. Its called service. The waitress had no customers at all so why couldn't she assist me? To the ego in the kitchen...bite me!

Great place to grab a quick lunch. I was rushing to get back to work, so I sat at the bar and ordered to go. This place is moderately full at lunch, with a crowd that feels like regulars. The bartender was really nice and took my order quickly. I ended up getting the quiche and it came with fruit and a pasta salad. The quiche was nice and filling. I wasn't that big a fan of the pasta salad and ended up not eating it. I liked the variety of fruit they give you. Overall I think this is a great place to grab a bite to eat. It has a small town feel about it that is nice.

Either I'm getting older or this is the strongest long island I've ever had! Oh wait, I'm here to review my experience... so let's jump in! A unique little spot that I definitely recommend you give a shot. To start, very crowded on Friday evening around 7 (as to be expected) but it wasn't a turn off at all. You can smell the seafood in the air as soon as you walk in (not a bad thing at all). The restaurant is split into a bar side (stays open an hour or so later than the kitchen) and a restaurant side. We were seated in about 5 mins, so no worries here. We started with an appetizer of Buffalo-Style Chicken Fingers which were Huge, Hot and Amazing! Very good starter... be sure to get some bleu cheese or ranch to compliment. Friday is also apparently "pick any special" night (see my photo) so my wife and I both had $5 long islands... refer to my opening tagline for commentary on this. I ordered the cajun chicken pasta while wifey had some variety of burger. The cajun chicken pasta had amazing cajun flavor and really packed a good flavor punch. Only thing is all that flavor makes it a borderline sodium-bomb, ready to explode at your next annual! A little turned off by this but if dialed down a tad... excellent dish! The burger (that I took a bite of) was a good burger, but nothing to make it a stand-out, must-have burger! All in all, very good dinner and we'll definitely return to try some other items off the fairly diverse menu!
