Seafood in nowhere near the sea shore... you gotta wonder how fresh is the fish. I've now been here about 3 times. The first time we did the Teppanyaki... didn't care for it much just because I've been to Kobe's and Benihana's. Our friend loved it. It's an experience. In any case, the food is good. I wish they served miso soup with their meals instead of what seems to be plain dashi. I like their miso salad dressing. Their 'Teriyaki' chicken, beef, pork or anything with the prefix 'Teriyaki' is bland if you ask me. The tempura is excellent, I think they have met the industry standard :). The Yellowtail Sashimi was pretty good. Not as frozen as other places lol. The service we've received on all occasions were pretty good. The wait staff was very attentive. I would definitely come back, but you should try Yumm in Downtown Florence or Ichiban in Sheffield if you haven't already.

Stood at empty hostess stand for 5 minutes while staff stared at me from afar. Warm and muggy, with an odor. Don't get water....bleh. Staff just wanders around in a daze. Not very professional or sharp. Four are standing around the bar chit chatting. In the end, the food was good. Lots of potential if they concentrate on staff fundamentals, have a functioning AC unit, get rid of the odor and figure out why the water tastes like it came out of a bathtub.

Umi is your typical Japanese steak house. They have good food but it's not very consistent. Different chefs cook differently and sometimes it's wonderful and sometimes it's just okay. They have a wide range of sushi which my wife and I enjoy.

I enjoy the atmosphere. Great if you are going for hibachi or full bar. If going for taste, go to Rice Box.

We are regulars at Umi's and spend around $100 just for sushi alone every time. We decided to meet our out of town friends last night for dinner and a show. The wait wasn't bad, the food was great and the cook was AWESOME, by far the best we ever had. The waitress on the other hand was a problem. She was very rude on where we sat. We had 6 people in our party and it left 3 seats on the side to the door which 2 people ended up occupying. We were very agitated by her comments and was very tempted to just leave. But decided to stay for the food. Our cook was AWESOME, by far the best show yet. He received a good tip. Our drinks got low and I didn't receive a refill. She sat another group on the other side of us and told them they can sit anywhere they wanted. This just upset me since she gave us a problem. I don't tip while using my card and usually leave cash. I didn't think she needed a tip anyways but I asked my husband if he left one and he ran back to give her a $5 tip (even though she didn't deserve it). He said she looked extremely mad because she wasn't left a tip when she was looking in the payment book. This is very unacceptable. I would normally give 5 (more if I could) stars for this restaurant but the waitress almost made us not want to come back. So I took two stars away because of her. I should have left her some advice about getting another career.

I eat here at least four times per week. Lunch or dinner, it doesn't matter- it's fantastic. They have amazing lunch sushi specials. The best ginger salad dressing ever, and I have a mad addiction to the yum-yum sauce!

The food is decent, but the service sucks. We waited ten to fifteen minutes to get our drinks (water). Yeah.

Umi is a solid Asian spot for the Shoals. The food: it doesn't hold a candle to Ichiban in Sheffield, but it was really good. I ordered the hibachi chicken, which came with mounds of fried rice, a ginger sauce and a white sauce (a.k.a yum-yum sauce), and loads of grilled veggies. I also ordered the Philadelphia roll. It was rolled really well, it didn't fall apart like most failing Asian restaurants. If you can't roll good sushi, then don't offer it. I don't want to have to eat all those parts individually, especially not the seaweed. It was salmon, avocado, and cream cheese. Very good. The lowdown: the chicken was a bit over cooked and didn't have enough of the sauce cooked in with it. The white sauce was too runny, I like it thicker and creamier. The veggies had little or no taste. The sushi was the highlight of the meal Good atmosphere, better entertainment. Our chef was hilarious. Umi is worth checking out. It can get a bit pricy, so be warned.

Was craving Asian food tonight! Had a bento box and spring rolls. Not a soup guy, but loved everything else. Teriyaki chicken was tasty, the crab was also. Calif rolls were fresh, tempura perfect, and I folded the rice into the teriyaki sauce! The spring rolls were very tasty!

It's a nicely decorated restaurant with an ambient atmosphere. Good, but not great Sushi. It'll certainly do when a sudden craving hits and I don't feel like driving all the way to Ichiban in Sheffield.

We love Umi. The price is a bit high, but if you like good sushi this is definitely the place to go. We always sit at the grille, and it is usually entertaining. I definitely recommend checking it out at least once if you have never been.

It was recognized the most gourmet restaurant in town. However, it's failed so fast. Sushi is not too bad, but it shouldn't be worth too much like that.

We wnt for a late lunch while in the process of moving and unpacking. The service was great, the atmosphere obviously had a lot of thought put into it and is very authentic (especially among Japanese restaurants in small US cities). We both had sushi, and were very pleased with what we got. Like some other reviewers said, it's not the best we've ever had, but it was quite good. We'll be back for a more thorough exploration of Umi at some point, for sure!

Having just moved here from Cali, I was a bit concerned about the quality of sushi here. I can say that while this wasn't the best I ever had.. It was by far not the worst. Nice atmosphere and helpful staff. Menu had a lot of variety... Overall very good.

Initially They had problems with staffing, but it seems to have improved. The cooks didn't let a spatula go flying toward an infant this time (disaster was averted). The food is acceptable, but not outstanding. The interior had quite a bit of thought and skillful detail in it's conception and execution. It is an attractive restaurant.

this was my favorite place to eat at one time, but it has new management and they are not friendly. They do not turn on the habachi at lunch unless you have a large party. The manager was very rude and has no business delaing with the public. I will miss the old UMI but will never go again as long as the present management is there.
