This café is a gem. I went here with family friends for breakfast this past weekend. It reminded me of a mom and pop shop back home in Maryland. The interior isn't the fanciest, but what it lacks in décor, it definitely makes up for in the tastiness of their food. I ordered the western omelet with no onions, hashbrowns, and toast. It was sooooo good! I can't rave enough about it! It was just the hearty breakfast I needed to go back out into the cold. :-)

It's a dive, but it's a dive with a pretty good breakfast. You won't get service with a smile, but they will bring you a good breakfast. Fair priced for Nome, food was good, veggies surprisingly fresh, and some of the worst coffee this side of the Arctic Circle....no fresh cream or anything other than powder creamer was about my only disappointment.

I come here for breakfast every time I'm in Nome. There's nothing great about the food, price, or service but it is one of the few games in town. All good!

you know, there aren't a lot of choices in Nome, and the Polar Cafe is a bit...rustic..in the interior, putting it nicely. that said, my gf and i embraced the greasy spoon feel and went for an omelet & home fries, and a grilled cheese & french fries. both were pretty tasty, especially my home fries which were expertly cooked with crisp tops and properly firm vs soggy bottoms. yum. there were quite a few locals around eating and we got a feel for Nome while we were here. with the cost of importing ingredients to Nome the prices here will make you think you're back in Manhattan, but that's not this place's fault.

Best Friday lunch special in town with their steak and clam chowder. I love their halibut sandwiches, house omlettes, biscuits with gravy, and nachos supreme.

This restaurant is surprisingly good. It is relatively clean (by Nome standards) and has friendly service. However, expect to spend a large amount of time waiting for your food and dining. Good old-fashioned diner food and breakfasts. About the same price as most places in Nome (expensive for the rest of the USA). Nice view of the Bering Sea. Family-friendly and very casual.

This is a decent place to eat when you are in Nome. It has a nice, right-on-the-water view, with waves splashing up on the huge rocks, right below the window. Sure, the place is dirty and dingy from the wind blowing dirt and mud everywhere, but most places in bush Alaska are like this. The table was clean, the dishes were clean and the waitress was not overly friendly but very attentive and prompt. The food was good and not crazy expensive for bush Alaska. I had fish and chips for $15 and with it came 4 pieces of deep fried cod, french fries, garlic toast, veg-all (yuck) and ...the salad bar! It's rare to see a salad bar in the bush. This one had really fresh lettuce, tomatoes and carrots along with homemade macaroni and potato salad. The bathroom was clean (they make you take a key to get in). The restaurant is tucked in behind and separated from the Polar Bar.

you don't have a lot of choices this close to the arctic circle. this is an authentic place, so enjoy it. enjoy the unique walrus ivory carvings and the personalities trickling through the door. there is no McDonalds in Nome, so don't expect this food to be cheap either. Geordie had it right, clean and basic.
