This is a great, laid back, neighborhood spot. It has excellent food that comes with friendly, personable service. The food is reasonably priced and comes out quickly.

Food is good, if they ever get your order right. Been there 3 times for take out, and everytime I get home my order is wrong. Maybe they don't understand English? I will not be going back, ever.

They say some of the best Mexican places are the little "hole in the wall" places. "They" must have been talking about La Bamba grill on Oxmoor Road in Homewood's Edgewood neighborhood. Decor is nothing fancy and the kitchen is right behind an aluminum partition in the dining room. There are a few tables available on the sidewalk outside the restaurant. The menu is basic Mexican fare--but it's authentically prepared and done well. Chips are not greasy and the salsa has a good kick to it. Lunch shrimp fajitas were excellent and reasonably priced at $8.89. Guacamole served on the side plate was fresh and tasty. Beans and rice are standard fare. La Bamba is a great choice if you're looking for a nice neighborhood Mexican restaurant.

I give them 1 star because they are open for business the other star is for the strong margarita. Otherwise, this place es muy terrible! #worstMexicanFoodEver!

La Bamba is typical gringo mex that is very family friendly. The service is prompt and courteous. The menu is small but the food is good. If you are looking for authentic Mexican or a more complete menu, Taqueria Mexico in Hoover would be my recommendation. If you want a comfortable neighborhood joint with quesadillas and fajitas, then La Bamba is right up your alley.

Great Mexican restaurant I tried out today in Homewood. I had the La Bamba burrito with grilled chicken. It was great! Cheese dip with ground hamburger is Called "La Bamba" dip. Very tasty and unique. Chips were homemade and hot. I could not find better salsa anywhere else. Clean and fun atmosphere. Got to watch the Euro qualifier their between Sweden and Finland. Soccer and good food. What more could a guy ask for? Looking forward to coming back soon.

Definitely worth the time, and more than worth the money. Was overnighting in B-ham and my wife wanted Mexican, so we picked it off of Yelp. La Bamba is in a walking neighborhood, hard to spot in a strip of stores featuring Saw's Barbecue and NY Pizza. Parking was easy, and walked right in. 9 of the 12 tables were full of folks, and workmen were hanging a new bigscreen TV. The World Cup was beginning the next day, and you NEED a third TV for such an occasion, I guess. They had also hung beer flags, and ordered cases of beer from each of the competing nations, Just shows that the owners were thinking, and playing heads-up ball. The interior needs the help, because its very old school. Not their fault, you create an environment in what's available. Its a high-ceiling, exposed pipe, utility stuff in the back box--but they're trying to make it fit the genre. It didn't take away from the visit, mainly because of the FOOD!! The chips are, well chips, but the salsa was wonderul, and I am a salsa snob. Even got more just in case I needed it down the line. I had the carne arsada, my wife had the fajita chicken and steak quesadilla. Both were well cooked and full of flavor. The food came out surprisingly quickly. The steak actually had a spicy touch to it which I appreciated, and her dish danced in your mouth, which is what good Mexican food is supposed to do. To me, all Mexican food side dishes (the refried beans, orange colored rice) taste the same. I did not change my mind here on that front. And the prices this visit were amazingly cheap! I don't remember hers, but my steak was 10 bucks. She had two maragarits, we ordered entrees, I had a DC, and the bill was 37 bucks. Can't beat that. Definitely worth a return visit for us, as the food, prices, and 'want-to' of the young owners make this a rising gem in the Homewood area of the Magic City.

The salsa and chips are definitely above average. Everything else was about average. I don't think either my wife or I actually got what we ordered, but we were in a rush with 2 temperamental kids so who has time to worry about that. Prices were good. It will do if you are looking for decent mexican.

Luckily for La Bamba, I care a lot about taste and service, while not caring a ton about decor. It's possibly the worst looking eatery I've been to in recent memory. Not in a dirty way, just plain, bare bones brick and mortar. All the servers are really friendly and fast. The chips and salsa were on the table immediately and our drink orders soon followed. Keeping with the "not so fancy" theme, the margaritas are served in a plastic cup. Here's why I don't care: It was one of the better margaritas in town. It didn't taste pre-made like many others. I got the fajitas and was pleasantly surprised. The time before, I'd remembered being disappointed in the serving size. This time was different. The portions were huge and the meat was delightfully flavorful. Keep up the good food and service, but maybe throw a pinate up or something.

Needs exhaust fans to get kitchen smoke out of building. Carnitas were very dry and needed salsa poured over them. Servers were nice and prompt and the only reason I bumped to a 3 star.

Fantastico!!!! I absolutely love La Bambas margaritas!! And I don't drink alcohol, but when I go I must get 1 margarita on the rocks with salt and a Bamba dip! Btw there chips are the best ive ever had. I asked why they taste so good and Carlos the owner I believe said they change the oil on a regular basis so the quality of the chip stays high. I love quality and restaurants. It's a great combo!!

Like this place. Casual atmosphere and pretty good food. Chips and salsa one of my family's favorites. Had the spinach enchiladas which were good, not great. Wife had fajitas that she said was excellent. Kids devoured their burritos and quesadillas. Thanks LaBamba. We'll be back.

Easily one of the top Mexican restaurants in Birmingham. Most Mexican restaurants in Birmingham will have better decor, but few, if any, are equal in taste. La Bamba boasts fresh salsa, light and crisp chips, good-sized portions, flavorful dishes, and quick and friendly service. If you have a craving for Mexican food in Birmingham, look no further.

We dined at La Bamba this Saturday, the 30th, arriving at about 2:00 P.M. Except for one other table of people, we were the only ones inside. There was at least one table being waited on outside. The decor in this restaurant is basic, inexpensive and sparse, but the food is very good and fresh. Recently, I have been very disappointed in two very popular mexican food restaurants in Birmingham and have been on the look out for a replacement. I may have found one here. Service was quick and friendly, but with so few customers that was kind of easy. Unlimited chips and salsa were served, which is the norm for mexican eateries. However, these were made in house. Salsa was medium hot and had a very attractive flavor. I ordered 3 beef tacos wrapped in soft corn tortillas. They came with sour cream and fresh lettuce. Nothing was oversalted or overspiced. I would rate the food as very good. The tacos were only 4.65. My wife got a combination plate with a cheese enchilada, bean chalupa, rice and beans for 7.29. Her food was also very good. I tasted the enchilada sauce and could detect a flavor very similar to, but lighter than a full mole sauce. I would say it had some chocolate in it. I thought it was very good. I have no complaints about the food or service. They do not serve Coca-Cola products. They have 9 kinds of beer and 3 flavors of margaritas. This probably would not be a good place for a large group meeting. Also, the restaurant could fill up very easily with so few tables, and, that could produce waits in extremely busy times. The food, though, is way above the quality of the two popular Birmingham places I alluded to. I have written a review for one of those which you may read by checking out my other reviews on this site. You can eat here for the same price as a fast food venture. Our entire meal was 13.01 before tax and tip. Tax here is 9%.

Don't judge La Bamba on looks alone! This might be a hole-in-the-wall mexican joint, but their salsa is seriously on point! You can take a seat inside or outside if the weather's nice. The menu is pretty standard, but everything's full of flavor. I usually get the mixed fajitas and a large margarita. They're always consistently delicious. I only wish they offered fresh jalapenos.

Mind you... My craving was for Saw's (next door) and they shut me out (see Saw's review). Therefore I made the executive decision to try their mexican food neighbor. Being accustom to the mexican heritage I figured I know a little about the food. I ordered Taco's de carne asada and was unimpressed. There was very little taste to the meat and based on the way they serve the tacos... I believe they feel confident that is what will keep people ordering carne asada. I needed more salsa and "fixins" to enjoy the 4 soft carne asada tacos. The beer was good! In their defence... I was a little ticked off from the experience just moments prior. Take it for what it's worth. O

I love nachos. As nacho lovers know, finding nachos that still taste good after being taken home and reheated is a hard thing to find. The La Bamba Nachos however are those rare nachos. Huge portion so leftovers are bound to happen but you'll want to eat these leftovers.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
