We came for the Do-Dah-Day Eve party. We ordered the nacho, and it was the first time in my life I have seen Nacho Chips that were cooked too long and burned. Yuck. The cheese was not melted and the chicken was the shredded type and looked like it came out of a can. Double Yuck. Also, the ladies bathroom smelled. I mean smelled like a backup sewer-overpowering smell. It was terrible and gross. Honestly. Standing by the table to buy a Do-Dah-Day event, my shoes were sticking to the dirty floor. Gross. Will never-ever come back.

Went for brunch. Everyone seemed to like what they ordered in our group, each got something different (eggs, grits, french toast, chicken and pancakes, and the shrimp and grits). The bloody Mary and mimosas were great, had excellent service.

Terrible service, should have been a quick dinner with basic bar food instead turned into a long 2 hour ordeal with a slow waiter who was also terrible

Staff is rude, food is bad, drinks are poorly made, decor is tacky. This place has nothing to offer. It could be a decent run of the mill crap bar, but the staff really runs it into the ground - bunch of schmucks who can't find real jobs and act like they're part of an exclusive club and every patron should be honored to be served by them. The bouncers may just be the worst I've ever seen, treating the place like their personal bar. You're service industry, nothing more. Get over yourself. Management needs to do a better job hiring. I've never had such poor service.

Enjoy the Greek egg roll. Also great place to go for happy hour and football 50 cent wings and 1.00 of bottle of Coors light count me in .

Been here a few times and never had anything bad, The food is pretty good for bar-fare, and they do have a great bar with well-hell, which is really the main attraction. The comic-book, evil pulp vibe is pretty funky as far as places go around town, which makes them stand out.

Met up after work for a beer and some food. very interesting place, it has live music and an impressive bar. would like to come back for some music, but not tonight, just a beer and food. menu and ambiance are very eclectic, not your norm to say the least. Started off with a beer from their large selection of craft beers. They specialize in burgers so i did not deviat from the norm and got a bacon overload burger. cooked to my liking and the meat was very tasty, the sweet potato fries were the perfect compliment. nice place

Black Market Bar is special gem in the city. It's a bit quirky, divey, and feels like home to me. The decor is a mixture of comic book nerd, grungy rock & roll, and the creation of someone's interior design sense that has ADD. There's always a cool view of something or someone. The staff is nice, drink and beer selection are cheap and good, the food is actually pretty good despite my initial questions about sanitary standards in the kitchen, and the crowd is always interesting. The servers are good at suggesting new drinks or beers and will even bring samples to you if your unsure of what to try. There are also plenty of options on the menu for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I love the Black Market veggie burger with sweet potato fries! If you haven't been to BMB, stop by for a drink and meal because you will enjoy yourself. The interesting and sometimes comedic people watching opportunity on crowded nights is also a plus ;)

Worst service for lunch I have ever experienced. Went on a Saturday and was totally ignored for over 15 minutes while waitstaff talked at the rear end of the bar. We finally got our own menus but still no service. Got up and left. Had a friend tell me he had the same experience at the 280 location.

While not our typical "scene" we love this place!! The food is impressive and will keep you coming back! The atmosphere at first is a bit off putting as is is very dark and has an "alternative" flare. Once you loosen up though, it is nice! The staff is mostly friendly and the game room and patio are really fun and chill.

Worst excuse for a restaurant in the Birmingham area. Food is barely palatable. Service is slow and rude. Place is filthy. Avoid at all costs.

Fast & friendly service on a Tuesday early evening. Cold draft beer, but sticky bar top. Excellent lightning. All the TV's were on CTN lol. Overall a hardcore bar experience, will for sure be back

Went for a Tuesday evening because of their specials - $1 beers and $6 burgers. Very disappointed in the beer special - coors light was the only option which is unbelievable. Luckily they still had a fairly decent list of other craft beers available. Now the burgers on the other hand are just plain awesome. My friend got the bbq burger which was absolutely huge. She just loved it. She said it was well seasoned and she liked the combo of the bacon (not skimpy with the bacon), Monterey cheese and the crispy onion ring. The strange thing was it had no bbq sauce. She asked for some on the side and was then charged for it which is a bit ridiculous considered it's called the essential bbq burger!! But anyway lol I ordered the feta burger but subbed a grilled chicken patty. The grilled chicken was also huge and so juicy inside. I loved the bruschetta tasting mixture of spices, tomatoes, olives, and red onions on the sandwich. Incredibly tasty. We both got sweet potato fries on the side. They were plentiful and crispy. I Like the addition of brown sugar on top. Yum!! Service was good. Also had bingo going on which was something different to do.

After a long day in the sun at Sloss Fest we decided to take a break from the heat and made our way to Birmingham's Five Points. A local recommended the Black Market and it was so tasty. We had the burger and tacos such a good treat after dancing the day away.

Great place to hang out with friends. Nice patio area and cool decor. Beer selection is good with local breweries. I've never had the food but hear it's goid.

Love, love, love. Black Market burger is my favorite, chicken salad dip is too legit, atmosphere is awesome, beer selection makes me feel at home, and the prices are grand. I would definitely recommend this as a late night/after work/weekend spot to drink and eat to your heart's content.

Bartenders are complete a$$holes. 2/3 times of going to black market I saw the bartenders abandon the bar to beat up customers. Fck this place.

Been here quite a bit and have discovered if you're bored on a Tuesday and low on cash, come here. $6 burgers, pretty tasty, $1 Coors Light, and free bingo. Yes, free. But you shouldn't come because that will lessen my chances of winning. Likewise, Wednesday after 9 they feature $1 Wells, and it's usually pretty packed. Other nightly specials I'm sure, so check them out sometime. Just not on Tuesday for bingo.

Cool spot, dive bar with good patio. Waiter definitely didn't want to be there. Was our first time and could have used some helpful suggestions other than, it's all pretty good. Empanadas were tasty with just enough spice but more like a large wonton. The Cajun pasta with chicken was very good and had a kick too. Not a good wine selection, but that's not surprising as it wasn't known for its wine selection. Good place to sit outside or at bar and watch football.

We went on a Tuesday night for the Burgers,Beer,Bingo a couple of friends of mine and it was fun! I got there @6 and had a table and waiter come like one sec. later aftre sitting down I didn't even have a chance to review the menu. The Beer special wasn't my fav not really a beer drinker but I was that night b/c it was a specia!! I got the bbq burger and it was awsome the guy that was doing bingo was very funny they have a great vibe we just laughed and drinked beer all night long

There is NO reason to visit this place for food. Not even pub worthy food. Sunday afternoon and pleasant day only to be overrun by the drunk customers' with crude remarks loudly shared with all patrons. Is this how a sidewalk / outside area is managed? I think thAt is the issue here - lack of management for the betterment of the business. If you are Owner in this place it would be well worth your time to visit and see the craziness first hand. Don't bother to visit just a waste of time for patrons.

While I lo be hanging out here, I am very dismayed with the way they did their Burlesque show and will never be back for a show. Those of us who came early, bought dinner, drinks, etc so we could have a good seat we completely blocked out from the show When people came and stood in front of.us . It was ridiculous. Crowd needs to be managed better. Basically, those of us who spent money to get good seats were screwed. Very very disappointed....will only come back if no show is going on

Service is very slow. I waited 25 minutes for a beer on Friday during happy hour, and they weren't even busy. Also, on their website they advertise half-price queso during happy hour, but they haven't honored that special since they moved to the new location.

Sat for 20 minutes and was ignored by wait staff. Couldn't even find someone to tell we hadn't been seen. Many Yelpers have said the same. Won't ever be back.

Four of us went for dinner last night (Tuesday night). We didn't sit at the bar, so I can't speak for the bartenders, but our service was EXCELLENT (kudos to Ricky for making us laugh every time he came to our table) at our table. When we got there around 6:15, the hostess greeted us as soon as we walked in the door, and we were seated a table immediately. The food was great as well. The atmosphere topped off a great experience for me. It's super laid back (there's a Chucky doll on the wall behind the bar), the music playing is awesome (but not too loud), there is a mix of all kinds of people from all different backgrounds there...it was just a great experience. Food recommendations: Phil's Fingers (best I've eaten in Birmingham so far) and definitely the Pork Empanadas. The Onion Rings on The Bad Exampler were super good as well. Hell, just order anything, because it's going to be great. We all got something different, and everyone was extremely happy with what they ordered. Black Market just gained a loyal customer for sure.

Awesome decor. Great brunch on the weekends.... The burgers are amazing!! Drinks are reasonablly priced with friendly staff. Try the Greek egg rolls.... yum.... great place to come and chill with friends... drink and eat.

First off, the atmosphere at Black Market is really eclectic...so much to look at. I love that the old tin ceilings and moldings are still in place too. The crowd is always really diverse, and the staff always friendly and prompt. I have never had anything here that I did not like! I would highly recommend the Greek egg rolls...have never had such a delicious egg roll anywhere else!! The burgers are also quite good as well. Pretty good drink prices too, especially if you come during happy hour!! One of our favorite places for brunch, with $2 "build your own" mimosas...or $10 pitchers!

  • Katie M.

Definitely a dive bar, but their pork empanadas were really good (if a bit messy, I'd ask for the sauce on the side) and the three of them were quite enough to make a filling dinner for me. But very, VERY divey, and I really like hole-in-the-wall type places. The air conditioner was broken, hope they get that fixed. We went specifically because there was a burlesque show there, not sure if I'd go again without a main event.

BM always seems to be a happening spot, especially after the St Patty's parade in 5pts. We heard 3 or 4 different bands within a couple hours...big band, NOLA jazz, bagpipers. They had specials for whiskey and common drinks, like car bombs and Tullamore Dew. I had some Tullamore, but it's just not as good as my go-tos: Wild Turkey 101 and Macallan 12yr. Used to come here only on Wed nights for $1 wells...not sure if they still do that. Food is better than normal pub fare as well...any place with sweet potato fries is a friend o' mine!

They have great food & drinks, but are sooo rude!! ....just like the other store I Birmingham .,. Whatever . I still love the food. People are asshole; like the shirts say" BARTENDERS ARE EVIL" for sure!!!

This place holds a special place in my heart. It used to be Dugan's years ago., I was the doorman here for a couple of years. Waited tables at Dugans a couple of years and grew up only about a mile away. I have to say that BlackMarket carries on the tradition of having a Uber Cool atmosphere mixed with a delicious menu. We were attending a Christmas Play downtown and stopped in. My son had Phils FIngers - excellent chix fingers - I had the Dugan's Ruben (of course) and my wife had some kinda ultra burger that she ate every bite of without complaint. Waiter was very personable - I only had one problem and that was a male "couple" at the bar drinking and cussing. The door says no kids after 9 so I assumed 6 pm was good. My son pointed out the foul mouthed couple himself a couple of times. Maybe they can keep an eye out a little better for this type of things when they have customers that it could offend. - Otherwise it was an excellent experience. We will be back and highly recommended.

While the food here is good but not outstanding, this is a funky, relaxed and atmospheric (bohemian) bar near the University of Alabama downtown. I had burgers and sweet potato fries, which were a good value for $10 burgers (one must pay more for the best burger in Birmingham at Dram in Mountain Brook) Black Market has a very good draft beer selection, including a few from Trim Tab Brewery, one of the lesser known local craft breweries. IMHO the Trim Tab Pillar to Post Rye Brown Ale is one of the best beers in America, so I was delighted to find it at Black Market.

The location of Black Market Bar holds a lot of memories for me-- I still miss the Hippodrum and Dugans. But, it seems that Black Market will be the perfect place to make new ones. The bar is spacious and has plenty of places to sit. The bartenders are awesome and attentive and the prices are fair. They have a great selection of beer and liquor and their signature drinks. They also have food, which I haven't had it this location, but if it is anything like their 280 location then it will be fantastic. And, for the best thing about Black Market--Well Hell. $1 well drinks on Wednesdays. Its just too good to pass up. Its packed, but there is much more room at the 5 points location. I really wish I still lived in Birmingham so I could drop by here more often.

I like this place. I've had a limited selection of the fare, but drinks are good, reasonably priced and the atmosphere is fun. The people in here range from professional to grungy but it's a great mix, and trivia on Thursday nights is a blast. Surprisingly attentive service for drunken trivia - I was impressed. Our waiter was dedicated to refilling the drinks no matter how ridiculous the place got as the night went on.

We were travelling from Virginia to Texas and this was a nice place near our hotel. The appetizer sampler is a must! The waiter was cool, very attentive and polite. Our entrees were great also, no complaints. We were here on a Saturday night around Christmas so it was pretty quiet for a bar...

Went for dinner on a Monday night. This place certainly has an interesting atmosphere as it's obviously a bar that has live music more often than not. However, there was no music on this night. We were promptly seated and informed it was Happy Hour for another few minutes before other drink specials began at 7. I appreciated the heads up from our server, who was very good throughout the meal by the way. The menu is extensive with a number of salads, pastas, burgers, sandwiches, and other dishes. The appetizer selection sure was appetizing, pardon the pun, but we passed on this occasion. I got the Black Market burger, which was delicious and served with steak fries. My wife got some chicken tacos that were also very good. All in all this was a good experience and we will certainly be back. Highly recommend.

Stop by here often when Im in Birmingham. Great beer selection and good food. The trash can burgers are hit or miss not in the burger itself which is always cooked perfect but since the cook gets to choose whats on it your at there mercy. Some days its really great and unique, other days it can be plane. Thats the gamble you take but usually its worth the risk. Everything else I have had has been good as well and service has been good considering Im usually at the bar. They used to have some TVs with old gaming consoles on them but I think they got rid of them. Definatly recommend.

This is really a cool lil' joint. Love having options in Five Points. The night my boyfriend and I went we really had no expectations & just wanted something out of the normal restaurant. We walked in during the trivia hour and it was quite a lively atmosphere. It was jammed packed when we got there and it stayed that way even two hours later when we left. I can appreciate the late hours & I like knowing I can find decent food late (if I'm ever out REALLY late). Anyway, the menu is a basic bar menu but with a few extras thrown in. I got the chicken nachos. They were tasty & had lots of good toppings but...I needed more cheese. It's not the melty velveeta/nacho cheese-cheese. Instead they sprinkled shredded cheese and melted it just a tad. Well of course shredded cheese doesn't always cover all of the chips, there wasn't a lot of it and it can be kinda dry. Anyway, next time I think I will ask if they have the nacho cheese-cheese. My margarita was just ok...I suppose in a basic, really busy bar, beer, shots or something straight on the rocks might be your best option. All in all we had a good time listening to music in between trivia rounds and just trying to blend in with the young folks. That night it was a younger crowd (mid to late 20's). I wouldn't mind trying it for lunch one day. Either way, I'll go back.

I'm very excited about the opening of the 2nd Black Market location in the Southside neighborhood! While I'm sad to see Speakeasy close downtown, this is a great addition to the scene in Southside and I may find myself here a lot more often. I went in Monday night after a work meeting and was met with the great open space that this building offers - that I had enjoyed back in the days of Dugan's (yes, I realize that dates me). I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the decent sized crowd out to enjoy food & drinks. I'm not sure yet how I would categorize the patrons other than it was a good mix in age and style. The beer selection was good, although they were out of a few too many for comfort, but I chalk that up to the growing pains of literally opening a couple of days before. I'll be back to check out the menu and let you know! Based on the great reviews for their 280 location and the track record of the owners/management I have high expectations for this location! Be sure to check it out next time you are in the neighborhood.

We stop here for a bite to eat before the St. Patrick's Day parade. We were very happy with the atmosphere. However, food and service not so much. My husband ordered chicken fingers for us to share and a bacon burger. I had ordered a Ruben sandwich. When the food came the waitress just brought the chicken fingers and burger. She seemed confused when we asked about the Ruben , not remembering or realizing that we also ordered the sandwich. With no apology she said it would be right out. My husband said his burger was good they could have been more generous with the fries. I didn't care for the chicken fingers they were very thin and with what meat was on there was dry. It did take sometime and when the Ruben arrived it had 2 thin slices if corned beef hardly any sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. I should of sent it back!! Instead it just asked for more thousand island sauce that we were charged for. We will not be returning. I understand that she may have misunderstood us that we were ordering three meals for two people, but it was not handled well. No apology what so ever!!

This place is like a jock's rock & roll B-movie. And God bless it, that's a good thing. Watch the game on multiple big screens. Scope out the quirky decor. Such a good place just to chill with friends on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. I always liked Speakeasy, and this is even better (food!). Plus, it's always a good sign for an owner to be visibly involved with their business, and every time I've been in, George has been around to mingle with customers and keep a watchful eye on things. My only complaint is the one that I'm sure everyone has about Five Points... parking can be a drag.
