How much do I love Mexican food? Enough to eat it for dinner one night and lunch the next day (and I do this often). I'm in the Hoover area frequently with travels (I'm a very frequent flyer/driver with work and for personal reasons, i.e., weekend stay overs). Once again, I found myself looking for a place to eat on a Friday night around the Galleria. I wanted Mexican and no wait (my 7 year old wanted spaghetti....but she would settle for a cheese quesadilla). I did a quick search on Yelp and found Habaneros and good reviews. As someone who has eaten at similar restaurants all over the US....small towns, big towns and all sizes in between.... I approve of this place. In fact, if I were a "local", Habaneros would be my go-to place. My criteria: 1) It was inexpensive... 2) the chips were great (seemed house made) and the salsa was good/fresh (pureed type - tart/vinegar with cilantro) and free flowing (keep reading) and 3) good margaritas. They passed on 1 and 2 and failed miserably on #3 (keep reading). I had the combo M - with a huge chicken quesadilla and the chile relleno was awesome (the kind with meat...not just cheese). The kids meal satisfied my daughter - cheese quesadilla with rice (my kid is no bean eater) - huge portion and cost, $4, I think. However, like all "basic" Mexican restaurants (meaning, the ones usually name Hacienda, Monterrey, La Fiesta, Casa something another, etc.) - there are always nuisances. For example, it always cracks me up how they handle Gringo customer service. These places usually have a few TVs on, but it could be game 7 of the World Series or the Superbowl, and all sets would still be on the Telemundo channel or some Spanish speaking soap opera! This place was no different. Not being a local Gringo, I could tell they recognized...not recognizing me. We stood at the hostess station for a good 5 minutes while they cleared the paying clients at the cash registers (waiters do not take the bill up at the table). The Senora running the joint (you will notice her) finally saw us and apologetically had us seated. Our waiter was super nice - but when I asked him what tequila I could get in the top shelf margarita, he replied "Jose Cuervo". I asked for Patron and got "yes we have it, but you can't get it in the top shelf margarita...that's Jose Cuervo". So, I asked what makes it top shelf (keep in mind, you can order a small, medium or giant bucket, as usual) and he said "more tequila, Senior !". Huh?? It all became clear when he read my frustration and did a head nod over to the Boss - Senora and whispered - that's her rule. Yes, I could have just ordered a shot of Patron...but i wanted a Patron margarita...so I just settled...hoping it would be good (it was not - way too sweet for my liking). For this review, I share the nuisance(s) not to discourage patronage. By all means, if you like Mexican, go try this place. But, please....ask them the same question about the margarita (and if you can, please post your findings....I joined Yelp to see if these experiences only happen to me!) While you are at it, watch the salsa guy. He will refill your bowl incessantly - one time I had a chip going into the salsa and the little guy swiped the bowl away before I got into it. My 7 year old about lost it laughing (see she gets that this kind of thing happens always to me and that it will drive me nuts....if I let it). Summary - good food and cheap. Just stick to cerveza (unless you are the type that will enjoy any basic kind of bottled margarita). And, if you are the more uptight type...take a deep breath and try to look at the cultural gap in customer service as if you were in Mexico, not the good ole' SE of USA.

Great friendly service and good food I love lunch specials great service fast the staff is really amazing and you don't have to wait on food forever like most lunch spots

Amazing food!!! The prices aren't bad at all. The service is great as well. Went from Tuscaloosa to eat here

    (5)

The food was mediocre. Nothing wowed me here and I won't be coming back for food this basic or "gringo" tasting.

Had lunch with some co workers, this was their recommendation. I have to admit it was pretty good, Since this was lunch i could not partake in any adult beverages..... still good. The wait staff is obsessed about filling your glass up when it is just over half full. Pleasant surprise, the staff was great and the food was good. If you are looking for a decent Mexican restaurant i would definitely keep this on in mind. Next time i plan to eat here will be after work so we can taste the adult beverages.

Nasty! Do not eat here! Service was slow. Food wasn't even hot. My burrito tasted old. My lettuce was brown. Dark and dirty! I'll leave on a good note... The sweet tea was good.

Just glancing at Yelp and noticed that one of my favorites has not had a review for some time. Have always enjoyed Habaneros in Hoover. Servers are very friendly and as we are in two or three times per month (ok, maybe weekly!) we are always greeted by some of our former servers. Service is very attentive and quick! We have learned to order our pitcher of top shelf frozen margarita and enjoy the chips and salsa before ordering, otherwise everything comes at once and too fast! My wife and I share a steak and chicken fajitas and are always satisfied. A great place for lunch or dinner.

So far the best mexican food I have had in Hoover area. Great tasting margaritas by the pitcher. Their quesadillas and fajitas are to die for. Yummm!! Great chips. Salsa could be a little better but I always ask for salsa habaneros and carbone for that extra spicy kick. Most people dont know they carry three varieties of salsa, you just have to ask for them.

    (5)
  • Danae A.

Food was above average. Not to die for (personally, I like food more spicy) but definitely good. We were a party of two and we didn't get drinks or extras, but what we did get came fast. The service was friendly and fast as well. All in all, great for families.

The atmosphere and decorations are top notch. But even the best Christmas lights, streamers and margaritas in the world couldn't make up for the awful service and mediocre food. We were seated promptly by a really nice hostess. After that we watched two separate groups of people be seated and served their drinks and appetizers before we even spoke to our waitress. At that point twenty minutes had passed and we didn't receive even a half apology. The whole time we were waiting, a large group of waiters were standing approximately fifteen feet from our table laughing and joking. Normally, this would not bother me, but being ignored that long while two other tables received service right beside us was not fun. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone I know.

Good food. Had the tacos al carbon based on a yelp review and they were delish. Big enough plate to split with my boyfriend. Frozen house margarita was awesome. Had to wait a while to place our order and to get our check but overall I would recommend this place to a friend!

While visiting friends in Alabama, we went out to eat. We had a 2 year old and four adults. First and foremost, the service was nothing short of spectacular. It wasn't an "American" Quesadilla, it was truely authentic. This is where you go if you want Taco Bell with a waiter. The food has been "gringo-ized" so much that you will never see a self-respecting Hispanic eat here. I've been here several times with family who are used to bland Midwestern food so it's right up their alley. The last time I checked, ground beef, cheddar cheese, and hard taco shells are never used in authentic Mexican cooking. The service is terrific and very responsive, however and they do get near perfect health scores so that is a plus to some people. With the literally 100s of Hispanic restaurants in the metro area, you can do a lot better in flavor and authenticity than here.

Over priced. Not fresh ingredients. 5 dollar fajita enchilada was a taco turned upside down with sauce. Stale chips, guacamole squeezed out of a bag.

Smallish vegetarian menu, weak salsa, great (and FAST) service. I don't know if there is lard in their beans, though. I recommend the spinach burrito.

The food was rather pedestrian, and I don't really recommend it. It was cheap and plentiful, but their salsa has a ketcupy quality to it, and their cooking really fulfills the cliche that Mexican food is all the same 5 ingredients repackaged 5 different ways. Their meat is definitely cooked ahead of time and kept incubating in a tub somewhere in the back. Then you order a taco and a burrito and it's just scoop meat into a tortilla, add cheese -- taco, scoop meat into a tortilla, add red sauce -- burrito. If I had to pick a stand out item with would be there relleno, which is pretty good. A choice to eat here should be based on price and speed of a meal, and the fact that they have margarita's by the pitcher, rather than the quality of food. Which is a shame, because I really love Mexican food, and this chain has several convenient locations. To their credit, the hwy 31 location has first rate service, and is better than the Chelsea location in terms of food. I suspect the food at that locations is fresher due to higher customer traffic.

As I might have mentioned in some of my other reviews, I really love Mexican food. Because of this, I consider myself lucky that so many Mexican restaurants exist within Hoover and even Birmingham in general. In the Hoover area, Habanero's is one of three closely located Mexican food establishments directly off Hwy. 31. (Guadalajara and La Fiesta being the other two). I find myself alternating between the three and as such have noticed that each place has aspects that particularly shine. Habanero's in my mind, stands out because of their tacos and their Margaritas. The soft tacos at Habanero's (3 to 4 of which being what I always order) are amazing, with beef thats seasoned well, but not overwhelming to the palate. Their margaritas are also remarkable, not only for their great flavor, but for the fact that pitchers are readily available at a moderate price (an option I have yet to find at some other places). In addition to the restaurant's stand out aspects, the nachos, salsa and other fare are above average, matched well by great service and a clean environment (though the fact it used to be a Shoney's is kinda noticeable) . In general, Habanero's is a great Mexican restaurant for enjoying dinner and a margarita pitcher with some friends, though lunch isn't bad either.

Good but nothing special. I am from Atlanta where there are more Mexican restaurants than you could imagine and I was told this was the best in Bham. If that is true, I feel bad for the locals. My margarita was good, but even bad margaritas are still good. The salsa was very bland, the cheese dip was mediocre and the guacamole looks like it came out of a caulk gun. The fajitas were good and I polished off the entire portion. I asked for a different salsa and was brought a delicious hot sauce/salsa. Would I go back? Probably, but I'll look for a better option first.

The one in McCalla was bland - so we tried this one. Food was ok. Margaritas were nasty though and to top things off they charged me $4.95 for a soft tortilla with some beans on it!!!

This place was really, really good. Who would have thunk that in Birmingham Alabama I would have found an excellent Mexican restaurant? The food was super fresh and tasty and the service was first rate. The sopapillas dessert was excellent. I got off of the interstate searching for Southern Fare but ended up here instead and I could not be happier. If you live in Birmingham or if you find yourself going though (like me!) make sure you stop by this little gem. You will be glad you did.

Tacos al carbon were to die for with THE most tender and tasty flank steak. Could've been a wee bit more spicy, but it was great nonetheless. Service was fast and friendly.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
