I used to live a few blocks away from East Los Angeles, and I always enjoyed the authentic Mexican food. Moving to Fairbanks, I assumed that I would not be able to find the same quality. I did! King Taco was up to par. Slight negative: they do not have taquitos.

  • Kenny M.

I was fairly dissatisfied. They took a long time with my order, couldn't understand that I didn't want cheese in my taco or tostada. The next part was that they gave me a beef taco instead of the chicken taco I ordered. Next, the taco and tostada were both extremely soggy, like a huge wet mess. I ordered through the drive thru, and they forgot to give me a fork to eat with. Lastly, half way through my chicken tostada, I found myself in a lot of pain as I bit into a chicken bone floating around in there. The only reason it is not a 1 star, is because of context: it is a fast food restaurant after all, and a cheap one at that.

wow. overpriced an low quality. I wont even go anymore after today. taco azteca in np is best these days imo.

  • Lesley L.

I was in Fairbanks for 4 days and we ate at taco king 2x. Great fresh food. Cheapest meal we had while in Alaska. The salsa bar was the bomb...grilled jalapeños, sour cream, and many different types of salas.

Really good food! For Fairbanks that's saying a lot, because most restaurants here are not worth mentioning unless they are worse than average.

We drove around the perimeter of Taco King a few times before stepping in. From the outside it looks like an old Burger King that's been shutdown. Fortunately, upon entrance the smell of fresh Mexican engulfs your fears. In the wild Alaska north, and the heart of Fairbanks, rests Taco King, real, damn-good, cheap Mexican in the land of the moose. Get ready to be shocked. We were. In fact, it's one of the best meals we had on our vacation here. I'm from Southern California and was terrified to try Mexican up here, but I think the guys that run this place are from down there too, or maybe further south, because they know how to serve up real Mexican. And, at first sight that might be in question, as much of the food is resting in heating lamps, etc. Fortunately, this place is popular locally and the food gets scarfed up quickly. To me, this seems like a mix of New Mexican and Mexican food, which is great - there's plenty of options on the menu, including posole and adovada from the New Mexican style and carne asade the more Mexican side. Regardless, they all tasted great, and we ordered a feast to try them all! Great flavor, huge portions and at a bargain. This place is awesome. There's a salsa bar, which daily made salsas. I'm sure it's going to be dirty, like it was when we were there, but that's what makes this place special. It's not a high end, fancy spot. It's where blue collar people eat and all the salsa and pico tasted great, as did the guacamole, which is made from avocados daily, rather than a pre-purchased mix. Nice job, guys!

  • Justin P.

Great mexican food! I ordered the carne Asada combo and it was delicious. The food definitely doesn't match the restaurant though. The food would be a great sit down meal, but the restaurant has a fast food feel to it. Overall, great food.

  • Ed B.

"A-OK" about sums it up. Nothing earth shaking here but they are very good tacos. Simple menu. Nothing fancy. Special Tacos are terrific. Beans and rice and other sides are pretty "meh". So, great tacos, mediocre everything else. Hence the 3 stars. Would go again.

  • Denedra B.

Love the food here! The only problem is the drive through sucks, lots of food for a good price and very filling! Must try if your craving Mexican but don't want to spend an outrageous amount!

  • Randol H.

Surprisingly good Mexican place in one of the last places you'd expect to find one in the US. Inexpensive prices, generous portions and delicious food means there's no complaints here. Had the daily special, tamales with rice, beans and a drink for 9 dollars. The tamales were dressed with cheese and didn't have the husk, but they were quite good. Highly recommended local business if you are in the area. Check out the pickled jalapeños by the salsa bar too.

  • Arturo F.

Mexican.. one of my favorite foods. Food was good here...a little pricey, but not in comparison to rest of Fairbanks. Portion size good and ample. Order at register and they bring food to your table. Decor a la fast food environment. Self serve bar, of variety of salsa temps and Pico De Gallo. Self serve soda station. Had the carne asada meal, yum. Came here 2-3x while in Fairbanks for a month.

  • Dulcinea S.

Went here with my husband about 1 week ago to a week and a half ago.. giving into his want for mexican food and this place is dirty...straight dirty! We went to the salsa bar and its dirty as usual which is no surprise to me but I am really done with this place! Forks and knives are not clean, everyone has the ability to touch them which is not my thing. We sit down waiting for my husbands food and there's a guy behind us (older gentlemen) who just happens to lay down under a table and fall asleep..because he was drunk and getting drunk off listerine...yes....mouth wash....a half empty bottle. My husband said his food wasn't even good, and we definitely won't be eating from there again.

  • Jeff M.

Not bad food but not the cleanest restaurant. I had the chili verde tacos which were good if somewhat bland. But the guy delivering the food to the tables looks like he was he his apron maybe last year. Then you start looking around and its pretty dirty. Hard to get past that.

    (3)
  • Bijal S.

Bad service. Took 50 mins to deliver food to 0.5 mile hotel. Cold food. Wrong order. Did not put stuff asked for in order.

  • Julie O.

I wanted to like this place but the whole experience was below average. It began w a really dirty basket w no lining that they gave me my stale old chips, a dirty salsa bar that is not properly refrigerated not even iced. I had the chicken burrito. The chicken was chunky and had bones. The whole dish needed FLAVOR. I used salt and salsa to try to flavor it up. I won't b back

  • Tami D.

This Mexican food is AMAZING! I grew up in El Paso, Texas which has some of the best Mexican food in the United States. I was not expecting much from a Mexican restaurant in Alaska but this place was as good as what I could get in my hometown. I ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken taco salad. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the salsas were authentically flavored. Plus, they delivered my order to my hotel in 30 minutes!

Came in, asked for something that is "Taco King". Got the Special Taco with beef. Pretty good for the price! The selection for hot sauce and extra toppings were excellent.

OMG I'm from Southern California and this is real deal mexican food!!!! Tastes like a great sit-down restaurant but you get super fast service, they bring it to you and take plates away. Good sized portions too!!!

About a really long ago, I still like his place and this is my 2nd favorite taco place. Ok service, I still never been inside, but I will come inside sometime. Mexican food in Fairbanks, I love those taco but the soft taco get wet on beef. I first came here around 2010 and I still like this place but the soft taco get soggy sometime.

It was kind of lackluster, but then again, my wife and I just moved from Texas. So, maybe the food is different up here? The menuedo comes in a giant bowl, but there was very little meat in the soup. I understand that it is more expensive in Alaska, but I would rather have it in a smaller bowl for presentation. The broth had spices, but it didn't have the big bold flavors that are good for hangovers. The lengua combo was something else I ordered. The rice was a little dry and old, but seasoning was on point. The beans...well, they were beans. I never really liked beans, but it tasted like beans from everywhere else. If that helps? Now to the meat. The lengua. Lengua has always been light on the flavor, but this one was disappointing. It was probably missing one thing...just a little bit of salt. Salt is the magical seasoning that people ignore because they are afraid it makes it too salty. BUT! Having the proper amount, it can bring out flavors in the meat. Again, maybe I am just bias because I miss my Tex-Mex/Mexican food. But I am sure I will eat here again, given some time.

  • Pb N L L.

I'm not fond of the place, I like my carne asada. For the Fairbanks region, if you're into Mexican food, this would be the "to-go" to place. Nothing fancy but your average Mexican food when you're really really hungry and far from deciding to cook.

    (4)
  • Mina S.

This place is a hidden gem in Fairbanks. I was surprised to find authentic and delicious Mexican food all the way up here. The service was great and everyone was very friendly. My husband had carne asada and I had the green chile pork and we both finished everything on our plates. I also ordered an horchata and was pleased to find it actually tasted like horchata. We were both pleasantly surprised by this place and can't wait to go back. They also have a drive-thru which is just great but there are plenty of tables to sit down inside too.

    (5)
  • Sergio A.

Had the carne asada plate with some Horchata and it was fantastic. great place for some good authentic Mexican food. Also the Horchata was very good, was glad to be able to get some good Horchata in fairbanks. Second time eating here and this time was even better than the last.

Don't let the appearance scare you..this place is great! Awesome food and great service. I had the carne asada combo and two side tacos! It was great!

swear to jeezy my dying words will be "2 special tacos carne asada with rice & beans" taco king, you rock. your employees are great. hit me with that pico. they even have a driveup for when you're too homely looking to be seen but still need your carne asada fix. i'm about it.

  • Jessica L.

Being so used to my regular place back in Colorado, the food was good! My husband got the steak quesadillas, which he loved. I got the steak deluxe burrito combo, which I thought was pretty good! It's not the best, but it's still really good!

    (4)
  • Lisa A.

People here can't take a simple order! Then when you call to complain they could care less! Food was sub par :(

While driving in Fairbanks, at every advertisement break was a spot for Taco King. Naturally, Taco King's tune got stuck in my head and a must visit need was created. Finding the Taco King was not at all difficult, the on air ad gave you the directions. I was not really hungry (that turned out to be a good thing), I just wanted to sample a simple item from their item; so that I could say that I had been. I ended up ordering a carne asada taco at $3.45 - yes a regular-size taco for over $3! So, how was the taco? It was like any average taco and therefore, no worth $3.45. I am sure there is a reason for tacos being $3.45 in Alaska. The good thing, is that I did get the need to go out of my system. Darn, when in Alaska, local advertising does indeed work.

  • G M.

We tried the lengua (beef tongue) & carne asada. Both had good flavour & were tender. The rice was nice & light, the beans tasted like regular beans. Horchata was like every horchata we've ever had, good but nothing fantastic. Service was very good. Everyone was polite, friendly & helpful.

  • Adam K.

Solid place, I've been a regular for 5+ years. Best plate of food for $10 (or under) in Fairbanks. The king burritos are good, but the carnitas (special, available often) hit the spot every time. The ingredients are fresh for the most part, and the food is spiced uniquely, so things don't just all taste the same. The condiment bar is unmatched, and has more pico, peppers, or crema for your giant plate of food. The standard bean and rice sides are above average. All in all, you can't go wrong with Taco King. It beats most Mexican food in the lower 48 in my opinion.

    (4)
  • Lara J.

THIS is the place for MEXICAN food in Fairbanks! That crud they have at that large sit-down place is NOT Mexican food. I love getting the Carne Asada especial tacos. The horchata is spot on. They usually have a daily special that comes with a drink. The guy that brings your food is really nice and scores extra points for understanding my awful Spanish. They also give free drinks to military.

    (4)
  • Anthony M.

The best tomales in Alaska. The food is very good. The staff is friendly. My family loves the tacos. Need to try this place out. You have to ask for the tomales. It's a lunch special on Monday.

  • Becki B.

I'm not sure who anyone is trying to kid here but this is really awful Mexican food. Just because you say you're from San Diego apparently does not mean you've had good Mexican food. This stuff is awful. The beans are so bland they're not even worth the space they take up. Canned beans have more flavor than these. The rice...my mom (who isn't Mexican) makes better Mexican rice. And the tortilla...did they run out of tortillas and then thought "oh yeah, I dropped one under the fridge a month ago...let's use that one". It was disgusting. The carne asada had so much fat and gristle that I couldn't eat most of it. And the avocados in the guacamole were so stringy at first look I thought it was yarn. This might be the best of what's available in Fairbanks, AK, but don't try to pass it off as good Mexican food. It really isn't.

    (1)
  • Casey H.

This place may look like another run of the mill fast food joint, but don't be fooled. We have driven by this place plenty of times and have completely written it off. Big mistake. You will find authentic mexican food with large portions, horchata made from scratch, and everything one would expect much further south of Fairbanks. They also have a drive through.

    (5)
  • Amanda M.

I can't believe that other reviewers are calling Taco King "authentic." Maybe that's just Fairbanks' low low standards when it comes to dining out, but this place is ANYTHING but authentic and to say so is an insult to the vibrant complexities of actual Mexican cuisine. The food is pretty bland and completely unseasoned, but the salsa/sour cream bar adds a little of the missing flavor back. I am a big fan of guacamole but this was soupy and tasteless (I'm not sure how they extracted even the avocado flavor from guacamole). I suspect it would be okay hangover food--except (FULL DISCLOSURE!) it upset my stomach in a way that only soupy, crappy Mexican food can.

    (2)
  • Jessica B.

The best Mexican food I've had in a really long time. They deliver on post! The portions are large and the tacos are the authentic small tacos that you can only get in Mexico. They have lots of different types of salsa which is nice when you have people who like a lot of spice and some that don't like any spice at all.

    (5)
  • J.D. G.

Pretty good food! Not sure I would call it authentic, but the food was tasty and relatively cheap. I would come back and try other dishes.

  • Angela M.

Great food and authentic. While I have had better, this is great for Alaska. Mexican food is not the speciality up here, lol. Definitely worth a try!

  • Enshane N.

First time here and very disappointed. The condiment/salsa bar was filthy - didn't want to go near it. Employee was hacking in the bathroom and came out looking tired and dirty. Lost my appetite immediately. The beef taco was good but chicken was another story: tasteless and dry, Refried beans were just as bad. Not sure what everybody is raving about because flavorless food is not authentic Mexican food. I'll stick to homemade.

  • Bronas B.

I'm from Atlanta and I'm a foodie. Hands down, this is the best Mexican food!!!! I've been to tons of Mexican restaurants and I can't believe the one in Alaska is the best (I visit family in Alaska every year and have to go at least twice each trip) It's so good and so cheap! The place doesn't look so great so don't come here on Valentine's day but any other day is perfect!

I called Pedro for delivery! I actually got the Anchorage store, and they took my order and placed it with the Fairbanks "hot spot". I was happy, oh and the food, authentic to the street tacos I had in TJ with my cousin....delish! And the prices are wonderful!

  • Jeremiah S.

This is one of those places that I just enjoy eating at. Its kind of its own class of restaurant, cause its like fast food restaurant, with a very authentic taste. Its different than a chipotle which has an authentic taste, but is a subway style place. Taco King is more like a burger king, but Mexican. I have never been disappointed with their food, and I thought the prices were good. If this place had that special draw for me, I would give it five stars.

  • Lya A.

We went in to order and take home since kids where tired. We didn't have a long wait, food was nice and fresh, warm and tastes good. The steak was Alittle chewy and had more fat then I like . Will go back since it was good still !! Can't wait to try more item.. Carna plate was def good! Cheese crisps where huge and kids loved them.

  • Paul W.

Wanted Mexican food and if you are the same, then this is the place you want. Not what I expected when I walked in, not a sit down take your order place, rather a counter and brought out you. Carne Asada burrito was perfectly cooked. Meat was tender and delicious. The only draw back was no chips and salsa, but you can order as a side, for $1.75, and the serving is enough to sure amongst three people.

Great for what it is, authentic fast food Mexican, not Taco Bell style. If you don't go in there expecting a lot then you will be pleased.

Delicious... and they were fresh, fast, and super accomodating with kids. I had Gordita's.... which of course are not at all related to the Taco Bell kind.) Rich delicious mexican. Yum!!! Fresh and Fast.

  • Stacie M.

Oh lord, Taco King, where do I begin? If you call for delivery, you are lucky if you get your order. If it does come, it takes 2 hours. This is not, I repeat NOT good Mexican food and whoever said that it was doesn't know good Mexican food. It is greasy and tasteless. They send 3 hot sauces in small plastic containers, one red, one green and one that is a brownish-red. If you combine all 3, you may get lucky and have some flavor, but not much. The carne asada is the only thing that is tolerable. I am from Texas and I know authentic Mexican, Taco King fits in neither category. It isn't authentic or Mexican. It is disgraceful to call it that. If you have never had good Mexican food, you may like this garbage.

Best Mexican food in Fairbanks hands down! Always friendly staff, great tacos nowhere in town competes.

  • Lewis O.

As noted elsewhere in the reviews, the building was a Burger King before it became Taco King. If you're looking for atmosphere, this ain't it. But the spices are right, and the beef is shredded not ground. It's quite good food, served in moderately large portions. I consider it the best Mexican food in town. I've had better in the southwest, but this is quite acceptable. It's good enough to keep me going back, while the other places in town are not. Choices include the usual tacos, enchiladas, and burritos, along with some things like carne asada which are a little less common. Choose whatever you like. Quality is consistent across the menu. And by all means try one (or more) of the peppers on the condiments bar. Very tasty and mild enough your scalp doesn't sweat.

  • Ian B.

I spent 8 years in SF and this is the closest I have found to decent Mexican. The special tacos and torta are the best items and what I get cravings for. I still haven't been able to find a taqueria-style burrito in town, but I'll keep looking. My favorite is the carne asada special tacos since they remind me of a taco truck. Sometimes they have carnitas and it's a nice alternative, but not the best I've had. It's a little tough for my tastes; I like my carnitas to be fatty and fall apart in my fingers. My recommendation is to ignore the more tex-mex items on the menu and stick with the tacos and torta.

This is a nice oasis in the north. All the food can be seen being cooked right up front. The people are nice and the food always seems to be fresh. The variety is pretty good as well. After we came home from having a baby, we ordered from here 3 days in one week.

My husband & I were both raised in San Diego, Ca., the land of awesome Mexican food. Sadly we now live in No. Carolina where they think authentic tacos come in the preformed shells. :(. Imagine our surprise while on vacation in Alaska we come across Taco King. Figuring it can't be any worse than what we have back home, we decided to try it. The first thing we both noticed on walking in for lunch was the tantalizing aroma if real Mexican food. We ordered our food at the counter (they bring it to your table), went to the little salsa bar by the soda machine and found fire-roasted peppers and sour cream also available (when is the last time you got free sour cream)! The food came and was delicious. My refried beans were creamy heaven and the carne asada burrito was great, it actually had a decent guacamole on it (avocados can't be cheap to get up here). Hubby had a taco and cheese enchiladas. The corn & flour tortillas were not store bought & had great flavor. For what is a fancy taco stand, this place is great. For those of you that do like the pre-formed "taco bell" type shells. They have a "Gringo Taco" on the menu as well. Over all Taco King is a giant step above regular "Alberto's" type taco stands and just below a traditional "Old Town San Diego" restaurant. The menu is small, but good. Our meal with sodas came to almost $20. Enjoy!

Okay where to start. First off I ordered my food at 5ish, and heard nothing for an hour, so I called back and they told me the lady was on her way with my order. Then when my husband called another hour later they told us they dropped off our order at the front desk at our hotel 30mins before we called. We called our hotel front desk and they said they never received anything. Again we called and they insisted that they delivered, we went down stairs and nope, and still they insisted when they came to the conclusion that they delivered to the wrong hotel. It was totally frustrating, and of course they came back and said it would be another half an hour to an hour for them to come back with a replacement meals, at that point my husband said screw it and just wanted our money back. As of right now, I totally wouldn't ever order out again from there. I will try to go to the restaurant itself to try the food and hope they have better costumer service there.

This place is horrible .... I don't even know how it is "called" Mexican food .... I am from down south and my family and I ate Mexican at least once a week for I'd say 10 years ... This was disgusting !!! My husband got a taco salad .. It was a pile of brown lettuce and a scoop of this nasty meat .... Some shredded cheese and a side of this "salsa like" vinegar sauce .... Will never ever ever go back .....ever !!!!

My standard is the regular Tostada that comes on a corn tortilla. A fancier tostada comes in the large deep fried tortilla which I avoid as I don't need the extra calories. Guacamore is only $.65 more which is a bargain. Choice of chicken or beef (gr beef like for a taco). The chicken comes with large chunks of breast meat. The serving size is great, not too large with lots of lettuce & tomatoes. I have been disappointed at other similar mexican restaurants in other AK cities because the tostadas do not live up to Taco King tostadas. The pico de gallo sauce is pretty good but could use more cilantro. The service is usually very fast. I've had the flan & deep fried ice cream, neither are spectacular and only fair. The ice cream had corn flakes or some coating. I've had one of the asada combos which was pretty tasty and they let me substitute salad for the mexican rice which I appreciated. That meal is more than I can eat at one setting and I always have some for leftovers. It's a step up from fast food and most if not all is real food, not processed. You can see pots of meat cooking on the stove.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
