Very overpriced. Not sure what the hype if over this place. We had 6 people. My meal arrived after everyone was done eating. My platter was greasy and overcooked. Maybe their sushi is good but the items on the menu .... MEH. My friend had a salmon miso and that tasted good. But generally, it was ok. ... nothing to write home about BUT yelping about it :-)

Excellent sushi with a great view, if you can snag a table with a window seat or go out on the deck. We saw sea lions swim by when we had lunch here the other day. I got the sushi/sashimi lunch box special and polished the whole thing off because the fish was so fresh and tasty. I've eaten here several times and it has been excellent every time.

Great sashimi and udon prepared by Japanese chefs, this unassuming restaurants has some of the best seafood I have ever had. Only weak spot is the dessert selection.

The food is tasty, priced fairly for Kodiak, but they are short on staff. I visited the Powerhouse twice and twice thought that our party of three shouldn't have needed to wait 10-15 minutes because 4 or so tables had not yet been bussed. Once past that the rest of the process goes pretty smooth. The Pacific Cod dish had great presentation and was cooked perfectly. The view of the waterway rewarded us with sea lions while the opposite bank was spotted with American and bald eagles. I've never been to a place with more eagles.

Great location and nice scenic views. Sushi was so-so, the salad was the best part and the dressing was really good. The staff and service was sub-par. We heard more than once this is the best place in town, but I think that is debatable.

Hands down this was the best restaurant in Kodiak, AK. If you are visiting Kodiak and are looking for a good dinner place to go to this is the one. I went there with my family when we were vacationing in Kodiak. I ordered a sashimi special which was phenomenal. The fish was very fresh and well cut. The variety that was offered for a "special" was very surprising. One of my daughters ordered a tempura Udon and the other a seafood Udon. Both of them were excellent. The tempura were not very oily, crispy and yummy. The broth was perfectly flavored. The seafood combination in the soup was once again surprising varied and cooked perfectly. My wife ordered a bento box with short ribs which were also cooked to perfection. We walked out of the restaurant pleasantly surprised and with a very full tummy :)

The food is good by Kodiak standards. The view is pretty awesome if you can get a seat by the windows. Sometimes you can even see sea lions, orcas, birds etc. My only issue with the place is that there is only one server who is any good. Drinks are hardly refilled unless you have the awesome male server. If your in Kodiak, come to Powerhouse but bring low expectations on service and you will enjoy it.

Sashimi was great. Service was slow, but friendly. Wouldn't rush back, but it is worth a shot if you're in the mood for sushi.

Booth by the water is awesome! You can sometimes see sea lions or even an orca swimming by (they have pictures on the wall). They are very busy around dinner time, so make a reservation. All the food is great. I've eaten here a dozen times. I recommend the miso soup, the Coastie Roll, the Arizona Roll and the crab leg plate. This plate of crab legs is 200$, but it is a mountain of crab. It's good for two or three people. Soooo good! They clean and crack the crab legs for you, so you just dip in butter and eat a whole pound of the sweetest crab legs you could ever imagine. Once you've eaten here, all that left for you to try is Noodles for Thai, Henry's for fish and chips and the Taco Cart. Stick to the sushi here. A few times friends have ordered the baked fish etc. and they've been disappointed.... Unless you go for the crab, of course!

As others have said there is a wait... and again, as others have said it is worth it. The best seaweed salad I've ever had. The miso butter salmon was out of this world. The veggies were cooked perfectly although I would have liked a little more. The glaze and sauce were so good I at all my rice with it and I'm not big on rice. Beautiful interior and view of the water. The staff were all very friendly. Highly recommended. I will most likely eat there again this week because there were so many great looking dishes to try.

Review: Everything was fresh. The food here really captured the realness of Kodiak Alaska. The eel was ill (dope,) the sashimi was gnarly, the tempura soba was rad. If you sit near the windows, you might spot sea otters or sea lions.

You wouldn't know from the name, but this place has wonderful sushi and seafood. I'm visiting Kodiak for a job interview, and one of the first things I had to check out was the sushi. Luckily, I had a night off from interviews to go to the Old Powerhouse, right on an inlet from the bay, overlooking Near Island. There were people waiting to get in when they opened at 5 pm, and a bunch of takeout containers already assembled in the kitchen. Food prices were slightly higher than on the mainland, which I expected, but the sushi was super fresh, even in February and in the middle of a commercial fishing strike. I sat at the sushi bar, where two chefs were busily preparing a few orders for the dining room, and "so many to go," he said in an exasperated tone. This will be a regular place for me if I end up working here!

Best sushi I've ever had! This place is amazing, somehow they even make a california roll amazing! Favorite rolls: any with fresh salmon (as it is really fresh here) and i really like the "no name roll", Ton of fresh fish and ingredients, you know it's good when a handful of fishermen show up to drop off fresh off the dock coolers of fish while your sitting at the sushi bar. Service sometimes sucks when you are at a table, but is amazing at the bar, but the food more than makes up for any slight shortcomings in the waitresses. Also the "Alaskan salmon" (in miso butter) on the entree menu, was AMAZING!!! te first bite i took wis likely the best bite of food i have ever put in my mouth, perhaps it is just the 4 months without other restaurants talking but man it was good. Try the Tempura, they put in a veriety of veggitables that you dont see at typical sushi places, and it changes with the seasons, some really uncommon veggies that are just awesome as tempura! This place sits right on the channel so the atmosphere can not be beat, i have litterally watched Killer Whales and Sea lions out the window as i have munched on sushi!

I went here for my birthday a few days ago and everything we had was delicious. I had the Alaskan Salmon (perfection), California roll, bacon wrapped scallops for appetizer woww good and my husband had the filet mignon for dinner. Everything was great and a nice portion (nothing oversized). The peanut butter put the icing on the night for me. I will def go back here to try more sushi and dinner. Our server Joey was a pleasure to have.

The Fisherman's roll was fantastic. We had 26 people there and it was kinda slow, there wine glasses are too small, but the food is worth it!!! The restaurant is right near the water, beautiful scenes.

Fresh sashimi with wonderful chef and staff. Thank you Chef Tom for a great time at the Sushi Bar !

The sushi is great. The service is very slow so be willing to wait around. If you go for lunch it's always a better experience. If you're pregnant try the asparagus roll, so good!

Of the restaurants in Kodiak, this is the best. Sushi was fresh and rolls were creative. The only complaint is around service. Our waitress was "in the weeds" the whole time we were there... Not sure if she was in experience or had too many tables.... View is spectacular.

Clean, cool old building with nice atmosphere. The staff was friendly, prompt, and efficient. The food was so far the best I've had in Kodiak. The sashimi was fresh and tasty, the sauces were great, the California roll good, seaweed salad very tasty. For a small island community this place is the bomb! And the lunch prices are reasonable. Give it a try!

Power House, not much competition for sushi in Kodiak, not much competition for other restaurants on the island, either! The place may be huge, including tables, booths and sushi bar seating, but still seems to find itself full on the weekends. Very Americanized sushi, except the sashimi, its difficult to find a sushi roll dish that DOESN'T have a mayo based sauce drizzled on it. Come on now, lets not try to fool the uncultured Coasties into thinking this is genuine sushi when its really generic! The upside to this restaurant is that there is a large menu selection, from hot dishes to cold, and even some American ones (french fries as a side dish....WHY????) Lots of rolls to mix and match, and creative selections created just for Kodiak. The downside? Many dishes arrive at different times if with a group larger than 2. The hot dish will probably come before the rolls, so one is finished with a meal while another is just getting started. Kind of an unattractive way to dine, especially with a date place such as this. I got my fill of powerhouse when I first arrive to the island, but later was turned away simply because of the customers who dined there as well, only place on the island I got dirty looks at, strange...

Ok, First time there! I never knew it existed and I am truly sad that I have never been there before! Sable Fish - must try! Sushi was tasty too. I had the fried Halibut and shrimp. Very fresh tasting and perfectly cooked. If you are ever in Kodiak, you have to go here!

When you're in Kodiak and you've fulfilled all your senses but taste, the Old Powerhouse Restaurant is an excellent place to taste Kodiak. Their sashimi bowl was a tasty compilation of what the archipelago's waters had to offer. Well not exactly, but the seafood was cold as it should be and tasted extremely fresh. When the weather is right, dining outside behind the restaurant is the way to go here. You get the most scenery and plenty of fresh air (and you'll find that it will do your health a lot of good). The wait was a little long but didn't bother me since I was preoccupied with the fresh air and scenery. Staff was courteous and prices were surprisingly reasonable. I enjoyed dining here and would revisit whenever I happen to be in the area.

The 'Powerhouse' as the locals call it is perhaps - the - place to turn for authentic sushi during your next stay in Kodiak. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous and the outdoor patio overlooking the downtown channel is not to be missed. During prime time you're going to be looking at a slight wait from the staff while they juggle many tables with little help - be patient with them and in return you're going to have a wonderful dining experience. Special note - the seaweed salad has always been perfect time and time again. Give it a chance and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Good spot for fresh sushi. Got the chef's special - a delectable bowl of sashimi. Local brews on tap as well. Atmosphere is a little off (bright lighting and not cozy), and the menu size is cheesecake factory-esque. Just go for the sushi.

Overrated. Slow service. Good sashimi. The funniest think about this restaurant is that the next day, when we were returning on our fishing charter, we sailed past the restaurant. One of the servers ran out onto the deck and yelled to us "welcome back!" She was warm, enthusiastic, and nothing like the greeting we got when we walked in the restaurant to eat. When we arrived to eat the night before, a server was standing near the host counter, looked at us, and, without saying a word, walked away. Presumably she went to get the hostess, who walked out with a mouth full of food, grabbed some menus, and began walking us to our table. We were halfway there before she had swallowed her food and greeted us. The table was a flimsy plastic banquet table, with no table cloth. The acoustics were a bit live. Certainly, the atmosphere was lacking. The sashimi was fresh and tasty. The salad was good. The tea was tasty, although served so hot it took 10 minutes to cool enough to sip. I expected a lot more, because so many of the locals advised us to try it. Many people told us it was one of the best places on the island to eat. Unfortunately, they were partly right. I would say its worth a try, but don't go in there with overly high expectations. With the prices on the menu, you'd expect a lot more, but take it for what it is.

Sushi rolls were big. Service a little slow but the restaurant was packed when I was there. Decor can really use a makeover. I really enjoyed the halibut rice dish. The fish was very fresh.

The worst salmon I've had. Very disappointed. Drenched in a disgusting sweet butter sauce. I'm a lifer Alaskan and was excited to visited Kodiak expecting great things from this place, nothing like I expected! With other good options give this place a miss. Our server was very sweet and did a good job. Will not return or recommend.

I've been going to this place for years, I'd have to say that everytime we have new personnel report to my unit and we head out to Alaska, I always ask 2 questions: 1) Have you ever had sushi? 2) Have you ever been to Alaska?. If you've said no to any of those, you were most likely coming with me and a group of "regulars" to the Power House for a dragon roll or a "Coastie" roll. I highly recommend the food from this place, as I told them, the only other place I that I can get fresh sushi from is Hawai'i. So it's a lil like a touch of home. NUFF SAID I'M OUTIE!!!!

The Powerhouse is a tastefully decorated, quiet oasis of dining in Kodiak. I have been here more times than I care to count, and have never walked away without a smile. Whenever I have guests in town, this is my first suggestion for a lovely dinner. My advice to newcomers would be to try something new here, and sit by the window. I highly recommend their lunch bento boxes, an excellent value and lunch is a good time for sea life viewing from your seat (eagles, sea lions, fishing boats, oh my!)! The seaweed salad and taco rolls are excellent and of course anything incorporating Alaskan seafood will be off-the-charts fresh.

(Note: this is my first review.) Let me start out by saying this place brings back memories. I worked here in the summer/fall of '05, as a dishwasher (my first job), my friend wanted me to do it since he was an assistant sushi chef and since the main dishwasher was gone for a while, I decided to give it a try. Lots of fun times. The Powerhouse to most Kodiakans is like a 4-star restaurant. The food is great, prices are not too bad, pretty much the sushi is the most expensive , and the service is pretty good. You will love the location, it set right on the channel. The view is stunning and they have an outdoor patio if you want to eat outside'. *Try to be patient at times, the waiters and chefs do their best to get to everyone. *Get there early on Friday and weekends since it gets pretty busy. *There is no lunch on Sunday, only dinner. They are closed on Mondays. *My former boss, (the owner/head sushi chef), Tom-san, also owns another restaurant in Louisana. I saw him in on the Food Network. He's a great guy! *And try the tropical taco. The food they have there is not just sushi. They have cooked seafood, meat, etc.

If this was Seattle they would not get 5 stars but this is as good as it gets here. The bentos are good and its not overpriced. Good luck getting a seat Friday or Saturday night.

This is a true restaurant in Kodiak, with great food and drink. The outdoor seating is one of the best places to be in Kodiak on a sunny day. The menu covers it all even japanese. The portions are very generous and well done.

Good sushi, stellar view. Be prepared for a long wait for your food (my sushi took an hour!).

Tom the sushi chef/owner is a very personable guy, take a second to talk to him and he will treat you like VIP. I used to go at least 2 times a week until I moved, I am now in LA and have yet to find a sushi place that feels as good as the Powerhouse. Kodiak is a small place but the Powerhouse gets crowded, but the atmosphere is good enough for any wait.

I've gotta say I must have been there on an off night or something. Either that or I was just spoiled by sushi restaurants such as Taka's and Mikuni's in Sacramento. For a sushi restaurant in the seafood capitol of the world I was expecting so much better. If I go in again, hopefully I'll have the 4 star experience everyone else seems to be having, until then I give it a 2 (Meh. I've experienced better) at best.

The Powerhouse is right on the water, which adds to the charm. The sushi is tasty. If you have a friend who doesn't like sushi, they also serve favorites like clam chowder.
