Stopped in for lunch while traveling - had the lunch special for $6.99 ordered chicken burrito and a soft beef taco. Chips were fresh and thin - salsa was pretty good. Received my lunch and thought it looked a bit skimpy. The burrito was not chicken and was covered in a thick cheese sauce. Flavor was OK - Taco shell was thin and crisp and pretty good. I am used to inexpensive Mexican lunches where you get beans and other items on the plate- this place only had a sprinkle of lettuce and diced tomatoes. Overall for the price of the lunch special with soft drink $10 was high for the quantity and quality of the food.

It's okay place but the food not good it was cold and not a lot of food for the over price. The drinks and service are better

It's Cinco de Mayo, you have four tables open and you tell me for a party of two it's going to be an hour and a half wait. I ask why, and you tell me it's because the kitchen is way behind. Wouldn't you think it would be smart to bring in extra staff on Cinco de Mayo when you're a Mexican restaurant. Just wondering?

Geez...where do I start? This was such a blah experience that I joined Yelp to forewarn others. I came on on a Saturday around 130pm. I only saw one other group eating inside the place. You'd think service would be on point, but I waited almost 20 minutes before my server came to take my order. She seemed busy with the other less than happy group of patrons. The food was lackluster at best. They use mozzarella cheese in their tacos and quesadillas. I'm pretty sure I didn't want a grilled cheese! To further sour the experience, I asked for water instead of coke as my refill and she didn't even pour out the glass. When brought back, it had 2" of coke in the bottom. Gross. I'm not sure if the server was just lazy or didn't care. I'll not be coming back!

Went to the place tonight. We ordered the cheese dip with the salsa and chips. When the salsa, chips and cheese came out...... We dug in right away. The salsa was ok. Not great but it did have chunks of onion and tomato. Just not enough garlic and spiciest for me. I ordered the Choripollo and it was fantastic! I have had this a few times before and I have never been disappointed. It comes with beans and salad. I also ordered a tamale. It came out and it was thickly coated with meal and it was more like cornbread with a little meat in the center. I did not like it..... But I have rarely ever found tamales from a commercial place that were near good. Living in Texas has spoiled me for life on tamales. I always enjoy this place and I think the servers are GREAT. Very attentive and always there for reference or suggestions. They have a very good selection in their menu and I have never had anything bad from here.

Don't EVER order delivery! Even with a second party delivery service waiting two hours for food is ridiculous. #shouldhaveorderedroomseevice still waiting #cardsalreadybeencharged

The service is not so great and neither is the food. When they first opened everything was fresh and the wait staff was awesome. The last two times I went this was not the case. Which is a bummer I really used to like this place.

Went during lunch hour and had no problem being seated immediately. Slight delay in food to table but only due to being freshly prepared. I had the lunch special #6 Chicken Enchilada and Pork Tamale. Enchilada was very good, Tamale was average. Only real complaints were the straws provided with drink are too short for glasses and had to ask for change to leave tip. Would definitely try again.

Bleh! Nearly empty at 7pm on a Saturday night. Had a different menu than what was on their website. Menus were dirty, they didn't have some of the items on the menu and the food was simply not good. Soggy quesadillas, quest even bad.

Wow. I didn't know you could ruin refried beans but this place managed to without effort. First we were seated without menues. Our drink order was taken then about several minutes of waiting, our chips and salsa arrived, which were good. I had to go get our menues, silverware and napkins. Drinks were slow arriving but cold. Waitress couldn't answer questions regarding menu, food just "OK". For the price and taste, look elsewhere!!!

"Go to La Catrina for cinco de mayo," they said. "It will be fun," they said. I will probably never come back here. I would only come back MAYBE if I had an intense enchilada craving and they were the only place in Birmingham serving them. We walked in and weren't greeted by a hostess for 10 minutes. Then we waited another 25 for a table. I understand being busy but nobody was even at the front trying to help the long line of people wanting to put their name down. We finally got seated (I'm writing this while still here waiting for the check by the way), and ordered some drinks. Their house margarita consists of tequila flavored vodka- no thank you señor. I ordered some burrito that sounded awesome on the menu- it came with beef and sour cream. Yes, that's all. I wanted to like this place. I wanted to enjoy my time here and drink a lot of margaritas but.... We can't always get what we want. On the plus side, I love the lighting here. Awesome star lanterns everywhere. Oh, and the manager did apologize without me having to complain about anything, so thank you manager! 5 stars for you Glen Coco, you go Glen Coco.

I really wanted this place to be good. The workers appear to work hard, but the food is just "eck." IF it were freshly made (a big if) it is also stored and reheated. OUr salsa cam eout to us ice old and watery. They could've at least shaken up the Sam's Club can before they dipped it out, I was just dipping my chip into red nasty juice. It is easy to see that the owner is tryin to deal with staying open, employing persons, and dealing with what is probably a ridiculous overhead. I'd suggest making the place more like Cocina Superior. Keep it laid back, but switch up the interior, make one side a bar with a band and the other side the resturaunt. Have liquor specials, regular plus some known music, etc. But cutting price in the food is noticeable It is so noticeable that I am writing this review from the couch, where i fell immediately upon coming home because I felt like throwing up from shortly after eating a third of my reheated, or straight out of can meal until just now.

Wonderful experience. From the chips and salsa to the variety of entrees my party ordered the food was fresh and delicious. The staff was friendly and the portions were very generous! If your wanting a more authentic take on Mexican food I highly suggest La Caterina. P.S. Read the story on the back of the menu.

Service was very good but the food was so bland I could hardly eat it. A dry piece of chicken rolled up in a burrito with absolutely no spices and a boring melted cheese over it. Boring!

Eh, everything was way over salted. Table clothes were unnecessary and certainly not washed nightly. The place has potential but it's subpar for sure. Service was good.

Fish tacos are fantastic. After driving in the major snow storm if 2014 it took over 7 hours to drive 5.5 miles. Lucy the waitress is very up beat, great smile & just made our night better. Thank You

This ambience of this place was very nice. Almost felt upscale based upon the location. The downside was the food. The ground beef had absolutely no flavor to it and the chips were super thin. Doubt I'll go back.

I have been going there for lunch quite often with my coworkers. The first time we ordered lunch fajitas. The fajitas have 3x as much onions and peppers as they do meat. I then decided to get the order of dinner fajitas, in which the same thing happened, except I got a larger portion of each. We brushed this off and decided to give this place another shot. I ordered the dinner fajitas at lunch again, and when they arrived I asked for extra salsa with my meal, in which the waitress (who was sitting down and talking with another table next to me when not serving) told me that she had already done us a favor by giving us 2 salsas, and that another salsa I would have to pay for. We had a party of 3, and only received 2 salsas the entire meal. I have NEVER been to a Mexican Restaurant where you have to pay for salsa and chips after a certain amount. We tried to give this place multiple chances, and we will not be returning. Mexico Lindo is far superior.

Never seen a Mexican restaurant without frozen margarita options. No frozen margaritas=last visit for me!

I recently visited La Catrina while on my lunch break and since I noticed they had a lunch menu I decided I'd give it a try. I ordered one of the lunch combos and while waiting for my food I ate chips and salsa. The chips were very thin, however the salsa that came with them was really good. Also, I ordered a sweet tea. The sweet tea at La Catrina was awesome, and it came in a huge glass too. There was so much tea left-over I was able to get a to-go glass. Once my lunch combo came "chicken enchilada with rice and beans" I was a bit surprised because of the small portion size, only one chicken enchilada which was quite small. Overall it tasted good, but if I visit again, I am unlikely to order the same thing because of the size.

My wife and I just stumbled upon this place and decided to take a chance on them. Every Mexican restaurant in town is more of the same, but not this place. The staff was prompt, friendly, and spoke prefect English. The menu was the best I've seen, lots of amazing traditional dishes and many I have never heard of, we loved how descriptive all the menu items were. The fondidio was superb, with plenty of cheese and just enough chorizo. Best guacamole I have ever had that wasn't homemade. I ordered the Bistec en Pasilla, the steak was cooked to perfection, and the herbed creamy potatoes blew my mind. My wife had the Bistec Ranchero, she said it set her mouth on fire in a good way, with a very flavorful heat. The steak was tender, juicy and delicious. That is a great compliment from her as she is particular about food. (She is a culinary genius) On a side note, anyone who thinks the portions are too small and pricey must be overweight or poor, probably both. Any healthy person would be filled up and have more to take home. The atmosphere freaking rocked, great mix of music, that was sexy versitile, and it didnt sound like a generic Mexican restaurant mix CD that every other Mexican place has on repeat. We will come back often. I believe this is the Best Mexican fare in Birmingham.

Great food, pretty pricey for small queso dip at $4 and a TINY queso fundido for $7. For these prices at other Mexican restaurants you get much more. They charged $1 for 3 flour tortillas. I got the Pescado a la Venezuelana and it was awesome. Well seasoned and nice sized portion of fish and shrimp. My husband got the carnitas tostadas and the pork wasn't seasoned very well. The reason we give it a 4 is because they have a lot more variety and more traditional Mexican dishes than other Mexican places in town. My biggest suggestion is way more cheese in the queso fundido. It's my favorite and it is supposed to have lots of cheese and a little chorizo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
