What everyone else said. Food amazing. Service friendly, helpful and prompt. Place clean, comfortable and colorful. Ceviche tostada, chorizo taco, another ceviche tostada. Waitress was happy to make a custom high-end margarita with patron silver and surprised me with green salt. Warm tasty chips. Three salsas. Too bad I'm merely passing through Birmingham!

I will start by saying I have little experience with "authentic" mexican food, but my wife and I really enjoyed this place. Our service was prompt and polite. I had a chorizo taco, al pastor tostada, and a tamale. My wife had a couple of tacos as well. The food was fresh and tasted good, but we both were left wanting a little more seasoning on the meats. The chips were cooked well and the salsa had a great flavor. The atmosphere was inviting and they had a mariachi band playing. All in all, we would love to come back and explore other items the menu.

Delicious! The guacamole and shrimp fajita quesadillas were so fresh and flavorful. I will definitely be returning to try other dishes. Great service! The margs, on the other hand, need some work... They were so sweet I could feel myself becoming pre-diabetic.

This place knows good Mexican. Delicious food and great service. Good lunch prices for a decent amount of fresh food. Go here!

We checked here in Yelp for a good Mexican place and decided to try this one since it had five stars. We were not disappointed! This is the best Mexican/Tex-Mex food we've had in the Birmingham area. The ingredients are fresh and the food is seasoned perfectly. The staff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is cozy. They even squeeze fresh limes for the margaritas! Oh, and ask for the salsa sampler! I can't wait to go back here. Good job guys! :-)

I am partial to a place I grew up with back home, but since I live in Birmingham now this is our go to spot. Tucked away in a shopping center is this little gem. Food is consistent and well flavored. Margaritas are good and salsa is fresh. Only problem is you almost have to beg for the salsa as they bring a tiny cup for 2 people. I go through one after about three chips. Plates are cool and staff is friendly. Would get a 5 star if they had better cheese dip and guac.

Taqueria Mexico 3724 Lorna rd Birmingham Al Behind Pizza Hut I stopped by recently one evening after work for dinner. It's behind the Pizza Hut on Lorna rd near the galleria. The parking was plentiful and the place only had a few customers but it was a Wednesday evening. Service was very friendly and the margaritas were strong. The food service was quick and the staff was distributed, helping the other servers when food or drink was ready. The bartender was quick and drinks obviously had a good pour. I had the queso and chips and salsa, both were delicious. Blanca served me well and was quick on refills and food service. I had the street tacos of which they have about six or seven varieties. It's such a simple but fulfilling meal. Flour tortilla and three different sauces all fresh made in the house. I had three different tacos, pork, al pastor and carnita. All were tasty and served with the prerequisite onions and cilantro. Yum! I will be going back here! Urban Cowgill

Seen this place on yelp and decided to give it a try.. Everything was great about it from the drinks and margaritas to the salsa and cheese dip.. The menu can be a bit pricey but for the amount of food you get and the quality. You can not beat it

This place lived up the the hype (the hype here on Yelp, since I definitely wouldn't have heard about the place otherwise). As others mentioned, you may be the minority here if you're not Hispanic--this is a good thing. Also want to reiterate all the comments about the service--impeccable. We had our 5 week old daughter with us and every employee who passed by our table stopped to compliment her and ask us about her. Very friendly and attentive when it came to our drinks, chips/salsa refills, etc. I ordered 3 tacos (chorizo, steak, carnitas) and wish I'd gone with all 3 chorizo. Great spice/flavor. Love street tacos with just onions and cliantro (let the meat shine!), and these were on point. Everyone else's meals looked great as well. Quality and quantity, AND great prices. Glad to find this place, and for its proximity to my house.

We went there for a late lunch. It's a reasonably priced lunch menu and the beverage cups are HUGE mugs. So that cool. There was nothing to complain about the food, but we got the basics... Chicken quesadilla and chicken chimichanga. It was good. When we have more time, we will definitely be more adventurous and grab something off of the specialties list or a quail dish that caught my eye. And I definitely need to try one of their LITER SIZE MARGARITAS!!!

We tried this restaurant due to Yelp recommendations and are glad that we did. The food and drinks were excellent. Ask for Berenice if you go because she is outstanding. The price seems reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food served. We started with the frozen gumbo Margarita at $9. Huge and excellent it is also available in other flavors. I liked the guava second best to the fresh lime. If you ask they will give you samples. All were made with fresh fruit and were very good. We tried several things on the menu and the outstanding dishes were Cabrito al Cameron (grilled young goat) and the pork Tostados Cameron. All of the food that we had was excellent. If you ask you can get three spices to go with the salsa. This consists of three pepper sauces cooked in the restaurant that are excellent but very fiery. Be very careful to see if you like it that spicy. I didn't have room but I love a good flan. I was really glad that I ordered it. The flavor was wonderful and it was large enough for everyone to have a generous portion. This is highly recommended. My recommendation is to go there and ask for Berenice (at least it is spelled that way on the receipt). Order a Jumbo frozen Margarita ($9) made with either lime or guava. Ask for the three spices to go with the good salsa. Order any meal that has Cameron's name on it. Save room for the excellent flan ($5). For about $30 you can walk out very full, happy and slightly intoxicated.

May great place to eat. Some of the menu items are a little in the pricey side for Mexican food but their authentic Mexican food menu is spot on. Finally a place that makes authentic tamales and knows how to serve tripa and lengua etc. And the service is great.

  • Greg W.

Excellent food. This is by far the best Mexican food that I have had in a long time. As has been previously mentioned, there are countless numbers of Mexican restaurants in the Birmingham metro area and sadly, they all are pretty much the same. Taqueria Mexico is a refreshing change from the mediocrity of the other restaurants that are claiming to serve Mexican food.

  • Reviewer P.

Use to be great, but atmosphere has gone downwards, and the service is not that great. The food is great, but expensive, and Tecate Bar and Grill provides the same product but with better price. Still not bad for authentic Mexican food, but Tecate in Vestavia has offered product for cheaper price.

  • Brandy B.

The service was very good. Very friendly staff. Food was delicious. A little surprised that it wasn't cheap based on some other reviews. I had 2 street tacos and hubby had 4 enchiladas. It was all good.

  • Justin L.

The street tacos are some of the best I've had in a very long time. I'm not from the area, and only came here because of the other reviews. The bartender was great, very quick service, and very attentive to your needs while it was very busy. I recommend this place to everyone that reads this.

  • Nichole F.

Fajitas were delicious and the service was wonderful! The place was a little hard to find by the map, they are located directly behind the Pizza Hut definitely worth the search!!

Best Mexican food in all of the US! They have stuff you can't find on most menus outside of central America! I suggest trying the tortas!

One of the best Mexican resturarants in Birmingham. The ceviche is fresh and amazing. Reasonably priced and great service.

  • Jay S.

Excellent food, atmosphere, and service. Be sure and ask for Diana. She's the best waitress we've ever had. Be sure and try their tacos for an appetizer, they are awesome! Also ask for Mango water!!

The first time I went the food was pretty good or maybe I was too drunk to tell the difference. On our second visit, not so good! We ordered steak fajitas, and the meat had a smell to it. When I told the bartender, he got defensive and instead of admitting it went on to lecture me about the quality of their meat. I guess he never took a crash course in customer service. Nevertheless... I wasn't asking for a refund, just wanted it corrected. After the lecture, my mom & I shared her meal and left the fajitas untouched. Truly disappointed and never going back. To be fair, The drinks are good and the portion sizes are large but taste wise I have def had better!

    (2)
  • Chris C.

This was my first time to eat here, and that may be the best chimichanga I've ever eaten. The food is delicious and the service was great too. I went for lunch. The meal was enough for 2 people to split, and only cost around $9.

Missing home, a visit to the south gave me "some" hope of finding true Mexican food. I say "Some", because it's not exactly bordering Mexico but, what the heck.... After an intensive search of yelp & trying to reach deep into psychology of self enamored reviewers, I come up with this place, as my best option. So the wife/I get in the rental car & track this place down. We make 2 consecutive visits. #1. The atmosphere is right! We have hope! #2. The chips & salsa are right! Please bring me the food!!!! My mouth is watering & it arrives. Good god it is wonderful! I'll forever remember this place as the building with the aura around it. Thank you! I can go back home to Vermont, satisfied....

The food was awesome! But the service could have been much better. We told our waitress when we were ordering for our meal that we also needed to place a to-go order for family members at home. She suggested that we wait. Well the food took a little while to come out and she forgot to get our to-go order We got done eating our meal and could not find our waitress. We were really in a hurry now because we have yet to place our to-go order and we are now ready to leave. What made things a little worse was that there was a manager just walking around doing absolutely nothing when he could have obviously been helping his servers. Oh wow then trying to put the second order on a second check we could tell this was for sure her first Rodeo! But good thing the food was good. I might come back in hopes of better service. Seriously, if this guy was a manager of one of my restaurants, I would fire him before the night is over.

  • Marla T.

WAY OVERRATED. Was it because I ordered a carry out instead of dining in? Maybe they rushed the order. I ordered spinach enchiladas and they were undercooked and barely digestible. The ones at Habanero's are better. I could have eaten at Habaneros and saved about five dollars. I'm not sure about the other dishes, but the dishes that my Husband and I had, were mediocre. If you want to eat here, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on the first visit because you may not like it and you may decide that you could have had the same quality by taking a trip up or down Highway 31 and visiting one of the other cheaper restaurants.

Awesome place its a jewel hidden in back of a Pizza Hut it's worth every penny owner and staff are nothing but top professional!!!

I really like this place. I just moved from AZ and this place has the authentic feel and food of the neighborhood places I am used to. I always eat at the bar and have the best service. The drinks are good - you have to try the tamarind margarita. Unbelievably good. Tacos are good. Fajitas are good. Definitely a place I go regularly. Great service too.

Thank you to the staff at Taqueria Mexico in Hoover, Alabama, for a wonderful dinner to celebrate our son's birthday. The food was delicious and arrived fast, the margaritas were delicious, and the friendly service was outstanding! We highly recommend you to anyone looking for a fun evening in Hoover.

  • Chris B.

This place is the real deal. Very sweet wait staff. We tried several different salsas, they all were fantastic. I wasn't brave enough for the habanero salsa though. I had Fajita Relleno, it was amazing. Price wasn't bad either, $30 for two. Dining partners Chile Relleno was perfect, he said. We will definitely be back!

    (5)
  • Dennis F.

Most Mexican restaurants are mostly the same with variations in the salsa and seasonings but mostly the same fare. We went to this place with a little higher expectations based on Yelp reviews but once there was completely impressed. The Fajita style Chile Relenno was excellent as was the Menudo. As others have mentioned, the extensive menu has the usual Tex-Mex but also authentic dishes and we had both. Can't wait to go back!

  • Catherine V.

This was our 2nd time there & yet again, it was all around delicious! Everything is made in-house and it shows! The spice level of the Camarones a La Diabla was perfect and it had a bit of mesquite aftertaste. The ceviche with mango was also really good (not leftover from the night before). Homemade tortillas, excellent. Their sangria's tasted a bit like blackberry, sweet but not too sweet. Thank-you to the staff. You are all wonderful!

  • Danielle S.

It was so good, we've already planned what to order the next time we come in. The jumbo margaritas we're a bit pricey at $9, but they we're pretty darn tasty. I might limit myself to the small from now on. The decor is well done. The strip mall that its located in is very unique. The businesses are all connected but have individually designed store fronts. It looks like a tiny village. We ordered steak fajitas and 2 street tacos. (Chorizo and lengua). I highly recommend the street tacos. Topped with cilantro and onion and served with a lime. Delicious!!

  • Juan C.

The service is really good , I'm eating right now at the restaurant, but we ordered tacos, chorizo, asada, pastor they were ok but not great, I consider they are expensive at $3.00 each they are small. The chicharron taco I did not like too soggy, I'm eating now tripa to see how it is, finished eating it, it was the best among them. I've eaten better Mexican food. But try it and make your own conclusion. For Me is debut and farewell.

We're slowly working our way through the menu. I recently had the grilled goat which was INSANELY GOOD. Don't freak out at the thought of a goat, get it and see how great the dish is. Nicely charred yet still tender, moist and flavorful. Be sure to ask for the habanero sauce.

The best Mexican food in the metro area is in this little place. Order off the traditional Mexican menu instead of the Americanized version for the best experience.

We love this place. Authentic and delicious. Come on a Sunday evening for Mariachi.

  • Ana D.

Great place for a Friday night date with hubby. The place is cozy enough for a date yet quite cheery. We started with the ceviche which was freshly prepared and flavorful. The margaritas were pretty good, but then again I'm not a real margarita connoisseur. My husband and I split the Texas fajita quesadilla which consisted of shrimp, chicken, steak, green peppers and onions. It was a nice blend! I love how it was light on the cheese which allowed for the full flavor of the main ingredients. It's definitely well worth it and the other items in the menu seem to be reasonably priced. Can't wait to take our teenage kids with us next time.

Great food! Excellent service! Awesome drinks! Promise you won't be disappointed. It looks like a hole in the wall but don't be deceived. The lamb, quail, rellenos, and chimichangas were all amazing. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone.

  • Wesley W.

Service was pretty bad... It took them very long to get my wife and I everything we wanted. Had to ask them for everything, like refills on chips and salsa, drinks, and getting the check. Ordered a burrito that said on the menu it was large, but it was not at all... And the beans and rice were lukewarm... Just didn't have a very good experience at this restaurant.

  • Lou G.

Holy shit those were good Huevos Rancheros! Had a chance to grab lunch here, probably best meal I had in Birmingham this week. Chips and salsa were decent, the rice and beans were solid. The Huevos Rancheros were done the classic way, on top of corn tortillas in a great sauce. Service was friendly, not over the top. No draft beer is only negative. Too bad this place is 3 hours away from me, but will definitely hit them up again on my next visit! Muy bueno!

  • Tom M.

Thank you Yelp for letting me know about this place. Birmingham is blessed with an abundance of good Mexican. It certainly doesn't get better than this. If you want gringo Mexican, this may not be up your ally. If you want the standard beef fajitas, you can get those anywhere. But if you are open to tripe or beef tounge tacos, make a B-line. They are INCREDIBLE! They are so good that after eating here once, I decided to have my Birthday meal here. (Last years was celebrated at Hot & Hot.)

  • G M.

Still figuring out the places around here, but this is as close as I have found to Mexican food in Alabama. This was a good find. Ordered the carnitas and they came out tender and cooked well. The onions underneath had no spices and the meat was served without any sauce, just the meat. I am used to either gravy, red or green sauce offered, but none the less it was good. The rice was good, not great, and the charro beans tasted like taco spices were added to it. Something out of El Paso mix bag. :) The tortillas were a bit gummy but still good experience over all. The chips were warm, the salsa was mild heat. I asked the lady in Spanish where she would go to eat if she was hungry, she pointed out a few places but said Taqueria Mexico was the best. She asked my view on the food after she asked where I was from, I was honest and she appreciated it. If you have read my reviews, Service wins all the time, and everyone was very attentive. She did say they were the best. Hmmm, I might have peaked to soon on my search??! This will have to do for now.

  • Christopher B.

While the fish tacos were really good, the tacos al pastor and carnitas were fantastic. Most folks should enjoy the freshly made warm chips with salsa. Served up in a generous portion too. The house Margarita is good, but not extraordinary, certainly better than average, maybe two would be better. The Norteno (think Mexican polka) music soundtrack brings to mind a outdoor party or a wedding reception which fits perfectly with festive interior and the friendly service. This awesome little gem is hidden behind a Pizza Hut in funky strip of shops that are meant to look like a Disney-esque village with not an overwhelming amount of parking but worth the quest!

  • Randy F.

Thanks to the my fellow Yelpers for the awesome reviews on this place. It did not disappoint. I order the authentic tacos one asada and the other chorizo. They were delicious and the blackberry water was on point. The margaritas are a must, but beware of the salsa samplers that come with the chip and regular dip they are incredibly hott! I know some if not most enjoy really hot food, but I'll pass. I will definitely be back to visit this place and the ice cream place a couple of doors down.

  • Joshua S.

We were the only gringos in the entire place!! I can't thank my fellow yelpers enough for this recommendation. The food was much better than 5 out of 5. Everything was hot, portions large, and it was all real. I feel like every sh*tty Mexican restaurant in Birmingham I have been to owes me a refund. You honestly will never go back to your "old favorite place." Does your current favorite Mexican spot make their own tortillas? I didn't think so... Furthermore, my friend Paul was particularly pleased with the service. (See photos for explanation) The music was mexi, drinks were intoxicating, and the setting casual. I will admit that the location was somewhat difficult to find at night, and Kimmie had questions as to the alcohol content of her margarita... The restrooms are very small, but clean; insignificant complaints if any could be formed. The bartender asked us "how did you guys find out about this place?" I replied "Yelp." He said "ah, jelp." :) His english is very poor, and I loved it! He pretended to understand and thats all that maters. I pretended to understand him too. I will be here again, there is absolutely no better place to get authentic Mexican in Birmingham. But don't take a gringo's advice, ask the real Mexican-Americans at the next table.

First off, on Sunday night they have a Mariachi type group who play during dinner. They were very talented, but extremely loud in a rather enclosed space. So if that's what you're looking for (or trying to avoid), take note. Also, if you walk in and find that you are the only non-Hispanics in the restaurant, you know you're getting some excellent and authentic Mexican food. And no other two words describe it more accurately. I enjoyed the variety of salsas, exceptionally better and more distinguished than your average El Paso Picante brand. And I recommend ordering from the authentic selections, even if you're not sure. You must try the Tripas Taco. Get it extra crispy, just don't ask what it is. If you like bacon you'll love it!

I really like this family-run restaurant that is tucked away in a small strip center in Hoover. I had the lunch special #10, Burrito al Carbon, and I thought it was great. The flour tortilla was soft, fresh, and covered with a white cheese sauce. The cheese was not heavy or overwhelming. The burrito was fIlled with a generous portion of grilled and chopped steak. The steak was seasoned and very flavorful. The meat was perfectly cooked and very tender. The lunch dish includes rice and beans and both were good.

  • Katie M.

Really, really excellent food. They scored high marks for the three things I judge a Mexican restaurant by: beans, rice, and tamales. the tamales are WAY bigger than any others I've ever had, delicious with well-seasoned meat, luscious masa, wrapped in a banana leaf (I think), and you can't go wrong for $3.50. Before I saw the tamale I was surprised that their tamales are actually about $1 more than average tamale prices, normally I would order two because most tamales are small. I got just the one to test it and I was not disappointed, completely worth an extra dollar. The beans and rice, while not as good as my favorite haunt, Bandito Burrito of Huntsville, are flavorful and a good texture. The beans are more whole than refried, but somehow still well-seasoned. They didn't have the dominant, flat pork flavor that too many restaurants add to theirs. I wonder if they might even be vegetarian! I was worried I wouldn't find good Mexican food in Birmingham, but I will be the newest regular at Taqueria Mexico.

Well priced lunch menu! I decided to get take out. It was a very quick process. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed. It almost screams that you have a margarita. I ended up getting the taco salad. I asked if there was a difference between the lunch taco salad and the normal one and the only difference is the price. It was huge and delicious! There were huge chunks of chicken. If you don't like sour cream you should ask for it without. Even if you are only partial to sour cream, ask for it without, because they throw on a glob of sour cream. I also got guacamole. It was pretty good also. Overall I enjoyed this meal. I would recommend this place to people.

  • Chris A.

Very nice, great service and reasonably priced. The salsa is outstanding and the chips are the thicker type that are closer to actual Mexican chips. Entrees are larger and I personally recommend the Margaritas. First time here, out of town on business. Nice and quite. Give them a shot.

I used to have a fav in a larger, more well-known Mexi joint about a mile down the road but I'm definitely a Taqueria convert! The place is small and somewhat tight honestly, but as Will has pointed out... the 2 or 3 times I've been here, it's never crowded, which is very strange! They definitely receive steady business, however. I love to order nachos at Mexi-Joints, even more traditional ones such as this place. The flavors are so amazing (chicken and beef)! Serving size to price ratios are perfect. Other menu items live up to high standards as well. I honestly don't have anything bad at all to say here... If you're a Mexi-food lover, please do yourself a favor and give Taqueria a shot... I don't think you'll be disappointed at all!

We went for the first time a few weeks ago after reading Will's review and absolutely loved it! I got the ceviche tostada and chorizo taco and both were delicious. I was amazed at the freshness of the ceviche for $3! You can't beat that. The citrus flavors were strong and it was absolutely perfect. The chorizo taco was amazing as well. The taco just had one tortilla (instead of the two you see at other places) which held perfectly cooked chorizo topped with fresh cilantro and onion. It was delicious with some of their salsa on top. Seriously, a great meal for $5. Went back today for a quick lunch and just had 2 chorizo tacos as well as chips & guac. Delicious again. Aside from their food being great, the service is wonderful! I've had a great, kind waitress both times. The manager/owner came out today, greeted us, and made sure we enjoyed our meal. He also asked if he could bring me new tacos because I had waited a little bit before I ate mine and he thought the chorizo needed to be eaten warm. Such a kind gesture! PS The chorizo taco was even great at room temperature! If you are ever near this area and even if you aren't, I HIGHLY recommend this place! So long as their food and service continue, I will be a very frequent customer. Can't wait to go back!

I've been to ALOT of Mexican restaurants and this is by far is the BEST Mexican food I've had in years!! Food was More authentic than most Mexican restaurants I've eaten at, and the staff was wonderful too. They would've gotten 5 Stars but my second drink wasn't as good as my first, but it was still good. I am looking forward to another visit!!

The best tamale I've had in Birmingham and for the price you just can't go wrong! Burritos and enchiladas were delicious and the queso dip is a must have! If you want authentic Mexican food, this restaurant is a must. You will not be disappointed!

  • Nancy S.

This is the only Mexican restaurant my husband and I will even go to and I can't believe I haven't written a review so here it is. This awesome place is located off Lorna Rd close to Hwy 31 and behind Pizza Hut. As some have mentioned tucked away in this small shopping center. Just so we could be up-to-date with a review, we went here for lunch. I know lame excuse but whatever! It was/is fantastic. We had Dianne for our waitress and she was over the top excellent. They serve you chips and salsa but they have a plate with 2 more, used to be 3, if you want hotter stuff and it's free. She's kind of dangerous because she recommends stuff you just didn't know you had to try. She also brought us stuff to try like mango water, rice water (yum), and a small bean & queso dip. I had a street taco with carnitas (pork) and my husband had a sopa both were so good we weren't sure why we'd never tried them before. For my meal I had huevos rancheros and my husband had some beef stew from their "only on weekend authentic Mexican food grouping", both were ridiculously good. As someone mentioned, they do have a few dishes that serve 2+ people that are expensive but they also serve like the whole table. I did see the $70 meal that feeds a family of 4. My meal was $7 and hubbies was $14, I'd say middle of the road prices. What I love about this place is they have the regular Mexican food stuff: burritos, enchiladas, tacos but they have 2 pages or more that are dedicated to authentic Mexican food that you won't see at other places. Someone on here posted their menu so take a look and go you won't be disappointed. Also ask for Dianne she's great and very attentive!

HORRIBLE . Waaaaaayyy overpriced. Never have we paid $16-22 for blah Mex food. Some dishes were $70-80 (menu said for 2 but that is still very expensive). I ordered the chile relllenos which was $12. Plain ground beef in poblano with cheese. Very bland. My boyfriend ordered 2 pork tacos and have never seen such a small tortilla, let alone such a small amount of ingredients. Pic is with my boyfriend's pinky finger and one "taco". He's 6'-7" so his hand is not tiny but still. Service was OK but when we called attention to our disappointment the sever just laughed. The $13 cheese dip with chorizo was tasty.

The BEST MEXICAN restaurant in ALL of Birmingham. This is a FACT! Everything I have tried at Taqueria Mexico has exceeded my expectations. I have tried the chorizo, carnitas, al pastor "street style" tacos, chorizo sopas, chicken/steak/shrimp fajitas, chicken fajita quesadilla and queso dip. The hype is real. The food is awesome. Update: Still the Best Mexican in town!

I really liked the fact that they were able to seat us pretty quickly with six people. Nice atmosphere but honestly I was a little disappointed in our meal. It must have been an off night and they did have two other large parties but the service staff was knowledgeable, friendly and eager to attend to our needs. Margaritas were good but did not pack a punch with the alcohol content. All in all good service, cool atmosphere but the food was standard fare in my book. If you really want good Mexican food the place to go is in Oxford, AL called "Mexico Lindo", it is absolutely worth the drive and I believe one over near Mountain Brook but I have not tried that one. I like Oxford and I stop there when I drive back from Atlanta to get Lotto tickets!

Wow! This place is amazing! I likes this more than any of the Mexican places I went to while living in DC, Atlanta, Charlotte or Chicago. The frozen strawberry margarita was the best ever! The guac was perfect. I asked the waitress what I should order. I got a chicken dish that came with cheese and grilled onions and green peppers on top. It was soooooo good!! I highly recommend. I don't even like green peppers and I enjoyed them in this dish. They had a mariachi band like you see in the movies of people on vacation in Mexico. Also the service blew us away. You have to go here! It is a hole in the wall but so amazing!!

Oh man, I adore this place! I was in BHam for work (visiting the awesome CM Will L), and when he asked if I was in the mood for Mexican food, I gave him a big thumbs up. He said he had a hole-in-the-wall place in mind that had killer margaritas, so I was excited to check it out. The best part about Taqueria Mexico has to be the awesome service and at-home feel. The staff was so nice and welcoming, and genuinely excited to talk about the menu items, margaritas, and really whatever we wanted to know. They made our dining experience so much fun. And, yes, the margaritas are killer. Prepare to have a bigtime buzz about halfway through your first one. The salsa is fantastic, but you have to ask for the tray of spicy salsa. Word of warning, the orange-colored one will burn the crap out of your mouth. We did it right and ordered guac, and that paired with the spicy selections was a great start to our dinner. For my entree, I had the chile relleno vegetarian style. They don't usually make it without meat, but were more than happy to stuff it with spinach, cheese, mushrooms, and other fresh items. I was seriously so happy with everything I ordered... my mouth was on fire the entire time, but I didn't even care. The chile relleno came with rice and beans, too, and it was all some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while. I'll totally be coming here the next time I'm in Birmingham. Great little spot with awesome food and an even better staff! I'll be dreaming of my frozen margarita for a while.

So far, pretty good. This was my first visit and there were some highs and lows. The service was excellent. The chips and salsa were also good. The beef taco was the best one I've had in Hoover. It was a standard crispy ground beef taco and the flavor was excellent. The beans and rice was also great. The cheese enchilada was just OK. The sauce was good, but the cheese quality was so-so. I'm a picky cheese enchilada eater, so you might prefer this type of cheese - it's definitely a more tex-mex/processed type cheese in the enchilada. I know some people that love that type of cheese, but I prefer shredded cheddar or "real" cheese in my enchilada. The cokes came in massive chilled glasses - an added bonus. I would definitely go back and try some other menu items. The prices were just OK. Don't expect great value, but the quality of service and some of the menu items make it worth the price point.

Loved this place! We were able to check this out for a laid-back dinner last weekend and we had a great time. My short review is that the food is fantastic, the drinks are large and strong, the staff is enthusiastic and charming, the location is convenient, clean, and welcoming. After being warmly greeted by what seemed like the entire staff, we settled into a comfy booth. Chips, salsa, and margaritas arrived quickly. From there, we decided upon the delicious freshly-made guac and a selection of spicy sauces that could be added to make your salsa or guac as spicy as you please. And spicy they shall be! Like, really spicy. It took me an inordinately long time to decide upon my order. When I finally locked in on something, it was a combo dinner with one chicken enchilada and one chorizo taco. Here's the embarrassing truth: I could not stop eating. The food was so good that I continued to eat for a while after I was full. This is a bad habit I worked hard to fight against for years, but sometimes, especially when in unfamiliar, unsuspecting locales, I fail and give way to just eating as much delicious enchilada/cheese/beans/rice/chorizo as humanly possible, up to the point that I seem socially awkward. Totally worth it... If I lived here, this would be my low-key Friday night go-to.

You know your in the real deal Mexican restaurant when there is tongue and intestine offered on the taco menu! I wasn't that daring but I had the all pastor, chorizo, and carnitas tacos all for $9. All were filled to the brim with flavor but the carnitas were hands down my favorite...juicy, tender, salty, spiced pork..so good! I had not had tacos this good since eating street tacos in Mexico. The hot sauces were also fresh and amazing. I think this place offers a good mix of authentic fare and Tex Mex. My husband loved his chicken and cheese quesadilla with sour cream..me, not so much :) very quick and helpful wait staff too!

The food was great! Order from the 100% Mexican menu. Our waitress was awesome! The margaritas and atmosphere were average, but the food is reason alone to go. The chorizo tacos were best thing we had. Did I mention how awesome the waitress was??

Without question, five stars. Since last fall, this has been my go-to spot for any taking anyone to dinner. The more people I can introduce to this place, the better. In my previous review I spoke about the chorizo tacos being the best I've ever had. That still stands. On top of the ridiculously good flavor, I love the fact that they aren't covered in cheese. The simple onions and cilantro is plenty. Why would you want to mask the chorizo? Knowing I need to branch out on the menu, I ordered the ceviche for our table. So fresh... so good. Aside from the food and margaritas being the real deal, the service here is hard to top. Every employee I've ever dealt with seems genuinely kind. I can't say enough good things about these people. I would compliment them by name, if I happened to know their names.

I've been going to this place for years. It used to be kind of a hole in the wall (with great food!) but over the years their atmosphere has really improved. We went on a Sunday and there was a mariachi band. I got the tacos from the "100% Mexican" part of the menu. They were tasty. I also got a side that another yelp reviewer suggest.. Forgot the name but it was fruit and tomatoes on top of a hard flat shell with an avocado, so good! The food was very authentic. The only negative part was that it took 45 minutes to get our food. People came in after us and got served before us. They were apologetic, but it was an extraordinarily long wait.

WowwieBazowie! I don't give a lot of 5 star reviews...But, this one is SO Legit!. I'm once again so grateful to fellow Yelpers for great info. My experience was " Yeah, what all of THEM said"! Dinner was outstanding. We were greeted at the door and got over the top wonderful service for our entire stay. And the food...OMG!!! We tried a little bit of several items off of the true "Mexican" part of the menu. All of them were so YUMMY. Chorizo Torta- great! Ceveche Tostadas- both fish and shrimp were DELISH, several tacos-El Pastor was so very good! We can't wait to go back for more and more and more...

Delicious!!

Use to be great, but atmosphere has gone downwards, and the service is not that great. The food is great, but expensive, and Tecate Bar and Grill provides the same product but with better price. Still not bad for authentic Mexican food, but Tecate in Vestavia has offered product for cheaper price.

The street tacos are some of the best I've had in a very long time. I'm not from the area, and only came here because of the other reviews. The bartender was great, very quick service, and very attentive to your needs while it was very busy. I recommend this place to everyone that reads this.

We're slowly working our way through the menu. I recently had the grilled goat which was INSANELY GOOD. Don't freak out at the thought of a goat, get it and see how great the dish is. Nicely charred yet still tender, moist and flavorful. Be sure to ask for the habanero sauce.

Muy bueno!

What everyone else said. Food amazing. Service friendly, helpful and prompt. Place clean, comfortable and colorful. Ceviche tostada, chorizo taco, another ceviche tostada.

Muy bueno!

Delicious!!

Use to be great, but atmosphere has gone downwards, and the service is not that great. The food is great, but expensive, and Tecate Bar and Grill provides the same product but with better price. Still not bad for authentic Mexican food, but Tecate in Vestavia has offered product for cheaper price.

The service was very good. Very friendly staff. Food was delicious. A little surprised that it wasn't cheap based on some other reviews. I had 2 street tacos and hubby had 4 enchiladas. It was all good.

The street tacos are some of the best I've had in a very long time. I'm not from the area, and only came here because of the other reviews. The bartender was great, very quick service, and very attentive to your needs while it was very busy. I recommend this place to everyone that reads this.

Fajitas were delicious and the service was wonderful! The place was a little hard to find by the map, they are located directly behind the Pizza Hut definitely worth the search!!

  • Lane A.

Delicious! The guacamole and shrimp fajita quesadillas were so fresh and flavorful. I will definitely be returning to try other dishes. Great service! The margs, on the other hand, need some work... They were so sweet I could feel myself becoming pre-diabetic.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
