I frequent several of the sushi restaurants in town and O'Sushi is at the top. Leo, the owner and head chef, always has fresh fish and the quality is outstanding. There is a wide selection on the menu which is better than others who just have the standard paper and pencil sushi checklist. I have sampled a wide variety of the rolls and have not had a single one I didn't finish; they are all good! Leo is also good at creating something if you are an adventurist. He has a good attentive staff and they are always nice. You will not be disappointed with this restaurant.

O Sushi is a sushi restaurant tucked away in Hoover. We arrived to a fairly empty room for an early dinner on Labor Day. There were two servers and we were seated immediately. We ordered soon after and the food didn't take long to arrive. My impression is that the sushi is fresh. The avacado was perfect ripeness. The fish was good and fresh. I had the tuna spring roll, which was fried to my surprise, and the eel roll. The two by themselves was enough for a dinner. My friend got a bigger dinner, the Maki combo with three rolls and soup, and ate all three rolls. He seemed pleased as well, remarking on the avacado. The prices seem competitive for sushi. I do recommend this restaurant.

This place is FRESH. Sushi bars in Japan do not stink fish. This restaurant has same characteristics but with westernized menu system. With Auburn Tiger and Roll Tide rolls being my most favorite. Not only you can order one of the freshest fish in town. There is a bunch of varieties of cooked sushi plates to enjoy for those who can't take it raw. For instance you can share a Crunchy Shrimp roll with someone who doesn't eat raw fish. That way y'all are gonna be happy - you'll have your sashimi and she'll be able to enjoy the evening with you with a plate of cooked sushi. Tuesday nights are the half price sake and 8 bucks for any specialty rolls, which are the fancier ones. Too bad it's only for dine in. There are also lunch specials which are pretty reasonably (if not cheap) priced, it includes the miso soup, of course. The area itself , "The Preserve" has grown a lot, since i moved to Birmingham 3 years ago. The brand new Sprouts market (love it) and Starbucks make this place a growing Galleria. Also there's a Marshalls store which I like coz it's one of the cleanest.

In from out of town and loved this place. We ordered 4 rolls, all were excellent and came out quickly. Place is very cute and clean. Service was also excellent and attentive.

A sushi restaursnt in a strip mall cant be good right? Wrong! This place is becoming our favorite sushi place in town. I was a bit nervous my first couple visits because it just wasn't that busy when it first opened, and that is never a good sign for a sushi joint. But this place is buzzing all the time now! Great variety, good prices, good service. Check them out.

This is definitely a sushi place, so if you are looking for really good sushi, come here. We had the viagra roll for an appetizer. It was really, really good. Our meals came with the standard ginger salad and miso soup. I had the salmon which was a good sized portion. It came with veggies and fried rice. My fiancé had the seafood tempura which is a giant amount of fried food. He didn't read the description well and didn't realize it was all fried so he wasn't happy with his but wasn't the restaurants fault. Next time we go here, we will probably just stick with the sushi for our main meal. Can't wait to come back!

A great spot close to home! Restaurant is small but packs in 20 or so tables with sushi bar seating.. Includes one TV and is playing current hits music in the background. Quiet, low key atmosphere, but not bad. Menu includes your basic rolls, plus many specialty rolls, apps, and a few hot items. Something for everyone. Husband and I stopped for dinner on a Friday night and the crowd was light but energy was good. They offer beer, wine, sake and soft drinks of course. We tried the basics since it was our first visit.. shared a seaweed salad, gyoza, spicy tuna, spider roll, flounder sushi and yellowtail sushi. Everything was really good! Tasted fresh and was well prepared. The spicy tuna was not loaded with mayo which I prefer and wasn't too spicy. The Spider roll was typical, but included romaine lettuce.. That was new to me. Added a good texture but it was weird. Everything else was what you would expect.. I would easily order those same choices again. Close to home and good, fresh sushi... We'll be back!

This is by far the best sushi place I have found in all of Birmingham! It's small size may fool you, but they bring out the absolute tastiest and creative sushi rolls I have ever had! I always go on Tuesdays when all special rolls are $7.95!

  • Will B.

This is definitely one of my go-to sushi places in Birmingham. They have some of the freshest, most delicious sushi you can find in town. And if you hit it right, the price is pretty good too. I am a junkie for a good deal; and Tuesday's at O sushi falls well into that category. All specialty rolls are $7.95 and all sake is half price. We love to have a great mid-week, date night and get some great sushi at a great price. The Thai roll is my wife's favorite. It has a really fresh taste, and a must if you love cilantro. I am a big fan of the Firecracker. It has a little darker flavor than the Thai, which makes them compliment each other very well. The fantasy roll is also another good one to try. And if you love miso soup, a cup of that is a must here too. The service is also always on point. Never had a single problem. Always worth the trip out to Hoover.

Nice space with good sushi. Quality was high and the value is outstanding. If you like sashimi best to double up your orders as the pieces are small. Even after doing so the price is very reasonable. This was not the case with the rolls as they were typical in size.

My fiance and I ate there Thursday night. It was very small But it was very clean and pretty. The waitress was very kind and attentive. It was very quiet because there was only us and one more table with a couple. We first ordered edamame and sake and both came out quickly. For dinner we ordered the dynamite roll, Crunchy shrimp roll, Auburn tiger roll, & Spider roll- they also came fairly fast. All four of them were amazing. I was hesitate to eat here because of certain reviews But I'm glad we decided to go anyway.. I think it's my new favorite sushi place!!

Place was good, im from New York and the sushi there is pretty good. I was surprised the south has good sushi. Get the shrimp roll it's amazing and spicy crab.

  • Jane J.

Absolutely the worst grade sushi I've tasted. Ever. The sushi rice tasted like plain rice, not sushi rice. The cooked rolls were fine (so was the california roll) but the sushi was worse than grocery store sushi by far.

  • Amy C.

Good but not great. I really looove the ambiance though. Coming here feels like being transported to Japan. My favorite sushi in B'ham is Jinsei, but if I can't go to Jinsei on a Sunday for $9 rolls and don't want to fork over a $100 bill than this is the spot to go. The thai roll here is my favorite, and the sashimi is pretty good.

Each time I've been to O Sushi, I've been thoroughly impressed. The clean interior is kind of small, so it can get crowded on a busy night. The staff has always been attentive and friendly. There does seem to usually just be on (maybe two) girls serving, so the wait to order has been long on occasion. I generally get the chefs choice sashimi entree. It's always a ton of fish and I've been pleased with its quality every time. O Sushi... O yeah.

    (4)
  • Ashley W.

Yeah...no. The sushi I had at O Sushi was comparable to grocery store sushi. To begin, my husband and I both had miso soup which was obviously from a mix and super salty. I know it's a pretty salty soup to begin with, but this one tasted extra salty. We both ordered water and went through our first glass pretty quick because of the soup, but our waitress didn't come around very often so we were left with nothing to quench our thirst. My husband and I shared the california roll, rainbow roll, and the dragon roll. The california roll seemed slimy - I think it was the crab that was the slimy part. Not typical in my california roll experiences. The rainbow roll was okay but once again, the inside was an odd texture unlike other sushi. The dragon roll was probably the best sushi we got, but it still wasn't good enough to return to O Sushi. Too bad, because we lived a few minutes away and I would have loved to add it to our dining rotation.

  • Tim M.

Had spicy tuna hand roll and dragon roll. The spicy tuna hand roll had quite a bit of avocado - almost taking away from some of the spicy tuna flavor. The dragon roll was excellent and I really enjoyed it. Family had dynamite, halloween rolls. These had quite a bit of sauces on them which took away from the natural flavor but still enjoyable. We also had eel and crunchy shrimp roll. The crunchy shrimp roll is 1 of the best I've tasted in quite some time. Appears to be family run as the server spoke some broken English but overall good atmosphere. Hardwood floors with bamboo plants (not sure if real) and clean sushi bar area. They should add some music to help add to the atmosphere. Don't forget to check in on Yelp!

I ordered the salmon lunch special. The fish was good. It wasn't $50 good, but it was good-- hence the two stars. Everything else that came with it was just ok. The fried sides were bland and the fried rice that I paid extra for was alright. I thought the prices were extremely high for lunch. I bought two adult meals and two kids meals and we drank water. I paid over $50 with tax and tip. I just wasn't impressed. The waitress made several mistakes in our order and on our ticket to pay. I will not go back.

We've been fans of O'Sushi since they opened! Great sushi and sashimi, love their shrimp and veggie tempura, miso soup has great flavor, ginger salad is always fresh. Add to that great service and you've got a real winner!!

Good service. Spicy tuna roll was awful; tuna was not fresh and had a very fishy taste and mushy texture. The waitress happily ordered us something else.

Edamame very good, ginger dressing not my fav, seaweed salad very good. Got the Thai roll @ firecracker roll.

Nice relaxing atmosphere and good service. Salad was cold fresh and lots of good dressing. California roll was tasty. Firecracker roll very good but the temperature of the rolls should have been colder. Enjoyable and relaxing.

I had a great experience. The sushi was reasonably priced and delicious. The special rolls are highly recommended, especially the dynamite roll. Plus, the waitress with the curly hair is very fine.

This is by far the best sushi in Hoover if not all of Birmingham. I have eaten at O'Sushi at least 10 times and find the Sushi of very high quality and very consistent. I have read the negative reviews and disagree with them with one caveat, don't go if you are not eating the sushi. This is a sushi place. BUT, IF YOU LIKE SUSHI !!! ...make sure you get the Firecracker roll. AMAZING. i had the Auburn roll for the first time tonight and it may be my new favorite. I have never had a bad roll here. My son and I have enjoyed sharing "The Love Boat".

O Sushi is located next to O'Brady's and so I'm thinking Irish sushi bar? And just in time because St. Patrick's day is right around the corner. Nope, just coincidence. We found this to be a nice independent restaurant offering a good selection of Japanese dishes, sushi, and sashimi. Behind the strip mall store front, we found a very well decorated dining room with well placed booth, table, and bar seating. For lunch, my wife had a futo roll and spicy tuna roll. Very fresh and flavorful. I tried a steak teriyaki bento box. The box was good, but I thought the steak had too much teriyaki sause and the veggies were bland. Both were served with miso soup and salad, and we thought these were good. I definitely will go back and I recommend. I'm gonna stick with maki rolls and will want to try their nigri next time.

The sushi here is delicious! I am very fond of their seaweed salad as well. Although I am a big fan of their sushi, I think they could improve their entrees. The service is great and I believe that the atmosphere of the restaurant contributes to it's success (decor is great!).

Driving Cross country (from ATX to Montreal) and we found ourselves with a "hanger" (angry hunger) creeping in. My roadmate thought it would be a great idea to eat fish on Easter Sunday and her preference was sushi. I personally thought this was not the grandest of ideas realizing we were A) Landlocked and B) In Alabama, a place not necessarily on the map for ethically diverse food. Boy oh boy was I wrong! We parked in a strip mall parking lot close to Target and walked into the cutest little modern sushi restaurant. I started with a Fresh Young coconut and when it came out truly fresh and young I had a feeling I was going to be in for a treat. Ginger Salad: Delicious, fresh and balanced Eel Roll: Yummy Rainbow Roll: Very well balanced, not too much avocado like most places, this really had a good focus on the fresh fish and the variety Crunch Shrimp Roll: Awesome! Spicy Tuna: A little on the mushy slightly warm side, this was my least fav Who would have thought that some of the tastiest and most affordable land locked sushi could be found in Hoover, AL. Great service and a delightful meal that helped give us the energy to finish our drive in Maryland. I attribute the 14 hours of delightful travel instead of dreary driving to this humble, clean and yummy place.

Excellent rolls and the salmon is incredible. Prices pretty good and they have 1/2 off special rolls on ties night

  • Heather G.

The service was great, but the sushi was lacking. The rolls are over priced and missing quality & flavor. Don't bother bringing your children here to eat unless you want to pay $9 for an underportioned kids meal. If the food could match the quality of service, this place might have a shot for success. As it stands, I don't know how they are still in business. The food is overpriced and the quality is lacking - we will not be coming back.

This is our favorite sushi place. In the interest of full disclosure we are not hard sushi people. We like ours cooked but love this restaurant. They don't use a ton of rice, the food (sushi) is fresh & the sushi is always good. We have only order a regular meal twice & both were disappointing but love the sushi.

  • Caitlin S.

Excellent! They have a few vegetarian rolls, but I did not ask if the tempura is vegan. My boyfriend said his fried rolls were the best he's had. I ordered the plain veggie roll, and it was awesome. I'd go again.

My mother and I went on a Monday night, one of the days they receive their fish. I had the peppered tuna and and mom ordered the chirashi. We shared the vegetable roll and the hot girl, just for fun, and all were very good. My one complaint is I love ginger dressing on a salad and their version accommodates the clientele. When I let them know I was bummed, they gladly gave me the yuzu dressing, which was totally fine with me. The service was friendly and timely, not quite sure when the naysayers went, but we enjoyed our dinner and service just fine. To defend the negative reviews below, miso soup is made with fish stock, soooo it's supposed to be salty- we thought it tasted as it should (came with the chirashi) and I've never heard it being sold in a can. And for anyone criticizing the "crab" in a California roll, obviously isn't savvy enough to know that those rolls contain imitation crab meat, which is just white fish. Kids don't belong in restaurants, and if yours are well mannered enough to be in one, are you really complaining about the price of the kids menu? You brought them to a sushi restaurant, feed them sushi, it's not huge portions. Lets face it, rolls are americanized, I've never seen them on a menu in Japan, and if you're truly a connoisseur of sushi, you either eat sashimi, or nigiri.... and a proper piece of nigiri is a little rice and the fish completely covers it, not the other way around. that being said, the fish was fresh, tasty and inexpensive. we'll be back. thanks leo, don't let these yo yo's get you down. keep up the good work!

After reading favorabe reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon, I decided to give this a try. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. To say this place has good or excellent sushi, is like saying McDonald's has the best cheeseburger you've ever tasted. I ordered several dishes and only favored one, and even that one wasn't spectacular. Ika Maruyaki: Horribly overcooked, and the Squid was not cleaned. No orignally with way too much teriyaki sauce. Tried to let our server know that it was not very good and she became irritated and started yelling in the kitchen. Did not say I'm sorry or if she could offer something better for us. That was the last time we saw her. Rainbow Naruto: Fresh and clean, but too much cucumer. Decent dish Miso soup: Tasted like it was from a can Hot girl: No flavor, warm, disgusting Thai: Could have been a decent roll, but should have had the sauce, which you can buy at a grocery store, left off Roll Tide Roll: Spicy tuna was not freshly made, Tuna on top was frozen. Hamachi and Otoro Sashimi: Cut wrong and could tell they were frozen then thawed out. Tasted like water. All the Rolls were messy and unoriginal. The atmosphere was stericle and very unwelcoming. Service was terrible and once I expressed I didn't like a dish I was then ignored and did not see my server for the rest of the time. Someone else brought my food out too me. I also had to pay for what I did not eat! You can find much better sushi at a grocery store and if you want amazing sushi in Bham or Alabama, you should try Jinsei. I'm very disappointed in O Sushi.

Don't even walk in. Just go to the pub next door and eat. I made the mistake of walking in. Sushi was pre-made (Spicy Tuna) in a sushi paste, was not worth the trip. I'd rather eat leftover sushi from Stix.

Great lunch selections. This place is nice and filled with light. It is moderately full at lunch time, which is nice. I really think there was only one waitress for the whole place, so if you are looking for a quick 30 minute lunch, this is not your place. However, if you have time to sit back and relax, then this is a good place to go. I love their lunch menu with the choice of a bento box or two rolls. I went with the Chef Choice Sashimi with Tuna Spring Rolls Bento Box. The sashimi was your standard sashimi, with krab, tuna, salmon, etc. I thought the fish were fresh and the tuna spring rolls were good. I liked the fruit they give with the bento box, but I'm not a fan of cooked carrots so I left those behind. Overall this is a great place to grab lunch, but next time I'll probably just get it to go.

I love the food here! It takes a while to get it sometimes, but that's the nature of sushi. I'd rather have it done right than sloppy. I often order the udon noodle soup too and it's delicious! I highly recommended it to all my friends!

Awesome sushi!!! I moved from Silver Spring Maryland and this place is a gem in Hoover!!! Their sushi is fresh and delicious! I ate here for a couple times and I will keep coming back! I ordered Dragon roll and Halloween roll and they were yummy! I also love their shrimp tempura, yakitori and their tuna tartare. You won't be disappointed to dine here. The servers are attentive and friendly.

We both had sushi. Sushi and service was just okay. I definitely wouldn't go as far as to say it's the best sushi in Birmingham as some other reviewers have stated. You can get better sushi at the grocery store!
