I have been here twice now. The first time was about a year or so ago, and I wasn't incredibly impressed. I'm not a huge Asian food eater and definitely not a sushi kind of guy. I ordered some generic Asian dish that I knew I'd had before that I was confident I could stomach. On that visit alone Id have given Dish three stars. Not terrible, not great... Now, on the second visit it's a whole different story. Like I said, I am not a big sushi guy. I've had it maybe 5 or 6 times in my life, and never really cared for it. Apparently I have never had decent sushi until this point in my life. We ordered the sushi and sashimi platter to split between two of us. It was a platter of a few rolls, nigiri and sashimi of the chef's choice. And it was amazing... As far as I could tell, we received tuna, fatty tuna, red snapper, and prawns. I couldn't tell what the roll we received was, but it was definitely tasty and well made. Our server was very friendly and well timed with everything. We sat at the sushi bar; the sushi chef was friendly and even gave us a complementary salmon cheek while we were waiting for our meal. We both ordered saki based cocktails that were well made and tasted great. Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal and I will definitely be trying Dish again next time I am looking to go out for sushi. If they pull of another meal on the same lines as this one I will most likely move them up to a 5 star rating...

wasnt going to review but decided i would. i tried to make a pickup order 20 minutes before they closed and they said it was too late. too late?! i couldnt believe it! the fkn restaurant wasnt even closed and they told me they wouldnt make my order. arent restaurants in business to make money? take my money!! you closed off business too early. i dont know if the owner reads these reviews but if you say youre open till 10, serve food till fkn 10. its not like i wanted to sit there and eat and keeping your people there past hours, i planned on taking it home.

We came here for lunch with a few friends on a Saturday afternoon. The food here is really good and comes out pretty quick! The staff is nice and professional and they have pretty big portions! They also have a nice atmosphere, but I find that to be the case with most sushi restaurants in town. Honestly, it's getting hard for me to pick out the top sushi joints. A few bad ones stick out (dami and yamaya). I would come back, I think their portions are bigger than some of the other spots. Their food and service and ambiance are all great!!

I'm not sure how I feel about this place after one visit, however I'm still not sure if I want to go back and give it a second chance. It gives off a kind of rich, classy, you expect it to be mind blowing good feel, but I just thought it was okay and pretty pricey for what you get (at least for lunch anyways). I went in for lunch with a coworker. You walk in and see a really nice restaurant with white table cloths and nice place settings, then the casual dressed/mannerisms of the server throw you off your game a bit. They say they have lunch specials, but they weren't priced any different from their normal menu. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box. They start out by giving you a small salad and miso soup, very standard, nothing good or bad to say about it. The bento box comes with a couple pieces of shrimp & veggie tempura, which again pretty standard/nothing special and as to be expected, also comes with two pieces of gyoza, which I think was decently done and had some good flavor, and also comes with a california roll. This is already my least favorite roll, but I ordered the bento box because it gave me a chance to try a variety of things for lunch. The roll was just standard and did lack flavor, but again I'm not generally a fan of california rolls. The chicken teriyaki however, was the saving grace of my bento box, it was pretty well done, chicken was a little on the chewy side, but the flavor was exactly what I was hoping for.

First, I'm not a sushi connoisseur as I don't know a lot about fish, and I have only eaten at 10 or 12 sushi places in my life. Second, I don't know that I have ever had five-star sushi or what it would be like. My ratings are from my guts, and my guts give Dish a four. In fact, the sushi places I go to and enjoy the most are all fours. So maybe four is my five for sushi? The food is really great. They have the standard array of sushi choices, my favorite Nigiri being Unagi (eel), which is easy to overdo and make mushy, and which can sometimes have a weird sauce--but theirs is nice, slightly smoky, a good compliment. My other Nigiri standards are Sake (salmon), and Maguro (tuna), both of which are always tender and tasty, melting on the tongue like I think raw fish should. They also always taste fresh and are served at the appropriate temperature. I don't like cold sushi because it kills the flavor. My favorite basic rolls are Tekka Maki and Kappa Maki (tuna and cucumber, respectively). I have eaten a couple of their special rolls now, and I prefer the crunch and the boyfriend for a good mix of ingredients and because they aren't too heavy on the mayo. Their rolls in general are well-made: they don't fall apart, but they aren't chewy either. It all just floats in the mouth in a fresh, yummy way. We have always had great service here, whether at a table or the sushi bar. Servers are nice, professional, prompt. Normally, I don't care about the atmosphere for sushi--I want good food. But this place is a funky, hip atmosphere that isn't too formal but can be fun for a dress up/go out kind of night. The music isn't overwhelming but not generic pop. I like that they serve unique cocktails in addition to some basic wine choices because I am not a beer or sake drinker, so I often just drink water with sushi. At Dish, I can enjoy drinking and eating. This is becoming a regular place for me. As for the damn song, I wouldn't have known to check the place out without it, but I can't stand it for the ear-worm quality (a problem my husband adds to by singing it whenever we talk about the place).

My favorite sushi in Anchorage! The tempura fried ice cream is a great dessert. Love the sake bar. Order a sake flight, describe what you like and try some new ones. I always get the deadliest catch roll with the mango pieces. So yummy!

I've been to dish multiple times due to convenient location and the 'hip' atmosphere of this place and have liked them quite a bit however it's a little different these days. As a consumer/customer it feels like they've started charging everything extra since they've really got their name out. A big group of us (about 8 people) went to dish and the waitress offered hot tea and edamame to which some of us said yes to only to find out later that each of those things were like 3 dollars extra, each of them. It was never like this when they were starting off. I know that 3 dollars is not huge amount of money but it adds up and was annoying especially when you weren't expecting it. And especially because they didn't used to charge for those things! Service wise is always hit or miss. I don't know if they have high turn over rate but some servers just aren't very helpful. I hate to be that person who asks to speak with "the manager" but what can u do when the server u have answers every question with maybe, I'm not sure, let me check (and never follows up). Food however is delicious. But if i have to leave the restaurant with a sour taste in my mouth due to multiple things mentioned above, no thank you. My friends and I'll just hang ay moose's tooth right behind dish.

I wasn't wild about Dish. A coworker wanted to try something different, and I gave in. I had a roll, and it came with miso soup and a green salad. Typical for most of the sushi spots in town. However, edamame was not included which annoyed me a little. The food was just okay. What really made this more annoying was the constant helicopter service. I swear my water glass never got a half inch below the rim before it was filled to meniscus level again. As soon as I was done with my soup, salad, and sushi, the plates were whisked away. I did not like this. Additionally, it was super cold in here. Now, I know you gotta keep the sushi cold, but not the customers. Won't be back.

I went here with a large group, 10 people or so. We had a reservation and let them know before we ordered that we would all be on separate checks. Dinner was fun a little slow but we didn't mind. But our experience went TOTALLY south when they tried to bill us. First off they came back and started asking everybody what they got cause they hadn't been keeping track, they then came back with a large receipt with 8 checks on it and told us to find ours and pay accordingly. They took almost an HOUR just to charge us. Once we finally all got our bills back we started realizing that they had charged almost everybody wrong. We sorted it out which took another 30 minutes but we were patient with them. We left they told us have a good night half our party had driven off and then someone comes out telling me we still owe them 200 dollars, um excuse me? We have all been charged we have our receipts and we are already LEAVING and you tell us we owe you more. No. If they couldn't figure out our bills in the hour it took them and charged us wrong that's on you buddy. Then I decided to check my bank account, my bill was over a hundred dollars and I wanted to be sure they charged me correctly. They did not. They ILLEGALLY CHARGED MY CARD 250 DOLLARS AFTER I LEFT THE RESTURANT. I did NOT authorize the TWO additional transactions they put through on my card. I will NEVER go here again. The food was mediocre and the service was down right awful. And I fully plan on filing a dispute claim against them for fraud. GO FUCK YOURSELF DISH.

I had the Dragon Roll for $16. Service was quick and friendly. A nice facility with great music, which made for a great atmosphere. Altogether we had 4 rolls, 4 drinks and two tempura Green Tea ice cream. The total came to $100. Be prepared to spend a little more here. We had a great dinner, so if you decide to come to Dish, make it a special occasion.
Came here when they 1st open it was great very impressed with service and quality. It's been a few years and it's slowly gone down hill, but the cost has gone way up. Some fine examples of this are Beef broth for chx soup or any other soups. Not listing mushrooms in the soup on the menu. Kinda sucks because you get 5 pounds of them. $3 for a side of rice. $10 + for 99.9% of the rolls $12 for 6 wings that came from a freezer bag from Costco then covered in sauce. You charge over $5 for a cucumber roll. Ice with your 3 ounces of water and no straws to get to that water. Refills are ice to the top then beverage. When football is on your service is almost as good as being helped by a 3 year old. The difference is you think it's cute when it's a kid and it's frustrating when it's not. We had been asked multiple times if we are ok... This was nice but not noticing that we had to pull out all of the mushrooms and not noticing we are out of water is kinda frustrating. I have been to some cheap and some expensive sushi places. They have goods and bad things about them. I feel Dish started with all the right intentions then lost its way and has tried to fix it with added cost on good. I understand that you want to serve great food but cost is huge and only offering $10+ rolls makes people rethink what sushi place to frequent. I personally like to order 2 to 3 rolls. That's well over 40 bucks that's just me. Your food cost are not that high. I don't feel that the complementary Oreos are truly free, you have already payed for them in the high cost of the food. I found out why the prices are so high its the last hour of being open you have had less than 5 tables but you have 4 cooks that say goodbye and 7 servers and a host and a manager. I am pretty sure you had more staff than customers for over an hour. Send someone home or make them work on getting ice or cleaning off the tables they all had been at the host stand and all said goodbye before we walked out after waiting 20 mins for our check. Dish I am sorry but it will take a lot to ever get me to come back.

Prices were very steep - even for lunch. I come from a land of delicious and affordable sushi (New Orleans - go to origami in the university area-YUM) and this is the first place I was steered towards for sashimi. I had the sashimi lunch one day. Very tasty - but expensive compared to what I'm used to. A few days later, my dad and I came back with a big group for dinner and made reservations for 10. They sat us in a private room and gave everyone complimentary miso, salad and fried Oreo dessert. I had the raw fish over rice dinner and added a hand roll. Everything was really good - but again really expensive. You get what you pay for and I will return to dish, but it looks like I'm gonna have to tame my sushi habit. Anchorage is expensive! Very disappointed. I hadn't eaten at "Dish" for over a year and recommended it for a date. Although the decor is up beat and modern the food was lacking flavor. We choose the Ace's sushi role which was bland and all the flavors blended together. The Soy 1 roll also lacked definition of flavors but was slightly better than the Ace's roll. The house special "2015" was the best of the 3 rolls/barely, without the topping the roll would also contain no definition of taste. When asked how we liked our meal (the Ace's roll we could not finish, yuck!!) my date gave an honest opinion of the bland meal. The manager came and apologized and gave us a discount, our waiter seem to take offense and argued with us, defending the poor meal (poor customer service) . We won't be back. The sushi I buy at Carrs is 100% better sushi than at "Dish" Very Very disappointing ....................

The true test of any good sushi restaurant is the unadulterated piece of raw fish and rice, not a roll. In this test, Dish failed miserably. My pieces of sushi were completely tasteless and my salmon skin handroll was so fishy tasting I could barely swallow it. The fact that animals gave their lives to be made into this sushi made me weep. If for some (crazy) reason you are hell bent on going to this restaurant, than definitely go with one of their 50 or so different rolls that are so covered in sticky sweet sauce that (or so that) you can't even taste the fish. If this is the best sushi restaurant in Anchorage, and you live there, I implore you to only eat sushi when you travel. If you're visiting Alaska, as I was, wait til you get home.

Visited this place with my sister, and I wasn't super in love with it. Pretty spacious, decently decorated, and when we went it was pretty filled with people. I got the crunch roll while my sister got the lobster roll, which we shared. To me, both sushi's didn't taste that much different from any other sushi place I've been to, so there wasn't a "WOW" reaction to the dish-but it satisfied my sushi craving. And I have to say with a warm heart how much I love that they had thai ice tea (my guilty pleasure). Oh and they gave us complimentary fried oreos for dessert, how nice!

Very mediocre overall. The ambience was nice, even for lunch, though the sunny windows were way too hot and bright and the tables were ridiculously large for just two people (they could easily sit nine). I guess it's better than sitting next to the bathroom and not having enough space. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and well dressed, though I think most Asian restaurants assume you know what you're getting. That's a big assumption, especially in Alaska. Right off the bat I ordered fresh rolls and asked if they had plum tea (they did not). The fresh rolls were definitely not the best I have had. The wrappers were thick, there was a strange fishy taste to them that I was not used to and the sauce was cloying and lacked spice. I perused the ample menu, which did not include the standard tekka or nigiri inserts. Most of their rolls (2 oversized pages) sounded incredibly repetitive and there is far too much use of avocado and cream cheese. I instead ordered ika nigiri, which was tougher and less flavorful than I was used to, and the sashimi lunch (12 pieces of chef's choice). I really wish when they presented the chef's choice they would tell you what fish you are eating (especially if they don't have those little photo placards on the table) so that perhaps you could come back and order it as nigiri (and make them more money). Nevertheless it was nicely prepared and presented. The fish was fresh and tasted wonderful, though it could have been colder. There was ample wasabi and ginger as well. Lunch was served with miso, which was standard fare, a bowl of steamed rice, and a small salad, which had way too much citrus in the watery dressing. I was intrigued by many of their cocktails, though there wasn't enough information about the sake. I also did not see any sparkling sakes on the menu so I passed. More than three times one of the busboys came over to clear our table and each time he addressed us as if he hadn't before, even though we were the only ones left in the restaurant for a late lunch. At one point (since our waiter had never returned) I asked him if one of the fish on the sashimi plate was swordfish (my best uneducated guess). He apologized for being new and not knowing the menu. The bill was presented without a fortune cookie or even a mint.

Heard about this place on the radio and have seen commercials in the past. Looked interesting to me so I gave it a try. I went with my friend and her son. Ordered a drink, had guava and saki or something like that in it. Wasn't that bad. I order two different rolls and my friend ordered calamari and something for her son. Our server was kind. When the food came, the presentation was okay, not the best. As we tried our dishes, The taste of the sushi wasn't good & the prices are ridiculous! Definitely, will not recommend this place to my friends or family. I feel like there are better sushi spots in town than the dish.

I have been frequenting Dish for a few years now. And I have watched the service go downhill over those few years. Now I have worked for a hospitality industry business myself so I have a base level expectation for most places. I understand mistakes can be made and orders can go out wrong. But the base level expectation is for the restaurant to admit the mistake and make it right. This is where my problem lies with Dish. The story starts with some bad tuna. It was clear to anyone who has tried sushi before that the tuna the sushi chefs used on my fiancee's roll was poor. Half of the roll had fresh, deep-red looking tuna on it. However the other half looked colorless, and like it should have been used to make spicy tuna. When paying a premium for a small amount of food it is perfectly acceptable to expect quality. Dish seemed to disagree. We sent the roll back with the minor request to use better tuna, as it was clear that one side was fresh and the other side was old. We just wanted to replace the old tuna with fresh tuna. Instead of admitting their use of old tuna they came back to us saying even if they were to remake the roll (not what we wanted them to do) it would look the exact same, because that was the "only tuna they had". They made the claim that this tuna was cut closer to the skin and that was the reason for the appearance (not true by the way). We were then informed to order another roll if we didn't like it. The waitress was relaying the information from the sushi chef, she was extremely unknowledgeable when asked any followup questions so we requested to chat with a manager. The manager came out, we explained everything again, and she basically said the same thing. Just as a disclaimer: we have no problem paying for something that's correct, even if it had to get fixed. But we didn't feel comfortable having to pay for a low quality item that Dish refused to correct. The manager was more interested in proving her point about the tuna! Even after taking the item off the bill. As if somehow we offended her personally because we were served bad fish and had the audacity to ask for something better that would justify the $17 price tag. During this unnecessary argument session from her, she sarcastically let us know that we were actually getting BETTER quality more expensive fish because we were being served Toro (tuna belly/fatty tuna). This was again untrue because all Toro I have seen and eaten has had some sort of marbling and a distinguishable color, they stuff they served us simply looked and tasted like old tuna. She even wanted to bring their tuna invoice out to prove her point. Now before this altercation, I probably would have rated dish a sold 3. They are usually consistently mediocre, with the service being below average. But this instance made me realize that this place is an absolute joke to be named "Best Sushi in Anchorage". Why in the world would a manager of a hospitality service business want to argue with their customers? If she would have simply apologized and was cordial about it, I would have probably kept my opinions to myself because there is no need to write a review of a mediocre place.

I have always loved this place! I've been gone for a year & just got back to Alaska. My girlfriends wanna meet up... We head straight to the Dish their sushi is delicious, fresh and always presented beautifully! My favorite drink is the Sakerita, very refreshing. The staff/service the best and the restaurant decor is phenomenal! Prices are very reasonable.I definitely recommend this place to any and everyone.

I took my wife for dinner at the Dish, I was worry that since there was only 40 min. till closing. The server gave us one of the best services I've seen in Anchorage. When we asked what the difference was on the size of their Japanese Beer, she actually took the time to bring out the bottles to show us. Often check to see if we needed anything else, and to top it off she gave us a complementary deep fried Oreo's, that where fantastic. The sushi was good, rice a bit falling apart, maybe cause it was the last batch of rice, but the service made up. We will diffidently be back!

This place is good, but I've had a lot of sushi in my lifetime which i can't really get out of my head/palette. The service was very friendly and food was pretty good, but you really can't compare to the sushi in Hawaii (or Japan). On a side note: Quite a few Anchorage locals love this place, so I think it's one of the best places in downtown Anchorage to get sushi. They had the classic types of nigiri sushi and a whole menu of very creative (some oddly unusual) sushi rolls. Many of them are fried with a whole bunch of various ingredients inside. They get 5 stars for creativity! The calamari was delicious and I had the philly roll and spicy tuna rolls and they were fresh and presented beautifully. Kinda pricey ($12-$15) for the rolls, but it is a pretty trendy place. I'd definitely go back, but it's not on the top of my list for sushi places.

I've been here a few times and while I enjoy the interior and service the food has never struck me as great. The rolls were very small and poorly made, the gyouza was greasy and soggy, and the sashimi itself was just okay. I like the interior a lot, it's very well done and contemporary. The service is always friendly and attentive which is why I would go again, but overall the food is nothing great.

First off it was way too cold in that restaurant. Next my food(beef teriyaki w/shrimp tempura) was poorly cooked. Tempura was soggy and beef tasted like a frozen mess from the freezer. My wife's hand rolls were ok, she loves her sushi and wasn't impressed. We were so turned off by this place that we turned down free dessert by the server, which is a first for me. Lastly we told the server we wanted nothing else and she proceeded to make us sit there for 15 minutes before my wife had to tell the server we were in fact done to get our check. My wife and I were both in food service, our patience rarely is tested. Overall terrible experience since being in AK.

I've been eating here for about four years. I've really never been disappointed, but I'm not a big sushi freak. Everyone else in the family knows what they like, and no matter how different it may sound, they always are happy with their selection. So, for sushi lovers, this place is tops. Nice drink selection as well, but the nice thing about the place is the variety of non sushi dinners. I like rolls, and those are good too, but they offer tempura, bento boxes, Chinese and Korean specialities as well. So while the sushi freaks are more than satisfied, so am I. Check out the menu online, it's all good.

I have had consistently good sushi here. I have done a lot of take out from here, so I'm not too sure about the dine-in experience lately as I haven't dined in for about a year. The last time I went the service was slow and it was on the expensive side, but the food was really great. The atmosphere is also pretty great; the place is very modern and fun. I would give it 3.5 stars for my last dine-in experience. If you are getting take-out the food earns a solid 4.5 stars on its own merit. In short: Pros: Great sushi, fun atmosphere, servers are friendly Cons: Expensive and service is a bit slow Recommend? Yes, the sushi is up there among the best places in town, but there ARE better ones.

The food here is good. The tempura Oreos are a nice little end treat. I'm not opposed to coming here, but it is really expensive for what it's worth. I will opt to go to other sushi places, unless a friend suggests coming here. It really irks me when sushi joints jack up the price because they have a nice-looking menu using the Papyrus font and funnel a ton of money into decorating the place, and the customer ends up having to pay for that expense. Dish is very pretty to look at, with artsy partitions between tables, fancy bench-style tables, a baby grand, and an elevated sake bar. But I would much rather eat cheaper at a place that wasn't as posh in appearance. Another annoyance are "sake-tinis." You're paying the price of a martini or margarita, with not nearly as much alcohol or flavor as a real one. Mixing 2 ounces of sake with some flavored juices and charging $8-10 is simply a rip-off. Especially if that mixer contains Gekkeikan, which is probably the cheapest sake you can buy for about $8 at Brown Jug. Also, it seems to take forever to even get an order in. Maybe I have come to Dish every time they've been exceptionally busy. The hosts and servers are nice, for the most part, don't get me wrong. But once I sit down, I have an idea of what I'm gonna order, and it's annoying to wait 10 minutes before the server (who usually ducks away, avoiding eye contact, while hurrying around and delivering other people's food) acknowledges me. It's not a bad place. It's just not that great. The food is consistently good, but the other things I mentioned detract from its overall value.

Sitting at the sushi bar waiting for two rolls equals 45 min wait. Waitress apologizes twenty minutes after the order and twenty minutes later still nothing. All the while four "chefs" stand laughing behind the bar making sushi at the rate of one order every five minutes between the group. Sushi was pretty weak, edible, but on par with supermarket sushi.

I ordered the Mongolian beef, it was so good, moist and plenty for 2. We sat at the saki bar and the bartender was nice and very attentive to our needs. My husband got a sushi plate with some pretty big hunks of fish he said it was good minus the tuna. We spent 60 bucks which included soup salad and a mojito we split (which was very tasty). It was pretty crowded and the ambiance was nice... we can't wait to go back!

Now I have recently gotten back from Japan so I have somewhat of a bias. we started with seafood Yakitori- it really was a sad looking dish (nothing but the overcooked seafood and green onion between.). The tempura was soggy, which seems the norm if not set on a rack to drain the oil. The sashimi & sushi lunch was pretty standard, however, didn't come with rice. I won't be revisiting this establishment. On a lighter note- a very nice looking decor and attractive waitress' as state elsewhere.

I absolutely love sushi, and so I make a point of eating sushi (frequently) wherever I live or travel. The Dish has a great atmosphere, but I cannot say the same about the sushi. It's not that the sushi is bad, it's just that the sushi isn't good. I like my sushi to have a lot of flavor and "kick" to it, and all the rolls I have tried (about 6 total) have tasted pretty much the same - bland. I will probably eat here again because it is close to my office, but it wont be very often. For those folks who enjoy a milder taste in sushi, you will probably like The Dish. For those who prefer sushi with a strong flavor and want to actually taste the difference in your rolls, I recommend another sushi bar.

Every time I come to town I must make a stop here. Sure it looks nice and they have a great line up of sushi rolls but i'm here to tell you the Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken are no joke! Give them a run with some infused Sake and get ready for a fun night. If you have a sweet tooth try the deep fried OREO's. Come check this place out, I promise you'll be back.

First off, the food was delish at Dish! 3 of us had sushi while 2 others in our party opted for cooked food. One ordered YUMMY sesame chicken while the other ordered Mongolian beef. Apparently the mongolian beef was still good the next morning and is the "perfect hangover food". The sushi was great! We had no problems and we can't wait to go back. However, I must say, MAKE RESERVATIONS! It's a busy place and you WILL wait otherwise in their tiny waiting room. Also, if you want Sake, drink it at home....we paid $29 for a bottle and found the SAME one at the liquor store for $12! YIKES!

I admittedly don't know what "real sushi" is supposed to taste like having never been to Japan, but I think Dish is pretty A-ok anyway. I usually get the chicken bento (comes with a little bit of everything) and for the $12 or $13 is costs, I am full on miso, salad and a huge spread of rolls, chicken and potstickers. Totally worth it for lunch - though I have never been there for dinner, I hear the menu is the same but a bit pricier.... The atmosphere is great - I can't help but stare at the distressed glass room dividers and think "how did they do that?" My husband and I usually sit at the sushi bar and the guys working always make us feel very welcome without breathing down our necks or making it uncomfortable. Need a sweet treat on the way out the door? Grab a mini chocolate bar from the large bowl - it's worth it too.

Sorry to say we (four adults and a child) had a uniformly bad experience here. Our food took almost an hour to arrive with no explanation, and two of four orders were wrong or incomplete. Our waitress was inattentive, dismissive and unapologetic. Then the restauarant tried to charge us for the dishes served in error even though they took them back.

I may be the only person who doesn't like this place in Anchorage- there could be several explanations for this: 1. Other people I talk to about The Dish don't really know what good sushi is. 2. They only care about atmosphere (which, I have to admit is amazing) 3. I am a sushi snob. I ordered the crunch roll with 6 pieces of sushi lunch special. Crunch roll- pretty good, also pretty hard to mess up. However I had serious issue with my sushi. One of my favorites is yellow tail tuna or hamachi. I know it was supposed to be hamachi because my boss ordered a pair- and it looked just like mine. You know what it looked like? Not the beautiful yellowish pink fish I am used to, but grey. I wanted to vomit. The second I saw it I knew either the sushi chef has no idea what hamachi is and gave is the wrong thing- or their hamachi is NO GOOD! Basically, I refuse to eat RAW fish that looks like a piece of slate and is served of the the warmer side of room temperature. It is going to take some serious nagging to get me to walk back into that restaurant. I should be giving it one star. Aside from my fish looking down right inedible, the server didn't bring me water until I begged for it and also forgot to bring me napkins and chopsticks. She passed it off and giggled saying, "these tables are usually set for 4". Ya well count and when you realize there is more than 4 bring extra essentials like water and utensils. Speaking of water- of of the other diners I was with pointed out the "floaties" in the water. For me, bad day to go hungover, chugging water. If the water isn't good at a restaurant, what makes you think anything else is going to be good!? And, one more gripe that may sound slightly racist, and probably is. I am used to hole in the wall sushi restaurants that are family owned by Japanese or Korean immigrants. I am used to fast talk, fast service and language barriers- however almost always trust to just ask to be served whatever is good that day. I would NOT try that at The Dish. All the waitresses were 16 years old cheerleaders.

To a large extent, I have to agree with most of what the more lower ratings people have given Dish. With that being said, I'll throw in my two cents. This is not a Sushi bar. If you define Sushi as prepared dishes that are commonly called sushi, then sure, you've got yourself a Sushi bar. What this really is, is a fusion type restaurant. I'll admit, the decor is nice as well as the atmosphere. However, when I see Sushi, I like others, am a snob. If I'm paying large prices for small dishes I expect quality and taste. Most of my sushi rolls were covered with a pepper or hot sauce of some sort. I had to wonder what I was really eating when it's being masked like this. This masking of flavors hides the very taste of the expensive fish I committed to buy. Think of it as buying USDA Prime steak and then having someone burn it to a crisp and serve it to you - Bon Appetite! Also, my nigiri and sashimi was not fresh. It tasted like frozen fish to me. Again, insulting me with the lure of a real sushi bar and serving me fish from Costco or Fred Meyer. For their prices, I expect their sous chef to be down at whatever fish market picking up the best fish he can. Outside of the sushi, their others dishes seemed to be fine, some quite good. Sushi is the highlight for me and this was a burned out lightbulb. Find another sushi place if you are really into sushi, there are better ones.

The atmosphere is trendy, the employees are friendly and helpful (especially if you're new to the sushi world, like me) Great prices! Try their crunch rolls... MMM! I was pleasantly surprised by this place after my fiance brought me there for dinner. I did not feel like sushi so I tried one of the fried rice dishes and was only able to down about half of. It tasted wonderful, but there was so much. I loved this because I was able to take the rest home and have a wonder leftover lunch the next day. The staff was very friendly and attractive. Ha! Not that staff needs to be attractive all the time, but in Anchorage it is a nice little perk. The atmosphere is very upscale for the city too. To me the restaurant was more suited to dining after dark, but with a baby that can be a little tough! There were a couple of decent beers on tap which made my meal all that much tastier. Looking forward to hitting Dish again real soon.

I went to this place twice within a week. So far I've had the sashimi, baked salmon roll, and poki stack. I was pretty disappointed on my second trip. The sashimi was pretty good, but I liked the cut the first time better. The baked salmon roll was good, but not great. I'd pass on the poki stack though. Overall, this place is decent, but next time, I'm probably going to check out Samurai Sushi. As others have stated, the decor is nice at Dish, and the prices are moderate to high.

The sushi I had was questionable. They don't use quality fish - for instance my tuna was a brownish color and fatty. I stuck to the tempura udon, which was absolutely delish. The tempura was a little soggy, but not so that it wasn't eatable, and I tend to dunk it in the soup. I think they use MSG, because I'm allergic and my knuckles swelled the next day (or it was the turkey sandwich I had for lunch earlier that day). The decor is light and trendy, I can see why so many kids hang out here. It's got a very "be seen" feel to it. Service is slow and it appears that maybe the owner hired his kids to work the place, who in-turn hired his friends to help him - there was a lot of attention being paid to each other, but not really the customers. The customers here seem to think that rolls are sushi and you could tell that sashimi was in nobody's vocabulary. If you really do enjoy sushi, this isn't the place for you, but if you want to have a drink over appetizers and hang out for a while, totally it.

I see not a lot has changed. "Why the hell did you go back if you didn't like it?" Well, friend, it was a going away party and there was no say in the matter. Plus, y'know, it wouldn't hurt to give it a second chance. -------- Go here if you have no plans for the rest of the evening with lots of time to spare, as it still takes more than an hour to get your order. Perhaps my previous review was a little harsh - but it was written the same evening I went and was a "frustrating experience" to say the least. Needless to say, it's still overrated. It's just that when you walk into this place the experience focuses more on presentation and a trendy atmosphere over the service, which is lacking immensely(useless in a way that's equivalent to those people who do nothing but stand around at A&F stores.) It feels like that "hip new MTV show that only aired it's pilot episode before getting canceled because there was no substance" of Japanese cuisine. Dish is more concerned about the facade/image of having a hip urban hangout with all the fame and street cred, rather than having an actual functioning efficient restaurant that satisfies customers who are there for food and not clubbin'. I would categorize large portion of the sushi menu as "fusion" rather than sushi(come to think of it, a lot of sushi places around town would be more "fusion." How can I put this - it's kinda like going to Chipotle or Qdoba or any of those other faux-mexican joints(but hey, at least Chipotle has Carnitas.) I digress. Dish, among many other competitors are more of a safety net for those who aren't quite comfortable with going the full step for sushi. These "fusion" dishes are interesting, but it's questionable whether one would call this sushi. It's places like this that make you wonder when a restaurant that is representative of traditional, home-made Japanese dishes that breaks out of the mold of what we perceive to define Japanese food emerges. But at least they fixed the arrangement of the dining area to something more "logical," minus the chinese gong at the entrance(why not a taiko drum? who knows.) In the mean time, I'll be heading over to Peter's or Samurai. P.S. The commercial is a train wreck. If the goal of the jingle was to discourage prospective clientele, it succeeded. Only time will tell if I receive another angry email from an unusually well-informed user defending the restaurant as if it were a personal attack. Almost...as if they were an affiliated relative of said business, trolling yelp and urbanspoon as quite a few places do, flagging less-than spectacular posts for removal and encouraging employees to post positive feedback. Ah well, it's merely an exaggerated analysis. *wink wink*

I've been going to this place for the past few years, and I think, for at least the past 3 owners and every time the place changes hands it seems to get a bit better. With the latest owners bringing in a nice modern feel to the location. Good food whether you get a dinner, sushi or sashimi. The wait staff is always very friendly and the fish seems to be as fresh as we're going to get up here in the AK. My one concern is that the prices seem to rise with every new owner. Overall a nice modern feel with that "come as you are" feel that Alaska has.

Give the Hawaiian and Spider rolls a try. Ummm ummm son. Place has a nice look and the sushi is some of the best you can get in Anchorage. Service is sometimes off but the food makes up for it.

Ok, so my husband and I while living there have gone to just about every sushi place in anchorage. I have to say this.. Dish use to be our favorite. Until the service went to crap. We would always brag about how good it was and thentale big parties there and we would get put in those rooms and never saw our server. This wasn't a one time deal. Then we find out they added 20% gratuity instead of 18% like the menu says. They wouldn't fix it. Said the computer had a glitch. I am sorry that is not professional at all. The owner has never been nice. She just glares all the time. Any time I would get sake with my husband the server would check our ID's (yes I am of age) and then not much later the owner/manager would come and snappy as hell just check mine again. She just isn't nice. The food is good though more expensive than samurai and they are actually so sweet there so it was never worth the drive to go over there. But if you are in town I think it's worth checking out the restaurant is put together very well!

I am a sushi snob. I admit it. I am a Sake snob, and I am not ashamed. Dish has both...and they are pretty damn good, not great, but good. The atmosphere is fantastic, although it does seem to be trying a bit too hard. I ordered both the Chanel Number 5 Roll ( which is officially my favorite roll in Alaska) and the sesame chicken ( yes, I eat a lot.) I enjoyed both. I could have done without miso soup appetizer, but, the ginger salad was a great pallete cleanser pre sushi. I had the plum Sake...and I am pretty sure I am a borderline addict now. It was freakin fantastic! The waitstaff are great...very young, but efficient and frienly none the less. There were enough hipsters for me to take notice, but not so many that I wanted to throw my chopsticks at anyone. Go take a visit, order the Chanel Number 5 Roll, have a few glasses of Plum Sake and realize that life is pretty damn good.

We had great service from our waitress but the manager needs a lesson or two in customer service. You don't blame a customer and call them a liar for pulling a huge hair from their sushi roll and then refuse to remove it from the bill. It's not the customer's fault that they happened to get through a little more than half the sushi roll BEFORE THEY CAME ACROSS THE HAIR!!! I've gotten better service from take-out people.

I agree with much of what Jenny L. wrote. I don't know if it's because I'm a sushi snob or because I lived in Japan and know what sushi is supposed to look/taste like. Whatever the case, Dish is definately NOT my cuppa o-cha. I am a sushi traditionalist. I like rice, fish, perhaps a little nori, and a big smear of wasabi. That's it. No more, no less. So it goes without saying that when a meal contains one, two, or three of those ingredients, said ingredients had better be flawless. The sushi, like Jenny L. said, was served warm. No, no, no. The rice also wasn't right...I couldn't figure out why. But perfect rice is essential (I can't get it right at home, that's why I go out for sushi) and Dish's rice wasn't quite right. Not a deal breaker, but there's room for improvement. Also, the nori on the tekka maki was seriously chewy, the result of being too hydrated. I wonder if the tekka maki had been sitting for awhile before being served, since it was warm and the nori had absorbed too much moisture. We also had a few orders of inventive rolls (huge list, very creative stuff). I don't like big, crunchy rolls with dribbles of pink sauce that you have to fight to fit in your mouth, so this culinary experience is lost on me. So, they were o.k. to eat, neat to look at it, etc. but kind of all tasted the same. Dish is the kind of place where it would behoove you to order something with deep fried veg or shellfish, instead of raw. The waitstaff was friendly and young and remarkably efficient. I never noticed them after my food arrived. But, my water was always refilled and empty dishes were removed. I'd say that's the mark of a great waitperson. Points for that. I don't think I'll be back, however. There are plenty of other sushi places in town that "Dish" it up right.

Tried this place recently while visiting Anchorage & loved it! Went here for lunch with the husband & he ordered a delicious bento box while I got a sashimi plate + a roll. All the sushi was really fresh & my simple tempura roll was delicious & a bit spicy. The tea & service was great & the price was pretty good for all the food we got. I'll definitely be back here again next time I'm in the "city"!! ;)

To be honest, I was expecting more from Dish. I've travelled around the world, overseas and domestic, always trying new Sushi restaurants and Dish was far from the top. After reading the reviews of people who "knew what good Sushi is," my wife and I should have went elsewhere. Although, the experience was never short from par. First of all, their take of Japanese salad didn't go well with us, due to the fact that the dressing wasn't the standard ginger dressing, but some sort of dressing with a heavy hint of orange. Their Miso soup, below average. I ordered Sushi and Sashimi. The sushi was good and the sashimi was fresh, so couldn't complain. My wife ordered 2 different types of rolls and with the prices that they were, we were expecting it to be some of the best we've ever eaten. However, it was far from that. Finally, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was contemporary. Although, it could go without the grand piano in the middle of the restaurant. P.S. One good thing my wife would like to mention is that the tempura covered oreo's they serve with the check were amazing.

3rd time here. Celebrating a birthday. Was in a private room w 12 guests. Service was OK. I eaten many sushi places all over anchorage and the lower 48 and I give thus place a 2 star because the rolls were the smallest I have ever seen! I ordered the Dream roll and GF ordered the volcanoe roll, both look so small that I thought I was eating some Fred Meyer sushi. The roll was falling apart as u try to pick it up. $15 for my sushi. The atmosphere was good tho. Only reason I would go there. I wouldnt go back. On a side note their tempura Oreo cookie dessert was delicious. Look else where if u want good sushi. Nothing special about this place.

I always loved going to The Dish. The prices are a little high but I always enjoyed their food. I love going with a group of friends and ordering a bottle of Lychee sake. The environment is designed nicely. The restaurant is usually packed on weekends or special holidays.

First time i went the service was good. Sushi was ehhh, hated the salad, and the miso was kinda bland. Second time.. i heard the place was good for parties so bunch of friends came out to eat.... food was again.. ehhh... the thing that really got to me was the service. The waitress was horrible. We'd ask for something and she'd look right at us and walk away without acknowledging us or ever bringing us what we asked for. there are a few times where we would say "excuse me?" and she would look at us then walk off very fast. maybe it was because she knew she was gonna get a tip either way (added on for parties), but still no excuse. We all would have tipped her more but her service was horrible. Then the menu said they add on, i think it was, 15% for tip? but our check had more than that added on. THey told us it was their computer system and they can't take it off. we had to pay the waitress even more. on the plus side the atmosphere is nice and their sake is yummy.

I eat at Dish on a weekly basis, and it is THE BEST place I have ever been to. They have the most extensive selection of rolls in town and they are all creative and delicious. The environment is very relaxed and chill, I love to go after work and choose from their many variations of hot or cold sake. Last time I was there, my server told me they will be opening their bar within the next week or so, and they will be serving custom sake cocktails! I can't wait!! Sometimes they are so busy you have to wait for a table, but it is well worth the wait. The pricing is moderate, but you get a lot of food for your dollar, and all meals come with a good sized soup and salad (with their home-made house dressing), and oreo tempura for desert with dinner. And the atmosphere is so nice and contemporary that I don't mind spending a couple extra dollars. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody who loves sushi... or even someone looking to try it for the first time!

Every time my husband and I go here the food is better and better. We try different types of sushi each time. We simply tell our server to surprise us and we have never been disappointed with what they bring. I leave there so full I can hardly breath! The aptmosphere is great, we're relaxed and happy each time were in there. I've been a sushi eater for 15 years and have been to a lot of sushi places in Anchorage & outside and this is by far the best place I have ever been.

I have been here twice now. The first time was about a year or so ago, and I wasn't incredibly impressed. I'm not a huge Asian food eater and definitely not a sushi kind of guy. I ordered some generic Asian dish that I knew I'd had before that I was confident I could stomach. On that visit alone Id have given Dish three stars. Not terrible, not great... Now, on the second visit it's a whole different story. Like I said, I am not a big sushi guy. I've had it maybe 5 or 6 times in my life, and never really cared for it. Apparently I have never had decent sushi until this point in my life. We ordered the sushi and sashimi platter to split between two of us. It was a platter of a few rolls, nigiri and sashimi of the chef's choice. And it was amazing... As far as I could tell, we received tuna, fatty tuna, red snapper, and prawns. I couldn't tell what the roll we received was, but it was definitely tasty and well made. Our server was very friendly and well timed with everything. We sat at the sushi bar; the sushi chef was friendly and even gave us a complementary salmon cheek while we were waiting for our meal. We both ordered saki based cocktails that were well made and tasted great. Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal and I will definitely be trying Dish again next time I am looking to go out for sushi. If they pull of another meal on the same lines as this one I will most likely move them up to a 5 star rating...

wasnt going to review but decided i would. i tried to make a pickup order 20 minutes before they closed and they said it was too late. too late?! i couldnt believe it! the fkn restaurant wasnt even closed and they told me they wouldnt make my order. arent restaurants in business to make money? take my money!! you closed off business too early. i dont know if the owner reads these reviews but if you say youre open till 10, serve food till fkn 10. its not like i wanted to sit there and eat and keeping your people there past hours, i planned on taking it home.

We came here for lunch with a few friends on a Saturday afternoon. The food here is really good and comes out pretty quick! The staff is nice and professional and they have pretty big portions! They also have a nice atmosphere, but I find that to be the case with most sushi restaurants in town. Honestly, it's getting hard for me to pick out the top sushi joints. A few bad ones stick out (dami and yamaya). I would come back, I think their portions are bigger than some of the other spots. Their food and service and ambiance are all great!!

I'm not sure how I feel about this place after one visit, however I'm still not sure if I want to go back and give it a second chance. It gives off a kind of rich, classy, you expect it to be mind blowing good feel, but I just thought it was okay and pretty pricey for what you get (at least for lunch anyways). I went in for lunch with a coworker. You walk in and see a really nice restaurant with white table cloths and nice place settings, then the casual dressed/mannerisms of the server throw you off your game a bit. They say they have lunch specials, but they weren't priced any different from their normal menu. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box. They start out by giving you a small salad and miso soup, very standard, nothing good or bad to say about it. The bento box comes with a couple pieces of shrimp & veggie tempura, which again pretty standard/nothing special and as to be expected, also comes with two pieces of gyoza, which I think was decently done and had some good flavor, and also comes with a california roll. This is already my least favorite roll, but I ordered the bento box because it gave me a chance to try a variety of things for lunch. The roll was just standard and did lack flavor, but again I'm not generally a fan of california rolls. The chicken teriyaki however, was the saving grace of my bento box, it was pretty well done, chicken was a little on the chewy side, but the flavor was exactly what I was hoping for.

First, I'm not a sushi connoisseur as I don't know a lot about fish, and I have only eaten at 10 or 12 sushi places in my life. Second, I don't know that I have ever had five-star sushi or what it would be like. My ratings are from my guts, and my guts give Dish a four. In fact, the sushi places I go to and enjoy the most are all fours. So maybe four is my five for sushi? The food is really great. They have the standard array of sushi choices, my favorite Nigiri being Unagi (eel), which is easy to overdo and make mushy, and which can sometimes have a weird sauce--but theirs is nice, slightly smoky, a good compliment. My other Nigiri standards are Sake (salmon), and Maguro (tuna), both of which are always tender and tasty, melting on the tongue like I think raw fish should. They also always taste fresh and are served at the appropriate temperature. I don't like cold sushi because it kills the flavor. My favorite basic rolls are Tekka Maki and Kappa Maki (tuna and cucumber, respectively). I have eaten a couple of their special rolls now, and I prefer the crunch and the boyfriend for a good mix of ingredients and because they aren't too heavy on the mayo. Their rolls in general are well-made: they don't fall apart, but they aren't chewy either. It all just floats in the mouth in a fresh, yummy way. We have always had great service here, whether at a table or the sushi bar. Servers are nice, professional, prompt. Normally, I don't care about the atmosphere for sushi--I want good food. But this place is a funky, hip atmosphere that isn't too formal but can be fun for a dress up/go out kind of night. The music isn't overwhelming but not generic pop. I like that they serve unique cocktails in addition to some basic wine choices because I am not a beer or sake drinker, so I often just drink water with sushi. At Dish, I can enjoy drinking and eating. This is becoming a regular place for me. As for the damn song, I wouldn't have known to check the place out without it, but I can't stand it for the ear-worm quality (a problem my husband adds to by singing it whenever we talk about the place).

My favorite sushi in Anchorage! The tempura fried ice cream is a great dessert. Love the sake bar. Order a sake flight, describe what you like and try some new ones. I always get the deadliest catch roll with the mango pieces. So yummy!

I've been to dish multiple times due to convenient location and the 'hip' atmosphere of this place and have liked them quite a bit however it's a little different these days. As a consumer/customer it feels like they've started charging everything extra since they've really got their name out. A big group of us (about 8 people) went to dish and the waitress offered hot tea and edamame to which some of us said yes to only to find out later that each of those things were like 3 dollars extra, each of them. It was never like this when they were starting off. I know that 3 dollars is not huge amount of money but it adds up and was annoying especially when you weren't expecting it. And especially because they didn't used to charge for those things! Service wise is always hit or miss. I don't know if they have high turn over rate but some servers just aren't very helpful. I hate to be that person who asks to speak with "the manager" but what can u do when the server u have answers every question with maybe, I'm not sure, let me check (and never follows up). Food however is delicious. But if i have to leave the restaurant with a sour taste in my mouth due to multiple things mentioned above, no thank you. My friends and I'll just hang ay moose's tooth right behind dish.

I wasn't wild about Dish. A coworker wanted to try something different, and I gave in. I had a roll, and it came with miso soup and a green salad. Typical for most of the sushi spots in town. However, edamame was not included which annoyed me a little. The food was just okay. What really made this more annoying was the constant helicopter service. I swear my water glass never got a half inch below the rim before it was filled to meniscus level again. As soon as I was done with my soup, salad, and sushi, the plates were whisked away. I did not like this. Additionally, it was super cold in here. Now, I know you gotta keep the sushi cold, but not the customers. Won't be back.

I went here with a large group, 10 people or so. We had a reservation and let them know before we ordered that we would all be on separate checks. Dinner was fun a little slow but we didn't mind. But our experience went TOTALLY south when they tried to bill us. First off they came back and started asking everybody what they got cause they hadn't been keeping track, they then came back with a large receipt with 8 checks on it and told us to find ours and pay accordingly. They took almost an HOUR just to charge us. Once we finally all got our bills back we started realizing that they had charged almost everybody wrong. We sorted it out which took another 30 minutes but we were patient with them. We left they told us have a good night half our party had driven off and then someone comes out telling me we still owe them 200 dollars, um excuse me? We have all been charged we have our receipts and we are already LEAVING and you tell us we owe you more. No. If they couldn't figure out our bills in the hour it took them and charged us wrong that's on you buddy. Then I decided to check my bank account, my bill was over a hundred dollars and I wanted to be sure they charged me correctly. They did not. They ILLEGALLY CHARGED MY CARD 250 DOLLARS AFTER I LEFT THE RESTURANT. I did NOT authorize the TWO additional transactions they put through on my card. I will NEVER go here again. The food was mediocre and the service was down right awful. And I fully plan on filing a dispute claim against them for fraud. GO FUCK YOURSELF DISH.

I had the Dragon Roll for $16. Service was quick and friendly. A nice facility with great music, which made for a great atmosphere. Altogether we had 4 rolls, 4 drinks and two tempura Green Tea ice cream. The total came to $100. Be prepared to spend a little more here. We had a great dinner, so if you decide to come to Dish, make it a special occasion.

Initially, I hated this place. However, I have come to terms that alaska just doesn't have delicious sushi with creative sushi chefs, like back in California. So I gave this place another shot. I played it safe and just ordered their sushi & sashimi dinner. It was not bad. Fish was fresh and the California roll that came with it was okay too. We sat at the sake bar and received great service from the bartender. Had some sake, wine and beer. It was a great date night spot. The first time I came here I had the salmon poke which was no bueno. It had way too much sauce coated on it, the flavor was just off and the presentation was super mushy looking. My fiancé had their udon and complained that it was way to salty on our first visit as well. Dish has somewhat redeemed themselves for now. It has a great atmosphere for hanging out, grabbing a drink while eating some sushi.

Came here when they 1st open it was great very impressed with service and quality. It's been a few years and it's slowly gone down hill, but the cost has gone way up. Some fine examples of this are Beef broth for chx soup or any other soups. Not listing mushrooms in the soup on the menu. Kinda sucks because you get 5 pounds of them. $3 for a side of rice. $10 + for 99.9% of the rolls $12 for 6 wings that came from a freezer bag from Costco then covered in sauce. You charge over $5 for a cucumber roll. Ice with your 3 ounces of water and no straws to get to that water. Refills are ice to the top then beverage. When football is on your service is almost as good as being helped by a 3 year old. The difference is you think it's cute when it's a kid and it's frustrating when it's not. We had been asked multiple times if we are ok... This was nice but not noticing that we had to pull out all of the mushrooms and not noticing we are out of water is kinda frustrating. I have been to some cheap and some expensive sushi places. They have goods and bad things about them. I feel Dish started with all the right intentions then lost its way and has tried to fix it with added cost on good. I understand that you want to serve great food but cost is huge and only offering $10+ rolls makes people rethink what sushi place to frequent. I personally like to order 2 to 3 rolls. That's well over 40 bucks that's just me. Your food cost are not that high. I don't feel that the complementary Oreos are truly free, you have already payed for them in the high cost of the food. I found out why the prices are so high its the last hour of being open you have had less than 5 tables but you have 4 cooks that say goodbye and 7 servers and a host and a manager. I am pretty sure you had more staff than customers for over an hour. Send someone home or make them work on getting ice or cleaning off the tables they all had been at the host stand and all said goodbye before we walked out after waiting 20 mins for our check. Dish I am sorry but it will take a lot to ever get me to come back.

Prices were very steep - even for lunch. I come from a land of delicious and affordable sushi (New Orleans - go to origami in the university area-YUM) and this is the first place I was steered towards for sashimi. I had the sashimi lunch one day. Very tasty - but expensive compared to what I'm used to. A few days later, my dad and I came back with a big group for dinner and made reservations for 10. They sat us in a private room and gave everyone complimentary miso, salad and fried Oreo dessert. I had the raw fish over rice dinner and added a hand roll. Everything was really good - but again really expensive. You get what you pay for and I will return to dish, but it looks like I'm gonna have to tame my sushi habit. Anchorage is expensive! Very disappointed. I hadn't eaten at "Dish" for over a year and recommended it for a date. Although the decor is up beat and modern the food was lacking flavor. We choose the Ace's sushi role which was bland and all the flavors blended together. The Soy 1 roll also lacked definition of flavors but was slightly better than the Ace's roll. The house special "2015" was the best of the 3 rolls/barely, without the topping the roll would also contain no definition of taste. When asked how we liked our meal (the Ace's roll we could not finish, yuck!!) my date gave an honest opinion of the bland meal. The manager came and apologized and gave us a discount, our waiter seem to take offense and argued with us, defending the poor meal (poor customer service) . We won't be back. This restaurant has probably the best sushi in town. The service was quick, friendly, and absolutely pain free. I enjoyed my time here, they treated me like king and also at times offered free food to try out at the sushi bar. I will return.

The true test of any good sushi restaurant is the unadulterated piece of raw fish and rice, not a roll. In this test, Dish failed miserably. My pieces of sushi were completely tasteless and my salmon skin handroll was so fishy tasting I could barely swallow it. The fact that animals gave their lives to be made into this sushi made me weep. If for some (crazy) reason you are hell bent on going to this restaurant, than definitely go with one of their 50 or so different rolls that are so covered in sticky sweet sauce that (or so that) you can't even taste the fish. If this is the best sushi restaurant in Anchorage, and you live there, I implore you to only eat sushi when you travel. If you're visiting Alaska, as I was, wait til you get home.

Visited this place with my sister, and I wasn't super in love with it. Pretty spacious, decently decorated, and when we went it was pretty filled with people. I got the crunch roll while my sister got the lobster roll, which we shared. To me, both sushi's didn't taste that much different from any other sushi place I've been to, so there wasn't a "WOW" reaction to the dish-but it satisfied my sushi craving. And I have to say with a warm heart how much I love that they had thai ice tea (my guilty pleasure). Oh and they gave us complimentary fried oreos for dessert, how nice!

Very mediocre overall. The ambience was nice, even for lunch, though the sunny windows were way too hot and bright and the tables were ridiculously large for just two people (they could easily sit nine). I guess it's better than sitting next to the bathroom and not having enough space. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and well dressed, though I think most Asian restaurants assume you know what you're getting. That's a big assumption, especially in Alaska. Right off the bat I ordered fresh rolls and asked if they had plum tea (they did not). The fresh rolls were definitely not the best I have had. The wrappers were thick, there was a strange fishy taste to them that I was not used to and the sauce was cloying and lacked spice. I perused the ample menu, which did not include the standard tekka or nigiri inserts. Most of their rolls (2 oversized pages) sounded incredibly repetitive and there is far too much use of avocado and cream cheese. I instead ordered ika nigiri, which was tougher and less flavorful than I was used to, and the sashimi lunch (12 pieces of chef's choice). I really wish when they presented the chef's choice they would tell you what fish you are eating (especially if they don't have those little photo placards on the table) so that perhaps you could come back and order it as nigiri (and make them more money). Nevertheless it was nicely prepared and presented. The fish was fresh and tasted wonderful, though it could have been colder. There was ample wasabi and ginger as well. Lunch was served with miso, which was standard fare, a bowl of steamed rice, and a small salad, which had way too much citrus in the watery dressing. I was intrigued by many of their cocktails, though there wasn't enough information about the sake. I also did not see any sparkling sakes on the menu so I passed. More than three times one of the busboys came over to clear our table and each time he addressed us as if he hadn't before, even though we were the only ones left in the restaurant for a late lunch. At one point (since our waiter had never returned) I asked him if one of the fish on the sashimi plate was swordfish (my best uneducated guess). He apologized for being new and not knowing the menu. The bill was presented without a fortune cookie or even a mint.

Heard about this place on the radio and have seen commercials in the past. Looked interesting to me so I gave it a try. I went with my friend and her son. Ordered a drink, had guava and saki or something like that in it. Wasn't that bad. I order two different rolls and my friend ordered calamari and something for her son. Our server was kind. When the food came, the presentation was okay, not the best. As we tried our dishes, The taste of the sushi wasn't good & the prices are ridiculous! Definitely, will not recommend this place to my friends or family. I feel like there are better sushi spots in town than the dish.

I have been frequenting Dish for a few years now. And I have watched the service go downhill over those few years. Now I have worked for a hospitality industry business myself so I have a base level expectation for most places. I understand mistakes can be made and orders can go out wrong. But the base level expectation is for the restaurant to admit the mistake and make it right. This is where my problem lies with Dish. The story starts with some bad tuna. It was clear to anyone who has tried sushi before that the tuna the sushi chefs used on my fiancee's roll was poor. Half of the roll had fresh, deep-red looking tuna on it. However the other half looked colorless, and like it should have been used to make spicy tuna. When paying a premium for a small amount of food it is perfectly acceptable to expect quality. Dish seemed to disagree. We sent the roll back with the minor request to use better tuna, as it was clear that one side was fresh and the other side was old. We just wanted to replace the old tuna with fresh tuna. Instead of admitting their use of old tuna they came back to us saying even if they were to remake the roll (not what we wanted them to do) it would look the exact same, because that was the "only tuna they had". They made the claim that this tuna was cut closer to the skin and that was the reason for the appearance (not true by the way). We were then informed to order another roll if we didn't like it. The waitress was relaying the information from the sushi chef, she was extremely unknowledgeable when asked any followup questions so we requested to chat with a manager. The manager came out, we explained everything again, and she basically said the same thing. Just as a disclaimer: we have no problem paying for something that's correct, even if it had to get fixed. But we didn't feel comfortable having to pay for a low quality item that Dish refused to correct. The manager was more interested in proving her point about the tuna! Even after taking the item off the bill. As if somehow we offended her personally because we were served bad fish and had the audacity to ask for something better that would justify the $17 price tag. During this unnecessary argument session from her, she sarcastically let us know that we were actually getting BETTER quality more expensive fish because we were being served Toro (tuna belly/fatty tuna). This was again untrue because all Toro I have seen and eaten has had some sort of marbling and a distinguishable color, they stuff they served us simply looked and tasted like old tuna. She even wanted to bring their tuna invoice out to prove her point. Now before this altercation, I probably would have rated dish a sold 3. They are usually consistently mediocre, with the service being below average. But this instance made me realize that this place is an absolute joke to be named "Best Sushi in Anchorage". Why in the world would a manager of a hospitality service business want to argue with their customers? If she would have simply apologized and was cordial about it, I would have probably kept my opinions to myself because there is no need to write a review of a mediocre place.

I have always loved this place! I've been gone for a year & just got back to Alaska. My girlfriends wanna meet up... We head straight to the Dish their sushi is delicious, fresh and always presented beautifully! My favorite drink is the Sakerita, very refreshing. The staff/service the best and the restaurant decor is phenomenal! Prices are very reasonable.I definitely recommend this place to any and everyone.

I took my wife for dinner at the Dish, I was worry that since there was only 40 min. till closing. The server gave us one of the best services I've seen in Anchorage. When we asked what the difference was on the size of their Japanese Beer, she actually took the time to bring out the bottles to show us. Often check to see if we needed anything else, and to top it off she gave us a complementary deep fried Oreo's, that where fantastic. The sushi was good, rice a bit falling apart, maybe cause it was the last batch of rice, but the service made up. We will diffidently be back!

This place is good, but I've had a lot of sushi in my lifetime which i can't really get out of my head/palette. The service was very friendly and food was pretty good, but you really can't compare to the sushi in Hawaii (or Japan). On a side note: Quite a few Anchorage locals love this place, so I think it's one of the best places in downtown Anchorage to get sushi. They had the classic types of nigiri sushi and a whole menu of very creative (some oddly unusual) sushi rolls. Many of them are fried with a whole bunch of various ingredients inside. They get 5 stars for creativity! The calamari was delicious and I had the philly roll and spicy tuna rolls and they were fresh and presented beautifully. Kinda pricey ($12-$15) for the rolls, but it is a pretty trendy place. I'd definitely go back, but it's not on the top of my list for sushi places.

I've been here a few times and while I enjoy the interior and service the food has never struck me as great. The rolls were very small and poorly made, the gyouza was greasy and soggy, and the sashimi itself was just okay. I like the interior a lot, it's very well done and contemporary. First off it was way too cold in that restaurant. Next my food(beef teriyaki w/shrimp tempura) was poorly cooked. Tempura was soggy and beef tasted like a frozen mess from the freezer. My wife's hand rolls were ok, she loves her sushi and wasn't impressed. We were so turned off by this place that we turned down free dessert by the server, which is a first for me. Lastly we told the server we wanted nothing else and she proceeded to make us sit there for 15 minutes before my wife had to tell the server we were in fact done to get our check. I've been eating here for about four years. I've really never been disappointed, but I'm not a big sushi freak. Everyone else in the family knows what they like, and no matter how different it may sound, they always are happy with their selection. So, for sushi lovers, this place is tops. Nice drink selection as well, but the nice thing about the place is the variety of non sushi dinners. I like rolls, and those are good too, but they offer tempura, bento boxes, Chinese and Korean specialities as well. So while the sushi freaks are more than satisfied, so am I. Check out the menu online, it's all good.

I have had consistently good sushi here. I have done a lot of take out from here, so I'm not too sure about the dine-in experience lately as I haven't dined in for about a year. The last time I went the service was slow and it was on the expensive side, but the food was really great. The atmosphere is also pretty great; the place is very modern and fun. I would give it 3.5 stars for my last dine-in experience. If you are getting take-out the food earns a solid 4.5 stars on its own merit. The food here is good. The tempura Oreos are a nice little end treat. I'm not opposed to coming here, but it is really expensive for what it's worth. I will opt to go to other sushi places, unless a friend suggests coming here. It really irks me when sushi joints jack up the price because they have a nice-looking menu using the Papyrus font and funnel a ton of money into decorating the place, and the customer ends up having to pay for that expense. Dish is very pretty to look at, with artsy partitions between tables, fancy bench-style tables, a baby grand, and an elevated sake bar. But I would much rather eat cheaper at a place that wasn't as posh in appearance. Another annoyance are "sake-tinis." You're paying the price of a martini or margarita, with not nearly as much alcohol or flavor as a real one. Mixing 2 ounces of sake with some flavored juices and charging $8-10 is simply a rip-off. Especially if that mixer contains Gekkeikan, which is probably the cheapest sake you can buy for about $8 at Brown Jug. Also, it seems to take forever to even get an order in. Maybe I have come to Dish every time they've been exceptionally busy. The hosts and servers are nice, for the most part, don't get me wrong. But once I sit down, I have an idea of what I'm gonna order, and it's annoying to wait 10 minutes before the server (who usually ducks away, avoiding eye contact, while hurrying around and delivering other people's food) acknowledges me. It's not a bad place. It's just not that great. The food is consistently good, but the other things I mentioned detract from its overall value.

Sitting at the sushi bar waiting for two rolls equals 45 min wait. Waitress apologizes twenty minutes after the order and twenty minutes later still nothing. All the while four "chefs" stand laughing behind the bar making sushi at the rate of one order every five minutes between the group. Sushi was pretty weak, edible, but on par with supermarket sushi.

I ordered the Mongolian beef, it was so good, moist and plenty for 2. We sat at the saki bar and the bartender was nice and very attentive to our needs. It was pretty crowded and the ambiance was nice... we can't wait to go back!

Now I have recently gotten back from Japan so I have somewhat of a bias. we started with seafood Yakitori- it really was a sad looking dish (nothing but the overcooked seafood and green onion between.). The tempura was soggy, which seems the norm if not set on a rack to drain the oil. The sashimi & sushi lunch was pretty standard, however, didn't come with rice. I won't be revisiting this establishment. On a lighter note- a very nice looking decor and attractive waitress' as state elsewhere.

I absolutely love sushi, and so I make a point of eating sushi (frequently) wherever I live or travel. The Dish has a great atmosphere, but I cannot say the same about the sushi. It's not that the sushi is bad, it's just that the sushi isn't good. I like my sushi to have a lot of flavor and "kick" to it, and all the rolls I have tried (about 6 total) have tasted pretty much the same - bland. I will probably eat here again because it is close to my office, but it wont be very often. For those folks who enjoy a milder taste in sushi, you will probably like The Dish. For those who prefer sushi with a strong flavor and want to actually taste the difference in your rolls, I recommend another sushi bar.

Apparently the mongolian beef was still good the next morning and is the "perfect hangover food". The sushi was great! We had no problems and we can't wait to go back. However, I must say, MAKE RESERVATIONS! It's a busy place and you WILL wait otherwise in their tiny waiting room. Also, if you want Sake, drink it at home....we paid $29 for a bottle and found the SAME one at the liquor store for $12! YIKES!

I admittedly don't know what "real sushi" is supposed to taste like having never been to Japan, but I think Dish is pretty A-ok anyway. I usually get the chicken bento (comes with a little bit of everything) and for the $12 or $13 is costs, I am full on miso, salad and a huge spread of rolls, chicken and potstickers. Totally worth it for lunch - though I have never been there for dinner, I hear the menu is the same but a bit pricier.... The atmosphere is great - I can't help but stare at the distressed glass room dividers and think "how did they do that?" My husband and I usually sit at the sushi bar and the guys working always make us feel very welcome without breathing down our necks or making it uncomfortable. Need a sweet treat on the way out the door? Grab a mini chocolate bar from the large bowl - it's worth it too.

Sorry to say we (four adults and a child) had a uniformly bad experience here. Our food took almost an hour to arrive with no explanation, and two of four orders were wrong or incomplete. Our waitress was inattentive, dismissive and unapologetic. Then the restauarant tried to charge us for the dishes served in error even though they took them back.

I may be the only person who doesn't like this place in Anchorage- there could be several explanations for this: 1. Other people I talk to about The Dish don't really know what good sushi is. 2. They only care about atmosphere (which, I have to admit is amazing) 3. I am a sushi snob. I ordered the crunch roll with 6 pieces of sushi lunch special. Crunch roll- pretty good, also pretty hard to mess up. However I had serious issue with my sushi. One of my favorites is yellow tail tuna or hamachi. I know it was supposed to be hamachi because my boss ordered a pair- and it looked just like mine. You know what it looked like? Not the beautiful yellowish pink fish I am used to, but grey. I wanted to vomit. The second I saw it I knew either the sushi chef has no idea what hamachi is and gave is the wrong thing- or their hamachi is NO GOOD! Basically, I refuse to eat RAW fish that looks like a piece of slate and is served of the the warmer side of room temperature. It is going to take some serious nagging to get me to walk back into that restaurant. I should be giving it one star. Aside from my fish looking down right inedible, the server didn't bring me water until I begged for it and also forgot to bring me napkins and chopsticks. She passed it off and giggled saying, "these tables are usually set for 4". Ya well count and when you realize there is more than 4 bring extra essentials like water and utensils. Speaking of water- of of the other diners I was with pointed out the "floaties" in the water. For me, bad day to go hungover, chugging water. If the water isn't good at a restaurant, what makes you think anything else is going to be good!? And, one more gripe that may sound slightly racist, and probably is. I am used to hole in the wall sushi restaurants that are family owned by Japanese or Korean immigrants. I am used to fast talk, fast service and language barriers- however almost always trust to just ask to be served whatever is good that day. I would NOT try that at The Dish. All the waitresses were 16 years old cheerleaders.

To a large extent, I have to agree with most of what the more lower ratings people have given Dish. With that being said, I'll throw in my two cents. This is not a Sushi bar. If you define Sushi as prepared dishes that are commonly called sushi, then sure, you've got yourself a Sushi bar. What this really is, is a fusion type restaurant. I'll admit, the decor is nice as well as the atmosphere. However, when I see Sushi, I like others, am a snob. If I'm paying large prices for small dishes I expect quality and taste. Most of my sushi rolls were covered with a pepper or hot sauce of some sort. I had to wonder what I was really eating when it's being masked like this. This masking of flavors hides the very taste of the expensive fish I committed to buy. Think of it as buying USDA Prime steak and then having someone burn it to a crisp and serve it to you - Bon Appetite! Also, my nigiri and sashimi was not fresh. It tasted like frozen fish to me. Again, insulting me with the lure of a real sushi bar and serving me fish from Costco or Fred Meyer. For their prices, I expect their sous chef to be down at whatever fish market picking up the best fish he can. Outside of the sushi, their others dishes seemed to be fine, some quite good. Sushi is the highlight for me and this was a burned out lightbulb. Find another sushi place if you are really into sushi, there are better ones.

The atmosphere is trendy, the employees are friendly and helpful (especially if you're new to the sushi world, like me) Great prices! Try their crunch rolls... MMM! And they have a nice banquet room for large groups.

I have been to The Dish a few times for lunch, and I have yet to be disappointed. The prices are fair, comparatively speaking. The selection seems abundant. I'm not a sushi aficionado, sorry. The place is usually crowded, so that's a good sign, isn't it? Give it a try!

I was pleasantly surprised by this place after my fiance brought me there for dinner. I did not feel like sushi so I tried one of the fried rice dishes and was only able to down about half of. It tasted wonderful, but there was so much. I loved this because I was able to take the rest home and have a wonder leftover lunch the next day. The staff was very friendly and attractive. Ha! Not that staff needs to be attractive all the time, but in Anchorage it is a nice little perk. The atmosphere is very upscale for the city too. To me the restaurant was more suited to dining after dark, but with a baby that can be a little tough! There were a couple of decent beers on tap which made my meal all that much tastier. Looking forward to hitting Dish again real soon.

I went to this place twice within a week. So far I've had the sashimi, baked salmon roll, and poki stack. I was pretty disappointed on my second trip. The sashimi was pretty good, but I liked the cut the first time better. The baked salmon roll was good, but not great. I'd pass on the poki stack though. Overall, this place is decent, but next time, I'm probably going to check out Samurai Sushi. As others have stated, the decor is nice at Dish, and the prices are moderate to high.

Were new in town, so our friends suggested going this sushi restaurant. Sushi was ok - nothing to spectacular. Prices were pretty high for what it is...two reasons why I would go back is the calamari & friendly service (since our friends knew people that work there we received complimentary desserts).

The sushi I had was questionable. They don't use quality fish - for instance my tuna was a brownish color and fatty. I stuck to the tempura udon, which was absolutely delish. The tempura was a little soggy, but not so that it wasn't eatable, and I tend to dunk it in the soup. I think they use MSG, because I'm allergic and my knuckles swelled the next day (or it was the turkey sandwich I had for lunch earlier that day). The decor is light and trendy, I can see why so many kids hang out here. It's got a very "be seen" feel to it. Service is slow and it appears that maybe the owner hired his kids to work the place, who in-turn hired his friends to help him - there was a lot of attention being paid to each other, but not really the customers. The customers here seem to think that rolls are sushi and you could tell that sashimi was in nobody's vocabulary. If you really do enjoy sushi, this isn't the place for you, but if you want to have a drink over appetizers and hang out for a while, totally it.

I see not a lot has changed. "Why the hell did you go back if you didn't like it?" Well, friend, it was a going away party and there was no say in the matter. Plus, y'know, it wouldn't hurt to give it a second chance. -------- Go here if you have no plans for the rest of the evening with lots of time to spare, as it still takes more than an hour to get your order. Perhaps my previous review was a little harsh - but it was written the same evening I went and was a "frustrating experience" to say the least. Needless to say, it's still overrated. It's just that when you walk into this place the experience focuses more on presentation and a trendy atmosphere over the service, which is lacking immensely(useless in a way that's equivalent to those people who do nothing but stand around at A&F stores.) It feels like that "hip new MTV show that only aired it's pilot episode before getting canceled because there was no substance" of Japanese cuisine. Dish is more concerned about the facade/image of having a hip urban hangout with all the fame and street cred, rather than having an actual functioning efficient restaurant that satisfies customers who are there for food and not clubbin'. I would categorize large portion of the sushi menu as "fusion" rather than sushi(come to think of it, a lot of sushi places around town would be more "fusion." How can I put this - it's kinda like going to Chipotle or Qdoba or any of those other faux-mexican joints(but hey, at least Chipotle has Carnitas.) I digress. Dish, among many other competitors are more of a safety net for those who aren't quite comfortable with going the full step for sushi. These "fusion" dishes are interesting, but it's questionable whether one would call this sushi. It's places like this that make you wonder when a restaurant that is representative of traditional, home-made Japanese dishes that breaks out of the mold of what we perceive to define Japanese food emerges. But at least they fixed the arrangement of the dining area to something more "logical," minus the chinese gong at the entrance(why not a taiko drum? who knows.) In the mean time, I'll be heading over to Peter's or Samurai. P.S. The commercial is a train wreck. If the goal of the jingle was to discourage prospective clientele, it succeeded. Only time will tell if I receive another angry email from an unusually well-informed user defending the restaurant as if it were a personal attack. Almost...as if they were an affiliated relative of said business, trolling yelp and urbanspoon as quite a few places do, flagging less-than spectacular posts for removal and encouraging employees to post positive feedback. Ah well, it's merely an exaggerated analysis. *wink wink*

I've been going to this place for the past few years, and I think, for at least the past 3 owners and every time the place changes hands it seems to get a bit better. With the latest owners bringing in a nice modern feel to the location. Good food whether you get a dinner, sushi or sashimi. The wait staff is always very friendly and the fish seems to be as fresh as we're going to get up here in the AK. My one concern is that the prices seem to rise with every new owner. Overall a nice modern feel with that "come as you are" feel that Alaska has.

Give the Hawaiian and Spider rolls a try. Ummm ummm son. Place has a nice look and the sushi is some of the best you can get in Anchorage. Service is sometimes off but the food makes up for it.

Ok, so my husband and I while living there have gone to just about every sushi place in anchorage. I have to say this.. Dish use to be our favorite. Until the service went to crap. We would always brag about how good it was and thentale big parties there and we would get put in those rooms and never saw our server. This wasn't a one time deal. Then we find out they added 20% gratuity instead of 18% like the menu says. They wouldn't fix it. Said the computer had a glitch. I am sorry that is not professional at all. The owner has never been nice. She just glares all the time. Any time I would get sake with my husband the server would check our ID's (yes I am of age) and then not much later the owner/manager would come and snappy as hell just check mine again. She just isn't nice. The food is good though more expensive than samurai and they are actually so sweet there so it was never worth the drive to go over there. But if you are in town I think it's worth checking out the restaurant is put together very well!

I am a sushi snob. I admit it. I am a Sake snob, and I am not ashamed. Dish has both...and they are pretty damn good, not great, but good. The atmosphere is fantastic, although it does seem to be trying a bit too hard. I ordered both the Chanel Number 5 Roll ( which is officially my favorite roll in Alaska) and the sesame chicken ( yes, I eat a lot.) I enjoyed both. I could have done without miso soup appetizer, but, the ginger salad was a great pallete cleanser pre sushi. I had the plum Sake...and I am pretty sure I am a borderline addict now. It was freakin fantastic! The waitstaff are great...very young, but efficient and frienly none the less. There were enough hipsters for me to take notice, but not so many that I wanted to throw my chopsticks at anyone. Go take a visit, order the Chanel Number 5 Roll, have a few glasses of Plum Sake and realize that life is pretty damn good.

We had great service from our waitress but the manager needs a lesson or two in customer service. You don't blame a customer and call them a liar for pulling a huge hair from their sushi roll and then refuse to remove it from the bill. It's not the customer's fault that they happened to get through a little more than half the sushi roll BEFORE THEY CAME ACROSS THE HAIR!!! I've gotten better service from take-out people.

I agree with much of what Jenny L. wrote. I don't know if it's because I'm a sushi snob or because I lived in Japan and know what sushi is supposed to look/taste like. Whatever the case, Dish is definately NOT my cuppa o-cha. I am a sushi traditionalist. I like rice, fish, perhaps a little nori, and a big smear of wasabi. That's it. No more, no less. So it goes without saying that when a meal contains one, two, or three of those ingredients, said ingredients had better be flawless. The sushi, like Jenny L. said, was served warm. No, no, no. The rice also wasn't right...I couldn't figure out why. But perfect rice is essential (I can't get it right at home, that's why I go out for sushi) and Dish's rice wasn't quite right. Not a deal breaker, but there's room for improvement. Also, the nori on the tekka maki was seriously chewy, the result of being too hydrated. I wonder if the tekka maki had been sitting for awhile before being served, since it was warm and the nori had absorbed too much moisture. We also had a few orders of inventive rolls (huge list, very creative stuff). I don't like big, crunchy rolls with dribbles of pink sauce that you have to fight to fit in your mouth, so this culinary experience is lost on me. So, they were o.k. to eat, neat to look at it, etc. but kind of all tasted the same. Dish is the kind of place where it would behoove you to order something with deep fried veg or shellfish, instead of raw. The waitstaff was friendly and young and remarkably efficient. I never noticed them after my food arrived. But, my water was always refilled and empty dishes were removed. I'd say that's the mark of a great waitperson. Points for that. I don't think I'll be back, however. There are plenty of other sushi places in town that "Dish" it up right.

Tried this place recently while visiting Anchorage & loved it! Went here for lunch with the husband & he ordered a delicious bento box while I got a sashimi plate + a roll. All the sushi was really fresh & my simple tempura roll was delicious & a bit spicy. The tea & service was great & the price was pretty good for all the food we got. I'll definitely be back here again next time I'm in the "city"!! ;)

The atmosphere is nice here and yhe servise is awesome, but the sushi is not that great. Its almost like its premade and left for the day to be brought out later. The chicken fried rice was disgusting and smelled gross. It was way salty and yellow! I dnt think fried rice is suposed to be that way.

To be honest, I was expecting more from Dish. I've travelled around the world, overseas and domestic, always trying new Sushi restaurants and Dish was far from the top. After reading the reviews of people who "knew what good Sushi is," my wife and I should have went elsewhere. Although, the experience was never short from par. First of all, their take of Japanese salad didn't go well with us, due to the fact that the dressing wasn't the standard ginger dressing, but some sort of dressing with a heavy hint of orange. Their Miso soup, below average. I ordered Sushi and Sashimi. The sushi was good and the sashimi was fresh, so couldn't complain. My wife ordered 2 different types of rolls and with the prices that they were, we were expecting it to be some of the best we've ever eaten. However, it was far from that. Finally, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was contemporary. Although, it could go without the grand piano in the middle of the restaurant. P.S. One good thing my wife would like to mention is that the tempura covered oreo's they serve with the check were amazing.

3rd time here. Celebrating a birthday. Was in a private room w 12 guests. Service was OK. I eaten many sushi places all over anchorage and the lower 48 and I give thus place a 2 star because the rolls were the smallest I have ever seen! I ordered the Dream roll and GF ordered the volcanoe roll, both look so small that I thought I was eating some Fred Meyer sushi. The roll was falling apart as u try to pick it up. $15 for my sushi. The atmosphere was good tho. Only reason I would go there. I wouldnt go back. On a side note their tempura Oreo cookie dessert was delicious. Look else where if u want good sushi. Nothing special about this place.

I always loved going to The Dish. The prices are a little high but I always enjoyed their food. I love going with a group of friends and ordering a bottle of Lychee sake. The environment is designed nicely. The restaurant is usually packed on weekends or special holidays.

First time i went the service was good. Sushi was ehhh, hated the salad, and the miso was kinda bland. Second time.. i heard the place was good for parties so bunch of friends came out to eat.... food was again.. ehhh... the thing that really got to me was the service. The waitress was horrible. We'd ask for something and she'd look right at us and walk away without acknowledging us or ever bringing us what we asked for. there are a few times where we would say "excuse me?" and she would look at us then walk off very fast. maybe it was because she knew she was gonna get a tip either way (added on for parties), but still no excuse. We all would have tipped her more but her service was horrible. Then the menu said they add on, i think it was, 15% for tip? but our check had more than that added on. THey told us it was their computer system and they can't take it off. we had to pay the waitress even more. on the plus side the atmosphere is nice and their sake is yummy.

I eat at Dish on a weekly basis, and it is THE BEST place I have ever been to. They have the most extensive selection of rolls in town and they are all creative and delicious. The environment is very relaxed and chill, I love to go after work and choose from their many variations of hot or cold sake. Last time I was there, my server told me they will be opening their bar within the next week or so, and they will be serving custom sake cocktails! I can't wait!! Sometimes they are so busy you have to wait for a table, but it is well worth the wait. The pricing is moderate, but you get a lot of food for your dollar, and all meals come with a good sized soup and salad (with their home-made house dressing), and oreo tempura for desert with dinner. And the atmosphere is so nice and contemporary that I don't mind spending a couple extra dollars. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody who loves sushi... or even someone looking to try it for the first time!

Every time my husband and I go here the food is better and better. We try different types of sushi each time. We simply tell our server to surprise us and we have never been disappointed with what they bring. I leave there so full I can hardly breath! The aptmosphere is great, we're relaxed and happy each time were in there. I've been a sushi eater for 15 years and have been to a lot of sushi places in Anchorage & outside and this is by far the best place I have ever been.
