I don't love buffets but I seem to have a soft spot for Chinese buffets which are well run and offer a lot of selection for under $10 with a drink (lunch). So yes, about 3x year I go by New China in Festival Village. So I read Byron's review and was out near Lakeshore so I stopped by this place yesterday to give it a try. Ehh, I don't really know what to say. These people are trying and the place is brand new so I will give it the benefit of the doubt. They only have about 15 offerings not counting the pizza, wings, etc. American food. I did not see any crab legs, hot or cold, nor S&P softshell (which is fine as I can't really stomach those) or oysters. Perhaps those are weekends or dinner only? What did I try? The hot & sour soup with a few wontons thrown in was good/fine. The sushi was actually decent and I saw a .000003 gram ounce piece of tuna in the spicy tuna roll which was already prepared. The pepper beef was actually good. The "spicy" chicken was fried chicken coated in a sauce with jalapenos. I was in sort of a rush so did not have time for the hibachi. I would probably give it a try if I'm in the area and yes I guess the price point is fine. However, I would rather spend about twice as much per person and go to Red Pearl, Great Wall, or Red Bowl and a better experience and food. Additionally, the thumping hip hop did little to whet my appetite. I was annoyed they could not process my Amex regardless of assurances they took Amex The code given was an error on their side and not a problem with my card or balance.

Summary: Atmosphere: 5 Food: 5 Service: 5 Value: 4.5 First off, let me just say I'm an avid buffet lover =). If you check my reviews, you'll notice I've eaten at all the biggest Asian buffets in the Birmingham area. !! This is the BEST buffet in the Birmingham area !! A-Star Buffet is new, clean, has amazing service, and the highest food quality for a BUFFET THE CRAB LEGS HERE PARALLEL THOSE AT THE BEST BUFFETS IN LAS VEGAS! (I'm talking about M-Casino) This is also the only buffet in the area to serve salt and peppered soft shell crab on a regular basis. "Less is more," is how I could describe the chefs that make the food here. I used to eat at Wang's once to twice a week. Ever since I discovered A-Star buffet I have not returned to Wang's and I eat at this buffet literally once a week. I also have not been back to New China Town Buffet since discovering A-Star, which was my original favorite in Alabama.* (Edit- 4/25/2015): In response to Keith N, I'm a poor PhD student, and have no stake in this restaurant. I'am however an avid and experienced buffet eater as I love good value for my food as you can see in my all of my previous reviews. ________________________________ Food: Chinese food lovers rejoice, as most of the options at this buffet you cannot go wrong with! I avoid many dishes at other chinese food buffets that I gladly eat here. My favorite dishes: 1. The marinated chicken (teriyaki)- probably my favorite Asian marinated chicken ever; extremely moist and flavorful with some type of teriyaki/bourbon/soy sauce. I don't even like chicken! (seriously) 2. Crab legs: the absolute best crab legs at a buffet I have had so far in the Birmingham area (about 4 different buffets). I love the cold crab-legs here as opposed to the warm crab legs swimming in butter-water sauce at about every other asian buffet. I can actually taste the flavor of the crab. These remind me of the crab legs I get ritually at M-Casino buffet in Las Vegas! (The fiance and I were going to take a picture of their seafood layout. However, we ate all the crab legs and oysters, so by the time we were ready to take the picture, there wasn't much too look at.... The layout looked beautiful, as the seafood is laid on ice with some type of lettuce vegetable (I don't eat/know vegetables 0_o). 3. Soft shell crab!! NO OTHER BUFFET in the area HAS SALT and PEPPERED SOFT SHELL CRAB!! I missed this dish. 3. Clams: unlike most Asian buffets that drench the clams and black bean sauce. This buffet has a much a milder sauce that lets the flavor of the clam standout. 4. Sushi: hands down is the best sushi I've had at a Asian buffet in Alabama. Not only do they have sushi that is usually fresher than most buffets, they also have various commodities that you can add to your sushi. For example, they have eel sauce, ponzu sauce, and spicy mayo, which you can add to your plate at your liking. This being said, the type of sushi that is put out there is not always the same. So to get the best stuff, you must either go at dinner time or be lucky. 5. Oysters: although the oysters here are obviously not San Francisco Bay quality fresh, they are probably the best you're going to get at a buffet around this area. 6.Hibachi: this is my absolute favorite hibachi in Alabama. The sauce they put on when cooking your hibachi is not too oily yet flavorful enough for you to keep wanting more. On some days I could taste the cooking wine they used that soaked into the pineapple in my dish, which was OH SO succulent! When I used to go to mongolian bbq restaurants back in Cali, I always load up the cooking wine for my pineapples. They also have shrimp you can add. Another detail I like is that the noodles are slightly firm compared to most other buffets, which means that they don't become as soggy after they are cooked. Service: Every time I come here, I'm shocked by the amazingly comforting and attentive service that the hostess and waiters provide. They truly make an effort to ensure your happiness. For example the person who cooked my hibachi even brought it to my table when he was finished cooking it. It's not often that you will get this amazing service at Asian restaurants. The service alone has me and the fiance coming back. Value: The only reason I rated this a 4, is because drinks are automatically included in the purchase. If sodas were added as an option, there would be no issue. Summary: Overall this buffet has great quality food, extremely amazing service, and deserves much more attention than it currently receives. Since I've been so busy with work recently, I have been really backed up on the yelp reviews that I desire to write. Now I truly only write yelp reviews when I believe restaurants that deserve help, need it. Once word spreads about this buffet, I believe this will be an extremely popular/happening buffet in the Birmingham area! Give it a try!

The name of this restaurant represents exactly the amount of stars this restaurant deserves: "A" Star. The entire experience was weird. There wasn't a big selection of sushi, but one of the workers told me they would make whatever kind of roll I want. I asked for a spicy tuna roll (a relatively popular style of roll at sushi places). What I received was seaweed wrapped around a disproportionate amount of rice, a little bit of tuna, and a GIANT glob of wasabi. It was completely inedible. It was like something that one of those youtube celebrities famous for eating crazy things would attempt, but fail miserably when the ungodly amount of wasabi starts eating a hole in their stomach lining. Judging from Byron I's review, it seems he may have a 'dog in the fight' as they say. It doesn't count if you review your own restaurant, my friend. Just promise me you won't edit your post again saying that "I don't know dikkkk" The service, however, was excellent. It pains me to write such a negative review when the staff was so prompt with our drink refills. We were greeted warmly at the front door. They al seemed very eager to please their customers. It's not their fault their sushi guy has likely never seen a sushi roll before. It's just not your wheelhouse, my friend. The price of this buffet is just way too high to justify the horrible food quality. If you are in this part of town, just coast on by "A-Star Buffet" and swing right on into the parking lot under the biggest cactus in town. Walk into Taco Casa, get yourself a few snack burritos or a chimalupa, and pat yourself on the back and rub your happy tummy for making the best food decision you will make all week.

i'm upgrading to 2 stars... 1 star may have been bit harsh. Yes it does have Hibachi, sushi, shrimp, oyster...but psychologically, the initial price of $12.99 + tax + tip hits pretty hard. I'm in there thinking, this is expensive for a chinese buffet... I sincerely hope they do not go out of business but I also hope that they make some adjustments so it is more welcoming(which the owner seems to be doing at the moment)

Excellent place for lunch with a wide variety of food. Look out Mr. Wangs. There was a nice selection of food other than oriental so everyone would have something they would enjoy. Try A Star.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
