Sourdough Mining Co. reminds me of the tourist shops that dot the beach on the Gulf Coast. They look really cool from outside - like the big shark shaped building in Gulf Shores. Here you have what you are led to believe is a real "mine". A complete tourist trap, you get to wait in line with huge groups of loud people before you can expect to get your seat. While it's cool looking from the outside, what's on the inside is cheap tourist fodder. The food is a roll of the dice. I had a steak which was decent but not "good". My wife had fish and chips which were so greasy that you could bite into them and taste more oil/grease/lard than fish. Crunchy wasn't involved in this either (sounds like they were cooking at too low a heat or they overloaded the frier). The corn fritters were fairly good and really all I would recommend as a memorable thing to eat (something I WOULD eat again). Outside of being a tourist trap, I imagine the food would be better if it were a slow night. I may give this another try sometime but not this summer.

I'm a tourist. I was there. There's lotsa neat things to take pictures of. There are plenty of gold mining artifacts laying around. I wish front area was a bit brighter so I can take pictures of the items in the front. They are your typical BBQ fair. What stands out is the corn fritters. It actually isn't that great if eaten alone; but once you add the honey butter, it's mouth watering! Some of their food is on the dry side. Their seasoned fries was also mouth watering. I was fascinated by the make your own soft serve ice cream station. It's included with the meal so I couldn't resist going up. Of course, I'm boring with my old fashioned Vanilla with Jimmies.

A must see for tourists. This uniquely Alaskan restaurant is favored by many tourists that visit Anchorage each summer. For that reason the locals usually steer clear during the summer. The interior is decorated as an old gold mine with many interesting items to look at while you are dining. Their halibut and BBQ are decent but the star of their menu is their corn fritters. They are a cross between corn hushpuppy and a doughnut. When you visit don't be in a hurry to leave. Across the street is a candy factory with a real chocolate water fall and a decent gift shop.

Attention Tourists: Eat where the locals eat. The locals eat at Glacier Brewhouse and Mooses Tooth. Locals avoid Sourdough Mining like cats avoid water. If you read some of the other reviews you already know that the prices are unrealistic. But that doesn't consider the cut corners. My $14 chicken sandwich had processed swiss. I'LL REPEAT. Processed swiss. We tried to use a coupon for $10 off 50. The check came to 49.90 and they wouldn't accept the coupon, because it wasn't $50. You know what? They're right- it wasn't $50, I missed it by a dime. They must have so many customers they don't need more.

I had the ribs with a side of beans and corn fritters. All delicious especially the corn fritters. Downside was how expensive it was. The service was just ok. I didn't like that I looked up towards the ceiling to see the thick layer of dust on the beams and how dirty the window pane was. Makes me wonder how the kitchen looks.

I think their only claim to fame is their corn fritters....sorry folks.

I fell in love with the corn fritters. Pair it with honey butter and the stuff is out of this world. The fritter batter is available by the tub, but why risk messing it up in your deep fryer at home? I suppose it's for the tourists who would like to take the goodness fresh to their motherland, or for stockpilers wishing to have some in their freezer in case of a natural disaster. At any rate, the fritters that come fried are fried to golden perfection. Hot, sweet, and spongy, the orbs are sized so that they are able to sop up every smear of honey butter in its container. A typical serving of six leaves me content. As for everything else they serve, I've had better. Their Sunday brunch buffet is pretty good but I feel it's overpriced for what they offer. The place does have a rustic feel, but is airy and can be bright when the sun is out. There is plenty of seating so it's good for groups. I have had a little bit of the wait issue other Yelpers have had, so prepare for extended socializing. I'm not much for dine-in here - they'll usually see me just pick up the fritters and go. SM Co. corn fritter fanboy here. Four stars to the corn fritters and nothing else.

Terrible food and equally terrible service.

Once a year we go here for dinner and have always enjoyed it. It is a bit touristy but still enjoyable. Food has always been good and the price is not bad for Anchorage. Servers are always friendly and service is pretty quick. If you are visiting and don't have a car, there is a bus service that will pick you up from your hotel for free.

Went with my daughters family while visiting recently (01-2012) and ordered chicken fried chicken. The meal came with a huge portion of mashed potatoes, steamed veggies on the side. This was a huge meal, very good quality comfort food. Worth a visit.

You pay for the atmosphere, not the food. Let's face it, this is a tourist trap. I was there during the lull between lunch and dinner, and there was hardly anyone there. So the service was fair, but the hostess and waitress seemed to be just going through the motions. Not much in the way of smiles or anything out of the ordinary. I was very disappointed in the BBQ Beef Brisket sandwich. When I went to pick up the sandwich, the entire lower bun disintegrated in my hand. They had placed some seasoned butter on the meat, and as it melted, it had turned the bun into a soggy mess. But who puts butter on a brisket sandwich? Apparently Sourdough Mining Company does. The corn fritters that are so legendary? They're okay, but not worth going out of your way for. If you want to do the tourist thing, and sit in an entirely un-authentic "mining company" building, then this restaurant is as good as any.

This place is okay, I personally looked at the menu thinking "maybe we should go somewhere else" simply because everything is high dollar, most items (at dinner) are $25+, none of them seem special, I figure I can go to a number of other places and get similar menu items for a fraction of the cost. If I go back, it'll definitely be at lunch time, it seemed to be that the menu items were more appetizing looking with half the price. Our waitress was smothering, geez lady, just drop off the food and leave me alone. She felt the need to tell us about the ketchup, the mustard, the napkins, the barbecue sauce, the salt, the pepper, the butter. Like, wtf, stop talking and go away, "maybe you could've brought everything that I asked for with my meal to begin with until waiting until my plate's nearly clear." or here is an idea, focus on filling the glasses when their empty instead of hanging out at the table filled with military guys, trying to work on your tip...sorry, but they clearly thought you were annoying also, That being said, we had a bacon cheeseburger and halibut strips, neither were anything to write home about, but both were good. I'll stop my rant now.

I am feeling generous because initially I was toying between 4 and 5. The average 2.5 star is just not right! I am in town visiting family . I remember growing up and visiting... of course I don't particular remember it as a fine dining experience....I was feeling nostagic and my dad was sick so we had one of their meal deals delivered. The driver was friendly and prompt. We enjoyed the corn fritters, baby back ribs and the moist BBQ chicken. I would definitely order again.

I ate here a few weeks ago, and I had one of the best ribeyes I had in a long time, a must. If anything go for the corn fritters and honey butter alone.

I was a bit disappointed with our buffet breakfast experience for the price. It was pretty expensive and a lot of the things were cold. I think I could have made a better breakfast for less at home. Nevertheless, it was an interesting experience. But I wouldn't go back.

Again, I am surprised. No reviews, and there should be! Sourdough Mining Company is a nifty little place with some decent food, and fun entertainment. Sometimes it leans towards the tourists, as it should be as it is a step backwards in time. The interior is a rustic old hall type feeling, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and very busy! If you are going to try this place, do so before 4:00pm. The dinners and lunches run the same gamut, but the prices increase. The meat dishes are good, and large, and the fish servings are all Alaskan Fish! There are "Shows" in the Tent side of the property, and for the outsider, they are very entertaining. A good note is the Alaskan Berry Company is walking distance, and the Peanut Farm is also close at hand. Reservations sometimes needed! Give it a try!

Wow someone agrees with me about the lousy service...My server "Nick" could have cared less if we were from Mars...The food was good...but lets face it folk without good service it is just a waste of hard earned money.. I did complain to the manager on duty...her reply was "I am shocked no one has ever complained before about "Nick"..he has been here forever. That tell me he is well liked among his coworkers The reason he is.... because they were the ones I had to ask for drink, butter, tartar sauce and bread...Nick was busy chatting with someone else... How can you be working somewhere "forever" and "never" have had one complaint.????..come on....I would not recommend this place to anyone traveling to Anchorage..it cost to much money for that type of service...I do not live in Alaska but I do know the difference between good and horrible service...There are to many great places to eat in Anchorage, Ak...

The only thing I like here, are the corn fritters. I do not like the service, or anything else on the menu. Just the corn fritters and honey butter. My husband's in the Air Force, and his squadron's Christmas party this past year was catered by them. I ate 23 fritters.

My family and I went here for the brunch buffet, and my company just had it's Christmas party at Sourdough for lunch. The beef briskett is good. For brunch they had enough food but nothing really tasted great. They had things such as crab cakes, BBQ ribs, reindeer sausage, precooked western omelettes, green salad, macoroni salad, fried potatoes, and corn fritters (which are also tasty with the honey butter), and more. The price to eat here is not worth it. The family style food service we received at the Christmas party was terrible. The lowest priced meal was $20.75 for BBQ chicken and brisket. They brought out two soup bowls of coleslaw, one dinner plate of brisket, one of corn fritters, one of waffle fries, and one of bbq chicken for seven people. We asked for another plate of each one but the coleslaw because of course it was not enough especially with three grown men eating among the seven. The server did not want to bring out any more but hesitantly did. To top it off kids under ten still had to pay half price so our 2 year old guests still had to pay and they played more than they ate. The service on both of my visits were not attentive - we had to get the servers attention everytime we needed something. The restaurant is large so seating is not a problem for one or groups, and the same is true for parking. I would not recommend this restaurant for two reasons: it's to pricey, and the food is not tasty/worth it. I guess this is another highly publicized tourist spot as the Alaska Wildberry store is across the street.

Not so hot. Bugs flew around during dinner. Overhead could stand to use some serious cleaning. Ribs were from something skinny without much meat. Side dinner salad was equally not worthy of a positive comment. Not sure why this place is still in business. Certainly not from repeat customers.

Definitely a tourist trap. The prices are astronomical for the quality of food served. I had the salmon, which was very overcooked and dry. Others in my party had the rack of ribs, which didn't have much meat on them. The corn fritters and waffle fries offered at least partial redemption and were very good.
