After visiting Birmingham for a month, working here on loan from Jacksonville FL, someone finally mentioned this superb spot to me. I have not visited the companion bakery & bistro (Continental Bakery & Chez Lulu) in English Village but now intend to! I rarely try baked goods anymore as I get older so they must look gorgeous & rich in order to tempt me. The display cases at Continental Bakery are as mouth-watering as such cases get! I opted first for the simplest item - a plain butter croissant. Having been disappointed in 'artisanal, traditional' expensive croissants at various highly-praised bakeries in Boston, Minneapolis and Chicago over the past 20 years, I was delighted (and a little bit surprised) to find that the best croissant I've tasted since the 1990's is in Birmingham AL. Throughout the day today I will try the other items I picked up: the prosciutto croissant, plain donut, French donut, poppyseed bagel, and plain biscuit. I already know I will not be disappointed. Kudo to those who make such outstanding treats possible, and thank you!

Fantastic atmosphere and staff. Coffee - They really do have a tasty house brew. Pastries - Their pastries are all wonderful but this day we tried the The Belgian Chocolate Salted Cookie. Ypu definitely need to stop by for this must have great. The Food - Didn't try the food but the staff explained a dish that left me wanting to come back for nice sunday brunch.

Expected a little more based on all the reviews, the blackberry pie was great, the blueberry pie, really dry. The decor was very cute. Looks comfortable enough to stop in and use the wifi or study.

I feel like Mix was just coming into its own in the downtown food scene, and it had a couple strong offerings for lunch. With that in mind, I was disappointed to hear that Mix had closed - but then just as quickly I took heart because I discovered that Continental Bakery quickly reopened the same space as a slightly redesigned bakery/cafe with even better baked goods and some of the same solid lunch items. Definitely make the new shop a visit and get a Power Salad (grilled salmon, soft-boiled egg, fresh greens, avocado, and other tasty goodies). Then, as you're eating your healthy and delicious lunch, you can drool over the caseful of pies, cakes, cookies, pastries, and breads that are calling out to be taken home with you. Just try resisting that piece of pie - I dare you.

Awful experience. We came here to pick up some food for a Sunday picnic. Couldn't call in our order because their menu online was completely wrong, which was fine. We didn't mind waiting. It took the cashier at least 10 minutes to ring in our order, as she didn't know how to work the register. She then had to reswipe our credit card three different times. We sat down to wait for our food. Pretty quickly, someone out of the kitchen came shouting, "Who had a BLT to go?" We said that we did. She asked if we had anything else, and we told her we had a Power Salad. She said the BLT wasn't ours. A couple minutes later she came back and said, "this must be yours since it's nobody else's" and just put the box down. Came back a few minutes later with my salad and put that box down too. We asked for and bag, and and few minutes later she brought that. When we got to the car, we realized that we weren't given any silverware. My husband went in to get some, and it took every person working in the restaurant to look for some. Finally, the chef had to go upstairs and get some out of storage, which she took to the kitchen to roll. When we finally sat down to eat, the power salad was... greasy? That's the best way to describe it. And the salmon, which was advertised as smoked, was (I'm fairly certain) just cold leftovers from what was cooked yesterday. This place has REALLY gone downhill since it was Mix. We won't be going back.

Fantastic bakery and lunch spot! Nothing like it in Birmingham or anywhere else for that matter. Beautiful restaurant and owner as well!;)

Continental Bakery 1819 5th Ave North Formerly Mix, the new Continental Bakery location in downtown Birmingham Alabama is a delightful place for lunch. As I work nearby, I would visit the restaurant / bakery every now and then for their pizza and sandwiches made with fresh bread, they were tasty which a healthy side. Now, with a total makeover to the interior and addition of some live lunchtime music it has become an instant success in the heart of the downtown business district. In all my trips to former Mix I never saw so many people lined up for lunch. The menu is very similar with my favorites being the Parma ham with cheddar on cranberry sourdough and the smoked salmon with fried green tomatoes. In spite of a glitch with their point of sale equipment our experience was great. The staff was friendly and courteous. The POS issue was resolved quickly by using a cash register on the bar. Overall I'll be stepping up my visits to Continental to enjoy some fine outdoor dining. Urban Cowgill

I really love this bakery. I just got back from Paris and was CRAVING the baguettes and croissants from there. CB definitely hits the spot. The baguettes are crispy and croissants are filling and flaky. This is probably the best bakery in Birmingham. My only complaint is this location is only a block or two from a shady downtown spot, and they're pretty much sold out of a lot of things by the evening. That's understandable but it's tough when you can only go after work and we're craving a chocolate croissant all day only to see them sold out :(

This place is great. A different and more European vibe than pretty much anywhere I have been in Birmingham. I had the smoked salmon salad and it was amazing, my wife had the chicken salad sandwich and loved it as well. If you are close to downtown and want something fresh and a great atmosphere I highly recommend checking it out!

I have had several terrible experiences here in the last couple months! This used to be my favorite spot in Northside, but lately the entire atmosphere has taken a change for the worst. The food quality used to be consistently good, the employees were very friendly with a positive energy. Now they seem miserable and overworked. I keep coming back in hopes that things will have improved because this location is so convenient to my office, but I'm afraid I will have to find somewhere else to eat lunch. Very disappointed.

Coffee had good flavor. No burnt taste. My only suggestion is for them to warm the cup so the coffee would remain warm longer. Service was terrible. I do not think the lady wanted to be there. Had to ask for my pastry a couples times. I guess she was too busy cleaning the machine after my drink. There was not another person waiting. I ordered a slice of apple pie. When she unwrapped it, it looked yellow and pink (like raw meat). I mentioned that the pie looked odd and asked how long has it been sitting there. She said over a week and it looks that way because it was sweating! Not quite the response I was looking to hear and said I'll skip it. With attitude to moved it to the other counter. The atmosphere of the place was nicely decorated with French artwork and furniture. This place has potential to be a nice coffee lounge. I'll try the original Continental to see if it is like downtown.

Great ham and cheese croissants, very flakey. Great place to have lunch/brunch in a relaxing atmosphere.

Good lunch in a really French Kitsch kind of place. The baked goods are delish. We had a "tarte" that was basically a quiche. It was served cold in the middle but once they got it warmed it was delicious. The nicoise was canned tuna but it was good canned tuna...no haricot verte or potatoes but overall it was reorderable salad. We arrived around 11:30 and by 12:30 they were wanting our seat. They have all kinds of fancy drinks and really cool pastry towers for afternoon tea. It was a great place to break the trip between ATL and MEM.

We've gone back several times. It's still good. The tarragon chicken salad on foccacia remains one of the best in town, heavy on the chicken. The roast beet salad was a disappointment. Admittedly, it's a good green salad, but very light on the goat cheese, and on the beets. I give up on that dish, it's simply not worth the price. On a personal note, and this is admittedly a pet peeve of mine, but if one is trying to give the impression of class and high standards, why give your patrons a damn stick, instead of a spoon, to stir coffee with? This lowers an otherwise fairly quality place in terms of decor, friendliness and helpfulness of staff, to the level of a fast food joint in this respect. C'mon Carole, you're better than that.

I'm a devotee to Continental Bakery in English Village so the moment I heard they were opening a downtown location, I was giddy with excitement. I don't mind the over-the-mountain trek but being able to hop on my bike for their delicious fare is an unexpected, albeit welcome, luxury. I've been here twice for Sunday brunch in the past two weeks and both experiences were, unsurprisingly, superb. I highly recommend the 'breads and spreads' basket for groups as each time I've had it the contents have varied but the quality/deliciousness-level has been consistent: amazing breads, biscuits, pop-overs + utterly divine jams, butters and preserves. The atmosphere is charming, the patio spacious, and the piano a unique touch. The staff here is gracious, attentive and ever-so-kind. I've never seen anyone with less than a content smile and they project such a serene vibe that you can't help but relax in their presence. Overall, a superb addition to downtown and a new favorite for me.
