I was in Hanceville today for the first time ever. When passing by Top Hat, it was impossible to miss the smoke billowing out of the massive chimney. I knew that we had to stop on the way back by. The inside is decorated like an old country store. Tons of old memorabilia covered the walls. Think Cracker Barrel, but more authentic. There's nothing fancy about this place, and I like it. The dining room was full of what seemed to be locals. They were all polite and seemed to be in no hurry. The waitress was really kind and attentive. The order took longer than you would expect to come out, but it wasn't a huge deal. I ordered the open face pork plate with fries and slaw. The fries were good and crispy and the slaw was cold and flavorful. The sandwich was good as well, but was more about the bread than the meat. Either way, it was definitely enough food. If for nothing more than the atmosphere, you should defintely stop here if you're ever in the area. It's the real deal.

If you don't eat heavily fried food on a regular basis, watch out and maybe opt for a salad. My past few visits have left me sickly because I don't eat greasy food regularly anymore. The atmosphere is kinda dingy but the food is okay. All the fish and chicken are battered and fried, none baked, grilled, or pan fried. The bbq is okay. They do have fried pickle chips which are very greasy, but if you've never tried them before, you'd be pleasantly surprised. Just use a paper towel to wipe off any extra oil before dipping them in ranch dressing, and popping them in your mouth. Very tasty. They have a plethora of candies at the front near the register like an old school sweet shop which is fun. Prices are a bit high for my standard. But I have always had nice waitresses.

I was surprised by the low ratings other reviewers gave Top Hat. When I'm in the area visiting relatives Top Hat bbq pork is a "must have"! I live southwest of Chicago and have not been able to find a bbq place that compares with Top Hat. From reading the other reviews I have the impression the low ratings are more about the ambiance than the food. Well, ok, the place could use some updating but for me it's all about the pig! And the ambiance did not impact my enjoyment of the pork sandwich I consumed this evening when I stopped in on my way to my dad's from the airport. I was looking forward to that tender, smoky bbq pork sandwich all year and I was not disappointed!

The locals rave about this place but my husband and I were less than impressed.

The BEST fried catfish in Bama for sure! BBQ AND Burgers are also good. Decor is rustic but a fitting part of what makes Top Hat what it is, some vintage posters and stuffed animals...an authentic rural eatery. Location is just far enough off of I65 that you have to be going here it get here kind of thing. But, well worth the effort...I'll be back when passing through the area.

Best fried catfish in Alabama! Don't forget to get some tarter sauce for those hushpuppies too. Well worth the short drive off I-65 to check out some excellent catfish and bbq. The bbq is well smoked and tender - yum!

The ribs are very good. The sauce is excellent. I've been eating at Top Hat about once a month for the past six years and I've not had bad meal. The decor is rustic and the floors are not very clean. However, the eating surfaces are clean and the health rating is very good. Be sure to get a box of bones for your dogs!

I've always thought this barbecue joint in rural Blount County, Alabama was highly overrated. People will drive many miles to eat here, and I have no idea why. Yes, the barbecue is good. The side dishes are very routine, as are the desserts. Many places in Birmingham are equally as good or better. The inside of the restaurant can be downright filthy, by the way. So don't come here expecting spic and span. Locally, Big Daddy's in nearby Warrior is much better!
